- 0:17Speaker 1: the public domain recording by expatriate in Bangor, Maine. Section
- 0:23Speaker 1: thirty six one. May hear how gold is metaphorically called
- 0:29Speaker 1: Fula's snood in this verse which ivender Skuld Despoiler wrought
- 0:35Speaker 1: Fula's shining filet the forehead sun at rising shown on
- 0:40Speaker 1: the swelling shield hill. For skalds all hawk Cones life
- 0:44Speaker 1: days section thirty seven, gold is called Freya's tears. As
- 0:51Speaker 1: was said before, so sang Scully torsteinsun Many, a fearless swordsman,
- 0:57Speaker 1: received the tears of Freya the o' the morn when
- 1:01Speaker 1: Foemen we murdered, we were present. And as Ininar Sculasen
- 1:05Speaker 1: sang where mounted TwixT the carvings the tear of Mardoulieth,
- 1:11Speaker 1: we bear the axe shields splitting swollen with serpent's lair gold.
- 1:17Speaker 1: And here Ininar has further paraphrase Freya so as to
- 1:20Speaker 1: call her mother a pnos or wife of Oder as
- 1:24Speaker 1: standeth below the shield tempests strong rufice with tear gold
- 1:30Speaker 1: is unminished eye reign of Oder's bed mate, his age
- 1:34Speaker 1: the king so useth. And again thus Horn's child the
- 1:40Speaker 1: glorious adornment I own gold wound, a jewel most fair
- 1:45Speaker 1: to the shield's rim. Fast is the golden sea flame
- 1:49Speaker 1: on the gem. Freyer's niece the tear drift of the
- 1:53Speaker 1: forehead of her mother. She bears the raven Feeder gave
- 1:57Speaker 1: me Frodi's seed, gold's fostering. It is also recorded here
- 2:03Speaker 1: that one may paraphrase Freya by calling her sister of Frere,
- 2:08Speaker 1: and thus also a defense of songs full goodly. He
- 2:12Speaker 1: freely gave me neighbor of sea scales. I praise gladly
- 2:17Speaker 1: Nuider's daughter's golden gem child. Here she is called daughter
- 2:22Speaker 1: of Nirder. And again thus the awesome stately Urger of Odin,
- 2:27Speaker 1: He who raises the struggle stern, gave to me the
- 2:31Speaker 1: courage stalwart daughter of the vanabride my fair axe. The
- 2:36Speaker 1: valorous sword. Mote's ruler led Geffen's girl to the Skald's
- 2:40Speaker 1: bed set with the sea flames gold work. Here she
- 2:45Speaker 1: is called Geffen and bride of the Vanier. It is
- 2:48Speaker 1: proper to join tears with all the names of Freya,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and to call gold by such terms, and in diverse ways.
- 2:56Speaker 1: These paraphrases have been varied, so that gold is called
- 3:00Speaker 1: or rain or snowstorm, or drops or showers or waterfalls
- 3:05Speaker 1: of fraya's eyes or cheeks, or brows or eyelids section
- 3:10Speaker 1: thirty eight. In this place one may hear that gold
- 3:14Speaker 1: is called word or voice of giants. As we have
- 3:17Speaker 1: said before, Thus sang Broggy the Skald. Then had I
- 3:22Speaker 1: the third friend, fairly praised the poorest in the voice
- 3:25Speaker 1: of the botched nobs Ali. But best of all to
- 3:29Speaker 1: me he called a rock botched knob and a giant
- 3:34Speaker 1: Ali of rock and gold voice of the giant Section
- 3:39Speaker 1: thirty nine. For what reason is gold called otter's where gild?
- 3:45Speaker 1: It is related that when certain of the esir Odin
- 3:48Speaker 1: and Loki and he Neer went forth to explore the earth,
- 3:52Speaker 1: they came to a certain river and proceeded along the
- 3:55Speaker 1: river to a waterfall. And beside the fall was an
- 3:58Speaker 1: otter which had take make and a salmon from the fall,
- 4:01Speaker 1: and was eating, blinking his eyes the while Then Loki
- 4:05Speaker 1: took up a stone and cast it at the otter
- 4:08Speaker 1: and struck its head. And Loki boasted in his catch
- 4:12Speaker 1: that he had got otter and salmon with one blow.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Then they took up the salmon and the otter and
- 4:18Speaker 1: bore them along with them, And coming to the buildings
- 4:21Speaker 1: of a certain farm, they went in. Now the husbandman
- 4:24Speaker 1: who dwelt there was named Hriedmar. He was a man
- 4:28Speaker 1: of much substance and very skilled in black magic. The
- 4:32Speaker 1: esir asked him for a night's lodging, saying that they
- 4:35Speaker 1: had sufficient food with them, and showed him their catch.
- 4:39Speaker 1: But when Hriedmar saw the otter straightway, he called to him.
- 4:43Speaker 1: His sons foff near and ragging, and told them that
- 4:46Speaker 1: the otter their brother, was slain, and who had done
- 4:49Speaker 1: that deed. Now father and sons went up to the esir,
- 4:53Speaker 1: seized them, bound them, and told them about the otter
- 4:56Speaker 1: how he was Hriedmar's son. The aesir offered to ransom
- 5:00Speaker 1: for their lives as much wealth as Hriedmar himself desired
- 5:04Speaker 1: to appoint, and a covenant was made between them on
- 5:07Speaker 1: those terms and confirmed with oaths. Then the otter was
- 5:12Speaker 1: flayed and hriedmar taking the otter skin, bade them fill
- 5:16Speaker 1: the skin with red gold and also cover it altogether,
- 5:20Speaker 1: and that should be the condition of the covenant between them. Thereupon,
- 5:24Speaker 1: Odin sent Loki into the land of the black elves,
- 5:28Speaker 1: and he came to the dwarf who was called Anvari,
- 5:30Speaker 1: who was as a fish in the water. Loki caught
- 5:33Speaker 1: him in his hands and required of him, in ransom
- 5:36Speaker 1: of his life, all the gold that he had in
- 5:38Speaker 1: his rock. And when they came within the rock, the
- 5:42Speaker 1: dwarf brought forth all the gold he had, and it
- 5:45Speaker 1: was very much wealth. Then the dwarf quickly swept under
- 5:48Speaker 1: his hand one little gold ring, but Loki saw it
- 5:53Speaker 1: and commanded him to give over the ring. The dwarf
- 5:56Speaker 1: prayed him not to take the ring from him, saying
- 5:59Speaker 1: that from this ring he could multiply wealth for himself
- 6:02Speaker 1: if he might keep it. Loki answered that he should
- 6:06Speaker 1: not have one penny left, and took the ring from
- 6:09Speaker 1: him and went out. But the dwarf declared that that
- 6:12Speaker 1: ring should be the ruin of every one who should
- 6:15Speaker 1: come into possession of it. Loki replied that this seemed
- 6:18Speaker 1: well enough to him, and that this condition should hold good,
- 6:22Speaker 1: provided that he himself brought it to the ears of
- 6:25Speaker 1: them that should receive the ring and the curse. He
- 6:28Speaker 1: went his way and came to Hridmar's dwelling and showed
- 6:32Speaker 1: the gold to Odin. But when Odin saw the ring,
- 6:36Speaker 1: it seemed fair to him, and he took it away
- 6:38Speaker 1: from the treasure and paid the gold to Hridmar. Then
- 6:42Speaker 1: Hriidmar filled the otter skin as much as he could
- 6:45Speaker 1: and set it up when it was full. Next Odin
- 6:49Speaker 1: went up, having the skin to cover with gold, and
- 6:52Speaker 1: he bade Hriedmar look whether the skin were yet altogether hidden.
- 6:56Speaker 1: But Hriidmar looked at it searchingly and saw one of
- 6:59Speaker 1: the hairs of the snout, and commanded that this be covered,
- 7:03Speaker 1: else their covenant should be at an end. Then Odin
- 7:07Speaker 1: drew out the ring and covered the hair, saying that
- 7:10Speaker 1: they were now delivered from their debt for the slaying
- 7:13Speaker 1: of the Otter. But when Odin had taken his spear
- 7:16Speaker 1: and Loki his shoes, and they had no longer any
- 7:19Speaker 1: need to be afraid, then Loki declared that the curse
- 7:22Speaker 1: which Anvari had uttered should be fulfilled, that this ring
- 7:26Speaker 1: and this gold should be the destruction of him who
- 7:29Speaker 1: received it, and that was fulfilled afterward. Now it has
- 7:33Speaker 1: been told, wherefore gold is called Otter's where guild or
- 7:37Speaker 1: force payment of the eesir or metal of strife. Section forty.
- 7:44Speaker 1: What more is to be said of the gold? Pridemar
- 7:47Speaker 1: took the gold for his son's war gild, but Fafnir
- 7:50Speaker 1: and Regine claimed some part of their brother's blood money
- 7:54Speaker 1: for themselves. Pridemar would not grant them one penny of
- 7:57Speaker 1: the gold. This was the wicked purpose of those brethren.
- 8:01Speaker 1: They slew their father for the gold. Then Regin demanded
- 8:05Speaker 1: that Fafnir share the gold with him half for half.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Fafnir answered that there was little chance of his sharing
- 8:12Speaker 1: it with his brother, seeing that he had slain his
- 8:15Speaker 1: father for its sake, and he bade Regin go. Hence
- 8:19Speaker 1: Elsie should fare even as Hriedmar. Fafnir had taken the
- 8:23Speaker 1: helmet which Hriedmar had possessed, and set it upon his head.
- 8:28Speaker 1: This helmet was called the helm of terror, of which
- 8:31Speaker 1: all living creatures that see it are afraid, and the
- 8:35Speaker 1: sword called Hrati. Regin had that sword, which was named Raphael.
- 8:40Speaker 1: So he fled away, and Fafnir went up to Geneta
- 8:43Speaker 1: heath and made himself a lair, and turned himself into
- 8:47Speaker 1: a serpent, and laid him down upon the gold. Then
- 8:50Speaker 1: Ragin went to King hilprecher at Tioud, and there he
- 8:54Speaker 1: became his smith, and he took into his fostering Sigudur,
- 8:58Speaker 1: son of Sigmunder full Sungor son and of Hurdis, daughter
- 9:03Speaker 1: of Ailimi. Sigudur was most illustrious of all host kings
- 9:09Speaker 1: in race, in prowess and in mind. Ragin declared to
- 9:13Speaker 1: him where Fafnir lay on the gold, and incited him
- 9:16Speaker 1: to seek the gold. Then Regin fashioned the sword Grammer,
- 9:21Speaker 1: which was so sharp that Sigurdur, bringing it down into
- 9:25Speaker 1: running water, cut asunder a flock of wool, which drifted
- 9:29Speaker 1: down stream onto the sword's edge. Next, Sigurdur clove Ragin's
- 9:35Speaker 1: envil down to the stalk with a sword. After that
- 9:38Speaker 1: they went Sigurdur and Regin to Gneta heath, and there
- 9:42Speaker 1: Sigurdor dug a pit in Fafnir's way and laid himself
- 9:47Speaker 1: in ambush therein, And when Fafnir glided toward the water
- 9:51Speaker 1: and came above the pit, Sigurdurd straightway thrust his sword
- 9:55Speaker 1: through him, and that was his end. Then Raging came forward,
- 10:00Speaker 1: saying that Segurdur had slain his brother, and demanded, as
- 10:04Speaker 1: a condition of reconciliation, that he take Fafnir's heart and
- 10:08Speaker 1: roast it with fire. And Ragin laid him down and
- 10:11Speaker 1: drank the blood of Fafnir and settled himself to sleep.
- 10:16Speaker 1: But when Sigurdour was roasting the heart, and thought that
- 10:19Speaker 1: it must be quite roasted, he touched it with his
- 10:22Speaker 1: finger to see how hard it was, and then the
- 10:25Speaker 1: juice ran out from the heart on to his finger,
- 10:28Speaker 1: so that he was burned, and put his finger to
- 10:30Speaker 1: his mouth as soon as the heart's blood came upon
- 10:34Speaker 1: his tongue. Straightway. He knew the speech of birds, and
- 10:38Speaker 1: he understood what the nuthatches were saying, which were sitting
- 10:41Speaker 1: in the trees. Then one spake, there sits Sigurdour blood
- 10:46Speaker 1: besprinkled Fafnir's heart with flame. He roasteth wise seemed to
- 10:51Speaker 1: me the spoiler of rings. If the gleaming life fiber
- 10:55Speaker 1: he ate there lies, Raging sang another reed. He pawned
- 11:00Speaker 1: would betray the youth who trusteth in him. In his wrath,
- 11:04Speaker 1: he plots wrong accusation, the smith of Bale would avenge
- 11:09Speaker 1: his brother. Then Segurdu went over to Regging and slew him,
- 11:14Speaker 1: and thence to his horse, which was named Grannie, and
- 11:17Speaker 1: rode till he came to Fafnir's lair. He took up
- 11:20Speaker 1: the gold trusted up in his saddle bags, laid it
- 11:24Speaker 1: upon Grannie's back, mounted up himself, and then rode his ways.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Now the tale is told why gold is called lair
- 11:32Speaker 1: or abode of Fafnir or metal of Ginnita heath or
- 11:37Speaker 1: Grannie's burden. Section forty one. Then Sigurdur rode on till
- 11:44Speaker 1: he found a house on the mountain, wherein a woman
- 11:47Speaker 1: in helm and Bernie, lay sleeping. He drew his sword
- 11:51Speaker 1: and cut the Bernie from her. She awoke then and
- 11:55Speaker 1: gave her name as Hilder. She is called Brynhilder and
- 11:59Speaker 1: was the Valkir. Sigurdur rode away and came to the
- 12:03Speaker 1: king who was named Gyuki, whose wife was Grimhildur. Their
- 12:07Speaker 1: children were Gunnar, Hugni Gudrun. Gudni got Homer with Gyuki's
- 12:13Speaker 1: step son. Segurdur tarried there a long time, and then
- 12:18Speaker 1: he obtained the hand of Gudrun, daughter of Giuki, and Gunnar,
- 12:22Speaker 1: and Hugni swore oaths the blood brotherhood with Sigurdur. Thereafter,
- 12:27Speaker 1: Segurdur and the sons of Gyuki went unto Atli, Budli's son,
- 12:31Speaker 1: to sue for the hand of brin Hildur, his sister
- 12:34Speaker 1: in marriage to Gunnar. Bryn Hildur abode on Hinda fell,
- 12:39Speaker 1: and about her hull there was a flaring fire, and
- 12:42Speaker 1: she had made a solemn vow to take none but
- 12:45Speaker 1: that man who should dare to ride through the flaring fire.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Then Sigurdur and the sons of Gyuki, who were also
- 12:52Speaker 1: called Niflungs, rode up on to the mountain. And Gunnar
- 12:57Speaker 1: should have ridden through the flaring fire, but he had
- 13:00Speaker 1: the horse named Goti, and that horse dared not leap
- 13:03Speaker 1: into the fire. So they exchanged shapes Sigurdur and Gunnar,
- 13:07Speaker 1: and names likewise, for Grani would go under no man
- 13:11Speaker 1: but Sigurdur. Then Sigurdur leapt on too Grani and rode
- 13:16Speaker 1: through the flaring fire. That eve he was wedded with Brynhildur,
- 13:21Speaker 1: But when they came to bed, he drew the sword
- 13:23Speaker 1: Grommer from its sheath and laid it between them. In
- 13:27Speaker 1: the morning, when he arose and clothed himself, he gave
- 13:30Speaker 1: Brinhilder as Linenfee the same gold ring which Loki had
- 13:34Speaker 1: taken from Anvari, and took another ring from her hand
- 13:38Speaker 1: for remembrance. Then Sigurdur mounted his horse and rode to
- 13:42Speaker 1: his fellows, and he and Gunnar changed shapes again and
- 13:47Speaker 1: went home to Gyuki with bryn Hildur. Sigurdur and Gudrun
- 13:51Speaker 1: had two children, Sigmunder and swan Hildur. It befell. On
- 13:57Speaker 1: a time that Brynhildur and Gudrun went to the water
- 14:00Speaker 1: to wash their hair, and when they came to the river,
- 14:04Speaker 1: brin Hildr waded out from the bank well into the river,
- 14:08Speaker 1: saying that she would not touch to her head the
- 14:10Speaker 1: water which ran out of the hair of Gudrun, since
- 14:13Speaker 1: herself had the more valorous husband. Then Gudrun went into
- 14:18Speaker 1: the river after her and said that it was her
- 14:21Speaker 1: right to wash her hair higher up stream for the
- 14:24Speaker 1: reason that she had to husband such a man, as
- 14:26Speaker 1: neither Gunnar nor any other in the world matched in valor.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Seeing that he had slain Faffnier and Ragging, and succeeded
- 14:33Speaker 1: to the heritage of both. And Brynhilder made answer, it
- 14:38Speaker 1: was a matter of greater worth that Gunnar rode through
- 14:41Speaker 1: the flaring fire and Sigurdur durst not. Then Gudrun laughed
- 14:46Speaker 1: and said, dost thou think that Gunnar rode through the
- 14:49Speaker 1: flaring fire? Now? I think that he who went into
- 14:52Speaker 1: the bride bed with thee was the same that gave
- 14:55Speaker 1: me this gold ring. And the gold ring which thou
- 14:57Speaker 1: barest on thine hand and did received for Linenfee is
- 15:01Speaker 1: called Anvari's yield, And I believe that it was not
- 15:04Speaker 1: Gunnar who got that ring on ganita heath. Then Brynhildr
- 15:09Speaker 1: was silent and went home. After that, she egged on
- 15:13Speaker 1: Gunnar and Hugni to slay Sigurdur, But because they were
- 15:17Speaker 1: Sigurdur's sworn blood brothers, they stirred up goat Hormer, their brother,
- 15:21Speaker 1: to slay him. He thrust his sword through Segurdur as
- 15:25Speaker 1: he slept, but when Sigurdur felt the wound, he hurled
- 15:29Speaker 1: his sword Grommer after goat Hormor, so that it cut
- 15:33Speaker 1: them in asunder. At the middle there fell Sigurdur and Sigmunder,
- 15:37Speaker 1: his son of three winters, whom they slew. Then brin
- 15:41Speaker 1: Hildur stabbed herself with a sword, and she was burned
- 15:45Speaker 1: with Sigurdur. But Gunnar and Hugni took Fafnir's heritage and
- 15:50Speaker 1: Anvari's yield, and ruled the lands thereafter. King Atli, Budli's
- 15:56Speaker 1: son and brother of Brynhildur, then wedded Gudrun, whom Segurdur
- 16:01Speaker 1: had had to wife, and they had children. King Otli
- 16:05Speaker 1: invited to him Gunnar and Hugni, and they came at
- 16:08Speaker 1: his invitation. Yet before they departed from their land, they
- 16:13Speaker 1: hid the gold Foffner's heritage in the rhine, and that
- 16:17Speaker 1: gold has never since been found. Now King OTLEI had
- 16:21Speaker 1: a host in readiness and fought with Gunnar and Hugni,
- 16:25Speaker 1: and they were made captive. King Otli bade the heart
- 16:29Speaker 1: be cut out of Hugni alive, and that was his end.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Gunnar he caused to be cast into a den of serpents,
- 16:37Speaker 1: but a harp was brought secretly to Gunnar, and he
- 16:40Speaker 1: struck it with his toes, his hands being bound. He
- 16:43Speaker 1: played the harp, so that all the serpents fell asleep,
- 16:46Speaker 1: saving only one adder, which glided over to him and
- 16:50Speaker 1: gnawed into the cartilage of his breastbone, so far that
- 16:53Speaker 1: her head sank within the wound, and she cloved to
- 16:57Speaker 1: his liver till he died. Gunnar and Hugni were called
- 17:00Speaker 1: Niflungs and geu Kungs, for which reason gold is called
- 17:04Speaker 1: treasure or heritage of the Niflungs. A little while after,
- 17:10Speaker 1: Gudrun slew her two sons and caused flagons to be
- 17:14Speaker 1: made of their skulls, set with gold and silver. Then
- 17:17Speaker 1: the funeral feast was held for the Niflungs. And at
- 17:20Speaker 1: this feast Gudrun had mead poured into the flagons for
- 17:24Speaker 1: King Atli, and the mead was mixed with the blood
- 17:27Speaker 1: of the boys. Moreover, she caused their hearts to be
- 17:30Speaker 1: roasted and set before the king that he might eat
- 17:33Speaker 1: of them. And when he had eaten, then she herself
- 17:36Speaker 1: told him what she had done with many scathing words.
- 17:40Speaker 1: There was no lack of strong drink there so that
- 17:44Speaker 1: most of the company had fallen asleep where they sat.
- 17:47Speaker 1: That night. She went to the king while he slept
- 17:50Speaker 1: and Hugni's son with her, they smote the king, and
- 17:54Speaker 1: that was the death of him. Then they set fire
- 17:57Speaker 1: to the hall and burned the folk that were within.
- 18:01Speaker 1: After that, she went to the shore and leaped into
- 18:03Speaker 1: the sea, desiring to make an end of herself. But
- 18:07Speaker 1: she was tossed by the billows over the firth and
- 18:10Speaker 1: was born to King Yonakar's land. And when he saw her,
- 18:15Speaker 1: he took her to him and wedded her. And they
- 18:17Speaker 1: had three sons, called Surli, Hamdir, and Erper. They were
- 18:22Speaker 1: all raven black of hair, like Gunnar and Hugni and
- 18:25Speaker 1: the other niflungs. There swan Hilder, daughter of the youth Sigurdur,
- 18:30Speaker 1: was reared, and of all women, she was fairest. King
- 18:35Speaker 1: Yrmunrecer the Mighty learned of her beauty and sent his
- 18:38Speaker 1: son Ranver to woo her and bring her to be
- 18:41Speaker 1: his wife. When Ronver had come to the court of Yonaker,
- 18:46Speaker 1: swan Hildr was given into his hands, and he should
- 18:49Speaker 1: have brought her to King yr Munrecer, But Earl Biki
- 18:53Speaker 1: said that it was a better thing for Ranver to
- 18:55Speaker 1: wed swan Hilder, since he and she were both young.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Whereas your Munrekor was old. This council pleased the young
- 19:02Speaker 1: folk well. Thereupon Biki reported the matter to the king straightway.
- 19:08Speaker 1: King jormun Recer commanded that his son be seized and
- 19:11Speaker 1: led to the gallows. Then Ronvert took his hawk and
- 19:14Speaker 1: plucked off its feathers, and bade that it be sent
- 19:17Speaker 1: so to his father, after which he was hanged. But
- 19:22Speaker 1: when King yoormun Reker saw the hawk, suddenly it came
- 19:25Speaker 1: home to him that even as the hawk was featherless
- 19:28Speaker 1: and powerless to fly, so was his kingdom shorn of
- 19:32Speaker 1: its might, since he was old and childless. Then King
- 19:36Speaker 1: yurmun Recer, riding out of the wood where he had
- 19:39Speaker 1: been hunting, beheld swan Hilder as she sat washing her hair.
- 19:43Speaker 1: They rode upon her and trod her to death under
- 19:46Speaker 1: their horses feet. But when Gudrun learned of this, she
- 19:51Speaker 1: urged on her sons to take vengeance for swan Hilder.
- 19:55Speaker 1: When they were preparing for their journey, she gave them
- 19:57Speaker 1: burneys and helmets so strong that iron could not bite
- 20:01Speaker 1: into them. She laid these instructions upon them that when
- 20:05Speaker 1: they were come to King Yurmann Recker. They should go
- 20:08Speaker 1: up to him by night as he slept sorely, and
- 20:11Speaker 1: Humdir should hew off his hands and feet, and Eerper
- 20:15Speaker 1: his head. But when they were on their way, they
- 20:18Speaker 1: asked Ereper what help they might expect from him if
- 20:21Speaker 1: they met King yurmann Recker. He answered that he would
- 20:25Speaker 1: render them such aid as the hand affords the foot.
- 20:29Speaker 1: They said that that help which the foot received from
- 20:31Speaker 1: the hand was altogether nothing. There was so wroth with
- 20:35Speaker 1: their mother that she had sent them away with angry words,
- 20:39Speaker 1: and they desired so eagerly to do what would seem
- 20:42Speaker 1: worse to her, that they slew Eerper, because she loved
- 20:45Speaker 1: him most of all. A little later, while Surli was walking,
