Transcript
- 0:03[SPEAKER_02]: All right, welcome to the show, others receiving votes.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_02]: The December 11th edition, I'm Pat Forty, joined his always by Jean-Wildjahowski and Brian Fisher.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_02]: Fellas, I kind of thought we had hit a light week.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_02]: I thought we might actually, you know,
- 0:22[SPEAKER_02]: looking around for a topic or two kind of need to invent something now now this is called football the news never stops and so we ended up with a loaded show we will have our first ever guest on this show a moment of historic occasion and we will certainly go quite deep on the sharon more situation at Michigan.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_02]: uh... there's a lot's unpacked there and it is increasingly ugly frankly this is no longer just a coach who is fired this is gone from a personal action to a potential criminal case um... to the last of the knowledge uh... Thursday morning looking i have a he was in booked into custody and washed an all-county jail uh... Wednesday night that doesn't still appears still appears to be the case as of eight thirty this morning
- 1:15[SPEAKER_02]: uh... so we will get certainly get into that and later on we'll discuss the highsman trophy which would be awarded on saturday and we will do commenters commenting on comments and we will pick the army navy game but before we do all that uh... we're gonna talk about the Notre Dame situation which really kind of overtook the beginning of the week uh... the Notre Dame snub the Notre Dame reaction of the snub
- 1:41[SPEAKER_02]: And that's where our guest comes in.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to have Ivan Mezzella College Football Playoff Selection Committee member.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_02]: And the author of a book about Frank Leahy, the Notre Dame legend, former colleague of Gene and I's at ESPN, full disclosure, a long time friend.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_02]: But he's going to tell us what he can about the Playoff Selection Committee process.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_02]: and how we got to the point of a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday of outrage in Mayhem.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_02]: and a temporarily canceled book signing at the University of Notre Dame.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_02]: Right in check events.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_02]: So we're going to get to Ivan here in just a few minutes.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_02]: But guys, I'm just interested, Gene, let's start with you, your thoughts on how the Notre Dame situation has boiled down.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_02]: You said on our show on Sunday that you were shocked they weren't in the bracket, what have you felt watching the aftermath of that?
- 2:45[SPEAKER_03]: I just want to preface this by saying once again that I think Notre Dame was entirely a worthy playoff team, certainly a team that could have made a real run at a national championship, but the committee thought otherwise.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_03]: And I understood why athletic director Peepabokwa went on the Dan Patrick show in the immediate aftermath of that on Monday and expressed his anger, his outrage, his exasperation,
- 3:15[SPEAKER_03]: fine.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_03]: But then it just went on and on and on and there came a point where you thought he was going to appear on Good Morning, Michelle Waka or a drive time in Fort Wayne.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_03]: At some point you made your point we understand we understand the frustration but now it's time to move on and then it got to we got a food fight with Brett Yormark, the a big 12 commissioner and that's a grieges behavior
- 3:43[SPEAKER_03]: of what the Boklus said about Jim Phillips of the ACC.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_03]: Anyway, they sort of lost the moral high ground to me at some point.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_03]: And then in one press conference we heard that there's a memorandum of understanding, the moving forward, Notre Dame if it's in the top 12 of the playoff standings, if it stays at 12, would automatically be guaranteed a spot.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_03]: uh... in in the playoff which i thought was a little hypocritical given that if we use that same formula this year Miami would have got knocked off but another day would have been perfectly fine with that no outrage there and finally fellas i did not hear any of this outrage about process uh... or these cfp selection shows on two days last year
- 4:35[SPEAKER_03]: when Notre Dame was selected to the CFP Playoff.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, at some point just became a little silly to me.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's always their situational outrage involved in whoever is outside of the bracket, you know.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_02]: That's when the system becomes a problem.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_02]: When the system doesn't help your team, right?
- 4:59[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, there was a lot going into this a whole bunch.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_02]: And we're going to get Brian's feelings on it and we'll all have add some more here, but
- 5:08[SPEAKER_02]: And so let's we've got our first ever guest in others receiving votes history and there he is.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_02]: We've got a quad box here, Ivan Mayzele, as I mentioned in the introduction, a long time friend and co-founder colleague of Jean and mine at ESPN has covered the sport meritoriously for decades.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_02]: And as a coming off his first year on the college football playoff selection committee.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_02]: And I have to say, I mean, you look relatively.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_02]: Stainin together here.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_02]: I haven't coming off of that year.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_02]: What was like?
- 5:43[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, gee, it went great.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, as you can tell from the last week.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_01]: No, it actually, you know, it's an impossible job.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, you're certainly not going to make everybody happy.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, people kept asking me, was it fun?
- 5:57[SPEAKER_01]: And I go, no, you know, it wasn't fun.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: It was, it was, it was intellectually
- 6:04[SPEAKER_01]: But at the end of the day, you know, as it often does with these things, it essentially we were trying to fit three feet into two shoes and that's never going to go well.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_01]: It's where everybody's happy and it certainly didn't this week.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I want to I'll ask what something else real quick, and then I'll let Brian and Jean wait in here as well.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_02]: you that let's just just clarify, you had a partial refusal for Notre Dame and for Stanford, right?
- 6:35[SPEAKER_02]: You're a Stanford alum, you have just written excellent book on former Notre Dame coach Frank Lehi, what is a partial refusal mean in terms of your role with the committee?
- 6:47[SPEAKER_01]: a full recusal means you have to leave the room, a partial recusal which was instituted this year, means you can stay in the room and you can talk about the other teams.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_01]: surrounding the team you're accused from, but you cannot talk about or vote concerning the team that you're partially accused from.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, my computer would, when it would present everybody else with Notre Dame, team B, team C, team D, mind we just all I could do is press
- 7:27[SPEAKER_01]: like you know just and so you know as you can imagine for much of the week Saturday night the wee hours of Sunday and then again after we woke up Sunday I could have just been sitting there eating a bag of popcorn and watching.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_01]: you know, it was it was it was fascinating and and I was glad I was there and and it was what was frustrating to me was I would start to make a point and I would get to and I would forget you know because I'm so focused on these teams and and I'd start to.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_01]: talking, then I would just, you know, if I got anywhere near Notre Dame, there would be like a, you know, a red light would come up.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_01]: They go, okay, all right, stop, you know, damn it, but, you know, that was, that was the deal.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_00]: I've been with a couple of us that have obviously gone through the mock selection committee exercise, which is, you know, it's interesting and a good insight into the process, but that's always looking back at a past year, I'm kind of curious what was it just like from from your standpoint going in week in week out doing this process and and what you kind of learned about things that you maybe didn't expect.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I went through the Mox election too, Brian, and I was kind of bored by it, because you know how it comes out, and I just sort of, it was mildly interesting, but I kind of went in one ear to out the other.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, this was a lot different, and it was
- 9:08[SPEAKER_01]: It was just a lot of discussion over the amount of data is mind-boggling that CFP has a deal with sport source analytics and there are stats there that I didn't even know existed.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_01]: There are stats there that I should have come up with myself that are painfully obvious.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: and and everybody and I think the beauty of the system to me is that there is no you know people say well you know what what's the primary is it had to had is it common opponent there's not one that you know is the crown achieving stat everybody can pick their own deal you know
- 9:55[SPEAKER_01]: one coach like this, one coach like that, you know, I was really interested in relative scoring and relative offense and relative defense, and that's the one I was pissed I didn't think of myself.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: you know, and it's simply, if you average, if you give up 20 points of game and I score 30 on you, then my relative scoring against you is 150 percent, you know, and what fascinated me about those numbers is they are a great predictor of success.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_01]: Relative offense relative defense relative scoring and so I kind of glomed on to those and and then there's schedule strength and record strength and on and on and on and on and on and I'll stop but it It there was just so much data.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_01]: We were awash in
- 10:51[SPEAKER_03]: I just felt like I was in a stats class back at in college and I, yes, yes, you know, I'm sure I did really well on stats.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_01]: I, I think I lasted a week in my stats class.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_01]: Ivan, you, you wrote to me as an airline.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_03]: You wrote a tremendous book called American Coach, the triumphant tragedy of Notre Dame legend Frank Lehi,
- 11:17[SPEAKER_03]: I have it here.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_03]: I'll show it to our audience.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_03]: There you go.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_03]: Good fish.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, good prop, Gina.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_03]: You're going to make sense, you're going to make an appearance which we will discuss, the drama involved in that.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_03]: But athletic director, Pete Ivakua, in his criticism of the committee, said he simply didn't understand the process.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_03]: And when you make this appearance, they're going to be Notre Dame fans there.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_03]: They're going to ask you the same sort of a question.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_03]: that their confusion about the process in the final week or two of the choices, what can you tell them about that process and how it turned out that Notre Dame was left out?
- 12:06[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I spoke to Notre Dame alumni club last night in Sarasota, and they were
- 12:12[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, and extensively it was going to be about the book, and I just stood up and said, all right, we'll get to the book, what do you want to know, and, and I, and they said, now we're good with the playoff.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk about the book.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_01]: No, they didn't actually say that.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I tried to explain how we do it, and when it got to the final weeks, I said, look, you know, there was a couple of things.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_01]: And one is the thing that Hunter, your check said a couple of times coming down the stretch, which was, you know, it was, we never got to Miami and Notre Dame.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_01]: alone.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_01]: And it was always a team, other one or more teams in the discussion with them.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_01]: And I think he said Sunday, you know, BYU is there.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_01]: And we had, you know, we never got to know today in Miami because we had no today in the head of BYU.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_01]: And so it was never, it was never
- 13:21[SPEAKER_01]: And the other thing I had tried to point out, and this really didn't occur to me till the end, you know, now it all looks crystal clear, but when you're in the middle of it, and you don't know, you know, we didn't know Miami was going, when we, our first poll, Miami, and again, Hunter said this the other day, Miami had lost two of three and didn't look very good.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_01]: The Notre Dame already had its momentum going.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_01]: And so that's why they were eight spaces apart and that fully formed picture of Miami or anybody else was not complete until the end of the season.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_01]: And that's, you know, nobody at Notre Dame wants to hear that.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_01]: And it's not a satisfying answer.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_01]: completely, but you know, and it looks obvious in retrospect, but it certainly didn't in the moment.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_02]: Points been made by several people myself included that I, I'm not sure the TV show on Tuesday night serves the committee well or even the weekly rankings.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm curious.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, what do you think of as a committee member to 80 watch the show be watch your reaction watching the show and see would you rather just do this one time at the end?
- 14:48[SPEAKER_01]: Well, uh, with the caveat way above my pay grade, but uh, I watched the show when I wasn't traveling home in, you know, and, and I think, uh, or a couple of times, I had book events Tuesday night, you know, so I didn't get to see it.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, but I saw probably four of them.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_01]: Um,
- 15:14[SPEAKER_01]: My memory when they've show began what Bill Hancock said was, it allows us us being the committee to set the agenda.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, think about what would happen if AP and the coaches poll had, you know,
- 15:33[SPEAKER_01]: their poll all the way and we got to the end of the season and we had a completely different poll.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_01]: And oh my god, what is this committee doing?
- 15:43[SPEAKER_01]: How could we have been number three all year long and were number seven now or whatever?
- 15:50[SPEAKER_01]: So that part of it I appreciate and I think that
- 16:01[SPEAKER_01]: week to week are not going to look very smart at the end.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_01]: And they may not be consistent.
- 16:09[SPEAKER_01]: Football is not consistent.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_01]: You know, things change.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_01]: And that's not a satisfying at all answer.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_01]: You know, to your question of whether we should have it, you know,
- 16:25[SPEAKER_01]: does it have to be every week?
- 16:27[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, you know, but it's clearly it's a ratings getter for the worldwide leader.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, us, you know, what we think is is completely moot.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know, ESPN paid for it.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's a good show for them and that's pretty much the end of the discussion.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_00]: I'm curious too, we hear a lot about the personalities in the room and certainly going back a couple of years, you always heard that Barry Alvarez, he spoke up a lot and I'm going to hear what the tinder of the room is from your perspective, and especially this year given that there was a committee chair change right in the right smack dab in the middle things.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Hunter was really put in a tough spot within the room he was terrific and I actually said this at the end of the meeting Sunday.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_01]: I really appreciated, I told everybody, I really appreciated the level of respect and
- 17:31[SPEAKER_01]: You know, throughout the whole season, it's a good group that was nobody like Barry and we all know, you know, Barry is is is is out there and we all love him to death, but this was a very respectful if you think about the head coaches because those are the personalities that
- 17:56[SPEAKER_01]: that our listeners and we know best, you know, Mark Dantonio, not a loud flashy guy at Grylly, world's nicest guy, you know, Chris Alt, just a good old football coach, you know, and a charming, he's a charming guy, you know, I didn't know Chris really at all before this, but really liking, and, and,
- 18:21[SPEAKER_01]: everybody.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_01]: Nobody wants to hear this.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_01]: I know, but the only agenda everybody had was to try to get it right.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_01]: And that's, uh, and, and there was a, uh, it never got, but it never got testy.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_01]: You know, because there's a lot of guys that were already friends who are in the room.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_01]: You know, 80s come up kind of the way coaches do.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_01]: They work together somewhere.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_01]: They're in the
- 18:50[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think when Mark Harland was at South Florida, Troy Danham was a two-lane.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_01]: They were both in the American together.
- 18:58[SPEAKER_01]: You know, now they're on the committee together at Utah in Nebraska respectively.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_01]: So there were a lot of relationships I wasn't aware of.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_01]: I really only people I knew in there were were the coaches and Jeff Long that I had any kind of relationship with.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_01]: So I really enjoyed that part of it.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_02]: I haven't got that as a long answer.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_02]: It was a good answer.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_02]: It was good.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_03]: Without compromising any of the protocol relative to being a committee member, as Saturday and then Saturday night unfolded and you guys kept meeting and talking, can you describe
- 19:52[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I will tell you, Gino, that we don't, they don't tell us what the vote tally is.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody loads their, we all have laptops in front of us and they say, okay, it's time to vote and in a countdown clock, 10 second countdown clock appears on your screen and then the ballot pops up.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_01]: It's very dramatic.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_01]: uh and uh and uh and you vote and you sit there and then uh they say you know whatever whatever it would have been.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_01]: Alabama is nine or was it Alabama is nine?
- 20:33[SPEAKER_01]: Miami is ten.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_01]: Notre Dame is eleven.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_01]: and sometimes they'll say it was close or it wasn't close or but you know we don't know how each other voted we know who you know I mean obviously we've all been debating back and forth so you know who thinks what in rough terms but not everybody speaks every time so
- 21:01[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it was obviously the greatest issue was those three teams and we didn't begin meeting until after the Virginia Duke game in terms of, you know, we met early in the day just to kind of go over the noon game for about 20 minutes and then the four clock
- 21:31[SPEAKER_01]: But we didn't actually have a meeting until after Virginia Duke, which was about Midnight.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_01]: And we went from Midnight to about two.
- 21:40[SPEAKER_01]: And then we went, you know, we broke up and then we got back together at 730 and went till 930 or 10 something like that.
- 21:52[SPEAKER_01]: At some point we had to break because the show was coming up.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_01]: It may have been after 10, even.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_02]: last thing for me here, Ivan.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_02]: So, yes, you guys go until 10 and you've put together the bracket.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_02]: But he said, hey, this is pretty good bracket or what?
- 22:11[SPEAKER_02]: How did people feel?
- 22:12[SPEAKER_02]: And then secondly, I'm sure you knew this was going to be a very, you know, much discussed result.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_01]: uh... a little bit uh... a little bit um... by surprise only intellectually it didn't take me by surprise but with you know with it but then when you're faced with it and you've really feel the emotion of people that you know that's that was uh... yeah you know that i had i haven't
- 22:54[SPEAKER_01]: been the subject of the brunt of something like that before.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, I've had stories that people didn't like and told me they didn't like.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_01]: We all have to go through that.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_01]: And this is similar to that.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_01]: uh... when we finished how did we feel i mean there's always this sort of self-congratulatory moment you know hey hey this is a really good you know we really nailed this one you know yeah uh... but that's i think part and parcel of any any process you want to feel you know you like to feel good when you finished and it was uh...
- 23:37[SPEAKER_01]: It is as it is pretty intellectually it's thorough, you know, I don't know if rigorous is the right word, but, you know, it's thorough and people may not like the way we decided, but, you know, I'll still take a human committee over, you know, what that BCS nightmare we all live through, you know, 10 times out of nine, you know, amen.
- 24:03[SPEAKER_02]: uh... one other thing i lied sorry i've been uh... we do have to discuss your your book store fair yet that the homes books or at no-terdam very nice bookstore yeah uh... you a book signing frankly book is is genome noted and uh... that's going to be fried a at what time
- 24:23[SPEAKER_01]: 430.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_01]: 430.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_02]: So 430.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, or others want to come by and get a book and get it signed.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_02]: There you go.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_02]: But this looked like it wasn't going to happen for a minute directly related to your membership on the committee.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_02]: Can you kind of just walk us through what happened and then ultimately didn't happen there.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, uh, Wednesday was quite the day, uh, you know, they called and said we're really concerned and they're very nice people and I've appeared at the bookstore, I think it's pronounced Hamless.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but, yeah.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_01]: uh... and i've been there twice already and they were they were delightful and everybody couldn't have been more welcoming in the book was well received but they called me and said we just don't feel good about this and we're really concerned and i've said you know hey i've been yelled at before it'll be fine and you know we had that sort of tennis ball back and forth ping pong conversation and i finally realized they really wanted me to say it was okay if we didn't do it
- 25:29[SPEAKER_01]: And, and I said fine, and then I, the minute I hung up, I went, no, that's not really good because if, if, if that happens, uh, you know, then you're letting all that noise out there and, and anger and, and Twitter rage, you know, have its way.
- 25:50[SPEAKER_01]: And so, uh, once that it became public,
- 25:57[SPEAKER_01]: You know, nobody at the athletic department and nobody in the University of Administration had any knowledge that the bookstore felt this way and the bookstore was made this decision.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_01]: And once it blew up, they couldn't move quickly enough to reverse the decision.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_01]: And everybody met well, you know, but you know, the decision got reversed, you know,
- 26:26[SPEAKER_01]: beat the vodka called me to apologize and I said, you know,
- 26:30[SPEAKER_01]: I said, Pete, how's your day going?
- 26:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I said, there's no need to apologize.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody was acting in good faith, but, yeah, so I will be at the bookstore Friday at 430.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_01]: I'll be at Joseph Beth in Cincinnati, Saturday, and then I'm speaking at the South Ben, back in South Ben, Sunday at the museum.
- 26:54[SPEAKER_01]: So everybody that wants to take a shot will certainly have their chance.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_01]: And I will listen, it's a terrific shot.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, it's a great book.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_02]: Check a shot, take a shot, but also buy the book.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_02]: It's worth it, worth the read.
- 27:11[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_02]: All right, we'll let you get back on I-75.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for pulling over to talk to us.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_02]: Great insight on how the committee works.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_02]: And we'll be back right after this.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_02]: All right, our thanks to Ivan as well for coming on and telling us a little bit how that sausage is made.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_02]: Let's put a bow on it real quickly here, guys, and then we'll move on to Michigan.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_02]: You know, the one thought here, I'm glad the bookstore thing worked out, but it is symptomatic of the over the top outrage I thought from Notre Dame and Pete here.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sorry.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_02]: Gene, you touched on this at the beginning of the show that.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_02]: they ginned up and outraged that I thought was somewhat disproportionate to the situation.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_02]: I agree that I feel badly for them, but we're going to feel badly for somebody.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_02]: And that's the bottom line.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_02]: As Ivan said, three feet for two shoes.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_02]: And you know, I just, I would like to, like us to get past a little bit of the
- 28:13[SPEAKER_02]: you know whoever hidden in the committee has the right to go absolute scorched earth ballistic uh... for days afterwards i get me into support but i thought it was too much
- 28:24[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I was too much, and it was directed in particular from Notre Dame standpoint at the ACC, which might have larger implications to the broader college football universe, which we can always get into in future shows.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_00]: But that to me was the thing that's right.
- 28:38[SPEAKER_00]: I understood the anger.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_00]: I understood the AD coming out and trying to rally the fan base a little bit and even to a
- 28:47[SPEAKER_00]: bypassing the bulge.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_00]: I can't understand all of that.
- 28:50[SPEAKER_00]: But just for it to keep going like you mentioned earlier, Gino, and to have it directed at the league that essentially you are a partial member of that was that was the more eye-opening thing that we might have some additional fallout, if you will, over the coming weeks and months from.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_03]: I would remind everyone that the ACC, while it was totally mutually beneficial during the COVID years, the ACC reached out a hand to Notre Dame and provided Notre Dame a place to play games and to be basically a member of sorts that year and it just this thing went sideways fast.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_03]: and as Pete Babakwa said, you know, things can be fixed and things heal over time, but the Brian's point, this one didn't sound like there weren't going to be bruise marks for a while, so we'll see how that shakes out.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the language involved irreparable damage.
- 29:50[SPEAKER_02]: That's legal type of language.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_02]: And I know that the school and the conference have sparked a little bit on the number of conference games that are the number of ACC games they play.
- 30:04[SPEAKER_02]: They're supposed to play five every year.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_02]: They're adding this regular series with Clemson, Notre Dame, once that to be part of that five,
- 30:13[SPEAKER_02]: uh... the acc says no that's in addition to the five so these kind of things there there is some uh... some skirmishing i think going on a maneuvering at least here we're gonna see what the overall impact is on the relationship there between uh... the school and the league that they're in and twenty four other sports wild times there but uh... no less wild maybe more wild in an arbor michigan
- 30:39[SPEAKER_02]: unbelievable situation that blew up on Wednesday afternoon with the firing of Sharon Moore, the football coach after two seasons.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_02]: But it didn't end there.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_02]: The statement from Michigan was surprisingly specific for why it was firing him and improper relationship with a staffer.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_02]: They kind of aired a little bit of the laundry there.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_02]: And then things got worse.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_02]: This became more than just a firing of a coach for an off-the-field issue, as Sharon Moore was investigated for an assault, alleged assault, and taken into custody.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_02]: And again, as of like nine this morning, believed to still be in the Washington County jail.
- 31:32[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know where there's been charged yet, but this whole thing has been,
- 31:37[SPEAKER_02]: Fairly shocking, but also there were, I will say, there were rumblings, there were some rumors, some discussions like Ashro Morse, he's in trouble there, and it wasn't just wins and losses.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_02]: So we don't really know fully the timing of what went down other than...
- 31:54[SPEAKER_02]: The University of Michigan says it got credible information very recently about this situation.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_02]: But I'm asking you guys here, you know, this blew up in such a dramatic way.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_02]: You know, Brian, what is your reaction to when this thing all blew up?
- 32:15[SPEAKER_03]: I thought my jaw had dropped about as far as it could on selection Sunday when Notre Dame
- 32:22[SPEAKER_03]: but then this happened and as you said, the very top of the show.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_03]: Every time you think college football is going to exhale,
- 32:32[SPEAKER_03]: And maybe just relax for a moment.
- 32:35[SPEAKER_03]: Something crazy happens.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_03]: So it is a humiliating fall of grace for sure on more.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_03]: And of course, obviously we have to let the legal process play out and we'll eventually find out what actually
- 32:53[SPEAKER_03]: uh, is going on, but it's clear that that Michigan is is moving forward without him and and said so and and pretty stark terms terms that you normally don't see and that sort of kind of in that kind of statement, uh, to be that specific.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_03]: So Michigan, once again, faces a scandal.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_03]: And that is becoming sort of the way the world in Ann Arbor, in that football program, which is just, there's an ideal in a philosophy that Michigan likes to say it it here is too, but in this case, there's no denying that this Michigan man idea is,
- 33:41[SPEAKER_03]: is really vaporized at the moment.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I mean, Pat to your point, I mean, there were certain rumors, if you will, that something was going on in the Michigan program that there was some sort of investigation, but the fact that, you know, Schroenmore was doing his signing day press for conference, you know, just a couple of days ago.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I saw the AD word manual on Tuesday morning, you know, getting coffee, and you know, it didn't seem like anything,
- 34:07[SPEAKER_00]: was admit.
- 34:08[SPEAKER_00]: So this definitely came fast and hard there in Ann Arbor in terms of the speed that this happened in transition from, all right, we're doing something to, all right, he's fired.
- 34:18[SPEAKER_00]: You know, this, this happened extremely quickly and I think just the surprise at everybody has, you know, it's, you think the program is going one direction.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_00]: finish nine and three this year and then boom, they're now in the middle of a coaching search.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I think there's also some additional questions overward manual.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_00]: There's no school president right now, like that clouds of coaching search.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we we've seen the Michigan regents be pretty hands-on in terms of everything that's been going on with a whole big tindil and what's going on with the private equity piece and everything that so they've been pretty hands-on with athletics as is.
- 34:51[SPEAKER_00]: And now you you drop this in there.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_00]: So I think there's a lot of
- 34:55[SPEAKER_00]: they're at Michigan in general, beyond just the fact that, hey, they don't have the football coach right now, which is, is crazy to think about, given the way, uh, we kind of expected this week to go.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_00]: We did not have this on our plate and, uh, I think it makes for a fascinating research because you can't wonder.
- 35:10[SPEAKER_00]: All right, is that ink drive for Matt Campbell, you know, in Penn State, you know, he would have been one of the top candidates, probably would have been his top job if he had had his his brothers would be go to Michigan instead of Penn State, but obviously he's in state college right now he's been in that that that that cap and he's moving forward there.
- 35:28[SPEAKER_00]: It's just a fascinating time on the coaching care as so, you know, in terms of you got a lot of candidates out there and have either changed jobs recently, you know, it's kind of after the cycle, if you will, you know, a lot of kids have even signed.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_00]: So it just, it was a lot.
- 35:43[SPEAKER_00]: It was a lot this week and I mean, I imagine it's still going to be a lot there in an Auburn given the fall that we're going to have not only locally, but nationally, given the impact of this job.
- 35:54[SPEAKER_02]: of the problem as Gene alluded to is it's been a lot for a while in Ann Arbor.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_02]: It has been a succession of issues some more serious than others.
- 36:05[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I don't want to compare
- 36:15[SPEAKER_02]: and other situations, potential criminal situation with sure on more here.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_02]: But just the pile-up of stuff has been incredible.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_02]: At a time when they were also, they had as much success as Michigan has had in a long time for a three-year period where they went to the playoff three straight times.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_02]: And then they won the playoff and went 15 and oh,
- 36:38[SPEAKER_02]: the one year in 2023.
- 36:41[SPEAKER_02]: So, but while that was going on, there were two major NCAA investigations.
- 36:46[SPEAKER_02]: There was the not a cheeseburger investigation of the impermecible recruiting and a
- 36:55[SPEAKER_02]: that led to sanctions and then there was the stallions piece which went on and on and on and resulted in a massive fine of the program like $30 million multiple suspensions Jim Harbao was suspended, Sharon Moore was suspended and then again the more serious the criminal stuff
- 37:23[SPEAKER_02]: on authorized access to computers and aggravated identity theft with the allegation that he was taking pictures private pictures of college students athletes from around the country and depositing them basically in his own hard drives and for whatever purpose I don't really want to know but and then you have this sure on more situation there and yeah I'm sorry I don't want to hear the
- 37:51[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_02]: I do not want to hear that we are the leaders in the best.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_02]: They are right now.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_02]: They look like an SEC school and frankly, SEC schools would be embarrassed to have some of this stuff going on.
- 38:02[SPEAKER_02]: So this is a time where Michigan has succeeded greatly and it has put itself in a lot of really embarrassing taught recituations as well.
- 38:13[SPEAKER_02]: So a bit of a reality check for who Michigan is, who it thinks it is versus who it really is at this
- 38:21[SPEAKER_02]: reach.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_02]: Well, we will see where this goes.
- 38:26[SPEAKER_02]: So to that point, Brian, you laid out a little bit of some of the problems here.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of coaches that would probably like this job have other jobs recently.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_02]: Took other job recently, agreed to new contracts.
- 38:40[SPEAKER_02]: You wrote about who could be candidates on Wednesday.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_02]: How do you see this search playing out?
- 38:45[SPEAKER_00]: Well, who's who's running it would be my kind of first big question, you know, is it going to be word manuals higher is it going to be somebody else's there at Michigan, you know, who who's the ultimate boss not only in terms of running the search, you know, are they're going to get a search for my think there's there's actual process considerations that we got to kind of figure out here with Michigan, especially how fresh this news isn't.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_00]: really how much they're all going to be dealing with, you know, just, it doesn't seem like it's going to be an intern, Biff Pogi, you know, used the cut-offs and, you know, go with it for an intern period and then we'll make a higher down the road after we kind of sort all that out.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_00]: It does seem like they at least would like to, you know, move at somewhat quickly to get another guy, especially because the transfer portal, that deadline's not moving and that is certainly coming up fast and furious with some big considerations, including their, their star quarterback, as we all know,
- 39:33[SPEAKER_00]: I think that'll be a big, big factor in terms of the speed of the search, but in terms of the names, you know, I think you can start with Killing Abore, you know, he's obviously a Midwestern guy.
- 39:42[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think the fit there at Alabama, I think if you're Killing Abore too, and this comes open and look, there's
- 39:50[SPEAKER_00]: certainly been some some reports that he was flirting or or Penn State was flirting with him and I think you could maybe take that with a grain of salt in terms of, you know, his interest in the new lines.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_00]: He certainly been says he's happy.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_00]: He says his family's happy there at Alabama, but you know, there are there are two things that I think if if you're Kayland aboard, you would you should seriously consider saying given it a call to Michigan.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_00]: In the fact that number one, Paul Feinbaum is not running for Senate and so he will be there to pastor you.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_00]: every single time that you lose, that would be number one.
- 40:20[SPEAKER_00]: Number two, you could see the fan reaction there at Alabama in terms of after they lost that SEC championship game.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_00]: They're like, all right, we don't want to go to the playoffs.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they were kind of over the the era and it kind of seems like what we've seen out of Brian Kelly and LSU earlier that maybe that fan base just has not gotten gotten there.
- 40:39[SPEAKER_00]: they're grip around this calendar boarder and you know I think that maybe looking for an exit clause as good a job as Alabama is.
- 40:47[SPEAKER_00]: Michigan's also a pretty dang good job that you can want a national title app and it comes with less of the baggage that you have to deal with at a place like Alabama.
- 40:55[SPEAKER_00]: So that would that be kind of where you might want to start but there's there's going to be a lot of names and I am going to be very curious to see
- 41:00[SPEAKER_00]: Are they going to go to somebody with Michigan ties?
- 41:02[SPEAKER_00]: You know, somebody like Jesse Mentor is out there.
- 41:05[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, the charges coordinator, he does have a show cause attached to him.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_00]: So there's some complicating factors with that.
- 41:11[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, are you going to go with somebody connected to Jim Harbox?
- 41:16[SPEAKER_00]: Somebody who connected to the program, maybe that played for Michigan.
- 41:19[SPEAKER_00]: There's certainly a number of coaches out there that do have amazing blue skies.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_00]: But, are they going to completely cut ties with those?
- 41:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and go outside the family, if you will.
- 41:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's going to be an interesting thing.
- 41:31[SPEAKER_00]: You got Jed Fish out there.
- 41:32[SPEAKER_00]: He's a former assistant there.
- 41:33[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's going to be a name that gets connected a lot with this job.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_00]: So it could go a number of different directions, but the bottom line is this is a blue blood.
- 41:41[SPEAKER_00]: It is at one of those top jobs.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_00]: It is a place that it is shown that you can win an national title.
- 41:46[SPEAKER_00]: They have the resources now.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think there's going to be a lot of coaches interested in this one.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_03]: two quick things.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_03]: One, they're very lucky to have Bif Pogy available in this situation.
- 41:58[SPEAKER_03]: Remember, he was interim coach earlier in this season when Tronor was suspended, and he did a fine job.
- 42:05[SPEAKER_03]: And he is, his played at Michigan.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_03]: He was on Harboss staff.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_03]: He knows how that program works.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_03]: And he'll be a steady force.
- 42:15[SPEAKER_03]: So I think they're very fortunate to have Bif Pogy.
- 42:18[SPEAKER_03]: it be it in an interim role or moving forward.
- 42:21[SPEAKER_03]: So long shot moving forward, but for right now, very fortunate to have him.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_03]: Secondly, and I say it, I said it earlier in the season.
- 42:31[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sure I'll get mocked, but I think your first call has to go to Nick Saven.
- 42:37[SPEAKER_03]: I think you just have to ask him, do you have any interest in this?
- 42:41[SPEAKER_03]: And maybe it's a two-year
- 42:47[SPEAKER_03]: with credibility, with a guy who used to coach in the big ten by the way, somebody who can steady this and won't do any of this.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_03]: there's craziness that's going on with this program.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_03]: So, I think you least have to call them and ask them.
- 43:07[SPEAKER_03]: They'll say no, but I think you least have to call them and ask them.
- 43:10[SPEAKER_03]: And as for Brian's other candidates, sure, they all have their pros and cons.
- 43:16[SPEAKER_03]: So, yeah, my first thought was, I wonder what Matt Campbell's thinking at this exact moment.
- 43:23[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think that's a legitimate thought.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_02]: And I will say, I wonder, in retrospect,
- 43:31[SPEAKER_02]: percolating maybe on agent circles and that sort of thing.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_02]: It was a little bit of a hitch in the giddy up obviously with a Penn State search, right?
- 43:39[SPEAKER_02]: It kind of lingered there and all of a sudden there was like some different unusual candidates and I almost wonder if there were some people out there waiting to see as the Michigan shoe going to drop.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's a good point.
- 43:51[SPEAKER_02]: and if that complicated things and then it finally does drop after signing day after the cycles basically complete and now it's a whole different ballgame.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_02]: I will be fascinated to see it like, say even sure if you can get him, I just don't think he's going to do it.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the other Alabama coach, the board, I think that's a really interesting one there.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_02]: If they lose to Oklahoma,
- 44:18[SPEAKER_02]: on September on December 19th is he in play what he want to be in play how does that go down and then if not where does it go from there I suspect talking to a few people that
- 44:31[SPEAKER_02]: this would probably be an opportunity for Michigan to move away from the harbour tree, you know, like a Jesse mentor or anybody else.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think that would be in play.
- 44:42[SPEAKER_02]: There may be some people pushing for it, including Jim Harbond himself, but I think the administration, what there is, and even Ward Manual, who is I think pretty exhausted dealing with harbour, might want to to go his own way there.
- 44:55[SPEAKER_02]: If he does get the chance to make this higher, because look,
- 44:58[SPEAKER_02]: uh... show more didn't go well juan Howard went well for a little while in basketball then it went poorly dusty may the new hire very good but sure on more said had had a couple mistakes for sure i real quickly guys uh... want to get your highsman thoughts uh... i know brine in our voters that jino are you still a voter you are you know i give it up last year okay okay so you can say who would you vote for jane if you had a vote i would i would have to vote for uh...
- 45:28[SPEAKER_03]: Very very difficult vote.
- 45:31[SPEAKER_03]: I think this year you might think otherwise I know you guys aren't going to say who you voted for I totally get it, but I
- 45:41[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, I thought Jeremiah love has a really compelling case.
- 45:45[SPEAKER_03]: I think saying out of the four would probably be fourth on my ballot.
- 45:49[SPEAKER_03]: I know man does it is going to be likely the number one draft pick, but I don't choose my Heisman winners based on what they're going to do or where they're going to be chosen in the NFL drafts.
- 46:01[SPEAKER_03]: So as the most outstanding college football player, I think this year it was Pavia.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_00]: I wish we had we had more you know some of the finalists in New York so we could tell their stories and all that and I think if you know the Heismatrophy has been at least listening but the trust itself has been listening to and incorporating some some tweaks and changes this year you know in terms of the voting period it didn't open until essentially kind of the end of the first quarter the SEC championship game and you had to get it in by Monday as usual but
- 46:33[SPEAKER_00]: The voting period itself was truncated compared to past years, which I think is probably going to have an impact on ultimately who wins this, but I mean, there were so many great players in options and stories and like, you know, I would imagine when we actually look at the final voting tallies, you know, there's going to be a ton of guys that end up getting
- 46:55[SPEAKER_00]: Second place third place votes.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think the first place votes are going to be split.
- 46:59[SPEAKER_00]: So I think it's going to be a fascinating race.
- 47:01[SPEAKER_00]: If you want to kind of look at it from from that that perspective, but I mean, there was so many great candidates and, you know, you mentioned the quarterbacks there.
- 47:09[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to be interesting between.
- 47:10[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure, you know, Julian Saine's performance in the big time game didn't help them at all, in terms of getting the ultimate win.
- 47:17[SPEAKER_00]: You wonder about vote splitting with Jeremiah Smith, and if he's going to gather, you know, look more momentum there in the Midwest, you got, you know, certainly Mendoza and, and Bobby, probably going to be your one, two, and some sort of order, just based on, I'm looking at some of the odds and, and how others are talking, but,
- 47:33[SPEAKER_00]: really just a fascinating year and a difficult decision.
- 47:37[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, this was one of the more difficult decisions I had, not just in terms of, you know, who's one and who's two, but like, all right, who's going to be that third guy that you are going to throw out there, because there were a lot of deserving candidates that you're sharing, nobody really kind of like seized that momentum, seized the race, and seized the trophy, and that's not a bad thing.
- 47:55[SPEAKER_00]: It's just kind of reflective on it was a very broad year in terms of candidates.
- 48:02[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I would have loved a five person ballot this year.
- 48:05[SPEAKER_02]: It's always three and it's, you know, it's like, eight, our choice is just like the committee had to make somebody had to be left out.
- 48:11[SPEAKER_02]: Couple people had to be left off the ballot.
- 48:12[SPEAKER_02]: But I could have voted for the four finalists for Nandes, Diego Pavia, Julian Sane and Jeremiah love.
- 48:21[SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
- 48:22[SPEAKER_02]: I would have liked a fifth spot for Jacob Rodriguez, the winner.
- 48:24[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'll walk you from the back.
- 48:26[SPEAKER_02]: Good call.
- 48:27[SPEAKER_02]: And take a ways on his own seven forced fumbles for interceptions, leading tackler on a great defense and talk about a story.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_02]: The guy was a walk on quarterback at Virginia, and they used him as kind of a tasom hill, athlete guy that just did stuff.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, transfers home is from Wichita Falls, Texas becomes a linebacker and he's phenomenal on this, you know, up from the bootstraps team.
- 48:53[SPEAKER_02]: So I would like to have seen Jacob Rodriguez get to New York, but
- 48:58[SPEAKER_02]: again.
- 48:58[SPEAKER_02]: There's only so many votes to go around so many places.
- 49:02[SPEAKER_02]: Alright guys, time for our commenters commenting on comments, the Facebook segment here comments come from Facebook groups.
- 49:12[SPEAKER_02]: It's presented by Facebook.
- 49:14[SPEAKER_02]: And we have got four comments and I'm going to ask you guys to respond to some of them I will respond to some of them.
- 49:22[SPEAKER_02]: This is once for Brian from Ariel.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_02]: I love Matt Campbell to Penn State.
- 49:27[SPEAKER_02]: He might be exactly what we needed.
- 49:30[SPEAKER_02]: What do you think?
- 49:31[SPEAKER_00]: I'm right there with the area, you know, I think this was when you could have number one when you're you're grading the higher and when you're looking at who Penn State could have hired you initially like Matt Campbell was top of the list, you know, in terms of potential candidates that we would have taken the job and done a great job there.
- 49:47[SPEAKER_00]: He's a maximizer of talent.
- 49:49[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to do that at Penn State.
- 49:51[SPEAKER_00]: He's a guy that maybe the floors a little bit lower compared to James Franklin, because he always seemed to win those games that you expected Penn State to win.
- 49:58[SPEAKER_00]: but the ceiling is a little bit higher in terms of getting those upsets that Penn State fans have desperately needed.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_00]: He was there knocking off Texas, knocking off Oklahoma with essentially one hand tied behind his back at Iowa State in terms of the roster he could build.
- 50:11[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to kill it at Penn State I think in terms of getting those wins that that Penn State fan base really wants to see.
- 50:18[SPEAKER_02]: All right, I'll answer Lawrence's question.
- 50:21[SPEAKER_02]: Who cares if the Irish turned down a ball if you could if you all could name who played in last year's popdarts ball without looking it up.
- 50:29[SPEAKER_02]: I will buy a steak dinner for each of you.
- 50:32[SPEAKER_02]: Give me some steak Lawrence.
- 50:34[SPEAKER_02]: That was I was stating Miami and the main reason I remember is because Cam Ward played like.
- 50:39[SPEAKER_02]: one quarter, right?
- 50:40[SPEAKER_02]: And then said, I'm out.
- 50:43[SPEAKER_02]: So that's the main reason that.
- 50:45[SPEAKER_02]: So I get your point, Lawrence, that first of all, Notre Dame playing in the Pop Tarts bowl, just on name alone.
- 50:53[SPEAKER_02]: I think that, you know, if this were the the Gator bowl or the citrus bowl, things might have been a little easier to finesse, but Pop Tarts bowl is a good bowl.
- 51:02[SPEAKER_02]: They do get Pop Tarts out of it.
- 51:04[SPEAKER_02]: But I understand Notre Dame's situation.
- 51:08[SPEAKER_02]: I wish they would have played.
- 51:09[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not going to make a federal case out of it.
- 51:11[SPEAKER_02]: But I do know Miami and Iowa State was like 43 to 43 or something.
- 51:17[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, Gino.
- 51:18[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 51:19[SPEAKER_02]: Wade wants to know.
- 51:21[SPEAKER_02]: Did Greg Sanky force the committee to pick Alabama over ND?
- 51:27[SPEAKER_02]: How could they watch both teams and believe
- 51:35[SPEAKER_03]: First of all, Facebook, thank you for sponsoring us of these weeks.
- 51:40[SPEAKER_03]: And secondly, really, that's the question you had to give me, Pat, great, great, same key conspiracy theory.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, no, of course not.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, look, if you listen to Ivan earlier in this podcast,
- 51:58[SPEAKER_03]: You can criticize the committee all you want and they know that going in, but I don't think you can criticize the integrity of the committee.
- 52:08[SPEAKER_03]: I truly believe they try to do the best job they can with the information that they have and they make a decision and they're not always popular decisions.
- 52:20[SPEAKER_03]: Greg Sanky wasn't within 10,000 miles of being inside that room.
- 52:26[SPEAKER_03]: Every constituency is given an opportunity to make a case for their teams.
- 52:31[SPEAKER_03]: And that did happen previous in Notre Dame by the way, Ron Paulus of that athletic department made a presentation to the committee.
- 52:39[SPEAKER_03]: Everybody gets a chance to do that.
- 52:41[SPEAKER_03]: So the committee acted on its own a Greg Sanky while we can argue he might be the most
- 52:50[SPEAKER_03]: In this case, was powerless when it came to deciding who would be in the field.
- 52:58[SPEAKER_03]: No corruption.
- 52:59[SPEAKER_03]: No.
- 52:59[SPEAKER_02]: I'm with you.
- 53:01[SPEAKER_02]: Sorry.
- 53:01[SPEAKER_02]: I know it sounds good.
- 53:03[SPEAKER_02]: but there was no corruption there.
- 53:06[SPEAKER_02]: And all right, I just very heavily closed the document here, but I did have the last question I can't remember who asked it, but it was, if Indiana and Kurt Signal got 16 and it was the greatest coaching job ever,
- 53:21[SPEAKER_02]: The answer is yes, it is.
- 53:23[SPEAKER_02]: Indiana 16 and O is so preposterous, it's beyond belief.
- 53:27[SPEAKER_02]: And I think they can do it.
- 53:28[SPEAKER_02]: I actually think they're good enough.
- 53:30[SPEAKER_02]: Although they had a major injury to a defensive end in the fall in the celebration after winning the big championship.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_02]: Not good.
- 53:39[SPEAKER_02]: All right, winners and state winners, we have one game to pick.
- 53:42[SPEAKER_02]: We'll pick it quickly since I closed the document.
- 53:45[SPEAKER_02]: I don't even know what the standings are.
- 53:47[SPEAKER_02]: I just thought it was.
- 53:48[SPEAKER_00]: Is that so Pat?
- 53:49[SPEAKER_00]: Is that so Pat?
- 53:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you don't, you guys don't want to talk about going one and four last week between the two of you.
- 53:54[SPEAKER_02]: I don't recall.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_02]: I don't recall.
- 53:56[SPEAKER_03]: I'm having audio problems.
- 53:57[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't hear anything to Brian just said.
- 54:00[SPEAKER_02]: Brian, I think continues to win, uh, we continue to lose, I think Genos in the middle I'm at the bottom, of course, uh, but there are one game Army Navy.
- 54:12[SPEAKER_02]: Wonderful game.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_02]: Love it every year.
- 54:14[SPEAKER_02]: Love everything about both programs, uh, and both teams are good, which is great.
- 54:19[SPEAKER_02]: I, I, I, I, I, I, I'm very happy when both teams are good.
- 54:23[SPEAKER_02]: In this instance, uh, Navy's giving
- 54:31[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, you know, the head says this is going to be a tight low scoring randomly decided in the fourth quarter type of affair that always seems to be the case in this game.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_00]: I am going to go with Navy though, both heart and head say the Navy, just just the better team this year.
- 54:48[SPEAKER_00]: You know what, and I think the more explosive office, I think in this case,
- 55:00[SPEAKER_03]: I agree to you on many levels, Brian, but I also have spent considerable time during this season, touting the many accomplishments of Jeff Monk and, and I guess I need to put my money where my Monk and is, well, I think, Brian Newberry is a fabulous coach and has done great work there, and, and I do think Navy is the better team this season.
- 55:25[SPEAKER_03]: I will take the six and a half points and hope for a tight game.
- 55:30[SPEAKER_02]: Oh boy, I was hoping you guys would both go Navy so I could go Army and try to regain a little here.
- 55:36[SPEAKER_02]: But what's the point?
- 55:38[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not regaining enough.
- 55:39[SPEAKER_02]: So give me, give me Navy.
- 55:42[SPEAKER_02]: I just did the diversity of the offense.
- 55:44[SPEAKER_02]: They've got more weapons.
- 55:45[SPEAKER_02]: They've been able to, they've been pretty darn explosive.
- 55:48[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm taking the midshipmen.
- 55:50[SPEAKER_02]: We'll be watching salute to all players involved and all members of the student body of both schools.
- 55:57[SPEAKER_02]: All right, real quick, before we go guys, we have to hit this, a Christmas themed scandal of sorts at a prison in South Carolina and the AP continues to come through with creative writing, this is tremendous.
- 56:27[SPEAKER_02]: with steak, weed, and crab legs, and cigarettes for days, and to season it all, a tin of old bay.
- 56:36[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, a drone dropped in, a luxury meal, cigarettes and pot for some lucky,
- 56:46[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, prisoner, unfortunately not lucky enough because they didn't get it.
- 56:50[SPEAKER_02]: The guards got it instead.
- 56:51[SPEAKER_02]: I guess they ate the ingredients.
- 56:54[SPEAKER_02]: I hope the steak and the crab legs could Stay fresh enough to eat here.
- 56:59[SPEAKER_02]: The steak was not cooked.
- 57:01[SPEAKER_02]: It was still in the shrink wrapped like you just pulled out of the grocery.
- 57:05[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, but I have to ask you my question gentlemen.
- 57:09[SPEAKER_02]: First of all,
- 57:10[SPEAKER_02]: genius or not, but secondly, if you're in prison, if you're in the if you're in the lockup and you've got to have a Christmas meal dropped in for you.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_02]: What do you order in?
- 57:21[SPEAKER_03]: First of all, that sounds like a 40 family Christmas.
- 57:26[SPEAKER_02]: Including the location.
- 57:27[SPEAKER_02]: It's not out of the question.
- 57:29[SPEAKER_02]: You might have some relatives in the lockup.
- 57:31[SPEAKER_03]: I am living in the Chicago area where we have something called Chicago beef sandwiches.
- 57:38[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if you've ever had one, but there are some very fine Chicago beef restaurants.
- 57:45[SPEAKER_03]: One right down the street.
- 57:46[SPEAKER_03]: And I am a sucker for all things, Chicago beef sandwich.
- 57:52[SPEAKER_03]: We call them baptized, where you would basically dunk them into the sauce.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_03]: So that would be my meal.
- 58:00[SPEAKER_03]: What's the sauce?
- 58:02[SPEAKER_03]: I was kind of like a beef gravy sauce.
- 58:05[SPEAKER_03]: Sweet.
- 58:06[SPEAKER_03]: That's good.
- 58:07[SPEAKER_03]: It's an angel plastic waiting to happen, but they're delicious.
- 58:12[SPEAKER_03]: Brian, you got a prison meal?
- 58:13[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, steak and crab blood sounds pretty good to me, you know, like I don't think he can go wrong on that one.
- 58:19[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe some scallops, you know, I'm a sucker for scallops.
- 58:22[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how that would necessarily fair if you're getting an air drop.
- 58:26[SPEAKER_00]: So I'll stick with the steak and the in the crab gloves because there.
- 58:30[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's I'm afraid you're a little high maintenance here and a little overly optimistic about the the shelf life of said drone drop for that reason look I'm going give me like a Shakespeare's pizza from Columbia, Missouri because what if pizza first of all if it drops hard it's not going to be messed up if it sits there for a few hours before you can get to it fine.
- 58:52[SPEAKER_02]: Cole pizza's okay.
- 58:54[SPEAKER_02]: I was on a TV show called Cole pizza for quite a while at one point at ESPN.
- 58:58[SPEAKER_02]: So I think you have to tailor your prison food drop to the circumstances.
- 59:04[SPEAKER_02]: How long is it going to take you to get it?
- 59:07[SPEAKER_02]: And are you having to have to battle the guards to get it as well?
- 59:11[SPEAKER_03]: That sounds like a guy who serves some hard time in County,
- 59:19[SPEAKER_02]: You know, look, I mean, we've lived a hard life over here, you know?
- 59:23[SPEAKER_02]: It's great off the streets of the mean streets of Colorado Springs, you know how it goes.
- 59:30[SPEAKER_02]: So anyway, clearly, and that's our show.
- 59:32[SPEAKER_02]: That's enough.
- 59:33[SPEAKER_02]: Appreciate everybody listening.
- 59:34[SPEAKER_02]: Appreciate Ivan Mezzell for being a guest.
- 59:37[SPEAKER_02]: We appreciate Facebook for the comments to respond to.
- 59:41[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody have a great weekend and we'll be back next week.
