- 0:15Speaker 3: some free gas. $ 200 now, so jackpot is going up.
- 0:18Speaker 3: All right, if you have a secret, it's time to confess.
- 0:20Speaker 4: 833-787-1029.
- 0:23Speaker 1: No matter what that secret is, just get it off
- 0:26Speaker 1: your chest and you have one. What is going on?
- 0:29Speaker 1: All right.
- 0:29Speaker 4: Well, here's my confession, and honestly, I am struggling with it. Okay.
- 0:35Speaker 4: I am a high school teacher, and I'm 28 years old.
- 0:39Speaker 4: A few weeks ago, I was out with some friends
- 0:42Speaker 4: when I ran into a former student of mine. And
- 0:45Speaker 4: she's 23 now, and she's been out of school for
- 0:48Speaker 4: several years. So I said hello and asked her what
- 0:52Speaker 4: she's been up to. And I figured that'd be the
- 0:55Speaker 4: end of it. But she kept talking to me all
- 0:57Speaker 4: night and we ended up catching up about her life
- 1:00Speaker 4: and her career and everything she's been doing since graduation.
- 1:03Speaker 4: Before we left, she gave me her number and later
- 1:07Speaker 4: sent me friend requests on all my social media accounts.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Okay, so this is a former student that you see
- 1:15Speaker 3: out and about. You end up talking to her, doing whatever,
- 1:18Speaker 3: and she gets your number.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Yeah. Weird vibe. Now, where does this go from here?
- 1:25Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly. Okay, since then, we've been texting pretty regularly,
- 1:32Speaker 4: and here's where I'm conflicted. We're only five years apart
- 1:36Speaker 4: in age. And if we had met today and there
- 1:39Speaker 4: was no teacher-student history, I don't think anyone would think
- 1:43Speaker 4: twice about it. She's an adult. She has a career,
- 1:45Speaker 4: her own place, and her own life. And it's not
- 1:47Speaker 4: like I'm breaking any laws or school policies because she's
- 1:50Speaker 4: no longer a student, but I can't shake the fact
- 1:53Speaker 4: That I used to be her teacher. Yeah.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true. I get that.
- 1:57Speaker 3: That is a factor. I don't, I mean, to me,
- 2:00Speaker 3: the age is like, whatever. I mean, I get it
- 2:03Speaker 3: because you're a young teacher. I mean, there are young teachers.
- 2:05Speaker 1: I guess.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Very young.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Not every teacher I had when I was a kid
- 2:09Speaker 1: was old.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Oh, a hundred percent. Maybe one gym teacher was young
- 2:13Speaker 2: and that was it.
- 2:13Speaker 4: Right. I mean, nothing inappropriate ever happened. I just want
- 2:18Speaker 4: to be clear. Nothing inappropriate ever happened when she was
- 2:22Speaker 4: in school. I never looked at her that way, and
- 2:24Speaker 4: I certainly never imagined I'd be sitting here years later
- 2:27Speaker 4: wondering if I should ask her out. It's just the
- 2:30Speaker 4: hardest part is I don't really feel comfortable asking my coworkers.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Most of my friends are educators, too, and I'm worried
- 2:39Speaker 4: they'll immediately judge me without hearing the whole story.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Of course they will.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I think they're the best people to ask.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I'm sure this has happened before, but
- 2:49Speaker 3: I don't know. Candace, does it seem icky to you?
- 2:52Speaker 2: It's a little icky, but it's only icky if you
- 2:54Speaker 2: make it icky. You know what I mean? Like, you're
- 2:57Speaker 2: both adults. She's how old?
- 2:59Speaker 4: 23? Yeah, yeah. And it's just the phrase former student
- 3:04Speaker 4: sounds bad. Yes. Like, in reality, we're two adults. Two
- 3:09Speaker 4: just happen to be close in age. Part of me
- 3:11Speaker 4: thinks I should avoid the situation because it looks so bad,
- 3:13Speaker 4: but the other part just keeps wondering... if I'd be
- 3:16Speaker 4: walking away from something that could actually be great.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I don't want to deny anybody true love.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Right. I mean, any other 23 and 28 year old
- 3:24Speaker 2: would just date, you know?
- 3:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:26Speaker 1: But it's not, but that's not the situation.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Just don't tell everybody that she's a former student. Am
- 3:32Speaker 1: I the only one that feels weird about this? I
- 3:34Speaker 1: can't believe it. I feel slightly weird. Former student. This
- 3:38Speaker 1: is someone, you were their teacher.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:42Speaker 3: If you set the precedent right now, like, I don't know.
- 3:45Speaker 3: I just would, I couldn't do it. I just don't
- 3:47Speaker 3: think I could do it. I don't want to deny
- 3:49Speaker 3: anybody from love. You're not, you haven't done anything wrong.
- 3:52Speaker 1: You're right. You're only 28. She's 23, whatever.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess it's different because she was in high school.
- 3:58Speaker 2: It's not like she was a baby. You know what
- 4:00Speaker 2: I mean?
- 4:01Speaker 3: To me, it would be different if she was in college.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Then I feel like, well, no, that's still weird.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I can see where it's weird. But in reality,
- 4:10Speaker 2: there's nothing wrong with it.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Okay. Yeah, I don't think anything's wrong with it.
- 4:14Speaker 4: All right.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Well, then, you know what, dater? Start dating seniors.
- 4:17Speaker 4: No.
- 4:17Speaker 3: No.
- 4:18Speaker 1: You remember a while back, I tried to hit on
- 4:21Speaker 1: my former teacher. Remember? Back in the day. You did?
- 4:24Speaker 1: How are any of them still alive?
- 4:26Speaker 4: I'm not that old.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I saw my former history teacher and I was like, hey,
- 4:31Speaker 1: what's up? What was her name? She shot me down.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Miss Colbert. Oh, yeah. That's right. She's married.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Oh, of course.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Why would you hit on a married woman? I didn't
- 4:41Speaker 1: know that back then. You know what I'm saying? I'm
- 4:43Speaker 1: just like, hey.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I know.
- 4:45Speaker 1: But we're talking decades after you were in school. Oh,
- 4:47Speaker 1: my God.
- 4:49Speaker 3: I mean, we're talking about four scores and seven years ago.
- 4:53Speaker 2: And this would also be more weird if she had
- 4:55Speaker 2: just graduated.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:57Speaker 1: She did. She's 23. She's 23. She's five years different.
- 4:59Speaker 1: She's been out of high school for five or six years.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Five years is nothing.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I got underwear five years old.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Well, you didn't get no underwear.
- 5:05Speaker 3: I got underwear her age. OK, listen, technically, you're not
- 5:12Speaker 3: the world's worst person. If you do this, I'm just
- 5:15Speaker 3: saying personally, I couldn't do it.
- 5:17Speaker 1: But I'm not saying you should.
- 5:19Speaker 3: I just couldn't do it because the optics just don't
- 5:21Speaker 3: feel right to me, especially if I'm if I wasn't
- 5:23Speaker 3: a teacher anymore.
- 5:24Speaker 1: I'm not even a teacher anymore. Yeah, but I'm still
- 5:27Speaker 1: a teacher.
- 5:27Speaker 3: So if I'm still a teacher, I'm setting the precedent
- 5:30Speaker 3: that I will date a former student.
- 5:32Speaker 1: That's weird to me.
- 5:34Speaker 2: I mean, you have to decide if you're comfortable with it.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Yeah, you decide that. Figure it out. Let us know
- 5:38Speaker 1: what you do.
- 5:39Speaker 3: But it sounds like if you've been texting back and forth,
- 5:41Speaker 3: I mean, the line's already been. I'm not saying you've
- 5:44Speaker 3: crossed the line. I'm not even saying there's a line
- 5:45Speaker 3: to cross, but you've already kind of went there. So
- 5:47Speaker 3: I think it's going to happen. Hmm.
- 5:49Speaker 4: Okay.
- 5:50Speaker 3: You feel like, you feel like you're going to ask
- 5:51Speaker 3: her on, you're going to go out with her and
- 5:53Speaker 3: maybe something will happen.
- 5:54Speaker 4: Oh man.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Yeah. We'll see. Let us know what happens and good luck.
- 5:59Speaker 3: And I'm not saying you're, I don't want to make
- 6:01Speaker 3: it sound like you're, you know, some kind of predator
- 6:04Speaker 3: or creep. I don't think that I just, it's not
- 6:06Speaker 3: my thing, but good luck in whatever you do.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Okay.
- 6:08Speaker 4: Alrighty. Thank you.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Candace acts like this happens every day.
- 6:12Speaker 2: No, I'm just saying. It could be weirder.
- 6:14Speaker 1: You didn't date a teacher, did you?
- 6:16Speaker 4: No.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Well, I gotta ask.
- 6:18Speaker 3: What? No.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Well, who's trying to date teachers over here? Yeah, but
- 6:21Speaker 1: I was reckless back then. Would you still date her? Oh, yeah. Ms.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Colburn?
- 6:25Speaker 1: Well, you're still reckless then.
