Latest / Inside Country with Wayne D / Chris Young is Tired of the Waiting Game
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Bit a minute since we got to hang out with
- 0:02Speaker 1: this guy. And by the way, last time you were
- 0:04Speaker 1: showing off a awesome World Series ring, it's Chris Young
- 0:08Speaker 1: is in the house. Dude.
- 0:09Speaker 2: I forgot.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I was that. Is that retired for a little bit?
- 0:13Speaker 1: Where is it at? Uh?
- 0:14Speaker 2: No, no, no, let's not retired. I just I wore
- 0:20Speaker 2: that for for you.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Oh.
- 0:22Speaker 2: I was like, I know your sports guys, Okay, cool,
- 0:25Speaker 2: I'll rock that today and do something kind of cool.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Sorry I'm boring. I'm just wearing a cool watch today.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Listen. I appreciate you coming. Obviously, you're a busy guy.
- 0:36Speaker 1: We were just talking a second ago. Uh. And I
- 0:39Speaker 1: know this has been a topic you talk about a
- 0:41Speaker 1: million times. I want to touch base. Uh. There's so
- 0:44Speaker 1: many artists with bars, right, Why did it make sense?
- 0:49Speaker 1: Because I'm not gonna ask why, because because while they
- 0:52Speaker 1: are not, that sounds fun. Why was this the right
- 0:54Speaker 1: time and how did everything line up for you?
- 0:57Speaker 2: I just found the right space. I didn't want something
- 1:00Speaker 2: that was crazy, big, multi story. I wanted to do
- 1:03Speaker 2: a sports bar. I wanted to do something that you know,
- 1:07Speaker 2: doesn't necessarily lean towards the part of my life that
- 1:12Speaker 2: is the majority of it, which is music. I wanted
- 1:15Speaker 2: to do something a little bit different. So I finally
- 1:18Speaker 2: found a spot. It's ninety four person cap and I
- 1:23Speaker 2: was like, Yeah, this is this is it, this is
- 1:25Speaker 2: what I've been looking for. So we put a lot
- 1:27Speaker 2: of effort into that, a lot of effort into the kitchen.
- 1:31Speaker 2: My chefs are absolutely incredible. I feel like it's sort
- 1:34Speaker 2: of a slap in the face to them to call
- 1:36Speaker 2: it elevated bar food because it's so nice. Like we
- 1:40Speaker 2: did a taste test of everything and I was just like, man,
- 1:42Speaker 2: this is insane. But it's going to be a lot
- 1:47Speaker 2: of fun to have that place open. And you know,
- 1:49Speaker 2: we've got a bunch of stuff that we've hung up
- 1:51Speaker 2: on the walls, whether it's sports memorabilia all the way
- 1:55Speaker 2: to you know, plaques of mind for music to stuff
- 2:00Speaker 2: from friends of mine that they've given and been like,
- 2:03Speaker 2: hey man, hang this up. Let it have a spot.
- 2:06Speaker 2: So it's going to be a different vibe and something
- 2:10Speaker 2: that I've been wanting to do for a long time
- 2:13Speaker 2: and just timed out perfectly.
- 2:15Speaker 1: And I was going to ask that too, because there's
- 2:17Speaker 1: a lot of artists h and not just in Nashville,
- 2:19Speaker 1: but around the country that you know, a company goes, hey,
- 2:22Speaker 1: I'll open a bar for you, and they're like, okay, sweet,
- 2:25Speaker 1: and then they're like, here's a bunch of stuff that
- 2:27Speaker 1: I wore at one point hanging on the walls. How
- 2:30Speaker 1: how were you How involved were you in the process
- 2:34Speaker 1: of like, hey, here's how I want this to look,
- 2:36Speaker 1: Here's how I want this to feel. I mean, were
- 2:38Speaker 1: you like looking at paint schemes of wallpaper or did
- 2:41Speaker 1: you trust somebody else with that.
- 2:42Speaker 2: I may or may not have been in there, you know,
- 2:45Speaker 2: helping install some of the stuff. Oh yeah, I was
- 2:48Speaker 2: very hands on with it, and you know, very dedicated
- 2:52Speaker 2: to the point where you know, in one of the
- 2:58Speaker 2: bathrooms there may or may not be a photo of
- 3:00Speaker 2: my dog in black and white h framed taking a poop,
- 3:08Speaker 2: you know, because how eloquent, how classy, okay good, I
- 3:15Speaker 2: don't know how that would go over and a labs
- 3:17Speaker 2: to be fair.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Uh, you you're talking on the decor of the building,
- 3:22Speaker 1: like it's more Chris Young the person versus Chris Young
- 3:26Speaker 1: the artist. Right, it's more you're personal.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, So you know I've got one of the
- 3:33Speaker 2: plaques that's in there is a Lee Brice plaque, but
- 3:37Speaker 2: it's the one that was presented to my buddy john Stone,
- 3:39Speaker 2: who wrote the song that Lee cut, and all of
- 3:42Speaker 2: us know each other. So being able to have personal
- 3:44Speaker 2: touches like that, I think are are a lot of fun.
- 3:48Speaker 2: You know, it's going to be a cowboys bar. Sorry
- 3:52Speaker 2: Eagles fans's cry, so let's push some Eagles fans as
- 3:58Speaker 2: far out as we can. It's definitely going to be
- 4:03Speaker 2: a place where everybody just kind of sort of come
- 4:05Speaker 2: hang out. Like one of the things that I mentioned
- 4:07Speaker 2: to somebody and they were like, oh, I've never thought
- 4:08Speaker 2: about that before, is we're going to have a lot
- 4:13Speaker 2: of the football like soccer matches on early in the
- 4:18Speaker 2: morning because a lot of people come to Nashville from
- 4:21Speaker 2: the UK because they want to be here and they
- 4:23Speaker 2: love country music, and they don't have any place to
- 4:26Speaker 2: go to really watch those games because no one's playing them.
- 4:30Speaker 2: So that's something we're going to try and not necessarily
- 4:34Speaker 2: specialize in, but sort of cater to.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Yeah, that's really cool. Are you Is that your anytime
- 4:40Speaker 1: we've caught up we talk about your podcast to a
- 4:43Speaker 1: certain degree, is that somewhere where you hope that like
- 4:46Speaker 1: even your podcast can can come to life a little
- 4:48Speaker 1: bit more.
- 4:49Speaker 2: I sort of put that to the side when I
- 4:51Speaker 2: started doing this. I haven't like the podcast has been
- 4:54Speaker 2: on hiatus sort of indefinitely because between that touring, the
- 5:01Speaker 2: new label, being with you know, Black River, and putting
- 5:05Speaker 2: out a new album and then now putting out a
- 5:06Speaker 2: deluxe on the fifteenth, you know, there's there's been a
- 5:11Speaker 2: lot going on. So I've sort of had to pick
- 5:13Speaker 2: and choose, like, Okay, you can only do so much
- 5:19Speaker 2: if you want it to be really well done. So
- 5:23Speaker 2: I've sort of I'm not saying I wouldn't ever revitalize that,
- 5:28Speaker 2: but it definitely is a place that will be used
- 5:31Speaker 2: for multiple different things. Hopefully we're throwing some number one
- 5:35Speaker 2: parties in there, for I didn't come here to leave.
- 5:38Speaker 1: The last thing I want to ask that is not
- 5:40Speaker 1: music career related, is last time you're in here. I
- 5:44Speaker 1: love talking fantasy football with you. Who And we'll clip
- 5:49Speaker 1: this so we can use it close to the season.
- 5:51Speaker 1: So if they are healthy, who, give me like, who
- 5:55Speaker 1: would be one of your top picks this year? Not
- 5:58Speaker 1: just one? Like give me a couple in the that
- 6:00Speaker 1: you're like, hey, here's or a sleeper. You're like, hey,
- 6:02Speaker 1: this is my ace and the whole guy.
- 6:05Speaker 2: I oh man, it's it's too early. This is right, Like,
- 6:13Speaker 2: I don't ever do my draft until the week before
- 6:17Speaker 2: the season kicks because it never fails, someone gets hurt
- 6:22Speaker 2: that you have like on your roster, of like, this
- 6:25Speaker 2: is the guy that I'm going to pick, this is
- 6:27Speaker 2: my sleeper pick. And I'm not kidding. It never fails.
- 6:31Speaker 2: I'll have at least one person go down before week
- 6:35Speaker 2: one kicks off. So I'll tell you right now, I
- 6:39Speaker 2: will gladly come back on and hang with you and
- 6:43Speaker 2: talk about that all right when we're closer to the season.
- 6:46Speaker 2: But yeah, it's just going to be interesting to see
- 6:50Speaker 2: how some of the running back situations sort of scale out.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Yeah, because it looks like those teams gave up on running.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Well yeah, and then some are gonna have to give in,
- 7:04Speaker 2: you know. I mean you look at the Ravens. They've
- 7:07Speaker 2: always notoriously been a run heavy offense, whether it's Lamar
- 7:13Speaker 2: or Derrick Henry or somebody else that's you know, been
- 7:18Speaker 2: picked up and is sort of their their third option.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Like they've they've always sort of leaned into that. But
- 7:23Speaker 2: I wonder if they're gonna make him more stationary and
- 7:26Speaker 2: less mobile this year's and they're just trying not to
- 7:29Speaker 2: telegraph it. So the little things like that, as you
- 7:33Speaker 2: get closer to the season, you can sort of like
- 7:35Speaker 2: pick up on those.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Listen, we'll dive in once we get close to fall,
- 7:38Speaker 1: once that Chris breeze hits the air here in Nashville. Yeah,
- 7:42Speaker 1: we're far away from that, but yeah, we got we
- 7:44Speaker 1: got some humidity to swim through. Coming up here always
- 7:47Speaker 1: during zay Fast Week isn't that great?
- 7:50Speaker 2: It never fails.
- 7:50Speaker 1: And it's funny because it literally feels, like I said
- 7:54Speaker 1: the other day, I'm like, if your name is Noah
- 7:55Speaker 1: Star building a narc because the rain's coming. Oh yeah,
- 7:58Speaker 1: that's how it's felt. CMA Fest. It looks like, you know,
- 8:02Speaker 1: the weather's going to open up here. We'll talk about
- 8:05Speaker 1: CMA Fest first here. Is that something that you look
- 8:08Speaker 1: forward to because it's really like you're busy, Like it's
- 8:12Speaker 1: even though it's h home and you likely will sleep
- 8:14Speaker 1: in your own bed whenever you get there, whenever you
- 8:18Speaker 1: get done.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it is something I definitely look forward to, and
- 8:23Speaker 2: you know, growing up here obviously being from Murphy Store,
- 8:26Speaker 2: at Tennessee. One of the things that I used to
- 8:30Speaker 2: do was go to it when it was called Fanfare
- 8:33Speaker 2: back in the day at the Fairgrounds. And I've got great,
- 8:38Speaker 2: great memories from that as a kid and being a
- 8:41Speaker 2: country music fan. So as it changed and evolved over time,
- 8:47Speaker 2: of course, is it still really really awesome. Yeah, especially
- 8:54Speaker 2: if you live country music. There's just so much to see,
- 8:56Speaker 2: so much to do. You can't get to everything because
- 9:00Speaker 2: there's so many people doing so many different things, and
- 9:04Speaker 2: you know this is gonna be the last year that
- 9:06Speaker 2: it's at this stadium, the old.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Stum.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Good lord.
- 9:14Speaker 1: What what country music fans don't realize too is as
- 9:18Speaker 1: much as this is work and you're gonna be shaking
- 9:20Speaker 1: hands and kissing babies, making stress.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Don't say backwards, don't shake babies.
- 9:26Speaker 1: I heard that shortened career. But this is also an
- 9:30Speaker 1: opportunity for you to catch up with with friends in
- 9:34Speaker 1: the industry, right Like, as much as you can.
- 9:36Speaker 2: People camera are laughing really hard, right now, go ahead.
- 9:40Speaker 1: People don't realize this is a shot for you to
- 9:42Speaker 1: catch up with some friends in the industry as well.
- 9:44Speaker 1: You could be super close with another artist, but like
- 9:48Speaker 1: you only see them at stuff like this, Who are
- 9:50Speaker 1: some people that you hope, like, Hey, I haven't seen
- 9:52Speaker 1: so and so in a while, it'd be nice to
- 9:53Speaker 1: run into them. See.
- 9:54Speaker 2: I actually feel like this week specifically is less of that.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Oh okay, mainly because all of us are like in
- 10:02Speaker 2: different places trying to do different things at the same time. Yeah,
- 10:06Speaker 2: and so like, even if you run into somebody, it's
- 10:08Speaker 2: like you're backstage at an event, You're like, oh, hey, man,
- 10:12Speaker 2: can see you. Dap them up and then move on.
- 10:18Speaker 2: I feel like you get that more at award shows
- 10:21Speaker 2: because you get a lot of downtime after, like you know,
- 10:24Speaker 2: walking carpets and stuff. But yeah, I still feel like
- 10:29Speaker 2: you get to catch up with people. Most of my
- 10:33Speaker 2: friends like I annoy the crap out of them anyway,
- 10:36Speaker 2: So it's like, you know, KB Mitchell Tenpenny, like people
- 10:43Speaker 2: like that that I'm real close with, Like I annoyed
- 10:47Speaker 2: them enough.
- 10:48Speaker 1: So you were you just brought up. Obviously, we're getting
- 10:53Speaker 1: ready to celebrate the deluxe edition of the album. As
- 10:56Speaker 1: an artist, the deluxe edition thing used to be sporadic,
- 11:00Speaker 1: didn't happen a ton. Now it feels pretty regular for
- 11:04Speaker 1: that to happen for an album. Especially in country music
- 11:07Speaker 1: as an artist. Is that a cool experience for you
- 11:11Speaker 1: because it's almost like the original songs get to get
- 11:14Speaker 1: to have a second life, but like, also, here's you know,
- 11:17Speaker 1: another version or here's some new songs.
- 11:19Speaker 2: That I mean, for me, I love the timing at
- 11:24Speaker 2: least in this particular instance for me, because I'm going
- 11:28Speaker 2: with I didn't come here to leave as the new single.
- 11:30Speaker 2: It's the title track of the record. Plus now I
- 11:32Speaker 2: get to give people, you know, a duet with Breelin
- 11:36Speaker 2: do it with Shalin and another new song that one
- 11:39Speaker 2: of my really close friends wrote. So I feel like
- 11:43Speaker 2: it gives it a little bit of a new life
- 11:45Speaker 2: at the same time that you know, we're dropping a
- 11:49Speaker 2: new single and then you know, you can have multiple
- 11:53Speaker 2: songs work at the same time now, So it's kind
- 11:55Speaker 2: of cool to have some new stuff to give to,
- 11:59Speaker 2: you know, fans of your music and and people that
- 12:02Speaker 2: are just excited to hear something different that maybe if
- 12:05Speaker 2: they've gone through like the track listing or if they haven't,
- 12:09Speaker 2: they'll find that stuff there.
- 12:12Speaker 1: You have a certain glow about you, As you mentioned
- 12:16Speaker 1: the single is does this song mean more to you
- 12:19Speaker 1: than others? Is are you more proud of this song
- 12:21Speaker 1: than maybe some others on the album that you're not
- 12:23Speaker 1: proud of you. Yeah, I was gonna say, he's there's
- 12:26Speaker 1: some real shit on there, but there's some.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Now I'm definitely really proud of this song. It's funny
- 12:37Speaker 2: because I started saying this, and I'm sort of like,
- 12:42Speaker 2: you know, kept it as as like a trademark of
- 12:45Speaker 2: when I talk about the song, you know, it is
- 12:49Speaker 2: the album title, but also you know, this song sounds
- 12:52Speaker 2: like you wrote it at nine pm, and we wrote
- 12:55Speaker 2: this at nine am. And it was because the previous
- 12:58Speaker 2: night I was out and I was getting ready to
- 12:59Speaker 2: go home at like six o'clock in Dallas. Davidson, who's
- 13:03Speaker 2: one of the writers on it with our buddy Kyle Fishman,
- 13:09Speaker 2: he was standing next to me and I'm like, I'm
- 13:13Speaker 2: gonna head out. Man, traffic's dying down, because you know,
- 13:16Speaker 2: everybody loves Nashville traffic. And he goes, do you know
- 13:23Speaker 2: one more? And I was like, yeah, I mean I
- 13:28Speaker 2: could have one more. I'm not driving. I took an
- 13:32Speaker 2: uber down here from my house and he is I
- 13:35Speaker 2: was like, do you want one more? He goes, well,
- 13:36Speaker 2: I didn't come here to leave and I was like,
- 13:39Speaker 2: I'm sorry, what now say that one more time? He goes,
- 13:44Speaker 2: I didn't come here to leave, and I was like, Dallas,
- 13:47Speaker 2: have you ever written that before? And he's like no.
- 13:50Speaker 2: I was like, can we write tomorrow? And he's like,
- 13:54Speaker 2: I've gotten eleven am, but I could do nine am.
- 13:56Speaker 2: So you know, we got up super early, wrote that
- 13:59Speaker 2: song in maybe forty five minutes, and like Kyle did
- 14:04Speaker 2: a quick demo track and I sang the vocal that
- 14:07Speaker 2: morning and was out of there.
- 14:08Speaker 1: It's funny because even as you say that, it's like, Wow,
- 14:12Speaker 1: that sounds like a great song and like a good
- 14:14Speaker 1: story to tell in his song? Is there? Is there
- 14:19Speaker 1: a song you have, whether it's on this deluxe or
- 14:21Speaker 1: something that's been out that you're like, I'm floored this
- 14:24Speaker 1: hasn't been out there before like this, How with how
- 14:27Speaker 1: easy it came out, how easy the ideas flowed, the
- 14:30Speaker 1: song wrote itself like there, How the hell was this
- 14:33Speaker 1: not done before?
- 14:34Speaker 2: You know, Honestly, the song that I did with Shalan,
- 14:39Speaker 2: like the hook being that makes one of us. I
- 14:43Speaker 2: don't know how many times I've said that around friends.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Usually as a smart ass, right, yeah, trying to.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Be Yeah, that makes one of us and then for
- 14:53Speaker 2: us to turn it into you know, a truly in
- 15:00Speaker 2: absolated breakup song, because I don't care what anybody says.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Ninety nine percent of the time if you go through
- 15:06Speaker 2: a breakup, I don't care. If both of you are
- 15:09Speaker 2: saying you're good, one of the people is not. And
- 15:13Speaker 2: so being able to take that and sort of twist
- 15:18Speaker 2: it around that title I thought was a really cool thing.
- 15:21Speaker 1: I mean, it's a great idea. Do you so we'll
- 15:23Speaker 1: get the deluxe edition. You're going to be busy on
- 15:26Speaker 1: the road the bars opening. We'll leave a space there
- 15:31Speaker 1: to edit the date. Maybe I may know by the
- 15:36Speaker 1: time I walk out of here, so but you should
- 15:39Speaker 1: leave your phone out in case you get it up there, right,
- 15:42Speaker 1: what are other things this year that you're like, Man,
- 15:44Speaker 1: I'm so fortunate that this is on my calendar this
- 15:47Speaker 1: year and I know all of it, right, Like this touring,
- 15:49Speaker 1: like that's all stuff you enjoy and don't take for granted.
- 15:53Speaker 1: But what's what are other things that you're like that
- 15:55Speaker 1: we as fans might not think that you're like excited
- 15:58Speaker 1: about the rest of the year.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Oh man, you know, just it sounds very very boring,
- 16:10Speaker 2: but being busy. A lot of the time, you'll look
- 16:14Speaker 2: at your schedule and you'll be like, ugh, I wish
- 16:17Speaker 2: you didn't have to do anything. I didn't want to,
- 16:20Speaker 2: you know, get up at six am this morning, he's
- 16:24Speaker 2: start doing interviews. But it's what I had to do.
- 16:28Speaker 2: And it's been really amazing because I get to talk
- 16:32Speaker 2: about this music that I'm so excited about and the
- 16:35Speaker 2: album that I'm excited about and touring, and you know,
- 16:39Speaker 2: not everybody gets to do that, So you got to
- 16:42Speaker 2: sort of look at things through the lens of I'm
- 16:46Speaker 2: going to enjoy this. I'm gonna celebrate every single minute
- 16:49Speaker 2: that I get. That's a cool thing because there's a
- 16:53Speaker 2: lot of people that you know, I just played a
- 16:55Speaker 2: rodeo at Globelife in Arlington and Texas and it was amazing.
- 17:04Speaker 2: I was just like, not everybody gets to do this,
- 17:08Speaker 2: sitting here in an arena with a whole bunch of
- 17:09Speaker 2: people and playing country music and they know the songs.
- 17:13Speaker 2: So yeah, just celebrating little moments.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Last thing I want to ask is you mentioned celebrating
- 17:20Speaker 1: number one and number one parties right well, had that
- 17:25Speaker 1: country radio has a special relationship with country music fans.
- 17:28Speaker 1: I think more so than any than any other format
- 17:32Speaker 1: of music. When it comes to your relationship with country radio,
- 17:37Speaker 1: what is that Because they're streaming, there's social media, there's
- 17:41Speaker 1: all these different When you started, all those things didn't exist.
- 17:44Speaker 1: It was radio. But now what does radio mean to
- 17:47Speaker 1: you as far as your success in your career and
- 17:49Speaker 1: that connection that you can still have with fans discovering
- 17:52Speaker 1: new music.
- 17:53Speaker 2: I don't like how you made me sound old there.
- 17:56Speaker 2: I don't like.
- 17:57Speaker 1: I'm not old, I said experienced. Although I would say
- 18:01Speaker 1: the info seat leads with his near twenty year.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Career, well, it's not near anymore.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Unfortunately, his thirty five years.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Oh my god, No, don't do that.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Don't do that to me.
- 18:14Speaker 2: No, No, it's uh, it's very interesting to me. You know,
- 18:24Speaker 2: the music industry is constantly evolving, like it's constantly changing,
- 18:28Speaker 2: you know. I mean you look at any conversation right now.
- 18:30Speaker 2: People are worried about, you know, how do we adapt
- 18:34Speaker 2: and integrate with AI And it's like a dirty word
- 18:37Speaker 2: to some people. And then some people are like, no,
- 18:39Speaker 2: this is amazing. It's going to unlock all these avenues
- 18:42Speaker 2: for us. And it's the same thing, you know, going
- 18:47Speaker 2: back to before I had a record deal, when LimeWire exist.
- 18:51Speaker 2: So I think it's it's a constant evolution, and I
- 18:55Speaker 2: think the one thing that we've always retained is at
- 19:00Speaker 2: least to me, I can't speak for anybody else, and
- 19:03Speaker 2: you never put words in anybody else's mouth. But with
- 19:07Speaker 2: country music, it has always been my love because of
- 19:13Speaker 2: the love people showed to it. You know, you got
- 19:15Speaker 2: people that have been fans of artists for you know,
- 19:20Speaker 2: four decades, and I just think that while you sometimes
- 19:25Speaker 2: see that in other genres, it is extremely, extremely true
- 19:31Speaker 2: to people that are fans of country and I just
- 19:35Speaker 2: think that's something really special that we need to hold
- 19:37Speaker 2: on to. So it doesn't matter what the changes are,
- 19:40Speaker 2: It doesn't matter how things evolve, you know, keep putting
- 19:43Speaker 2: out good music, people keep showing up.
- 19:45Speaker 1: That's awesome, man, christ Young, appreciate it. Man. Thanks
