- 0:18I hope you don't have it too.
- 0:20Jon: Welcome to Xenomania.
- 0:22Kearns: Welcome to Xenomania.
- 0:24We don't have aid space.
- 0:26everybody.
- 0:26Ryan: No, we don't.
- 0:28Jon: Hi, Dr. Nick.
- 0:29Kearns: So we're starting out this episode with another, starting out
- 0:34this episode with another blind ranking from the Maniacal Mind of John.
- 0:38Jon: Oh yeah.
- 0:40I'm gonna share my screen for you guys.
- 0:43Ryan: Got my homework.
- 0:44Jon: Um, tire.
- 0:47Let's do it.
- 0:50Share.
- 0:52Here we go.
- 0:53You got me?
- 0:54Ryan: All right.
- 0:55Kearns: I see it.
- 0:56Jon: Yep.
- 0:57So, movie number one for you on this themed up to six points.
- 1:02Blind ranking is maniac.
- 1:06Kearns: Why is there a bulge in his pants?
- 1:09Is that just the lighting?
- 1:11Ryan: No.
- 1:11Jon: No, I think it's, I think it's both bulge and lighting.
- 1:14Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:15Kearns: It's a double whammy.
- 1:16Jon: Yeah.
- 1:17Kearns: A double whammy.
- 1:18Ryan: Ooh.
- 1:19Jon: Yep.
- 1:19Yep.
- 1:20Kearns: see here.
- 1:21Jon: I mean, I think the theme of our podcast is now dongs anyway, so.
- 1:25Kearns: Yeah, at this point it's very dog heavy.
- 1:30Alright,
- 1:31Jon: All right, so gimme a rank for maniac.
- 1:33Kearns: All right.
- 1:33I am gonna just hit four.
- 1:35Jon: All right.
- 1:36Kearns: Safe.
- 1:36That would be three, but I feel like four.
- 1:38Ryan: gonna go with three.
- 1:40I'm gonna go with the middle
- 1:41Kearns: What's the last time I saw this movie?
- 1:43Jon: All right.
- 1:44Ryan: It's a
- 1:45Jon: Our next movie,
- 1:49basket case.
- 1:55Kearns: This is a trap.
- 1:57Jon: Yeah, of course.
- 1:57It's a trap.
- 1:59Kearns: This is a trap.
- 2:00I mean it, you can't go wrong with basket.
- 2:02Case at at lowest number two.
- 2:05Jon: All right.
- 2:06Kearns: Basket case is so good.
- 2:07I'm gonna hit two for basket.
- 2:08I'm gonna write this down.
- 2:09Jon: I got 'em.
- 2:10Ryan: I'm going on.
- 2:11Kearns: You're writing on this
- 2:12Jon: Yep.
- 2:13Kearns: so we can't shoot.
- 2:15Jon: Where you going, Ryan?
- 2:16Ryan: I'm gonna go number two with it as well.
- 2:20Jon: All righty.
- 2:20Ryan: have it written down.
- 2:21Just see,
- 2:23Kearns: This is tough.
- 2:24This is gonna be tough.
- 2:25Jon: Next movie.
- 2:27Kearns: thing be
- 2:28Jon: Street Trash.
- 2:30Ryan: Uh, I gotta
- 2:32Jon: Oh.
- 2:32Do we have any guesses on theme here?
- 2:37Kearns: mutate?
- 2:38Well, basket case isn't a mutation.
- 2:41Her say
- 2:43Jon: Nope.
- 2:45Kearns: disabled serial killers,
- 2:49Jon: It is not Disabled.
- 2:50Serial Killers,
- 2:52Kearns: why
- 2:53Jon: next week.
- 2:53Ryan: Maybe
- 2:54Kearns: they be next to it?
- 2:55Ryan: on New York City.
- 2:58each
- 2:59Jon: Ooh.
- 3:00Ryan: plague have this like connection with the city.
- 3:03Right.
- 3:03And they.
- 3:04Kearns: If you have Gies on this list.
- 3:06Jon: I am not, I'm not sure if I can count that answer, Ryan.
- 3:11Ryan: Oh,
- 3:12Kearns: Okay.
- 3:13Jon: It's a little
- 3:15Ryan: Vague.
- 3:16Kearns: too vague.
- 3:17Jon: too, it, it's a little too specific.
- 3:20Kearns: Oh, too specific what?
- 3:22For a theme.
- 3:23I, it's gotta be like a universal theme.
- 3:25Like
- 3:26Jon: mean it, I'm gonna count it because these are all New York City movies.
- 3:31Ryan: all right.
- 3:32Kearns: Oh, he got it on a third movie.
- 3:34Jon: Yep.
- 3:35Ryan: right.
- 3:35Jon: Yep.
- 3:35So that's, that's a three for Ryan.
- 3:37I'm guessing the theme now, where are we?
- 3:39Ranking street trash.
- 3:43Ryan: I gotta go four.
- 3:45Lemme go Four.
- 3:47Kearns: I'm hitting it with five.
- 3:51Jon: All right.
- 3:52Kearns: So I got a two, a three, and a five.
- 3:56At least four and one.
- 3:57I'm feeling good about this.
- 4:00Jon: Is the 13th part?
- 4:01Eight
- 4:05Kearns: Dammit.
- 4:06I can't put that ahead of basket case for me.
- 4:09Ryan: Well, it's making me
- 4:10Kearns: Can that be my number one
- 4:12Ryan: though?
- 4:13It's a, if it's a New York City film, what's his number one, and I'll be real.
- 4:18Jon: it.
- 4:18Ryan: Part eight is
- 4:19Jon: It might not be one you think of as New York City either.
- 4:23It's definitely set in New York City.
- 4:25Kearns: gremlins two.
- 4:27Jon: Oh, no.
- 4:28Gremlins too.
- 4:30This is one I have, I probably have 40 or 50 movies that could be on here.
- 4:34So
- 4:35Kearns: Okay.
- 4:35Jon: this again.
- 4:39Kearns: All right.
- 4:40put this at number four, even though I feel like I wish I
- 4:42could swap my three and four now.
- 4:44Jon: I think you didn't, you put maniac four.
- 4:48Kearns: Oh, did I?
- 4:49is a better three.
- 4:51works out.
- 4:52Jon: Ryan.
- 4:53I.
- 4:53Ryan: gonna put it with five.
- 4:54It's not my favorite Friday 13th.
- 4:57It's, I love six.
- 4:58I'll wave a banner for six, four, and three.
- 5:02You know what gets me.
- 5:03Kearns: is a 60 beast.
- 5:04Ryan: the ending when he, the chemical waste turns him back into a child.
- 5:09Like I get it, but it's like that's how we're beating him in New York City.
- 5:13can't
- 5:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 5:14Kearns: It's pretty late.
- 5:15Ryan: State Building or something like, you know,
- 5:19Kearns: I mean, that would've been better.
- 5:20That would've been way better.
- 5:22got King Kong.
- 5:22Jon: I mean for me, this would be far and away, number one, if it was
- 5:27like fully filmed in New York City.
- 5:30Kearns: Got it.
- 5:31Ryan: on a ferry boat.
- 5:33Or the majority I should
- 5:34Jon: So,
- 5:34Kearns: we both, the next one's, both are number ones, which is
- 5:37Jon: it is, which is
- 5:38Kearns: hard.
- 5:39Jon: cinematically is going to work very well.
- 5:43Kearns: Do, do, do, do.
- 5:45Oh, hell yeah.
- 5:45No, I'm cool with this.
- 5:47Ryan: I'm fine with that.
- 5:49Kearns: I've watched this as, um, with other people as their first watch three
- 5:52times, and I've never been disappointed.
- 5:56Incidentally, this is why I, I am so critical of hereditary.
- 6:00I just feel like it's a, unfaithful knockoff
- 6:04bacon.
- 6:05Jon: Yeah, I would agree.
- 6:08Kearns: Like, it, it could have been better
- 6:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 6:13Kearns: It, it literally says it's not what you're expecting.
- 6:17It's the whole stick, everybody.
- 6:20Jon: All right guys, so
- 6:22Kearns: I,
- 6:23Jon: now let me tabulate a point for list quality.
- 6:28Ryan has, Ryan has three for his New York City guests,
- 6:35and
- 6:38I don't know, I think the two spots higher for Friday, the
- 6:4213th part eight separates Kerns.
- 6:45Kearns: oh yeah.
- 6:46Jon: One point to Kerns.
- 6:49Kearns: I got one point.
- 6:50Jon: Yes.
- 6:51Kearns: three.
- 6:51I've got one.
- 6:52Jon: Which by my unofficial makes it three, two Ryan's lead.
- 7:00Kearns: All right.
- 7:02I'm, I'm still in it.
- 7:03I'm still in it.
- 7:04I just, I'm just happy to be at the party when it comes to doing anything
- 7:07regarding horror with you two.
- 7:08I'm just happy to be at the table.
- 7:10Ryan: fun.
- 7:11That's,
- 7:11Kearns: All right, everybody.
- 7:14So, New York City Sewer Systems.
- 7:18This week we are talking about Hun
- 7:21Ryan: Judd, or,
- 7:23Kearns: and now I had never seen Shun before.
- 7:27Ryan: oh, I thought you did.
- 7:30Kearns: No, I'd never seen it.
- 7:31I, I'd seen the,
- 7:34Jon: Oh, that's amazing.
- 7:35I'm so jealous.
- 7:36You guys got to watch it for the first time.
- 7:38Kearns: I thought it was gonna be a crap movie.
- 7:40I saw the cover all the time as a kid, and
- 7:42looks cool.
- 7:43But I never rented it.
- 7:44And, uh, I didn't think that it was gonna be as, uh, I mean, the production
- 7:49value is way higher than I was expecting.
- 7:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:52Mm-hmm.
- 7:53Kearns: one when this came out.
- 7:56was not yet born
- 7:58John was young.
- 7:59Jon: I was a year short of Bar Mitzvah.
- 8:03Kearns: Oh, there you go.
- 8:04Mazel to my friend.
- 8:05Ryan: Muzzles off.
- 8:08Kearns: But it was, it holds up.
- 8:10Guys, you gotta watch this as always.
- 8:12There will be spoilers.
- 8:13We're gonna talk about the whole movie in depth in a
- 8:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:16Kearns: name some of the actors that are in it besides John Goodman.
- 8:18'cause I'm stealing that one.
- 8:19John Goodman's in this.
- 8:20Jon: John Goodman is in this
- 8:22Ryan: best
- 8:23Jon: but we do have John Goodman.
- 8:25Ryan: John Goodman.
- 8:26Before King.
- 8:26Ralph.
- 8:27Before Roseanne, like his
- 8:29Kearns: Way before the Babe.
- 8:31Ryan: yeah.
- 8:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:33Kearns: Way before he was the babe.
- 8:35He was cop number two in Shut.
- 8:38Ryan: Or,
- 8:39Jon: the bunker in Cloverfield Lane.
- 8:42Kearns: I mean, love to be in that bunker with him.
- 8:46Just saying ungrateful.
- 8:48Ryan: with John Goodman is a good time?
- 8:50Sometimes.
- 8:52Jon: I'd,
- 8:53sn I'd snuggle up to him.
- 8:54Kearns: gear right after this because he had those movies.
- 8:57But he was, he was exploding out of Roseanne.
- 9:01America fell in love with him from Roseanne as Dan Connor.
- 9:04just that guy.
- 9:05Everybody just like, he came on screen and you were like, oh, thank God.
- 9:09Dad's mom.
- 9:09Ryan: yeah.
- 9:10Jon: Yep.
- 9:10Kearns: Like he was nice.
- 9:11It was nice.
- 9:12Jon: Yes.
- 9:13So, who else do we have?
- 9:14We get John Heard.
- 9:16Kearns: John heard was a cool surprise too.
- 9:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:18Ryan: Yes.
- 9:18Kearns: out he's in it real
- 9:20I was like, what the hell's he doing in this?
- 9:22Wasn't he in the toy or was it uh, toy?
- 9:26No, it was big.
- 9:27He's like the jackass Wall Street
- 9:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:30Kearns: Yeah.
- 9:31Ryan: He's in big.
- 9:32He's in, in a lot
- 9:34Kearns: Oh, he's the dad in home alone.
- 9:36Ryan: Home Alone, one and two.
- 9:37He was also in The
- 9:38Kearns: Like you see his face and you know him.
- 9:41Oh, it's right.
- 9:41Yeah.
- 9:42He plays an asshole cop in Sopranos.
- 9:44Ryan: in snake eyes.
- 9:45Kearns: The movie with Nicholas Cage.
- 9:48That's an interesting reference.
- 9:50I happen to have seen that in theaters.
- 9:52Ryan: I love snake ice.
- 9:53I wa uh, it's just iconic cover.
- 9:55He's been in a lot of movies though.
- 9:58Uh, John Heard.
- 10:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:01Kearns: everything.
- 10:02Ryan: other actor who's also in it.
- 10:03The good old reverend, one of my favorites.
- 10:05Daniel Stern,
- 10:07Jon: Yep.
- 10:08Ryan: a home aloneness.
- 10:09Jon: I, mm-hmm.
- 10:12I, I had to, I'm glad I looked.
- 10:15Daniel Stern up 'cause we almost had a Tim Curry moment.
- 10:18Ryan: thought he was dead?
- 10:20Jon: I have somewhere in my brain, I have him confused
- 10:23with somebody else who is dead
- 10:26Kearns: Oh,
- 10:27thank God it's not him.
- 10:28Jon: I'm not sure who.
- 10:30Kearns: Oh geez.
- 10:31Jon: I spent a good half an hour in this rabbit hole this afternoon, trying
- 10:34to figure out who I thought was dead.
- 10:36Ryan: I kill by mistake?
- 10:38Kearns: Epic.
- 10:38Jon: Who's dead.
- 10:41Kearns: The wet bandit?
- 10:41No, he's alive.
- 10:42We, by the way, listeners, we've been sending each other memes, Tim Curry memes
- 10:45since I, I killed him off prematurely.
- 10:49Ryan: bars, manically
- 10:51Kearns: he's doing Tim Curry's things out there.
- 10:53He's,
- 10:54Jon: He very much is.
- 10:55Kearns: or not, but he is very alive.
- 10:57Jon: He is very alive.
- 10:59Kearns: yeah, getting his newspaper and stuff.
- 11:01Ryan: what do you
- 11:02Kearns: Chu
- 11:02Ryan: was gonna say speak about a
- 11:03Kearns: Oh, sorry.
- 11:04Ryan: Christopher Curry who plays,
- 11:06Jon: We do.
- 11:08Ryan: I think
- 11:08Jon: I.
- 11:08Ryan: Bosch.
- 11:09I was gonna call him Lieutenant Bosch, and he's also in Starship
- 11:12Kearns: That's right.
- 11:12Ryan: as Rico's father.
- 11:14Jon: So I'm not as, I'm not very well versed on art.
- 11:18So maybe you guys can fill in this blank.
- 11:21Maybe listeners can fill in this blank spot for me.
- 11:24I know there is an artist named Harus Bosh.
- 11:28Kearns: Oh, cool.
- 11:29Jon: I just wonder if there's not some hidden connection to the character type
- 11:37in the artist or the movie and the art.
- 11:39I know he, it was known for like kind of hellish, demented artwork.
- 11:46Ryan: Hmm.
- 11:46Kearns: It's gotta be an
- 11:47Jon: I'm sure it has to be a nod.
- 11:50Kearns: yeah, it's gotta be, I'd be like, if you had like Charles Banksy
- 11:55the movie and you weren't referencing, you know, the Banksy art and stuff,
- 11:59Jon: Yeah.
- 12:00Yeah.
- 12:01Kearns: But Cool man.
- 12:03Um, so let's give the people a little taste of Chd.
- 12:05I like the opening scene.
- 12:07They had me hooked right away.
- 12:08Ryan: It's an awesome opening scene.
- 12:10They just kinda, take you into it right away.
- 12:13The woman's just walking her dog.
- 12:15It's all calm.
- 12:16And then you just see her get pulled down.
- 12:19You hear the yelp of the dog and it's a
- 12:22Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:22Ryan: awesome opening.
- 12:23'cause you see the street sweeper just kind of taking the trash away.
- 12:27Like it was like she was, to me, from a film perspective, I felt like
- 12:32it's just like once she was gone, it was like left to the streets.
- 12:35She was technically street trash.
- 12:38And that's how it like, kind of
- 12:39Jon: Yeah.
- 12:40Ryan: through that film is like, we'll talk about the homeless and the
- 12:44surrounding of what the homeless means
- 12:46Kearns: Yeah.
- 12:46A big thinking.
- 12:47Ryan: how people forget about homeless people and disregard
- 12:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:52Ryan: the street, like without a care.
- 12:54Jon: Now, that said, I'm not sure she was homeless
- 12:58Ryan: no she
- 12:59Kearns: She wasn't,
- 12:59Jon: I've always believed that that's Bosch's wife.
- 13:04Kearns: Oh, he kills his wife.
- 13:05Jon: Because he, his wife, is one of the missing people.
- 13:08It's revealed in the movie.
- 13:10So I've always sort of assumed that that's who that character is.
- 13:15Ryan: If, um,
- 13:16Kearns: Yeah.
- 13:17Ryan: spoiler alert, ladies and gentlemen, that is his wife.
- 13:21Um, it does say it in one of the lines later in the film 'cause he
- 13:25Jon: Okay.
- 13:25Yeah.
- 13:26Ryan: moment and they, they find her head?
- 13:30I'm trying to remember if they do.
- 13:32yes,
- 13:33Kearns: in the box?
- 13:34Ryan: it was, it was actually right next to a pier in like a fishing net.
- 13:38So that's how he finds
- 13:40Kearns: Yeah.
- 13:40Ryan: and, that was his wife in the beginning.
- 13:43And it, it's a nice like, connection.
- 13:45It was nice a writer's, writer's connection in that
- 13:48Jon: Yeah.
- 13:50Kearns: So she gets pulled.
- 13:51I thought they were gonna go for an environmental thing with the
- 13:53street sweeper by the way that they were gonna do, like, you know,
- 13:56you're like, not the happening.
- 13:58That's the only movie that comes to mind right now that hits you
- 14:00over the head with its steam.
- 14:02it's like, oh yeah.
- 14:03It's like, um, it's, you know, this garbage thing.
- 14:07They need to, we need to clean up this world and we're gonna get shoulds.
- 14:10Now.
- 14:11more spot on with regard to the human
- 14:14to
- 14:15Um,
- 14:15Jon: I mean, it, it's a, an effective way to have her vanish without a trace.
- 14:20Ryan: Yes.
- 14:20Kearns: right.
- 14:21It was useful.
- 14:23I like how it, it swings in and we get Cooper,
- 14:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:26George Cooper.
- 14:27Kearns: George Cooper, who's the photographer, with his super
- 14:30hot girlfriend, who's also his model that he has to shoot.
- 14:34And Lauren and the Kim Christ, for those of you who are going to
- 14:40conventions, go to hers, get a signature.
- 14:42Ryan: from the train, man.
- 14:43Kearns: Yeah.
- 14:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:46Kearns: It's a movie I haven't thought of in a while.
- 14:48and yeah, so he's kind of a flippant character a little bit, and they're
- 14:55doing, uh, he's late on the sort of getting photographs of these
- 14:59two specific homeless people,
- 15:02he's gotta get those in.
- 15:04Because they need to do an expose on them or whatever.
- 15:07It's apparently of great importance for the newspaper.
- 15:10Jon: Yes.
- 15:11George is very unconcerned with deadlines
- 15:14Ryan: Yeah,
- 15:14Kearns: Yes.
- 15:15George
- 15:15Jon: or schedules for that matter.
- 15:17Like he's late on the pictures for the, the homeless story.
- 15:21He forgets that he's supposed to shoot a thing with Lauren that day.
- 15:26He's just a mess.
- 15:27He's just, he's kind of the strangest antagonist, uh, protagonist in
- 15:33one of these movies we've watched.
- 15:35Ryan: He's actually the bad
- 15:36Kearns: He's interesting 'cause he's not likable, but he is
- 15:38likable because he is not likable.
- 15:40Ryan: Yeah, he's like an.
- 15:42Kearns: this guy is like just kind of out there in the wind man
- 15:46just doing his thing.
- 15:48Jon: Y Yeah.
- 15:48And it's really strange because they really set him up like he's gonna be hero.
- 15:54And for most of the movie, he really doesn't have a clue what's going on.
- 15:58Ryan: no.
- 15:59Kearns: he's just there.
- 16:00he's not growing as a character either.
- 16:02He is just experiencing things.
- 16:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:05Kearns: it's like, do you think of the lines like the, um,
- 16:07some heroes are born heroes.
- 16:08Some heroes, uh, are, what is it?
- 16:11No, it's greatness.
- 16:13Some people are born great.
- 16:14Some people strive for greatness, and some people have greatness through rest upon
- 16:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:18Kearns: Cooper, Cooper had greatness shoved down his throat
- 16:22Jon: And he spit, he mostly spit it back out.
- 16:25Kearns: Yeah, exactly.
- 16:27Exactly.
- 16:28And it's, uh, it's good man.
- 16:30Uh, the, the cinematography of the movie is very eighties, very
- 16:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:34Kearns: very New York City as well, which is super cool,
- 16:37Ryan: it
- 16:37Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:38Ryan: it's the city, the whole darkness
- 16:40Kearns: right?
- 16:41Ryan: it just, especially with the sewer scenes, like if
- 16:45Kearns: I was gonna say, anybody who's seen the original Ninja Turtles movie
- 16:48knows what we're talking about right now.
- 16:49It's just dark camera work.
- 16:52Jon: Yeah.
- 16:52I mean, if you've seen an eighties New York movie, that's what you see.
- 16:57Ryan: Yes,
- 16:57Kearns: It's like they didn't bring extra lighting.
- 16:59kind of make it stay dark
- 17:01Jon: Yeah.
- 17:02Kearns: and not Tim Burton dark, not cute, dark.
- 17:04It's
- 17:05Jon: No.
- 17:05Yeah.
- 17:06Ryan: it's
- 17:06Jon: It's that.
- 17:07It's gritty.
- 17:09gritty.
- 17:10New eighties New York City before it got dignified.
- 17:15Kearns: Yep.
- 17:16You can smell this movie.
- 17:17Jon: Yes.
- 17:19Kearns: of the best
- 17:19Jon: if, if you grew up in the eighties, you know exactly
- 17:23what this movie smells like.
- 17:25Kearns: Anybody who's had to walk back to Grand Central, like at one in
- 17:28the morning in the city, knows what
- 17:30smells
- 17:31today, it's got that same
- 17:33Jon: yeah.
- 17:34Yep.
- 17:34Kearns: summer, New York City Street
- 17:36to it.
- 17:37Like when I'm watching it, I was like, man, this is like bringing back memories
- 17:41rambling back to this train station after seeing the Who or something
- 17:44Jon: Uh huh.
- 17:45Ryan: to catch the
- 17:46Kearns: God, now I feel older.
- 17:47Yep.
- 17:48And let, or you're sleeping there till 5:30 AM
- 17:52Ryan: that's when the Chuts
- 17:53Kearns: Yeah, it's,
- 17:56Jon: That's when Real Life Chds come out,
- 17:58Kearns: yep.
- 17:59Exactly.
- 18:00Jon: Lee.
- 18:02probably this movie, one of his movie's.
- 18:04Greatest contributions is just the word CHD as an insult.
- 18:08Kearns: it's so good.
- 18:10such a good word,
- 18:11Jon: anybody.
- 18:12It fits for anybody
- 18:14Ryan: Yeah, it.
- 18:15Kearns: Yeah.
- 18:16Jon: and anybody you're mad at can be a chd.
- 18:20Kearns: Damn
- 18:21Jon: It could be a description of how somebody looks.
- 18:25Kearns: It's not a scary word either.
- 18:26It's
- 18:26Jon: No, yeah.
- 18:28Kearns: which, which is an acronym for a very scary, it's very scary phrase.
- 18:33Jon: Two very scary phrases.
- 18:34Really?
- 18:35Kearns: yeah.
- 18:36True.
- 18:37True.
- 18:38So tell us a little bit about what's happening to these
- 18:40homeless people that are already, you know, living their dreams.
- 18:43Jon: Yeah.
- 18:43So you have a, basically a colony of homeless who are living in
- 18:47the tunnels under the city.
- 18:50I guess they're like access tunnels for sub the subway system and whatever.
- 18:54they've started to disappear, but really, um, oh, Reverend AJ is
- 18:58the only one that has noticed that the homeless are disappearing.
- 19:02He runs a soup kitchen and it's kind of implied that he's a
- 19:06little bit of a, a huckster maybe,
- 19:09Ryan: Yeah.
- 19:11Yeah.
- 19:11Jon: but he's right.
- 19:12Kearns: is a great word, by the way, an underused word.
- 19:16Jon: He's reported the missing and nobody's come to investigate,
- 19:19so he's really surprised when Captain Bosch shows up.
- 19:23Asking him questions about missing people, only to really, to then
- 19:29really kind of discover that Bosch isn't there asking about the
- 19:32homeless people so much as his wife,
- 19:35Ryan: Yeah.
- 19:36Jon: the homeless people come, sort of come to his awareness in that scene.
- 19:44Kearns: it.
- 19:45Ryan: because Daniel Stern's character, I mean, from what I remember,
- 19:49I believe it was 1212 missing.
- 19:52And then we have a really
- 19:53Jon: Yes.
- 19:53Ryan: where Bosch and, um, leads Bosch to one of the under, under dwellers.
- 20:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:02Ryan: And I don't know what he's reciting.
- 20:04I don't know if it was written for the script or if it's like
- 20:06actual English, like playwright.
- 20:08He's actually reciting, but he recites this, um, monologue and with the knife.
- 20:14It's just, it's really good cinematography, how they
- 20:16film it and everything.
- 20:18But it just
- 20:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:19Ryan: Bosch down that rabbit hole.
- 20:21Like literally as, um, the reverend
- 20:24Jon: Yeah.
- 20:24Ryan: entrance and they hear the chds in the background and they
- 20:28find the, the radioactive, um,
- 20:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:33Ryan: uh, the sync, I don't know what it's actually called, but the, the
- 20:36signal for radioactive, uh, no, like, uh,
- 20:39Jon: The, the Geiger counter.
- 20:41Ryan: there we go.
- 20:41Okay.
- 20:42And that was, that was a pretty cool, and it's just kind of like,
- 20:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:46Ryan: in this film is just, it links up
- 20:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:49Ryan: and it allows these characters, these actors, to flow with these
- 20:53characters very well as well.
- 20:55Jon: Yeah.
- 20:55Kearns: a tension super well too.
- 20:57The, uh, like the guy getting snatched from under the boxes and
- 21:00stuff earlier on, that stuff's like perfectly timed the way they do it,
- 21:05don't have fancy special effects to make it cool.
- 21:08just cool.
- 21:09Jon: Yeah.
- 21:11And I mean the, even before that scene, you get the scene of George going with.
- 21:15And the homeless woman, he bailed out after she stole a police officer's gun.
- 21:22he goes with the flora into the tunnels to see Victor and who's one of the people
- 21:29he had been supposed to photograph.
- 21:31And they find Victor in bad shape,
- 21:35Kearns: Yeah.
- 21:35Jon: uh, with, you know, sweating and definitely kind of paranoid.
- 21:42And then they reveal his leg and his leg is all torn apart by something which we
- 21:49know to be the chds that George doesn't.
- 21:52Kearns: Right.
- 21:54Ryan: That was cool.
- 21:54Special effects.
- 21:56Um, whoever designed the special effects on that, um, to actually take a look.
- 22:01You can see actually how they did it, how, um, it looked like the leg was
- 22:05caved in and the bone was popping out.
- 22:07It was pretty
- 22:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:08Ryan: for 1984.
- 22:11Jon: Yeah,
- 22:13Ryan: can't
- 22:13Jon: was a well done.
- 22:15Kearns: Body horror is so hit and miss during that decade too, so it's either
- 22:19can't be like, oh, okay, this is that kind of movie where you're like, Ugh,
- 22:23Ryan: Oh,
- 22:23Jon: Yeah.
- 22:25Kearns: really well done.
- 22:25Prosthetics.
- 22:26Ryan: I felt it.
- 22:27Right Where, whereas in the shin, he gets bit you can just
- 22:31Kearns: Yeah.
- 22:31Ryan: that white bone just like sticking out and it's like, ugh.
- 22:35Yeah.
- 22:35I'm like,
- 22:36Jon: Yeah,
- 22:37Kearns: It was gritty.
- 22:38Like I said, it was a good movie.
- 22:40I couldn't watch it with as much fidelity as I'd like to have.
- 22:42I watched, 35 minutes of it actually sitting down, staring at it and
- 22:45the rest of it during commuting.
- 22:48So it was like listening, glancing, listening, glancing.
- 22:50It's just the way it is in the life right now, boys.
- 22:53Jon: I,
- 22:54Kearns: but I was impressed by how good the movie is.
- 22:57Jon: so the special makeup editor was John CAG Leone Jr.
- 23:01Ryan: Okay.
- 23:02Kearns: Ooh, John Italian
- 23:04Got it.
- 23:05Ryan: was, he's amazing.
- 23:06I does it like, I feel like it's very, at that time I guess the
- 23:11hottest designer was Tom Sini.
- 23:14very, he's, he could have given him a run for his money.
- 23:18I don't know what other
- 23:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 23:19Ryan: he did, but,
- 23:21Jon: Savini, Greg Nicotero, guys like that.
- 23:24Yeah.
- 23:25Ryan: in that wheelhouse.
- 23:27Jon: Interestingly, guys who came from the Romero tree.
- 23:31Kearns: Oh boy.
- 23:33Ryan: Everyone comes from the
- 23:35Kearns: Oh boy.
- 23:36was gonna say,
- 23:37Ryan: craven tree, or the carpenter tree.
- 23:39Kearns: Yeah,
- 23:40all the ones that are worth something.
- 23:42Uh, actually no, there's a different, there's different era now.
- 23:45Jon: yeah.
- 23:47Kearns: we've got a few big upstarts going on now.
- 23:49Ryan: Yeah.
- 23:49We do
- 23:51Kearns: It's not even, uh, directors that people are following.
- 23:54It's, it's publishing houses like neon and stuff like that.
- 23:57And eight, what is it?
- 23:588 32
- 23:58Jon: A 24.
- 24:00Yeah.
- 24:00Kearns: 24.
- 24:01Jon: Blumhouse and.
- 24:03Kearns: Yep.
- 24:04It's like, oh, I wanna see the Blum House movie instead of gotta go see the
- 24:08flick.
- 24:08Jon: you 13?
- 24:10Kearns: Uh, no.
- 24:12Is that, is that a lot, is that rated R
- 24:16Jon: I think a lot of Blumhouse is PG 13 and kind of looks that way.
- 24:23Ryan: If you want,
- 24:24Jon: Feels that way.
- 24:25Ryan: you want good whore,
- 24:27Kearns: Interesting.
- 24:27Ryan: with like, I feel a 24 or neon.
- 24:30Kearns: Which one did Barbarian?
- 24:32was a 24
- 24:33Ryan: thought that was neon.
- 24:35Kearns: it neither?
- 24:36It might be now.
- 24:37Ryan: you,
- 24:37Jon: It might be neither.
- 24:38Ryan: if you guys know
- 24:40Kearns: it might be let,
- 24:40Ryan: if you listeners know, put it in the comments we'd like to know
- 24:44and also like sharing, subscribe.
- 24:49Kearns: um,
- 24:50Ryan: plug in there.
- 24:51Jon: Let's do what you did there.
- 24:52Kearns: I was gonna, I was gonna say it, but now I'm not going to tell us
- 24:58because I'm not looking at it right now.
- 25:00Ryan: We're gonna find out after
- 25:02Kearns: but I will say this, A 24 did pass on producing barbarian during
- 25:08pre-production, and Neon did too.
- 25:11So it's neither of those two, so I can't say that much.
- 25:15both passed on the movie.
- 25:17Ryan: move because that movie was really good.
- 25:19I, I like
- 25:20Kearns: Oh, cool.
- 25:21There's three studios.
- 25:23Maybe they can tell us more about those studios.
- 25:25'cause I haven't heard much about them, but, alright, so back to
- 25:30Jon: Back to sh.
- 25:31Kearns: So yeah, if you're looking for that vibe, that like original Batman
- 25:35sort of feel in when you're watching a movie, uh, a story that's not too
- 25:41serious, but more serious than a b horror movie and well flushed out.
- 25:45It's just a good watch, good hang.
- 25:47And I like the, culminating sort of, you know, issues and things like that, that
- 25:52they run into aware if you're watching it, like we watch movies, you're aware of the
- 25:56underpinning of like a theme of humanity
- 25:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:00Kearns: that these people aren't trash, these homeless people are people.
- 26:03Um, does Cooper ever come to that realization?
- 26:06Do you ever feel like Cooper ever cares about the homeless?
- 26:08Jon: I think he cares from the start, sort of like, maybe not as deeply as aj.
- 26:15Uh, I don't know that anybody, 'cause it's, it quickly is
- 26:19apparent that AJ is not.
- 26:22Running some kind of scam with his soup kitchen.
- 26:24Like this is something he's really invested in doing.
- 26:29Kearns: Yeah.
- 26:29Ryan: redemption arc. And I wanna say I agree.
- 26:32I do feel George has more of a heart for the homeless.
- 26:35'cause while he's doing the photo shoot, he leaves halfway to go
- 26:39bail out, um, the homeless woman.
- 26:43Jon: Yeah.
- 26:44Ryan: I, I feel like he, maybe he's grown more of a connection by
- 26:48taking photographs of them and like, just kind of feeling their pain.
- 26:52Like the idea of like, you're going to war, you take the photos of the
- 26:54war torn soldiers and you kinda.
- 26:57Embrace and feel what they're feeling.
- 27:00Jon: Yeah.
- 27:01a cynic would say he bailed her out because she can lead him
- 27:05to the photos he needs to take.
- 27:07Ryan: Touche.
- 27:08Touche.
- 27:08Cooper, you
- 27:09Jon: I,
- 27:09Ryan: of a bitch.
- 27:11Jon: I think he does have some level of empathy for the people he's photographing.
- 27:17Kearns: Yeah, I think you're right.
- 27:18and it comes through in some weird way that I can't identify in the movie
- 27:22because his character is so, like, nah, I really don't give a shit about anything.
- 27:26But you feel for some reason that he's into them, uh, less privileged in some
- 27:31way just be based on his actions and that, like, that's what he's focused
- 27:35So it's cool.
- 27:37Let's get into some of the cool deaths.
- 27:39I wanna hear some CHD murders.
- 27:41Jon: Oh man.
- 27:42Kearns: Let's see.
- 27:43Uh, we got the, we got the starting boxes.
- 27:46We got the wife and the doggy.
- 27:48We got, what's the next, uh, good CHD kill
- 27:51Ryan: it grandpa?
- 27:52I'm trying to remember if it's grandpa
- 27:54Kearns: is grandpa number three.
- 27:56Jon: Trying to remember number three too.
- 27:58Ryan: he number four?
- 28:02I I think
- 28:02Kearns: I don't know.
- 28:03Ryan: number three.
- 28:05Jon: I think grandpa's three also.
- 28:07Ryan: He, thought it
- 28:08Kearns: three.
- 28:10Ryan: 'cause even in the trailer it depicts that it's
- 28:13like father and daughter.
- 28:14It, it
- 28:15Jon: Yeah.
- 28:16Kearns: Yeah.
- 28:16Ryan: worse turn when you find out it's grandfather and granddaughter.
- 28:19And she watches it happen.
- 28:23She,
- 28:23Jon: yeah,
- 28:24Kearns: Sucks.
- 28:25Jon: That, and that's sort of,
- 28:28Kearns: memories.
- 28:29Jon: that's the death that shakes Bosch from going along with the police coverup
- 28:35Ryan: yes.
- 28:35Jon: what's going on.
- 28:37You know, that that's the one I, you know, maybe it's talking to the little
- 28:41girl, maybe it's the added to his wife and everything else, but that's when
- 28:46he's like, no, we're, I'm not covering this up anymore and I want a meeting.
- 28:51Ryan: Yep.
- 28:51And,
- 28:52Jon: want the commissioner,
- 28:53Ryan: and that leads to them
- 28:55Kearns: Get the K out.
- 28:56Ryan: what?
- 28:56Michael Chila, the
- 28:59Kearns: exactly.
- 29:00Jon: Michael Chi.
- 29:01Ryan: Chi.
- 29:03But that leads them to
- 29:05Kearns: make
- 29:05Ryan: uh,
- 29:07Kearns: the thing.
- 29:07Ryan: that they meet, uh, Wilson, who, that's like, I did not like his character.
- 29:13I couldn't wait for something bad to happen to him.
- 29:16Jon: Yeah.
- 29:16Ryan: regardless, he
- 29:17Kearns: Yeah.
- 29:18Ryan: the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
- 29:20He feels like a, a snobbish.
- 29:22He is a snobbish asshole, actually.
- 29:24And reveal all the proof.
- 29:28Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 29:29Ryan: um, Bosch, because they collected, I guess a shoe, a shoe went missing,
- 29:34from one of one of the teams who got, I guess, eaten by one of the chuts,
- 29:38uh, before the events of the movie.
- 29:40They have, the scanner as we were talking about, and I forgot what
- 29:44else they had, but it was all in this like makeshift paper bag.
- 29:48Wilson still debates with them
- 29:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 29:53Ryan: the fo the, the file that he's been disposing the Waste, which is
- 29:57also known as Contamination Hazard Urban Disposal, which is a shittier
- 30:05that, that's just a crappy name.
- 30:06We gotta go with the
- 30:07Jon: Yeah, I mean, listen, when when your project ends with urban disposal,
- 30:14you're probably doing the wrong thing.
- 30:16Kearns: Yeah,
- 30:17Jon: It's probably not where you should be disposing of anything.
- 30:20There's people there.
- 30:22Kearns: I mean, the premise of that is, is really dumb.
- 30:25'cause they don't, they would never, they would never put nuclear waste
- 30:29under, uh, in the sewers of New York
- 30:31Jon: No.
- 30:32Kearns: No.
- 30:33Jon: You confident about that?
- 30:36Kearns: Yeah,
- 30:37Jon: I don't know if I am.
- 30:38Ryan: going with on this one.
- 30:39I, I,
- 30:40Jon: I don't.
- 30:41I don't know that they wouldn't.
- 30:43Kearns: for Human Experiment?
- 30:45Yes, but don't believe that they bury it in, they bury it underground in, in
- 30:51remote rural locations and then allow it to seep into the groundwater out there.
- 30:54Jon: Well, if, if I'm not mistaken, this was just sort of like a, a
- 30:58transition point for the chemicals.
- 31:01Ryan: No, you're right.
- 31:02Kearns: Oh, I
- 31:02Jon: were, they were gonna go somewhere else and
- 31:05Ryan: They didn't get the right paperwork of, of course, plot point right
- 31:10Jon: Yeah.
- 31:11Ryan: so we couldn't move it legally.
- 31:13So we illegally held it underground
- 31:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 31:18Ryan: and then,
- 31:18Jon: Yeah.
- 31:18Wilson is the character who will give you just enough information
- 31:24he has to tell you more, he, it's still not gonna be every, and he
- 31:29does this, like every scene he's in.
- 31:30It's just, I'll give you this much,
- 31:34Ryan: that's so
- 31:34Jon: give you this much.
- 31:36Ryan: so great.
- 31:36'cause that's what makes you hate him.
- 31:38I don't think I've hated a character
- 31:39Jon: Yeah.
- 31:40Ryan: in a long while watching movies and I despised him, you
- 31:45Jon: he's very, everything about him is very easy to dislike.
- 31:50Like even the look like he's got that kind of like eighties
- 31:55villain schmuck look, you know,
- 32:01Kearns: a very different, like everybody listening who heard you say that should
- 32:04have that image in their head right now.
- 32:06Jon: it's the guy from, um, Ghostbusters, he's that same
- 32:10character, the one that Wegman calls Dickless, like, he's the same,
- 32:14Kearns: favorite.
- 32:15Jon: same, could be the same actor.
- 32:17It's not, but it could be.
- 32:18It's like that same character type.
- 32:21Ryan: worked out so great.
- 32:22'cause he was also in
- 32:23Kearns: The,
- 32:24Ryan: as the reporter.
- 32:25He gets his ass kicked by,
- 32:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 32:27Ryan: McLean's wife in that one.
- 32:30Jon: Yep.
- 32:30Kearns: yeah.
- 32:31True.
- 32:32The last iterations of that archetype of like that face, wearing the
- 32:36suit and all that is the, um, is the Happy Gilmore antagonist?
- 32:41No, not Happy Gilmore.
- 32:42Um, Billy Madison antagonist.
- 32:44that
- 32:45Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 32:45Mm-hmm.
- 32:46Kearns: Whether yeah.
- 32:47You guys see him, you're like, yep.
- 32:48Same dude.
- 32:49Jon: Yeah.
- 32:50Yeah.
- 32:50You know, three piece suit that's gray, you know, looks
- 32:55expensive, but probably isn't
- 32:59Kearns: Right?
- 32:59Jon: the smugness on the face, you know, even the hair type, you know, it's,
- 33:03Kearns: Yep.
- 33:05Ryan: the fall.
- 33:06Kearns: back.
- 33:06Sometimes like a little frayed and thinning.
- 33:10Douche.
- 33:12Yeah.
- 33:13your hair.
- 33:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 33:15Kearns: All right.
- 33:16what does CHD stand for?
- 33:17What's the cooler?
- 33:18Chd, I got that by CHD today.
- 33:21By the way, John, we didn't know.
- 33:24We didn't know.
- 33:24I got Shutted today.
- 33:26Jon: I didn't,
- 33:26Ryan: did
- 33:27Kearns: Should show.
- 33:28I don't know if it'll come.
- 33:28Oh, you can see it.
- 33:30You see it in my birthmark there?
- 33:32Ryan: got cannibalistic
- 33:33Jon: yeah.
- 33:33Kearns: through?
- 33:34Ryan: dweller syndrome now.
- 33:36Kearns: Yeah.
- 33:39I should mark.
- 33:40Jon: Yeah, we're gonna have to watch for your transformation.
- 33:43Kearns: I was thinking the same thing.
- 33:45I might use video three to make a video of it.
- 33:49Ryan: Just
- 33:49Kearns: Just have me forming,
- 33:52Ryan: which I
- 33:53Kearns: but
- 33:53Ryan: that was pretty cool 'cause I was thinking about that.
- 33:56Like, how do they get created?
- 33:58Is it because of the chemicals they got, they interacted with them, or is it
- 34:02through bite mark and it, a cool little transformation when you see Victor.
- 34:08Was it Victor?
- 34:09Jon: Victor?
- 34:10Ryan: All
- 34:10Jon: Yep.
- 34:11Ryan: Um, when
- 34:11Jon: I.
- 34:11Ryan: starts transforming later on in the movie, it was
- 34:15a pretty cool transformation.
- 34:16It reminded me of Universal werewolf, like the Wolf Man minus the hair, just
- 34:22like the face and like, um, very Wolf Man
- 34:25Kearns: yeah.
- 34:26Ryan: But that was, that was pretty cool.
- 34:28So like bite marks not like 28 days later where saliva or Juul
- 34:34or anything can turn 'em, it's just bite marks that can turn 'em.
- 34:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 34:39Kearns: What's interesting about it is I was like, okay, so this isn't a
- 34:42zombie, and how did they keep the CHD from falling into the zombie category
- 34:47though, because it isn't a zombie, and I know we all feel the same way.
- 34:50We didn't even have to talk about it ahead of
- 34:52But what makes a chd like a CHD is more like the things in descent
- 34:57like that.
- 34:58like, how is, and those are, they don't spread it through biting.
- 35:01They're just freakish, evolved weirdo things.
- 35:05Um, but CHUs are, CHUs get it from a bite, which is like, okay, it's
- 35:08a zombie or a vampire, but they're
- 35:11closer to a ghoul.
- 35:12Jon: there, yeah, there I would, I would almost put them goul and werewolf.
- 35:20Ryan: Yeah, I see that
- 35:21Jon: It's they.
- 35:23Kearns: A GRE wolf,
- 35:24Jon: Yeah.
- 35:24Yeah.
- 35:25Kearns: A quad,
- 35:27Jon: A wool,
- 35:29Kearns: a w, a wood.
- 35:30All right.
- 35:31They're just shut.
- 35:32But yeah.
- 35:33your finger on what keeps them out of that category?
- 35:37'cause it's totally not, they're totally nos zombies, obviously.
- 35:41Jon: because they're not, they're humanoid.
- 35:44After they're not
- 35:46Kearns: There it is.
- 35:47Jon: they become something different.
- 35:50Whereas for me, zombies are just dead people.
- 35:54Kearns: Okay.
- 35:56Fair enough.
- 35:57Oh, the just change is coming.
- 36:01Ryan: you are turning,
- 36:02Kearns: I'm glad you guys got that.
- 36:03Ryan: sir.
- 36:03Kearns: all right.
- 36:04So how do we beat these bastards?
- 36:06the climax.
- 36:07Jon: plan one is we're gonna send a team down.
- 36:10The NRC is gonna send a team down
- 36:13Ryan: Yep.
- 36:14Jon: to eliminate the Chds
- 36:17Ryan: off,
- 36:17Jon: Bosch.
- 36:18Ryan: their,
- 36:19Kearns: Which is the American one?
- 36:21Ryan: a camera.
- 36:22It just a
- 36:23Jon: Yeah,
- 36:24Ryan: camera.
- 36:25That's, that's their
- 36:26Jon: yeah.
- 36:27and Bosch takes it on himself, unbeknownst to Wilson, to send, his own team down
- 36:32there with them with flame throwers,
- 36:35Kearns: Ah, a little thing.
- 36:36Action.
- 36:37Okay.
- 36:37Jon: which, which you know, would seem like it would work, except it doesn't,
- 36:41Kearns: Why are they impervious to the flame throwers, John?
- 36:44Jon: I mean, they really don't even get a chance to use the flame thrower.
- 36:48Yeah.
- 36:49Kearns: That's why.
- 36:50Ryan: I thought they did.
- 36:52No.
- 36:52Jon: I mean it.
- 36:54Kearns: I think they spray
- 36:54Jon: It's bras like, but more of that like panic fire than
- 36:59Ryan: Okay.
- 37:00Jon: con controlled.
- 37:02Yeah.
- 37:02Ryan: I thought they were walking
- 37:04Kearns: Sight.
- 37:05Ryan: um, when, 'cause I thought they were shooting and they were walking
- 37:08through the flames showing that fire didn't affect them, which I.
- 37:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:13Ryan: Either way, it's, that's a nice little twist.
- 37:15So it shows them that they are somewhat indestructible,
- 37:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:21Kearns: they slimy?
- 37:22Ryan: they
- 37:22Jon: They look pretty slimy.
- 37:24Kearns: So if they're slimy, you get the salamander effects where they
- 37:27always say that salamanders are immune
- 37:28Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:29Kearns: which isn't true.
- 37:30You put a flame on a salamander long enough, it'll dry up
- 37:33the slime and it'll burn.
- 37:34But if you hit it with a, it'll just crawl away right after
- 37:39it has enough slime.
- 37:41So that could be it.
- 37:43Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:43Ryan: Okay.
- 37:44Kearns: why in Fahrenheit 4 51, the salamander is the, uh, is the symbol.
- 37:50Ryan: Such a good
- 37:51Kearns: The hearth and the salamander.
- 37:52Anyway, sorry.
- 37:55Moving on from being a nerd back to jus
- 37:57Ryan: not, not being a nerd man.
- 37:59Fahrenheit four 50 one's amazing.
- 38:01Kearns: we taught them all summer in a day in summer school.
- 38:03Uh, another Ray Bradbury story, and it, it landed so hard.
- 38:07I gotta give you that one.
- 38:08Ryan: it the one with the house?
- 38:11I.
- 38:11Kearns: That's a different one.
- 38:12That's my favorite Bradbury Short, uh, by far.
- 38:15Yeah.
- 38:15That one's, um, oh God, I can't remember the name.
- 38:18It comes soft res.
- 38:20Ryan: That's so
- 38:21Kearns: Um, that's the, the house af the automated house
- 38:24after the nuclear apocalypse.
- 38:26That's a cool one.
- 38:27Ryan: And the cartoon, the
- 38:28Kearns: But
- 38:29Ryan: is freaky.
- 38:30Just saying
- 38:31Kearns: yeah, that was like way too, way too hard for those kids.
- 38:35That was way too metal It reminded me of heavy metal actually.
- 38:40Ryan: same animation, but with these chds,
- 38:45Kearns: With, yeah.
- 38:45Back to CHUs.
- 38:47Ryan: plan, Wilson's plan is to basically gas them.
- 38:52Jon: Yep.
- 38:52Ryan: And at the same time, the reverend, he's on his own journey, right?
- 38:58He gets trapped by one of
- 39:01Kearns: Yeah.
- 39:02Ryan: underground
- 39:03Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 39:04Ryan: can get rid of basically the evidence in the reverend having this
- 39:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 39:09Yep.
- 39:09Ryan: Locking him underground basically.
- 39:11In his cellar.
- 39:12Yeah, his cellar basically.
- 39:14Jon: Yeah.
- 39:15His, the seller to the soup kitchen.
- 39:18Leads into the tunnels.
- 39:19Ryan: It's gotta be cool.
- 39:21Kearns: There you have it.
- 39:21Ryan: Trying to grab some macaroni
- 39:23Kearns: There's always a connection.
- 39:24So, yeah, I was gonna say, there's always a connecting
- 39:26tunnel or something like that.
- 39:29It's not like there are people that are living in tunnels under New York City,
- 39:32Jon: No,
- 39:33Ryan: North Chicago.
- 39:35Jon: no.
- 39:35Kearns: or is it, are we too, are we too far out of that, uh, story
- 39:38for people to get the reference?
- 39:40Ryan: no, I was just talking about that with Jada.
- 39:43Kearns: There were he people who were building who would build tunnels under
- 39:46synagogues, and so they could move around people were like, I hear people,
- 39:52uh, downstairs below my apartment.
- 39:53And the cops were like, you're an idiot.
- 39:55And there were, there were dudes down there.
- 39:57People down there.
- 39:59Under the, under the ground.
- 40:00Jon: Yep.
- 40:00Ryan: we were, uh.
- 40:02Kearns: Oh boy.
- 40:02Ryan: about how like there's like different paths.
- 40:04There's different like connected with the Underground Railroad and
- 40:08how there's also like abandoned train stations down there, subway stations and
- 40:13Kearns: I've been there.
- 40:14I've been to those.
- 40:16worked the subways of New York City, um, about three times in five week, rounds.
- 40:20And I've been to the under subway,
- 40:23like the, you know, the scene in Ghostbusters too.
- 40:27So what they saw, I didn't see, but I climbed down like an 80 foot ladder
- 40:31and it was super warm in winter
- 40:34down there.
- 40:36There was no pink goo, but it was the old, it was the old tunnels.
- 40:40Ryan: That's
- 40:41Kearns: Now, I don't know if they were using it for an aqueduct or
- 40:44a subway, 'cause I didn't see any tracks, but I was, I was like very
- 40:48far under the ground, under the city.
- 40:50And when we did the subways, I would see cool stuff all the time.
- 40:53There was one dude who built a house out of VHS tapes.
- 40:57like used them like bricks
- 40:59Ryan: Yes.
- 41:01Kearns: The tracks went through a switch and then a frog, like split like this.
- 41:04And in the middle was a triangle with two pillars.
- 41:07And he used those to brick up one wall and then bricked up
- 41:10another two on the other side.
- 41:12And he had this wedge shaped little
- 41:15Ryan: Yep.
- 41:15Kearns: and he was just chilling there.
- 41:16Ryan: That was from, uh, you mentioned it in episode three when we talked about, um,
- 41:21Kearns: I
- 41:23Ryan: the, the chicken eggs in a basket.
- 41:26Kearns: think he's in a basket.
- 41:27Oh, from V for
- 41:28Jon: Zoology.
- 41:30Ryan: So
- 41:30Kearns: Oh, okay.
- 41:31Ryan: out that episode, guys.
- 41:32You can hear more about that fortress
- 41:35Kearns: Zoology.
- 41:35Wow.
- 41:36You remembered the episode.
- 41:37I referenced that in,
- 41:38Ryan: listen, I'm,
- 41:40Kearns: that's wild dude.
- 41:42That's, well,
- 41:42Ryan: I'm like trying to be the Ed McMahon.
- 41:44I have a good memory.
- 41:45All right.
- 41:47Kearns: that's,
- 41:48Jon: You are gonna go to people's houses with fake checks.
- 41:52Kearns: Yeah.
- 41:53Ryan: Is, is
- 41:54Kearns: Won Publish his clearing house.
- 41:56Ryan: that we
- 41:56Jon: Hey, doc, yourself in the comments, we'll send Brian,
- 42:00uh, Ryan with a big fake check.
- 42:03Kearns: you go.
- 42:04Jon: we have our cast spread all over the place at this point too.
- 42:08Ryan: like pre
- 42:09Jon: We have.
- 42:11Yeah, we, we have George off on a quest to recover stolen photographs that
- 42:16he thinks this sleazy reporter took.
- 42:18Lauren's doing stuff in her apartment.
- 42:21AJ's trapped in the tunnels and Bosch is trying to resolve the Chds.
- 42:27Ryan: While arguing with Wilson the entire time.
- 42:30Jon: Yeah.
- 42:30Yeah.
- 42:32Kearns: And what happens next, guys?
- 42:34Ryan: Well, Cooper's reporter gets eaten by a chd, so Cooper
- 42:39Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 42:39Ryan: left alone and him and AJ Unite.
- 42:43At some point, Lauren, she gets attacked by a chd, a CHD
- 42:47crashes through her apartment.
- 42:49Poor woman's crying and asking for help and no one's helping her.
- 42:53And uh, I'm trying to Does do they?
- 42:57Kearns: Does she get eight or does she get outta that
- 42:59Jon: He escapes.
- 43:00Ryan: okay.
- 43:01Jon: neighbors are not so lucky.
- 43:03Ryan: Oh, hold
- 43:04Kearns: the old distract them with the neighbors.
- 43:06Got
- 43:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:07Ryan: so the Chd got the kid and the, the mom.
- 43:10Jon: I mean, he, it got into the apartment.
- 43:12There's no reason to believe that it didn't get the child and the mom
- 43:17Ryan: edge for that scene 'cause you see the doorknocking and I'm
- 43:19like, she's gonna open that door
- 43:21Jon: uhhuh.
- 43:21Ryan: going and you just keep seeing her
- 43:23Jon: Yep.
- 43:23Ryan: back and forth.
- 43:24It was really good suspense.
- 43:27Kearns: Yeah.
- 43:27Ryan: the door crashes through, game over, over.
- 43:33I thought
- 43:34Kearns: All right.
- 43:35We got some good sh chomp in action details.
- 43:39Let's hit, uh, what happened to John Goodman.
- 43:41John Goodman plays a cop that walks into a diner with some swagger,
- 43:46some,
- 43:47only, only the kind of swagger you can have.
- 43:50That's John Goodman
- 43:51Jon: Yeah, so this is the scene that sets up a sequel.
- 43:57You get a diner full of people, including police officer John Goodman,
- 44:02Kearns: Yeah.
- 44:03Jon: and we, we've come, we've seen what should be the end of the chds.
- 44:09They've been gased, they've been killed.
- 44:11Wilson's gone and the Chds are not really gone.
- 44:15They crash into the diner and
- 44:19they have a meal.
- 44:19Ryan: Oh yeah, they do.
- 44:20Kearns: Well, why can't we get the real CHD too with John Goodman?
- 44:25Ryan: Because he was,
- 44:26Kearns: Right?
- 44:26But he's like old.
- 44:27He's old Shd.
- 44:27Ryan: I was gonna make I'd, I'd rather see a sequel to Arachnophobia,
- 44:32sir. wanna see him dancing.
- 44:34Kearns: I mean, me too.
- 44:35Me too, for sure.
- 44:38But right,
- 44:39that's the end of
- 44:41Jon: Yeah.
- 44:41Kearns: one.
- 44:42There is a CHD two.
- 44:43We've already established that it's got nothing to do with CHD one chd,
- 44:46Ryan: No.
- 44:47Kearns: not CHD one, just chd.
- 44:48Jon: It's nowhere near as good either.
- 44:50It's,
- 44:51Kearns: And it really is a good movie.
- 44:52Jon: it's fun.
- 44:53CHD two is fun, but it's not good.
- 44:56Kearns: I mean, Chu Chu is a really good movie, but I
- 44:58Jon: CHD is amazing.
- 45:00Kearns: a very pleasant surprise.
- 45:01I was
- 45:02that type of eighties nostalgia.
- 45:05Um, with regard to like the filmmaking, with regard to how the
- 45:08movie's made, how people, I forgot how they used to tell a story.
- 45:11And I
- 45:12I like the pacing and how it resonates.
- 45:14This expense building, the little 15 second shots they take to
- 45:19make it, you know, do it with fidelity that's not here anymore.
- 45:24is sort of toed up and it's all too quick.
- 45:28quick, quick
- 45:29Jon: Yep.
- 45:29Kearns: changes.
- 45:30Jon: Yeah.
- 45:32Kearns: it was nice to go back to the old
- 45:34Jon: Yeah.
- 45:34Chd is Paste like an eighties movie.
- 45:37It doesn't need the action scene every five or 10 minutes to keep your attention.
- 45:44It.
- 45:45I mean, just that scene with the commissioner and Bosch and AJ and Wilson
- 45:52is, that's a good five to 10 minute scene.
- 45:56Ryan: And it keeps your attention 'cause it's just the
- 45:58Jon: Yeah.
- 45:59Ryan: it's also the actors and how
- 46:01Jon: Oh, it's absolutely the acting, that scene is so well acted.
- 46:05Ryan: And um, you guys might not know, um, I'm a big fan of Lois and Clark,
- 46:10uh, the New Adventures of Superman, Dean Kane, Terry Hatcher Clark,
- 46:14Ken's father is the chief, I think.
- 46:18So that was pretty cool to see him in something else.
- 46:21And it just
- 46:22Kearns: No.
- 46:22Okay.
- 46:23Ryan: he's got, 'cause he's a nice guy in the, the series.
- 46:26He's got an attitude.
- 46:27He's at.
- 46:28Jerk.
- 46:29And it was nice to see some of these, like Daniel Stern playing, like being
- 46:33very young and like his, one of his first roles and just kind of working
- 46:38like the redemption arc and just giving these actors challenges and to
- 46:43showcase their acting abilities in a Be Horror movie was pretty cool they, they
- 46:48Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 46:48Ryan: I feel like
- 46:49Kearns: Okay.
- 46:49Ryan: their heart into it.
- 46:51I mean, every movie we watch, they do.
- 46:53But this one, I feel it was different.
- 46:55It was a
- 46:56Jon: Yeah.
- 46:57Ryan: B movie with an a movie vibe.
- 47:00That makes sense.
- 47:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:03Kearns: feel bad calling it a B-movie at all.
- 47:05I really do think it's a step above,
- 47:06Jon: Yeah,
- 47:08Ryan: I,
- 47:09Kearns: like it's just,
- 47:10Jon: I mean, it, it's, it's really only b because of budget.
- 47:14Like
- 47:15Kearns: yeah.
- 47:15I.
- 47:15Jon: doesn't, it's not a big budget movie,
- 47:18Kearns: We've talked about many of those that are amazing films,
- 47:24Jon: and we have more on tap
- 47:25Ryan: Oh yeah, we
- 47:26Kearns: Yep, exactly.
- 47:28gotta be a million.
- 47:28Ryan: excited for next week's episode.
- 47:31All right.
- 47:33Kearns: Tell the listeners what that is so we can edit it out when we switch it up.
- 47:36Ryan: Oh, no, no.
- 47:37We're definitely going forward with Sleepaway Camp.
- 47:39It just fits with the
- 47:40Kearns: Yeah,
- 47:41Ryan: and Dons.
- 47:42Kearns: yeah.
- 47:44And uh, yeah,
- 47:45Jon: spoilers.
- 47:46Kearns: All right guys.
- 47:48Uh, yeah, we hold the dogs for you, but, um, all right guys, that was chu.
- 47:51Definitely give it a watch if you haven't already, but you totally
- 47:54should have before you listen to this,
- 47:55we're gonna get into our top fives.
- 47:58Jon: there's a really awesome set from Arrow for Chu a really, they did a really
- 48:03nice job with, I think it's getting a 4K later this year if it's not already out,
- 48:10but there's definitely a, a really nice Blu-ray version of it that's available.
- 48:14Ryan: will be added to my
- 48:15Kearns: Nice, and then
- 48:17it's pretty cheap on the streamers.
- 48:19Ryan: say, I paid 2 99 through Amazon.
- 48:21I rented it and it was the best 2 99 I've ever spent.
- 48:24I, will admit that.
- 48:27you were
- 48:28Kearns: You never got a bacon or ketchup, salt pepper back in?
- 48:31Oh, let's say 2 99, back in, I don't know, 1999
- 48:36would be around that price.
- 48:37Probably a little cheaper in 99.
- 48:38Actually.
- 48:39Ryan: a bacon, egg, and cheese recently, and it was delicious.
- 48:44not doxing us,
- 48:46Kearns: Better then.
- 48:47Ryan: I got it from because that would definitely dox us and I'm not doxing
- 48:51Kearns: Anyway.
- 48:52Ryan: anyway, so.
- 48:53Kearns: Let's do tops.
- 48:54Ryan: I went different with my top fives.
- 48:57I went trivial on this one and I went trivial because we talked about
- 49:02earlier, John Goodman, this is one of John Goodman's earliest roles.
- 49:06And I went on to like a research type deal of finding out certain actors
- 49:11that I have a lot of respect for who I didn't know were in horror films, who
- 49:15I didn't know were in horror films.
- 49:17And these were like basically their first roles.
- 49:20So I thought changing it up, do a little trivia, top five.
- 49:24And for number five, I'm
- 49:25Jon: All right.
- 49:25Ryan: with, in his second ever appearance in film.
- 49:29monkey Shines.
- 49:30That's Stephen Root.
- 49:32I dunno if you guys are familiar with Steven Root.
- 49:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:35Ryan: No.
- 49:36He, have you seen office space that you guys My stapler,
- 49:39Kearns: Yeah.
- 49:41Oh, that's him.
- 49:42Okay.
- 49:42Ryan: he's an amazing actor.
- 49:44His second appearance in any film was, um, monkey Shines, which we've
- 49:48mentioned before in the podcast.
- 49:51Um, basically follows a young athlete who becomes paralyzed quad quadriplegic
- 49:56and develops a bond with an intelligence service monkey named Ella who becomes
- 49:59homicidal after she's injected.
- 50:01When the experimental serum of human brain tissue.
- 50:07I know.
- 50:07Kearns: Sounds like a quality watch.
- 50:08Ryan: a fam it's a family movie that I definitely recommend on
- 50:11Christmas, along with Schindler's
- 50:13Kearns: Yeah.
- 50:14you go.
- 50:14Jon: Who directed that?
- 50:16Ryan: Uh, George A. Romero.
- 50:19Also the screenplay
- 50:21Jon: sir.
- 50:21Ryan: George A. Romero.
- 50:24Kearns: Nice.
- 50:25Jon: Yes, sir. You know, I'm not gonna let George a slip through.
- 50:28Ryan: John's gonna, you, you know what John, this is, I'm gonna like
- 50:31pull on your heartstrings tonight because my number four is the stuff
- 50:37it has from a second appearance.
- 50:41Patrick Dempsey, who you guys can check out in the new film, new horror
- 50:46film, somewhat Thanksgiving, which should be coming out with a sequel
- 50:49either this year or next year,
- 50:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 50:52Ryan: will be a part of too.
- 50:53But that was, uh, Patrick Dempsey's, uh, second film.
- 50:57And again, we've talked about this stuff I on our list this year too, maybe,
- 51:03Jon: he, uh, he was also, was he, was he Mc Steamy or McDreamy, or
- 51:11Ryan: I think.
- 51:11Kearns: on the on
- 51:13Jon: Grey's Anatomy,
- 51:14Ryan: Mc steamy,
- 51:15Jon: he?
- 51:15Ryan: MC steamy, MC steamy and McDreamy.
- 51:20Jon: I can't, I'm ashamed that I know those two names.
- 51:24Ryan: You know what, that was so much in pop culture.
- 51:26Kearns: I was gonna weigh in, but I, I decided against
- 51:29it just to keep my anonymity
- 51:31Ryan: how many seasons deep
- 51:32Jon: I've never.
- 51:33Kearns: Raz.
- 51:33That
- 51:35Jon: I've watched zero episodes.
- 51:37I just know that from all the hype.
- 51:40Kearns: Yeah, there was, there was plenty of that annoying shit going on back then.
- 51:44Ryan: TikTok?
- 51:44TikTok Bait?
- 51:45That's everywhere.
- 51:48Grey Anatomy episodes, clips, and I'm like, give me a break.
- 51:52I just want horror.
- 51:53And it leads me to number three and
- 51:56Kearns: You built that algorithm.
- 51:57Brick by brick Ryan.
- 52:00Brick by brick.
- 52:02Ryan: Uh, number three.
- 52:03Um, I'm going with Charlize Theron, is gonna be a shocker,
- 52:08Children of the Corn Three.
- 52:10Urban Harvest.
- 52:14Kearns: That is a shocker.
- 52:15Cool though.
- 52:16Ryan: one of the children, she's not one of the children of the Kerns,
- 52:20but the children of the Kern and
- 52:25Kearns: The Kern
- 52:26Ryan: of the Kerns.
- 52:27Uh, but children of the corn.
- 52:29Kearns: sounds like a South Park accent.
- 52:32Kern.
- 52:33All right, bye.
- 52:33Bad.
- 52:34So
- 52:34Ryan: same plot as the
- 52:35Kearns: she score any good?
- 52:36Kill
- 52:36Ryan: Um, it's been a long time since I've seen it.
- 52:40I think she was more in the
- 52:41Kearns: me too.
- 52:42Ryan: um, very young.
- 52:43No,
- 52:43Kearns: I.
- 52:43Ryan: say very young.
- 52:44Charlie sta maybe teenage years at that time, 95.
- 52:50same occurrence in like the last two films.
- 52:53These kids are walking behind the rows and killing people and running
- 53:00their life the way they want to.
- 53:01Just like Bon Jovi said.
- 53:03Now, number two, we don't have to explain it.
- 53:07We've set this many, I've mentioned this many of times on the podcast Nightmare
- 53:11on Elm Street, three Dream Warriors.
- 53:14It's my, one of my favorite nightmare movies, but it's
- 53:16Patricia Arquettes first film.
- 53:19It's the
- 53:20Kearns: Cool.
- 53:21That's a good one,
- 53:22Ryan: I know we've mentioned it before, but to think about
- 53:25this being her first film.
- 53:27She kills it.
- 53:28She might've done a lot of TV shows before then uh
- 53:33Jon: no, no.
- 53:33I'm thinking, I'm just thinking you might have a twofer on that one because
- 53:37isn't Lawrence Fishburne in that way before he was Larry Fishburne?
- 53:41Ryan: no.
- 53:41He is actually Larry Fishburne in this,
- 53:44Jon: Yeah, he's credited.
- 53:45He's credited as Larry in all his early stuff.
- 53:49Ryan: So
- 53:49Jon: He doesn't become Lawrence until Matrix era maybe.
- 53:55Ryan: Larry, I thought Lawrence Fishburn was a good, would've been a
- 53:58good nap, I thought, because Patricia Arquette, this was like her first role
- 54:02Jon: Yeah.
- 54:03Yeah.
- 54:04Kearns: In,
- 54:05in Apocalypse Now.
- 54:06Jon: Probably he was Larry A. Long, long time.
- 54:11Kearns: in in a movie with Brando, you think you'd have your stuff figured out.
- 54:15Jon: he was.
- 54:15He was Larry A. Long time.
- 54:18Ryan: did Brando call you?
- 54:19He just called me Larry.
- 54:21Kearns: Yeah.
- 54:23Lucky he called you.
- 54:24Anything.
- 54:25Jon: Yeah.
- 54:25Ryan: Duh.
- 54:27Kearns: Brando was that guy.
- 54:28All right.
- 54:29Back to Ryan, 'cause I'm dying.
- 54:30Let's get this top five wrapped up with a pretty bow.
- 54:33Ryan: end it.
- 54:34Um, because it's summertime, I'm gonna end my number one with a summertime film.
- 54:41I always feel it's the summertime, it's the summer of George every
- 54:44year being a Seinfeld fan, and number one is The Burning.
- 54:48Yeah.
- 54:49Jason Alexander.
- 54:51Um, this is I think his first or second film role he's ever started in, and
- 54:56he's got a full head of hair it just
- 54:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:00Ryan: he, again, puts his heart into it.
- 55:02Besides doing the, what was it?
- 55:04The Mick BLT commercials.
- 55:07He puts his heart into this.
- 55:08Jon: Mick?
- 55:08Yeah.
- 55:09Ryan: The, the MBLT was it called the Mick lt.
- 55:14Jon: GLTI wanna say.
- 55:16Ryan: It was just basically a quarter pounder with lettuce, tomato, and.
- 55:22Jon: one.
- 55:22That's another two for, 'cause that's early Holly Hunter.
- 55:25Ryan: Really.
- 55:26Okay.
- 55:26Kearns: Hunter.
- 55:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:28Ryan: All right.
- 55:29So I didn't even,
- 55:30Kearns: Great.
- 55:30Ryan: even know.
- 55:31But there's also, we're all talking about dongs all the time now.
- 55:36There's also a dong in this one.
- 55:39yeah.
- 55:40There is.
- 55:41Unexpectedly,
- 55:42Jon: mean,
- 55:42Ryan: it's unexpected.
- 55:43Jon: listen,
- 55:44Ryan: Yeah,
- 55:45Jon: listen,
- 55:45Ryan: was.
- 55:46Yeah.
- 55:47Jon: those,
- 55:47Kearns: Uh uh.
- 55:48Jon: Alexander shorts are, were a walking wardrobe malfunction.
- 55:53Those really early eighties, like
- 55:56Ryan: The light
- 55:57Jon: daisy dukes for men.
- 56:00Kearns: Yeah.
- 56:01Form fitting jorts.
- 56:03Ryan: George for
- 56:04Kearns: Oh boy.
- 56:05Oh boy.
- 56:06All right.
- 56:07Enough of that.
- 56:07John, what's your top five?
- 56:09Jon: All right.
- 56:10I went with movies.
- 56:14Ryan: Okay.
- 56:14Kearns: Oh,
- 56:16Jon: Uh, number five.
- 56:20have trapped alive.
- 56:22Kearns: Okay,
- 56:22Ryan: a good
- 56:23Jon: So in on,
- 56:25Kearns: so training.
- 56:26Jon: on Christmas night, a group of escaped prisoners take two
- 56:29women and a deputy hostage, find themselves trapped in a mineshaft.
- 56:35Unfortunately, for everyone involved, the prisoners are not the
- 56:39most dangerous thing in the mind.
- 56:42Ryan: good.
- 56:43I haven't seen that movie in years, to be
- 56:46Jon: The movie, this is so wonderfully, wonderfully bad.
- 56:50Ryan: You know what?
- 56:51know what came up real quick?
- 56:52Spooky.
- 56:53If you guys ever seen that from
- 56:55Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 56:56Ryan: Yeah,
- 56:58Jon: yep.
- 56:58Vinegar syndrome.
- 56:59Put that out maybe two years ago or so.
- 57:02Ryan: it's going on the list.
- 57:06Jon: Uh, so my number four is a movie I that kind of reminds me of chu not
- 57:13as good, surprisingly, but it's mimic.
- 57:17Kearns: Yeah, I agree that Mimick is not as good as Charlie.
- 57:20Uh, mimick is good, it's, it's Mimick fell flat in a few areas.
- 57:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 57:26Ryan: over?
- 57:26Mimic the
- 57:28Kearns: Yes, by
- 57:29the
- 57:30Jon: Yeah.
- 57:30Ryan: I'm thinking
- 57:30Jon: Yeah.
- 57:31Kearns: the book, the Relic as well.
- 57:34Jon: I, I like mimic, mimic Iss a good movie.
- 57:36It's, it's a lot chu though.
- 57:39It's, uh, so Dr. Dr. Susan Tyler, played by Mira Sorvino, has
- 57:45genetically created an insect to wipe out diseased cockroaches.
- 57:50Three years later, those insects have turned their attention to
- 57:54their only true predator humans.
- 57:58Now, now, Susan has to stop her own creation.
- 58:06Ryan: That's
- 58:06Kearns: one.
- 58:07Ryan: logline too.
- 58:10Kearns: Yeah, it was a good movie.
- 58:12really good, like two for movies like Romy and Michelle's High school
- 58:14reunion and I just go right into Mimic.
- 58:17It's good.
- 58:18Feel good Saturday night.
- 58:19Ryan: to watch like the mimic first and then have the feel good
- 58:22afterward or were you not feeling good
- 58:24Jon: No,
- 58:25Ryan: And
- 58:25Jon: no, you,
- 58:28you, you need mimic to wash away the taste of Romey and Michelle.
- 58:34Uh,
- 58:36Kearns: What's number three,
- 58:37Jon: number three is the Boogins.
- 58:41Kearns: The Bull Games.
- 58:41I've never
- 58:42Jon: Uh, I, I, I didn't know of this movie until, uh, probably eight years ago.
- 58:48I saw it at a, a movie festival.
- 58:50Um, so miners are working to reopen an old mine, but they've
- 58:56inadvertently released deadly creatures.
- 58:59Ryan: Okay.
- 59:01Jon: Even worse, the mine tunnels are connected by bootlegging tunnels that
- 59:06lead to all the houses in the town.
- 59:08Ryan: That's
- 59:09Kearns: Done.
- 59:11Jon: And the creatures run rampant through the town.
- 59:13It's also kind of chd like
- 59:16Ryan: Okay.
- 59:16Like,
- 59:17Jon: it's, it's, it's more of a, more of a rural kind of chd, but it's,
- 59:22it's has a very similar feeling also.
- 59:25Ryan: similar, I'm presuming, or
- 59:28Jon: Um, not so much, not so much, but the, the feel is very similar.
- 59:35Ryan: Sorry.
- 59:35I should say feel my bad.
- 59:37Like not looking, but like,
- 59:39Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 59:40Ryan: It's
- 59:40Jon: Yeah.
- 59:41It definitely, yeah.
- 59:43Yeah.
- 59:44You'll de if you watch, if you watch, you'll definitely be able to see
- 59:47the con the way it goes together.
- 59:51Kearns: Okay.
- 59:51Jon: Um, so my number two, I feel like I've maybe talked about before,
- 59:57but it's digging up the marrow.
- 59:59Kearns: Okay.
- 59:59Ryan: No.
- 1:00:01Jon: Um, it's directed by Adam Green who did the hatchet series.
- 1:00:06Um, and stars Ray wise, uh, and it's cameos with countless horror
- 1:00:13legends as all as themselves.
- 1:00:16Um, so Adam Green plays himself as a documentarian who's making a movie
- 1:00:22exploring Monster Art when he meets William Decker, who's very wise, um,
- 1:00:27who claims he has proof that monsters are real and he can find them.
- 1:00:32Ryan: Okay.
- 1:00:33Ray
- 1:00:34Jon: Spoiler, spoiler, he can,
- 1:00:37Ryan: Wise,
- 1:00:38Kearns: Okay,
- 1:00:39Ryan: Punisher.
- 1:00:41he the Punisher?
- 1:00:44Jon: no,
- 1:00:44Ryan: No, I'm getting mixed up
- 1:00:46Jon: um,
- 1:00:48Ryan: I'm,
- 1:00:48Jon: yeah,
- 1:00:51Ryan: I look him up after.
- 1:00:53Jon: yeah.
- 1:00:53You'll know him when you see him.
- 1:00:56And my number one, my number one we're underground.
- 1:01:03We've already mentioned him a couple of times tonight.
- 1:01:07It's George a Romero's Day of the Dead.
- 1:01:09Kearns: Of course it is.
- 1:01:12Ryan: You gotta have
- 1:01:12Jon: So if, if you haven't seen,
- 1:01:16Kearns: one
- 1:01:16Jon: if you haven't seen Day of the Dead, number one, what, what's wrong with you?
- 1:01:20But so with the World Overrun by the Walking Dead, a group of
- 1:01:25scientists and soldiers must attempt to coexist in an underground bunker.
- 1:01:30Tensions rise as soldiers die, and the scientists are no closer to a cure.
- 1:01:37The situation explodes when Captain Rhodes learns of the new
- 1:01:40direction of Dr. Logan's work.
- 1:01:46Bub.
- 1:01:47Kearns: If you wanna know about what that direction is, you better
- 1:01:50keep listening because we're definitely gonna do that movie.
- 1:01:52Jon: Oh yeah.
- 1:01:53Ryan: was my first,
- 1:01:54Kearns: probably gonna do like RO for a year.
- 1:01:57Ryan: that was my first George.
- 1:01:58A Romero film was Day of the Dead.
- 1:02:00It wasn't, it wasn't night, it wasn't Dawn.
- 1:02:03It was day on
- 1:02:04Kearns: Hmm.
- 1:02:06Ryan: Sci-fi channel and it just
- 1:02:11Kearns: That's why I miss those network, uh, networks because it, you did get
- 1:02:16exposed to stuff every once in a while.
- 1:02:17That would change you.
- 1:02:18Ryan: or IFC,
- 1:02:19Kearns: know,
- 1:02:21Jon: Yep.
- 1:02:21Kearns: was perfect for that too.
- 1:02:22I liked their, they used to have a great October lineup as well.
- 1:02:26Ryan: Samurai film at seven o'clock.
- 1:02:29Any, oh God,
- 1:02:32Kearns: and the crying game, just in case, you know.
- 1:02:35There it is.
- 1:02:36Dons.
- 1:02:37All
- 1:02:38That's how we're gonna end our CHD episode.
- 1:02:40We hope you enjoyed it.
- 1:02:41Definitely go see CHD if you haven't CHD before.
- 1:02:44Definitely CHD now.
- 1:02:45Ryan: a good one.
- 1:02:47Jon: See ya.
- 1:02:48Chds.
