Transcript
- 0:00KARA: Good morning.
- 0:00DANI: Good morning.
- 0:01Oh my God.
- 0:03What a past 72 hours life has been.
- 0:06How was your book event?
- 0:07KARA: It was really good.
- 0:08Yeah, I met Sarah Novic at Books are Magic in Brooklyn Heights.
- 0:12Did you read True Biz, the book she wrote?
- 0:13DANI: No.
- 0:14KARA: Okay.
- 0:14Highly recommend to you and also everyone who's listening to this.
- 0:17DANI: You know I have a hard time reading nonfiction.
- 0:20KARA: Well, True Biz is fiction.
- 0:21DANI: Oh, it is.
- 0:22Oh, I didn't realize that.
- 0:22KARA: Yeah, True Biz is fiction.
- 0:23Mother Tongue is a memoir.
- 0:25DANI: Got it.
- 0:26KARA: Yeah.
- 0:26DANI: What is True Biz about?
- 0:27KARA: It follows a couple of Deaf high schoolers who live
- 0:31at this school for the Deaf.
- 0:33DANI: Cool.
- 0:33KARA: Yeah.
- 0:34And it's from all their different perspectives.
- 0:35Highly recommend.
- 0:36There was a lot of people at the book event who were really big fans of True
- 0:40Biz, and I'm reading Mother Tongue right now, which is her memoir of growing up as
- 0:45a Deaf person and also raising two sons, one who's hearing and one who's Deaf.
- 0:49The book event was fun.
- 0:50There was two interpreters there.
- 0:52I didn't like the moderator, though.
- 0:54The moderator was just some Brooklyn mom who's hearing.
- 0:57Doesn't have any experience with Deaf culture or the Deaf community.
- 1:01DANI: Oh, interesting.
- 1:02KARA: She was just asking very basic questions, and the audience
- 1:06was, like, half Deaf, half hearing.
- 1:08The questions she was throwing were very basic Deaf culture questions.
- 1:12DANI: Mm, she should've listened to the pod.
- 1:14KARA: Literally.
- 1:15And then I think I… It didn't help that I've also read most of
- 1:19the book already, so I knew the answers to a lot of the questions.
- 1:22DANI: Yeah.
- 1:23Book events are really confusing to me.
- 1:25I tend not to attend them unless I'm, like, absolutely obsessed with the author.
- 1:30KARA: Yeah.
- 1:31DANI: Because I'm like, "Who is this for?" 'Cause I always feel like half of it is,
- 1:35like, in, in conversation for people who have already read the book, and then half
- 1:40of it is like, "Let me tell you about this book that you're about to read."
- 1:43KARA: Exactly.
- 1:43A lot of people had not read the book.
- 1:45DANI: Yeah.
- 1:45KARA: And they'd come because they liked True Biz.
- 1:48DANI: Yeah.
- 1:48KARA: Which makes sense.
- 1:49So yeah, the questions the moderator asked were not my favorite.
- 1:53There was one that was very, um, it really reminded me of when they were
- 1:57interviewing Regina and Kathryn about their daughters being switched at birth.
- 2:00and they were like, "Regina, how'd you do it?"
- 2:02DANI: Yeah.
- 2:03KARA: There was a question along those lines of like, "How'd
- 2:05you do it, being a Deaf mom and advocating for your Deaf son?"
- 2:08She was like, "That's just being a mom, girl. I don't know."
- 2:11DANI: Yeah.
- 2:11KARA: I think it would've been so much better if there was just another Deaf
- 2:15moderator, 'cause then the Q&A happened.
- 2:17There was only, like, four or five questions, but the Q&A
- 2:20questions were really good, and it was mostly from Deaf people.
- 2:24And they asked, like, really in-depth questions about the book or just
- 2:27about her life or Deaf identity, and then I was like, "Wait, this is
- 2:30so much better than the moderator."
- 2:33DANI: Is she doing more events in the city, or was this-
- 2:35KARA: In New York, I'm not sure.
- 2:37She's based in Philly.
- 2:38DANI: I'm like, you need to email the bookstore and be like, next time-
- 2:41KARA: Get-
- 2:42DANI: Check with me.
- 2:43KARA: Yeah, check with us.
- 2:44Yeah, please.
- 2:45So.
- 2:46DANI: Yeah.
- 2:46KARA: Overall, it was good.
- 2:47I was there for, like, two hours.
- 2:48She signed my book.
- 2:49DANI: Nice.
- 2:50KARA: She also had a little stamp that had her sign name in it
- 2:53DANI: Oh, that's so cute.
- 2:54KARA: Yeah, so it's like that
- 2:56DANI: Oh my God.
- 2:57KARA: Yeah.
- 2:57It was fun.
- 2:58DANI: That's awesome.
- 2:59KARA: Yeah, it's good.
- 2:59DANI: That's
- 2:59KARA: a good
- 2:59DANI: idea.
- 3:00KARA: I know.
- 3:00I was like, "That's genius."
- 3:02DANI: Anything else going on?
- 3:04KARA: We went to The Moth.
- 3:05DANI: We did go to The Moth.
- 3:06Oh my God.
- 3:06See, this week has been so…
- 3:08It's only Wed- no, it's Thursday.
- 3:10This week's been really long.
- 3:12KARA: Yeah.
- 3:12DANI: Positive, but really long.
- 3:13KARA: Yeah.
- 3:14We went to The Moth.
- 3:15If you don't know what The Moth is, it's like a storytelling podcast by NPR.
- 3:20DANI: We went specifically to The Moth's Story Slam.
- 3:23KARA: Yes.
- 3:24DANI: Which is like the most basic tier of The Moth, 'cause then they do The
- 3:27Moth Story Hour, which is the podcast.
- 3:30But they record that live, and that is with stories that they've already heard-
- 3:34KARA: Oh, so-
- 3:34DANI: That are pre-selected and quality.
- 3:36KARA: So the Story Slam, the winner of Story Slam, does she
- 3:40then get to go to Story Hour?
- 3:41DANI: I don't know if there's one more event in between those two.
- 3:44KARA: Okay.
- 3:45DANI: It's unclear to me.
- 3:46KARA: I thought they were recording.
- 3:48DANI: They are.
- 3:49KARA: Okay.
- 3:49DANI: They record every event, because if they find like a gem.
- 3:53KARA: Yeah.
- 3:54DANI: They'll use it.
- 3:55KARA: There wasn't a lot of gems in this one.
- 3:56DANI: There were not a lot of gems the other night.
- 3:59Basically, if you don't know how Story Slam works, the crowd comes
- 4:02in, there's a theme of the night.
- 4:04You can put your name in a hat, and they will pull 10 names randomly
- 4:09throughout the night, and you will get up with no notes, no props,
- 4:13nothing, just you, with five minutes to tell your story based on the theme.
- 4:18KARA: This theme was American Dream.
- 4:20DANI: Yes.
- 4:21So we probably should've known going in that it was going to be a bit uninspired.
- 4:25And also, it was the night of game three of the Knicks.
- 4:29KARA: Yes.
- 4:30DANI: The host kept making jokes like, "This crowd and the sports
- 4:33crowd don't overlap at all." But as someone who doesn't care about
- 4:36sports, I am watching the Knicks.
- 4:38KARA: Me too.
- 4:38DANI: Because we live in New York, and it's like this magical moment.
- 4:41There's like something in the air community spirit-wise, and
- 4:45everyone that goes to The Moth seems very community-minded.
- 4:48KARA: Yeah.
- 4:48DANI: So I can imagine that a lot of people were like torn between attending
- 4:52this event and watching the game.
- 4:54So it was pretty dead.
- 4:56So when we went before, there were probably like 50 people who volunteered.
- 5:00KARA: Mm-hmm.
- 5:01DANI: And they obviously only pull 10.
- 5:02And it is random, so that doesn't guarantee you quality.
- 5:05But this past time we went, there were only 11 people that put their name in, so
- 5:10only one guy didn't get to tell his story.
- 5:13KARA: Right.
- 5:13DANI: And yeah, I just feel that the quality wasn't great, and
- 5:20that's not the fault of The Moth.
- 5:22They can't control who's coming in.
- 5:24And I think the host is so great and pretty great about like making
- 5:28funny chitchat between stories.
- 5:30KARA: Yes.
- 5:30DANI: So even when you've just listened to a flop, you're kind
- 5:33of like having a good time.
- 5:35KARA: Yeah.
- 5:35I had a good time regardless.
- 5:36DANI: We had a good time.
- 5:37KARA: The winner did tell a great story about her IVF journey.
- 5:40DANI: Yes.
- 5:41That's the thing, there's always like one to two magical storytelling moments.
- 5:46KARA: Yeah.
- 5:46DANI: Where someone comes in and just like tells a really good, meaningful
- 5:49story that makes you feel like, oh wow, we're all just like humans connected.
- 5:54But a lot of people were like trying to tell stories about really big dreams.
- 5:59Uh- I feel like we're maybe not the right audience, because a lot of people
- 6:03were very supportive in the audience, and I was like, "That was bad."
- 6:08KARA: Yeah, the judging was very friendly.
- 6:09DANI: They pick judges out of the crowd at random.
- 6:12KARA: Yes.
- 6:12DANI: Before the show starts, like three groups of people.
- 6:15And I'm always worried they're gonna pick me, because I'm
- 6:17like, "I would be so mean."
- 6:19They're giving, like, really bad- it's out of 10.
- 6:21They're giving really bad stories, like, an 8.5.
- 6:24KARA: Yeah.
- 6:24I was like, "Whoa."
- 6:25DANI: And I'm like-
- 6:26KARA: Like, to me, that's a
- 6:26DANI: five.
- 6:27"That was excruciating to listen to. Are you sure?"
- 6:29KARA: They must all be drunk.
- 6:31Overall, I enjoyed it.
- 6:32We had great ASL interpreters there too.
- 6:34DANI: Yeah.
- 6:34KARA: I would go again.
- 6:35DANI: It was the same team from Annie DiRusso, was it not?
- 6:37KARA: The woman was different.
- 6:38The man was the same.
- 6:39DANI: Interesting, 'cause I had the same complaints about
- 6:42the woman that I had last time.
- 6:43KARA: I just think her signs are old-fashioned, and it
- 6:45doesn't translate exactly.
- 6:48What I also really liked about the male is that he signs to the beat
- 6:52of each line, even at the concert.
- 6:54DANI: Yeah.
- 6:54KARA: To the beat of each line, and the other one is always
- 6:58delayed, like, one or two lines.
- 7:00DANI: Yeah, and I watched her a couple of times get behind to the
- 7:04point that she just skipped stuff.
- 7:06KARA: Yes, I did notice that.
- 7:06DANI: Or, like, not know the sign for something and just skip it.
- 7:09KARA: Or she didn't hear.
- 7:11There would be a lot of times where she didn't hear or understand a name,
- 7:14and then she would just skip it.
- 7:15DANI: Yeah, which is, like, not what you're supposed to do.
- 7:18KARA: The… Also, by coincidence, there were two other ASL interpreters
- 7:22there who weren't there to work.
- 7:24They were just there to watch The Moth, and I think they would watch
- 7:27and then also interject and be like, "They said this. Make sure you sign
- 7:31that. Her name is this," and they were finger-spelling and help out.
- 7:35DANI: That's really nice.
- 7:36KARA: It is really nice.
- 7:37It was all for me.
- 7:38Okay, should we get to the show?
- 7:40DANI: Yeah, let's do it.
- 7:54My ice is clanging around in a glass.
- 7:55I know I'm sorry it's clanging.
- 7:56KARA: Clanging.
- 7:57DANI: Sorry, guys.
- 7:58It is 90 degrees today, so the windows are open, and I have
- 8:03a cold beverage, and we're
- 8:05- KARA: Are
- 8:05DANI: you
- 8:05KARA: drinking Diet Coke?
- 8:06DANI: No, no, this is cold brew.
- 8:07KARA: Oh, it's just very dark.
- 8:08DANI: I do have Diet Coke in the fridge, but it's only 10:30, so I'm gonna try
- 8:12to hold off until, like, lunch at least.
- 8:14KARA: That's fair.
- 8:15Season 1, Episode 28, We Are the Kraken of Our Own Sinking Ships.
- 8:20DANI: I tried to look this up.
- 8:21The one painting that came up was very weird.
- 8:24KARA: I think it's the one painting you found.
- 8:26DANI: The one with the baby?
- 8:27KARA: No.
- 8:28DANI: The… Isn't there a baby involved?
- 8:29Hold on.
- 8:29KARA: There's no babies.
- 8:31It's by David Nixon.
- 8:32It's a 2012 painting, so-
- 8:33DANI: Yeah.
- 8:34KARA: Oh, yeah, I think you're right.
- 8:35There was a baby.
- 8:36DANI: There's a baby.
- 8:37KARA: A worm?
- 8:38It's, like, an octopus.
- 8:39DANI: There's… That's the kraken.
- 8:41KARA: Yeah.
- 8:42DANI: There's also a baby.
- 8:43KARA: Yeah, you're right.
- 8:44I'm sorry.
- 8:44There is a baby on the right.
- 8:46From first glance, you see-
- 8:47DANI: I can't believe you were gaslighting me.
- 8:48KARA: I'm sorry.
- 8:49I didn't mean to.
- 8:50DANI: Yeah.
- 8:50There's a huge fucking baby.
- 8:52It's, like, part of the octopus.
- 8:54It's, like, half octopus, and then there's, like, a full
- 8:56baby, like, shriveled up.
- 8:58KARA: But then if you look closely at the octopus, you can see the
- 9:01creature is made up of humans.
- 9:03DANI: Oh, yeah, it is.
- 9:05KARA: Yeah.
- 9:05DANI: Oh, I hate it, actually.
- 9:07KARA: It's very creepy.
- 9:08DANI: It's
- 9:08KARA: really creepy.
- 9:08And then also-
- 9:09DANI: And then it's holding a ship in a bottle.
- 9:11KARA: A sinking ship inside a glass bottle.
- 9:13I took this as humans could be our own worst enemies.
- 9:16DANI: Wow.
- 9:17KARA: And also, I was thinking octopus-like Zarra's hair.
- 9:21DANI: And the dreads come up a lot in this episode.
- 9:23KARA: She's perhaps the enemy of this episode, the villain.
- 9:26DANI: I agree.
- 9:27KARA: We start off the episode at Maize, the restaurant.
- 9:31DANI: I texted you during the recap being like, "I'm scared
- 9:33just based on this recap."
- 9:35KARA: Yeah.
- 9:36DANI: The things they were like, "Remember this?" I was like, "Stop."
- 9:38KARA: Stop reminding me.
- 9:40Yeah.
- 9:40Daphne arrives into the kitchen.
- 9:43Chef Jeff says, "That kiss we did, that can never happen again." And
- 9:47then she goes, "Are you seeing Melody?" And he goes, "No, I
- 9:49ended that." And then they kiss-
- 9:51DANI: And then they kiss.
- 9:52KARA: And then they kiss.
- 9:53DANI: And then they kiss.
- 9:54KARA: And I am sick to my stomach.
- 9:56DANI: Yeah, it's gross.
- 9:57Also, yeah, they're there early, but someone could still see them.
- 10:01Like, they're kissing in the middle of the kitchen.
- 10:03They're not being very… Daphne's, like, not worried.
- 10:06KARA: She doesn't understand.
- 10:07Again, no one is saying, "crime."
- 10:09DANI: Crime.
- 10:10And then we're with Bay and Zarra.
- 10:13KARA: Exterior driveway.
- 10:14DANI: Yeah, and they are bombing The Thing.
- 10:16KARA: They are bombing The Thing.
- 10:18Zarra, a white woman, but Latina on the show, suggests
- 10:21that Bay get dreads like her.
- 10:24DANI: Yeah.
- 10:24KARA: And Bay's like, "So cool, would love to do that."
- 10:27DANI: Really good idea.
- 10:28KARA: John and Kathryn walk out to see them bombing The Thing.
- 10:32They're a little stressed out, and then they meet Zarra for the first time,
- 10:36and they're having a crash out 'cause they see Zarra's pelvic angel wing
- 10:40tattoos and her culturally appropriative dreads and they're like, "Oh, no."
- 10:44DANI: And then she makes a joke that she has kids.
- 10:47Like, she tries to be like, "Ah, I could be a better parent to my own
- 10:50kids." And everyone pauses 'cause no one knows if she's being serious or not.
- 10:53KARA: I thought she was being serious for a second.
- 10:55I didn't remember.
- 10:56DANI: Also, Bay's being so mean to her mom in this scene.
- 10:59She's like, "Oh yeah, my mom, she went to this lunch thing for parenting awards."
- 11:03It was just, like, acting like, "Oh, yeah, my mom's, like, stupid fucking
- 11:07side career thing was happening today." And then she's like, "By the
- 11:10way, look what I spray painted on my car," and it looks really ugly.
- 11:14KARA: And they're, like-
- 11:15DANI: It's really bad.
- 11:16KARA: I know.
- 11:16That they paid for.
- 11:17DANI: Yeah.
- 11:18Like, it is her car to do what she wants with, I guess, technically.
- 11:22KARA: But
- 11:22DANI: it just looks bad.
- 11:22But it, do something that looks good.
- 11:24It's 'cause I, I think Zarra's art is really ugly.
- 11:27KARA: Yeah.
- 11:28I agree.
- 11:29It's just, like, tentacles around the car.
- 11:30DANI: And
- 11:30KARA: this doesn't look
- 11:31DANI: like Bay's art.
- 11:32This looks like Zarra's design.
- 11:34KARA: Mm, so true.
- 11:35Zarra's taking over.
- 11:36DANI: And then the parents go inside, and Bay's like, "And by
- 11:39the way, I'm gonna get dreads."
- 11:40So she's just, like, really on one this whole episode.
- 11:44KARA: She is.
- 11:45DANI: It's hard to watch.
- 11:46KARA: She's kind of insufferable this episode.
- 11:48DANI: And Kathryn's freaking out.
- 11:49She's like, "She has wings down there."
- 11:51KARA: Yeah, she goes to the guest house, and she is-
- 11:53DANI: Yeah.
- 11:54KARA: Basically crying to Regina and Adrianna.
- 11:57DANI: Which I kind of liked.
- 11:58KARA: Me too.
- 11:59DANI: They're all, like, kind of trying to figure this out
- 12:01together, and I really liked that.
- 12:03KARA: Yeah.
- 12:03Adrianna goes, "Well, Regina was the Zarra back then."
- 12:07DANI: Yeah.
- 12:07KARA: And Regi- Regina's like-
- 12:08DANI: Regina goes- … "I wasn't that bad."
- 12:10KARA: And then Adrianna's like, "Please. Girl, please."
- 12:12DANI: Yeah, and then they're like, "You know what we did? We sent
- 12:15Regina to art lessons, and that helped. Maybe something like that
- 12:19for Bay." And what Kathryn hears is-
- 12:22KARA: Boy.
- 12:22DANI: Boy.
- 12:23Okay, so there's an undertone this entire episode.
- 12:26This is, I have to… Guys, Lizzy Weiss followed us on Instagram.
- 12:30KARA: She did.
- 12:31DANI: Which is huge, and I wanna DM her and ask if this was intentional.
- 12:34It probably, I don't think it was.
- 12:36I think I'm applying a 2026 reading to a 2012 episode.
- 12:40But there is a layer here where Zarra and Bay have this queer tension between them.
- 12:46KARA: Yes.
- 12:47DANI: And Kathryn is freaked out.
- 12:49Obviously she has other reasons to be freaked out, but then her response
- 12:54is to be like, "We need to replace Zarra with this cute boy." "This
- 12:58cute, harmless boy." And I feel like-
- 13:00KARA: We need to make Bay straight.
- 13:01DANI: Exactly.
- 13:02There's like a reading of this episode that is her parents freaking out at
- 13:07her showing a sense of otherness.
- 13:10KARA: Mm-hmm.
- 13:10DANI: And they're like, "Get her the normal straight boy."
- 13:14KARA: I 100% agree.
- 13:15DANI: ASAP.
- 13:15KARA: 100% agree.
- 13:16DANI: So I don't know.
- 13:17It was really interesting, this whole episode.
- 13:19That's what's happening for me this whole episode- that I'm seeing.
- 13:22KARA: Meanwhile, Scuba arrives at the kitchen, and he's chatting with Daphne.
- 13:27He's doing like a fake British accent, but she can't hear the
- 13:30accent because she's Deaf, guys.
- 13:32DANI: They have such a cute rapport.
- 13:33KARA: Yeah.
- 13:34DANI: I'm, I'm less bothered by Scuba.
- 13:35KARA: Well, he's gonna bother me later.
- 13:36DANI: He's about to bother me, but up until this point I've
- 13:39been less bothered by Scuba.
- 13:40KARA: And then he asks Daphne out.
- 13:41He's like, "We should go do something after our shift." And she's like,
- 13:45"Mm, the thing is I'm seeing someone." And he's like, "Right.
- 13:49So sorry.
- 13:50Forget I asked." Kathryn goes into Bay's bathroom to see Bay attempting
- 13:56to twist her beautiful curly brown hair into culturally appropriative dreads.
- 14:02And next to the bathroom mirror is- did you see this?
- 14:05Next to the bathroom mirror is a picture that looks like it was taken from a
- 14:09magazine of a Black woman with dreads.
- 14:11DANI: I did not clock the photo.
- 14:13KARA: Bay's using that as inspo.
- 14:16But then Kathryn goes, "Take those shitty dreads out because I invited Alex and his
- 14:21parents to dinner. Please be straight."
- 14:23DANI: Yeah, there's something there.
- 14:24She's literally trapping her into this hetero situation
- 14:29with this very normie boy.
- 14:30Alex is very sweet, and it's actually funny because earlier I was like,
- 14:34"That's a gay man." But in this episode, they're playing him much more straight.
- 14:38KARA: He's just, like, a normal-
- 14:40DANI: And, like, boring.
- 14:41KARA: Bookish boy.
- 14:42But
- 14:42DANI: he's sweet.
- 14:42Yeah, he's sweet.
- 14:43His parents are kooky as hell.
- 14:45KARA: Yes.
- 14:45DANI: Anyway, she's like, "Take the dreads out. A boy is coming for dinner."
- 14:50KARA: And
- 14:50DANI: Bay's like,
- 14:51KARA: "nice try."
- 14:52DANI: Yeah.
- 14:52KARA: She's like, "I know what you're doing, and it's not gonna work."
- 14:55DANI: Toby and Nikki are, like, having a musical moment.
- 14:58KARA: Yeah, they're jamming out at the church.
- 14:59DANI: And she makes a joke about how she likes country music.
- 15:02Okay, fork found in kitchen.
- 15:04She's like, "Wow, so the Christian you could handle, but not the country?"
- 15:08All right, no one's surprised, chica.
- 15:10KARA: No.
- 15:10Also, Battle of the Bands is coming up.
- 15:12DANI: Yeah.
- 15:12KARA: What if we wrote a few songs together, and Toby goes, "I
- 15:15don't know, I have band trauma."
- 15:17DANI: He does have band trauma.
- 15:18This episode is about Toby working through his band trauma 'cause he realizes it's
- 15:21not as bad as other people's trauma.
- 15:23And then at the end of this little exchange, it's just important to
- 15:26note that they exchange, like, an awkward but flirty handshake.
- 15:29KARA: Yes.
- 15:30DANI: The two of them, for some reason, at the end.
- 15:32Everyone's working in the kitchen back at Maize, and Chef Jeff walks by Daphne
- 15:37and flicks the earring on her earlobe.
- 15:41KARA: In, like, a weird, flirtatious way.
- 15:42DANI: In, like, a weird, flirtatious way, and then walks past her and goes,
- 15:45"What?" Like, she gives him a look, and he's like, "What?" Everyone can see this.
- 15:49Everyone's looking, including Scuba.
- 15:51KARA: Including Scuba.
- 15:52DANI: Because they are in an open kitchen, and that is a teenager who he is
- 15:55touching the ear of while you are at work.
- 15:59Even if she was of age, he is- Can you- Can you imagine on The Bear,
- 16:04you know how on The Bear everyone ships Jeremy Allen White and Ayo-
- 16:08KARA: Yeah.
- 16:08DANI: Together?
- 16:09Can you imagine if he started acting like that towards Ayo in that kitchen?
- 16:13That's the vibe that-
- 16:14KARA: That'd
- 16:14DANI: be crazy.
- 16:14This show was trying to capture.
- 16:16Okay, wait.
- 16:17I don't remember who Kathryn's talking to.
- 16:19Maybe it's John being like, "Why are we having these people over?"
- 16:22Kathryn says, "We're giving her a more attractive option than that girl."
- 16:27KARA: Yes.
- 16:28That's right.
- 16:28DANI: Crazy sentence to say if they're just, like, talking about, you know?
- 16:32Like, the Kennishes are having gay panic.
- 16:34KARA: They are.
- 16:35DANI: A more attractive option than that, and she says it like, "Than
- 16:38that girl." Like, she spits girl.
- 16:40KARA: I know.
- 16:41DANI: Yeah.
- 16:41KARA: She's terrified.
- 16:42Huh.
- 16:43Speaking of that attractive girl, Zarra leaves an art store.
- 16:47DANI: Yeah.
- 16:47KARA: Which is called Da Vinci's Paintbrush.
- 16:49Great name.
- 16:50She's in front of Bay's car, and then she's- it's a convertible,
- 16:53so Zarra's able to reach in and start rummaging through it.
- 16:57DANI: Yeah.
- 16:57KARA: Daphne is on a bike, I guess?
- 16:59Daphne rides a bike.
- 17:01Again, looks-
- 17:01DANI: What
- 17:01KARA: happened to Daphne's car?
- 17:01Yeah, what happened to her Volvo?
- 17:04She's helping the environment.
- 17:05DANI: I guess?
- 17:07Anyway, she's riding her bike.
- 17:09KARA: She stops.
- 17:09DANI: Maybe they just wanna emphasize how childlike she is.
- 17:12KARA: She's wearing, like-
- 17:14DANI: A pink helmet.
- 17:14KARA: A pink floral helmet.
- 17:16She looks five.
- 17:17DANI: I did just buy a very similar helmet for roller skating, but that's okay.
- 17:21I don't look five otherwise.
- 17:23KARA: No, you don't.
- 17:24DANI: So it's fine.
- 17:25KARA: She sees Zarra rummaging through the car, and she goes, "Hey, back off.
- 17:29I know the owner of this car." And Zarra goes, "Girl, me too."
- 17:32But then Bay pops in.
- 17:34She's coming with, like- coffee.
- 17:36And she's like, "Hey, girls. Daphne, I see you've met Zarra." And Zarra looks jumpy.
- 17:42DANI: Yeah, Zarra looks really jumpy.
- 17:43I understand her being like, "Weird, are you being racist or…"
- 17:47But it's like, well, no, 'cause you're a strange person rummaging.
- 17:52Daphne's never seen you before.
- 17:53KARA: Yes.
- 17:54I agree.
- 17:54DANI: I think Daphne's in the right to be like, "What are you doing?"
- 17:57KARA: Why are you looking through my sister's car?
- 17:59DANI: Yeah.
- 18:00And Zarra's really rude to Daphne.
- 18:02KARA: She is.
- 18:02DANI: Zarra just doesn't, won't even like look in her eyes.
- 18:05It's very odd.
- 18:06KARA: And Daphne catches on, like the vibes are weird.
- 18:09DANI: And Bay's like, "Have fun at work." Bay does not read the room.
- 18:12KARA: No.
- 18:12DANI: And then Daphne's at work.
- 18:14KARA: Yeah, she biked to work.
- 18:16DANI: And Scuba like completely fucks up the shrimp.
- 18:19KARA: He, like, was supposed to poach the shrimp, and he completely overcooked
- 18:23it, and it's all the shrimp the kitchen has, and it's, they're using the
- 18:27shrimp for like 12 different dishes.
- 18:28DANI: Yeah.
- 18:29KARA: And he's like, "That's fu- I'm fucked."
- 18:31DANI: Yeah, like, "I'm gonna get fired, unless Daphne, you take the fall for me."
- 18:36KARA: Yeah, take the bullet.
- 18:37DANI: And Daphne's like, "What the fuck?
- 18:38I didn't cook the shrimp." And he's like, "Yeah, but your
- 18:40boyfriend's not gonna fire you."
- 18:42KARA: Yeah.
- 18:43DANI: And it seems a little threatening, and so Daphne's like, "Uh-oh."
- 18:47But then Daphne also likes Scuba and cares about him.
- 18:50KARA: Yeah.
- 18:50DANI: So there's that element, too.
- 18:52Like, she doesn't want him to get fired.
- 18:54KARA: Scuba, instead of throwing away the shrimp, decides to put it in a
- 18:57bowl and wrap it in Saran Wrap for Chef Jeff to then find and then yell.
- 19:03DANI: Yeah.
- 19:04KARA: Usually when you mess up something, put it in compost, guys, or throw it away.
- 19:08DANI: I hon- if I was Scuba and I was scared to tell him, I'd throw it
- 19:11away and then be like, "What shrimp? I didn't find any shrimp back there."
- 19:14KARA: Well, Chef Jeff would know.
- 19:15He seems very on top of it.
- 19:16DANI: Yeah, but he knows no matter what.
- 19:18None of Scuba's lies are gonna work.
- 19:19KARA: Well, anyway, Chef Jeff finds a bowl of overcooked
- 19:23shrimp, starts yelling at Scuba.
- 19:24DANI: Yeah.
- 19:25KARA: And then Daphne.
- 19:26DANI: He's yelling.
- 19:27KARA: Takes the fall.
- 19:28DANI: He's yelling at Scuba, and Daphne pipes up from the back like,
- 19:30"He didn't do it. It was me." And-
- 19:33KARA: He, like, fake admonishes her in front of everyone.
- 19:36Like, "Wow, you don't know how to cook shrimp?"
- 19:39DANI: Yeah.
- 19:39KARA: "How stupid are you?"
- 19:40DANI: Yeah.
- 19:40He, like, definitely goes easy on her, and also you can tell,
- 19:44like, he doesn't believe her.
- 19:45No one in the kitchen believes her.
- 19:47KARA: No, because everyone else knows whose job is whose.
- 19:51DANI: Yeah.
- 19:51KARA: That's how a kitchen works.
- 19:52DANI: Right.
- 19:53KARA: And also, when Scuba-
- 19:53DANI: And also, Daphne's like, "Yeah, he asked me to do it, and I messed it
- 19:57up." And it's like, okay, well, that was Scuba's one job, so if he asked you to
- 20:01do it, that's still Scuba fucking up.
- 20:03KARA: I agree.
- 20:03DANI: 'Cause why isn't Scuba doing his one job?
- 20:05KARA: Yeah.
- 20:06DANI: So no matter what, Scuba still looks bad.
- 20:08Like, Daphne lying and taking the fall doesn't make him look better, actually.
- 20:12KARA: No, not at all.
- 20:12DANI: It just makes him look worse in a new way.
- 20:15KARA: Yeah.
- 20:15I can't believe Patrick is back.
- 20:17DANI: Patrick is back.
- 20:19I was like, what the hell?
- 20:21KARA: This is, this will be his last episode.
- 20:23DANI: Okay.
- 20:23KARA: I'm pretty sure.
- 20:24DANI: I don't know, 'cause they didn't really have, like, a blowout fight.
- 20:29KARA: He, but he walks away at the end.
- 20:30DANI: I kinda feel like he's gonna turn Regina in to, like… or
- 20:33turn Angelo in for, like, fraud.
- 20:36KARA: Oh my God, yeah.
- 20:37DANI: He, like, has a real chip on his shoulder over Angelo, which I get.
- 20:41He's justified.
- 20:42Although, I think as adults, I would imagine, they've been dating for what?
- 20:46A couple of months.
- 20:47KARA: Yeah.
- 20:48DANI: I'm sure I'd feel differently if I was in this situation, but I think to be
- 20:51dating for a couple of months and then come into what is clearly a long-running
- 20:57history with some other man, I get him being jealous, but him being like, "I want
- 21:03you to, like, give that all up for me."
- 21:05KARA: Yeah, it's not gonna work.
- 21:07DANI: Like, I think you have to just be like, "Okay, I'm either in this and
- 21:10I have to accept that it's gonna be a little bit weird, but clearly she must
- 21:13still like me if she's bothering to keep me around, or I'm completely out."
- 21:19KARA: Yeah.
- 21:19DANI: But him being like, "I'm in it, but I don't wanna listen to you talk
- 21:23on the phone with your fake husband, who's also the father of your child."
- 21:27KARA: Right.
- 21:28DANI: Is a little bit crazy.
- 21:30KARA: Yeah.
- 21:30DANI: I don't know.
- 21:31I just, I'm-
- 21:32KARA: I agree.
- 21:33DANI: I don't really have any empathy for Patrick.
- 21:35You're a grown adult.
- 21:35You knew what you were getting into.
- 21:37KARA: Yeah.
- 21:38Anyways, the only point of this scene is that Regina in her stupid wrist
- 21:42brace invites him to dinner with the Kennishes and Alex's family.
- 21:45DANI: Yes, and the way that she phrases it.
- 21:48KARA: Go on.
- 21:49DANI: Is so fucked up.
- 21:50KARA: Tell me.
- 21:51DANI: She's like, "I'm having dinner tonight with the Kennishes.
- 21:54Like, do you wanna come?" And he asks, "Will Daphne be there?" And she says,
- 21:58"No, just me." And he says, "Dinner with you and the Kennishes with no kids?
- 22:03That'll be a first." She's like, "I know."
- 22:05KARA: Bay's there.
- 22:06DANI: Bay's gonna be there.
- 22:07Her daughter is going to be there.
- 22:09KARA: Is that what she says?
- 22:10DANI: Yes.
- 22:11KARA: Oh.
- 22:11DANI: She's fully like, "It'll just be us, like no kids."
- 22:15KARA: No, Bay and Alex are there, who are kids.
- 22:16DANI: Bay and Alex are there.
- 22:18KARA: Who are kids.
- 22:18DANI: Her daughter and then her daughter's forced-upon-her boyfriend.
- 22:22KARA: Yes.
- 22:23Agree.
- 22:23DANI: So it's just like Regina, tap in a little.
- 22:26KARA: I know.
- 22:26She really has blinders whenever she's with a guy.
- 22:29DANI: It's a real problem for her.
- 22:30KARA: Yeah.
- 22:30Patrick does come to the guest house for dinner.
- 22:32DANI: He comes to the guest house for dinner, and the fact that at
- 22:35some point the writers decided it was going to be a long-running joke
- 22:38to comment on the fact that Regina hates Indian food is so random to me.
- 22:42KARA: 'Cause Adrianna doesn't stay.
- 22:44She's like, "I'm going out for Indian food with my friend."
- 22:46DANI: And Patrick's like, "Regina hates Indian food."
- 22:49KARA: And Adrianna's like, "I know. That's why I'm going
- 22:51without her." I love Indian food.
- 22:53DANI: So they're having that random inside joke, whatever,
- 22:57and then Regina's phone rings.
- 22:58KARA: She asks-
- 22:59DANI: She's right there.
- 23:00She's just putting in an earring.
- 23:01And-
- 23:02KARA: It takes two seconds.
- 23:03DANI: The phone is right next to her.
- 23:05KARA: But she asks Patrick to pick it up.
- 23:06DANI: She asks Patrick to pick it up and hand it to her.
- 23:10KARA: Patrick picks up the phone, sees that it's Angelo, and he's like,
- 23:13"I'm not answering that. Here you go, Regina." Regina answers it, and it's
- 23:16Angelo speaking from Lake Michigan.
- 23:18Remember, he's working there, and he has some stupid question.
- 23:21DANI: Yeah, he can't remember-
- 23:24KARA: The name of
- 23:24DANI: the person he's working for.
- 23:24The name of the person he's working for because he's so bad with names.
- 23:29And so Regina admonishes him for this.
- 23:33KARA: But she's also giggling.
- 23:34DANI: But she's also giggling and being very flirty, and then gets
- 23:37off the phone and is like, "He's just really bad with names." Like,
- 23:41starts talking to Patrick about it.
- 23:43KARA: Yeah, and Patrick is clearly uncomfortable.
- 23:45DANI: This is, as much as I'm like, "I don't have empathy for Patrick. Get out of
- 23:49this situation," this is insane of Regina.
- 23:52KARA: That is insane.
- 23:53DANI: To be like, they, she's actively flirty.
- 23:55She loves Angelo.
- 23:57Just be with Angelo.
- 23:58You guys are literally married.
- 23:59KARA: I know.
- 24:00DANI: It's pissing me off.
- 24:01KARA: It is.
- 24:02It's dinner time.
- 24:02DANI: Yeah, and Alex and his parents are there.
- 24:05KARA: And the parents are like, "Did you know our children are
- 24:08the greatest people in the world?"
- 24:10DANI: At one point they genuinely say, "Our children are
- 24:12fantastic at standardized tests."
- 24:15KARA: Yeah.
- 24:15DANI: They're, like, so bragging about their kids, it's making John
- 24:19and Kathryn feel like shit 'cause their kids are nightmares right now.
- 24:23KARA: And also they're talking about their kids getting ready for college.
- 24:26DANI: Yeah.
- 24:26KARA: They're doing all this volunteer work.
- 24:27DANI: Yeah.
- 24:28KARA: They're-
- 24:28DANI: They're playing silly sports.
- 24:30KARA: Yeah, one's fencing.
- 24:31DANI: Yeah, one's doing fencing, and they're like, "Colleges
- 24:34love those niche sports." Okay.
- 24:36KARA: Yeah, and John and Kathryn I think are like, "College?
- 24:39Shit, didn't really think about that."
- 24:40DANI: Didn't really think about that.
- 24:42KARA: Which is crazy to me.
- 24:43I-
- 24:43DANI: It's totally-
- 24:43KARA: Growing up in Mission Hills?
- 24:45DANI: I know.
- 24:46KARA: With all these WASPy parents who-
- 24:48DANI: They've been busy.
- 24:49I think they probably were thinking about it, and then they found
- 24:52out their daughters got switched at birth, and they were like,
- 24:54"Okay, we're a little busy now."
- 24:56KARA: Yeah.
- 24:56Alex shows up.
- 24:57He's thrilled to see Bay.
- 24:58DANI: Yeah.
- 24:59He's like, "I wanted an exc- I've been trying to come up with an excuse to see
- 25:02you, and now this." And she's like, "Whoa.
- 25:04I did not ask you to be here." I feel really bad for Alex.
- 25:07KARA: I know.
- 25:08DANI: He's really sweet.
- 25:09KARA: He's a sweet guy.
- 25:10DANI: He's a sweetheart, and-
- 25:11KARA: And she's gonna rope him into all these-
- 25:13DANI: Yeah.
- 25:13KARA: Activities later on.
- 25:14DANI: Bay is trouble.
- 25:16KARA: I know.
- 25:17DANI: I am kind of like, he's such a catch.
- 25:20Why is he into her?
- 25:21He can't find another girl to date?
- 25:24Like a better girl- a less messy girl to date?
- 25:27KARA: Guess not.
- 25:28DANI: I know that's how teenagers work, but, like, he
- 25:30is so normie and, like, chill.
- 25:32And cute.
- 25:32He's a cutie.
- 25:33KARA: Yeah.
- 25:34I agree.
- 25:35DANI: Whatever.
- 25:35KARA: I don't know.
- 25:36DANI: Toby and Nikki are at the music shop.
- 25:38KARA: Yeah, they're looking at guitars.
- 25:39DANI: They're looking at guitars.
- 25:40The guy working at the music shop is being sexist, and Nikki's like, "Let me see
- 25:44that one," and it's, like, a fancy guitar.
- 25:46And he's like, "This might be a little heavy for you." And then
- 25:48she puts it on, and her body double absolutely shreds on the guitar.
- 25:52KARA: Is it her body double?
- 25:52DANI: Yes.
- 25:53They cut… It's, like, her holding the guitar, and then
- 25:55they cut to a much larger woman.
- 25:58They aren't showing her head.
- 26:00She's got much bigger hands.
- 26:01She's absolutely shredding, and then they cut back to her.
- 26:04KARA: That's
- 26:04DANI: so funny.
- 26:04It's so clearly a body double.
- 26:06KARA: I'm really bad with hearing, obviously, but I knew
- 26:08she was good because the captions said, "plays impressive chord."
- 26:12DANI: Yeah.
- 26:12I mean, I'm saying contextually it's impressive, 'cause everyone
- 26:16goes, "Whoa." But I couldn't tell you if it was actually anything.
- 26:20KARA: Sure.
- 26:21DANI: And Toby's like, "Wow, I think she can handle it,
- 26:23man." And it's funny, whatever.
- 26:25And then-
- 26:27KARA: She gets a call.
- 26:27DANI: Nikki gets a phone call, and she's like, "Sorry, it's my boyfriend."
- 26:30Record scratch.
- 26:31KARA: She hangs up, and she's like, "Yeah, sorry, that's my boyfriend.
- 26:34We're long distance, though."
- 26:36DANI: Yeah.
- 26:36She's like, "Long distance sucks." And he's like, "Uh." And she's
- 26:40like, "Look, I know this is awkward.
- 26:41You clearly thought something was happening.
- 26:43I didn't wanna say anything, 'cause I didn't wanna be presumptuous and assume
- 26:47that you thought something was happening.
- 26:49But let's push past this awkward moment by going into the back room of this music
- 26:54shop, where I'm gonna play you a song that I wrote." So she's singing this
- 26:57song in the back room quietly to him.
- 27:01It's, like, a soft acoustic song.
- 27:02It kinda sounds like a song about someone breaking her heart.
- 27:06KARA: Yes.
- 27:06DANI: Toby's like, "Wow, I hope whoever broke your heart got to hear that."
- 27:11And she's like, "Oh, it's about the man that shot and killed my father."
- 27:15KARA: They never found him.
- 27:15DANI: They never found him, and it was just, like, some random guy, according to
- 27:19the police, who thought that my dad was someone else, and he was just sitting in
- 27:22a parking lot at a mall and got murdered.
- 27:25KARA: And after that, I started doing drugs and stopped eating,
- 27:28but then I learned to let go of my anger, and now I'm normal again.
- 27:31DANI: So that's sort of what Nikki's got going on, and
- 27:34Toby's like, "Holy shit. Um-"
- 27:36KARA: "Have you considered therapy?"
- 27:37DANI: Yeah.
- 27:38He's like- … "What the fuck? Also, I guess my shit is fine
- 27:41and normal and whatever."
- 27:42KARA: Then he goes to Emmett's house.
- 27:44DANI: Yeah.
- 27:44So Toby's like- I can handle my own shit, turns out.
- 27:48Like, I need to let my anger go if Nikki can let her anger go.
- 27:52KARA: I can also compartmentalize, guys.
- 27:54DANI: Yeah.
- 27:54So he shows up, this is at the very end of the episode, he
- 27:58shows up to Emmett's house.
- 27:59KARA: Yes.
- 28:00DANI: And did you think this was so, from Emmett's point of view, imagine
- 28:05you are chilling in your bed, listening to music, having a grand old time,
- 28:10relaxed as fuck, shoes on the bed.
- 28:12And the last time you saw Toby pushed you to the ground.
- 28:16I was like, Emmett must think he's about to die.
- 28:19Toby's a rich kid from Mission Hills.
- 28:21John Kennish absolutely has guns in the house.
- 28:23We know that.
- 28:24KARA: Yeah.
- 28:25Emmett's like, "This is my last day on Earth."
- 28:26DANI: Toby absolutely could have snapped, got a gun, showed up
- 28:31at his house, and shot him in his own bed, and that's what I-
- 28:34KARA: But Toby's like, "I'm not gonna be the man that killed Nikki's father."
- 28:37DANI: Exactly.
- 28:37I'm gonna-
- 28:37KARA: I'm letting go of my anger.
- 28:38DANI: Yeah, can you imagine Toby's inspired by that story in
- 28:41a completely different direction?
- 28:42He's like, "Oh my God."
- 28:43KARA: Wait, I'm not gonna shoot him.
- 28:44DANI: Random gun violence.
- 28:46No.
- 28:46So he's like, "I want to start the band up again." And he's signing
- 28:53very basically, but he is signing.
- 28:55KARA: He's signing.
- 28:55DANI: Which is an important improvement.
- 28:57And Emmett's like, "Guitar Face?" And Toby's like, "No.
- 29:00New band, new sound, new start." And Emmett's like, "I'm in."
- 29:05KARA: And they start talking about band names.
- 29:07DANI: Okay.
- 29:07Oh my God.
- 29:08KARA: And one of the band names they say is Third World Bus Plunge.
- 29:12So offensive.
- 29:14DANI: Yeah, and then Emmett says, "It's not PC, but it'll get attention."
- 29:18Did you guys learn nothing from naming your band Free Beer for an afternoon?
- 29:22Come on.
- 29:22KARA: Right.
- 29:23Everyone was mad at you.
- 29:24DANI: Yeah.
- 29:24Let's not do that again.
- 29:25And that is how the episode ends, which is, like, I thought really weird, so
- 29:29that's not how our episode's gonna end.
- 29:30We just wrapped that storyline up for you guys ahead of time.
- 29:32KARA: Yeah, that B plot.
- 29:33DANI: It was very odd.
- 29:35So much was going on, and then they ended on, like, panning up out
- 29:39of Emmett's house, where Toby and Emmett are, like, having a little ki.
- 29:42KARA: Yeah.
- 29:43DANI: Very strange.
- 29:44Okay.
- 29:45Back at dinner.
- 29:46KARA: Yes, back at dinner.
- 29:47Alex's-
- 29:47DANI: Alex's parents are like, "How long have you guys been married?" And
- 29:51Regina lies and says, "Three months." And Patrick's very upset about this.
- 29:55KARA: Yes.
- 29:56Bay then gets a blocked call, and it's Zarra at the county jail.
- 30:00She got jumped by Smak and his buddies and she needs $1,500 in bail to get out.
- 30:06DANI: Yeah, because she's like, "You gotta get me out of here. Things are crazy
- 30:10in here. Like, I'm not safe in here."
- 30:12KARA: Doesn't say what she was arrested for.
- 30:14Just says she got jumped.
- 30:15DANI: Yeah.
- 30:16KARA: And Bay tries to ask, and Zarra's like, "Whatever. Just get me out of
- 30:19here. You have to get me out of here."
- 30:20DANI: Yeah.
- 30:21So Bay runs back in in the middle of dinner and is like, "Alex, let's go
- 30:25get gelato from that place we like, and we can bring some back for everyone."
- 30:29And Alex thankfully reads the room and is like, "Okay, I'm gonna go."
- 30:32KARA: Yeah.
- 30:33DANI: And they just kinda take off in the middle of dinner.
- 30:35KARA: And John and Kathryn are thrilled, 'cause, like,
- 30:36great, she goes out with a boy.
- 30:37DANI: Yeah.
- 30:38They're fine- yeah, Kathryn's like, "Whatever. As long as she's
- 30:40straight, I don't, I don't care."
- 30:42KARA: Yeah.
- 30:42DANI: Whatever she's doing is fine as long as it's with a straight man.
- 30:45And this frees the parents up to have a very bizarre evening, because Alex's
- 30:51parents are kooky as hell, and the second their child leaves, Kathryn
- 30:56and John go into the kitchen and they're cutting the cheesecake that
- 30:59Kathryn so nicely prepped for dessert.
- 31:01KARA: Delicious.
- 31:01DANI: That Bay and Alex are abandoning.
- 31:03And her and John are freaking out.
- 31:05They're like, "Oh my God."
- 31:06KARA: College.
- 31:07DANI: "Our kids suck. They're not gonna get into college. Like, remember Toby
- 31:10played lacrosse, and then he quit, and, like, Bay doesn't do anything but illegal
- 31:13stuff," and, like, all this stuff.
- 31:15Whatever.
- 31:15Alex's mom comes in and is like, "Can we put some music on?"
- 31:18And they're like, "Oh, sure.
- 31:19What did you have in mind?" And she's like, "Well, I teach salsa, and I would
- 31:22like to teach everyone salsa now."
- 31:24KARA: Come on, white woman.
- 31:25DANI: She's really
- 31:26… KARA: She, like, had three glasses of wine or something.
- 31:28DANI: Yeah.
- 31:29KARA: She's ready to go.
- 31:29DANI: She's ready to go.
- 31:30I kind of love her.
- 31:31KARA: Me too.
- 31:32DANI: She was just like, "This party's weird. Let's make it weirder." And so then
- 31:36we get 10 minutes of the Kennishes and Alex's parents and Regina and Patrick-
- 31:42KARA: Dancing.
- 31:42DANI: Dancing.
- 31:43KARA: And Patrick notices Regina is dancing very well.
- 31:47First of all, 'cause Constance Marie actually is a dancer.
- 31:50DANI: Yeah.
- 31:50KARA: But then Regina's character is like, "Well, I had some
- 31:53dance lessons in the past."
- 31:54DANI: And this upsets Patrick very much.
- 31:57KARA: Well, he deduces immediately that she's had dance lessons with Angelo.
- 32:00DANI: And Alex's mom keeps saying, "If you're good at salsa, you're
- 32:04good at something else, too." Like, she's being so weird.
- 32:07KARA: And Patrick's like, "Well, great. Now I'm thinking about you guys fucking."
- 32:10DANI: Yeah.
- 32:11Okay.
- 32:12Sorry you can't handle the heat, Patrick.
- 32:14KARA: Yeah.
- 32:14DANI: Get out of there, then.
- 32:16John cannot move his hips at all.
- 32:18They're salsa dancing.
- 32:19But him and Kathryn are really cute together.
- 32:22Like, he's, he can't dance, but he's not being like, "Ah, I'm gonna sit
- 32:26out." Kathryn's like, "Stand in the center and I'll move around you."
- 32:29And John's like, "Okay." And he starts, like, he's being v- they're, they're
- 32:33really cute together this episode.
- 32:33KARA: It's so cute.
- 32:34He, like, puts his hands up and starts, like, waving his arms-
- 32:36DANI: Yeah.
- 32:36KARA: And then Kathryn dances around him.
- 32:38DANI: Patrick makes a joke earlier in the evening that, like, maybe he and Regina
- 32:41are gonna get lucky tonight, and they definitely are not, but John and Kathryn
- 32:44are definitely getting it on later.
- 32:46KARA: Absolutely.
- 32:47It was really cute.
- 32:48But Patrick leaves the dance after finding out, after thinking
- 32:52about Regina and Angelo fucking.
- 32:53He's like-
- 32:54DANI: Yeah.
- 32:54KARA: "This marriage is more real than you think it is."
- 32:57DANI: Yeah.
- 32:57And he exits the scene.
- 32:59And that's when you think he's gone forever.
- 33:00KARA: I think that's it.
- 33:02DANI: I don't wanna say that 'cause I feel like there's been, like, three times
- 33:05so far I've been like, "Bye, Patrick," and then he fucking shows up again.
- 33:08So-
- 33:08KARA: Yeah, you're right.
- 33:09We all-
- 33:10DANI: I feel like he's gonna keep coming around.
- 33:12KARA: Yeah, we don't know.
- 33:13Bay is trying to get money from the ATM.
- 33:15DANI: And she is learning for the first time that ATMs have caps on
- 33:19how much money you can get out.
- 33:20KARA: Is it 300?
- 33:21DANI: Mine is.
- 33:22KARA: Yeah, I guess you're right.
- 33:24She's like, "I can only get 300. Alex, could I have money?" And Alex
- 33:27is like, "Are you kidding me? No."
- 33:29DANI: She managed to drive him over to this ATM without
- 33:33telling him what was happening.
- 33:34KARA: Yeah, he's just being lugged around.
- 33:36He doesn't know what's happening.
- 33:36DANI: He doesn't know.
- 33:37So then finally she gets a call from 8-Ball.
- 33:408-Ball.
- 33:40Who's back to school special ass is like, "You gotta get her outta there, man.
- 33:45You just gotta figure it out and get her out." He's, like, on the verge of tears.
- 33:49She's like, "Fuck, okay." Bay is really freaked out.
- 33:52She looks so small and little-
- 33:53KARA: I know.
- 33:53DANI: At the ATM.
- 33:54She's very scared.
- 33:55And then Alex is finally like, "Okay, what is happening here?" And Bay's like, "My
- 33:59friend is in jail." And he's like, "Okay.
- 34:01Well, you could've led with that." Like, I, he's more cooperative
- 34:05once he's like, "Okay, there's a real situation happening here."
- 34:08KARA: And Bay's idea now is to go to the car wash.
- 34:11Alex has no idea why they're going to the car wash.
- 34:13DANI: Why is he not asking follow-up questions?
- 34:15He's-
- 34:16KARA: So odd.
- 34:17DANI: He is cute and, like, normie.
- 34:19He's kind of NPC.
- 34:20Like, he doesn't really have anything going on for him.
- 34:24KARA: They head to the car wash to, quote, "borrow money."
- 34:27DANI: Yeah.
- 34:27KARA: From the safe.
- 34:28And they walk into the office and who is there but Travis.
- 34:32DANI: Travis.
- 34:32KARA: Who's sleeping on the couch in the office.
- 34:35DANI: Yeah.
- 34:36And he's like- Bay is very up front with him.
- 34:39She's like, "I need to take money out of the safe. I'm gonna replace it
- 34:42tomorrow. My friend is in trouble."
- 34:44KARA: Mm-hmm.
- 34:44DANI: And Travis knows the combination.
- 34:47KARA: Well, I like that Bay-
- 34:48DANI: Which Bay doesn't.
- 34:49So she just showed up without a plan.
- 34:51Thank God Travis was there.
- 34:53KARA: I guess.
- 34:53DANI: Yeah.
- 34:54KARA: Yeah.
- 34:54Maybe she was gonna, like, look around the office for the code.
- 34:56DANI: Yeah.
- 34:56And Travis at first is like, "Well, you're the boss's daughter, like what
- 35:00am I supposed to do in this situation?"
- 35:02And Bay looks at him, his setup there, and says, "I'm not gonna tell
- 35:06my dad you're sleeping here. Even if you don't help me, I'm not gonna
- 35:09snitch on you." Which is really nice.
- 35:11KARA: I know.
- 35:11DANI: She's frantic, but she's not an asshole.
- 35:13KARA: No.
- 35:14DANI: She's like, "It's none of my business if you're- why you're
- 35:16sleeping here." But it is our business.
- 35:18Do we think Travis is okay?
- 35:19KARA: I just think he's so unhappy at home.
- 35:21DANI: Yeah.
- 35:22We're gonna … I'm sure we'll find out what's going on, but-
- 35:24KARA: Get Regina and Angelo out of the guest house, put Travis in there.
- 35:28DANI: Literally.
- 35:29KARA: Right.
- 35:29DANI: Literally.
- 35:30So Travis is like, "Okay, I will help you."
- 35:33KARA: He opens the safe.
- 35:34DANI: He opens the safe.
- 35:35He signs to Bay, after he gives her the money, he says like,
- 35:39"This is my responsibility."
- 35:41KARA: Yeah.
- 35:41DANI: Like, "I'm, I'm responsible."
- 35:43KARA: Mm-hmm.
- 35:43DANI: But the script and captions say, "This is my ass on the line."
- 35:47KARA: Yes, I did notice that.
- 35:49And Bay's like, "Me too."
- 35:50DANI: But, like, not as much.
- 35:51KARA: No, 'cause she's the daughter.
- 35:53DANI: She's the daughter, and also she didn't know the combination.
- 35:55KARA: True.
- 35:56DANI: So she gets the money.
- 35:58KARA: Yeah.
- 35:58DANI: Back at the kitchen.
- 35:59KARA: Chef Jeff pulls Daphne aside and says, "That yelling
- 36:03at you, that was all for show."
- 36:04DANI: He pulls her into the freezer with the door open and
- 36:08is like, "I'm really mad at you.
- 36:10I'm sorry." And she's like, "I understand, Chef." And-
- 36:16KARA: Also, I will be firing Scuba, 'cause I know he fucked up the shrimp and
- 36:19then made you take the bullet for him.
- 36:21DANI: Yeah, which, not to agree with Chef Jeff, but, like, I'm just… If I
- 36:25were him, that's what I would do as well.
- 36:27KARA: Making the mistake, fine, but then making the high schooler
- 36:31take the blame for it, that's-
- 36:33DANI: Yeah.
- 36:33KARA: That's not cool.
- 36:34So he says to Scuba, "This is your last shift. Goodbye." And
- 36:38Scuba immediately retaliates.
- 36:40DANI: He basically just says, like, "Well, that's your girlfriend."
- 36:43KARA: Loudly.
- 36:44DANI: Yeah.
- 36:45"You're just mad because your girlfriend tried to help me out."
- 36:49KARA: Yeah, and he yells.
- 36:51DANI: He yells, "Girlfriend," so then everyone in the kitchen looks over.
- 36:53And then Jeff is like, "You're done. Get out of here."
- 36:57KARA: Everyone should be like-
- 36:58DANI: Right.
- 36:58KARA: "Isn't she a minor?"
- 36:59DANI: No, exactly.
- 37:00So then everyone is kind of looking around, like, shiftily.
- 37:03And then after the shift, Daphne stays behind, and she's, she's,
- 37:08like, eating a piece of pie in the closed dining room, which is,
- 37:11like, who's gonna wash that dish?
- 37:13KARA: She
- 37:13DANI: is.
- 37:13Like, the kitchen's closed.
- 37:14I guess her, yeah.
- 37:14But she's in her regular clothes again, and Jeff comes out, and he's like, "Oh,
- 37:18you're still here?" And she's like, "Yeah.
- 37:20I'm freaked out, 'cause everyone now is going to think that I'm only employed
- 37:25here 'cause I'm your girlfriend," which it's like, you're not his girlfriend.
- 37:27Like, they haven't had that talk yet.
- 37:29You're definitely-
- 37:30KARA: No,
- 37:30DANI: they have not
- 37:31. Not his girlfriend.
- 37:32You definitely are a teenager, so they are not going to be… She's like, "I
- 37:35feel like everyone's gonna be talking about how I got this job because I'm
- 37:38your girlfriend." And it's like, no, they're gonna be talking about the
- 37:41fact that their boss is dating a minor.
- 37:44KARA: That is a crime.
- 37:45DANI: Yeah.
- 37:45KARA: Oh, my boss is-
- 37:46DANI: She's like, "I just feel like a bimbo." And it's like, you mean a victim?
- 37:50KARA: But Chef Jeff is like, "No, you, I didn't even want you
- 37:53here. You proved yourself to me."
- 37:55DANI: Right.
- 37:55He's like, "No one else- As long as you know that you deserve this job, it doesn't
- 37:59even matter what other people think."
- 38:00And it's like, well, it matters-
- 38:01KARA: It does.
- 38:02DANI: It does … what other people say to the authorities.
- 38:04KARA: It really does, guys.
- 38:06DANI: So yeah, that's bad, but it seems like they're not actually that
- 38:09worried about it, like they're gonna keep dating/kissing in the kitchen.
- 38:14KARA: The very last scene, Bay brings bail money to the precinct.
- 38:17She's waiting outside with Alex for Zarra to come out.
- 38:20Zarra leaves the jail, along with one other guy, Mouse, who Bay also bailed
- 38:27out but Zarra failed to mention.
- 38:29DANI: Yeah, Zarra did not mention that Mouse was in there with her, and-
- 38:32KARA: She
- 38:33DANI: lies.
- 38:33Bay's like, "Oh, Mouse, you were in there, too? Like, how did you get out?"
- 38:36And he's like, "You bailed me out." So she really only needed $750 in bail money.
- 38:43KARA: Yes.
- 38:43DANI: And asked for double so that both of them could get out.
- 38:46KARA: And Zarra's like, "I told you."
- 38:48DANI: Yeah, Zarra's being really shifty.
- 38:50Her face is, like, beat up.
- 38:51KARA: Yeah.
- 38:52DANI: And she's like, "Also, Smak and his boys were in there with us."
- 38:55KARA: I don't know if that's true.
- 38:56DANI: I don't feel that… I mean, who knows, cops suck.
- 38:59But, like, to arrest a bunch of people for fighting and then put
- 39:03all the people that were fighting in the same holding cell feels insane.
- 39:06KARA: I agree.
- 39:07DANI: But you know what?
- 39:08I wouldn't put it past them, so maybe.
- 39:09But we see no proof-
- 39:11KARA: We
- 39:11DANI: see no proof.
- 39:11That they're in there.
- 39:12We don't really know what happened.
- 39:14And then Bay's like, "Great, I kinda need that money back now."
- 39:17And Zarra's like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:18No, like, when I go to my court date, you will get it back."
- 39:21Which is how bail money works.
- 39:23KARA: Yes.
- 39:23DANI: You have to show up to all your court dates, and then a judge can still
- 39:26be like, "No, we're keeping this," if you do anything wrong, basically.
- 39:29KARA: Yes.
- 39:30DANI: But in theory she'll get it back, but she won't get it back until after
- 39:34Zarra's legal situation is settled.
- 39:36KARA: I think Bay thought Zarra had the money, just not
- 39:38on her person at that moment.
- 39:40DANI: Right.
- 39:41KARA: So Bay's like, just go back to your trailer where you're homeless and-
- 39:44DANI: And get me the $1,500.
- 39:47KARA: And Zarra's like, "If I could, I would." I don't think she would, honestly.
- 39:51DANI: No, she definitely wouldn't.
- 39:52Yeah, and so Bay's sat on the curb freaking the fuck out.
- 39:55KARA: She's been had.
- 39:56DANI: Yeah.
- 39:57And Alex is like, "Just so you know, I texted our parents and added
- 40:00to our cover story so they're not stressed." And Bay's like, "Thanks.
- 40:03Sorry I'm so shitty."
- 40:05KARA: Yeah.
- 40:05Poor Bay.
- 40:06DANI: I know.
- 40:07Poor Bay, but she's making bad ju-
- 40:09KARA: I know.
- 40:09DANI: I know it's just like she's a teenager, and the point is she's gonna
- 40:12make bad choices, but Zarra is so sus.
- 40:15Also, I don't believe her that Smak jumped her.
- 40:17I'm pretty sure that's a lie.
- 40:18I don't really remember.
- 40:20KARA: She definitely got beat up, though.
- 40:21DANI: She definitely got beat up, but I'm like, I don't know.
- 40:23KARA: I just wonder if-
