- 2:07Speaker 2: Now let's get to football. If you're a big Bengals fan,
- 2:11Speaker 2: you're probably familiar with Joe Goodberry. He's been cranking out
- 2:14Speaker 2: great Bengals content for more than a decade, and his
- 2:18Speaker 2: film breakdowns and player evaluations are exceptional. Joe is currently
- 2:23Speaker 2: part of the first Star Logistics media group and you
- 2:26Speaker 2: can find his Bengals on the Brain videos on YouTube.
- 2:30Speaker 2: He's also a great Twitter follow at Joe Goodbarry. We
- 2:35Speaker 2: spoke this week about what Joe calls the most important
- 2:39Speaker 2: off season in Bengals history. Joe, you've done some recent
- 2:44Speaker 2: videos on your YouTube channel where you did a free
- 2:46Speaker 2: agency simulation and a draft simulation. Your highest priced free
- 2:52Speaker 2: agent acquisition was an interior defensive lineman, Justin Mattabik of
- 2:56Speaker 2: the Ravens. Your top two draft picks were interior defensive
- 3:01Speaker 2: lineman Johnny Newton of Illinois in the first round and
- 3:05Speaker 2: mammoth to Andre Sweat of Texas in the second round.
- 3:08Speaker 2: So this would suggest did you consider upgrading the interior
- 3:13Speaker 2: defensive line to be a huge priority for the Bengals
- 3:16Speaker 2: this offseason. I do.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I think that's the most we can take from that
- 3:19Speaker 1: exercises that I really felt they wanted to or we
- 3:22Speaker 1: should add a defensive tackle or two or three to
- 3:25Speaker 1: that room. Yeah, I didn't plan on going so heavy
- 3:28Speaker 1: at defensive tackle. When I saw Justin Mattabakay was out
- 3:31Speaker 1: there that the Ravens did not tag him, and I
- 3:34Speaker 1: let it go a couple of days because I didn't
- 3:35Speaker 1: think the Bengals would. I tried to operate as the
- 3:37Speaker 1: Bengals there, but I didn't think they would throw huge
- 3:40Speaker 1: money at him, and when he was still there after
- 3:41Speaker 1: a week, similar to the Orlando Brown junior situation last year,
- 3:45Speaker 1: I said, Okay, let's run the simulation, let's throw some
- 3:47Speaker 1: money at him, and we got him and I today
- 3:49Speaker 1: I ran on ESPN two also that justin Matta Bikay,
- 3:52Speaker 1: they listed the best fit would be the Bengals, and
- 3:55Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, sign me up for that. That's
- 3:57Speaker 1: a guy that we loved pre draft as well in
- 3:59Speaker 1: our process and thought he'd be a future all Pro player,
- 4:02Speaker 1: and here he is on the cusp of stardom. I
- 4:04Speaker 1: think he's well worth that money. And then you get
- 4:06Speaker 1: to the draft. And that's the thing, like everyone wants
- 4:08Speaker 1: to either do the free agent simulators or they do
- 4:11Speaker 1: the draft simulators, and they don't put the two together.
- 4:13Speaker 1: So that was my idea. There's, hey, you've got to
- 4:15Speaker 1: do both. Here. One comes before the other for a
- 4:19Speaker 1: reason because it affects how you draft. And then I
- 4:21Speaker 1: get there, and I believe Johnny Newton is worth a
- 4:24Speaker 1: top ten pick in every draft. I think everything from
- 4:27Speaker 1: the film to the data to the projection of the
- 4:30Speaker 1: everything I look at for draft analysis has this guy
- 4:33Speaker 1: is an future All Pro type of player, And so
- 4:36Speaker 1: how do I deny that? How do I turn down
- 4:38Speaker 1: a guy like that? That was clearly the last one
- 4:41Speaker 1: I felt was the blue chip player remaining on the board.
- 4:43Speaker 1: And hey, so we go back to back defensive tackle
- 4:45Speaker 1: with our highest offseason resource and then come back in
- 4:49Speaker 1: round two and Tomordray Sweat is just a different guy
- 4:51Speaker 1: than those two. He has a nose tackle and a
- 4:53Speaker 1: big body and they need that. So yeah, that's how
- 4:56Speaker 1: it played out. And you know, I'm not ashamed to
- 4:57Speaker 1: say that they need defensive tackle and I feel that
- 5:00Speaker 1: and fixed it.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Well, let's talk about the free agency market at that position,
- 5:04Speaker 2: because there are some very familiar names. Obviously, Chris Jones
- 5:08Speaker 2: gets thrown out there. I don't see it. He's going
- 5:10Speaker 2: to be the highest paid defensive tackle in the league
- 5:13Speaker 2: probably when this is all said and done. But then
- 5:16Speaker 2: you see guys like Mattabique, Leonard Williams, Christian Wilkins, Sheldon Rankins,
- 5:21Speaker 2: there are others. Now by the time free agency rolls around,
- 5:25Speaker 2: maybe some of those guys aren't there anymore. But do
- 5:29Speaker 2: you favor spending a big chunk of your free agency
- 5:33Speaker 2: budget on a guy like that or would you prefer
- 5:37Speaker 2: multiple tier two tier three type guys.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I usually lean towards the multiple tier two, three and
- 5:43Speaker 1: even fours. In past years, it's worked for the Bengals.
- 5:46Speaker 1: They identified the correct players in the majority of time.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I mean, there has been a Trey Wayne sprinkling in there.
- 5:51Speaker 1: But when you get at Chobo Luzia and a Mike
- 5:53Speaker 1: Hilton and a von Bell, I mean, it outweighs the
- 5:55Speaker 1: one miss you'll have swimming in the tier three range.
- 6:00Speaker 1: It's best to do that because if you go for
- 6:02Speaker 1: a big free agent and let's say he gets hurt.
- 6:04Speaker 1: You know, nobody wants that, but it happens, and you
- 6:08Speaker 1: have fifteen million dollars in cap space tied into that
- 6:11Speaker 1: player when you could have potentially three guys making that
- 6:13Speaker 1: money and being part of a rotation, and especially defensive tackle,
- 6:17Speaker 1: seems like it's a rotation heavy position throughout the league,
- 6:21Speaker 1: especially across the defensive line. I think defensive end is
- 6:23Speaker 1: one of the deepest groups in the league in terms
- 6:25Speaker 1: of talent, and you just see the best teams have
- 6:27Speaker 1: these full rotations across the front. Bengals really couldn't do
- 6:31Speaker 1: that last year. And here's the problem, though, is they
- 6:34Speaker 1: are missing. I'm kind of going to contradict myself just
- 6:37Speaker 1: a little bit. They're missing DJ Reader if he walks
- 6:40Speaker 1: right and that's their impact defensive tackle. Replacing that with
- 6:44Speaker 1: Tier three guys is probably not gonna work. You're not
- 6:47Speaker 1: gonna get the same level of play. We understand that
- 6:49Speaker 1: there are some things you have to accept when a big,
- 6:52Speaker 1: big name guy, big time player leaves your building. But
- 6:55Speaker 1: if you can get a top guy, if it fits
- 6:58Speaker 1: how the Bengals do contracts, if he wants to come here,
- 7:00Speaker 1: I'm not going to deny it because I'm watching the
- 7:02Speaker 1: playoffs and what I came away with in the playoffs
- 7:04Speaker 1: this year was filling the roster around superstars. It Let
- 7:09Speaker 1: Chris Jones win on third down, right, let Travis Kelsey
- 7:12Speaker 1: win on third down on offense, and fill in the
- 7:14Speaker 1: rest the rest. It matters, But does it matter as
- 7:17Speaker 1: much as the guys that are going to make a
- 7:19Speaker 1: play for you when your team absolutely needs it. And
- 7:21Speaker 1: if that means Christian Wilkins Justin Metabike are those guys,
- 7:25Speaker 1: then you do it and you figure out the rest afterwards.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Joe Goodbarry is our guest. The draft gurus say this
- 7:32Speaker 2: is a great year. If you're trying to draft an
- 7:34Speaker 2: offensive tackle. Pro Football Focus has nine tackles in their
- 7:38Speaker 2: top thirty one players, so potentially nine guys I guess
- 7:42Speaker 2: that could go in the first round. Would you use
- 7:44Speaker 2: the eighteenth pick on the draft to replace Jonah Williams
- 7:47Speaker 2: at right tackle?
- 7:50Speaker 1: I think that should be goal number one is to
- 7:53Speaker 1: not just replace Jonah? Could you have to do that?
- 7:55Speaker 1: He's the you know, he's been the mainstay now since
- 7:58Speaker 1: the Super Bowl season. He's been a He's had his issues.
- 8:01Speaker 1: He probably never grew into the guy some hoped he
- 8:04Speaker 1: would be in the first round. And that's you know,
- 8:06Speaker 1: here we are back in that situation of saying, Okay,
- 8:08Speaker 1: what can we learn from that? What can we learn
- 8:10Speaker 1: from the past misses on the offensive line? When we're
- 8:12Speaker 1: picking eighteen and if there's a guy there, and to me,
- 8:15Speaker 1: this class really helps you get over the hangover by
- 8:19Speaker 1: providing everything you need in one cocktail with all of
- 8:21Speaker 1: these guys. I mean, most of these guys have great size,
- 8:25Speaker 1: great length, great mass to them. Three hundred and thirty
- 8:27Speaker 1: to three hundred and forty five pounds. For some of
- 8:29Speaker 1: these guys like J. C. Latham and Tellyfuaga out of
- 8:32Speaker 1: Oregon State, and if they test well, because they think
- 8:36Speaker 1: That's the other part that when the Bengals have missed
- 8:38Speaker 1: in the draft, it's been guys that either haven't tested
- 8:41Speaker 1: at some point and all the data says that this
- 8:43Speaker 1: is very predictive for offensive lineman. You have to be
- 8:46Speaker 1: a great athlete because you're blocking the Chris Jones, you're
- 8:49Speaker 1: blocking the TJ. Watt and Miles Garrett. These guys are freaks.
- 8:52Speaker 1: You need freak offensive linemen. So when they've drafted Billy Price,
- 8:55Speaker 1: Cedric o'boy he, Jackson Carmen, none of them tested before
- 8:58Speaker 1: the Combine, you can say, yeah, rely on the tape
- 9:01Speaker 1: and see if they're athletes. But the tape lies. It
- 9:03Speaker 1: lies to everyone. It's why teams miss, It's why we
- 9:05Speaker 1: all miss on evaluating talent and players use the data
- 9:09Speaker 1: to help you. There should be a guy that tests
- 9:11Speaker 1: well enough at that at that pick at eighteen, that
- 9:14Speaker 1: has the size and length that would be something Jonah
- 9:17Speaker 1: Williams never really had and I think that's what he
- 9:19Speaker 1: struggled with the most. So yes, if you can, I
- 9:23Speaker 1: believe the way to get the best offensive lineman, and
- 9:26Speaker 1: it's not just a personal belief. It's proven. You have
- 9:29Speaker 1: to draft these guys in the first round. It's where
- 9:31Speaker 1: they come from. They go in the top twenty. If
- 9:34Speaker 1: you're sitting there and a guy's there that you believe
- 9:36Speaker 1: is a starting tackle in this league, it take them
- 9:38Speaker 1: because you can't find them elsewhere unless you're going to
- 9:40Speaker 1: overpay in free agency. Because even how I describe Joana Williams,
- 9:43Speaker 1: there's projections. I say he's gonna get fifteen million dollars
- 9:46Speaker 1: in free agency. I mean think about that. That's average
- 9:49Speaker 1: play fifteen million. It's a huge chunk. And I don't
- 9:52Speaker 1: think the Bengals can swallow that right now with the
- 9:54Speaker 1: way they're built. So it aligns with drafting one in
- 9:56Speaker 1: the first round.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Let's say that they don't. Let's say that there's a
- 10:00Speaker 2: player that they love at eighteen, they feel like this
- 10:03Speaker 2: is the guy that's got the highest ceiling, whether it's
- 10:06Speaker 2: brock powers or a defensive tackle, whatever, and they take
- 10:09Speaker 2: that guy. Are there free agents out there that you
- 10:13Speaker 2: like as a starting right tackle that again would be
- 10:17Speaker 2: probably in that tier two tier three range.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think they're all tier three. To be
- 10:22Speaker 1: honest with you, I have Michael and when you we
- 10:24Speaker 1: do a grading scale every year where it's other guys,
- 10:28Speaker 1: other content creators that say, Okay, what do you think
- 10:30Speaker 1: this free agent is? And I put a two point
- 10:33Speaker 1: five on Michael And when you the tackle guard from
- 10:36Speaker 1: the Patriots, I think he's probably the best free agent
- 10:39Speaker 1: tackle out there. But teams may see him as a guard.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Many did coming out of the draft. He's barely six ' four,
- 10:45Speaker 1: good size, three thirty plus. I mean more than that
- 10:47Speaker 1: probably now, but whenever you see that height, teams like
- 10:50Speaker 1: to kick those guys inside. And I think he's played
- 10:52Speaker 1: better as a guard as well. He's actually taking more
- 10:55Speaker 1: snaps that guard than he has tackle in the NFL.
- 10:57Speaker 1: So I could see teams just saying, now he's a guard,
- 11:00Speaker 1: not really a tackle. But if he is, and if
- 11:01Speaker 1: he is for your team, I think he's the best
- 11:03Speaker 1: one available. I put a three on Jonah Williams. I
- 11:05Speaker 1: put a three on Jermaine illuminor the right tackle from
- 11:08Speaker 1: the Raiders, who will be twenty nine point eight years
- 11:11Speaker 1: old on kick off a week one of the season.
- 11:14Speaker 1: That makes it a little bit tough. I don't know
- 11:15Speaker 1: what the Bengals like to swim in those waters of
- 11:17Speaker 1: the twenty nine thirty thirty one range when they go
- 11:20Speaker 1: for free agents, but offensive line is a different breed.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I mean, you've got to go for these guys. You
- 11:24Speaker 1: can't get everything in free agency. I think he's a
- 11:27Speaker 1: baseline level starting tackle. Do I think he's better in Jonah?
- 11:30Speaker 1: Not really sure, but if I can pay him half
- 11:32Speaker 1: the money, I think that's a value there. And then
- 11:34Speaker 1: it comes down to the last guy to me is
- 11:36Speaker 1: Trent Brown, the other tackle for the New England Patriots.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Again very similar to Orlando Brown. Massive guy doesn't move
- 11:44Speaker 1: as well anymore. There's been times where he hasn't been
- 11:46Speaker 1: able to practice because he's dealing with different issues. He's
- 11:49Speaker 1: left to Patriots before and did not find success. You
- 11:52Speaker 1: always got to be weary of that when a guy
- 11:53Speaker 1: is better in one system or in one environment and
- 11:56Speaker 1: can't replicate it elsewhere. So I don't know what kind
- 11:59Speaker 1: of deal he's going to get, but I think he's
- 12:00Speaker 1: probably the last average to above average starter that's available
- 12:04Speaker 1: in this class. So it's bleak. You may come away
- 12:07Speaker 1: with a spot starter or a patch job Riley Reef
- 12:11Speaker 1: type of signing and say, hey, that doesn't preclude us
- 12:14Speaker 1: from drafting a guy at eighteen, even if it's Jermaine
- 12:17Speaker 1: Luminor at seven and a half million dollars a year,
- 12:18Speaker 1: which he's projected to get. That doesn't stop you from
- 12:21Speaker 1: drafting a stud at eighteen. And maybe you say, hey,
- 12:24Speaker 1: we have a battle now at right tackle or a
- 12:25Speaker 1: battle at left guard, and we let that guy play
- 12:28Speaker 1: it for his rookie year at that's at one of
- 12:29Speaker 1: those two spots. If he can win one and get
- 12:32Speaker 1: him his experience and his feet wet as a rookie
- 12:34Speaker 1: and move on, and you have the five best offensive
- 12:36Speaker 1: line him to play, which isn't something they've had the
- 12:39Speaker 1: luxury of doing for a while.
- 12:41Speaker 2: So, Joe, many Bengals fans, as you know, have locked
- 12:44Speaker 2: in on Georgia tight end brock Bauers as their dream
- 12:47Speaker 2: draft pick. If he's there, do you think he will be?
- 12:50Speaker 2: And if he is, does it become a no brainer?
- 12:54Speaker 1: Tough questions for sure, because I think just profile wise,
- 12:59Speaker 1: brock ours is the best Titan we've seen since we've
- 13:02Speaker 1: been using data and using everything at our disposal, and
- 13:05Speaker 1: his production scores are insane. He did it at a
- 13:08Speaker 1: young age. He did it in a great conference and
- 13:10Speaker 1: in the biggest games. Having said that, I do think
- 13:14Speaker 1: he's going to measure smaller than what people expect me.
- 13:16Speaker 1: I think a couple of years ago people were like,
- 13:18Speaker 1: this is the next Gronk, and then you see that
- 13:19Speaker 1: picture at the combine You're like, yeah, he's not Gronk.
- 13:21Speaker 1: I mean, Gronk's a full grown man next to him,
- 13:23Speaker 1: and Owers is still young, so he can develop and
- 13:27Speaker 1: fill out and he will. But he looks and he's
- 13:29Speaker 1: listed at six four, two forty, which is interesting because
- 13:32Speaker 1: that's definitely not Gronk at six six to sixty five, right,
- 13:35Speaker 1: But he may be under six four, and he may
- 13:38Speaker 1: be two thirty five, and let's hope not. Let's hope
- 13:41Speaker 1: he's he's a little bit bigger than that. But if
- 13:42Speaker 1: he does, that's going to hurt some teams and how
- 13:45Speaker 1: they evaluate it and say, is he worth a top
- 13:47Speaker 1: ten pick? And I expect him to test really, really well,
- 13:50Speaker 1: so maybe that'll balance everything out. But to me, a
- 13:52Speaker 1: lot of times when I'm watching, I'm like, that's a
- 13:54Speaker 1: big slot receiver. That's Travis Kelce. That's a move type
- 13:58Speaker 1: tight end, so it's not your traditional y tight end
- 14:02Speaker 1: that's on the line, and I'm gonna do a lot
- 14:04Speaker 1: of the dirty work. Remember they paired Darnel Washington with
- 14:07Speaker 1: Brock Bowers at Georgia and that was the polar opposite
- 14:09Speaker 1: in terms of size and blocking and power. And they
- 14:12Speaker 1: use Darnell Washington to do that and they use brock
- 14:14Speaker 1: Bowers more as the big slot moved tight end. But
- 14:17Speaker 1: in my opinion, I think if that's not good enough
- 14:20Speaker 1: for the top teams, once it gets to the Bengals,
- 14:22Speaker 1: that may be perfect for them because the Bengals are
- 14:25Speaker 1: probably losing Tyler Boyd this offseason. They probably have t
- 14:28Speaker 1: Higgins for one more year on a franchise tag. They
- 14:30Speaker 1: need that third option this year that can grow into
- 14:32Speaker 1: a number two option. And this is gonna come after
- 14:36Speaker 1: the free agency. So the way we started this conversation,
- 14:38Speaker 1: the Bengals are probably going to sign a veteran free agent.
- 14:41Speaker 1: They have how many years in a row now at
- 14:43Speaker 1: tight end and maybe that's just Drew Sample and Tanner Hudson.
- 14:47Speaker 1: But what you get in Brock Bowers is something that
- 14:49Speaker 1: those guys can't do as expected if you're going to
- 14:52Speaker 1: spend a top pick. And I think the next question
- 14:54Speaker 1: people have is are there enough targets and would they
- 14:57Speaker 1: use them correctly, because we haven't really seen that too
- 14:59Speaker 1: much out of time end, and we're talking replacing Tyler
- 15:02Speaker 1: Boyd as a slot guy and getting some of the
- 15:05Speaker 1: tight end targets. Bengals a one hundred and fifteen targets
- 15:07Speaker 1: at tight end last year, they had ninety eight to
- 15:09Speaker 1: Tyler Boyd. So let's just say two hundred, and let's
- 15:11Speaker 1: say andre Yosubash and Charlie Jones are going to elevate
- 15:13Speaker 1: in year two and get a chunk of that, so
- 15:15Speaker 1: maybe sixty targets go to them. We're still at one
- 15:18Speaker 1: forty and say we still want to give some to
- 15:20Speaker 1: Sample and Tanner Hudson. I think we can easily get
- 15:23Speaker 1: to ninety targets left for brock Bowers as the number
- 15:26Speaker 1: three option, very similar to where Boyd was the last
- 15:28Speaker 1: few years. And I think that's completely worth it. And
- 15:31Speaker 1: what he could develop into is maybe your number two guy. Yes,
- 15:34Speaker 1: I'm for it. And I think that's the scenario where
- 15:37Speaker 1: you set you kind of hinted to it earlier, where
- 15:39Speaker 1: it's you know what, we think this is the best
- 15:40Speaker 1: upside guy. We think this is the difference maker. Yes,
- 15:43Speaker 1: we know we need this, this and that, but this
- 15:45Speaker 1: guy in a couple of years or even in a year,
- 15:48Speaker 1: may be the difference maker on offense that helps us
- 15:50Speaker 1: survive losing some of these receivers.
- 15:53Speaker 2: You did a Bengals on the Brain video study of
- 15:55Speaker 2: Brock Bowers on one of your YouTube videos sponsored by
- 15:58Speaker 2: First Star Logistics. I was surprised when I watched that
- 16:01Speaker 2: how well he blocked, because we've all seen the receiving
- 16:05Speaker 2: highlights and the speed and the yards after catch, but
- 16:09Speaker 2: you had a lot of clips where he really handled
- 16:11Speaker 2: his guy as a blocker.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's a lot of credit to the way
- 16:16Speaker 1: Georgia used him, making sure that he can be on
- 16:19Speaker 1: motion coming back across, coming in from the slot and
- 16:22Speaker 1: clipping a defensive end, allowing him to climb up and
- 16:25Speaker 1: get a linebacker where he's not going to be out
- 16:27Speaker 1: matched in terms of size and strength. So I think
- 16:29Speaker 1: that is a blueprint to the role you would use him.
- 16:33Speaker 1: But yeah, I think he's fine. He is for what
- 16:36Speaker 1: you're going to ask him to do, he will get
- 16:37Speaker 1: the job done. And to be honest with you, the
- 16:39Speaker 1: Bengals don't even have that role. If they bring back
- 16:42Speaker 1: Drew Sample, that's your Twoerned sixty pounds y blocker that
- 16:45Speaker 1: can get on the line. But when they wanted to
- 16:47Speaker 1: go to Wilcox and Tanner Hudson in twelve personnel and
- 16:50Speaker 1: use those guys as the flex tight end and get
- 16:52Speaker 1: them blocking, they neither were good enough in my opinion,
- 16:54Speaker 1: And I think Flowers would be an extreme upgrade even
- 16:58Speaker 1: as a blocker in that role. And then you hint
- 17:01Speaker 1: it to it, I wanted to make sure we get it.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Yet his run after the catch was what makes him
- 17:05Speaker 1: the best tight end prospect in a long time, because
- 17:08Speaker 1: his numbers there are ninety ninth ninety eighth percentile across
- 17:11Speaker 1: the board for after the catch and making guys miss,
- 17:14Speaker 1: and the Bengals don't have one of those guys either,
- 17:16Speaker 1: other than Jamar Chase. It seems like the only guy
- 17:17Speaker 1: that can give screens to and run the RPOs too
- 17:21Speaker 1: and give them the jet sweeps, it's Chase. It's hard
- 17:23Speaker 1: to continue to do that because defenses seems so hyper
- 17:25Speaker 1: focused on it. Bowers gives you another guy to give
- 17:28Speaker 1: you a little bit after the catch.
- 17:30Speaker 2: So brock Powers is going to continue to be the
- 17:33Speaker 2: dream pick for many Bengals fans. After listening to this
- 17:36Speaker 2: let's talk about t Higgins. You alluded to it. I
- 17:38Speaker 2: think most people, myself included, expect the Bengals to franchise
- 17:42Speaker 2: Tag Tea for this year and then eventually extend Jamar
- 17:47Speaker 2: Chase and lose T as a free agent. What would
- 17:50Speaker 2: you do and why?
- 17:53Speaker 1: Yeah, it's hard because the tag makes a lot of sense,
- 17:56Speaker 1: and the way that he's coming off of probably his
- 17:59Speaker 1: worst career, dealing with injuries, dealing with quarterback turmoil, you know,
- 18:04Speaker 1: and that was going to kill anyone's numbers. I think
- 18:06Speaker 1: even when even as way the way that Jake Browning
- 18:09Speaker 1: did play in the second half, it still has an impact.
- 18:12Speaker 1: But I think you want to keep him and keep
- 18:15Speaker 1: the band together as best as possible. That means if
- 18:19Speaker 1: they have to tag him because we don't expect an
- 18:21Speaker 1: extension to happen for whatever reason, right, I think it's
- 18:24Speaker 1: guaranteed money and and the Bengals don't typically swim in
- 18:28Speaker 1: those waters and go too deep in them, so I
- 18:30Speaker 1: think that'll probably be the impass where a deal doesn't
- 18:32Speaker 1: get done, because the best option would be getting a
- 18:36Speaker 1: deal done and lowering that cap hit from the what
- 18:38Speaker 1: is going to be the franchise tag just under twenty
- 18:40Speaker 1: two million dollars and lowering it to ten million even
- 18:43Speaker 1: if you can, and a lot of teams would that
- 18:45Speaker 1: are going to extend T. Jiggins they want, they would
- 18:47Speaker 1: push off those big capts the future years. It would
- 18:50Speaker 1: provide you some relief. That could be the difference between
- 18:52Speaker 1: signing a starting defensive tackle or not. So the most
- 18:57Speaker 1: flexibility would be to extend him. But then you get
- 18:59Speaker 1: into a few years where it's should we pay thirty
- 19:02Speaker 1: five percent of our cap to three players? Meaning Joe Burrow,
- 19:06Speaker 1: Jamar Chase and T Higgins When the Bengals went to
- 19:08Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. Those guys were cheap, right, It's not
- 19:10Speaker 1: really I even said run it back with these three,
- 19:12Speaker 1: But is it running it back when those guys cost
- 19:15Speaker 1: four times as much? Not really, because now you need
- 19:18Speaker 1: to fill in. You need to have another Burrow, Chase
- 19:21Speaker 1: and Higgins on rookie deals at other positions. So you
- 19:24Speaker 1: need to nail or hope that Dax Hill and Miles
- 19:27Speaker 1: Murphy and maybe it's brock Hoers this year Johnny Newton.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Are those impact players for cheap and that's what gets
- 19:33Speaker 1: you back over the hump and replaces the value that
- 19:36Speaker 1: you're losing by extending the Burrow, the Chase and the Higgins.
- 19:39Speaker 1: What you have to do and you want to do,
- 19:41Speaker 1: and you hate when you see these guys walk after
- 19:43Speaker 1: four or five years, the Jesse Bates or even I mean,
- 19:47Speaker 1: I'm watching a free agent talk and Kevin Zeitler is
- 19:50Speaker 1: still playing and still playing at a high level, and
- 19:52Speaker 1: it still burns that you couldn't find a way to
- 19:55Speaker 1: keep a guy that should have been a ten year
- 19:56Speaker 1: player for you. And let's fill in the rest, keep
- 19:59Speaker 1: your good players, fill in the rest, figure it out.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Draft well, because you have to draft well anyway once
- 20:05Speaker 1: you start. I mean you have to draft well no
- 20:06Speaker 1: matter what your what spot on the timeline you're on.
- 20:09Speaker 1: But once you pay that quarterback big money, it is
- 20:12Speaker 1: the single most important thing you can do for your
- 20:14Speaker 1: franchise is to draft and find cheap talent. And I
- 20:17Speaker 1: don't think the Chiefs, even without the draft class they
- 20:20Speaker 1: had a couple of years ago, get back to the
- 20:21Speaker 1: Super Bowl and win it two years in a row
- 20:23Speaker 1: without those classes, and it just shows you how important
- 20:26Speaker 1: it is. So you know, I'm down for whatever it is,
- 20:29Speaker 1: whether that's tagging trade get more picks, which I don't
- 20:31Speaker 1: think is a realistic option either. I just don't think
- 20:34Speaker 1: teams will value or match the value the Bengals half
- 20:37Speaker 1: for Tea. I think the Bengals love t and see
- 20:38Speaker 1: them as a true wide receiver, one which would demand
- 20:41Speaker 1: a first round pick and a strong wide receiver class.
- 20:44Speaker 1: I don't see that ever matching up and happening. But yes,
- 20:48Speaker 1: I think that they're either option. There are hurdles to it,
- 20:51Speaker 1: and you've got to get creative with the rest of
- 20:53Speaker 1: your cap space.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Joe Goodbarry is our guest. You can follow him on
- 20:57Speaker 2: x at Joe Goodberry. In your free agent simulation, you
- 21:02Speaker 2: cut Joe Mixon and you cut Nick Scott for cap room.
- 21:06Speaker 2: I think everybody could understand why they would let Nick
- 21:08Speaker 2: Scott go, But there's more of a debate on Joe. Obviously,
- 21:11Speaker 2: he was still productive last year with more than fourteen
- 21:13Speaker 2: hundred total offensive yards. Give us your rationale for cutting
- 21:17Speaker 2: Joe Mixon.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Yeah, it largely comes down to when that new deal
- 21:23Speaker 1: happened last year, and talking to people when it happened,
- 21:26Speaker 1: it felt like from what I was told that this
- 21:29Speaker 1: would be a one year thing unless he does Unless
- 21:31Speaker 1: he performs really well in that contract as a value
- 21:34Speaker 1: in year two, and he may have. That's the thing.
- 21:36Speaker 1: So like I'm kind of debating, like what do they think.
- 21:38Speaker 1: I actually don't know. Is he going to get cut?
- 21:40Speaker 1: He has a roster bonus of three million and twenty
- 21:42Speaker 1: eight dollars a few days after the league year starts,
- 21:46Speaker 1: and that'll probably be our indicator if they in the
- 21:50Speaker 1: right away in the tampering period, and then those three
- 21:53Speaker 1: days if they are talking the running backs, free agent
- 21:56Speaker 1: running backs, if they sign a free agent running back,
- 21:58Speaker 1: well then the writing is on the wall and they
- 22:00Speaker 1: don't want to pay that three million because if you
- 22:03Speaker 1: do pay that signing bonus or that roster bonus of
- 22:06Speaker 1: three million, it pretty much locks him on the roster.
- 22:09Speaker 1: You're not gonna pay a guy that and then cut
- 22:10Speaker 1: him two three months later. It doesn't make any sense.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Teams don't do that, so they make those decisions at
- 22:15Speaker 1: that point. And so I don't think, well, I think
- 22:18Speaker 1: it could happen because of that. I don't think the
- 22:21Speaker 1: savings is as big as some people that really want
- 22:23Speaker 1: to cut Joe Mixon. You get five and a half million,
- 22:27Speaker 1: but are you gonna spend three and a half on
- 22:28Speaker 1: a Devin Singletary or whoever it may be, insert any
- 22:31Speaker 1: running back. Then you're really only saving two million. Is
- 22:34Speaker 1: it worth it? I mean, you got a guy that
- 22:35Speaker 1: is consistent that the locker room loves. That is a
- 22:38Speaker 1: power runner that you don't have on the roster right
- 22:40Speaker 1: now that if you need it to give it to
- 22:42Speaker 1: him thirty times, he can handle it. And also he
- 22:45Speaker 1: never fumbles. So there are traits that I want in
- 22:48Speaker 1: the next running back or with Joe Mixon, I want
- 22:51Speaker 1: a guy like that in the backfield. I just wonder
- 22:53Speaker 1: if you can find that production from an AJ Dillon
- 22:56Speaker 1: right that's two hundred and twenty five, two hundred and
- 22:58Speaker 1: thirty pounds with thighs like tree trunks, and give them
- 23:02Speaker 1: one and a half two and a half million dollars
- 23:04Speaker 1: and save a lot of money. And you take that
- 23:05Speaker 1: money and you put it towards the tight end, you
- 23:07Speaker 1: put it towards a right tackle, or you put it
- 23:09Speaker 1: towards the defensive tackle. And is that money better spent?
- 23:13Speaker 1: All of the numbers and all the advanced analytics just
- 23:17Speaker 1: say running back is replaceable, and spending any money there
- 23:20Speaker 1: is probably not the wisest decision.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Joe Mixon was a second round pick. Jeremy Hill was
- 23:25Speaker 2: the second round pick. Giovanni Bernard was a second round
- 23:29Speaker 2: pick going way back Corey Dillon. Perhaps the greatest running
- 23:32Speaker 2: back they've ever had was a second round pick. So
- 23:35Speaker 2: historically that's been the sweet spot for the Bengals to
- 23:39Speaker 2: find running backs that have been the running back for
- 23:41Speaker 2: several years in a row. Do you think that still
- 23:44Speaker 2: applies or if we hit a point now in the
- 23:46Speaker 2: NFL where you'll find them in the third round or
- 23:49Speaker 2: fourth round, or in Isaiah Paiceko's case, the seventh round.
- 23:53Speaker 1: You can find those guys late. But the data doesn't
- 23:56Speaker 1: go that far. It says you still need to prioritize it.
- 23:59Speaker 1: It's just a down a rung from the other position.
- 24:01Speaker 1: So second and third round are still the sweet spots
- 24:04Speaker 1: for that position with the largest hit rate. And if
- 24:07Speaker 1: you're looking for an impact runner, which I think you do,
- 24:09Speaker 1: you don't want to just put anyone back there and say,
- 24:11Speaker 1: hey we're getting three point eight yards per carry, hooray. No,
- 24:14Speaker 1: you're looking for more. You want the explosive runs. You
- 24:16Speaker 1: want the guy that can run some routes from the
- 24:18Speaker 1: backfield and be a difference maker, whether that's with his speed,
- 24:21Speaker 1: with his pass catching, even past blocking. They could use
- 24:24Speaker 1: a guy that even specializes in that. And in my
- 24:27Speaker 1: off season mock, I ended up taking a running back
- 24:29Speaker 1: in the third round because I do think if you
- 24:31Speaker 1: cut mixing even signing a low end guy and then
- 24:35Speaker 1: and I took Deonta Foreman, same draft classes, mixing actually,
- 24:38Speaker 1: but you know you get them for a million and
- 24:39Speaker 1: a half to be your power runner beer number three runner.
- 24:43Speaker 1: You turn around and draft a guy in the second
- 24:45Speaker 1: or third round, and I think the Bengals would focus
- 24:47Speaker 1: on that. They value running back, they always have. They
- 24:50Speaker 1: draft them, even the guys that don't work out Kenny
- 24:52Speaker 1: Irons right, Chris Perry in the first round. They value
- 24:55Speaker 1: running back. They see that the guy is going to
- 24:57Speaker 1: touch the ball second most on offense, and they want
- 24:59Speaker 1: to trust that guy to be if you have to
- 25:02Speaker 1: lean on him and he has to carry you for
- 25:03Speaker 1: a game or two, they want to do that. And
- 25:05Speaker 1: I think this class, while it's much weaker than last year,
- 25:08Speaker 1: I think Chase Brown probably goes. He probably gets second
- 25:11Speaker 1: third round talk which is where we had him graded
- 25:13Speaker 1: last year anyways in our process, but he would be
- 25:16Speaker 1: in the top five or six in this class. In
- 25:19Speaker 1: this class is a little bit weaker, but there are
- 25:20Speaker 1: good players on Day two, and I think the Bengals
- 25:23Speaker 1: would prioritize it should it be.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Awougie is a free agent. The Bengals have Cam Taylor, Bread,
- 25:29Speaker 2: DJ Turner, and Mike Hilton. They are obviously going to
- 25:31Speaker 2: need a corner that's capable of starting. Is there anybody
- 25:36Speaker 2: out there that you like in free agency?
- 25:39Speaker 1: Sure? I mean it's a if you want to go
- 25:41Speaker 1: for the defences, with a Jalen Johnson swing for the
- 25:44Speaker 1: fences or a lagarious need. I don't think that's where
- 25:47Speaker 1: they want to play. I think there are some positions
- 25:49Speaker 1: that they have to say, hey, we're going to go
- 25:51Speaker 1: with value here, and I think one of them was
- 25:53Speaker 1: safety last year. I think this year could be corner.
- 25:56Speaker 1: You have one more year with Mike Hilton on a
- 25:57Speaker 1: big deal, and it's not even it's been a value.
- 26:00Speaker 1: It's been actually a great signing for them. But in
- 26:02Speaker 1: a year you could potentially have three cheap players at
- 26:06Speaker 1: those positions and cheap safeties, and I think that's part
- 26:10Speaker 1: of the pie that you have to slice up if
- 26:12Speaker 1: you're gonna go heavy at wide receiver. They had the
- 26:15Speaker 1: fifth most expensive OAL lines and D lines last year.
- 26:18Speaker 1: If you're gonna do that, then you have to go
- 26:20Speaker 1: cheap at some positions, and they've decided to tight end
- 26:22Speaker 1: safety and potentially cornered. I do think they would want
- 26:25Speaker 1: to bring in a fourth guy that can start. I
- 26:28Speaker 1: don't think it's a guy that has to start. I
- 26:30Speaker 1: think it's like, Okay, if Turner isn't capable of being
- 26:35Speaker 1: a every play guy or an every game guy, or
- 26:37Speaker 1: doesn't take a step in year two, or Cam Taylor
- 26:39Speaker 1: Britt deals with injuries in year three, again, we need
- 26:42Speaker 1: a guy that can step into that role. And I
- 26:43Speaker 1: think every team wants that. So I do think there
- 26:46Speaker 1: is some a little bit of piece of the pie
- 26:48Speaker 1: that they could slice off there and retain for that
- 26:50Speaker 1: fourth guy that's a veteran, and maybe it's we're talking
- 26:53Speaker 1: four million dollars a year for a Dane Jackson from Buffalo.
- 26:55Speaker 1: That's what I did in the simulation, and I think
- 26:57Speaker 1: that makes a lot of sense to play all three
- 26:59Speaker 1: positions and can start for you as needed. Or I
- 27:02Speaker 1: do think because they've always drafted corners and always find
- 27:05Speaker 1: a way to see a guy's of value at some spot.
- 27:09Speaker 1: I do think there is a potential there that they
- 27:11Speaker 1: draft a corner and whether that's third, fourth, fifth round
- 27:14Speaker 1: that can come in and potentially be your backup guy.
- 27:17Speaker 1: And because you know, I probably didn't think this way
- 27:19Speaker 1: until dj Ivy in that last game got hurt, where
- 27:21Speaker 1: it was like, man, that's a bummer. You may not
- 27:23Speaker 1: see that guy to the end of camp or even
- 27:24Speaker 1: into the season because of how late that injury happened.
- 27:27Speaker 1: But he looked like he could have been developing into
- 27:29Speaker 1: that corner four. And now they've got some questions there
- 27:32Speaker 1: and they're gonna have to address it, Joe.
- 27:34Speaker 2: The Bengals made some coaching changes in the offseason. Dan
- 27:37Speaker 2: Pitcher has been promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Brad Craig thorpe replaces him as the quarterbacks coach. They've
- 27:44Speaker 2: also brought in Justin Rescatti for a new spot, the
- 27:49Speaker 2: past game coordinator. What if anything, do you infer from
- 27:54Speaker 2: the Bengals adding somebody with that title.
- 27:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's fun. Number One. I've noticed this
- 27:59Speaker 1: around the league, Like I've how many teams are saying
- 28:02Speaker 1: this is a pass game coordinator and I go click
- 28:04Speaker 1: on him. It's a defensive guy. Wait, this is the
- 28:06Speaker 1: thing on defense. This is a run game coordinator. This
- 28:08Speaker 1: is an outside linebacker pass RUSS coach. So we're seeing
- 28:12Speaker 1: it on the offensive side as well. We've seen run
- 28:14Speaker 1: game coordinator. Frank Pollack's been that for a few years now,
- 28:16Speaker 1: and now we're getting a pass game coordinator. What I'm
- 28:19Speaker 1: inferring from that is what they lost with Brian Callahan.
- 28:23Speaker 1: They felt that he can replace it, and the Bengals
- 28:26Speaker 1: break down there and there's a lot of questions always,
- 28:28Speaker 1: so if Zach Taylor calls plays, what does the coordinator
- 28:30Speaker 1: actually do? Well, he's the manager of everyone that takes
- 28:33Speaker 1: part in designing, building and running this offense, right, So
- 28:36Speaker 1: that was Brian Callahan, But also the Bengals divvy up
- 28:39Speaker 1: responsibilities within their coaches, like Troy Walters does red zone,
- 28:43Speaker 1: red zone packages and concepts and make sure everyone on
- 28:45Speaker 1: the offense knows what they're doing there. Dan Pitcher was
- 28:48Speaker 1: doing third downs, so you know they divided up that way.
- 28:51Speaker 1: We have Frank Pollack is the run game o line,
- 28:53Speaker 1: but Brian Callahan also had blitz pickups and protections. And
- 28:57Speaker 1: we got a guy here that was a former quarterback
- 28:59Speaker 1: in Rascotti that also coached offensive line, and I'm like, yeah,
- 29:02Speaker 1: that makes sense. Now we're talking, and he's got a
- 29:04Speaker 1: video when he was with the Broncos that I watched.
- 29:06Speaker 1: It was protection. Six man protection, so keeping a tight
- 29:09Speaker 1: end and keeping a running back in things the Bengals
- 29:12Speaker 1: didn't do often with Burrow. They like to go five wide,
- 29:14Speaker 1: spread it out and just say these are our five.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Let's see what the defense is doing, and let's let's
- 29:18Speaker 1: pick up the blitzer, pick up the pass rush accordingly.
- 29:22Speaker 1: But then when they had Browning in there, and you
- 29:23Speaker 1: see the way the game is changing anyways, when the
- 29:25Speaker 1: league is changing, more blockers, keeping everything condensed in trying
- 29:29Speaker 1: to confuse the defense rather than make him declare who's
- 29:32Speaker 1: coming and going, which Burrow seems to like. But you
- 29:34Speaker 1: may want to absorb more six and seven man protections.
- 29:38Speaker 1: We saw when Browning was in there, and it worked
- 29:40Speaker 1: in a lot of ways. I think that's going to
- 29:42Speaker 1: be a next step for this offense. And you're coming
- 29:45Speaker 1: from a Vikings offense that's heavy on play action, heavy
- 29:48Speaker 1: on moving your number one ride receiver around and force
- 29:50Speaker 1: feeding him targets. I think you could absorb some of
- 29:52Speaker 1: that as well, so it makes a lot of sense
- 29:56Speaker 1: from we need to replace what we lost in Kalahan,
- 29:58Speaker 1: but also what can this guy I bring to the
- 30:00Speaker 1: table to help the evolution of this offense?
- 30:04Speaker 2: Following up on that, from some of those things that
- 30:06Speaker 2: you just alluded to, from a scheme standpoint, what do
- 30:10Speaker 2: you think is the greatest need? More play action, more
- 30:14Speaker 2: under center snaps, more multiple tight ends. Is there something
- 30:18Speaker 2: specific that you would most like to see?
- 30:21Speaker 1: Yeah, all of that sounds great, to be honest, with you,
- 30:23Speaker 1: being more multiple, being more versatile, being able to go
- 30:27Speaker 1: into twelve personnel more often with two tight ends, not
- 30:31Speaker 1: living in three wide receivers consistently. I understand that's what
- 30:35Speaker 1: they're best at. But because you had Higgins and Boyd,
- 30:38Speaker 1: I mean, why wouldn't you that number two tight end
- 30:40Speaker 1: has to be better than Boyd in order to get
- 30:41Speaker 1: on the field right or else You're doing yourself a
- 30:43Speaker 1: disservice in many ways. But I would like to see
- 30:47Speaker 1: so a few things here. I'd like to see speed,
- 30:49Speaker 1: elusiveness at running back, but I'd like to see more
- 30:51Speaker 1: speed at the receiver and tight end position as well.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Can I get guys that can run after the catch?
- 30:55Speaker 1: Can I run more bubble screens with other guys. Maybe
- 30:58Speaker 1: that's Charlie Jones add some of that with his punt returnability.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Maybe that's a brock Bowers at tight end that can
- 31:03Speaker 1: do these things. But I do think they need to
- 31:06Speaker 1: get more dynamic playmakers with the ball in their hands.
- 31:09Speaker 1: The Bengals Jake Browning and Joe Burrow last year were
- 31:12Speaker 1: the lowest depth of target so yards per attempt in
- 31:15Speaker 1: the league in terms of where the ball is being targeted.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes is low there. So that's really an indication
- 31:20Speaker 1: of what defenses are doing to you to really put
- 31:23Speaker 1: a cap on your offense. So you have to work
- 31:25Speaker 1: from underneath and get guys that can make plays after
- 31:28Speaker 1: the catch. I think it's a big need for them.
- 31:30Speaker 1: But also then you bring it in and condense things
- 31:33Speaker 1: and run more play actions and try to create explosive
- 31:36Speaker 1: shot plays that are designed to hey, this is our time,
- 31:40Speaker 1: this we're at the fifty, it's first down, it's second
- 31:42Speaker 1: in short, whatever it is, let's take a shot now,
- 31:44Speaker 1: let's call it, let's run it now. And they didn't
- 31:47Speaker 1: end up in a lot of those scenarios where they
- 31:49Speaker 1: could do it, especially when Burrow couldn't go under center.
- 31:51Speaker 1: It felt like when we got to that Arizona game
- 31:54Speaker 1: and then the forty nine er game, it was like, Yeah,
- 31:56Speaker 1: this is now we can see him start to do
- 31:58Speaker 1: some of these things they always wanted to before we
- 32:00Speaker 1: got hurt, before that calf got hurt. Those first few
- 32:03Speaker 1: days of camp, all the clips were getting are look
- 32:05Speaker 1: at the RPOs, look at the play action, look at
- 32:07Speaker 1: Burrow moving in the pocket and extending plays and booting out,
- 32:09Speaker 1: and it was a natural progression for this offense. It's
- 32:12Speaker 1: a shame we never got to see it fully happen.
- 32:15Speaker 1: But I do think that is a major step for
- 32:18Speaker 1: them in twenty twenty four.
- 32:20Speaker 2: The Joe Burrow contract extension doesn't really become a huge
- 32:24Speaker 2: cap hit until next year when it jumps from about
- 32:26Speaker 2: twenty nine million to forty six million. Does that make
- 32:30Speaker 2: this year critical in terms of reinforcements because of the
- 32:35Speaker 2: cap space.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt about it. I think this is the
- 32:38Speaker 1: most important offseason in Bengals history because I think they
- 32:41Speaker 1: have the quarterback that, in my opinion, should could end
- 32:44Speaker 1: up being the best quarterback in franchise history. If he's
- 32:47Speaker 1: not knocking on the door for some of the young
- 32:49Speaker 1: fans that already right. But you have a lot of
- 32:52Speaker 1: the talent that you need. You have had it the
- 32:55Speaker 1: last few years. To be honest with you, it's kind
- 32:57Speaker 1: of sad to look back from twenty twenty one to
- 32:59Speaker 1: twenty twenty three, say, man, they were so close. You
- 33:01Speaker 1: know they in alternate universes. There's a ring somewhere on
- 33:05Speaker 1: Joe Burrow's finger already, and so they're at the door.
- 33:09Speaker 1: They know what they have. They got the right guy,
- 33:11Speaker 1: which I think is step number one for any franchise.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Do you have the quarterback? Yes, we do. Do you
- 33:16Speaker 1: have the coaching staff around him and the support system
- 33:18Speaker 1: around him that can get them to play at his
- 33:21Speaker 1: very best and the surrounding talent at their very best?
- 33:23Speaker 1: I would say yes. Is for as much frustration as
- 33:25Speaker 1: fans have with the offense and think it should score
- 33:28Speaker 1: forty every game. Jamar Chase's broken records, Joe Burrow's broken records,
- 33:32Speaker 1: They've broken all franchise records, They've broken NFL records. Together.
- 33:36Speaker 1: They will continue to do that and exploit defenses throughout
- 33:39Speaker 1: the league. And I think a lot of that isn't
- 33:41Speaker 1: just their talent. You have to give some credit to
- 33:43Speaker 1: the coaches of putting them in position, and the drafting
- 33:45Speaker 1: and the organization of putting talent around them, which they
- 33:48Speaker 1: definitely have had. And maybe you have your poems about
- 33:51Speaker 1: the offensive line, but the weapons have been some of
- 33:53Speaker 1: the best in the league. But you are at a
- 33:56Speaker 1: reset point and that's not a bad thing. I think
- 33:58Speaker 1: that scares some fans when they say, you know, I
- 34:00Speaker 1: don't want to rebuild, and because that has a bad
- 34:03Speaker 1: connotation to it. But a reset point to bring in
- 34:06Speaker 1: to have that free agency where you get Hendrickson, where
- 34:09Speaker 1: you get Reader, where you get a woozy a, where
- 34:11Speaker 1: you get Hilton. You have that point here where they
- 34:14Speaker 1: have a lot of cap space. They have tremendous cap health.
- 34:17Speaker 1: You look at the rest of the league and the
- 34:18Speaker 1: teams that they're competing with, and the Chiefs have to
- 34:21Speaker 1: make some decisions. The Bills are forty million over the cap, right,
- 34:24Speaker 1: so like these the Ravens, same situation. These teams are
- 34:27Speaker 1: not in the position you are in if you want
- 34:29Speaker 1: to push it, if you want to stretch it. What
- 34:30Speaker 1: the Bengals don't really do with the cap, they don't
- 34:32Speaker 1: really push it in the future years. It's something that
- 34:34Speaker 1: I think they can do, but they don't need to yet.
- 34:37Speaker 1: They don't have to like these other teams do. They're
- 34:40Speaker 1: in a position to load up with new young players,
- 34:45Speaker 1: new free agents to twenty five to twenty six year
- 34:47Speaker 1: old Von Bells signings that are cheap that six million
- 34:49Speaker 1: dollars a year. You find a guy like that again
- 34:51Speaker 1: this offseason, and how much better do we feel about
- 34:54Speaker 1: whatever position that is that you find that guy. And
- 34:57Speaker 1: I think that puts you in position to if you
- 34:59Speaker 1: draft well, if you have a nice free agency man,
- 35:02Speaker 1: you're loaded up again around Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase,
- 35:04Speaker 1: which is really the key. And I'm ready to go
- 35:06Speaker 1: forward and watch that.
- 35:08Speaker 2: I mentioned some of the videos that I've watched recently
- 35:10Speaker 2: on Bengals on the Brain sponsored by First Star Logistics.
- 35:13Speaker 2: What are some things that we have to look forward
- 35:15Speaker 2: to coming up in the near future.
- 35:17Speaker 1: More film breakdowns. To be honest with you, I really
- 35:20Speaker 1: am interested in this offensive tackle class. I'm continuing that
- 35:24Speaker 1: with Telly Fuaga was the last one. I'm going to
- 35:26Speaker 1: try and get Amarius Mims out of Georgia. He has
- 35:29Speaker 1: like eight games starting, so it's very hard to find
- 35:31Speaker 1: the tape. I might just have to cut that up myself.
- 35:33Speaker 1: But we're gonna do free agent breakdowns and profiles guys
- 35:36Speaker 1: that I think are interesting because I, like you said,
- 35:39Speaker 1: you team, a lot of people are going to say, hey,
- 35:41Speaker 1: Chris Jones, why let's go after Chris Jones. I go
- 35:43Speaker 1: right down to tier three and I say, Okay, who's
- 35:45Speaker 1: twenty five and a half years old, who's twenty six
- 35:46Speaker 1: years old, who's just now entering their prime? That you
- 35:49Speaker 1: can get for a third of the price or half
- 35:51Speaker 1: the price Gino Stone at free safety for the Ravens,
- 35:54Speaker 1: right coming off a career year, twenty five years old
- 35:58Speaker 1: in projection at seven million dollars a year, boom sold.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Let me get that. Let me get a player that
- 36:02Speaker 1: leads the league in interceptions, right, And that's where I
- 36:05Speaker 1: want to play. And that's where I'm going to get
- 36:07Speaker 1: into in the future videos, but also a lot of
- 36:10Speaker 1: draft content. It's not just mock drafts. We have a
- 36:13Speaker 1: whole system with guys I work with and do this
- 36:16Speaker 1: with where we score in great prospects, we balance it
- 36:19Speaker 1: with advanced analytics, and we let it spit it out
- 36:21Speaker 1: and we don't touch it. After that, it says, hey,
- 36:23Speaker 1: this guy should go in the first round, and we
- 36:25Speaker 1: say great, because it's been pretty good for us. Although
- 36:28Speaker 1: we tweak it every year, it's fun to see it
- 36:30Speaker 1: play out and see how it goes.
- 36:32Speaker 2: You also offer exclusive content on Twitter or X if
- 36:36Speaker 2: people prefer referring to it as X these days. What
- 36:40Speaker 2: do people get if they subscribe?
- 36:42Speaker 1: You get one on one interaction and content. If you
- 36:45Speaker 1: have questions, I answer it. I'll do videos for you
- 36:48Speaker 1: right there and there. If someone says, hey, someone asked
- 36:50Speaker 1: me earlier, are the targets there for brock Bauers. So
- 36:53Speaker 1: I just recorded that, I'm going to send that to him.
- 36:55Speaker 1: And that's why I was so prepared when you asked me,
- 36:57Speaker 1: because I'm constantly answering questions, turning out content for them,
- 37:01Speaker 1: giving my opinion. I try to save my opinion for
- 37:04Speaker 1: the exclusive stuff. So I put out the data or
- 37:08Speaker 1: the videos or the film whatever if, and that's for
- 37:11Speaker 1: everyone on Twitter. And then I'll say, okay, so what
- 37:13Speaker 1: does this mean? And I'll go into the subscriber section
- 37:15Speaker 1: and I'll just we'll just talk and break it down
- 37:18Speaker 1: and have a conversation amongst people that are like minded
- 37:20Speaker 1: and want to go a little bit deeper.
- 37:22Speaker 2: Joe, you do extraordinary work. I'm a big fan. I
- 37:25Speaker 2: really appreciate your time today and I hope we can
- 37:27Speaker 2: do this again.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Thank you Dan for having me on.

- 37:53Speaker 2: Joe Goodbarry rave about Georgia tight end Brock Bowers and
- 37:57Speaker 2: describe what he could do for the Bengals passing attack.
- 38:00Speaker 1: Well.
- 38:00Speaker 2: The NFL Scouting Combine is coming up next week and
- 38:04Speaker 2: draft guru Daniel Jeremiah from the NFL Network has the
- 38:08Speaker 2: Bengals selecting Bowers with the eighteenth overall pick in his
- 38:12Speaker 2: latest mock draft, having said that he wrote the following
- 38:17Speaker 2: quote file this underfits that I selfishly want to see happen.
- 38:22Speaker 2: It's highly unlikely Bowers falls this far in round one,
- 38:26Speaker 2: but let's just pause and dream for a moment about
- 38:29Speaker 2: seeing him join forces with Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase. Unquote.
- 38:35Speaker 2: Jeremiah did a pre combined conference call with reporters this week,
- 38:40Speaker 2: and here's what he said about Bowers.
- 38:43Speaker 3: He's easy to great. I mean when you watch him,
- 38:45Speaker 3: he's super easy to gree He's one of the ten
- 38:47Speaker 3: best players in the draft. He's size wise, speed wise,
- 38:51Speaker 3: I think is going to be very is going to
- 38:53Speaker 3: favor Kittle. You know, when you look at him, I
- 38:56Speaker 3: think once we get a chance to see him, I
- 38:57Speaker 3: don't think we'll see him do much at the combine.
- 39:01Speaker 1: I think he might be one that's waiting until the
- 39:02Speaker 1: pro day. We'll have to wait and see on that one.
- 39:04Speaker 3: But similar size, similar speed, plays with just tenacity, especially
- 39:09Speaker 3: with the ball in his hands.
- 39:10Speaker 1: That's where he's at his best.
- 39:12Speaker 3: In the run game. You know, he can get into guys,
- 39:15Speaker 3: he can finish him. You know, he's not the tallest,
- 39:17Speaker 3: not the longest guy, so there are times he's not
- 39:19Speaker 3: able to quite do that. But you know, everything he
- 39:22Speaker 3: does separate easy. He can go get it, he can
- 39:26Speaker 3: climb the ladder and go up and get the ball,
- 39:27Speaker 3: and then really the run after catch stuff is what
- 39:30Speaker 3: makes him special. The challenge is then figuring out where
- 39:33Speaker 3: does he go in the draft. And I think when
- 39:35Speaker 3: you look around the league and you see most of
- 39:37Speaker 3: these top tight ends that have come on Day two
- 39:42Speaker 3: or even beyond that, teams are now saying, Okay, we
- 39:46Speaker 3: can find that other tight end. Maybe we don't get
- 39:48Speaker 3: the top guy, we can get a really really good
- 39:49Speaker 3: player who might end up being the top guy without
- 39:52Speaker 3: having to pay that premium. And I also think that
- 39:54Speaker 3: the Kyle Pitts thing, you know as Kyle Pitts his
- 39:57Speaker 3: talent as any tight end that I've ever evaluated, and
- 40:00Speaker 3: you know, it's just you're still dependent on the position
- 40:04Speaker 3: of the quarterback, so depending on what you can get
- 40:06Speaker 3: out of them. So that couple with the money difference,
- 40:11Speaker 3: the savings you get by taking a premier position in
- 40:13Speaker 3: the top ten, it's tough to place him to know
- 40:16Speaker 3: how high he's going to go.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Kyle Pitts was the fourth pick in the twenty twenty
- 40:21Speaker 2: one draft, meaning he was taken one spot before the
- 40:25Speaker 2: Bengals selected Jamar Chase. Pitts was a pro bowler as
- 40:28Speaker 2: a rookie when he topped one thousand receiving yards, but
- 40:31Speaker 2: he hasn't put up big numbers in the two seasons
- 40:34Speaker 2: since Atlanta's quarterback situation has obviously been a factor. Might
- 40:39Speaker 2: that make teams reluctant to use a high pick on Bours.
- 40:44Speaker 2: Only time will tell, but the highest selected tight end
- 40:47Speaker 2: in last year's draft was Dalton Kinkaid to Buffalo, and
- 40:50Speaker 2: that was with a twenty fifth overall pick. I'll be
- 40:55Speaker 2: at the combine for a couple of days next week
- 40:57Speaker 2: and we'll have some great draft content to come. That's
- 41:01Speaker 2: going to do it for this episode of the Bengals
