- 0:07On Thursday, October 6, 1977, the Kansas City Royals faced the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium for Game 2 of the 1977 ALCS.
- 0:17Kansas City had stole Game 1 of the ALCS at Yankee Stadium, defeating New York 7-2 thanks to scoring two runs in each of the first three innings.
- 0:24For Game 2, Yankee's manager Billy Martin would start rookie Ron Guidry on the mound in hopes to even the series before heading back to Kansas City.
- 0:31This audio recording of Game 2 of the series is from the WMCA Radio broadcast featuring announcers Phil Rizzuto, Frank Messer, Bill White, Mel Allen, and John Sterling.
- 1:00The Mel Allen, John Sterling pre-game show is brought to you by Card Blanche. Since no credit card is accepted everywhere, you should have Card Blanche.
- 1:09The credit card, you need no matter what other credit card you have, and by Emory, the Air Force and Air Freight.
- 1:38Good evening everyone, and welcome to our second pre-game show.
- 1:46Obviously before the second game of what might be a five-game series, it might be a four-game series.
- 1:55The Kansas City wins tonight. Mel Allen, the specter of a three-game series, remains. Tonight becomes, and it will change every day, the most important game that Yankees have played all year long.
- 2:10They will have dropped both games at home, they will play the remaining three in Kansas City, and they will face the best pitcher of the Royals, Dennis Leonard, in a very spacious ballpark tomorrow night.
- 2:26The 20th game, it might be tough to beat in his own ballpark, as John just indicated. You know, John, through the years, and I don't mean to be cynical about this, because after all, it was a great thrill to be able to participate in the World Series, just as a broadcaster.
- 2:47But nonetheless, you figure baseball is a game of percentage, you play 154 games, or did it one time, and then it was extended to 162 games.
- 3:02You go through that entire season, and that's what it used to be, to determine a penant winner. And that somehow seemed to be more important to me than winning a world championship for this reason.
- 3:16It all boiled down in a World Series to who happened to be the hottest in a particular week in winning the best four out of seven. And one time, the history of baseball was the best five out of nine.
- 3:26That was long before I got around here, but I guess from the other side of the coin, that's part of the game. I suppose in many sports, that's like boxing, it's like belly con against the Joe Lewis.
- 3:42Con had the fight all ramped up, but he decided he'd like to finish in a flourish, and so he opened up and tried to knock Lewis out, and he was out boxing, Joe.
- 3:52That's all Joe needs, is that one punch, and he won the fight. But people expected Lewis to do it.
- 3:59But here, I'm reminded John, and jump in here, for example, an individual like Lake Gill Hodges. In the World Series, he didn't get a hit against the Yankees.
- 4:16Most people listening in who remember that series, or who have read about it, know that masses were said for Hodges, those were rooting for the Dodgers.
- 4:25But he went hitless in that entire series. Yet he came back the following year and they couldn't get him out of it. Well, over 400.
- 4:32The thing is, everything depends on that one week, and yet you played 162 games before that to get into a playoff to determine whether or not you can get into a World Series.
- 4:48I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm just not in favor of playoffs in any case.
- 4:53You know, I think that's why I mention it's so silly for us to pick, or anyone to pick, what's going to happen in a five-game series, or even a seven-game series,
- 5:05especially a five-game series, which is so short, because anything can happen.
- 5:12And I mentioned the very first game before the Yankees game. I mentioned two things that don't figure to happen.
- 5:29right center field, and we discuss why that didn't happen in the first game.
- 5:33You know what interested me, Mel, we're going to do this program. We're going to be here until 8 o'clock before the Yankee broadcast at Sierra, and the program is sold.
- 5:43And we're going to try to give people who are in their cars right now going to the game or at home, ready to listen to the game, and their appetite is wetted.
- 5:50Some of the great fun in sports is getting ready for the game.
- 5:54And we're going to talk, but it's very tough, though, and I know that we won't do it to overanalyze.
- 6:03I mean, after all, how many things can you say about yesterday's game? There were barely any controversial plays.
- 6:09And then you know, someone said in the newspaper, that once the – your first year batter score 2 runs, and you have 6 runs inside of 3 innings,
- 6:38The third game of the series, Hasloth started that one, and Kansas City got three runs off
- 6:45Doc Ellis.
- 6:46And the first inning with the ball game turned out not to have been over.
- 6:50The Yankees came back to win it.
- 6:52So it just depends how you feel about writing a story or talking about it.
- 6:57Well, you know what I was going to say.
- 6:58I was kind of intrigued, maybe, the wrong word.
- 7:04I'm going to be amused, too, because I'm sometimes cynical about sports.
- 7:08But I read all three New York papers.
- 7:10Now, I didn't read the New York Star Ledger.
- 7:12I didn't read Newsday, and I usually read those newspapers.
- 7:15I read the three New York papers, and everyone wrote the game like, it's gone.
- 7:24It's over.
- 7:25The Yankees lost.
- 7:26They played their worst ball of the year.
- 7:30I wanted my head against the wall.
- 7:32Did people think Kansas City couldn't win?
- 7:35They led the big leagues with 102 wins.
- 7:38When you look at their lineup, every guy in their lineup is either fast or a good hitter
- 7:45or a good defensive player.
- 7:46Their pitching staff is nine deep.
- 7:49Some of their players, Cowins, Brett, Otis, the platoon, left fielders, Poquette and Zeb,
- 7:57are both fast and good hitters and good defensive.
- 7:59It is a hell of a team.
- 8:01It is an outstanding team.
- 8:03Of course, we'll have to admit that in this area, Kansas City did not get as much exposure
- 8:11to the individuals on the team and therefore the team as they would have had they represented
- 8:17New York.
- 8:18Or even, let's say, the Boston Red Sox, because the Yankees' Red Sox arrived us, or had there
- 8:23been the same people out of the banner of the Mets, but it is your job, it's my job, and
- 8:32we've had occasion to follow all the teams.
- 8:36And we talked to people about their teams when we don't have a chance to see them.
- 8:41I've had a chance to see a lot of the other teams more frequently this year because of
- 8:46a certain show that we were doing.
- 8:49And so a lot of the highlights of many of their games.
- 8:52And of course, Kansas City didn't surprise me at all in winning yesterday, or even if
- 8:59they'd lost.
- 9:00It could have gone either way.
- 9:02My point is, I agree with you thoroughly.
- 9:06There's a team that's got everything.
- 9:07And if they've been put it all together in this given week, it wouldn't surprise me at
- 9:11all to see them sweep the Yankees in three games.
- 9:14You see, you take a guy like Collins.
- 9:17Everybody's talking.
- 9:18And all of a sudden, I read a couple of papers, gee, I wonder how many votes he might get
- 9:23now for MVP.
- 9:24I wonder had he been considered for it.
- 9:26Well, he'd been considered for it long before that ball game yesterday.
- 9:30Is that right?
- 9:31You know, it's interesting.
- 9:33I read something about the Dodger Phillies, and I honestly, Mel, I shook my head.
- 9:39You could heard everything rattle around in there.
- 9:42Someone wrote in one of the three newspapers now that just when Los Angeles fans were
- 9:48about ready to root for the Rams, the Dodger season was over.
- 9:53The Dodgers won yesterday.
- 9:54Well, did they think that in other words, that it was ordained from heaven that the
- 9:58Dodgers were going to win the first game and win the second and maybe lose the third and
- 10:02win the fourth?
- 10:04You have to win three games.
- 10:06And someone asked Garvey after the first game lost, is tomorrow a must game?
- 10:11He said, well, not unless it's a two out of three series.
- 10:14Well, anyway.
- 10:15You know, the old, the best line of all is a guy interviewed at this time of his life,
- 10:20the great spanks, Dwayne Thomas, before the Dallas Super Bowl win.
- 10:27Thomas hadn't played great in that win, but and said to him, Dwayne, you're going to play
- 10:33in the Super Bowl.
- 10:34Do you consider that the ultimate game?
- 10:37And Thomas said, did they going to play it next year?
- 10:40He said, yeah, he said, I guess not.
- 10:42That's right.
- 10:43Beautiful line.
- 10:44But anyway, we're going to get into the pitching matchups, which really do favor the X tonight,
- 10:50but and we'll try to look at things.
- 10:53But the more you analyze Mel, the more all this analysis is pure Balderdash and Poppy
- 10:59Cock because if Potec would draw a walk and McRae would hit a home run, there goes the
- 11:05things off should River steal or should you play hit and right when they hit the ball
- 11:09over the fence and score two, four, six runs quick, there isn't any strategy anymore.
- 11:14Is this can you get those runs back?
- 11:16But it's playing catch up ball.
- 11:18Yeah, which is and you don't and you can't run it really takes your game away.
- 11:21And that's what Kansas City did yesterday.
- 11:23And it was a it was frankly a very, very easy win.
- 11:28Let me say this.
- 11:30My feelings about Kansas City would be the same if they lost 15 nothing yesterday.
- 11:33I'm not saying those things about Kansas City because they won the game.
- 11:36They just happened to win that game.
- 11:38You know, God didn't have it.
- 11:39He hurt his army won't pitch anymore.
- 11:41They get the home runs, counts made the plays in right field.
- 11:44But there are no accidents in baseball.
- 11:47In fact, baseball is by far and Mel Island knows this far better than I do having gone
- 11:51through so many seasons.
- 11:5225, 30 seasons as a major league announcer going 154 games a year.
- 11:57Well, there are no accidents in baseball.
- 11:59Baseball is the truest season, isn't it?
- 12:00That's right.
- 12:01It's a you know, we always say it's a game of percentage, a game of inches and all that
- 12:06sort of thing, but it actually is in the long run.
- 12:13Again percentage wise, the better team will win.
- 12:18I remember once the Yankees fighting for a pennant, but it happened at a proper stage
- 12:23of the season that they lost the nine in a row.
- 12:27Well, generally you can't afford to lose nine in a row.
- 12:30However, they had the good fortune to have won 18 in a row before that so the record
- 12:36for the month was 18 and nine.
- 12:39But if you lose nine in a row the last 10 days of the year and you're fighting for
- 12:42first place, you know, it's just when it happens.
- 12:46I remember that.
- 12:47I remember a friend of mine, Dodger fan, teasing me about that.
- 12:51And I said to him, well, they won 18 in a row.
- 12:53They were twice as good as they are bad.
- 12:55Because that was in 53.
- 12:57I don't think they had any problems that years I recall they had tremendous ballclub.
- 13:02What do you take?
- 13:03I remember after you and I were talking yesterday on my way home, I happened to think about a
- 13:10short series.
- 13:12Yankees against the Cardinals in 1942 happened to come across my mind.
- 13:16Because the Yankees won the first game and they had, you know, fellows like Ruffing and
- 13:22Gomez, a great team all the way around and lo and behold the Cardinals also with a good
- 13:30team as far as that's concerned, they swept the next four.
- 13:35But it all turned on one play in the second game.
- 13:38Ninth inning Yankees had a chance to come back and tie.
- 13:42Tuck Steenback was sent in to run.
- 13:45I think for Bill Dickey who just singled.
- 13:48In any case there was another base hit and he was on his way to third base.
- 13:54He rounded second and headed for third by way of left field and slaughtered through him
- 13:59out.
- 14:00Anyway, he broke the back of the rally.
- 14:01Cardinals then won the ball game and came on to Yankees Stadium and won three more in
- 14:08a row.
- 14:09So, you know, the next year the Yankees came right back and beat the Cardinals.
- 14:13So there you are.
- 14:14As I said, we don't want to certainly overanalyze, the only thing is that you don't have your
- 14:20chance in the series to show you're a good ball club if you lose two or three games in
- 14:24a row.
- 14:25That takes care of the series and the Yankees lose the game tonight.
- 14:32Their chance is really a very slim because again based on, you know, they can win three
- 14:37games in a row and they can win on Friday.
- 14:40They could win on Saturday, they could win on Sunday, but as Mel was saying, it really
- 14:47is the percentage.
- 14:48If you take a ball club as good as Kansas City is and as good as they are in home, as
- 14:52bad as Yankees have played on the carpet in Kansas City, the percentage doesn't figure
- 14:57they'd win three in a row.
- 14:59Now, you can recall two of your great World Series announcing Jobs Eyes clinging to every
- 15:04pitch in 52 and in 58 when the Yankees had to win two in the rival ball parks to close
- 15:10up the series.
- 15:11They beat the Dodgers in six and seven in Evansfield, they beat the Braves six and seven in Milwaukee.
- 15:16That was the best series, the most exciting series.
- 15:17As a matter of fact, they had to win three in a row.
- 15:19I think it only had been done once before and again, it took a great play in the last
- 15:25game of the Yankee Stadium to keep the Braves from beating the Yankees two straight World
- 15:31Series.
- 15:32Elston Howard was playing right field that day.
- 15:34He wanted more, another right hand hit on the lineup and he made a catch, a diving catch
- 15:40of a low liners, sinking liners, just like a fellow diving into a pool without water.
- 15:47That stopped the Braves rally, just one play like that.
- 15:50The Yankees held on, they won and so they were down three games to one.
- 15:55Now this makes it three games to two.
- 15:57Now they go back to Milwaukee, they got Spahn and Burdette and Fred Ainey decided well,
- 16:03they got the adjunct, give Spahn, Burdette an extra day's rest.
- 16:07This is before they left to go back to Milwaukee.
- 16:11This was the last game the Yankee Stadium I talked about.
- 16:14I think he threw, Bob Rush, they formed a big tall guy because he had an overhand delivery
- 16:21and that's when you could sit in the bleachers, the hot day white shirts and that ball was
- 16:27coming right out of those shirts and that was a good thinking in the part of Fred Ainey
- 16:31but this changed the momentum around and I do believe the momentum in any sport.
- 16:36The Yankees got out there to Milwaukee and guys like Bob Terley who generally on the
- 16:41wild side, Ryan Duren certainly on the wild side, they were throwing nothing but strikes.
- 16:45Now figure it out, why in a world series, here guys, boom, boom, boom, strike, strike,
- 16:51strike, strike.
- 16:52And you can have the reverse of that, like we said a while ago guys, they're great hitters
- 16:57but they happen to be in a slump during a series.
- 17:00That's the story.
- 17:03The first of those two games in Milwaukee, the Yankees were down, Terley came in early
- 17:08to relieve where it started, maybe in Larson didn't pitch well.
- 17:12Terley pitched maybe from the third inning on or so and Duren came in and I'm so worried
- 17:22that the Brady's going to score the series.
- 17:23They went to the 10th and the Yankees did score and then somebody hit a humpback line,
- 17:30it looked like it was going to score the run but McNugle went back and said, I've made
- 17:32the catch and I, whoo, next game was tied and the Yankees broke it up with a rally,
- 17:37the coming day was Skyron's home run.
- 17:39Howard got the big hit then, Yogi doubled with two out and Howard hit one up the middle
- 17:43for the winning run.
- 17:46I think Skyron, that was a home run I think I alluded to yesterday in discussing some
- 17:52point, we were talking about base running and about how a runner, who was a great player,
- 18:00oh Patek, we were talking about him, how he can annoy a pitcher to the point that he loses
- 18:06concentration on the hitter and this is what happened with the mantle up, with Skyron up,
- 18:11the mantle was wearing the pitchers so much, he laid one in there and Skyron put it up
- 18:18in the left center field seats.
- 18:19It is 733 at WMCA Strauss Communications in the York Wheel of People Radio.
- 18:26Now Mel and I are going to be back in a moment to talk about the game itself and the only
- 18:32reason I haven't done it thus far is you know you can talk games to death but the games
- 18:37are played between the lines but we'll have a look anyway at Hasler and certainly at
- 18:42Ron Guidry and we'll get back right after this.
- 18:45Voice recorder, oxygen masks, you're listening to the sound of one of the world's great
- 18:51air forces, hydraulic systems, and check, an air force with more planes at its disposal
- 18:58than Russia or even America, ground equipment, clear, an air force that flies more often
- 19:03and to more places than any airline in the world, it's Emory the air force in air freight,
- 19:09at Emory we have more than just a fleet of planes at our command, we have a fleet of
- 19:14airlines where we reserve space on key flights of practically every airline carrying packages
- 19:19and we use hundreds of off-line commuter and charter planes, even planes of our own where
- 19:24airline service is weak.
- 19:26We also have thousands of people, thousands of trucks and hundreds of offices waiting
- 19:30for us on the ground.
- 19:32Control assist, TWA 463 ready for takeoff.
- 19:35The next time you have a package to ship, don't just ship it with an air freight company
- 19:39or even a package only airline, ship it with an air force, Emory the air force in air freight.
- 19:52This 25 minutes before eight, we'll be going up to Yankee Stadium at 8 o'clock and right
- 19:56now for Cart Blanche, here's Mel.
- 19:59If you happen to be going up to Yankee Stadium for the World Series, forget that far, start
- 20:06up a little earlier if you feel hungry, in other words next time you have an appetite
- 20:11for fine Chinese food, I suggest you go directly to Billy Hong's, that's at 133 West 52nd Street
- 20:19here in New York, and Cart Blanche.
- 20:22Billy Hong's is one of many fine restaurants in New York where your Cart Blanche cart will
- 20:27allow you to spoil, indulge and treat yourself with the kind of food nobody can make at home.
- 20:33Dinner always tastes a little better when you have it with style, with your Cart Blanche
- 20:37cart, because people know Cart Blanche denotes more than an average measure of distinction
- 20:43and taste. With a Cart Blanche cart, you can travel with style too, you can Cart Blanche
- 20:49your airline tickets, Cart Blanche your rented car, Cart Blanche your hotel bill, and even
- 20:55Cart Blanche a vacation tour through Cartan tours. So keep your cart with you wherever
- 21:00you go will you, and Cart Blanche your way through over 250,000 doors across the country,
- 21:07including Billy Hong's. Cart Blanche it friends, and you'll know you're going first class,
- 21:12and so will everyone else.
- 21:13Amel, Ron Guidry has to pitch well, and I guess if you're looking at Guidry, I guess
- 21:20you have to look at the very, very first inning, we made this point about Gullit before, and
- 21:27I guess we can make it about Guidry. Guidry has the only bad habit, he's had a fabulous
- 21:33year in there, the only bad habit he's had is true of most young hard throwing pitches
- 21:38who tend to overthrow in order to throw harder, and he doesn't have to overthrow.
- 21:44No, he's got good power as it is.
- 21:47And then when you overthrow, usually the ball is going to be high out of the strikes.
- 21:54That has been, in fact I think that was his trouble last start. He was trying to be too
- 22:02powerful, and as John just said, his natural velocity is sufficient to overpower most hitters.
- 22:12But when you try to give it that little extra, particularly the outset of a game, you start
- 22:18out wild, and when you do that, then you start to press, and when you start to press, then
- 22:24you're not relaxed. I always love that expression, John, relaxed tension. The two words of course
- 22:32are imposed on one another, and there are meanings, but in the world of sports they
- 22:38always tell you, you have to be tense enough to be alert, to be ready, and yet relaxed
- 22:45enough to be able to execute according to your ability.
- 22:53When you mention the relative youth of Ron Guidry, he's I think 26.
- 23:01Pictures are the latest to mature, generally speaking. Once in a while you get a young
- 23:07ster that's quite mature, but pictures, they become pictures instead of throwers when they
- 23:14get to be around 28, 29, even 30, because then they learn how to set a hitter up instead
- 23:21of just relying on raw speed or just the raw ability. And through this season, I think
- 23:29that Guidry, who is now 26, he had some spectacular games out at Syracuse the last year, but I
- 23:36think the thing that interests me more than anything else, John, is the possibility of
- 23:47a dramatic story. Ron Guidry, ready to be cut, looked awful in spring training, and yet
- 23:57somebody said, let's keep him, let's see what he does, and they did, and it turned out to
- 24:02be just about the best picture that Yankees had all year because of injuries to Bigger
- 24:07Rowan, Hunter, and Gullit.
- 24:09There's a very good story that when you've been around sports as long as we have it,
- 24:17one may think that the story tends to be apocryphal. I don't know if it is or not, but he said
- 24:22Guidry had a terrible spring, and allegedly Billy Warren came to one day and said, look,
- 24:27tell me who you can get out. I will pitch you against him, so you get someone out. But
- 24:36as you say, they kept Guidry around, and then with the injuries, and in no time at all,
- 24:41people soon discovered, hey, his starts are very good. He at first had trouble finishing,
- 24:44and he did not have that trouble from the latter part of the summer on. There's no problem
- 24:48tonight. Tonight is 55, 60 degrees, great pitchers weather. They just don't get tired.
- 24:55I would say if Guidry has a good, it's a great test right away for both sides. Freddie
- 25:01Patek, I'm sure will lead off, and it worked for Herzog yesterday. Gullit was wild. I didn't
- 25:08come near the strike zone, and Patek has got to go up, and I'm sure Herzog is going to
- 25:13say, Freddie, take a couple of pitches. Let's see if he's going to get the ball over the
- 25:15plate. I'm sure Guidry is going to concentrate and gain the ball over the plate. Patek is
- 25:21not exactly liable to hurt him with a long ball. I would say if Guidry has a pretty strong
- 25:27first two innings, he's going to be in very good shape.
- 25:30I agree with you. That's why I'm anxious to see exactly what Billy Martin's starting
- 25:37lineup is going to be tonight. I always like to go along. Maybe that's not quite a good
- 25:51way to put it. I mean, I always appreciated the philosophy behind making up a lineup that
- 25:59most managers have. Naturally, you've got to have the horses. Let's take the Chicago
- 26:04White Sox in one given year. The leadoff man was Luis Apericio. Let's say he is somewhat
- 26:12like Patek today. Luis was fast. He stole a lot of bases, but who hit second? A guy named
- 26:18Nellie Fox, a left-hand hitter, made contact. He could bunt. He could bunt toward third.
- 26:25He could drag down toward first. He could spray the ball around over third, short, second,
- 26:30first. Struck out maybe a dozen, 15 times a year. Tough man to get out. The additional
- 26:40aspect of being a left-hand hitter gave Apericio that extra step because the catcher, he has
- 26:47to move back just a little bit so he can look at that runner. Although you steal on the
- 26:51pitcher most of the time, 90% or better, he still is that much further behind the plate.
- 26:58Then when he has to throw, I've seen Fox and many others who are currently playing. They
- 27:05sort of lean over in front of that catcher and he's ready to throw so they block him
- 27:09a little bit. Yesterday we had Greg Nettles hitting second. Greg is a power hitter. He's
- 27:19not what you would call normally a number two hitter, but I can understand it from the
- 27:26standpoint of wanting perhaps to get off to a quick lead. Also, with McCray, who goes
- 27:33to the right side batting him back off Ponteck. If Ponteck gets on base, you have to hold
- 27:39him on. That opens up a big hole for a guy like McCray. Nettles is a pull-hitter. He
- 27:42wasn't able to pull yesterday, but if Rivers gets on base, he was on base all the time
- 27:47yesterday, the thinking I would think is that Nettles is going to be able to pull a ball.
- 27:51If he hits a ground wall, it may go through because the first baseman is holding the runner
- 27:55on. I think that's why the Braves for years used to use Eddie Matthews batting second
- 28:00at times, which we would say, why would you use Matthews? A guy who had over 500 home
- 28:04runs batting second. They had a lot of power in the line of, as did the Yankees, but if
- 28:08he hits a ground wall, it's got a great chance to go through if someone's on base.
- 28:13I want you to talk for a minute about Andy Hassler because you have his pitching line.
- 28:19We're going to do that in a minute. Andy Hassler is the Royal's gamble pitcher. You're
- 28:23not as much of a gamble cause they won the first game because the Royal's have a lot
- 28:27of options at their disposal. We'll talk about Andy Hassler in just a moment. It is 16 minutes
- 28:33before eight and we'll get back with more of our pregame right after this.
- 28:40This is Dave Kingman. It's a great feeling to be a winner. That's why when I need a
- 28:44car to depend on, there's only one place to go for it. Jim Smith Chevrolet in Spring
- 28:49Valley. At Jim Smith Chevrolet, they treat everyone like a winner every time. And you'll
- 28:54feel like a winner when you see the complete selection of fabulous new 78 Chevy's and
- 28:58use cars and trucks, including hard to get models you thought no one carried. If you're
- 29:03like me, your time is valuable. With 52 service bays and 18 factory trained mechanics at your
- 29:09disposal, you'll get immediate attention and service for your car. They even have their
- 29:13own paint and body shop and over $175,000 worth of parts and stock. If you live anywhere
- 29:19within an hour or so of South Route 45 in Spring Valley, Jim Smith Chevrolet should
- 29:23be your dealer. Just stop in and tell him Dave Kingman sent you. You'll get the finest
- 29:28care and attention. And if you're a licensed driver, you'll even get an autographed baseball,
- 29:33one per family while they last. You're really a winner with Jim Smith Chevrolet.
- 29:39It's 15 minutes before eight and right now for car blanche, here is Mel Allen.
- 29:47Friends, the next time you have a real hearty appetite for fine American food, go directly
- 29:53to Charlie O's at 33 West 48th Street in New York and cart blanche. Charlie O's is one
- 30:00of many fine restaurants in New York where your cart blanche card will allow you to spoil
- 30:05and dull and treat yourself with the kind of food nobody can make at home. And I know
- 30:11Charlie O's because I've been over there. Dinner always tastes a little better when
- 30:15you have it with style and some special dishes you don't get it on. And you can get it with
- 30:20your cart blanche card because people know cart blanche denotes more than an average measure
- 30:26of distinction and taste. With a cart blanche card, you can travel with style too. You can
- 30:31cart blanche your airline tickets, cart blanche your rented car, cart blanche your hotel bill
- 30:37even, and even cart blanche a vacation tour through cart hand tours. Keep your card with
- 30:43you wherever you go and cart blanche your way through over 250,000 doors all across
- 30:49the country including Charlie O's. Cart blanche it. You know you're going first class and
- 30:55so will everyone else.
- 30:57Well Mel, tonight the Royals, since they won, can line up their Kansas City pitchers Dennis
- 31:03London and Jim Colburn who are right handers and if they need a fifth game starter, if
- 31:07there is a fifth game, Paul Splittoff I know will come back. So tonight they're going with
- 31:12the left hand pitcher Andy Hasler who was pitched against the Yankees before and has
- 31:18pitched fairly well. Now before we go any further, he is backed up by four or five pitchers.
- 31:26I won't, I'm not going to go through their stats but if Kansas City stays close in the
- 31:31middle innings or early innings, Whitey Herzog has two left handers to pitch, Steve Munguri
- 31:37and Larry Gura and three right handers to pitch, Doug Bird, Mark Lottel and Marty Patton
- 31:43and he can alternate them depending on which part of the Yankee lineup is going on. If
- 31:50the game is a slug oddly enough, if the game is a slugfest, if it's one of those eight,
- 31:54seven, ten, nine games where you have to use a lot of people and no one's effective, Kansas
- 31:59City has much more pitching depth than the Yankees, much more and they would ironically
- 32:05enough, even though the Yankees have the power, ironically enough Kansas City would stand
- 32:10at better stead. So I would think that Herzog would like four or five innings out of Hasler,
- 32:15keep it close to one, three, two, one way or the other and then he can use different
- 32:18early pitches depending on who's coming up. Now what kind of a year did Hasler have?
- 32:23Just before I give you his stats for the year, just to back up what you said, in winning
- 32:29102 games they have five men in double digit figures in the win column.
- 32:35And I want to add something, during, I know you'll agree with me, except for Bob Grimm
- 32:41one year and Turley one year, his young year, in the 50s when the Yankees won a pen at every
- 32:46year and 54 they didn't win but they won 103 games, they won a pen at every year in the
- 32:5250s now except 54 and 59. That was true of the Yankees. They didn't have 20 game winners.
- 32:57That game from Joe McCarthy, he always had four good starters but he liked to give them
- 33:02rest here and there. Instead of starting at every fourth day, he'd make sure they each
- 33:09got rests of the starting four. So he had a lot of guys, like an Adley Donald, 12 and
- 33:16nothing I think, one year but a lot of guys won 15 games, 16 games, 14 games and then
- 33:22he always had a couple of good guys, the Bo Penner, Righty and the Lefty and those pitchers
- 33:29who were the number five, six and seven pitchers who were spot starters, they also became the
- 33:34long relief men when needed just as you pointed out a little bit ago. Hassler this year did
- 33:40not have an outstanding earned run average but then you have to analyze that and try
- 33:46to examine it to see how important it is, just like a 330 hitter. When did he get his
- 33:51hits for the productive and not, he had an earned run average of 4.20 but he won nine
- 33:56games, lost six, made 29 appearances, 27 of them were starts, he only completed three
- 34:03games but again to back up what you said, Whitey Herzog had men on the bullpen to bring
- 34:10them in when Hassler started to fade a little bit. He pitched one shot out, he worked a
- 34:16total of 156 in third innings, allowed 166 hits, gave up 88 runs, 73 earned, only seven
- 34:27homers, 75 walks and 83 strikeouts so he does have a tendency obviously there toward wildness
- 34:35but the left handed pitching and being tall he's six foot five, again is to neutralize
- 34:41the Yankees a long ball power just but Spitzhorter did yesterday. How many innings did he pitch?
- 34:47He pitched 156 in the third and he struck out 83 which is not a great ratio but obviously
- 34:55he can strike out some batters. The one statistic which I think is revealing is the one you
- 35:01hit on, they would like you to have two to one strikeouts to walks and his was even and
- 35:09that's not good, that means he was striking out five or six guys a game and also many
- 35:13was walking by five or six guys a game and that would get you in trouble. So if you can
- 35:19look to Hassler at the beginning of the game, again if you want a little analysis to go
- 35:23on and you can see if it works or not, maybe we're all wrong, you can look for the Yankees
- 35:29maybe to take a couple of pitches because that also depends on the guys, Rivers never
- 35:32takes any pitch, you can't walk, you can throw the ball behind him, it wouldn't walk him
- 35:36but nettles will take pitchers and vanilla would take pitchers.
- 35:40You also have this situation, you know John, there are certain pitchers that are good against
- 35:46certain kinds of ball clubs just as there are certain hitters can hit certain types
- 35:51of pitchers. All Eddie Lopat had to do was throw his glove out there on the field and
- 35:55who the Evers had played for the Detroit Tigers and later it was an administrative official
- 36:02for the Indians. We always kidded about Lopat being Evers' cousin. Hoot could go up there,
- 36:08blind folded and get three or four hits off Lopat, you know, and it could be the reverse
- 36:13of that. He picked you up at the airport, huh? Yeah. Well, Hassler may be one of those
- 36:20followers who's motion and whose style of pitching is not the kind the Yankees particularly
- 36:30like to face because of the nature, the balance of their ball club. Just like yesterday with
- 36:35Sprint or two tall left handers, almost the same kind of motion, same type pitching. Again,
- 36:42I have to say, as it was written about in a couple of papers I read today, but we were
- 36:47aware but yesterday in watching the ball game, the Yankees got one scratch hit, I think,
- 36:55out of their real power. Big guys, right? Big guys. And this is what Whitey Herzog is
- 37:00figuring on tonight. And if it doesn't, if Hassler doesn't come through, as a matter
- 37:08of fact, he made his Major League debut against the Yankees and he did well against them and
- 37:13his first start against them at the Yankee Stadium. He did well for a number of innings
- 37:17but then had to have relief later on. Well, I'm sure that Herzog right now would take
- 37:23four innings of the score being even or one run apart. He just doesn't want to be down
- 37:27three-nothing or four-nothing because if Gidry gets past the first couple innings, you have
- 37:32to feel Gidry is going to pitch his normal seven or eight strong, very strong innings,
- 37:35giving up a run or two. We'll get back with more right after this from Emory. Have you
- 37:40ever gone to the airport to get your package on a plane? Taxi, the airport please. I don't
- 37:46know what it is about this cab but it just refuses to go to the airport at rush hour.
- 37:51I'm afraid of planes. Taxi! When you finally get there, you're almost sorry you did. Could
- 37:57either of you gentlemen tell me where the World International counter is? Sure, it's
- 38:01right over that way. No, Jolly, it's over that way. And when you get to where you're
- 38:05going, you have to be lucky to get your package to where it's going. Hi, I'd like to get this
- 38:09package on your next plane to Fargo, North Dakota, please. And why are you shaking your
- 38:14head? See that plane taking off? Yeah. That warms our next plane to Fargo, North Dakota.
- 38:20Here's an easier way. Call Emory. We'll pick your package up and rush it to the airport.
- 38:25And instead of your package waiting for a plane, chances are you'll find a plane waiting
- 38:29for your package. You'll also find that Emory goes to more places both here and abroad than
- 38:34any other air freight company. Hello, Emory. Help. Emory, the Air Force in Air Freight.
- 38:45Now another word for carte blanche from L. Thanks, John. And folks, next time you have
- 38:51an appetite for fine steak, for fine steakhouse food, go directly to the United States Steakhouse
- 39:00at 120 West 51st Street in New York and carte blanche it. The United States Steakhouse is
- 39:06one of many fine restaurants in New York where your carte blanche card will allow you to
- 39:10spoil and dudge and treat yourself to the kind of food nobody can make at home. Dinner
- 39:16always tastes a little better when you have it with style with your carte blanche card
- 39:21because people know carte blanche denotes more than an average measure of distinction
- 39:26and taste. With a carte blanche card, you can travel with style too. You can carte blanche
- 39:31your airline tickets, carte blanche your rented car, carte blanche your hotel bill, and you
- 39:37can even carte blanche a vacation tour through Cartan Tours. Keep your card with you wherever
- 39:42you go and carte blanche your way through over 250,000 doors all across the country,
- 39:49including United States Steakhouse. My mouth is watering just thinking about it, John.
- 39:56Carte blanche it, friends, and you'll know you're going first class and so will everyone
- 40:00else. Very tough at this hour to keep reading all these commercials for great restaurants.
- 40:04Now I'm going to put you on the spot because we've talked about what Herzog would like
- 40:10out of Hasler and it is somewhat presumptive of us because as you know, who knows what's
- 40:17going to happen in a baseball game. Andy Hasler will go out and put you on his shutout and
- 40:21that's happened before and will always happen. Now we presume that that Gidry will put you
- 40:27very strong game. The Yankees have to hope it, but Mel, the Yankees cannot wait. They
- 40:32can't afford to wait. If they don't win this game, they can say some brave things about
- 40:38going to Kansas City winning three in a row, but their prospects are bleak. Who does Billy
- 40:43Martin bring in? How quickly does he relieve Gidry when the Yankees fall behind by a run
- 40:51or two or three? And that is putting you on the spot. I know because the Yankees have
- 40:54very few betchers. That's the whole point. You're not putting me on the spot with that
- 41:00and if you did, I couldn't be put on the spot by a more knowledgeable and nicer guy. How
- 41:06about that? That would get off alright. Okay. But they just don't have anybody. That is
- 41:13to say you eliminate Holtzman, Clay, he's not experienced enough. Figueroa and Torres,
- 41:23they're hoping that they'll be ready to start and have a reason for starting them in Kansas
- 41:27City. But I guess he'll have to run Lyle in there as quick as possible and then hope
- 41:32for the best. That's probably where you're going to have to do it. That's probably, you
- 41:36know, Tidger, a bit seven innings yesterday. Right. And I guess that's exactly what you'd
- 41:40have to do. If it's three-two and the fourth inning and maybe Kansas City is up three-two
- 41:45and they've got the bases loaded one out and a hit or two is going to blow up in that
- 41:49game, I guess you'd have to come in with Lyle and Holtzman Lyle is going to pitch four or
- 41:53five strong innings for him. Trying to piece a little bit together. See, it's unlike the
- 41:58Dodgers and the Phillies because they have a day off for traveling. And so they have
- 42:02that, the pitchers have a day of rest, but here there is no day off for traveling, which
- 42:07is important. That's the one thing that can truly alter the game tonight is if Gidry is
- 42:15behind in the game and runs in trouble early because Lyle is probably the only Yankee pitch.
- 42:19That's ridiculous to say, but it's true that they can bring in, we'll get back with the
- 42:22final word on the Yankees and Royals tonight right after this.
- 42:27Herman, you've got to sleep. It's late.
- 42:30I can't.
- 42:31It's two o'clock in the morning. Your factory in Fresno should have just received that package
- 42:36you sent, that package that was holding up a production line of who knows how many people,
- 42:41costing you who knows how much money. So you can't sleep.
- 42:44What if they got it?
- 42:46Got what, Herman? Who are you talking to at two o'clock in the morning?
- 42:50Nothing, forget it.
- 42:52And when you try to count sheep, you wind up counting dollars and cents instead.
- 42:56Maybe I should call them.
- 42:57Maybe you should call them, Herman, but call them in the other room.
- 43:01So you decide to call your air freight company just for a little assurance.
- 43:06But nobody's home. Maybe you've got the wrong number or maybe what's worse, you've got the
- 43:11wrong air freight company because at Emory air freight, no matter what hour of the day
- 43:15or night you call us, we'll not only answer the phone, we'll answer your questions.
- 43:20So the next time you want an air freight company that's in when you call, call us in the first
- 43:25place, Emory, the Air Force in Air Freight.
- 43:30Okay, we have to skedaddle. Mel, I'll see you along the third base coaching lines and
- 43:36then back here for our post game.
- 43:37Don't be surprised if you see me in there in relief tonight.
- 43:40No, I know you've been warming up your arm.
- 43:42We'll see you right after the ball game. Stay tuned for the Anks and Royals. John Sterling,
- 43:46I'll see you right after the game.

- 43:53credit card is accepted everywhere, you should have Cart Blanche. The credit card, you need
- 43:59no matter what other credit card you have. And by Emory, the Air Force and Air Freight.

- 47:31Cookie Rollhouse 16 years in the major leagues. You've announced your retirement after the
- 47:38series or the World Series of Kansas City is over. Let's call upon your 16 years in the
- 47:45major leagues and look at yesterday's ball game and also the night's game. What was the
- 47:49big factor yesterday? I was surprised at the power of the Royal Show. Well this year compared
- 47:55to last year the Kansas City Royals had a lot of younger players last year with a lot of
- 48:00inexperience. And I believe that the haters that we have in our ball club have come through
- 48:04what we call the period of experience and the knowledge of the game. You know and Charlie
- 48:09Laugh has helped them. First last year they learned and make them learn how to walk and
- 48:13then this year they finally started running. By that I mean by the kids are learning how
- 48:18to hit the ball and then Charlie this year and the organization believe that they had
- 48:22to hit for more power. They knew how to hit then and then what picture to look for to
- 48:26try to go for the long ball. After the first game over here of course and that small series
- 48:32anything can happen. I think the key point was Gullit yesterday of course wasn't in one
- 48:36of his best days. He was behind all the haters all the time. It happened to Freddy Patek
- 48:41walking the first inning and then helping my play after he got behind him with two strikes
- 48:45and finally hit a home run and we got ahead in the first inning. And the long ball was
- 48:51the key of the ball game. You know our talents hit another home run and then John Mayberry
- 48:55hit another one. Freddy Patek came with two men on bases and hit it all with two outs.
- 48:59And I think that this ball club have meant two or more from last year compared to this
- 49:04year and I think that winning the first game of course is a big step towards the championship.
- 49:10Although Yankee have a tremendous ball club they've been known as the beginning of the
- 49:15season in 77 when they lost five or six games straight they came back and finally won their
- 49:19division. It's not going to be easy I think it's going to be very interesting. Cookie
- 49:22Rohans did you guys have an idea yesterday that Don Gullit was hurting that his arm
- 49:27shoulder was sore. No we shouldn't. You know he had pitched two games against the Kansas
- 49:32Hater Royals this year and it pitched very well. He did both games. He's a man that
- 49:37had experience in this kind of series and a well serious pitcher and he's a money pitcher.
- 49:42And I think the advantage which he didn't show us in the last two times that he pitched
- 49:47against us was his control. Before he was a head of the haters all the time and he didn't
- 49:53give us too much opportunities. I think he hurt himself yesterday by walking a lot of
- 49:59guys and I think this is what hurt him. I was surprised about two things. Potec in the
- 50:03leadoff spot and the fact that Freddie went up there and was looking for a walk. He's
- 50:07usually a very aggressive hitter. He walks very seldom. He knows a small guy. Well why
- 50:11do you have to talk to us before the game. And of course I think maybe the ace idea I
- 50:16think he's playing it to the press was that they know Freddie gets five four. He know that
- 50:20Gullard is a high ball hitter. I mean I'm sorry and chances for him to get on base was a lot
- 50:26better than having somebody else did enough and he paid off that way. Freddie walked the
- 50:30first time up and looked a lot of pitches from him and I think most of our haters did and
- 50:34they got ahead of him and it's like everything else. If a pitcher gets ahead of a hitter he's
- 50:38got the advantage. If a hitter gets ahead of the pitcher he's got the advantage and they
- 50:41paid off for us. My guest on the Yankee pre-game show tonight is veteran and fielder
- 50:45Cookie Rojas and we'll be back in just two minutes. Say you imported beer drinkers. If you
- 50:51tried spot and beer and liked it we've still got another great taste experience for you.
- 50:55Every year during the last week in September the Lord Mayor of Munich Germany walks over to
- 50:59a certain keg of beer and taps it. When he drinks the first glass that's the signal Munich's
- 51:04famous Oktoberfest has begun. Know that first keg of beer tapped is spot and Oktoberfest beer.
- 51:10That's right. It's specially brewed in March. Soak in age properly and be ready for the wonderful
- 51:15Fall Festival held in the city so famous for beer. Spot and Oktoberfest. What a celebration
- 51:21and great beer taste. Spot and the original Oktoberfest beer is between light and dark
- 51:26in color with a delightful aroma of maldon hops. And this crisp brown brew has a taste
- 51:31so right for the autumn season. Spot and quality you can trust since 1397. Spot and probably

- 52:23for today's driving. They're trimmer than last year but there's more headroom, more legroom

- 52:52Your pitcher yesterday, Cookie Rojas, Paul Splitoff was able to handle the Yankee left hand hitters
- 52:59very well. Nettles, Chambla's and so on. Now what about Andy Hasler tonight? Did he go to school
- 53:05on yesterday's ball game? Will he pitch the same type of game that Splitoff put yesterday? Well
- 53:10locked. Andy's capable of doing that. I think he has a tremendous fast ball and runs all over
- 53:16the place and he's got good breaking pitches. The only thing that kept Hasler right up to be
- 53:23a successful pitcher is his control. So I believe that if he has his control tonight he can beat
- 53:30anybody in baseball and only the Yankees. Now if he's behind the hitters all the time and then he
- 53:34can really get hurt like it's happened a couple of times to him but he does have the ability. He
- 53:39has good breaking ball, a good fast ball. He turns the ball over and has a good change of the key
- 53:44to him and I will be that if he can stay ahead of the hitters then he'll be alright. One thing that
- 53:48surprised me again going back to yesterday's ball game. Late in the game the Yankee hitters were
- 53:52swinging at the first pitch for the most part. They weren't waiting Splitoff out. Now will they have
- 53:56to wait Hasler out tonight? Well as you know when you get six round lead like we did yesterday
- 54:01the Yankee hitters were split off throughout the ball game. He could challenge a hitter more. He
- 54:05didn't have to be afraid about the long ball and that's an advantage. If you score first and
- 54:11early and your pitch you all have to do you know it's just a throw strikes and hope that their defense
- 54:17can do the job and that's what baseball is all about. The only play that you can defense in baseball
- 54:22is a walk. That's the one that's going to hurt you all the long run. Ron Gidry, pitcher tonight for the Yankee
- 54:26in Cookie Rollhouse. Just a word or two your thoughts about Ron Gidry. What perhaps scouting
- 54:30report you might have on him. I'll tell you that I say that Gidry is one of the best left-handed
- 54:35pitchers there is in baseball today. His pitch against us he has one of the most overfiring
- 54:40fast balls in the league. He's got a good breaking ball and what I like about him is his guts. He
- 54:45goes down and challenges you and he says here it is hit if you can. His voice is tremendous
- 54:50and he never loses his control of his person and I think that he's one of the best pitchers there is
- 54:56in the league. No question about that. Cookie Rollhouse may I say this a great career on your part
- 55:00the best of luck in whatever you pursue in the future. Appreciate that very much. I hope to stay
- 55:05in baseball and I think I hope to die in baseball. Cookie Rollhouse you've given us all a lot of great

- 1:03:06The city of Leningvijl playing shotstop Freddie Patek. He was two for four yesterday. A key
- 1:03:13double to drive in two runs. The designated hitter and number two batter is Hal McCree.
- 1:03:18He went one for five is one hit a two run.
- 1:03:23He's a great player.
- 1:03:33John Mayberry will hit sixth and play first base. Mayberry also homered in the Royals
- 1:03:39attack yesterday. Joe Zeb will be in left field in bat seven catching and hitting eighth
- 1:03:45Darrell Porter and playing second base and batting ninth Frank White.
- 1:03:51The winner Andy Hasler with a record on the year of nine wins and six losses will pitch
- 1:03:56for Kansas City. For the New York Yankees Mickey Rivers will lead up and play center field.
- 1:04:01He was three for four yesterday. Greg Nuttles will be a third base in bat second.
- 1:04:06Damon Munson who accounted for the two Yankee runs with a two run homer will catch in bat
- 1:04:11third. Reggie Jackson will be in right field and hit fourth. The left field are a number
- 1:04:16of hitters. Luke and Ella. Cliff Johnson is the designated hitter batting sixth. Chris
- 1:04:22Chambers will be at first base and hit seven. What a round off at second base batting eighth
- 1:04:27and playing shortstop for the Yankees and batting ninth. Bucky Dan on the mound Ron
- 1:04:32Goodry who won 16 and lost seven during the regular season. The umpires for the night's
- 1:04:38ball game at home plate Russ gets at first base Jim McKinnon at second base Marty Springsteen
- 1:04:45at third base. Nick Remigan in left field Bill Deegan and in right field Jerry Newdecker.
- 1:04:53Goodry has completed his warm up throws. Fred Pontek a right hand batter steps in and we're
- 1:04:59ready for baseball here at Yankee Stadium. Pontek was two for four yesterday. One of his two
- 1:05:07hits a key two run double the wind up in the first pitch of the game is over but low and
- 1:05:12we're underway as Goodry started Pontek off with a breaking ball. Goodry has the sign
- 1:05:21comes in with a fast ball for a strike letter high on the inside runner it's one and one.
- 1:05:26The Yankees defense pot deck up the middle of the outfield spread. Temperature at game
- 1:05:33time 61 degrees and Pontek looks at strike two calls. One ball and two strikes to Pontek.
- 1:05:40Hal McCrae is on deck a must game for the Yankees wind up by Goodry the pitch bouncing
- 1:05:51ball slowly to shot charging that he has he throws he's out and there's one away.
- 1:05:58Pontek is out on a slow boxer to buggy that and the batter will be Hal McCrae McCrae the
- 1:06:05second at a dinner a right hand batter after Pontek walked on four pitches in the first
- 1:06:12inning yesterday afternoon. Hal McCrae slammed a home run to get the Royals a two nothing
- 1:06:17lead a lead they never relinquished going on to win the ball game by a final score of
- 1:06:22seven to two Yankee infield up the middle the outfield spread the pitch misses outside
- 1:06:28ball one. Lupinella is in left Mickey Rivers and center Reggie Jackson in right the wind
- 1:06:35up by Goodry the slender left hander deals. It's one and one.
- 1:06:40Greg Knudels at third base. Bucky dead at shot stop. Lily Randolph at second Chris
- 1:06:45Chambliss at first with Thurman Munson catching. Here's the one one pitch to McCrae.
- 1:06:50Breaking ball misses and the counters two and one. Munson turns around to play down by
- 1:06:57a russ gets on that call. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:07:03Goodry rocks and offers high. No question about that one and the count is three and one.
- 1:07:12On the coaching lines for the Royals Chuck Hiller at third Steve Boros at first three
- 1:07:17one pitch bow back on a big swing by McCrae three and two. One out nobody on no score
- 1:07:29here in the top half of the first inning. Ron Goodry straight as a ramrod takes the
- 1:07:37sign from Munson the three two pitch fouled in the upper deck on the first base side
- 1:07:42and the count holds at three balls and two strikes. Goodry posted an earned run average
- 1:07:49of 2.82 during the regular season and he comes in high ball poor. He loses how McCrae
- 1:07:58on a walk. The batter will be George Brett the third baseman. Brett went 0 for 5 yesterday.
- 1:08:08Here's a left hand hitter. This is Goodry's first start in ALCS competition. He made an
- 1:08:21appearance in last year's playoffs as a pinch runner after being used in relief and six of
- 1:08:28his first seven appearances this year. Ron has since made 24 consecutive starts left hand
- 1:08:34or the runner goes the pitch has taken a month's install a good draw and he is safe as he
- 1:08:40kicks the ball away from Buckington. Now McCrae steals second the throw had him beat but he
- 1:08:48knocked the ball away on the slide into Buckington and is safe at second and now Billy Martin
- 1:08:54is coming out. Billy Martin is coming out to discuss the play with second base umpire
- 1:09:02Marty Springstand. It was a good throw from Cleven Munson but in going in McCrae evidently
- 1:09:10just kicked the ball away and knocked it away from Buckington. There will not be a stolen
- 1:09:20base given a error will be charged to Buckington at the shortstop. An error is charged to
- 1:09:30Buckington as in the opinion of the official score and on second thought an excellent
- 1:09:37ruling. Cleven Munson's throw was just about perfect at the second base and had McCrae beaten
- 1:09:44but Buckington could not handle it. The ball was kicked away and an error is charged to Yankee
- 1:09:53shortstop Bucky Depp. So McCrae is at second with one out a count of one and oh on Brett
- 1:10:00and the pitches one on and foul back one ball and one strike. Brett during the regular season
- 1:10:07batted 3 12. Last year he won the American League batting title on the final day of the
- 1:10:13season edging out his teammate Hal McCrae who is roosted right now down at second base.
- 1:10:20The on deck batter is Al Collins. One one pitch foul back just below us. One Goodry last pitched
- 1:10:31on Friday losing to the Detroit Tigers five to two here at Yankee Stadium. The loss broke
- 1:10:36an eight game winning streak for Ronnie. He won 11 of his last 14 decisions this year
- 1:10:42and since the all star break Goodry one cannon lost only two. He deals Brett swings it's
- 1:10:48a fly ball deep center back those rivers. He's under it now. Quick makes the catch McCrae
- 1:10:54is tagged heading for third and he makes it standing up two down two outs McCrae at second
- 1:11:07and the batter will be Al Collins Royals right the other one three for four yesterday afternoon
- 1:11:14including a solo home run. He is a right hand batter. Lucky that shades him over toward
- 1:11:34the end of the season. The outfield spreads out again during the regular season Goodry
- 1:11:45struck out a hundred seventy six man in two hundred eleven innings pitch. He walked but
- 1:11:50he's still on the line. He goes to the full wide. Oh one pitches. No balls two strikes
- 1:12:06on Al Collins. Now McCrae leads off at third. Goodry has the side the full line. Oh two
- 1:12:16pitches. Get on the ground. Outside of first. Right off the end of the bat. And the count
- 1:12:26holds nothing in two. Goodry posted an earned run average of two point eighty two during
- 1:12:40the regular season. That was fourth best in the American League behind Frank Tanana bird
- 1:12:45seven and Nolan Ryan. It was the second best earned run average among left handers. Time
- 1:12:54is called by the plate umpire Russ gets. Goodry tied with Dennis Leonard and Bert Blylaven
- 1:13:05for second in the league in shutouts with five. His winning percentage of six ninety six
- 1:13:11was fourth in the league. The O2 deal. Check swing it's high ball and two strikes. Amos
- 1:13:19Otis is waiting on deck. No score runner at third and two outs here on the top of the
- 1:13:25first. Chalkiller the third base coach goes out to talk to the base runner Hal McCrae
- 1:13:30and the third. Goodry takes the side the one two deal swing. No one has been in the
- 1:13:46game. The count is sitting up and the Yankees are coming about. You're going to be feeling
- 1:14:12good. You jump into one of the serve on it's a quarter bound one hundred percent pure
- 1:14:18line. Delicious sir. Only a genius. Take your appetite to Gino's and treat it to a juicy
- 1:14:43meal. If you're thinking about a far away vacation but money's keeping you close to
- 1:14:59home come on into HFC with an HFC travel loan you could get away from it all. HFC an
- 1:15:07equal opportunity lender. Household finance where people use our money to get the most
- 1:15:19out of life. Rivers leads off the bottom half of the first for the Yankees. Rivers had three
- 1:15:29for four and almost had a home run. It was taken away from him on a great catch by the
- 1:15:35other columns. Rivers had two singles and a double. George Brett comes in shadow down
- 1:15:44the line at third base. Astler into the wind up the big left handers pitch sliced foul
- 1:15:51in the crowd on the left side as Rivers tried to slap it by George Brett. Rivers at
- 1:16:0125 during the regular season. Well home run sixty nine runs but it in for Mickey during
- 1:16:11the season. Now the wine the old one pitch taken low. One ball and one strike.
- 1:16:25Ray Nuttles is on deck and then Thurman Munson for the Yankees here in the first no score.
- 1:16:32Astler winds the left handers pitch inside breaking ball two and one. Astler stands
- 1:16:39six five he weighs two fifteen he is twenty five years old on native of Texas City Texas.
- 1:16:48The Royals got him midway through the seventy six season from the California Angels. He
- 1:16:53was the fourth man in the Royals starting rotation during most of this past season
- 1:17:00winning nine losing six and posting an end run average of four point twenty and 156
- 1:17:08innings pitch he walked seventy five and struck out eighty three men. Two and two on
- 1:17:14Mickey and the other two on the left handers pitch. He was the fourth man in the
- 1:17:20first half of the season and he struck out eighty three man. Two and two on Mickey Rivers.
- 1:17:25Brett has moved back to the edge of the grass at third base. Astler winds and here's the
- 1:17:30pitch swing and a foul off the catcher Porter. Mickey Rivers went for a high pitch.
- 1:17:41Fouled it off Porter the catcher seems to be all right. Defensively the Royals go with
- 1:17:49the ball to the left and left field. Amos Otis is in center and Al Collins in right
- 1:17:54the infield George Brett at third Fred Patek at short. Frank White at second John Mayberry
- 1:18:00at first with Darrell Porter catching to do the Mickey bouncing ball slowly George
- 1:18:05short. Patek got a first base he's out. Good quick play by Freddie Patek to throw out
- 1:18:12Mickey Rivers and we'll step out for a station break on the New York Yankee home of
- 1:18:16the WMCA Strauss Communications in New York. This is Mel Allen. Emery goes to the places
- 1:18:25everyone else goes to as well as the places no one else goes to. Emery the Air Force in
- 1:18:33Air Prait. Greg Nuttles bats for the Yankees and the first pitch from Hastler to the left
- 1:18:40field. The ball occurred. Nuttles went 0 for 4 yesterday. Greg batted 255 on the season
- 1:18:48with 37 homers and 107 runs batted in. Porter goes out to talk to Andy Hastler. The season
- 1:18:58Hastler established personal highs in several categories. Nine wins 29 appearances 27 starts
- 1:19:05with 83 strikeouts. He was more effective during the first half of the year than he was
- 1:19:11over the last half going 6 and 2 at the All-Star break. He deals one and out of Nuttles. Low
- 1:19:18inside ball two. Nuttles came to bat four times yesterday. Flight out to left once popped
- 1:19:27a third line to the shortstop and popped to the shortstop. They bunch him up the middle
- 1:19:34of the outfield shaded toward right. To O'Deal. Swung on and popped high in the air to shuttle
- 1:19:42right. Back goes Frank White the second baseman settling. Unread and makes the catch. When
- 1:19:48took that ball back to Frank White's right but he stayed with it. Two down and Thurman
- 1:19:55Munson will step in. Munson had a third inning home run yesterday going one for four for
- 1:20:05the afternoon. Right hand hitter during the season Munson batted 308 he drove in 100 runs.
- 1:20:20He had 18 homers. They're fairly close together and even the batter's box. Passlers pitch
- 1:20:29to him. Fastball swung on in this strike one. Thurman Munson is hit safely in all six American
- 1:20:42League championship games in which he has appeared going 11 for 23. The 0-1 delivery.
- 1:20:49They sit in the left field. Running the ball down Joe Zeb Munson big turn at first puts
- 1:20:56on the brakes and scurries back as the throw comes in from the left fielders. So Munson
- 1:21:06is on the batter will be Reggie Jackson. That is the first hit of the ball game. Reggie
- 1:21:16Jackson was over four yesterday struck out his first trip. Plied to left pop to second
- 1:21:22and pop to the shortstop. Mayberry will hold Munson on the pitch to Jackson taken inside
- 1:21:33for a ball. One ball in those strikes. Reggie batted 286 for the regular season. He had
- 1:21:4432 homers and led the Yankees with 110 runs batted in. One O deal inside ball two. Two
- 1:21:55balls no strikes. Bobby Cox at first base and Dick Hauser at third on the coaching lines
- 1:22:01for the Yankees. Munson walks off his lead from first base. Mayberry holding the corner.
- 1:22:08Hassellor sets and the pitch to Jackson breaking ball misses. Jackson steps out and looks for
- 1:22:22a sign from Hauser. Now the three and old pitch swung on and it back ended by the third baseman
- 1:22:38Brett long throw and he is out at first base. They let Jackson go on three and only hit
- 1:22:44one right off the end of the bat on a late swing. Good play by the third baseman Brett
- 1:22:48to throw him out at the end of one inning. It's the Yankees nothing Kansas City nothing.

- 1:24:58games including selection of the announcers with the approval of the Yankees and this
- 1:25:02station. Amos Otis a right hand batter at 251 during the season. It's the first pitch
- 1:25:09and he had a right field. Reggie Jackson is there and makes a one hand catch one out.
- 1:25:17John Mayberry will step in. Mayberry was one for three yesterday drove in two runs with
- 1:25:23a home run left hand hitter with power. The regular season Mayberry hit two thirty.
- 1:25:34But he had twenty three home runs tied for the team lead and he drove in eighty two runs.
- 1:25:45The first pitch is hit high in the air to shuttle right back to second baseman Randolph
- 1:25:54and he makes the catch. He got Mayberry right in on the hands hand cut him on the swing
- 1:26:00and he set a weak pop up out of the shuttle right. So there are two down the batter will
- 1:26:06be Joe Zeb the left field here. Zeb was all for four yesterday. He batted 297 during the
- 1:26:14season and he got a five five times with 58 hits including two homers and twenty three
- 1:26:21runs batted in Ron Goodry on his slender shoulders rest the future of the Yankees in this championship
- 1:26:30series. He kicks and deals a fast ball is over strike one.
- 1:26:40One strike pitch fast and low. Goodry had to be the Yankees biggest surprise the season.
- 1:26:47Terrible spring training barely made the club started the season in the bullpen wound
- 1:26:52up as the Yankees most effective starting pitcher is one one deal. Swung on in this strike
- 1:26:58to. We've mentioned a good read was ten and two after the all star break including eight
- 1:27:05wins in a row led the Yankee pitching staff and shutouts is one to pitch. Check swings
- 1:27:14like three goals and that requires the side and order at the end of one and a half. It's
- 1:27:19tens of sitting out there and the Yankees nothing if you were to rate the importance of
- 1:27:24athletes foot on a scale of one to ten. What would you give it about a two. Let's face it's
- 1:27:29a dumb disease. Well we make desert and what do we mean when we say don't blame desert
- 1:27:34and simple. A lot of you are still suffering the itching and soreness of athletes foot
- 1:27:39as an ex's help millions get rid of it fast. So if you're doing sneakers and socks instead
- 1:27:44of running the sand through your toes then maybe this message is very important. Athletes
- 1:27:49foot don't blame desert and a product of Penwald Corporation. I'm a policeman and yesterday
- 1:27:56I had itching and shaping so bad I was pretty uncomfortable and then I found out those are
- 1:28:02the symptoms of jock itch. So I bought some crew ex medicated powder. Crew ex helped relieve
- 1:28:09the itching, chafing and rash and its medication helped fight the causes of jock itch. And
- 1:28:15remember you don't have to be a jock to get jock itch and you don't have to suffer either.

- 1:28:58Lou Penella leads off the bottom half of the second inning for the Yankees. Lou was one
- 1:29:03for four yesterday. Solid single his first time up. Right hand batter. Penella hit 3-30
- 1:29:10during the regular year. He taught the 300 mark for the fourth time in his career. They
- 1:29:22play as a poll hitter on the infield. Now Penella steps out as Hasler takes too much time.
- 1:29:28In 1969 playing for the then Kansas City A's Lou Penella was rookie of the year.
- 1:29:40It's like the owner of the Kansas City Royals Ewing Kaufman getting on Penella a little bit
- 1:29:48from his box seat near the third base dugout. Now the pitch to Lou straight across the middle
- 1:29:54of the plate strike one. Penella last year was runner up as comeback player of the year
- 1:30:04following an offseason due to an injury. Oh one delivery. Bowled out of play on the first
- 1:30:12base side back in the stands. Looks like we'll have a bigger crowd tonight than we had yesterday
- 1:30:18afternoon when fifty four thousand nine hundred thirty paid to see the first game of the championship
- 1:30:24series. Beautiful evening here in New York. Temperature at game time was sixty one degrees.
- 1:30:34Hasler winds the O2 pitch. Download a Penella. Freddie Pontiac is well over in the hole at
- 1:30:42the top of the plate. He's got a shot stop. Frank White shades towards second. Neither he plays
- 1:30:48very wide of the line at first and Brett guards behind the bag at third. The right fielder
- 1:30:54Cowan's fairly shallow against Penella. Otis and Zeb straight away to pitch. Swung on shot to short
- 1:31:02played on the second half by Pontiac. He guns at the first base in time. One out here in the bottom
- 1:31:08of the plate. Now clip Johnson will step in. Johnson the designated header had two hits
- 1:31:18yesterday. Single left center and single left in between he fly to right and fly to left.
- 1:31:26Strong right hand hitter who batted two ninety six during the season. Overall he had twenty
- 1:31:32three runs twelve. Ten as a Houston Astro. Johnson crowds the plate. Normally they try to pitch
- 1:31:44him inside and jam him. That one breaks right over the heart of the plate strike what is
- 1:31:50called. Johnson hurt his ankle sliding into second base yesterday but he stayed in the ballgame
- 1:31:59and of course is starting tonight as the designated hitter. Hasler works slowly now winds 0 1 pitch
- 1:32:06get on about to the second base by Frank White near the bag throws the first in time to get
- 1:32:12Johnson to down. And now Chris Chandler's Chandler's went one for three in yesterday's
- 1:32:22game. He also reached on a walk. Chandler's is hit safely in all six American League championship
- 1:32:30games in which he has appeared going 12 for twenty four left hand hitter slightly closed
- 1:32:40down. Hasler's first pitch to him inside gets away from the catcher Porter ball on. Porter
- 1:32:52stares out at his pitcher Hasler and Andy wants an exchange of baseballs. Porter gets
- 1:32:56another one from the plate on by a rust gets no score here in the bottom half of the second
- 1:33:05base. Neither team has had a genuine threat the Royals had a runner third with two outs
- 1:33:10in the first inning at Al Cowan struck out the Yankees have had only one base runner
- 1:33:15Thurman Monson in the first two single one out pitch bow back to the left side one ball
- 1:33:23of one strike. I'm Frank Messer along with a scooter Bill Rosino and Bill White at Yankee
- 1:33:31moving on to Kansas City following the ball game tonight to bring you all the action tomorrow
- 1:33:36night starting at eight ten one one pitch bowled again toward the seats on the third base side
- 1:33:47a ball and two strikes on Chris Chandler's and Darrell Porter goes out to the mound to
- 1:33:52talk to Andy Hasler. Hasler made four starts against the Yankees this past year he won
- 1:34:10one and lost three but puts better than his record would show his earn run average in those
- 1:34:15four games was 2.76 he winds the one to pitch check swing at its low and outside two balls
- 1:34:28and two strikes. Darrell Porter requested an appeal by the third base umpire Nick Bremengan
- 1:34:34who backed up the call saying yes ball to two and two when he ran off on deck to to the
- 1:34:42chambliss swing and a miss tried to stop it and could not that retires the side and order
- 1:34:48the first strikeout for Hasler at the end of two the Yankees nothing the Royals nothing

- 1:36:23McSawley's limited orange New Jersey we move on to the third inning of a Scottish
- 1:36:31ballgame here at Yankee Stadium and Darrell Porter the catcher will lead off for the Kansas
- 1:36:36City Royals Porter was one for two in yesterday afternoon's ballgame he walked his first two
- 1:36:42times up scored a run and grounded out the first and single to center field he's a left
- 1:36:49hand header he batted 275 during the season with 16 home runs and 60 runs batted in you'll
- 1:36:58be followed by Frank White and then Fred Patek.
- 1:37:04Goodry so far has walked one and struck out two men he has not allowed a base hit the left
- 1:37:09hander winds and the pitch to Porter breaking ball outside ball one they play Porter straight
- 1:37:16up the middle on the infield with Mickey Rivers a couple of steps toward right blue
- 1:37:20Panela straight away fairly shallow and left the pitches high two balls and no strikes Reggie
- 1:37:28Jackson plays straight away and right and now Panela takes two steps to his left and comes
- 1:37:33in a step in left field to pitch foul back and that'll be in the upper deck the Royals
- 1:37:44obtained Darrell Porter from the Milwaukee Brewers gave them a solid job behind the plate
- 1:37:50to one deal basketball inside ball three Porter appeared in 130 games this year.
- 1:38:01Goodry rocks and fires three and one and he walked in ball four was down low the second
- 1:38:07walk given up by Goodry all the Royals have the lead off man on Frank White their number
- 1:38:14nine hitter coming up and we'll see if manager Whitey Herzog goes for the sacrifice to try
- 1:38:20to set the table for the top of the batting order.
- 1:38:23White is a good but he went one four four yesterday right hand hitter he sacrificed
- 1:38:32eleven times during the regular season second high on the ball club he gives no indication
- 1:38:38as he takes a strike White steps out looks down at third base coach Chuck Miller Fred
- 1:38:47Pottack is on deck Chambliss holding Porter ran off in debt squeezed up the middle of
- 1:38:53double play depth the outfield is spread out the old one pitch swung on broken bat
- 1:38:58pop and a shallow left that may drop and does for the base it but not a grabs a bare handed
- 1:39:03throws to third cut by debt runners on the corners.
- 1:39:09Lou Penella charged in front of Mickey Rivers grabbed that ball bare handed to make the throw
- 1:39:14toward third base could have been an easier throw for the left hand throwing rivers but
- 1:39:20Penella grabbed the ball fired on and debt cut it off.
- 1:39:28All the Royals have runners on the corners on a broken bat single by Frank White their first hit
- 1:39:31of the ball game.
- 1:39:36All the Royals now have a genuine threat and the Yankees will play for the double play and
- 1:39:41give up the run if necessary.
- 1:39:43Randolph and that are back.
- 1:39:47Andres pitched a Pottack grounded foul at third base.
- 1:39:51Pottack grounded out to depth his first time up.
- 1:39:56Porter at third Frank White at first.
- 1:40:04Chuck Miller the coach at third talks to Porter.
- 1:40:10No balls and a strike on Pottack.
- 1:40:12We'll watch the runners they hold the pitches taken low for a ball.
- 1:40:16They're going to bounce and dug it up out of the dirt one ball and one strike.
- 1:40:21Hal McCrae is on deck.
- 1:40:27No score here in the top of the third.
- 1:40:30Porter at third Frank White at first.
- 1:40:35Chambliss of course holding White on runners hold the pitches fouled out of play in the first base crowd.
- 1:40:42Back into the upper deck a ball and two strikes on Pottack.
- 1:40:55Good read plants the left foot looks down for the side Pottack is outside the batter's box.
- 1:41:01Now moves back in.
- 1:41:06And the one and two pitch will be coming here it is lined up towards center field Mickey Rivers has it.
- 1:41:12Porter is tagged here he comes here comes the throw home it will not be in time.
- 1:41:17The ball was caught in fairly shallow center field by Mickey Rivers.
- 1:41:21Darrell Porter tagging a third scores after the catch and the Royals lead one to nothing.
- 1:41:26Frank White held it first a sacrifice fly to run but it in for Pottack his third RBI of the series.
- 1:41:35I believe the Yankees may make an appeal call to third base.
- 1:41:44We'll see nettles is standing near the bag and now nettles will wait for the ball to be put in play.
- 1:41:51Good read will step on the rubber then step off and the Yankees will make the appeal call to third base.
- 1:41:58Good read looks back there and sees nettles the right the left foot is on the slab.
- 1:42:04Now he goes through the motion steps off turns throws to third safe.
- 1:42:10He did not leave too soon.
- 1:42:17So the Royals lead by a score of one to nothing.
- 1:42:22Good call by the Yankee bench and the Yankee players to make the appeal Porter got off the bag in a hurry but now throw to first base no play on white.
- 1:42:31But it's ruled by third base umpire Nick Bremigan that he did not leave too soon.
- 1:42:39How McCrae the batter throw to first safe McCrae walked in the first inning set sail for second base.
- 1:42:46Once and throw beat him there McCrae.
- 1:42:49Well he gave Bucky that a karate chop and knock in the ball away and he was safe.
- 1:42:53He takes a strike.
- 1:42:55An error was charged to Bucky Dan and McCrae was ruled as a caught stealing technicality of the scoring rules.
- 1:43:03McCrae then tagged up and went to third on Brett's fly ball to center but died there when Colin struck out.
- 1:43:11White draws a throw to first and gets back.
- 1:43:17The Royals lead one to nothing here in the top of the third.
- 1:43:21Frank White at first one away.
- 1:43:24Good reset.
- 1:43:25White goes pitch out months and throw to second base and he is out at second.
- 1:43:30Bucky Dan took a short half throw from Fairland Munson and Frank White is thrown out stealing two to six.
- 1:43:41There are now two outs.
- 1:43:44He's gone down to the bottom one strike on Hal McCrae.
- 1:43:57Frank White stole 23 bases during the regular season but he has gone down here.
- 1:44:02One one to McCrae.
- 1:44:04Low two balls in a strike.
- 1:44:10The runner is George Brett the third baseman.
- 1:44:17Goodry takes the side and left hander winds and deals.
- 1:44:20Swung on and fouled off the middle of Munson.
- 1:44:23Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:44:27Played on by Russ Getz gets out the whisk room.
- 1:44:32Two outs the bases empty.
- 1:44:35The Royals have a run in the bank.
- 1:44:39Goodry looks into Munson.
- 1:44:42Left hander winds to two pitch fouled out of play in the upper deck and wheel pause for station identification on the New York Yankee home of champions radio network.
- 1:44:51WMCA Strauss communications in New York.
- 1:44:55This is Mel Allen.
- 1:44:57Emory has planes of its own that aren't too high and mighty to make local stops.
- 1:45:02Emory the Air Force and Air Freight.
- 1:45:08The ball is swung on and missed strike three and the side is retired.
- 1:45:12The Royals get one run on one hit.
- 1:45:14At the end of two and a half the score is Kansas City Water, the Yankees nothing.

- 1:47:05Last time I'll be granted into a double play that was almost a triple play on a ground ball to third base.
- 1:47:12Right hand hitter.
- 1:47:14They play him up the middle on the infield.
- 1:47:16The outfield is spread out with Collins shuttle and right is there deep and left.
- 1:47:21A pitch from Asler.
- 1:47:23Fast ball is low ball one.
- 1:47:29Bucky Dent is on deck and then Mickey Rivers here in the Yankee third.
- 1:47:34South Plainby.
- 1:47:35Hasler into the line.
- 1:47:37One O deal breaking ball is inside.
- 1:47:40Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:47:44The Royals are leading one to nothing.
- 1:47:49The series will be tomorrow night from Kansas City and eight ten broadcast eight o'clock pregame.
- 1:47:59Asler pumps and deals.
- 1:48:03Three balls and no strikes to what he ran off.
- 1:48:10Now Hasler wants to do baseball and gets it.
- 1:48:20Coach Elston Howard just paced from the home plate end of the Yankee dugout down to the first base end.
- 1:48:29The windout three O pitch taken for a strike three and one.
- 1:48:39Hasler is ready.
- 1:48:48Three one delivery strike two is called.
- 1:48:52Granda broke for first it is called back three balls two strikes.
- 1:49:03The ball game from the home plate end of the Yankee dugout on the steps three to pitch to Randolph.
- 1:49:11Chopper to third base second half played by Brett throws to first in time.
- 1:49:16Randolph is up one away here in the bottom half of the third the batter will be shot stop Bucky Dent.
- 1:49:26That will over three yesterday.
- 1:49:34Last time he was due up Roy White batted for him and grotted up.
- 1:49:39Bucky down to right hand hitter he batted 247 during the regular season.
- 1:49:49And the first pitch is on the way high ball one Brett the third baseman plays him in at the edge of the grass.
- 1:50:00Potts actually is a step or two toward the hole the outfield spread out shallow and right with a center field rotor shaded toward right field.
- 1:50:11The wind up in the one hole pitch strike called one ball one strike.
- 1:50:20Hasler got a breaking ball over.
- 1:50:29Only mine has a few words to say from the dugout steps the one one pitch to death bowled into the third base dugout.
- 1:50:36Wicked shot right into the royal dugout and Royals honor Ewing Kaufman up out of his box seed leaning over to see if anybody in his dugout was hurt.
- 1:50:53And he checked the TV monitor in the next booth.
- 1:50:55Count them off.
- 1:50:56They're all there.
- 1:50:58No towels being waved.
- 1:50:59No flags.
- 1:51:05Then steps out.
- 1:51:06Time is called.
- 1:51:14Now the one to pitch way outside from Hasler two balls and two strikes.
- 1:51:29Hasler works slowly now has the side pitches ground ball to third Brett shot hops it throws the first in time and there are two out.
- 1:51:43George Brett has come up with his third assist in the ball game and second in a row.
- 1:51:48The batter will be Mickey Rivers.
- 1:51:58Mickey at three twenty six over the regular season a career high.
- 1:52:03Last year he was third in voting for the most valuable player in the league the pitch.
- 1:52:08Inside ball one.
- 1:52:15Rivers also had a career high 12 home runs.
- 1:52:19This nineteen seventy seven season the one old pitch joins one on and foul back.
- 1:52:31Hasler accepts it.
- 1:52:32Your baseball strolls around the pitchers mound.
- 1:52:37The Royals are leading one to nothing here in the bottom half of the third two outs and nobody on Hasler so far as at the Yankees hitting the ball on the ground.
- 1:52:48Only one ball has been hit in the air.
- 1:52:51Bragg nettles pop up the one one pitch breaking ball is low two balls in a strike.
- 1:53:01There have been six ground balls.
- 1:53:03The one pop up and one strikeout the Yankees have one base at a single by Thurmondson.
- 1:53:09To one delivery to Rivers bouncing ball to the first base side mayberry has underhand flip to the pitcher.
- 1:53:19Hasler he's out on a close play.
- 1:53:21Rivers dances Hasler down the first base line as they collided at the bag.
- 1:53:22No harm is done.
- 1:53:23The Yankees are retired in order at the end of three innings.
- 1:53:26The score cans a city one on the Yankees.
- 1:53:28Nothing.

- 1:55:01We got to the fourth inning here at Yankee Stadium.
- 1:55:03The Royals lead one to nothing and in with a play by play ladies and gentlemen here is Bill White.
- 1:55:09Alright Frank Messer and George Brett who made a couple of pretty good plays.
- 1:55:14Bottom the third will lead off of the Royals here in the top of the fourth.
- 1:55:18It'll be Brett Alcowins and then Amos Otis against Ron Guidry.
- 1:55:22Yankee set up the Brett straight away.
- 1:55:25Brett's a left handed batter and a good hitter.
- 1:55:27It's 3-12 on the year for the Royals.
- 1:55:30Guidry's first pitch.
- 1:55:32Too high ball one.
- 1:55:34Brett went up and up one time this ball game.
- 1:55:37He's fly the rivers in center field looking for his first base hit in the 1977 American League championship series.
- 1:55:44The basketball hit on the ground. Randolph backhand throws on the first base.
- 1:55:49Good play by Willie Randolph going to his right backhanding the ball and getting Brett at first base.
- 1:56:00That'll bring on Alcowins.
- 1:56:03Cowins a right handed batter has been up one struck out.
- 1:56:06He liked Brett hit 3-12 with the Royals on the year.
- 1:56:09Cowins a little more productive. 23 home runs. 112 runs batted in.
- 1:56:14Also had a productive night last night against Yankee. He went 3-4.
- 1:56:19Hit a solo home run and scored two runs.
- 1:56:24Cowins has good power. First pitch to Cowins.
- 1:56:27Current balls a strike.
- 1:56:31Royals lead 1-0 in the top of the fourth. One out and nobody on.
- 1:56:36Each team with just one base hit. The Yankees have committed the only air in the ball game.
- 1:56:41Goodreads one strike. Pitches are called. Strike two. No balls and two strikes on Alcowins.
- 1:56:47On deck is Amazotus.
- 1:56:55Now Cowins backs out. Gets back here.
- 1:57:00Goodread reading signs from Mutson. Still looking. Time is called now as Cowins backs out again.
- 1:57:07There's some bugs flying around around home plate.
- 1:57:11Now Cowins sets. Goodreads ready. The two strike pitch.
- 1:57:15Fastball is fouled back. Cowins remains. No balls. Two strikes.
- 1:57:26Goodread gets a new ball. Doesn't bother to rub it up. Nor does he bother to go the rising bag. Doesn't use it too often.
- 1:57:35Now the two strike pitch to Cowins.
- 1:57:38Curve balls hung on and missed. Cowins goes down swinging for the second time in the ball game.
- 1:57:43And for Ron Goodread his fourth strikeout. And there are two outs.
- 1:57:49Now the ball is going to bring on Amazotus. The center fielder for the Royals. He's been up once. Guy to Reggie Jackson in right field.
- 1:57:57Otis was held endless last night. He went over four over one. Here he's over five in the series.
- 1:58:05Last night Hal McCrae did some damage with the two run home run. Freddie Potex more damage with the two run double.
- 1:58:12John Mayberry had a two run home run. Alcowins in a singleton.
- 1:58:17And this takes outside ball one. Royals one last night. Seven to two to take a one to nothing lead in the American League championship series.
- 1:58:27Yankees are going to come back in this one. They're down one nothing. Playing the top of the fourth with two outs. Nobody on.
- 1:58:34Fastball is one on a missed biotist. Pitch one and one.
- 1:58:38Here's John Mayberry. Tuckiller coaching third base for the Royals. Steve Borrell is at first. Here's a one one pitch to Otis.
- 1:58:52Swung on and missed. One and two.
- 1:58:57Kidry has a good live fastball tonight. Good dipping slider. Hard curve ball. He has walked two so far in the ball game and struck out four.
- 1:59:10He walked Porter leading off the third inning and that hurt him because Porter eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Freddie Potex.
- 1:59:22One and two on Otis.
- 1:59:27Kidry rocks and the one two pitch. Swung on. Fill the right center field after it is. Mickey Rivers still going once it down.
- 1:59:37Mickey Rivers along running the right center field made the catch in front of the three eighty five foot sign and the side has retired.
- 1:59:44Three up and three down at the end of three and a half. The Royals won the Yankees. Nothing.

- 2:19:53Hauser kicks back on the field and the guy on firing down the
- 2:19:57left field foul line Bill Deegan picks it up and puts it in
- 2:20:00his pocket one and two on Penella.
- 2:20:05Now Lou decides to take a walk.
- 2:20:11That's only that stung his hand a bit.
- 2:20:15Now he stands in Lou hits from a closed stance feet not too far
- 2:20:18apart.
- 2:20:21Here's a one to pitch swung on sliced foul back in the
- 2:20:25seats off the right side and the count remains one ball and two
- 2:20:29strikes on Penella last night Lou went one for four he
- 2:20:36chased Cowan up against the wall and right field last night
- 2:20:40Cowan's made a good grab on his long drive.
- 2:20:50Here's a one to pitch the Penella fastball bounce the second
- 2:20:54Frank White to his left digs it up throws on the first have got
- 2:20:57Penella and there's one away.
- 2:21:03That'll bring on Cliff Johnson the designated hitter.
- 2:21:12Cliff went to before last night he's over one tonight.
- 2:21:16Keep saying last night where said ballgame started at three
- 2:21:19that's what is that evening yesterday.
- 2:21:29Johnson standing and time is called now Porter is going to talk
- 2:21:33to Andy Hasler.
- 2:21:36He's the ballgame starting at two o'clock they start on 315 330.
- 2:21:48Now pot that comes in the shortstop wants to talk to
- 2:21:52Hasler.
- 2:21:55Of course pot that wants to know whether or not Porter is
- 2:21:58changing signs.
- 2:22:02Pot that can light like to know now pot that yelling over to
- 2:22:05white they must have changed signs.
- 2:22:07Maybe they think the Yankees have somebody out in center
- 2:22:09field with some glasses on swinging a miss by Johnson.
- 2:22:17The word about Gene Michael relaying the signs down to the
- 2:22:23Yankee bench with his walkie talkie of course all Michael
- 2:22:26does is when the Yankees run defense he tells him where to
- 2:22:30set the outfielders up one strike to Johnson's filed back
- 2:22:34going to Royals ahead one to nothing bottom of the fifth one
- 2:22:40out nobody on count no balls two strikes on Cliff Johnson
- 2:22:44has to watch the baseball and we'll get one from West Gets
- 2:22:48on deck as Chris Chambliss doesn't look like there's an empty
- 2:22:59seat here at Yankee Stadium.
- 2:23:02They had fifty four thousand nine hundred and thirty last night
- 2:23:05and I'm sure they're going to have more than that tonight
- 2:23:09like Pete Morris tells me there's some standing room
- 2:23:13here.
- 2:23:15He'll do to high one ball two strikes on Johnson.
- 2:23:21They call it SRO Johnson standing right on top of the play
- 2:23:33that playing him deep and left.
- 2:23:40He's got a lot of time.
- 2:23:43Now he rocks and the one two pitch swung on and popped up
- 2:23:46behind the plate coming back as Porter still coming near the
- 2:23:50screen and misses the ball.
- 2:23:53Porter misjudged the ball as the wind took it to his right
- 2:23:56as he was coming back towards us and Cliff Johnson has life
- 2:24:02and they'll call that a no play.
- 2:24:14Hi Jim Ogle here a long time rider with the Newark Star
- 2:24:17ledger now retired living down in Pompano Pompano Florida.
- 2:24:25He's my official score and Ogle called it a no play.
- 2:24:31Jim also takes care of the Yankee Alumni Association does a
- 2:24:36good job there.
- 2:24:39Now time is called as Johnson backs off and I something's
- 2:24:43wrong with Cliff's eyes.
- 2:24:44He wants a trainer to come on.
- 2:24:45He wants a towel and here comes Jean Monaghan with a towel
- 2:24:52and making sure that's all he wants.
- 2:24:54Russ gets over there with him.
- 2:25:00Johnson working hard swinging in the back doesn't have to put on
- 2:25:03any leather tonight.
- 2:25:09A lot of visitors are both Pam Boucher is here again.
- 2:25:20This Boucher with the Yankees in the public relations department.
- 2:25:29Now Johnson settles in backs out again.
- 2:25:31Now he's ready.
- 2:25:33A ball and two strikes on Cliff and a pitch.
- 2:25:38Swung on.
- 2:25:39Check swing line foul.
- 2:25:44Down the left field line still wanted to Johnson's bat went out
- 2:25:48toward the mound and that's what picked it up and gave it to him.
- 2:25:56The Yankees off tried much of the ball game only three balls have been
- 2:26:00hit in the air.
- 2:26:01Nettles popping to a second base in the first flying to center field
- 2:26:04in the fourth and Jackson flying to left field ending the fourth inning.
- 2:26:10Everything else has either been a strikeout and Hasler has two of those
- 2:26:13or ground ball except for months and single back in the first.
- 2:26:21A ground ball put out for Andy Asper in this ball game.
- 2:26:35Johnson still having trouble.
- 2:26:42And now they're bringing out a handkerchief for Cliff Johnson.
- 2:26:46He's got some allergies.
- 2:26:50I don't know.
- 2:26:57He's got him here when he gets in Canada City it'll be worse.
- 2:27:01One of the highest pollen counts in the world in that Missouri.
- 2:27:11Here's the one to the Johnson swung on it deep to center field going back as
- 2:27:17he's up against the wall and it's gone.
- 2:27:21John is just tied this ball game up and went up a drive to deep center field
- 2:27:29over the four seventeen mark and up against the stand.
- 2:27:35He's got ground.
- 2:28:02And now he's got a little vision here at Yankee Stadium for Cliff Johnson
- 2:28:08and the get around to put for Cliff Johnson and for his getting around
- 2:28:12triple Cliff Johnson receives getting his certificate look for the purchase of
- 2:28:16getting premium and flip comes up and docks is after the crowd again.
- 2:28:27Now maybe channels on as per towel and make a way.
- 2:28:43Now Johnson not waited has learned build it into center field for a home run
- 2:28:48and we've got a one one tie here in the bottom of the fifth.
- 2:28:53As Chambliss is waiting to hit against Andy Hasler.
- 2:28:59The only three-page hit in this ball game won by the Royals two by the Yankees.
- 2:29:07Now Chambliss stands and he's been up once and struck out.
- 2:29:14Here's Hasler's first pitch to Chambliss.
- 2:29:17The ball bounce slowly towards second charge by White digs it out underhand throw the
- 2:29:23got Chambliss White didn't bother to take the ball out of the glove just flipped
- 2:29:27it underhand it to John Mayberry for the second out.
- 2:29:31That'll bring on Willie Randolph.
- 2:29:38Hasler has been up once bounced a third.
- 2:29:50And as Hasler starts up Randolph backs out in time is called.
- 2:29:57Little gap for Randolph left center field Joe Zeb left field of playing straight away.
- 2:30:03He's in a couple of steps toward right.
- 2:30:08Randolph takes outside ball one.
- 2:30:12George Brett the third baseman playing Randolph even with the bag only doesn't bump that off.
- 2:30:19Hasler rocks and the one old pitch to Randolph swung on.
- 2:30:23Randolph takes a big turn around first the zip gets the ball over the head of the cutoff man
- 2:30:31and White the second baseman backs up and holding it first base is Willie Randolph.
- 2:30:40Oh he's beginning to get to Andy Hasler here in the fifth inning.
- 2:30:44Randolph on at first base two outs that'll bring on Bucky Dent.
- 2:30:50Bucky's been up once he bounced a third.
- 2:31:02All right handed it.
- 2:31:06Bucky over for the series so far looking for his first base hit.
- 2:31:10Hasler sets.
- 2:31:13Checks Randolph pitch to Dent line foul outside third base.
- 2:31:19Bucky gets out in front of a change up.
- 2:31:21No balls in one strike.
- 2:31:24The Yankees fans in the Yankees coming to life here in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 2:31:28Big flip Johnson got him on their feet by hitting a long home run into center field tying the ball game up at 1 1.
- 2:31:37Chambliss bounces second for out number two Randolph drilled one to left first single so he's on at first base
- 2:31:43and has a big lead there.
- 2:31:45He's dead backs out again as after takes too much time.
- 2:31:49Hasler bending forward looking for a son.
- 2:31:51Now he's straight and goes to first base and Randolph.
- 2:31:57They're going to call the ball.
- 2:31:59Hasler did not step forward first base and the first base umpire Jim McKean called the ball.
- 2:32:08Now George Brett the third base.
- 2:32:11The ball to Hasler.
- 2:32:15During the season left handed pitchers can get away with that move.
- 2:32:19They step toward home and throw the first umpire being a little more conservative and a little more concerned about that move during the American League championship playoffs.
- 2:32:29And also a block was called on Steve Feralten in the open of the national league championship playoffs.
- 2:32:37Randolph box the second base and here's the one strike pitch down a bucky death outside one and one right hander Mark Littell gets up and starts losing up in the Royals.
- 2:32:50And out comes Galen Cisco now the pitching coach for the Kansas City Royals.
- 2:33:07So Cisco out talking to Andy Hasler giving Littell a little more time to get loose.
- 2:33:13He's not going to take Hasler out still talking to him.
- 2:33:19Now Cisco spins you'll go back to the Royal dugout.
- 2:33:37One ball one strike on bucky death.
- 2:33:41Randolph down at second two outs and this horse tied one one in the bottom of the fifth pitch to Dennis Lowell two and one on deck is Mickey Rivers.
- 2:33:53Or this Yankee crowd really with it tonight.
- 2:33:57They want the Yankees to tie this series up at one game a piece to one pitch the bucky death outside three balls in a strong.
- 2:34:10Littell throwing hard down the Royal bullpen.
- 2:34:13He's in a hurry.
- 2:34:19Hasler bends.
- 2:34:21Now he's straight checks Randolph at second three one pitch to death.
- 2:34:25Swung on Luke the left after his.
- 2:34:54He got jam broke his bat loop one down the left field line that Joe Zett could not get to with two outs.
- 2:35:02Willie Randolph was off and running he scored easily and the Yankees have taken a two to one lead over the Kansas City Royals in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 2:35:13So bucky dead picking up his first base into the series is on a first base two outs and the batter will be Mickey Rivers.
- 2:35:23Every time the Yankee score runs and fans out at right field throw confetti down on the field so we're waiting now for the Yankee grounds crew to pick that up.
- 2:35:34Of course you would not like that to happen because it takes long enough to play a ball game anyway.
- 2:35:40It just lays a ball game another two or three minutes.
- 2:35:51The ball game is now on the field and the Yankee grounds are on the field.
- 2:35:56All the day three has been cleared off the field and Mickey Rivers now stepping in.
- 2:36:03Mickey has bounced the short and bounce the first close play at first base as Hasler just beat him to the back on a throw from John Mayberry.
- 2:36:13The Rivers all for two tonight.
- 2:36:16The Yankee takes outside ball one way in a third base George Brett way in on the grass.
- 2:36:25Mayberry has to hold in at first.
- 2:36:28Bucky is often asked to call it as the steal a base next pitch to Rivers one on and it's one and one on deck is Greg nettles.
- 2:36:41Yankees have picked up two runs on three bases here in the fifth.
- 2:36:51Rivers takes low two and one big play in the ball game so far.
- 2:36:57The ball called on Andy Hasler allowing Randolph to move from first to second and he scored on the looping single down the left field line by Bucky.
- 2:37:08Two one pitch to Rivers swung on and missed.
- 2:37:12Got a piece of it and it's held by Darrell Porter two and two.
- 2:37:18Mickey try to check his wing on a high fastball.
- 2:37:25Hasler taking a lot of time now the left hander sets to two pitch curveball hit slowly toward short charge by Potec flips on the second base and they get the four
- 2:37:36pitch curveball hit on Bucky and the side has retired but the Yankees come up with two runs on three bases.
- 2:37:42They need a man on base.
- 2:37:44At the end of five Yankees two the Royals one.
- 2:37:48You may have noticed that lead isn't the only thing missing.
- 2:37:52It's probably pretty low on performance too.
- 2:37:55That's because most unleaded just don't have a high enough operating rating to give you the performance you want.
- 2:38:00The performance you used to get from your regular.
- 2:38:03According to standards set by the American Society for testing and materials the people who set gasoline standards used by the federal and state government
- 2:38:11very few unleaded gasoline have a high enough octane to be called regular.
- 2:38:15To help you choose between them one usually sells for less.
- 2:38:19Get it.
- 2:38:23Get the unleaded regular gives you the three running engine with stuff in and unleaded plus the octane performance you want
- 2:38:30and you pay less than you would for most other make your unleaded.
- 2:38:34Now in a minute why settle for an unleaded gasoline that's below regular when you get one that's regular.
- 2:38:41Get it unleaded regular.
- 2:38:43Once again we've got what's best for your car.
- 2:38:48In 1915 the owner of Nicarbaca beer bought the Yankees.
- 2:38:52He opened Yankee Stadium, put roof, garage, DiMaggio and pinstripes and Yankee history was made.
- 2:38:58It was a man with a natural instinct for the best.
- 2:39:01You can taste it in Nicarbaca natural beer.
- 2:39:04We say Nicarbaca natural.
- 2:39:08Nothing should come between you and your beer.
- 2:39:13Two great traditions the Yankees and Nicarbaca from one great man Jacob Rupert in Orange, New Jersey.
- 2:39:19Well, top of the sixth coming up and the Yankees lead the Royals now by a score of two to one and Fred Frank White will lead off
- 2:39:28for the Royals against Ron Gidry.
- 2:39:32It'll be White Patek and then Hal McCrae against the left hander.
- 2:39:36Yankees coming back with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 2:39:40Fonella bounce star leading the inning off then Johnson.
- 2:39:43After stopping the ball game three or four times to wipe his brow finally hit a long home run in the center field.
- 2:39:51Tying the ball game up one of these chambers bounced out for the second off.
- 2:39:55Willy Randolph single was bought the second base and scored on a single by a bucky dent.
- 2:40:00The Yankees are carrying a two to one lead into the sixth inning.
- 2:40:03And here's the first pitch to Frank White.
- 2:40:06Swings and misses.
- 2:40:09White's been up one single to left field in this ball game.
- 2:40:13That's right in it.
- 2:40:14Nettles closes in a third base form.
- 2:40:16White has good speed.
- 2:40:18Yankee outfield playing him straight away.
- 2:40:25Gidry rocks and the one strike pitch swung on bounce foul outside third two strikes.
- 2:40:32Yankees have two runs on four bases.
- 2:40:34Soroyal is one run on just one base.
- 2:40:38One error in the ball game that charged a bucky dent when Hal McCrae ripped the throw months not of his hand.
- 2:40:44Curve is fouled back up against the screen.
- 2:40:47Still two strikes on White.
- 2:40:54Frank was one for four last time.
- 2:40:57One for one today.
- 2:41:02Two strike pitch swung on and missed.
- 2:41:05Stuck him out.
- 2:41:07Fifth strike off Iran.
- 2:41:09Gidry and there's one away.
- 2:41:11That'll bring on Freddie Patek.
- 2:41:13The little shortstop is bounced a third and driven in the royal run with a sacrifice fly to center field.
- 2:41:19Patek is a right handed battered moving on deck is Hal McCrae.
- 2:41:27First pitch to Patek.
- 2:41:29Get in the air right center after it is Rivers and Jackson.
- 2:41:32That ball is up against the wall.
- 2:41:34Patek around first digging for second.
- 2:41:36He holds there as the throw comes in the bucky dent.
- 2:41:41Ball found the gap between Rivers and Reggie Jackson hit at the base of the wall and Patek held its second base with a double.
- 2:41:49Patek second double the series.
- 2:41:51He's down there with one away in the batters.
- 2:41:53Hal McCrae.
- 2:41:55Now he's down there.
- 2:41:57He's down there.
- 2:41:59He's down there.
- 2:42:01He's down there.
- 2:42:03He's down there.
- 2:42:05He's down there.
- 2:42:07He's down there.
- 2:42:11McCrae has walked and struck out.
- 2:42:15He's over one.
- 2:42:19That wind is blowing from right from left toward right flags blown toward right field.
- 2:42:25Ball hit out that way will be helped of course.
- 2:42:33Now Goodry will have to keep an eye on Freddie Patek.
- 2:42:36Patek stole 53 bases during the regular season for the Kansas City Royals.
- 2:42:42McCrae takes down low ball one.
- 2:42:48Billy Martin on the top step of the Yankee dugout telling Buckethead to make sure to keep an eye on Freddie Patek.
- 2:42:55The one over to McCrae is high.
- 2:42:57Two balls no strikes.
- 2:43:03Yankee's lead two to one sixth inning.
- 2:43:06Patek down at second base one away.
- 2:43:09Goodry set.
- 2:43:10Set check spot.
- 2:43:12Two old pitch.
- 2:43:14Two and one on McCrae.
- 2:43:27Patek takes a walking lead off second base.
- 2:43:30Two one pitch.
- 2:43:32McRae is off the ball into the Royal dugout on the third base side.
- 2:43:35It's two and two.
- 2:43:45McCrae got the Royals off and running last night with a two run home runoff Don Gallant in the first inning.
- 2:43:51That was the only it he got but that was a big one.
- 2:43:54Royals one last night seven to two.
- 2:43:57Here's a two to pitch to McCrae.
- 2:43:59Kerr ball is sliced foul into the upper deck off the right side.
- 2:44:05Still two and two.
- 2:44:17Goodry gets new ball then scored looking for side.
- 2:44:21Randolph John to keep Patek close at second.
- 2:44:25Patek takes the ball and the pitch outside and high three and two.
- 2:44:34Goodry trying to keep the ball away from McCrae and McCrae stands back off the plate.
- 2:44:41Goodry sets.
- 2:44:44Pay off pitch.
- 2:44:46Ball four outside and McCrae walks.
- 2:44:51Patek runs at first and second one away in the batter is George Brett.
- 2:44:56Brett has fly to center field bounce to second he's 0 for two in the left handed batter.
- 2:45:16Good speed on the basis for the Royals Patek off second McCrae off first.
- 2:45:21Goodry sets and deals.
- 2:45:23Kerr ball is a called strike.
- 2:45:29Yankee in field back looking for two.
- 2:45:32Outfield playing straight away.
- 2:45:37The one strike pitch too high with a breaking ball it's one and one.
- 2:45:42Parkie Lyle gets up in the Yankee ball pen and starts throwing.
- 2:45:54Now Goodry sets.
- 2:45:57The one one pitch to Brett Kerr ball called strike two on the outside corner one and two.
- 2:46:10On deck Al Cowell.
- 2:46:13Goodry now backs off.
- 2:46:20Now he steps on the rubber looks for a side gets he's at the belt.
- 2:46:25One two pitch to Brett Kerr ball bouncing out of the third to second for one and McCrae takes and our Patek is going to try to score and he will score.
- 2:46:35The ball game is tied. McCrae knocked Randolph down through a rolling block on him and while Randolph was on the ground Patek scored from third base.
- 2:46:46And the ball game is tied one one.
- 2:47:01Now Billy Martin not arguing with second base umpire Marty Spring said he's saying that McCrae came out of the baseline and actually was out of the baseline when he knocked Randolph down after Randolph had put stuff at second base.
- 2:47:16And Martin Spring said I'd argue with the scores tied to two.
- 2:47:31They get the force at second base five four actually nettles had a lot of trouble getting that ball out of his glove had he gotten out right away the Yankees might have had a chance to turn a double play.
- 2:47:46Randolph stood in there at second base and how McCrae threw a rolling block on him.
- 2:47:51And knocked him behind second and then McCrae simply became entangled with Randolph and while they're on the ground Patek alertly scored from second base.
- 2:48:05So Brett is on it first. They're two outs and the scores tie. The batter will be Al Cowan.
- 2:48:23Now Martin has finished his discussion with Marty Spring said and Billy jogs back to the Yankee dugout.
- 2:48:33Let's take 15 seconds for station identification on the New York Yankee home of champions radio network.

- 2:49:07Mickey Rivers moving back. He's waiting and makes a catch and the side is retired.
- 2:49:14Royals tied up with a run on one base hit. They leave a man on base.

- 2:51:04The Yankees two in the Kansas City Royals two.
- 2:51:08Royals doing it on some tough base running by Hal McCrae. Winner in bold over will he ran off, he came entangled with Randolph and Freddie Pottek scored all the way for second base to tie the ball game up.
- 2:51:21Nettles has popped the second flight to center. He's 0-for-2 against Andy Astler.
- 2:51:28Here's Astler's first pitch to Nettles. Fastball is swung on and missed.
- 2:51:33Catfish Hunter throwing on the Yankee bullpen and right-hander Mark Littell throwing for the Royals.
- 2:51:43Astler winds and the one strike pitch.
- 2:51:46Nettles went too far on a breaking ball. No balls, two strikes.
- 2:51:51On deck is Thurman Munson.
- 2:51:54And the two strike pitch.
- 2:51:59Outside one and two.
- 2:52:06Left side of the Royal infield playing Nettles to pull. That's Brett the third baseman and Pottek the shortstop. The right side playing straight away.
- 2:52:14One two pitch. Swung on, fouled straight back.
- 2:52:18Yankees have two runs on four hits. The Royals have two runs on two basets.
- 2:52:25Sixth inning 2-2.
- 2:52:29One two to Nettles.
- 2:52:32Low and in the dirt.
- 2:52:34Nettles is the third base.
- 2:52:36Nettles wins on two basets. Sixth inning 2-2. One two to Nettles. Low and in the dirt. Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:52:55Russ gets his back set ball, flips it out and gives Porter a new ball to throw out to Astler.
- 2:53:01Two balls, two strikes on Nettles.
- 2:53:06Here's a 2-2 pitch. Swung on and pulled foul outside first base.
- 2:53:24Now Russ gets a new supply ball from the Yankee Fat Boy.
- 2:53:31A lot of balls being fouled off this ball game. Normally you go through about four dozen baseballs in a ball game.
- 2:53:40Here's a 2-2 to Nettles.
- 2:53:42Swung on and pulled foul outside first base.
- 2:53:48Here's a 2-2 to Nettles. Swung on and missed. Nettles goes after a high fastball out of the strike zone. One away.
- 2:54:00Third strikeout for Randy Astler.
- 2:54:03That'll bring on Mutson who is single and struck out. Thurman is one for two.
- 2:54:23Thurman taking his time getting set in the batter's box. Infield straightens up form, so does the outfield.
- 2:54:29Here's Astler's first pitch to Mutson. Curveball misses outside ball one.
- 2:54:36Thurman batted 308 for the Yankees. Jobin on it runs for the third straight year.
- 2:54:47Astler's 1-0 pitch. Swung on and missed. Curveball breaking down on Nettles 1-1.
- 2:54:57Lettell will stop working in the bullpen. He's watching the action. Hunter is still throwing for the Yankees.
- 2:55:08Boy, Gidry's pitching. Hunter just getting some work in. 1-1 to Mutson. Outside fastball 2-1.
- 2:55:15Gidry's given up just two base hits.
- 2:55:26Now Mutson backs out.
- 2:55:34Astler with a 2-1 to Thurman. High and away ball three.
- 2:55:40Not time is called. Darrell Porter, the catcher. Not talking to his pitcher.
- 2:55:53On deck is Reggie Jackson.
- 2:56:07And the Astler looking for some. Still looking. And finally shakes his head.
- 2:56:16Now he nods and deals a 3-1. Swung on line. Base hit. Left center field for Mutson.
- 2:56:24Thurman around first base and he's going to try. No, he stops.
- 2:56:31Mutson was going to try for two and took a big turn there but changed his mind and went back to first base.
- 2:56:38So Mutson's on it first. One away. And the batter is Reggie Jackson.
- 2:56:48Thurman picking up his second base hit in the ball game in the Yankees fifth.
- 2:56:53Jackson is still looking for his first. He's 0-2 in this ball game.
- 2:57:01Reggie was 0-4 last night so he's about to. Astler sets and a pitch. Swung on and fouled off.
- 2:57:19Mutson is now 15-30. 13-30. Thank you, Pam.
- 2:57:26And American League Championship Playoff Series. That's over two years. That's well over 400.
- 2:57:35Thurman some kind of clutch player. One strike pitch to Jackson. Inside it's one-on-one.
- 2:57:45Had a great World Series last year for the Yankees. Just overshadowed by Johnny Bitch.
- 2:57:52In fact, I don't even know if he were overshadowed by Bitch. Here's a one-one.
- 2:57:58Swung on and missed. A ball and two strikes on Jackson. On deck is Lou Pinella.
- 2:58:05Scores tied. Yankees two royals two playing the bottom half of sixth inning.
- 2:58:14Mutson with a short lead off first base. He's checked by Astler and the 1-2 to Jackson.
- 2:58:19He checks. Swing takes it down low at 2-2.
- 2:58:37Royals with their in-field back looking for 2-2 except for Mayberry. He's holding Mutson at first base.
- 2:58:44Astler once again takes a lot of time. Now he sets. 2-2 pitch to Jackson.
- 2:58:55Her ball is inside. Three balls, two strikes.
- 2:59:00Well, the count three and two will Martin run Mutson or we let him stay at first base.
- 2:59:07Jackson strikes out quite a bit. Sometimes that dictates what a manager will do in this situation.
- 2:59:14Let's see. Astler sets. Checked Mutson. Mutson's going. Pitch is in and near.
- 2:59:21Shallow center coming on is Amazota backing up as Frank White and the second base but White makes a catch.
- 2:59:29Mutson goes back to first base. Two outs to batter now is Lou Pinella.
- 2:59:42Pinella is over two in this ballgame against Astler. He's bounced a short, bounced a second.
- 2:59:51Now White, Herzog bounces out of the Kansas City Royal dugout. He's walking out to the mound. He wants a right-hander.
- 2:59:58He wants a pitching change. Mark Letell. You know, Andy Astler has certainly pitched well against Yankees. Yankees beat him.
- 3:00:05They've beaten Astler seven out of eight times. But Astler has given up less than three runs per ballgame to the Yankees.
- 3:00:16And he'll leave here and he has no chance of winning this ballgame. Of course, he's quite fortunate that the Royals tied in last inning
- 3:00:25as Alba Gray made a heads-up play tumbling over at Willier-Andoff and Potec score from the second base and tied up.
- 3:00:31If it were not for that, Astler would have a chance to lose this ballgame. But the new pitcher. And he's Mark Letell.
- 3:00:38And Letell is making his way to the mound.
- 3:01:00You want to feel good? Then you just gotta come to Geno's. Because that's where you'll find Colonel Sanders' Kentucky Fried Chicken.
- 3:01:08Golden Brown and Finger-Lickin' Good.
- 3:01:22They go together. Kentucky Fried Chicken and Geno's. So come on. Come to Geno's and feel good.
- 3:01:44So Astler leaves and right-hander Mark Letell is now pitching for the Kansas City Royals. Yankees have a runner at first base.
- 3:01:55They're two outs and the score is tied 2-2.
- 3:02:01Recapped to scoring for you. The Royals got off first after Porter walked in the third inning. Frank White looped the single in the shallow left center.
- 3:02:11Breaking his bat, Porter going to third. Then Freddy Potec and a line drive to Mickey Rivers in center.
- 3:02:17And Porter tagged up and scored. And the Royals led 1-0. Yankees picked up two runs in the fifth inning after Penella bounced out.
- 3:02:25Cliff Johnson hit a long home run to center. Field of Tide and won a piece. Then Champlers bounced out.
- 3:02:30When he ran off, lined a single to the left field. He was balked to second base by Andy Hassler and scored on a single to left field by Bucky Dent.
- 3:02:40That made it 2-1 Yankees. Then in the top of the inning, the Royals tied it.
- 3:02:46After White struck out, Freddy Potec doubled. Al McCrae walked. And when George Brett bounced one to Lettuce,
- 3:02:53Lettuce had a little trouble getting the ball out of his glove. What's the second base for the force on McCrae? And McCrae just bowled over.
- 3:03:00Now, will he ran off and stayed with Randolph? And Potec alertly scored all the way from second base to tied it to a piece.
- 3:03:07So that's where we are with two outs. Dent on it first, Mutson on it first base. And the batter is Lou Penella.
- 3:03:14And the pitch to Penella. Swung on. Base hit past Brett. Mutson digging around second base. You'll go to third.
- 3:03:21And the throw will be in at second. And Mutson goes in at third base at Brett. And Brett gets out of the way.
- 3:03:28Now Brett Mutson talking over third. Mutson and Yankee team captain. He says, I gotta lead the way. And he's telling Brett to stay out of my way.
- 3:03:43So the Yankees outrunners at first and third. Two outs to batters. Cliff Johnson. Cliff Johnson is bouncing second and hit a home run.
- 3:04:05Solo home run back in the fifth inning. Lou Penella on it first. There Mutson on it third. Two outs. Four tied. Two, two in the sixth inning.
- 3:04:20Pitch to Johnson. And he moves back from the fastball it's up and in. On deck is Chris Chambliss. A left hander, Steve Mingori.
- 3:04:39And a right hander, Marty Patton getting loose for the Royals. Here's a set by Letell. The one over Johnson.
- 3:04:49The inside, curve ball got the inside corner one and one. Cliff packed off that breaking ball. Yankees with the go ahead run down at third base.
- 3:05:09Pitch to Johnson. Taking a short lead off first. Two outs. Now time is called. One and one on Johnson.
- 3:05:31Letell at the belt. The one one pitch.
- 3:05:46Line left field. That is a fair ball. Mutson scores. Penella going to third. And Johnson will go on to second base with a stand up double in the Yankees. Now it hit three to two.
- 3:06:16And he hung it on the inside corner. Johnson backed off and lined it to left field. Mutson scored easily. Penella went to third.
- 3:06:35And Johnson down at second with a double. Yankees now lead at three to two. And the batter is Chris Chambliss. And on deck is Willie Randall.
- 3:06:47And the Royals are going to have to decide what to do to Chambliss. Do they pitch to him or do they put him on? Looks like they want to put him on. They load the bases up.
- 3:06:55They don't know how they want to do it. A little pot check. That started and he just picked up an object and threw it out.
- 3:07:09They're going to pitch to the Yankee ball boy. Royals are going to put Chambliss on the load the bases. There's ball one outside. They're going to pitch to Willie Randall. Yankees have three runs on seven bases.
- 3:07:28And the Royals two runs on two bases against Ron Guidry. Key game for the Yankees and the Royals. Yankees need to tie the series in one game apiece. And the Royals need it because they'd like to go back to Kansas City with a two loving advantage.
- 3:07:46They have ball four to Chambliss. And the bases are loaded. Bases loaded two outs for Willie Randall. Randall has bounced a third, singled and scored. Lettel sets.
- 3:08:12And the Chambliss is going to pitch to Willie Randall. Her ball is too high ball one. Now Darrell Porter calls time. He's going on talking to Mark Lettel.
- 3:08:40And the Chambliss is set by the right hander and the 1 0 pitch to Randall. No, that's a strike. On the knees. Willie didn't like the call. He backs out. And it's one and one. One ball and one strike to Randall. Bases loaded two outs.
- 3:09:09And the Chambliss is at the belt. The 1 1 pitch. Swung on and missed. The third ball. A ball and two strikes.
- 3:09:26And the Chambliss is at the third base. Flip Johnson down at second. Chris Chambliss at first. As Lettel sets. The 1 2 to Randall. Swung on. It right to Brett. He's going to score.
- 3:09:42Swung in the second base is Willie Randall. And the Yankees no lead five to two. We'll wait on a scoring decision on that smash through George Brett.
- 3:10:12Look what that ball was away from Randall. We went on and got it and hit a smash through the legs of George Brett scoring two runs. And we're still waiting on the official scores ruling.
- 3:10:30And with runners at second and third two outs Yankees leading five to the batters. Bucky did.
- 3:10:45An error charge the third base with George Brett. So Randall cannot get any runs battered in. Runs count on the board. The Yankees lead at five to here's that.
- 3:11:01Lettel sets deals to death and it's outside ball one. Here by third base with George Brett. Let's send two rounds. One old fouled back in out of play. It's one and one.
- 3:11:28We're away. Here's our wet and got starter Andy Hasler.
- 3:11:38With much not at first base and two outs.
- 3:11:44Lettel gave up a single to Penella. Run scoring double to Johnson. Did. Tried to hold up and did hold up. Two balls in one strike. Then Chambers was intentionally passed and Randall drilled one through the legs of George Brett.
- 3:12:03Scoring two more runs and the Yankees lead at five to the count two balls in the strike on Bucky. They sit here might break this ball game open. Lettel sets and the two won the death swung on and missed two and two dead Joe.
- 3:12:23Then I run his last time up with a single left field.
- 3:12:35Now let's tell us at the bell to two pitch low ball three on deck is Mickey Rivers and if the tell doesn't get that you know that her sorrow brought to the bullpen bring on me and go to pitch the rivers. Now let's tell sets.
- 3:12:54They are pitched to death swung on popped up right side Frank White the second baseman back enough. He's there makes a catch and the side is retired. But the Yankees pick up three big runs in the bottom half of six inning and at the end of six the Yankees lead the Royals five to two.

- 3:15:24Bill White just gave me the sign for station break so we'll pause for station identification on the New York Yankees home of champions radio network WMCA Strauss communications in New York.
- 3:15:35This is Mel Allen if Yankee pitchers want to see someone with a really great delivery they ought to call Emory Emory the Air Force and Air Prait.
- 3:15:53Here we go. Top of the seventh Yankees leading five to two the Royals who are losing confidence all day yesterday and all last night giving out stories to the paper how much better they are than the Yankees.
- 3:16:15Right now they're taking a back seat to the bombers as Amos Otis steps in.
- 3:16:30Otis is looking for his first base set of the series he's flying to right and flying to center and Gidry's pitch is high ball one is Otis blocked the bun.
- 3:16:47We're in the top of the seventh even Keith Morris is excited tonight. Very usually very cool calm and collected as Mr. Morris but.
- 3:17:02Oh man I by getting the higher than this I'll start flying over Yankee Stadium.
- 3:17:08The pitch is low and Otis moving around a lot in the batter's box it's two and oh they want to take a look at that ball.
- 3:17:25The basket looks at it flips it back to Gidry. It'll be Otis Mayberry and Zep.
- 3:17:43Otis makes everybody wait out there look at Billy Martin yelling at Otis get in the batter's box.
- 3:17:49Oh that Billy he can't sit still and I don't blame him this a big big ball game the two pitch right down the middle strike call Otis looking right at Martin now as Martin's yelling at him.
- 3:18:03Oh they're staring daggers at each other.
- 3:18:10Otis keeps stepping out stepping back in two balls in a strike run Gidry winds the pitch line to center Mickey Rivers right there and make makes the catch.
- 3:18:29That's what the Yankees were doing last night hitting the ball on the nose but right at somebody who's excited.
- 3:18:36No this is boy I'd tell you just like last year the playoffs was so much more exciting than the World Series.
- 3:18:46I can say that goes the Yankees lost four in a row to Cincinnati.
- 3:18:51Big John Mayberry popped the second bounce to first getting a little cool here at the stadium.
- 3:19:04As Gidry winds the pitch to Mayberry check to swing is down low ball one.
- 3:19:09They have put the infrared lamps on here but the heat doesn't come down to where we're sitting.
- 3:19:16Bart Lucci gets it and whoever's sitting above Jim Ogle sitting above him and he's getting a heat.
- 3:19:21Jim Ogle paying us a visit from Florida swing and a miss one on one.
- 3:19:30Jim who followed the Yankees for so many years one of their biggest boosters has retired from the Newark Star Ledger moved to Florida but can't stay away.
- 3:19:43Gets in your blood.
- 3:19:47One one pitch broken bat line a dead leaps got it.
- 3:19:51Oh Yankees can't do anything wrong now that bat broke almost in half and the Bannon out Joe Zeb that spells ZDB.
- 3:20:03He has struck out fly to right.
- 3:20:22Two men are out.
- 3:20:23Nobody on Yankees lead by two.
- 3:20:26There's a fastball in their strike one call.
- 3:20:30This run Gidry all year long has been saving the Yankees.
- 3:20:39The ball upstairs and out of play the pitch strike three call.
- 3:21:00One Gidry chalks up is six strike out of the ball game three up three down at the end of six and a half the Yankees five and the Royals two.
- 3:21:12Thank you sir.
- 3:21:13You know you're a very fascinating man.
- 3:21:15I am probably the most interesting man I've ever met.
- 3:21:18Oh well we we haven't exactly met.
- 3:21:20I just came in for a hamburger and you're paying with a personal check.
- 3:21:23I'm sorry I just don't seem to have any cash.
- 3:21:25It's OK but your S's and G's they just don't go with the Lincoln savings bank.
- 3:21:30You're a regular bundle of contradictions.
- 3:21:32I'm an accountant.
- 3:21:33You've got real macho S's and G's.
- 3:21:35You're a racing car driver.
- 3:21:37No really I'm an accountant.
- 3:21:38Oh well that explains this Lincoln savings bank check.
- 3:21:41Careful about money making every penny counting just like that.
- 3:21:45But look at that why.
- 3:21:46Where.
- 3:21:47About sixty five cents.
- 3:21:48That's an impetuous why you're a very impulsive person.
- 3:21:51Yeah I switched to the Lincoln on impulse it just struck me that my money belongs in the Lincoln savings bank instead of a spending bank.
- 3:21:58No minimum balance requirements even in my savings account it's free.
- 3:22:01You also have a fantastic sense of humor.
- 3:22:03Oh free checking at the Lincoln savings bank instead of a spending bank.
- 3:22:07Yeah.
- 3:22:08You better write another sample.
- 3:22:10Like what.
- 3:22:11Like a check for the tip.
- 3:22:12The Lincoln savings bank member FDIC.

- 3:22:46I we get ready for the bottom of the seventh inning the Yankees in front five to two.
- 3:22:52And Mickey Rivers will lead it off for the Yankees.
- 3:22:56Mick has not had a base at tonight he was three before last night he's bounced ashore twice and bounced to first.
- 3:23:04George Brett moves way in a third.
- 3:23:09Mix about due to hit a ball or more chop right over his head Yankees sent eight men to the plate last inning to score three runs.
- 3:23:17A big error by George Brett pitch to Mickey he fouled it just below a strike one.
- 3:23:29These Yankee fans have been very patient.
- 3:23:40One strike pitch fouled him back of the plate nothing in two.
- 3:23:54On deck Greg Nettles.
- 3:24:02Nobody out nobody on bottom of the seventh.
- 3:24:06The kick high and it's one ball two strikes.
- 3:24:22The tail winds high inside two and two.
- 3:24:27Let's say the Littell brush Cliff Johnson back and Cliff who has been the key man for the Yankees tonight.
- 3:24:36Single to drive in a run high fly center field aim a soda cruising under it he'll one handed and does one out.
- 3:24:48Now Greg Nettles Greg looking for his first base hit of the playoffs was over four yesterday.
- 3:24:57Oh for three tonight tonight he has popped a second line to deep right center and struck out.
- 3:25:15Pitch to Nettles a curve a little high ball one.
- 3:25:23Well always about the seventh inning have a lot of excitement in the stands swing and a miss couldn't check it.
- 3:25:37You know whenever the Red Sox are here playing the Yankees has a lot going on in the stands and now the Royals will be the same way.
- 3:25:45There's going to be some rivalry through the years.
- 3:25:47Check swing grounds at a first may bury up where they will make the play unassisted.
- 3:25:52And Greg has really been off stride.
- 3:25:55He's trying to check a swing lot of half swings to out and Thurman Munson who started the big rally for the Yankees last inning.
- 3:26:03Thurman is two for three tonight. He has hit in every playoff game the same as Freddie Patek.
- 3:26:10Both years Chris Chambliss can do it if he gets a hit his next time up.
- 3:26:18He's hitting every game but this one.
- 3:26:24Pitch to Thurman swing and a miss strike one.
- 3:26:39He's going to get a little bit of a tell. Two out nobody on basketball line a left center and that's in for a base hit.
- 3:26:55Hold us over there backhand that was going to try for second.
- 3:26:59But he slid head first and Patek tags him out.
- 3:27:04He's going to get months and trying to stretch it. I thought for a moment that Thurman was going to barrel in and knock Patek into the left field seats but he went head first.
- 3:27:15So for the Yankees no runs they hit no errors nobody left at the end of seven the Yankees five in the Royals two.

- 3:29:24Would you spell out for me please.
- 3:29:28A T H A N.
- 3:29:31Dan Watten.
- 3:29:38John.
- 3:29:41I thought you told me done.
- 3:29:45There it is on the back of that sheet right there.
- 3:29:49It's John.
- 3:29:51We are going to Floridian and.
- 3:29:54Keith Morris who lives in the Ritzie sex in upstate New York.
- 3:29:59Sounded like done.
- 3:30:04So John Watten making his first appearance.
- 3:30:11Ron Goodry.
- 3:30:14Ready to pitch.
- 3:30:16He's batting for Darrell Porter Porter had walked and scored and line the second base.
- 3:30:21But Whitey Herzog now looking for some right hand hitters.
- 3:30:25Frank White is on deck.
- 3:30:27He takes the deep breath.
- 3:30:29The pitch to Watten is in their strike one call.
- 3:30:42Hi outside one on one.
- 3:30:48We're in the top of the eighth inning.
- 3:30:50Yankees trying even up.
- 3:30:52I had one on one.
- 3:30:54The American League playoffs.
- 3:30:56Swing and a miss a good fastball that tailed away from Watten.
- 3:31:01One ball two strikes.
- 3:31:07Big right hand batter.
- 3:31:13Here's a pitch struck him out.
- 3:31:16He blew that fastball right by him.
- 3:31:19Right guard number seven.
- 3:31:22Ron Goodry right on target.
- 3:31:25He's averaged a little over seven strikeouts for nine innings this year.
- 3:31:29Frank White has singled to help build a run in the third and then struck out in the fifth.
- 3:31:36One out nobody on pitch to Whitey strike one called.
- 3:31:50On deck Freddie Patek.
- 3:31:53Goodry's next pitch foul upstairs and out of play.
- 3:31:58Nothing in two.
- 3:32:06Goodry walks back on the grass and back of the mound.
- 3:32:14Frank White behind on the count no balls two strikes.
- 3:32:18Wind up by Goodry and the pitch popped up shallow right field.
- 3:32:23Jackson moves in and one hands it.
- 3:32:26Order the nonchalant that one two away.
- 3:32:31And now Freddie Patek he's bounced the short hit a sacrifice fly to his drive in a run and doubled and scored another run.
- 3:32:39Patek has hit in every game in the playoffs for Kansas City last year in this year.
- 3:32:52Two out nobody on pitch by Goodry high ball one.
- 3:33:07On deck Hal McRae.
- 3:33:10Foul back to the screen.
- 3:33:13One ball one strike.
- 3:33:22Time called.
- 3:33:24While Patek gets set in the box.
- 3:33:30Goodry takes the deep breath.
- 3:33:34Patek gets in delivers foul back and out of play.
- 3:33:40One ball two strikes.
- 3:33:44Eddie Goodry is throwing as hard right now as he was in the first inning.
- 3:33:49Amazing where this kid gets his stamina and speed.
- 3:33:54He weighs about 150 pounds.
- 3:34:00One two pitch high fly straight away center Mickey Rivers cruising in under it.
- 3:34:06Makes the catch in a one two three inning.
- 3:34:10Nothing across at the end of seven and a half Yankees five in the Royals two.
- 3:34:18When you're going places in the heartland of America.
- 3:34:34Ozarks nonstop and direct flights can really make it.
- 3:34:49Why direct to central Illinois on Ozark jets and avoid changing planes called your professional
- 3:35:08travel advisor or Ozark on the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 3:35:20And the first batter will be Reggie Jackson.
- 3:35:38The third fly to left and pop the second.
- 3:35:53The other Yankees are coming through the clutch hits by Cliff Johnson a tremendous home run in the center field
- 3:36:00and a single to give the Yankees their go ahead run and then the error by Brett lead in two more.
- 3:36:08I let tells pitch to Jackson curve over strike one call.
- 3:36:13It'll be Jackson Penella and Johnson.
- 3:36:26One strike pitch in their strike to Jackson was bailing out and a breaking pitch came over.
- 3:36:37Yankees have done a great job on George Brett to lead the league in batting last year and this year finished at 3 12.
- 3:36:45He's looking for his first base out of the series.
- 3:36:50The two strike pitch powled back on the screen he tried to slip the fastball by Reggie.
- 3:37:11All right nothing in to the count wind up and outside one ball two strikes.
- 3:37:30Nobody out nobody on bottom of the eighth Yanks in front five to the tail kicks delivers its low two and two.
- 3:37:46Outfield really deep on Reggie in all fields left center and right.
- 3:37:58The tail gets the sign and the pitch line drive base hit right field.
- 3:38:04So Jackson gets his first hit of the playoffs very opportune moment leading off the bottom of the eighth.
- 3:38:13That's the third hit off the tail.
- 3:38:26Lou Penella the better Lou is bounced a short bounce the second single a left and score.
- 3:38:32He got a clutch two out single in the sixth inning to keep the Yankee rally alive.
- 3:38:52My time is called as a ball is thrown off the field by Freddie Patek Penella the better nobody out Jackson at first.
- 3:39:05Mayberry holding a mind Yankee is leading five to bottom of the eighth stretch by Lattell throw the first base Reggie back easily.
- 3:39:19I tell you why he heard Zog made himself out to be a genius in yesterday's game but I think tonight he pulled a big booboo when he took Hasler out when he did.
- 3:39:31There goes Jackson swinging a missed road a second Jackson safe.
- 3:39:35Holy cow that Jackson has got the most unbelievable stolen base record that leg in all he steals another base.
- 3:39:46Jackson was only thrown out three times all year and now Penella went down to talk with Dick Hauser.
- 3:40:00One strike Jackson is amazing when he steals he picks the time and something in back of Amos Otis and center field Reggie Jackson playing with a bad leg.
- 3:40:29He's that second with nobody out.
- 3:40:31See if Penella now was in a good right field hitter whether he's going to hit or a punt he's hitting and it's inside.
- 3:40:38He was trying to go to right but it's one on one.
- 3:40:41The tell now will try and pitch Lew inside so he can't hit the ball to the right side.
- 3:40:47But Penella was a great student of hitting.
- 3:40:54The stretch by the right ender and the pitch he's tried to go to right boy I tell you he ran up on the ball just try to slap at the right but missed it.
- 3:41:03And it's a ball and two strikes.
- 3:41:14Nobody out.
- 3:41:23Jackson leading away.
- 3:41:25The tell comes down slowly the pitch to Penella fly ball at deep center.
- 3:41:30That'll get Jackson over he's tagging Otis under it makes the catch throw the third base not nearly in time.
- 3:41:38Jackson's slide didn't have to.
- 3:41:40So Reggie does his job Penella does his job and the Yankees have another running with scoring position for big clip Johnson.
- 3:41:49That is not a sacrificed life but a good play by Penella.
- 3:41:56And here is Johnson.
- 3:41:58Listen to this proud standing ovation.
- 3:42:01For clip Johnson.
- 3:42:06Beautiful beautiful music.
- 3:42:11Johnson.
- 3:42:21Driven in two runs and scored two.
- 3:42:23And the infield is in.
- 3:42:27His double was off let tell.
- 3:42:30In the sixth inning.
- 3:42:32Jackson leads off third.
- 3:42:34It's the Johnson's.
- 3:42:36What a cut he had but he missed.
- 3:42:40He was going for downtown.
- 3:42:45Not really downtown that's uptown.
- 3:42:48Downtown is in back a home plate.
- 3:42:50He was going for the upper Bronx.
- 3:42:54What a cut he had at that one on deck Chris Chambliss only one out.
- 3:43:05Johnson really did a job just Friday is home run.
- 3:43:09He's got a good job.
- 3:43:11Dabbing at his eyes making hassle of weight.
- 3:43:14I think the weight got to him.
- 3:43:17The tell pitching from a stretch position checking Jackson.
- 3:43:21Swing and a foul tip held by Watten and look he swung so hard he ended halfway down the first bases momentum.
- 3:43:30It's 0 and 2.
- 3:43:32Johnson limping back.
- 3:43:33He does have that bad right ankle.
- 3:43:36Little knee bend.
- 3:43:39Johnson's an excellent actor.
- 3:43:45Looking for a little sympathy from let tell.
- 3:43:48Lipping around.
- 3:43:51He might get it too.
- 3:43:55Nothing in two on clip.
- 3:44:00The tell looks in for the sign.
- 3:44:07Steps off the rubber.
- 3:44:11And the crowd booze.
- 3:44:20No balls two strikes one out.
- 3:44:22Yanks in front five to bottom of the eighth Jackson leading off third.
- 3:44:26Pitch the chance almost a wild pitch good backhand grab by Watten.
- 3:44:35Reason that's a tough name for me to say Watten.
- 3:44:42He's missing a letter.
- 3:44:44And they'll.
- 3:44:49Get ready again.
- 3:44:59Yankee crowd.
- 3:45:04Standing ovation for striking out.
- 3:45:09And now the big meeting on the mound with Chandler's up again last time up with men on.
- 3:45:15They walk Chandler's intentionally and then Randolph hit the ground of that Brett booted allowing two runs to score.
- 3:45:22And everybody remembers the dramatic confrontation between let tell and Chandler son of a gun they're going to walk him again.
- 3:45:31When Chandler's hit that dramatic home run to win the pennant for the Yankees but they're going to give him another intentional walk.
- 3:45:41Kansas City pitchers have been stingy with their walks.
- 3:45:45Squidward walked only one man that was Chandler's in the ninth inning of the first game yesterday they took him out and Chandler's the only man to walk in this game.
- 3:45:56And bottle you want the station break so we'll give it over will pause for a station identification on the New York Yankees homework champions radio network.
- 3:46:05WMCA Strauss communications in New York.
- 3:46:09This is my album.
- 3:46:11If you have a package that has to get somewhere fast call in the Air Force Emory the Air Force and Air freight.
- 3:46:25All right Willie Randolph who hit that hot shot that went right through the legs of George Brett Willie is single and bounce the third.
- 3:46:40It's time that Whitey Herzog has tried to use strategy is backed by it on the night.
- 3:46:56Big base hit.
- 3:47:11That has driven in a big run in this game.
- 3:47:26The pitch we need to miss one on one.
- 3:47:43Here.
- 3:47:58One strike on Buckington pitch to Buckington foul upstairs and out of play two balls two strikes two out two men on Yankees leading six to two.
- 3:48:22We're in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 3:48:38Mark Littell in relief of Andy Hasler the pitch foul that'll be back and out of play.
- 3:48:53Another beautiful game against the Yankees.
- 3:49:09And the play down by Russ gets wants a more baseball still two and two on Buckington.
- 3:49:31And by Littell the pitch outside three and two so Chambliss and Randolph will be off and running three and two and two out.
- 3:49:45Yankees were held at just one hit to the first four and a third innings.
- 3:49:51Now have 10 base hits.
- 3:49:53And the game is half but two the stretch the runners go the pitch low ball for the bases to load it.
- 3:50:01And here comes why the Hertzog will make another brilliant move.
- 3:50:15And Hertzog wants a left hander to pitch to Mickey Rivers.
- 3:50:21And nothing like he has done tonight has been right.
- 3:50:29So Littell leaves.
- 3:50:35And we'll see who the left hander is coming on.
- 3:50:42To recap this game for you the Royals scored first in the third inning when Darryl Porter walked Frank White had a broken bat single.
- 3:50:50The shallow left center that advanced Porter the third and he scored on a sacrifice fly by pot.
- 3:50:56And the Yankees went ahead two to nothing.
- 3:51:00When Cliff Johnson with one out in the bottom of the fifth home in the deep center field bleachers with two out Randolph single.
- 3:51:09Then single Randolph went to second on a book and scored on Bucky then single Yankees led two to one.
- 3:51:16The Royals tied it up in the top of the sixth.
- 3:51:21When after one out pretty pot deck doubled McRae walked in on the ground ball by Brett to nettles.
- 3:51:29McRae hit willing Randolph and drove him almost in the left field.
- 3:51:34And a run scored as Randolph was on the ground with the ball on the ground next door.
- 3:51:40But then the Yankees bounced back with three big runs in the bottom of the sixth.
- 3:51:44A one out single by Munson a two out single by Penella a double by Johnson on intentional walk to Chambliss and a big error by George Brett.
- 3:51:54And now in this inning the Yankees have scored they lead six to two.
- 3:52:00Steve Mingori the left hander is on and he will pitch to Mickey Rivers.
- 3:52:08And if he serves Mickey one of those sidearm curves Mickey's going to slap it right down the left field line.
- 3:52:18So Mingori is loosening up the bases of fully Yankees.
- 3:52:26I'll tell you in the fifth sixth and here in the eighth inning the Yankees sending a lot of men up to the plate.
- 3:52:33They sent six men of the plate in the fifth when they scored two they sent eight men of the plate in the sixth when they scored three.
- 3:52:40And this is the seventh man to come to the plate here in the eighth inning.
- 3:52:46Mickey's over for tonight's bounce to short bounce to first hit and or force play and fly to center.
- 3:52:55And now about that Rod Carola the twins he hit 439 during the final month and was named the player of the month.
- 3:53:04The only man ever win that on a twice in one year.
- 3:53:10All right Rivers the battle with two out in the bases loaded Brett still playing in at third.
- 3:53:16Kirby tried to slap it to left field and missed it. Wotman holds time and goes out to talk to Mingori.
- 3:53:32On deck is Greg Nuttles still talking out on the mound.
- 3:53:46Now Watson turns around puts the mask back on and comes back Yankees leading 6-2 here in the bottom of the eighth.
- 3:54:00Mingori the glove on his knee comes down to the belt.
- 3:54:05Curve it's inside one on one.
- 3:54:08Mickey's trying to hit that ball to left field.
- 3:54:12Mingori doesn't want to get that curve in on Mickey but both of them have been inside.
- 3:54:17He gets a one away from the plate.
- 3:54:19Mickey will serve it out there like a tennis player on a backhand shot.
- 3:54:24Fastball outside to one. You've got to come over that plate if he walks Mickey another run will come across.
- 3:54:33Bases of fully Yankees.
- 3:54:35Chambliss at third.
- 3:54:36Randolph at second.
- 3:54:37Dent over at first.
- 3:54:40Stretch by Mingori.
- 3:54:42The curve is fouled just below as it's two and two.
- 3:54:53Mingori goes to the rising bag.
- 3:55:03Looks in for the sign.
- 3:55:06Now comes set and the pitch curves swung at and missed right three.
- 3:55:12So Mingori does his job but the Yankees pick up another run on a few bases.
- 3:55:20Three men left at the end of eight. The Yankees six in the Royals two.
- 3:55:25Flavor of Venetian cuisine.
- 3:55:27The zesty satisfying taste of La Cucina Siciliana.
- 3:55:30From Palermo to Milano you can cook your way through all the delectable regional dishes of Italy with food products from Palio.
- 3:55:37Smooth creamy Palio ricotta cheese.
- 3:55:39Luscious fast melting Palio mozzarella.

- 3:55:45Palio has a complete variety of real Italian food products.
- 3:55:48All made to help you make dishes that would charm a pomegranate or make a Roman feel at home in.
- 3:55:53Palio always in the best Italian taste.
- 3:55:56Music playing.
- 3:56:22Music playing.
- 3:56:37Music playing.
- 3:56:55Well on the scoreboard tonight's attendance fifty six thousand two hundred and thirty.
- 3:57:00The total is for the two games a hundred and eleven thousand one hundred and sixty.
- 3:57:04And it says the Yankees thank the greatest fans in the world.
- 3:57:08And they certainly are proving it tonight.
- 3:57:11They have all year. Paul Blair has moved into play right field for the Yankees.
- 3:57:17As we go into the top of the ninth it'll be McCray Brett and Collins.
- 3:57:23McCray has been a thorn in the side of the Yankees using a few of Eddie Stanky's old tricks.
- 3:57:29To knock the ball out of the glove of first bucky dent and then Willie Randolph.
- 3:57:36McCray has walked twice and struck out once.
- 3:57:39Gidry Wines.
- 3:57:41Swing in a miss at a curve strike one.
- 3:57:48That said the Yankees will not soon forget the two plays that McCray pulled down at second base.
- 3:57:55Rest assured.
- 3:57:58The next pitch by Gidry just a little low one on one.
- 3:58:03Top of the ninth the Yankees lead six to two.
- 3:58:09The one one pitch swing and a miss strike two.
- 3:58:14And Gidry has seven strikeouts he's allowed just two base hits and two runs.
- 3:58:20He has walked three.
- 3:58:25The one two pitch a little bit high two and two.
- 3:58:38Now the two two delivery.
- 3:58:40Oh man that was close I don't know where it was but it was called ball three.
- 3:58:46Months and months and nowhere it was.
- 3:58:52McCray got a break there.
- 3:58:57Three and two.
- 3:59:00And the pitch.
- 3:59:02Popped up but I believe it'll be out of play.
- 3:59:04Chambliss will not be able to reach it.
- 3:59:06Now it's back about six rows.
- 3:59:19Still three and two on McCray.
- 3:59:25Sparky Lyle is up in the Yankee bullpen just in case.
- 3:59:31The payoff pitch.
- 3:59:33Bouncing a shot.
- 3:59:35Dent in big hop throw to first they got him.
- 3:59:39All right McCray went after a bad ball that time it was out of the strike zone.
- 3:59:44Would have had a base on balls.
- 3:59:47George Brett looking for his first hit in the playoffs.
- 3:59:50He's fly to center bounce to second bounce to third.
- 4:00:01One out nobody on.
- 4:00:03Pitch to Brett strike one.
- 4:00:13And the batting out of the batting.
- 4:00:17He's got a lot of fans cheering below us.
- 4:00:21Line as the first hit for Brett a line drive in the left field.
- 4:00:26In his ninth at bat in the playoffs Brett gets his first hit.
- 4:00:33With one out here in the top of the ninth.
- 4:00:36And about an hour Al Collins Collins has struck out twice and fly to center.
- 4:00:42Al Collins who had a big game yesterday with three base hits one of the Mahoma has been shut out.
- 4:00:54Yankees lead six two here in the top of the ninth.
- 4:00:58And a curve is over strike one call.
- 4:01:15How is asking for time.
- 4:01:18And Munson saying that Collins is out of the batter's box.
- 4:01:21Russ gets measuring with the bat.
- 4:01:24Making the line now and Collins was standing out of the batter's box.
- 4:01:28Out of boy.
- 4:01:29Fairman got to play this game according to the rules you know.
- 4:01:36All happened a double day.
- 4:01:37No what he was doing when he made the rules.
- 4:01:45Munson moves up a bit on the plate now that Collins moved up.
- 4:01:50And he's got three sets and the pitch swing and a strike two.
- 4:01:56And now Russ gets will clean off home plate.
- 4:02:10Nothing into the count.
- 4:02:13Well Munson has given Collins a little bit to think about worry about his stance.
- 4:02:18The two strike pitch.
- 4:02:20Powell just got a piece of it barely fouled it off to stay alive.
- 4:02:33One man out in the top of the ninth Yankees leading six to Chambler's playing in back of the runner at first.
- 4:02:44Good to be comes to the belt the pitch fouled back and out of play.
- 4:02:53It's a good way to come up with a few broken fingers trying to catch a foul ball against the wall.
- 4:03:08All right Collins stepped out of the batter's box he's back in.
- 4:03:17Goodry gets a sign from Munson and the pitch he reached out a ball about a foot outside the strike zone and fouled it down the right field line.
- 4:03:28And again Russ gets once a new baseball.
- 4:03:45Nothing into the count.
- 4:03:50Goodry the pitch.
- 4:03:59Oh we just barely fouled it off the end of the bat to stay alive again.
- 4:04:01Goodry throwing some good pitches to Collins.
- 4:04:08Goodry has not wasted a pitch on Collins.
- 4:04:10Collins won't let him waste a pitch.
- 4:04:12Time is called as a hat is on the ground out in right field recovered by the right field umpire Jerry Newdecker.
- 4:04:19Picks it up flips it in the stands.
- 4:04:29All right we're ready to go again one out top of the ninth the angst in front six two red at first.
- 4:04:37And the pitch it high and deep to left field Penelope's got room though on the warning track makes the catch.
- 4:04:44So the world now a little frustrated this is what happened to the Yankees last night all their long drives and line drives were caught.
- 4:04:54And it's happening in Kansas City tonight.
- 4:04:57Another ball game.
- 4:05:00Different breaks.
- 4:05:02Two out here's Amos Otis.
- 4:05:05He's flying to right and fly to center twice.
- 4:05:09He's out in the top of the ninth.
- 4:05:21Red at first.
- 4:05:23Stretch by Goodry.
- 4:05:25And it's high and outside ball one.
- 4:05:36John Maybury.
- 4:05:41The one old pitch.
- 4:05:43Fly deep the center but rivers with plenty of room to cross on their feet.
- 4:05:48Mickey makes the catch in the ball game is over.
- 4:05:52Oh they are mobbing Goodry what a job by the young left hand and no runs they hit no errors a man left.
- 4:05:58The final score the Yankees six in the Royals two.
- 4:06:02Eat too much drink too much.
- 4:06:06Take brioche.

- 4:07:01That's the brioche consumer pledge.
- 4:07:06Well the totals in the ball game for the victorious Yankees six runs ten hits one error for the Royals two runs on just three hits in one error.
- 4:07:15The winning pitcher of course Ron Gidrie who went all the way and as we've said so many times he has been the stopper and the lifesaver for the Yankees all year.
- 4:07:24The losing pitcher Andy Hasler pitched another fine ball game but he was the victim of Mark Littell coming on and giving up the run and two more runs after that the error by George Brett.
- 4:07:36The big header for the Yankees in the ball game Cliff Johnson with a tremendous home run a deep center field and a double he drove in two runs and scored two.
- 4:07:46Will he Randolph had a couple of base hit scored a run and drove in a run.
- 4:07:50But he didn't drove in a run and two other runs scored on the error by Brett.
- 4:07:54We'll be back with more in the game right after this.

He went to court to force the city and federal government to build sewage treatment plants so that the dumping of 200 million gallons of raw sewage a day would be stopped.
- 4:12:31The destruction of our beaches must be prevented. We have a right as citizens to live free of this kind of pollution and we are going to see that it stopped.
- 4:12:41With our beaches threatened it was Alda Morrow who led the fight to expose the source of this pollution and take collective action.

- 4:13:06The Mel Allen Post Game Show is brought to you by the Cricket Shop and fashionable Cedarhurst Long Island, the leading men's and boys fashion center offering clothes for the way you live today.
- 4:13:19Okay, good evening everyone and once again let me say the Mel Allen Post Game Show stars John Sterling and features Mel Allen, special added attraction, a Marion Bone.
- 4:13:33And a big surprise guest Hal Brown at the end of the program is going to tap dance for you.
- 4:13:41There's so many things you can say. This was a terrific game, an interesting game obviously all from the Yankees standpoint.
- 4:13:47First of all the series is tied. The Yankees won 6-2. It's a 2 out of 3 series for the American League Championship.
- 4:13:53It's all played in Kansas City. The Royals have the edge but the Yankees certainly can win 2 out of 3 and the Yankees have 3 starting pitcher set.
- 4:14:03Torres, Figueroa and Tidro they're going to have to go at least 6 innings or so and then Sparky could relieve every day.
- 4:14:10I don't know where we begin. I guess we've got to begin with a guy who's been the stopper all year long for the Yankees, Ron Guidry.
- 4:14:17Not only does he throw the ball so hard but he has good control and tonight against a team that is a marvelous hitting ball club.
- 4:14:28That has power, lefty hitting, righty hitting and the guys who hit for great averages.
- 4:14:33A team that scored as many runs as the Yankees this year. He held them to 3 hits and 2 of those were by their 2 bunch of Judy hitters, Freddie Potec and Frank White.
- 4:14:43It's sort of the same story but in reverse. They stopped the Yankee power yesterday and tonight Guidry stopped their big man except for the one hit that Collins got in the 9th inning.
- 4:14:57Well, they did stop. Brett, right. They did stop him completely. It's interesting about how Kansas City obviously wants to play.
- 4:15:05We're going to recap the game very quickly. The Royals had a stolen base in the first inning when McCrae got on and actually he wasn't a stolen base.
- 4:15:15He munched and threw him out but he kicked the ball out of a dense hand.
- 4:15:20The Yankee and Ruzito remember that from World Series?
- 4:15:22I'll tell you what, Phillip Francis remembers that. Not too aptly either. But there was an example where they ran.
- 4:15:28The reason I bring this up is because you can analyze these things to death but it depends upon execution as to whether or not you have a chance to go into your strains or weaknesses.
- 4:15:39In the third inning when Kansas City broke the scoreless tie, by the way, Andy Hassel fished a hell of a game.
- 4:15:44He did.
- 4:15:45Exactly what they wanted him to do.
- 4:15:46Right.
- 4:15:47But in the third inning, Porter walked and the left-handers keep on walking Porter who has pretty good eye.
- 4:15:53And then Frank White got one of the three Kansas City hits. I handled it. So that wasn't exactly a very strong hit.
- 4:16:00Well, the loop runs the center.
- 4:16:02Porter, who isn't fast at all, went all the way to third. Challenged the X and there was no playmate on him.
- 4:16:08And then a line drive to Centipheal to Rivers in really relatively short Centipheal and Rivers threw very badly to the plate.
- 4:16:15And Porter again, without great speed, tagged up and scored.
- 4:16:19And later on the game...
- 4:16:21I'll turn up just one second as you're detailing this game.
- 4:16:25It's one of the things that you and I talked about yesterday as an overriding factor in this entire series.
- 4:16:32And that is you can run on the Yankee outfielders, but you can't run on the Kansas City outfielders.
- 4:16:38But really, I wanted to recap the game for people who tune in to the game.
- 4:16:43But I recap with a point.
- 4:16:46The point is, which I'll get now, I don't have to do it at the end dramatically,
- 4:16:49but the point is that the Royals really wanted to run.
- 4:16:52Every chance they had, they ran.
- 4:16:54But you know what, as we said yesterday, you can't run if you don't get on base.
- 4:16:58You can't steal first base.
- 4:17:00And Kansas City's running game was stopped because Goodrie didn't allow anyone to get on base.
- 4:17:04And so they can talk all the way.
- 4:17:06You want about the Yankees having poor throwing in the outfield, which they do.
- 4:17:10And Munson now and then having problems throwing runners out of second base.
- 4:17:15Sometimes he doesn't have problems, by the way.
- 4:17:17It doesn't matter if the pitching is good.
- 4:17:19And Goodrie's pitching was so strong, Kansas City not only couldn't run, they couldn't get on base.
- 4:17:23The Yankees made it 2-1 in the last of the fifth, and Hassler was pitching so well.
- 4:17:31Hassler comes over the top with the hard-breaking stuff, and his pitches really kind of act like a sinker.
- 4:17:39And he had Cliff Johnson foul popped out.
- 4:17:44Whereas the first big play of this American League Championship series, Darrell Porter came back,
- 4:17:48overran the ball, reached back, and went out of his glove, and Johnson had a life.
- 4:17:53And you almost felt that when Johnson had a life, something was going to happen.
- 4:17:56There was one out, no one on the fifth.
- 4:17:58If he got Johnson out, he had the left-handed chambliss.
- 4:18:00It looked like the Yankees were going to be out in the fifth inning without a run-down.
- 4:18:03One nothing at the end of five.
- 4:18:05But Porter dropped the ball.
- 4:18:07That could have been the turning point of the game.
- 4:18:09There were so many things that happened tonight that could have been turning points.
- 4:18:13And certainly that was one in a whimsical sort of way.
- 4:18:20I think of, I think back to Johnson getting something in his eye.
- 4:18:24And it could have been a home run.
- 4:18:26He's trying to wipe away or wipe it in.
- 4:18:29But have you ever seen things happen like that?
- 4:18:31You knew, you almost felt in your bones as soon as Porter let that ball sail away from him.
- 4:18:38When you give a batter a new life, he generally comes through by getting a base hit.
- 4:18:44Reminds me of the time when Barrow dropped the third out on Ted Williams in the ninth inning.
- 4:18:50Of course they were ahead, I think it was eight to nothing.
- 4:18:53But a no-hitter was in the balance there.
- 4:18:55But he got him out on the foul on the very next pitch from having Reynolds.
- 4:19:00But go ahead, I've interrupted your review.
- 4:19:04The point that you knew, you felt something happen, Mell and I watched the game in two different places.
- 4:19:09I just wanted to feel the same feeling.
- 4:19:11And Cliff Johnson really hit home run.
- 4:19:13He hit a line drive to center field that wasn't close.
- 4:19:16It banged off the black pitting area.
- 4:19:20The old wall behind the new fence.
- 4:19:24The interesting thing to me was that you could see him hoping and hoping and hoping.
- 4:19:30I think of the scores, one nothing Kansas City at this point.
- 4:19:34As he got to first base, went on an after-you-rounded first base, his fist finding went up into the area.
- 4:19:39So that ball bang up against it.
- 4:19:41What a homer.
- 4:19:42Now here's a let's stop for a minute now, or assessment.
- 4:19:44First of all, let me break the station.
- 4:19:46It's 1132 at WMCA Strauss Communications in New York.
- 4:19:50Real people radio and Mell and I be with you till midnight with the post-game rehash.
- 4:19:57We have things to talk about tonight, not just because the Yankees won, but there was some flavor in the game.
- 4:20:02And maybe a little bad blood being incurred between the two teams.
- 4:20:07Johnson at the home run, it was tied at one.
- 4:20:09I must stop for a minute now.
- 4:20:11You have known so many players in your life.
- 4:20:13You have seen this so far off in the night.
- 4:20:16Go back a year.
- 4:20:18The Houston Astros, I knew Tal Smith very well here in New York.
- 4:20:22So I've kind of followed his progress in Houston.
- 4:20:25The Houston Astros determined that Cliff Johnson was going to catch for.
- 4:20:30They had Bob Watson at first base.
- 4:20:32There's no D.H. in the National League.
- 4:20:35And Johnson the year before had come up after a great year with Denver in the Pacific Coast League.
- 4:20:42He had great power.
- 4:20:44And they ran crazy on Johnson.
- 4:20:46And the word went out and the word is fatal in baseball.
- 4:20:49Boy, you get labeled there.
- 4:20:50It's like being labeled a criminal in society.
- 4:20:52They ran Johnson crazy.
- 4:20:56Now who knows, maybe the pitches.
- 4:20:58We don't see the Houston games often enough.
- 4:21:01Johnson got off to a slow start.
- 4:21:03And by mid-season or so, Houston got off to a bad start.
- 4:21:06They put Johnson on the bench and kept him there.
- 4:21:09And here's a guy who's not young, came up late, languishing on the bench and had a reputation that there's only one place you could play in first base.
- 4:21:18And of course Bob Watson's playing first base for Houston.
- 4:21:21So this year, in mid-season, not being used, or in June, the Yankees make a deal to bring in Johnson.
- 4:21:27And now he's starring.
- 4:21:3056,000 people giving him a standing O.
- 4:21:33He is a pre-agent.
- 4:21:36There's got to be a lot of teams that will be interested in this guy who if he played every day for it, probably hit 30-35 home runs.
- 4:21:42He has caught very well for the Yankees.
- 4:21:44And he's got to be the happiest guy.
- 4:21:46His life absolutely changed.
- 4:21:48He did a 180 in the span of being dealt.
- 4:21:50Now, is that, and that happened so often?
- 4:21:52I have to just add one other little touch because you never know about being nice to people, let us say.
- 4:22:01Gabe Paul, who's general manager, had Houston briefly.
- 4:22:05Right.
- 4:22:06When you mentioned Tal Smith, I think he followed Gabe, didn't he?
- 4:22:10Right.
- 4:22:11So there was a connection that eventually led to Johnson coming to New York.
- 4:22:16Very much, well, of course, when Gabe got here to New York, he needed an assistant.
- 4:22:21And he brought in Tal Smith from Houston.
- 4:22:23Tal Smith a couple of years here before graduating general manager.
- 4:22:26And that's how deals are made.
- 4:22:28And I'll be damned if Johnson hasn't just turned his life around.
- 4:22:31He had a great season as a D.H. and playing giving Chambliss an occasional rest during the year and months and back to play.
- 4:22:42And I do, but since we won't, I was going to fill in for Barry Gray tonight.
- 4:22:48We won't have time.
- 4:22:50And if I was going to do Barry, sure, we would have taken calls.
- 4:22:53But because people are always willing to or trying to knock, it'd be very easy if the Aggies lost for my first call as they always do.
- 4:23:02They always find the guy on the bench who hasn't played.
- 4:23:04Why didn't you play so-and-so?
- 4:23:05I could be a guy who's averaged 120 for his 20-year career.
- 4:23:11Why did they play so-and-so?
- 4:23:13Well, Billy Martin took out Roy White pretty popularly Yankee to put Penella and Lef to D.H. Johnson against the Lefty.
- 4:23:20And Penella had a base hit yesterday and was robbed of a home run or at least an extra base hit.
- 4:23:25Johnson had a base hit yesterday and today Johnson had two big hits, including the home run.
- 4:23:32And Johnson and Penella had back-to-back hits off Lattell to break open the game.
- 4:23:38So I think that point should be made about Billy Martin because he'd hear about it if the reverse.
- 4:23:43I wonder if Cliff Johnson won't play in Kansas City.
- 4:23:46Anyway, after Johnson's home run, the next break in the game came when Randolph got a base hit and Hassler balked him to second.
- 4:23:52And that was a big balk because Dent then hit a kind of a fly ball single that Joe Zeb got a bad break on.
- 4:24:00And the Yankees led 2-1.
- 4:24:02And then Kansas City tied it up in the 6-mell, again, just scratching a run against Guidry with one out,
- 4:24:09Pontek doubled to right center field.
- 4:24:11It was a good hit. It was a line drive. It was that first decent hit of the game.
- 4:24:15Hal McCrae walked and then Brett hit a double play ball to Nettles.
- 4:24:19And I got to ask your opinion, does Nettles juggle the ball in this ball?
- 4:24:22Right, right.
- 4:24:23He didn't get it out right away.
- 4:24:24That led to what you were going to talk about in your opinion.
- 4:24:27Now, he throws the second base now for those who didn't tune in. McCrae did what runners do normally,
- 4:24:34and that's go into the second base from heavily, but McCrae threw a great block, knocked Randolph down.
- 4:24:39And as Randolph's on the ground, Pontek is so quick, ran around third and scored and tied the game at 2.
- 4:24:44Now, what were your thoughts on that?
- 4:24:46On the play, it may have seemed that McCrae went out of his way.
- 4:24:57A lot of people, obviously, Billy Martin came out to argue,
- 4:25:01but often a manager will come out to argue just for the sake of keeping this club hyped up.
- 4:25:05But he actually hit him right near the back, but he threw such a beautiful football block,
- 4:25:12he took him a few feet off. In fact, he went to the player at A&M.
- 4:25:17I'm just curious. I know he went to the player at A&M.
- 4:25:20I'm wondering if he didn't play some football down there. He had to, but he didn't hit him out of the baseline, so to speak.
- 4:25:28He didn't go for Randolph.
- 4:25:32Randolph actually was right at the back, having taken a somewhat belated throw because Nettles had just juggled the ball just long enough.
- 4:25:43And though he got the force out just as he was ready to pivot, he went into him with the obvious idea of taking him so completely out of the play to prevent the double play.
- 4:25:53But having thrown such a beautiful block and knocked him down at the ground,
- 4:25:57Patek, who's a great runner, and Barry Lert along with the third base coach, just kept on going because Randolph just couldn't get up.
- 4:26:07He couldn't have thrown the ball at a great beat.
- 4:26:09I agree with you because he hit him right at the back. He didn't go out of his way.
- 4:26:12Now sometimes when you see a guy go way out of his way, way out to the right side,
- 4:26:16at the Yankees, long before Charlie Finley ever thought of it, because Casey Stingel has a great team in the 50s.
- 4:26:22They used to have a designated runner who did play football in Nebraska, and Bob Servi is also a good hitter.
- 4:26:28But very often Bob Servi would be sent into the first base just to break up a double play, right?
- 4:26:33They would use Bob for two things. One to intimidate an infielder to break up a double play.
- 4:26:40And the other, in the case of another player trying to break up a double play, and going out of his way to start a fight.
- 4:26:48And I remember one situation out in St. Louis happened to be Clint Courtney, who really has got a great sense of humor.
- 4:26:55I think he's passed away last year, so. But Clint had been traded away, and he actually said when he came up to the plate,
- 4:27:04I'm going to get me somebody because McDougal, on the top of the 10th inning, coming home, didn't slide,
- 4:27:09but threw a block into Courtney and made him drop the ball and gave the Yankees the leading run.
- 4:27:14Courtney leads off last 10th inning, hits the right field screen, Bauer plays the rebound perfectly.
- 4:27:22Courtney had no chance, even a little block had no chance of making a double out of it.
- 4:27:27But Courtney just kept on going because he said, I'm going to get me somebody.
- 4:27:30And he went for Rizzuto, who was taking the relay out on the grass beyond second base, and he spiked Bill up above me.
- 4:27:38And could have spiked him up around the face or something like that. But anyway, two Yankees finally got a hold of him,
- 4:27:45pulled his arms back and big Bob served, just hauled off and smacked him right in the middle of the face.
- 4:27:51I have to laugh at it now because it didn't do any damage of a serious nature to Courtney, but that's another reason they use Bob serve.
- 4:28:00Yeah, yeah, I will remember.
- 4:28:01Well, we have you two in the six and before we get to the last of the six, as they say in a radio, here is, we'll leave you two to...
- 4:28:11You only talk about the cricket shops, I want Mel to throw in some good words for the cricket shops.
- 4:28:16Fine. As a matter of fact, I've been telling a lot of the folks about the cricket shop, Long Island's five towns most complete men's and boys' shop,
- 4:28:25and you'll find it at 112 Spruce Street in Cedarhurst, and I've been talking about it, I guess, for over a year.
- 4:28:31The president of the cricket shop is a loyal Yankee fan named Dick Conn, and he told us the other day he had the greatest year ever last year,
- 4:28:39and is beating all figures so far this year. As he says, it's like old times, baseball, the Yankees, in the playoffs and the cricket shop.
- 4:28:48Seriously, the cricket shop offers you a buying experience like no other men's and boys' shop, three levels of all the most creative fashions for men and boys at affordable prices.
- 4:28:59They have an exceptional shoe salon and tuxedo sales and rental department, too, and the cricket shop has just introduced Trezame.
- 4:29:08Trezame. Trezame. Pistrami, Trezame. I got it right that time.
- 4:29:15Trezame, a fabulous ladies boutique for the unusual and ultimate in fabric and design for the chic woman.
- 4:29:21And right now, the cricket shop also has a playoff special on bested corduroy suits, originally $110, now priced at just $84.90.
- 4:29:31So how about going on down to the cricket shop at 112 Spruce Street in Cedarhurst, take the whole family, and tell them that John Sterling and Mel Allen sent you, will you?
- 4:29:41We'll appreciate that.
- 4:29:42Yeah, now, as far as managerial strategy is concerned, and I tell my audience all the time, it's something I loved, Mel, all the years you did the Yankees.
- 4:29:50You always were managing. I mean, you were second guessing people, but I mean, you were giving your thoughts well.
- 4:29:56Now, as they said in the pinch, here, really, but here, I thought Hasler was tiring, or I thought he just was running out of steam because he was getting the ball up.
- 4:30:05And he doesn't have that kind of stuff.
- 4:30:07He doesn't have stuff like Gidry, he can get the ball up. And what I'm going to say eventually is I really agreed with Whitey Herzog, and Herzog is going to be knocked badly in the newspapers tomorrow.
- 4:30:17And I'd love to disagree with those writers. He might have chosen the wrong relief pitcher since he's got quite a few.
- 4:30:24But anyway, in the last of the six inning, it's tied at two. Muntzen's on first base, I think he got a base hit.
- 4:30:31And with one out, Nettles struck out on a high pitch, and Muntzen got a base hit. Jackson was up and Hasler got Jackson out.
- 4:30:40So I think he achieved the purpose. And I said to myself, well, I'll be surprised if Herzog, now that the lefties are through, they had two big writers coming up and Aaron and Johnson,
- 4:30:49I would have go for a right-hander in the bullpen. And Mel, that's what he did. And you know that Herzog is going to be knocked heavily.
- 4:30:57He took out Hasler and he brought in Mark Lutel.
- 4:31:02Well, you know, just before you go further at that point, you go back just an inning, two-thirds before that, in the fourth inning, and this is what a manager often will look at.
- 4:31:11Nettles, while he went out, hit the ball very close to the center field, right center field fence, and Otis caught it.
- 4:31:20And after Muntzen looked at the third strike, then Jackson belted one at almost, came very close to going out. So you could see that where over the first three innings,
- 4:31:33Hasler was making him hit on the ground quite a lot. All of a sudden, they were hitting that ball deeper and deeper and deeper.
- 4:31:42And then in the fifth inning, is when Johnson hit that home run, then came a couple of base hits, the ball came in the base hit. And so then in the sixth inning, again, there was a base hit.
- 4:31:53So he saw that the ball was rising, he was tiring, as you say, and I think it was a good move on this point.
- 4:31:58Yeah, I really do. Now, I'm sure that in Kansas City, they're going to say, ah, Doug Burd's been his top man, he should have brought in Bird then instead of Lutel, or he should have written him in Gloria.
- 4:32:08But he brought in Lutel, and Lutel didn't have it, and here are the two guys that Martin put in his lineup, and Ella hit a line drive single.
- 4:32:18And that Muntzen went around the third on the base, even though it was ahead of him to left field.
- 4:32:27And then Johnson hit a line drive, doubled on the left field line, and Johnson get a run from there then, and one going away.
- 4:32:36And the Yankees led three to two, and second and third and two out, Chambliss, they gave Chambliss an intentional pass.
- 4:32:42The left hand hit it, it bring up Randolph, and again, I thought that was a good move by Herzog.
- 4:32:46But the next batter up, Randolph.
- 4:32:48That's always Chambliss who hit the home run off with Lutel at one last year's game.
- 4:32:52The second and third, though, he set up a fours on a base, and you set up a right hand hit it like Randolph, and Willie's a good hit.
- 4:32:58He's not as good a hitter as Chambliss, and Randolph had a hard ground ball, which went through Brett's legs, and that was the game.
- 4:33:03It made it five-two, and that was the game, and I'm sure that move is going to be heavily criticized, and I thought it was a good move.
- 4:33:09I don't see how anybody knows a little bit about baseball. I don't claim to know all about it, so I don't want anybody to misunderstand me.
- 4:33:16But I think that was a perfect move on the part of any manager in that spot to put Chambliss on.
- 4:33:22And bring him Lutel, too.
- 4:33:24And bring him Lutel.
- 4:33:25So that's the question, that's what's going to be a question.
- 4:33:27And you know what? Since Hasler will never, in the history of this world, throw a pitch in this game from two outs in the sixth inning on, no one will ever know.
- 4:33:39So it's a very easy thing to say, well, Hasler has some problems, and he was getting them out. There was two outs in the fan-on.
- 4:33:46Anyway, it really didn't matter, because Giddy was that good.
- 4:33:49After the base hit by Patek in the sixth inning, he gave a base hit to White in the third, a base hit to Patek in the sixth, he didn't give up a hit in the seventh and eighth, and the ninth inning, a harmless single to Brett.
- 4:34:02And that was at the Yankees' go-to-another run in the eighth inning, which Reggie Jackson set up on a single and a steal, and moving over to third to red, I've got a base hit.
- 4:34:12And it was six to two, and Mel, the Yankees have done what they absolutely had to do. I mean, no question. They absolutely had to win the game.
- 4:34:23No question about that.
- 4:34:25And now they've won it, and now it's a three-game series in Kansas City, and the National League is a three-game series in Philadelphia.
- 4:34:33We'll try to look ahead and talk, well, we have about 14 more minutes, so we'll have a chance to look ahead and talk about Kansas City, and then the three games that will be played, or the two out of three games that will be played in Kansas City in just a moment.
- 4:34:49Right now, this word for the cricket shot from Mel.
- 4:34:54Before I do that, John and I underscore something that you've been talking about up to now. The Royals, as you pointed out, were trying to run on the Yankees.
- 4:35:06No matter what position, they were trying to steal on Munson. And they were trying, in other words, to intimidate him again tonight early, and in that third inning, there was an important play.
- 4:35:18When Mac Gray was the hitter, and you had men on base, and Munson called for a pitch out of Mac Gray and caught a runner stealing.
- 4:35:28Remember that? That was a key play early.
- 4:35:30Yes, it was, and that was after they scored the run.
- 4:35:33And he called for the pitch out of the right shot. By the way, that man, Al, played with Munson.
- 4:35:38He was going to do the ball on the ground.
- 4:35:40Right, and then got the short off and put the tag on.
- 4:35:42And you folks, you make quite a play too, and a good play by going out to do something I'm going to ask you to.
- 4:35:51You know, some of the greatest Yankee fans are kids. They know every player, every number of each uniform, and you usually know the batting order, starting pitchers of the teams that they root for.
- 4:36:02Well, the cricket shop in fashionable C. DeHurst specializes in youngsters.
- 4:36:09They dedicate themselves to making all of you young men out there look right and feel good about it.
- 4:36:15The Cricket Boy Shop offers one of the largest selections of suits, sports jackets, outerwear, shirts, and jeans. Everything you can think of.
- 4:36:26I think the largest selection all of New York. They have top brands.
- 4:36:32I'm coming from such young men's designers as Pierre Cardin, Yves Saint Laurent, John Weitz, Mighty Mac, Robert Bruce, and many others.
- 4:36:40And right now, the president of the cricket shop, Dick Kahn, is offering a sensational Yankee playoff special for boys.
- 4:36:48All dungarees are discounted an incredible 50%.
- 4:36:52So I'd suggest you go on down to the cricket boy shop located at 112 Spruce Street in C. DeHurst, Long Island. All durations are free, and Huskies and Slims are available too.
- 4:37:04By the way, they're open Wednesdays and Fridays till 9.30 p.m.
- 4:37:08And when you do go, be sure to tell them that John Sterling and Mel Allen sent you. Thank you.
- 4:37:13Johnny?
- 4:37:14All right, Mel. We have about 11 minutes left or so. The Yankees in this must game.
- 4:37:22And I'll tell you what, I was getting a little apprehensive when it was 1-0 in the fifth and Hassler was getting him out.
- 4:37:29When Johnson popped up a look of those two outs, and you start, whenever a team is leading, or whenever the other team isn't hitting, you start thinking one team is, can't be beaten.
- 4:37:43He'd retired 11 in a row over a stretch in there.
- 4:37:46And as you said, there was ground ball, ground ball, ground ball, and the left hand hitters weren't threatening them at all.
- 4:37:52And then that all changed, and now the Yankees look like they're the superior team. If you don't hit, you can't win.
- 4:37:59Pitching is the name of the game.
- 4:38:01Really is.
- 4:38:02Really is.
- 4:38:03Now, the Yankees go into Kansas City with Torres and Figueroa and probably Tidro on Sunday.
- 4:38:11I say probably they may need Tidro to just step in early.
- 4:38:16If they lose tomorrow, they'll need them all in the next day.
- 4:38:20That's right. Unless they're saving him for the junior prom, they lose Friday.
- 4:38:24You find it interesting to see Hunter loosening up tonight?
- 4:38:27Yeah, I think he was throwing for that purpose to find out, can he pitch it all? Can he give them two winnings?
- 4:38:32Because they're going to need a guy, if they run into trouble early, to pitch the third or fourth or the fifth before a while, can come in the sixth or seventh.
- 4:38:39I wonder, I really wonder about Gidry. You know, it's a very, as you know, very cool night.
- 4:38:46I don't know what the temperature is, but I bet the temperature isn't above 50 degrees.
- 4:38:50And I wonder how much it took out of Gidry. I mean, the arm can only take so much.
- 4:38:56I wonder if he could come back and pitch Sunday.
- 4:38:59Well, if the adrenaline flows, as it generally does in this sort of thing, it might help him somewhat.
- 4:39:06But, as you know, John, his case history, so to speak, has been that of going along brilliantly, per say, six innings, and then starting to fade a bit.
- 4:39:18But with the cool of weather, and the fact that I don't know how many pitches he had to throw, but he was giving it everything he had.
- 4:39:30After all, it's only 26 years of age, and I think that now what's going to really happen, he'll just tell whoever goes out there, just give me everything you've got for as long as you can, and I'll bring somebody in.
- 4:39:42Right. So Billy has to have Tidio with the ready, if Torres or Figueroa, and or Figueroa, run into trouble early.
- 4:39:53And whereas Whitey Herzog has his pitching set, a splitter-off will pitch if there's a fifth game with three days rest, obviously.
- 4:40:01Leonard and Colburn go on the next two days. And, you know, everyone going into a game, every announcer, for some reason, wants to go back to records, history, tradition, etc.
- 4:40:12to give them a background. And you know what? The game tomorrow in both Philadelphia and Kansas City doesn't depend on, won't be influenced by anything that's ever happened before.
- 4:40:22Because if you look at it on the surface, Philadelphia and Kansas City should win because they happen to play great in their home park.
- 4:40:29And I'm sure everyone's saying, hey, you know, why can't they win two out of three? You mean that you don't think they're going to win two out of three, but I don't know why anyone would think that would happen.
- 4:40:37No one knows what's going to happen in the next three games, and the Yankees may be one pitch or short because they don't have that one or two extra guys in the bullpen.
- 4:40:46Well, here's the case in point tonight. Hasler, as we had talked before the ballgame did on the way, does have a background of lack of control.
- 4:41:02But yet tonight he had control. And so how do you know what's going to happen? No one knows. If we didn't know, you and I would be millionaires by tomorrow night, wouldn't we? We could have to send again.
- 4:41:12I tell you, I told it to a caller a few days ago when he was asking me about the outcome and for predictions, I said, if I knew, boy, I'd hawk everything I've got, you know, and then retire.
- 4:41:23All right. How about Penella and Johnson? Here's another thorny problem that Martin has to rest with. And I'm going to take you back. I am going to take you back very quickly here.
- 4:41:32Okay.
- 4:41:33I know you'll remember this. Casey Stengel was, he wasn't the first of anything. Everything has been done all throughout life. But Stengel, seeing how McGraw managed when he was a giant many years ago, certainly developed to a fine art,
- 4:41:47he was a big player in the tuning because he had so many good ball players. He had what was called the Yankee Irregular surrounding Maddo and Barrett. And in the 56 series, when the Dodgers would pitch a left hander, he'd play Howard and Lovefield and Scarring at first.
- 4:42:07And in the last game, when he got to the seventh game, the game that cooks pitched, Stengel, you know, visited by someone from another planet in the morning, decided to go with his two right hand hitters in Ebbetsfield against the right hand pitcher.
- 4:42:21I think the reason for that was, well, I'm sure that what the reason was, it's easier to hit one out of, it was easier to hit one out of Ebbetsfield into the left field seats than it was over that high wall in right field.
- 4:42:36And that was, he played percentages right to the hilt. In fact, he would send up Enos Slaughter to bat against a bench hit against a left hand pitcher and everybody said, why did you do that?
- 4:42:46Well, he played with that fellow out there in St. Louis long enough to know the left hander could hit a left hander. Interpreting Stengel, that fellow out in St. Louis was a museum.
- 4:42:54Right, they saw all his left handers.
- 4:42:56Everybody was running right to the notes and he'd say, gee, they didn't wait long enough for me to finish. He said, there is one type of left hander I won't throw him up there against. And that's the guy that throws a real good sidearm left hander. I won't pinch it against him.
- 4:43:10So he had everything down to a very fine arm.
- 4:43:13For those who don't, and sometimes you have to go back because everyone doesn't go back like we do in the recall of these great Yankee World Series games. In that seventh game, although they didn't need it, it was the game and very at the 2-2 run homers in the first and third.
- 4:43:29And Don Nucum slugged the parking attendant as he was leaving.
- 4:43:33He had one off his right here and another one low outside. I don't blame you for being angry.
- 4:43:38But Howard hit a home run to right field of all places, which he did. Now Howard and Scarrant had to learn to hit to right field because of Yankee Stadium.
- 4:43:47They had good power to right center.
- 4:43:49Right, later in the game Scarrant hit a Grand Slam home run. So there was Casey. Anyway, the reason I bring that up is Martin has to decide, do I put in Roy White in left field, which then makes him D.H. either Penella or Cliff Johnson?
- 4:44:04Or do I leave it with Penella and Cliff Johnson who are really hot bats?
- 4:44:10I'll tell you, this is going to displease a good friend of mine, Roy White, and a good friend of yours. But I would like to bet that I wouldn't like to bet at all. I don't know what that means.
- 4:44:22But in short series, you go with hot hitters, don't you? And I would kind of expect Penella and Johnson to both play.
- 4:44:29I would too. The only thing that might enter my mind at this point is to try and start out with as good a defense as you can at the outset.
- 4:44:39And if you maybe get ahead a little bit, or if you don't get ahead, or you're staying even, you've got something to throw in there in the sense of power.
- 4:44:48It's one of those things that, you know, we could sit here and talk about that all night.
- 4:44:52I know that Joe McCarthy, when I first started out, said, forget murderers, or what we went on as defense. Stangle the same way. Any good manager on 10, that's what you went on.
- 4:45:02Before Mel talks about the cricket shop, I do want to say one thing. It's fun when you see a team play, you know, in Kansas City, we don't see the Royals play all that much, and I haven't seen them play since August.
- 4:45:13And I'll tell you, who's impressed me in the two games. Now we're going to see him for at least two more, maybe three more games. And that's Frank White.
- 4:45:19He is a marvelous fielding second baseman. And they've improved a lot since White became their second baseman.
- 4:45:27Well, we have a couple minutes to go, and before we continue, here's Mel for the cricket shop.
- 4:45:31The cricket shop. Long Island's great place to go shopping. A few men and boys.
- 4:45:37The most complete men's and boys' shop at 112 Spruce Street in Cedarhurst.
- 4:45:42I've been talking about it for a long while. The president is Dick Conn, he's a great Yankee fan, and he's celebrating these fabulous playoff specials.
- 4:45:51Pierre Cardin wool blend baseball jackets, regularly $80, now just $40. Pierre Cardin wool blend toggle coats with hoods, regularly $110.
- 4:46:06They are playoff priced at only $55, and bested corduroy suits, regularly $110, and now just $84.90.
- 4:46:16It's just like old times, baseball, the Yankees, and the cricket shop. And as Dick Conn says, all number one.
- 4:46:24The cricket shop offers a buying experience like no other men's and boys' shop.
- 4:46:29You'll find three levels of all the most creative fashions, including an exceptional shoe salon and Tuxedo Reynolds and Sales Department.
- 4:46:39So how about going on down to the cricket shop at 112 Spruce Street in fashionable Cedarhurst.
- 4:46:45Take the entire family and tell them that John Sterling and Mel Allen sent you.
- 4:46:50We'll certainly appreciate it, and I know Dick Conn will.
- 4:46:53John? Okay, tomorrow afternoon the Phillies and Dodgers, Bird Hooten will pitch for the Dodgers, and the young right-handed Larry Christensen will 19 games this year.
- 4:47:04He really throws hard. We'll pitch for the Fills, and tomorrow night the Yankees will go with Mike Torres, and Kansas City will pitch their number one pitcher, right-hander Dennis Lundett.
- 4:47:14We're going to do something a little different after the 7 o'clock news tomorrow night.
- 4:47:17We'll begin our pre-game show. I'll be in New York and Mel will be in Miami, where he's going to do hurricane football on Saturday.
- 4:47:24Who are you playing Saturday? Kansas.
- 4:47:26Ah-ha. I have a big eight.
- 4:47:28All right. And so we will see you after the 7 o'clock news, approximately about 7.15, I would guess, and if the phone lines are working and there's no hurricane.
- 4:47:40You're going to be in way two.
- 4:47:41Yeah, we'll be all over this, but we'll be in Baltimore on Saturday.
- 4:47:44So Mel, I can congratulate you on a big Wednesday night, and we'll talk to you from Miami. Have a good trip tomorrow, and we'll talk to you tomorrow evening.
- 4:47:54Thank you very much, John. It's always a pleasure working with you. I hope you folks will drop us a note and let us know a little bit about what you might like us to talk about.
- 4:48:03Right.
- 4:48:04If you don't like what we have been talking about, let us hope that this series continues through the back of your head.
- 4:48:09See you tomorrow right after the 7 o'clock news, as John Sterling. Have a good night.
