- 2:49Ladies and gentlemen, it's been a crazy, crazy week.
- 2:52Today marks another day where I went to doctors.
- 2:56I am absolutely one of those guys that don't like going to
- 3:00doctors, seeing dentists. And today I was actually jumping
- 3:05from one doctor to another. Last night we had a meeting and
- 3:08I couldn't make the meeting because I wasn't feeling good,
- 3:11starting to spit up phlegm. And I know anybody understands
- 3:15when you getting sick, you think that you have, you know, I don't
- 3:19know, you have a cold, you have the flu, you have COVID.
- 3:22Well, last night I don't know what was wrong with me.
- 3:24So I dozed off. I went to sleep.
- 3:26I winded up waking up at 10:45 PM and I was coughing up green
- 3:32crap and I didn't know what it was.
- 3:34So I was up all hours of the night doing everything to try.
- 3:38I, I mean, how many people have told me to drink peroxide or,
- 3:42you know, gargle peroxide because your throat's hurting
- 3:45you or do other things, drink lemon juice or anything?
- 3:49I, I was trying everything, calling friends, my girlfriend's
- 3:53a nurse, so I was asking her what should I do?
- 3:57Try to feel better. So I, I woke up this morning, I
- 4:00went to a doctor and then I went to a dentist to measure a crown
- 4:05because I am trying to, you know, my teeth, I have very nice
- 4:08teeth. I take good care of it, But over
- 4:11the last couple of years I've all I've had problems with it
- 4:14when it comes to cavities and, and making sure that none of my
- 4:18crowns would break. So today I was measured for
- 4:21another crown and I the one thing I don't know if anybody
- 4:24knows this, I'm allergic to novocaine so I cannot have
- 4:29novocaine. So I, I don't do sleeping gas or
- 4:33whatever the hell they do. So what they do usually I went
- 4:36to a new dentist today because I have a new insurance company.
- 4:38So I, she was like amazed that I wouldn't take anything.
- 4:43And she was like, what, what do you want to do?
- 4:45And I, I was like, do you have any straps?
- 4:47Because they usually strap me to a chair.
- 4:49My old dentist strap me to a chair because I do it naturally.
- 4:53So they didn't have any straps. She thought I was crazy, like I
- 4:56was in like in a scene asylum. And I said, just drill it.
- 5:00And she's like, Are you sure? And I was like, yeah, drill,
- 5:02drill my drill, drill the the cavity out or whatever the hell
- 5:05you doing so we can measure for a crown.
- 5:08So she was doing it and she's like, you OK?
- 5:09You OK? But I, I don't know if anybody
- 5:12knows this. If you've never used Novocaine
- 5:14or you never used any of that stuff, eventually your gums go
- 5:17numb because it, it's, it's so painful.
- 5:20Your whole body, it starts to, I, I mean, you start to sweat
- 5:25all this stuff because of pain. So my body is so used to it and
- 5:31she's like just absolutely amazed.
- 5:33So she kept stopping. She's like, you OK?
- 5:34You OK? I was like, yeah, just get the
- 5:36whole, get the thing out of my mouth.
- 5:38So she drilled it and she measured it.
- 5:40And at the end of my, my time over there with the dentist, she
- 5:43was like, I, I've never seen that before.
- 5:46I've never been in a patient. The last time I've seen this was
- 5:50my parents when I was in like the 1970s because they didn't
- 5:54really have all the stuff that they have now.
- 5:56She's like, I've never seen anybody have, you know, do
- 5:59cavities or even root canals. What do you do with root canals?
- 6:02I said, I, I've had two root canals one time and, and the
- 6:06last root canal I had, they didn't, they didn't give me any
- 6:10novocaine because I'm allergic to it.
- 6:11I'm definitely allergic to novocaine.
- 6:13Like my face blows up. I'd be rushed to a hospital.
- 6:16I would need an EpiPen for Novocaine.
- 6:18So they have all different things they have like sleeping
- 6:21gas or laughing gas or whatever the hell they do, but they, this
- 6:24particular dentist didn't have it.
- 6:26So I was like, just just do it. And she was like, after the, I
- 6:30told Brittany, because Brittany after I got back to the, you
- 6:33know, got back home and she, I was here collecting all my
- 6:36laundry. She was like, well, what did
- 6:38they do? I said they were drilling out my
- 6:40mouth and shaping up for the crown.
- 6:42She's like, are they, did they give you anything?
- 6:44I said, you know, I'm allergic to novocaine.
- 6:46So she's like, what did they do? I said, they just drilled it out
- 6:48of my mouth. So my mouth went numb and my
- 6:51mouth is starting to just come back and I'm starting to feel
- 6:55that I'm in pain. So I just want to let everybody
- 6:58know I'm here doing the show, but it's I am definitely in pain
- 7:02right now dealing with all the different vibrations on one side
- 7:06of the mouth and the other. So sweetie, I have you ever gone
- 7:10into a dentist and ever have that done to you?
- 7:13I mean, obviously. Not without ovocating.
- 7:14Not without ovocating. I had my wisdom teeth pulled
- 7:16when I was in college. Actually my my wisdom teeth came
- 7:20up so I didn't have to worry about.
- 7:21That Oh, wow. OK, Yeah.
- 7:22So all four of them actually popped out when I was like 1819
- 7:26years. Yeah, I, I, I think it was after
- 7:28my freshman year in college, I had it pulled with, with the
- 7:31Novocaine. I remember I was like 3 days.
- 7:33I felt very like twisted in my mouth a lot of the time.
- 7:36And then I attempted to front on that Friday, I somehow was able
- 7:41to broadcast a soccer game that my college network was
- 7:44broadcasting. And I I toughed through it, but
- 7:46I definitely was still feeling some of the effects of it.
- 7:48She was like absolutely amazed. Even the nurse that was there or
- 7:52the medical assistant that was, you know, holding my hand, she
- 7:55was like, I have never seen that before.
- 7:57I've never seen somebody not take novocaine, not take
- 8:00anything and deal with the pain that you're probably dealing
- 8:03with. And I'm like, after you get used
- 8:05to it, I start, I realized that I was allergic to Novocaine when
- 8:08I was like 22 years old. So, and I, I remember I was
- 8:12rushed to the hospital because my mom, they all of a face, all
- 8:15of a sudden my face like blew up like literally my lip blew up
- 8:20massively. So I was rushed to the hospital
- 8:23and they, they told me that I'm allergic to novocaine and thank
- 8:26God you were rushed to the hospital.
- 8:28You could be deadly, you know, deathly allergic to it.
- 8:32So I, I, so they gave me, I now I always carry around, I don't
- 8:36know if anybody does this. I carry around an EpiPen because
- 8:41if anything happens, I touch novocaine.
- 8:43I can definitely be allergic to it.
- 8:46So that's the only thing I'm really that I know that I'm
- 8:49allergic to that and certain grass because I've had the I
- 8:52went to the allergy doctor and and they tested me for all those
- 8:56different things. But novocaine is like the one
- 8:59thing that I'm deathly allergic to.
- 9:00My friend Mike, he's allergic to strawberries.
- 9:03If he touches a strawberry, he could he could, he could die
- 9:07from. My uncle's the same way, he's
- 9:08allergic like 4 different fruits for strawberries, blueberries, I
- 9:11think it's Peaches and pineapple.
- 9:12It's crazy. It's absolutely crazy.
- 9:14I didn't believe it until my face blew up.
- 9:18So I'm always worried. I always tell her, you know,
- 9:20make sure there's no novocaine around me.
- 9:22I don't want to be, I don't want to be rushed to the hospital,
- 9:25but that's why in my in my car, I actually carry an EpiPen.
- 9:29So because I don't know, I mean, who carries around novocaine?
- 9:33I mean, what are the chances you bumping into novocaine?
- 9:36But anything's possible. So I'm always careful when I go
- 9:40to a dentist. This story has been beating on
- 9:44the surface. I mean absolutely beating on the
- 9:47surface. Tony Clark resigns as the head
- 9:52of the MLB Players Association. ESP.
- 9:55NS Jeff Passan reports that the head of the MLB Players
- 9:58Association, Tony Clark, has stepped down from his position
- 10:02after an investigation uncovering and inappropriate
- 10:07sexual relationship with his sister-in-law who was a union
- 10:12employee working with Clark in the Arizona offices.
- 10:16Clark's wife's sister, Francis Clark, yes, was the only
- 10:21employee employee outside of Clark that had access to the
- 10:26special. I'm sorry to the specially made
- 10:30league office Clark had built for himself.
- 10:34The inappropriate relationship was uncovered in an ongoing
- 10:38federal investigation by the Eastern District of New York,
- 10:42which apparently started in 2023, the same year the
- 10:47sister-in-law was hired by the union.
- 10:51The Athletic reports that Deputy Executive Director Bruce Meyer,
- 10:56who has been with the MLB since 2022, was the unanimous voted
- 11:01and was unanimously voted as the interim executive director of
- 11:07the MLBPA. The MLBPA voting subcommittee
- 11:11included veteran pitcher Chris Bassett and the best pitcher in
- 11:16the game, Tarik Scubal. Scubal has said he believes that
- 11:20the MLBPA is stronger than ever and believes that Meyer can do
- 11:25just as well, if not better than Clark in contract negotiations.
- 11:31The biggest issues in the CBA seem to revolve around the
- 11:37deferred Dodgers adding Kyle Tucker this offseason, leading
- 11:40to calls for salary cap from owners.
- 11:44The current CBA expires December 1st and the MLBPA says they want
- 11:50to do everything they can to not, I mean not have any games
- 11:56cancelled in 2027 and the season.
- 12:00I will say this, I don't know much about this story besides
- 12:03what has been posted all over social media.
- 12:06It's been a laughing stock, an absolute laughing stock.
- 12:09And it's something that really, But first of all, that beer that
- 12:11Tony Clark has, it's got to go. It's absolutely got to go.
- 12:15It's ugly, ugly as sin. He looks like Santa Claus, you
- 12:19know, lost his best friend. I don't know, he actually looks
- 12:22like an elf, like Santa's elf. Nevertheless, you think about
- 12:28this story and, and there's a lot of scandals, a lot of
- 12:30scandals of power, a lot of these big name owners.
- 12:34How many times have we seen stories from billionaire guys
- 12:39get caught with cheating on their wives or cheating on their
- 12:43their best friends, sisters, girlfriend, I mean everything.
- 12:46And we've heard so many stories over the years where people use
- 12:50their power to get what they want.
- 12:52Tony Clark has been the voice of the players for many, many
- 12:58years. And you think about the story
- 13:01and, and the backlash that this is going to collect, not only
- 13:05from the league as it's, you know, as a whole.
- 13:07But when you try to compare all the leagues, the NBA, the NHL
- 13:12and the NFL and all the scandals that have happened over the
- 13:14years, this is a scandal that you would be shocked about.
- 13:18Because think about it. Tony Clark ran the MLBPA.
- 13:23He built the Arizona office. He hired his sister.
- 13:27I'm sorry, His wife's sister, right?
- 13:29Am I right? It's his wife's sister.
- 13:33Just to sleep with her. I mean, think about it.
- 13:36Why did he hire her? I mean, she's making $100,000 a
- 13:39year. That's good money.
- 13:40I mean, what is she doing? Probably nothing.
- 13:42What do you need to do at the MLBPAI mean besides negotiate
- 13:46contracts? What is she making?
- 13:49Making phone calls and answering him.
- 13:51She's making 100K, so automatically that would be
- 13:54fishy. But the fact, the fact here is
- 13:58you look at the MLB and the strike, which could happen at
- 14:04the end of this year, there's no negotiations.
- 14:07And they wanted to start negotiations September 1st.
- 14:11That's what I've heard. And now you bring in Meyer.
- 14:15Now I know Tarek Schuble came out and he says that it might be
- 14:18in a better position than it ever was with Tony Clark, and
- 14:20that's great. Tarek comes out, he speaks for
- 14:22the players. That's great to hear, but there
- 14:26are more things going on in the MLB that meets the eye.
- 14:30Think about it, when everything that's happened, the betting
- 14:33scandal, the Ohtani scandals we have seen and it's happened
- 14:38strategically over the last three seasons.
- 14:41And now you you talk about the deferred Dodgers, which
- 14:45everybody is talking about and speaking about, and the fact
- 14:48that the Dodgers have won back-to-back championships.
- 14:51They've won three out of the last 6.
- 14:54They've dominated baseball. Why?
- 14:56Because they figured out a way to manipulate the salaries and
- 15:01the salary cap with deferred money.
- 15:03No, deferred money's been around forever, but now the league and
- 15:08owners need to look at this as a problem for baseball because
- 15:13nobody wants to see one team dominate every single year
- 15:16because they're buying players and getting the players to
- 15:19agree. Hey, you know what, We're going
- 15:20to bring you on with a signing bonus of 60 million, but we're
- 15:24not going to pay you for 12 years or we're going to pay you
- 15:26minimum amount of money because we're all about winning
- 15:29championships. And Tony Clark was set up in a
- 15:34position where he was going to be the face of this
- 15:37negotiations. One of the more important times
- 15:41for baseball to hit it out of the park.
- 15:43Think about it, Literally hit it out of the park because baseball
- 15:47has been growing. The WBC is around the corner.
- 15:50This could take baseball to another level.
- 15:52All the stars want to play in the WBAWBC right now.
- 15:56Think about it. Aaron Judge has never been,
- 15:58never played for Team USA, Never.
- 16:01Not, not in his time here in the major leagues.
- 16:04You think about all the players that have agreed to play in the
- 16:07WBC because they they want to play for their stars and
- 16:10stripes. They want to play for their
- 16:12Puerto Rican flag. They want to play for, you know,
- 16:14the Mexican flag, their colors. And it's not like that anymore
- 16:21because baseball, with all the money these players are being
- 16:24divided out to, there is no salary cap.
- 16:27This is the only sport out of the four major sports that
- 16:30doesn't really have a salary cap.
- 16:34And I believe it's been a problem forever.
- 16:36We, we, me and Jabba, off air, have argued this over and over
- 16:40and over again. Finally, Jabba has agreed with
- 16:43me that something needs to be done with the Dodgers.
- 16:45Now, he never said that the baseball's going to need or
- 16:48should push for a salary cap, but even if they negotiate
- 16:52something with the deferred money, there has to be some kind
- 16:55of cap to the salary. And then you, you talk about
- 16:59Clark in this scandal and how it affects the negotiations, while
- 17:03it affects it enormously, because if you look at Meyer,
- 17:08Meyer has not been in these conversations.
- 17:11It's been all Tony Clark. Now you're bringing another
- 17:14front guy, an interim guy. He might not be the guy in the
- 17:17future, but he's there now where he has the player's ear and
- 17:22unanimously he has every single player of the MLBPA behind him.
- 17:28And you wonder if he's put in this position to fail because
- 17:34baseball, especially the owners, are in the driver's seat.
- 17:39They know that they, they smell blood and they know that the
- 17:43situation that the MLB players are going to be in in the
- 17:46offseason is either you negotiate a deal that's fair to
- 17:50the owners and fair to the league as a whole, or we're
- 17:53going to go strike and, and the players are going to be pushing
- 17:58for it. Why?
- 17:59Because hey, you know what, if we're, we're in the driver's
- 18:02seat and we're pushing for this, the owners are going to try to
- 18:04push this forward. When the owners are multi
- 18:06billionaires. Do you think the owners give a
- 18:09crap if they're set out 5060 games this season, next season
- 18:13where they're going to get what they want, where there is some
- 18:15kind of cap, where the players aren't going to be making
- 18:18seventy, $80 million a year, 100%.
- 18:22And Tony Clark was the middle man.
- 18:24He was the guy that was going to be the driver in this, you know,
- 18:28on this bus. And now the bus is completely
- 18:32crashed with his sister-in-law, literally crashed with his
- 18:37sister-in-law. I know everybody makes jokes and
- 18:39there's memes out there that it's going to be really awkward.
- 18:43Thanksgiving and Christmas, great.
- 18:45I I could give a crap about the Clark family and how they get
- 18:48along with one another inside and out of their house.
- 18:51Who's sleeping with whose wife? I mean, this is a soap opera.
- 18:55The fact here is how does this affect the MOB and negotiations
- 19:01when December 1st comes around and it's going to come around
- 19:03quick. It always does.
- 19:05Baseball is going to go quick. We're going to have a new
- 19:08champion at the probably before December.
- 19:12And then we're going to be wondering, where does baseball
- 19:16go? Do they go into 2027?
- 19:19Like what was it 9596 when they went on strike where they missed
- 19:23practically every every part of the season?
- 19:25Or did they come to a negotiation where it makes sense
- 19:29for the owners and it makes sense for the players?
- 19:31And you know, the players are not going to agree to a salary
- 19:34cap. They're just not, absolutely
- 19:36not. So how does this work when you
- 19:39have a new guy in office and he doesn't know where these
- 19:44negotiate conversation, negotiating conversations have
- 19:47gone over the last, I don't know, 62 weeks, seven months
- 19:53because he wasn't in that room. He wasn't in those
- 19:55conversations. He knows about them.
- 19:57The players now have voted him in to put him in that position
- 20:01to figure out how he can negotiate these deals.
- 20:04But negotiations when it comes to multi billion dollar deals
- 20:08are not going to be easy to make.
- 20:10And and again, going back to the Dodgers, the Dodgers have really
- 20:13spun the wheel their way. And everybody's going to say,
- 20:17like Jabba has said over the last couple of months, he says,
- 20:20well, every team can do what the Dodgers did.
- 20:22Not necessarily. When you bring in players like
- 20:27Friedman or Betts or Otani, they got to believe that at the time
- 20:32when they're sitting with negotiations, they got to
- 20:35believe that this team is built good enough to run away with the
- 20:39championship. Now at the in the beginning, the
- 20:42Dodgers had to negotiate deals with Mookie Betts and Friedman.
- 20:45They gave him a a thought or they they set up a platter and
- 20:49they had to believe that they were going to finish that food.
- 20:52That food was edible enough to finish the season, to finish
- 20:56everything off, to win championships.
- 20:59Now you think about it and you look at the Tucker deal, it
- 21:03works for Tucker. It doesn't work for the league
- 21:05Tucker signed. What was it, a 4-5 year deal?
- 21:08Four years on 200 and 6200 and 40 million.
- 21:11Dollars which you can opt out after the second year.
- 21:13So he's getting money up front so he's happy and no matter
- 21:18what, if it doesn't work out with the Dodgers, he's in the
- 21:20driver's seat 2 years from now where he can opt out and make
- 21:23even more money. So to me, the players are and
- 21:28that's why the owners are really forcing their hand on this.
- 21:32They're going to force their hand on it because they have no
- 21:35control right now. It's the players that have all
- 21:38the control because of all the money they're going to be
- 21:41bringing in when these contracts, contracts up to
- 21:44fruition. Think about it.
- 21:45If you're a superstar or even a partial superstar in the league,
- 21:48let's say you're the 5th best player on that roster.
- 21:52Now you're making those fifth players on that roster are
- 21:55making no less than 30 or 32,000,000 a year and the best
- 22:00players are making 40 or 50 million a year and it's not
- 22:06sustainable anymore. And the owners are looking at
- 22:08that. So now you have guys like Tony,
- 22:10Tony, Tony Clark who's been out there, he's been in front, he's
- 22:15been on the front line speaking for the the players and and
- 22:18trying to figure out how this is going to work in negotiations in
- 22:222000, at the end of 2026, going into the 2027 season.
- 22:27And you wonder after this scandal, are the owners in the
- 22:32driver's seat because now the players are sitting there.
- 22:36We had a leader, we had a guy that just created a huge
- 22:40problem, which has been the now it's going to go into the season
- 22:45as the biggest story going into the baseball season, you're,
- 22:48you're looking forward for pitchers and catchers.
- 22:50And, and, and obviously going into the new season and going
- 22:54into spring training, you don't want to hear that the strength
- 22:58of the players union is, is starting to tip the owner's way.
- 23:02And it is, it's starting to tip the owner's way and, and the
- 23:06commissioner works for the owners, he doesn't work for the
- 23:09players. So the commissioner and and Rob
- 23:12Manfred or Manfred or Manfred as Jabba calls him, you sit here
- 23:18and you wonder how does this, how is this going to work with a
- 23:21new representative and the players trusting this new
- 23:25representative who has no understanding of where the
- 23:29negotiations were going? I mean, obviously he's going to,
- 23:32he's got all the paperwork. He's got all the players that
- 23:35were in those conversations with Tony Clark to give him
- 23:38information. But he's going to be the guy
- 23:40that's going to be standing there and speaking for the
- 23:43players in front of all these owners and in front of the
- 23:46commissioner of baseball, wondering how do we protect the
- 23:50players and how do we make sure there's no strike going into
- 23:552027? The two things I think Clark
- 23:57really emphasized when he was the head of the MLPA was the
- 24:01fact that they weren't going to have a salary cap and the
- 24:03pitchers that were injured and like I guess some of those
- 24:06selected position players too that had long term injuries with
- 24:08Tommy John's surgery and stuff like that.
- 24:09Those that money was not going to come out of the of the GM's
- 24:13pockets, which I think helped him get insurance policies.
- 24:16You talked about that with Garrett Cole last year when he
- 24:18got hurt, that they would still make that money anyway and it
- 24:21wouldn't have to be an unpaid thing.
- 24:22And it was a good negotiation at the time for compromising in
- 24:26that sense. Now you look, you bring in
- 24:28somebody new in Bruce Meyer that does not have a lot of
- 24:30experience, is even a deputy executive, kind of was a
- 24:33figurehead for a lot of Clark's things.
- 24:35Maybe that's why guys like Bassett and Scuba believe that
- 24:38they have still a strong union, which I still believe they do.
- 24:41It's just a very difficult extreme as well when you're
- 24:45judging owners that are I think the most extreme in either
- 24:47direction too. It's very rare in baseball.
- 24:49I think compared to these other sports where you see owners that
- 24:51are on this like good middle ground of wanting to pay players
- 24:56reasonably and go from one extreme like the Dodgers and go
- 24:59to the other extreme like the Pirates that are cheap asses
- 25:01that don't that don't know how to control their players and
- 25:04don't pay anyone. It's rare that you see an
- 25:06Atlanta Braves, like Houston Astros type organization.
- 25:09That's kind of somewhere in between.
- 25:10And that's where I think you're also looking at the the divide
- 25:14to be still a lockout. I think even regardless of who
- 25:16the players association was. Do I still trust guys like
- 25:19school ball to be forceful? Yeah, because look at how he was
- 25:23in his own contract negotiations with the Tigers.
- 25:25They were a big example of that. He wanted arbitration case,
- 25:27thankfully, but the Tigers were low balling in the whole way.
- 25:32There will be samples of that to an extent.
- 25:34Will it be enough to prevent a lockout though in this extreme
- 25:36direction? I still don't know.
- 25:38I think it was even going to happen regardless.
- 25:39And I just really don't know if you could trust Bruce Meyer at
- 25:42this point to to save any chances of that one.
- 25:44Yes, there are some owners that still are going to try to be
- 25:47cheap anyway. But there's a lot of owners that
- 25:49are annoyed at what the Dodgers are doing now.
- 25:51And that's why I think they're still inevitably, I think
- 25:53regardless, going to go on strike as it was.
- 25:55There's no doubt baseball is going on strike.
- 25:58There's no doubt about it. This is just a story that's
- 26:01going to push it for that to happen.
- 26:04But Tony Clark and and the story and again, we don't know the
- 26:08full story. It just came out.
- 26:09Everybody's making jokes. It is funny.
- 26:12It's laughable because obviously you have a voice, the guy that
- 26:16has been the voice for the players for what, 10 years now,
- 26:19eight years now he's been running the show and and figure
- 26:23out negotiations. Remember, what was it a couple
- 26:25of years ago when we were talking about the minor leagues
- 26:27and what the players are making and, and Tony Clark was the guy
- 26:30that negotiated them a little bit more money.
- 26:32He was the guy that stood there and, and spoke about how
- 26:36important paying these AAA guys was, was not enough.
- 26:40And, and how are they going to take care of their families and,
- 26:43and move forward playing professional baseball?
- 26:45How are they going to last in the minor leagues to be the next
- 26:48superstar in the major leagues? So Tony Clark was the the face
- 26:52of that negotiation. Now, you would have expected
- 26:54Tony Clark was going to be the guy that's going to change
- 26:57baseball, give baseball an opportunity in, in this
- 27:01particular predicament that they've put themselves in.
- 27:04And, and, and again, the reason why I say the players put
- 27:07themselves in this situation is because they don't want to agree
- 27:10to any salary cap. They don't want to agree to any
- 27:12of it. And then you think about the
- 27:14Dodgers and what the Dodgers have done and a lot of the
- 27:16players that we've had on the show, not all of them, but most
- 27:19of them have come out and said that, say that they agree.
- 27:22If if the Dodgers want to do that, it's legal, why shouldn't
- 27:25they be able to do that? But here's the problem, since
- 27:28the Dodgers started to do that and everybody says, well,
- 27:31everybody can mimic it, that's not true.
- 27:33They cannot copycat what the Dodgers did.
- 27:36Everybody's got to agree to it. The every single player that
- 27:39they're negotiating a deal with has to agree to terms on how
- 27:44this is going to work. I mean, do you think Mookie
- 27:47Betts was sitting there? Now, Mookie Betts got a lot of
- 27:50his money and Friedman, there was some deferred money with
- 27:52Betts and Friedman. But I, I mean, half of these
- 27:55guys that we've seen over the last couple of years have come
- 27:59to an agreement because they want other players to come and
- 28:02join them to win more and more championships.
- 28:05But here's the problem with baseball.
- 28:07If you're expecting these teams to win championships and
- 28:09everybody's going to say go back to the Yankees in the 90's, the
- 28:13Yankees did not do that. I'll go back to it and I am
- 28:16going to stand up. Not because I'm a Yankee fan and
- 28:18I'm wearing a Yankee hat. That's not true.
- 28:21That's not why I'm sticking up for the Yankees.
- 28:23If anybody knows me on the show, I am fair about who I think the
- 28:27Yankees are and even all my teams.
- 28:29I'm not going to sit there and stick up for all my teams and be
- 28:31a Homer. I'm not Aaron Fishman.
- 28:34I'm just not. But here's the facts.
- 28:38That's true. I'm not Aaron Fishman.
- 28:40You're wearing a Yankee hat. But you know, you're right.
- 28:44Nobody wants to be. But here's the fact.
- 28:47I'm just, I'm speaking the truth here.
- 28:49I, I, I, I want to go into why I think the Yankees cannot be
- 28:54compared to what the Dodgers are today.
- 28:56One, the New York Yankees built around a core.
- 28:59They built around players they drafted over the years.
- 29:03You talk about how you define an organization, you got to define
- 29:07it in the minors. The Yankees brought in, I'll say
- 29:09it again, Derek Jeter, they drafted Bernie Williams, they
- 29:12drafted Andy Pettitte, they drafted Mariano Rivera, they
- 29:16drafted Jorge Posada. They built around a core of five
- 29:20players. They call it the core 4, but
- 29:22they were really five players. And what they did is they
- 29:25developed those players and then brought veterans around them.
- 29:29Were successful, a success, successful in their professional
- 29:33spots in the past or weren't as successful with their teams like
- 29:38Scott Brosius, who was a good player but not a great player
- 29:41until he went to the Yankees and they brought them to a team that
- 29:45had good camaraderie and and that changed everything.
- 29:48Scott Brosius became a subpar player at best to a playoff MVP.
- 29:54OK, you talk about guys like Charlie Hayes, a journeyman Wade
- 29:59Boggs, Hall of Famer. But at the tail end of his
- 30:01career, he played for Tampa, he played for obviously the Red
- 30:05Sox, played for the Yankees. His career was pretty much after
- 30:09he turned 3233 years old, his career was pretty much jumped
- 30:13from one team to another and try to figure out how to win a
- 30:15championship, which he never won with Boston.
- 30:18So you think about all the players, that's just some Rodger
- 30:21Clements, David Wells, I could go on.
- 30:23Jimmy Key, I could go on and on and on with some of the players
- 30:26they brought to this organization.
- 30:27What the Yankees did was completely different and
- 30:30everybody says they bought their players.
- 30:31They only bought their players in 2009.
- 30:34Me and Job. I've had that conversation
- 30:36again. Think about it.
- 30:37AJ Burnett, remember him. Mark Teixeira, remember him.
- 30:42CC Sabathia, remember him? They spent $500 million in an
- 30:46offseason because they wanted to win a championship.
- 30:49Actually, Hal and Hank wanted to win a championship for their
- 30:52father, who passed away in 2010, 2011.
- 30:55They wanted to make sure that their father had an opportunity
- 30:58to experience another championship before he parted
- 31:01ways with the earth. And they did that.
- 31:04But when they made a move for Alex Rodriguez, Alex Rodriguez
- 31:07was thrown to the Yankees. They failed.
- 31:10The Red Sox failed to seal the deal, and the Yankees jump in
- 31:13and stole them from them. And over the years, yeah, they
- 31:16brought Jason Giambi. They brought players in that
- 31:19didn't succeed. But what the Dodgers have done
- 31:22is completely different. And you're going to say how?
- 31:25How is it different? Simple.
- 31:26It's very simple. The Dodgers have one guy they
- 31:30drafted on their complete roster and in their lineup.
- 31:33Do you know who that is, Speedy? Π as I believe.
- 31:36No, it's their catcher. Oh, Smith.
- 31:38Smith is their guy. He he's the guy.
- 31:41He was the face of that offense over the last couple of years.
- 31:45They brought, they drafted Smith.
- 31:46They brought they, they put Smith centerfold as their their
- 31:50guy that they're, I guess they built around from their
- 31:52organization. And then who did they bring in?
- 31:54They brought in stars. They brought in good players,
- 31:57Hernandez, Edmonds, they brought in all these guys, Friedman
- 32:01bats, Otani. That's what they did.
- 32:04They bought their way into a championship.
- 32:07Look at their pitching staff. Are any of those guys guys that
- 32:12were developed by the Dodgers? No, they were not.
- 32:16So when you look at the Dodgers and you compare the Dodgers to
- 32:18the Yankees, they're uncomparable.
- 32:21They're uncomparable because what the Yankees did in the 90s,
- 32:25nobody thought was ever going to be matched.
- 32:27Why? Because baseball is so different
- 32:29now with the rule changes and even with 162 games, a lot of
- 32:35these managers aren't pitching them every fifth day.
- 32:37They're pitching them every 6th or 7th day because they want to
- 32:40save their arms for the playoffs.
- 32:42It's different. It's completely different
- 32:44because of analytics WAR, as we know.
- 32:47We're trying to figure out how analytics bring baseball to the
- 32:51forefront of professional sports, which it has been over
- 32:55the years. I got to give baseball a little
- 32:56bit of credit because they designed ways of adding new
- 33:00statistics and data that makes you sick to your stomach.
- 33:03It really does. I am not a statistician.
- 33:06I'm not a data analysis guy, but I sit here and you're telling me
- 33:10what all these different analytics or different things
- 33:14that have been brought to the forefront that help baseball
- 33:17recognize you as a defensive player, a base dealer or a power
- 33:21hitter. It makes you sick to your
- 33:22stomach. And then you have guys like Tony
- 33:24Clark who sits in the back end making all the money and he's
- 33:29the guy that sits there and listens to the players woes.
- 33:32Sits there and gives the players some information of what the
- 33:36owners are saying about them. And then goes there and pretty
- 33:39much sleeps with your wife or sleeps with your girlfriend or
- 33:42sleeps with your aunt or, you know, sleeps with whoever.
- 33:45I mean, it's pathetic. And now baseball, and I'll say
- 33:49this, the players union, it's to me, it's set up in a way where I
- 33:54don't know if Myers was the right guy unanimously being
- 33:58picked maybe as a puppet to the players.
- 34:00Maybe that's what it is. Unanimously he was picked
- 34:02because hey, you know what? We're going to tell you what to
- 34:05say, Meyer, and you're going to do what we tell you to do and
- 34:08you're going to make millions and millions of dollars.
- 34:09If it doesn't work out, well, we'll find some other idiot to
- 34:12do that too. So I think it's a big problem
- 34:15and I don't know how this is going to work for the players
- 34:18when these owners, these multi billionaires are sitting there
- 34:21with their lawyers and telling you go after yourself.
- 34:23We're going to we're we're going to drive a seat now tell Tony
- 34:26Clark to go sleep with your wives.
- 34:28Go, go tell them to sleep with your aunts or uncles.
- 34:32It it to me, it's really, really bad for baseball.
- 34:35This is not a story like betting on baseball or steroids, as
- 34:39everybody blew it out of proportion.
- 34:41But this is bad. Really bad.
- 34:43Yeah, again, you also mentioned the discrepancy of contracts too
- 34:46in baseball. That I think is also a bigger
- 34:48extreme. I'm not saying obviously,
- 34:49obviously the Dodgers are one extreme into the other, but I
- 34:51think it seemed like the Giants, obviously they're paying Rafael
- 34:53Devers a ton of money, but their next biggest contract is not
- 34:56great. And like you said, how much is
- 34:57the fourth or fifth highest paid player on the team making it
- 35:00might be like 15,000,000 a year or 20 million a year, if
- 35:03anything. And then even the lower market
- 35:04team. So they might have that one big
- 35:06contract and they just have a big drop off after that too.
- 35:09And that's been a problem for a while.
- 35:10That was even before we're talking about this with the
- 35:12deferred money, with the lockout.
- 35:14I think that was even happening before that were remember how
- 35:16long it took somebody like Eric Hosmer to sign when he signed,
- 35:19before he signed with the Padres and it took him until the end of
- 35:22that, that spring training. The Yankees did that with
- 35:25Mayhew, I believe when they signed him too.
- 35:26Like they took forever. It really took to the end of
- 35:29that because I just weren't sure because he was a not a power
- 35:32guy. He was a bat batting champion.
- 35:33Obviously he was a good, great defensive player when the
- 35:35Yankees brought him in and then they settled on A7 year
- 35:38$81,000,000 deal, which at the time seemed like a bargain,
- 35:40maybe didn't age well, but he still was a pretty good Yankee
- 35:43for the most part until maybe the last couple years.
- 35:46And that's the problem I think that I think MLB has because
- 35:49they want to pay those stars, especially the younger stars.
- 35:51They want to pay them all very quickly.
- 35:52And that's why you're seeing obviously a Braves model that I
- 35:55think other teams are now starting to replicate, but took
- 35:57a while for them to replicate. I think Fish you brought up with
- 35:59the A's recently. They did it with Brent Rooker,
- 36:03they did it with Langoliers. They they've done it with
- 36:05they've done it with Jacob Wilson.
- 36:07I think it was the one you were talking about.
- 36:08And now I you want to see teams replicate that to an extent with
- 36:12a with younger teams if they're going to be continuing to have a
- 36:14payroll discrepancy. But now with the potential
- 36:17lockout looming, like, do you want all that money going
- 36:19against you when you don't even know how these players develop
- 36:21if they take a year off from baseball?
- 36:22So there's a lot of factors in with a lot of different young
- 36:24teams and just a lot of teams all in different places.
- 36:27Yeah, no fool over there in, in I guess not Oakland anymore, I
- 36:30guess Sacramento for the time being.
- 36:33They they've jumped on that Soderstrom, Lawrence, Butler,
- 36:36other guys they've they've locked up.
- 36:39It's a smart model. The Braves did, it didn't work
- 36:41out for them because everyone got hurt this past year and they
- 36:43had some down years, but they've been really competitive because
- 36:46of that model without a top payroll.
- 36:48But this is the the worry, right, Errol?
- 36:51Now Tony Clark's gone, Meyer's in there.
- 36:53He's only been with baseball for three years, right?
- 36:56Since 20/22/23. Whatever it was as the deputy,
- 36:59how well is he going to represent the fact that the
- 37:02players have certain wants as well in this negotiation?
- 37:05It's not just this deferred money with the salary cap.
- 37:08It's also, you know, like the revenue sharing, how is that
- 37:12going to work going forwards with the streaming dollars?
- 37:16That's one of the main issues, how the players are going to get
- 37:18compensated for that, how that's going to replace the money from
- 37:22the regional networks. Like yes, network and SNY are
- 37:25still doing well, but throughout the country these places have
- 37:28failed. Like, I think it's just like TB,
- 37:30like the Turner stations have still done.
- 37:32And obviously they're, they're bigger than a regional station,
- 37:35but there's, there's very few like baseball things that have
- 37:39survived. So the model is being changed
- 37:42and there's a lot of fights about how that money is going to
- 37:44go and who's got the players interests.
- 37:47Not a good look for the players. And they're probably better off
- 37:50holding out than even trying to make a deal right now if this is
- 37:53what it is, Because I, I, I'm really concerned.
- 37:56And then Clark on top of it, man, it reminded me immediately
- 37:59of the Bobby Petrino story years ago when he's like trying to get
- 38:02away on the motorcycle. He gets in an accident with his
- 38:04mistress and then they try to cover it up.
- 38:07Like, you know, he didn't have a mistress who he was pretending
- 38:09it was assistant. You know what I mean, Pet?
- 38:11Getting paid on the school dime. That's exactly what he did here,
- 38:14except. It's even worse.
- 38:16It's so much. Worse, because they've had these
- 38:18labor talks coming up and now he's screwing the entire league
- 38:21of players on top of screwing his wife's sister.
- 38:24And then think about it. You're not just breaking up your
- 38:26marriage, you're breaking up like family.
- 38:30You're wrecking your first cousins, your second cousins,
- 38:33your aunts and the aunts and uncles in there.
- 38:35Like everything that you're like connected to is screwed up.
- 38:39And that is just I mean, that's all time scumbag behavior and
- 38:44he's got to go and I don't they did it.
- 38:46They put Meyer in because I think they're really desperate.
- 38:49They don't know what to do, He. Stepped down.
- 38:51It's not like they fired him. He stepped down right away.
- 38:54When this story came out, he ran, He made sure that he gave
- 38:57his papers in and he wants to disappear off the face of the
- 39:00earth because he not only is his family brought to the forefront
- 39:03and his wife, I feel bad for his wife because she's she's in the
- 39:07middle of this. She has nothing to do with it.
- 39:09And and she's in the middle of it.
- 39:11Think about this. His wife and her sister.
- 39:15OK, think about that. How how disrespectful can you
- 39:19get when it comes to being, you know, a man And and you're going
- 39:24to go out there and you're, you're all about when you get
- 39:26married, You're, you're there to death through your part.
- 39:28And then you're sleeping with my sister.
- 39:31How long has this been going on? You know, so think about it.
- 39:34And maybe this was the whole point of why you think about
- 39:38baseball as a whole. All the different allegations
- 39:41that we've seen over the last couple of years, how baseball's
- 39:43brushed everything under the rug.
- 39:45I was thinking, hey, this story came out.
- 39:47If if this story never came out, does baseball brush this under
- 39:50the rug? Because the Otani stuff, I mean,
- 39:53Tony Clark is not Shay Otani. Shay Otani is the national
- 39:57phenom. He's a superstar all over the
- 40:00world. So baseball made sure they
- 40:01protected their young. Superstar and made sure that
- 40:04they can continue making billions and billions of dollars
- 40:07this guy the baseball don't give a crap about So what did
- 40:09baseball do baseball and the owners we're excited about this
- 40:13why because now they don't have to deal with Tony Clark anymore.
- 40:16They don't have to deal with his craziness and and him stepping
- 40:19up there and and and telling the owners to go kiss that kiss
- 40:22their asses. No, now the owners are sitting
- 40:25there and saying OK we're in the driver's seat.
- 40:28We don't have to deal with Tony anymore and now we have to deal
- 40:31with some rookie who knows nothing about the position he's
- 40:34in. And and you have a bunch of
- 40:36billionaires saying, OK, this is what we're going to do.
- 40:38You don't like it, Well, tough. This is the deal we're giving
- 40:41you. If not, what you guys can go to
- 40:43strike. We're still going to be in the
- 40:44driver's seat. And you guys are going to be
- 40:46asking for scraps because we're not going to give it to you the
- 40:49way you have asked over the years.
- 40:51Because the union has always been in the driver's seat.
- 40:54The players union has always been that way.
- 40:57And we, we know what happened in 9596 because of what happened in
- 41:009596 is the same thing what we've seen over the years.
- 41:04But here's the bad thing. We have seen organizations
- 41:07completely fall apart as we know what happened to the Expos.
- 41:11The Montreal Expos could not afford to miss that season, that
- 41:15year, and they did. And with being that they lost
- 41:18all that money they had to sell the team and eventually Jeffrey
- 41:21Laurie move them to where to Washington and and and Montreal
- 41:27and, and I believe if the if that if 9596, it never went to
- 41:31strike baseball, never went to strike Montreal.
- 41:34The Montreal Expos would still be here.
- 41:36They'd still be a part of the major leagues and.
- 41:38Probably they were the best team in the league arrow that year.
- 41:41Probably would have won the team in the league, probably would
- 41:43have won the World Series too. That's, that's, that was my take
- 41:45there. I with all the talent that they
- 41:47had, Pedro Martinez and Vladimir Guerrero and all those talented
- 41:51players that have Galarago I think was on that team.
- 41:54They had guys that are Hall of Famers.
- 41:56They might have had 7 Walker, yes, 7 or 8 Hall of Famers that
- 42:00were part of that organization and they were traded away, moved
- 42:04away. I remember John Wetland, he was
- 42:06the Yankees closer when they won, They won their first
- 42:09championship in 96. So the Yankees were absolutely
- 42:12in the driver's seat when they got players of that, that Expo
- 42:15team. So I'm just saying when you look
- 42:18at where baseball's at now, I don't think any teams are in
- 42:21those predicaments anymore because there's so much money to
- 42:23be made with the new TV deals and, and all, all the different
- 42:27ways they can make money off of hats and jerseys and and merch.
- 42:31There's no way that any of these teams are in in bad, a bad
- 42:35position where if they miss the season or owners, they miss the
- 42:38season, they're they're going to lose out.
- 42:39They're not because they own other businesses and they have
- 42:43other opportunities to make money.
- 42:44It's the players that are going to lose out on this.
- 42:47After what Tony Clark did. This is bad.
- 42:49This is, this is bad for the players, not the owners, not for
- 42:52baseball. And I know everybody's going to
- 42:54say, well, the owners want baseball to keep on going.
- 42:56And, and I'm, I do believe that I think the owners are behind
- 42:59what they want baseball to do in 2000, 26 and 27.
- 43:03That's as far as 27 season is to have a season.
- 43:07Here's the problem. If they miss this season and
- 43:11they lose money, they have ways that they can use that through
- 43:14insurance policies. There are so many ways that
- 43:17these owners are still not going to lose as much, but not having
- 43:21a season. The fans are going to lose out,
- 43:23the players are going to lose out.
- 43:25Remember, each player that misses season, they miss out
- 43:28another year of money and another year of compensation
- 43:32that they're going to lose. And you're talking about players
- 43:34like Garrett Cole that's going to miss out on $38 million.
- 43:38How about, how about Juan Soto, $68 million he's going to miss
- 43:43out on. You think Juan Soto wants to
- 43:44miss out on $68 million? Not a chance in hell.
- 43:47Because if I'm not mistaken, if you go on strike, you don't get
- 43:50those contracts, you don't get that money.
- 43:51I don't. I don't know if that's true.
- 43:53So there's labor lockout. The contracts are null and void
- 43:56until they come back. That's right.
- 43:57So think about this. Juan Soto misses out on 68,
- 44:02$1,000,000. They don't want that.
- 44:04Players do not want that. So they thought by having Tony
- 44:08Clark negotiate this deal before September 1st, that would put
- 44:12them in the driver's seat to have a season in 2027.
- 44:15There is no way there. It's going to start the season
- 44:17without without going on a strike because they got to pull
- 44:21the first of all, you're going into a season and a lot of these
- 44:24players want to concentrate on the season.
- 44:26The union doesn't want these players to worry about next
- 44:29season. They want to worry about this
- 44:30season and how they they, they, they fight to, to continue
- 44:33making their money and, and get these teams into the playoffs
- 44:36and win a championship. So they're not even going to be
- 44:39speaking about until September 1st or September, you know, in
- 44:42sometime in September when the playoffs are going on and the
- 44:45seasons practically over. So unfortunately, you're
- 44:49wondering as a baseball fan, and I know there's a lot of baseball
- 44:51fans, including speedy, which is favorite sport, Josh Silverberg,
- 44:55who which is his favorite sport out of all the sports that don't
- 44:58want to see another or one season of their God-given lives
- 45:03miss when it comes to baseball and getting a chance, Oh, quote,
- 45:06UN quote, the Mets winning the World Series.
- 45:08But the Mets and the Dodgers are the reason why this strike might
- 45:11go to fruition, because of all the money that they've been
- 45:14spending and, and, and obviously the deferred money that the
- 45:17Dodgers completely have taking advantage.
- 45:19Of yeah, that's aren't smart enough to use deferred money,
- 45:21unfortunately. Well, they are actually.
- 45:23They did with the contract with Beau Beauchet.
- 45:27Finally, after all these big contracts, before that, Maxers
- 45:30are Justin Verlander. Yeah, they did.
- 45:31So that's the thing though, right?
- 45:33Like that's why the owners want a salary cap, because most of
- 45:36the owners in the league don't want to do the deferred dollars,
- 45:40because what the deferred dollars are is just what stock
- 45:43guys do, hedge funds guys do on Wall Street all the time.
- 45:47They're just creating future debt against the value of the
- 45:50franchise, which isn't worth close to the value.
- 45:53So it's just like, it doesn't matter.
- 45:56It's like they're trading stocks and the future debt, it doesn't
- 46:00apply. They don't have to pay into the
- 46:01revenue sharing the same if it's deferred to a later contract.
- 46:05So it's like a loophole that they're exploiting.
- 46:08And until other teams do the same thing as the Dodgers and
- 46:11leverage their future with debt, they're going to keep winning.
- 46:16Or you do a salary cap and and just nip it in the bud.
- 46:20Or you just say no more deferred contracts exceeding this amount
- 46:23of money and all the deferred money has to count against both
- 46:26today's salary cap and and then the penalty when it you know
- 46:29you're paying it out like Bobby Benia style.
