- 1:27Speaker 1: And also next Sunday, October 25th. So much love for
- 1:30Speaker 1: Susan G. Coming to fight breast cancer. And they're big
- 1:32Speaker 1: more than pink walk. It'd be a big sea of
- 1:34Speaker 1: pink supporters, survivors, those walking in honor of someone that
- 1:39Speaker 1: we lost. Ah, in honor of my Auntie April who
- 1:42Speaker 1: lost her battle after the second time with this darn disease.
- 1:45Speaker 1: One of my best friends, Toby, that's living with metastatic
- 1:48Speaker 1: stage four breast cancer.
- 1:50Speaker 2: That's been a battle of her whole body. God bless her.
- 1:53Speaker 2: She's still with us, Toby.
- 1:55Speaker 1: If you know, love anybody who was affected by breast

- 1:59Speaker 1: come join us next Sunday.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Come on out and join us next Sunday.
- 2:04Speaker 1: My guest we just had on, Nisha Jamie, sharing her
- 2:07Speaker 1: breast cancer journey.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Wow, what a great lady. Join her team, the Fight
- 2:11Speaker 2: Club team.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Join hers or a big iHeartRadio or iHeartMedia team out
- 2:15Speaker 1: there next Sunday. LA State Historic Park for the big
- 2:18Speaker 1: Susan G. Komen, more than PinkWalk. Komen.org for all the info.
- 2:23Speaker 1: And also next Sunday, October 25th, is our other featured
- 2:26Speaker 1: guest from last weekend, Lisa Manheim, doing the annual 29th
- 2:30Speaker 1: annual LA Cancer Challenge at UCLA. And look, we know
- 2:34Speaker 1: cancer is not fun, but they make the event fun.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Be amongst your peers if you know or love anyone
- 2:39Speaker 1: who's been affected by pancreatic cancer.
- 2:41Speaker 2: That's what this event is all about.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Posies go to benefit the Hirshberg for Pancreatic Cancer Research,
- 2:47Speaker 1: the Hirshberg Foundation. They've done so much since Lisa lost
- 2:51Speaker 1: her stepdad to this disease. over 30 years ago and
- 2:53Speaker 1: they are making incredible strides. So they're asking people to,
- 2:57Speaker 1: encouraging folks to, Come in your Halloween costumes. Do a
- 2:59Speaker 1: bit of a 5K around the beautiful UCLA campus. Halloween
- 3:02Speaker 1: costumes for you, your pets, your kids, whoever, whatever you
- 3:05Speaker 1: want to do. Make it enjoyable and be amongst your people.
- 3:08Speaker 1: They're doing a big family expo as well right there.
- 3:10Speaker 1: So just go to.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Pancreatic.org for all the info on that. All right.
- 3:15Speaker 1: And again, next Sunday, a very busy day, but a
- 3:18Speaker 1: lot of good things happening to give back in so
- 3:20Speaker 1: many amazing ways.
- 3:21Speaker 2: That includes our friends at UCLA.
- 3:23Speaker 1: UCLA Health's 26th annual Party on the pier in Santa
- 3:27Speaker 1: Monica next Sunday, the 25th from 10 to 2.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Super fun things happening. Enjoy all the carnival games.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Prizes, unlimited rides, celebrity appearances, tons of crafts, treats, and
- 3:38Speaker 1: so much more. With all proceeds going to support vital
- 3:40Speaker 1: hospital programs. research, and innovative treatments for kids and their
- 3:44Speaker 1: families through UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital.
- 3:47Speaker 2: And on to tell us more.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Oh, tickets at partyonthepier.ucla.edu, partyonthepier.ucla.edu. But on to tell us
- 3:56Speaker 1: all about it is a UCLA Health CEO and President,
- 3:59Speaker 1: Jonacy Spizo.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Hi, Jonacy.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Hi, how are you? Oh, my gosh.
- 4:04Speaker 2: So good. Another big fun event.
- 4:06Speaker 1: A great way to kind of get people out to
- 4:07Speaker 1: have a good time because obviously being a sick kid
- 4:10Speaker 1: at a hospital is a tough time on the child
- 4:13Speaker 1: and their family. So this is a great way to
- 4:15Speaker 1: kind of get people out. and to raise money and
- 4:18Speaker 1: kind of raise awareness as to what these kids go through,
- 4:20Speaker 1: but how many great programs you have to help get
- 4:22Speaker 1: them better, help get them.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Better, right?
- 4:25Speaker 3: Yes, absolutely. Our Party on the Pier is our signature
- 4:28Speaker 3: annual fundraising event for UCLA's Mattel Children's Hospital, and it
- 4:33Speaker 3: really brings together our patients and their families, community leaders, philanthropists,
- 4:39Speaker 3: our healthcare professionals, to really raise funding and awareness for
- 4:43Speaker 3: children's health at UCLA. So we really like to see
- 4:46Speaker 3: everyone having an amazing day of fun and entertainment and
- 4:50Speaker 3: play on the iconic Santa Monica Pier.
- 4:53Speaker 1: And, you know, and again, for what the kids are
- 4:55Speaker 1: going through with whatever their illness may be, I mean,
- 4:58Speaker 1: to feel like a kid for a day and to
- 5:01Speaker 1: get back out there, you know, like what a joy
- 5:03Speaker 1: for them if they're able to, you know, depending on
- 5:06Speaker 1: what they're going through illness-wise, to be out there with
- 5:09Speaker 1: their families a little break from just being sick full-time, right?
- 5:13Speaker 3: Absolutely. It gives them a day to just be a
- 5:16Speaker 3: kid again and really enjoy all the fun things outside
- 5:19Speaker 3: of the hospital and spend time with their siblings. And
- 5:24Speaker 3: it's just, it's really great. And that the fund raised,
- 5:27Speaker 3: the funds that are raised help support our highest priority
- 5:30Speaker 3: programs for patients and their families. And the donations support
- 5:34Speaker 3: not only pediatric patient care, but research and innovative wraparound
- 5:38Speaker 3: support programs, all the things that we need that really
- 5:42Speaker 3: help us deliver that world-class care to the patients and
- 5:45Speaker 3: their families.
- 5:46Speaker 1: And for folks who don't know, what kinds of things
- 5:48Speaker 1: are the kids going through there at UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital?
- 5:51Speaker 2: What kinds of things?
- 5:52Speaker 1: We're going to guess all kinds of cancers, but it's
- 5:54Speaker 1: probably just all kinds of things we wouldn't wish on anybody,
- 5:56Speaker 1: but especially not a child.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Everything. Yes. We care for some of the most critically
- 6:02Speaker 3: ill and injured children from not only L.A., but from
- 6:06Speaker 3: all over the state and referrals from all over the country.
- 6:09Speaker 3: We are a large center not only for leading-edge cancer
- 6:13Speaker 3: care in the pediatric population, but programs around all the neurosciences,
- 6:19Speaker 3: all the things that we do with epilepsy, with all
- 6:23Speaker 3: of the neurodegenerative disorders. All of the emerging things with
- 6:29Speaker 3: research that are now used to treat some of the
- 6:32Speaker 3: neuro disorders are available here. And then a major solid
- 6:36Speaker 3: organ transplant center for pediatric patients. So both solid organ
- 6:41Speaker 3: and blood and marrow transplantation. So those are big programs.
- 6:46Speaker 3: And then a huge program in congenital cardiac issues. So
- 6:49Speaker 3: we take care of babies from the time they're born
- 6:52Speaker 3: all the way up through adulthood with really... And, you know, so.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Crazy for any parents listening right now or just human
- 7:03Speaker 1: beings listening going, gosh, I can't even imagine having to
- 7:06Speaker 1: go through this, let alone it being a child. But
- 7:09Speaker 1: to know that a hospital with your level of care
- 7:11Speaker 1: and expertise is available to people.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Is kind of exciting, right? And comforting to know that
- 7:18Speaker 2: you're here to do all this.
- 7:20Speaker 3: It is. And so many of the groundbreaking treatments for diseases,
- 7:25Speaker 3: particularly in the pediatric population, have been developed here at UCLA.
- 7:29Speaker 3: And so we have some of the newest therapies that
- 7:31Speaker 3: offer people and children particularly the best outcomes. And it
- 7:35Speaker 3: is the combination of the world-class care in the hospital
- 7:39Speaker 3: and clinics, and then our David Geffen School of Medicine,
- 7:42Speaker 3: which houses the leading researchers that are really spending their
- 7:47Speaker 3: life really pioneering better treatments for children.
- 7:49Speaker 1: And I was gonna say, yeah, it sounds like it's
- 7:51Speaker 1: all on site right there on campus in Westwood.
- 7:54Speaker 2: So it's all right there. So you don't have to
- 7:56Speaker 2: really outsource.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Yes, that's true. We have everyone working together. And we
- 8:01Speaker 3: like to say it's that bench to bedside translation of
- 8:05Speaker 3: the latest treatments and cures for patients.
- 8:07Speaker 1: So much care available for young people who are going
- 8:10Speaker 1: through so much at UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital. When you
- 8:13Speaker 1: buy a ticket for a party on the pier, it
- 8:15Speaker 1: will help in so many areas, helping these kids through,
- 8:18Speaker 1: you know, pediatric oncology, pediatric neurology, critical care, orthopedics, cardiology,
- 8:24Speaker 1: and so much more. And John, let's see, what is
- 8:27Speaker 1: your background? How did you become to be the CEO
- 8:30Speaker 1: of of this organization.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Yeah. Share with your background.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:33Speaker 3: So I've been in healthcare about 40 years, but I
- 8:36Speaker 3: actually started my career as a registered nurse in critical care.
- 8:39Speaker 3: So I do have a clinical background, then went on
- 8:42Speaker 3: and certainly got a master's degree in more of the
- 8:46Speaker 3: business and management type related fields. And I've really worked
- 8:49Speaker 3: at every rung of the ladder from staff nurse to
- 8:52Speaker 3: charge nurse to nurse manager to chief nursing officer to
- 8:56Speaker 3: then chief operating officer, then CEO of one hospital, and
- 8:59Speaker 3: CEO of a system. So I've had a great opportunity
- 9:03Speaker 3: in my career to learn a lot along the way.
- 9:06Speaker 3: And I've been at UCLA now for 10 years. Prior
- 9:09Speaker 3: to that, I spent 22 years at UW Medicine in Seattle.
- 9:12Speaker 3: But it's been just great here working at UCLA and
- 9:16Speaker 3: particularly seeing all the research and discovery come together.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I was going to say, I feel like I can
- 9:22Speaker 1: hear a sense of pride in your voice. You know,
- 9:24Speaker 1: being the CEO, representing this organization because of all the
- 9:29Speaker 1: great work that's happening there on campus in Westwood. And
- 9:32Speaker 1: to help these kids and their families get through the
- 9:35Speaker 1: toughest of times with these illnesses and situations.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Yes, definitely. A really exciting place to be.
- 9:42Speaker 1: And then throughout the year, we have the holidays upon us.
- 9:44Speaker 1: And throughout the year, you do a lot of fundraisers
- 9:46Speaker 1: and ways that bring people together to help these kids.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Talk about the TLC the kids get. You know, it's
- 9:51Speaker 1: not just hospital research and, you.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Know, needles and tubes and all the not fun stuff.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Talk about the fun stuff.
- 9:59Speaker 1: I know when we raise this money at the party
- 10:01Speaker 1: on the pier, it's going to be a fun day,
- 10:04Speaker 1: plus the funds you raise. But talk about the TLC
- 10:06Speaker 1: as you wrap your arms around these kids and what.
- 10:08Speaker 3: They're going through. We do wonderful things with funds raised.
- 10:11Speaker 3: First of all, we have a very vibrant child life
- 10:14Speaker 3: department with child life therapists who work with the children
- 10:18Speaker 3: every day on... age-appropriate play. We have a school teacher
- 10:23Speaker 3: program so that they can stay caught up in their
- 10:26Speaker 3: school studies. And then we'll do our next big event
- 10:29Speaker 3: will be our big Halloween party. We partner with Spirit Halloween.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Every child gets to pick their Halloween costumes. We have
- 10:37Speaker 3: our pet therapy team, 97 pet therapists that dress up
- 10:42Speaker 3: in costume for the Children's Hospital. This year, they're going
- 10:46Speaker 3: to be also getting nothing but cakes delivered to them.
- 10:51Speaker 3: And then from there, we'll go into our holiday parties.
- 10:54Speaker 3: for the holiday season with a huge toy drive. And
- 10:59Speaker 3: we have so many toys that are given not only
- 11:01Speaker 3: to the children, but their siblings as well. And we
- 11:05Speaker 3: set up a little shopping area so that hospitalized patients,
- 11:09Speaker 3: free of charge, can pick donated toys to give their
- 11:12Speaker 3: siblings as gifts. So it's really sweet.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Again, especially with the kids going through so much
- 11:19Speaker 1: who are sick, and then the families are going through it.
- 11:22Speaker 1: essentially as well because they're there stressed and worried and
- 11:26Speaker 1: try to be at their bedside and be there as
- 11:28Speaker 1: they're getting this treatment, this hopefully life-saving treatment to have
- 11:32Speaker 1: them come out on the other side okay and back
- 11:34Speaker 1: with their families.
- 11:35Speaker 2: So it's a lot on these families.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Exactly, exactly.
- 11:38Speaker 1: And then we're lucky for Party on the Pier hopefully
- 11:40Speaker 1: to happen before fall really kicks in. We're going to
- 11:43Speaker 1: have our final big summer bash at the pier, Santa
- 11:46Speaker 1: Monica Pier.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Yes. 26 years, pretty incredible. Like you said, it's a
- 11:51Speaker 2: signature event.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Yes, it is. We're so proud of the partnership.
- 11:54Speaker 2: What's our dress code, John and C? What's our dress code?
- 11:56Speaker 3: What do we think? Anything that is fun.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Yes.
- 11:59Speaker 3: I hope we're going to have great weather. So dress
- 12:02Speaker 3: for a nice warm day on the pier.
- 12:04Speaker 2: And easy again to buy those tickets. Partyonthepeer.ucla.edu. Carnival games.
- 12:09Speaker 2: We're doing carnival games. We're doing prizes.
- 12:11Speaker 1: We're doing unlimited rides. So unlimited, the roller coaster. We'll
- 12:14Speaker 1: do a little skeet ball. They got all the games
- 12:16Speaker 1: right there. Everything on site right there. Santa Monica Pier.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Any fun celebrities that sell celebrity appearances? Anybody fun dropping
- 12:22Speaker 1: by that we might know?
- 12:23Speaker 2: Anybody fun?
- 12:24Speaker 3: We do. We'll be sharing that list soon as soon
- 12:27Speaker 3: as we have all the confirmations in. But yes, definitely
- 12:30Speaker 3: always have the celebrities, particularly the young ones that are there.
- 12:34Speaker 1: To support and also people just who the heart goes
- 12:37Speaker 1: out to the kids and the families who are going
- 12:39Speaker 1: through so much.
- 12:39Speaker 2: So crafts, treats.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 12:42Speaker 2: An incredible fun day.
- 12:43Speaker 1: And then again, the money goes to all these programs
- 12:45Speaker 1: and research and just their unwavering commitment to family-centered care,
- 12:50Speaker 1: access to innovative therapies, specialized emotional support and language services
- 12:54Speaker 1: to ensure that all families receive effective communication. They're all
- 12:58Speaker 1: about being a place where patients can find hope, health,
- 13:02Speaker 1: and a healing environment. And again, when you buy a
- 13:04Speaker 1: ticket to Party on the Pier, their 26th annual Party
- 13:07Speaker 1: on the Pier next.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Sunday, the 25th, at the Santa Monica Pier from 10
- 13:10Speaker 2: to 2.
- 13:11Speaker 1: You are empowering UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital, their mission to
- 13:15Speaker 1: provide state-of-the-art treatment to kids in a compassionate atmosphere, as
- 13:18Speaker 1: well as conduct research that improves the understanding and treatment
- 13:22Speaker 1: of pediatric diseases, and to train the next generation of
- 13:25Speaker 1: leaders in pediatrics.
- 13:27Speaker 2: All this stuff.
- 13:27Speaker 1: So get your tickets now, 26th annual Party on the Pier,
- 13:30Speaker 1: benefiting UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital. Next Sunday, the 25th, enjoy

- 13:39Speaker 1: so much more. And all proceeds go to support vital
- 13:42Speaker 1: hospital programs, research, and innovative treatments for kids and families.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Get your tickets now, partyonthepeer.ucla.edu, partyonthepeer.ucla.edu. And I thank you
- 13:53Speaker 1: so much to their CEO and president, Jonassie Spizo.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Thank you, Jonassie. We'll see you next Sunday.
- 13:58Speaker 3: Thank you so much.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Okay, thank you. Have a great day. Bye-bye.
- 14:02Speaker 2: You too. Thanks.
