- 0:00Hour number two, Millery Condon, welcome back.
- 0:02It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:05We're living listening in the state of I We are grateful that
- 0:08you are. We'll take you until 2:00.
- 0:10Kentucky USCI. We're coming up at the bottom of
- 0:13the Arbor right now off to Chicago.
- 0:14He's David Kaplan, ESPN 1000. Of course, CAPS YouTube channel
- 0:19continues to get bigger and better.
- 0:21Hello, Capper Trenton Ken, thanks for coming on.
- 0:23How are you buddy? Trent and Ken, what's going on,
- 0:27boys? How are all of your awesome
- 0:29listeners? Oh, fantastic.
- 0:31I'll speak for all of them. The Bears pulled one out.
- 0:33Let's start there now having 1-6 of seven.
- 0:38So kind of a pretty good string string going on.
- 0:41Dabel did the Bears a huge favor by playing Russell Wilson, who's
- 0:46just God awful and has now been replaced.
- 0:48Both Dabel and and Wilson, but they pulled it out and you got
- 0:52to give him credit for that cap. I didn't think it was going to
- 0:54go their way. Caleb Williams made a couple of
- 0:57plays late. Here they are at six and three.
- 1:01Not sure what that means. Probably 10 to get into the
- 1:04playoffs, but you got to be happy with that spot.
- 1:07What was the consensus after they beat the Giants cap?
- 1:12That Caleb is that dude that we have a franchise quarterback who
- 1:15has ice water in his veins. You know, he had six passes
- 1:19dropped. They gave him credit for six
- 1:22drops. I mean, he threw a dime to
- 1:26Olamide Zacchaeus in the right side of the end zone as he cut
- 1:31across, and I mean right in the hands for a touchdown, dropped
- 1:37it. He threw another one to him,
- 1:40dropped it. He threw a third one to him,
- 1:42dropped it. DJ Moore, they didn't give him
- 1:45credit for a drop there because I'm not sure he would have been
- 1:49able to catch it and get his feet down.
- 1:51But same type of throw to Zacchaeus.
- 1:54He dropped it in the end zone. Roma, Dunze, a long game dropped
- 1:58it. What are we doing here?
- 2:00This stuff cannot happen and I know it's difficult.
- 2:03It's windy, it's cold. Got to catch the football man
- 2:06when the guy puts it in your hands.
- 2:07So on the game-winning touchdown, if you watch, first
- 2:12of all, Darnell Wright was just magnificent in pass protection
- 2:17and I'm run blocking. Phenomenal.
- 2:19He's going to be an all pro. Darnell Wright, that's his edge
- 2:24blocks Brian Burns. Caleb rolls left and Burden is
- 2:30wide open on a crosser. I mean wide open.
- 2:34And Caleb looks at him and just puts his head down and keeps
- 2:37running. Like Nope.
- 2:39Three times is a charm. Not throwing it to you.
- 2:44Last two weeks he is the top rated quarterback from Pro
- 2:47Football Focus. Really.
- 2:49We have our back and forth with PFF.
- 2:51I'm sure you do as well Cappy from time to time.
- 2:54Still couple weeks stretch here big time.
- 2:57Plays late in the game, situations.
- 3:00Look, I got a little impatient. I got frustrated at the
- 3:03beginning of the year. I'm sure I'm not alone amongst
- 3:06Bears fans amongst this, but it feels like for the first time in
- 3:10a long time, they have both the coach and the quarterback.
- 3:13And though even if it doesn't happen this year, even a playoff
- 3:16bid, the future looks a whole lot brighter than what we saw
- 3:20those first couple of weeks of the year.
- 3:22Yeah, completely agree. And I think I chastised you a
- 3:26couple weeks. Ago I said I need it from time
- 3:27to time. Just exactly.
- 3:30Just. We all do.
- 3:32Just chill. He's that dude.
- 3:35And I told this story on the radio.
- 3:37So Kevin Byard, who does his own show on my channel, he
- 3:41interviewed Rome yesterday. And so you can find it on the
- 3:45recap. It's to his shows called
- 3:47Intercepted. It's all over my social.
- 3:50And it's Kevin Byard interviewing a teammate.
- 3:52And this week's guest was Roma Doonsay and they're talking
- 3:56about Caleb, about the growth from a year ago to now.
- 4:00And then Kevin was telling me, he said I left the facility.
- 4:05Kevin gets to the facility like 6:30 in the morning.
- 4:09He said I get there, I eat my breakfast, I go through my
- 4:13whatever fan mail, I stretch, I get ready and then I have my
- 4:18meetings and then we go to practice.
- 4:20He said I finally leave at 5:00 to go home.
- 4:24He goes long day tiring, you know, your body's banged up.
- 4:27But he goes my job, it's what I got to do.
- 4:30And so he is locked in on his process.
- 4:33He said, I get home, I eat dinner and my wife said, hey, do
- 4:38you have whatever it was he needed?
- 4:40He's like, no, it's in my locker.
- 4:41She's like, you got to go get it.
- 4:43I need it tonight. So he said I live maybe 10
- 4:46minutes from the facility. He drives back to the facility
- 4:51and he said I pull into the player's parking lot and he said
- 4:55every car is gone except two. He said there are two cars.
- 4:59It's 7:00 at night, still parked in the lot.
- 5:04And he said, I look up and I see a light on and I'm like, you've
- 5:07got to be kidding me Because he said when he gets there at 6:30,
- 5:11these two guys are already there and they're already meeting.
- 5:15It's Caleb and Ben. He's like bro he said what a
- 5:20difference a year makes. Like last year was a blank show.
- 5:24This year he said he's getting challenged 24/7 by Ben and he is
- 5:31completely bought in to the concept of coach whatever you
- 5:36tell me I got to do, coach me hard.
- 5:38And then said, OK, you're up for being coached hard, you're going
- 5:41to be coached hard. And he said you can just see the
- 5:44growth in this guy. He's making good throws, he's
- 5:48making good decisions. Does that mean we couldn't get
- 5:51blown out in the game and Caleb look horrible?
- 5:54No, that's part of the deal. That is that goes on the whole
- 5:59the NFL is week to week league. Josh Allen was terrible last
- 6:04week. Terrible.
- 6:05And they get blown out by a really lousy Miami Dolphins
- 6:10team. Lousy.
- 6:12But in the end, they lose to a bad Miami team and maybe that
- 6:16will make them a better team going forward.
- 6:20Same thing with the Bears. I think they're going to beat
- 6:23Minnesota. Do I think they're going to walk
- 6:26in and win their, what, remaining eight games?
- 6:29No, probably, probably not. They're not good enough, but
- 6:31they got a good team and it's one at a time.
- 6:35Find a way to get to 7 and three, and if the Lions happen
- 6:38to lose to the Eagles, you're alone in first in the division.
- 6:42That's crazy. That's great.
- 6:44You're right, cap. You're 1000% right.
- 6:46Eight games left, six wins already in the bank.
- 6:49If you go 500 down the stretch, that's gets you to 10.
- 6:54That gets you in, doesn't it? Oh, I would think 10 and seven
- 6:58gets you in. I absolutely believe that.
- 7:01I told you guys at the start of the year, I'm not a huge fan of
- 7:04the Packers team. Right, I knew there was.
- 7:07I fandom, right? I'm talking about just my eval
- 7:11was Jordan Love's OK, I said. He's pretty good kid.
- 7:14Pretty good. Pretty good at 55,000,000.
- 7:17No, no, I would not have given him that massive contract.
- 7:22I would have tried to tag him for a year and then see how he
- 7:26does. They've decided to take the
- 7:29plunge for 200 and whatever $1,000,000 he's got coming.
- 7:33Good luck. I don't think they're a great
- 7:36team. And now they lost their starting
- 7:38center, Elton Jenkins, to a broken leg.
- 7:41He's gone maybe for the year, maybe he comes back and you
- 7:45know, January if they make a run, I'm not convinced That's a
- 7:49great. One who asked you about one of
- 7:53the newbies on the defense? So they got a bunch because of
- 7:55injuries. CJ Gardner Johnson, veteran
- 7:57press. Now he's only 27.
- 7:59He's been all over the league, New Orleans, Philly, Detroit,
- 8:02back to Philly again, Houston, and now in Chicago.
- 8:06A veteran presence, a guy that has been through the battles
- 8:08before. It just feels like that impact,
- 8:11that veteran kind of guy there. It's helped a ton.
- 8:13Even if it's play hasn't been incredible.
- 8:16Just having another veteran out there has gone a long way with
- 8:18this defense and still has. Still warts, but definitely
- 8:21seems to be improving. Yeah, look, CJ Gardner Johnson's
- 8:25a really talented cat, but there's a reason he's sitting at
- 8:29home. For two.
- 8:30Months, as he put it, trying to get somebody to give him a
- 8:33chance, and he wore out his welcome in Detroit, New Orleans
- 8:36and Philadelphia. And he has ability.
- 8:39So he's obviously warts to what he brings to a locker room.
- 8:45So he's the guy that George Mccaskey, if you'll remember,
- 8:48the Bears and the Saints got into it and they had had an
- 8:53issue with CJ Gardner, Johnson and Javon Wims, our old
- 8:56receiver. And then they were warned by
- 8:59Matt Nagy, do not engage with that guy.
- 9:02And of course, Anthony Miller gets into it with him, gets the
- 9:05second man and always gets now gets a 15 yard unsportsmanlike
- 9:10penalty for punching at CJ Gardner.
- 9:11Johnson, who clearly started it when you watch the film and
- 9:15George Mccask, he's like that kids a punk.
- 9:18And everyone's like, wow, George showing some fire and now he's
- 9:21on our team. But Ben Johnson vouched for him
- 9:24from Detroit. And so we have the culture in
- 9:28our building and in our room to now handle that.
- 9:31That's why they didn't draft Jaylen Carter and took Darnell
- 9:35right with the tray with the Eagles because they didn't have
- 9:38that. The head coach held nobody
- 9:40accountable. There was no alpha in the room.
- 9:43All of a sudden, Kevin Byard and Joe Tooney, Darnell, right?
- 9:49Like some of these dudes are alphas in that room, and that's
- 9:53where we've needed to get to. It's the biggest match up in my
- 9:56life because I grew up in North Iowa, I was one of the few Bears
- 10:00fans up there and my whole family, including my wife, are
- 10:02Vikings fans. This match up let it slip away
- 10:06Monday night to open up the season.
- 10:08What concerns you and what gives you excitement that in a
- 10:11divisional game the Bears can go there and get a road victory?
- 10:16I think they will get a road victory.
- 10:17I do. And I like JJ McCarthy.
- 10:20I think he's a good player and I think he's going to be better.
- 10:23But right now he's had some issues trying to be accurate
- 10:28with the football completion percentage is in the 50s.
- 10:30You can't live in the 50s in the National Football League and
- 10:34think you're going to be successful.
- 10:37They just lost Jonathan Granard for he's a week to week injury.
- 10:40So it does not sound like he's going to play against the Bears.
- 10:44No Granard. J JS got some questions.
- 10:48You would think, wow, big advantage.
- 10:50Chicago, their offensive lines just OK, big advantage.
- 10:53But if I told you that you're not going to have Tyler Gordon,
- 10:57you're not going to have Jaylen Johnson, you may not have TJ
- 11:01Edwards for another week. I don't know if he's going to be
- 11:04able to go and all of a sudden there's a double move on to Sean
- 11:08Wright or Nick McLeod or one of the backups playing for us.
- 11:12We're probably down. I told you those two, Terrell
- 11:15Smith got injured in pre season, done for the year.
- 11:18I mean, you're missing three of your top four corners.
- 11:21That's a problem. And all of a sudden there's a
- 11:23double move from either Jordan Addison or Justin Jefferson or
- 11:28there's no TJ Edwards. And guess what?
- 11:29TJ Hawkinson, dragon across the middle can catch and run.
- 11:34You give JJ McCarthy a little time, he may find some big time
- 11:39targets and that's how you lose a football game.
- 11:41But I do think the Bears will win.
- 11:42It can. Be a great game can't we to
- 11:44watch a cap Let's switch to baseball.
- 11:47It's award season. We're starting to see some of
- 11:49those obviously the gold gloves etcetera.
- 11:51But I'm more fascinated by what the team is going to look like
- 11:54next year. There are meetings going on
- 11:56right now in Las Vegas owners meetings in LV not sure you know
- 11:59what we can anticipate comes out of out of there used to be I
- 12:04mean the hot Stovly used to be a thing.
- 12:07Now it just lingers on and especially with 2027 and the
- 12:10potential of work stoppage looming.
- 12:13What are you hearing about the the Cubs?
- 12:15Hoyer says all the right things. Do you believe them as far as
- 12:18open for business or going to they're going to be active.
- 12:20What do you what do you anticipate gap.
- 12:23He has to say those things like I'm a Jed guy, you know that.
- 12:27I like him very much. But he can only spend what Tom
- 12:31Ricketts lets him spend. I mean, let's just be fair here.
- 12:35He can say, hey, guess what? We could sign Kyle Tucker and we
- 12:39could sign this guy and we could sign that guy.
- 12:42But if Tom does a green light to spend, then they're not going to
- 12:45be able to do it. So that's the problem.
- 12:48I don't know. I believe Jed would like to sign
- 12:50everybody, but Tom going to let him.
- 12:53And I was told by somebody who would know yesterday, they said,
- 12:59obviously the Dodgers don't want a salary cap.
- 13:01They want to be able to spend whatever they can spend.
- 13:04But they said there are three teams, let's see how good you
- 13:07are. There are three teams that are
- 13:11absolutely aligned with the smaller market teams that want
- 13:15the salary cap and the spending restrictions 3.
- 13:18So they're not. Talking about Oakland or Tampa
- 13:20or Whiteside, I'm talking about 3 big market teams that are
- 13:24aligning themselves with the teams that want spending
- 13:28restrictions. Can you tell me who those three
- 13:30teams are? None of them in the AFC East are
- 13:35the the American League East, AL East.
- 13:37None of them in the AL. East, yeah, there's, yeah,
- 13:39there's two of them in there. Are you kidding me?
- 13:42I'm not kidding you. The Yankees and the Red Sox.
- 13:45Bingo, you got it. They both want salary cap and
- 13:48spending restrictions. The Yankees?
- 13:52Yep. Hal Steinbrenner reportedly
- 13:55said. This is unsustainable.
- 13:58We can't spend at this level. Wow.
- 14:00Yeah, yeah. Comforted to nose, Not my Blue
- 14:04Jays. Are real.
- 14:05Yeah, well, but that's. Blue Jays, the Yankees, Red Sox
- 14:08and Cubs. And the Cubs, The other one.
- 14:11Oh my God. Which I think, look, I
- 14:14understand Marquis is not the cash cow they thought it would
- 14:18be. That's that's all well and fine.
- 14:22They own half a freaking Wrigleyville.
- 14:24And the Red Sox own on. Exactly.
- 14:26Look what the Red Sox own around Fenway Park.
- 14:28They've got it all. Correct.
- 14:31Yeah, you know what if. You can't compete.
- 14:34I'm not saying you got to spend 765,000,000 on soda or so, 700
- 14:40on Otani. I'm not saying that.
- 14:43What I am saying is if you're told that Framber Valdez wants
- 14:48to sign with you for 180 million, you're like, now we
- 14:50can't afford that. Well that's a joke then.
- 14:53Sell the team, get out. Yeah, can't afford not to do
- 14:55that. So give us a couple of names
- 14:57that you're hearing cap anything.
- 15:00Yeah, the Cubs are interested in Framber Valdez, but again,
- 15:04because of this impending labor stoppage after next season, a
- 15:08lot of teams are afraid to go long term.
- 15:11They want to know what the rules are.
- 15:13So I think you're going to be surprised.
- 15:15I think you'll see Kyle Tucker will get his money.
- 15:17I don't think it'll be from the Cubs, disappointing as that is,
- 15:21but I don't think you're going to see as many long term deals.
- 15:25You know, some reliever says, yeah, I'll do a three-year deal
- 15:28at 7 million a year, which is nothing in today's game.
- 15:32Yeah, those will get done. But the $400 million deals, I
- 15:36don't think you're going to see very many guys flirt with what
- 15:39they thought they were going to get.
- 15:41So some news that I don't know, it struck me.
- 15:45Kyle Hendricks. Retiring.
- 15:46Yeah, what a. Yeah, the professor.
- 15:49Chicago athlete I've ever dealt. With Is that right?
- 15:52Friends with yes. Like I'm super tight with Tommy
- 15:55Waddle, Olin Cruz and certain guys of guys who I wouldn't say
- 16:00I'm friends with but I'm friendly with and I've done a
- 16:04bunch of different shows with him.
- 16:06He's my favorite athlete I've ever covered because he is the
- 16:09most class human being I've ever dealt with.
- 16:13Quite the career, obviously, remember for 2016 and just being
- 16:16a part of that group and a guy, you know, just unassuming, easy
- 16:20to root for and and even there at the end, Ken and I never.
- 16:23Throw 100. No doesn't even throw 90 yet.
- 16:26We were rooting for him all the way up to the bitter end.
- 16:29He's I, I think forward and we still see what the 85 bears mean
- 16:33in Chicago. Is the same thing going to
- 16:35happen with that Cubs team that we're, well, hopefully there's
- 16:38not going to be a drought like there's been with the Bears, but
- 16:40that they are just going to be remembered in that kind of
- 16:42rarefied air. And wherever they go, there's
- 16:44going to be a free dinner, going to be a free drink waiting for
- 16:46that group. Yes I mean it was 108 years.
- 16:52You realize how ridiculous that sounds 108 like for the Bears,
- 16:56they won it in 63. They won it in 85 OK, been 22
- 17:01years. We did go to the Super Bowl in O
- 17:036 but lost to Peyton Manning and the Colts and we've had a record
- 17:08run of futility. But the Cubs, it was 108 years
- 17:13and they hadn't won. They didn't even play the World
- 17:15Series game at Wrigley in 71 seasons till they finally won
- 17:20Game 5 to get it back to Cleveland.
- 17:21So that will be remembered. And I literally have said this.
- 17:26If you told me the Cubs won the next 10 World Series, the Bears
- 17:31won the next 10 Super Bowls, the Blackhawks won the next 10
- 17:34Stanley Cups, and the Bulls won the next 10 NBA championships,
- 17:39you could add it all together. Nothing will ever compare to
- 17:41November 2nd, 2016. It's the coolest thing I could
- 17:45possibly ever cover. Yeah.
- 17:47Fascinating with that team. Sounds like Chris Bryant might
- 17:51be done. How did you see that latest on
- 17:52him? His back just not get allowed to
- 17:54play. No, he's a great, great person.
- 17:58It's just this market was too big for him.
- 18:01Did he like baseball cap? Yeah, I think he liked the game.
- 18:05I don't think he liked the business of the game.
- 18:08And I think he wants to be a dad and be a husband and be with his
- 18:11kids and which is awesome. Absolutely.
- 18:13This market was, he was not built for this market.
- 18:15He was built for Colorado, San Diego, places like that.
- 18:19He was not built for the grind and the insanity that is Wrigley
- 18:23everyday. David Kaplan, ESPN 1000 recap on

- 20:28Traditional Big 10 battle. Love it, absolutely love it.
- 20:32Can't wait to watch it. And Mark joins us.
- 20:33Mark Trenton, Ken, thank you for coming on.
- 20:35How are you? Mark Culkin, good to meet you.
- 20:38Pleasure. It's my pleasure and thanks for
- 20:39having me on. Looking forward to this game big
- 20:41time. Yeah, absolutely.
- 20:43Both teams. I think I watched the
- 20:45Northwestern USC game on Friday night and Northwestern game a
- 20:50game for the first half, I thought.
- 20:52And then USC pulled away a little bit.
- 20:55Convincing win in the end. It's the skill guys that just
- 20:59jump off my television set when I watch USC, both the receivers,
- 21:03obviously King Miller running the football and he's got he's
- 21:06not alone. My Ave. is having a terrific
- 21:09year. Phil Parker's a really good
- 21:11defensive coordinator, as I'm sure you know, but he's got his
- 21:14work cut out because this, this offense for USC is absolutely
- 21:17loaded. Yeah, US CS often definitely
- 21:21have an opportunity or, you know, they they prevent
- 21:24challenges. They can be explosive.
- 21:25But that's without a doubt. The other day, USC sports
- 21:29information director Katie Ryan, she she blasted a post on X that
- 21:34USC is the only team in the country putting up 300 yards
- 21:37through the air and 200 yards on the ground.
- 21:40And just to kind of put that into context, the last time USC
- 21:44was doing something like that, that was back in 2005, and
- 21:47that's when you had Matt Leonard and Reggie Bush and Wendell
- 21:50White and Jarrett lining up on the opposite side of the ball.
- 21:54Ironically enough, this year for USC, they're doing it like
- 21:57MacGyver. Yes, Jaden Maiava has been a
- 22:00quarterback all year, but you brought up King Miller's name,
- 22:03the running back. He was actually like 4th on the
- 22:06depth chart, and he's a preferred walk on.
- 22:09So he's doing all this when US CS 1st 2 running backs went
- 22:13down, their third running back has been kind of dealing with
- 22:15turf toes throughout the season. And then you go up to very
- 22:18offensive line, 5 different starting offensive lines
- 22:22throughout the season so far, I think 13 different combinations
- 22:25all together during the games. So.
- 22:29But in my opinion, this is Lincoln Riley's best coaching
- 22:33job since he's been at USA just because of the pieces he has
- 22:37available to him. But by all means, Jacoby Lane,
- 22:40Makai Lemon on the outside, they are they cause problems.
- 22:45I mean, Makai Lemon, he gets more yards after the catch than
- 22:48he does at the point of the catch.
- 22:50And Jacoby Lane, if you throw it in his area with his jump
- 22:54radius, he just throws out that Velcro hand if he makes these
- 22:57incredible catches. So I'm looking forward to it.
- 23:00You mentioned Phil Parker, outstanding deep into
- 23:02coordinator. For me, that's what this game
- 23:05really comes down to, his X's and O's on defense versus
- 23:08Lincoln. Riley's X's and O's on offense.
- 23:10I couldn't agree. With you more, you know, there's
- 23:12a plenty of Hawkeye fans that have the hope all right, go out
- 23:15there to USC physically line up and and play just a turf battle
- 23:19against this Trojan team kind of pull them into the slop, if you
- 23:22will. Does sound like there's going to
- 23:23be rain. Maybe that would help out with
- 23:25the slop. We'll get to that in a moment.
- 23:27But what I keep going back to and I know it's just one game
- 23:30out of nine so far for USC. That performance against
- 23:33Michigan that I'm sure went in with the same blueprint and it
- 23:35didn't work. USC physically manhandled
- 23:38Michigan in that football game. I guess this isn't your older
- 23:41brother's USC team there. There's some toughness, it looks
- 23:44like to this group, Mark. Yeah, there's, there's a
- 23:48misconception out there that this team doesn't like to play a
- 23:51physical brand of football. They do.
- 23:53They they, they, they can go toe to toe with teams like Michigan
- 23:58and, you know, they proved it. They also proved that they can
- 24:01go out to places like Illinois and and, and, and not look that
- 24:04good on the deep side of the ball.
- 24:07And then, you know, the game that really stands out is what
- 24:10happened out in South Bend against Notre Dame.
- 24:14But again, USC at home, it's a different animal, Iowa on the
- 24:18road, different animal than what they are in in Kinnock Stadium.
- 24:22What I saw from Iowa that you're in it causes me some concern.
- 24:26And I get the games were in Iowa City, but you held Oregon and
- 24:29Indiana both below their their seasonal averages.
- 24:33Can they do that on the road and can they do that one week after
- 24:36suffering that gut punch law to Oregon last week?
- 24:40That's a really good question. Mark Kulkin joining us locked on
- 24:43USC trek since I knew you were coming on been anxious to ask
- 24:47you this because and you mentioned the Illinois game and
- 24:49if memory serves, that was an 11 AM central time kick.
- 24:53My question my question to you because Trent and I talk about
- 24:56it all the time when we're trying to find an edge when it
- 24:58comes to betting or or or picking a team in our head to
- 25:01head contest teams from former PAC 12 teams coming east and
- 25:06body clock is you know an 11:00 central 9:00 on their body
- 25:11clock. Is that a big factor or have a
- 25:14former PAC 12 school? Bob put it this way, PAC Pacific
- 25:17Time zone schools, have they figured out how to, you know, to
- 25:21get around that the yes kick off is 9 O clock their body clock
- 25:25time. Is that a big, big issue or does
- 25:27that get overblown by by media perhaps?
- 25:31I I think that gets overblown. Yeah, I know the coaches will
- 25:34bring it up on occasion, talking about the distance, the travel.
- 25:39I, I, I can't get on board with that.
- 25:41These guys are, look, these are athletes in the prime of their
- 25:45lives. They're it's not like they're
- 25:47flying Spirit Airlines and they're all sitting in the
- 25:49middle seat. Yeah, to me, I think it's
- 25:53overblown. It's just a matter of coming
- 25:56out, being prepared and just kind of dealing with a new, you
- 26:00know, a new environment. One of the things that UFC fans
- 26:04constantly bring up is how Lincoln Riley doesn't bring his
- 26:08team out there a day ahead of time to kind of get more
- 26:11acclimated, you know, do a walkthrough.
- 26:14How much that plays into it, I really don't know.
- 26:16But as as far as, you know, the media leaning into it, I think
- 26:20it's overblown. I really do.
- 26:22Mark mentioned the weather looks like it's going to be a rainy
- 26:24one now, rainy and 65, a little bit different than rainy and 32
- 26:28as I would dealt with a week ago.
- 26:30What can you tell us about the weather and how impactful will
- 26:33it be? Certainly to that passing game,
- 26:35it's getting the ball out quick and into Lemon in space, doing
- 26:38those kind of things. But if it is a range wrench kind
- 26:41of game, how much maybe does that close the gap a little bit
- 26:44for Iowa defensively and maybe slowing down the USC offense?
- 26:48I mean, I think it'll play a small role.
- 26:51I don't think it'll be a significant role.
- 26:52You know, US CS already dealt with the rain a couple times
- 26:55this year. You know, they had that whole
- 26:56weather delay at Purdue. So again, I don't think it'll
- 27:01play a big role. Will ball security play a big
- 27:04role? Absolutely, absolutely.
- 27:07One of the improvements that Jayden, I should say the USC
- 27:09quarterback position because last year was a combination of
- 27:13Miller Moss and Jayden Maiaba. Last year I think they threw
- 27:16combined 15 interceptions. So far this season, Dayton has
- 27:20only found 5 interceptions. With that being said, he's found
- 27:24an interception in the last five games in a row.
- 27:28So that does bother me because I know how good of a deep the
- 27:31coordinator Phil Parker is. And I know he's going to know
- 27:35you guys are going to bring your best team out here and do what
- 27:37you can to to ruin UFC's chance to to continue on the playoff
- 27:40Rd. I know last last week, you guys
- 27:43you know, possibly have been eliminated.
- 27:45I know mathematically you're still alive, but this is this is
- 27:49a playoff game and USC hopefully recognizes that they're playing
- 27:52at home because it sets up a huge, huge, huge matchup next
- 27:57week in Eugene, OR. No kidding that that's for
- 27:59certain. So along those lines about I
- 28:03want to ask you a couple of things because we don't talk to
- 28:05the former PAC 12 and I love the PAC 12.
- 28:07I wish it was still a part of existence.
- 28:09I really do not that we don't want you in the in the big 10.
- 28:12It's good too. But I just love that conference,
- 28:14always have. Understood.
- 28:15And I'm in my in my mid 60s, past my mid 60s and it's always.
- 28:20The Rose Bowl, too. There you go.
- 28:21Hell yeah. So two-part question, what's the
- 28:26Colosseum like? Because I've never been bit of
- 28:27the Rose Bowl, never made it to the Colosseum.
- 28:29What's it like for a fan to go out there?
- 28:31And then how much does UCLAUSC mean?
- 28:35It's the greatest uniform game of the entire season.
- 28:37No one will ever convince me otherwise of that.
- 28:40When UCLA wears their powder Blues and you guys do what you
- 28:43do, it's phenomenal. On TV, it looks great.
- 28:46So what's the Colosseum like and what does the rivalry UCLAUSC
- 28:50mean to that area? Sure.
- 28:53So to your first question, the Colosseum when it is filled and
- 28:57you know they reduced capacity when they did the redesign and
- 29:00now seats 77 five when it is filled up, it is loud.
- 29:05It's it's got that energy, it's got that vibe.
- 29:09It's it can be a difficult place to play if you're a visitor.
- 29:13With that said, general tend to be, you know, slow to arrive
- 29:19early to leave, but this type of game and can you kind of touched
- 29:24on a little bit, you know, it's one of those helmet types of
- 29:28games, those uniform types of games.
- 29:29I wouldn't be opposed if Iowa wore their home units at the
- 29:33Coliseum. It's a fun place when when the
- 29:38electricity is inside that stadium and Iowa travels well.
- 29:42You guys have a great fan base. So I anticipate it being being
- 29:46raucous. I'm looking forward to it big
- 29:48time now as far as USCUCLI, it it's a rivalry that, you know,
- 29:56the schools are separated by 12 miles.
- 29:59It I I love that they both wear their home, their home jerseys
- 30:03as well. That you that you pointed out.
- 30:04I wish that happened more across the country.
- 30:08What this rivalry has been missing, I'd say for the last 10
- 30:12years or so. And on any given Saturday, you
- 30:15know, doesn't matter. You show up for this game, but
- 30:19UCLA has been literally doing less than what USC has been
- 30:24doing in football. There was a time where USC and
- 30:27UCLA competed for the same recruit.
- 30:30It that doesn't really happen and I know a lot of it has to do
- 30:33with NIL and just the whole just the way college football, the
- 30:37landscape has been laid out recently.
- 30:41But that's that's what's missing is USC and UCLA being one of
- 30:44those teams are constantly in the top 15, you know, in the
- 30:47country where it generates that that national attention right
- 30:52now, it it grabs the attention of of Los Angeles and and cut in
- 30:55California. So that's what's been missing
- 30:57from this rivalry. And you know, USC, depending on
- 31:01who you ask as a fan, the number one rivalry is USC versus Notre
- 31:05Dame, then UCLA. Some people might even flip
- 31:08Stanford in there just because of if you want to go back to the
- 31:11whole John McKay era. Yeah, keep playing Notre Dame,
- 31:16USC. That has to happen. 100% and
- 31:20trust me, if that does not happen, I will be the I will be
- 31:24banging the drum the loudest. Trust on that.
- 31:26Hey, Mark, one final thing from me.
- 31:29Iowan controversy apparently lately has been a thing against
- 31:32you Left Coast schools because a clip from three years ago is
- 31:35making the rounds across social media when Kirk Ferris was
- 31:38talking about looks like they're going to actually invest in
- 31:42defense. You know, whatever, to
- 31:43paraphrase what he said over there, is this actually
- 31:45something inside the USC locker room?
- 31:47Is this something that that Lincoln's going to use as
- 31:50motivation because they did fire their defensive staff and they
- 31:54did do something about their defense?
- 31:56What is the USC angle I guess on this one?
- 32:00So I don't know if if Lincoln Riley will put it on the, you
- 32:04know, on the chalkboard. I think he'll use it as
- 32:06motivation to kind of just remind Kirk friends, you know,
- 32:09how good of a coach he can be. And now he's still developing as
- 32:12a head coach. And you brought up what what
- 32:15what Coach Friends said three years ago, which was kind of
- 32:19just out of left field, sort of. Thing.
- 32:22And so when I showed up to US CS first Big 10 Media Day, I asked
- 32:26coach friends about it when he was up there on the dais.
- 32:29And then this past Big 10 Media day, I brought it up again.
- 32:34I said, hey, did you notice any improvement?
- 32:37So it's, it's out there. It's in the cyber world ether.
- 32:40I I don't think it's going to play a huge role.
- 32:42As I said, I think Lincoln Riley might see how creative he can
- 32:46be. He might, you know, take a
- 32:47little personally as far as having to go against Phil
- 32:50Parker. But yeah, I, I wouldn't be
- 32:52surprised if Coach Riley wants to, you know, throw up 3540
- 32:56points. Will he get there?
- 32:58I don't know. Like I said, you guys bring out
- 33:00really solid defense. It's physical.
- 33:03They like to get punched in the mouth and they like to see if
- 33:04someone's willing to punch them back.
- 33:07Mark Culkin locked on USC. Mark, great to get to, to know
- 33:10you. Appreciate you coming on and
- 33:12we'll do it again. I appreciate it.
- 33:14Enjoy the game on Saturday. Thank you, Mark Culkin.
- 33:17Appreciate you having me on, Thanks.
- 33:18Again, Yeah, good to talk to you, Mark Culkin, as we check in
- 33:21on USC. And a little bit with Mark and
- 33:23myself coming up on Friday is locked on Hawkeyes.
- 33:26We'll have a crossover as we'll dive a little bit deeper into
- 33:29the match up. And I know.
- 33:31Help out with the pronunciations.
- 33:33That's on the To Do List already.
- 33:36It happens with parents every every new coach, every new city,
- 33:39every new team. Every time.
- 33:40And there's still national people that do it, you know?
- 33:42It's there was one this year on. Yeah, that is what it is.
- 33:47I'm sure it doesn't bother him. Nothing bothers the fan base
- 33:49more. It does.
- 33:52OK, we'll head to break. Here's what we're going to do.
- 33:54Before we do that, however, you want to go to Xavier in Iowa

- 34:45I don't feel good about it. Trent, I don't either.
- 34:47I don't either, but. Felt good about better about it

- 34:51ticket item there, Wild Rose Jefferson 11 to 1, the meet and

- 35:02of the day, their next Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports
- 35:04Radio Network. I'm Millery Condon, Welcome
- 35:07back. Our final segment here on a
- 35:09Wednesday. Thanks to Mark Culkin, David
- 35:11Kaplan, Mitch Holtis, who joined us early in the program.
- 35:16And our number one, you can listen to the podcast.
- 35:18It'll be available both hours of the podcast will be up and there
- 35:23when it suits your schedule. All right.
- 35:25Did the Northern Lights get you last night?
- 35:27Did you go out of the day? I've seen them a million times,
- 35:29yeah. Yeah, you'd probably see him a
- 35:31little more often. That was his vibrant.
- 35:33So Jack finished up basketball last night.
- 35:35It was like 8:00, like my wife said.
- 35:38Let's take a peek. Yeah.
- 35:40So we headed South out of town because we're.
- 35:41You went. Out of town too much?
- 35:43Well, because we're already at the Rec Plex, which is on the
- 35:45way out of town, so just went down to the coming exit.
- 35:48I've never seen anything like that.
- 35:50It was above us, so close, so vibrant, without a, without a
- 35:54camera, right where it, Yeah, pops on that just by the naked
- 35:58eye. I've never seen anything.
- 35:59And it's back tonight. It is.
- 36:02I've been told we're we're we're watching them.
- 36:04Are you? Yeah, cuz I'm apparently my wife
- 36:06wasn't aware that last night that they were.
- 36:08It's one of those things that in the I don't care, you know what,
- 36:11I if I saw the pictures, but I didn't see it myself.
- 36:14Yeah, but you know what for the? Kids.
- 36:15Yes, Jack was mesmerized. Yeah, by it.
- 36:19So what? So what time is it?
- 36:20Seemingly it was about 8:39 clock somewhere now.
- 36:22Probably 830. Yeah, yeah.
- 36:25I hope she'll be asleep and she'll forget.
- 36:28Cuz you got matching. I've got matching tonight.
- 36:31Trent, you betting matching tonight?
- 36:33I am. Give me the RedHawks.
- 36:34I'm grabbing Miami of Ohio, plus the four and a half tonight
- 36:36against Toledo. It's a standard fate of Toledo
- 36:39in a favorite role. Yeah, Miami of Ohio.
- 36:40A couple of edges in the game. Specialty is probably the
- 36:42biggest one. I like Miami of Ohio plus the
- 36:45four and a half and two college basketball games.
- 36:47Gonna grab North Texas. I think this is a wrong team
- 36:49favorite. Now you're only getting 2 1/2
- 36:51out of Oregon State, but I'll do that with North Texas team I
- 36:53think is going to be pretty good this year in the American.
- 36:56And finally. Got to take Hawaii. 41 If you
- 37:00miss the beginning of the show, you can go back and get a deep
- 37:03dive into things as they face off against Mississippi Valley
- 37:06State. No, here's a chance to fade.
- 37:08Steve Alford. Give me the Salukis plus 11 1/2
- 37:11out in Reno tonight. Southern Illinois plus 11 1/2
- 37:14all. Right.
- 37:15Good stuff. You're seeing it better.
- 37:17You're the college hoops better of a slow start for you.
- 37:20Better than those first 2-3 days.
- 37:22Good God that was awful. Not much better.
- 37:24We're a little bit better, but I don't know, I this has normally
- 37:28been the sport that is by far figuring out the situational
- 37:33spots. But that's college football too.
- 37:34You know, I'm very much a situational spot guy.
- 37:36Fade A-Team off a big wit. It hasn't hit at the same kind
- 37:40of level these last couple of seasons.
- 37:42Matching tonight. Match.
- 37:44It'll get us back on the three. Games.
- 37:46It's at 6:00. CBS Sports has one.
- 37:49One's on EU and one's on the Deuce I think.
- 37:52Maybe bouncing around? Yeah, 'cause the basketball
- 37:53slate, the college basketball slate wasn't the best.
- 37:56I didn't. There's one game.
- 37:57Minnesota, Missouri. That's that's the network.
- 38:02No, Maybe watch some of Nico's squad.
- 38:04Yeah, at least for at least for a little bit.
- 38:06Half time I'm action. And then late night Hawaii.
- 38:09No, no, no. Delta Devils plus 41 and a.
- 38:14Half I, I'm gonna, I'm gonna check the box score tomorrow.
- 38:16Absolutely AM. Thanks for being with us.
- 38:18We'll be back tomorrow. Trent and I are here every
- 38:20Monday through Friday, noon to two, talking sports with you on
- 38:23the Iowa Sports Radio Network. Have a good rest of your day off
- 38:27the bench coming up next.
