- 0:00Greetings to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and welcome to another
- 0:04episode of our United Church of Tonga Youth Devotion.
- 0:08Our Bible passage for today is taken from Matthew 9, verse 9, which says,
- 0:15As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting in the text
- 0:20collector's booth, and he said to him, Follow me.
- 0:24And he got up and followed him.
- 0:26Our theme for today, Jesus is calling you.
- 0:31What would you do if you were the text collector Jesus called to follow him?
- 0:36Text collectors worked for the Roman government and their work was considered shameful at the time.
- 0:42The Jewish people did not like them because they were practically thieves.
- 0:47They took more than they should have and they kept some for themselves.
- 0:52Matthew was one of these tax collectors, and he was corrupt.
- 0:57So who would want to hire someone with a corrupt life?
- 1:01Jesus had just finished healing a paralyzed man and was continuing on his journey
- 1:06when he saw Matthew working at the tax collector's booth.
- 1:10He called out to him, Follow me.
- 1:13Jesus knew Matthew's corrupt nature and work.
- 1:19But what's interesting is that Jesus did not wait for Matthew to change his
- 1:23ways before calling him.
- 1:25Jesus had already chosen and predestined Matthew's life before the foundation
- 1:29of this world to be one of his disciples.
- 1:33He knew that no one can change Matthew's life but Jesus himself.
- 1:39Here, Jesus also shows us that he calls people to follow him,
- 1:44not based on our merits, but on his grace.
- 1:48What's interesting is that Matthew did not refuse or rationalize with Jesus.
- 1:54He straightaway stood up and obeyed the call. Maybe Matthew was just fed up with being corrupt.
- 2:00Maybe he needed a new beginning or a new life.
- 2:05Perhaps this is you today. Jesus is calling you to follow him.
- 2:10Maybe he's been calling you over the last few years.
- 2:15But what has been your excuse so far? That you're still young?
- 2:19Or that you are too messed up to be used by Jesus?
- 2:23You may be like Moses, saying that he can't speak in front of people.
- 2:28You may say you're too busy. Maybe too busy with your studies, with work, with life.
- 2:37When we respond to God's calling in faith and humility, He will work to transform us from the inside out.
- 2:46No matter how corrupted our lives may be, Jesus calls us to follow Him.
- 2:52He is merciful and loving.
- 2:56His grace is sufficient for all. Let us pray.
- 3:01Lord Jesus, give me the courage to be like Matthew and obey your calling for my life.
- 3:09I apologize for making so many excuses not to follow you.
- 3:14Take over my life today and transform me into the person you had planned for me to be.
- 3:22In Jesus' name, Amen.
