- 0:01We frequently mistake the development of the external form
- 0:04as representing the state of the soul in human beings.
- 0:08This often takes the form of assigning worth or status based
- 0:12on education, race, social position within the societal
- 0:17hierarchy, wealth, or positions of power.
- 0:21None of these things, however, actually describe the soul's
- 0:25developmental stage. The soul exists, and over time
- 0:30and through experience, it develops a mature psychic being
- 0:34that gains the power to express the soul's essence through the
- 0:38outer forms it takes on. The outer forms, however, have
- 0:43their limitations, and thus the soul expression may be very much
- 0:47hidden or obscured or overshadowed by the external
- 0:52nature of the mind, life, and body.
- 0:55The psychic being develops over innumerable lifetimes of
- 0:59experience, and thus may not be developed, or at least not fully
- 1:04developed at various points along the way.
- 1:09Living beings that do not have fully developed emotional or
- 1:13mental capabilities nevertheless have a soul essence that
- 1:18expresses itself as best it can through whatever that being is
- 1:25capable of. The Mother clarified, for
- 1:28instance, that flowers had a particular resonance that could
- 1:32express their soul. She actually described the
- 1:35spiritual properties of various flowers at great length, as set
- 1:39forth in various books on the subject, including flowers and
- 1:43Their Messages. She also mentioned the spiritual
- 1:47nature of a particular cat at the ashram.
- 1:51The soul is not dependent on high intellectual expression,
- 1:55refined emotional capacities, or strong vital or physical powers.
- 2:01A lack of higher education does not act as an impediment to the
- 2:05action of the soul. On the contrary, sometimes
- 2:09academic or intellectual attainment can create an
- 2:13obstacle that the soul needs to overcome in order to come
- 2:17forward and guide the being directly, Sri Aurobindo writes.
- 2:23Quote. A distinction has to be made
- 2:26between the soul in its essence and the psychic being.
- 2:30Behind each and all there is the soul, which is the spark of the
- 2:34Divine. None could exist without that.
- 2:38But it is quite possible to have a vital and physical being
- 2:41without a clearly evolved psychic being behind it.
- 2:45Still, one cannot make general statements that no aboriginal
- 2:49has a soul or there is no display of soul anywhere.
- 2:54The inner being is composed of the inner mental, inner vital,
- 2:58inner physical. But that is not the psychic
- 3:01being. The psychic is the inmost being
- 3:05and quite distinct from these. The word psychic is indeed used
- 3:09in English to indicate anything that is other or deeper than the
- 3:13external mind, life and body, anything a cult or super
- 3:18physical. But that is a use which brings
- 3:21confusion and error, and we entirely discard it when we
- 3:25speak or write about yoga In ordinary parlance.
- 3:29We may sometimes use the word psychic in the looser popular
- 3:33sense, or in poetry, which is not bound to intellectual
- 3:37accuracy. We may speak of the soul,
- 3:39sometimes in the ordinary and more external sense, or in the
- 3:44sense of the true psyche. The psychic being is veiled by
- 3:49the surface movements, and expresses itself as best it can
- 3:52through these outer instruments, which are more governed by the
- 3:56outer forces than by the inner influences of the psychic.
- 4:01But that does not mean that they are entirely isolated from the
- 4:04soul. The soul is in the body in the
- 4:07same way as the mind or vital, but the body it occupies is not
- 4:12this gross physical frame only, but the subtle body also.
- 4:18When the gross sheath falls away, the vital and mental
- 4:21sheaths of the body still remain as the soul's vehicle till these
- 4:26two dissolve. The soul of a plant or an animal
- 4:30is not altogether dormant. Only its means of expression are
- 4:34less developed than those of a human being.
- 4:38There is much that is psychic in the plant, much that is psychic
- 4:42in the animal. The plant has only the vital
- 4:44physical evolved in its form, so it cannot express itself.
- 4:49The animal has a vital mind and can, but its consciousness is
- 4:54limited and its experiences are limited, so the psychic essence
- 4:59has a less developed consciousness and experience
- 5:02than is present or at least possible in man.
- 5:06All the same animals have a soul and can respond very readily to
- 5:12the psychic in man. End Quote reference Srioro Bindo
