- 0:07Hour number two, Millery Condon, welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:10Network, Trent Condon, Ken Miller to the top of the hour
- 0:15talking sports with you. Lucas and Sean in the afternoon
- 0:19coming up here today. Still to come this hour, Alec
- 0:22Bussey from cyclonealert.com talks Iowa State, but Matt
- 0:26Snyder kicks off Monday 2nd hour I and his normal spot talk in
- 0:29Major League Baseball. Love to have you on Matt Snyder,
- 0:32good to talk to you. How are you?
- 0:34I'm very good. Good to talk to you guys.
- 0:36I have figured out the next manager to be fired in baseball
- 0:40and it's a big name. And this big name Skippers club
- 0:44has gone 3 and 14 in their last 17.
- 0:48And I think they hired the heir apparent last week and it's a
- 0:51former manager is now on staff and his name is Freddy Gonzalez.
- 0:55And I think Brian Snicker's days are numbered in Atlanta.
- 0:58Crazy. No, not crazy.
- 1:01I The only thing is they've they've made it clear like this
- 1:05year's a swan song. He's retiring at the end of the
- 1:07year. It's supposed to be goodbye.
- 1:10And they won. He won the World Series in 2021.
- 1:15It's tough because I do think that there are a lot of people
- 1:18who would support the move of a big portion of the fan base
- 1:20would support the move. You know how bases are when
- 1:23somebody, when you smell chum in the water, you got to fire
- 1:26somebody. That's the only way it will make
- 1:27people happy. I just wonder if they want to
- 1:30avoid that situation. And honestly, as weird as it
- 1:34sounds right now on June 9th to declare the Braves out of it 14
- 1:40games out in the in the NL E, that's done 9 1/2 out of the
- 1:45last National League wild card and five teams in between them
- 1:49in the last wild card spot. So it almost feels like it's a
- 1:54lost season right now. So what's the point in firing
- 1:57him? But after those circumstances, I
- 2:00would say I agree. And right when you said and I
- 2:03figured out the next manager to be fired immediately Brian
- 2:05Center came into my head. So I so it's not crazy at all.
- 2:09Same went through my head as soon as Ken started mentioning
- 2:11that another team that's going through struggles and it
- 2:14continues three in a row. Burns officially shut down as
- 2:18the Arizona Diamondbacks fair even though they're ahead of the
- 2:20Braves in the standings. Can we put a red pen out and put
- 2:23a red line through them? I think we can start watching it
- 2:26pretty closely, yeah. I mean, six out in the in the
- 2:29wild card, but again, three teams to jump over.
- 2:31So it's not like. You know, I always think.
- 2:34A couple of years ago when the the Braves were like 10 games
- 2:37behind the Mets going into June and then they ran them down and
- 2:39they won the divisional. First of all, they played at a
- 2:41ridiculous pace the rest of year.
- 2:43Second of all, there was nobody in between them.
- 2:45It's a lot easier and it's not easy.
- 2:47It's just easier to run teams down when there's nobody in
- 2:49between. When you're talking about
- 2:51leapfrogging four teams and making up that many games, the
- 2:55that gets tough there. Like you need a lot of teams to
- 2:58start losing and some teams are going to win.
- 3:01And the interesting thing about the Diamondbacks to me is,
- 3:04especially with Burns going down, as you said, gallons been
- 3:07bad until last start. Maybe he figured something out,
- 3:10but they could be sellers in front of the trade deadline and
- 3:14reload because Katel Marte and Corbin Carroll are around for
- 3:19the long term. And those are two guys you can
- 3:20build around. So it's not like they're going
- 3:22to tank. But free agent at the end of the
- 3:24year, a Eugenio Suarez, Lourdes Guriel, Junior, Zach Gallon,
- 3:28Josh Naylor, Meryl Kelly, that looks like a team who could make
- 3:32a pretty good have a pretty good return if they sell.
- 3:36And they could look for guys in the upper levels of the minors.
- 3:38They were going to just sell this year and try to win next
- 3:42year. Almost similar to the way the
- 3:43Yankees did all the way back in 2016, remember?
- 3:46Or is it like Beltron or Roll the Chapman?
- 3:48They they sold a bunch of the deadline but it was to reload
- 3:50and not necessarily rebuild. Excellent point.
- 3:54I want to talk about what I thought was going into it was
- 3:56going to be very telling series and that was the Cubs and the
- 3:58Tigers in Detroit. And to Detroit's fans credit,
- 4:02they sold out Comerica every single game, standing room only.
- 4:05We had scuba going against Brent Brown or Brown rather.
- 4:09And I thought Brown was terrific in the game.
- 4:11Scuba was, you know, his normal self.
- 4:14What did you learn in that series, other than the fact that
- 4:17Derek Thomas, the home plate umpire yesterday, is over his
- 4:19head? And he's an Iowan.
- 4:21And he's an Iowan Cedar Rapids Kennedy guy.
- 4:24What did what did you learn in that series about those two
- 4:27teams, if anything? Not a ton, you know, it's you
- 4:31know, you go into the series and you see school pitching for the
- 4:34Tigers and you think, OK, they're going to win two and
- 4:36three because they're going to automatically win the school
- 4:38game. And then the seas will probably
- 4:39split the other two. And that's how it went on the
- 4:42Cubs end. Imanaga is not back yet.
- 4:44Matthew Boyd didn't pitch. Those are probably their one and
- 4:47two right now. All the tie on great on
- 4:49Saturday. That's clearly their top three.
- 4:52And really Friday couple inches right, Like, you know, the the
- 4:57late stop sign with peace at third base that kind of messed
- 5:01up the Cubs mojo that inning. And then the carry Carpenter
- 5:04robbery of stay at Suzuki, which which could have been a three
- 5:06run home run or even a multi run double.
- 5:09And then the Tigers win that 131.
- 5:11That's one of those where it's yes, the Tigers deserve to win
- 5:13and it's a well earned victory and a well played game.
- 5:16But it's one of those that you say, well, that's a toss up that
- 5:18could have gone either way. And that's what was the
- 5:20difference in the the Tigers taking two of three.
- 5:22It tells me they're just two teams that are very good and are
- 5:25very closely matched. Can.
- 5:27I ask you about that. And if you want to say the
- 5:29Tigers are better right now, yeah, that's fine too.
- 5:32I think they're very evenly matched.
- 5:34I agree with you, Kyle Tucker. Can we are we overrating what he
- 5:39means to this team? His bats been ice cold as of
- 5:42late. I know he's great in a batter's
- 5:43box and you won. But I'm I'm so sick of hearing
- 5:46about this Gold Glove that this guy won.
- 5:47It must have been an awful crop of right fielders that year for
- 5:50him to get to for him to come out on top.
- 5:52I mean, I thought it cost his team two runs yesterday when he
- 5:55took a bad route to a ball that cost Horton in the first inning.
- 5:59They're down to zip right after that.
- 6:01Never recovered. A couple of weeks ago in Miami,
- 6:03it's the same thing. We talked about that point.
- 6:05We did. I'm not a fan of Kyle Tucker and
- 6:09he's it's going to cost a half a billion dollars.
- 6:12Is the money better spent elsewhere, do you think?
- 6:16If it gets up to the 500 million, absolutely.
- 6:18I think it'll more be in the threes, maybe low threes.
- 6:22I, I think he, he's just going through a bit of a power outage
- 6:24right now. I do think that defensively, no,
- 6:26he's not that great. I agree with you there.
- 6:28But offensively, I think he's a great, great player.
- 6:32I mean, remember he finished fifth in the LMVP voting two
- 6:34years ago. Last year he was having a better
- 6:36year than that. He just got hit in the shin and
- 6:38couldn't get back on the field. I think he worked wonders for
- 6:41the Cubs offense early, early, he was amazing.
- 6:44I think it helped a lot of other guys residually.
- 6:48And I do think he'll get hot again power wise here in the
- 6:51summer months. So I'm going to have to sort of
- 6:53disagree with you there. I he's not, you know, if it,
- 7:00like I said, if it gets up to $500 million, absolutely not.
- 7:03But I do think, you know, low three hundreds, yeah, I think
- 7:07that he's worth it and he's that good.
- 7:08And he's still only 28 years old and he's got All Star numbers
- 7:12right now. He's he's walked more than he
- 7:13struck out. He has a nice on base percentage
- 7:16even though he's in the middle of a power outage.
- 7:17He still has 12 Hummers. He's stolen 16 bases and
- 7:20seventeen tries. I think he's a great player.
- 7:24For us in the great Midwest, we saw another Sunday Night
- 7:26baseball with another Red Sox. Yankees game rolled her eyes,
- 7:30But Hunter Dobbins added a little bit to something, a
- 7:33little more intrigue and maybe, just maybe, is it fair to say
- 7:37the Red Sox have been a disappointment under 500?
- 7:39I didn't think they were going to win the division, but I
- 7:41thought they were going to be certainly better and and maybe
- 7:43push in upper 80s in terms of wins.
- 7:45Certainly not on that pace. But Dobbins at least added a
- 7:48little intrigue over the weekend as the Red Sox.
- 7:50Maybe this catapults him? Maybe I actually thought about
- 7:53that when they got down early to the Yankees.
- 7:57I started looking ahead at some of the players that they might
- 7:59sell if they were going to be sellers of the trade deadline.
- 8:01It's not as juicy as Diamondbacks, but you know,
- 8:03there were some pieces that they could sell, but then they won.
- 8:08And like, I don't know about 8 1/2 in the East, but they're
- 8:11only four out of the wild card spot.
- 8:12Bregman's probably going to be back in, what, two or three
- 8:15weeks? Duron's better than he's been
- 8:17hitting. You probably think you're going
- 8:19to get a lot more out of several guys in the rotation who are
- 8:22having years that are worse than we thought.
- 8:24I picked them when the AL ES heading into the season, I'll
- 8:26own that they're not going to do that.
- 8:29But I definitely. That was just to say that I
- 8:31definitely thought that they had a lot of talent this year and
- 8:33could make some noise. So sometimes it starts late.
- 8:36Only three games over 500, under 500 right now.
- 8:39And winning a series in the Bronx is the type of thing that
- 8:42can get them going. So yeah, I think so.
- 8:45Look, they need more consistency on the offensive side and they
- 8:49scored ten runs last night and they flashed a graphic that only
- 8:53the Cubs have scored ten runs more often than the Yankees and
- 8:55Red Sox both. They both have done it 10 times.
- 8:57Cubs have done it 12 times. So it's if you have the
- 9:00firepower to score 10 runs, 10 different games through your
- 9:04first 67, you should have a lot more consistency there.
- 9:08So maybe that will come. And Roman Anthony is on his way,
- 9:11so. Yeah.
- 9:13So he's a 500 foot home run. What are they waiting for?
- 9:16Is it as simple as service time? Is there something else that I'm
- 9:19missing? I think that they're they feel
- 9:21like there's log jams on the roster and they're trying to
- 9:27figure out first base too, which if the Devers would just pick up
- 9:30a first baseman and then like David.
- 9:31Or run out of ground ball. Is that too much?
- 9:34Down. Yeah, that might that might have
- 9:35helped. But you know, I still think that
- 9:39they're holding out hope they're going to get something out of
- 9:42Yoshida at DH when he's healthy. I don't know.
- 9:47I mean, I guess they just feel like there's other guys that
- 9:49they want to have opportunities. You wouldn't think they would be
- 9:52worried about something like Super 2 and their situation
- 9:55where they're fighting for a playoff spot and there's such a
- 9:57huge market. It feels like it's something
- 9:59else, like they're trying to sort other things out.
- 10:01You just trade them way early, like they did with Mookie Beck.
- 10:03'S right? Yeah, do that.
- 10:05We got to talk about the Saint Louis Cardinals.
- 10:07Took two or three from the Dodgers.
- 10:09Clayton Kershaw was the one starting pitcher for the Dodgers
- 10:12that got the win yesterday. He went five innings, which is
- 10:15about his Max now, maybe 6 on on a good day for him.
- 10:18But next stop is the Hall of Fame, obviously.
- 10:20But these Cardinals, here they are, they're seven games above
- 10:23500. We thought when the schedule got
- 10:25a little bit tougher, waters were going to get deeper.
- 10:28Come talk to me after they get through this, while they're
- 10:30making their way through it, Matt, and they're hanging.
- 10:32Around, Yeah, they are. They're they're only four games
- 10:35out. I actually had a thought for
- 10:38power ranking my, my intro on there on CBSSports.com.
- 10:42Hey, there's a plug. I usually never plug anything.
- 10:43There's one. I'm surprised.
- 10:46I tried to find the last time that the Cubs and Cardinals were
- 10:501-2 and it was a close race and I had to go all the way back to
- 10:541945 when the Cubs won the Pennant over the Cardinals by
- 10:57three-game. Now, 2015, there were only three
- 11:00games apart, but the Pirates were in between. 2016, the
- 11:03Cardinals finished second to the Cubs, but it was 17 1/2 games,
- 11:06so that wasn't a race. So we haven't had a close Cubs,
- 11:09Cardinals 12 race in a long, long, long time, and that could
- 11:13be really fun. You know what, the reason I said
- 11:16I was surprised, not surprised that you have them 9th, just the
- 11:19fact that they are ninth because I thought this team would be in
- 11:22the 20s, right all year. I they're they're better than
- 11:26most people thought they were going to be.
- 11:27They're actually scoring runs. Like you can't say enough about
- 11:31what Brennan Donovan is doing for the Elephants, but also
- 11:34Wilson Contreras has been very good after an awful, awful will
- 11:37start. He's been good ever since then.
- 11:40Seems like they found something with Yvonne Herrera and then in
- 11:42the rotation they Myles Michael is awful for like two or three
- 11:46starts, but he's been great since then.
- 11:48You've got Sunny Gray there. You know, Polante keeps the ball
- 11:51on the ground. Liberatore has palate.
- 11:53Like they've got, you know, good back into the bull 10.
- 11:56They've got some players, I obviously heavy bias here as a
- 12:01Cubs fan, but I don't think they're nearly as good as the
- 12:03Cubs. But hey, they're only four games
- 12:06back right now and they haven't even played each other yet.
- 12:08June 23rd is coming, yeah. Four-game series to start, so
- 12:11Yep, it's coming. In terms of baseball, you never
- 12:14know, and the Pirates proved just that over the weekend
- 12:16against the Phillies as they get the sweep.
- 12:19I did see this though in my e-mail inbox.
- 12:23Paul skins next team betting odds are out there that are
- 12:26available. Don't tell me the Yankees are
- 12:28the Dodgers. Well, your betting favorite is
- 12:30the Dodgers at plus 250. Your second choice is the
- 12:32Yankees at 3:00 to 1:00, followed by the Tigers, Red Sox,
- 12:35but the Pirates, actually. And he'll flirt with the Blue
- 12:38Jays and everyone will think he's going there and then he'll
- 12:40pull the rug. Out.
- 12:41He will not flirt with the twins.
- 12:43I do know that much. Could you see that happening?
- 12:45Trade deadline that Skins has moved and the pirates throw the
- 12:48white flag again. No, absolutely not.
- 12:51Not yet. He he barely has over a year of
- 12:54service time. He's not even getting close to
- 12:55arbitration yet. They, this would be if they
- 12:59traded him this year. It, it would be I, I don't want
- 13:04to say scandal, but it would be dramatic.
- 13:08It would be a situation where we had to say we need to call into
- 13:11question whether or not they deserve to have a baseball team
- 13:14because he was just drafted number one overall two years
- 13:16ago. He started the Austrian last
- 13:18year. He's going to start at this
- 13:19year. He's still making six figures,
- 13:21not even 7 figures. If you can't do that, get a
- 13:25number one pick and turn around and have two years later still
- 13:27keep him on your team, then you don't deserve to have a team.
- 13:31So it would be, I would definitely, I would write an
- 13:35article to say that Major League Baseball needs to get involved
- 13:38in to change ownership or something like kind of like they
- 13:40forced the issue with McCourt with the Dodgers.
- 13:43I would say something like that. They can't do that right now.
- 13:46Speaking to the Dodgers, have we over rated this team, Overvalued
- 13:51this team? They're still good.
- 13:52They're still in first place, but I'm starting to think that
- 13:55they might not get out of the National League.
- 13:57I mean, the Phillies, the Mets are playing out of the mines.
- 14:00These Dodgers, are they? I don't want to say they're up
- 14:02against it, but I don't know how they continue to rate as the
- 14:05favorite. Should they be?
- 14:09Probably not, but then again, we have to pick whoever and
- 14:11somebody else is a favorite. I mean, I, I mean tigers, they
- 14:14definitely look better. They look better.
- 14:17I think the Mets are, Yeah, you said.
- 14:18And the Mets are going to get Manaya and Montas back.
- 14:20And the rotations already been really, really good.
- 14:23And Juan Soto hasn't been himself.
- 14:25So. Yeah, it's interesting.
- 14:27Like I had the number one heading into the year, so maybe
- 14:31I did overrate them too. But I kept cautioning against
- 14:34all this rhetoric about it's not fair for baseball.
- 14:37Baseball needs to change the system.
- 14:39They're too good. All along.
- 14:41I was like, gosh darn man, people, they won one World
- 14:45Series in a row. One, yeah, so we're finding out,
- 14:50yeah, it's not just that easy because they only have a one
- 14:52game lead over the Padres and the Giants.
- 14:54Both are right on their heels. They're in San Diego right now.
- 14:57They might not be in first place in the middle of June after
- 15:00there was so much talk over the offseason about how they're so
- 15:03good. It's not fair.
- 15:04They still might win the World Series.
- 15:07I can't see them missing the playoffs, but I could see them
- 15:09getting bounced in the first round.
- 15:10So it's that baseball is a different animal than other
- 15:14sports, and I feel like sometimes football and
- 15:16basketball minds that creeps on over.
- 15:18Guilty. Yes.
- 15:20Guilty No. Absolutely.
- 15:21Matt, over the weekend, my team, the Twins, Ken's team, the Blue
- 15:25Jays got together. Blue Jays took the series 2 out
- 15:27of three. Good series though, good games,
- 15:29all of them out, compelling games.
- 15:31Both teams sit identical 35 and 30.
- 15:35If you had to take a pick one of these teams who is better
- 15:37equipped to make a run come playoff time, say they're both
- 15:40in there. I'm going to get somebody mad at
- 15:41me. I'll put you.
- 15:43On it and answer that question correctly.
- 15:47I, I, I I lean twins. I do too Slight.
- 15:50It's slight there. I actually don't really trust
- 15:53either one of them. Sorry, no.
- 15:56We're both with you, no? I think you guys probably both
- 15:58agree. I know how fans are.
- 16:00So yeah, fans usually if you have a team that's slightly
- 16:03above average, you always think they're worse than their record
- 16:05and you focus on the negative. So yeah, I, I don't really trust
- 16:09either team, but I'll lean Twins there because I feel like they
- 16:13have a lot more untapped, which is having gotten almost nothing
- 16:17from Royce Lewis so far or Carlos Correa should be a better
- 16:21hitter, stuff like that. It feels like you go, you can go
- 16:24up and down the Twins roster and say there should be more here,
- 16:26there should be more here. Blue Jays definitely should hit
- 16:28more home runs though, so there's a little bit more there
- 16:31too. Absolutely.
- 16:32Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com, CBSSports.com or you can read
- 16:36Matt Snyder. You can hear with Trent tonight,
- 16:38every Monday during the baseball season.
- 16:41Thank you, buddy. Appreciate.
- 16:42We'll talk to you in seven days. Have a great week, Matt.
- 16:44Appreciate it. Sounds good take.
- 16:46Care good to talk to you Matt Snyder So we talked a little MLB
- 16:49and what is a pretty good week of baseball at least to start
- 16:52the to start the week some big series Cubs Phillies I hate the
- 16:56fact that the Phillies got swept was the Cubs arrive in town
- 16:59they'll be in a pissed off mood. Well, they should have been
- 17:02pissed off yesterday and. The day before, right, Padres
- 17:06hosts the Dodgers. That's good.
- 17:08That's really good. That's.
- 17:09My late night viewing for the next couple of nights.
- 17:11Yeah, I think that's where I'll be too.
- 17:12I am. I love that series.
- 17:14They hate each other, the fan bases hate each other.
- 17:17It's. It's not to the extent well, I'm
- 17:19not there. So it it feels like giants
- 17:22dodgers will always be more hate filled.
- 17:26I mean, something got murdered. I mean, I know that's obviously,
- 17:31but you're right. This is a pretty good rivalry.
- 17:33But it's in San Diego. There's vitriol, Yeah, the Big
- 17:36Brother kind of thing. You got that kind of factor been
- 17:38to. That ballpark I'd love to Petco
- 17:40love to go. Yes, or nothing but great
- 17:42things. Same with you.
- 17:42I've never been in San Diego. Oh, it's gorgeous.
- 17:44I know. I continue here.
- 17:47That's where that's where Tara lived her first couple of years.
- 17:49Her dad was in the Navy. Yeah.
- 17:52So we've always talked about having a return trip, going with
- 17:55her mom and her parents and going back to their old stomping
- 17:58grounds, that kind of thing. Need to make that happen some
- 17:59year. I look Matt's power numbers at
- 18:02CBSSports.com. Yeah.
- 18:03What do you think? Blue Jays 13, Twins 14.
- 18:06Is that where they are? That's about right.
- 18:08I agree. So you watched.
- 18:09I know a lot over the weekend. Royce Lewis, What did you see?
- 18:14Did you see? I saw him smiling again.
- 18:16And I told you, you know, last week when he had the double that
- 18:21was almost a home run and just seeing that smile and, and the
- 18:24goofiness and putting back in the dugout.
- 18:27I, I feel like he's close. And I don't know if this is just
- 18:30fan want out of me or if you that obviously do not have that
- 18:34fan viewpoint if you see the same thing.
- 18:35I want him to be good. It's better when the twins are
- 18:38good, yeah. Your your Co host is in a better
- 18:42mood. I'll tell you the other kid that
- 18:44I was called Brooks Lee. Yeah, he's good.
- 18:46He's he's just a Sal. He's he's a grinder.
- 18:49He's going to be in the league for 1012 years.
- 18:52Yeah, he'll probably be at like 4 different stops, but yeah,
- 18:54he's a guy. Brooks Lee still collecting a
- 18:56paycheck when he's 35. Is is he that?
- 18:58Old, no, no, When he's just got that kind of profile that he's
- 19:02just going to stick in the league for a long time, just
- 19:04going to be able to do a lot of different things.
- 19:06Alec Bussey will join us when we come back.
- 19:08Miller and Condon on a Monday. You're listening to the Iowa
- 19:12Sports Radio Network. Hi coming up on 130 Miller in
- 19:17Condon. Iowa Sports Radio Network take
- 19:20you until just before 2. The trench plays of the day is
- 19:25still to come. Circus sports sponsor those.
- 19:27We get to those about 10 minutes before 2:00.
- 19:30Alec Bussey covers Iowa State for cyclonealert.com, part of
- 19:3424/7 Sports. So did your fiance get the guy
- 19:38the gown ordered? Was that a success?
- 19:41Did you scratch or check that box this weekend?
- 19:45You know, I don't want to comment too much.
- 19:46I don't know too many of the details.
- 19:48I don't think I'm allowed to know too many of the details.
- 19:52I. I think she has finalists.
- 19:54I guess I would put it that way. She's narrowed it down.
- 19:58Yeah, I'll have no idea what they look like.
- 19:59I assume it'll be black. Oh yeah, that's not good.
- 20:03That's not a good way to go into it Well.
- 20:05I'm kidding. I.
- 20:07Know and I hope she doesn't listen.
- 20:12I want to I guess what I want to start with you is do do we know
- 20:15any more about Jet Tamala? Seems like Cyclone Nations kind
- 20:18of on the edge of their seat. It's an Alabama offer.
- 20:22I would hope that they would understand, you know, if indeed
- 20:24that's the direction he decides to go.
- 20:27What? What?
- 20:28What's the Where do we stand on Monday, June the 9th?
- 20:31Alec Bussey. Yeah.
- 20:33I mean, I think that IO States visit with Jet Tamala went well.
- 20:37I don't know how many details I would say got in terms of where
- 20:41he is particularly leaning one way or the other.
- 20:44I believe he's competing in like A7 on seven thing today in Iowa.
- 20:48I've seen some videos of him online throwing to tight end
- 20:51target Isaac Jensen, who took an official visit to Iowa State at
- 20:55the beginning of the month, May 30th to June versus when he was
- 20:58on campus. I do think that Iowa State is
- 21:02aware obviously of there being serious thoughts from Tamala and
- 21:06his family about Alabama's pursuits.
- 21:09I also do think that Iowa State should feel confident about
- 21:12their relationships with Tamala and knows being in a spot where
- 21:16they keep Iowa State in the mix. For sure.
- 21:19Right. Like if he didn't feel strongly
- 21:21about where he was at with Iowa State, I don't think that he
- 21:23would have followed through with his official visit this past
- 21:26weekend after visiting Bama a week prior.
- 21:29So I do think that there's a lot to kind of consider for him and
- 21:32his family. And I'm sure that there's going
- 21:33to be a lot of thought, a lot of discussion had over the next
- 21:37several days. And there's more reporting on
- 21:39the website, which you can check out right now for 60% off of an
- 21:43annual subscription. So it is shameless plug myself
- 21:47there a little bit. Don't want to give up too much
- 21:50but yeah there is more information on the website so
- 21:52check it out. If you are not AVIP member, it's
- 21:55a great time to sign up. Pete Egglitus makes his
- 21:57commitment over the weekend to Iowa State.
- 22:00He is 67275. He is a big one now just reading
- 22:05and we've seen a couple of the highlights that are there on
- 22:0724/7. He is not projected as a left
- 22:10tackle at the Big 10 leveled right or Big 12 level.
- 22:13Is this more right tackle maybe interior guy?
- 22:16You just footwork what I see the physicality and that's what's
- 22:19brought up first. You think probably not the foot
- 22:21to be a left tackle. Is that fair?
- 22:23Yeah, I think we'll see where he ends up playing on either left
- 22:27or right side. He definitely is a tackle frame
- 22:29though, right? Like he's 6 foot 7.
- 22:30He's already approaching 300 lbs and have to double check his
- 22:33weight, but he's a big kid. He's certainly really physical.
- 22:36Ryan Clinton, IA State's offensive line coach, absolutely
- 22:39loves the physicality that he plays with.
- 22:42That's something that Clinton doesn't want to have to teach
- 22:44him. With the guidest, they certainly
- 22:45will not have to worry about that.
- 22:46He is a very violent hitter. He will finish, finish defenders
- 22:53and run blocking. I need to see more from him and
- 22:56pass production to get a great read from where his footwork is
- 22:58at there. Obviously pass protection is
- 23:00harder to evaluate. There's not as much of it for a
- 23:03lot of high schoolers, especially when they have a
- 23:06strong offensive line. You try to just run the ball as
- 23:08best as you can. But he has a good get for IO
- 23:10State. He's our third offensive lineman
- 23:12in the class when he made some band hour.
- 23:14A legacy commit from Colorado and then Ethan Beckman will
- 23:18likely play on the interior. I would say continuing to pursue
- 23:22Owen Winder, a three star tackle from Dexter, MI.
- 23:25I think I would say it sits well with him, but he's going to keep
- 23:27his recruitment open for at least another weekend as he
- 23:30prepares to take an official visit to BYU this week.
- 23:34Interesting stuff. So you mentioned Jensen, the
- 23:36tight end. I thought are are they close
- 23:39with him? Yeah, good question.
- 23:42I think that they are in his upper tier.
- 23:47I going into the month, I know that Missouri and Florida State
- 23:50were viewed as the favorites for Isaac Jensen.
- 23:53I don't think that Texas A&M was maybe as well positioned as
- 23:56those two schools were. They obviously have a good
- 23:59connection at Millard South with Tamala being in the class and
- 24:02obviously a Marion, Marion Jackson receiver defensive back
- 24:06in the class as well. So I think that helps.
- 24:08I also think it helps Iowa State that Nebraska is not involved at
- 24:11all. The Jensen doesn't have much of
- 24:13an interest in even hearing Nebraska out from what I
- 24:15understand right now and Iowa State success in Omaha is
- 24:19certainly something that he is aware of and something that a
- 24:21lot of those prospects of the Omaha area.
- 24:23They have 4 commits I think from Omaha in this in this cycle have
- 24:28all discussed how how cool it is that they're all traveling up
- 24:31north to play names. And obviously they would like to
- 24:34add Isaac Johnson to that group if it's something that he
- 24:37chooses to do. I believe he has his official
- 24:39visit to Florida State this week after visiting Missouri this
- 24:42past weekend. You.
- 24:44Know when you talk, talk about that connection to Omaha, not I
- 24:46think only a couple of those guys have had over the last
- 24:49couple of years have had Nebraska offers.
- 24:51Is it Nebraska? I mean, talking to Nebraska
- 24:54people, is it that they're just maybe recruiting at a bigger
- 24:57footprint? They're not looking at Omaha as
- 24:59much can. Can you read anything into it
- 25:01from also the Nebraska side of things, why so many of these
- 25:04good prospects, Yeah, are, are leaving there and leaving
- 25:07without a Nebraska offer, which was a rarity for these top end
- 25:10prospects. Yeah, certainly a really good
- 25:12question. Trent.
- 25:14In the Jet Somala instance, Nebraska's quarterback commit is
- 25:18the little brother of Dylan Rayola.
- 25:20I'm blanking on what his first name is right now.
- 25:22So I that is why they didn't ever.
- 25:26Yes, it does. It's something Derayola.
- 25:28I don't know what it is, Devin, maybe something like that.
- 25:31I would need to double check. That is why they never showed
- 25:35any significant interest in Jet Somala, or at least one reason.
- 25:39I presume there was never any Nebraska interest in him.
- 25:43I do think that they have offered Jensen.
- 25:46I just don't necessarily think Jensen is super interested in
- 25:49going there from what I've understood.
- 25:52I don't want to speak too much on it just because I'm not too
- 25:55in tune with things. Obviously, Matt Rule had his
- 25:58comments shoot about a month or two ago now where he discussed,
- 26:02you know, their lack of success or, or or lack of investment.
- 26:06I guess you could say in in offering kids from the state and
- 26:09recruiting kids from the state, which traditionally Nebraska has
- 26:11been very good at doing. He spoke about meeting kids that
- 26:16are good enough to play Nebraska while also talking about meeting
- 26:21those players to be good enough to beat Ohio State in Michigan
- 26:24and the other great schools in the Big 10.
- 26:27I do think that it's worth pointing out, and I just watched
- 26:29Andrew Ivins of 24/7 say this on a clip I saw on social media,
- 26:33Mr. Brassic, class will be smaller.
- 26:35They've taken a lot of transfers and obviously rule is on a large
- 26:39roster overhaul in the first couple of years that he's been
- 26:42there. So that we have 4 commits right
- 26:44now. I think their average player
- 26:45ranking is about an 88. So it's not obviously a cost, a
- 26:49little ton of value or a ton of star players right now.
- 26:53But obviously you probably want to be a little bit further along
- 26:57at that point. But I don't cover Nebraska
- 26:59recruiting super closely. But you know, you want to have
- 27:02more than 4 commits at this point in the cycle.
- 27:05But maybe things will come together for Nebraska here this
- 27:08week or next week. I would need to pay more
- 27:11attention to to where they're at on the recruiting side to be
- 27:14able to discuss it more deeply. You you might not know the
- 27:17answer to this Bandauer, a legacy recruit.
- 27:21Obviously his dad Todd, was a quarterback there.
- 27:24I'm trying to figure out. Did he lose his job to Sage?
- 27:27Was it a late 90s for Oh boy for Todd Bandauer?
- 27:30I'd have to go back. I think it was.
- 27:34Yeah, that's me before my time where I was born.
- 27:38I think that was I, I remember looking at his staff and he was
- 27:41very productive when he ranks highly in a lot of Iowa State's
- 27:44passing categories all time. Obviously Purdy is passing in
- 27:48some of those. Rocco Bech will pass him in a
- 27:50lot of those as well by the end, by the end of his career.
- 27:53But he's like a top five, top 10 passer in a lot of categories
- 27:57for Iowa State. I think he was their starting
- 28:00quarterback like 96 to 2000 or something.
- 28:03In that time I would have to double check what I wrote down
- 28:06in previous stories. I think he was the Iowa State
- 28:08quarterback when I went on the air in. 95 is when he began.
- 28:13He went 42 and 90 passing that year, played just a couple of
- 28:17games in 96 and then was a starter in 97 and 98.
- 28:21So Sage took over for him then, right?
- 28:24Because he won the Insight, but he was a quarterback for the
- 28:27inside bowl and 2000 was that 2000 or 2001?
- 28:31And. He was the quarterback to end
- 28:33the streak. Yeah.
- 28:34No, he was. Yeah.
- 28:36Unbelievable. As Moses JJ Moses that day.
- 28:38Was amazing. We'll end on this TJ and the and
- 28:43the crew getting back together. Not this week right at
- 28:45basketball. The summer practices start at
- 28:48the this coming weekend. Help me out with the schedule.
- 28:52Yeah, players are expected to be on campus June 14th.
- 28:56That's the mandatory report date by I believe, and then practices
- 28:59should start on the 16th. I know there's been a lot of
- 29:02discussion out there about Mason Williams, a transfer from
- 29:06Eastern Washington, about his status and what his, you know,
- 29:10injury status is. I think that's something that I
- 29:12will say will evaluate once he gets to campus.
- 29:15And Audie Crooks had a nice honor come her way today.
- 29:18Did I see that and Addie Brown or just one?
- 29:22I think both, but I need to double check that it was a Team
- 29:25USA thing. I don't remember what was on the
- 29:27graphic. I think Brown, I think they both
- 29:29were, but I I know Audie Crooks was for sure.
- 29:31Anyways, good stuff as always, Alec, appreciate what you do for
- 29:35us, what you do for KX and O here as I know you're on the
- 29:38morning show here this morning. Keep up the good work brother.
- 29:41Appreciate this. What I list one more time.
- 29:44Talk about the offer going on at cyclonealert.com.

- 29:51subscription. So it's a great time to join the

- 30:03informed Iowa State fans that you can be with lots of

- 30:08and obviously team Intel and reporting coming throughout the
- 30:11fall and in the winter as teams are continuing their

- 30:17or you're a Nebraska fan, I mean you're not a 24/7 member.

- 30:38Great cross promotion there brother.
- 30:40Good stuff. I will talk to you next week.
- 30:41Thank you, Alec Bussey. Thank you guys, looking forward
- 30:44to have a great rest of. The day you too good to talk to
- 30:46you Alec Bussey 24/7 Sports cyclonealert.com I'll say this
- 30:50about Cyclone Alert. They sure hire good talkers on
- 30:53the radio. They do They're.
- 30:54Even really fortunate we really have.
- 30:57Olson. Swain, you know, Bussy Yeah.
- 31:01Monts. Yes, absolutely.
- 31:03Dylan, Dylan Monts Now they've been, we've been very fortunate.
- 31:07And so they over there. All right, good stuff.
- 31:10Trent's plays of the day or next.
- 31:11I'm trying to find a box score from that 98 game.
- 31:15I'm not finding anything. For what?
- 31:17What? What 98 game?
- 31:18You should DIY mistake. Oh, are you?
- 31:19Yeah, wouldn't when the quarterback Todd Bandauer, that
- 31:24year he threw 14 touchdowns, completed 50.4% of his passes
- 31:30and that 20 picks. Did he?
- 31:32Yeah, year before, as a junior, 20 touchdowns, 9 interceptions
- 31:37in that season. But I'm clicking.
- 31:39Around bet he had the bet he had a Davis in the backfield.
- 31:41Yes, yeah, they had. So that was my freshman year.
- 31:45Was it? I knew nothing.
- 31:47About 98 was your freshman year. I knew I had no memories at all
- 31:53of Iowa State winning a football game in my life.
- 31:56I show up, Jesus, game number two.
- 32:00Well, here comes another clubbing and I will will roll
- 32:03right And an 18 year old and eviated Trent Condon learned
- 32:08something new that this rivalry is changing.
- 32:10Yeah. It was about to.
- 32:11In a big time for. The better because it wasn't
- 32:14much of a rivalry. And the number of Cyclone fans
- 32:17were not plentiful that day in connection.
- 32:19No, no, no, no, no, no. But they were loud.
- 32:22Yeah. And 70,000 were in the stands
- 32:24and it might have been at that time, 3000 it seems.
- 32:28To me that that you can trace that and and clearly Pollard's
- 32:32billboards to the resurgence of I don't want to call it hate
- 32:36'cause I don't think it's hate. Do you think it is?
- 32:39There's certain segments, but I mean, they're, they're loony
- 32:42birds, right, Right. It's.
- 32:43Not there's there's worse, yes, hate rivalries absolutely in in
- 32:47the sport. But that to me was those, those
- 32:51two, I don't know, points on the in history seem to elevate this
- 32:57to new levels. Pollard took it to a whole new
- 32:59level. I mean, the billboards were so
- 33:01good for business. But it was it was already
- 33:03trending. It was absolutely Dan McCartney.
- 33:05Yes, I mean it was. The khakis should have their
- 33:08place in the Hall of Fame because with the sweat stains in
- 33:10them. The billboards were seven years
- 33:12after the streak end. The billboards were, I mean,
- 33:16things have been going on for a while.
- 33:18Bruce van de Velde was steering the ship.
- 33:21I think another component to that though is it was the
- 33:25Eastern component. I've told you before and you,
- 33:27you, you look at me like I. Don't know.
- 33:28I don't know you're. Right.
- 33:29It's it's not a rivalry like it is here.
- 33:33Des Moines is its own entity for this rivalry.
- 33:36Central Iowa is different and the same thing.
- 33:39Growing up, even in North Iowa, Ames is closer than Iowa City.
- 33:42But I was I was state was an afterthought in the 80s because
- 33:46mostly the football program for the general sport fan of that
- 33:50time and what the winning streak ending then six straight from
- 33:55Iowa State after that. I'll be just year after year
- 33:58after year that. Iowa couldn't get past them.
- 34:01But then you put those. Scores the 25, seven or some
- 34:03weird score. 27/9. 27 nine, OK. That was the beginning, though,
- 34:09and then when you put those billboards up in eastern Iowa,
- 34:13that was something that hadn't been seen.
- 34:15OK, we see them once a year. It's an annoying rivalry because
- 34:18they're winning now after 15 straight.
- 34:21But that was kind of it, that we're coming into your
- 34:24territory. Yeah.
- 34:25And then he changed the get in price one year for the.
- 34:28That was a big one. Like you had to buy season
- 34:30tickets and the Iowa game was 100 bucks.
- 34:34Yep, and that at the time seemed like you out of your mind.
- 34:39It worked. You've.
- 34:39Absolutely worked. Look at what they do in terms of
- 34:42ticket sales. You look at the numbers of
- 34:45tickets sold and throw well you got you could get hillside seats
- 34:49for cheap OK. Still, if you watch this
- 34:52football program in the 80s and most of the 90s, they were lucky
- 34:57for a good conference game outside of Nebraska to have
- 34:5940,000 people there and they needed.
- 35:01Nebraska to bring the Phyllis Stadium.
- 35:03It was 2530 thousand people actually in the stands for big A
- 35:07football games and now we got the what?
- 35:11Second biggest stadium? Second in the Big 12.
- 35:13In the Big 12. This program has come a long.
- 35:17Way Trent's plays of the day. They are next Circus Sports
- 35:20sponsors Miller and Condon Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 35:23Back with you one final time Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 35:26Sports Radio Network. Trent Condon flying solo for the
- 35:30final segment today can got to skip out just a couple minutes
- 35:33early for his, well, his day job.
- 35:36So he had to duck out of here a little bit early.
- 35:39Of course, he'll be back with us though, right away to kick off
- 35:42the show tomorrow on Tuesday. Well, before we get into my
- 35:46picks of the day, as always presented by Circa sports high,
- 35:50low up and down. We'll try it and we have what, 4
- 35:53games on tap here today. We'll get to them momentarily.
- 35:57Talk with Alec Bussey little bit earlier on, Alec mentioned that
- 36:01Audie Brooks along with Addie Brown, they have been invited
- 36:04for the 2025 USA Women's America team training camp later this
- 36:09summer trying to make the cut and make themselves a part of
- 36:13that team. Also on that team, Hannah Stalky
- 36:16also has been invited to those team trials.
- 36:18We'll have a little bit of local flavor.
- 36:20Always good to have something local in there to make that
- 36:23happen and I'll get that connection going there.
- 36:26Also, another update that happened here during our show
- 36:28today, if you're hoping for the return of Caitlin Clark, and you
- 36:33know, it's crazy last summer, what had morphed into with our
- 36:36program and, and I know just in general, the sports conversation
- 36:40in the state of Iowa, how the WNBA had become such a big part
- 36:43of the lexicon. And now with Caitlin Clark being
- 36:47injured these last couple of weeks, just how quickly that is
- 36:50dissipated and completely falling off and falling off the
- 36:52radar. Didn't see one bounce of the
- 36:55ball in the Fever Sky game on Saturday night on Cbsi did click
- 36:59it on just for a moment in the pregame show, but that was it.
- 37:03Actual gameplay didn't even get there.
- 37:05And there was not a whole lot going on outside of baseball on
- 37:08Saturday evening, but the Fever dominated that one.
- 37:11An update though is the Fever are back in action tomorrow as
- 37:15they'll be down in Atlanta taking on the dream at 6:30.
- 37:18Caitlin Clark is going to remain out.
- 37:21Just saw a little clip also from Stephanie White, the Fever head
- 37:25coach, and she mentioned that still hasn't been cleared for
- 37:28basketball activities. Now we see her hopping around
- 37:30out there during the highlights and and Macon plays from her
- 37:34teammates and and doing that. But interesting that at least
- 37:38the terminology that I saw from Steph White that she has not
- 37:41been cleared for basketball activities.
- 37:42So something to keep an eye on. There is.
- 37:44And now we're going on 2 1/2 weeks without Kate and Clark out
- 37:47there for the Fever. All right, picks of the day
- 37:49presented by Circa Sports. Let's get into them here in our
- 37:52final moments of the program. We got 2 plays in baseball.
- 37:55Don't love this. Two favorites tonight.
- 37:57I'm jumping aboard with Wheeler and the Phillies tonight.
- 38:02The losing streak continues. Wheeler, though, coming off of
- 38:06the birth of a kid, see if he got enough rest.
- 38:09He was bad the last time out. I just don't think the Zach
- 38:11Wheeler's going to be bad two times in a row.
- 38:13I'll lay the -124 with the Phillies.
- 38:15Do the same with my boy Kikuchi and the Angels tonight against
- 38:19the A's -135 The Price with the Angels going to play the
- 38:23Panthers tonight in the Stanley Cup.
- 38:25Game three, I'll lay the -142 with the Panthers and one more
- 38:30with the WNBA. Give me the Valkyries tonight.
- 38:33Golden State plus 6 1/2. Think A7 out there in the
- 38:39market. We'll grab the points tonight.
- 38:41Golden State at La, the Valkyries over the Sparks.
- 38:46That'll do it for today. My picks of the day each and
- 38:49every day brought to you by Circa Sports.
- 38:52The drives coming up next stay right there on the Iowa Sports
- 38:55Radio Network.
