- 0:00Speaker 1: Play to be over and I just walk up behind
- 0:02Speaker 1: me and it's like touch him on his back, touch
- 0:05Speaker 1: him on his button, just like touches on. You're like, hm,
- 0:08Speaker 1: You're like, don't touch me. So display I'm on the ground.
- 0:14Speaker 1: I'm trying to touch and he looks. He just jumps
- 0:18Speaker 1: down on me and he's like elbowing me as he's
- 0:21Speaker 1: doing it.
- 0:22Speaker 2: I'm looking at for the rep. We're like, get him off,
- 0:25Speaker 2: get him?
- 0:32Speaker 3: What's up? Everybody on Peanut too mean?
- 0:34Speaker 4: And this is the NFL Player's Second Act podcast and
- 0:37Speaker 4: with me as always my trusty co hosts, mister Roman,
- 0:41Speaker 4: show my chest, I don't shave Harper. Oh yeah, man,
- 0:44Speaker 4: I appreciate. I get my own seff a clap on that.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Thank you, that was good. I'm actually like hubs, I
- 0:50Speaker 4: would say, because i'm your golf coach for the week.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Yes, I'm trying to help my guy out.
- 0:54Speaker 4: This has actually been very interesting because he's actually excited.
- 0:58Speaker 4: I'm excited because we got a golf for That is
- 1:01Speaker 4: a former NFL Hall of Famer on the podcast, right,
- 1:05Speaker 4: former in it. No, he is in there. He's not
- 1:07Speaker 4: a former. He is a Hall of Famer. He's a
- 1:09Speaker 4: former football player that was a Hall of Famer, but
- 1:11Speaker 4: now he's.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Just stopped talking. I got it. Look it.
- 1:14Speaker 4: First off, let me just say, y'all have seen this man.
- 1:16Speaker 4: If you've watched NFL films, you've seen this man. He
- 1:19Speaker 4: is like the face of talking. He paints his face.
- 1:24Speaker 4: He's a world class talker. He's in the Hall of Fame.
- 1:27Speaker 4: He has one hundred and thirty seven and a half sacks,
- 1:30Speaker 4: the most by a defensive tackle. He works now with
- 1:33Speaker 4: the NFL A Leigenus community. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome
- 1:37Speaker 4: to the pot. Mister John Redo just pop.
- 1:42Speaker 2: You guys are good.
- 1:44Speaker 4: All I'm gonna tell you is I just remember when
- 1:46Speaker 4: I was a kid, I used to watch the NFL
- 1:49Speaker 4: film shows and they would they would show you when
- 1:51Speaker 4: you were miked up, and you made that look fun
- 1:56Speaker 4: even though you were talking trash and I know you
- 1:58Speaker 4: weren't serious, you made it look so fun, and I
- 2:02Speaker 4: was just like, I want to play d line. I
- 2:05Speaker 4: want I'm too small, but like I wanted to be
- 2:08Speaker 4: in the trenches with you and just talk trash with you,
- 2:11Speaker 4: like you are in inspiration to all trash taggers. Let
- 2:14Speaker 4: me just say that, like that, that is you. There's
- 2:17Speaker 4: a few snippets of me talking trash to like big dudes,
- 2:21Speaker 4: big offensive linemen, and I was I was trying to
- 2:23Speaker 4: channel my inner John Rental like it just I got
- 2:26Speaker 4: to show you one day. But yeah, like specially special
- 2:29Speaker 4: place in my heart with the talking. It was pretty
- 2:31Speaker 4: pretty dope.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Well, I'll tell you what. NFL Film made it. They
- 2:34Speaker 2: definitely made it easy.
- 2:35Speaker 1: But it was difficult at the time because when we
- 2:39Speaker 1: started doing the taping or the they was putting the
- 2:42Speaker 1: mic in my shoulder pads, I kept getting shocked and.
- 2:49Speaker 3: They hadn't perfected it. How big was it was?
- 2:52Speaker 2: It?
- 2:52Speaker 1: Oh dude, it was huge. It was like a big
- 2:55Speaker 1: old block. And if you looked some of the films,
- 2:58Speaker 1: there's like a hump in my back. It's because that's
- 3:02Speaker 1: where the mic was at. So every just put the
- 3:05Speaker 1: mic on. They would use like some duct tape and stuff,
- 3:08Speaker 1: and every once in a while, because I kept putting
- 3:10Speaker 1: water on my shoulder pads the loose and keep myself loose,
- 3:14Speaker 1: it would come off. And occasionally they would come on
- 3:17Speaker 1: the sideline going down my shoulder pads during the game
- 3:20Speaker 1: trying to fix it and stuff and so, and that
- 3:24Speaker 1: was I'm like, I keep getting like something like sticking
- 3:28Speaker 1: or pinching me. He goes, yeah, you're getting shot, so
- 3:32Speaker 1: just part of it.
- 3:32Speaker 3: But the mic was like this big in his back.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:35Speaker 4: Well back then it's probably because you know, you got
- 3:37Speaker 4: just a little small things now yeah, but I mean
- 3:39Speaker 4: you were one of the first.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Features to do that.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Like I watched eight minutes of you last night in
- 3:44Speaker 4: my hotel room, just talking trash.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Steve Young. You're called hey Stevie, Stevie, and you.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Have like you havn't full blown conversations, mostly with yourself
- 3:53Speaker 4: correct and sometimes with referees.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Yep.
- 3:57Speaker 3: It was just pure entertainment.
- 3:58Speaker 4: So did you know, like, you know what, once I
- 4:00Speaker 4: started to get good at this, now I'm going to
- 4:03Speaker 4: get more camera time I get did you or you
- 4:06Speaker 4: were not even thinking that far into it?
- 4:08Speaker 2: I wouldn't thinking that far into it. I Uh.
- 4:11Speaker 1: For me, I had to try to some ways be
- 4:14Speaker 1: more comfortable. So talking make me feel more comfortable, just
- 4:21Speaker 1: just trying to start a conversation with a guy because
- 4:23Speaker 1: I wanted to get his attention. You know, I still
- 4:26Speaker 1: saw my I see him. I saw myself as still
- 4:29Speaker 1: a free agent player, even though I went to Pro
- 4:32Speaker 1: Bowls or whatever, and so when I was got somebody's attention,
- 4:37Speaker 1: I'm like, Okay, you're talking to me.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I got you. Yeah, you're talking to me.
- 4:41Speaker 1: And uh, Usually the conversation the guy kind of got
- 4:45Speaker 1: really into it, and sometimes he just forgot what he
- 4:48Speaker 1: was doing and whatever, and so I just kept pushing it,
- 4:52Speaker 1: pushing it, pushing it.
- 4:53Speaker 4: So you would do it to try and get it,
- 4:54Speaker 4: get guys out of their game. That's what a lot
- 4:56Speaker 4: of trash talking is. Did you ever say something and
- 4:59Speaker 4: regret it? You know that was probably a little too much.
- 5:02Speaker 2: No, No, I don't.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I don't think so, because in some ways that was
- 5:08Speaker 1: the part of it, and you got somebody who was angry.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Sometimes.
- 5:12Speaker 1: I think a lot of the best parts of it
- 5:13Speaker 1: they didn't record because I wasn't Mike. You know, I'm
- 5:19Speaker 1: just you're just going back and forth, man, going that
- 5:22Speaker 1: and stuff like with the Cowboys with Eric Williams and
- 5:25Speaker 1: Big Tackle Larry Allen Stephanosky. They knew going edit and
- 5:33Speaker 1: you know, you just I didn't. I'm like, yeah, there's
- 5:36Speaker 1: no MIC's on me today, man. So we're just gonna
- 5:38Speaker 1: we're gonna be rated X. We're gonna go edit, We're
- 5:42Speaker 1: gonna get down to it.
- 5:44Speaker 3: So do you remember the Trenton delf for story.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah. So I was kind of a younger
- 5:51Speaker 1: guy on the team. So we had Henry Thomas, I
- 5:53Speaker 1: think Chris Doblin was still on the team, and they
- 5:56Speaker 1: were the leaders. So I'm kind of like like the
- 5:59Speaker 1: little say you was surrounded by some big german shepherd
- 6:02Speaker 1: and I'm like a little chihuahua and went in there
- 6:05Speaker 1: with these guys. I'm trying to So I think Henry
- 6:10Speaker 1: got in a conversation with him or something and Trent
- 6:13Speaker 1: was like, you guys are dirty and all this and that,
- 6:16Speaker 1: and so I'm just thinking saying, we're dirty. So I'm
- 6:20Speaker 1: trying to get it. I'm trying to get to him,
- 6:22Speaker 1: and one time, i mean one of his office linees
- 6:24Speaker 1: just knocked me down on the ground and as I'm
- 6:27Speaker 1: on the ground, I'm just trying to reach up and
- 6:28Speaker 1: grab him, touch him, and I'm screaming, you know, like like
- 6:33Speaker 1: that child that we have that's not say spoiled, but
- 6:37Speaker 1: he just just won't stop, and I'm I'm trying to
- 6:40Speaker 1: touch him.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Was he on the ground, where.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Was he standing up?
- 6:44Speaker 1: And I'm yelling at him, but he's standing up, so
- 6:47Speaker 1: you know, I'm just like touching his leg, like just
- 6:49Speaker 1: trying to touch him. Like, man, just touch you. They
- 6:52Speaker 1: said we got to touch the quarter back. I want
- 6:54Speaker 1: to touch you. He's like, don't touch me, don't touch me,
- 6:59Speaker 1: and so you know, it's be like play to be over.
- 7:02Speaker 1: And I just walk up behind me and it's like
- 7:04Speaker 1: touch him on his back, touch him on his button,
- 7:06Speaker 1: just like touch his on You're like, h You're like,
- 7:10Speaker 1: don't touch me. So this play, I'm on the ground,
- 7:14Speaker 1: I'm trying to touch him and he looks down. He
- 7:19Speaker 1: just jumped down on me and he's like elbowing me.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Do him And I look out as he's doing it.
- 7:24Speaker 1: I'm looking at for Therough.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Like get him off, get him.
- 7:29Speaker 4: He got him kicked out of a game, only the
- 7:32Speaker 4: second time of quarterback's ever been ejected. Yeah, it's crazy,
- 7:35Speaker 4: and and this is what you're talking about. This is
- 7:38Speaker 4: but this is exactly why the method to your madness
- 7:41Speaker 4: is why it all works. So after this moment when
- 7:43Speaker 4: you get a quarterback kicked out, you're like ultra confident,
- 7:46Speaker 4: like what I'm doing is it worked?
- 7:48Speaker 1: No. I went back into the huddle, looked at the
- 7:50Speaker 1: guys in the huddle, thank you. I deserve an oscar
- 7:54Speaker 1: you know in me or something. It's my performance was spectacular.
- 7:59Speaker 1: And they look at you know, the guys, and he
- 8:00Speaker 1: look at you right and just shut up getting the
- 8:03Speaker 1: I'm like, man, that was spectacular.
- 8:05Speaker 2: I got him out the game. I got him out
- 8:08Speaker 2: the game.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Bro.
- 8:09Speaker 2: But you oh, dude, I was like, man, I got him.
- 8:12Speaker 2: He's gone. Yeah. I'm like, that's like a Michael Jordan
- 8:17Speaker 2: three pointer, Baby Lou.
- 8:20Speaker 4: Pure comedy, absolutely, pure comedies. Does John Rendall have a
- 8:27Speaker 4: Welcome to the NFL moment?
- 8:29Speaker 1: Oh my god, yeah, Mike, Mike, Welcome to the NFL
- 8:33Speaker 1: moment probably happened several times.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Uh, there's moments when I first got into the league.
- 8:40Speaker 1: I think to me, one of the ones was my
- 8:44Speaker 1: coach Paul Wiggins at the time, I'm playing behind Dolban.
- 8:48Speaker 2: And these guys, and he says, listen.
- 8:51Speaker 1: You're a rookie and I'm glad you're on his team,
- 8:54Speaker 1: but you're not going to play. Don't expect to play
- 8:57Speaker 1: because these guys, you know, so, I'm not gonna put
- 9:01Speaker 1: you in the game on defense.
- 9:03Speaker 2: You're just gonna play special teams. Okay with all right, So.
- 9:07Speaker 1: We go play Kansas City and they're doing their chance
- 9:09Speaker 1: over there and Chris doman shoelace breaks and all of
- 9:14Speaker 1: a sudden, he turns around, coach, looks at me, grabbing
- 9:18Speaker 1: me by my shoulders, leaves me to the right, leads
- 9:21Speaker 1: me to the left.
- 9:23Speaker 2: I need a defensive lineman.
- 9:26Speaker 1: And just looking around like and he looks at me again,
- 9:30Speaker 1: drops his head and goes go in the game. I
- 9:34Speaker 1: go in the game, man, and I'm going in the game.
- 9:36Speaker 1: I'm looking back like he's gonna call me back. Man,
- 9:39Speaker 1: He's gotta call me back. I'm not supposed to be
- 9:43Speaker 1: in there. There's no confidence. But that was one of
- 9:47Speaker 1: my moments. But my other one was going against Anthony
- 9:52Speaker 1: Munos and Jackie Slater.
- 9:56Speaker 2: I mean where Jackie.
- 9:58Speaker 1: His helmet was too tight, his face and squeezing his
- 10:01Speaker 1: face and he's out there just he's doing whatever he
- 10:04Speaker 1: wanted with me. I mean, man, he threw me left
- 10:07Speaker 1: to me right all over the place, camp to sideline
- 10:10Speaker 1: to my Paul Wiggins.
- 10:12Speaker 2: I'm like, what am I supposed to do? Just hang on, son,
- 10:16Speaker 2: hang on.
- 10:19Speaker 3: But I was a coach.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Anthony mor same thing. He's tossing me and I'm like this.
- 10:28Speaker 1: It was like screaming out you. I'm just trying to
- 10:30Speaker 1: do something. Man. I felt like I was with an octopus.
- 10:33Speaker 1: He was I'm just silent. Just hang on, Son, just
- 10:39Speaker 1: hang on. And I'm like, man, this is the NFL, man,
- 10:43Speaker 1: this is nothing like it.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Did it kill your confidence though or your mood when
- 10:47Speaker 4: your coach was like, hey, you're not playing this year,
- 10:49Speaker 4: just just do special teams?
- 10:50Speaker 3: Like did that? Dude?
- 10:51Speaker 4: Just like, no, I'm gonna show you. I'm gonna out there.
- 10:53Speaker 4: I'm gonna be a starter.
- 10:54Speaker 1: I was a guy in practice where everybody hate it.
- 10:57Speaker 1: I'm like, you know, I'm not getting any success in
- 11:00Speaker 1: on game day. I'm gonna get my success in practice.
- 11:04Speaker 1: This week I'm Derrick Thomas. Next week I'm howay long.
- 11:07Speaker 1: In practice, I'm gonna get some success. And that's why
- 11:10Speaker 1: I that time got my confidence was by doing that
- 11:14Speaker 1: in practice. But now it didn't stop me because for
- 11:18Speaker 1: me coming into the NFL as a free agent, a
- 11:20Speaker 1: guy that wasn't supposed to be here then and you
- 11:26Speaker 1: all sudden there's a door that opened up and I
- 11:29Speaker 1: got in.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Oh man, I'm gonna hang on.
- 11:33Speaker 3: So John.
- 11:33Speaker 4: I mean, I love your passion and you're not disappointing
- 11:37Speaker 4: me at all.
- 11:37Speaker 3: I knew you weren't going to Oh.
- 11:40Speaker 4: You know you came from college at Texas Valley, Texas A,
- 11:45Speaker 4: and I Texas A and I what is that the
- 11:49Speaker 4: javelin jas?
- 11:51Speaker 3: How do you say that?
- 11:54Speaker 2: Yes?
- 11:54Speaker 3: But what people don't.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Remember, don't think about. That's what Darryl Green unto Ah
- 12:00Speaker 1: where Gene Upshaw went too.
- 12:03Speaker 3: So you guys got haull of famers.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Even got Evil Longoria went there.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Bro, that's big. We're dropping facts today. We'll be right back,
- 12:17Speaker 3: all right.
- 12:18Speaker 4: So understanding that you already come in, you're undrafted, what
- 12:23Speaker 4: kept you motivated? Because I don't think most people, including myself,
- 12:26Speaker 4: until I looked you up and shout out to Thomas
- 12:28Speaker 4: for doing a great job on our research team, that
- 12:31Speaker 4: you got cut from the Falcons and the Bucks.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Yeah, they brought me in, but they was like, my
- 12:38Speaker 1: brother's was at Tampa and they were like, yeah, you're
- 12:42Speaker 1: not a Defenson lineman, so we're gonna try to move
- 12:45Speaker 1: you the linebacker and.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Your brother's like, bro, don't do that.
- 12:48Speaker 2: No, my brother was like, yeah, you can be here.
- 12:50Speaker 1: You know, my brother's like you can be here, you
- 12:51Speaker 1: and I be together, hang out, And I said, man, no,
- 12:56Speaker 1: I want to be a defensive lineman. And that's in
- 13:00Speaker 1: my heart, my mind, that's why I wanted to play.
- 13:03Speaker 1: And I knew it wasn't gonna happen in Tampa, and
- 13:06Speaker 1: so I left. Basically, yeah, cut, they didn't they didn't care.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Let go ahead.
- 13:11Speaker 4: Yeah, and that that never slows you down. It was
- 13:15Speaker 4: really all the self motivation.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Then you got the Minnesota your coach, believe in your
- 13:18Speaker 4: d line coach, and you had a couple of parameters
- 13:21Speaker 4: before you could play correct.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I was playing. I was just mostly special team. Man.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I was on kickoff, punt, punt return, even had me
- 13:29Speaker 1: on hands team. But my job wasn't to catch.
- 13:32Speaker 3: You were definitely blocking. Yeah, yeah, that was that guy.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:36Speaker 1: And I actually got in my rookie year and on
- 13:41Speaker 1: hands team and wasgainst the Raiders and the guys like, man,
- 13:46Speaker 1: your job is to get that dude touches the ball.
- 13:50Speaker 1: He touches the ball, take him out, not take him out,
- 13:53Speaker 1: but just knock him off. So and I did, and
- 13:56Speaker 1: the dude was number eighty one.
- 13:59Speaker 3: You get a little guy, No, he's Tim Brown.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Tim Brown.
- 14:02Speaker 1: He got in mind right there, and I'm like, brouh,
- 14:04Speaker 1: I'm sorry, sir, this is gonna hurt.
- 14:07Speaker 3: I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Did you say What did you say?
- 14:12Speaker 3: Because I know you said something. I know you weren't
- 14:14Speaker 3: talking to Okay.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I came up, man, ran down on the hands team
- 14:19Speaker 1: put that mouth piece in.
- 14:23Speaker 2: He stuck his hands up. Oh I got up.
- 14:28Speaker 3: I was like, yeah, that had to hurt. Oh my god.
- 14:38Speaker 4: You became a full time starter in nineteen ninety one
- 14:43Speaker 4: and you had nine and a half sacks.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Yeah, what did that moment feel like?
- 14:50Speaker 1: I'm out about in experience because I actually broke my
- 14:54Speaker 1: thumb and I was playing with a broke thumb with
- 14:57Speaker 1: a had the cast on, and they were like, hey,
- 15:00Speaker 1: you can play with it, or we can, you know,
- 15:03Speaker 1: put you on end the reserve. And I'm like, oh, man,
- 15:05Speaker 1: I didn't come this far just to be put on
- 15:08Speaker 1: the shelf. And I was playing with it. But it
- 15:12Speaker 1: just pushed me to just think what I could do
- 15:17Speaker 1: if I had had my hand, and how much more
- 15:21Speaker 1: I could accomplish. But it just pushed me because at
- 15:27Speaker 1: the time, I think in the NFL most teams had
- 15:31Speaker 1: older players. It wasn't a lot of young players, and
- 15:35Speaker 1: I was just for myself. I think I was speaking
- 15:37Speaker 1: for the young guy. And you know what, you guys
- 15:40Speaker 1: are comfortable, You had your success, and you're good with
- 15:44Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm hungry, and I'm hungry all the time,
- 15:48Speaker 1: and I just want a chance play something, and it
- 15:52Speaker 1: just it just pushed me. And I think I just
- 15:54Speaker 1: pushed myself to try to prove that a kid from
- 15:58Speaker 1: a town of one hundred and fifty people could do
- 16:03Speaker 1: something and that I mattered. And I think that's the
- 16:07Speaker 1: message that I take with me today is that it
- 16:10Speaker 1: doesn't matter where you come from, doesn't matter who you are,
- 16:13Speaker 1: doesn't matter if you have a single parent or your
- 16:16Speaker 1: parents are two females or two males or whatever. In
- 16:18Speaker 1: this world, even to your grandparents, you can achieve stuff
- 16:22Speaker 1: if you set your mind to it.
- 16:24Speaker 2: That's what I.
- 16:25Speaker 4: Carry great point, And let's talk about how you continue
- 16:28Speaker 4: to carry on that success from nineteen ninety three to
- 16:31Speaker 4: nineteen ninety eight, where you were six straight all pros,
- 16:36Speaker 4: went to the Pro Bowl every year and you had
- 16:39Speaker 4: what ten ten plus sacks?
- 16:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I think yeah, and every single of.
- 16:42Speaker 4: Those seasons seven Pro Bowls total, like, how, like what
- 16:47Speaker 4: kind of carried you through that stretch? Like when you're
- 16:49Speaker 4: on this heater, did you realize your only heater?
- 16:51Speaker 1: Na you were just I felt since I grew up
- 16:55Speaker 1: in the country and I love watching westerns, I felt
- 16:59Speaker 1: like I was that gun slinger who's going from town
- 17:01Speaker 1: to town with that reputation, and I'm like, like Clint
- 17:06Speaker 1: Eastwood is something like, bruh, I'm ready to back it up.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Whoever is the bad is in this town. Let me see.
- 17:13Speaker 1: I want to see what you got, see what I got.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Let's go at it. And I think if I wasn't
- 17:20Speaker 1: trashed off so much, I might have got a few
- 17:23Speaker 1: extra years on maybe guys. Because I didn't, I wasn't
- 17:29Speaker 1: very popular, so guys kind of hated me with that reputation.
- 17:34Speaker 1: And because we have guys come on the team and
- 17:35Speaker 1: some other teams go, man, you know what, I hate you,
- 17:39Speaker 1: and how would you be like.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Oh, that's special.
- 17:44Speaker 1: I feel like Sally feels you really do like me,
- 17:47Speaker 1: And I didn't care because for me, I'm trying to
- 17:50Speaker 1: help my team win.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Yeh, bruh by all means matters. I'm trying to do that.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Do you think that's it's a difference in today's game.
- 17:58Speaker 4: I hear a lot of older players include my we
- 18:01Speaker 4: did not care if people hated us versus I think
- 18:04Speaker 4: now in today's football and other sports, basketball especially, these
- 18:09Speaker 4: guys are a lot more friendly. Like did you exchange
- 18:12Speaker 4: jerseys after games? That's what I'm saying, Like, I don't
- 18:15Speaker 4: think any of that stuff. I need that my last
- 18:17Speaker 4: year because I knew I was going to retire. I
- 18:19Speaker 4: knew I was on my way out, so I wanted
- 18:21Speaker 4: certain jerseys.
- 18:22Speaker 1: I think back then, I mean, man, the way guys were,
- 18:26Speaker 1: they didn't care about that. I mean, man, you going
- 18:28Speaker 1: the fields. Dudes were hitting you in between the legs,
- 18:32Speaker 1: doing whatever they wanted on the ground. It was about
- 18:36Speaker 1: helping your team win. I think the guys thought was,
- 18:40Speaker 1: if you don't like me and my team is having success,
- 18:43Speaker 1: so be it. And I was like, hey, I'm the
- 18:46Speaker 1: same way. I want my team to win. I want
- 18:49Speaker 1: to be I want our team to be as successful
- 18:51Speaker 1: as possible. And if I got to go through you,
- 18:55Speaker 1: I mean in some locker room, I was being one
- 18:58Speaker 1: of them at the time. We used to say, hey,
- 19:01Speaker 1: if my mom is the other side of the ball
- 19:03Speaker 1: and she stands with football.
- 19:05Speaker 2: I'm sorry, mom, but this's gonna hurt. That's just gonna hurt.
- 19:09Speaker 1: I'm sorry, Mom, I love you, but you're interfering what
- 19:12Speaker 1: I'm supposed to be doing.
- 19:13Speaker 3: So I get it. I get it.
- 19:16Speaker 4: So we all have a game where we probably think
- 19:20Speaker 4: it was our best. When I think my Tennessee game
- 19:23Speaker 4: is probably one of my best statistical games. So in
- 19:26Speaker 4: ninety six, Week four, Brett Farman ringmy Packers, you had
- 19:30Speaker 4: three and a half sacks and you forced two fumbles.
- 19:34Speaker 4: What do you think your best statistical game is?
- 19:38Speaker 2: Oh, that's easy. That was where we watch Bruce Smith.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Go against Tony Biselli and Tony thought he really kind
- 19:53Speaker 1: of he kind of handled Bruce, and me, being a guy,
- 19:56Speaker 1: was look to this day, look up to Bruce Smith.
- 19:59Speaker 1: I'm like, man, how dare that man put his hands
- 20:02Speaker 1: on Bruce Smith. So in the defensive end, had a conversation,
- 20:08Speaker 1: said get ready to play Tony Biselli. I said, you
- 20:10Speaker 1: don't mind, sir if I sneak out there for a
- 20:12Speaker 1: few reps on mister Boselli. I have something I need
- 20:15Speaker 1: to discuss with this man. So I jumped out there.
- 20:21Speaker 1: He wasn't expecting this to come around that corner and
- 20:25Speaker 1: I was all over mister Tony Boselli. Tony and I
- 20:28Speaker 1: are good friends. Now we've discussed this and we have
- 20:31Speaker 1: a good relationship about this. Now okay, but I had
- 20:35Speaker 1: to do this on mister Boselli and now I upped him.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Bruh. I came out there. I was like that movie Tombstone.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Man.
- 20:42Speaker 2: I was like, like Doc Holiday, I'll be a Huckleberry
- 20:45Speaker 2: say when that's my game.
- 20:47Speaker 1: And dude coming around that corner and I was ooh,
- 20:50Speaker 1: and I'm like, man, this is for Bruce. He was
- 20:52Speaker 1: trying to talk to my man, don't talk to me.
- 20:54Speaker 1: You put your hands on Bruce. That's another pass rusher.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Don't do that, man. For me, that was a game.
- 21:01Speaker 3: You're talking about other pass rushers.
- 21:02Speaker 4: Did you have, like any other friendly competition with all
- 21:05Speaker 4: the other great pass rushers.
- 21:06Speaker 3: It was Reggie White at the.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Time, Yeah, Bruce, Chris Dolman, Kevin Green, uh, you know
- 21:11Speaker 4: Greg Lloyd came about. Yeah, Yeah, all these guys were
- 21:15Speaker 4: great pass rushers.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Since I had mister Chris Dolman guard rest soul Doe,
- 21:22Speaker 1: would he would teach you about past running, Like see Johnny,
- 21:27Speaker 1: look at the stats see what how everybody else is doing.
- 21:29Speaker 1: I'm like, man, y'all defensive vans, I said, I'm not
- 21:33Speaker 1: looking at that. What I would do was I would
- 21:35Speaker 1: watch other pass rushers and kind of steal their moves.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean Reggie had the hump move instead the hunk. Yeah.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Since I'm only six to one, mine was a little miniature.
- 21:44Speaker 3: Hump, a little hump.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:48Speaker 1: But yeah, we we would compete. Uh. I mean tell you,
- 21:53Speaker 1: you watch them with each other, and you watch somebody play,
- 21:56Speaker 1: you know, we sit there and you watch, like, man,
- 21:59Speaker 1: this got right here, he's coming this year, he's coming.
- 22:02Speaker 1: I mean like Ken Harvey, he was outside lineback, and
- 22:06Speaker 1: man Ken was always up in there. But I'm like, man,
- 22:09Speaker 1: if I was lined up outside, nobody over me, can
- 22:11Speaker 1: I'd get ten two? But I got to deal with
- 22:14Speaker 1: this garden. The center keeps flying to me every time.
- 22:17Speaker 3: What was your best pastors move back?
- 22:18Speaker 4: Then?
- 22:19Speaker 1: It was called like a jabbala where I stood on outside,
- 22:21Speaker 1: hit a hard step, and as soon as I saw
- 22:23Speaker 1: the guy hands come outside, I would either kind of
- 22:27Speaker 1: do a little little mental swim or rip it inside
- 22:30Speaker 1: go inside on him. But that was one I just
- 22:35Speaker 1: tried to just whatever For me, it wasn't about my
- 22:38Speaker 1: best move. It was what that guy was having problem
- 22:42Speaker 1: with because I would go back to the beginning of
- 22:44Speaker 1: the season or even last season to watch this guy
- 22:47Speaker 1: and see what moves he was beat on, and I
- 22:50Speaker 1: would perfect those moves for that week to be ready.
- 22:54Speaker 2: For that guy on that little method of my madness.
- 22:57Speaker 4: Like you just said madness, there's definitely some good madness.
- 23:02Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 23:03Speaker 4: I liked facing Calvin Johnson, you know, Randy Moss. Those
- 23:09Speaker 4: are like the guys that I enjoyed going against those
- 23:12Speaker 4: guys being in our division. Is there a quarterback or
- 23:15Speaker 4: was there a quarterback that you like to face?
- 23:19Speaker 1: That's definitely Brett Farr because he was in Wisconsin. Since
- 23:22Speaker 1: I'm in Minnesota. Yea, And Wisconsin's saying for some strange
- 23:27Speaker 1: reason they liked coming to Minnesota with that Green Bay
- 23:30Speaker 1: Packer stuff, like they were playing us that week. I'm like,
- 23:33Speaker 1: y'all not even playing us? Why are y'all even here?
- 23:36Speaker 1: You should be in Detroit. You're playing Detroit because we're
- 23:40Speaker 1: the Green Bay Packers, and so a lot of our
- 23:42Speaker 1: fans in Minnesota are either Vikings standing or the Packer fans,
- 23:47Speaker 1: and so for me, I always wanted to represent and
- 23:50Speaker 1: I always told my Vikings, man, I'm trying to do
- 23:52Speaker 1: whatever I can since I understand because they were telling
- 23:55Speaker 1: me at the time that their husband was a packer fan.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Whatever I said this week, you're gonna appreciate me because
- 24:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna try to do wherever I can to help
- 24:03Speaker 1: our team and help you your household.
- 24:06Speaker 2: You're gonna be the winner this week. And that's what
- 24:09Speaker 2: I tried to do.
- 24:10Speaker 4: So when I'm gonna flip that question, was there a
- 24:12Speaker 4: quarterback that you hated to go against?
- 24:14Speaker 2: Oh? Hated go against? That's a good question.
- 24:18Speaker 1: All the ones that just took off running like my
- 24:21Speaker 1: last few years played Michael Vick and I'm like, man,
- 24:24Speaker 1: this man right here.
- 24:27Speaker 2: This ain't right.
- 24:29Speaker 3: But did you ever have a sack on Vic?
- 24:32Speaker 2: I got him? Sure did?
- 24:33Speaker 1: Yeah, man, that was you know, me getting a sack,
- 24:36Speaker 1: And I think it was like my be the thirteenth year,
- 24:41Speaker 1: you know, getting the sack, being the older defensive lineman.
- 24:45Speaker 2: And sitting down going you see that young bucks.
- 24:48Speaker 1: I got Vic, I meany y'all got on Vic old man.
- 24:56Speaker 1: But most of them, the mobile quarterbacks, they would just
- 24:59Speaker 1: take call and but I just liked for him to
- 25:02Speaker 1: a stand back there and we can run them wild
- 25:05Speaker 1: games come around the corner. Because we had to get
- 25:08Speaker 1: there because for me, my DB's who will put on
- 25:11Speaker 1: an island?
- 25:12Speaker 2: Thank you. Hey, I gotta protect y'all, man, thank you.
- 25:15Speaker 2: That was my thing. I don't want my dvs on
- 25:17Speaker 2: an island.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Bro.
- 25:18Speaker 3: I appreciate that.
- 25:19Speaker 2: It goes back to back to Texas's Friday night lights.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Man.
- 25:22Speaker 2: I'm like, hey, we got to get there, boys. We
- 25:25Speaker 2: owe it to our dB.
- 25:27Speaker 4: So all right, you're not only a Hall of Fame
- 25:29Speaker 4: football player, which you're also a Hall of Fame storyteller.
- 25:32Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 25:33Speaker 3: It's been fantastic. Spectaclar is the word that you like
- 25:37Speaker 3: to use like that? Do you like that?
- 25:40Speaker 4: I want to know this and hopefully you can tell
- 25:43Speaker 4: me the story about it. Do you remember your only
- 25:46Speaker 4: NFL touchdown in your career?
- 25:48Speaker 2: Yeah, it was it's the Giants.
- 25:51Speaker 1: That was It was after nine to eleven and we're
- 25:55Speaker 1: in New York and it was a tragic time and
- 25:59Speaker 1: I remember was taking a trip and uh, it was
- 26:03Speaker 1: just a strange time, man, you know, getting that in
- 26:07Speaker 1: New York as I'm like, I think that's something that
- 26:12Speaker 1: I cherish too, because it's New York's. Man, it's in
- 26:15Speaker 1: New York. It's I got a touchdown. I remember telling
- 26:20Speaker 1: the youngery man, y'all see the old man again. I
- 26:23Speaker 1: got something in New York that none of the line.
- 26:26Speaker 1: You got a touchdown, but it was spectacular. I remember it.
- 26:30Speaker 1: I couldn't even hear the crowd though, Man, I couldn't
- 26:33Speaker 1: hear the crowd. But getting on that ball amazing.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Did you keep the ball?
- 26:37Speaker 2: Yes, of course.
- 26:42Speaker 4: I mean you accomplished so much. I can't believe you
- 26:44Speaker 4: never had another way.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Well, you know what, I got interception on time, tried
- 26:48Speaker 1: to score it and against the forty nine ers. But
- 26:51Speaker 1: I think for me, I have so much more to accomplish.
- 26:56Speaker 1: And it's not on the field. It's definitely off the field.
- 26:59Speaker 1: And there's just so much more I want to do too,
- 27:02Speaker 1: And uh, it's there's so much more to tell my story.
- 27:08Speaker 4: Right, Well, let's talk about a little bit more of
- 27:12Speaker 4: that story. Okay, golf? Yeah, is this your new passion?
- 27:16Speaker 4: It's definitely mine. Let's let's talk about it.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Okay.
- 27:20Speaker 4: I heard you are are you are reportedly a twelve handicap.
- 27:25Speaker 2: I am a U S G, A bro.
- 27:28Speaker 3: Yes, sir, okay, I'm with it to I got it.
- 27:32Speaker 3: I have no idea what is what is gin? What
- 27:34Speaker 3: is it?
- 27:35Speaker 2: What is it?
- 27:36Speaker 4: What are we talking about? I'm like the listeners, We
- 27:38Speaker 4: have no idea what you guys so many.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Moss, give me a follow. You're on the outside. We're
- 27:44Speaker 3: actually inside. We'll bring me inside. I knocking, let me open.
- 27:49Speaker 3: We're gonna let you in, all right.
- 27:51Speaker 4: The GIN is like how people track your your your handicap,
- 27:57Speaker 4: and so you record your scores after you play, after
- 28:00Speaker 4: each round you play, and it has this average about
- 28:04Speaker 4: where you are, and then that is what people use
- 28:06Speaker 4: as your handicap for when you play in tournaments. This
- 28:09Speaker 4: is how they crack how good you are. Like professionals
- 28:13Speaker 4: are like pluses, right, we're minus?
- 28:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:16Speaker 3: When did you get in the golf?
- 28:18Speaker 2: Well?
- 28:18Speaker 1: I was had kind of played before a little bit
- 28:21Speaker 1: here and there. But when I got in the Hall
- 28:23Speaker 1: of Fame Steve Perry, who's the president of Hall at
- 28:26Speaker 1: the time, it took me on the course. So I'm
- 28:28Speaker 1: with the president of Hall of Fame. You know, I'm
- 28:30Speaker 1: just like, man, I just got all. He was like,
- 28:33Speaker 1: do you play golf? I go play a little bit?
- 28:35Speaker 1: You know, I have my sticks and you know. So
- 28:38Speaker 1: we got out there and we were playing. I shot
- 28:40Speaker 1: like a ninety eight. I'm like, all right, ninety eight,
- 28:43Speaker 1: but you shoot He goes, you know, he shot like
- 28:46Speaker 1: a ninety two whatever, And I think a guy's name
- 28:50Speaker 1: was Dave Motts. Dave Motts comes up to me and goes, yeah,
- 28:53Speaker 1: you shot like a ninety eight, but you owe like
- 28:57Speaker 1: two hundred bucks. Well, see, you would last on the green,
- 29:03Speaker 1: you would last on the fairways, and you missed this
- 29:09Speaker 1: here hold, so you was off that one and I
- 29:11Speaker 1: was on that one first, and.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Steve Perry you were. You were on that on.
- 29:15Speaker 1: So Steve, you get twenty bucks for that, and you
- 29:17Speaker 1: owe me two hundred books. I'm like what, I'm like, okay,
- 29:23Speaker 1: gave me this two hundred bucks. And after that I
- 29:26Speaker 1: started practicing. Yeah, and I started reading this book by
- 29:30Speaker 1: Harvey Pennock, a little red book started teaching me about
- 29:33Speaker 1: golf and the strategy of golf. About most people, you
- 29:37Speaker 1: go to range, you pull out your driver, you want
- 29:40Speaker 1: to hit boom. Well it taught me that you know
- 29:44Speaker 1: you want to you want to chip and putt because
- 29:46Speaker 1: that's where you you hit every hole.
- 29:49Speaker 2: You chip and putt. You don't normally hit your driver
- 29:52Speaker 2: every hole.
- 29:53Speaker 1: So I started learning that to the point where I
- 29:56Speaker 1: didn't even have a driver. When I first started playing.
- 29:58Speaker 1: I had a three iron, a four iron. I'm like,
- 30:01Speaker 1: don't need a driver, and people will seeing you going
- 30:03Speaker 1: you don't have a driver, Like, nah, what you got
- 30:05Speaker 1: got My three hours I'm hearing are about two thirty forty.
- 30:11Speaker 1: Then I can play that. Yeah, and you can. Man,
- 30:14Speaker 1: you do that shot over and over. That's your percentage
- 30:16Speaker 1: right there, over and over again.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Man. I started playing.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Better and better, and I like walking because it's six
- 30:25Speaker 1: miles ruh to do the amount of walkings I do
- 30:31Speaker 1: on the golf course, and the winter in Minnesota takes
- 30:35Speaker 1: me two hours on the treadmill. So, man, walking on
- 30:38Speaker 1: the golf course, it's a beautiful thing. Beautiful thing watching
- 30:42Speaker 1: that ball when it's just.
- 30:45Speaker 4: Oh man, let's talk about some of the work you're
- 30:49Speaker 4: doing with the Llegenus community. Well just just tell us
- 30:53Speaker 4: what what is Allegen's community and what are you doing
- 30:55Speaker 4: with the alleged community specifically mental health?
- 30:57Speaker 1: Okay, the Legend community is by engaging, celebrating, and educating
- 31:00Speaker 1: former players. For me, it's more than that.
- 31:04Speaker 2: For me.
- 31:06Speaker 1: On the personal note, the Legends community is allowing me
- 31:09Speaker 1: to give back to guys who I played with. Who
- 31:14Speaker 1: the guys that say we're running games up on the
- 31:17Speaker 1: defensive line held.
- 31:18Speaker 2: A guy up and made the play. It allows me
- 31:20Speaker 2: to give back to guys.
- 31:21Speaker 1: And because for me, this game of football, man has
- 31:25Speaker 1: given me so much my wife. I met my wife
- 31:28Speaker 1: in Minnesota, and I wouldn't have had that without football.
- 31:32Speaker 1: So for me to engage guys to give back to
- 31:36Speaker 1: his game and to be able to help guys who
- 31:41Speaker 1: come from the game and have injuries or mental health problems, man,
- 31:45Speaker 1: that's for me to help those guys out. Because being
- 31:50Speaker 1: in Minnesota, I see a lot of former players I
- 31:51Speaker 1: played with, and when we have our Legends week once
- 31:55Speaker 1: a year, guys come back. Man, you're talking to guys
- 31:58Speaker 1: that I hadn't seen in twenty some years. I'm talking
- 32:01Speaker 1: to him finding out that they have issues. And being
- 32:05Speaker 1: a guy, we always think that we don't want to
- 32:08Speaker 1: tell what's going on with us. But a lot of
- 32:11Speaker 1: times guys will talk to the guys they played with.
- 32:15Speaker 1: They'll tell you what's going on before they tell their wives,
- 32:19Speaker 1: so before they tell their friends and family, they'll tell
- 32:22Speaker 1: from a player, And so me talking to these guys, man,
- 32:26Speaker 1: is putting them in a better place because to me,
- 32:30Speaker 1: you give so much on that football field, your blood,
- 32:33Speaker 1: sweat and tears. Man, I want to some way give
- 32:36Speaker 1: it back to you by making it life a little
- 32:38Speaker 1: bit easier and giving you information about what's out there
- 32:42Speaker 1: that you may not know about. And I saw I
- 32:45Speaker 1: do that through the Legends community and being a part
- 32:48Speaker 1: of it is just wonderful, man, because you can come
- 32:51Speaker 1: to somebody who's got a frown on that face, and
- 32:53Speaker 1: when you get done talking to them, they've got to
- 32:55Speaker 1: smile on the face. Man, Because when the guys see you,
- 32:59Speaker 1: they don't just see you. You bring back memories to him.
- 33:03Speaker 2: Yeah. So man, when you talking to him, it's the brotherhood, you.
- 33:08Speaker 4: Know, John, You know we all share locker rooms, and
- 33:12Speaker 4: maybe it is that memory aspect. But I want to
- 33:14Speaker 4: ask you anyways, it's like, why do we share so
- 33:17Speaker 4: much easily with our own versus Like I was like,
- 33:21Speaker 4: we would do that, You're right. I don't know if
- 33:24Speaker 4: I've heard it put that way, but I don't know
- 33:27Speaker 4: why I was so much more open to share stories
- 33:29Speaker 4: with you or Peanut or any other football guys walking
- 33:33Speaker 4: around than I am, sometimes with my own brother or.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Because for me, it's part like the military. When you're
- 33:39Speaker 1: in a foxhold with somebody and you spend ten to
- 33:42Speaker 1: twelve hours a day with each other, man, you get
- 33:46Speaker 1: to know each other and you're talking about stuff. And
- 33:51Speaker 1: I had so many conversations that locker room with guys
- 33:54Speaker 1: talking about their kids. I mean, Benson Lafe fish Gerald
- 33:57Speaker 1: grew up in our locker room. Yeah, Kim Jordan grew
- 34:01Speaker 1: up in our locker room. So I have a relationship
- 34:03Speaker 1: with those guys. That's from being in that locker room.
- 34:07Speaker 1: That's from like being your neighbor, but being that neighbor
- 34:11Speaker 1: where who sits outside in his chair and he has
- 34:14Speaker 1: another chair for you. You come out here and y'all
- 34:16Speaker 1: sit and talk and the conversation goes wherever you guys
- 34:20Speaker 1: want it.
- 34:21Speaker 2: And that's that foxhole.
- 34:22Speaker 1: Man. You day in, day out, you're out there balland
- 34:25Speaker 1: he was looking at each other eyes like today's not
- 34:28Speaker 1: a good day. I'm playing all right, but I wish
- 34:30Speaker 1: I was doing better. But you talk to him here, hey, man,
- 34:34Speaker 1: we in this together, bro in this together. And that's
- 34:38Speaker 1: what it's like in there. And like I said, that blood,
- 34:40Speaker 1: sweat and tears. But you share lives, man, you share
- 34:45Speaker 1: emotional time Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's.
- 34:49Speaker 3: Because you're practice and that's every day.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Man.
- 34:53Speaker 1: You coming in there a lot of times, guys, we'll
- 34:57Speaker 1: get together and we have conversation. And I may have
- 34:59Speaker 1: forgot about it this man. You remember when we were
- 35:03Speaker 1: hanging out and all of a sudden I was going
- 35:05Speaker 1: through something, man.
- 35:06Speaker 2: And you stayed with me. Man, But he goes, why
- 35:09Speaker 2: are you stay? Man?
- 35:10Speaker 1: With teammates and that teammate more than just teammates, Man,
- 35:14Speaker 1: it's family. To me, that's family. And it's just like
- 35:19Speaker 1: here in Canton, everybody, each class says we're coming back.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Every year we can come back. And when you see
- 35:26Speaker 1: these guys come back, Man, it's more than just football.
- 35:30Speaker 4: Man.
- 35:31Speaker 1: It's great memories, bad memories, but it's togetherness. And that's
- 35:36Speaker 1: that locker room. Outside of the locker room.
- 35:39Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you talked about family.
- 35:42Speaker 4: And as we did some research, we learned that one
- 35:46Speaker 4: thing that you would do is after the seasons, you
- 35:48Speaker 4: would drive all the way back to Texas. Yeah, fifteen
- 35:51Speaker 4: hours maybe longer, Yeah, all the way back.
- 35:55Speaker 3: Yeah, why did you start doing that?
- 35:57Speaker 1: Because it gave me a time, a chance to reflect
- 36:00Speaker 1: over the season, reflect on things I did and things
- 36:05Speaker 1: I didn't do.
- 36:06Speaker 2: That.
- 36:07Speaker 1: I wanted to have that time to myself because during
- 36:09Speaker 1: the football season, man, you're running round you doing this,
- 36:13Speaker 1: doing that, and it allowed me to reflect, allowed me
- 36:18Speaker 1: to drive and listen to one of my favorite bands,
- 36:21Speaker 1: you too for your YouTube.
- 36:23Speaker 2: Call him a huge.
- 36:24Speaker 1: YouTube guy, broy Man, Joshua Tree. Come on, bro, that's
- 36:28Speaker 1: what it's like most guys on Game Baby listening to
- 36:31Speaker 1: some back Then Biggie and all this and that and
- 36:34Speaker 1: some a C d C Metallica. I'm only listen to YouTube.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Bon No, Joshua Tree. Brother, I'm just sitting there to do.
- 36:42Speaker 1: I'm not trying to get it there. I'm already there.
- 36:44Speaker 1: I'm just trying to calm it down, just trying to Yeah,
- 36:49Speaker 1: that was me. So driving back, driving the Texas allowed
- 36:52Speaker 1: me to do that, and I enjoyed it. It was
- 36:55Speaker 1: just peaceful time, man, just from all thentness and all that.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Just to roll the windows down. Man, I'm like driving
- 37:04Speaker 1: on the old Woo. Yes, I enjoyed it.
- 37:10Speaker 3: We're going to take a short break and we'll be
- 37:12Speaker 3: right back that earlier.
- 37:18Speaker 4: You know in the in the pod, you said you
- 37:20Speaker 4: have so much more to do.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Yeah, what did you mean by that?
- 37:24Speaker 4: You know what?
- 37:25Speaker 1: I don't know, but I know there's more for me coming.
- 37:30Speaker 1: I mean, like fence in Minnesota. I'm involved with charities.
- 37:34Speaker 1: My son was born, he was special needs, so we
- 37:37Speaker 1: got involved with a special needs school. We helped him
- 37:39Speaker 1: raise twenty one million dollars and didn't We didn't want
- 37:42Speaker 1: to pay any from it, but we just wanted to
- 37:44Speaker 1: help other families who might have been going through what
- 37:47Speaker 1: we were going through with a special needs child because
- 37:50Speaker 1: we didn't know where which direction to turn. So being
- 37:53Speaker 1: able to do that, man, that just opened the door
- 37:57Speaker 1: for so many other families get involved with the first
- 38:01Speaker 1: tea program, I'm involved with, tal based Army. Uh, just
- 38:06Speaker 1: numerous charities I'm involved in Minnesota. It just allowed me
- 38:10Speaker 1: to give back to the community that gave me so much.
- 38:14Speaker 1: And like I said, there's there's other stuff that's coming.
- 38:17Speaker 1: I don't know yet, but I know that God has
- 38:20Speaker 1: more plan for me, so I just continue on my journey.
- 38:23Speaker 4: So I got a friend of mine that paints his
- 38:26Speaker 4: face yeah for game days, right, And it started with
- 38:29Speaker 4: just this, Yeah, then it kind of goes a little
- 38:32Speaker 4: bit down and around. Then he starts feeling in the blanks.
- 38:36Speaker 4: Now he's got dots on his head, and he just
- 38:38Speaker 4: kept going, Yeah, how did George start? Because you were
- 38:41Speaker 4: one of the first guys that I remember as like
- 38:43Speaker 4: a black dude that was like blacked out underneath the
- 38:47Speaker 4: pace past.
- 38:49Speaker 3: It was so because nobody just starts with the whole thing. Yeah,
- 38:53Speaker 3: so there we go, walk me through the process. Starts
- 38:56Speaker 3: under the eyes.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you know, we just start my eyes. And so.
- 39:02Speaker 1: I had some very this is an interesting defense lineman
- 39:07Speaker 1: for sure. And one guy was from like Florida State,
- 39:10Speaker 1: and uh the name Derrick Alexander, you call him d A.
- 39:15Speaker 2: And so Die goes, Man, you know what we're gonna do.
- 39:17Speaker 1: I'm like, I hope it im. I'm sure it's gonna
- 39:20Speaker 1: be something that I'm not gonna I might may regret.
- 39:23Speaker 1: We're gonna wear fatigus to the home game. I'm like, yeah,
- 39:27Speaker 1: why shouldn't we DA, We're gonna wear for tigus. Then
- 39:29Speaker 1: he goes, you know what we're gonna do. We're gonna
- 39:32Speaker 1: put paint on like like military guys. I'm like, yeah,
- 39:35Speaker 1: why not, DA? So so then we had one guy
- 39:40Speaker 1: from a flight from Missouri. He goes, man, I'm gonna
- 39:45Speaker 1: rub it on my chest. I'm like, yeah, you should.
- 39:48Speaker 1: I'm kind of sitting there watching him. He's rubbing it
- 39:50Speaker 1: like this. One guy just goes across the state with
- 39:53Speaker 1: some marta dude that and as I'm watching them, and
- 39:57Speaker 1: I just kind of got into my eyes.
- 39:58Speaker 2: I'm like, oh my god, the you do what? What?
- 40:02Speaker 2: What is going on?
- 40:04Speaker 1: And then forgot that that rose on my face and
- 40:07Speaker 1: he turned around, Oh look at Johnny Man, that's what
- 40:12Speaker 1: you're talking about. Look at him, but look in the mirror.
- 40:15Speaker 1: So I looked at him like all right, I'm with y'all.
- 40:19Speaker 1: So I go in the game and I got like
- 40:21Speaker 1: three sacks. Man, I'm glad you got to do it.
- 40:25Speaker 1: You're talking about superstit. So me going, you know what,
- 40:31Speaker 1: this right here got me three? What if I do
- 40:34Speaker 1: it all over my I should get four maybe five.
- 40:39Speaker 1: So I don't get four, don't get three, I'm going,
- 40:42Speaker 1: you know what, I gotta do it again. So I
- 40:46Speaker 1: was like, you know what, what if I don't take
- 40:48Speaker 1: a shower for about two days? Hm hmm, I'll try that.
- 40:54Speaker 1: So no shower, Then what if I wear the same
- 40:57Speaker 1: clothes the whole week practice.
- 41:00Speaker 2: So I did that, and I'm like, it is.
- 41:03Speaker 3: This work, this work.
- 41:08Speaker 2: We were just like we would.
- 41:13Speaker 3: I mean, it was just I was just thinking of stuff.
- 41:15Speaker 2: Yeah, just sitting you know what. I'm like, Hey, what was.
- 41:20Speaker 4: The Wallace superstition? You guys came up with? What do
- 41:23Speaker 4: you think the Wallace one was?
- 41:24Speaker 2: Oh, that's the easy one.
- 41:25Speaker 1: Now on game day and there's Mike Tice is witnessed
- 41:31Speaker 1: this one day, so Random McDaniel, Hall of Famer. He
- 41:35Speaker 1: used to get the practice early. So Random was like,
- 41:38Speaker 1: my guy, I would do what he does so he
- 41:40Speaker 1: would get to he would get the games early. So
- 41:42Speaker 1: back then they put the programs in the chairs, and
- 41:45Speaker 1: I'm like, some of these programs have bad juju, some
- 41:50Speaker 1: have good juju. I'm like the guys who have the
- 41:53Speaker 1: most juju, the guys who don't do anything no offense
- 41:57Speaker 1: to them, the kickers and the pawners. So I would
- 41:59Speaker 1: take the guys and just rub them all over me.
- 42:03Speaker 1: And I'm rubbing all over me Random, I'm not paying attention.
- 42:06Speaker 1: Mike Tice walks in the locker room and he's witnessing me.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Just rub them all over to go, what are you doing, Mike?
- 42:11Speaker 1: It got good juju? You want some of this good juju?
- 42:14Speaker 2: And he was so. That was one of my crazy
- 42:20Speaker 2: superstitions man.
- 42:21Speaker 3: And did it work?
- 42:22Speaker 2: Yes?
- 42:22Speaker 3: How long did you do this?
- 42:24Speaker 2: I did it every game? Man. I don't know like
- 42:27Speaker 2: any four five, just some dumb playing.
- 42:34Speaker 3: Most people.
- 42:35Speaker 4: For those that don't know, if you've never been inside
- 42:37Speaker 4: the NFL locker room, each guy has his own superstition
- 42:41Speaker 4: or he has a way of how he gets raised.
- 42:44Speaker 3: Yes, for a game, it might be socks or that,
- 42:49Speaker 3: or some people don't warm up. Some people yes.
- 42:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:52Speaker 1: We had guys who just come in off the street,
- 42:55Speaker 1: put on a shirt, put on his shoulder pads.
- 42:58Speaker 2: I had to pull like water on my shoulder pad. Lose.
- 43:02Speaker 1: We had one guy running around the locker room, go,
- 43:04Speaker 1: nobody can block me and just run around like you
- 43:10Speaker 1: have to say, I'm weird dude running around.
- 43:13Speaker 2: Nobody didn't block me. Nobody. I'm like, okay, I'd respect
- 43:17Speaker 2: everybody doing their own thing.
- 43:19Speaker 3: We're all a little OCD on game day, I will.
- 43:24Speaker 4: I had my own OSD stuff off of OCD stuff
- 43:28Speaker 4: that I used to do, and mine.
- 43:30Speaker 3: Was I got to this.
- 43:31Speaker 4: I was one of the first players to go to
- 43:33Speaker 4: the stadium like I went over with the I went
- 43:35Speaker 4: over with the trainers and the doctors. Yes, I took
- 43:38Speaker 4: a shower, gotten a cold, gotten hot up. I had
- 43:41Speaker 4: a specific trainer take my ankles. I were contacts, so
- 43:45Speaker 4: I had another specific trainer helped me with my contacts.
- 43:48Speaker 4: I waited for Langs to come over. We would go out.
- 43:51Speaker 3: We would have to run.
- 43:51Speaker 4: Two hundred yards. Then I'll have to do certain drills.
- 43:54Speaker 4: He would do certain drills. Then we would play a game,
- 43:58Speaker 4: and then I'd go in. I'd ray, I'd warm up
- 44:01Speaker 4: a little bit, tell some myself my like, no one
- 44:04Speaker 4: can I can guard can't, no one stop me.
- 44:06Speaker 3: I can't. I can't, I can't. I can read it.
- 44:08Speaker 4: Like I was that guy. I just didn't run around
- 44:10Speaker 4: the locker room telling everybody.
- 44:12Speaker 3: I did that.
- 44:13Speaker 4: And then I would hold certain players hands when I prayed.
- 44:17Speaker 4: I would it would have to be certain certain people
- 44:19Speaker 4: when I prayed. And then I would run out on
- 44:20Speaker 4: the field and then I would take the grass like
- 44:23Speaker 4: in Gladiator. Yes, I would take it and I would
- 44:26Speaker 4: sniff it even on turf, like I would. I would
- 44:29Speaker 4: sniff it. Let's go, And that was then I was ready.
- 44:35Speaker 4: That was like my routine.
- 44:36Speaker 1: I had another one, which was I didn't want nobody
- 44:38Speaker 1: to touch me before the game, Like we had to
- 44:41Speaker 1: go over out there shake hands, like I can't. I
- 44:44Speaker 1: can't shake your hand. You're trying to take my juju.
- 44:47Speaker 1: I just worked on me juju in there. Down, let
- 44:51Speaker 1: your hand. I'm like, I can't do it. So but
- 44:55Speaker 1: everybody wh team knew it. They go, man, Johnny on
- 44:57Speaker 1: like the touch.
- 45:00Speaker 2: Don't say the.
- 45:02Speaker 1: Enemy. This dude could be my best friend over there.
- 45:06Speaker 1: I'm like, I ain't talking to him. Hey you Hey,
- 45:11Speaker 1: what this game right now?
- 45:12Speaker 2: You the enemy.
- 45:13Speaker 1: You're trying to take what we want here, we're Vikings.
- 45:17Speaker 1: They're coming to pillages from you. Do we take it
- 45:19Speaker 1: from you? Ravaging pillage with Ragna Ragnaw Lockberg coming bro.
- 45:25Speaker 4: It's a great show too, great show, Great show, Vikings,
- 45:29Speaker 4: great show. I'm trying to think my I had a
- 45:33Speaker 4: little bit of a pregame like college, I had to
- 45:36Speaker 4: do like I had bands and I had to do
- 45:38Speaker 4: arms like that was like my things. I just wanted
- 45:41Speaker 4: to have arms gonna swollen. Had to in college. Then
- 45:45Speaker 4: got your league not so much. Then you kind of
- 45:48Speaker 4: have like these pregame rituals. But I think my biggest
- 45:52Speaker 4: thing was that I wanted to always rode the same
- 45:54Speaker 4: bus to the stadium. Whenever we drove bus is always
- 45:58Speaker 4: robust too, and then I had to listen to certain
- 46:01Speaker 4: music going into it.
- 46:03Speaker 3: I usually like the coach on the defensive.
- 46:06Speaker 4: Side that threw the worst, the worst ball, because DB's
- 46:10Speaker 4: never get like a good solid just throwing it right
- 46:12Speaker 4: to me. So I always wanted somebody to throw like
- 46:14Speaker 4: a terrible, terrible, terrible throws to me because then you know,
- 46:18Speaker 4: you work on catching bad ball.
- 46:19Speaker 3: Yeah, it makes you better, It makes you better. Come on, yeah, yeah, because.
- 46:23Speaker 4: DB's you got to get used to catching a back bone.
- 46:25Speaker 4: So if you don't, you think it's just gonna be pretty,
- 46:27Speaker 4: you never do it never goes to.
- 46:31Speaker 2: Go to receiver.
- 46:32Speaker 4: It there we go. So that's why that was like
- 46:34Speaker 4: a thing for me. And I did my own little
- 46:36Speaker 4: drills and then I'd run. But yeah, it was not
- 46:39Speaker 4: as much as what you guys were into. I'm very
- 46:41Speaker 4: shocked there, da.
- 46:42Speaker 1: I mean for me office and Linan a different defense
- 46:44Speaker 1: line office and Linman. You know that they they act
- 46:49Speaker 1: off movement, they moving, but us we move off, we
- 46:53Speaker 1: react off movement.
- 46:54Speaker 2: Yes, so we all we.
- 46:56Speaker 1: Sit there and do hand slaps and stuff and all
- 46:58Speaker 1: this stuff we work on get off. You know who's
- 47:02Speaker 1: who's coming up of all the fastest. It's all about
- 47:04Speaker 1: just be high energy. You just look intense like you
- 47:08Speaker 1: know we our coach Turli, he wouldn't show you not
- 47:13Speaker 1: all the time reels of plays held go.
- 47:16Speaker 2: We are like gazelles.
- 47:18Speaker 1: We have to run and we have to pee you
- 47:22Speaker 1: while we were running, poop while we're running. We are
- 47:25Speaker 1: like alligating the crocodile. We gotta grab the quarterback and
- 47:28Speaker 1: spin him down because he's trying to throw the ball.
- 47:31Speaker 1: So we are part of nature, but we're a different
- 47:33Speaker 1: part of nature, and we gotta remember that. You get zelles,
- 47:36Speaker 1: you're always running, always moving, never sitting. Steal I believed it.
- 47:43Speaker 4: Man mal Rushmore. There's four You get four people. You
- 47:47Speaker 4: get four picks of people that have helped you become
- 47:51Speaker 4: the man you are today.
- 47:52Speaker 3: Who would those four people be?
- 47:55Speaker 1: Oh my god, thereould be uh probably Dennis Green him
- 48:00Speaker 1: a chance to really play the way I wanted to play.
- 48:04Speaker 2: He knew it even before I knew it.
- 48:06Speaker 3: Did Dinnis Green tell you that?
- 48:08Speaker 1: Well, No, he and through John Turlink, he did. John
- 48:11Speaker 1: Thurlink was like, he goes, We're going to allow you
- 48:15Speaker 1: to be you. And I'm like, what do you mean?
- 48:16Speaker 1: He goes, We're gonna let you be you. And that's
- 48:20Speaker 1: how we presented it. And practice, I tried to perfect
- 48:26Speaker 1: my game in practice. I went forward till tell me,
- 48:29Speaker 1: if I can't do it in practice, I can't do
- 48:31Speaker 1: it in the game. And so he allowed me to
- 48:33Speaker 1: do that. So he, Dennis Green did that. My mom
- 48:39Speaker 1: who basically when I quit football in high school because
- 48:42Speaker 1: I got tired of hitch hiking trying to trying to
- 48:44Speaker 1: play football, and she set me down, go why do
- 48:48Speaker 1: you want to quit? I said, I just want to
- 48:49Speaker 1: hang out my friends. I'm tired of trying to catch
- 48:51Speaker 1: a ride home. And so she took me over to
- 48:54Speaker 1: the junior how to watch those kids who were playing basketball.
- 48:57Speaker 1: She goes, that's basically said, baby, that's what you want
- 48:59Speaker 1: to do. You have all the time in the world
- 49:02Speaker 1: to do that. And so I went back to football.
- 49:04Speaker 1: So my mom coach Green h and probably be Paul Wiggins,
- 49:10Speaker 1: who kept me on the team my rookie year when
- 49:13Speaker 1: everybody else said, now you're you're I don't see anything.
- 49:17Speaker 1: Paul Wiggins, who was the head coach at Cleveland, the
- 49:21Speaker 1: head coach I think at Stanford. He was that guy.
- 49:26Speaker 1: And Paul was soft spoken even though he told me
- 49:29Speaker 1: hang on. He was the reason that I probably made
- 49:33Speaker 1: the vikings and be those people. But man, I could
- 49:37Speaker 1: go on on my agent, who who is Who's actually
- 49:43Speaker 1: here because of another player, Eric Allen? Yeah he's Gary
- 49:48Speaker 1: is here to see Eric. And Gary helped me immensely
- 49:53Speaker 1: man from not just the football part of it, but
- 49:59Speaker 1: financial telling me, hey, you know, hey, you need this. Yes,
- 50:03Speaker 1: So those people for me and now my wife who
- 50:09Speaker 1: I married and being retired, has really been the one
- 50:15Speaker 1: for me. Just my best friend, first time I can
- 50:19Speaker 1: talk to. She's not gonna hold back and that's what
- 50:22Speaker 1: I appreciate. She's straightforward and for me.
- 50:26Speaker 2: Man, oh beautiful. Yeah, it's a good mountain. Thank you.
- 50:31Speaker 4: That's a good mountain.
- 50:32Speaker 2: Rushmore. Thank you.
- 50:33Speaker 4: Hey man, that's that's it. You you off the hot seat.
- 50:36Speaker 4: I thank you. We can't thank you enough for just
- 50:38Speaker 4: helping us out and just really pouring in as Room
- 50:41Speaker 4: said it earlier, Master storyteller, you.
- 50:45Speaker 3: Are spectac tack it.
- 50:48Speaker 1: That's well Thank you, guys. I've watched you guys, and
- 50:52Speaker 1: I appreciate what you're doing. Uh, when you guys are
- 50:55Speaker 1: doing this, man, you guys, you're not looking like you're
- 50:58Speaker 1: mad about you. You have smiles on your faces.
- 51:01Speaker 2: Man.
