Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: We are all called to a form of endurance. And
- 0:05Speaker 1: part of what's meaningful and purposeful in that is that endurance,
- 0:07Speaker 1: it's going to develop our character. It's going to develop
- 0:09Speaker 1: our capacity. It's going to develop our faithfulness. These are
- 0:13Speaker 1: things God wants to strengthen in you. So endurance is
- 0:16Speaker 1: this ability to carry weight, but it's carrying weight with
- 0:19Speaker 1: a purpose. That's what you were called to do. If
- 0:21Speaker 1: you're just selfish, you're going to live a miserable life.
- 0:24Speaker 1: You're going to miss the purpose of your life. You're
- 0:26Speaker 1: going to be empty on the inside. That's impossible. Let
- 0:30Speaker 1: me tell you what I believe. Your weakness is not
- 0:33Speaker 1: your technique. Don't think you are.
- 0:39Speaker 2: No, you are the impossible life podcast.
- 0:43Speaker 1: You're sitting on a winning lottery ticket. An idea that
- 0:46Speaker 1: is fully formed, fully understood that sticks. This is the
- 0:52Speaker 1: impossible life podcast because Nick and I are attempting to
- 0:56Speaker 1: live impossible lives. What we know is that nothing is impossible.
- 1:01Speaker 1: So instead of using impossible as an excuse to not try,
- 1:05Speaker 1: we'll use the pursuit of impossible as an accelerant for greatness.
- 1:10Speaker 1: If something's never been done before, that just means it's unexplored.
- 1:14Speaker 1: If they tell you it's too hard, it's just waiting
- 1:17Speaker 1: to be simplified. Impossible is a default label used by
- 1:21Speaker 1: uncourageous people, unwilling to take a risk. The real truth
- 1:25Speaker 1: is this. The solution to any impossible task starts with
- 1:30Speaker 1: this question. If I had to, what would it take?
- 1:38Speaker 2: Welcome to another episode of the Impossible Life Podcast. I'm
- 1:41Speaker 2: your co-host, Nick Surface, and I'm looking across at a
- 1:43Speaker 2: man whose favorite prophetic worship song is Let the Bodies
- 1:46Speaker 2: Hit the Floor by Drowning Pool. That's right, friends, the
- 1:48Speaker 2: former Navy SEAL. Karen Unkelbach, a man who knows that
- 1:55Speaker 2: art imitates life.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Oh, that's a good one.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:58Speaker 1: You got me.
- 1:59Speaker 2: That one made me chuckle a lot. Like I said,
- 2:03Speaker 2: I have a process for this, and I got clarity
- 2:05Speaker 2: on this, and we just fully send. So praise the Lord.
- 2:08Speaker 2: I never thought anybody would worship that, but, you know,
- 2:11Speaker 2: you're the guy. All right. Gee, today's episode is so
- 2:14Speaker 2: meaty that I just feel like we should just hardly
- 2:18Speaker 2: Full send.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Hard charge. Hard charge it. Hard dog, full sprint. Yeah.
- 2:23Speaker 1: My daughter, Grace, she started saying, Daddy, that's a hard dog.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I know. I've got Elijah saying it as well.
- 2:29Speaker 1: It's good. The other day, she wanted to get in
- 2:32Speaker 1: the ice bath because I was in there and she
- 2:37Speaker 1: wanted to get in. And I go, is that a
- 2:40Speaker 1: hard dog? She goes, yeah, it's a hard dog. And
- 2:43Speaker 1: so I get her in. And she does what she,
- 2:45Speaker 1: she's getting bigger. So she does what she normally does.
- 2:47Speaker 1: She like stands in there up to her waist. And
- 2:49Speaker 1: I was like, no hard dogs go all the way down. Yeah.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Like shoulders in. And it was actually the first time
- 2:54Speaker 1: that she's done it. And the look on her face
- 2:57Speaker 1: was hilarious. Ripped the air right out of her lungs.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:01Speaker 1: It'll do that to you. She got out. She was
- 3:05Speaker 1: full panic. Yeah. She got out. And then. I went
- 3:08Speaker 1: and talked to her. She ran around, warmed up. I said, no,
- 3:11Speaker 1: you got to do at least 10 seconds with your
- 3:13Speaker 1: shoulders under. That's what hard dogs do. And she goes,
- 3:15Speaker 1: I want to be mini hard dog.
- 3:17Speaker 2: She's already found a way. She's like, let's just find
- 3:19Speaker 2: the technicality. And isn't that, that's like all of our brains.
- 3:22Speaker 2: That is what we all do is what a little
- 3:23Speaker 2: five-year-old Grace is doing is we find a way to negotiate.
- 3:26Speaker 2: That still counts. All right. But full sense. So today,
- 3:29Speaker 2: like we're big on endurance. Obviously the Bible is massive
- 3:32Speaker 2: on endurance. We're going to cover all this. And the
- 3:34Speaker 2: question becomes like, how do I know when to endure
- 3:36Speaker 2: and when to quit? Because it's not that you just go, well,
- 3:39Speaker 2: once I start anything, I finish it.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Because if you.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Start the wrong thing, the wise thing to do is
- 3:44Speaker 2: to realize it and to get back on course, right?
- 3:47Speaker 2: Because running in the wrong direction is not a wise
- 3:50Speaker 2: thing to do. And that sounds overly simplistic, but in life,
- 3:52Speaker 2: it's a lot more complicated. So we're going to answer
- 3:55Speaker 2: that question. There's a lot to it. Famous example of this, G,
- 3:59Speaker 2: where I think it's so interesting. And this is where
- 4:01Speaker 2: I think it's a little bit easier to to see
- 4:03Speaker 2: whenever you look at like business, I think business is
- 4:05Speaker 2: a great place where you go like, well, should I
- 4:07Speaker 2: keep going? Because, you know, should you quit on your faith? No.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Should you quit on your marriage?
- 4:12Speaker 3: No.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Like there's some things where it's very obvious, like that
- 4:14Speaker 2: God has said, no, this is something that I've given you,
- 4:17Speaker 2: but there's so much where it's like the application of
- 4:20Speaker 2: endurance gets a little bit more complicated. Well, there's this
- 4:22Speaker 2: little app that we all know and love called Instagram.
- 4:25Speaker 2: And I didn't know this, but I was looking this up.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Such an interesting story. Instagram actually started as an app
- 4:31Speaker 2: called Bourbon, B-U-R-B-N. So Kevin Systrom, he built this HTMI5
- 4:36Speaker 2: mobile app, which tells you how long ago it was.
- 4:38Speaker 2: And basically, he had made this app. He got a $ 500, 000
- 4:40Speaker 2: seed round where you could check in at locations. You
- 4:44Speaker 2: could plan future plans and earn posts for outings. And
- 4:47Speaker 2: then like you could share photos from the outings that
- 4:49Speaker 2: you did. It was like a social app. And if
- 4:50Speaker 2: you remember like Foursquare and some of these like check-in
- 4:53Speaker 2: things were big in like late 2009, like early 2010 timeframes.
- 4:59Speaker 2: So anyways, he launches this app. Unfortunately, it's like really
- 5:02Speaker 2: complicated and people weren't really using it the way he
- 5:05Speaker 2: wanted to. So it's looking like a failure. Okay. When
- 5:07Speaker 2: to stick, when to twist. However, he noticed that a
- 5:09Speaker 2: lot of people They weren't using the checking and planning tools,
- 5:12Speaker 2: but they were sharing photos. And it was massively in
- 5:17Speaker 2: favor of the sharing photos and very, very few people
- 5:19Speaker 2: actually using what it was intended for. And so he
- 5:22Speaker 2: was on a vacation with his partner at the time,
- 5:25Speaker 2: and she wanted to share pictures. And he was like, well,
- 5:27Speaker 2: why don't you put your pictures up on, I think
- 5:30Speaker 2: it was Facebook. And she was like, well, my pictures
- 5:32Speaker 2: don't look as good as everybody else's. So he had
- 5:34Speaker 2: this brainwave. What if we could create a filter that
- 5:37Speaker 2: that would make the pictures look better because remember camera
- 5:40Speaker 2: quality is not super high, high in like 2009, 2010.
- 5:42Speaker 2: What if we can make it look better? And while
- 5:45Speaker 2: they're applying the filter, it's already uploading the photos so
- 5:47Speaker 2: that it would make up for slow connection speeds. So he, he,
- 5:51Speaker 2: he has this brainwave puts it in. It was the
- 5:53Speaker 2: first filter they had, which I think was like X
- 5:55Speaker 2: pro two. And so he comes out, he stripped 90%
- 5:58Speaker 2: of the app that he'd spent $ 500, 000 and a lot
- 6:01Speaker 2: of his time on and decide to go all in
- 6:03Speaker 2: on this data of we're going to allow people to
- 6:05Speaker 2: just share the Uh, pictures.
- 6:07Speaker 1: An app that now you could have Claude do in
- 6:10Speaker 1: 45 minutes.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Exactly. That's the thing that's so funny is like you
- 6:12Speaker 2: fast forward and you're like, how much time and effort
- 6:13Speaker 2: did you spend on that? I could do that. I
- 6:15Speaker 2: could talk that into Claude and make it happen. But
- 6:17Speaker 2: the point being, so he, he basically strips it down
- 6:19Speaker 2: to pictures, likes, and comments, launches it. And in the
- 6:22Speaker 2: first month he gets 25,000 users. Like this doesn't really,
- 6:25Speaker 2: I don't, this is what everybody wants. This isn't necessarily
- 6:28Speaker 2: the way things always go. And then, uh, they, they
- 6:30Speaker 2: then get acquired 18 months later by this company called
- 6:34Speaker 2: Facebook for a billion dollars. And so like start off
- 6:37Speaker 2: with a bourbon ad.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Nice.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Yeah. That's the story everybody wants is like, oh, I
- 6:41Speaker 2: just found a little part to pivot and that's how
- 6:44Speaker 2: we got there.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Turned a bad idea into a billion dollar idea. Exactly.
- 6:47Speaker 2: And we all want that. However, I'm sure I could
- 6:51Speaker 2: tell you 50 other stories of people who just kept
- 6:53Speaker 2: going down the wrong line and ended up wasting even
- 6:55Speaker 2: more money. And those are the stories that we're not telling.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Like you hear a story about Instagram bourbon and you're like, oh, wow,
- 6:59Speaker 2: that's amazing. So the question for everybody is like, how
- 7:03Speaker 2: do you know when to stick? and when to pivot.
- 7:05Speaker 1: This is actually the, I had one of my good
- 7:08Speaker 1: friends asked me this question and I've been asked this
- 7:11Speaker 1: question many times and I've helped a lot of people
- 7:14Speaker 1: through like personal coaching answer this question. But I said,
- 7:17Speaker 1: you know what, why don't we answer this question?
- 7:19Speaker 2: Well, we've never covered it. Cause you said you're like,
- 7:21Speaker 2: I was actually surprised. I thought we had, well, no,
- 7:23Speaker 2: we've talked, I mean, you've got some solid endurance episodes.
- 7:26Speaker 2: You're not going to ever miss out on us telling like, Hey,
- 7:28Speaker 2: actually you need to endure, but there are times when
- 7:31Speaker 2: you should quit. And, and that's really what we want
- 7:33Speaker 2: to look at. And, and, um, Yeah, I think we
- 7:35Speaker 2: should just dive into it, G. So first, I mean,
- 7:37Speaker 2: first thing, endurance, man. Let's be the impossible life.
- 7:40Speaker 1: That's who we are.
- 7:40Speaker 2: What is endurance?
- 7:41Speaker 1: Well, endurance is, you know, this comes from Scripture, and
- 7:46Speaker 1: one of my favorite Scriptures is Scripture that guides me,
- 7:49Speaker 1: that I think you get a lot of Scriptures in
- 7:52Speaker 1: an entire story. It's helping reveal who God is, but
- 7:55Speaker 1: there's pieces of Scripture that help you understand what does
- 7:57Speaker 1: God want you to do? Why are you here? And
- 7:58Speaker 1: one of those Scriptures that really is a strength to
- 8:01Speaker 1: me is James 1. Consider it joy when you face
- 8:03Speaker 1: struggles of any kind. Because this is an opportunity for
- 8:06Speaker 1: your endurance to grow. And when your endurance is mature,
- 8:10Speaker 1: you'll be complete and lacking nothing. What does God want
- 8:13Speaker 1: for you? He wants your endurance to mature, to become complete.
- 8:17Speaker 1: And what endurance is, is the Greek word hypomone, which
- 8:20Speaker 1: means to stay under the weight. It's pretty important that you...
- 8:24Speaker 1: God wants you to be strong. God wants you to
- 8:25Speaker 1: have the ability to carry weight. Doesn't mean God wants
- 8:28Speaker 1: you to do it all by yourself. What it does
- 8:30Speaker 1: mean is God's like, look, I'm already infinitely strong. I'm
- 8:33Speaker 1: trying to get you to pick up more than one
- 8:35Speaker 1: bag of flour at a time. And the way that
- 8:39Speaker 1: I look at endurance is endurance, you can think it's like, oh,
- 8:43Speaker 1: it's just being hard dog, being tough guy. It's more
- 8:47Speaker 1: than that. Yes, you need strength. You need perseverance. But
- 8:51Speaker 1: endurance isn't just refusing to quit the way that I
- 8:54Speaker 1: want to talk about endurance, the way that I want
- 8:55Speaker 1: to set it up today. Endurance is really about refusing
- 8:58Speaker 1: to abandon what's worth suffering for. Yeah. Because this is
- 9:01Speaker 1: the life that Christ has called us to. It's not
- 9:04Speaker 1: a call to pointless suffering. It's a call to significant,
- 9:08Speaker 1: very meaningful suffering. Yeah.
- 9:10Speaker 2: And I think to the episode we did with Dr. Robbie,
- 9:12Speaker 2: and we really are so blessed because we do have
- 9:15Speaker 2: a very clear filter for what's worth suffering for. And
- 9:19Speaker 2: we're called to it. Hebrews 12, 1 and 2 is
- 9:21Speaker 2: a phenomenal scripture for this. And I want to highlight,
- 9:24Speaker 2: this is after the Hall of Faith. If you know
- 9:26Speaker 2: Hebrews 11, they list out all these great things that
- 9:28Speaker 2: happen in the Bible and talk about these people who
- 9:30Speaker 2: by faith, by faith they overcame, they conquered, and it's like, yes,
- 9:34Speaker 2: all this inspiration. So you have this whole chapter laid
- 9:36Speaker 2: out about all these people who were Enoch, taken up
- 9:39Speaker 2: because he pleased God, like Abraham, the father of faith,
- 9:42Speaker 2: all these people. And then this is the conclusion of it,
- 9:46Speaker 2: like the reasoning, Hebrews 12, 1 and 2. Therefore, since
- 9:50Speaker 2: we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses... Like,
- 9:50Speaker 2: we are told to endure. It's very clear. Like, we're
- 10:14Speaker 2: not put in for a life of ease and.
- 10:16Speaker 1: And Jesus didn't come here to hard dog flex.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Right, no.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Verse two, for the joy that was set before him
- 10:24Speaker 1: endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at
- 10:27Speaker 1: the right hand of the throne of God. He knew
- 10:29Speaker 1: why he was doing it.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:30Speaker 1: There was a purpose to it. Yeah. And there's a
- 10:33Speaker 1: purpose for our endurance, right? There's a purpose for why
- 10:38Speaker 1: God put you on the earth, okay? God put you
- 10:40Speaker 1: here for a reason... God wants you to do something
- 10:43Speaker 1: with your life. And that's different for all of us.
- 10:46Speaker 1: I can't tell everyone at the same time what we're
- 10:48Speaker 1: all called to do. But for each of us, we
- 10:51Speaker 1: are all called to a form of endurance. And part
- 10:54Speaker 1: of what's meaningful and purposeful in that is that endurance,
- 10:57Speaker 1: it's going to develop our character. It's going to develop
- 10:59Speaker 1: our capacity. It's going to develop our faithfulness. These are
- 11:02Speaker 1: things God wants to strengthen in you. So endurance is
- 11:05Speaker 1: this ability to carry weight. And then why we endure
- 11:09Speaker 1: is it's this development in us, development of the strength
- 11:12Speaker 1: of our character, development of our capacity. It's not just
- 11:16Speaker 1: carrying weight, but it's carrying weight with a purpose. That's
- 11:19Speaker 1: what you were called to do. We're here to serve.
- 11:22Speaker 1: We're here to build. We're here to grow. We're here
- 11:24Speaker 1: to become who God's called us to be. You're not
- 11:26Speaker 1: just going to float around on the earth. Because if
- 11:28Speaker 1: you float around on the earth, if your life's all
- 11:30Speaker 1: about you, if you're just selfish, you're going to live
- 11:32Speaker 1: a miserable life. You're going to miss the purpose of
- 11:34Speaker 1: your life. You're going to be empty on the inside.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:38Speaker 2: And we all know that. Like logically that sounds good,
- 11:41Speaker 2: but man, rationale is a killer G because rationale in
- 11:43Speaker 2: the moment is telling me like, oh, but this doesn't
- 11:45Speaker 2: make sense. It would be a lot more like, of
- 11:47Speaker 2: course you're going to do this. Remember we talked about
- 11:49Speaker 2: selfishness is being appealed to all the time in our society.
- 11:52Speaker 2: But so we said, you said endurance develops character, capacity,
- 11:55Speaker 2: and faithfulness. And also, also Jesus talks about in the
- 11:58Speaker 2: parable of the sower, it develops your fruitfulness. Like everybody,
- 12:01Speaker 2: when you hear, you know, produces 30, 60, a hundred fold,
- 12:04Speaker 2: we're like, yeah, like we want to be that guy.
- 12:06Speaker 2: And I think it's so interesting when Jesus gives the
- 12:08Speaker 2: parable of the sowers, I'm so grateful that we have
- 12:10Speaker 2: in scripture some of their private conversations because he talks
- 12:13Speaker 2: to them. He goes, hey, I speak to them so
- 12:15Speaker 2: that hearing they would not understand and seeing they would
- 12:17Speaker 2: not see. And he's like, but I'll explain it to
- 12:19Speaker 2: you because the mysteries of heaven have been revealed. So
- 12:21Speaker 2: he talks about this parable of the sower, sows on
- 12:23Speaker 2: bad ground, it gets stolen, you know, sows up, sows
- 12:26Speaker 2: another place, it grows up and then the weeds choke
- 12:28Speaker 2: it out, sows up another place, the sun scorches it.
- 12:30Speaker 2: And then there's one soil that like produces. And so
- 12:32Speaker 2: we're like, yeah, I want to be that soil. And
- 12:35Speaker 2: he tells them in Luke 8, 15, he says, as
- 12:37Speaker 2: for that in the good soil, these are the people
- 12:39Speaker 2: we want to be. They are those who hearing the word,
- 12:42Speaker 2: hold it fast in an honest and good heart and
- 12:46Speaker 2: bear fruit with what? Dang it. Well, darn. Can I
- 12:50Speaker 2: be like, I wanted the super grow soil, Jesus, that like,
- 12:54Speaker 2: you know, it grows 10 years worth of soil in
- 12:56Speaker 2: one year. And it's just not the way. And I
- 12:59Speaker 2: think there's actually an argument to be made. When you
- 13:01Speaker 2: look at what stole from those other soils, I think
- 13:04Speaker 2: that's the condition of all men. I really think you
- 13:06Speaker 2: have to pass all those soils. Are the cares of
- 13:08Speaker 2: this life going to try and choke out what God's
- 13:09Speaker 2: put in you?
- 13:11Speaker 3: 100%.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Right. You know, are doubts going to come along?
- 13:13Speaker 1: 100%.
- 13:14Speaker 2: That's good. And like, it's not until you learn that, hey,
- 13:17Speaker 2: this is going to be with endurance and that I'm
- 13:18Speaker 2: actually going to bear fruit that you can actually run.
- 13:21Speaker 1: And in the context of soil, you know, like where,
- 13:25Speaker 1: you know, because I talk about all the time and
- 13:26Speaker 1: it's a verse I stand on, Galatians 6, 8, God
- 13:29Speaker 1: will not be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Okay.
- 13:32Speaker 1: And so, you know what that means? That means sometimes, like,
- 13:36Speaker 1: I think that's a very strong and deliberate verse. God
- 13:39Speaker 1: will not be mocked. Yeah. So what it's saying is like,
- 13:41Speaker 1: sometimes you feel like you're being mocked, right? Like, man,
- 13:44Speaker 1: why isn't it working?
- 13:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Okay. It's not working because you have to give it longer.
- 13:48Speaker 1: And God's saying, I promise you the seed that is
- 13:51Speaker 1: sowed correctly will grow. Yeah. He's saying, I will not
- 13:55Speaker 1: be mocked in that. So don't stand on yourself. You
- 13:57Speaker 1: need to stand on me and understand this is the
- 13:59Speaker 1: way things work. And if you've sowed correctly and the
- 14:02Speaker 1: harvest has not come yet, you know what that means?
- 14:04Speaker 1: Means you need to be patient. Yeah. So, okay.
- 14:08Speaker 2: So we've touched on like a little, like, I love
- 14:09Speaker 2: that you pulled out the part where it says for
- 14:11Speaker 2: the joy set before him, he endured. So, cause I mean, I, I,
- 14:15Speaker 2: I've often thought about that. What would someone, what would
- 14:17Speaker 2: you need to know to be like, you're going to
- 14:19Speaker 2: die the most brutal death possible? Like, I don't know
- 14:21Speaker 2: that we kill people as brutal as they used to
- 14:24Speaker 2: even nowadays.
- 14:24Speaker 1: And that's James one, consider it. You have to be
- 14:27Speaker 1: able to see it that way. And this is all
- 14:29Speaker 1: stuff that we've talked about before, right? For, for the
- 14:32Speaker 1: amazing audience that we have here, We don't need to,
- 14:35Speaker 1: I would say, necessarily convince you to endure. We're just
- 14:39Speaker 1: covering some of that today. You know why endurance is important.
- 14:42Speaker 1: You believe what Scripture says. But really the question we're
- 14:45Speaker 1: answering today that I think is a question many people,
- 14:47Speaker 1: it's like, man, I'm serving after God. I want to
- 14:48Speaker 1: live a life of purpose. But is what I'm doing
- 14:51Speaker 1: what I'm supposed to be doing? Do I keep going
- 14:53Speaker 1: down this road or do I pivot? Yeah.
- 14:56Speaker 2: So how should we endure? I guess is the obvious question.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Yeah. I'm going to answer the how to know I'm
- 15:01Speaker 1: enduring for the right thing. but first I want to
- 15:03Speaker 1: talk about how we're supposed to endure in general. Endurance
- 15:07Speaker 1: isn't just like, well, I just lace up my sneakers
- 15:11Speaker 1: and I dry scoop some pre-workout and bang my head
- 15:14Speaker 1: against the concrete and then I just go hit the
- 15:16Speaker 1: pavement and I run and I grind it out. That's
- 15:19Speaker 1: what endurance can look like, but I want to get
- 15:22Speaker 1: into what endurance really is. One of the key pieces
- 15:26Speaker 1: of endurance is conviction. You need to have Like your
- 15:30Speaker 1: endurance has to come from a meaningful place. And so
- 15:35Speaker 1: when I say how we should endure, I just said
- 15:37Speaker 1: how to not, you know, just dry scoop, pre-workout and
- 15:41Speaker 1: go hard dog, right? Really what an endurance has to
- 15:44Speaker 1: come from a meaningful place, but it also has to
- 15:46Speaker 1: have the humility to not do the wrong thing. So
- 15:50Speaker 1: you've got to have the conviction to keep going, but
- 15:51Speaker 1: you've got to have the humility to quit when you're
- 15:54Speaker 1: doing the wrong thing, right? Because If there's ego in it,
- 15:57Speaker 1: that's not really endurance. And a lot of people, like
- 16:00Speaker 1: ego is like anger. It works for a time. And
- 16:03Speaker 1: so people, they unfortunately eat from this thing that you
- 16:08Speaker 1: shouldn't eat from and it makes them feel stronger temporarily.
- 16:12Speaker 1: And then they continue to do it because like, well,
- 16:14Speaker 1: it got me here. So I should keep doing this.
- 16:16Speaker 1: And ego and anger, they don't come from a meaningful place.
- 16:19Speaker 1: They come from a prideful place. And so then what
- 16:22Speaker 1: they do is they continue to take you down the
- 16:23Speaker 1: wrong road. And that's where sometimes people, ego has taken
- 16:26Speaker 1: them down a road, and then they're trying to answer
- 16:28Speaker 1: a question that humility is supposed to answer. And this
- 16:31Speaker 1: becomes a very tough question. So anyways, how we should endure,
- 16:35Speaker 1: it's not about rigidity either, okay? Like you have to
- 16:39Speaker 1: have the will to keep going, but you can't get
- 16:42Speaker 1: married to the route, right? This is the difference between
- 16:46Speaker 1: consistency and rigidity. Like I'm gonna keep going in what
- 16:49Speaker 1: God's called me to do, but maybe, you know, Right.
- 16:52Speaker 1: For the vision here of the impossible life. What's the
- 16:55Speaker 1: vision of the impossible life, Nick? Change the mindset of
- 16:57Speaker 1: what it means to be a godly man. Okay. And
- 17:00Speaker 1: right now we're doing that via podcasts and we have
- 17:02Speaker 1: no plans to change that. But let me just use
- 17:05Speaker 1: that as an example of there's a lot of different
- 17:07Speaker 1: ways that we could shift the mindset. Yeah. Okay. And
- 17:10Speaker 1: like say podcast media went away or something like that.
- 17:13Speaker 1: I don't know. We would have the ability. It's like, okay,
- 17:15Speaker 1: we're still called to that mission.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 17:17Speaker 1: But we're going to change the method that we do.
- 17:19Speaker 1: This is the difference between consistency and rigidity. And I
- 17:22Speaker 1: think a lot of people get stuck in the endurance
- 17:24Speaker 1: question is because they're very rigid. Like, well, I have
- 17:26Speaker 1: to do this and the business has to be this.
- 17:28Speaker 1: And a lot of the things I'll answer this question
- 17:31Speaker 1: today and talk about this will be in relation to
- 17:33Speaker 1: a business because I think this is where a lot
- 17:35Speaker 1: of people ask this specific question. How do I know
- 17:38Speaker 1: if I should keep going or if I should quit?
- 17:40Speaker 1: I think a lot of people ask that as it
- 17:41Speaker 1: relates to a job or a business that they've started.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Yeah, and I'm glad you said that because some things,
- 17:47Speaker 2: like I said in the beginning, you're not called to
- 17:49Speaker 2: quit your faith. And there's some things that are so obvious.
- 17:52Speaker 2: It's like, well, I don't think I need to go
- 17:53Speaker 2: to church. Okay, this is not a podcast for you.
- 17:57Speaker 2: That's just undeniable. You need to be in church. The
- 17:59Speaker 2: only thing that Jesus established on the earth was the church,
- 18:02Speaker 2: so you.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Need to be in church.
- 18:04Speaker 2: But it's all those ancillary things where you're like, is
- 18:07Speaker 2: this a good thing? Is this the best thing? Is
- 18:09Speaker 2: this a bad thing that looks like a good thing?
- 18:11Speaker 2: And that's where it gets so confusing. So you said
- 18:13Speaker 2: don't confuse consistency with rigidity and you've got to have
- 18:16Speaker 2: the humility to quit the wrong thing. And that's where
- 18:19Speaker 2: I think that it becomes very tough because the hard
- 18:22Speaker 2: part about ego and selfishness is that it's very deceptive.
- 18:25Speaker 2: It doesn't come along and go like I'm selfishness and
- 18:27Speaker 2: you just go, well, you know what?
- 18:28Speaker 1: I don't care. I'll take it anyways.
- 18:30Speaker 2: It comes along and like it strokes some rationale. It
- 18:34Speaker 2: strokes some feelings. And now your lens has been changed.
- 18:38Speaker 2: You're like, this actually looks like, yeah, I think this
- 18:40Speaker 2: is a good thing. And it's not until you get
- 18:42Speaker 2: down the road that you're like, how did I get here?
- 18:45Speaker 2: And so we're trying to identify that, how did I
- 18:47Speaker 2: get here, way before you start down the road.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Ego seems great, but it becomes spiritual debt in your life.
- 18:53Speaker 1: You're having to, it's like, man, I dug myself into
- 18:55Speaker 1: a hole with this wrong way of living, this wrong
- 18:58Speaker 1: way of behavior. What it comes down to is you've
- 19:01Speaker 1: got it. So what is endurance? Endurance is willingness, continuing
- 19:05Speaker 1: of suffering. Okay. So what it comes down to is
- 19:07Speaker 1: you got to be able to identify what is the
- 19:10Speaker 1: core thing that is worth suffering for. Okay. Because what
- 19:15Speaker 1: ego's about you, like ego sometimes will drive you past
- 19:18Speaker 1: these barriers where you're saying like, okay, this will help
- 19:21Speaker 1: me get what I want. But if it's all about you,
- 19:24Speaker 1: so you'll come to a place where the suffering is like, dude,
- 19:26Speaker 1: whatever I thought I wanted, it's not worth it anymore.
- 19:29Speaker 1: You've got to have something that's more important than you
- 19:32Speaker 1: that's worth suffering for. So you've got to be able
- 19:34Speaker 1: to identify what is the core thing that I'm willing
- 19:37Speaker 1: to suffer for. Then you can continue to endure the
- 19:40Speaker 1: mission and potentially adapt the methods. You used the hook
- 19:46Speaker 1: in the beginning around the Instagram story, but I think
- 19:48Speaker 1: there's so many experiences. we have in life where it's like, okay,
- 19:51Speaker 1: maybe I've got to shift this or pivot that, but
- 19:53Speaker 1: I can continue to pursue what matters. Yeah.
- 19:56Speaker 2: You know, I think the, and this is, you know,
- 19:58Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin as I'm
- 20:01Speaker 2: walking on, because, you know, we're not the finished article
- 20:03Speaker 2: by any stretch of the imagination on this podcast. We're
- 20:05Speaker 2: running our race and we know that, you know, God's
- 20:07Speaker 2: constantly got us in process. The more I walk the
- 20:10Speaker 2: Holy Spirit and the more you get more sensitive to
- 20:12Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit's conviction, the more I become aware of
- 20:15Speaker 2: areas where I'm selfish. Dude, it sucks, man. I'm just
- 20:19Speaker 2: being real. It sucks because I'm like, how am I
- 20:20Speaker 2: so selfish? I'm disappointed in myself. But I find that
- 20:24Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit, because you said you've got to say
- 20:27Speaker 2: what's worth suffering for, what's the mission, and the humility
- 20:29Speaker 2: to quit the wrong thing. Well, the more that you
- 20:31Speaker 2: become sensitive to the Holy Spirit's leading. So how is that?
- 20:33Speaker 2: It's prayer. It's prayer. It's time with God. It's being
- 20:36Speaker 2: around others. It's true. It's like doing all the basics
- 20:38Speaker 2: for a long time. Like anything, the more you get
- 20:39Speaker 2: to know somebody, the more you get to know the
- 20:41Speaker 2: Holy Spirit and you relate with God, the more that
- 20:43Speaker 2: he's going to start to convict you on things and
- 20:45Speaker 2: you're going to see your motive for things. And oftentimes
- 20:48Speaker 2: it's a good thing. And I've talked about if this
- 20:50Speaker 2: podcast ever becomes about like, well, how many followers could
- 20:53Speaker 2: we get? And it becomes about anything other than us
- 20:55Speaker 2: being faithful. We're wrong. And I'd be lying if I
- 20:57Speaker 2: said I haven't had times of prayer where I felt
- 20:59Speaker 2: like the Holy Spirit said, you're looking at the wrong thing.
- 21:01Speaker 2: And I've had to repent.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Right.
- 21:03Speaker 2: And so that, that I'm sharing this with the audience
- 21:04Speaker 2: because I want this to be real and I want
- 21:06Speaker 2: this to be helpful.
- 21:06Speaker 1: That's a great example of the, you know, rigidity.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Right.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Not getting stuck on like, well, it has to be
- 21:11Speaker 1: this way. Like it has to be about this thing.
- 21:14Speaker 1: And I think when, I think people encounter that barrier
- 21:16Speaker 1: sometimes and they think like, oh, this is endurance. And
- 21:19Speaker 1: so I'll just fight through this. That's not actually the
- 21:22Speaker 1: thing you're supposed to be fighting for, fighting through. So
- 21:25Speaker 1: I'm going to give three qualities that attempt to put strong,
- 21:30Speaker 1: healthy endurance in a box that we can understand. So
- 21:33Speaker 1: three qualities here of strong, healthy endurance. Number one is conviction.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Conviction is you can say, I know why this matters.
- 21:44Speaker 1: I know why this is worth suffering for. You don't
- 21:47Speaker 1: want it to say, it's like, well, I've just been
- 21:49Speaker 1: doing this for a long time. That's not conviction. Conviction
- 21:53Speaker 1: is you can Doesn't matter what price you've paid. You
- 21:56Speaker 1: can look at it today and say, this is still
- 21:58Speaker 1: worth paying the price for. Yeah. Because otherwise you're, you're, you're, you're,
- 22:02Speaker 1: you're trying to like when people put seed in the ground, like, well,
- 22:06Speaker 1: I've already spent so much on this seed. That's not
- 22:09Speaker 1: the right mentality. You've got to be able to say,
- 22:10Speaker 1: I know why this is worth doing. This is still
- 22:13Speaker 1: worth doing even today. And I think this is where
- 22:15Speaker 1: a lot of people get stuck. Again, this is more
- 22:17Speaker 1: related to business is if you, if you're saying, I
- 22:21Speaker 1: know why this matters or I know why this is
- 22:22Speaker 1: worth the pain. If the answer to that is money, well,
- 22:26Speaker 1: at some point, like the money doesn't change. Like there's
- 22:30Speaker 1: inflation on, or sorry, deflation on the value of the
- 22:34Speaker 1: money here. When, you know, you're thinking, let's just use
- 22:37Speaker 1: easy numbers here. Like, okay, if I can do this,
- 22:39Speaker 1: I'll make a million dollars.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Right.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Right. And this was, you know, spend six months working,
- 22:46Speaker 1: you know, an extra 40 hours a week on my
- 22:48Speaker 1: part-time business. And this will get me on the path
- 22:50Speaker 1: to a million dollars. What about when you're on year four? Right.
- 22:54Speaker 1: And you're still chasing after the same goal of getting
- 22:59Speaker 1: your business to a certain place and making a million dollars,
- 23:01Speaker 1: but you've spent a long time on it now. If
- 23:04Speaker 1: the pain is worth the money and the pain keeps
- 23:06Speaker 1: going up, but the money doesn't go up, eventually you
- 23:08Speaker 1: get to a point where you're like, hey, this isn't
- 23:10Speaker 1: worth it. Yes.
- 23:11Speaker 2: I think you just described, and this is where I
- 23:13Speaker 2: so appreciate when we did the Purpose Driven Profit Accelerator,
- 23:16Speaker 2: how much you highlighted That businesses don't exist to make money.
- 23:19Speaker 2: They exist to solve problems. And I think that that
- 23:24Speaker 2: simple phrase, as you often succinctly say things, they don't
- 23:27Speaker 2: exist to make money. They exist to solve problems. Because
- 23:30Speaker 2: so many people, they're solving their own personal problem of
- 23:32Speaker 2: money rather than a problem that actually needs to be solved.
- 23:34Speaker 2: They get to that point, and they run out of–
- 23:38Speaker 2: they never had purpose fuel. They had pain and pleasure fuel,
- 23:41Speaker 2: and it just runs out. And I think that's where
- 23:44Speaker 2: a lot of people will get so far down the
- 23:46Speaker 2: road and figure the question.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Well, because then at year four, people are saying, you know,
- 23:49Speaker 1: if I ask you the question, is it still worth it?
- 23:52Speaker 1: The wrong answer is, well, if it's going to take
- 23:55Speaker 1: me another two years from here, then yeah, you're going
- 23:57Speaker 1: to quit. You're going to fail. When after you've been
- 24:00Speaker 1: doing it for four years and you thought it was
- 24:02Speaker 1: going to take one year and I say, you know,
- 24:04Speaker 1: is it still worth it? You start talking to me
- 24:07Speaker 1: about why the problem that you're solving is so important.
- 24:10Speaker 1: You're going down the right road. This comes back to,
- 24:13Speaker 1: This is one of the things I first identified in
- 24:16Speaker 1: talking to students who quit.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Right. Talk to the ones who made it. How did
- 24:21Speaker 1: you make it through hell week? One of the most
- 24:23Speaker 1: difficult weeks in all of military training in the world.
- 24:26Speaker 1: How did you do it? When the answer they give
- 24:28Speaker 1: you is about someone else, it makes sense why they're there.
- 24:32Speaker 1: And you talk to the people who quit. Why did
- 24:33Speaker 1: you quit? Their answer starts with, well, I, they talk
- 24:37Speaker 1: about themselves.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:38Speaker 1: When, And it's not like saying, oh, well, if I
- 24:41Speaker 1: just don't talk about myself, then I'll make it. No,
- 24:43Speaker 1: it's what you focus on. It's the conviction. Yeah. When
- 24:46Speaker 1: you have conviction, you're willing. Why did Jesus endure the cross?
- 24:51Speaker 1: For the joy that was set before him. What was
- 24:53Speaker 1: the joy? To rescue the people that he loved.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Right.
- 24:56Speaker 1: It wasn't about him.
- 24:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:58Speaker 2: And I mean, well said.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Keep going, man. I just think it's so true. So
- 25:03Speaker 1: number two here. So the first piece of strong, healthy
- 25:06Speaker 1: endurance is conviction. Number two is adaptability. Okay. You've got
- 25:10Speaker 1: to have some flexibility in how you get there. And
- 25:13Speaker 1: this isn't, you would think this is a human quality,
- 25:15Speaker 1: but also look at the story of God and humanity. Yeah.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. Like we've talked about this before on
- 25:22Speaker 1: the journey of your purpose. It's not a tightrope. It
- 25:25Speaker 1: is the, you know, it's the multiverse in that God
- 25:28Speaker 1: has like, every time you screwed up, God's like, it's okay.
- 25:30Speaker 1: There's another path.
- 25:31Speaker 3: Yes.
- 25:32Speaker 1: There's another path. He can continually fold in. Here's how
- 25:36Speaker 1: we get you to what a purposeful life is for you.
- 25:39Speaker 1: God is not stuck in one place in time and
- 25:40Speaker 1: we have to, that's not us, but we got to
- 25:44Speaker 1: have flexibility and really what the thing is about, right?
- 25:47Speaker 1: When you know what is worth suffering for, what's the
- 25:49Speaker 1: key thing that matters, then you're going to be able
- 25:51Speaker 1: to say, okay, the destination is more important than the route.
- 25:54Speaker 1: But when you have an ego problem, you get stuck
- 25:57Speaker 1: on like, no, but I said it was going to
- 25:59Speaker 1: be this and I need the business, you know, because
- 26:02Speaker 1: ego starts telling you, well, if I changed it, you know,
- 26:04Speaker 1: I said this, I made these ego statements in the
- 26:06Speaker 1: past about this business. And so if I change the plan,
- 26:09Speaker 1: Then I make myself look bad, and you don't really
- 26:11Speaker 1: know what's worth suffering for.
- 26:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:13Speaker 2: And as a highlight, a point of awareness for anybody
- 26:16Speaker 2: out there, especially in faith, anytime you start to get
- 26:19Speaker 2: to the point where you're like, no, it has to
- 26:21Speaker 2: be this way, and it's about anything other than Jesus
- 26:24Speaker 2: Christ as the way to the Father, you should really
- 26:26Speaker 2: step back and think about what you're doing, because most
- 26:29Speaker 2: likely you're wrong. And the reason I say that is
- 26:32Speaker 2: because I've done this myself. like oftentimes we want to
- 26:35Speaker 2: figure things out.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Right.
- 26:37Speaker 2: So like, I've looked at like, what's a normal salvation.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Like what does salvation actually require? And so like, I
- 26:42Speaker 2: wanted to find this prototypical, like this is, this is
- 26:44Speaker 2: how we really need to get people saved because then
- 26:46Speaker 2: they'll last and they'll, they'll walk with God. And like,
- 26:49Speaker 2: that's a, sounds like a great logical thought process wanting
- 26:52Speaker 2: to do a good thing. And then I go into
- 26:53Speaker 2: scripture and I'm like, Oh wait, this Ethiopian guy that like,
- 26:57Speaker 2: I think it was Philip just kind of rolled up
- 26:58Speaker 2: on while he was reading Isaiah, led him to the Lord.
- 27:01Speaker 2: And then the spirit whisked them away. And I'm like, well,
- 27:03Speaker 2: Who discipled that guy? Because in my mind, it's like, no,
- 27:05Speaker 2: we've got to get people in for discipleship. He just
- 27:09Speaker 2: got whisked away. And then there's other people. It's like, well,
- 27:11Speaker 2: we had the baptism of John. Well, you didn't even
- 27:13Speaker 2: get the Holy Spirit. I'm going to lay hands. There's
- 27:16Speaker 2: different ways. I want to have it. You come in.
- 27:19Speaker 2: This is exactly what happens. I want to do industrialization Christianity. Why?
- 27:23Speaker 2: Because I want to control it. At the root of it,
- 27:25Speaker 2: what that is, is that's a sense of control. And
- 27:27Speaker 2: what you just described about saying God always has another way,
- 27:31Speaker 2: That's what actual power looks like, is you do whatever
- 27:34Speaker 2: you want, and I'm still going to win. I'm still
- 27:37Speaker 2: going to make things happen. And that's the God that
- 27:39Speaker 2: we serve. So like I said, if you're going to
- 27:41Speaker 2: be rigid about one thing, this is the only thing,
- 27:43Speaker 2: be rigid that Jesus Christ is God's Son, and there's
- 27:45Speaker 2: no other way to the Father than through Him. Other
- 27:47Speaker 2: than that, we need to have an openness about how
- 27:50Speaker 2: we consider things. Because the more rigid you get, what
- 27:52Speaker 2: you'll find is you start to operate in your own
- 27:55Speaker 2: strength instead of being led by the Holy Spirit.
- 27:56Speaker 1: And you start trying to tell God how to do
- 27:58Speaker 1: his job. Yeah.
- 27:59Speaker 2: I don't ever want to do that. Even you saying
- 28:00Speaker 2: that makes me shudder. So let's keep going.
- 28:03Speaker 1: And the third quality. So we have conviction, we have adaptability.
- 28:07Speaker 1: And these things together, I would say, turn into this
- 28:09Speaker 1: third quality.
- 28:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Which is a sense of surrender. Yeah. You have to be...
- 28:15Speaker 1: And here's the part that you're surrendering. You have to
- 28:18Speaker 1: be fully committed... To, okay, here's what I'm doing. Here's
- 28:21Speaker 1: why it matters so much. Here's the price that I'm
- 28:24Speaker 1: willing to pay. You've got to be fully committed to that.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Have the endurance. I'm just going to keep going on
- 28:30Speaker 1: this without being, and this is the part that you
- 28:33Speaker 1: have to surrender. This is the part that you're giving
- 28:34Speaker 1: up without being emotionally committed to the outcome. Yeah. And
- 28:37Speaker 1: that's where like people keep making this value equation in
- 28:41Speaker 1: their head. I'll do it as long as I can
- 28:44Speaker 1: get this. But as soon as the other side of
- 28:46Speaker 1: this transaction starts going quiet on me and not continuing
- 28:50Speaker 1: to reassure me that I'm going to get what I
- 28:52Speaker 1: thought I was going to get for the work that
- 28:54Speaker 1: I'm putting in, then that's when people get upset and
- 28:57Speaker 1: they quit and they back away. Surrender is saying, this is,
- 29:00Speaker 1: you know, and this is, it's like God's covenant with us.
- 29:03Speaker 1: I'll do my part even if you don't do yours.
- 29:06Speaker 1: God invites us into, it's an opportunity. God's always going
- 29:08Speaker 1: to do his part. but he's inviting us to learn
- 29:11Speaker 1: how to do that with the life that he's called
- 29:13Speaker 1: us to. Look at your purpose and say, I'll serve
- 29:15Speaker 1: you even if you don't serve me back.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Yeah, man, so good. And that's, we've quoted it before,
- 29:20Speaker 2: it's Job, though he slay me, yet my hope will
- 29:22Speaker 2: be in him.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 29:23Speaker 2: It's Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Our God will deliver us
- 29:27Speaker 2: from this fire and can deliver us from your hand.
- 29:28Speaker 2: But even if he doesn't, know that we will not
- 29:31Speaker 2: bow down. Like, come on, man. That is like the
- 29:36Speaker 2: right level of.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Of endurance. G.
- 29:40Speaker 1: So that's the right thing. Yeah, it's impractical. This is
- 29:43Speaker 1: how you should endure. Let me talk about what enduring
- 29:47Speaker 1: for the wrong thing looks like, and then I'm going
- 29:49Speaker 1: to do the best I can to give you some
- 29:51Speaker 1: filters to understand how to endure for the right things.
- 29:54Speaker 1: But what does wrong endurance look like? We made some
- 29:58Speaker 1: joking analogy to it earlier but I'm going to put
- 30:00Speaker 1: this into a few categories here. Number one is ego endurance, right?
- 30:06Speaker 1: Ego endurance is when like you get so locked in,
- 30:09Speaker 1: you're protecting your identity, you're protecting your ego. You're not
- 30:14Speaker 1: pursuing the goal anymore. You're just saying, I don't want
- 30:16Speaker 1: to be wrong. And you get this, everything starts becoming about,
- 30:20Speaker 1: you know, you versus them. And there's so, I see
- 30:22Speaker 1: so much of this ego content on Instagram. You know,
- 30:26Speaker 1: it's people put it in different ways, but it's just
- 30:28Speaker 1: the me versus the world. And like, I got to
- 30:30Speaker 1: beat them. You know, they're against us. You know, DJ Khaled. Yeah, dude.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Like always talking about they. Who's they?
- 30:37Speaker 2: Dude, they block. I got you some of that for
- 30:39Speaker 2: your birthday.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Who's they? Like, you know, if I give, they don't
- 30:44Speaker 1: want us to win. Who is they? Right. This is
- 30:48Speaker 1: a war with your ego. Yeah.
- 30:50Speaker 3: Right.
- 30:50Speaker 1: This is like you want to. The people who are
- 30:53Speaker 1: creating that content, they actually want what I'm trying to
- 30:56Speaker 1: teach you how to do. When you get mission focused,
- 30:59Speaker 1: you do not care about any of, there is no
- 31:02Speaker 1: more they. And that's really like the cool guys on
- 31:06Speaker 1: Instagram are trying to pretend like, you know, I don't
- 31:09Speaker 1: care about them. Okay. When you actually live a mission
- 31:12Speaker 1: focused life, when you're doing what God puts you on
- 31:15Speaker 1: the earth to do, they disappear. Yeah.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Well, this is a whole T-shirt industry. There's like T-shirts
- 31:20Speaker 2: that say you can insert whatever versus everybody. And you
- 31:23Speaker 2: wear that and it's kind of like, yeah, like us
- 31:25Speaker 2: versus the world. And like you see this in sports.
- 31:27Speaker 2: He just created a siege mentality. Everybody was against us.
- 31:30Speaker 2: And guess what? Those guys win championships. So seemingly that
- 31:35Speaker 2: is a route to get what you want, which isn't
- 31:38Speaker 2: that the nature of ego, to get.
- 31:39Speaker 1: What you want. Yeah, but then they get it. and
- 31:42Speaker 1: it's not what they wanted.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Steve Weatherford, Adam on our podcast, said it was the
- 31:45Speaker 2: most empty day of his life when he won the
- 31:46Speaker 2: Super Bowl.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Yeah, so wrong type of endurance is ego endurance. And
- 31:51Speaker 1: you get to this place where you stop pursuing the
- 31:54Speaker 1: original goal. I think a lot of times we'll start
- 31:55Speaker 1: with a pure heart or a semi-pure heart. We think
- 31:57Speaker 1: we're doing the right thing, but then we keep using
- 32:01Speaker 1: ego fuel to keep us going because we're scared and
- 32:05Speaker 1: we're frustrated and we don't know how to keep moving forward.
- 32:07Speaker 1: We're scared to trust in God, so we ego fuel
- 32:09Speaker 1: our way forward. And then that becomes the entire goal
- 32:12Speaker 1: is just protecting your ego. Yeah, man. This is an
- 32:15Speaker 1: endurance that shatters your life, right? Number two type of
- 32:19Speaker 1: wrong endurance. And this is, you know, people call it
- 32:22Speaker 1: the sunk cost fallacy. I'm just talking about sunk cost
- 32:25Speaker 1: endurance here. We're just like, man, I've put too much
- 32:28Speaker 1: into this, so I just can't stop.
- 32:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:31Speaker 1: And this is where I think sometimes people are asking
- 32:33Speaker 1: this question. They start thinking like, man, have I put
- 32:36Speaker 1: too much into this and should I stop?
- 32:37Speaker 3: Right.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Right. Am I, am I, am I doing the wrong thing?
- 32:40Speaker 1: Let me give you a question that this, I wouldn't
- 32:43Speaker 1: say this will answer it for a hundred percent of
- 32:46Speaker 1: people that are stuck in this place, but this will
- 32:48Speaker 1: help many of you. Cause this is both a question
- 32:52Speaker 1: that'll help the sunk cost and help the ego issue.
- 32:57Speaker 1: But the question is this, if I started over, knowing,
- 33:01Speaker 1: like if you could go back in time, knowing everything
- 33:04Speaker 1: that you know now, would you still choose this? If
- 33:07Speaker 1: you could go back in, if you could start over,
- 33:10Speaker 1: go back in time, back up five years ago, 10
- 33:13Speaker 1: years ago, would you still go down this road? Because
- 33:16Speaker 1: that's a question that's going to, if you feel like
- 33:19Speaker 1: the answer is no, you're going to feel like, man, no,
- 33:21Speaker 1: I've been like pouring money into something and I know
- 33:24Speaker 1: it's not going to amount to anything. But if you
- 33:27Speaker 1: are less concerned about the value equation of the transaction
- 33:30Speaker 1: and you're more focused on why you're doing what you're doing,
- 33:33Speaker 1: you're going to say like, no, I would still do
- 33:34Speaker 1: the same thing. I mean, like hopefully I would, hopefully
- 33:36Speaker 1: I'd be in a different place than where I am.
- 33:37Speaker 1: I'd do some things differently, but I wouldn't not choose
- 33:40Speaker 1: this road.
- 33:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:41Speaker 2: I hope people are gathering what you're putting down here, G,
- 33:44Speaker 2: because I think what people want is you want them
- 33:47Speaker 2: to give you like an exact filter. So you can
- 33:48Speaker 2: go like, here's all the stuff I need to cut out.
- 33:50Speaker 2: And here's all the stuff I need to keep doing.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Well, this is a wisdom question. You're asking, you're asking
- 33:54Speaker 1: me to answer a wisdom question for you. All I
- 33:56Speaker 1: can do is give you wisdom. Proverbs says to prize wisdom.
- 33:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:59Speaker 1: If you ask me for the answer, you're asking for certainty.
- 34:02Speaker 1: The same way that people got into these problems is
- 34:04Speaker 1: because they were looking for certainty.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Well, right. And what you're saying, if people aren't picking
- 34:08Speaker 2: this up, it's something you've said on this podcast many times.
- 34:10Speaker 2: You said God doesn't care as much about what you
- 34:12Speaker 2: do as he does about why you're doing it.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Why you're doing it.
- 34:14Speaker 2: And so when we're talking about endurance and what to quit,
- 34:16Speaker 2: you'll notice we keep coming back to the scripture we
- 34:19Speaker 2: gave you, why you're doing it.
- 34:20Speaker 1: He endured the cross. It's exactly why Jesus rebuked the Pharisees.
- 34:24Speaker 1: You're trying to do the right thing for the wrong reason,
- 34:26Speaker 1: and Christ will rebuke you all the same in your
- 34:29Speaker 1: pursuit of your purpose when you're trying to ask God, like,
- 34:32Speaker 1: You know, what dance do I got to do for
- 34:34Speaker 1: you to make it rain? And he says, seek me
- 34:36Speaker 1: with all your heart.
- 34:37Speaker 3: Right.
- 34:38Speaker 2: And then I'll get the blessing? No, no, that's not
- 34:40Speaker 2: all your heart. Seek me with all your heart.
- 34:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:42Speaker 2: And then by the time, yeah.
- 34:43Speaker 1: It's the willingness where Abraham said, it says in Hebrews
- 34:48Speaker 1: that Abraham supposed God would bring Isaac back from the dead.
- 34:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:51Speaker 1: You're asking me to give up the thing that's most
- 34:53Speaker 1: valuable to me, and I don't know.
- 34:55Speaker 2: If I could or how I would ever get it back. Yeah,
- 34:57Speaker 2: and let me just encourage everybody. God is so much
- 35:00Speaker 2: better than we can imagine. Like, however good you hope
- 35:02Speaker 2: God is, he's better than that. I was reflecting on
- 35:05Speaker 2: my life because I had a trip back to San
- 35:06Speaker 2: Diego recently, and I was saying, like, I'm so grateful
- 35:10Speaker 2: for brokenness. I was talking to a new guy at
- 35:13Speaker 2: Mighty Man yesterday, and I was saying one of the
- 35:14Speaker 2: best things you can have when you come into this
- 35:15Speaker 2: place is to know that your ways aren't working. Because
- 35:18Speaker 2: when you're broken and you know that your life's not working,
- 35:20Speaker 2: you're now open to listening. And when you're opening to
- 35:23Speaker 2: listening and you seek God from that place, of like, Lord,
- 35:25Speaker 2: just tell me. Like, I just need you. He meets you.
- 35:29Speaker 2: And I look at our life now, six years into
- 35:32Speaker 2: being here in Elevate Life Church and everything that we've done,
- 35:36Speaker 2: and I said to Rena, I was like, this is
- 35:37Speaker 2: so much better than I ever would. Like, if you
- 35:39Speaker 2: would have had me write the script before we moved
- 35:41Speaker 2: out here, or even at any point in my life previous,
- 35:43Speaker 2: I would have never written as good as what we have.
- 35:46Speaker 2: And it's so humbling, because it's not me. It's just like,
- 35:49Speaker 2: I just want to remind people, God is so good.
- 35:51Speaker 2: All the things that make you want to hold on
- 35:53Speaker 2: to what you think you want, and uncertainties and your fears,
- 35:57Speaker 2: those are things that are robbing you from what God
- 36:00Speaker 2: actually has for you, which is so much better. Like
- 36:02Speaker 2: you said, when you live with purpose, you never know emptiness.
- 36:05Speaker 2: And so many people live with what looks like a
- 36:07Speaker 2: great life, and they know emptiness so well. And so
- 36:10Speaker 2: I just want to remind people, we serve a great God.
- 36:13Speaker 2: He's good all the time. He's better than you can
- 36:15Speaker 2: hope for or imagine. He's able to do exceedingly abundantly
- 36:17Speaker 2: above more than you can ask, think, or imagine, like
- 36:19Speaker 2: it says in Ephesians 3. So I just want to
- 36:21Speaker 2: remind people, we serve a good and loving God. So Well,
- 36:25Speaker 2: I just felt like I wanted to put that in there, Gene,
- 36:27Speaker 2: because it's a revelation to me.
- 36:28Speaker 3: Get it.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Okay. So last thing here on what wrong endurance looks
- 36:32Speaker 1: like is a fear-based endurance. And maybe you're thinking like, well,
- 36:37Speaker 1: that's not me. I'm afraid that it's not going to
- 36:41Speaker 1: work out, but fear is certainly not what's keeping me going. Well,
- 36:44Speaker 1: what this turns in, a lot of people get stuck
- 36:46Speaker 1: in something because they're afraid of how difficult it's going
- 36:49Speaker 1: to be to change. Yeah. Right? This is... Yeah, so good.
- 36:52Speaker 1: I'm going to stay... I have a miserable known future... Um,
- 36:56Speaker 1: and to me, because I have a lack of courage,
- 36:58Speaker 1: it's better than an unknown future. Yeah.
- 37:00Speaker 2: It's our quote that we love from the newest matrix
- 37:02Speaker 2: where he says 99% of the people are stuck between
- 37:05Speaker 2: the fear of losing what they have and the fear
- 37:07Speaker 2: of going for what they really want.
- 37:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:09Speaker 2: I remember when he said that in the movie, I
- 37:11Speaker 2: was like, like that just jumped out at me.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Don't get stuck on the wrong path because you're afraid
- 37:18Speaker 1: of the price it's going to take to get onto
- 37:20Speaker 1: the right path. It's a fear-based endurance. So Miserable known
- 37:24Speaker 1: future to you is better than an unknown future. Anytime
- 37:28Speaker 1: fear is driving you, you're not going to like where
- 37:30Speaker 1: it takes you.
- 37:31Speaker 2: Ain't that the truth.
- 37:32Speaker 1: All right, G.
- 37:33Speaker 2: So that's what enduring for the wrong things looks like.
- 37:36Speaker 2: It's ego endurance. It's sunk costs. It's fear based. So
- 37:39Speaker 2: I think this is I'm excited for you to deliver this.
- 37:42Speaker 2: How to know you're enduring for the right thing. There
- 37:44Speaker 2: are some great filter questions because what you're really trying
- 37:47Speaker 2: to figure out is what's my motives, right? Because as
- 37:50Speaker 2: we've said, that's what's underlying this.
- 37:52Speaker 1: Again, it really comes like it's been some of my
- 37:55Speaker 1: revelation in my life. God doesn't care. It's from scripture.
- 37:58Speaker 1: God doesn't care what you do so much, near as
- 38:01Speaker 1: much as he cares why you do what you do.
- 38:04Speaker 1: And this is the same faith that took for you
- 38:07Speaker 1: to follow God. Like, hey, I just got to throw
- 38:09Speaker 1: myself into this. You got to have this ability to
- 38:12Speaker 1: keep putting yourself into the fire. And where many people,
- 38:15Speaker 1: you've got to understand, what does the opposition say to this?
- 38:17Speaker 1: People who oppose God. They say, I don't want to
- 38:21Speaker 1: believe in a God. I don't want to believe in
- 38:23Speaker 1: a God who thinks that the only way for him
- 38:26Speaker 1: to love me is that I would have to believe
- 38:29Speaker 1: in him without any of the evidence.
- 38:30Speaker 3: Right.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Okay. This is an argument of the opposition. And it's
- 38:35Speaker 1: easy to make an argument for one on something that
- 38:37Speaker 1: you've never experienced before. Or as the great poet Chris
- 38:43Speaker 1: Brown says, how are you going to hate from outside
- 38:45Speaker 1: the club? You can't even get in.
- 38:46Speaker 3: Boom. Boom.
- 38:48Speaker 1: I don't know why that popped in my head. I'm
- 38:49Speaker 1: glad it did. I thought it aligned well. But the
- 38:51Speaker 1: point being, that argument, one, they've never experienced it, but two, really,
- 38:57Speaker 1: here's the point that I wanted to make. You, like
- 39:01Speaker 1: when this is us, we do this, like this is
- 39:03Speaker 1: the opposition, this is the negative side, and I'm trying
- 39:06Speaker 1: to highlight it so you don't ever... You realize, I
- 39:09Speaker 1: don't wanna be that. It's people who aren't God trying
- 39:12Speaker 1: to define what glory is.
- 39:13Speaker 2: 100%. What can you really.
- 39:14Speaker 1: Like, truly... It's humans who can't even control their own
- 39:19Speaker 1: emotions trying to be the one who says, well, I
- 39:22Speaker 1: know better what good is. Goes all the way back
- 39:25Speaker 1: to the garden where Adam and Eve, they didn't eat
- 39:28Speaker 1: from the tree of evil. They didn't eat from the
- 39:30Speaker 1: tree of sin. They ate from the tree of the
- 39:33Speaker 1: knowledge of good and evil. So now instead of just
- 39:36Speaker 1: standing on what God says, now that you've eaten from
- 39:39Speaker 1: the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you say, well,
- 39:41Speaker 1: I should be able to say what good is. And
- 39:43Speaker 1: this is exactly the same argument that people make for
- 39:47Speaker 1: the most terrible argument murderous things happening in the world today,
- 39:51Speaker 1: such as abortion, well, the mother should be able to choose.
- 39:55Speaker 1: I should be able to say what's right. And this
- 39:58Speaker 1: is where you give up your life. This is where
- 40:01Speaker 1: you lose the opportunity to understand what God put you
- 40:04Speaker 1: on the earth for. You can keep saying you're right
- 40:06Speaker 1: all you want. It's never going to make it true.
- 40:08Speaker 1: And you'll just live a life of emptiness. So what
- 40:11Speaker 1: I'm saying is the other side of this is realizing
- 40:15Speaker 1: that the greatest thing I could ever experience, right? And
- 40:18Speaker 1: it's living a life of faith where, I don't know
- 40:21Speaker 1: if you've ever had this experience in your life. I
- 40:23Speaker 1: had this experience recently where I believed in something I
- 40:26Speaker 1: knew was right, and I had to wait years to
- 40:28Speaker 1: get the answer for it. And when you get the
- 40:30Speaker 1: answer for it, it's very fulfilling, okay? And this is
- 40:33Speaker 1: what God gives us the opportunity. Live for what you
- 40:35Speaker 1: know is right. Because the other side of that could
- 40:38Speaker 1: be like, hey, I'll just, you know, I'll force you
- 40:40Speaker 1: to love me. I'll fully reveal myself to you and
- 40:42Speaker 1: just tell you how I'm God. Then after that, because
- 40:45Speaker 1: you didn't choose it, you just have to believe me
- 40:48Speaker 1: when I tell you I'm a loving God. Or I'll
- 40:51Speaker 1: give you the chance to come to know me yourself.
- 40:53Speaker 1: I'll allow you to choose me. Then when you realize
- 40:57Speaker 1: who God is and you choose it yourself, you can
- 40:59Speaker 1: receive his love in a way that you never could
- 41:02Speaker 1: have if it was just forced upon you. That's no
- 41:04Speaker 1: real relationship. So God gives us... I'm just giving you
- 41:08Speaker 1: some understanding. Why does it have to be this way?
- 41:11Speaker 1: This is the best way it could be. God gives
- 41:13Speaker 1: you the opportunity... to choose to know Him, experience His love,
- 41:16Speaker 1: and come to be with Him, God gives you the opportunity,
- 41:18Speaker 1: the same thing with your purpose. Instead of it just
- 41:20Speaker 1: being forced upon you, showing you all of the plans
- 41:23Speaker 1: and telling you everything else you were gonna do was stupid,
- 41:26Speaker 1: God says, I'll give you the opportunity to know me
- 41:28Speaker 1: deeper through choosing a life and walking down a path
- 41:31Speaker 1: where the only way you'll get down to the end,
- 41:33Speaker 1: it's not performative, it's not about how high you can jump,
- 41:35Speaker 1: but how high can you jump when you trust me, right?
- 41:38Speaker 1: And so if you'll listen to me completely... If you'll
- 41:41Speaker 1: follow me, it's the only way that you can unlock
- 41:44Speaker 1: this door. The only key that will unlock the door
- 41:46Speaker 1: of your destiny is having faith. There's nothing else that
- 41:50Speaker 1: you can do. It's exactly what Jesus said to the Pharisees.
- 41:53Speaker 1: You're doing this for the wrong reasons. You think you
- 41:55Speaker 1: can perform your way into heaven. Yeah.
- 41:57Speaker 2: And what you said, G, so good, man. I have
- 42:01Speaker 2: thought about this. I wish we could see all the
- 42:04Speaker 2: alternative paths of running the scenarios, right? If we could
- 42:08Speaker 2: run them all And then realize that we're in the
- 42:10Speaker 2: best ones. I think it would give us such a
- 42:12Speaker 2: greater gratitude for how God operates because it's natural to
- 42:15Speaker 2: have questions. But the more I go on, the more
- 42:17Speaker 2: I realize how much God does things for our good.
- 42:20Speaker 2: Like you sit there and you go like, oh, well,
- 42:21Speaker 2: if you did it the way I want, actually that
- 42:23Speaker 2: wouldn't work out. Like I was talking, I had a
- 42:25Speaker 2: conversation with my little seven-year-old. And he was saying, I
- 42:29Speaker 2: don't think I would make a very good God. And
- 42:31Speaker 2: I was like, that's a really insightful comment for a seven-year-old.
- 42:35Speaker 2: So I'm walking into Academy Sports talking about how I'm like,
- 42:38Speaker 2: you know what? I'm glad God's God. And he's like, yeah,
- 42:39Speaker 2: we wouldn't be very good. I'm like, no, we wouldn't, man.
- 42:41Speaker 2: Because he was thinking about what he would do if
- 42:43Speaker 2: he was God.
- 42:43Speaker 1: He's like, I'd smash everything.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Well, 100%.
- 42:45Speaker 1: I mean, geez, yeah. We'd all be smote.
- 42:49Speaker 2: Like there'd be no world because he would smite us all,
- 42:52Speaker 2: as would I.
- 42:52Speaker 1: I would be a terrible God.
- 42:53Speaker 2: All right, Sajid, how to know?
- 42:54Speaker 1: How to know if I'm enduring for the right things?
- 42:56Speaker 1: What I've got here, again, this is a wisdom question
- 42:58Speaker 1: that you're asking. How do I know I'm going down
- 43:00Speaker 1: the right road?
- 43:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:01Speaker 1: Because really, it's the right reasons. Not am I doing
- 43:04Speaker 1: the right thing? Am I doing something for the right reasons?
- 43:06Speaker 1: So all I can do is try to give you
- 43:07Speaker 1: some wisdom. So I've got five tests here. I'm going
- 43:09Speaker 1: to explain these tests. These are tests for yourself. It's filters.
- 43:12Speaker 1: It's filters. how to look at yourself, how to look
- 43:14Speaker 1: at the path that you're walking down and say, okay,
- 43:17Speaker 1: am I doing the right thing? Not one of these
- 43:20Speaker 1: alone holds all of the, it's not entirely binary where
- 43:25Speaker 1: it's like, okay, if you failed test one, then you're
- 43:27Speaker 1: doing the wrong thing or you're doing the right thing.
- 43:29Speaker 1: But all of these should reveal it to you, make
- 43:31Speaker 1: it easier for you to understand, am I going in
- 43:33Speaker 1: the right direction or am I walking down the wrong path?
- 43:35Speaker 1: So here we go. Number one is the value test.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Something my dad said to me, so you can have
- 43:41Speaker 1: anything you want in life, if you're willing to pay
- 43:44Speaker 1: the price for it. It's part of the infinite potential unlock.
- 43:47Speaker 1: You can have anything you want if you're willing to
- 43:48Speaker 1: pay the price for it. So the question always is,
- 43:51Speaker 1: is the price worth it? Is the price worth it?
- 43:55Speaker 1: And so this really, it's a value test. It's a
- 43:58Speaker 1: value question. And the value changes based upon what you value.
- 44:05Speaker 1: This is like what I was talking about earlier, where
- 44:08Speaker 1: you're in this business, like, okay, I'll do this for
- 44:10Speaker 1: a year if it equals this. And so you have
- 44:14Speaker 1: predetermined the value of money. It's worth a year of work.
- 44:19Speaker 1: Then you've done a year of work and you did
- 44:21Speaker 1: not get the money and you're saying, well, it's not
- 44:23Speaker 1: worth the price anymore. You're going to quit. You're going
- 44:26Speaker 1: down the wrong road. So what you've got to have
- 44:29Speaker 1: is if you think about this and like if you'll
- 44:31Speaker 1: just sit down and do the math on this, you'll
- 44:33Speaker 1: realize that Money is the worst reason to do things.
- 44:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:36Speaker 1: Because the value of money is constantly going down and
- 44:38Speaker 1: everything keeps getting harder. Yeah. Right. So maybe I should
- 44:40Speaker 1: like think about that. Yeah. Value of money keeps going down,
- 44:42Speaker 1: but the things that I'm doing keep getting harder. You're
- 44:44Speaker 1: going to have to figure out how to multiply yourself.
- 44:46Speaker 1: The only way you're going to multiply yourself is through
- 44:48Speaker 1: doing something for the right reason and doing something that's
- 44:50Speaker 1: so meaningful. Yeah.
- 44:52Speaker 3: Right.
- 44:52Speaker 1: So the way that you're going to do, you're going
- 44:53Speaker 1: to pass the value test is what is the, on
- 44:57Speaker 1: the other end of the equation, on the other end
- 44:58Speaker 1: of the sum for you is something that's not money.
- 45:02Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly right. I, I, um, I have said no
- 45:06Speaker 2: to a lot of businesses because of that, man, because
- 45:08Speaker 2: I sit there and I go, you know what? Cause
- 45:10Speaker 2: you run a straight line equation.
- 45:11Speaker 1: Do you?
- 45:11Speaker 2: And like the thing that people are focused on, do
- 45:13Speaker 2: I want to, do I want all this money? Yes,
- 45:15Speaker 2: of course you do. But you misestimate the cost all
- 45:17Speaker 2: the time. That's why that's a great question to ask. Like,
- 45:20Speaker 2: is the price worth it? Hint, the price is way
- 45:22Speaker 2: more than you think it is twice as long as
- 45:24Speaker 2: twice as much.
- 45:25Speaker 1: Oh, that's exactly what happens to all these girls who
- 45:27Speaker 1: get into only fans.
- 45:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:28Speaker 1: Right. I think like one at A lot of them
- 45:31Speaker 1: realized they didn't even make the money. They thought, oh,
- 45:33Speaker 1: if I just post some pictures, I'm going to be
- 45:34Speaker 1: a millionaire. So many of them do, and they don't
- 45:37Speaker 1: really make any money. But even the ones who do,
- 45:39Speaker 1: they realize it cost them more than they thought it
- 45:41Speaker 1: was going to cost them because they were chasing the money.
- 45:45Speaker 1: I don't think there's a girl on the planet who
- 45:47Speaker 1: ever got into Oling fans and was like, man, this
- 45:48Speaker 1: has been my dream. I feel like this is what
- 45:50Speaker 1: I'm called to do. Every single one of them made
- 45:53Speaker 1: a dollars-based decision. Yeah.
- 45:55Speaker 2: We're not gonna do the interviews to find out, but
- 45:57Speaker 2: I'm sure there's somebody out there who does.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Praise the Lord.
- 45:59Speaker 2: Praise the Lord.
- 46:00Speaker 1: Somebody will.
- 46:00Speaker 2: Value test, number one. What's number two, G?
- 46:02Speaker 1: Number two is the motive test.
- 46:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:05Speaker 1: Okay, this is the test that asks, why are you here?
- 46:10Speaker 1: Why are you... Like, really, why are you here? This is...
- 46:15Speaker 1: I brought this up yesterday at Mighty Men, and it's
- 46:17Speaker 1: a good practice. Some people call it two chairs. I
- 46:20Speaker 1: just call it prayer. But you should think about when
- 46:24Speaker 1: you're praying... That you're sitting in the same room with
- 46:27Speaker 1: God and you're speaking to Him. And imagine God asked
- 46:31Speaker 1: you the question in the business that you're on. And remember,
- 46:35Speaker 1: God already knows the answer. But He asks you the question,
- 46:39Speaker 1: why are you here? Why are you doing this? Think
- 46:43Speaker 1: about what you would say. Because what you would say
- 46:46Speaker 1: to Him, you'll think about what's the thing you would
- 46:49Speaker 1: say to your best friend and what's the thing you
- 46:51Speaker 1: would say to your wife and what's the thing you'd
- 46:53Speaker 1: say to your pastor. And then you realize God already
- 46:56Speaker 1: knows none of those things were true. And he's looking
- 46:59Speaker 1: at you saying, why are you here? Yeah. And you're
- 47:02Speaker 1: going to have to answer the question for what it
- 47:04Speaker 1: really is. What are you really doing this for? Because
- 47:09Speaker 1: the reason I'm saying when you're talking to God is
- 47:11Speaker 1: it's the most beautiful thing. It's the scariest thing about God.
- 47:15Speaker 1: He knows what's in your heart. You may have fooled
- 47:17Speaker 1: everyone else, but you cannot fool him. Why are you
- 47:21Speaker 1: really doing this?
- 47:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:23Speaker 1: Like behind every explanation and statement you've ever made for
- 47:28Speaker 1: the business that you're running, for the thing that you're doing,
- 47:30Speaker 1: there's something deep in your heart. Do you want people,
- 47:33Speaker 1: because this is, I'll tell you, there's a superpower that
- 47:37Speaker 1: comes from operating with a pure heart. You get misunderstood
- 47:43Speaker 1: a lot early on, but the further you get down
- 47:45Speaker 1: the road, things keep getting better for you when you
- 47:49Speaker 1: operate with a pure heart, right? Like endurance begins to
- 47:52Speaker 1: pay off for you. It takes time for everybody to
- 47:55Speaker 1: see it. But when you operate with a pure heart,
- 47:57Speaker 1: it's like, wow, the only reason, the only way this
- 48:00Speaker 1: guy is still here is because he really believes in
- 48:02Speaker 1: this because he's way beyond rational thinking. And the further
- 48:06Speaker 1: you go with a pure heart, the better the results get.
- 48:09Speaker 1: But when you have a corrupt heart or when you're
- 48:11Speaker 1: doing it for a selfish reason, the further you go,
- 48:14Speaker 1: the more costly it gets and you realize you're stacking
- 48:16Speaker 1: weights over your head and you're waiting for it to fall. Yeah.
- 48:19Speaker 2: Now, what's so interesting about this question that you put
- 48:21Speaker 2: in here, and it just dawned on me when I
- 48:23Speaker 2: read the note for the third time, because obviously we
- 48:25Speaker 2: prepared this. God asked Elijah this in 1 Kings 19.
- 48:28Speaker 2: He goes, why are you here, Elijah? And this is
- 48:31Speaker 2: where we love where a fire happened, an earthquake, and
- 48:33Speaker 2: then he finally hears the thing, why are you here?
- 48:36Speaker 2: And Elijah lists off all the things he's done.
- 48:39Speaker 1: I've done this.
- 48:40Speaker 2: I've done that. And God just goes, okay, go, and
- 48:43Speaker 2: just sends him off. Doesn't acknowledge any of his stuff.
- 48:45Speaker 2: Doesn't go like, you know what, buddy? You're putting in
- 48:47Speaker 2: a good effort. I'm really proud of you. There's none
- 48:49Speaker 2: that's just like, hey, go anoint this guy. What's required
- 48:51Speaker 2: of you? Keep going. Like I'm not stopping to like say, oh,
- 48:54Speaker 2: it's so tough. And you gave a great question because
- 48:57Speaker 2: this is a good filter.
- 48:57Speaker 1: There's a question that goes with this for the motive test, okay?
- 49:00Speaker 1: This is one that, again, it's not, this isn't, I'm
- 49:04Speaker 1: not judging you. I'm not the one testing you. This
- 49:06Speaker 1: is between you and God. You can ask yourself this question, okay?
- 49:09Speaker 1: But I think this is, I'm pulling out the highlighter here.
- 49:13Speaker 1: I'm pausing for a second because if you're listening to
- 49:16Speaker 1: this cause you're waiting for like, Garrett's going to say
- 49:19Speaker 1: something that's going to help me answer this question of
- 49:23Speaker 1: how do I know if I'm going down the, if
- 49:25Speaker 1: I'm enduring for the right reason or if what I'm
- 49:28Speaker 1: enduring for is stupid. Let me ask you this question.
- 49:32Speaker 1: If nobody knew, okay. If nobody knew and you could
- 49:37Speaker 1: just erase it from everyone's mind, Think about where you're
- 49:40Speaker 1: at in your business. Either you go forward or you quit.
- 49:43Speaker 1: If nobody knew and you could just erase it from
- 49:45Speaker 1: everyone's mind and your problems would go away, your problems
- 49:51Speaker 1: would go away, what would you choose?
- 49:54Speaker 2: Man, that is a killer. I think you're saying about business,
- 49:57Speaker 2: I think that's easy in business. And you know where
- 49:59Speaker 2: I think that's hard is when you're in a marriage
- 50:00Speaker 2: that's tough. Maybe you found Jesus and your partner didn't
- 50:06Speaker 2: or insert whatever circumstances. That's where I think this was
- 50:09Speaker 2: a real, this reveals your motives massively because I can
- 50:13Speaker 2: just speak from my own end. Whenever I was going
- 50:14Speaker 2: through a tough time with Rhian, I'd be lying if
- 50:16Speaker 2: I said that I didn't think about what my parents
- 50:18Speaker 2: and everybody that I cared about would say, because I
- 50:20Speaker 2: knew they would be against me whenever I wanted to quit.
- 50:23Speaker 1: And that's, yeah. And you, you stayed in it because
- 50:26Speaker 1: for in, you know, at least in a momentary decision,
- 50:28Speaker 1: you stayed in it because you're like, well, if I,
- 50:30Speaker 1: if I try to quit, everyone's going to be mad
- 50:31Speaker 1: at me. Right.
- 50:32Speaker 2: And in that case, it helped me stay in for
- 50:34Speaker 2: a slight moment, but man, I, I, you know, if
- 50:37Speaker 2: you're in a place where you can really examine yourself
- 50:38Speaker 2: and hold yourself up to the light and that's, and
- 50:40Speaker 2: it is a selfish move, it's not, we're not saying
- 50:43Speaker 2: now it's okay to quit. What we're saying is like, man,
- 50:44Speaker 2: you need to get with God. You need to get
- 50:46Speaker 2: with some brothers. You need to like examine yourself because, uh, you're,
- 50:50Speaker 2: you're drawing on a fuel that's not going to last.
- 50:52Speaker 2: Mine lasted for a moment. Thank God that God enacted
- 50:55Speaker 2: the way that he did. But yeah, that is a
- 50:56Speaker 2: massive question. Say that again, G.
- 50:58Speaker 1: If nobody knew, nobody knew if you could erase it
- 51:02Speaker 1: from everyone's mind, right? Whether you, whether you like, if,
- 51:05Speaker 1: like say you're in this business and you're like, man,
- 51:07Speaker 1: I just feel like it's really not worth it, but
- 51:11Speaker 1: I don't want to be a quitter. You know, and
- 51:13Speaker 1: Garrett keeps telling me I got to endure all the
- 51:14Speaker 1: time and I got to keep going. But if you
- 51:16Speaker 1: could erase it from everyone's mind and just start over
- 51:19Speaker 1: on something else and, you know, erase the business, erase
- 51:23Speaker 1: the problems that you created that come with it, you know,
- 51:26Speaker 1: if you could erase it all, what would you choose? Right.
- 51:28Speaker 2: Now, if somebody says they would choose to erase it,
- 51:30Speaker 2: what would you say to them?
- 51:31Speaker 1: I would say you might be enduring for the wrong reasons.
- 51:33Speaker 3: Right.
- 51:34Speaker 2: And so the answer, like we said, is, It.
- 51:35Speaker 1: Doesn't, well, I'm glad you asked that question. Okay. It
- 51:40Speaker 1: doesn't always mean like, oh, well, if my motives are wrong,
- 51:42Speaker 1: then I should just quit.
- 51:43Speaker 3: Right.
- 51:44Speaker 1: What it means is maybe you need to shift your motives. Right.
- 51:47Speaker 1: And that's exactly it. You need to do some heart work.
- 51:49Speaker 1: You need to get on your knees. And this is where,
- 51:52Speaker 1: because when I have this conversation personally with people that
- 51:55Speaker 1: I work with them in their business, I work with
- 51:58Speaker 1: a lot of men who get stuck in this situation.
- 52:00Speaker 1: And most of the times, it's not actually us changing
- 52:03Speaker 1: what they're doing. It's changing their heart and what they're doing.
- 52:05Speaker 2: Yeah, of course.
- 52:06Speaker 1: You might be doing the right thing for the wrong reasons,
- 52:09Speaker 1: and it's going to feel like the wrong thing.
- 52:11Speaker 2: Yeah, very good. All right, what's number three, G?
- 52:13Speaker 1: Number three is the fruit test, okay? Number three is
- 52:17Speaker 1: the fruit test. And what is the fruit? Well, A,
- 52:20Speaker 1: what is this producing? What's the business producing? But more importantly,
- 52:24Speaker 1: what is this producing in me, right? Right. Consider it
- 52:27Speaker 1: joy when you face struggles of many kinds. So all
- 52:29Speaker 1: the stuff going on in your life, not just your business,
- 52:31Speaker 1: when you face struggles of many kinds, because this is
- 52:34Speaker 1: an opportunity for your endurance to grow. That's your fruit, right?
- 52:39Speaker 1: What's the whole scripture about there? All that stuff you
- 52:42Speaker 1: got going on out there, cool. You know what it's
- 52:45Speaker 1: going to do? It's going to make you better. The
- 52:47Speaker 1: fruit test is, what is this producing in me? Is
- 52:51Speaker 1: this making me better? One of the things that has
- 52:54Speaker 1: been a confirmation for me in the season that I've
- 52:56Speaker 1: been through, because the last two years have really been
- 52:58Speaker 1: some of the most difficult, certainly in the business world,
- 53:01Speaker 1: trials I've ever been through in my life. It's made
- 53:03Speaker 1: me better. And that's how I know. That's one of
- 53:06Speaker 1: the confirmations for me that I know I'm doing what
- 53:09Speaker 1: I'm supposed to be doing. When it's crushing you from
- 53:12Speaker 1: the inside out, when it's tearing apart every other area
- 53:15Speaker 1: of your life, then that's an indicator for you. You're
- 53:18Speaker 1: either doing the wrong thing or you're doing the right
- 53:20Speaker 1: thing for the wrong reasons.
- 53:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:22Speaker 2: I think that that right there, the what is this
- 53:24Speaker 2: producing in and around me, is such a great endurance.
- 53:26Speaker 2: Because God's so much more interested in developing who we
- 53:29Speaker 2: are than getting some outcome, because he can make any
- 53:32Speaker 2: outcome come about. He's God. And so when you start
- 53:34Speaker 2: to understand what things are producing in you, I think
- 53:37Speaker 2: that's how you consider things joy.
- 53:39Speaker 1: The only thing he can control everything, and the only
- 53:42Speaker 1: thing he chooses not to control is us.
- 53:44Speaker 3: Right.
- 53:45Speaker 1: And the thing that he cares most about is the
- 53:47Speaker 1: thing that he says, I'm going to give you the
- 53:49Speaker 1: space to do this yourself. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 53:52Speaker 2: Why?
- 53:52Speaker 1: Because he cares about us. It's not a relationship with
- 53:56Speaker 1: him if he forces us to be a certain way. Yeah.
- 53:59Speaker 2: And like I said, you can find joy. I remember
- 54:01Speaker 2: the first time something difficult happened at work. And I
- 54:04Speaker 2: remember I got excited because I saw it as an
- 54:07Speaker 2: opportunity to grow and learn. And I realized something was
- 54:09Speaker 2: changing in me because I was like, before I'd have
- 54:11Speaker 2: been like, man, I hate this. Why does it have
- 54:13Speaker 2: to be this way? This person is such a pain.
- 54:15Speaker 2: And instead I was like, you know what? This is
- 54:17Speaker 2: such an opportunity for me to grow. That was a
- 54:20Speaker 2: real becoming moment for me. And I think that that
- 54:22Speaker 2: question was producing in me is such an endurance thought process.
- 54:25Speaker 2: So if you can answer that with joy, man, what
- 54:28Speaker 2: a win.
- 54:28Speaker 1: All right, G, what do you love? So again, not
- 54:31Speaker 1: one of these questions alone should answer it for you,
- 54:34Speaker 1: but I would encourage you to answer all five of
- 54:37Speaker 1: these questions. And then this will not, by thinking through
- 54:40Speaker 1: each of these, answering all of these, it's gonna inform
- 54:44Speaker 1: your compass. You're gonna get your compass pointed correctly so
- 54:47Speaker 1: you can make a better decision. Number four is the
- 54:51Speaker 1: wise counsel test. What do the people that I trust,
- 54:56Speaker 1: and you listen to people, and we have a whole
- 55:00Speaker 1: podcast on this, on teachers and heroes and mentors. In
- 55:05Speaker 1: this context, I would say this is one that you
- 55:08Speaker 1: want to listen to your mentors on. Because following a
- 55:12Speaker 1: teacher or following a hero might have gotten you down
- 55:14Speaker 1: the road that you're on. And again, I'm not saying
- 55:17Speaker 1: that you're necessarily that you're doing the wrong thing, But
- 55:19Speaker 1: on the, am I doing the right thing for the
- 55:21Speaker 1: right reasons here? You want to talk to one of
- 55:23Speaker 1: your mentors. So what episode is that, Nick?
- 55:26Speaker 3: 145.
- 55:26Speaker 1: I'm glad you asked. So episode 145 is a great one.
- 55:29Speaker 1: Make sure you're listening to a mentor on this. But
- 55:31Speaker 1: this is the wise counsel test. And what do those people,
- 55:34Speaker 1: and this, again, I'm telling you, this should be mentors.
- 55:37Speaker 1: What do mentors that you trust, what do they see? Yeah, good.
- 55:41Speaker 2: What's the last one?
- 55:42Speaker 1: Those mentors are going to be able to point out
- 55:44Speaker 1: to you the things that you don't see. Because they
- 55:47Speaker 1: know you, they care about you. and they're a mentor
- 55:50Speaker 1: in your life because a lot of them have been
- 55:52Speaker 1: down the roads that you're trying to go down. And
- 55:54Speaker 1: so when you can hear from one of those people,
- 55:56Speaker 1: that's when they're going to be able to point out, well, like,
- 55:59Speaker 1: you know, how are you handling this issue? Or what
- 56:01Speaker 1: are you doing about that situation? And when you start
- 56:03Speaker 1: to explain yourself, a mentor should be able to tell
- 56:07Speaker 1: you that's a wrong motive. Yeah, big time. Okay, and
- 56:10Speaker 1: then the last one here, number five is the faithfulness test.
- 56:14Speaker 1: The test is always faithfulness. The test is always faithfulness.
- 56:19Speaker 1: And sometimes you're frustrated because you're looking too far down
- 56:25Speaker 1: the road. Yeah. Okay.
- 56:26Speaker 2: Like, well, what if it's.
- 56:27Speaker 1: Going to take too long and I'm not going to
- 56:29Speaker 1: have this and this could happen and all that. Okay.
- 56:33Speaker 1: That's called anxiety. Yeah. Right. Let's just slow down a
- 56:36Speaker 1: second and come back to today. This is what God
- 56:39Speaker 1: has called you to do. Be faithful with what's in
- 56:41Speaker 1: your hand. What's in your hand is not tomorrow. What's
- 56:45Speaker 1: in your hand is today. What does faithfulness look like today? Okay.
- 56:49Speaker 1: Because maybe what you've been spending way too much of
- 56:53Speaker 1: your time doing is each day you're trying to figure
- 56:57Speaker 1: out how to make tomorrow not be so painful. Yeah.
- 57:00Speaker 1: And you do that enough days in a row, your
- 57:02Speaker 1: tomorrows keep getting harder and harder and harder because you
- 57:05Speaker 1: stopped being faithful. The question you need to ask yourself is,
- 57:09Speaker 1: what does faithfulness look like today? I've got a big
- 57:12Speaker 1: question that I don't know the answer to, and it's
- 57:14Speaker 1: a scary question, but that's not what faithfulness looks like today.
- 57:18Speaker 1: How do I be faithful? today with what I'm called
- 57:20Speaker 1: to and where this should lead to for you. When
- 57:24Speaker 1: you think through all of these questions, I'm not saying
- 57:27Speaker 1: you can never quit. You want to quit for the
- 57:29Speaker 1: right reasons. You want to quit when you've gained the clarity.
- 57:33Speaker 1: You don't want to quit when you've run out of courage.
- 57:34Speaker 1: You don't want to quit when you've gotten tired. Those
- 57:37Speaker 1: are the quits that will not help you become who
- 57:40Speaker 1: you're called to be. And those are the quits that
- 57:42Speaker 1: you'll regret. You can quit when you've gained the clarity.
- 57:45Speaker 1: You can quit when you realize, okay, I got into
- 57:47Speaker 1: this for the wrong reasons. This isn't the best use
- 57:50Speaker 1: of my abilities. My mentors have helped me see some things.
- 57:53Speaker 1: I don't like who this is helping me become. And
- 57:56Speaker 1: I actually, out of that, now I realize what God's
- 57:59Speaker 1: put me on the earth to do. And I was
- 58:01Speaker 1: pursuing this just for the sake of money. You can
- 58:03Speaker 1: quit those things, but you want to endure. You want
- 58:06Speaker 1: to endure because you have conviction. You can say, regardless
- 58:09Speaker 1: of what I've been through, like Paul says, letting go
- 58:11Speaker 1: of what's behind and pressing on towards what's ahead. I
- 58:14Speaker 1: have conviction. I believe in what I'm doing. So I'm
- 58:16Speaker 1: going to endure and endure as long as it takes.
- 58:19Speaker 1: I'm not going to lose endurance or I'm not going
- 58:21Speaker 1: to have endurance because I'm afraid to admit that I'm wrong.
- 58:25Speaker 1: I'm going to keep going. I'm going to run the
- 58:28Speaker 1: race that God has set before me because God has
- 58:30Speaker 1: put me on the earth for a great reason and
- 58:32Speaker 1: I know what I'm called to do.
