- 0:51Speaker 2: but surely we'll get there. You know we're doing we're
- 0:54Speaker 2: doing some other things though we're thinking about other stuff
- 0:56Speaker 2: at the same time. But as you know, when we
- 1:00Speaker 2: do something special on this podcast, whether it's just me
- 1:04Speaker 2: or somebody else coming along, as you can see, we
- 1:07Speaker 2: throw up the OX signal. Okay, I was before I
- 1:12Speaker 2: tell everybody what we're doing. If it as if they
- 1:14Speaker 2: don't already know what's good man, they.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Think good Man, think good Man. Thank you for having
- 1:20Speaker 3: me man once again. Man, good to.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Be here, no problem man.
- 1:24Speaker 2: And so for those who are watching and listening. Twenty
- 1:29Speaker 2: twenty six is thirty years since nineteen ninety six, and
- 1:34Speaker 2: we've seen it.
- 1:35Speaker 1: A million times over and over and over again.
- 1:38Speaker 2: When you when somebody puts up that picture of all
- 1:41Speaker 2: the hip hop albums that dropped in ninety six, it's
- 1:45Speaker 2: crazy because it's a lot of albums that most people
- 1:49Speaker 2: consider classics, a lot of albums. So what I thought
- 1:54Speaker 2: of doing was, Okay, well, maybe I should re review
- 1:58Speaker 2: some of these albums from nineteen ninety six. But then
- 2:03Speaker 2: I started to think about it and I was like, well,
- 2:05Speaker 2: I can't do all of them. I don't have that
- 2:07Speaker 2: kind of time, So maybe I could pick twelve. So
- 2:10Speaker 2: once a month you will get a special like this
- 2:13Speaker 2: where we'll highlight an album from nineteen ninety six, talk
- 2:17Speaker 2: about it reminisce, break down some of the things we
- 2:21Speaker 2: like or even dislike about the albums, and how do
- 2:25Speaker 2: these albums sound today.
- 2:27Speaker 1: That's the most important part.
- 2:29Speaker 2: So every month I'm going to have a guest with
- 2:32Speaker 2: me to get another perspective.
- 2:35Speaker 1: On the album.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Also, I want you to go in the comments section
- 2:39Speaker 2: and give your review not only of the time if
- 2:42Speaker 2: you was outside or even the first time you heard it,
- 2:44Speaker 2: even if you weren't around when it dropped, but also
- 2:47Speaker 2: how you feel about the album today, So the first
- 2:53Speaker 2: album in this series of twelve once a month, remember
- 2:56Speaker 2: that we're gonna do a two for right, niggas got
- 3:00Speaker 2: garbage down the well, Okay, that's what we're doing too,
- 3:04Speaker 2: because this is probably the most important thing that happened
- 3:10Speaker 2: amongst all the great things that happened in ninety six.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Tupac's you coord and and I'm not gonna give you
- 3:16Speaker 2: a detailed timeline. You're gonna put that in the comments section,
- 3:19Speaker 2: you know if if I'm off, but I believe Tupac
- 3:24Speaker 2: was released, if not early ninety six, definitely right before
- 3:30Speaker 2: it signed to death Row, got right in the booth.
- 3:35Speaker 2: We've all heard the story, started recording like crazy, working
- 3:38Speaker 2: with all the death Row cats like crazy. Then all
- 3:41Speaker 2: of a sudden we got the first of two offerings, right,
- 3:46Speaker 2: but one dropped in February and the other one dropped
- 3:50Speaker 2: in September. And in between all of that, all of
- 3:53Speaker 2: the things, all them documentaries you watch, whether it's on YouTube,
- 3:57Speaker 2: and movies and stuff like that. Keep in mind, this
- 3:59Speaker 2: part of Tupac's career all happened in one year in
- 4:04Speaker 2: ninety six. Before we even got to the end, he
- 4:09Speaker 2: was already gone crazy.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Two albums platinum.
- 4:17Speaker 2: I believe it's the first time in hip hop platinum
- 4:20Speaker 2: within the first year.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Now we know, in ninety eight, DMX came aboard and
- 4:23Speaker 1: did it.
- 4:24Speaker 2: I think what was special about what DMX did in
- 4:26Speaker 2: ninety eight was the fact that he was a new
- 4:28Speaker 2: artist who dropped two albums in nineteen ninety eight went platinum.
- 4:32Speaker 2: But POC was first, and it was crazy, all of
- 4:36Speaker 2: this in one year. So let's just start at the
- 4:40Speaker 2: top with the first album. I Don't Know Why my
- 4:45Speaker 2: Phone is spazin. First album is all Eyes on Me,
- 4:51Speaker 2: was dropped in February February thirteenth, nineteen ninety six.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Twenty seven songs.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Obviously, some of those might be scared tearing in two
- 5:01Speaker 2: hours and twelve minutes long. Now for somebody out there
- 5:07Speaker 2: who's used to these quick albums, you might be like, God, damn,
- 5:09Speaker 2: what y'all was listening to that? Like we were into
- 5:13Speaker 2: the double albums because we didn't get him that often,
- 5:16Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. So for POC, me Against
- 5:20Speaker 2: the World was out, he went to jail.
- 5:21Speaker 1: All of that stuff.
- 5:22Speaker 2: He was in prison, right, okay, and he probably had
- 5:26Speaker 2: some other stuff, so he figured him and Death Row figured, Yo,
- 5:30Speaker 2: were just gonna drop a double album out the gate.
- 5:32Speaker 1: So I'm gonna come to you about this.
- 5:35Speaker 2: When you first heard about a new Tupac album or
- 5:39Speaker 2: eyes on Me on the way?
- 5:42Speaker 1: Were you a POC fan, a big fan? Were you
- 5:45Speaker 1: anticipating this album?
- 5:46Speaker 2: What was Tupac for you prior to the release of
- 5:50Speaker 2: all Eyes on Me?
- 5:52Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 5:53Speaker 4: Man, I thought Tupac was good. You know, it's crazy,
- 5:59Speaker 4: It's like, oh, Yo, that's Tupac. He was just within
- 6:05Speaker 4: to me, the zeitgeist of hip hop. Like you know,
- 6:10Speaker 4: I wasn't a super fan, and we'll get to that
- 6:15Speaker 4: and a few, you know, but I always thought Tupac's
- 6:19Speaker 4: music was good, like Brenda's Got a Baby.
- 6:23Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying, Dear Mama.
- 6:26Speaker 4: You know, he was just within the within the zeit guys,
- 6:30Speaker 4: Doug life, he was just within the in the zeit guys.
- 6:34Speaker 4: So you know, when all the drama was happening, it's
- 6:39Speaker 4: just like, Yo, that's that's pop. And then you know
- 6:43Speaker 4: when the when the word because no Internet y'all.
- 6:47Speaker 3: You know, so when the word was getting no.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Internet, and mind you you know, like yo, I was,
- 6:54Speaker 4: I was fifteen when all of this was what's happening.
- 6:58Speaker 4: So no Internet fifteen, but rumors and if you're like,
- 7:03Speaker 4: if you you're in the hip hop culture and you
- 7:07Speaker 4: love hip hop, like the word was getting around so
- 7:11Speaker 4: and this is what I'm gonna need you to help.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Me with Vegas.
- 7:14Speaker 4: So when the word got out that he was dropping
- 7:18Speaker 4: a double album, my take on it, I'm thinking back,
- 7:25Speaker 4: was oh, well, I didn't know that that had been
- 7:28Speaker 4: done before in hip hop.
- 7:31Speaker 3: So that was one and then two again, it was.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Just like, oh, yeah, well, you know it's pop, so
- 7:38Speaker 4: you know he gotta yo, guys show out like yo,
- 7:42Speaker 4: he dropping a double Like that's.
- 7:44Speaker 3: How you feel, you know.
- 7:47Speaker 4: But yeah, Like my initial thoughts regarding Tupac was like, yo,
- 7:51Speaker 4: he made he made good music. You know, he was
- 7:54Speaker 4: something that something to put on. Thought he was dope,
- 7:58Speaker 4: you know, I just thought it Tupac was good. Like
- 8:03Speaker 4: now we'll say in comparison to like Nas or like
- 8:12Speaker 4: what was going on with like Wu Tang Clan. Like
- 8:19Speaker 4: I will say that Tupac to me, it was almost
- 8:26Speaker 4: like he was a little old school but he was young,
- 8:30Speaker 4: so it's like, yo, well he been around. So like
- 8:34Speaker 4: I said, he was in the zeitgeis like, oh, well,
- 8:36Speaker 4: that's that's prop right, you know. But it's like Me
- 8:42Speaker 4: against the World, which was which was dope. But the
- 8:46Speaker 4: idea of the double album that immediately struck me as okay,
- 8:51Speaker 4: well that's different, you know, and that's kind of that.
- 8:56Speaker 4: I know that wasn't the slang at the time, but
- 8:57Speaker 4: that's extra, that's that's like a big deal, right, well,
- 9:02Speaker 4: that that's how I saw it when I first heard about.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Yeah, if if there was a double album before this,
- 9:10Speaker 2: I think the difference is it wasn't high profile. It
- 9:13Speaker 2: wasn't a high profile artists like Tupac, like Tupac was
- 9:18Speaker 2: super popular, and not not because because you're right, he
- 9:23Speaker 2: was a part of the Zeigeys, but I think because
- 9:27Speaker 2: Hit Him Out, Hit Him Up was already.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Outy right, Okay, yeah, I believe. So.
- 9:35Speaker 3: I don't remember.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Because I was I was at Morgan when this drop
- 9:40Speaker 2: and it was my second it was my freshman year,
- 9:43Speaker 2: but my the second semester when it dropped.
- 9:46Speaker 1: When I heard Hit Him Up, I.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Was home in good old B Street in Brooklyn, and
- 9:54Speaker 2: I remember asking the DJ, DJ Goldfinger, like you know
- 9:58Speaker 2: what what, Like, what the fuck is that? So I
- 10:01Speaker 2: feel like I heard hit him up then, but it
- 10:06Speaker 2: was early, like there wasn't no video or nothing like that.
- 10:10Speaker 2: So I don't know, like I'm not saying he recorded
- 10:13Speaker 2: from jailor no shit like that. I'm just saying I
- 10:16Speaker 2: remember hearing it before this album dropped. So I mean,
- 10:19Speaker 2: for all I know, it could have been January of
- 10:22Speaker 2: nineteen ninety six or something like that. But I felt
- 10:29Speaker 2: like because Tupac with all the controversy, and you know,
- 10:34Speaker 2: he got shot before, and like he just had a
- 10:37Speaker 2: lot going on. And also he was a film star,
- 10:40Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, Like his name was just
- 10:44Speaker 2: higher profile than most, especially for the controversy. So I
- 10:48Speaker 2: felt like if there was a double album before Park,
- 10:53Speaker 2: I think only some people would know, right, Like, it
- 10:56Speaker 2: got to be somebody like and this ain't a.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Punch at them like a ball and m J what
- 11:05Speaker 1: do you call it? MJG?
- 11:07Speaker 2: Right, Like somebody might say they did it or too
- 11:10Speaker 2: short did it or something like that. But I feel like,
- 11:13Speaker 2: you know how this happens once somebody who's of a
- 11:16Speaker 2: higher stature in their celebrity does it. It's almost as
- 11:22Speaker 2: if people say it started with them, okay, and then
- 11:27Speaker 2: also you know, it's a lot of controversy with all
- 11:29Speaker 2: this stuff that was on here, you know what I'm saying, Like, well,
- 11:34Speaker 2: we'll get into it, because there's plenty of it. But
- 11:37Speaker 2: I know, for me, the first time I heard or
- 11:41Speaker 2: I heard about this coming out, I wasn't the biggest
- 11:44Speaker 2: Tupac fan anyway.
- 11:47Speaker 1: I love I get around.
- 11:48Speaker 2: I remember buying that single I love Brenda's Got a
- 11:52Speaker 2: Baby Troublesome, like I mean, not troublesome.
- 11:58Speaker 1: I forget the songs, but whatever.
- 12:01Speaker 2: I wasn't a fan of Pac until I heard Me
- 12:04Speaker 2: Against the World, because then I was like, okay, And
- 12:08Speaker 2: it wasn't even just him because I liked Pac. I
- 12:11Speaker 2: didn't like the way he stacked his vocals. It was
- 12:13Speaker 2: annoying to me because it just sounds like tupacs get it.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Rapping at the same time. And I found it so annoying.
- 12:22Speaker 2: And I thought he had a voice anyway, like he
- 12:25Speaker 2: didn't need to do that, or at least, you know,
- 12:28Speaker 2: lower one of those voices so you could still stack
- 12:30Speaker 2: it without it sounded like Tupacs rapping at the same time.
- 12:34Speaker 2: So I always used to bother me. But when I
- 12:37Speaker 2: heard a lot of the songs for me against the world.
- 12:41Speaker 2: You know, I liked him, but then he went to
- 12:43Speaker 2: jail and all of that. So it was almost as
- 12:46Speaker 2: if the only way we were talking about Tupac is
- 12:49Speaker 2: because he was speaking from jail and certain things he
- 12:52Speaker 2: had to say and the whole robbery thing and.
- 12:54Speaker 1: All of that.
- 12:55Speaker 2: So for me, it was kind of like I messed
- 12:59Speaker 2: with him, But I wasn't like this huge fan. But
- 13:02Speaker 2: I was like, once he I'm like he outside and
- 13:06Speaker 2: I saw that cover and I knew he was with
- 13:08Speaker 2: Death Row. I was like, oh, his nigga about to
- 13:13Speaker 2: start something like I got to hear it and the
- 13:17Speaker 2: crazy part is.
- 13:19Speaker 1: And we can we can kind of get into.
- 13:23Speaker 2: The album while talking about the atmosphere of ninety six
- 13:27Speaker 2: as far as music. But when I heard ambitions of
- 13:32Speaker 2: a riding on the campus of Morgan State, I didn't
- 13:36Speaker 2: have the album. There was a dude from Sacramento a
- 13:39Speaker 2: shout out to Zoe like he was like the West
- 13:42Speaker 2: Coast representative and right so and all the all the talk.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Like he talked, he talked it and all of that.
- 13:50Speaker 1: So he like, he know we from New York.
- 13:53Speaker 2: He like, yo, you need this blah blah blah, and
- 13:56Speaker 2: I remember he played that and I was like, this
- 14:00Speaker 2: shit sound crazy right, Like it's like Tupac broke out
- 14:04Speaker 2: of jail. Like it didn't sound like he made music.
- 14:09Speaker 2: It was just like you thought he was in the box.
- 14:12Speaker 2: But then he creep up from under the car somewhere
- 14:15Speaker 2: like I won't deny. I'm like, oh yeah, Like so
- 14:22Speaker 2: I thought that was dope and than the obviously the
- 14:25Speaker 2: Redman joint with Method Man. I heard that and I'm like,
- 14:28Speaker 2: oh man, they got and he got like a real
- 14:30Speaker 2: hip hop joint with Method Man and Redman, Like let
- 14:35Speaker 2: me listen. So I when the album's out, you go
- 14:40Speaker 2: pick it up, like what's the what's the story with
- 14:42Speaker 2: you in that album?
- 14:44Speaker 1: And when you finally listen.
- 14:45Speaker 4: Yeah, man, so I gotta like you gave your your take,
- 14:49Speaker 4: like being on Morgan campus and there's that that brother
- 14:53Speaker 4: Zoe that was like yo, so like my block, like
- 15:01Speaker 4: I come from a Tupac block. Let me put it
- 15:05Speaker 4: that way, like like you know I mentioned earlier, like
- 15:09Speaker 4: I wasn't a super fan. I just you know, thought
- 15:11Speaker 4: Tupac was Tupac, right, but there was brothers, you know
- 15:17Speaker 4: what I'm saying. Shouts out to King, shouts out to
- 15:19Speaker 4: tink like there was brothers hip hop heads devoted, like yo,
- 15:26Speaker 4: everybody else is good, but Tupac is the best. That
- 15:32Speaker 4: was like the energy and it's just like okay, you
- 15:38Speaker 4: know what I mean, Like that's how y'all feel.
- 15:40Speaker 3: That's cool.
- 15:41Speaker 4: But you know it would be this constant talk of yo,
- 15:45Speaker 4: I'm telling you like pop pop. So then when I
- 15:50Speaker 4: heard it or started listening to it, you know, I
- 15:54Speaker 4: was at my best friend's house rest in Peace to
- 15:57Speaker 4: Jeff like he had the album first, and I just
- 16:05Speaker 4: remember listening like, yo, this is this is different. It's dope.
- 16:15Speaker 4: It it's crazy, and like it was punching through like
- 16:27Speaker 4: he we I knew that Tupop Tupac was here, was
- 16:33Speaker 4: here to play, like you said, I'm outside right like
- 16:38Speaker 4: you know, anybody else was getting their stuff off and
- 16:41Speaker 4: talk and rapping. I'm here now, Like that was my
- 16:45Speaker 4: initial thought from from the album listening through to it,
- 16:53Speaker 4: like you know again, like I was fifteen, so there
- 16:56Speaker 4: was a lot of a lot of things, like you know,
- 16:58Speaker 4: I had to just admit, like there's a lot of
- 17:01Speaker 4: player things going on that I wasn't I wasn't ready
- 17:04Speaker 4: for it yet, y'all, Like you know, I was getting
- 17:07Speaker 4: put up on on game like it's this is more
- 17:11Speaker 4: than just about some some rapping, like there's some some.
- 17:14Speaker 3: Real player things going on. But like you said, like
- 17:18Speaker 3: the method man got my mom made up, I.
- 17:20Speaker 4: Was blown, like I was like yo, yo, he got
- 17:23Speaker 4: something with meth like oh, red Man on it too.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Like yo.
- 17:27Speaker 4: So the initial thought was this is crazy and that
- 17:32Speaker 4: thought of yo were part kind of old school that
- 17:36Speaker 4: was out the window, like by the time listening to this,
- 17:41Speaker 4: like oh nah, like the like I'm I'm amongst my contemporaries,
- 17:49Speaker 4: you know what I'm saying, Like Yo, I'm I'm really that.
- 17:53Speaker 2: You know, man, let me ask you this, but do
- 17:55Speaker 2: you think like being your age, he came across as
- 18:02Speaker 2: an old school guy because he kind of made his.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Mark much earlier than this.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Then he was kind of gone for minutes. So this
- 18:11Speaker 2: Death road Ride was like fresh.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Fresh that was like exactly, that's a whole new sound,
- 18:19Speaker 4: whole new sound, whole new look like you said that
- 18:22Speaker 4: out that album cover then with the chain that was
- 18:26Speaker 4: not Me against the World, Did Mama Me against the World.
- 18:30Speaker 3: It was dope and there was some you know, aggressive
- 18:33Speaker 3: cuts on it.
- 18:35Speaker 4: But I will say that that album was a little
- 18:39Speaker 4: more introspective, and I'll say introspective. I don't want to
- 18:46Speaker 4: say modest, because the braggadoc was on there too, but
- 18:51Speaker 4: you could kind of tell like he was he was
- 18:55Speaker 4: down this oh it's up, like it was up and
- 19:01Speaker 4: the whole vibe of it, like thinking back on it
- 19:04Speaker 4: now Vegas, Like Yo, you you ever see that skit
- 19:08Speaker 4: with with with Mike Epps, like when he's talking about
- 19:12Speaker 4: pot walking through Vegas, walking through the the casino.
- 19:18Speaker 1: That strut the Jefferson.
- 19:21Speaker 3: That's what this whole album sound like.
- 19:24Speaker 4: That's the sound of his album, like Yo, up Up,
- 19:27Speaker 4: I'm on ten and like yo, whoever want what? Like
- 19:32Speaker 4: he rapped and approached the music like he was the best,
- 19:40Speaker 4: Like yo, y'all shouldn't have y'all let me back out?
- 19:45Speaker 4: Oh I say less like that was definitely say less
- 19:52Speaker 4: energy man. So that's what I got from it again,
- 19:57Speaker 4: like him doing something like you know, a big big
- 20:00Speaker 4: Wu Tang fan.
- 20:01Speaker 3: So him doing songs with.
- 20:03Speaker 4: Method Man, and then later on, you know, he's got
- 20:07Speaker 4: to bring the pain joint, you know what I mean?
- 20:09Speaker 3: Later on where.
- 20:10Speaker 4: He's like he's basically interpolating.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Method Man's hook.
- 20:19Speaker 4: It's like, yo, he he in it like it's that
- 20:23Speaker 4: like I said, that whole old school like he been
- 20:26Speaker 4: around since like juice and everything. Right, that was like
- 20:33Speaker 4: what that was only what uh uh what four years ago?
- 20:37Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 20:38Speaker 4: Like in the context of that, it feels like so
- 20:42Speaker 4: much time. I guess when you were you're that young.
- 20:46Speaker 3: But yeah, man, it all that went out the door.
- 20:49Speaker 3: He's like no, I was like, no contemporary.
- 20:53Speaker 4: He's in with what is going on right now and
- 20:56Speaker 4: he has his own like sound and style, you know
- 21:00Speaker 4: what I mean.
- 21:01Speaker 3: That was just as dope as abody else.
- 21:03Speaker 4: So that's what I you know, initially my initial thoughts
- 21:07Speaker 4: on how it how the album hit me.
- 21:10Speaker 2: That's what's that's what's so crazy to think about with
- 21:14Speaker 2: with this album and him coming back like like you
- 21:17Speaker 2: were saying, he came. It's almost as if Tupac grabbed
- 21:24Speaker 2: the attention of hip hop like with this album and
- 21:28Speaker 2: coming back, because typically when a dude get locked up
- 21:32Speaker 2: and they not really releasing any you know, new material
- 21:35Speaker 2: or yo, I worked on this album before I went
- 21:37Speaker 2: to prison and he go and I think some of
- 21:41Speaker 2: that was me against the world because he was locked
- 21:43Speaker 2: up while them videos were dropping, so that helped. Ironically,
- 21:48Speaker 2: that had a lot of momentum for somebody who was
- 21:50Speaker 2: currently in prison. But I think it's the same thing
- 21:54Speaker 2: as the Great Adventures of Selick Rick, like how that
- 21:57Speaker 2: timeline works with It's like, yeah, he was out, he
- 22:00Speaker 2: was around, but really at the time that that album
- 22:04Speaker 2: was really getting accolades, he was already getting ready to
- 22:07Speaker 2: go in a box, if not already there, you know
- 22:09Speaker 2: what I'm saying. So his next couple of projects, he
- 22:13Speaker 2: was clearly behind bars, whereas with Tupac between Me Against
- 22:18Speaker 2: the World kind of keeping him in people's minds and
- 22:23Speaker 2: hearts in some ways, right because songs like dead Mama's
- 22:26Speaker 2: dropping and you know he in prison and then you
- 22:29Speaker 2: find out that his mother was in prison and pregnant
- 22:32Speaker 2: with him. Like it's a lot of poetic stuff going
- 22:36Speaker 2: on here with such an introspective artists. But like you said,
- 22:42Speaker 2: if you've never watched Juice before, like I just said,
- 22:47Speaker 2: Me against the World, you remember Bishop before that, Like
- 22:50Speaker 2: I like Bishop, you know what I'm saying. One of
- 22:52Speaker 2: the friends blah blah blah, theygaint chased, he's tired of it. Well,
- 22:56Speaker 2: he was the other Bishop when he came out of prison.
- 23:00Speaker 2: And that's almost not even a joke, because that's why
- 23:02Speaker 2: everybody kept saying, what all the distance, Like, yo, he
- 23:04Speaker 2: think he bishop like you know what I'm saying, he
- 23:06Speaker 2: believe in his character, But yeah, I thought it.
- 23:11Speaker 1: I think also it's significant because.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Everything we know that happened in ninety six, Tupac was
- 23:19Speaker 2: able to come out and just jump right in the
- 23:22Speaker 2: number one spot, Like you know what I'm saying, before
- 23:26Speaker 2: he was a part of the zeigeis this time he
- 23:30Speaker 2: was on the main stage. Like no, you heard what
- 23:34Speaker 2: Pock said. That's it's kind of what it was real
- 23:38Speaker 2: quick hit him up. Came out on June of nineteen
- 23:42Speaker 2: ninety six. So what I'm because I was trying to
- 23:45Speaker 2: pin me being home versus being and be more. June
- 23:49Speaker 2: makes more sense because that would place me back in
- 23:52Speaker 2: Brooklyn in order to hear the song you know, in
- 23:56Speaker 2: the what you call it? And then obviously later the
- 23:59Speaker 2: video dropped. But let's talk about the album. I like
- 24:05Speaker 2: how you said, like it was just a whole different sound.
- 24:08Speaker 2: And I think what people need to understand first and
- 24:10Speaker 2: foremost from Tupac, he was born and raised for the
- 24:15Speaker 2: most part in New York City, have a lot of
- 24:18Speaker 2: family in Jersey, went to the performing Arts school and
- 24:22Speaker 2: be more than was out mostly in the Oakland area.
- 24:26Speaker 2: But you know, CALLI in general claimed that for the
- 24:30Speaker 2: most part. But the influences is why this album to
- 24:35Speaker 2: me is so diverse. That because I think it's not
- 24:39Speaker 2: just and he was saying this also, but I think
- 24:43Speaker 2: some people will look at this as a West Coast album.
- 24:47Speaker 2: But Tupac really wasn't just the West Coast guy, he
- 24:51Speaker 2: said it. But you know, all of those influences kind
- 24:55Speaker 2: of come across. You know what I'm saying, because we
- 24:57Speaker 2: heard some West Coast albums. If you heard Gen, you
- 25:02Speaker 2: gotta turn on a switch if you're from the East Coast,
- 25:04Speaker 2: Like all right, this ain't this ain't booming back, This
- 25:07Speaker 2: ain't hey nah, this is straight you know what I'm saying.
- 25:10Speaker 4: This even back then like ice cream, like right, it's like, yo, man,
- 25:21Speaker 4: in retrospect, I can say this now. You know, I
- 25:24Speaker 4: probably wasn't mature enough to really articulated back then, But
- 25:33Speaker 4: after listening to it again, this sounds like an East
- 25:39Speaker 4: Coast dude. But now I'm on the West Coast getting
- 25:44Speaker 4: money and I'm out here like you.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Just said, like the Ice qbe opposite, like where ice
- 25:53Speaker 2: Q went and worked with the Bomb Squad, which was
- 25:55Speaker 2: East Coast public enemy sound. Yeah, talk is like like
- 26:01Speaker 2: fully embracing the West and a lot of songs on
- 26:05Speaker 2: here obviously, but it's clear he's not completely a West
- 26:11Speaker 2: Coast cat in his delivery and things like that.
- 26:14Speaker 1: He's unique.
- 26:16Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, Like I think a lot of you
- 26:22Speaker 4: know what, as far as the themes of the album,
- 26:27Speaker 4: I wrote a few down you know, all eyes on Me.
- 26:30Speaker 3: Has got the got the bravado. You know, got the bravado.
- 26:34Speaker 4: Uh. Competitive as far as in the hip hop space,
- 26:39Speaker 4: like yo, I'm here to compete. Like I also think
- 26:44Speaker 4: like timely, you know, like Yo, I'm in I'm in
- 26:49Speaker 4: the moment.
- 26:51Speaker 3: Like that's why, like yo, you see me.
- 26:54Speaker 4: Rocking with like the East Coast dudes that I like,
- 26:58Speaker 4: like like Yo, I'm a I'm gonna do something with
- 27:01Speaker 4: meth and Redman and then later on in the album
- 27:05Speaker 4: like I'm gonna do something like No More Pain.
- 27:08Speaker 3: Well I'm like, you know, using Methic Man's cook So
- 27:11Speaker 3: it's like Yo, I'm sitting back in the joint and
- 27:14Speaker 3: I'm listening.
- 27:14Speaker 5: It's like YoY I like like, Yo, damn Yo, I'll
- 27:18Speaker 5: rock with them, like so you could tell like yo,
- 27:22Speaker 5: he he's definitely like hip hop, like it's it's in him.
- 27:28Speaker 3: But like like I was saying, like, oh, like oh, y'all.
- 27:32Speaker 4: Gonna get me this bread and y'all gonna support me,
- 27:36Speaker 4: and like, Yo, I got you, I got your back,
- 27:38Speaker 4: Like Yo, do you.
- 27:41Speaker 3: All right say say less? Like That's what I'm gonna do.
- 27:45Speaker 3: So you got the provado the competition, you know.
- 27:50Speaker 4: And of course I think with this album, just a
- 27:54Speaker 4: lot of game, man, just a lot of a lot
- 27:57Speaker 4: of game, you know.
- 27:58Speaker 2: I didn't realize that going back, I was like, what
- 28:00Speaker 2: is all these sexy songs on here? Like I don't
- 28:03Speaker 2: remember this, you know, I remember one or two, but
- 28:07Speaker 2: I'm like there's a lot.
- 28:08Speaker 3: On this jo Yo all about you joint man?
- 28:13Speaker 2: Oh that classic for me. Soon as I heard it,
- 28:18Speaker 2: I was like, now he talking about language.
- 28:20Speaker 4: That's why I'm gonna say, I know Vegas, I know
- 28:22Speaker 4: what some of the some of the game on here.
- 28:25Speaker 3: I'm like, yo, I know I know Vegas. It definitely
- 28:29Speaker 3: enjoyed that part of it, but.
- 28:32Speaker 4: Yo, all about you man, shouts out to my brother
- 28:36Speaker 4: tay Man, like, all about You got a special place
- 28:42Speaker 4: in my heart. Because again, like so after this dropped,
- 28:49Speaker 4: this just like this became the zeitgeist. Now, so this
- 28:55Speaker 4: like impacted our slang. This impacted like some of how
- 28:59Speaker 4: we saw life. So with that all about You, when
- 29:05Speaker 4: I would be outside with my people's, yo, man, it
- 29:09Speaker 4: was these two girls that used to just walk through
- 29:13Speaker 4: the neighborhood all the time, and they'd be together all
- 29:17Speaker 4: the time.
- 29:18Speaker 3: And of course, like I said, were young. We ain't
- 29:21Speaker 3: got no game.
- 29:22Speaker 4: You know, we're trying to We're trying to, you know,
- 29:25Speaker 4: talk to him, cause you know, two girls we see.
- 29:28Speaker 3: All the time, Hey, what's up?
- 29:31Speaker 4: And I'm pretty sure they looking at like yo, these
- 29:34Speaker 4: dirty thugs.
- 29:35Speaker 3: You're like, yo, I ain't like.
- 29:37Speaker 4: Hold on like yo, we quote unquote scaring ohs. Like
- 29:41Speaker 4: I think we was maybe doing that a little bit.
- 29:45Speaker 4: So I just remember my brother Tay just singing that hook,
- 29:50Speaker 4: like he started singing that every time we would see
- 29:55Speaker 4: them at the while, like every place we go we
- 29:59Speaker 4: see the same. So I got a I got a
- 30:04Speaker 4: special place in my heart with all about you, man,
- 30:08Speaker 4: That's what's crazy.
- 30:09Speaker 2: It's so it's just it's a relatable song whether you
- 30:13Speaker 2: were a musician or whatever, because even watching videos.
- 30:18Speaker 1: It made sense to me, Like I seen her in
- 30:21Speaker 1: that video and.
- 30:23Speaker 3: Yeah, the famous outro from Stupid.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Yeah, it was true. It was like did they right?
- 30:30Speaker 4: Like looking at the Million Man March, It's like yo
- 30:38Speaker 4: that and that's the second song, Like we got a
- 30:41Speaker 4: second song of a and then we get into all
- 30:45Speaker 4: about you like yo man.
- 30:48Speaker 3: So a lot of a lot.
- 30:49Speaker 4: Of games, a lot of ism on on on this
- 30:54Speaker 4: on this album.
- 30:56Speaker 3: Just again that overall it alley vibe fun, you know
- 31:03Speaker 3: what I'm saying.
- 31:03Speaker 4: There was aggressive, you know, yeah, I think the aggressive
- 31:08Speaker 4: records on here was more so from a I want
- 31:13Speaker 4: to say, maybe like competitive like rapping like I don't
- 31:20Speaker 4: it was.
- 31:21Speaker 3: I don't really feel like.
- 31:22Speaker 4: All out going at somebody like he just more styling,
- 31:28Speaker 4: you know, throwing it up and showing that yo I
- 31:31Speaker 4: can rhyme and I'm yo, I'm just as well. Really
- 31:34Speaker 4: I'm the best. Like I think that was how he
- 31:36Speaker 4: felt that. It definitely sounded like that, but more of
- 31:42Speaker 4: a fun, a fun vibe on this, you know what
- 31:47Speaker 4: I mean. Even with some of the aggressive records like
- 31:50Speaker 4: when We Ride, was definitely him getting it getting into
- 31:54Speaker 4: the bishop bag for sure, But it wasn't like, of course,
- 31:59Speaker 4: with Gonna get too later on with mcavelly, but it
- 32:04Speaker 4: was I think the intro, like that's the first time
- 32:09Speaker 4: I ever heard him refer to himself as mcavelly. He
- 32:13Speaker 4: says it on when we robbed plus macabelly. You know,
- 32:17Speaker 4: so he starts it. He starts to throw you know,
- 32:22Speaker 4: I guess foreshadowing and we're gonna get into some film stuff.
- 32:26Speaker 4: He starts to throw those little teasers in it, and
- 32:29Speaker 4: one one other thing. As far as the timeliness, so again,
- 32:35Speaker 4: I think Pop sitting there, sitting in jail, or maybe
- 32:39Speaker 4: even when he came back home, listening to the people
- 32:42Speaker 4: that he liked, like you could tell that he rocked
- 32:46Speaker 4: with Wu Tang because Wu Tang they had just with
- 32:52Speaker 4: Ray Kwan the year prior.
- 32:54Speaker 3: They just did all the alias stuff.
- 32:58Speaker 4: You know, Riley Fingers and Let's diamonds tupac. Oh. Oh,
- 33:03Speaker 4: we we were doing that. I'm I'm with that too,
- 33:08Speaker 4: like I'm gonna take it. I'm mcavelly like, oh yo,
- 33:13Speaker 4: what's that? Like, I'm gonna take it a whole nother.
- 33:17Speaker 4: A Lepard so timely, timely man oh and one other thing,
- 33:22Speaker 4: big records, big, big records, like it just felt like.
- 33:31Speaker 3: Yo, we I'm swinging.
- 33:33Speaker 4: I'm swinging for the fences like big records.
- 33:40Speaker 3: It don't matter what's going on.
- 33:44Speaker 4: I'm dropping this and the sound is they they sound
- 33:49Speaker 4: like big it's big records. Like nothing nothing to me
- 33:55Speaker 4: on this is modest, Like sure you got more laid
- 33:59Speaker 4: back songs, but no, all I was on me I
- 34:04Speaker 4: there's no modesty on it on this out.
- 34:09Speaker 3: But y know what you what you think?
- 34:11Speaker 5: Man?
- 34:12Speaker 1: I agree?
- 34:13Speaker 2: Man, I think to your point of you know, hearing
- 34:18Speaker 2: ambitions of a rider, you know, to start the album also, uh,
- 34:25Speaker 2: not to skip it, but the first single being California Love,
- 34:30Speaker 2: And that's when he was talking directly to the East
- 34:35Speaker 2: versus West or typically Cali in New York, right, because I.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Ain't gonna lie.
- 34:42Speaker 2: And this is why Zoel had to come around with
- 34:44Speaker 2: the album later, because when Tupac was like, you know,
- 34:48Speaker 2: where we ride, not rally, where we wear Chuck's not Ballet's,
- 34:53Speaker 2: I'm like, first of all, you shown your age, so
- 34:55Speaker 2: Bally's like Bally has been ain't going like that was
- 35:00Speaker 2: the eighties man like ballot and you had.
- 35:03Speaker 1: To be able to afford him.
- 35:05Speaker 2: But I didn't like it, not because somebody who's not
- 35:09Speaker 2: from here is saying it. It's because somebody who is
- 35:12Speaker 2: from here. And to me, riot rally, what does it matter, mister?
- 35:17Speaker 2: You know black panthers, you know, kid like, it's both
- 35:22Speaker 2: fighting for the black folk. So I had a problem,
- 35:25Speaker 2: my conscious part had a problem with him saying that.
- 35:29Speaker 1: And because it was him, you know what I'm saying, like,
- 35:32Speaker 1: it wasn't some.
- 35:33Speaker 2: Other ignorant dude who decided to speak on it. It
- 35:36Speaker 2: was Tupac, Like if anybody knows Tupac. So I didn't
- 35:40Speaker 2: like that part. But the beat was crazy, okay, like
- 35:44Speaker 2: the funk. I'm into the punk. You get Roger Troutman
- 35:47Speaker 2: on there. I'm just like, that's that's what I love.
- 35:51Speaker 2: That's why some people say, you know, oh, it's crazy
- 35:53Speaker 2: how you're from New York. You're like, oh, this West Coast.
- 35:55Speaker 2: It's like, it's not just the West Coast. EPMD was
- 35:59Speaker 2: my favorite group. You want to know why, because their
- 36:01Speaker 2: beats it's all funk, Like I love funk from the seventies,
- 36:07Speaker 2: and the fact that they were using that and EPMD
- 36:10Speaker 2: was using that and they rock with EPMD because of that,
- 36:13Speaker 2: like it was a mutual thing. But when I, like
- 36:16Speaker 2: you said, Big Records. In the first time I saw
- 36:20Speaker 2: the video, the mad Max video, I was like this,
- 36:25Speaker 2: this is crazy, Like this is crazy Tupac home, Like
- 36:28Speaker 2: this is crazy Tupac, just like I'm home, doctor Dre.
- 36:33Speaker 1: Let's get it.
- 36:35Speaker 2: So there was a lot of you know, for me,
- 36:37Speaker 2: there was a lot of energy, and like you said,
- 36:39Speaker 2: when I heard all about you, that felt to me
- 36:43Speaker 2: like a signal that, oh, Tupac's on death row, cause
- 36:47Speaker 2: this ain't no fun doggie dog world. It's all in
- 36:52Speaker 2: that same pocket. And I liked it a lot. And
- 36:56Speaker 2: he had already, you know, obviously worked with them on
- 37:00Speaker 2: the above the Rim soundtrack and clearly has some of
- 37:04Speaker 2: the standouts on there like pain and Pour Out a
- 37:07Speaker 2: Little Liquor and all of that, so we already knew
- 37:10Speaker 2: it would work. But this was just like, man, this
- 37:13Speaker 2: Tupac sound good being on death Road, Like that's what
- 37:17Speaker 2: it just sounded like. And like you said, like me
- 37:20Speaker 2: Against the World was a whole different vibe. Even all
- 37:25Speaker 2: those albums was a whole different vibe. But this was
- 37:28Speaker 2: just this was just bigger. It was like Blockbusters, you
- 37:31Speaker 2: know what, I'm saying, like he did the indie movies,
- 37:36Speaker 2: but now he got a Marvel movie coming out. Yeah yeah,
- 37:42Speaker 2: like Star Wars.
- 37:43Speaker 1: And then.
- 37:46Speaker 2: He does a song with Snoop, two of America's most
- 37:50Speaker 2: wanted Yo, you can't. I didn't even know how to
- 37:53Speaker 2: dance to this. I might have been dancing like an
- 37:56Speaker 2: old man or something, or like a fake gang.
- 38:00Speaker 1: Ain't good thing. I just wanted to fight. I just
- 38:02Speaker 1: I just loved this.
- 38:04Speaker 2: I love this record because it was perfect and even
- 38:07Speaker 2: in the video, like Tupac got all the swag, like
- 38:10Speaker 2: while the camera spinned around here like like Nigga, it's Tupac,
- 38:13Speaker 2: I'm here.
- 38:15Speaker 1: The dude was just infectious, you know what I'm saying.
- 38:18Speaker 2: And there was just for context around this time, they
- 38:21Speaker 2: were some of my friends and Piggie's my favorite rapper
- 38:26Speaker 2: all the time.
- 38:27Speaker 1: Some of my friends was.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Not trying to hear anything from Tupac, and not all
- 38:32Speaker 2: of them was from Brooklyn.
- 38:33Speaker 1: Or New York. It was just what who he talking about?
- 38:39Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying.
- 38:40Speaker 2: And don't get me wrong, I felt some of that also,
- 38:45Speaker 2: but I don't deny good music. But I especially on
- 38:49Speaker 2: the hip hop side, so I was like you man,
- 38:51Speaker 2: I was when I finally got my hands on this album,
- 38:54Speaker 2: was going through it.
- 38:55Speaker 1: I mean, I'm.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Gonna just be real with y'all, like, I'm not a revision,
- 38:59Speaker 2: It's history. Do there are some skits for me. There's
- 39:02Speaker 2: some stuff where I was just like, like I said,
- 39:05Speaker 2: old man, I was like, yo, this is for the
- 39:09Speaker 2: players with the with them pants on and the gators
- 39:13Speaker 2: and the tackle meat silk shirt showings like you know,
- 39:19Speaker 2: say stuff like let me get my old lady and
- 39:22Speaker 2: I'm gonna call you back like them, you know what
- 39:25Speaker 2: I'm saying. And again, you know, even though I was
- 39:29Speaker 2: in college, I was I was young also, so there
- 39:32Speaker 2: was just a certain level of that I was willing
- 39:36Speaker 2: to listen to from somebody who's in their twenties, right
- 39:39Speaker 2: like White, Yes, you know what I'm saying.
- 39:42Speaker 1: But just that Derby.
- 39:44Speaker 2: You know, back then, everybody with the Derby's wearing them
- 39:47Speaker 2: joints with the pat leather shoes on. You know what
- 39:51Speaker 2: I'm saying, slipping and sliding. So it's to me was
- 39:54Speaker 2: it was fun. But real quick, let's let's talk about
- 40:00Speaker 2: because we have a whole another album to go to.
- 40:02Speaker 1: Let's talk about.
- 40:05Speaker 2: Nash Street Dreams and All Eyes on Me having the
- 40:12Speaker 2: same exact beat and an album that dropped the same
- 40:18Speaker 2: year that we'll talk about in another episode. But the
- 40:22Speaker 2: message fake thug, no love, you get the slugs see
- 40:26Speaker 2: before gust.
- 40:26Speaker 1: O talking to Dre like there was it now?
- 40:31Speaker 2: NAS album came out later in ninety six, but there
- 40:34Speaker 2: was a lot of references towards this album and Tupac.
- 40:41Speaker 1: What do you think about the whole idea?
- 40:44Speaker 2: And Tupac addressed it also just wait, yeah, yeah, you
- 40:49Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, But what do you think about that?
- 40:52Speaker 2: Like even like, for example, the NAS and Dre song
- 40:58Speaker 2: Nas is coming, where he was like, you know, niggas
- 41:01Speaker 2: still at beats and shit.
- 41:02Speaker 1: And blah blah blah.
- 41:04Speaker 2: There weren't no other similar beats on high profile artists' albums.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Besides the fact that.
- 41:12Speaker 2: All Eyes on Me has the same exact beat as
- 41:15Speaker 2: Street Dreams.
- 41:16Speaker 1: What did you think about that when you heard about that?
- 41:19Speaker 4: Yo, man, Again, I think it was maybe the maturity
- 41:24Speaker 4: with me. I didn't think it was that. I didn't
- 41:27Speaker 4: think it was that crazy, Like I just was like,
- 41:32Speaker 4: all right, I did. I didn't look into it that deep,
- 41:38Speaker 4: you know what I mean? I think it just might
- 41:40Speaker 4: have been my age, you know, I called it like,
- 41:44Speaker 4: oh yo, they got the.
- 41:45Speaker 3: Same Okay, they got.
- 41:47Speaker 4: The same beat, but it was more like what do
- 41:52Speaker 4: we want to listen to today?
- 41:53Speaker 3: Like or yo, we're gonna listen to both.
- 41:57Speaker 4: Like like that was I guess my circle. Again, I
- 42:03Speaker 4: had to the brothers Kenyon and Tank, and I don't
- 42:07Speaker 4: even remember them. You know, they probably would see this
- 42:11Speaker 4: and be like no, I don't remember even remember them
- 42:15Speaker 4: going in like that, Like it was just okay, they
- 42:20Speaker 4: both got the same the same sample. It felt like
- 42:28Speaker 4: with with with NAS, it it.
- 42:35Speaker 3: Did feel like he was going for it with all
- 42:40Speaker 3: eyes on me.
- 42:41Speaker 4: It just felt it just was aligned with all the
- 42:45Speaker 4: other big records, you know what I'm saying.
- 42:48Speaker 3: But with NAS and.
- 42:52Speaker 4: Street Dreams, it felt like, okay that I'm competing, I'm
- 42:59Speaker 4: comeing and.
- 43:03Speaker 3: You know I can make big records too. But I didn't.
- 43:07Speaker 4: I didn't see it as like it didn't strike me
- 43:11Speaker 4: as all Yo. He went in and I didn't get
- 43:14Speaker 4: the ghost face shot bters, but I didn't get that, yeah,
- 43:21Speaker 4: like he been off a.
- 43:22Speaker 3: Pot like I didn't.
- 43:25Speaker 4: I didn't get that and that and again that might
- 43:28Speaker 4: have been my maturity. I might not have been thinking
- 43:30Speaker 4: about it that deep back then, but you know, I
- 43:34Speaker 4: like both the songs, you know, All Eyes on Me,
- 43:38Speaker 4: Low Rider, Ski Masks, Scream with Doug Life every time
- 43:42Speaker 4: we I like both of.
- 43:43Speaker 1: Them, right, you know.
- 43:45Speaker 2: But when you think about what they did with the records,
- 43:48Speaker 2: and for people who don't know who you know, maybe
- 43:51Speaker 2: you weren't around at the time and you're only looking
- 43:52Speaker 2: at the dates. There was no Internet, but there there
- 43:56Speaker 2: were ways to kind of get ideas about how people
- 44:00Speaker 2: felt about Oh, I'm talking about the artists it felt
- 44:03Speaker 2: because it felt like Nas felt an obligation to address
- 44:08Speaker 2: it on it was written because remember All Eyes of
- 44:12Speaker 2: Me dropped in February.
- 44:14Speaker 1: It was written was July, you know what I'm saying.
- 44:17Speaker 2: So it was almost like he wasn't making a disc record,
- 44:20Speaker 2: but he was addressing the whatever, like that's what I
- 44:25Speaker 2: speculated on Like it must be something more than just
- 44:27Speaker 2: sane beat happen, you know what I'm saying for that
- 44:32Speaker 2: to be the case. But to O's point, there are
- 44:35Speaker 2: two very different records, Like Naza is kind of telling
- 44:38Speaker 2: a story on his versions because it's street dreams and pop.
- 44:44Speaker 1: He just in the groove, all lies on me.
- 44:47Speaker 2: Lived the life of a thug nigga like till the
- 44:50Speaker 2: day I die, Like it's just all swags. So it's
- 44:53Speaker 2: like they weren't you know what I'm saying separately, But
- 44:57Speaker 2: I just remember again, we don't have the Internet, so
- 45:01Speaker 2: we all like piecemealing everything, and there were there was
- 45:05Speaker 2: always this thought of.
- 45:08Speaker 1: Damn, did pot take.
- 45:11Speaker 2: That beat like nas is saying, or did Naas come
- 45:14Speaker 2: later and do this?
- 45:15Speaker 3: Like yeah, I remember it coming.
- 45:18Speaker 4: I remember that topic coming up in discussion, but I personally.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Didn't didn't look that deeper to it.
- 45:28Speaker 4: But I remember brothers thinking that there was some type
- 45:33Speaker 4: of but I didn't. I just didn't play into it.
- 45:37Speaker 2: And look, well, real quick, this is what people have
- 45:41Speaker 2: to keep in mind. Just because it was written dropped
- 45:45Speaker 2: in July doesn't mean it wasn't already recorded a year
- 45:51Speaker 2: or a year or two before that. So it was
- 45:54Speaker 2: just a matter of what was released first versus what
- 45:58Speaker 2: was actually recorded first. Sometimes it just plays out like
- 46:01Speaker 2: that you're working on that album, especially back then, you
- 46:04Speaker 2: might be working on the album two three years or
- 46:06Speaker 2: something like that and have that song in a can,
- 46:10Speaker 2: and you know, somebody say, send a beat tape to Tupac.
- 46:14Speaker 1: And it's like, oh, yeah, that one.
- 46:18Speaker 2: You don't know. Maybe he didn't know, like you know
- 46:20Speaker 2: what I'm saying. Yeah, yeah man, But.
- 46:23Speaker 4: It's like you said, with that vibe of maybe nas
- 46:29Speaker 4: feeling like you gotta address it, like yeah from us
- 46:35Speaker 4: on the outside looking in, like yeah, maybe, Well when
- 46:39Speaker 4: we find out later on with Tupac, No you talk
- 46:43Speaker 4: you talking to me, okay, like I hear you loud
- 46:50Speaker 4: and clear, like, and that's what we get into with
- 46:55Speaker 4: the next album, right, But yeah, man, like tension, temperatures rising,
- 47:03Speaker 4: tension was brewing, tension was brewing. But I think it was,
- 47:10Speaker 4: like you said now recalling, I think it was hit
- 47:14Speaker 4: him up.
- 47:15Speaker 3: That's why I was when you said.
- 47:16Speaker 4: It earlier, I was like, well, I thought that was
- 47:19Speaker 4: just before Macavelly.
- 47:21Speaker 3: So now when you went and confirmed it was the.
- 47:23Speaker 4: Summer, Yeah, that was when the yo oh everybody got
- 47:29Speaker 4: something to say.
- 47:32Speaker 2: Here's my Yeah, we were definitely gonna get into that
- 47:37Speaker 2: one because because of the timeline and the fact that
- 47:40Speaker 2: we're doing both albums and everything is so linked. So
- 47:46Speaker 2: in closing with all eyes on me, I give me
- 47:49Speaker 2: some of your favorite songs.
- 47:51Speaker 1: Whether you think this is a classic album. And how
- 47:54Speaker 1: do you think it sounds today?
- 47:58Speaker 2: Like if someone was listening to a for the first
- 48:00Speaker 2: time and they know all these things about all eyes
- 48:04Speaker 2: on me, what do you think they would get out
- 48:06Speaker 2: of me?
- 48:07Speaker 3: Yeah? Man, so it's crazy.
- 48:12Speaker 4: So the fifteen year old me, there's so much material
- 48:19Speaker 4: on this album. When I was fifteen, I did not
- 48:23Speaker 4: do no straight listen through this album. I just I
- 48:28Speaker 4: just gotta keep it one hundred. I didn't straight up
- 48:31Speaker 4: put this on and we listen to two We me
- 48:35Speaker 4: and my homie Jeff did not sit there for two hours.
- 48:38Speaker 1: And I was gonna say, I was just looking at that.
- 48:41Speaker 3: That that did not happen. That did not happen.
- 48:45Speaker 4: What happened was the music was so good and within
- 48:51Speaker 4: our you know, within our lives and within the culture.
- 48:58Speaker 4: I heard like all of these that on records with
- 49:01Speaker 4: maybe except for maybe like two or three, Like I
- 49:05Speaker 4: heard all of these records at some point given time,
- 49:10Speaker 4: Like I heard all of these records. So that to
- 49:12Speaker 4: me is a testament to how good it is now.
- 49:16Speaker 4: All right, forty five year old a Canola, all right,
- 49:21Speaker 4: I'm gonna put this album on two hours, like you know,
- 49:26Speaker 4: I need some time like I gotta be like doing something,
- 49:31Speaker 4: a drive, cleaning the house, something got to be going
- 49:35Speaker 4: on for two hours. You mentioned it earlier that definitely
- 49:39Speaker 4: some skips ain't gonna lie. There's some skips. There are
- 49:44Speaker 4: some things on here that now I understand those players
- 49:48Speaker 4: joints now, I understand.
- 49:51Speaker 3: But I'm married, man, so it's not applicable.
- 49:55Speaker 4: Applicable now well if I turn it on right now,
- 49:59Speaker 4: but oh before being married and things like that. A
- 50:02Speaker 4: lot of game, you know that a for the for
- 50:06Speaker 4: the brothers listen to and the sisters too. You know,
- 50:10Speaker 4: like a lot of game from from this album, you know, musically,
- 50:17Speaker 4: the musicality again, I think that.
- 50:20Speaker 1: That holds mm hmmm.
- 50:23Speaker 3: That holds like the production value elite, elite level.
- 50:30Speaker 4: And I want to get into this when we talk
- 50:32Speaker 4: about mcavelly, like this whole uh perspective on Tupac's production,
- 50:40Speaker 4: that that was all that was always a conversation, right,
- 50:45Speaker 4: But yeah, forty five year old listening to this now, yeah,
- 50:50Speaker 4: the production still holds. I would just say, yeah, there's
- 50:54Speaker 4: definitely some some skips.
- 50:56Speaker 3: On two hours.
- 50:58Speaker 2: It's like two I and twelve minutes.
- 51:05Speaker 4: But despite all of that, Vegas, I do feel like
- 51:09Speaker 4: this is a classic yo, And I know that doesn't
- 51:12Speaker 4: follow the hip hop head definition of yo.
- 51:19Speaker 6: No skips, it's got no you can't stay in a classic,
- 51:23Speaker 6: get you skipped the impact.
- 51:27Speaker 4: Of this album in the execution, I just think it's
- 51:33Speaker 4: it's supersedes some of that. And yeah, there are joints
- 51:39Speaker 4: on here, you in the in the move for and
- 51:41Speaker 4: it's so much like so much color, you know, E
- 51:46Speaker 4: forty and then the big you know, big sight rest.
- 51:49Speaker 3: In pieces, I got keys coming from over. It's just
- 51:52Speaker 3: so much color variety.
- 51:57Speaker 4: As a hip hop head, you know, listening from that
- 52:01Speaker 4: perspective and just liking music, I definitely think it's a classic,
- 52:06Speaker 4: you know.
- 52:06Speaker 3: Talking about ratings, you know, I say a four.
- 52:11Speaker 4: On another day you talk to me, I might say
- 52:13Speaker 4: three point five, you know, but three point five to
- 52:18Speaker 4: four for sure for me personally.
- 52:22Speaker 1: What what are some of your favorite tracks on here?
- 52:28Speaker 3: Pitching me rolling man, that's definitely one rolling them up.
- 52:33Speaker 1: That's the grown man I could do. That's the one
- 52:35Speaker 1: I could deal with. The sugar Daddy joints. It depends
- 52:40Speaker 1: some of them. I rock with some of them. I'm like, nah, man, like.
- 52:43Speaker 4: Yeah, man, it's something about YO them them them guitars
- 52:47Speaker 4: and the way like yo, the way he he coasting
- 52:52Speaker 4: on that, it just it is it's pitching me rolling
- 52:57Speaker 4: like it's really that Like so that just celebration, like
- 53:04Speaker 4: and you know you got I guess people talking bad
- 53:06Speaker 4: about you or whatever, but you just on your grind
- 53:09Speaker 4: and doing doing your thing. That's what you press play
- 53:13Speaker 4: on that picture be rolling, you know, uh, when we ride.
- 53:19Speaker 4: I definitely like when we ride, that's like more on
- 53:24Speaker 4: you know, the competitive you know posse cuts I mentioned
- 53:30Speaker 4: all about you got my mind made up?
- 53:33Speaker 3: You know, those are like my favorite favorite tracks. I mean,
- 53:35Speaker 3: you mentioned ambitioning of rider. You know, Shorty want to
- 53:39Speaker 3: be a thug. Can't see Me?
- 53:41Speaker 4: I actually thought, like, can't see me is like the recharge,
- 53:49Speaker 4: Like just when you thought, okay, like I had enough,
- 53:53Speaker 4: can't see me just as like no, yo, we about
- 53:57Speaker 4: to go in for another.
- 53:58Speaker 3: Thirteen joints and it's like, you know what I'm here.
- 54:02Speaker 4: For it like that just turns it back up again.
- 54:06Speaker 4: So yeah, man, those are like some of my favorite
- 54:09Speaker 4: favorite joys.
- 54:10Speaker 3: Man, what about you?
- 54:12Speaker 2: That was kind of the formula back then because of
- 54:15Speaker 2: cassette tapes, Like when somebody go flip that tape over
- 54:20Speaker 2: to the B side, like that first song had to
- 54:23Speaker 2: pull them right back in, you know what I'm saying.
- 54:26Speaker 2: Which is interesting when you think about albums throughout the
- 54:30Speaker 2: years anyway, because it's the same thing with vinyl, right
- 54:33Speaker 2: you only getting with so much on that first side.
- 54:36Speaker 1: You got to make an impression.
- 54:38Speaker 2: So the sequence in for each era of the media
- 54:42Speaker 2: had to adapt in a lot of ways, and probably
- 54:46Speaker 2: the same thing for streaming, right, Like, there's probably a
- 54:49Speaker 2: thought process that probably I can't say there's a template
- 54:55Speaker 2: now because I feel like it's ever changing to come back,
- 55:00Speaker 2: you know, people just going and trying to grab stuff
- 55:03Speaker 2: or skimming through things. So maybe there's there's something to that,
- 55:07Speaker 2: but you're right back then it was more so like
- 55:11Speaker 2: you know, we we want you to flip the tape
- 55:14Speaker 2: and keep going. And you know what I'm saying, Uh,
- 55:16Speaker 2: sometimes those records have to be that standouts for me.
- 55:20Speaker 2: I sat a couple of them ambitions as a writer.
- 55:23Speaker 2: All about You Scandalous.
- 55:26Speaker 1: Is one of them.
- 55:27Speaker 2: You know, cat Daddy let me put let me put
- 55:29Speaker 2: the start on my pants on my slacks, so I
- 55:33Speaker 2: put the you know, the shoes on the slippery earls
- 55:35Speaker 2: and walk outside like I couldn't even describe why like it.
- 55:40Speaker 1: I just was like, this is almost like like Prince
- 55:44Speaker 1: would have made it or something like you know what
- 55:46Speaker 1: I'm saying, Rick James or somebody, so.
- 55:48Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know what I'm saying.
- 55:51Speaker 1: And I think that's why I was into it, because
- 55:53Speaker 1: I was a big Rick James and Prince fan. So
- 55:56Speaker 1: I got my mom made up to two of America's
- 56:01Speaker 1: most wanted same thing in California.
- 56:04Speaker 2: Love I Ain't Mad At You was a record that
- 56:08Speaker 2: I thought was cool, but I forgot about it until
- 56:13Speaker 2: the video dropped, and then I paid way more attention
- 56:17Speaker 2: to it. It's probably the one song besides Ambitions of
- 56:21Speaker 2: a Rider that I actively play like I tell myself
- 56:26Speaker 2: like I feel like hearing that you know what I'm saying,
- 56:29Speaker 2: and I know every bar I feel it like it's
- 56:33Speaker 2: just one of those great moments of.
- 56:37Speaker 1: This is Tupac's strength.
- 56:39Speaker 2: Like anybody who's oh he was wild blah blah blah,
- 56:42Speaker 2: listen to this, Listen to what he's saying. This is
- 56:45Speaker 2: a sincere note to a friend. You know what I'm saying,
- 56:49Speaker 2: like from a world maybe you maybe you don't know
- 56:52Speaker 2: aiden Ross maybe you don't. Maybe you ain't from that
- 56:55Speaker 2: world and people like him, but this is why these
- 56:58Speaker 2: songs meet, these things to us pitching me Roland like
- 57:01Speaker 2: you said, and probably all eyes on me. But yeah,
- 57:06Speaker 2: I also feel despite me skipping a couple of tracks
- 57:11Speaker 2: here and there, I feel like it's a classic for
- 57:13Speaker 2: all the things we mentioned, besides just the actual music.
- 57:19Speaker 2: It's one of them joints. As soon as you hit play,
- 57:21Speaker 2: if you were outside back then, regardless of the age,
- 57:25Speaker 2: you know exactly where you were as since you hit
- 57:27Speaker 2: some of this stuff. So now, right before we go
- 57:31Speaker 2: to Macavelly, we got to make a stop and hit
- 57:35Speaker 2: him up.
- 57:36Speaker 1: All right.
- 57:39Speaker 2: Now, I've said this numerous times on my podcast. I
- 57:42Speaker 2: believe I wrote about it also, I think so. And
- 57:48Speaker 2: when I heard it, I had the timeline a little
- 57:49Speaker 2: screwed up. But hey, look man, two more years, I'm
- 57:52Speaker 2: gonna be fifty dog like relax. But I just remember
- 57:58Speaker 2: like it was yesterday. And I'm asking you like the
- 58:00Speaker 2: first time you heard it, But I remember like it
- 58:03Speaker 2: was yesterday. You know, I was religiously going to Beach
- 58:06Speaker 2: Street to pick up music, see what's new, Just kind
- 58:10Speaker 2: of like it was my way of while I'm at
- 58:13Speaker 2: home reading the source magazine to go out and touch
- 58:16Speaker 2: the things I've you know, read about or learned about,
- 58:20Speaker 2: whether it's buying it or whatever. But another beauty of
- 58:23Speaker 2: something like that was hearing records that weren't out like
- 58:29Speaker 2: before mixtapes really got heavy with Clue and all of
- 58:31Speaker 2: that early on, and you know, Clue was around during
- 58:34Speaker 2: this time, but this was a way to hear things
- 58:37Speaker 2: by just going there, you know, to buy music. And
- 58:41Speaker 2: I remember the Load talking and it's this episode is
- 58:46Speaker 2: already labeled explicit, so you should have been got your
- 58:50Speaker 2: kids out here.
- 58:50Speaker 1: But I remember the Load talking. I'm just shopping and
- 58:54Speaker 1: I'm just like, who the fuck is whisperend is no friends?
- 58:58Speaker 1: I'm like, who the fuck? What?
- 59:00Speaker 3: Oh?
- 59:00Speaker 1: Maybe the snaker testing something?
- 59:02Speaker 3: Well?
- 59:02Speaker 1: I heard was that's why I fucked your bitch, you
- 59:05Speaker 1: fat motherfucker.
- 59:06Speaker 3: What side I was like, is that Tupac? I was like, Yo,
- 59:11Speaker 3: what is this?
- 59:13Speaker 1: First off?
- 59:13Speaker 2: Fucking bitch? And the click you clean west Side? We
- 59:17Speaker 2: equipped with game. You claim to be a player, but
- 59:20Speaker 2: I fucked your wife. When I heard that, I was like, Nah,
- 59:22Speaker 2: wait a minute, I gotta go after the DJ.
- 59:26Speaker 1: What is going on?
- 59:27Speaker 2: You know?
- 59:27Speaker 1: What I'm saying. I was like, and this is before
- 59:30Speaker 1: we could just chalk it up and be like, oh
- 59:31Speaker 1: that shit is Ai Man, get out of here. That's
- 59:33Speaker 1: a no, no no. Not back then DJ is like, oh.
- 59:40Speaker 2: Tupai just biggie before you even got to it, mom
- 59:44Speaker 2: d geno Ex, I was like, what the fuck? Like what?
- 59:47Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 59:48Speaker 2: So you know it played out and then obviously we
- 59:51Speaker 2: heard it and I saw the video and all of that,
- 59:53Speaker 2: and I remember the conversations with my friends again. Some
- 59:57Speaker 2: of them was just really on on Tupac for dissing
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: but the number one thing they would always say and
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: rest in peace Prodigy.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: He was like, don't one of your niggas got sickle cells?
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: Something fucking around like the heart attack?
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: And he was like what.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: First of all, I didn't know that at that point
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: in time, So that was that's what was crazy. I
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: didn't even know.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: I was like, what, pro did you have sickle cell?
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: And why Tupac saying that like that and he not
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: even identifying. H don't give a fuck, don't want of
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: you motherfucker's got sickle cell something. And just before we
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: go to ot like my review of hit him up,
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: like I like the outlaws. But anytime I hit get
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: out the way, I'm like, nah, man, just get this
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: ship got out of here. I only want to hear
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: from Pac like now, I don't care what y'all say,
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: y'all about to do. We don't know y'all who cares.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: But Pac was.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: He was big brotherren, little nigga ind like everybody like
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: little Caesar, go ask your homie how I treat you?
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: Cut your young ass up, leave you in pieces? Little
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: can I snatch your ugly.
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: Ass off the streets, off the streets?
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: And that shit hurt her by the way she said that.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: I was just like wow, And then the hook was hot.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: I ain't on front as a Brooklyn dude loves Biggie.
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: Grab your glocks when you see Tupac. Call the cops
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: when you see Tupac. A playoff of Player's Anthem, which
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: was a hit at the time Ultimate disrecord. I Where
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: were you when you heard this? And what were your thoughts?
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:01:45Speaker 4: I think I had to have been on on my
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: on my block and the brothers out outside was playing it.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 1:01:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: It was.
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: Like damn, like yo, it's it's it's on like yo.
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: They bought it like like Yo, I just that was
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: my immediate thought, like.
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: Yo, I just knew. I knew Biggie was going to
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: respond like this is me.
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: When I first heard it, I was just like, oh, yo,
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: I know Biggie's gonna respond. You know what I'm saying,
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: mob beat, but I don't know what they're gonna what
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: they're gonna say, like because this was this was crazy.
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: And then like you said that whole thing, like Yo,
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: one of y'all got sickle. It was like, Yo, this
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: dude is blacking out like he is.
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: Wilent like yo. But yeah, I had to been on
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: my on my block when I heard that.
- 1:02:53Speaker 6: And again it it just became a part of after
- 1:02:59Speaker 6: after it dropped, it just it just went in the rotation.
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: But that's the crazy thing, like Yo, with my circle
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: of friends, like Yo, we did not It's not like
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: we wrote off everybody who he was talking about. We
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: was expecting responses, right, So I ain't gonna lie like
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: as bad as it may seem.
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: But this hip hop, we didn't know it was gonna
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: get the way that it was gonna get.
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: But we was just kind of like popping our popcorn,
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: like yo, oh yo, you heard what he said like yo, yo,
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: it's about to get crazy, you know.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: But that was my.
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: Initial thoughts, man. But I did not have any like
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: personal reservations like.
- 1:03:48Speaker 7: Against I don't know, man, I just chalked it up
- 1:03:53Speaker 7: like it was a part of the game, like yo, yo,
- 1:03:56Speaker 7: just going in he went like with some I.
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: Said, and now he just yo the whole East Coast.
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: I got problems.
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: Everybody over there that y'all that's popping, you know what
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: I got. I got problems with him, like That's how
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: I took it. And I just looked at it like,
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: well that there's air and opportunity for anybody in there, respawn.
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: This was not me being grown Vegas at all, Like
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: now I'm looking at it now, well god damn Like
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: you said what he said about Little Kim's Like well damnyo,
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: Like that wasn't even true, bro like like but he
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: wasn't trying to hear none of that like it was.
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: It was on so you know, and that just went
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: into the firestorm of okay, when and how and you know,
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: is it is it better? You know, that's that's when
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: it That's what it began. But I get to say,
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: from my perspective, Yo, my circle friends, we did not
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: choose sides.
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: We listened to. We listened to everybody in my circle friend.
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: I think there there were some folks that was like, yeah,
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: at the other side and blah blah blah.
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: I mean that next year when when Biggie dropped, we
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: was like, yo, put put that on, like boom boom boom.
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: We was like, Yo, this is this is crazy too, Like.
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: You know, so yeah, man, but that was my thought
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: when I heard it, like it was, it was crazy,
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: and I just knew we was gonna get response.
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: So when Biggie didn't respond, I was like, he said
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: the slick stuff. He said the slick get it to pox,
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: And I was like, yeah, but Yo, this over.
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: Here by yelling your name outside, bro, like it's like.
- 1:06:07Speaker 4: That's cool, and I guess you're on your player. But Yo,
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: this dude outside like he want all smoke, you know,
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: And I just I just thought, you know, he was
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: gonna get what he wanted lyrically, you know what I mean.
- 1:06:21Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, yeah, ain't none of them gonna go
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: for that, Like somebody gonna go go back at him.
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: Those are my initial thoughts.
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I just just for more context for people watching.
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: I'm a Brooklyn Knight and at the time, again as
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: a Tupac fan. Even though I thought it was crazy,
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: I was not feeling that at all. And it wasn't
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: just because oh guess he coming at New York. It
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: was like, nah, it was just that I felt like
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: Tupac was one of us, you know what I'm saying. Still,
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. I never felt like, oh,
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: who's this West Coast nigga. It was like, nah, that's
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: MC New York over there, this and us, you know
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: what I'm saying. And then also I ain't know who
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: shot who, who set up who, so we were still
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: trying to figure that out part out, but I was
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: I liked it because it's the same reason why I
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: will always give jay Z props for the jay Z
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: nasty right. It's only but so many subliminals back and forth.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: We can hear it before somebody say, ass nas, he
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: don't want it. We'll hold like set it that I
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: come from that set act. Now we ain't gonna keep
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: dancing a round though I don't like him, like how
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: about that? Like that's what we I know, that's where
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: we're from. Where it's just like, you know, the tension
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: and then one of two things gonna happen. Somebody gonna
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: get stuffed or somebody gonna say something, and it's just on.
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: So I looked at pac As and I look in retrospect.
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: I love the way he did it because he didn't
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: start out yelling and he was kind of talking to himself,
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: and he was you could tell his shit.
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: I go there, you know what I'm saying. Motherfuckers didn't
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: one mean shit.
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: That's why I fucked your bitch, you fat motherfucker, Like
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: he just I'm ready, nigga, I'm outside. So that's why
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: I liked about it. But also to the ox point,
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: you know, I expected. I remember the Gino exlhit was like, damn,
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: what Gino dude? Like, I didn't know what that shit
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: came out of left field. I was like, what the
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: fuck fuck Gino as HM And I was intrigued, like, damn,
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: but what did he say? But Prodigy did us justice
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: a little bit later, you know, on an album that
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: dropped the same year, in the fall of nineteen ninety six,
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: on Hell on Earth, I had the whole New York
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: State aiming at your face, and it was just like finally,
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: you know, somebody said something, but Tupac said it off.
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: He said the thing that was kind of in the
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: aird that everybody was kind of all dancing around. And
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: then we started hearing rumors of mccabelly, which well, the
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: title of the album is the Don Caluminati, the Seven
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: Day Theory. The artist is mcavelly. We all know it's Tupac,
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: but it dropped in November fifth, on November fifth, nineteen
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: ninety six, which if you don't know, that was after
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: Tupac had already passed away. But the rumors were there,
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: and they just got heavier and heavier and crazier and
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: crazier as you got to like, especially when Tupac got shot,
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: especially when he passed. It was, you know, he was
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: and he was saying some of this stuff. Right wait
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: till my album dropped. Mcavelly to Dawn, I'm over here,
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: you know, East Coast, a deaf East was a thing
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: that was kind of happening. It was, yeah, it was
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: like he was barking over there, and now he's like, man,
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: I'm gonna come back to New York and bark and
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: just real quick. We all know him, and we found
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: out later. But it's really big confirmed, RICI is that?
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: Him and Nas kind of you know, pieced it out
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: basically prior to this dropping, and Nas was aware of
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: the things that were being said, but we ain't have
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: the internet, so me.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: And I can't know all that, and we were just
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: waiting to hear what's here, So I.
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: Mcavelly, Uh, well, we're just gonna add all of it
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: right well, let me ask you this right before, because
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: it's tied to it. Where were you when you heard
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: and what were your thoughts when you heard Tupac got shot?
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: And then also where were you when he passed away.
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: I don't remember where I was when he got shot.
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: I think I might was in the house I was
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: when he passed.
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: I was on the I was on my I was
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: on the block. I wasn't on my block, but.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: I was on my my homies block.
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: We called it across Tracks, So I was over in
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: Park Heights when he passed away. But when he got shot,
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: I don't remember, but I do remember what I thought, like, Oh,
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: he's gonna be good, Like I did not think he
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: was gonna pass I'm like, oh, yo, he got he
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: got shot. Before he'd be he'd be good. And then
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: when he passed, I was outside, I was on the block.
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: I remember that, and I remember telling my other friends
- 1:11:47Speaker 4: and my crew told me because we didn't have no internet.
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: So it's crazy thinking it back on it now, I
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: think I might have heard it on the radio.
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: And then I told then I was telling my friends
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: like yo, like yo gone you know on on Ridgewood Avenue.
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: Yeah, man, I.
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: Just it was.
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: It was surreal, you know what I mean, Like I
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: did not expect to hear that, and then you know,
- 1:12:25Speaker 3: telling telling friends that didn't know, like, so it was.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: It was. It was crazy.
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: So yeah, that's what I That's what I remember.
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I think for me, For me, it was the
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: same thing that Now. The reason why I said when
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: he got shot is because when Tupai got shot, I
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: was in the club and the DJ stopped and I
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: was in the club in b Moore and the DJ
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: stopped the music and was like, Tupac got shot again, y'all.
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: Now the DJ was from New York, so he had
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: some slick shit to say about him getting shot. Wow,
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: like like on something you know off that hit him
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: up energy, Like you outside talking like that.
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: We didn't know the details.
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: We didn't know he snuffed a gang banger from the
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: West Coast and you know, a drive by occurred.
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: All he knew was that Tupac got shot.
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: He was in the hospital, and for a second, me
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: and my friends was like, damn, cause you know, you
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: think about people getting shot almost some people make it,
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: some people don't. And I know for me personally, you know,
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: I had friends that got shot and killed, and then
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: I had my cousin like three years before that gets
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: shot and killed. So every time I heard, especially at
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: that time, every time I heard something like that, that's
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: when my mind went first like damn, he's how many times?
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: But then I remember, we remember what we were talking about.
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: I was like, oh, Tubacs, five shots couldn't stop me.
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: I took it in s mind like, oh, well he
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: gonna be good, yeah, which sounds crazy. And yes, we
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: were young because it's like, nah, you don't just go
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: getting shot because you could take him like this depends
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: on where you got hit and what else and blah
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: blah blah. So we were on that same time when
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: he died, though, I think I was like in a
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: dorn not even our doing what's that in doing? Yeah,
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: we were on campus and like we was in somebody's
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: dorm and people were saying it. So we went and
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: I guess like and I could be misremembering, but I
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: just remember this part. We went like one of our
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: homegirls rooms, and it was right there on MTV saying
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: all of it, like confirming it. And that's when it
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: really hit because we were just sitting there like damn,
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: like all of this back and forth and dope records
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: and disc records was exciting. But for it to end
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: like this, something was wrong, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: I know, I definitely felt like something was wrong with
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: that equation because as much as you know somebody may
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: not like tupact the things he was saying, I didn't
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: think the brother deserved to die, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: That's how I was looking at it at the time, again,
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: not having any real info. I just remember that stupid
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: ass interview with Shuvee night with the Gauze and the
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: tape right here, and he's saying nothing, you know what
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: I'm saying, Like he's not really saying anything, but his
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: eyes and his body language was just saying, we on
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: the streets people are going to die. Because that was
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: the one thing I got from the way he was.
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: He was sitting there like he wanted to say these
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: things but he cutting but he knew as an exact
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: he had to be there to speak about it. So
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: it was just really eerie and leading into the album
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: when it eventually dropped, one of the things that unfortunately
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: we most I don't know about you, I, but most
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: of us was thinking at first, do you remember bomb
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: first and how it has that? Well, of course you do,
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: but it has that intro and it was like, listen
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: right here, yeah, shot me, it's right here.
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: You listen enough, you're like, hell yeah, he just said
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: shug shot me. Now he might have said shoes shopping.
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: I don't know what.
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: I don't know what the hell that is. But I
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: what did before? I two things? Your thoughts on that?
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: But then also once you got the album.
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: What did you think overall? Yeah?
- 1:17:05Speaker 3: Man, so.
- 1:17:08Speaker 4: I think, well I would take this is It's like
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: with mcavelly, and that's what you know, That's what I
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: call it, That's what the homies call it, that's what
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: we called I never heard anybody say yo, the dog
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: Callumina mcavelly. Mcavelly. Nobody, We don't we don't. We don't
- 1:17:33Speaker 4: refer to that album. It's mcavelly, right, but I know
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: you you know you had to do your due diligence
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: because that is.
- 1:17:41Speaker 3: The real title there. Yeah, seventh Theory seven like macavelly,
- 1:17:49Speaker 3: that's what we know.
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: Yeah, So I would say that was like the introduction
- 1:17:59Speaker 4: to like this cryptic, this really cryptic conversations and hip
- 1:18:07Speaker 4: hop around music. Yeah, Tupac like got on like Elvis
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: level at that point. So yeah, man, I'll give you
- 1:18:20Speaker 4: another story, like it's like neighborhood stuff and.
- 1:18:24Speaker 3: Rest in peace of my homie Cool at that time
- 1:18:31Speaker 3: when the album dropped, like we were.
- 1:18:38Speaker 4: During that time in the culture in hip hop and Jakes,
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: I know, you know, like we would have like conversation,
- 1:18:46Speaker 4: would sit down and have the conversations about this this music,
- 1:18:52Speaker 4: you know, about the music that we that we like.
- 1:18:57Speaker 3: It's definitely different from now. I don't know what these
- 1:19:01Speaker 3: little dudes do.
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: I don't know what.
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: Kay Sanat and Aiden Ross and I don't know what
- 1:19:08Speaker 3: they do.
- 1:19:09Speaker 4: I only know what they show in their streams, And
- 1:19:14Speaker 4: I just say it's definitely different from how we used
- 1:19:19Speaker 4: to engage with this music. Like again, my homie Cool,
- 1:19:26Speaker 4: Like if I was sixteen at the time. He had
- 1:19:31Speaker 4: to have been like twelve, and like, yeah, I'll never forget,
- 1:19:38Speaker 4: like this is some neighborhood stuff we would not We
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: shouldn't have been in We should have been in.
- 1:19:43Speaker 3: The house somewhere. This was real, real late night.
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: We should have been in the house, but we was outside,
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: you know. And I'll never forget like him sitting down
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: next to me and wanting to have like a shown
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: enough conversation about Tupac this album, and like, yo, you
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: think he's still alive. Like yo, we was having like
- 1:20:06Speaker 4: a shown up, legitimate powow on Rice's Town Road at
- 1:20:13Speaker 4: probably about like two in the morning, you know. Like
- 1:20:18Speaker 4: but like that's how much this album and his music
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: was within our culture and the impacted us.
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: And we would have these conversations. This wasn't like.
- 1:20:30Speaker 4: Throwaway disposable stuff, you know. And that's why I say,
- 1:20:37Speaker 4: that's the difference. You know, That's why you know, I
- 1:20:41Speaker 4: ain't throwing those shots, but I'm just saying that's the difference.
- 1:20:43Speaker 3: Like your aiden's and.
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: Your your guys, like they engage with this music in
- 1:20:48Speaker 4: this car, it's not it's not the same.
- 1:20:50Speaker 3: So allow me a moment to get on my old man, like, Yo,
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: it's it's different. It's just it's different, you know.
- 1:20:58Speaker 4: So anyway, man, that's what I remember about the album
- 1:21:03Speaker 4: during that time when it had dropped, Like that's when
- 1:21:06Speaker 4: the cryptic stuff and like.
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: We would have conversations about it.
- 1:21:10Speaker 4: Man.
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: Now as far as like the music, I just.
- 1:21:18Speaker 4: Yo, man, Like even at sixteen, I was gonna say, like, yo,
- 1:21:23Speaker 4: this was probably.
- 1:21:26Speaker 3: My most rotated TUPAC album. It was mcavelly. This album
- 1:21:33Speaker 3: stayed and wrote, it stayed in rotation from beginning to end.
- 1:21:42Speaker 4: That album stayed in rotation, like you got those zeitgeist
- 1:21:47Speaker 4: like all I was on me was one of those too,
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: but this album and it wasn't.
- 1:21:52Speaker 3: And I know people will have that argument, well.
- 1:21:55Speaker 4: Y else because he passed away, and because of that,
- 1:21:59Speaker 4: I I don't think so. I don't feel that way.
- 1:22:02Speaker 4: I think the music was that good that that's why
- 1:22:05Speaker 4: it stayed in my rotation. Now, yes there's the cryptic things,
- 1:22:11Speaker 4: Yes there's the things that make you wonder, but I
- 1:22:14Speaker 4: think that his execution the high level, and to me,
- 1:22:19Speaker 4: this album was more chiseled, you know, more focused, and
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: it was like you know, it was right up my
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: alley that's why it stayed in the rotation the way
- 1:22:31Speaker 4: that it did for me.
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: Twelve songs, fifty nine minutes, exactly like you said, focused,
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: whereas All Eyes on Me had a lot of dope
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: joints and it had a certain vibe to it.
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: With Tupac returning. You know what I'm saying.
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: It felt like it was a good album obviously, but
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: if we could, we were shortened to the best of
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: the best.
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: Mcavelly was exactly that.
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: But it was coming off the heels of a hot
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: summer in nineteen ninety six, and Tupac had directs and
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: strays for everybody in the game, starting with bomb first right,
- 1:23:19Speaker 2: which is called my second Reply, which is just crazy.
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: And like you said, there were so many things about
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: this album, and again also coming off the fact that,
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: you know, when Tupac passed, we got the I Ain't
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: Mad at Your video with Tupac in Heaven with Marvin
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: Gaye and all these other people. So it was airy
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: from that sense because he had just passed and you
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: get this video. Now you have this album, and just
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: like your homie, everybody's thinking, like al he said, Shug
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: shot me at the beginning, and all these Easter eggs,
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: and then you know, we want to talk about this
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: one by itself. You get to the last track, which
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: I think is a way better disc record, then hit
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: him up, which is against all odds, naming people who
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: were like, that's not a Haitian Jack, that's some kind
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: of Haitian rapper.
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: Who's that? You know what I'm saying? Jimmy, who's Jimmy?
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: Jimmy Walker? Who was Tupac talking about?
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: We didn't have internet AI white folk documentaries to tell
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: us all the things about the situation. And when he
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: said this, he was talking about this and this who
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: that person was. Tupac was doing something and in a
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: very different way that fifty later on went to do
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: and wasn't even a disrespectful track. He just mentioned the
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: wrong names on record. But to your point, when his
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: Joint was coming out and when I saw the album cover,
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: there was this there was just this whole mystique around
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: this project in Tupacet who mcavelly was in real life,
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: and it's like, well, wait a minute, this nigga fact
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: is that, like it was just so much going on
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: that made it all interested, made you hang on every
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: little word he said and what's crazy is to live
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: in die La actually has a video, which is also
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: crazy considering you know what I'm saying. He wasn't really
- 1:25:35Speaker 2: around for the release of this album, and it's a
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: pretty dope video. It was just Tupac like, man, I'm
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: just walking the mall and kids going to mall me
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: and I'm a rap and that's that. But I just
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: remember when this album finally came out and I heard
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: Hell Mary, I was like, I didn't have the words
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: back then to describe what Tupac was doing. This was
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: almost like Scarface levels of mortality, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: It was like Tupac came back again, but this time
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: he had a shotgun and a lantern and shit, and
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: he just like, come with me, Hell married nigga, run quick.
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: I just thought it was dope.
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: Now, don't get me wrong again like the Outlaws, but
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: any time them niggas jump on it, make the man
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: get off this record, Man, get the other record where
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: Tupac lets you start?
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: Because he pulled me in pause with this record.
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: Instantly, I was like, this is why he's special, Like
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: like listen to this, like we heard that be what
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: made him rate that?
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: Yeah, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: That's the difference. That's an artist, right. Some dudes are
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: pro things because they're them. You know what I'm saying.
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: You know, twin glots blah blah blah nah. Tupac was like, oh,
- 1:27:06Speaker 2: this sounds like I'm collecting bodies for the graveyard, Like
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, Like this sounded different even
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: the way he was using his voice. Remember earlier I said, like,
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: not liking the double up tupockets, not this one. He
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: was all based in the mic, like, yo, come with me, Like,
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: so I really liked it, but like you said, I
- 1:27:34Speaker 2: clearly like it better than All Eyes on Me. Clearly
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: like it better for a lot of the reasons you
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: mentioned when you heard lead singles like hail Mary eventually
- 1:27:48Speaker 2: tossed it up because I forgot he had a video
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: for that also.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: And no no longer Gay Day Dre Day Reaper Dirt, Like,
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: what the hell?
- 1:28:02Speaker 3: What did you think about this? That was crazy him
- 1:28:07Speaker 3: dissing Doctor Dre.
- 1:28:09Speaker 4: I was I was shocked at that again, like I'm
- 1:28:16Speaker 4: not picking those sides, like, yo, I still like Doctor
- 1:28:21Speaker 4: Dre like you know, but it was like the music,
- 1:28:27Speaker 4: the song was so good. The music was so good.
- 1:28:30Speaker 4: It's like, damn, you got a problem with him too,
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: like like Yo, what do you do? But you don't
- 1:28:38Speaker 4: toss it up like yo you still Yeah, but I
- 1:28:41Speaker 4: was I was shocked to hear that, like damn, like
- 1:28:46Speaker 4: you just you just doctor Dre like anything was cool.
- 1:28:49Speaker 3: But again I just looked at it as like Tupac
- 1:28:55Speaker 3: being Tupac. You know, I can use the language now
- 1:28:57Speaker 3: because we in twenty twenty six, but it's like.
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: Oh, well, let me throw this in there real quick
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: as you answer, uh, because I wasn't thinking about it.
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: But we got to keep in mind by this time,
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: he had already worked with nas in the firm and
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: on Naz's come and remember Dre was like all this
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: East Coast, West Coast bulls, let's get to this music.
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: So Tupac was definitely ticked off at that because it
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: looked like, well he said it, he switched side.
- 1:29:28Speaker 3: So yeah, yeah, that's true.
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: That's true.
- 1:29:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I ain't put that put those two together. That's true.
- 1:29:36Speaker 3: That's true. It was still it's just like, Damn, I
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: don't even want you over there, like yo, you went
- 1:29:46Speaker 3: over that got yo? You with them? I'm bombing on you.
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: Too, like right, and he had left Death Row by
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: that time, so that it was some of that.
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: But I was just trying to draw the contrasts of
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: we we're listening to California Love and you hear all
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: this dre shout out from Tupac and then now we like,
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: no longer Dre day, I don't.
- 1:30:09Speaker 4: Like it, yeah, and then like now, you know, in retrospect,
- 1:30:20Speaker 4: you think back, you you know, I think Sugar Night
- 1:30:28Speaker 4: probably did not was not against mincing any words like
- 1:30:35Speaker 4: oh you want to go right ahead, like like I
- 1:30:40Speaker 4: think there probably was, you know, some encouragement.
- 1:30:43Speaker 3: They're like, yo, go it is what it is, you know.
- 1:30:48Speaker 4: So yeah, I like I liked the song and I
- 1:30:53Speaker 4: wasn't gonna stop liking doctor Dre. So it's just again
- 1:30:57Speaker 4: it's just like yo, he going off again.
- 1:31:00Speaker 3: It's like you just like you just let him go off.
- 1:31:03Speaker 3: Like I didn't look at toss it toss it up
- 1:31:07Speaker 3: the way that.
- 1:31:08Speaker 4: I looked at, uh, against all odds, toss it up,
- 1:31:14Speaker 4: but was still fun. Aaron Hall, you know, Casey and Jojo.
- 1:31:20Speaker 4: You know, even though Pop he the energy turned up
- 1:31:23Speaker 4: at the end like he's still rotten, but it still.
- 1:31:28Speaker 3: Was like a fun song.
- 1:31:29Speaker 4: But this album was just more militant, even on the
- 1:31:34Speaker 4: on the Party, the Party record, like yo, yeah, militant,
- 1:31:42Speaker 4: aggressive and just on on on wartime, and then you
- 1:31:46Speaker 4: get those couple of pockets in between where you know,
- 1:31:52Speaker 4: I'll slow it down just a little bit because I'm
- 1:31:56Speaker 4: just saying what's on my mind for this particular song.
- 1:31:59Speaker 3: But it's still all fit so.
- 1:32:01Speaker 4: And that's why I wanted to get around as far
- 1:32:04Speaker 4: as like production, because they always used to be like
- 1:32:08Speaker 4: this discussion around with y'all your beats.
- 1:32:12Speaker 3: I don't really like your beats like that, like what's
- 1:32:16Speaker 3: up with his beats?
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:32:19Speaker 3: And I remember again shouts out to my people's Jeff
- 1:32:24Speaker 3: rest of Pees.
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: We talked about that. We had a show enough sit
- 1:32:28Speaker 4: down and he was even saying like, hey, your people
- 1:32:31Speaker 4: be talking about twupop beats, but like, yo, they just
- 1:32:34Speaker 4: they different. They not gonna be the same as like
- 1:32:36Speaker 4: Buckshot and nas in them. Like he got a different approach.
- 1:32:43Speaker 4: And at the time, we don't know better, We don't know.
- 1:32:46Speaker 3: Exactly what it is. We just like it's different. But
- 1:32:50Speaker 3: now being grown, I know what it is.
- 1:32:54Speaker 4: He there was a more of a musicality to his beats,
- 1:32:58Speaker 4: like live instrumentation with the beats, so they were more
- 1:33:03Speaker 4: fluent and built up, and you know, it wasn't like
- 1:33:08Speaker 4: there was samples there too, and the hip that hip
- 1:33:12Speaker 4: hop boom back part of it was there in a
- 1:33:16Speaker 4: different way, but it was way more musicality that I
- 1:33:20Speaker 4: think influence is like what we see some of what today,
- 1:33:24Speaker 4: like you mentioned earlier, like a gn X, Like this
- 1:33:29Speaker 4: is direct influence to something like GNX. You know. So yeah, man,
- 1:33:38Speaker 4: so I just wanted to say that around his beats,
- 1:33:41Speaker 4: around that conversation and as always this conversation around him
- 1:33:46Speaker 4: being lyrical or not or like, yo, could he really
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: rap like that?
- 1:33:51Speaker 3: And it's like, yo, man, I think we confused.
- 1:33:55Speaker 4: Like yes, he had his style, and his style was
- 1:33:59Speaker 4: to get you to feel the music like this theatric,
- 1:34:04Speaker 4: I want you to feel it, but yo, could he
- 1:34:07Speaker 4: get at pockets?
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: Like in my opinion, me and my girlfriend.
- 1:34:14Speaker 4: Is the direct response to I gave you power, and
- 1:34:18Speaker 4: it's like, yes, I got words for nas and I
- 1:34:22Speaker 4: can get on my battle, but no on my hip hop,
- 1:34:27Speaker 4: Like oh, I see what you're doing. All right, that's
- 1:34:31Speaker 4: what we I'm gonna go do this with me and my.
- 1:34:35Speaker 8: Girlfriend and it's like, yo, that this is this is crazy,
- 1:34:40Speaker 8: like it is a direct you kind of know, like
- 1:34:43Speaker 8: with your NASA this, but yo, this he's talking about.
- 1:34:46Speaker 8: This is this woman forty five but she's still live,
- 1:34:49Speaker 8: Like hold on again, I was just gonna go ahead
- 1:34:54Speaker 8: and take that back or just get you to come
- 1:34:56Speaker 8: over here.
- 1:34:58Speaker 4: And that's MCing to me move the crowd. So this
- 1:35:03Speaker 4: whole thing is I guess people want to revise, and
- 1:35:06Speaker 4: I get it. Some people don't look at Tupac that way.
- 1:35:11Speaker 3: I got it. I get it, But come on, yo,
- 1:35:15Speaker 3: like it. It was there.
- 1:35:16Speaker 4: Those things were there as far as technique and then well,
- 1:35:22Speaker 4: I guess we'll say the best for last like that
- 1:35:26Speaker 4: against all odds.
- 1:35:28Speaker 3: I mean, that's probably he says, the realistic he ever wrote.
- 1:35:31Speaker 4: That's probably top five Tupac song definitely, if not number one,
- 1:35:37Speaker 4: you know what I'm saying, top five, definitely in the
- 1:35:40Speaker 4: top five. I guess on the hip hop hippity hop
- 1:35:44Speaker 4: hop right rabbity rapping could be number one, you know,
- 1:35:49Speaker 4: but like within his catalog top five songs, it definitely
- 1:35:54Speaker 4: got going in you know, Larry Holmes flabby and sick
- 1:35:58Speaker 4: like yo, he was yep, he was dubbing.
- 1:36:01Speaker 3: Out on it.
- 1:36:05Speaker 4: So those are just like my thoughts music musicality wise
- 1:36:10Speaker 4: for mcavelly. Overall vibe wartime, I think it's quintessential Tupac,
- 1:36:19Speaker 4: Like you want, you want, Tupac, You're gonna get all
- 1:36:24Speaker 4: of it in this this album right.
- 1:36:28Speaker 3: And bittersweet for.
- 1:36:31Speaker 4: Sure because you mentioned it earlier, like damn, like yo,
- 1:36:35Speaker 4: we got all of this, the delivery sharp you want
- 1:36:40Speaker 4: it like it even looks or appears like we got
- 1:36:46Speaker 4: things to look forward to in the future or where
- 1:36:49Speaker 4: you want to go, and it's and it's gone because
- 1:36:52Speaker 4: of you know, the lifestyle that came with you know
- 1:36:57Speaker 4: how he was approaching this this music.
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's interesting because I know like songs. Well,
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: for one, let's just say this. The other thing with
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: Doctor Dre was Black Streets No Diggity was the original
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: beat for Toss It Up, and I Black Street wound
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: up dropping with Dre rapping on it.
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: By the way, No Diggity, which is.
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: A crazy beat, infuriated Tupac, so he dropped this beat
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: that has the same vibe.
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: With singers on it.
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: But Tupac is letting it be known there will be
- 1:37:43Speaker 2: no subliminals on this record, I'm taking a direct shot
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: at Tupac. I mean doctor Dre so they were you know,
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: there was that then there, you know, like you said,
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: with me and my girlfriend.
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie.
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: Most people that I know thought, oh, he's just gonna
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: bite off or now, like not a couple of months ago,
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: Na just did this. I Gave You Power was like
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: the one song that everybody was talking about, and now
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: Tupac's doing this. But me being the aries, I'm like,
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: what's going on here? Because all eyes on me, same beat,
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: street dreams.
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: Then I hear I give you Power.
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: Then Tupac spend the block and come back with me
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: and my girlfriend. I don't think it was a matter
- 1:38:29Speaker 2: of biting, like I said. I think it was a
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: matter of I got your chain, what you're gonna do
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: about it? And I'm not gonna sound like I can't
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: do this, you know what I'm saying, Like I could,
- 1:38:46Speaker 2: I could rap too, I could flip it on something
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: else also, and the whole lyrical thing, I think to
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: your point because I used to say that also, but
- 1:38:55Speaker 2: I think it was just about the definition and really
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: it's more about we could use the songs.
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: Right, I gave you power.
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: It's a lot more about technique than it is about
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: pure feeling with the gun. It's more Nas is really
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: intricate in explaining the life of this gun, and you know,
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: and tying that to something relatable like a human being, right,
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: and the feelings of the gun. Whereas Tupac is doing
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: the same thing. But it's like I'm taking my girlfriend
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: with me and that's how she and sometimes she'd be
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: yelling at niggas a couple of times, you know what
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: I'm saying.
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: So it was almost in any other.
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: Situation where there wasn't somewhat of a beef there, it
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: would be looked at as inspiration. And you know, Nads
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: in my opinion, especially knowing this personality, would commend it
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: because it's almost like an extension of that idea. The
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: thing what I gave you power, right, straight, bullet by
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: organized confusion existed before I gave you power, and that
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: was ill to me. Like they're describing a bullet traveling
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: in the air, it's people in hitting things, or I
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: gave you power.
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: Whether Na's heard it or not, that was the first
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: thing I thought when I heard I gave you power.
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: I was like, oh, this is like like organized Confusion joint. Okay.
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: So, and you know, again, when we say these things,
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: like I said earlier, we just had different hip hop
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: discussions where the heads right, the heads are like, do
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: you even know who organized Confusion is? Like, you know
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: what I'm saying is one of even me saying the name,
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: even if I never heard of it. If I said
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: organized Confusion, he would be like, oh, those would be
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: the niggas to do it, Like you know what I'm saying,
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: he would know. So I think in a lot of ways,
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: there was a lot of conversation around it, but you know,
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: Tupac was throwing in all these you know, these joints
- 1:41:07Speaker 2: and these East eggs and stuff like that, and even
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: songs like white Man's World mm hmm. Where I was
- 1:41:14Speaker 2: it felt like me against the world. Tupac is back,
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. Even yeah, right, only years ago,
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: thirty years ago, Tupac the only one like, hey, y'all
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: forgot this bill.
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: This bill been sitting here. We're supposed to get these reparations.
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: So yeah, Like, really, when you think about it as
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: an album, it's it has a It has a lot
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: of the same things going on for it that were
- 1:41:45Speaker 2: in all eyes on me, but just condensed, you know
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: what I'm saying, except for the you know, the direct shots.
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: But let's just get to the elephant in the room
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: real quick. Okay, the album is coming to it.
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: And I heard about Against All Odds before I actually
- 1:42:07Speaker 2: heard it, Like I heard niggas like, so I'm patiently
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: going through bomb first and held Mary.
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: I'm like, he got Tupac got some heat at the
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: end of this. Let me just listen.
- 1:42:22Speaker 2: When I heard Against All Odds again, this was another
- 1:42:25Speaker 2: hell Mary moment. When he said this is the realest
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: shit I ever wrote, I felt that, like as an
- 1:42:33Speaker 2: MC at the time, I felt that like Tupac about
- 1:42:37Speaker 2: to say some shit and it ain't just ride on
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: my enemies and Hennessy and all that. He about to
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: say something. And like we said earlier, I didn't know.
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: I knew of something. I knew of Haitian Jack, but
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: I didn't know all the intricacies and I didn't know
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: what people were doing. I was kind of Tupac was
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: kind of the god, I'm like, whatnot say, little nigga
- 1:43:02Speaker 2: name Na Stinky, Like when he was saying all that
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: I'm like, what what happened?
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: Like you know what I'm saying? Like chay Zai, Like
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: I was like, what what's going on?
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: But I think again for me hearing this record in
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: all of these shots at rappers throughout that album, but
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: it wasn't until he started naming the street dudes. And
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: when Tupac said, you said you can't go to war
- 1:43:30Speaker 2: unless you got your money right, Well I got my
- 1:43:32Speaker 2: money right, And I was like, what is he talking about?
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: Like you know what I'm saying.
- 1:43:38Speaker 2: So I when you first heard Against All Odds? Did
- 1:43:42Speaker 2: did you know everything that was happening in the song
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: that Tupac was talking about?
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: Nah?
- 1:43:48Speaker 3: No, absolutely not. I just thought that I thought that
- 1:43:58Speaker 3: the dudes he was mentioned, did think that they were
- 1:44:01Speaker 3: street dudes? I didn't. I didn't think they were rappers.
- 1:44:08Speaker 3: But I thought.
- 1:44:13Speaker 4: That now this has gotten more. But by that time
- 1:44:17Speaker 4: he had passed away. But this you're now, this is
- 1:44:22Speaker 4: spilling into something. It's spilling into something else now like
- 1:44:29Speaker 4: the rapping and you know, being competitive, that was one thing,
- 1:44:34Speaker 4: but like, yo, you're starting to mention these these other names,
- 1:44:38Speaker 4: like I like, I think you mentioned it earlier, Like Yo,
- 1:44:41Speaker 4: I never heard of this guy is a is a rapper,
- 1:44:45Speaker 4: you know. So it was at that point, I'm like, okay,
- 1:44:49Speaker 4: Like he he mentioned it, like he talked me getting
- 1:44:53Speaker 4: in like street legitimate street stuff, and he's still he's
- 1:44:58Speaker 4: still bombing, Like he's still bombing.
- 1:45:02Speaker 3: I you know, at that point.
- 1:45:05Speaker 4: He was already passed, you know, so I think it
- 1:45:10Speaker 4: hearing that, it was like, well, you know, any of
- 1:45:14Speaker 4: them got something to do with him pass it like
- 1:45:17Speaker 4: it was.
- 1:45:19Speaker 3: It just added more to the to the mystique.
- 1:45:23Speaker 4: And again just a lot going on, a lot going on,
- 1:45:30Speaker 4: you know, and again bittersweet because the song is crazy,
- 1:45:37Speaker 4: but it definitely goes to show.
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: You like.
- 1:45:41Speaker 4: He had a lot going on, a lot on that
- 1:45:43Speaker 4: brother's mind. He was getting jammed up and a lot
- 1:45:46Speaker 4: of things that didn't have it wasn't music. It probably
- 1:45:53Speaker 4: the music is what connected him to those things. And
- 1:45:56Speaker 4: because of hip hop, we've got this, you know, it's
- 1:46:03Speaker 4: innate connection to the street. Like it's just the good,
- 1:46:08Speaker 4: the bad, and the ugly about hip hop, Like it
- 1:46:11Speaker 4: has a connection to the street. And unfortunately, yeah, that
- 1:46:17Speaker 4: man you know, felt that strongly about it.
- 1:46:21Speaker 3: Well, yeah, I'm gonna bring it.
- 1:46:24Speaker 4: I'm just gonna express myself and and bring it on
- 1:46:27Speaker 4: the record too, but it's like, yeah, you're going out
- 1:46:30Speaker 4: a whole nother another path, like you know, we might
- 1:46:36Speaker 4: not need it to go there, but he's expressing himself.
- 1:46:40Speaker 4: And then again by that point, he was gone anyway.
- 1:46:44Speaker 3: By that point, yeah, you.
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: And that's that's so crazy to me because I remember
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: listening to that song for the first time and it
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: was like a switch went off of my brain, Like
- 1:46:56Speaker 2: you know, I've been listening. I'm listening to him this
- 1:46:59Speaker 2: producers and rappers and like the whole album, and I'm
- 1:47:03Speaker 2: you know, and I'm listening for some of that because
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: he keep giving it to us. So I'm like, well
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: what that means?
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: Who's that? Blah blah?
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: But like you said, then all of a sudden, that
- 1:47:11Speaker 2: song get much darker and I'm like, oh wait, who
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: are these guys?
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: And I don't know. Yeah, he talk about snitches and
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: all that.
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: But for those like who are watching whether and again,
- 1:47:28Speaker 2: whether you were old enough but you wasn't into this
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: music or into hip hop around that time, or you know,
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: you weren't even born one thing that and even if
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: you were outside one thing, people got to keep in
- 1:47:44Speaker 2: mind because it feels like after Tupac died and after
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: this album came out and all the theories about him
- 1:47:51Speaker 2: being alive and who who might have killed him and
- 1:47:54Speaker 2: all that stuff.
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: The Quad Studio shooting and the fact that.
- 1:48:04Speaker 2: Pac made a lot of people East Coast to believe
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: that Bad Boy Biggie and Puff specifically had something to
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: do with him getting shot.
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: It felt like that carried forward after Pak's death.
- 1:48:19Speaker 2: That scenario. The Vibe articles also did that damage. But
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: his Tupac on this record set me up, wetting me
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: up but couldn't shut me up. But he not talking
- 1:48:30Speaker 2: to them, Yeah, he talking to Jimmy Henchman.
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: Yeah. And we and most of us didn't know who
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: that was.
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: So it was kind of unfortunate because it was almost
- 1:48:42Speaker 2: as if we were more comfortable going with the people
- 1:48:45Speaker 2: we knew because of the celebrity than Tupac telling you
- 1:48:50Speaker 2: in this record, this is who set me up, you know,
- 1:48:54Speaker 2: and this is who did this.
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: So it again something else to.
- 1:49:01Speaker 4: Your point, I mean to cut you off, M I
- 1:49:04Speaker 4: notice about this this latest listen and preparing for our
- 1:49:08Speaker 4: talk today.
- 1:49:10Speaker 3: I noticed, and you let me know what you think.
- 1:49:13Speaker 3: But it felt to me that.
- 1:49:16Speaker 4: He didn't even go at to me, didn't go at
- 1:49:21Speaker 4: Biggie as much on this. He leaned in the puff
- 1:49:28Speaker 4: and the diddy, but he didn't.
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: If there was no.
- 1:49:33Speaker 4: Calling out his his name, I think maybe Balfrod. I
- 1:49:37Speaker 4: gotta go back and listen, but definitely not on against
- 1:49:41Speaker 4: all odds right, he had air and opportunity, but no,
- 1:49:46Speaker 4: he focused, like we said, he focused on the specific people.
- 1:49:53Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:49:54Speaker 2: So he also said it's not about east and west.
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: But somehow how that carried over even though Tupac just
- 1:50:03Speaker 2: said it, yeah.
- 1:50:05Speaker 3: Yeah, he did, yeah right in the beginning.
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: Hmm.
- 1:50:12Speaker 2: What so with this album again, twelve songs, fifty nine minutes,
- 1:50:17Speaker 2: you know, some memorable tracks. Tupac is on ten before
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: that was the saying he was on ten at the
- 1:50:25Speaker 2: start of nineteen ninety six, Like as soon as he
- 1:50:29Speaker 2: got in there, it's like, oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, damn,
- 1:50:34Speaker 2: what are some of your favorite songs off of this album?
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: And you know, considering when it dropped, how it just
- 1:50:42Speaker 2: stayed in your rotation? What was it like going back
- 1:50:45Speaker 2: and listening to it.
- 1:50:48Speaker 4: Yeah, man, it definitely the teenage the teenager. It definitely
- 1:50:56Speaker 4: brought brought that back. Both of the both albums Life
- 1:51:02Speaker 4: of an Outlaw, I think that's like, my it's crazy.
- 1:51:06Speaker 4: I just was talking about against owe so much. But
- 1:51:10Speaker 4: I just as like as a.
- 1:51:14Speaker 3: Teenager at that time, that chorus and that energy.
- 1:51:20Speaker 4: You know, this life we live as thugs. Everybody messing
- 1:51:24Speaker 4: with us. So can't you see it's hard to be
- 1:51:27Speaker 4: a man riding with my guns and had like that.
- 1:51:32Speaker 4: I don't know that, like spoke to my soul during
- 1:51:35Speaker 4: that during that time, Like so.
- 1:51:37Speaker 9: Life of Our Outlaw was one of my favorites, me
- 1:51:41Speaker 9: and my girlfriend. And again like yo, I honestly think
- 1:51:46Speaker 9: that was an answer to I gave you power. I
- 1:51:51Speaker 9: don't know if he would have made that if he
- 1:51:54Speaker 9: didn't feel some type of competitives competing with I don't
- 1:52:01Speaker 9: know if he would it did that, who knows, right
- 1:52:07Speaker 9: against all odds, we we chopped it up on that
- 1:52:10Speaker 9: for sure. And to live and die in l a
- 1:52:13Speaker 9: man like when I visited La for the first time
- 1:52:19Speaker 9: as a grown man.
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: Mm hmm. That it was.
- 1:52:24Speaker 3: It was that song, like.
- 1:52:27Speaker 4: It's like, yeah, man, you you the weather, you know,
- 1:52:35Speaker 4: just the vibe, the views.
- 1:52:41Speaker 3: I understand where that song came from. For sure.
- 1:52:45Speaker 4: It sounds like it looks like it feels like what
- 1:52:48Speaker 4: that song sounds like, you know, So those are like
- 1:52:54Speaker 4: my standouts. But yeah, I mean quite frankly, the album
- 1:53:00Speaker 4: to me, it's.
- 1:53:00Speaker 3: A five out of five.
- 1:53:02Speaker 4: Like there's no skips, Like to me, I could I
- 1:53:09Speaker 4: could maybe skip, just like Daddy maybe, you know, but
- 1:53:16Speaker 4: like if I'm cleaning up or something, I let it.
- 1:53:18Speaker 3: I let it play.
- 1:53:20Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:53:23Speaker 4: I think this is like a five out of five
- 1:53:25Speaker 4: and what's crazy? And I'm gonna throw it over to you, Vegas.
- 1:53:29Speaker 4: It was crazy and preparing for this and you know,
- 1:53:33Speaker 4: I got the Wikipedia, so I know the titles of
- 1:53:36Speaker 4: the songs and all.
- 1:53:37Speaker 3: That, and and the production and knowing who produced what.
- 1:53:44Speaker 4: I noticed where there's you know, always a section about
- 1:53:48Speaker 4: the reception. And this was the first time ever I
- 1:53:54Speaker 4: paid attention to any reviews regarding the album. So I
- 1:53:59Speaker 4: read and people like a two out of five for
- 1:54:03Speaker 4: some of the reviews, and you know.
- 1:54:06Speaker 3: This CD was just not good. I was just like, yo, yeah, nah,
- 1:54:12Speaker 3: sixteen Yo, I don't know none of what y'all talking about.
- 1:54:17Speaker 3: Nobody around me knew any.
- 1:54:20Speaker 4: Of that because this was heavy heavy and be more
- 1:54:25Speaker 4: heavy rotation cars ridden by heavy heavy.
- 1:54:32Speaker 2: That's so crazy. To even think about. I don't I
- 1:54:36Speaker 2: don't remember, like I don't remember what the source gave it.
- 1:54:40Speaker 2: I don't remember anybody saying too yo' that's just disrespectful,
- 1:54:46Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying.
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: But it's just now. I remember maybe reviews where.
- 1:54:56Speaker 2: It's they felt like it seemed like a collection of
- 1:55:00Speaker 2: songs as opposed to a complete concept of an album.
- 1:55:07Speaker 2: But around that time, you know, postumous albums were typically
- 1:55:11Speaker 2: like that, right, like if somebody passed. Not that many
- 1:55:14Speaker 2: rappers passed away, but it was like, you know what
- 1:55:17Speaker 2: we got left kind.
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: Of feeling this was weird, No, not at all.
- 1:55:26Speaker 2: And then also we know what happened when this drought
- 1:55:29Speaker 2: we got mc mcavelly two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve,
- 1:55:37Speaker 2: Macabelly returns. But we realized Supac had way more music
- 1:55:44Speaker 2: in the tuck than just this. But I agree, I
- 1:55:49Speaker 2: feel like I like albums like this. I like twelve
- 1:55:53Speaker 2: songs one hour. Mission statement. His mission statement was one thing.
- 1:55:58Speaker 2: It was almost as like after a summer in ninety
- 1:56:03Speaker 2: six of some East Coast dudes punching back and maybe
- 1:56:08Speaker 2: a couple of publications not really wanting to deal with
- 1:56:11Speaker 2: him because feeling like violence was following him and what
- 1:56:14Speaker 2: could happen and blah blah blah, And this was kind
- 1:56:19Speaker 2: of like a diary type joint, you know what I'm saying,
- 1:56:22Speaker 2: Like I'm gonna just do these other joints, but standouts
- 1:56:26Speaker 2: for me, you know, Hail Mary to Live and Die
- 1:56:29Speaker 2: in LA was just like you are real quick and
- 1:56:33Speaker 2: if you're still watching, we appreciate you. But I'll tag
- 1:56:37Speaker 2: a video at the end. When I visited the TUPAC
- 1:56:40Speaker 2: exhibit in LA and which was excellent, like even from
- 1:56:46Speaker 2: down to the section that had his like rhyms, and
- 1:56:49Speaker 2: it wasn't all songs we knew, it was like concepts,
- 1:56:53Speaker 2: Like you could see his brain working if you looked
- 1:56:55Speaker 2: at enough of those books. But the entire time I
- 1:57:00Speaker 2: was dead, I was only playing park and it was
- 1:57:06Speaker 2: all eyes on me and mcavelly. And I don't know
- 1:57:09Speaker 2: why I didn't plan that shit, but like you said it,
- 1:57:14Speaker 2: and I think it was ironic because I didn't know
- 1:57:16Speaker 2: that exhibit was.
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: Going to be across the street from the hotel.
- 1:57:20Speaker 2: It was just as I was rolling up, you know,
- 1:57:22Speaker 2: I didn't see it at first, but in the morning
- 1:57:25Speaker 2: I went outside for coffee, and I was like, oh,
- 1:57:28Speaker 2: it's a mcavelly exhibit, but I was already it's my
- 1:57:31Speaker 2: first time in LA, so I'm thinking of every West
- 1:57:34Speaker 2: Coast album and song and artists that I love, and
- 1:57:37Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, I'm head. But the Tupac just kind
- 1:57:41Speaker 2: of took over. Excuse me, especially because of the exhibit,
- 1:57:47Speaker 2: but what else me and my girlfriend and obviously against
- 1:57:53Speaker 2: all odds, dope show men nineteen ninety six Tupac, You'll
- 1:58:05Speaker 2: never see that ever again.
- 1:58:07Speaker 3: Never thirty years, yo, and thirty years I mean that?
- 1:58:14Speaker 2: How that.
- 1:58:16Speaker 3: What a time to be alive? Man?
- 1:58:18Speaker 1: Like you know that.
- 1:58:21Speaker 3: That's what I was getting at earlier.
- 1:58:23Speaker 4: Man, you know these streamers and these dudes man like yo, y'all,
- 1:58:29Speaker 4: I mean you know how your fun. But yeah, the
- 1:58:33Speaker 4: way we engage with this and how it was going
- 1:58:37Speaker 4: down and like it is just different. It's just different.
- 1:58:42Speaker 4: And like you said, I don't think it happens. It
- 1:58:46Speaker 4: don't happen again. It don't happen again like this.
- 1:58:50Speaker 2: That was just it was just too unique of a
- 1:58:53Speaker 2: situation because again, I'm going to be doing this every
- 1:58:57Speaker 2: month with another guest talking about it. Album from nineteen
- 1:59:00Speaker 2: ninety six and honestly, when you look at all that
- 1:59:04Speaker 2: was happening around Tupac's run, his final run, we didn't
- 1:59:10Speaker 2: know it was, but his final run in ninety six,
- 1:59:14Speaker 2: and how he was the main one throwing direct shots.
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying.
- 1:59:20Speaker 2: With some of his music, you're just not gonna see
- 1:59:25Speaker 2: anything like it was a hip hop moment that was
- 1:59:27Speaker 2: unique to that time and that artist. Now for those
- 1:59:31Speaker 2: younger feeling like, oh what we have I had Drake
- 1:59:34Speaker 2: and Kendrick, because we never see.
- 1:59:36Speaker 1: Nothing like that.
- 1:59:37Speaker 4: That's true, Like, that's true, back to back to bat,
- 1:59:41Speaker 4: y'all got y'all will I don't think that that ever
- 1:59:44Speaker 4: happens again.
- 1:59:45Speaker 2: That never happens again. You have this battle that goes
- 1:59:49Speaker 2: on like this, back back and forth, and then you
- 1:59:52Speaker 2: have just we already know what happened, but you have
- 1:59:56Speaker 2: the Grammys involved, the super Bowl involved, the court system involved.
- 2:00:03Speaker 3: Forgot about that, yo, Like that's so far away from
- 2:00:08Speaker 3: a bond.
- 2:00:09Speaker 1: Right right. Look another rapper just being like I don't
- 2:00:13Speaker 1: want nothing to do with this, peace y know.
- 2:00:15Speaker 4: I was just gonna try to like help them end
- 2:00:18Speaker 4: it on a positive note to say, yeah, and you
- 2:00:20Speaker 4: know what, all them brothers walked away and anything was
- 2:00:24Speaker 4: you know what I mean in comparison, right, then I
- 2:00:27Speaker 4: forgot like, well, yeah, walked away and went to the courts.
- 2:00:30Speaker 1: Like gold the cops.
- 2:00:36Speaker 2: So we should be happy. Look, nobody died, but this
- 2:00:41Speaker 2: is hip hop. Somebody died, and we know who he is.
- 2:00:47Speaker 2: He's been trying to come back and every time we
- 2:00:51Speaker 2: come This is probably the third podcast I said this on.
- 2:00:55Speaker 2: But it's just it's obviously it's like a study. But
- 2:01:02Speaker 2: and it happened to Joe Rule, but with Drake. Me
- 2:01:06Speaker 2: as a Drake fan, having like my own little best
- 2:01:09Speaker 2: of Drake playlists and all of that. Every time I
- 2:01:12Speaker 2: try to go back, like it's enough time, man le
- 2:01:16Speaker 2: stall him out, depot let me play this joint. As
- 2:01:19Speaker 2: soon as he start rapping, I'd be like, man, shut up, nigga.
- 2:01:24Speaker 2: And I like Drake, you know what I'm saying. I
- 2:01:26Speaker 2: liked him, but it's something like I said, it's something
- 2:01:32Speaker 2: you'll never experience again. It's a time and a moment
- 2:01:36Speaker 2: in hip hop that was unique and anything else it
- 2:01:40Speaker 2: was unique, like you know, Jadakiss getting busy at the
- 2:01:43Speaker 2: versus while we're dealing with a global pandemic.
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying.
- 2:01:48Speaker 2: It's so it's one of those moments in hip hop
- 2:01:52Speaker 2: that this is why we do episodes like this. So
- 2:01:56Speaker 2: anybody who ignored the situation or had it wrong around
- 2:02:00Speaker 2: on the time, or didn't know or you wasn't born.
- 2:02:05Speaker 2: All of the things we said here happened in real time.
- 2:02:10Speaker 2: And it's easy to look at Tupac off of all
- 2:02:17Speaker 2: of the things you've learned about him over the years,
- 2:02:19Speaker 2: but you don't know what it was like to have
- 2:02:21Speaker 2: him outside while you're alive. Like you can go to
- 2:02:25Speaker 2: a show and see Tupac perform some of these records,
- 2:02:29Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, and know that there was
- 2:02:32Speaker 2: tension in the air because of the East West Coast thing.
- 2:02:36Speaker 2: But nevertheless, two albums in nineteen ninety six, Get Out
- 2:02:41Speaker 2: of Jail, signed to a record label, take Over the
- 2:02:44Speaker 2: Rap Game, go platinum with both albums and all of that.
- 2:02:50Speaker 2: You know, oh, because he passed away, nah Man, We
- 2:02:53Speaker 2: just talked about these records. The songs was hot, hel
- 2:02:58Speaker 2: Mary is still on the radio. Toss It Up is
- 2:03:01Speaker 2: still on the radio in New York. When I listened
- 2:03:07Speaker 2: to the Block, which is like old school joint, toss
- 2:03:11Speaker 2: it Up came on yesterday, Wow, and I was just like,
- 2:03:16Speaker 2: this is an album that was whack.
- 2:03:19Speaker 4: Yeah, oh nah yeah two point five. I said too earlier.
- 2:03:23Speaker 4: I'm looking for all music. I ain't gonna say the
- 2:03:26Speaker 4: dudes name he gave. He gave it a two point
- 2:03:28Speaker 4: five stars. Tell about it was like exploitive because, like
- 2:03:33Speaker 4: you said, that whole posthumus it sounded like it was
- 2:03:36Speaker 4: like put together, and it's like.
- 2:03:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't.
- 2:03:39Speaker 2: I mean, okay, so that's a rating for the marketing
- 2:03:42Speaker 2: department at Death Row. That's not rating the music saying
- 2:03:47Speaker 2: it's exploitive. It's like, I mean, the dog the dude
- 2:03:51Speaker 2: was working on the album before he passed. They're putting
- 2:03:54Speaker 2: it out.
- 2:03:55Speaker 3: It's not Ai like he did Judos Salts.
- 2:04:00Speaker 1: He said all of that.
- 2:04:01Speaker 2: He said all of that, right, chrazy, I go looking
- 2:04:06Speaker 2: for coming through and breaking down these two albums in
- 2:04:11Speaker 2: Tupac and General in nineteen ninety six. Let us know
- 2:04:14Speaker 2: what y'all thought about that whole Tupac run that year.
- 2:04:19Speaker 2: You know, were you on the side, Like a lot
- 2:04:21Speaker 2: of people you know ever visited his history. But I
- 2:04:24Speaker 2: know some people straight up like big matters and that's it.
- 2:04:31Speaker 2: We don't like him. We don't like POC and they
- 2:04:34Speaker 2: not just dudes. One lives in my house. Oh not feeling,
- 2:04:39Speaker 2: not feeling all of that. She's still this day. This
- 2:04:42Speaker 2: is why I like Bickie Moore, Like, what do I
- 2:04:44Speaker 2: ask you that?
- 2:04:45Speaker 1: Really?
- 2:04:45Speaker 2: But you know, gen X, we'd be holding on the grudgets,
- 2:04:51Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, Like, I'll be trying to
- 2:04:53Speaker 2: enjoy pop and.
- 2:04:54Speaker 3: She's like, forget about it.
- 2:04:58Speaker 2: I like some of it, but big say this and
- 2:05:01Speaker 2: do this. But so some of it still exists, but
- 2:05:04Speaker 2: it's all hip hop. You know what I'm saying again,
- 2:05:09Speaker 2: are looking out for coming through?
