- 0:55our listeners at the Later on in the program, we will bring you the
- 1:00final part of the McCormick matter. But first I'm going to bring you something
- 1:06a little different. If we had more episodes of this program, we would
- 1:11air it on Saturdays, but there's only one episode in existence, and we're
- 1:17taking this time when we're doing the Johnny Dollars serials to play some of these
- 1:23rarer fifteen minute programs that are still intact. And this is certainly quite an
- 1:33interesting show. It aired over ABC in nineteen forty six and over Mutual in
- 1:38nineteen forty seven. Title was Policewoman, and it told the real life exploits
- 1:46and stories of Lieutenant Mary Sullivan of the NYPD. I'll tell you a little
- 1:52bit more about Lieutenant Sullivan after the program, or after this program. But
- 1:57here from June twenty ninth, nineteen forty seven is the case of the Scheming
- 2:04Ridegroom, Carter's Pills Present Police Walla Tonight the Case of the Scheming Bridegroom,
- 2:15based on an episode in the career of Lieutenant Mary Sullivan for thirty five years
- 2:20on the New York City Police Force. Lieutenant Sullivan. Yes, they told
- 2:30me to speak to you. Oh who are you, Biancriazzo? And what's
- 2:36on your mind? Well, you see, I want to get married.
- 2:39Well, what do you want a city hall, young lady. Not the
- 2:42police department. No, no, no, I do not make myself clear.
- 2:45Apparently not, will you see? I want to get married? So
- 2:47I read the ad in the Lonely Hearts magazine. Oh here city advertisement.
- 2:53Oh yes, sounds like most of the others. Oh no, this one
- 2:57is different. Then why don't you answer it? I should like to only
- 3:01I'm afraid, afraid, afraid of what this man who looks for the wife.
- 3:07I think he's a murderer. Before we continue with tonight's policewoman adventure,
- 3:23here is something we feel you should know about. If you're out driving and
- 3:27see a train coming, would you try to beat it to the crossing,
- 3:30of course not then, friends, Listen, stop dosing your stomach with soda
- 3:34or alkalizers for indigestion if your trouble is irregularity. Instead unblocked your digestive tract
- 3:39for the real relief you want. For your real trouble is not in the
- 3:43stomach, but in the rest of the digestive tract, where eighty percent of
- 3:46your food is digested, and when the lower part gets blocked, food may
- 3:50fail to digest easily. Thus, for real relief, don't take soda or
- 3:53an alkalizer. You want something to unblock your lower digestive tract, something to
- 3:59clean it up gently but effectively help nature get back on her feet. Get
- 4:03Carter's pills right now. Because taken us directed, Carter's pills gently and effectively
- 4:09unblock your digestive tract. This permits all five of Nature's own digestive juices to
- 4:14mix better with your food. You get genuine relief from indigestions, or you
- 4:17can feel really good again. Buy Carter's pills at any drug store and let
- 4:21Carter's pills unblock your digestive tract for real relief from indigestion due to irregularity.
- 4:29Now back to a policewoman. The case of the scheming bridegroom, Sargeant Clark
- 4:44is earlier. Today, Bianco Riozzo came in to see me. It seems
- 4:48she works as a maid in an apartment on Fifth Avenue. Oh, well,
- 4:51about six months ago, there was a cook in that house named Freedom.
- 4:56Both girls began answering these lovelorn ads. You know, the ones appear
- 5:00in certain magazines. Oh, your wife wanted so, yes, Well,
- 5:03Frieda answered an ad and then left for California. Yes, and I can
- 5:06guess the rest of it. Mary. The man who sent for her was
- 5:09a crop wanted to cheat her out of her life savings. Worse than that
- 5:12sergeant murder exactly. Now. Bianca gave me a full description, and I
- 5:17started calling the California police. I learned that a girl answering Frieda's description was
- 5:23found dead in Newtown, California, about six months ago. Everything checks.
- 5:28Did they catch the killer? No? All they have are some fingerprints which
- 5:30were left on Frida's handbag. Well, how come Bianca came to see you
- 5:34today? Well, last night she ran across another advertisement in this Lonely Hearts
- 5:39magazine. The ad was identical with the one that Frieda adds it. Oh,
- 5:43he shifted his operations from California to New York. Right? Does Bianca
- 5:46know that Frieda's intended looked like Yes, Frieda showed her a picture. That's
- 5:50all she knows. Well, it's a matter of the fingerprint. Yes,
- 5:56Now if I could get a sample, Mary, don't tell me you're a
- 6:01right sergeant. I need a husband desperate, so I'm answering that ad myself
- 6:08right away. Hello, Hello, Bianca, this is Lieutenant Mary Sullivan.
- 6:21Yes, I've received an answer. The man's name is Pete Milford. We

- 9:22myself on your desk, it's got Pete Milford's fingerprints all over it. Now,

- 9:28The Commissioner Williams, Newtown, California, got that? Have him?

- 9:37Uncle Shorty, he lives out on Jamaica Bay. No, no,

- 10:58get you. Yeah, in the morning, draw the money out. What
- 11:01do you got to say to that? Seat. Mary. All I gotta
- 11:05say is that things are working out. Might have fine. Hello, sergeant,
- 11:20this is Mary Sullivan. Where were you all day yesterday? Mary?
- 11:24Well, just so happens. I was out at to make a bay and
- 11:26oh, by the way, I'm going back there tonight. You see,
- 11:31Pete Milford will be with me tonight and I expect the payoff. Yeah.
- 11:35Now, listen. The address is forty seven Front Street. You got that.
- 11:39Yeah, it's way out in Brooklyn. It's a lonely spot, just
- 11:43the house and water. That is, in case you're interested. I'm sure
- 11:46I'm interested. To listen, Mary, I've got news. Oh you have
- 11:50go ahead, got a report from California this morning. Well, don't keep
- 11:54me in suspense. The fingerprints found on the dead girl are not Pete Milford.
- 12:01Marry Mary is still there. Yeah, yeah, I kind of expected
- 12:05something else. Yeah, I know you still going to keep that date with
- 12:09pet Yeah. Oh this is a setback, I admit, but I can't
- 12:15drop Peete until I'm sure it's nice out here near the bay and the twilight,
- 12:28an't I'm Mary, I thought you Uncle Shorty was going to be waiting
- 12:33with his car. Uncle Shorty went down and rode for a while, pick
- 12:37up some tools. I'm kind of glad we're alone. Yeah, because we're
- 12:43going to be married. I think there's something you ought to know. Mary.
- 12:48Oh what's that? Pete? Well, you see, I'm not much
- 12:52for a book learning, Mary. In fact, I can hardly read and
- 12:56write. Well, I wouldn't hold that against the man. I wait a
- 13:01minute. You say you can hardly read a write. Yeah, I hope
- 13:05it makes no difference. Then who put that ad in the magazine and answered
- 13:09my letter? Huh? That was miuncle Shorty's doing. Pete, listening to
- 13:13me carefully? Did you ever advertise for a wife before? You didn't advertise
- 13:20six months ago? Get an answer and ask the girl to come to California?
- 13:22Not me? I ain't never been in California. You can trust me.
- 13:26Mary. Well, now, Pete, I've got something to tell you.
- 13:31You see, I happen to be a policewoman. What and I want
- 13:33to know the truth. Were you in California six months ago? No?
- 13:37No, Mary, not me. My My uncle Shorty was, but not
- 13:39me. I don't. Don't you know? It's not to keep your trap
- 13:41shut, keep your hands a policewoman. You know too much now, very
- 13:46smart scheme you cook up shorty six months ago, you placed an ad in
- 13:50a magazine under your nephew's name. It was answered by a girl named Frida.
- 13:52She came out west and you murdered her for a saving bread cover.
- 13:56You knew the blame would point to Peach. Oh what you're both in blow
- 13:58this town? We have other ideas. Coyea lucky, I didn't forget the
- 14:11address of this place. I was right outside. I saw and heard it
- 14:13off. Hey is it the guy who's been courting her? Yeah, that's
- 14:18me. Looks like you lost your wife. Yeah, but we caught a
- 14:24murderer in just a moment. Mary Sullivan in person will tell you more about
- 14:37tonight's policewoman case in the meantime. Does you're underarm deodorant really protect you and

- 15:50committed. This is the last program of our current series, and I want
- 15:54to thank my many listeners from coast to coast for their kind letters of ventist
- 16:00and hope they've enjoyed the show as much as I have. Until we meet
- 16:03again on the air. This is Lieutenant Mary Sullivan saying AWA, thank you,
- 16:08Mary Sullivan. This program, as well as all other programs of the
- 16:12series, was based on an episode in the career of Lieutenant Mary Sullivan for
- 16:17thirty five years on the New York City Police Force. This is Dick Dunham
- 16:21speaking in the dramatic portion of tonight's Policewoman case. Leading roles were played by
- 16:37Betty Gard and Walter Vaughn. Policewoman is a Phillips h Lord production. This
- 16:56is ABC, the American Broadcasting Company. Welcome back. Very interesting to hear
- 17:06Lieutenant Sullivan on this program. At this point she was retired. Hers is
- 17:12a remarkable story. When her husband died in nineteen o six, she found
- 17:18herself a twenty one year old single mother and she had to support herself as
- 17:23a traveling saleswoman. Then a friend suggested that she taken exam to join the
- 17:30New York Police Department as a policewoman. She did join in nineteen eleven.
- 17:36He had a great way with people and an ability to get them to open
- 17:40up and find out the truth. And she started out, as most of
- 17:44the policewomen did at the time, as a jail matron. And she also
- 17:52had a great knack for acting and out undercover work. She worked very hard
- 17:57at that. She created several undercover characters, and some of them, according
- 18:07to this website, included a trained nurse, a gangster's wife, a wealthy
- 18:10widow, a prisoner, and I madam looking for young girls to buy.
- 18:15And she really was a consummate actor and did a lot of this undercover work,
- 18:22and her real big case came in the Rosenthal murder case. She was
- 18:30a key to getting the went undercover and got the information to capture all four
- 18:40gunmen and led to their conviction. Nineteen eighteen, she was assigned to the
- 18:45NYPD Homicide Squad, which was another first for women, and then in nineteen
- 18:51twenty five she was or nineteen twenty six, she became the first Director of
- 18:59Police woman in the nation and held that job for twenty years. So we
- 19:04got to hear on the show the voice of a great pioneer and a heroine,
- 19:11Lieutenant Mary Sullivan of the NYPD. And if I ever find any more
- 19:17of those episodes, I'll certainly share them with you. Now it's time for
- 19:21today's episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dowler The McCormick Matter, Part five from the
- 19:30Hollywood. It's time now for Bob Bailey as Johnny Doler. Ready with your
- 19:36party in Hartford, Connecticut. Mister Donner, go ahead, please, how
- 19:38a mister Barnes, This is Johnny Deller. Johnny, what's up? I
- 19:42listened carefully ed. I've just been shot. Oh it's nothing serious. I'm
- 19:47backstage at the Elmar Theater. And the Bronx. Johnny, I'm all right,
- 19:51now, listen to me. I got a tip from old Mike Karn,
- 19:53a convict, that a man named Joe Penny might have had something to
- 19:56do with the McCormick case a few years ago jewelry case hundred thousand dollars.
- 20:00Well, Penny's been murdered. I didn't get a chance to learn anything from
- 20:04him, but I have learned that Penny's ex wife is married to Julian McCormick.
- 20:08You've contacted our New York office. I've been trying to get your man,
- 20:11Frank Porter at his home, but no one answers. It's going to
- 20:15be pretty nasty for Allied Casualty if she pottered with this. Joe Penny to
- 20:18Rob McCormick. Yeah, do you want me to wait and let Frank Porter
- 20:21handle it? No? No, No, you go ahead. Somebody's throwing
- 20:25bullets around. They'd better be stopped before well, by me rather than Frank
- 20:30Porter. Huh Okay, tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey in the
- 20:41transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expense Account, America's fabulous freelance
- 20:47insurance investigator, Yours Trulli Johnny Doller expense accounts submitted by a special investigator,
- 21:03Johnny Dollar to the Allied Casualty and Insurance Company Limited, Markham Building, Hartford,
- 21:07Connecticut. The following is an accounting of expenditure has incurred during my investigation
- 21:11of the McCormick matter. At am eleven seven dollars and a half one bottle
- 21:18of scotch, which I sent the stage doorman out to get while I was
- 21:21calling it barth an Allied Insurance. Apparently everybody in the neighborhood through thought.
- 21:26The exchange of shots between me and somebody in a long black coop were backfires.
- 21:30It was the dorman who dragged me back in the theater. You got
- 21:36yourself a boy, now, mister, it's just a grace. I shouldn't
- 21:40get you. Corner assures people anopoly. Somebody fires a gonn at you call
- 21:42a cop. Have another drink. That's the way. She's hey, hey,
- 21:45where are you going? You? She a doctor. Later, I
- 21:52went back outside in the alley with a shooting had taken place. Ten minutes
- 21:56of looking around, and I dug a pair of thirty eight slugs out of
- 21:59a tele vom Post expense account out of twelve four dollars and thirty five cents
- 22:08cab Fair Elmar Theater to Long Island. It was twelve o'clock straight up when
- 22:12I got to the McCormick home. There were no lights burning and apparently everyone
- 22:17had retired for the night. I checked the garage first, a fifty five
- 22:22Cadillac convertible and a four year old Jay. No warm motives, no black
- 22:26coops. I went to the house. Oh it's you, hello, missus
- 22:37mccar No, no, please, please, don't come in here. My
- 22:40husband. Oh please. I don't know who you are, but I remember
- 22:44meeting you at the hotel. The other I'm Johnny Dollar, an insurance investigating
- 22:47insurance. Oh well, there must be some way we can fix this up.
- 22:51Talk to me tomorrow. I'll meet you somehow. How can you fix
- 22:53up? Murder? Murder? What are you talking about? Joe Penny's dead,
- 22:57your ex husband. He was shot with a twenty five, just like
- 23:02the one you swung at me at the hotel. Oh no, you want
- 23:06to tell me about that, all right, I'll tell you. Joe was
- 23:11your husband once you helped him rob this house five years ago. He couldn't
- 23:15have done it alone. He wasn't that slick, He wasn't that good.
- 23:18He could steal a car, but a safe lock's different from ignition. Well,
- 23:23yes, as I helped him do it. He made me. He
- 23:27promised me if I helped him, I'd never hear from him again. I
- 23:32hope him the safe for him. But you were down to see him at
- 23:33his hotel the other night. You searched his room, searched his room.
- 23:37Yeah, well, I don't know anything about that. He called me,
- 23:40said he wanted money. I didn't know where he'd been for these last few
- 23:44years up the river. Oh well he wanted money. Oh, he wasn't
- 23:48there when I went there, and I was and a gun. I went
- 23:52down there to kill him. But I didn't see him, not then later
- 23:55somewhere. I haven't seen him at all. I'd tell you just talked to
- 23:57him on the phone. I don't suppose it did make any difference if I
- 24:02told you I had a good reason, if I told you I loved my
- 24:06husband very much, not likely. And view of the facts, you helped
- 24:08your ex husband rob him of a hundred thousand dollars worth of jewelry five years
- 24:12ago. Oh, I can explain that. Joe came around when we got
- 24:15back from my honeymoon. It's an old story I passed, isn't all it?
- 24:22Well? Anyhow, Joe threatened to tell my husband about it unless I
- 24:26gave him money. I didn't have any, so I opened the safe for
- 24:29him that night. It was all I could think to do. Yeah,
- 24:32then you split with him later on. I told you I haven't seen him.
- 24:36Why would I want to do that. I have everything I want in
- 24:38life right here, mostly my husband. Well, it's still a policeman of
- 24:44missus McCormick. I spent a long time looking for you. Maybe you better
- 24:48get your caught iris. You'll remain exactly where you are, Julian, and
- 24:52so will you, mister Dalla. Julian, you heard what I said.
- 24:56Don't worry about it, my dear mister Dalla, I'm a gentleman, but
- 25:00this is a gun. I noticed a thirty eight. I got a couple
- 25:03of slugs in my pocket that came from it. Stand over there, Alice
- 25:07is pretty silly. You can put that thing away and we can settle this
- 25:10anyway. She has told you the absolute truth, mister Dollar. She's innocent
- 25:14of any wrongdoing so far as i'm concerned. Is that clear? It's pretty
- 25:18glib McCormick. She's accessory to one hundred thousand dollars heist and she hasn't done
- 25:22anything wrong. If she wanted to give them away my ex husband, to
- 25:25anybody that was her affair, I would not press charges. Well, that
- 25:30takes care of you. How are you going to square it with allied casualty
- 25:33in the state of New York? And you also forget a little matter of
- 25:36a dead man? But I haven't forgotten you who mister dollar? Julian,
- 25:38Please don't. I've caused enough trouble. Please calm yourself, my dear.
- 25:44This is the least I can do for you after what you've done for me
- 25:48just being my wife. Mister Dollar, will you accept money? Not enough
- 25:53for murder? Fifty hundred thousand? I'd hate to kill you, mister Dollar.
- 26:03You tried once tonight. You've referred to that before, but you weren't
- 26:06very good, and now you're even worse. You forgot to take the safety
- 26:07off that gun. Oh you've killed If you've killed ah, he's all right,
- 26:15Get out of the wayne. Let me see that gun. I wasn't
- 26:25interested in either one of them for the moment I was looking at the thirty
- 26:27eight I'd taken from Julian McCormick. There was a smear of cosmoline still inside
- 26:32the barrel. I sniffed it, checked it, found all chambers loaded.
- 26:36It was a brand new weapon and it had never been fired. Expense account
- 26:45item thirteen five dollars and a half cab fair again, this time from Long
- 26:48Island to an apartment in Queen's The man I wanted to see was Allied Casually's
- 26:52man, Frank Porter. He lived in a very polite neighborhood, that department
- 27:00three. But mister Porter's not into I'll wait for him, Yes, sir,
- 27:06it's all right if I sit in your lobby, isn't it. Oh,
- 27:08yes, sir, Yes sir. But I'd prefer that you waited somewhere
- 27:11else. He was, this is a rather exclusive apartment buildings, and we
- 27:15don't like people loitering in the lobby. Well, I'm on a pretty exclusive
- 27:21mission. But you don't like the mud on my clothes, in the terror
- 27:25on my coat. Are you a friend of mister Porter? Yeah, good
- 27:29friend. He wouldn't mind if I waited in his apartment. Of that's what
- 27:33you mean? No, sir, impossible, but a couple of bucks can
- 27:40do wonders. Sometimes. It was quite a layout, books, pictures,
- 27:47furniture and whatnots that make living at home pretty agreeable. I propped myself up
- 27:52on a stool at Frank's little bar, poured myself a drink and sat there
- 27:56waiting for him. I was like that. Half an hour later when he
- 28:00showed up, he looked a little unsteady on his feet. Je Wish,
- 28:07Johnny dark Hi, the last person in the world I expected to see that
- 28:11enlightened and let you in. I didn't think it mine, no, and
- 28:15not at all. I tried to phone you earlier tonight you were out.
- 28:18I'm sorry, Jeep Wish. What's on your mind, Johnny? I wanted
- 28:25to tell you I was shot at tonight. Well, I wanted to tell
- 28:26you I found out who Missus McCormick is and was. Since you were on
- 28:32the case first for Allied, I thought i'd tell you first. You wish
- 28:36say, this is a nice set up, falling nice things. I've been
- 28:41in places like this before, Frank. They usually started three hundred or better
- 28:45a month, but made service, phone service. All those things cost money,
- 28:51A lot of money. Don't they, Frank, cheap wish? When'd
- 28:56you tumbled to a Johnny? A little while ago, when I was out
- 29:00on Long Island, Julian McCormick made me a proposition. He finally offered me
- 29:04one hundred thousand dollars, a lot of money. He sounded like he'd had
- 29:08experience making propositions. I should have tumbled to it a couple of days ago
- 29:14when you phoned the parole office after I left you you use my name when
- 29:18you asked for Joe Penny's address. Yeah, I wondered if your tip was
- 29:22on the right track. I didn't figure Joe Penny was eligible for parole so
- 29:26quick. I had to get to him before you did. He wasn't the
- 29:30cay and keep his mouth shut? You shut it for him, didn't you,
- 29:32Frank? Mind if I said, I'm Johnny, now go ahead.
- 29:37They'll be strapping it down one of these days. No, one hundred and
- 29:41a half a week investigating claims by nice places like this. He was one
- 29:48of those lucky things, Johnny. When I was called along Island to investigate
- 29:52that heist five years ago, I met McCormick's wife. Happened to recognize her
- 29:56as Joe Penny's X, and you knew mccarmy mick was in love with his
- 30:00wife enough to pay you to keep quiet. Now I gave him service for
- 30:03your money. The cops would have broken that case in twenty four hours,
- 30:07but I covered up all the tracks I can find, and I made a
- 30:11real safe by seeing Joe sent up the river. How just tipped off the
- 30:15cops to some of his hot car deals, and he picked him up.
- 30:21He happened to be carrying a gun, so he got the works. Then
- 30:23you just sat around drawing blackmail from McCormick. Chiefs. Don't look at me
- 30:29like that, Johnny. Every guy has a price, how about you.
- 30:34That's the second offer I've had tonight. It's a good one. Joe Penny
- 30:38was a dumb guy. He picked up that jewelian win right down town and
- 30:41pucked it in a safe deposit box. He's been setting here all the time
- 30:45he was up the river. Still worth sorry, Frank? You sure?
- 30:51I'm sure? Chief Chief wis Johnny you are a good dick. You don't
- 30:57buy off. I just wanted to see. I get sure, Frank,
- 31:03Well do we go in quietly? You'd be surprised, Johnny, how quiet.
- 31:10You better diet for an ambulance if you want me to go to try
- 31:12on you. You're good at alley back at the theater to night, Johnny.
- 31:18When I tried to knock you off, ballot you all night looking for
- 31:22my chance, you nicked me twice. Diala duck, quick, quick,
- 31:29jeez, it hurts. He died right there without saying the disposition of the
- 31:45case and what to do about Frank Porter, an insurance adjuster who goes bad.
- 31:48There's a matter I don't have to handle, and I'm glad. Expense
- 31:56account Item fourteen hotel and board in New York City seventy dollars and thirty cents.
- 32:00Itdem fifteen eighty four dollars legal fees and incidental expenses involved in locating the
- 32:07widow of Mike cairns Or, which seems is still alive somewhere in Iowa,
- 32:12and will accept half the reward as promised. Item sixteen fourteen dollars even transportation
- 32:19back to Hartford. Expense account total two hundred and sixty five dollars and ninety
- 32:22one cents. Remarks she was yours, tully, Johnny Dollar. Now here's
- 32:42our star, Bob Bailey to tell you about next week's story. Thanks next
- 32:45week the story of a ship the Molly k Destination, Davy Jones Locker join

- 33:04direction of Jack Johnstone Hurt In this week's cast where Mary Jane Croft, Virginia

- 33:16join us on Monday night, same time and station for another exciting story of
- 33:21Yours Truly Johnny Duller, Roy Rowan speaking welcome back. It's worth noting here
- 34:16he kind of took my away, my keen line. I'd like to come
- 34:19back and say gee wiz, but Bob Bailey I did it better than I
- 34:24could. This script was reused. John Dawson is actually e Jack Newman.
- 34:32I don't know why he took that non diplum for the radio job, but
- 34:37he was the writer of the script and it was adapted from an episode he
- 34:43wrote of Richard Diamond from May thirtieth, nineteen fifty two. The Carpenter Case.
- 34:49Just a great way to start off this series. And I love the
- 34:58twist at the at the end and kind of you know, the whole drama
- 35:02at the McCormick house and how Johnny was a little a little bit off but
- 35:09then he got it right the second time and leading to a very dramatic and
- 35:16powerful confrontation with the adjuster. And this that's just a great standard, a
- 35:23good solid cast of character actors, including the great Virginia Greig, and I
- 35:30think we've had fifty seven more weeks of this. This is just phenomenal.
- 35:36We now do turn to listener comments and feedbacks, and we just have one
- 35:39from Charles who says, I'm a big fan great entertainment always with the right
- 35:45moral values. Well, thanks so much, and you know, I definitely
- 35:49think in this episode this is one where Bob Bailey just stood out as absolute
- 35:55as Johnny Doller just now absolutely incorrupt, all which makes for a great story.
- 36:04All right, Well, we will see you back here on Saturday with
- 36:07the lineup, and we'll be back on Monday with yours truly Johnny Dowler.
