night. Mike, how you doing, man, I'm doing great. Thanks
1:41
for having me on. First of all, I just wanted some of my
1:44
condolences out or my you know. My thoughts are with friend Doug scaff a
1:48
horrible accident while picking up campaign signs down in Boone County. I have texted
1:53
back and forth with him this morning and he seems to be in good spirits,
1:56
and I think he's gonna be fine, but he's gonna have to be
1:59
laid up a little bit. Had a little bit of a problem when he
2:00
was taking signs down, and Dougs contacted us this morning as well and wanted
2:07
for folks to be aware that that he knows that there's still signs out there
2:09
and that he will pull them down. That this isn't like anything option or
2:13
everything. Just to be patient with him because he's not doing so well right
2:15
now. But he's going to be okay, I think, as it was
2:16
multiple snake bites, yeah, copperhead bights, copper heads on both legs.
2:21
Yeah, yeah, so that's not good, Dougs. Dougs seems like he's
2:23
going to be okay. Yeah, we do have a statement from him this
2:25
morning. But if you happen to see one of his signs, feel free
2:28
to take it down, he said, or he's going to be coming around
2:30
and doing that himself. Awesome. Be careful when you're out there picking up
2:34
those signs or out there in general, there's you know, be aware of
2:38
your surroundings. A lot of poisonous snakes out there. It's pretty crazy because
2:40
when I was a kid, there there was a lot of Copperhead sightings,
2:43
and I think that maybe we've lost a little bit of resolution of that because
2:46
we don't se him as much anymore. When I was a kid, that
2:47
was a thing that we looked out for quite a bit. I used to
2:50
see them all the time. Yeah, me too, Me too. Have
2:52
grown up, so man, I know, Uh, election is election is
2:55
over? Of course, Uh, maybe not a lot of surprises. And
3:00
West Virginia in general, maybe if you hear and there, depending on where
3:01
you're at in your localities and stuff. What's your takeaway from a perspective the
3:06
Democratic Party, Well, first of all, I think overall, as we
3:08
expected, the turnout was a lot slower than usual. I think that can
3:15
be attributed to the fact that both of the at the top of the ticket
3:19
on both sides the presidential election was we know who the nominees were going to
3:23
be, so there was not a contested presidential primary on either ballot. And
3:28
also, I think we should mention all the negative campaigning, mainly on the
3:32
Republican side, almost entirely on the Republican side, does drive down voter turnout.
3:38
It does suppress votes when people are just inundated with negativity and just a
3:43
ridiculous commercials non stop. They are not the least bit substantive, just attacking
3:50
the other people for the craziest things. That does drive down turnout. So
3:54
yeah, as we expected turnout was low. We also expected there would be
3:59
a lot more of the Independence would be would be picking up Republican ballots because
4:02
that's where all the money was being spent on advertising. Of course, they
4:05
had more primary elections on their side, so you'd say there was more action
4:11
on that side, although we had some very important primaries on our side as
4:14
well, so it's no surprise that more Republican ballots were picked up by Independence.
4:19
How we feel a lot of those folks were going in there to vote
4:23
against somebody, not necessarily vote for somebody, to vote against somebody, and
4:26
we feel a lot of those independences will be voting for Democrats in the fall.
4:30
I know that. That's I've heard that, and there was a lot
4:32
of a lot of the negativity draws things like that, though that will cause
4:35
somebody to get a ballot to vote against somebody, because and the crazy thing
4:40
is, it's not necessarily that the ads work on what they're talking about.
4:44
People will get mad at the ad and then vote against the person that put
4:46
out the ad that the gain. It does happen like that from time to
4:49
time. Yes, it's just it's crazy to think about it from that way.
4:54
So as far as the Democrats going forward on what you're looking at now,
4:57
as far as as we go into November for the general election, Uh,
5:00
where are you looking to make progress at in West Virginia? Where do
5:03
you think your strengths could be or where do you think that you might be
5:05
able to make some great Well, our strengths are in the caliber of candidates
5:10
that we have, especially with our statewide ticket. We feel that our candidates
5:15
are actually more qualified to do the job that they're seeking. Starting with Governor,
5:21
I'm Mayor Steele, are getting ahead of myself. Mayor Steve Williams from
5:27
Huntington, the only three term mayor. Of course you're there's a term limit
5:30
for mayor in Huntington. He's done his three terms. He's the only mayor
5:34
in Huntington history to ever uh, to ever serve three terms. And he's
5:40
done so because he's done a good job. People over there like him because
5:43
of the job that he's doing, and they've kept re electing him. And
5:46
remember when he when he became mayor the first time, Huntington was in a
5:49
financial crisis, and he has really turned that city around. And uh,
5:55
you know, they're now called what the City of Solutions because of the way
5:59
that they've addressed the op void crisis and h and other issues that affect many
6:02
of our population centers. Steve's done a great job and he's got a great
6:05
story to tell, and I think he's he's more qualified than the Republican nominee
6:13
that that won. And I remember too, I've noticed all the I mean,
6:16
I look at all the money that's being spent on the Republican side and
6:19
between the independent expenditures and the campaign itself that you know, millions of dollars
6:26
spent boosting Patrick Morsey, but they never could get him above what thirty two
6:30
or thirty three percent, about a third of the vote. And I realized
6:33
it's a crowded primary. But still he's got a ceiling. And uh,
6:38
I've got I've got a very good, very good feeling about about Steve Williams,
6:43
and I think he's going to work very hard and uh, and I
6:46
think he will make a better governor and we'll see in the fall. Now
6:51
down we also we had a contested primary for US Senate, and first of
6:58
all, I want to thank Zach Shrewsbury community organizer, and he had a
7:04
big campaign staff and all the people, the volunteers and staffers on his campaign
7:09
did a great job of energizing the voters all over this state. He did
7:15
a great job and he should be proud of himself and congratulate him on a
7:18
well run campaign. Mayor Glen Elliott, another mayor from the city of Wheeling,
7:25
we wound up being the nominee for our party for US Senate. He
7:29
also has a great story to tell and he's done a great job and as
7:31
a two term mayor in the city of Wheeling, it's also done a lot
7:35
for economic development in that part of the state. And also when he was
7:41
I think right out of law school. I believe he was an intern for
7:43
Senator Birds, So he knows how things work in the Senate and he knows
7:46
that the only way he can do that is to reach across the aisle and
7:49
compromise and work with everybody. And I think he's going to make a great,
7:54
great US Senator. We have up and down the ballot that we have
7:58
candidates that are just morequalified to do the job for Attorney General. Teresa Torseevo
8:03
won our primary. Uh. If you were going into into a courtroom and
8:07
you needed a good lawyer, Uh, that's what you're gonna call. Not
8:09
the folks who are running on the other side. Teresa has tons of courtroom
8:13
experience. She has represented first responders. She's represented police officers and firefighters across
8:20
the state and fights to make sure that they get their benefits and their pensions.
8:24
She is She's represented some of the young cadets at the at the State
8:28
Police Academy that are having that are that are not suing the State Police Academy.
8:33
Now she's represented down here in Charleston, I believe for a girls basketball
8:39
teams. Came down here and took up for a girls basketball team that was
8:41
being shut out of being able to play in like the the All Star League.
8:46
She's just done a has more courtroom experience than than anybody that's running quite
8:50
some time. And not to mention, she will be the first female attorney
8:54
general in the state. In the auditors race, this might sound crazy,
9:01
We're actually running an actual auditor Mariannklater has twenty years of experience as an auditor.
9:07
She actually knows how to do the job. And quite frankly, she's
9:11
running against a career politician who's probably been on every ballot in most of my
9:18
lifetime, and we have a candidate actually knows knows how to do the job
9:22
and knows what the job is. So I like her chances. I could
9:28
go on, well, what do you think. I wanted to look at
9:31
the Senate and the governor's race for a moment, because you mentioned with Williams
9:35
and Elliott, two quality candidates that you're putting forward. The uphill battle,
9:39
of course, is you're going for a state wide office against folks that have
9:43
held state wide office, and so your battle is name recognition on that.
9:46
How do you approach that as far as getting the word out there, nobody,
9:50
we all know it's going to be an uphill battle. We know what
9:52
the climate is for Democrats in this state. It's going to be a huge
9:54
uphill battle. But I like that we're leading our ticket with mayors who've actually
9:58
had, you know, been They've made budgets, they've they've balanced budgets for
10:03
their cities. They have dealt with real issues. I mean, it doesn't
10:05
get any more closer to home than the work of a mayor. You can
10:09
ask our mayor here, Amy Goodwin, the amount of work that goes into
10:13
that, and that's the work that actually affects the day to day lives of
10:16
citizens. Uh So, I like that we're leading with our mayors and they
10:20
have records to stand on, and they're in They're very impressive records. They
10:26
have something to run on, that's for sure. Taking a look at the
10:28
other side for just a moment seems a little unusual to me. And I'm
10:31
as as not of an expert is possible in these matters, but it seems
10:35
to me a little odd that once again we lose the Senate president on on
10:39
the other side of the asl for the Republic. It was incredibly I would
10:43
that was the biggest surprise of the night, because first of all, it
10:46
was a three way primary, which would normally favor the incumbent, especially the
10:50
incumbent who most likely I'm pretty sure it has the largest war chest of any
10:56
of any member of the legislature, and he has that and he had that
11:01
war chest because it's been no secret the like pay to play type stuff that's
11:09
been going on in the state legislature lately. If you want to get something
11:13
in front of the Republican caucus in the Senate, we've been told lobbyists have
11:16
to pony up about ten thousand dollars to get in front of the Senate caucus.
11:22
That's how it's been since Senator Blair has been Senate President. So you
11:26
would think with that amount of grift going on that he would have had a
11:28
big enough war chest to fend off not one, but two primary opponents.
11:33
But apparently, I guess people are just tired of that kind of politics and
11:37
he lost. That's interesting. There's a general there's still an anti it's not
11:43
anti established and anti incumbency. It seems like a vane that's running through the
11:48
state. In a lot of ways, incumbents aren't always safe, you're notwithstanding,
11:52
of course, I don't take anything for granted, but no, I
11:56
think people are tired with the way things are being done. And I've been
12:01
on here before talking about it, but you know it, really it bothers
12:05
me that we have this this sort of like pay to play scheme going on
12:09
in our state Senate. So only those who can afford to pony up are
12:16
able to have their side heard in front of the Republican Caucus. You know,
12:20
it's like, we represent people in our district, most vast majority of
12:24
them can't come up with ten thousand dollars, and we're supposed to be giving
12:26
them equal representation too. So that kind of stuff really really ticks me off.
12:31
So I didn't shed a whole lot of tears over Senate President Blair,
12:35
although it'll be interesting to see in the dynamics in the Senate, and I
12:37
think a lot of it has to do with the whoever will be appointed,
12:41
you know, of course to Justice Trump once he's sworn, it'll be Justice
12:46
Trump. Charlie Trump will have to resign at some point, somebody will be
12:50
appointed to that district. And of course if Mark Hunt is able to you
12:54
know, we'll see what happens with the with the auditors race, but somebody
12:58
could be appointed there. But there's a lot that's going to age the dynamics.
13:01
But now there were some very interesting races and that was probably the biggest
13:07
surprise though. So as we look forward in coming up one another year,
13:11
of course, this is an election year, so getting anything done from a
13:13
policy standpoint, I don't know how those things will go about. We're still
13:16
in waiting to see if there's going to be some kind of special session in
13:20
West Virginia as far as finding ways to find any and I know that you
13:26
work very hard in doing that, and many Democratic representatives do o Kaylle Young
13:30
tries to do a good job too, finding trying to find some common grounds
13:33
somewhere to work on to get positive things that help the people of West Virginia
13:37
through what's our outlook on that? In the you say it helped people of
13:41
West Virginia. At very least, we shouldn't be harming them. And right
13:43
now there are a whole lot of people in the state that have this cloud
13:46
of uncertainty over their lives, mainly a lot of it with the pulling the
13:52
funds from the IBB Waiver program. So families and loved ones of people who
13:58
have intellectual and developmental disabilities are just in a state of panic right now,
14:01
and they shouldn't be. That's something we should have left alone. Instead,
14:05
we're waiting to find out if there's a special session, so at the very
14:09
least, the very least to put that money back in into the Medicaid funding
14:13
so they're able to continue to get you know, direct care workers into their
14:18
homes to help them take care to people who need a little extra help.
14:22
So I'm hoping that we have that special session in order to do that.
14:26
I'm not exactly sure when I know, we do have interims scheduled just for
14:28
Monday and Tuesday, just two days of interims, so there is some time
14:33
blocked, you know, around lunchtime, but that's not out of the ordinary
14:37
for them to have no meetings scheduled around lunchtime. There could be a special
14:41
session in there. But we're talking about you know, Monday and Tuesday next
14:45
week and we've not heard anything yet. So hopefully there, you know,
14:48
the negotiations are going on and we can figure out what will be on the
14:52
call and at the very least to restore the money to the IDD waiver program.
14:56
Now, of course, Mayor Williams running for governor and the Democratic nominee
15:03
for governor has been very vocal and persistent in calling for the current governor to
15:07
put reproductive freedom on the ballot, to put on the call a resolution that
15:13
will have a constitutional amendment to protect reproductive freedom and that would allow the voters
15:18
of West Virginia to decide for themselves, just like in many other states where
15:22
it's been on the ballot, and in every other state, whether it's a
15:26
red and it's always actually it's been in red states where it's been on the
15:28
ballot, the voters have been on the side of freedom and they've decided to
15:33
protect that right that women have had in this country for over fifty years.
15:37
So I do support that. Two quick things. One in observation about the
15:43
reproductive freedom going on the ballot. The one thing, regardless of where you
15:46
stand on this, the one thing that I find kind of funny is you
15:48
hear people that talk about at some point in time about letting the people decide,
15:54
and then it seems like that when you start talking about letting the people
15:58
decide, it's like, well, i'm your elected represent that if you elect
16:00
me to make those decisions for you, it's got to be one or the
16:03
other, either the people decide. I mean, you can't play it both
16:06
ways. If you want to throw that out there all the time when it
16:07
comes to making choices about things, using that as a place to retreat to
16:11
when you don't want to actually take a position is kind of weak sauce,
16:15
you know, on an issue this important that affects, you know, so
16:18
many lives, especially the lives of young women in this state. I think
16:22
it's important enough that we let the people decide on this issue, and if
16:27
people are against it, well, then they can go out and vote against
16:30
it, I think. But I don't know what the Republicans are so afraid
16:33
of. And if they feel that this is the will of the people that
16:36
they've upheld by this complete and total abortion band that they passed in West Virginia,
16:40
if they feel that that's the will of people, then let's put it
16:42
to a test and then put it to a vote. Just about ninety seconds
16:45
left. I just briefly because we touched on it just a moment ago and
16:48
in talking about with the waivers and things like that. But as an older
16:52
dad, as with a six year old kid, I'm concerned about the state
16:57
of children in general in it state, whether it be in the foster situations
17:03
that we have, whether it be in other sorts of homes, and even
17:04
in our classrooms. We've seen results from from school choice that have depleted county
17:11
funds. I don't think there's any question that you can that you can point
17:14
to some of these things that are happening. I worry about public education.
17:18
I worry about where I'm going to end up end up with my kid.
17:19
We've been homeschooling up to a point, but we can't. We we're not
17:22
equipped to homeschool past first or second grade or something. You know. We
17:26
need we need educators to help us with that, and I share your concern.
17:30
It really needs to be more of a priority to improve the lot for
17:34
public education in this state, and something that we haven't been we need to
17:38
get. We have only a few seconds left. We need to mention.
17:41
We also need to fix the childcare crisis in this state. That's a workforce
17:45
issue. That is the industry that supports every other industry, so young parents
17:51
are able to get to work, and there's just a lack of options when
17:53
it comes to childcare. And that's because the reimbursement rates are based on attendance
17:59
rather than in roll. We need to base it on enrollment so these places
18:03
are able to stay in business. Every week, it seems like we're losing
18:06
another childcare provider and many, many folks in the state don't have access to
18:12
it, and they're unable to get back to work, and that's something else
18:15
that we need to put on the special session call. It's delicate. Mike
18:18
Pushkin from Conall County. Thanks so much for your time, Mike and your
18:21
evaluation what's been going on. We appreciate you coming on the law grabbing me
18:23

22:00
with Charlie West Barbecue Fest, which is coming up, and I can't wait
22:07
to talk about some barbecue this morning. Sam, good morning. How you
22:10
doing this morning? I'm going great, Dale, how are you doing.
22:12
I'm doing very very well. Looking forward to talking about the Charlie West Barbecue
22:17
Fest, which is an annual event in Charleston. It benefits the Bob Burdett
22:19
Center, which provides after school programs for local families. Attendees can purchase barbecue
22:25
from different vendors and sample competition. I'll let you get into the details of
22:29
this thing because it's a great event that's been going on for some time now.
22:32
Thank you. It really is. This is our seventh year that we've
22:34
been doing that. We took a break during COVID, of course, but
22:37
this is our seventh year and it's a little bit different this year in terms
22:41
of location. Usually we have it down in the Boulevard, and obviously because
22:45
of the USA Championship bicycle races, that's not going to happen this year.
22:49
But we've worked with the city and we're going to be at City Center at
22:52
Slack Plaza this year. Oh great, And so it's going to be on
22:56
Saturday from two to seven pm at City Center. So that's just right downtown
23:02
Charleston, between between Summer Street and the mall. You can you can get
23:06
there very easily. I walk by there just about every day I go through
23:08
there. It's a great location, got plenty of room, easily accessible.
23:11
They're seating and everything by. There's a there's a stage that's up. There's
23:15
gonna be a good time. It is. I think it's going to be
23:18
neat. We're really excited with a number of people that that are going to
23:22
be downtown, just a lot of activities we're going to be Actually, if
23:26
you know the transit mall is there in terms of the bus that that's going
23:29
to be close or we're going to be out on that street. There'll be
23:30
p room for people to move around. We will have live music from the
23:34
stage. We have three different groups that will be playing during the day.
23:38
So that's that's going to be really neat. We'll be announcing our sponsors from
23:41
the stage as well. But uh, it's it's always a great event benefiting
23:47
our after school program on on the West Side to Bob or Dead Center.
23:49
What are some of the competitions and categories that people are going to experience.
23:52
Well, thanks that there are basically three different categories that we have commercial folks
23:59
that you know have have either food trucks or have permanent restaurants. They'll be
24:03
coming down participating. We have our competition folks, and they are ones who
24:07
do this on a regular basis. And then we have our backyard competition and
24:12
these are guys who like to that's your smoke pit guys, guys back there
24:17
that do it themselves exactly. They're doing themselves and it's always a lot of
24:21
fun talking with people and just talking about what they're fixing, how they do
24:25
it, and just having it's a great time. What's incredible to me when
24:29
you talk about people about barbecue, and no matter what area you subscribe to,
24:33
I guess if you're like in the Carolinas or Texas or Saint Louis or
24:34
whatever it might be, Man, these folks are like scientists when you talk
24:38
to them, man, I mean they have like the formulas they use and
24:41
the way that they cook their meat and the timing they use and stuff like
24:45
that. It's fascinating to learn about it is and they have their secret recipes
24:48
too, just like you you know so, but but you know, they'll
24:52
be competing in different categories obviously best barbecue, best sauce, best ribs,
24:57
and then the backyard folks have a wild card category in which they fix whatever
25:03
they want and the judges look at that and evaluate that as well. And
25:07
we've really had some interesting ones. We've had smoked duck casadillas in the past.
25:12
We had smoke quale eggs one year, which was really good. It
25:17
was really interesting. So they're really creative and come up with a lot of
25:21
great food. Really, I wonder if you can barbecue squirrel. It seems
25:23
like something you could do that definitely would be a West Virginia or an Appalachian
25:30
barbecue in private. A way to put that together. Tell us a little
25:33
bit about the barber Deet Center. Tell us about what it does, how
25:37
it helps benefit the West Side. Well, thanks, we you know,
25:40
actually, Barbardet Center, we're in our twenty fifth year providing yes, and
25:44
it's amazing and time really flies by, but we're in our twenty fifth year
25:47
providing after school program services on the West Side. We served roughly one hundred
25:52
and seventy five students a day, elementary school students and it's free for their
25:56
parents and they come there every day after school. We have three different locations.
26:02
But the children come to they come there and immediately as soon as they
26:04
get there, we serve them a meal, so you know, they go
26:07
home of a needning having having a full meal, and then we also give
26:12
them a snack prior to the time that they leave. But we have different
26:15
events or activities. Obviously, homework is key. We have certified teachers and
26:22
tutors that work with them on working with them on on homework. We also
26:27
have obviously different physical activities. We have dance, we have team sports,
26:33
and then uh, just all kinds of different activities to help our families and
26:38
their students. What a great benefit to the community it is. It's really
26:42
an awesome program. Uh we've served I don't know, I mean, it's
26:47
amazing the number of students that we've served over the years, and uh,
26:51
really it's it's a way to really help students thrive. We also have summer
26:56
programming so students can come in the summer they keep those skills up. Obviously,
27:00
we focus on a lot of things that will help them later on life.
27:03
We believe not just educational skills, academic skills, but life skills as
27:08
well. Oh that's great, I mean that's what our youth needs and that
27:11
those types of programs and outlets is exactly what we need. So this is
27:15
such a great cause to get involved with. It is and I want to
27:18
really give credit to our staff as well, because I mean, it's it's
27:22
easy. We can you know, you can put kids in front of a
27:25
laptop or a computer and you can do that, but are we have a
27:27
staff that are really that are really vested in this program and they really care
27:32
about our students. And that means a lot for a child coming in knowing
27:34
that they're carrid about that there's consistency, the same people are going to be
27:37
there and and love them every day, and that that is wonderful. Is
27:41
there is it from the past, either from something from the center or something
27:45
from the barbecue event in the past, from the Charlie West Barbecue Fest.
27:48
Is there a standout moment or something that that you kind of always think back
27:52
to when you think about the event. Well, I do think the first
27:56
one we had, which was was on Magic Island, and it's not what
28:02
I would call a standout, but it was great. It was great weather
28:04
on Friday night while we're setting up, but then Saturday the weather came in.
28:07
It was forty degrees and the raining and the wind was blowing. But
28:12
it worked out. We had great sponsors, and we continue to have great
28:15
sponsors, and we we kept on going and so now we're in our seventh
28:22
year. As I said earlier, it's amazing how that works out. In
28:25
the radio business, of course, promotion is what we do. And so
28:27
sometimes you know, you plan for months to show up at a location to
28:30
have a big shind shin dig that you're getting ready to do, and then
28:34
that one day there's a thunderstorm, right, there's rain or something like that
28:37
happens, and it's amazing. It's almost like a Michael Jordan playing with the
28:41
flu or something. It's like, despite the challenges, a lot of times
28:44
you end up just having an amazing event. You get through the other side
28:47
of it, it ends up being really really good. And sometimes that that's
28:49
like a team building thing. It is, and I think, you know,
28:52
you ask about things that stand out. I think the thing for me
28:56
that stands out is it's a staff. It's a chance for supporters of the
29:00
Bobber Desk Center to work together, obviously for a great cause, but then
29:04
just the people you get to meet and talk with and talk about barbecue or
29:08
just things in general, and working with them. It's fun. The one
29:12
great thing about events like this in Charleston, of course, when you run
29:15
into people. Charleston's not a very big town. You always run into people
29:19
you know or people you know that you know, and then suddenly, before
29:22
you know it, you have you know, two or three people standing around,
29:23
you have something in common, and you know, conversation breaks out.
29:26
It happens almost every single time. It seems like when somebody comes up and
29:30
you start talking. When you go to one of these events, it's just
29:32
a good place to go. So that's going to be the Charlie West Barbecue
29:34
Fest that's going to be in downtown Charleston this year. It's going to be
29:38
at Slack Plaza two to seven on Saturday. I remind folks that parking building
29:41
right across from Slack Pause on Saturday is free. You have to go up
29:45
to like the third level I think is where the free parking starts. But
29:48
it's all free all the way up. So if you need somewhere to park,
29:49
there's there. There's the street parking, all kinds of places you can
29:52
get to there from downtown Charleston. Be aware of the bike race. Of
29:56
course, it's going through some of the boulevard and stuff is closed off.
29:59
You want to be aware of that. It's still plenty of access a great
30:00
location in downtown Charleston for the Charlie West Barbecue Fest this year. It's gonna
30:04
be a good time, I think so do. I really appreciate you,

34:24
things that are going on in Charleston right now and in the immediate future,
34:30
during the summer and everything else. How's the how's the bike tour going right
34:34
now? The bike the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships. I've done some
34:39
research on that this week, and this thing is incredible. Yeah, it's
34:43
it's an amazing event. We've got two days in the books. We've got
34:45
four days still to go. We crowned two, we actually crowned multiple national
34:52
champions in the last two days, including two elite riders have qualified for the
34:59
Paris ALM bigs here in Charleston, West Virginia. The men's Elite and women's
35:02
Elite time trial winners yesterday were automatic qualifiers for the US Olympic team. And
35:08
you know, that's historic both, you know, in the sense of cycling,
35:13
but it's it's historic for Charleston. We had two Olympians selected and qualifying
35:17
here in Charleston, West Virginia yesterday. That's that's big, that's super cool.
35:21
I encourage anyone that's maybe making your way out to the boulevard. You
35:23
want to watch these uh uh these uh did they call them bikers? Racers,
35:28
cyclists, cyclists? Athletes is a good word. Yeah, Athletes are
35:30
good too. If you want to watch them and be familiar with some stuff,
35:34
you can go to the website for the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships.
35:37
It's easy to find. It's a great website. They have all the
35:39
resources you could possibly need on there, including a rule book and uh and
35:44
history of records and different things like that. I've been looking through that this
35:46
week. The terminology is a little challenging. You have to kind of get
35:50
used to them. Maybe if you're more used to to cycle cycling and racing
35:53
and stuff. Maybe you know some of that stuff. I'm not so a
35:55
lot of it. I was learning when the go. But you learn some
35:58
of the terminology. You can see some of the giants of the sport,
36:00
so to speak, when you go and look at some of the records and
36:02
some of the time records and stuff, and then you get yourself situating.
36:06
You can watch it like a fan. And I've got a new vocabulary word
36:07
for everyone for today and tomorrow, and that is Criterion, or as the
36:12
cyclists refer to it, krit crit and tonight and tomorrow night is the crit
36:16
in downtown Charleston. That is a tight one mile loop that circles the inner
36:22
part of the city. Everything starts and finishes at the four points by Sheraton
36:27
there at the Levy Stage. Tonight, they'll travel west up Canaw Boulevard,
36:32
They'll turn up Court Street to Lee Street, Lee Street to Summers Summers down
36:37
past City Center at Slock Plaza to Charier Street, where they'll turn left and
36:40
go to Hale Street and then right back down to the boulevard. And they
36:45
will lap that as a pack as fast as possible, over and over again
36:49
for about forty five minutes tonight, and that's going to be super exciting.
36:52
There's multiple heats tonight, multiple heats Tomorrow night racing starts at six point thirty.
36:57
Places to be tonight will be at City Center. It'slock Plaza because we'll
37:00
have a DJ. We've got the new Poda District here in Charleston, so
37:04
you can get a beer and walk around and watch. But you also might
37:07
want to post up on a corner, and I suggest the corners of Lee
37:09
and Summers right there by them two brothers, the corner of Summers and Courier
37:14
by Black Sheet Burrito, or I think the really fun one is going to
37:17
be the corner of Courier Street and Hale Street. They're at Art Emporium and
37:22
the Purple Moon, that sort of area right there, because that's going to
37:24
be a really hard right turn onto a very narrow Hail Street and there's the
37:30
possibility for a lot of let's just say action right there at that corner.
37:32
So those are some great places to watch. Always the start finish line is
37:36
a great place to post up as well. But those are my tips for
37:39
tonight. It all happens after six point thirty tonight. It's going to be
37:43
a ton of fun. Those are great tips because that is part of the
37:45
draw of this is that when you start talking about racing through city street,
37:49
just like in auto racing or anything else, the city becomes part of the
37:52
feature. That's right. The city is a player in this right, the
37:54
city is a character in this movie. And you know, the feedback we've
37:58
gotten from USA Cycling is that, you know, first of all, city
38:01
administration and kudos and all thanks to Mayor Goodwin and her staff, the city
38:07
administration, all of the city departments have been super easy for them to work
38:09
with. But they love the streets here. They love the layout. It's
38:13
flat, it's a lot of perpendicular streets and well paved streets. There's been
38:17
really little to no work that's needed to be done for these guys to race.
38:21
So tonight's going to be super exciting. That's fantastic, and so I
38:23
encourage you to check that out. I think it's a really neat thing that
38:27
we're doing here. So you can check out the races. Who's still going
38:30
to be going to one for the next few days and get to see some
38:32
more of this action as it occurs in real time. Yeah, right,
38:36
Saturday and Sunday are going to be fun as well. Those are the road
38:38
courses. The road races rather thirteen miles through the city of Charleston, Bridge
38:42
Road, Loudon Heights where it's Oak Ridge, Greenbriar. You know, a
38:45
couple of really great climbs winding through the city streets, flat shots down the
38:50
boulevard, a lot of speed, a lot of agility, a lot of
38:52
strength and climbing. So all of the skill sets of these riders will be
38:58
on display this weekend. Like me, and like when you used to watch
39:01
ESPN or something, you would see a West Virginia tourism ad or something come
39:05
on. It would make you a little excited or proud of the state or
39:07
something like that. When I went to the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championship
39:10
website, they speak very highly of like in setting up the situation, they
39:15
speak very highly of Charleston. It's just as somebody, you know, we're
39:17
like that in West Virginia. We want to kind of watch what people say
39:21
about us. They're write up was very nice. And yesterday there was a
39:23
great woman, a great moment, the woman who won the women's leade,
39:28
who qualified for the Paris Olympics. In her post race interview, she talked
39:30
about how inviting the city had been, how great it had been to be
39:36
here, how the great experience that she's had as an athlete visiting Charleston.
39:39
And you talk about tourism commercials, this is a six day long tourism commercial
39:43
for Charleston and in a larger sense, the state of West Virginia. Yeah,
39:46
I absolutely love it. As a long time resident of Charleston who came
39:51
back, I just love what the city has done in the last ten or
39:53
twelve years. It's been pretty amazing. Let's talk about some other stuff that's
39:55
going on, a lot of big announcements recently Live on the Levee, the
40:00
the acts were announced recently Regatta. I think you and Dave has already talk
40:01
about Regatt a little bit, but still giant Regatta yet again for the city
40:06
of Charleston this year. A lot of good things coming up. Yeah,
40:08
certainly we're all turning our attention to those things. You've got Live on the
40:12
Levee, which you'll kick off and I can't I won't speak at length about
40:15
the entire schedule, but I can tell you the one night that I'm really
40:19
looking forward to is the John Ingram's a Tribute night. Talking Heads Man,
40:24
I'm pumped for that. You've got us so good too, man, John
40:28
Za pro. All of the guys that he brings in are pros. If
40:30
you're a Talking Heads fan or just a music fan, that's going to be
40:32
a great night. We've got festival coming up, ten days of art throughout
40:37
the city of Charleston. Obviously you talk about Regatta. You know, everybody's
40:43
talking about the acts on the main stage, nobody, not enough people are
40:47
talking about the incredible wrestling action at Slack Plaza. For the second year of
40:52
the Stern Wheel, slambourree bigger and better than years past, and this year
40:55
sponsored by Gino's Pizza. So we're looking forward to great professional wrestling and oh,
41:00
by the way, some music up on the main stage. That's absolutely
41:04
true. And now I have to give a shout out to my friend Adam
41:06
Harris and the folks that helped with the slamboury down there. I went and
41:08
watched it last year, and I was expecting good quality because I know the
41:14
level of expectation that Adam and those guys have. What I didn't expect is
41:16
what I saw and especially the final match that they had down there. You're
41:20
talking hogh flying, fantastic quality when it comes to sports entertainment, professional wrestling,
41:24
what everybody outstanding. I mean, this isn't like some rinking ding thing
41:29
where you got people up there. I don't know what they're doing. These
41:30
are professional athletes doing very very well. It's a labor of love. The
41:34
guys that are involved. And you mentioned Adam Harris, and you talk about
41:37
Bishop Baylor and Matt Sutton and a whole bunch of other guys that are involved
41:40
in that. And you know, started planning Stern Will Slambury twenty twenty four
41:45
right after last year's ended, and we're going to piggyback off of this year's
41:50
market mayhem that happened a couple of months ago up at Capital Market. But
41:53
it's a lot of fun, it's family friendly, it's a great time.
41:58
If you saw the Perry Bennett photo of the Sternwheel Slambery from on top of
42:01
the City Garage on Summer Street last year, I mean we estimate probably seven
42:06
to eight thousand people and in Slack Plaza for that professional wrestling spectacle last year,
42:12
and we're looking forward to revisiting that and making it bigger and better this
42:15
year. What I love about all of these things is how we incorporate localities
42:19
and names into the names of the like the WrestleMania type events, but we
42:22
marry it into our locality and some way all love all that stuff. Yeah,
42:24
that's right, Slambury, you know, slam Market, Stern Reel,
42:30
Slamboury Market, Mayhem, slam Plaza. My dream is one day to do
42:35
Bash at the ballpark over at Gomart Ballpark in partnership with the Charleston Dirty Birds.
42:38
So that's my long term vision and dream and we're going to work to
42:42
make it happen. But it all you know, continues at Sternwheel, Slambourrey
42:46
twenty twenty four throughout there as well. That we actually have a professional wrestling
42:51
show that we air over on oursis station, Charlestons Sports Radio one of six
42:55
point seven and fourteen ninety called The Grill Out. It airs every Monday at
42:59
one o'clock over there, and they'll be do some coverage of the Slack of
43:02
the Slack lambree So we'll get some interviews and things like that over there,
43:06
so we'll be able to promote that a little bit that's all. That's awesome.
43:08
It's all about long term storytelling for us, and we'll see if Bishop
43:12
Baylor can retain that belt. I absolutely love it. That is that's fantastic.
43:15
Also coming up, Chef Paul's getting ready to start his his his Let's
43:20
get cooking events at the Capitol Market again. That's coming up James Beard finalists,
43:24
who is also providing the food for our VIP hospitality at Steptoe Plaza during
43:30
the cycling road races on Saturday and Sunday. You know, Chef Paul is
43:34
a he's a he's a Charleston treasurer, he's a West Virginia treasurer. He's
43:37
he's just such a great guy to work with and you know, great for
43:40
him. And in what city in America do you have the opportunity to go
43:45
to your your indoor outdoor farmers market slash agritourism destination and see a James Beard
43:52
finalist chef teaching you how to cook and it's sponsored by AARP. We can't
43:57
forget them, gayleien Miller and the fine folks there. But you know,
44:00
we have a James Beard chef teaching us how to cook in our own backyard.
44:02
I mean, come on this, Charleston, the summer is just it's
44:06
amazing, an amazing coupe. Chef fall is such a great advocate of appal
44:09
Asian cuisine and cooking and an advocate for West Virginia. And I love that.
44:15
I want to say we have him on our our state wide show hotline
44:19
every Monday afternoon. And I love when he talks about going somewhere to give
44:23
out of state where he gives presentations, cooking talks. He'll cook for somebody.
44:28
Just recently he went out to Napa Valle cooked them ramps in California.
44:31
He took he took West Virginia rams with He's like, I want to show
44:34
these folks all about the ramps. That's awesome. I mean, they're they're
44:37
they're. I mean that is about as great as an ambassador that you could
44:39
have for the state. Just hey, West Virginia is not all this stuff
44:43
that people have have powdered on us over the years. Look at what we
44:45
do here, the beautiful food that we make and different things like that.
44:49
I really like that. And I got to give a lot of credit to
44:51
to our Commissioner of Tourism, Our Tourism Secretary rather Chelsea Ruby. She created
44:55
a chef Ambassador program and there are several chefs involved, but Chef Paul is
45:00
one of those because she recognized as we all recognize that, you know,
45:02
culturally, food is a big part of the West Virginia story and people will
45:07
travel for food. And Paul going to NAPA and doing that now that that
45:12
for a lot of folks. That puts West Virginia on the radar and now
45:14
we become one of their you know, one of their destinations that they want
45:17
to visit. So you know, Paul's is a great guy, great ambassador,
45:21
and you know, and he's a friend and I appreciate that about him
45:24
as well. Yeah, it's all good stuff that's coming up here in Charleston.
45:28
The chef Paul does a great job as well. Anything else you wanted
45:30
to remind us of before we can cut you loose, you know, I'll
45:32
just say this. You know, we've got four days of great cycling left.
45:35
The city of Charleston has been a wonderful host thus far, and you
45:37
know, I would just continue to say we've worked really hard to minimize any
45:42
impacts from from road closures and detours, build a few extra minutes of time
45:47
into your travel in the next few days. Be patient with us because we're
45:51
doing great things in Charleston and it takes this entire community to make it happen.
45:54

49:37
with a couple of responses, We've had during the show today. From the
49:38
three zero four four to three seven Dave, I'm an independent voter. I
49:42
will be voting for Mayor Williams for governor. Too many overdose deaths under Morrissey.
49:46
From the non zero four seven one six. Blair is out in large
49:51
part due to his heavy push to bob pass legislative rules and pushed through legislation
49:55
without public input or debate. Let's see surrogate. I guess that's me.
50:00
I'm with delicate Pushkin one on Mayor Williams and Glenn Elliott. They earned my
50:06
vote in the primary and are excellent candidates, but comparing either of their memorial
50:10
successes to Amy Goodwin is a losing angle. She appointed and covered things up
50:15
for a line corrupt police chief of police. They have not and shouldn't be
50:20
mentioned in the same breath. Okay, let's see from the three zero four
50:23
three eight nine. And that's the issue. Our representatives don't represent us.
50:28
They get in their office and represent their party, not the people. Ballot
50:30
initiatives help the people fine tune their democracy. Let's see dell Pushkin is fear
50:38
mongering with the DHHR budget cut law. That program has never run out of
50:43
money. The budget continues to be cut because they are overfunded every year by
50:46
tens of millions. The cuts are to the overfunding, not to any services
50:52
or the payments to those services. Needs. Senator to par debunked those laws
50:55
from Pushkin on talk line more than a month ago. I think for that
51:00
text and let's see from the three zero, four, five, four to
51:02
five, could someone please explain why the Dave Allen Show is not on ninety
51:07
six five it should be, so I'll go and double check that. Certainly
51:12
ninety six five, one, four, five and five adwchs the three signals
51:15
that you should be able to get the Dave Allen Show on, So if
51:19
there's an issue there, I'm going to go and check that out. My
51:22
apologies as far as that goes. I wanted to give you a heads up
51:25
too. Of course, Carl Lee does a show on our station now.

51:32
It's also available on podcast, and his most recent episode is going to
51:37
be published today and he's mightily proud of it, and I just wanted to
51:40
let you know what it's going to be about Carl has On one of his
51:44
long time inspirations and that is a coach Swain. He is, that's coach
51:52
Lawrence Scott Swain. He was born in Gary, West Virginia. Coach Swayne
51:55
was made history as the first African American quarterback Gary High School. A standout
51:59
athlete, he earned his football scholarship to West Virginia State University, where he
52:01
graduated with a degree in elementary education and social studies. Coach Waine's career spans
52:07
over four decades from Charleston area schools Woodrow Wilson Junior High to the Westside Middle

School and Capitol High School and of course where he is now. So Coach

Wayne is going to be part of the car League podcast that's going to be
