- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Should you go see Spider-Man Brand New Day?
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: It's not a question if I recommend you go see Spider-Man Brand New Day or when you go see Spider-Man Brand New Day.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: The fact of the matter is, most humans alive on this planet will at some point see this movie.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: So I don't have to recommend you going to see this movie, but what I will recommend is that you lower your expectations going into this movie, and that is not to say that it is anything I would consider to be a bad movie.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: I enjoyed myself, I was entertained, but I also tempered my expectations and what I thought I was going to see.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Now I will say this movie lacks a bit of the charm that the first three home trilogy movies had.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: What they possessed was the fun high school years of Peter Parker and his amazing friends.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Here with Brand New Day is the follow-up to just a monumental multiversal mayhem movie that was No Way Home.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Now, in this movie, things are toned down.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: It doesn't feel as big, and that's not to say there aren't plenty of big CGI effects, huge sets and cameos and crossovers, all of this business, that's all there, but it feels so much smaller, and that was a creative decision.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: So that is something you need to bear in mind, keep in mind when you're watching this movie, because you may not see the grandiose large-scale high-stakes, big action type of story.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Now you're going to see the movie and think there was plenty of action in this movie.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: It's not quite the same.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: The biggest comparison, the most accurate comparison I can give Spider-Man Brand New Day, is well, I compare it to a lot of teen drama shows.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Now, what I mean by that is think of shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer or even Dawson's Creek.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: The whole show premise for either of the series is it starts out in high school, and many of these popular shows, it was a lot of fun to watch these characters grow as they have teen angst and high school problems.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Post high school, once they get into the college years, uh things stop being fun.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Fun kind of dies.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Now you have your characters forced to navigate into the real world, and something very similar is happening in Spider-Man Brand New Day.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Now, a lot of other high school dramas they did time jumps.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Now, I do give credit where credit is due.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: It's a brave thing to just march straight on to the college years, the young adult, new adult years.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: But the fact of the matter is, we didn't get as much of a St.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Elmo's Fire 20-something drama here.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: It was less fun than that, and you didn't have Demi Moore crying alone in like an air-conditioned room or something.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Now, the the you you had ninjas, which is not nothing, but in this movie, life real life hit our characters pretty hard.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Now, again, it is a follow-up to No Way Home, and you're not going to be able to match that scale.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: So I do appreciate the approach of not even really trying, but what the end result was, well, they wanted it to be grounded, it was really grounded, and that's says a lot about a movie that spends a lot of its time swinging across buildings high above the ground.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Now, it's difficult to really go in depth without providing spoilers, and I want to keep this spoiler-free.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: But what I will say is the antagonist, the villains, extra characters in this movie, some of the newer ones, they of course need a lot of screen time to explain what their whole deal is, but I think it came at a cost.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: I think it wasn't worth the sacrifice of pushing not only the likes of Ned and MJ, maybe lesser.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: They still got plenty, but not maybe as much as I would have liked.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: And we also shrunk some of the longtime Spider-Man related characters, and some didn't appear at all that I had expected.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: So this was like a very kind of awkward phase of Spider-Man, and I think a lot of creative decisions came in here because maybe they weren't as focused on just Spider-Man problems, but there was like a huge, maybe it's a huge MCU mandate, big note.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: You have to set up Doomsday, you have to set up Secret Wars.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: Old news, every Marvel movie is a commercial for the next movie.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: But I think in Brand New Day, I think it really suffered.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: I think there was a different decision that could have been made with the inclusion of a particular character whose significance to Spider-Man left me scratching my head.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: It services Marvel, the MCU as as a whole, but after seeing the movie, I'm like, I think that could have been somebody else.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Now, I don't want to name names.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: If you haven't seen it, go see it.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: You will see it.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: You're if you have a pulse, you'll probably see this movie.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: But I won't spoil it just yet.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: The thing about this, what you really need to know going in, is that of the four Tom Holland movies as Spider-Man, this is the worst one.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Not saying it's bad.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: I had a good time, I had fun, I was entertained.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: But out of four Spider-Man movies, solo movies, it ranks in fourth place.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: It's last.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Like I said before, the high school salad days are over and we are left with middling meat of Spider-Man aging, and he should age, he should evolve, he should grow.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: But it kind of mirrors real life a little too much because while growing older, becoming more of an adult, it's boring.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: Let me know what you think of Spider-Man brand new day.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Let me know if you think all of the extra characters who weren't specifically related directly to Spider-Man should have been there.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Yes, most of these characters have interacted in some way over the decades, but I really think there was some more direct, specific Spidey related characters that could have either been there at all or been there more.
