- 0:00Hey everyone-welcome back to The Science of Leading.
- 0:02I'm Claire Monroe, and, as always,
- 0:04I'm here with Edwin Carrington.
- 0:04Edwin,
- 0:07I've been thinking a lot about interviews lately-especially after our
- 0:10last few episodes on hiring strategy and team fit.
- 0:10It's kind of wild how
- 0:15much we still rely on, like...
- 0:16resumes, right?
- 0:16Totally.
- 0:19I've seen it again and again-people get blinded by credentials.
- 0:19But a
- 0:24resume?
- 0:24It just tells you what someone's done,
- 0:27not how they'll actually respond when things get tough.
- 0:27The real question
- 0:32is-can they adapt?
- 0:34Can they collaborate?
- 0:35Can they grow with your team?
- 0:35That's what matters.
- 0:39Especially once a company starts to scale.
- 0:39Yeah,
- 0:43and I mean... I learned that the hard way.
- 0:43The first time I sat on a hiring
- 0:48panel, I was so focused on asking the "right" questions-you know,
- 0:51like, "What are your strengths?" or "Where do you see yourself in five
- 0:55years?"I thought I was being super thorough,
- 0:58but...
- 0:59honestly?
- 0:59I walked away knowing basically nothing about how any of those
- 1:03candidates would actually handle the job.
- 1:05It all felt so...
- 1:06surface-level.
- 1:06That's a really common trap.
- 1:06Those kinds of questions feel
- 1:11safe-but they don't tell you much.
- 1:11You end up hiring the best storyteller
- 1:16in the room, not necessarily the best fit.
- 1:16And like we talked about in
- 1:21that first-hire episode-one wrong person can impact a team for years.
- 1:21Exactly.
- 1:21And
- 1:27I think a lot of leaders still kinda believe that if someone's qualifications
- 1:30check out, that's enough.
- 1:30But, like...
- 1:32the research doesn't back that up.
- 1:34Credentials don't tell you how someone's gonna deal with real-life pressure-or
- 1:38fit into your culture.
- 1:38It's more about potential than,
- 1:41you know, pedigree.
- 1:41Right.
- 1:41The best candidates are the ones who can evolve.
- 1:46Who show resilience, self-awareness.
- 1:46And that means we need to rethink
- 1:51the goal of an interview.
- 1:51It's not about ticking boxes-it's about uncovering
- 1:56values.
- 1:56Adaptability.
- 1:58Mindset.
- 1:58That's where the long-term wins are.
- 1:58Sooo...
- 2:02if the old questions aren't cutting it,
- 2:04what should we be asking instead?
- 2:04I know you've got your go-to favorites,
- 2:08Edwin.
- 2:08I do.
- 2:08There are five I always come back to.
- 2:12They're behavioral, situational-designed to show how someone thinks and
- 2:17acts when things get real.
- 2:17First one's simple: "Tell me about a time you
- 2:23faced a major challenge at work.
- 2:25How did you handle it?"It sounds basic-but it gets candidates to be
- 2:25specific.
- 2:31You hear how they problem-solve,
- 2:33how they bounce back.
- 2:33Oh, I love that one.
- 2:33Way better than just,
- 2:37"How do you handle stress?"Because now you're getting a story,
- 2:41not some rehearsed theory.
- 2:41And you can dig deeper,
- 2:44right?
- 2:44Like-"Who else was involved?" or "What would you do differently now?"Exactly.
- 2:44Second
- 2:50one is, "What's one project or accomplishment in your career that you're
- 2:54really proud of?"That one reveals what drives them.
- 2:58What they care about.
- 2:58I remember a guy years ago-looked average on paper.
- 2:58But
- 3:05then he told this story about leading a cross-functional team through
- 3:08a tough product launch...The obstacles,
- 3:11the collaboration, the outcome-he lit up.
- 3:11It completely shifted my impression.
- 3:18We hired him-and he crushed it.
- 3:18Yes!
- 3:18You can totally tell when someone's
- 3:22just rattling off a win...
- 3:24or when they're genuinely invested.
- 3:24And that tells you a lot about what
- 3:28they value.
- 3:28Like-do they light up about teamwork,
- 3:31or are they just in it for the solo spotlight?
- 3:31Exactly.
- 3:31Third question
- 3:37is, "Describe your ideal work environment.
- 3:40What kind of culture helps you thrive?"That's where you tap into culture
- 3:45fit.
- 3:45Because if someone needs tons of structure,
- 3:48but your team runs fast and loose-that's gonna be friction,
- 3:52fast.
- 3:52Right-and it's not just what they want,
- 3:55but why.
- 3:55Like, do they know what actually helps them do great work?
- 3:55Or
- 4:00are they just tossing out buzzwords?
- 4:00Exactly.
- 4:00Fourth one is,
- 4:05"How do you prioritize when everything feels like a priority?"These
- 4:05days-everyone's
- 4:12juggling a dozen things.
- 4:12You want to know if they've got a real system-or
- 4:16if they're just...
- 4:17reacting.
- 4:17Yeah, I always listen for the thought process.
- 4:17Do they talk about
- 4:21urgency?
- 4:22Business impact?
- 4:22Or how they loop in their team when things shift?
- 4:22Right
- 4:26on.
- 4:26And finally-this one's big:"If you were hired,
- 4:31what would be your 30-60-90-day plan?"It separates the ones who've done
- 4:36their homework from the ones just winging it.
- 4:36Great candidates tie their
- 4:41plan to your goals.
- 4:42They think ahead.
- 4:43They want to contribute.
- 4:43Oof-yeah,
- 4:46that's a game-changer.
- 4:46If someone shows up with a clear plan?
- 4:46You know
- 4:50they're serious.
- 4:50And you can see whether their vision actually fits what
- 4:53your team needs.
- 4:53So, these five questions-they're not just about,
- 4:58like, checking for skills...They tell you about mindset.
- 5:01Motivation.
- 5:02Whether someone's gonna click.
- 5:02Exactly.
- 5:02And when you really listen-and
- 5:07follow up where it matters-you start to see who's just trying to get the
- 5:11job...
- 5:12and who's gonna thrive once they're in it.
- 5:12Okay,
- 5:14so-smart questions are one thing.
- 5:14But I know you're big on pairing those
- 5:18with data.
- 5:18Can you talk about how OAD fits into all this?
- 5:18Absolutely.
- 5:18Even
- 5:24the best interviewers miss things.
- 5:24That's where tools like the OAD survey
- 5:29come in.
- 5:29It's a behavioral assessment-shows you how someone's wired.
- 5:29How
- 5:35they'll communicate, respond to feedback,
- 5:37mesh with your culture.
- 5:37It's not about replacing interviews-it's adding
- 5:42depth.
- 5:42When you combine good questions with behavioral data,
- 5:47you cut way down on those costly hiring mistakes.
- 5:47Yeah-and I remember
- 5:52that story from a few episodes back...That tech company,
- 5:55like 200 people?
- 5:55They started using OAD alongside interviews-And their
- 6:00retention numbers improved.
- 6:00They even spotted a few red flags that would've
- 6:04totally slipped through if they'd just gone with gut instinct.
- 6:04But...
- 6:08do you think data can really replace intuition?
- 6:08Or is there still a place
- 6:12for that gut feeling?
- 6:12Good question.
- 6:12I'd say-intuition still matters.
- 6:12But
- 6:19it's not the whole picture.
- 6:19Our instincts come from experience,
- 6:23sure-but they also come with bias.
- 6:23Data gives you a gut check.
- 6:23I've seen
- 6:30candidates who felt like a perfect fit-but OAD showed a mismatch.
- 6:30When
- 6:35we looked closer, the data had it right.
- 6:35So I wouldn't toss out intuition-but
- 6:41I'd always challenge it.
- 6:42Use data to sharpen your judgment.
- 6:42I like that.
- 6:42It's kind of like what
- 6:47we said back in "Hiring Smarter,
- 6:49Not Harder"-Empathy plus data makes the best decisions.
- 6:49And when you've
- 6:54got a structured process, it's not just about better hires.
- 6:54You're building
- 6:58trust with the candidates, too.
- 6:58They feel that fairness.
- 6:58Exactly.
- 6:58As teams
- 7:05grow, that consistency becomes more and more important.
- 7:05Combining sharp
- 7:09questions with behavioral insight-that's how you build teams that last.
- 7:09It's
- 7:14not about hiring the "perfect" person.
- 7:14It's about finding someone who can
- 7:18evolve, collaborate, and contribute-long term.
- 7:18Mmm,
- 7:22I think that's the perfect spot to wrap up.
- 7:22And hey-if you wanna see how
- 7:26these strategies work in real life, check out o-a-d-dot-a-i.
- 7:29You test it out for free and see how tools like OAD make hiring way easier.
- 7:29Edwin,
- 7:34thanks-always so good learning from you.
- 7:34Thank you,
- 7:37Claire.
- 7:37Always a pleasure.
- 7:37And thanks to everyone listening.
- 7:37Keep asking
- 7:42better questions-and we'll catch you next time on The Science of Leading.
- 7:42Bye,
- 7:46everyone!
- 7:46Goodbye, Claire.
- 7:47Goodbye, all.
