- 0:02Welcome to Impact Ready, a show dedicated to helping you elevate
- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for.
- 0:18Impact Hi team, welcome to the show.
- 0:22Thanks for being here and listening.
- 0:24You know, recently I've been going through treatment for
- 0:28breast cancer. Many of you been following along
- 0:30and kind of know how that goes. But part of this has been
- 0:33getting infusions, chemotherapy infusions.
- 0:35And something that my wife has been doing for me as I go
- 0:38through these infusions is every time I'm there and I'm getting
- 0:43the chemo, she hands me this stack of cards, like handwritten
- 0:47cards from all kinds of people, from old clients, from old
- 0:51friends, from people in all different areas of my life.
- 0:54Some people I don't even know, and it's been a really cool
- 0:57experience, not only because it's awesome to have a
- 1:01handwritten card in front of you.
- 1:03I don't know if you guys do that for people, but it's awesome, by
- 1:06the way, to get handwritten cards.
- 1:08But what makes it so awesome is that people have started writing
- 1:14their stories and experiences that they've been through in
- 1:17these cards. Like they're sharing with me
- 1:19stuff that they've been through that's been really challenging
- 1:21or hard and describing what helped them and, or what was
- 1:26hard about it. And it's been really beautiful
- 1:30to read people's experiences. Some of these people I've never
- 1:34met and they're sharing with me these pieces of themselves that
- 1:37are, they're so important. It's so vulnerable, and I got to
- 1:41tell you, it is inspiring as hell to read people's stories
- 1:46and to just listen. Like it makes you feel less
- 1:49alone when you're going through something hard.
- 1:52To know that someone else has been through something not the
- 1:55same, but the same feelings, the same emotions, and just that act
- 2:00of kindness to share that story has been incredible.
- 2:04So anyway, every single infusion Leanne is handing me this stack
- 2:08of cards from people. There was one that I read last
- 2:12infusion that I had and it was from an old client of mine from
- 2:15when I was teaching spin and she was a die hard.
- 2:18She would come all the time. I she probably came to my class
- 2:21for eight years and she reminded me of something that I used to
- 2:26say in class. And I would often tell the class
- 2:30this phrase in the middle of a really hard part of the ride, or
- 2:34maybe it was a heavy hill or maybe a really fast long Sprint.
- 2:37If you're like a spin person, you get it.
- 2:39You're pushing your edge like you're just going really, really
- 2:42hard. And what I would say to them in
- 2:44that moment over the mic, music blasting room is dark drop is
- 2:49hitting. It's like the high energy
- 2:51moment. And I would tell them stronger
- 2:53in here. So you were stronger out there.
- 2:56And I don't know where I came up with that, but it became this
- 3:00catch phrase that I would say over the years.
- 3:02And it was something that I would say a lot.
- 3:05And I remember the sentiment of that phrase so well.
- 3:09It was all about me recognizing that in that moment, these
- 3:12clients were going through something that was pretty damn
- 3:14hard. They were pushing their physical
- 3:16limits, often times their their mental limits.
- 3:21Because if you've ever done a 62nd Sprint on a bike, that's
- 3:23really damn hard. But what I wanted to do was I
- 3:26wanted to convey to them that the work that they were putting
- 3:30in now on this bike, in this studio, in this song, in this
- 3:35dark room, this bike that goes nowhere.
- 3:38The work that they're putting in now would make them stronger in
- 3:41the end. It would help them summon up the
- 3:44strength for them to do things outside in the outer world.
- 3:47Because the studio is kind of this like isolated place, right?
- 3:52We're all here to work out. You go do your thing, and then
- 3:55you go out and you live your life.
- 3:56Everybody's sort of on their own different paths, but I was
- 4:00trying to create community within this space, letting them
- 4:03know like we are all in this together and the work that we're
- 4:06doing now is going to benefit each and every one of us when we
- 4:10go out into the world. In a lot of different ways,
- 4:13actually. Because when you are doing that
- 4:16kind of work, when you're pushing yourself to that limit,
- 4:18you develop a tolerance to extremity.
- 4:21It lets you explore the limits of your physical strength.
- 4:25It allows you to kind of push your boundaries and your mental
- 4:29edge a little bit. And I knew all this because I
- 4:33had experienced this myself in physical fitness, in classes.
- 4:38I had experienced that pushing yourself in that way allows you
- 4:43to figure out how strong you really are and to be practicing
- 4:47that every day is the work. You know, you often hear that
- 4:50phrase, this is what I trained for.
- 4:52And I think about that all the time because the work that we do
- 4:55in the dark, the work that we do when no one else can see, the
- 4:59work that we do to be stronger in a situation is the work that
- 5:04will allow us to be stronger out in the world, stronger in here.
- 5:08So we are stronger out there. And it still holds true when I
- 5:12think back on that statement, because the more that I examine
- 5:15what helps people be successful, the more that I look at what
- 5:20gets people to a level of high performance, the things that set
- 5:24them apart and get them unprecedented outcomes, the more
- 5:28I see there is a common thread of practicing hard things.
- 5:32People who thrive, people who create the life they want,
- 5:36people who find their own version of success in their
- 5:38life, they are all people who practice hard things.
- 5:43And there's a difference between consciously choosing to practice
- 5:47hard things and just simply reacting to hard things that
- 5:50life throws at you. To me, it's the difference
- 5:53between climbing into your own ship and charging through the
- 5:56waves of a storm or getting tossed around in the waves of
- 5:59life. When someone pursues challenge
- 6:02of their own accord, it's a totally different energy than
- 6:05somebody who's just responding to struggle or challenge that
- 6:09comes their way. It is a conscious choice.
- 6:13And that conscious choice is what makes all the difference
- 6:16because when you are consciously choosing it, you are empowered.
- 6:20It is you who is taking ownership and agency in your
- 6:24life versus somebody who is reacting to change, to struggle,
- 6:29to challenge. And they often feel
- 6:31disempowered. They can often feel like they
- 6:33are a victim to their circumstances.
- 6:35And those are two totally different energies.
- 6:39And that's what it's all about. Stronger in here.
- 6:40So you're stronger out there. This is a decision that we can
- 6:44make every single day. It's a decision that those spin
- 6:47clients made every time they stepped in that dark studio with
- 6:50me and started riding that bike and pushing their physical
- 6:53limitations. And it, you know, it doesn't
- 6:56always have to be a physical challenge, although that's such
- 6:58a great tangible example of what it feels like to get stronger.
- 7:02But it could be practicing standing up for yourself.
- 7:06It could be practicing having hard conversations when you have
- 7:09historically avoided conflict. It could be getting better at
- 7:13listening to your own intuition and your inner voice.
- 7:16Maybe it's practicing self restraint around spending money
- 7:19and creating a path to wealth for yourself.
- 7:21Maybe it's committing to doing deep work every day on that
- 7:24project in your business that will really make a difference.
- 7:28Whatever it is, it's you consciously choosing to do
- 7:32something hard to push your limits so that you can get
- 7:37stronger in multiple different ways.
- 7:39And that's really what it comes down to at the heart of it.
- 7:42It's about choosing to do the hard things on purpose.
- 7:46It's about building strength in all capacities, mentally,
- 7:50physically, emotionally, so that you can be stronger out in the
- 7:53world. You know, in the last six months
- 7:57of my life, I've been pushed mentally and physically beyond
- 8:00what I thought I would ever be pushed.
- 8:03And I've said to myself multiple times, this is what I trained
- 8:06for. I do.
- 8:07I say that. I say that to myself.
- 8:09I say that to my patients, to my clients, anybody who's checking
- 8:11in on me, I'm like, you know what?
- 8:12This is what I trained for stronger in here.
- 8:14So I'm stronger out there. And you know, I didn't know that
- 8:17I would be called to rise up in this way the way that I've had
- 8:20to this year. I didn't know that my workouts
- 8:23and my nutrition and my mindset were going to matter as much as
- 8:27they do now, but I'm so grateful that I can see the evidence of
- 8:32how this work pays off. You know, I've been training for
- 8:35years for this. I've been pushing my boundaries
- 8:39and my limitations on purpose, getting very uncomfortable
- 8:42trying to increase my tolerance for extremity even without
- 8:46realizing what I was going to use it for.
- 8:48But I can guarantee you this life will give you something to
- 8:51use it for. You know that too.
- 8:54You've had situations in your life that came out of nowhere
- 8:56where you were like, oh God damn.
- 8:58I am glad that I was prepared for this.
- 9:00I'm glad I trained for this. And that's exactly what everyone
- 9:04says. You never know what's coming at
- 9:06you. You never know what life is
- 9:08going to hand you or what experiences you're going to have
- 9:11to face. It's both the unnerving part of
- 9:14life and also the beautiful part of life, and we know this to be
- 9:18true. But we so.
- 9:18Often take for granted things like our health or our
- 9:21relationships or safety and security right up until that
- 9:25moment with when something changes and we are forced to
- 9:29stare into the face of uncertainty.
- 9:31But the truth is, we grow, we learn, we expand, we involve, we
- 9:37get stronger through friction. Friction and resistance and
- 9:43struggle, that is what helps us grow.
- 9:45And when we can consciously choose it, that's a very
- 9:48different energy. When we can have systems and
- 9:52routines in place that allow us to test it and practice that
- 9:56friction and build our tolerance to it, it is a totally different
- 10:01energy. And I see the value of training
- 10:03for these things more than I ever have before.
- 10:07So my challenge to you this week is to think about what is your
- 10:10practice, What is your daily practice of stronger in here?
- 10:15So I'm stronger out there. I know that you have things that
- 10:18you're training for in your life as well.
- 10:20And so I'm asking you to rise up today.
- 10:22I'm asking you to find your method of building strength and
- 10:27increasing your capacity in whatever way feels right to you.
- 10:31But I guarantee is going to pay off and you will be so thankful
- 10:34that you did. No matter what comes your way,
- 10:37you will have the ability to navigate it.
- 10:39You will have the ability to overcome it and that's one of
- 10:42the beautiful parts of this. And I'm going to be here
- 10:44cheering you on. I know that everybody needs a
- 10:46coach. I know everybody needs a trainer
- 10:49up there at the front of the room cheering them on, telling
- 10:51them that they are strong. And I promise I will be that
- 10:54person for you. As you are navigating this
- 10:56stuff. Let's just focus on building
- 10:58that practice and putting in those reps so you can truly feel
- 11:01like the strongest version of yourself when the time matters.
- 11:04So that's all for today. Thank you for listening, for
- 11:06putting in the reps, listening to this podcast.
- 11:09Stronger in here. So you are stronger out there
- 11:12for sure. And as always, team, thank you
- 11:14for being ready to impact. Thanks for listening to Impact.
- 11:18Ready, I hope. Today's episode inspired you to
- 11:21own your impact and recognize that you.
- 11:23Are powerful. By elevating our energy and
- 11:26awareness, we can create exponential change in this life.
