- 1:39Speaker 3: Tuesday edition of the show a bit of a snowy
- 1:41Speaker 3: Tuesday morning. Take it easy if you are traveling, although
- 1:44Speaker 3: it seems like I haven't had a lot of reports
- 1:47Speaker 3: of traffic issues here now in southern West Virginia it
- 1:49Speaker 3: seems to be a different story. But around the Charleston
- 1:52Speaker 3: area roads seem to be wet as as as I'm
- 1:55Speaker 3: saying this right now, and they tell us that by
- 1:59Speaker 3: midday afternoon we're going to get that warm wedge in
- 2:02Speaker 3: here and it's going to probably turn to more rain
- 2:06Speaker 3: than anything else, so that could do it for us. However,
- 2:08Speaker 3: things can change. Meteorologist Brian Hughes from Stormtracker thirteen. He's
- 2:12Speaker 3: becoming a regular on the show the last couple of months.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Brian Hughes is going to join us to talk about
- 2:16Speaker 3: it a little bit later on. Also, Judge Mary Claire
- 2:19Speaker 3: Akers will be stopping by. She is gearing up for
- 2:21Speaker 3: the annual King of Hearts event this Friday, where she
- 2:24Speaker 3: plans on marrying up a whole lot of people at
- 2:27Speaker 3: the courthouse. They do this every year. Talking to her
- 2:29Speaker 3: about that. Plus, former legislator and now media mogul HD
- 2:33Speaker 3: Media is Doug Scaff will be stopping by. I want
- 2:35Speaker 3: to talk to Doug about several things related to media,
- 2:38Speaker 3: but also a preview of the legislative session that is
- 2:41Speaker 3: about to take place, and yes to the texture that
- 2:44Speaker 3: ask about it. I will ask him about the changes
- 2:47Speaker 3: in the comics in the Gazette and the puzzles. You
- 2:50Speaker 3: can do whatever you want to, but you go messing
- 2:53Speaker 3: with people's comics and puzzles and they get a little
- 2:55Speaker 3: bit bothered about it. So yes, Skaff, just know if
- 2:58Speaker 3: you're driving in right now. I am going to ask
- 3:00Speaker 3: you about that as well in your calls and text
- 3:03Speaker 3: are welcome to Bigley Pickleig Wiggily hotline three zero four

- 3:07Speaker 6: Tony B.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Taylor Text three zero four nine three five five zero
- 3:10Speaker 3: zero eight, want to welcome to the show now Senator
- 3:13Speaker 3: Ann Sharnock, who's been appointed by Governor Morrisseyat to field
- 3:16Speaker 3: a vacancy in the seventeenth district. Did I get the
- 3:18Speaker 3: number right there, Senator, yes, she did. Now are you
- 3:21Speaker 3: officially Senator? Now have you been sworn in yet?
- 3:23Speaker 7: I was sworn in Thursday. I am official.
- 3:25Speaker 3: You have been sworn at and so they were ready,
- 3:28Speaker 3: well that's coming, that's coming. So yeah, you were appointed
- 3:32Speaker 3: to that to that seat to fill the vacancy. That
- 3:35Speaker 3: was the seat that was of the vacancy that was
- 3:37Speaker 3: created by Senator Eric Nelson right, who was named Secretary
- 3:41Speaker 3: of Revenue. A lot of folks in the area know
- 3:44Speaker 3: who you are here in the Kanaal Valley, but for
- 3:46Speaker 3: those who don't know, give us the bio on An Sharnock.
- 3:49Speaker 7: I'm a lifelong resident of Kanall County. I'm graduate of
- 3:53Speaker 7: George Washington, have two degrees from WVU, practice law in
- 3:58Speaker 7: this town for over four years, served as the Charleston
- 4:03Speaker 7: Munimal judge for a little bit over twelve years, and
- 4:06Speaker 7: now I'm in the state Senate.
- 4:09Speaker 3: So explain that district to us. District seventeen. I always
- 4:12Speaker 3: like to have people explain the district. What areas do
- 4:14Speaker 3: you actually cover?
- 4:16Speaker 7: District seventeen is wholly within Kannaal Campy.
- 4:19Speaker 3: It's the one that's holy because the other one is
- 4:21Speaker 3: all over the place.
- 4:22Speaker 7: Hey, and then part of Kanall County is also in
- 4:24Speaker 7: District seven.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:26Speaker 7: Yeah, So District seventeen, if you start at the Kanal
- 4:29Speaker 7: River and go south, it's all of Charleston proper. You
- 4:33Speaker 7: go to the east and go up to about Marmette.
- 4:35Speaker 7: You go to the west and you head down through
- 4:37Speaker 7: parts of South Charleston and Saint Albans. If you cross
- 4:41Speaker 7: the river, start up at Montgomery, come down the river
- 4:45Speaker 7: to Greenbrier Street, head out Greenbriar Street and go to
- 4:48Speaker 7: Pinch and Elkview and Clendennon and head to the west
- 4:51Speaker 7: for just a little bit assistant though.
- 4:53Speaker 3: One of the things that I like to bring up
- 4:55Speaker 3: when I talk to people that represent areas like this
- 4:57Speaker 3: here in Kanaha County is it is a very diverse area.
- 5:01Speaker 3: And what I mean is is and listeners hear me
- 5:03Speaker 3: say this every day about certain areas. The wants, needs, concerns,
- 5:08Speaker 3: issues with one area of Kanawk County maybe totally different
- 5:11Speaker 3: than the other areas you serve.
- 5:13Speaker 7: And this is one of the few districts in West
- 5:16Speaker 7: Virginia that has such a dichotomy between the urban areas
- 5:20Speaker 7: of Charleston and the more rural areas once she gets
- 5:24Speaker 7: outside of Charleston. So it's a mix. I mean, there
- 5:27Speaker 7: are a lot of needs and they're different based based
- 5:30Speaker 7: on the geography.
- 5:31Speaker 3: How do you plan on attacking that.
- 5:35Speaker 7: The best way that I can, But you have to
- 5:37Speaker 7: listen to people. You have to understand what their needs
- 5:40Speaker 7: are and what their wants are. And I've got big
- 5:43Speaker 7: ears I can do that.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Talking to Anne Sharnock again, who is the new State
- 5:46Speaker 3: Center out of District seventeen the Dave Island Show in
- 5:49Speaker 3: five eighty Live is brought to you in part but
- 5:50Speaker 3: mix realtoro group looking to buy or sell. Meek says,
- 5:53Speaker 3: you covered from residential to commercial. Trust Rich, the realtor,
- 5:56Speaker 3: one of the area's premier real estate teams to guide
- 5:58Speaker 3: you every step of the way. Mix Realty Group where
- 5:59Speaker 3: you're dreams find their home. Called them today three zero
- 6:02Speaker 3: four nine three two seventy four eighty eight or email
- 6:05Speaker 3: our client that's cliented with a k at Meeksrealtygroup dot com.
- 6:09Speaker 3: You talked about you served as as municipal judge for
- 6:11Speaker 3: a while and you've been around politics, you know, for
- 6:14Speaker 3: some time. What have you learned in your past experiences
- 6:17Speaker 3: that you think will make you a good fit to
- 6:19Speaker 3: be a state senator?
- 6:21Speaker 7: Well? As a judge, you have to listen, and I
- 6:25Speaker 7: think I listened pretty well, and I certainly welcome people
- 6:29Speaker 7: talking to me and getting in touch with me so
- 6:31Speaker 7: that I can listen to what they want and what
- 6:33Speaker 7: they need, and what they're complaining about or what they're
- 6:36Speaker 7: happy about. If somebody would like to call me and
- 6:38Speaker 7: tell me that things are going well, I would love
- 6:40Speaker 7: to hear that. So I think that's an important and
- 6:43Speaker 7: it's just open mind, sound judgment. Those are things you
- 6:48Speaker 7: have to do as a judge, and I think that
- 6:50Speaker 7: fits very well with.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Being a Just like a lot of times, what I
- 6:54Speaker 3: found in dealing with the folks around the legislature over
- 6:56Speaker 3: the years, is that there are various walks of life,
- 7:00Speaker 3: just like with everybody else, makes up who you are
- 7:03Speaker 3: and things that they've learned, even sometimes when it's not
- 7:05Speaker 3: in a court room or it's not around you know,
- 7:07Speaker 3: you mentioned as an attorney and later a judge, It
- 7:11Speaker 3: makes up who you are.
- 7:12Speaker 7: Well, certainly your experiences have met My experiences through the
- 7:18Speaker 7: years have made me who I am today. I am
- 7:20Speaker 7: not the same girl I was twenty thirty, forty years ago.
- 7:25Speaker 7: But you add those together and that's who you are.
- 7:28Speaker 3: What as we look ahead to the session, and of
- 7:32Speaker 3: course the Governor Morrissey will give his State of the
- 7:34Speaker 3: State tomorrow night, you folks will gavel in tomorrow and
- 7:38Speaker 3: then everybody will kind of you know, listen to what
- 7:40Speaker 3: the governor says and you really get to work. I
- 7:41Speaker 3: guess on Thursday, what do you see heading into the
- 7:45Speaker 3: session as the some of the biggest needs for your
- 7:48Speaker 3: area and what are you looking forward to him? What
- 7:50Speaker 3: do you want to see happen?
- 7:53Speaker 7: Well, I think the most important thing is listening to
- 7:56Speaker 7: the Governor's address tomorrow night. We have spent the last
- 8:00Speaker 7: two weeks with this discussion about does the state have
- 8:03Speaker 7: enough money. Is there a four hundred million dollar hole
- 8:06Speaker 7: or is there not? Depends on who you talk to.
- 8:09Speaker 7: I'm interested. That's the first thing that interests me in
- 8:12Speaker 7: his address tomorrow, and then is where are we financially?
- 8:17Speaker 7: And then second what's his agenda? What does he want
- 8:19Speaker 7: to see done? What is he proposing? And I think
- 8:23Speaker 7: that we will you know once I once I you know,
- 8:26Speaker 7: once we hear that, we'll have a better idea of
- 8:29Speaker 7: where this session's gonna go.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean that's what you have to do is
- 8:33Speaker 3: every year you kind of got to wait to see
- 8:34Speaker 3: what the governor's especially when you have a new governor.
- 8:37Speaker 3: And I think one thing that we have taken away
- 8:39Speaker 3: so far from the first couple of weeks of the
- 8:41Speaker 3: Morrisy administration is and it's not better or worse, it's
- 8:45Speaker 3: just different. It's he's going to be a even though
- 8:47Speaker 3: they're the same party, he's going to be a lot
- 8:48Speaker 3: different type of governor. I think than what what now
- 8:51Speaker 3: Senator Senator Jim Justice was.
- 8:54Speaker 7: And I agree with you it is it's going to
- 8:56Speaker 7: be a sea change.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely. I want to get give you the opportunity
- 9:01Speaker 3: to thank anyone that you would like to thank you know, family, friends, whomever.
- 9:08Speaker 3: I'll just give the last thirty or forty seconds to you.
- 9:11Speaker 7: Go ahead, Well, thank you very much. Of course, I'm
- 9:13Speaker 7: eternally grateful to Governor Morrissey for appointing me to this position,
- 9:19Speaker 7: and I so appreciate that and I'm so looking forward
- 9:22Speaker 7: to it. And of course, you know, I have family
- 9:24Speaker 7: here in town. I've got a great set of siblings
- 9:28Speaker 7: and siblings in law and nephews, and they're all big supporters,
- 9:32Speaker 7: or at least I will say.
- 9:33Speaker 3: That until you get in there and do something they
- 9:35Speaker 3: don't like.
- 9:37Speaker 7: So I'll hear about that.
- 9:38Speaker 5: Oh, sure you will.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Yeah, your friends and family are always really good at that.
- 9:41Speaker 7: But I just appreciate the trust the Governor's given me,
- 9:44Speaker 7: and I hope I earn it with the people of
- 9:46Speaker 7: the seventeen.
- 9:47Speaker 3: All right, Well, I appreciate you being here and you
- 9:50Speaker 3: being one of the locals here, you know, just as
- 9:52Speaker 3: a Senator Nelson was, he was a regular on the show.
- 9:55Speaker 3: I expected we'll have you on maybe a couple times
- 9:57Speaker 3: during the session, either from the capital or from here.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Have you got settled into the office.
- 10:01Speaker 7: Yet, I've found my office.
- 10:03Speaker 3: You vend your office that's step one and I.
- 10:05Speaker 7: Think that's very important. And yes, I'm getting there. I'm
- 10:10Speaker 7: getting there.
- 10:10Speaker 3: You'll be fine.
- 10:11Speaker 5: I think you'll be fine.

- 10:25Speaker 3: It's just I was in a hurry. I apologize for that.
- 10:26Speaker 3: I know you're a senator. I appreciate you being here.

- 13:41Speaker 3: Unsure what the South Hills has in common with Montgomery
- 13:45Speaker 3: as an example. That's that's kind of what I said,

- 13:54Speaker 3: as a diverse area, people kind of scratch your hand, go,
- 13:56Speaker 3: what the heck are you talking about? But there, you know,
- 13:58Speaker 3: there's a lot of differences, you know, between the urban

- 14:46Speaker 3: stuff in your resume, man, a lot of stuff.
- 14:48Speaker 5: Yeah, I've been I've been around the block a few times.
- 14:50Speaker 5: It's out there on the capitol for.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Sure, and probably at least so the last couple of years,
- 14:54Speaker 3: best known as being the most famous snake bite victim
- 14:57Speaker 3: in West Virginia history.
- 14:58Speaker 5: There was two hundred and seven bytes record in West Virginia,

- 15:17Speaker 3: you probably get tired of talking about this.
- 15:19Speaker 5: That's the cold weather. It's I have constant throbbing in
- 15:22Speaker 5: my heel. I've got two dead nerves that are permanently
- 15:24Speaker 5: damaged for forever. I've got three that are might come

- 15:40Speaker 5: It didn't the snakes didn't hit my son. I just
- 15:43Speaker 5: I don't wish it on anybody. It's one of the
- 15:44Speaker 5: most painful things that anybody could go through. And I
- 15:47Speaker 5: just hopefully educated a few people and brought awareness. A
- 15:49Speaker 5: lot of these real estate agents and people who put
- 15:51Speaker 5: signs out there said, hey, you brought you shed some
- 15:53Speaker 5: light on what I do out there in the weeds.
- 15:55Speaker 5: For sure, just be careful.
- 15:56Speaker 3: A lot of people, I think, with your story and
- 15:59Speaker 3: you and I talked about it all on the show
- 16:00Speaker 3: and off the show, I think a lot of people thought, Okay, well,
- 16:03Speaker 3: you get met by a snake, you either die or
- 16:05Speaker 3: you recover. But there's a lot in the recovery. I mean,
- 16:08Speaker 3: I had no idea that it was this long night,
- 16:11Speaker 3: long term event.
- 16:12Speaker 5: I'll have pain forever. I never go. I can't run,
- 16:14Speaker 5: I can't jump. Well I never did it that well anyways,
- 16:15Speaker 5: but I can't. I can't run, but I do go
- 16:17Speaker 5: to the gym and try to, you know, try to
- 16:19Speaker 5: work out a little bit, but I just can't put
- 16:21Speaker 5: a lot of weight to pressure on it.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Well, I'm glad you're here, but I'm here. I'm glad
- 16:25Speaker 3: you're here.
- 16:26Speaker 5: Here, I get to live to see another session that's
- 16:28Speaker 5: not on the outside this time and kind of watch
- 16:30Speaker 5: all the festivities. So I'm excited for that. And still
- 16:32Speaker 5: running the papers, and we got a lot going on.
- 16:34Speaker 5: We keep adding to our portfolio there and HD Media,
- 16:36Speaker 5: so it's been great.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Let's start off. I do want to get to the session.
- 16:39Speaker 3: Let's start off by talking about HD Media. So what
- 16:43Speaker 3: exactly is your title?
- 16:44Speaker 5: Again for people that don't I am president, the big
- 16:46Speaker 5: president of all of HD Media. It's a conglomerate of
- 16:49Speaker 5: thirteen papers in an outside West Virginia. We're in Virginia
- 16:52Speaker 5: now and we're over in Ohio. We also print a
- 16:55Speaker 5: total of thirty two papers from all around the region.
- 16:58Speaker 5: We have the largest printing press in a three D radios.
- 17:00Speaker 3: And you still and you're still printing them too.
- 17:02Speaker 5: We're printing them right here in good old Charleston, West Virginia.
- 17:04Speaker 5: We people come in just to see our press. We
- 17:06Speaker 5: had a bunch of students in from WVU last week.
- 17:08Speaker 5: They just wanted to see the presses. They were so
- 17:09Speaker 5: fascinated because it's a two story press. It goes it's
- 17:12Speaker 5: a whole city block almost of a building. And the
- 17:14Speaker 5: third of it is the printing presses.
- 17:16Speaker 3: And the history of the of the paper.
- 17:19Speaker 5: In the history of the paper, I mean, people love news.
- 17:22Speaker 5: It's just the way they consume it is changing.
- 17:24Speaker 6: You know.
- 17:24Speaker 5: There's people who are always going to want a physical paper.
- 17:26Speaker 5: And there's a lot of papers, you know, especially done there.
- 17:29Speaker 5: It is right here, you got there in your hand.
- 17:30Speaker 5: It's the touch and the feel and the smell of
- 17:32Speaker 5: the paper. They ain't on your hand. But just seeing
- 17:34Speaker 5: the kids and the families from the especially some of
- 17:37Speaker 5: the royal communities, they love seeing that once a week paper.
- 17:39Speaker 5: We have a lot of weeklies that just come out
- 17:40Speaker 5: once a week and it's mailed to you. And just
- 17:42Speaker 5: the way people consume it digitally. Like you all here,
- 17:44Speaker 5: you got to continue to change. You got to offer video,
- 17:46Speaker 5: you got to offer podcasts. You gotta change with the times.
- 17:49Speaker 3: H It's yeah, it's constantly changing. That's the name.
- 17:52Speaker 5: You know.
- 17:53Speaker 3: We went through the name change a couple of years
- 17:54Speaker 3: ago from West Virginia Radio Corporation, because radio is just
- 17:57Speaker 3: one of the things we do. Now it's WVRC media.
- 18:00Speaker 3: We're on video, we're on you know, digital and websites
- 18:03Speaker 3: and you guys, I mean me.
- 18:05Speaker 2: You know.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Here's the thing people say all the time that that
- 18:07Speaker 3: and I hate this term legacy media. They're always crapping
- 18:10Speaker 3: all over Legacy media is not No, it's not at all,
- 18:14Speaker 3: and we have the numbers to back that up. People
- 18:16Speaker 3: are just consuming it in different ways. As you said, done,
- 18:20Speaker 3: It's it's all about the personalities. It's like you, I
- 18:22Speaker 3: get to see your studio here under construction. You know
- 18:24Speaker 3: it's good or bad. You're gonna be on video now,
- 18:25Speaker 3: so I get to look at you all the time.
- 18:27Speaker 3: But No, the thing, the way that people consume it
- 18:29Speaker 3: is changing, and we must change. If we want to
- 18:31Speaker 3: deliver news and entertain and inform people, you have to
- 18:34Speaker 3: do it in whichever way the people want to consume it.
- 18:36Speaker 3: All right, you know what I'm going to ask next.
- 18:37Speaker 5: I know it's coming, don't hit me with it. What's
- 18:39Speaker 5: the biggest complain of it?
- 18:40Speaker 3: The biggest complain of the week is is that at
- 18:43Speaker 3: some point, what last week or whatever, there was a
- 18:46Speaker 3: change in the comics and and the puzzle page. And
- 18:50Speaker 3: I'm going to give you a chance. And you know,
- 18:52Speaker 3: it's kind of funny because I have, you know, have
- 18:54Speaker 3: all the various mayors on, you know, from all the community,
- 18:56Speaker 3: from Ayor Goodwin and James and Mullins and all the
- 18:59Speaker 3: Mayrithon area, and they say the one number one thing
- 19:01Speaker 3: that they get complaints or concerns about are fireworks and
- 19:04Speaker 3: Christmas parades. They it's not potholes, not crime, and that's
- 19:08Speaker 3: the number one complaint about. But there are constantly changes
- 19:12Speaker 3: that have to happen in this company and your company
- 19:14Speaker 3: as well. But some changes were made Doug to the
- 19:17Speaker 3: puzzles and the comics in the in the hard cop
- 19:20Speaker 3: I guess on the online version two of the of
- 19:22Speaker 3: the paper.
- 19:23Speaker 5: I mean, it's like making sausage. There's so much stuff
- 19:25Speaker 5: that goes into in news paper. I'm telling you, you just
- 19:27Speaker 5: don't know. Defendant, go ahead and the com there's no defense.
- 19:30Speaker 5: My mom is is the biggest creek. I cannot believe
- 19:33Speaker 5: you missed with dagwood and peanuts and you took some
- 19:37Speaker 5: of my favorite car. Here's the deal. To make a
- 19:39Speaker 5: comic space, it doesn't just appear magically and sent to us.
- 19:43Speaker 5: Five or six different outlets send us different comed shrips.
- 19:46Speaker 5: You have to pay individually almost for each comic strip.
- 19:48Speaker 5: And we build it every night. We build a page
- 19:51Speaker 5: and we try to find, you know, the best and
- 19:53Speaker 5: what people want in the most popular and yes, one
- 19:55Speaker 5: of the biggest complaints and phone calls and anything, if
- 19:58Speaker 5: you mess with the crossword puzzles or the comics, you're
- 20:02Speaker 5: gonna hear about it. So that is one big things.
- 20:04Speaker 5: So a lot of things. You think, oh, they just
- 20:05Speaker 5: buy the newspaper to read the articles and stories. So
- 20:07Speaker 5: many people buy it for those crossword puzzles every day
- 20:10Speaker 5: to read the comics. And yes, so it was it
- 20:13Speaker 5: was a combination of a lot of things. But you
- 20:15Speaker 5: have to buy the different comics just from different entities.
- 20:17Speaker 5: And so we were trying to consolidate mainstream and organize,
- 20:21Speaker 5: you know, our efforts to buy just from one or
- 20:24Speaker 5: two outlets instead of five or six outlets, and some
- 20:26Speaker 5: of those did not provide some of the popular things.
- 20:29Speaker 5: So we're gonna I'm not gonna say they're coming back,
- 20:31Speaker 5: but we're gonna we're gonna evaluate it. We're gonna see
- 20:33Speaker 5: and we're gonna work together to see you know what.
- 20:35Speaker 5: We same thing the stock page, the business page. We
- 20:37Speaker 5: get that from the AP wire. They just told me
- 20:39Speaker 5: yesterday they're changing the way that that's gonna look, you know,
- 20:41Speaker 5: So the way that you see your stocks on the
- 20:43Speaker 5: business page, the graphs, that's gonna change. They're gonna send
- 20:46Speaker 5: it to us individually. We're gonna have to come, you know,
- 20:48Speaker 5: put it together of stocks of local interest is what
- 20:51Speaker 5: we do, Build it and put it out there.
- 20:53Speaker 3: All right, talking to a Doug scaff of HD Media,
- 20:55Speaker 3: but a vallance showing five of eighty live is brought
- 20:57Speaker 3: to you part by Bridge Valley offering custom tailored trainings
- 20:59Speaker 3: to supply of skilled graduates and apprenticeships for your company.
- 21:02Speaker 3: Visit Bridge Valley dot edu. All right, let's focus on
- 21:05Speaker 3: the legislature. Now, you something that you know just a
- 21:08Speaker 3: little bit about. What do you make of the changes
- 21:11Speaker 3: in the Senate? You know, I mean Randy Randy Smith
- 21:13Speaker 3: is going to be the new Senate President. There's several
- 21:16Speaker 3: other changes. What do you think about?
- 21:18Speaker 5: It's exciting how you get to that change? How do
- 21:20Speaker 5: you get to the Senate President, and there's all this
- 21:22Speaker 5: jockeying and maneuvering and putting your team together, and it
- 21:24Speaker 5: is like a little great school election. You know, you're
- 21:26Speaker 5: you're sitting there and you're you're who's the right person
- 21:29Speaker 5: for the job. And I heard him speak a little
- 21:31Speaker 5: just a while ago at the issues and eggs and
- 21:32Speaker 5: he goes he is the face of the Senate Caucus,
- 21:34Speaker 5: but he surrounds himself with a lot of wonderful and
- 21:36Speaker 5: great minded people that can make it happen. So he
- 21:40Speaker 5: is an average day West Virginian. You know, I've served
- 21:43Speaker 5: with Randy. He's a great person. He's down the earth.
- 21:45Speaker 5: He gets it, you know, and he cares about one thing,
- 21:47Speaker 5: and that's providing good quality of life and jobs for
- 21:50Speaker 5: the future and next generations of West Virginians, for the kids.
- 21:52Speaker 5: He probably said that three or four times today. I
- 21:54Speaker 5: think he has eleven or twelve grandkids. He has multiple
- 21:56Speaker 5: kids himself. I mean, he he gets it and he
- 21:58Speaker 5: just wants to do good for the pull West Virginia.
- 22:00Speaker 5: And he's got ten, no, I think ten or eleven
- 22:04Speaker 5: new senators. So that's a lot, you know, you think
- 22:06Speaker 5: about it, that's you know, a good handle in the
- 22:09Speaker 5: House of Delegate. You have one hundred members and you
- 22:11Speaker 5: have a twenty percent of them, you know, change over
- 22:13Speaker 5: every year, twenty to twenty five percent. So this session,
- 22:16Speaker 5: everyone's full of optimism and excitement and they're eager to
- 22:19Speaker 5: get started. And they ran on these platforms and I'm
- 22:21Speaker 5: gonna go down to Charleston and I'm gonna do this,
- 22:23Speaker 5: this and this, and then boom reality things.
- 22:25Speaker 3: Two weeks later, they're jaded.
- 22:28Speaker 5: Then you got the governor pushes his agenda down and
- 22:30Speaker 5: then you know, it's it's it's it's such a conservative
- 22:33Speaker 5: makeup of both bodies right now, and I think most
- 22:35Speaker 5: of the items will be aligned on, but you still
- 22:37Speaker 5: have differences within side the party. You know, you'll have sure,
- 22:41Speaker 5: you'll have different views. You know, you'll have your your
- 22:43Speaker 5: center right views or have your far right views, and
- 22:46Speaker 5: so then you'll start seeing some infighting amongst the people.
- 22:48Speaker 5: And the first couple of weeks everyone's together, they're all
- 22:51Speaker 5: rowing in that same boat. And then they get in
- 22:52Speaker 5: those committee meetings and then then the fun begins. And
- 22:55Speaker 5: I think the biggest difference this year is the budget.
- 22:58Speaker 5: You know, this this four hundred million dollar thing, animal
- 23:02Speaker 5: beast deficit that the governor is saying is out there,
- 23:05Speaker 5: but depending on who you talk to, I'm not sure
- 23:07Speaker 5: it's quite all out there. Speaker of the House and
- 23:10Speaker 5: it's Senate President. They meet regularly with the governor, and
- 23:14Speaker 5: I know for a fact they even talked about it
- 23:15Speaker 5: this morning. They don't believe that it's that big of
- 23:17Speaker 5: a four hundred million dollar deficit that the governor's tout,
- 23:20Speaker 5: So we just have to wait and see where he's
- 23:21Speaker 5: getting those numbers. I worked on Finance Committee for numerous years.
- 23:25Speaker 5: We put together a budget. Senate puts together a budget.
- 23:27Speaker 5: They come together with the governor's budget as kind of
- 23:30Speaker 5: the framework, and then you see where the differences are. Okay,
- 23:34Speaker 5: they feel pretty confident in the House that there's not
- 23:36Speaker 5: that big a hole that he's talking about. But hey,
- 23:38Speaker 5: let's go back in time for a minute. You know,
- 23:40Speaker 5: go back to the Earl Ray Tomlin Day's ear Ray
- 23:42Speaker 5: Tomlin days. You go back to even the Mansion days.
- 23:45Speaker 5: Jim and Justice especially, All governors come in on the
- 23:47Speaker 5: first day and they want to say, Hey, this guy
- 23:49Speaker 5: is falling. I'm going to be the hero. I'm gonna
- 23:52Speaker 5: be the one that sets us back on the course.
- 23:53Speaker 5: You remember that, you know we're gonna have.
- 23:55Speaker 3: That's not a Republican or.
- 23:57Speaker 5: That's just the governors want to come in and they
- 23:59Speaker 5: want to save the day. And you know, I think
- 24:01Speaker 5: that's what Morsey. Hey, listen, I want to put the
- 24:02Speaker 5: snake the flag in the ground. I want to put
- 24:04Speaker 5: the stake in the ground and say, listen, there is
- 24:07Speaker 5: hey common sense says, yes, you can't cut all these
- 24:10Speaker 5: taxes like we've done the last few years, which is
- 24:12Speaker 5: good for the people, but without having a new revenue
- 24:15Speaker 5: stream coming in to fill those holes. So at some
- 24:17Speaker 5: point it might catch up to us. That is correct.
- 24:21Speaker 5: I agree with the governor on that. So you have
- 24:23Speaker 5: to have revenue streams to come in to fill the
- 24:25Speaker 5: holes for the tax cuts that we've made in the past.
- 24:28Speaker 3: So Senator, I'm sorry. Governor Morrissey came in. Uh from
- 24:33Speaker 3: day one, as I said, guns a blazing, you know,
- 24:35Speaker 3: much like Trump, you know, and UH and in Washington said,
- 24:39Speaker 3: you know, from I'm gonna I'm doing this, and I've
- 24:41Speaker 3: got executive orders and I've I've got this and what's
- 24:44Speaker 3: your what's your overall feel about? Uh about the Morrissey administration.
- 24:47Speaker 5: Well, you know, I think, hey, Morrisey's hands on. I
- 24:50Speaker 5: mean that one hundred percent. I mean, he's there. He
- 24:52Speaker 5: wants to be in everything. He he calls me regularly
- 24:54Speaker 5: and asks how how this playing the media, or how's
- 24:56Speaker 5: this going to play in the media. Ask for my opinion,
- 24:58Speaker 5: I ask you here there. Whether it you know it
- 24:59Speaker 5: takes it or not, that's on him. But he does
- 25:00Speaker 5: he does care. I mean he is all in.
- 25:03Speaker 10: Uh.
- 25:03Speaker 5: He he wants to be involved in everything. So you
- 25:05Speaker 5: can't say that he's not going to be present, because
- 25:07Speaker 5: it's going to be night and day. He's going to
- 25:09Speaker 5: be around. He's going to see him around the Capitol.
- 25:10Speaker 3: And he's moved into the governor's mansion.
- 25:12Speaker 5: He's actually lived in the mansion. He's going to be everywhere.
- 25:14Speaker 5: That guy tears up the road. I gotta give him that.
- 25:16Speaker 5: He wears he wears tennis shoes for a reason, you know,
- 25:18Speaker 5: because he's always on his feet and he's everywhere. That's
- 25:21Speaker 5: a hands on type of governor. And either you love
- 25:23Speaker 5: that or you don't. And how he here's here's what
- 25:26Speaker 5: I'm anxious to see how he gels from with a
- 25:29Speaker 5: new with the legislature, that's not used to having a
- 25:32Speaker 5: hands on governor for the past seven or eight years,
- 25:35Speaker 5: so it's gonna be a little different. He's gonna be
- 25:37Speaker 5: I think he's gonna be around. I think he's going
- 25:38Speaker 5: to see him pop in the committee meetings. I think
- 25:39Speaker 5: you're going to see him come in and address the
- 25:41Speaker 5: legislators on a more regular basis and come into their caucuses.
- 25:44Speaker 5: I think you're going to see that from him. It's
- 25:46Speaker 5: just the type of person he is.
- 25:48Speaker 3: And again, as I was talking to Senator Sharnock earlier,
- 25:51Speaker 3: you know, you don't know exactly what's going to happen
- 25:53Speaker 3: until he gives that speech tomorrow night. What are you
- 25:55Speaker 3: looking forward to in that speech? I know you talked
- 25:57Speaker 3: about the budget, but if you had a whiteboard, Doug,
- 26:00Speaker 3: and you went in and you said, all right, all right,
- 26:02Speaker 3: scaff I want you to make a list two three
- 26:05Speaker 3: for the big things. Obviously, we got to address the
- 26:08Speaker 3: budget situation because there's saving to be a very big discrepancy.
- 26:11Speaker 3: I had Larry Pack on the show yesterday and I
- 26:13Speaker 3: heard him over your event Friday with the Press Association,
- 26:17Speaker 3: who said, you know, the difference between the budget is
- 26:20Speaker 3: whether I do it or my wife does the household budget.
- 26:22Speaker 3: You know, it's good that you use that a couple
- 26:24Speaker 3: of times. Interesting analogy, but that's one of them. But
- 26:27Speaker 3: there's also some and that's serious. But there was also childcare,
- 26:32Speaker 3: you know, foster care issues, things of that nature.
- 26:35Speaker 5: There's four or five big ticket items and we got
- 26:36Speaker 5: to stop kicking the can down the road. And it's
- 26:38Speaker 5: never going to go away. The foster care issue is
- 26:40Speaker 5: not going to go away. You gotta fix it. You
- 26:42Speaker 5: got to It's going to be a long term fix.
- 26:43Speaker 5: I heard speaker Handsha'll say today it's time to roll
- 26:46Speaker 5: up our sleeves, bring people together and realize you can't
- 26:48Speaker 5: just pass one piece of legislation and expect the problem
- 26:50Speaker 5: to go away. You got to bring all the stakeholders together.
- 26:52Speaker 5: It could take time. You got to set the tone
- 26:54Speaker 5: for years to come. But you have to have funding
- 26:56Speaker 5: mechanism for some of our big problems like pe i A.
- 27:00Speaker 5: It's not going to go away. I mean, we have
- 27:02Speaker 5: to be good stewards of the people's money. Yes, we
- 27:04Speaker 5: also also be good employers and we employ a lot
- 27:07Speaker 5: of people and throughout the state and public employees, and
- 27:10Speaker 5: then you have to give them. You provide for them,
- 27:12Speaker 5: just like any other employer insurance. So it's our job,
- 27:16Speaker 5: you know, if we're going to have employees and act
- 27:18Speaker 5: as an employer to be good stewards of our employees.
- 27:21Speaker 5: So one thing we have to do is you can't
- 27:23Speaker 5: just say, oh, here's eighty six million dollars, let's fix
- 27:25Speaker 5: this whole. What's worry about in two years from now.
- 27:27Speaker 5: There needs to be a funding mechanism. There needs to
- 27:30Speaker 5: be constant funding for that. Another example, public education, all right,
- 27:34Speaker 5: we talk about it. We school choice is fantastic. You know,
- 27:37Speaker 5: it's great to go whichever school you want to go to.
- 27:39Speaker 5: That's fantastic. We've done a great job we focusing on
- 27:41Speaker 5: giving people choices, allowing people to use you know, certain dollars.
- 27:45Speaker 5: But what I don't don't forget about the public education system.
- 27:48Speaker 5: You can't take from one system and give to another
- 27:51Speaker 5: and not worry about the public education system. If you
- 27:53Speaker 5: want different results, you want to continue to move our
- 27:57Speaker 5: state forward, and all these business as that are coming here,
- 28:00Speaker 5: they look at our education system. They see what type
- 28:02Speaker 5: of education system we have. You have to quit talking
- 28:04Speaker 5: about it, and we got to put resources there to
- 28:06Speaker 5: flip it upside down. Maybe it's a different funding mechanism.
- 28:09Speaker 5: Figure out how the school formula is calculated. Just dive
- 28:13Speaker 5: deep into it. Let's put together a two, three, four,
- 28:15Speaker 5: five year plan. I think you're gonna hear the governor
- 28:17Speaker 5: talk about public education as well as school choice. You're
- 28:20Speaker 5: gonna hear them talk about the peia. You're gonna hear
- 28:22Speaker 5: them talk about the budget. Obviously, economic development and developing
- 28:25Speaker 5: our fossil fuels. You know, no one knows how this
- 28:28Speaker 5: tarif that China put on with the coal industry and
- 28:31Speaker 5: the fifteen percent and whatnot, you know, and export's coming in.
- 28:33Speaker 5: No one's going to know how that trickles down in
- 28:35Speaker 5: the little Old West Virginia because we send a lot
- 28:37Speaker 5: of trouble stuff to China. We send a lot of
- 28:39Speaker 5: coal outside the state. So we're waiting to see how
- 28:42Speaker 5: that affects us. But I do know that we have
- 28:44Speaker 5: you have a governor and you have a legislature who's
- 28:46Speaker 5: much in liigne to utilizing our fossil fuels and reaping
- 28:49Speaker 5: the economic benefits of that. But you know one thing
- 28:51Speaker 5: that's interesting. You talk about the next generation, and I'm
- 28:53Speaker 5: not sure the Governor's gonna mention this or not but
- 28:55Speaker 5: AI and all the opportunities out there, AI and all
- 28:58Speaker 5: that artificial intelligence need energy to power this artificial intelligence age.
- 29:03Speaker 5: And what does West Virginia have. We have a lot
- 29:05Speaker 5: of energy. So I hope we can seize the moment
- 29:08Speaker 5: on that. I hope we can bring these data centers here.
- 29:10Speaker 5: When I was in the legislature, we traveled all around
- 29:11Speaker 5: the country talking about bringing data centers here. And you
- 29:14Speaker 5: have powers by energy, and we have energy. So I'm
- 29:16Speaker 5: hoping the economic development. If I had to guess, the
- 29:19Speaker 5: big ticket out of economic development, peia public education. But
- 29:24Speaker 5: unfortunately there's always those social war issues that pop up
- 29:28Speaker 5: in the culture. Stuff.
- 29:29Speaker 3: Don't get me started.
- 29:30Speaker 5: And it's really two percent. We can agree at the
- 29:33Speaker 5: legislature and mile years here. I would vote on a
- 29:35Speaker 5: thousand bills, and probably nine hundred and ninety of them
- 29:38Speaker 5: we'd all vote together in the line. But then there's
- 29:40Speaker 5: ten or twelve that get the most heat by us
- 29:42Speaker 5: the media because they're the most controversial.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Well, and it's slow hanging fruit a lot of times.
- 29:47Speaker 3: You know you don't have to I mean, you know
- 29:48Speaker 3: the stuff that you mentioned is hard. Let me have
- 29:51Speaker 3: a text here for you, says ask why doesn't West
- 29:54Speaker 3: Virginia partner with neighboring states for a PEIA co op please?
- 29:58Speaker 5: I think I think we're gonna have to creative like that.
- 30:00Speaker 5: I think we're going to look at that. I think
- 30:02Speaker 5: anything we can do because we can't kee keeping it down.
- 30:05Speaker 5: We got to think differently, We got to act differently.
- 30:06Speaker 5: It's not going away. Other states are having the same
- 30:09Speaker 5: issue we are. And you know, we have so many
- 30:10Speaker 5: people that live along those neighboring states. You know, we
- 30:14Speaker 5: got to be able to pay they are what it's
- 30:16Speaker 5: our educators more and pay them better. But our state,
- 30:18Speaker 5: you know, people who work on our roads and our instructure.
- 30:20Speaker 5: Why would they choose to stay in West Virginian work
- 30:22Speaker 5: if we can't take care of them? So, yes, we
- 30:24Speaker 5: need to partner with them. We need to circle zones
- 30:26Speaker 5: around all the different key areas of the stay and
- 30:28Speaker 5: make sure we're in lined with the job opportunities around
- 30:31Speaker 5: the states. We don't lose our people.
- 30:32Speaker 3: All right. I got a couple of HD media questions
- 30:35Speaker 3: here for you, and we'll close with that question for you, says,
- 30:39Speaker 3: I know you have no control over coupons, but do
- 30:41Speaker 3: you know why paper coupon inserts have gotten so minimal
- 30:44Speaker 3: in the last five years. A lot of us depend
- 30:46Speaker 3: on those to keep our stockpiles filled up, to help family, friends,
- 30:49Speaker 3: and even donations.
- 30:50Speaker 5: Yes I do, and hey, I want those paper coupons
- 30:52Speaker 5: back because they pay us to put those paper coupons
- 30:54Speaker 5: in the paper. But unfortunately, the large look at the retailers.
- 30:58Speaker 5: Tell me, all the retailers that have moved out Pennies, Macy's,
- 31:01Speaker 5: you name it, they're all going to digital coupons. Now.
- 31:04Speaker 5: Look at Kroger's. Kroger's was one of the biggest inserts
- 31:07Speaker 5: of our papers almost weekly, and they started going digital coupons,
- 31:10Speaker 5: and they're send it to you. They want all those
- 31:11Speaker 5: phone numbers you put in to get those Kroger discounts. Yep,
- 31:14Speaker 5: that's how they track you. They want to be able
- 31:15Speaker 5: to track you. They want to be able to sendize
- 31:17Speaker 5: them and prioritize and distinguish who's which coupons go to
- 31:20Speaker 5: what person, And that's why they did away for it.
- 31:23Speaker 5: So they're cutting costs just like everybody is. So the
- 31:25Speaker 5: big manufacturers, whether it's Walmart, Kroger's, Macy's, Jason, they're all
- 31:29Speaker 5: getting rid of those coupons and they're going to the
- 31:32Speaker 5: digital coupons to save money, all right.
- 31:33Speaker 3: The other one that says I live in Winfield, but
- 31:35Speaker 3: I received the Canawa Metro instead of a Putnam one
- 31:38Speaker 3: I've emailed about this.
- 31:39Speaker 5: Well, that's a great question. Yeah, I'll need to look
- 31:41Speaker 5: at that. It depends on where you fall and what
- 31:44Speaker 5: the carriers and what they pick up. So depending on
- 31:46Speaker 5: I guarantee you half a Puttnam, it's split because you're
- 31:49Speaker 5: we a lot of people.
- 31:50Speaker 3: I live in Taze and I get the I get
- 31:51Speaker 3: the Putnam.
- 31:52Speaker 5: You either put them.
- 31:52Speaker 3: So obviously to this texture, you're gonna need to move
- 31:55Speaker 3: to Taste Valley.
- 31:55Speaker 5: I think tast value and move over here.
- 31:57Speaker 3: No, no, no, we'll look at that, all right.
- 31:58Speaker 5: Final clinical question, reach out to me, send me their address.
- 32:01Speaker 3: All right, there you go, there you go text, all right,
- 32:02Speaker 3: final question, serious biz here? All right, what's the future
- 32:05Speaker 3: look like for Dug scaff What are you gonna do?
- 32:06Speaker 3: You're not going away, don't don't try. You're gonna do
- 32:10Speaker 3: something else? Politically? What is it?
- 32:11Speaker 5: I love? I love giving back to people. Since I
- 32:13Speaker 5: was in eighth grade, I served the people of my class,
- 32:15Speaker 5: my high school, my junior high, my college, I always
- 32:18Speaker 5: love bringing people together and work, and so it's someday. Yeah,
- 32:20Speaker 5: I haven't rolled out running for office again when the
- 32:23Speaker 5: timing's right. But right now it's fun raising my three boys,
- 32:27Speaker 5: building this this media company, starting over, doing going more
- 32:31Speaker 5: digital age and at some point you'll see Doug scaff
- 32:34Speaker 5: whether it's running for office or being involved with the
- 32:36Speaker 5: committees or helping out in the process. I just want
- 32:38Speaker 5: to help make a difference here, just like you, Dave,
- 32:40Speaker 5: and whatever I can do to help make a difference,

- 35:35Speaker 3: we fix our social issues, the economic issues would solve themselves,
- 35:38Speaker 3: But our Chambers style Republicans flat out refused to think
- 35:41Speaker 3: any different. Smh, that's me. I think I feel targeted there.
- 35:45Speaker 3: I think he's going after me there? Or that the
- 35:47Speaker 3: textures I should say tex says day things will be
- 35:50Speaker 3: the same. It's all about social issues, telling people how
- 35:52Speaker 3: to live and spreading hate amongst our communities while the
- 35:55Speaker 3: state has hicked rock bottom, says a Texter. Wonder says

- 36:10Speaker 3: so welcome and Judge Mary clare Acres, how you doing.
- 36:13Speaker 14: I'm good, you said school. So I had to get
- 36:15Speaker 14: my phone out just in case they call and cancel.
- 36:18Speaker 3: Well, I mean, at this point, if you're it was
- 36:20Speaker 3: canon a two hour delay, right, all right, so it's
- 36:23Speaker 3: it's effectively seven forty three now, you know for that,
- 36:26Speaker 3: So I don't I mean, I'm gonna talk to Brian
- 36:29Speaker 3: Hughes a little bit later on. But they seem to
- 36:31Speaker 3: think that, you know, by by midday that it's going
- 36:35Speaker 3: to be mainly a rain event. You just came in.
- 36:36Speaker 3: What's it like out there now? I haven't been out
- 36:38Speaker 3: in a couple hours.
- 36:39Speaker 14: Well, it's not bad, I think to anybody who drives
- 36:41Speaker 14: around here, this is really not a big deal.
- 36:43Speaker 3: But you also have to keep in mind too that
- 36:45Speaker 3: you know, there's a big difference between here and when
- 36:47Speaker 3: you get out into like cap'n Creek or Capital, you know,
- 36:50Speaker 3: some of those other areas.
- 36:51Speaker 14: And I've got team drivers, so I'm not super comfortable
- 36:53Speaker 14: with them driving. I'm fine, but I don't know about them.
- 36:57Speaker 3: All right, It's time to marry up some people. It is.
- 36:59Speaker 14: It is that time year again. February fourteenth, Friday, which
- 37:02Speaker 14: is always a good day for weddings. We've got several
- 37:04Speaker 14: scheduled and we are ready for more if anybody out
- 37:07Speaker 14: there wants to do it.
- 37:08Speaker 3: All right, So explain the history of this.
- 37:10Speaker 14: Thing, Well, every year I explain it. This started with
- 37:13Speaker 14: Judge King, whose seat I was eventually appointed to. Before
- 37:17Speaker 14: I was elected to it, he and I were friends
- 37:19Speaker 14: and I was in front of him for a long
- 37:21Speaker 14: time as a prosecutor, and one year he kicked it
- 37:25Speaker 14: off and decided to do weddings on February fourteenth, and
- 37:28Speaker 14: it just kind of snowballed from there. He had stopped
- 37:30Speaker 14: doing it in the later years, but I revived it
- 37:33Speaker 14: as a way to remember him and think about the
- 37:36Speaker 14: fund that we had on those days.
- 37:37Speaker 3: Because it's been incredibly popular of the last couple of year, it.
- 37:40Speaker 14: Has people really like to do it.
- 37:43Speaker 3: So what do people need to make appointments? Is that
- 37:46Speaker 3: the way this works.
- 37:47Speaker 14: They can they can call my secretary, who is Mindy Martin,
- 37:51Speaker 14: and that number is three zero four three five seven
- 37:55Speaker 14: zero three six seven, or they can just walk in.
- 37:58Speaker 14: The Only thing you need is a valid license, which
- 38:01Speaker 14: you can get from any county clerk here in West Virginia. Okay,
- 38:03Speaker 14: I can do the wedding.
- 38:05Speaker 3: So is there a I mean, you have to forgive me.
- 38:07Speaker 3: It's been thirty two years since I last got married.
- 38:09Speaker 3: What is what a required? What's required to get married?
- 38:12Speaker 2: Now?
- 38:13Speaker 14: You go to the county clerk's office, as far as
- 38:15Speaker 14: I know, you pay them their fee, and they look
- 38:18Speaker 14: at your license whatever they do, and they give you
- 38:21Speaker 14: your license and you can get married immediately.
- 38:23Speaker 3: Okay, media, Because so wasn't there a waiting period of
- 38:25Speaker 3: want to pull you had to have a blood test?
- 38:26Speaker 14: I feel like there was, and maybe it was like
- 38:28Speaker 14: that when jab jump or something.
- 38:30Speaker 3: I don't know. There's something third.
- 38:31Speaker 14: Years ago which I have to say this, Dave. Today
- 38:34Speaker 14: is my husband's birthday.
- 38:35Speaker 3: Okay, his birthday, the honorable delegate.
- 38:37Speaker 5: The honorable delegate.
- 38:38Speaker 14: So I'm encouraging folks out there to wish him a
- 38:40Speaker 14: happy birthday however they can.
- 38:42Speaker 3: Just to Is it going to involve Relish?
- 38:44Speaker 7: I hope.
- 38:45Speaker 3: So you know this thing and last time I had
- 38:47Speaker 3: JB on the.
- 38:48Speaker 7: Show, he talked about.
- 38:49Speaker 3: It, this thing between between you and your husband, Delegate
- 38:53Speaker 3: Jbacres over hot Dog rewichh.
- 38:56Speaker 14: This whole thing started because he wore a T shirt
- 38:59Speaker 14: that said, I think it's a mustard onions I can't remember,
- 39:03Speaker 14: and he put it up on West Virginia Day and
- 39:06Speaker 14: I just commented, you forgot the relish and it kicked
- 39:08Speaker 14: off this whole thing that still lives on.
- 39:10Speaker 3: It's kind of taken in a life of its own.
- 39:13Speaker 9: It has.
- 39:14Speaker 14: People have really strong preferences about Relish on hot dogs,
- 39:17Speaker 14: and I do agree.
- 39:17Speaker 5: I like it.
- 39:18Speaker 3: People have strong preferences on hot dogs period, you know
- 39:22Speaker 3: here and I'm by hot dogs. Judge, this has gone
- 39:25Speaker 3: away off the rails. I'm by hot dogs like I
- 39:27Speaker 3: am by pizza. There are different kinds and depends on
- 39:30Speaker 3: where you My wife is. My wife is from Chicago,
- 39:32Speaker 3: the Chicago dogs, which is a totally different animals. I
- 39:36Speaker 3: also like a West Virginia dog, but I also like
- 39:38Speaker 3: the coney dog. You know, there's no bad hot.
- 39:40Speaker 14: Dogs, that's true. And I do say, we're in West Virginia.
- 39:43Speaker 14: We're always free to do what we want here. That's
- 39:45Speaker 14: our slogan. So however you want your hot dog, that's
- 39:47Speaker 14: the right way.
- 39:47Speaker 3: Yeah, you knock yourself out.
- 39:49Speaker 14: Yeah, absolutely, I'm winning the Relish wars. By the way,
- 39:51Speaker 14: I have to say that most people see.
- 39:53Speaker 3: Now, I like releisht a hot dog, but I don't
- 39:56Speaker 3: want it with chili. I want it just maybe relition
- 39:59Speaker 3: must or the chili in the rallies. Yeah, I don't
- 40:01Speaker 3: know so much about that. But anyway, all right, so
- 40:04Speaker 3: I do want to ask you in all seriousness. I
- 40:06Speaker 3: mean you and I joke a lout, but I do
- 40:08Speaker 3: want to ask you a very serious question. We'll get
- 40:11Speaker 3: back to the Valentine's de thing here in a moment.
- 40:13Speaker 3: A couple of weeks ago, we had a verdict rendered
- 40:15Speaker 3: by the jury and the White Feather Lance trial in
- 40:17Speaker 3: your court room. Now, don't want to get into specifics
- 40:19Speaker 3: or anything like that, but I want to talk about
- 40:21Speaker 3: the difficulty of handling a case like that that is
- 40:24Speaker 3: so high profile because this was everywhere, and just talk
- 40:30Speaker 3: about what goes into that again, not about this case,
- 40:33Speaker 3: any high profile case.
- 40:34Speaker 14: Well I can do that. I can talk about court procedures. Yes,
- 40:37Speaker 14: I'm allowed to talk about that. But just you know,
- 40:39Speaker 14: for the folks that are listening it, don't understand there
- 40:41Speaker 14: are rules for judges that dictate that we really we
- 40:45Speaker 14: can never talk about any case that may wind up
- 40:48Speaker 14: in front of us. We can never talk about any
- 40:50Speaker 14: case that is in front of us, so people maybe
- 40:52Speaker 14: don't understand why we're not able to speak.
- 40:54Speaker 7: But that's why.
- 40:56Speaker 14: For a case like this, you know, there were a
- 40:58Speaker 14: lot of people there. There were a lot of people
- 40:59Speaker 14: in the gallery. There were a lot of people in
- 41:01Speaker 14: and out, so we have to think about security every day.
- 41:04Speaker 14: We have to make sure we have enough people in
- 41:06Speaker 14: there to control the crowd. I mean, I'm sure you've
- 41:09Speaker 14: seen there was the guy in I can't remember what
- 41:12Speaker 14: state who ran up and tacked the judge in the
- 41:14Speaker 14: middle of the sentencing, so we have to be very
- 41:17Speaker 14: cognizant about safety. It's I mean, it can be nerve wracking.
- 41:24Speaker 14: There's just a lot of people in and out, so
- 41:25Speaker 14: it can be distracting. But frankly, I'm kind of used
- 41:28Speaker 14: to it because I tried so many cases as a
- 41:30Speaker 14: prosecutor and I've been in that environment a lot, so
- 41:33Speaker 14: it's not really unnerving. The only part to me that
- 41:36Speaker 14: is different is my back is not to the crowd anymore.
- 41:38Speaker 14: My face is to the front, so I can see
- 41:40Speaker 14: all of them, and I think a lot of the
- 41:41Speaker 14: people in the gallery don't realize I can see what
- 41:43Speaker 14: you're doing out there all right.
- 41:45Speaker 5: You think I can't, but.
- 41:48Speaker 3: She's a mother and a wife. She sees everything. She
- 41:50Speaker 3: sees everything. I appreciate you answering that because I thought
- 41:53Speaker 3: that was something very important. All right, went back to
- 41:56Speaker 3: why you're here Texas. Does the judge do val renewals
- 41:59Speaker 3: as well for Valentine's Day? Yes?
- 42:01Speaker 7: Absolutely.
- 42:02Speaker 14: If you want to renew your vows with your Valentine,
- 42:04Speaker 14: please come in. We were happy to do that as well.
- 42:07Speaker 14: Bring your friends and family.
- 42:08Speaker 5: It's fun, all.
- 42:09Speaker 3: Right, So let's talk about the procedure again. They need
- 42:11Speaker 3: to call. I mean, the walk ins are welcome, but
- 42:13Speaker 3: it might be good to call.
- 42:14Speaker 12: Sure.
- 42:15Speaker 3: I wouldn't think that with valent has they been on
- 42:16Speaker 3: a Friday, that you might have more people because they
- 42:19Speaker 3: have the weekend to go. Although it's going to be
- 42:20Speaker 3: incredibly wet this weekend. I would think that maybe you
- 42:23Speaker 3: want to, you know, wait a couple of days, but regardless,
- 42:26Speaker 3: I would think you have more.
- 42:27Speaker 14: Well, I mean, I think rain is good luck for weddings, right,
- 42:30Speaker 14: so if it rains on Friday, it's allegedly good luck.
- 42:32Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 42:33Speaker 14: Okay, good, but yes, you can call and make an
- 42:35Speaker 14: appointment with my secretary of MINDI three three zero four
- 42:38Speaker 14: three five seven zero three six seven, or you can
- 42:42Speaker 14: just walk in, but.
- 42:42Speaker 3: You have to have a valid get your stuff ahead
- 42:45Speaker 3: of time. Go down to Via.
- 42:46Speaker 14: Well, you can be from anywhere from West Virginia. I
- 42:48Speaker 14: do a lot of weddings folks from Putnam County and
- 42:50Speaker 14: Cable County.
- 42:50Speaker 3: Okay, there you go. So all right, So just from
- 42:52Speaker 3: your respective county clerk where you reside. It doesn't have
- 42:55Speaker 3: to be or does it happen mean if it does
- 42:58Speaker 3: not have to be a county can county license just
- 43:01Speaker 3: a county clerk. Any county clerk can do. Yeah, all right,
- 43:03Speaker 3: and we'll check in with you live from the courthouse
- 43:05Speaker 3: as well.
- 43:06Speaker 14: Friday, I have to plug Jab's birthday once again. Go ahead,
- 43:09Speaker 14: Happy birthday, JB. I love you very much. I hope
- 43:11Speaker 14: you're having a good day.
- 43:12Speaker 7: I'm sure that you're very busy.
- 43:14Speaker 3: Well, you know he's about to you're about to get
- 43:16Speaker 3: rid of him for a couple of months with the
- 43:18Speaker 3: with the session going on, So that's true.
- 43:19Speaker 14: One other thing I want to explain about Judges kind
- 43:21Speaker 14: of came to mind is that luck I get to
- 43:24Speaker 14: sit with him at the State of the state, which
- 43:26Speaker 14: is quite a privilege and I enjoy that. But you
- 43:28Speaker 14: will not see any of the judges clapping or standing
- 43:31Speaker 14: up like everyone else in the crowd when that goes on,
- 43:33Speaker 14: because we can't. So I like to explain that ahead
- 43:36Speaker 14: of time.
- 43:37Speaker 3: That's that's interesting. I didn't know that. I'm going to
- 43:39Speaker 3: have you on sometimes, judge, just to talk about rules
- 43:41Speaker 3: people don't know about. I'm happy to do that.
- 43:43Speaker 14: I would love to tell everyone why, because people scratch
- 43:46Speaker 14: their heads all the time. Why didn't the judge do this?
- 43:47Speaker 14: Why didn't the judge you that? And there's a lot
- 43:49Speaker 14: of reasons for all of those things.
- 43:51Speaker 3: Well, let's well, we'll block out some more time for
- 43:53Speaker 3: you on that. You'n going to talk about that.
- 43:55Speaker 14: But anybody who wants to get ready our wedding, I
- 43:57Speaker 14: can't talk anyone who wants to get married. Please, you're welcome.
- 44:01Speaker 14: Anybody who doesn't have a present for their Valentine thinks, hey,
- 44:04Speaker 14: let's do avour renewal. That's smart.
- 44:06Speaker 5: It's good.
- 44:07Speaker 7: Women like that.
- 44:07Speaker 3: Appreciate that texture point that, all right, Judge Mary Clareakers.
- 44:11Speaker 3: I appreciate you being here. Thanks a lot, all right.

- 47:45Speaker 3: rule of law went out when Trump became president. Let's
- 47:48Speaker 3: go to Brian Hughes. How are you, buddy.
- 47:52Speaker 6: It's been a long morning.
- 47:54Speaker 5: You think you think? All right?
- 47:56Speaker 3: All right? All right? So where are we right now?
- 47:58Speaker 3: I'm stuck. I haven't looked out the window. And because
- 48:00Speaker 3: I have this little radio thing, I do. So what's
- 48:02Speaker 3: going on?
- 48:03Speaker 12: Now?
- 48:03Speaker 3: How long is it going to last? And when the
- 48:04Speaker 3: spring here go?
- 48:06Speaker 10: Spring is not here getting here soon enough? So I'll
- 48:09Speaker 10: start there first. But right now, listen. More than anything,
- 48:13Speaker 10: this storm has overperformed across parts of the Paintsville, Logan, Madison,
- 48:19Speaker 10: Danville areas, back over to Beckley. Significant amount of accidents
- 48:25Speaker 10: on the urnpikeer in the Beckley area down on sixty
- 48:27Speaker 10: four east of Beckley. But you get up to the
- 48:31Speaker 10: Huntington I sixty four area Charleston, everything is in pretty
- 48:35Speaker 10: good shape. Main roads are fine, They're just wet. The
- 48:37Speaker 10: stone's been coming down, so it's going to continue to
- 48:40Speaker 10: come down for at least about another hour or two
- 48:42Speaker 10: before the rain showers start mixing again within the next
- 48:44Speaker 10: hour across the canal valley, and then we are going
- 48:47Speaker 10: to continue to see the snow slowly switching over to
- 48:50Speaker 10: rain as we head into the afternoon.
- 48:52Speaker 3: I think one Brian possibly had some people confused, was
- 48:55Speaker 3: that the winter storm warning goes till tomorrow morning. But
- 48:59Speaker 3: you guys have been saying all this thing's pretty much
- 49:01Speaker 3: going to be out of here. I mean, I mean,
- 49:02Speaker 3: the rain's going to stick around, which is more problematic
- 49:04Speaker 3: perhaps than what the snow is. But the snow and
- 49:07Speaker 3: things like that are going to pretty much move out
- 49:08Speaker 3: here for our area about afternoon.
- 49:10Speaker 10: Right, Yeah, exactly. I mean I've said that from the
- 49:13Speaker 10: very beginning. I'm more concerned about the water part of
- 49:16Speaker 10: things than i am the snow. At all, but in
- 49:19Speaker 10: fact and said, you know, all these schools of Long
- 49:22Speaker 10: Eyed sixty four should have never.
- 49:23Speaker 6: Gone on a two hour deway.
- 49:25Speaker 10: Just go to school in normal time.
- 49:26Speaker 5: They would be fine.
- 49:27Speaker 10: But you know they don't talk to me about that stuff.
- 49:30Speaker 10: So anyways, but the rain showers are going to take
- 49:34Speaker 10: over this afternoon and then going into the evening. It's
- 49:35Speaker 10: kind of like I've had multiple people ask me about
- 49:38Speaker 10: going up to the game up there at Mortgage Town.
- 49:40Speaker 5: You're fine, drive up there.
- 49:41Speaker 10: Morgane Town, watch that basketball game. You're in good shape.
- 49:44Speaker 10: There are a number of things you can do this afternoon.
- 49:45Speaker 10: But going down the turnpike right now is not.
- 49:48Speaker 6: A good idea.
- 49:49Speaker 10: Going down Cord or g down towards Madison Logan Williamson
- 49:53Speaker 10: not a good idea right now. So if anything, you
- 49:56Speaker 10: heading north, you're fine, Heading west, you're heading you're fine.
- 49:59Speaker 3: Just don't all right, Brian, I appreciate it, man, we'll
- 50:02Speaker 3: talk soon. Thanks a lot. Get some get some rest
- 50:04Speaker 3: when you can. Okay, it's still work in progress. Thank you, Brian.
- 50:08Speaker 3: Meteorologists Brian Hughes from Storm Tracker thirteen.
- 50:10Speaker 5: Yeah, I know.
- 50:11Speaker 3: My social media phil was filled this morning with people
- 50:14Speaker 3: you know, talking about the two hours lay and Brian
- 50:17Speaker 3: said they would have probably been better off to be
- 50:19Speaker 3: on the regular schedule than what they would have been
- 50:21Speaker 3: to beet But you know, you're never gonna make everybody happy.

- 50:49Speaker 3: Meadows is here. You got you got Young'un's right, buddy,
- 50:52Speaker 3: I do. Brian nailed it though, didn't he? I mean
- 50:55Speaker 3: doesn't always doesn't he always? I mean, look, you know,
- 50:58Speaker 3: I get friends that work at the area. But I'll say,
- 51:01Speaker 3: you know, I'm not saying disparaging things about any of
- 51:04Speaker 3: our wonderful mediaorologists in the area, but Brian and Spencer,
- 51:07Speaker 3: I think kind of take it to another level. And
- 51:09Speaker 3: they've been and as of right now, I walk outside
- 51:11Speaker 3: and they'll be a blizzard right now. They've nailed this
- 51:13Speaker 3: thing as far as what it's But now I do
- 51:16Speaker 3: want to say, though, if you are traveling on the
- 51:18Speaker 3: Turnpike heading down to Beckley, you heading down one nineteen
- 51:20Speaker 3: down toward my area of the world, boon Logan County,
- 51:25Speaker 3: probably not a good idea within the next couple of
- 51:27Speaker 3: hours because I saw some pictures. Man, it looked pretty
- 51:28Speaker 3: wicked down there. But here in the Charleston area, roads
- 51:31Speaker 3: seem to be pretty much just wet's can turn over
- 51:33Speaker 3: to rain, and the rain, as Brian said, is a
- 51:36Speaker 3: much bigger issue than what the snow is. All right,
- 51:39Speaker 3: what's on the show today, buddy?
- 51:40Speaker 18: So coming up today we start off at ten oh six.
