- 0:0930, 1970, the New York Mets faced the San Francisco
- 0:13Giants in an afternoon game at Candlestick Park.
- 0:15The Mets, managed by Gil Hodges, were the reigning
- 0:19world champions, having stunned the baseball
- 0:21world as the Amazing Mets in 1969. The Giants,
- 0:24managed by Clyde King, had achieved a 90 -win
- 0:27season in 1969, although it wasn't enough to
- 0:29secure the NL West division title against the
- 0:31Braves. In this game, the Mets sent 23 -year
- 0:34-old Nolan Ryan to the mound to face the Giants'
- 0:36Mike McCormick. This audio recording is from
- 0:39the radio broadcast featuring announcers Lindsey
- 0:41Nelson, Ralph Kiner, and Bob Murphy. The Mets
- 1:26will be back at Shea Stadium in New York for

- 1:36games, followed by the Giants and then the Montreal

- 1:43here at Candlestick Park. Starting pitchers for

- 4:28of nine wins and nine losses. Last year in 12
- 4:30ballgames played, the Mets won eight. The Giants
- 4:33won four. And here at Candlestick, they split
- 4:36the six games played, three and three. Now Willie
- 4:40Mays, who is not playing in the ballgame, the
- 4:43captain of the Giants, goes back to the dugout.
- 4:45Gil Hodges back to the Mets dugout on the third
- 4:49base side, and the umpires are taking their station.
- 4:52After this ballgame, the Mets move on down to
- 4:54San Diego, and in tomorrow night's ballgame at
- 4:581025, it'll be Tom Seaver going for his fifth
- 5:01win. He has lost none. Tom has a record of 14
- 5:06consecutive wins in National League play dating
- 5:08back to last year. And he'll be imposed by the
- 5:12only pitcher to beat the Mets last year for San
- 5:14Diego, Al Santorini. Now the Giants are taking
- 5:18the field. Wind blowing out toward right. More
- 5:23wind today than we had yesterday. Where we saw
- 5:27four home runs in the ballgame, two by each side.
- 5:30Field dimensions, 335 down the left field line,
- 5:33365 in left center, 410 in center field, 375
- 5:36in right center, and 330 down the right field
- 5:39line. No clouds at all, good sunshiny day, and
- 5:44the Mets in the final game of their three -game
- 5:46series with the Giants. And now our national
- 5:48anthem. San Francisco, California. All the Mets
- 7:15need a victory here today, the last day of April,
- 7:18to come up with the most wins they've ever had
- 7:22in a month of April. And it's going to be up
- 7:24to Nolan Ryan. He'll be opposed by left -hander
- 7:27Mike McCormick. This broadcast comes to you through

- 7:48a record of 9 -9 for the month of April and the
- 7:52Giants with a record of 10 -11. Mets return to
- 7:55play against the Dodgers and the Giants in their
- 7:57next homestand. They start off with the Dodgers
- 8:00playing night games on May 5th, 6th, and 7th,
- 8:04Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday night. They
- 8:06have a night game with the Giants on the 8th
- 8:09of May, Friday night. a single -day game on Saturday
- 8:12afternoon, and on the 10th, Mother's Day, the
- 8:15Mets have a single game with the Giants. Monday
- 8:19night after Mother's Day, the 11th, will be a
- 8:21night game with Montreal, and then on the 12th,
- 8:24the final game of the next homestand, a day game
- 8:27with Montreal. Just got word that the temperature
- 8:30in Montreal today is up around 80. I'd like to
- 8:34have that when the Mets return home on May the
- 8:375th. Ballpark here at Candlestick in San Francisco
- 8:44is located just near Hunter's Point. And as we
- 8:47look down the right field line, see some big
- 8:49aircraft carriers that are over in the shipyard.
- 8:53And it's one of those kind of days here in San
- 8:55Francisco that they write songs about. Now the
- 8:59throw goes down to second base by the catcher,
- 9:01and the ball game is about to get underway. And
- 9:03here for the play -by -play, Lindsey Nelson.
- 9:07Thank you very much, Ralph Cannon. Hello again,
- 9:09everybody. Mike McCormick is on the mound. He
- 9:11came to the major leagues with the New York Giants.
- 9:14He was with the San Francisco Giants when they
- 9:17first came here in 58. Was traded away and then
- 9:20came back. Tommy Agee is up. He has a 10 -game
- 9:23hitting streak going. He appeared as a pinch
- 9:25hitter yesterday and delivered. Here's the first
- 9:27pitch of the day, curveball, and it's in for
- 9:29a called strike. McCormick has a record of one
- 9:32win and one loss. He is a former Cy Young Award
- 9:35winner. Waiting on deck for the Mets is Bud Harrelson.
- 9:40Wind rippling the flag out toward right field
- 9:43here at Candlestick. Artificial surface, it's
- 9:46AstroTurf all around. Makes a little difference
- 9:49in the manner in which the game is played. Here's
- 9:52a swing and a drive, foul back of third. Two
- 9:54strike count, now to Agee. Manager Gil Hodges
- 9:57has Cleon Jones, Tommy Agee, and Joe Foy all
- 10:00back in the lineup here this afternoon. After
- 10:04having had them out of the starting lineup for
- 10:06three consecutive games. McCormick takes a sign
- 10:12from Giant catcher Dick Deets. Taking a long
- 10:19look before he gets it. Now he has it. Two strike
- 10:22pitches high for a ball. It's one and two. McCormick
- 10:27last year won 11 games for the Giants and he
- 10:29lost nine. Against the Mets last year, he won
- 10:32none and lost two. But his lifetime record against
- 10:35New York is six wins and four losses. Here's
- 10:39a pitch that's hit in the air to short right
- 10:41field, and second baseman Ron Hunt goes out,
- 10:43but he's called off by right fielder Ken Henderson,
- 10:46who puts it away. One away, and now Bud Harrelson,
- 10:51who'll be batting right against the left hand
- 10:52of McCormick. Harrelson has hit safely in his
- 10:54last four games. He's hit safely in 10 of his
- 10:57last 11, and he's hit safely in 16 of 18 games
- 11:00the Mets have played this year. Harrelson from
- 11:03Hayward, California, which is in the greater
- 11:05San Francisco area. McCormick's pitch. High and
- 11:10away for a ball. McCormick defeated the Montreal
- 11:14Expos 11 -1 in his last start on April 26th here
- 11:17at San Francisco, and he had a complete game.
- 11:21Here's a swing and a high pop to the right side.
- 11:23Hunt again calls, but McCovey is retreating.
- 11:26Hunt calls this time and makes the play. Two
- 11:31men out. Cleon Jones coming up now. Cleon appeared
- 11:36as a pinch hitter yesterday and struck out. His
- 11:38batting average is down to .224. He's batted
- 11:42in eight runs. He's been in a batting slump.
- 11:45Gil Hodges is hopeful that the rest of a few
- 11:47days will have done him good. Mike McCormick
- 11:53lost to the Cincinnati Reds on April 12th, 6
- 11:55-5 here at San Francisco. Jones, a right -hand
- 12:04batter. Two men out, nobody on base, no score.
- 12:06Here's the pitch to Cleon Jones, and it's inside
- 12:09for a ball. The coach at third for the Mets is
- 12:12Eddie Yost, and on the line is down at first,
- 12:15Yogi Berra. 1 -0 delivery. And it's in there
- 12:24for a called strike. 1 -1. There's a breaking
- 12:37pitch that's high. McCormick came up with the
- 12:40New York Giants in 1956. He was with them 56
- 12:44and 57. The last two years the Giants were in
- 12:46New York. Then put in five years. with a giant
- 12:51cheer before being traded away to Baltimore.
- 12:55The breaking pitch in for a called strike. Slow
- 12:57curveball. It's 2 -2 to Cleon Jones. Glenn Dunnan's
- 13:01on deck. Then McCormick went from Baltimore to
- 13:03Washington and from Washington back to San Francisco,
- 13:06back here for the 67 season. Here's a pitch.
- 13:12High and away. And in that 67 season, he won
- 13:1622 games and lost 10. Chuck Feeney, who was with
- 13:20the Giants and now the president of the National
- 13:22League, claims that as one of his great deals.
- 13:25Well, it certainly paid off for him because McCormick
- 13:29won the Cy Young Award that year. Here's a breaking
- 13:32pitch that's outside and it's a walk to Cleon.
- 13:34The Mets pick up their first baserunner. Jones
- 13:38is on it first and Don Clendenin is coming up.
- 13:41Clendenin is hitting .237, but he has three home
- 13:44runs and leads the Mets and runs that at end
- 13:46with 11. He had a home run here yesterday that
- 13:49was just way back up into the seats, back there
- 13:52on the left. We'll be on the air from San Diego
- 14:01tomorrow night, 10 .25 p .m. New York time. This
- 14:06pitch is in for a called strike. Andy Olsen is
- 14:09the umpire behind the plate. Ken Burkhardt is
- 14:11at first. He's the crew chief. Ed Sudol at second,
- 14:14and Lee Weier is around at third. Pitch to Glenn
- 14:22Dunnan. Swung on and landed in the left field
- 14:24for a base hit. Out and left. Bob Taylor comes
- 14:27up with a return to Jones. Holds at second. Cleon
- 14:30at second and Glenn Dunnan on at first with a
- 14:33line shot that skidded across the carpet out
- 14:36and left. Now Ron Swoboda is coming up. He's
- 14:41playing right field today. He has a batting average
- 14:43of .250. He's had four runs batted in. Swoboda,
- 14:47a right -hand batter. McCormick now checks the
- 15:03runners at first and second, and here's a breaking
- 15:05pitch. It's in there for a call strike to Swoboda,
- 15:07and Joe Foy is on deck. Again, McCormick takes
- 15:21the sign. And the pitch. Low for a ball. Mike
- 15:36McCormick is 31 years of age. And his lifetime
- 15:39major league pitching record is 130 wins and
- 15:43125 losses. Med runners lead at first and second.
- 15:55This is a 1 -1 pitch. Svoboda fouls it off. And
- 16:00it's one and two. A lot of ladies at the ballpark
- 16:04today. There was a fashion show held here this
- 16:09morning starting at 10 .30. Attended by some
- 16:129 ,000 ladies. Mrs. Jackie Hunt, the wife of
- 16:16Giant second baseman Ron Hunt, provided the models,
- 16:21who were mostly baseball wives. They used the
- 16:26tops of the two dugouts. To show off the fashions.
- 16:33The 1 -2 pitch. And it is low for a ball. 2 -2.
- 16:40Teron Svoboda. Jones at second. Clendenin at
- 16:49first. This will be a 2 -2 delivery. Swung on
- 17:03and popped a foul back of the plate and moving
- 17:06over is Dietz and McCovey. And it falls quickly
- 17:09as Dietz couldn't find it and moved late. McCovey
- 17:13was moving all the way. I simply couldn't get
- 17:15to it. The ball hit actually on the astroturf
- 17:18over in front of the giant dugout to the right
- 17:20side of the plate. As Dietz got rid of his mask
- 17:23and looked up, he was shading his eyes trying
- 17:25to find the ball. Couldn't find it. McCovey was
- 17:28coming all the while, but by the time Dietz discovered
- 17:30where it was and started, he couldn't get there
- 17:32either. So it's simply a foul ball out of play
- 17:35and no error charged. Two and two, the count
- 17:38to Svoboda. There are two men out. No score.
- 17:53McCormick takes the sign from Dietz. And that
- 17:56runners lead at first and second. Here's the
- 18:012 -2 pitch. Breaks low and inside. It's out full
- 18:04at 3 -2 now to Svoboda, which means that the
- 18:07runners at first and second will be off and winging
- 18:09on the pitch. Joe Foy is on deck. Runners go.
- 18:30Payoff pitch. Curveball low. The bases are loaded.
- 18:33And Svoboda checks. That's the first. And Steve
- 18:38is arguing with Andy Olsen, the umpire, about
- 18:42the possibility of Svoboda having swung at the
- 18:44pitch. And McCormick walks all the way in near
- 18:46the plate to inquire of Olsen about the same
- 18:49thing. It was a curveball low out of the strike
- 18:52zone. And Svoboda started the swing and checked
- 18:54off. So the bases are loaded and Joe Poi is up.
- 19:02Lindsey, you have to be awfully strong to start
- 19:04a swing like Ron did and stop it as fast as he
- 19:07did. Just in the nick of time. Boyd hitting 169.
- 19:12He has one home run and six runs batted in. Right
- 19:14-hand batter with a closed stance. They're loaded
- 19:19up. McCormick works straight away, and the pitch
- 19:21breaks low and inside for a ball. Al Weiss is
- 19:23on deck now. Weiss bats number seven in this
- 19:26batting order of the New York Mets. We're going
- 19:30to get a little action down in the giant bullpen
- 19:32area now. Here in the very first inning as the
- 19:34Mets are threatening. 1 -0, they count to four.
- 19:39Mets in a spot where a base hit could do them
- 19:41a lot of good. Here's a pitch. Swung on and landed
- 19:43to center for a base hit. Coming on is Jones.
- 19:46He scores. Here comes Sundin into the plate.
- 19:49He scores. And Svoboda holds the second. Paws
- 19:52on it for a single to center. A line shot. Two
- 19:55runs batted in. The Mets lead 2 -0. Coming up.
- 20:08Frank Lieberger is warming up. Frank Lieberger
- 20:12is warming up in the giant bullpen. Here's at
- 20:27first and second two men out the Mets to the
- 20:29Giants nothing. Why is this hitting two twenty
- 20:34two and he's had three runs batted in. Grammix
- 20:38pitch in there for a call strike to White. I
- 20:43just had two doubles this year. It for fifty
- 20:46five in the World Series to leave the Mets at
- 20:49bat including a home run in the deciding the
- 20:52final game the fifth game. That's a check swing
- 20:59foul ball to the right side. Actually, he wasn't
- 21:01swinging. He was checking back, and it clicked
- 21:03off the bat right down off the top of the plate.
- 21:06Count of two strikes to Weiss. Duffy Dyer is
- 21:10on deck. The Mets expect Jerry Grody to rejoin
- 21:14them tonight in San Diego. Grody has been hospitalized
- 21:18in Los Angeles since the Mets' arrival there
- 21:20last weekend. So he'll be rejoining the Mets.
- 21:27In San Diego. Runners lead at first and second.
- 21:36Here's a pitch low and away for a ball. It's
- 21:38one and two. Must be in San Diego Friday night,
- 21:43Saturday afternoon and a Sunday doubleheader.
- 21:48Monday will be a travel day as the Mets then
- 21:50fly back to New York on Monday. Opening up Tuesday
- 21:53night against the Dodgers in the first night
- 21:55game of the year at Shea Stadium. One -two pitch.
- 21:58Swung on it. Underground foul. Back of third.
- 22:00Down past Eddie Yost. Ricochets on down into
- 22:04the Met bullpen where it's retrieved by Ron Taylor.
- 22:08Frank Reberger continues to throw in the giant
- 22:11bullpen. The Mets 2, the Giants nothing. Right
- 22:18before last year, the Mets got five runs in the
- 22:20top half of the first inning. The big hit there
- 22:22was a grand slam homer by Dave Marshall. Mets
- 22:25won that game 5 -2. Lost yesterday 8 -6. Swing
- 22:30and a miss. McCormick strikes out wide. And the
- 22:33side is retired. It is two runs on two hits and
- 22:38two walks, no errors, and two lefts. In the middle
- 22:41of the first inning, the score is the Mets 2
- 22:43and the Giants nothing. That could be you this
- 23:02summer taking a friend for a local Phoenix flight.

- 23:45Nolan Ryan is the pitcher for the New York Mets.
- 23:54He had won one and lost one, although he's allowed
- 23:57only three. He hits in his last two games. Last
- 24:01year, he won none, lost none against the Giants.
- 24:03His lifetime record against San Francisco is
- 24:05one win and no losses. He's pitched a complete
- 24:08game in both of his starts of the season. Defeated
- 24:11the Phillies 7 -0 on April 18th at Shea. He allowed
- 24:14only one hit, walked six and struck out 15. Lost
- 24:18to the Dodgers, won nothing on April 25th at
- 24:21Los Angeles. On occasion, he allowed two hits
- 24:23and five walks and struck out five. The three
- 24:26hits in the two games of Ryan have all been singles.
- 24:33Bobby Bonds playing center field today is up.
- 24:36Hitting .350, he has four home runs, one of which
- 24:39he hit yesterday, and ten runs batted in. Pitch
- 24:42is low for a ball. Last year he struck out 186
- 24:45times for a new Major League record in that department.
- 24:491 -0 to the right -hand batter. Ryan's pitch
- 24:55breaks in there for a called strike. Give him
- 24:59the curveball. Ola Ryan's 23 years of age, 6
- 25:03'2", 195 pounder. His lifetime major league record
- 25:07is 13 wins and 14 losses. Again, breaks it in
- 25:12there for a called strike. One and two to Bonds
- 25:15with Ron Hunt waiting on deck. With the veteran
- 25:19Willie Mays being rested today, Bonds plays center.
- 25:21Henderson moves to right and Bob Taylor's in
- 25:23left for the Giants. Fastball fouled off. One
- 25:27and two. The New York Mets with an infield of
- 25:30Don Clinton at first, Al Weiss at second, Bud
- 25:34Harrelson at shortstop, and Joe Foy at third.
- 25:38Leon Jones is in left, Tommy Agee in center,
- 25:41and Ron Swoboda is in right field. One -two pitch.
- 25:47Swung on and missed. Ryan strikes out. Bobby
- 25:49Bonds to open the ballgame as far as the Giants
- 25:51are concerned at the plate. He has an average
- 26:03of 400. He has two homers and 11 runs batted
- 26:06in. New York Mets have a record of nine wins
- 26:18and nine losses. Nine is the most they've ever
- 26:20won in the month of April. Last year in April,
- 26:22they were nine and 11. Pitch is high for a ball.
- 26:311 -0 to Ron Hunt with Ken Henderson on deck.
- 26:36McCovey hitting cleanup. Henderson batting third.
- 26:451 -0 pitch. And it's high for a ball. Ozzie Virgil
- 26:56is the coach at third for the Giants. And former
- 26:58Met manager Wes Westrom is on the lines at first.
- 27:07This pitch is low for a ball. 3 -0 to Huff. The
- 27:11return throw gets away from Ryan. All the other
- 27:17action in the National League is scheduled for
- 27:19night. The Chicago Cubs are at Atlanta. And Billy
- 27:23Williams, the... The Cub outfielder will be playing
- 27:26his 1 ,000th consecutive game. Streak started
- 27:29on September 22, 1963. Here's a fastball low.
- 27:33It's a walk to Ron Hutch. So Nolan Ryan has struck
- 27:41out one and walked one. And Ken Henderson, the
- 27:43switch hitter, is coming up. Henderson's hitting
- 27:49.382. He has two homers and 16 runs batted in.
- 27:52He had a home run yesterday. By the way, the
- 27:57consecutive game record in the major leagues,
- 28:002 ,130 set by Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees,
- 28:04and Billy Williams will be playing his 1 ,000th
- 28:08consecutive game tonight. Here is a pitch in
- 28:11for a call strike. He'll be the first National
- 28:13League to reach that mark. There are a lot of
- 28:14records that might never be broken. I don't see
- 28:17how anybody can break Gehrig's record of 2 ,130.
- 28:21No, it certainly appears to be out of reach.
- 28:24Swing and a ground ball is short. Harrelson has
- 28:26it. He goes over for one. And the throw to first.
- 28:28In time. A double play pulled off. As Weiss gave
- 28:32it the no -hand treatment coming across the bag
- 28:35on the pivot. Harrelson went astride in the hole
- 28:37up for the ball. Weiss just came across. Flipped
- 28:39on to Clem Dunnan. In time to pull off the double
- 28:43play. So it's no runs, no hits, a walk, no errors,
- 28:49and none left. At the end of an inning, the score
- 28:51is... The New York Mets, two, and the San Francisco
- 28:55Giants, nothing. Well, the Mets' ninth annual
- 29:01old -timers game on Saturday night, July 11th
- 29:04at Shea Stadium will be dedicated to Casey Stengel
- 29:07and his approaching 80th birthday. So a lot of
- 29:10the guests are going to be people who have been
- 29:11associated with and against Casey Stengel during
- 29:13his fabulous career. People like Drew Marquardt
- 29:17and Frankie Frisch, Dave Bancroft and George
- 29:20Highpockets Kelly. Al Lopez, Tony Cuccinello,
- 29:24and Van Mungo. Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Roger
- 29:28Maris, Whitey Ford, and Yogi Berra. Gil Hodges,
- 29:31Richie Ashman, Al Jackson, Jay Hook, Frank Thomas.
- 29:35Roy Campanella, Carl Erskine, Eddie Sankey, Bobby
- 29:38Thompson, Carl Ferrello, Don Drysdale, Sandy
- 29:41Koufax. Casey will be wearing his number 37 once
- 29:45again. The latest Hall of Famers, Lou Boudreau,
- 29:48Earl Combs, Jess Haynes, Ford Frick. So make
- 29:52your ticket plans now. The date again, Saturday
- 29:54night, July 11th, preceding the regular game
- 29:57between the Mets and the Expos. Buffy Dyer, the
- 30:09Mets catcher, is up. He's hitting 217, 5 for
- 30:1423, right -hand batter. Facing left -hand pitcher
- 30:18Mike McCormick. Here's a swing and a fly ball
- 30:27into right center, and Bobby Vaughn drifts over
- 30:30and makes the catch. We pause for station identification.
- 30:34This is the New York Mets baseball network. This
- 30:37is New York Mets baseball on WKAJ -FM 102 .3
- 30:41in Saratoga Springs, New York. With Ralph Cantor
- 30:44and Bob Murphy at Candlestick Park in San Francisco,
- 30:47California, where the Mets are leading the Giants
- 30:50by a score of 2 -0. The Mets are batting in the
- 30:52top of the second. One man out, nobody on base,
- 30:55and Nolan Ryan is up. He's one for seven this
- 30:57year. McCormick's pitch breaks low and inside
- 30:59a curveball. It's 1 -0. Tommy Agee moves up on
- 31:03deck. Again, the pitch. Low, so it goes 2 -0
- 31:13now to Nolan Ryan. Batting 143. The Houston Astros
- 31:19will be at St. Louis tonight against the Cardinals.
- 31:21The Astros have lost eight straight games all
- 31:24outdoors. Swing and a ground ball to a third.
- 31:27It is charged by Davenport. He guns it across
- 31:29in time. Bryant out on a swinging roll at a third.
- 31:35Fielded by Davenport in on the infield surface.
- 31:38And Tommy Agee is coming up. He's got 0 for 2.
- 31:41Agee with a 10 -game hitting streak. Flat out
- 31:43to right field at first time. Up in just now.
- 31:46He's giving Ryan time to get back to the dugout.
- 31:49Montreal Expos are playing the Dodgers down in
- 31:52Los Angeles tonight, and that's the slate in
- 31:54the National League. Oh, and the American, the
- 31:57Boston Red Sox, at Fenway Park, have handed the
- 31:59Oakland Athletics their fifth consecutive loss,
- 32:028 -7. Gary Peters, the winner, he's 2 -1. Jim
- 32:07Rowland, the loser, he's 0 -1. Here's a pitch
- 32:11to Agee. Swung on and fouled back. Out of play.
- 32:14Felipe Alou hit his first home of the year for
- 32:16Oakland in the first inning with two men on.
- 32:18Rico Petrucelli hit his third home of the year
- 32:21and the third with one on. George Scott hit his
- 32:23third and the fifth with one on. Billy Canigliano
- 32:26hit his first and the fifth with nobody on. Fernandez
- 32:29homed in the eighth with nobody on. Frank Fernandez
- 32:31for the Oakland A's. There's a swing and a ground
- 32:38ball to short. Lanier has it. Plays over to McCovey
- 32:41in time. So the side is out in order. No runs,
- 32:46no hits, no errors, and none left. In the middle
- 32:49of the second inning, the score is a match two
- 32:53and a giant nothing. Ted and Doris Raid at Raid's

- 33:39is well worth the little time it takes. You can
- 33:42call us, Rage Gardens, 584 -3236. Ted or Doris
- 33:45will be happy to give you directions. That's
- 33:48Rage Gardens, just two miles from downtown Saratoga,
- 33:51out Lake Avenue on the old Schuylerville Road,
- 33:53a small business with big plans. Willie McCovey
- 34:01is coming up for the Giants in the bottom of
- 34:03the second. The face fireballer, Nolan Ryan.
- 34:08McCovey is hitting 203. He has six home runs
- 34:11and 17 runs batted in. Ryan's fastball is high
- 34:19and away, so it is 1 -0. Dick Dietz is on deck.
- 34:24The Mets lead by a score of 2 -0. Joe Foy singled
- 34:28in two runs in the first inning. Breaking pitch
- 34:32low. Ryan goes behind now, 2 -0 to McCovey. The
- 34:38shift is on as the Mets put three infielders
- 34:40between first and second and leave only Bud Harrelson
- 34:43over on the shortstop side of the bag. There's
- 34:49a swing and a foul ball back out of play. To
- 34:52what? Through the years in baseball, there have
- 34:56been a lot of shifts employed. However, in many
- 35:00cases... Managers have chosen not to go with
- 35:02the shift with base runners on. Gil Hodges has
- 35:05been going with the same shift, even with runners
- 35:07at first and second. Those shifts take a lot
- 35:11of base hits away, Lindsey. I had one that was
- 35:14always pulled on me with a second baseman on
- 35:16the shortstop side. Well, here's a fly ball.
- 35:18It may go back to bases in the left field, but
- 35:21it's a foul ball by about a foot and a half.
- 35:24As McCovey went to the opposite field, lofted
- 35:27a pop down the left field line. Harrelson was
- 35:30racing to try to get to it. Jones, who was swung
- 35:33over and left, was trying to get there. Nobody
- 35:35could have got it, but it was a foul ball. So
- 35:37it's 2 -2. The psychology of a shift like this
- 35:41is to really take base hits away, but also they're
- 35:46willing to give up a single if McCovey would
- 35:48bunt or hit the ball the other way instead of
- 35:50the home run if he were swinging away and managed
- 35:53to connect the ball. Here's a 2 -2 pitch. Swung
- 35:57on it, only got a second. It takes a bad hop,
- 35:59but it's fielded there and thrown on by Foy.
- 36:02And McCovey is out. Foy was on the second base
- 36:06side of the bag, and that last hop it took was
- 36:09up off his chest, but he corralled it right then
- 36:10and threw on. Tell me, Lindsey, how are you going
- 36:12to score that? Well, I'll tell you about position.
- 36:18It's a difficult thing if you're scored by personnel.
- 36:21He is the third baseman, no matter where he plays,
- 36:24and so the official score says 5 -3. If he plays
- 36:27in center field, he's still the third baseman.
- 36:31One away, Dick Dietz is up. And the pitch is
- 36:36in for a call strike. I think that's one factor
- 36:39of the game that Abner Doubleday didn't consider
- 36:41when he supposedly invented baseball. Did you
- 36:46ever discuss it with him? No, but Cartwright
- 36:49has some pretty good theories on it. Here's a
- 36:51swing and a fly ball down the right field corner.
- 36:53If it stays fair, it's a foul ball. Again, that
- 36:57went way down the right field corner, but foul.
- 37:01Hey, why don't you stop in at your local Chevron
- 37:04Island and fill her up with Chevron Supreme Gasoline,
- 37:07the power pack fuel that's made for today's driving.
- 37:21here, 2 -0. Count is two strikes to Dietz with
- 37:25one man out and nobody on base. Ryan's fastball
- 37:29is outside. California Angels are in New York
- 37:32tonight to take on the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
- 37:35At Minnesota in the middle of the seventh inning,
- 37:37it's the Minnesota Twins 3 and the Cleveland
- 37:39Indians 1. Swing and a miss. Nolan Ryan has his
- 37:44second strikeout. He got Dietz swinging. Jim
- 37:48Davenport's coming up. Dietz, by the way, is
- 37:49hitting .397. Davenport's hitting .143. Luis
- 37:54Tiaz pitching today for Minnesota. Stan Williams
- 37:57relieved him in the seventh. Tiaz won three and
- 37:59lost none. Steve Hargan started for Cleveland.
- 38:01Bill Hennigan in the fifth and Bob Miller in
- 38:03the seventh. Greg Nettles homered in the fourth.
- 38:07Here's a swing and a foul ball back and out of
- 38:09play. Strike one to Davenport. Armand Killebrew
- 38:11got his fourth homer in the fourth with nobody
- 38:13on. Brad Ailey got his. Fifth homer in the fourth
- 38:17with one on from Minnesota. Leo Cardenas hit
- 38:19his second homer in the fifth with nobody on.
- 38:24There's a swing and a fly ball to right field.
- 38:26Ron Svoboda is there. And he puts it away. The
- 38:30side is out in order. So it's no runs, no hits,
- 38:32no errors, and none left. At the end of two innings
- 38:35of play, the score is the New York Mets 2 and
- 38:38the San Francisco Giants nothing. Walton Sports
- 38:43Shop is proud to handle the best possible line

- 39:35That's Walton Sports Shop, Lake Avenue in Saratoga.
- 39:38where sportsmen cater to sportsmen. Here at Candlestick
- 39:45Park on a sunny afternoon in San Francisco, the
- 39:49Mets are leading the Giants 2 -0 as they come
- 39:51up in the top of the third and here for the play
- 39:53-by -play, Ralph Kiner. Thank you, Lindsey Dawson,
- 39:56and hi, everyone. And Bud Ellison will lead off
- 39:58for the Mets here in the third. Bud popped up
- 40:01to the second baseman, Ron Hunt, his first time
- 40:03up. His average at 310 for the season, one home
- 40:06run, six runs batted in. Right -hand batter against
- 40:09the left -hander, Mike McCormick. Mike with a
- 40:13various assortment of small curveballs, and he
- 40:16starts off with a curve, and it's popped up in
- 40:17foul territory. The third baseman, Jim Davenport,
- 40:20over near the Met dugout, and he makes the catch.
- 40:25So McCormick, who worked the second inning one,
- 40:28two, three, and very quickly, picks up an out
- 40:30here in the third on one pitch, and it brings
- 40:32up Cleon Jones. Cleon worked out a walk his first
- 40:36time up at a 3 -2 pitch. Moved down to second
- 40:39base in a single by Don Clendenin. When Ron's
- 40:42promoter walked in the 3 -2 pitch, Jones went
- 40:44over to third, and he scored the first run of
- 40:46the ballgame on a single to center field by Joe
- 40:49Poi. Mets also got a run in when Don Clendenin
- 40:53crossed from second base on the single by Poi.
- 40:56Mets leading 2 -0, one away, top of the third.
- 41:00And Cleon takes the first pitch for a called
- 41:02strike. Cleon, his first time up, was taking
- 41:05all away. He wants to look at the ball. He feels
- 41:08he is not comfortable at the plate, and he has
- 41:11been taking the first pitches. Now a curve back
- 41:14that's in the dirt, and they count one ball and
- 41:16one strike. Cleon hitting .224 with no home runs.
- 41:19He has eight runs batted in with three doubles
- 41:23and one triple. Cleon got off to a fast start,
- 41:26and he has not been hitting lately. Now a pitch
- 41:29back, foul back, and it's one and two. Tommy
- 41:37Agee, along with Cleon Jones in the batting slot,
- 41:39despite the fact that Tommy has hit in ten consecutive
- 41:43games, but he has not been hitting the ball hard.
- 41:45Yesterday, he kept that streak going as a pinch
- 41:48hitter and did hit a hard single to the left
- 41:50in the ninth inning. One ball, two strikes. McCormick
- 41:56back. And a fly ball to center field. Bobby Bonds
- 42:00moves back, gets under the ball, makes the catch.
- 42:06and that brings up Don Vendenen. Don hit a hard
- 42:12single to left field his first time up. He's
- 42:15averaged now at .256. He has three home runs,
- 42:18got his third yesterday, and it was a landmarker.
- 42:22He has driven an 11 runs that leads the club.
- 42:27And the first pitch by McCormick has swung on
- 42:29and missed, strike one. McCormick throws a screwball
- 42:32along with his breaking pitches. Now the pitch,
- 42:42and it's low on the count. One ball and one strike.
- 42:45Got a chance yesterday to talk a little bit with
- 42:47a great left -hander who had a great screwball,
- 42:49Carl Hubble. Carl, a one -time, 126 games for
- 42:53the New York Giants back in 1936. There's a line
- 42:57drive single to center field. Bobby Bond comes
- 43:00over to play the first half. And Glendon, and
- 43:02now two for two in the game. That brings up Ron
- 43:05Svoboda. Mets leading by a score of 2 -0. The
- 43:23giant club record for most wins by a pitcher.
- 43:30Christy Mathewson. He won 37 in 1908. Now swinging
- 43:38a foul on the ground at strike one. Al Hubbell
- 43:46at one time won 24 ballgames in succession over
- 43:50a period of two years. 16 in 1936 and 8 in 1937
- 43:55before he lost one. Now a slow curveball grounded
- 43:59out in the hole coming over the shortstop. Amir,
- 44:02the long throw to first base is in time. The
- 44:05out is made. Good play by Al Amir in the shortstop.
- 44:07No run, one hit, no errors. The man left the
- 44:10first and the score in the middle of the third.
- 44:12The Mets 2, San Francisco Giants. Nothing. If
- 44:17you're shopping around for a new car, and you

- 44:49Hills right on Route 50, as well as the main
- 44:52office in Ballston Spa. And you can phone ahead
- 44:55if you like for details and monthly payment figures
- 44:58on the exact amount of cash you'll need for your
- 45:00new car. Call 885 -6711, Ballston Spa National
- 45:05Bank, about a money -saving direct new car loan.
- 45:09885 -6711. Boston Spa National Bank, the bank
- 45:14that saves you money, might be a great place
- 45:17to do all your banking. We're going to the bottom
- 45:25of the third inning. The Giants coming up, and
- 45:27the first batter will be the left fielder, Bob
- 45:29Taylor. Enter a left -hand batter. He'll be followed
- 45:32by Hal Lanier, and then the pitcher, Mike McCormick.
- 45:35On the mound for the Mets, Nolan Ryan. With a
- 45:39native. A double play, Ryan has pitched to six
- 45:41batters in his first two innings. One man getting
- 45:44on on the walk. First pitch is high, and it's
- 45:46ball one. Daylor hitting 133. He's had two hits
- 45:52and 15 times up this year. And the 1 -0 pitch
- 45:56by Ryan, a fastball that is outside, and they
- 45:59count two balls and no strikes. It's just off
- 46:01the plate. has struck out two and two innings,
- 46:07is high for a ball game, 15. Next pitch is a
- 46:13breaking ball. It's inside ball three, three
- 46:16balls and no strikes. That set a club record,
- 46:19the 15 strikeouts, but it was broken by Tom Seaver,
- 46:22who struck out 19 against San Diego. That's had
- 46:25an all -time high record. The 3 -0 delivery.
- 46:30It's high ball four. Now Nolan Ryan has walked
- 46:32Taylor on four pitches. His other walk also was
- 46:35on four pitches to Ron Hunt. Potentially it puts
- 46:44the time run at the plate. Howell near the batter.
- 46:46Howell got a home run in yesterday's win for
- 46:48the Giants. A free run home run. He had not hit
- 46:52a home run since 1966 in the Major Leagues until
- 46:56this year. And his home run yesterday was his
- 47:00second for this season. Has a lifetime total
- 47:03of seven. And he takes the first pitch of Carl's
- 47:06strike. On the air batting 176, he has four runs
- 47:11batted in. Talking about Carl Hubble's consecutive
- 47:16wins over a period of two seasons of 24, Tom
- 47:19Seaver has won his last 14 for the men. Four
- 47:24of them this year. Swing and a foul back off
- 47:26a fastball. McCown at strike two. Tom will be
- 47:29going in tomorrow's game at San Diego. We'll
- 47:31be on the air at 1025 for that one. Al Santorini
- 47:36will be pitching for San Diego. He has a win
- 47:39over the Mets. The only one that San Diego had
- 47:40over the Mets last year. Mets defeated them 11
- 47:44out of 12. Next pitch is fouled off. Again, the
- 47:47fastball. McCown stays at strike two. The biggest
- 47:54game ever played as a matter of time between
- 47:58the Mets and the Giants. Seven hours, 23 minutes,
- 48:0023 innings. May 31st, 1964. Tomorrow, we go into
- 48:09the month of May. Now again, a swing and a miss
- 48:11and the ball fouled off. the fastest game of
- 48:22their career in 51 minutes. Nine -inning ball
- 48:26game against Philadelphia on September 28, 1919.
- 48:3051 minutes. Now again, it's Ryan back in a curveball.
- 48:36It's in the air, over the head of the second
- 48:38baseman. Now, why is the base hit? And Lanier
- 48:42becomes the fourth man to get a base hit against
- 48:44Ryan this year. Ryan had done. to his first two
- 48:50starts, giving up only three hits. That brings
- 48:57up Mike McCormick, who is a good -hitting pitcher.
- 48:59He has had seven home runs in his Major League
- 49:02career. We have to guard against him. At this
- 49:05point, he'll be batting with no one out and the
- 49:08tie run at first, so we'll be looking for a possible
- 49:10sacrifice. McCormick has been up 12 times this
- 49:20year without a hit. Don Condon in the first baseman
- 49:22in, very, very tight. Hard to bunt on this artificial
- 49:28surface. There's a chopper bounced out to Ryan.
- 49:31He'll have to wait for it to come down. He does.
- 49:32Throws the first base to Weiss covering there,
- 49:34and the sacrifice is effective. Well, there's
- 49:37one way to bunt on this artificial surface, Lindsay.
- 49:41Just chop it down, and the ball will bounce high
- 49:43in the air. That's what happened, and Ryan had
- 49:45to wait for it to come down. Well, the dime run
- 49:53moves down to second base in scoring position
- 49:55with Bob Tender on ahead at third. And the batter,
- 49:59Bobby Bonds, who was struck out his first time
- 50:02up. Bonds batting .346. He has four home runs,
- 50:10ten runs batted in. That's playing the infield
- 50:13back. They lead 2 -0 in the first pitch, a curve
- 50:17that's in for a foul strike, and Bonds backs
- 50:19away from the plate. He was fooled by that one.
- 50:24Bonds was struck out on a 1 -2 fastball his first
- 50:27time up. Bonds now has been struck out 25 times
- 50:33this year in 22 games. And at one strike, the
- 50:41pitch by Ryan. Again, the curve is topped out
- 50:44toward shortstop. Come off by Foy. A play at
- 50:47first base in time. And on the play. Bob Tanner
- 50:50scores from third, and Alan Ear runs over to
- 50:54third. So it's now a 2 -1 ballgame, a run batted
- 50:57in for Barnes. An argument at first base as both
- 51:00Barnes and the first base coach, Wes Westrom,
- 51:05argue with the first base umpire, Ken Burkhardt,
- 51:08and Burkhardt's got a very short fuse. Now Clyde
- 51:12King comes out of the dugout. He wants to say
- 51:14something to Burkhardt. Ed Sudol, a second base
- 51:17umpire, coming over for some more support. And
- 51:21King now, King now arguing with Burkhart. Weston
- 51:25had walked away. He comes back to the discussion.
- 51:29Now coming from the iron deck circle over to
- 51:31the argument, Ken Henderson. Westrom walks away.
- 51:52King still stays there. Barnes is going back
- 51:55to the dugout. King is the kind of a man who
- 51:59will argue very quietly. He's not very strong
- 52:04in his talking personality. He's very persistent,
- 52:10though. He's still there with the argument. On
- 52:19the play, the time run has moved over to third,
- 52:22and we still have a discussion going. After six
- 52:32innings of play, the White Sox lead Baltimore
- 52:344 -2. White Sox with four runs in the bottom
- 52:37of the sixth inning. Knocking Tom Peebles out.
- 52:41King is still there, arguing. Started to walk
- 52:44away, came back. Now he goes away. Harden is
- 52:50now pitching for a battle more in place of Phoebus.
- 52:52Tommy John, who has lost five, won none. The
- 52:56start in the ballgame for the White Sox. Milwaukee
- 53:00scheduled Washington for a night game. Detroit
- 53:02against Kansas City for a night game. Kansas
- 53:05City has lost seven in a row. At the end of seven,
- 53:09Minnesota three, Cleveland one. Now order has
- 53:12been restored and we're set to go. Two men away,
- 53:15the batter Ron Hunt. Ron walked on four pitches
- 53:17in his... First time up. Mets have been unable
- 53:21to get him out. He was on every time yesterday.
- 53:26And the first pitch is outside the ball. Unbetting
- 53:35at an even 400. He has had three game -winning
- 53:41hits for the Giants. The 1 -0 pitch by Ryan,
- 53:46a curveball that is in for a called strike. Ron
- 53:50Hunt moved away from the pitch. He stands right
- 53:53on top of the plate, which would make it difficult
- 53:59for him on the inside pitch. Now Ryan into the
- 54:03windup, and time is called. Hunt stepping out
- 54:07of the batter's box. Now Hunt back in. And at
- 54:231 -1, the pitch by Ryan is a fastball that is
- 54:26low, and it's two balls and one strike. Ron Hunt
- 54:36originally signed with the Milwaukee Braves.
- 54:39That's got him from the farm system. moved on
- 54:43to L .A., and now here with San Francisco. The
- 54:462 -1 delivery popped in the air to center field.
- 54:49Moving over is Tommy Agee to get under the ball.
- 54:51He's now called off by Ron Svoboda, and Ron makes
- 54:54a catch as the wind drifts the ball toward him.
- 54:57Every tie is a side, but in the inning, a run
- 54:59for San Francisco, they have one hit. There was
- 55:03a walk, and one man left on. And the score, at
- 55:07the end of three, New York Mets 2, the San Francisco
- 55:10Giants 1. to Carmody Ford and Mercury at the

- 56:15We're going to the top of the fourth inning.
- 56:17The Mets leading 2 -1 after three. Nolan Ryan
- 56:20dueling with Mike McCormick. And the first batter
- 56:23for the Mets will be Joe Foy, who drove in two
- 56:26Mets runs in the first inning with a single to
- 56:28center field. Mets have had two runs on three
- 56:32hits. Don Fundenin picking up two hits along
- 56:34with Joe Foy. Giants have one run on one hit.
- 56:39Base hit by Howell Anear. And now Joel Boyd,
- 56:46the batter. Joel, right -hand batter. And the
- 56:49first pitch is a screwball. It's over for a called
- 56:51strike. Boyd hitting 183. Now has seven, make
- 56:55it eight runs batted in. He's had one home run.
- 57:01And McCormick, a left -hander. And the one -strike
- 57:04delivery is a curveball inside. So he breaks
- 57:07one the other way. And the count evens at one
- 57:09ball and one strike. Cormac with a record of
- 57:131 -1 this year. And the 1 -1 pitch. Slow curveball
- 57:25that hangs up high and it's two balls in one
- 57:27strike. I got some trivia for you, Lindsey. But
- 57:31Cormac attended Mark Keppel High School in Alhambra,
- 57:34California. Ho, ho, ho. Campbell covered. 2 -1
- 57:40and the pitch. Hit hard in the hole and on through
- 57:43in the left field as O 'Neal dies for it and
- 57:46he cannot come up with it. So far he has two
- 57:49for two along with Don Clendenin. The Mets now
- 57:51have four hits. And it brings up Al White. Al
- 57:58was struck out his first time up. Mets leading
- 58:03by a 2 -1 margin with no one out or in the top
- 58:06of the fourth. Now McCormick working from the
- 58:16set position. Weiss hitting at 2 -11. The runner
- 58:19going. The pitch is swung on and missed. A big
- 58:21jump by Boyd. He steals the base easily. Joe
- 58:25Boyd with a stolen base and he did it on the
- 58:27pitcher. He got a tremendous jump. That is his
- 58:30fifth stolen base of the year. Boyd now has five
- 58:37out of seven for the Mets and he is in scoring
- 58:39position. Now Weiss protecting him as he swung
- 58:43at the pitch. One strike count. Boy, last year
- 58:47had 37 stolen bases for Kansas City. Now McCormick,
- 58:55again from the set position. And the pitch to
- 58:59Weiss. Curveball low and inside. McCormick trying
- 59:01to keep the pitch inside to keep Weiss from hitting
- 59:03behind the runner. One ball and one strike. Gil
- 59:10Hodges believes that... One of the most important
- 59:15plays in baseball is when a batter gives himself
- 59:17up and hits a ground ball toward the second baseman.
- 59:21In a situation like this, no one out, a runner
- 59:23at second base. Now the pitch. It is again the
- 59:29low inside curveball, too low for ball two. Two
- 59:32balls and one strike. Signs go out. McCormick
- 59:49working very slowly. Sets up again. And the 2
- 59:54-1 pitch. It is low at the knees. A called strike
- 59:58two in the count. Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:00:01McCormick coming back with a fastball knee high.
- 1:00:17Weiss batting from the right -hand side all the
- 1:00:19way since last year. And the 2 -2 pitch is swung
- 1:00:23on and missed, and now Weiss is struck out for
- 1:00:25the second time. McCormick got him with an inside
- 1:00:28curveball. The only thing that's going to impress
- 1:00:31you about a White Owl cigar is how it tastes
- 1:00:33compared to other cigars. To really appreciate
- 1:00:36a White Owl cigar, you have to smoke their cigar.
- 1:00:41Now Duffy Dyer, the batter. Duffy flied to center
- 1:00:48field his first time up. Right -hand batter.
- 1:00:53Batting a 2 -0 -8 for the year. Duffy has yet
- 1:00:55to drive in a run this year. Runner at second
- 1:00:59base. One man on top of the fourth. Immensely
- 1:01:012 -1. And a play on at second base. Foy gets
- 1:01:06back just in time. The throw taken by Ron Hunt.
- 1:01:09And the throw was away from Hunt. He had to make
- 1:01:12a good play to catch the ball. He had to reach
- 1:01:14over Foy and... Catch the ball, keep it from
- 1:01:17going in the center field. Now McCormick again
- 1:01:23has Hunt at the bag, and this time he does not
- 1:01:25throw as Foy gets back before any action took
- 1:01:28place. The guy is trying to hold a very fast
- 1:01:34man, Joe Foy, close to the bag at second in case
- 1:01:36of a play at the plate on a base hit to the outfield.
- 1:01:39Here's the pitch. Slow curveball over the inside
- 1:01:41corner, strike one. McCormick takes a lot off
- 1:01:44the curve. One strikeout. Cormac now sets up.
- 1:02:04And the play for him is stealing. It is inside.
- 1:02:07The quarterback is not in time. And Joe Foy has
- 1:02:10stolen his second base of the inning. That is
- 1:02:14number six for Joe Foy this season. He got again
- 1:02:17a big jump. So now the Giants will probably set
- 1:02:22their infield in. Which gives Duffy Dyer a much
- 1:02:26better chance to hit with one man out here in
- 1:02:28the top of the fourth. Mets have a lot of base
- 1:02:37-dealing potential in their lineup this year.
- 1:02:40Slow curveball, tough bat to the mound. McCormick
- 1:02:42fields it, shovels off underhanded. And the players
- 1:02:46make the play in time on Troy as he flies into
- 1:02:49the tag. On the fielder's choice, Dyer is at
- 1:02:52first base, and we pause for station identification.
- 1:02:54This is the New York Mets baseball network. This
- 1:02:57is your New York Mets baseball station in Saratoga
- 1:03:00Springs, New York. WKAJ -FM 102 .3 on your dial.
- 1:03:06Rob Kiner along with Lindsey Nelson and Bob Murphy
- 1:03:09from San Francisco, California. Play at the plate,
- 1:03:12a good play by Mike McCormick, cutting off Joe
- 1:03:14Foy trying to score from third. Now it's Duffy
- 1:03:17Dyer at first base with two men out at the top
- 1:03:19of the fourth. The Mets leading by one, and the
- 1:03:21batter is Nolan Ryan. First pitch to Nolan, a
- 1:03:25slow curveball, too low for a ball. Ryan has
- 1:03:31had one hit. And eight times up this year. And
- 1:03:40McCormick back again, and a fastball is swung
- 1:03:42on and missed it. One and one. One ball, one
- 1:03:53strike. Dyer not being held on at first base
- 1:03:56as Willie McCovey plays behind him. Next pitch
- 1:04:00is hit hard down to the shortstop. Amiri makes
- 1:04:03a one -hand grab, races to the back, a second
- 1:04:05for the fourth play, taking a base hit away from
- 1:04:08Ryan and concluding the inning. No runs, one
- 1:04:11hit. No errors, a man left at first. And the
- 1:04:16score in the middle of the fourth inning. The
- 1:04:19New York Mets steal the San Francisco Giants
- 1:04:21one. I am going on a long journey. I will be
- 1:04:31following the springs. It is high time that I
- 1:04:37was searching for the natural things. When something's
- 1:04:44good and natural, you can't rush it. You leave
- 1:04:47it alone to age. And that's how we make a natural
- 1:04:50beer. At Rheingold, we don't try to speed up
- 1:04:53carbonation. We let the beer age long enough
- 1:04:56to carbonate itself naturally, giving it a good
- 1:04:59extra dry natural taste. It's expensive to make
- 1:05:02beer by natural carbonation because we can't
- 1:05:05make it any faster than nature. Natural Rheingold.
- 1:05:19Rheingold Breweries Incorporated, New York, New
- 1:05:21York, and Orange, New Jersey ask you to help
- 1:05:23keep America beautiful. Bottom half of the fourth
- 1:05:28inning, the Mets leading the Giants by a 2 -1
- 1:05:31score, and the first batter for the Giants will
- 1:05:34be the right fielder, Ken Henderson. Ken hit
- 1:05:36into a double play his first time up. Left -hand
- 1:05:41batter against the right -hander at Olin Ryan,
- 1:05:44hitting at .377. Ryan has struck out two in the
- 1:05:53ballgame. He has been reached for one run on
- 1:05:55one hit. A walk to Bob Taylor cost him the run.
- 1:06:00It was driven in by Bobby Bonds on the grounder
- 1:06:03to third. And the first pitch occurred at slowest
- 1:06:06ball one. Ryan has walked two batters in the
- 1:06:12ballgame, both on four pitches, but he has not
- 1:06:14been wild. By being very wild, he has missed
- 1:06:17very closely. Now back again in the high inside
- 1:06:20fastball for ball two. He'll be pitching to Ken
- 1:06:24Henderson, Willie McCovey, and Dick Dietz here
- 1:06:26in this inning. And the right -hander's next
- 1:06:29pitch is swung on and fouled back. Henderson
- 1:06:32going for a high fastball on the count. Two balls
- 1:06:35and one strike. And the next delivery is fouled
- 1:06:49back against the screen. Again, the fastball,
- 1:06:51it's two and two. Line with a record of one win
- 1:06:55and one loss as part of the fact that in its
- 1:06:57first two decisions, going all the way, gave
- 1:07:02up only three hits. And the next delivery at
- 1:07:10two -two is a curve that's low. And a full count
- 1:07:13to Ken Henderson. On deck batter, Willie McCovey.
- 1:07:22Big pitch coming up here for Ryan. He takes the
- 1:07:25windup and delivers. And he misses just off the
- 1:07:29outside corner with a fastball. That pitch was
- 1:07:32very, very close. That walks Henderson and brings
- 1:07:36up Willie McCovey with no one out in the bottom
- 1:07:38of the fourth inning, and the Mets trying to
- 1:07:39protect a one -run lead. McCovey with a shift
- 1:07:50on, grounded to Joe Foy, the third baseman, and
- 1:07:53he was playing in the normal second baseman's
- 1:07:56position. Al Weiss, the second baseman, is in
- 1:07:59shallow right field. And the first pitch to McCovey
- 1:08:02is a curveball too low for a ball. Bud Harrelson,
- 1:08:07the shortstop, left in the normal shortstop position.
- 1:08:13Similar shift devised by Lou Boudreau on Ted
- 1:08:17Williams. Pitch back, a fastball, swung on a
- 1:08:19miss. One and one. One ball, one strike. Covey
- 1:08:30had a big swing, as you could probably hear.
- 1:08:33From the fans, now the pitch. Throw ball, and
- 1:08:36again, a swing and a miss. Good pitch by Ryan.
- 1:08:38He had McCovey pulled, and the Cavs won in two.
- 1:08:46McCovey's had six home runs this year, 17 runs
- 1:08:49batted in. He's sitting at 200. And Ryan's next
- 1:08:56to the livery, a fastball right through the middle
- 1:08:58of the plate. McCovey stepped out of the batter's
- 1:09:00box as some dust blew by, and the Mets' contending
- 1:09:03time was not called. And here comes Gil Hodges
- 1:09:06out to argue. The umpire has to call time, and
- 1:09:10the batter cannot get it unless the umpire agrees
- 1:09:12to give it to him. And you'd have to believe
- 1:09:14from the way Duffy Dyer and Ryan acted. that
- 1:09:16the umpire did not call time. He just gave the
- 1:09:20pitch to Willie McCovey. And that's what Gil
- 1:09:23Hodges is contending. The pitch was right down
- 1:09:26the middle of fastball. And McCovey stepped out
- 1:09:29of the batter's box while Ryan was in the act
- 1:09:31of delivering because of the dust that flew by.
- 1:09:35So we have our second argument of the day. The
- 1:09:38first was lost by the Giants on a play at first
- 1:09:41base, and now it's Gil Hodges saying he wants
- 1:09:43McCovey struck out. as technically time was not
- 1:09:46called. Now Ken Burkhart, the first base umpire,
- 1:09:51is taking up the argument. All four umpires are
- 1:09:58at home plate trying to help out Andy Olsen who
- 1:10:01had a decision reversed by his fellow umpires
- 1:10:04in Los Angeles. Now Gill apparently has been...
- 1:10:13Satisfied, and he is going back to the dugout.
- 1:10:15Possibly not satisfied, but he has given up the
- 1:10:17argument. And McGovey's still at the plate. Umpires
- 1:10:24go back to their stations. Burkhart to first
- 1:10:26base. Sudol to second. DeWired to third. And
- 1:10:34Ryan looks in for another sign. Runner at first
- 1:10:37base. He represents the time run. And the pitch.
- 1:10:40Curveball high and away. Duffy Dyer down to send
- 1:10:50out the sign. And Ryan sets. Here's the pitch.
- 1:10:56Fastball grounded towards Foy. The second baseman,
- 1:10:59Foy, charges. He has no play at second base.
- 1:11:02Picks up the out at first. There's no one at
- 1:11:04third. And going over is Ryan to cover. And the
- 1:11:07throw is perfect by Don Tandon. And Ryan takes
- 1:11:09the throw and makes the pass. That's the way
- 1:11:13it was. Ships on. Harrelson, the shortstop, was
- 1:11:15over covering second base. If Boyd had time to
- 1:11:19throw there, there was nobody at third. Boyd,
- 1:11:21of course, the third baseman playing at the second
- 1:11:23baseman's position. The second baseman playing
- 1:11:25in right field. And so Henderson thought he could
- 1:11:28make it over to third. Ryan, the pitcher, coming
- 1:11:31from the pitcher's mound, beating to the bag.
- 1:11:33And a perfect throw by Don Clendenin as just
- 1:11:36about everybody was running toward third base.
- 1:11:38You don't see too many 5 -3 -1 double plays.
- 1:11:41So that's right. It's a 5 -3 -1 double play.
- 1:11:45And the Giants lose a baserunner from scoring
- 1:11:48position on the gamble. And now the batter will
- 1:11:51be the catcher, Dick Dietz. And he takes the
- 1:11:54first pitch low. It's ball one. 5 -3 -1 double
- 1:12:02play started from second base. And finished at
- 1:12:05third. And finished at third. Now there's a new
- 1:12:08one for you. That's the second double play for
- 1:12:17the Mets in the game. Anderson was involved in
- 1:12:21that one, too. The next pitch is low, and it's
- 1:12:22ball two. Dietz was struck out his first time
- 1:12:25up on a fastball. He's batting .391 for the year
- 1:12:28with six home runs and 21 runs batted in. The
- 1:12:312 -0 pitch. It's in the dirt, curveball missing,
- 1:12:34and the count, three balls, no strikes. Well,
- 1:12:43they say in baseball you see something new every
- 1:12:45day. We can chalk this one up today, Lindsey.
- 1:12:49Well, it's that way. I never saw that play before,
- 1:12:53believe me. Three balls, no strikes. Ryan into
- 1:13:01the lineup and the pitch to Dietz. It's in for
- 1:13:03a call strike. Now 3 -1, the pitch back is high,
- 1:13:17and it's ball four, and Ryan has walked his second
- 1:13:19batter this inning, and it's fourth in the ballgame.
- 1:13:27So again, the time run is at first base, and
- 1:13:29the batter this time is Jim Davenport. Jim, on
- 1:13:32a fastball, flied out to right field his first
- 1:13:34time up. Deets not being held on at first base
- 1:13:41by Clendenin. He's playing behind him. And the
- 1:13:46pitch. High fastball, ball one. Mets have two
- 1:13:53runs on four hits. The Giants have one run and
- 1:13:56one hit. And Nolan Ryan, the young fireballer,
- 1:14:05working to Jim Davenport. And the next pitch
- 1:14:08is high. Davenport was starting the swing and
- 1:14:10then held off. It's two balls and no strikes.
- 1:14:13The other day, Wes Parker was asked if Ryan was
- 1:14:17the fastest pitcher in the league, and he said,
- 1:14:19no one throws harder. The 2 -0 pitch. And a curveball
- 1:14:28that's inside, and it got now 3 -0. And Ryan's
- 1:14:33loss to the Dodgers, in which he gave up two
- 1:14:35hits at the start of this road trip. He was throwing
- 1:14:40his curveball when he was behind and getting
- 1:14:42the curveball over. Today, he has not been able
- 1:14:44to do that. Of course, that would be a mark of
- 1:14:48an outstanding pitcher. And a 3 -0, the pitch.
- 1:14:53It's in for a called strike, and it's 3 -1. On
- 1:14:57deck batter, a left fielder, Bob Taylor. Now
- 1:15:04a 3 -1. Pitch is swung on and missed, and a full
- 1:15:08count. 3 -2. Runner at first base, Dick Dietz,
- 1:15:12will be running. Infield. Notified of that. Here's
- 1:15:19the 3 -2 pitch. A runner going, and it's fouled
- 1:15:21off. The Cow remains at 3 -2, and Dietz goes
- 1:15:25back to first. New ball put in play, and Ryan.
- 1:15:38Goes off the pitching mound to rub it up. Baltimore
- 1:15:45got a run. Now a pitch inside and high ball four.
- 1:15:49And Ryan has walked his fourth, his third man
- 1:15:52in the inning. And it brings up the left fielder,
- 1:15:55Bob Taylor. That is his fifth walk in the ballgame.
- 1:16:02In the Baltimore -Chicago game, the White Sox
- 1:16:06score Baltimore. Three after six and a half innings.
- 1:16:09Time called because of rain. Baltimore got a
- 1:16:13run in the seventh on Frank Robinson's fourth
- 1:16:15home run of the year. Taylor's a left -hand batter.
- 1:16:21He walked on four pitches his first time up and
- 1:16:23has scored the only giant run. Let's lead two
- 1:16:25to one. Giant threatening. And a curve is hideaway
- 1:16:29ball one. Rube Walker, the pitching coach of
- 1:16:39the Mets, now trotting out to the mound. Ken
- 1:16:49Henderson led off the inning on a 3 -2 walk.
- 1:16:51Willie McCovey was next, and with the shift on,
- 1:16:54Willie grounded to Joe Foy, the third baseman,
- 1:16:58playing in the second baseman's position with
- 1:17:00the second baseman in shallow right field. Foy
- 1:17:04had no play on... Henderson at second base on
- 1:17:07the slow ground ball by McCovey. He threw over
- 1:17:10to first base, and McCovey was out. There was
- 1:17:12no one covering third, and Henderson trying to
- 1:17:14go to third was out when Fendenin threw to Ryan,
- 1:17:18who finally covered the bag. Then Dick Dietz
- 1:17:21walked in a 3 -1 pitch, and Jim Dallenport walked
- 1:17:24in a 3 -2 pitch to put runners back on. Now the
- 1:17:27pitch to Taylor. It's way inside and low, and
- 1:17:29it's ball two. Two balls, no strikes. Taylor
- 1:17:40is a stocky left -hand batter. Small strikes
- 1:17:44on the 2 -0 pitch. Swung on and missed. And it's
- 1:17:482 -1. Taylor batting 133. Two hits and 15 times
- 1:17:57up. Two balls, one strike. Ryan set. And the
- 1:18:07pitch. Swung on and missed. Strike two. So Ryan
- 1:18:11back even at two and two. Been a long inning.
- 1:18:22With all the walk. Ryan sets. Checks at second
- 1:18:31base. And the pitch to the plate. It is just
- 1:18:34low and that pitch was close. That fills the
- 1:18:37count. So the runners will be going two men away.
- 1:18:41The count three and two on Bob Taylor, the on
- 1:18:44-deck batter, Howell Lanier. Ryan having trouble
- 1:18:52trying to get that final out. And the pitch.
- 1:18:56It is top foul into the stand. So Ryan gets it
- 1:19:00over, but Taylor spoils it. Ryan will have to
- 1:19:03do it all over again. Jim Davenport had the count
- 1:19:07three and two and fouled one off and then walked.
- 1:19:21Signs go out. Ryan sets up. The runners go. The
- 1:19:27pitch. Swung on and missed. And Ryan strikes
- 1:19:30out Bob Taylor to end the inning. That's his
- 1:19:33third strikeout in the inning. No runs, no hits,
- 1:19:36no errors. Three walks and two men left on. And
- 1:19:41the score, at the end of four, the Mets two,
- 1:19:44the Giants one. Well, Mets fans, we're into another

- 1:20:41Wax is 50 cents extra. Believe me, Mets fans,
- 1:20:44this is a bargain with today's inflated prices.
- 1:20:47Come on in and give them a try. We'll have the
- 1:20:52top of the batting order up here in the fifth
- 1:20:53inning now. Through four innings of play at Candlestick,
- 1:20:56it's the New York Mets two runs on four hits
- 1:20:58and no errors. The San Francisco Giants one run,
- 1:21:01only one hit and no errors. A .G. had a 10 -game
- 1:21:04hitting streak coming into today's game. He's
- 1:21:07gone 0 -2 so far. He flied to right and he grounded
- 1:21:09out short to first. Mike McCormick has walked
- 1:21:13two and struck out two so far. New York Mets
- 1:21:18will be in San Diego tomorrow night. We'll be
- 1:21:20on the air at 10 .25 p .m. New York time. It'll
- 1:21:24be a Saturday afternoon game at San Diego and
- 1:21:27then a Sunday doubleheader. We'll be televising
- 1:21:30the first game on Sunday from San Diego. The
- 1:21:34Mets will travel back to New York on Monday and
- 1:21:36open up on Tuesday night at Shea Stadium in New
- 1:21:39York against the Los Angeles Dodgers. A .G. is
- 1:21:43in and waiting left -hander. Mike McCormick takes
- 1:21:45the sign. Goes into the motion. Here's the pitch.
- 1:21:51High for a ball. Bud Harrelson is on deck. The
- 1:21:55Mets are leading here by a score of 2 -1. Wind
- 1:21:59blowing out toward right characteristically here
- 1:22:01at Candlestick. And that pitch misses outside.
- 1:22:08Here's a final score in the American League.
- 1:22:10The Minnesota Twins have defeated the Cleveland
- 1:22:12Indians by a score of 4 -1. Luis Teod got his
- 1:22:15fourth win of the year. He's lost none, and Steve
- 1:22:17Hargan took the loss. There's a swing and a high
- 1:22:22pop to the right side. Hunt retreats into right
- 1:22:24field, and Ken Henderson moves up and calls him
- 1:22:26off. Henderson makes the catch. Went away. Bud
- 1:22:31Harrison's the batter. Been up twice without
- 1:22:33a hit. Brought a four -game hitting streak into
- 1:22:35the ballgame. He is hit safely in 16 of the 18
- 1:22:39games played by the Mets this year. At Sox Park
- 1:22:44in Chicago, midway of the seventh inning, the
- 1:22:46White Sox are leading the Baltimore Orioles by
- 1:22:48a score of 4 -3, and time has been called there
- 1:22:51because of rain in Chicago. That pitch is low
- 1:22:58for a ball. The Baltimore run in the seventh
- 1:23:01was a home run by Frank Robinson, his fourth
- 1:23:03of this season. Far mix pitch. Swung on and line
- 1:23:10in the right center. Could be in between. Can
- 1:23:12Bonds catch up? He can't. It's over him and all
- 1:23:14the way to the wall. Harrison is at second and
- 1:23:16he's going to try for three. But Harrison going
- 1:23:19on in standing at third with a triple. And it
- 1:23:23is his fourth triple of this season. A power
- 1:23:27blast for the little man who found some power
- 1:23:29somewhere this year and he's been delivering
- 1:23:31it. Harrison tripling with one man out. It was
- 1:23:37to right center, and Bobby Bonds, who has a world
- 1:23:40of speed, started over. Couldn't catch up because
- 1:23:42it was beyond him. Now, Cleon Jones is coming
- 1:23:48up as the Giants have to play the infield in.
- 1:23:51Cleon has walked and flied to center so far.
- 1:23:53The Mets leading by a score of 2 -1 and making
- 1:23:55a bid here to get another run in. Harrelson at
- 1:23:57third with one man out. Leon Jones settled himself
- 1:24:06carefully, slowly into the batter's box. Mike
- 1:24:10McCormick now into the motion. The pitch is high
- 1:24:14and tight for a ball. Waiting on deck is Don
- 1:24:18Clendenin. Frank Rehberger is up and throwing
- 1:24:25again in the bullpen for the San Francisco Giants.
- 1:24:27He's the right -hander they got from San Diego.
- 1:24:30This pitch misses inside. McCormick goes behind
- 1:24:342 -0 to Cleon Jones. He's walked two and he's
- 1:24:37struck out two in this ballgame. Mets have five
- 1:24:40hits and the Giants have one. Infield in. Harrelson
- 1:24:45leading down the line from third. Jones steps
- 1:24:49back for a moment. Here's a 2 -0 pitch. Swung
- 1:25:01on and it's fouled off his foot. Rolls back out
- 1:25:04to the mound. 2 -1 is the count to Cleon Jones.
- 1:25:12Boston Red Sox beat the Oakland A's today by
- 1:25:14a score of 8 -7. That's the fifth consecutive
- 1:25:16loss for Charlie. No other action going in the
- 1:25:25afternoon in the National League. There are three
- 1:25:27games in the National League tonight. Cubs are
- 1:25:31at Atlanta. There's a swing and a drive down
- 1:25:34the left field. Out out foul ball going into
- 1:25:36the Met bullpen. Ripped down there off the bat
- 1:25:40at Jones. That evens the count at 2 -2. Houston
- 1:25:44Astros are at St. Louis tonight. The Montreal
- 1:25:46Expos are at Los Angeles. Atlanta Braves, of
- 1:25:53course, have been scratching around for pitching.
- 1:25:55They signed Dick Farrell a few days ago. Never
- 1:25:57used him. before releasing him in favor of Ronnie
- 1:26:01Kline. They lost up Shaw and Reed through injuries.
- 1:26:062 -2 pitch, swung on it, on the ground to the
- 1:26:08right side, goes through for a base hit with
- 1:26:10a drawn in infield. It scores, Harrelson, and
- 1:26:12Jones is out with a single right and a run batted
- 1:26:15in. Well, that's the case of a ground ball that
- 1:26:17went through with the infield in that could have
- 1:26:19been fielded had the infield been back. Now Mets
- 1:26:24take a 3 -1 lead. Don Glenn Dunnan is two for
- 1:26:31two here in this game. He has scored one run,
- 1:26:39hitting cleanup, and manager Gil Hodges met batting
- 1:26:41order. Jones takes the lead at first. McCormick
- 1:26:46throws over. Not in time. Jones is back safely.
- 1:26:52Reberger continues to throw on the bullpen for
- 1:26:54the Giants. Again, a throw to first, and Jones
- 1:26:59is back safely. Boy, he stole two bases in the
- 1:27:02fourth inning. Stole second, stole third. So
- 1:27:06McCormick's trying to keep a short halter on
- 1:27:08Jones. He's running, and the pitch is swung on
- 1:27:12and popped up foul out of play down right field
- 1:27:15way. Goes into the seats. Jones comes back. Yeah,
- 1:27:24I just pushed on a lot of must -run plays. As
- 1:27:27this year, since he has speed on the ball club,
- 1:27:30meaning the runner takes off and it's up to the
- 1:27:33discretion of the batter. Sometimes called a
- 1:27:36run and hit as opposed to a hit and run where
- 1:27:38the batter should protect the runner. Throw to
- 1:27:42first, not in time. Slovota's on deck. Throw
- 1:27:54to first, Jones is back safely. This will be
- 1:28:06a strike one delivery. Foul back and out of play.
- 1:28:10It goes to two strikes now to Don Clinton. Jones
- 1:28:30leaves it first. McCovey holds against him there.
- 1:28:36Two -strike delivery. Swung on and fouled off.
- 1:28:39The count holds at two strikes. Come on, I'm
- 1:28:45San Diego. It'll be Tom Seaver for the New York
- 1:28:49Mets going after his fifth win of the year against
- 1:28:52Al Santorini of the San Diego Padres. Santorini
- 1:28:58from New Jersey and had a victory over the Mets
- 1:29:03last year. There's a throw to first. Jones is
- 1:29:07hung up. He was off and running. He's in a run
- 1:29:10down now. McCovey is catching him up, faking
- 1:29:12as he goes, and tags him out. So, Creon Jones
- 1:29:17is picked off. 1 -3 -4 -3 is the way the play
- 1:29:22went. So, Creon was finally picked, and there
- 1:29:29are two men out. He was off and moving, and so
- 1:29:32the left -hander. Made the play at first, and
- 1:29:36he was in the rundown. So there are two men out
- 1:29:40now. They count to Glenn Dillon to play the two
- 1:29:43strikes. The Mets are leading in the game by
- 1:29:46a score of 3 -1. That pitch is high for a ball.
- 1:30:071 -2 delivery. And it is hacked. Fair ball. 2
- 1:30:12-2. Dietz and McCormick each thought they might
- 1:30:15get a strike call. Each took a step toward the
- 1:30:17dugout. But Andy Olsen, the umpire behind the
- 1:30:21plate, said it was out of the strike zone. The
- 1:30:23count evens at 2 -2. Now swinging a foul ball
- 1:30:29off and out of play. Eddie Yost comes way down
- 1:30:33off the coaching lines to retrieve that foul
- 1:30:35ball. Now McCormick sets up, looks for the sign,
- 1:30:51goes into the motion, 2 -2 pitch. Below, and
- 1:30:55it's off the glove of B, throwing away, and McCormick's
- 1:30:58gone full now with two men out, nobody on base.
- 1:31:11Bud Harrelson tripled and was brought home by
- 1:31:14Cleon Jones. To give the Mets that third run.
- 1:31:17Here's the payoff pitch. It's fouled off. Count
- 1:31:21continues. That's 3 -2 to Don Clendenin. Clendenin
- 1:31:29spent most of his Major League career with the
- 1:31:31Pittsburgh Pirates, and he used to wear the early
- 1:31:34New York Mets out. He was a terror for the Mets
- 1:31:37in the Pittsburgh uniform. Here's the payoff
- 1:31:42pitch. Oh, hi, Sally. Come in. Oh, hi, Dolly.
- 1:32:08Is Andy home? Sure. Andy, Sally Stern's here
- 1:32:10to see you. Hi, Sally. What's up? Andy, if you've
- 1:32:13got a minute, I need some of that Granatelli
- 1:32:16advice about cars. Our son Larry is driving to
- 1:32:19Florida. I want to have the car checked out,
- 1:32:21but I don't know what should be done. Well, Sally,
- 1:32:24before anyone takes a car on a trip, they should
- 1:32:26have their service station check tire pressures,
- 1:32:28headlights, windshield rubber blades, and have
- 1:32:30them change the oil. Don't forget the STP, Andy.
- 1:32:33Dolly, how could I? Especially when you're on
- 1:32:35the road, Sally. Higher speeds can mean greater
- 1:32:37engine wear, but STP oil treatment helps eliminate
- 1:32:40friction, heat, and wear. It clings to metal
- 1:32:43parts and lubricates better than motor oil alone
- 1:32:45ever could. So you run smoother, cooler, quieter,
- 1:32:48longer. I recommend adding a can of STP whenever
- 1:32:51you change oil. Thanks, Andy. Is there anything
- 1:32:53else? Well, I could tell Larry about a little
- 1:32:55place I know in Miami where all the girls...
- 1:32:57Andy! STP! This is the New York Mets Baseball
- 1:33:14Network. You're listening to New York Mets Baseball
- 1:33:16on WKAJ -FM 102 .3 in Saratoga Springs, New York,
- 1:33:20the home of the New York Mets. This is Lindsey
- 1:33:24Nelson with Ralph Cantor and Bob Murphy at Candlestick
- 1:33:27Park in San Francisco. Al Lanier up. Ryan's first
- 1:33:31pitch is low for a ball. Lanier's been up one
- 1:33:35time and he had a base hit. Ryan delivers. And
- 1:33:42it's in there for a call strike. One and one.
- 1:33:44Ryan has struck out three and he's walked five
- 1:33:46here today. He walked three batters in the bottom
- 1:33:49of the fourth. One -one delivery. Swung on it
- 1:33:56in the air to center field. And A .G. is going
- 1:33:58back. He's there. Makes the catch. A .G. having
- 1:34:04a little trouble as he got back through the wind
- 1:34:05blowing out rather stiffly out there. He got
- 1:34:08back set and then sort of ducked his head away
- 1:34:11as he grabbed it. But there is one man out, and
- 1:34:14Mike McCormick's coming up. Been up one time
- 1:34:17and sacrificed, so officially he has not been
- 1:34:20charged with a time at bat. Jim McAndrew is walking
- 1:34:24from the bullpen area down toward the dugout
- 1:34:26now. He is scheduled to pitch the Saturday game
- 1:34:28for the Mets against the San Diego Padres. Jim
- 1:34:31McAndrew. Pitch to the left -hand batter. Swung
- 1:34:36on it on the ground. And it is taken at second
- 1:34:39by Weiss and played the first inside. Weiss had
- 1:34:42the range way over in the hole between first
- 1:34:44and second to glove that ground ball. Play on
- 1:34:47to get McCormick. Two away. Bobby Barnes will
- 1:34:50be the better. Struck out and grounded out to
- 1:34:52drive and a run. The original Met is here this
- 1:34:57afternoon. The first man ever selected by the
- 1:35:00New York Mets in their expansion draft before
- 1:35:03the 1962 season. Toby Landry. He's in business
- 1:35:08here in the greater San Francisco area. There's
- 1:35:13a swing and a foul ball back and out of play.
- 1:35:19His younger son recently underwent an operation
- 1:35:24for the amputation of a leg. Here's a pitch to
- 1:35:30Bobby Bond. Swung on and missed. A malignant
- 1:35:35tumor was discovered in his ankle, and the amputation
- 1:35:39followed. Two men out, nobody on base. This will
- 1:35:45be a two -strike pitch to Bobby Bond. Nolan Ryan
- 1:35:48delivers, and it misses low and away. So it's
- 1:35:52one and two. When Landreth was selected as the
- 1:35:57first nut in the expansion draft, it was an interesting
- 1:36:02situation. Here's a pitch. Swung on and missed.
- 1:36:06Struck him out to retire the side. We'll finish
- 1:36:09that story later. Four strikeouts for Nolan Ryan.
- 1:36:13No runs, no hits, no errors, none left. And at
- 1:36:16the end of five full innings of play, the score
- 1:36:18is the Mets 3 and the Giants 1. For fast personal

- 1:37:27draft selection, and somebody said to Casey Stengel,
- 1:37:30the manager of the Mets then, why did you select
- 1:37:33a catcher as your first choice? Casey thought
- 1:37:36about it and said, because if you don't have
- 1:37:38a catcher, you have all pass balls, which seemed
- 1:37:42as good a reason as any. Hobie was traded from
- 1:37:47the New York Mets to Baltimore. And another interesting
- 1:37:54thing that happened is his older son, Gary, had
- 1:37:56been around the ball club, and so he went to
- 1:37:59him when he was traded and said, son, I've been
- 1:38:01traded, and I think you ought to know it. And
- 1:38:03the boy said, oh, I know that. I've known it
- 1:38:05a couple of days. I was in the dugout, and I
- 1:38:08heard Mr. Single talking on the phone to Mr.
- 1:38:10White, and I knew you were traded, but I didn't
- 1:38:12tell you because you told me never to repeat
- 1:38:14anything I heard in the dugout or in the locker
- 1:38:16room. Ryan Swoboda's up. Here's Mike McCormick
- 1:38:24with the pitch. Swung on and fouled off. Bovoda
- 1:38:31with a batting average now of .244. Through five
- 1:38:43innings, the Mets three runs, six hits, no errors.
- 1:38:46Giant one run, one hit, no errors. Breaking pitch
- 1:38:54right in there. Good curveball for a called strike,
- 1:38:57too, to Sloboda. Sloboda! There's a swing and
- 1:39:08a foul ball. Count holes at two strikes. Candlestick
- 1:39:20Park. Which will be considerably remodeled. Of
- 1:39:28course, in the next year. Which already has an
- 1:39:32artificial turf. Two -strike pitch. Outside.
- 1:39:39One and two. Of course, the big problem at Candlestick
- 1:39:43through the years has been the wind. The giant
- 1:39:46organization has become a little touchy about
- 1:39:49it also. Here's the one -two pitch. Swung on
- 1:39:52it on the ground up the middle. It's a base hit
- 1:39:55for Ron Swivota. Fielded out there by Bonds and
- 1:39:57played back. So it's a leadoff hit. Joe Poi is
- 1:40:02coming up. He's been up twice. He's had two hits.
- 1:40:05He's driven in two runs and he's stolen two bases.
- 1:40:09That was base hit number seven from the Mets
- 1:40:11in this game. Some members of the Giant organization
- 1:40:15were saying yesterday that they hear some of
- 1:40:18the comments around. that you would think that
- 1:40:21the Giants brought the win with them when they
- 1:40:24came out from New York. They would like to point
- 1:40:27out that he's always been here. Here's a pitch
- 1:40:30low for a ball. Frank Reberger gets up to throw
- 1:40:39again now in the Giant bullpen. The Mets are
- 1:40:41leading by a score of 3 -1. McCormick checks
- 1:40:48the runner at first. He's running. Here's a swing
- 1:40:51and a ground ball foul. Off and out of play.
- 1:40:53That'll bring Swivota back. Jones was picked
- 1:40:57off by McCormick in the last inning. With a considerable
- 1:41:03amount of speed on the ball club, Gil Hodges
- 1:41:07has made the Mets this year a running ball club.
- 1:41:11They run at the slightest provocation. Here's
- 1:41:18a pitch low and inside. Dug out neatly with a
- 1:41:20one -hand stab by catcher Dick Dietz. Speed is
- 1:41:27a quality much to be desired in almost any sport
- 1:41:30you can think of. Old baseball men used to say
- 1:41:34it's the one quality that will serve you well
- 1:41:36on offense or defense in baseball. Go to first
- 1:41:39and throw boaters back safely. There is nobody
- 1:41:47out. This will be a 2 -1 pitch. Another try at
- 1:41:52first base, but Svoboda's back save it. Svoboda
- 1:41:55was out there with a short lead, sort of rocking,
- 1:41:56and McCormick threw over. If you're going to
- 1:42:01go, 2 -1's an excellent pitch to go on. It doesn't
- 1:42:05go, but it's ripped up the alley and left center
- 1:42:08by Foy. It'll be a base hit, one hop, and over
- 1:42:10the wall, a ground rule double. It hops over
- 1:42:14the wall. Svoboda's being held up at third. And
- 1:42:18it's a double for Boyd. As said, Ball hit way
- 1:42:22out there. The edge of the AstroTurf. He bounded
- 1:42:25over the left field fence. It takes a high hop
- 1:42:29coming off the artificial turf. Here comes Clyde
- 1:42:32King, the giant manager. There goes the sign
- 1:42:34to the bullpen. That's all for McCormick. Reburger
- 1:42:37will be coming in. The Mets will have runners
- 1:42:40at second and third with nobody out. And Al Weiss
- 1:42:43will be coming up. But we're going to get a pitching
- 1:42:45change right here. Interesting thing about that
- 1:42:51play was the fact that Lee Weier, the umpire
- 1:42:56at third, was moving around into position for
- 1:42:59the possible play there. He looked up and saw
- 1:43:03the ball over the fence, but he didn't know whether
- 1:43:05it got over there on the fly or got over there
- 1:43:07on the hop. So he gave no sign of any guy until
- 1:43:10he got some assistance. Reburger has arrived
- 1:43:21at the mound now. McCormick has gone to the dugout.
- 1:43:30Manager Clyde King's going back. McCormick worked.
- 1:43:36innings and faced two betters here in the sixth.
- 1:43:39Charged so far with three runs on, eight hits,
- 1:43:42struck out two and walked two. Rehberger is coming
- 1:43:47in to make his eighth appearance of the year.
- 1:43:50He had three starts. He worked against the Mets
- 1:43:55in the first game of this series for two innings,
- 1:43:57gave up no runs on, one hit. His overall record
- 1:44:00is no wins and one loss. At San Diego last year,
- 1:44:04he had a record of one win and two losses. He's
- 1:44:07from Caldwell, Idaho. As he warms up to check
- 1:44:10us out on scores, here's Bob Murphy. All right,
- 1:44:13Lindsey, the other action in the National League
- 1:44:15will be tonight, Chicago playing at Atlanta.
- 1:44:18In the ballgame, Billy Williams will play his
- 1:44:201 ,000th consecutive game and become the only
- 1:44:24National League player in history to play that
- 1:44:26many ballgames without missing one. Houston at
- 1:44:29St. Louis, the Astros trying to snap an eight
- 1:44:31-game losing streak. All eight losses on this
- 1:44:34road trip. And Montreal and the Dodgers play
- 1:44:37in Los Angeles. In the American League this afternoon
- 1:44:40with Rico Peppersulli, George Scott, and Billy
- 1:44:43Canigliero all hitting home runs. The Red Sox
- 1:44:46shaded Oakland 8 -7. Gary Peters the winner and
- 1:44:50Jim Rowland the loser. For Oakland, Philippa
- 1:44:53Liu and Frank Fernandez hit home runs. Final
- 1:44:56score, Boston 8 and Oakland 7. The A's now have
- 1:44:59lost five in a row. Luis Teon picked up his fourth
- 1:45:04win of the year as Minnesota beat Cleveland 4
- 1:45:06-1. Hargan was the loser. Killebrew, Allier,
- 1:45:09and Cardenas hit home runs for Minnesota and
- 1:45:11Greg Nettles for Cleveland. Chicago 4, Baltimore
- 1:45:143. They're in the seventh inning and being held
- 1:45:16up because of rain. Milwaukee and Washington
- 1:45:19tonight. Detroit and Kansas City tonight. And
- 1:45:21now we have a pinch hitter coming up and to tell
- 1:45:23you all about it and pick up the action, Lindsay
- 1:45:24Nelson. All right, Bob Murphy, manager Gil Hodges,
- 1:45:28wastes no time in going to his left -hand batter.
- 1:45:30Now that there's a right -hand pitcher out there,
- 1:45:32it's Boswell batting for White. They're runners
- 1:45:34at second and third for the Mets. The Giants
- 1:45:38play the infield in, and there's nobody out.
- 1:45:40The Mets are leading by a score of 3 -1. Here's
- 1:45:42the pitch now to Boswell, and it hits him. He
- 1:45:46is a hit batsman, and he's going down to first
- 1:45:48base. That one was tight and came all the way
- 1:45:50back to the screen. Of course, the ball is dead
- 1:45:52when it hits him, and there's no advance possible
- 1:45:54for baserunners who hold. And Boswell goes to
- 1:45:57first, a hit batsman. He's all right. Duffy Dyer
- 1:46:01comes up with the bases loaded. Dyer has been
- 1:46:08up twice without a hit. He is not yet better
- 1:46:11than a run this season. He's hitting 200. The
- 1:46:15Giants leave the infield in. Marie Berger with
- 1:46:23the pitch, working straight away. And it's low
- 1:46:26for a ball. The Mets making a bid to break it
- 1:46:30open here now in the top half of the sixth inning.
- 1:46:33They're leading by a score of 3 -1, but they're
- 1:46:35in a spot where a base hit can do their cause
- 1:46:37a lot of good now. Runners at first, second,
- 1:46:40and third. Marie Berger with the pitch. And it's
- 1:46:47in there for a call strike to Duffy Dyer, 1 -1.
- 1:46:52Nolan Ryan is waiting on deck. Ron Svoboda is
- 1:46:55the runner at third. Joe Foy is at second. And
- 1:46:57Boswell is at first. Dietz flashes a sign out
- 1:47:08to the lanky right hander who doesn't get it
- 1:47:10and backs off the mound. Now he's set again.
- 1:47:211 -1 pitch. Way outside. Catcher Dietz has to
- 1:47:26move out there on one knee to glove it. It's
- 1:47:27two balls and a strike to Dyer. Giant in field
- 1:47:32end. Jim Johnson, Frank Lindsey up and throwing
- 1:47:36in the bullpen for the Giants. A left -hander,
- 1:47:38Johnson. A right -hander, Lindsey. Two -run pitch.
- 1:47:42Swung on and tipped back in the glove of Dietz.
- 1:47:45It's 2 -2. Nolan Ryan starts to... Peel off the
- 1:47:50jacket now in the on -deck circle. Bright, clear,
- 1:47:54and sunny here in San Francisco with the wind
- 1:47:56blowing out toward right field. Here's the 2
- 1:48:08-2 pitch. Swung on and on the ground is short.
- 1:48:12Play at the plate. The force is accomplished.
- 1:48:14He's out. There is no relay. As Swoboda... was
- 1:48:19sliding in, he hooked Deetz, and a call is being
- 1:48:22made, I believe, to call out Duffy Dyer at first
- 1:48:26for interference of Swoboda on Deetz as he was
- 1:48:30getting ready to go to first. Andy Olsen made
- 1:48:32the call as Swoboda went sliding in. Deetz had
- 1:48:36taken the throw the force was on and stepped
- 1:48:38out a step in front of the plate, but Swoboda
- 1:48:42hooked him, tripped him, and Olsen is signaling
- 1:48:46down there that... Dyer is also out. Now, Leslie
- 1:48:50Dyer is slowly coming off the bag. Yogi Berra
- 1:48:53is beside him, and here comes Jill Hodges out
- 1:48:56now. You want to discuss this a little further
- 1:48:58with Andy Olsen. Olsen called Dyer out at first
- 1:49:07because of the interference by Swoboda on the
- 1:49:10play at the plate. The fourth play was 6 -2.
- 1:49:14It was from Lanier to Dietz. So now Hodges and
- 1:49:18Andy Olsen are discussing it. There are two men
- 1:49:26out. Runners at second and third. And pitcher
- 1:49:31Nolan Ryan is coming up. The Mets are leading
- 1:49:343 -1. He's a right -hand batter. Ryan is one
- 1:49:56for nine at the plate this year. He's hitting
- 1:49:58111. Infield, of course, dropped back to normal
- 1:50:05depth now by the Giants with two men out. Med
- 1:50:08runners lead at second and third. Reberger off
- 1:50:13the stretch, and it's high for a ball. Calls
- 1:50:22time. Goes to the mound. Looking into the dugout
- 1:50:24as he does. Willie McCovey. Calls time. Goes
- 1:50:28to the mound. Catcher Dick Dietz goes to the
- 1:50:30mound. 1 -0 is the count. Nolan Ryan, meanwhile,
- 1:50:40has been called on by Eddie Yost. Signed man
- 1:50:47at third. The runner at third has excellent speed.
- 1:50:54And keep in mind, in the first game of this series,
- 1:50:56that Bud Harrelson stole home. Here's a pitch
- 1:51:00that is high for a ball. I read it was in Los
- 1:51:04Angeles that Harrelson stole home. 2 -0 the count
- 1:51:08to Nolan Rodgers. He looks down to Eddie Yost.
- 1:51:13There's always the possibility of a two -odd
- 1:51:16squeeze with a circumstance like this. Not a
- 1:51:19probability at all. That pitch is in for a called
- 1:51:22strike. It's two and one. That's three in the
- 1:51:31giant one. Two men out, two men on. Now Reberger
- 1:51:42backs off the rubber, steps up again. He's working
- 1:51:49straight away. Here's the 2 -1 pitch. Swung on
- 1:51:52and missed. It's 2 -2. Tommy Agee is next in
- 1:51:59the Met order. We're in the top of the sixth.
- 1:52:15Ah, 2 -2 pitch. Swung on and fouled off back
- 1:52:19at first out of play. If you're scoring the ball
- 1:52:27game, catcher Dick Deets gets credit for the
- 1:52:31put -out on the forced play, and also he gets
- 1:52:35credit for the put -out on the interference call.
- 1:52:41This will be a 2 -2 pitch now to Nolan Ryan.
- 1:52:46Lowe, the count is full at 3 -2. Joe Foy at third,
- 1:52:55Ken Boswell at second. Here's the payoff pitch
- 1:53:05to Ryan. Swung on it in the air to right, and
- 1:53:09Henderson is lifting back, flips the glasses,
- 1:53:11edge of the warning track, makes the catch. The
- 1:53:30finest in Italian cuisine and a wide array of
- 1:53:39steaks, chops, and seafood awaits your dining
- 1:53:42pleasure at Mangino's Restaurant, located on
- 1:53:44the south end of Saratoga Lake. But there's a
- 1:53:47big difference between just ordinary Italian
- 1:53:49or American cuisine and Mangino's fine foods.
- 1:53:53At Mangino's, your order is never prepared hours
- 1:53:55before. Mangino's realize that good food cannot
- 1:53:59be hurried, and they ask you to give them a little
- 1:54:01time to prepare it properly. All dishes are prepared
- 1:54:04to your order when your order is placed, never
- 1:54:07before, and it hasn't been simmering away for
- 1:54:09hours or minutes. And that's the big difference
- 1:54:12at Mangino's. Why not enjoy eating Italian food
- 1:54:15the way it should be savored? And done at Mangino's
- 1:54:18Restaurant, located on the south end of Saratoga
- 1:54:20Lake on Route 9P, just two miles from Route 9.
- 1:54:23A complete line of Italian specialties are served
- 1:54:26to tempt the palate, and their steaks and chops
- 1:54:28and seafood are equally as delightful. Mangino's
- 1:54:32Restaurant, the home of truly fine foods, Route
- 1:54:349P, the south end of Saratoga Lake. Ken Boswell
- 1:54:40stays in the ballgame for the Mets at second
- 1:54:42base as expected. Nolan Ryan will be facing Ron
- 1:54:47Hunt here in the bottom of the sixth. Ryan has
- 1:54:50struck out four and walked five. Now on one run
- 1:54:54on one hit. Hunt so far has walked and slid to
- 1:54:58right. average for the season stands right now
- 1:55:11at 393. And pitch. Low for a ball. Ken Henderson
- 1:55:38is on deck. 1 -0 pitch. In there for a call strike,
- 1:55:47it's 1 -1. There's a fastball high and away,
- 1:56:04and it goes to two balls and one strike to Hunt.
- 1:56:12The Mets got two runs in the top of the first
- 1:56:14inning here today. Giants got one in the bottom
- 1:56:17of the third. The Mets added another in the top
- 1:56:20of the fifth. This is a breaking pitch low. Three
- 1:56:26balls and a strike to Ron Hunt, trying to work
- 1:56:29out a walk. Flicks down to Ozzie Virgil, the
- 1:56:32sideman at third. 3 -1 pitch. High walking. That
- 1:56:46is the sixth base on balls issued by Nolan Ryan.
- 1:56:56It is the third inning in which he has issued
- 1:56:59a leadoff walk. Bob Taylor leading off in the
- 1:57:03third inning, and Taylor later scored the giant
- 1:57:05run. It's Henderson up, and he's followed by
- 1:57:13McCovey. Off the stretch, Ryan Fitts. Low for
- 1:57:20a ball. Henderson. Walked as a leadoff man in
- 1:57:27the fourth inning. He grounded into a double
- 1:57:31play in the first inning. holds against Hunt
- 1:57:41at first. Pitch is swung on and missed. It's
- 1:57:45one and one. The Mets three, the Giants one.
- 1:57:51In the bottom of the sixth inning at Candlestick
- 1:57:53Park in San Francisco. Henderson is a switch
- 1:58:01hitter. He's batting left against Ryan. Which
- 1:58:08misses out of way. So it's two balls and a strike.
- 1:58:18Ryan has struggled in getting the ball over the
- 1:58:21plate today. Two on delivery. Swung on and popped
- 1:58:27up. It's an infield pop near the mound. Foy moves
- 1:58:30over and calls, and school baseman Joe Foy puts
- 1:58:32it away. Unholds it first, and here comes McCubby.
- 1:58:41The New York Mets start into their shift. That
- 1:58:43means third baseman Floyd moves over on the second
- 1:58:49base side of the bag. Ken Boswell takes the station
- 1:58:52about five steps deep on the right field turf.
- 1:58:57Ben Dunnan holds against the runner. Shortstop
- 1:59:00Bud Harrison moves over near the bag at second.
- 1:59:08And this pitch, high. for a ball. The Mets three
- 1:59:15runs, eight hits. The Giants one run, one hit.
- 1:59:22Pitch to McCovey. Swung on and fouled back. It's
- 1:59:25one and one. It's two previous times up today
- 1:59:34with the shift on. On each occasion, McCovey
- 1:59:37has hit a ground ball to point. On the second
- 1:59:42base side of the bag. This is a 1 -1 pitch. And
- 1:59:48it's hit deep to center. It is way back, but
- 1:59:50A .G. has it lined up. And makes the catch in
- 1:59:54center field. That hollow at the second goes
- 1:59:56back to first. A .G.'s throw is to first, but
- 1:59:59not in time. So McCovey is out on a fly ball
- 2:00:03to deep center. And Dick Deets is coming up with
- 2:00:07two men out. East has struck out and walked so
- 2:00:13far. East is a right -hand batter. Nolan Ryan
- 2:00:30checks the runner at first and deals a pitch
- 2:00:32that's fouled back. It's strike one. the bottom
- 2:00:52of the sixth inning. Breaking pitch is high.
- 2:00:58One and one. Ryan hasn't been able to get the
- 2:01:00curveball over today. He struck out four and
- 2:01:07walked six. That miss is high and away. So he
- 2:01:17goes behind the deeps now. Two balls and a strike.
- 2:01:27Ron hunts the runner at first. 2 -1 delivery.
- 2:01:33Foul back off the screen and out of play. Count
- 2:01:36holds at 2 -2 now. Ron takes a moment before
- 2:01:54stepping up. Hunt takes the lead at first base.
- 2:02:01But you swing on and miss. Ryan strikes out to
- 2:02:03each for his fifth strikeout of the ballgame.
- 2:02:06And the side is retired. No runs, no hits, no
- 2:02:10errors. A walk and one left at the end of six
- 2:02:12full innings of play. The score is the Mets three
- 2:02:15and the Giants one. Some people say the dollar
- 2:02:19doesn't buy much anymore. But then some people
- 2:02:22have never been to McDonald's. McDonald's hamburgers
- 2:02:25are 100 % beef. We never add filler. So how can
- 2:02:30we sell our hamburgers at such low prices? Well,
- 2:02:33we serve over two million a day. That brings
- 2:02:36the cost down a little. And even if it didn't,
- 2:02:39we wouldn't change. That's why McDonald's is
- 2:02:43your kind of place. There's a kid inside all
- 2:02:51of us. A kid who remembers the good taste of
- 2:02:54simple things. We think a lot of that kid at
- 2:02:58McDonald's. We use Idaho potatoes because they
- 2:03:01make the best French fries. And we cook them
- 2:03:04at exactly the right temperature to make them
- 2:03:06crisp and golden. If you remember the good taste
- 2:03:10of simple things, McDonald's is your kind of
- 2:03:13place. ...throws in his warm -ups. We'll pause
- 2:03:33for station identification. This is the New York
- 2:03:36Mets Baseball Network. You're listening to New
- 2:03:38York Mets Baseball on WKAJ -FM 102 .3 in Saratoga
- 2:03:42Springs, New York, the home of the New York Mets.
- 2:03:47Bob Murphy with Lindsey Nelson and Ralph Kanner,
- 2:03:49seven winning at Candlestick Park, Mets leading
- 2:03:523 -1, and Tommy Agee leads off in the seventh.
- 2:03:56Tommy O for three this afternoon, twice has flied
- 2:03:59to right and has bounced to short. And the pitchers
- 2:04:02take an outside ball one. They have resumed play
- 2:04:07in Chicago after being held up because of rain
- 2:04:10in the seventh inning. Drive hit deep to left
- 2:04:15field. Way back. It's going. And there it goes.
- 2:04:18A home run. A line drive home run for Tommy Agee.
- 2:04:23His second round cover of the season. The Mets
- 2:04:28lead 4 -1. Joe Foy, Leon Jones, and Tommy Agee
- 2:04:38have all celebrated their return to the lineup
- 2:04:40here this afternoon. Foy single two runs in,
- 2:04:43Jones single to run in, and now Tommy Agee has
- 2:04:46hit a home run. Tommy's second home run, the
- 2:04:49other home run was off. Lowell Palmer of the
- 2:04:52Phillies, he hit it to center field. This was
- 2:04:55a hard line drive, pulled a straightaway left
- 2:04:58field. Tommy Agee with the home run keeps his
- 2:05:12streak alive. He now sits safely in 11 straight
- 2:05:15ballgames. Bud Harrelson has something in his
- 2:05:22eye, and trainer Tom McKenna comes out to try
- 2:05:25and get it out for him. Harrelson tripled to
- 2:05:29right center his last time at bat, and for Bud
- 2:05:31it was his fourth three -base out of the year.
- 2:05:38That 11 -game hitting streak matches the Mets
- 2:05:41club record. Bud Harrelson now steps in to face
- 2:05:47Frank Reburger. Here's the pitch on the way.
- 2:05:51And a fly ball in the air to short left field.
- 2:05:54Coming in, coming in. Bob Taylor and the left
- 2:05:56fielder has it for the out. Mets leading 4 -1
- 2:06:02in the 7th inning. Cleon Jones coming up. Cleon
- 2:06:06single to right. His last time at bat, driving
- 2:06:09home Bud Harrelson after Bud's triple. Cleon
- 2:06:13was later picked off by Mike McCormick. New York
- 2:06:16now, four runs on nine hits, no errors. And San
- 2:06:20Francisco, one run, one hit, and no errors. The
- 2:06:25only giant hit drove in a run. Jim Johnson, a
- 2:06:32left -hander. Frank Lindsay, a right -hander,
- 2:06:33working in the giant bullpen. A swing and a miss
- 2:06:36on a breaking ball, strike one. Don Condon is
- 2:06:42on deck and then runs for both of them. Breeze
- 2:06:47blowing from left across toward right. Giants
- 2:06:50in the outfield playing Cleon a step toward left.
- 2:06:54And a half swing he held up in time. It broke
- 2:06:57low and away. One ball, one strike to Jones.
- 2:07:01Yogi Berra coaching at first base. Eddie Yost
- 2:07:03at third. Now the 1 -1 delivery. Low and outside.
- 2:07:09It's two balls and a strike. The home run by
- 2:07:19Agee, the first hit off Reberger since he came
- 2:07:21in. Now it's low outside, ball three, three and
- 2:07:24one. Reberger, tall, thin right -hander. Ground
- 2:07:38ball hits slowly, racing for it McCovey. Now
- 2:07:40he throws the ball, bounces, can't make a play.
- 2:07:43Jones is on with an infield hit. A slow bouncer
- 2:07:46in the no -man's land. McCovey leaving the bag,
- 2:07:50angling toward the mound, fielded the ball. He's
- 2:07:52left -handed. And as a result, after getting
- 2:07:54the ball in his glove, he just was not in position
- 2:07:56to throw the ball to first base with anything
- 2:07:58on it. And Cleon beats it out for a base hit.
- 2:08:04Cleon's second hit of the game. He now has two
- 2:08:06for three and a walk. Don Quindone on the batter.
- 2:08:09Quindone has two for three and his last time
- 2:08:12up. He hit a brutal line drive that was caught
- 2:08:15by Ledeer. Was it so hard to knock Lanier down
- 2:08:18when he caught it? Now Reberger off the stretch.
- 2:08:24And the pitch thrown, low outside, ball one.
- 2:08:33Ron Swoboda occupies the on -deck circle. But
- 2:08:39Denon has a lot of power. Right -hand hitter,
- 2:08:43they play him around the left. And a curve on
- 2:08:46the outside corner, a strike, one ball and one
- 2:08:48strike. The White Sox got two runs in the seventh
- 2:08:56inning after play resumed. The White Sox now
- 2:08:59lead the Orioles 6 -3 as they go to the eighth
- 2:09:02inning. And a ground ball hit toward the middle,
- 2:09:05running forward as Hattie smothers it, throws
- 2:09:07the second out! A ground ball hit right up the
- 2:09:20middle of the diamond. Hunt left his feet, made
- 2:09:22a head first to dive through the air, smuttled
- 2:09:25the ball, and while stretched out on the ground,
- 2:09:27flipped the ball to the nearest second for the
- 2:09:30fourth play on Cleon Jones. Well, Don Condon
- 2:09:34very easily could have four for four here today.
- 2:09:37Last two times in bat, he has had bases taken
- 2:09:40away from him. Ron Hunter set quite a series
- 2:09:47against his old teammates. Ron Swoboda has walked,
- 2:09:53bounced to short, and singled to center, one
- 2:09:54for two. Mets leading 4 -1, top of the seventh
- 2:10:00inning. Now the pitch by Reberger. Swing and
- 2:10:05a miss, strike one. At least one hit on every
- 2:10:17inning of the ballgame with the exception of
- 2:10:18the second. Down comes the pitch. And a hard
- 2:10:23slider on the outside. Corner strike two. New
- 2:10:33York four runs on ten hits. The Giants one run
- 2:10:36on one hit. Now Reberger makes the stop. There
- 2:10:40goes the runner. The pitch is over. Strike three
- 2:10:42called. When Dutton was running, but Sloboda
- 2:10:44is called out on strike. Tad retired one run.
- 2:10:48There were two hits. No errors. One left off.
- 2:10:54Now in the middle of the seventh inning. The
- 2:10:58New York Mets four and the San Francisco Giants
- 2:11:00one. That's returned to Shea Stadium to start
- 2:11:05their homestand on Tuesday night. The Dodgers
- 2:11:07are in town. Eight games on the next homestand,
- 2:11:10three with the Dodgers, three with the Giants,
- 2:11:12and two with Montreal. Giants are at Shea Stadium
- 2:11:15next weekend, Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday

- 2:12:18service charge to cover the cost of handling
- 2:12:20and mailing. Jim Davenport faces Nolan Ryan in
- 2:12:32the last of the seventh inning. Ryan out of his
- 2:12:36windup fires the express that it's inside ball
- 2:12:38wide. The tail end of the batting order coming
- 2:12:41up. Clyde King has Frank Lindsey working in the
- 2:12:45bullpen. Davenport has flied to right and reached
- 2:12:50on a walk. Curve over the inside corner. A strike.
- 2:12:54One ball and one strike. Al Lanier has the only
- 2:12:58hit off Nolan Ryan. He's single. Back in the
- 2:13:01third inning. To help build the Giants' run.
- 2:13:05The 1 -1 delivery. Line to the air. The right
- 2:13:07center. Running hard. Tommy Agee. And he runs
- 2:13:10it down. He didn't have the ball in the pocket
- 2:13:30of his glove. He had it right in the fingertips.
- 2:13:33It wouldn't stay there. It hit and rolled toward
- 2:13:35the fence. Davenport is on second with a double.
- 2:13:42Giants have their second hit of the ball game,
- 2:13:44and it brings up Bob Taylor, the left fielder.
- 2:13:47He walked back in the third and later scored
- 2:13:49for the Giants. His second time at bat, he went
- 2:13:52down swinging. That's the second base hit. Foul.
- 2:13:58Called it back over the screen by Bob Taylor
- 2:14:00in the counter -strike one. Bob Taylor is a rookie.
- 2:14:05Quite a backlog of minor league experience. He
- 2:14:07spent eight years in the minor leagues. Last
- 2:14:10year, he had 331 in the Pacific Coast League.
- 2:14:14Steve Whittaker is around the bat rack. Al Lanier
- 2:14:18is on deck, and then the pitcher, Reberger, is
- 2:14:20scheduled up. So Steve Whittaker is around the
- 2:14:23bat rack. It's in for a call strike to Bob Taylor.
- 2:14:28Nolan Ryan with a two -strike count. Today's
- 2:14:33game, Ryan has walked six and struck out five.
- 2:14:37Allowed one run, two bases. Now Nolan makes the
- 2:14:43one -second stop. And the pitch on the way, fouled
- 2:14:46on the left -field line, no play. He hit that
- 2:14:50one late, trying to get around on the fastball.
- 2:15:00His first start this year, he shut out the Phillies.
- 2:15:02He allowed one hit, a single by Denny Doyle.
- 2:15:05His second start, he allowed two hits and lost
- 2:15:08the game 1 -0. Bob Taylor waiting. Swing and
- 2:15:15a miss. He got him. Strikeout number six for
- 2:15:18Nolan Ryan. Now Hal Lanier will be coming on
- 2:15:25to hit. Nolan Lanier is being called back. And
- 2:15:30Steve Whitaker is going to bat for Hal Lanier.
- 2:15:33This is Steve Whitaker hitting for Lanier. Lanier
- 2:15:43has been hitting the ball well. Bobby Heiss goes
- 2:15:49down to the bullpen to warm up his arm. He'll
- 2:15:52take over his short. Lanier had the only hit
- 2:15:55off Ryan until the double by Davenport here in
- 2:15:57the seventh. When we saw Whitaker around the
- 2:16:01bat rack, we first thought he would be hitting
- 2:16:03for the pitcher. Bob Berta has come out on deck
- 2:16:12now. Swing and a miss by Whitaker. Strike one.
- 2:16:16Berta has come out on deck to bat for Reberger.
- 2:16:28And up in pitching position. Delivers. Swing
- 2:16:31and a miss. Ryan's expressed. Nolan's just reaching
- 2:16:34back now and firing that fastball. Nolan now
- 2:16:40has walked six and struck out six. His first
- 2:16:43start this year, he fanned 15. And in the second
- 2:16:45start, he struck out five. For his career, he
- 2:16:49has averaged a little better than a strikeout
- 2:16:52in an inning. Now the pitch. Outside and a high.
- 2:16:54One ball and two strikes. Met pitching staff
- 2:17:00came into this ballgame with an amazing staff
- 2:17:03earned run average of 2 .4. Gets one ball and
- 2:17:11two strikes. Down comes the pitch. He's struck
- 2:17:14him out swinging. Noah Ryan with his fastball.
- 2:17:18Gets Steve Whitaker. That's number seven. Now
- 2:17:24Bob Berta. No, it's going to be Don Mason. Berta
- 2:17:28is called back. He was out on the on -deck circle,
- 2:17:32but now Clyde King calls him back. And Don Mason
- 2:17:36will be the pinch hitter. Mason has been up six
- 2:17:43times this year without a hit. So Don Mason.
- 2:17:57Bats for Frank Reburger. The Giants will put
- 2:17:59a new pitcher in the ballgame in the eighth inning.
- 2:18:08Mason, a left -hand hitter, was in 104 ballgames
- 2:18:11with the Giants last year and batted .228. Two
- 2:18:18outs and one on, last of the seventh. Mets lead
- 2:18:214 -1. Now Ryan brings the right arm around. And
- 2:18:25a fastball is high. Ball one. Bobby Bonds, the
- 2:18:29on -deck hitter. Davenport on second. He doubled
- 2:18:37leading off the inning. Outside and high. Ball
- 2:18:40two. Nolan Ryan gets behind Mason. Two balls
- 2:18:45and no strikes. Four of Ryan's seven strikeouts
- 2:18:51have come in the last three innings. But 2 -0
- 2:18:57delivery. Ball three up high, three and nothing.
- 2:19:00Bobby bonds the on -deck batter. Mets leading
- 2:19:074 -1. Ryan behind on the count, three balls and
- 2:19:16no strikes to the pinch batter, Don Mason. 3
- 2:19:19-0 delivery. He's taking all away. It's high
- 2:19:21ball four. So now Bobby Bonds, a long ball hitter,
- 2:19:26comes up. That's the seventh walk. Seven walks
- 2:19:36and seven strikeouts. Bobby Bonds has gone 0
- 2:19:40-3 against Nolan Ryan. Twice has been struck
- 2:19:42out. Bonds hitting .337 with four home runs and
- 2:19:47ten runs batted in. Make it 11 RBI as he drove
- 2:19:50in. The lone giant run in the third inning when
- 2:19:54he grabbed it out. A half swing. He held up in
- 2:19:57time. It's inside and a high ball one. Bonds
- 2:20:07the hitter with Ron Hunt on deck. And the pitch
- 2:20:15by Ryan fouled it back upstairs and out of play.
- 2:20:19Seven walks by Nolan Ryan ties a club record.
- 2:20:23Cardwell walked seven in one ballgame last year.
- 2:20:34Cardwell walked seven in a game against the Giants
- 2:20:37in late August last season. The 1 -1 delivery.
- 2:20:43Swing and a miss. He goes after a breaking ball.
- 2:20:47with a count of one and two on Bobby Bond Davenport
- 2:20:51on second Mason on first two men out now with
- 2:20:58a count of one and two you can bet that Ryan
- 2:21:00will be reaching back trying to get that extra
- 2:21:02yard Ryan in the set position and the pitch on
- 2:21:08the way just missed inside it's two and two Wes
- 2:21:15Westrom coaching at first. Ozzie Virgil at third
- 2:21:17for the Giants. Tommy Agee playing Bobby Bonds
- 2:21:26astride toward right center. Pitching two and
- 2:21:29two. Ground ball hit down to third base. In comes
- 2:21:32Foy. He's up with it. Steps on third. The side
- 2:21:34is up. First play at third made by Joe Foy. That
- 2:21:38retires the Giants. No runs. One hit, no errors,
- 2:21:42and two left on. At the end of seven, the New
- 2:21:48York Mets four and the San Francisco Giants one.
- 2:22:35Natural Rheingold. It is high time that I was
- 2:22:40searching for the natural thing. Rheingold Breweries
- 2:22:49Incorporated, New York, New York, and Orange,
- 2:22:51New Jersey, ask you to help keep America beautiful.
- 2:22:57Frank Lindsay, the new pitcher for the Giants,
- 2:22:59as we go to the eighth inning, and Bobby Heiss
- 2:23:01is now playing shortstop. Frank Reberger came
- 2:23:04on in the sixth. He pitched two innings. Gave
- 2:23:08up one run, allowed four hits. He walked none
- 2:23:13and struck out one. Now Frank Linzer is on in
- 2:23:21the eighth. seen Lindsey and each of the three
- 2:23:37games in the series. Joe Foy will lead off. Foy
- 2:23:49has really celebrated his return to the lineup
- 2:23:51today. Three for three. Two singles and a double.
- 2:23:58All four of the right -hand hitters benched by
- 2:24:01Gil Hodges because they were not hitting. have
- 2:24:03returned to the lineup today, and all four have
- 2:24:05come up with base hits. Now Lindsey out of his
- 2:24:11windup in the pitch to Foy, a fastball high at
- 2:24:13ball one. Leon has two for three. Ron Svoboda,
- 2:24:19one for three. Joe Foy, three for three. And
- 2:24:23Tommy Agee, one for four, a home run. Lindsey
- 2:24:27delivers and gets the outside corner at all strike.
- 2:24:32Frank Lindsey has now relieved three days in
- 2:24:34a row in this series. He has now been in 13 ballgames
- 2:24:37already. The 1 -1 delivery by Lindsey. Ground
- 2:24:49ball whacked down to third. Big hop for Davenport.
- 2:24:51The overhand throw to McCovey. One down. In relief
- 2:24:55last year, Lindsey won 14 and lost nine. You
- 2:25:00know, the people of Wrangeville... reminds you
- 2:25:02a beautiful America is up to you. So please don't
- 2:25:06litter. One away in the eighth inning, Ken Boswell
- 2:25:13bats for the second time. He came up as a pinch
- 2:25:16hitter for Al Weiss in the sixth inning when
- 2:25:18the Giants went to a right -hand pitcher. Boswell
- 2:25:21was hit in the back with a pitch. When he takes
- 2:25:47over on the mound, if he's right, and he usually
- 2:25:50is, batters hit the ball on the ground. Duffy
- 2:25:54Dyer. 0 for 3 this afternoon. For the ground
- 2:26:02ball, his last time up with the bases loaded,
- 2:26:04Lanier threw home for a forced play. Dyer went
- 2:26:07to first, but Dyer was called out because of
- 2:26:09interference on the part of Ron Swoboda with
- 2:26:11the catcher Dick Dietz. Low and outside, ball
- 2:26:15one. Giants have played 22 games, counting this
- 2:26:20one, and Lindsey has been in 13 of the first
- 2:26:2322. Today is set by about a yard. Muscle will
- 2:27:07fly to San Diego after the game. Tom Seaver will
- 2:27:10open the Padres series against Al Santorini tomorrow
- 2:27:12night. Santorini, a talented young pitcher out
- 2:27:16of Union, New Jersey. And the pitch on the way.
- 2:27:29Inside, Duffy steps back. It's two balls and
- 2:27:32two strikes. New York four runs on ten hits,
- 2:27:36no errors. And the Giants one run, two hits,
- 2:27:39and no errors. Pitching two and two. And a half
- 2:27:48swing foul ball down the third base line. No
- 2:27:50play. Well, Ralph, how's your singing voice today?
- 2:27:55About the same as it always is, Bob. Well, I
- 2:27:59thought you might want to sing happy birthday
- 2:28:01to Harold Weissman. That's right. It is his birthday,
- 2:28:04isn't it? Happy birthday to Harold Weissman,
- 2:28:06the public relations director of the New York
- 2:28:08Mets. He knows how to have a birthday. He celebrated
- 2:28:12his birthday by taking all the fellas out to
- 2:28:14dinner last night and picking up the tab. It's
- 2:28:15not bad. I wish he'd have more of them. 2 -2
- 2:28:19delivery. Inside and low. It's ball three. Jim
- 2:28:29McAndrew is working now in the Mets bullpen.
- 2:28:33Mack's last start, he pitched a great ball game.
- 2:28:36Mets starters have been pitching so well, it's
- 2:28:38hard for him to get into the rotation. 3 -2 delivery.
- 2:28:44A little bit high, and Dyer goes to first to
- 2:28:46the walk. Nolan Ryan coming up. Nolan, bounce
- 2:28:53to third. He was robbed of a hit on quite a play
- 2:28:56by Giant shortstop Al Lanier, and he flied to
- 2:28:59right field. Nolan is 0 -3. Ryan getting a smattering
- 2:29:14of applause from Giant fans who appreciate good
- 2:29:18baseball. And it's foul back toward the screen,
- 2:29:21no play. New York, the Mets getting two of the
- 2:29:29four runs in the first inning. They were driven
- 2:29:31in by Joe Foy. Leon Jones singled in the third
- 2:29:35run and Tommy Agee homered for the fourth run.
- 2:29:39Bobby Bonds drove in the lone giant run back
- 2:29:41in the third. Towering foul pop -up back toward
- 2:29:45the stands and out of play. What a beautiful
- 2:29:48day this has been in San Francisco. We haven't
- 2:29:53seen a cloud all day long. Uh -oh. Ralph spotted
- 2:30:00one way off on the horizon. Eagle Eye Kiner,
- 2:30:02they call him. No wonder you could hit home runs.
- 2:30:07You've got great eyesight. Here's the pitch on
- 2:30:11the way. Swing and a miss. He struck him out.
- 2:30:13That retires the side in the eighth inning as
- 2:30:15Lindsey fans Nolan Ryan. No runs, no hits, no
- 2:30:19errors, and one left. And the score in the middle
- 2:30:21of the eighth inning, the New York Mets 4, the

- 2:31:34that heavy artillery here in the bottom half
- 2:31:36of the eighth inning. Ron Hunt will lead off,
- 2:31:39then Ken Henderson and Willie McCovey. Brown
- 2:31:44hitting .393. He has been blistering hot. 4 -4
- 2:31:49in a walk yesterday. He's walked twice today.
- 2:31:51Gone 0 -1 officially. Fly it out to right field
- 2:31:55in the third inning. They go to the ninth inning
- 2:32:02at Sox Park in Chicago with the White Sox leading
- 2:32:05the Orioles 6 -3. Knuckleballer Wilbur Wood has
- 2:32:09come on in relief to try and protect the lead.
- 2:32:12And Nolan Ryan pitches to Ron on a fastball strike
- 2:32:15one call. Otherwise, in the American League today,
- 2:32:20the Red Sox beat Oakland 8 -7 and Minnesota beat
- 2:32:23Cleveland 4 -1. Now Ryan reading the information
- 2:32:33from W. Dyer on the pitch. Knees for a call strike.
- 2:32:38Good low pitch by Nolan Ryan. Walked seven and
- 2:32:53struck out seven. The Giants have had six left
- 2:32:57on base. Two -strike delivery. Just missed the
- 2:33:02outside corner with a breaking ball. One ball
- 2:33:04and two strikes. Ken Henderson taking some phantom
- 2:33:10swings in the on -deck circle. The cloud that
- 2:33:18Ralph Kinder spotted a few minutes ago is a little
- 2:33:20white cloud that must be 100 miles away. Ground
- 2:33:22ball is down to third. Joe Foy comes up, throws
- 2:33:25to first base in time for the out. Right here,
- 2:33:28we pause for station identification. This is
- 2:33:31the New York Mets Baseball Network. You're listening
- 2:33:33to New York Mets Baseball on WKAJ -FM 102 .3
- 2:33:37in Saratoga Springs, New York, the home of the
- 2:33:40New York Mets. Bob Murphy with Ralph Kainer and
- 2:33:44Lindsey Nelson were in the last of the eighth
- 2:33:46inning in San Francisco. The Mets leading 4 -1.
- 2:33:50Switch hitting Ken Henderson has hit into a double
- 2:33:52play, walked and popped a third, and nothing
- 2:33:54for two. A swirl of dust ran around the batter's
- 2:34:00box, and so Henderson steps out. That wind has
- 2:34:04really freshened up, blowing to right field.
- 2:34:08Now Ryan into his lineup, and the pitch thrown.
- 2:34:11Misses the outside corner, it's ball one. Number
- 2:34:1444, Willie McCovey, kneeling in the on -deck
- 2:34:17circle. Duffy Dyer setting up the target. Ryan's
- 2:34:28pitch is inside. Ball two. It's 2 -0. Two balls
- 2:34:36and no strikes. He's taking all the way, trying
- 2:34:44to coax a walk down in front of McCovey and the
- 2:34:46pitch is outside and low. Ball three. Nothing
- 2:34:50going at the moment in the New York bullpen.
- 2:34:54And Ryan has gone behind Henderson 3 -0. He'll
- 2:34:57be trying very hard not to walk in with McCovey
- 2:34:59waiting on deck. Over for a strike, 3 -1. Ryan
- 2:35:19has had two 1 -2 -3 innings. Outside at ball
- 2:35:23four. So here comes McCovey. That's the eighth
- 2:35:26walk by Nolan Ryan. That's a new Mets club record
- 2:35:33that Nolan doesn't particularly want. Nolan Ryan
- 2:35:41probably has thrown about 145 pitches or so by
- 2:35:46now. McCovey twice has bounced out. to Joe Foy,
- 2:35:52who came up with the ground ball on the right
- 2:35:54side of the infield. He moves over, and the defense
- 2:35:57designed by Gil Hodges for McCovey. Last time
- 2:36:00up, he flied to deep center. And a ground ball
- 2:36:02hit hard toward the middle. Foy grabs it first
- 2:36:04to Harrison Watt on the first. Double play! And
- 2:36:08the defense set up by Gil Hodges was perfect.
- 2:36:11Foy, for the third time today, getting the ground
- 2:36:13ball while playing over on the right side of
- 2:36:16the infield. And so the double play goes on.
- 2:36:22And the side is retired in the eighth inning
- 2:36:24with no runs, no hits, no errors, and none left.
- 2:36:27At the end of eight, the score, the New York
- 2:36:30Mets 4 and the San Francisco Giants 1. That could

- 2:38:08The White Sox turn back the Orioles 6 -3. And
- 2:38:12a foul ball on the ground coming right straight
- 2:38:14back. Tommy John, the winning pitcher, he gets
- 2:38:17his first victory after five losses. Tom Peebus
- 2:38:20was the loser. Danny Murphy relieved in the eighth
- 2:38:24and then Wilbur Wood came in on the eighth and
- 2:38:26preserved the win. Down comes the arm of Frank
- 2:38:34Lindsey. Fastball inside, brushing the hitter
- 2:38:36back. One ball, one strike. The Mets can win
- 2:38:42this one. It will be the first time in their
- 2:38:45history they have won 10 games in April. The
- 2:38:511 -1 delivery. Full foul back toward the on -deck
- 2:38:55circle occupied by Buddy Harrelson. 1 -2. First
- 2:39:07six men in the batting order for the Mets today
- 2:39:08all have at least one base hit. Lindsey delivers
- 2:39:18one and two. Breaking ball low outside is two
- 2:39:22balls and two strikes. On to San Diego following
- 2:39:29the game today. Mets and Padres play tomorrow
- 2:39:31night. Our broadcast time tomorrow night, 1025
- 2:39:34p .m. New York time. The 2 -2 delivery and a
- 2:39:39fastball over strength recall. For Frank Lindsey,
- 2:39:44his second strikeout. Lindsey has relieved at
- 2:39:47each of the three games of this series. Bud Harrelson,
- 2:39:51one for four, a triple to right center in the
- 2:39:54fifth inning. The time Bud tripled to right center
- 2:39:59of the score was 2 -1 New York. Leon Jones promptly
- 2:40:03signaled him home to make it 3 -1. Harrelson
- 2:40:07hitting left -hander. And a ground ball bounced
- 2:40:09right at Ron Hunt. Hunt is up with it. Throws
- 2:40:12on to McCovey. Two down. Two outs and nobody
- 2:40:16on top of the ninth inning. Now Cleon Jones.
- 2:40:19Cleon two for three and a walk. Don Clinton has
- 2:40:28hit in hard luck today. Our clink would have
- 2:40:30four for four. It is two for three, raising his
- 2:40:44batting average to .246. Now Lindsey looks around.
- 2:40:51Defense playing just about straight away against
- 2:40:53Leon Jones. The right -handers pitch on the way.
- 2:40:56He is over for a call strike. Frank Lindsey has
- 2:40:59been the bullpen leader for the Giants for the
- 2:41:01last five years. Two outs. Base is empty. Low
- 2:41:14and inside to Cleon. One ball, one strike. This
- 2:41:19has been an entertaining ballgame. A couple of
- 2:41:22lively arguments to spice things up. Some good
- 2:41:26players in the field and some good hitting. And
- 2:41:29top pitching. All the ingredients. Low and outside.
- 2:41:34Two balls and a strike to Cleon Jones. Nolan
- 2:41:38Ryan has had great stuff. He has been wild. He's
- 2:41:42walked eight men for a new Mets club record.
- 2:41:44And I imagine he's probably now thrown over 150
- 2:41:47pitches. The 2 -1 delivery. It's high, and Jones
- 2:41:52lets it go 3 -1. Ryan's first start, he hurled
- 2:42:01a one -hitter. His second start, a two -hitter.
- 2:42:04Today, his third start, he has given up two hits.
- 2:42:08Brown ball, whacked to shortstop. In comes Ladarius
- 2:42:11Nags to be high hot. And guns it to McCovey,
- 2:42:13the side is up. Mets go down 1 -2 -3 in the ninth
- 2:42:17inning. No runs, no hits, no errors done left.
- 2:42:20And the score in the middle of the ninth inning,
- 2:42:22the New York Mets 4 and the San Francisco Giants

- 2:43:42home runs and 21 runs batted in. In the American
- 2:43:48League this afternoon, the Red Sox beat Oakland
- 2:43:508 -7. Minnesota beat Cleveland 4 -1. And the
- 2:43:53White Sox turn back the Orioles 6 -3. And the
- 2:43:57pitch by Nolan Ryan is over at the knees. Strike
- 2:43:59one call. single in the third and Davenport doubled
- 2:44:05in the seventh. Those are the two hits given
- 2:44:07up by Nolan Ryan. Now the wind up by Nolan. Breaking
- 2:44:15ball a strike on the outside corner. Ryan quickly
- 2:44:19establishes a two strike advantage. The way the
- 2:44:24wind is blowing to right field Tommy Agee is
- 2:44:26shading most of the right hand batters a bit
- 2:44:28over toward right center. Two -strike delivery.
- 2:44:34Foul. He just got a piece of it back over the
- 2:44:36screen. Jim Davenport waiting on death. Ryan
- 2:44:57with his sign now from Dyer. In comes the pitch.
- 2:45:00He struck him out. and struck out a twenty eight
- 2:45:10strikeouts down for Nolan Ryan and three starts.
- 2:45:14That's an average of better than nine a game.
- 2:45:18Jim Davenport has tried to right walked and doubled
- 2:45:21the right center. Ryan over the head and the
- 2:45:28pitch fastball down the middle call a strike
- 2:45:31one. That's four Giants one bottom half of the
- 2:45:34ninth inning. Now the reach of Boswell who was
- 2:45:57lunging to his glove side. Rookie left fielder
- 2:46:02Bob Taylor, who bats left -handed, comes up.
- 2:46:05He reached on a walk and later scored the giant
- 2:46:08run back in the third inning. Since then, he
- 2:46:10has struck out twice. Toby Dyer now signs to
- 2:46:16the infield. One man out. Triumph for two. Coy
- 2:46:21playing even with the bag. Wide of the line at
- 2:46:24third. Bud Harrelson shakes. Leach's drive towards
- 2:46:26second. And the pitch. A chopper going foul off
- 2:46:30the right. No play. Bobby Heiss, who took over
- 2:46:38at shortstop, after Howell and Neal left the
- 2:46:40game for a pinch hitter, is the on -deck batter.
- 2:46:56Sir was 26 years old. Spent eight years in the
- 2:47:00giant farm system. And the pitch. Swing and a
- 2:47:04miss and a curveball. And the count is straight
- 2:47:06two. Good -looking curveball by Nolan Ryan. Tom
- 2:47:14Seaver and Al Santorini are the pitchers tomorrow
- 2:47:17night in the opening game of the four -game series
- 2:47:19in San Diego. the runner. The two -strike delivery.
- 2:47:29Foul ball. He was trying to get out of the way.
- 2:47:31He didn't mean to hit that. Inside fastball by
- 2:47:35Ryan and Taylor was falling back from the plate.
- 2:47:45Bobby Heiss has been called back to the dugout
- 2:47:48by Clyde King. Bob Berta, a left -hand hitter,
- 2:47:51has come out on deck. The pitch. Outside and
- 2:47:54a high. One ball and two strikes. The Mets took
- 2:48:00the lead in the first inning of the game when
- 2:48:02Joe Foy single two runs in. Foy is celebrating
- 2:48:05his return to the lineup with three hits today.
- 2:48:09Pitching one and two. Curve inside and low, two
- 2:48:13balls and two strikes. Now Ryan nods in agreement
- 2:48:27with Duffy Dyer. The 2 -2 delivery. Foul back
- 2:48:30into the crowd. That's what we're hoping to get
- 2:48:39beautiful weather in San Diego for the weekend
- 2:48:41series. They had a rainout Monday night in San
- 2:48:47Diego. The first game they've ever had rained
- 2:48:49out. The count is 2 -2. There have been some
- 2:49:28fine plays in this ballgame. Alan Neer turned
- 2:49:31in a great play on a ball hit by Glenn Dennett
- 2:49:33and almost took him out the left field. And that
- 2:49:35play right there, a very difficult play because
- 2:49:37the ball would be curving away from boys he made
- 2:49:40his diet. Bob Berta, left -hand batter, is hitting
- 2:49:44now for Bobby Heiss. Two down, we're in the ninth.
- 2:49:48Here's the pitch by Nolan Ryan. On the outside,
- 2:49:51corner calls, drag one. with two men away. Ryan
- 2:50:11delivers. His curveball misses outside. One ball
- 2:50:14and one strike. Giants have used three pitchers
- 2:50:18today. McCormick worked five. Frank Reberger,
- 2:50:20two, and Frank Lindsey, two. Lindsey relieving
- 2:50:24in each game of the three -game series. And the
- 2:50:27pitch. Foul pop -up back toward the stands. No
- 2:50:31play for Duffy Dyer. Duffy giving chase, but
- 2:50:34it's going to land in the crowd. Saturday in
- 2:50:49San Diego and a doubleheader on Sunday. We will
- 2:50:56be broadcasting each of the four games of the
- 2:50:58series and televising the first game of the doubleheader
- 2:51:00on Sunday. Pitching one and two. Just missed
- 2:51:05the outside corner. It's two and two. Nolan Ryan
- 2:51:09trying to get the final out here in the last
- 2:51:11of the ninth inning. Two delivery. Fouled. Back
- 2:51:24over the screen. No play. Now Berta just putting
- 2:51:30the bat on that one to foul it off. Berta left
- 2:51:36-hand hitter. Fundenin not holding against the
- 2:51:38rudder. He's back at fielding depth. Nolan Ryan
- 2:51:43strolling behind the mound. Now comes up on the
- 2:51:46pitching slab to get his sign from Dyer. Mets
- 2:51:534, Giants 1, bottom half of the ninth. Now Ryan
- 2:51:57makes the pause. And the pitcher on the way,
- 2:52:01fouled. He got a piece of it straight back into
- 2:52:03the screen. Ryan still riding with that high
- 2:52:08hard one. Mets 4 runs on 10 hits and the Giants
- 2:52:171 run on 3 hits. And Willie Mays is around the
- 2:52:23bat rack. Pitching two and two. Ground ball hit
- 2:52:28hard, but right at Boswell. He's up when it throws
- 2:52:30to Hamilton. The game is over, and the Mets win
- 2:52:33it. What a performance by Nolan Ryan. Nolan Ryan
- 2:52:36has started three games. He has pitched a one
- 2:52:39-hitter, a two -hitter, and now a three -hitter.
- 2:52:43What pitching by Nolan Ryan of the New York Mets.
- 2:52:47In the ninth inning for the Giants, no runs,
- 2:52:49one hit, no errors. and one left on. Final score
- 2:52:53as the Mets take the rubber game of the three
- 2:52:55-game series. The New York Mets four and the
- 2:52:58San Francisco Giants one. The final score, the
- 2:53:02Mets four and the Giants one. And for the recap,
- 2:53:04here's Ralph. All right, Bob Murphy, the game
- 2:53:07-winning hit came in the first inning, but the
- 2:53:09insurance runs that came in the fifth and seventh
- 2:53:11certainly helping a lot as Nolan Ryan picked
- 2:53:13up his second win. Ron in trouble throughout
- 2:53:16the ballgame in spite of the fact that he gave
- 2:53:18only three hits because of the eight walks that
- 2:53:20he issued. In the first inning, Cleon Jones,
- 2:53:23with two men out, walked in the 3 -2 pitch. The
- 2:53:25starting pitcher was Mike McCormick. Don Clendenin
- 2:53:28then singled in the left field to put Jones down
- 2:53:31to second. Ron Svoboda, while at bat, popped
- 2:53:34the ball up behind home plate and dropped in.
- 2:53:36The catcher did not find the ball, Dick Dietz,
- 2:53:39and it gave Ron a life. Ron then in a very, very
- 2:53:42close pitch. 3 -2, took it for ball four to load
- 2:53:46up the bases. Joe Foy came up and singled hard
- 2:53:49to center field, and the Mets had two runs in,
- 2:53:51and that proved to be enough to win the ballgame.
- 2:53:53They got insurance runs in the fifth on a triple
- 2:53:56by Bud Harrelson over the center fielder's head,
- 2:53:58a single by Creon Jones to right, and also picked
- 2:54:01up a run in the seventh on Tommy Agee's home
- 2:54:03run to left field. Tommy kept his 11 -game hitting
- 2:54:07streak going, and it was a hard drive over the
- 2:54:09left field fence. In the ballgame, the Giants
- 2:54:12used McCormick. Reberger and Lindsey on the mound.
- 2:54:15McCormick, the losing pitcher, now 1 -2. Nolan
- 2:54:18Ryan with a record of 2 -1. Time of game, 2 hours,
- 2:54:2246 minutes. And the attendance here today was
- 2:54:255 ,149. Ryan scored the ball game as the Mets
- 2:54:29won their 10th game. They have lost 9. And incidentally,
- 2:54:32the Mets now have won more games in the month
- 2:54:34of April than they ever have in their past history,
- 2:54:36winning their 10th game here today. San Francisco
- 2:54:39with a record of 10 wins and 12 losses. The Mets,
- 2:54:424 runs. Ten hits, no errors, and eight men left
- 2:54:45on. The Giants, one run, three hits, no errors,
- 2:54:47and seven men left on base. New York Mets baseball
