- 1:32Speaker 1: Simon Hunter, professional better from the Fighting City of Philadelphia.
- 1:37Speaker 1: What's going on? Brother? A little hunger over this morning.
- 1:40Speaker 1: But I'm a trooper. I'm here after an old concert
- 1:43Speaker 1: last night. I'm here to talk about movies. Listen, there's
- 1:47Speaker 1: we're We're combining a lot of themes today. You are
- 1:51Speaker 1: a son of Philadelphia. You love that city. I will
- 1:56Speaker 1: be in Philadelphia tomorrow. You and I will be in
- 1:59Speaker 1: Philadelphia together. I have come to love and appreciate Philadelphia
- 2:04Speaker 1: in ways I had never before, living in New York
- 2:07Speaker 1: forever and going to Philadelphia for work and things like that.
- 2:12Speaker 1: But now my kids at Drexel, and he's just spent
- 2:14Speaker 1: the past year there. So I've been to Philly probably
- 2:16Speaker 1: four or five times. Love going think it's an amazing city.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Have a blast. They're going to pick him up tomorrow
- 2:23Speaker 1: or Saturday, going to be with you tomorrow night. It's
- 2:25Speaker 1: a movie season. There is a new movie out called
- 2:27Speaker 1: Hustle with Adam Sandler that was written and executive produced
- 2:32Speaker 1: by a very good friend of the podcast, Will Fetters,
- 2:34Speaker 1: Academy Award nominee for A Star Is Born, which he
- 2:38Speaker 1: wrote with Bradley Cooper. Will came on the podcast a
- 2:41Speaker 1: few years ago to talk about it, talk about the
- 2:43Speaker 1: Academy Awards, all that kind of stuff. He worked on
- 2:46Speaker 1: this movie, Hustle. He's going to fill us in on
- 2:48Speaker 1: how the movie came together. We're gonna talk to him
- 2:50Speaker 1: about our favorite gambling movies. This podcast is meant to
- 2:55Speaker 1: give you something to do in the summer months. You
- 2:58Speaker 1: want to hang out why and some good movies. And
- 3:01Speaker 1: it takes place in Philadelphia. Sign in the City of
- 3:05Speaker 1: Love for you, not even brotherly love, just the city
- 3:07Speaker 1: of Love. I mean as a Philadelphia we can say
- 3:09Speaker 1: it's the city of Freedom. It's the birthplace of American freedom.
- 3:12Speaker 1: So every time someone talks about Philadelphia, say you hate freedom?
- 3:16Speaker 1: All right, brother, where do you think that we're done?
- 3:21Speaker 1: Tell me phil Delfia Freedom. So yeah, I loved that.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Will use the Philadelphia his backbone for this whole movie.
- 3:32Speaker 1: I mean the first scene Adam Sandlers literally wearing a
- 3:35Speaker 1: seventy sixers jumpsuit, and you know me, I was like, okay,
- 3:39Speaker 1: I'm in so yeah, it's a Philadelphia native. That was
- 3:41Speaker 1: very big to my ego. Dude, will Is on will
- 3:44Speaker 1: Is on will Is Podcast right now, will Federally my
- 3:49Speaker 1: trial return. I'm doing good man. How you guys doing.
- 3:55Speaker 1: We're good? Thanks for coming on. We were talking about
- 3:57Speaker 1: the movie and there's a lot of stuff I want
- 3:59Speaker 1: to get to. Um. Yes, yes, I did write this
- 4:02Speaker 1: movie just so you would have me back on the podcast.
- 4:05Speaker 1: That is why I wrote it. I sought out the job.
- 4:07Speaker 1: I was like, how do I once again feel this
- 4:09Speaker 1: glorious feeling of validation and uh and come back on.
- 4:13Speaker 1: And so two years later, here we are, brother. In
- 4:16Speaker 1: two years, I do want let's let's let's level set.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Let me let me give the listeners some structure to
- 4:24Speaker 1: this podcast. I mentioned before you jumped on that, Uh,
- 4:29Speaker 1: you had written The Star Was Born with Bradley Cooper
- 4:32Speaker 1: nominated for an Academy Award. At that time, your career
- 4:37Speaker 1: was starting to explode. We are a couple of years later, Uh,
- 4:41Speaker 1: and you're just jetting back from Philadelphia for the premier
- 4:45Speaker 1: of Hustle with Adam Salon, which you wrote, co wrote
- 4:48Speaker 1: an executive produced. Um and give us the rundown. What
- 4:53Speaker 1: has been happening for the past two years? How does
- 4:55Speaker 1: being nominated for an Academy award accelerate your career? You're
- 5:00Speaker 1: what changes? What is remarkably similar? It will be the
- 5:05Speaker 1: writer's kind of a funny thing. We always have plausible
- 5:08Speaker 1: deniability when movies don't work, and so you know, I
- 5:12Speaker 1: I would say my career as far as like within
- 5:15Speaker 1: the industry, people knew I was pretty good at my job.
- 5:18Speaker 1: They're just saying, like, nobody has ever made a good
- 5:20Speaker 1: movie from a bad script, but plenty of people made
- 5:23Speaker 1: bad movies from good script. So with the exception of
- 5:26Speaker 1: one of my movies, like the script, every time I
- 5:28Speaker 1: thought I had a chance to be pretty good and
- 5:31Speaker 1: and then you know, they don't always come together. I
- 5:33Speaker 1: kind of like I would liken it too. I was
- 5:34Speaker 1: trying to think of an analogy, and it was like
- 5:37Speaker 1: like an NBA role player, like somebody that like if
- 5:40Speaker 1: you're a GM you know like certain players are gonna
- 5:43Speaker 1: give you, give you what you need in the playoffs like,
- 5:46Speaker 1: and those players tend to always end up on teams
- 5:48Speaker 1: like you could argue Milwaukee's not we're not in the
- 5:51Speaker 1: championship right now because they wouldn't pay PJ talk. So
- 5:53Speaker 1: I feel like as far as within the business, the
- 5:55Speaker 1: jobs I get didn't change. But I will say directly
- 5:57Speaker 1: related to stars when I think it's how I got
- 6:00Speaker 1: pulled into this. Um. I's got a call from Adam.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Adam Sandler's one of his agents because he as you
- 6:07Speaker 1: can imagine as a team who used to be my agent.
- 6:10Speaker 1: And he was like, you like basketball, right, And I
- 6:12Speaker 1: was like, I sure do. And I think you know,
- 6:14Speaker 1: if you've seen you guys seen the movie, there's definitely
- 6:16Speaker 1: some Stars Born Is parallels to it. Um So, I
- 6:19Speaker 1: think from what just fit wise, Adam and loved the
- 6:22Speaker 1: movie and then we met and talked and hit it
- 6:24Speaker 1: off and and one of my first one of my
- 6:26Speaker 1: first like pitches was we need to change this to Philadelphia.
- 6:29Speaker 1: So now we're here, so let me also frame it.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Adam Sandler plays a long time NBA scout for the
- 6:38Speaker 1: Sixers who's basically tasked with needing to find one last
- 6:46Speaker 1: star that can help the Sixers become a championship level team,
- 6:50Speaker 1: and it takes him around the world to find this
- 6:54Speaker 1: one star Uh played by NBA player launch Hernan Gomez Um,
- 7:01Speaker 1: who he discovers on a playground in Spain, and then
- 7:04Speaker 1: the movie takes off from there about him trying to
- 7:06Speaker 1: get him back to the United States into the NBA.
- 7:10Speaker 1: UM why did you set it in Philadelphia? Well, I
- 7:15Speaker 1: don't if you I'm sure Simon knows this, but paying
- 7:18Speaker 1: attention to the Sixers front office for the last few years,
- 7:20Speaker 1: there was only one place that I could say it now.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I mean I wanted to say in Philadelphia because I
- 7:25Speaker 1: grew up a Womanton, Delaware. You know, it's like the Newark,
- 7:27Speaker 1: New Jersey of of to New York is how it
- 7:30Speaker 1: is for us in Delaware. We don't have much of
- 7:32Speaker 1: the Philadelphia teams, are it. That was twenty minutes from
- 7:34Speaker 1: the stadiums growing up, so that's where I always went.
- 7:36Speaker 1: And I mean I did think the character of the story,
- 7:39Speaker 1: like knowing it was gonna be about underdogs trying to
- 7:42Speaker 1: grind and having, you know, to get their shot to
- 7:45Speaker 1: just fit. And you know what, in Hollywood, you you
- 7:48Speaker 1: tend to have like like Adam's Adam is super cool,
- 7:50Speaker 1: but he loved the idea. But it ultimately does come
- 7:53Speaker 1: down to like, where's what's going to be the tax
- 7:55Speaker 1: credit and you know, things like that, and one funny thing,
- 7:58Speaker 1: because I don't I don't want to give anything away.
- 7:59Speaker 1: You you guys appreciate it because you've seen it. But
- 8:02Speaker 1: I I genuinely wrote the the ending, you know, where
- 8:07Speaker 1: there's you know, a certain team ends up prevailing over
- 8:11Speaker 1: another team, and I had I had chosen, I'd say, well,
- 8:15Speaker 1: there's you don't talk about. I would say that that
- 8:18Speaker 1: was something that I had written in and it just
- 8:21Speaker 1: it worked out that Lancha was playing for that team
- 8:23Speaker 1: at the time, so that was meant to be UM.
- 8:26Speaker 1: So yeah, it was. It was just kind of it
- 8:29Speaker 1: just fit. And you know, I I knew a movie
- 8:30Speaker 1: like this was gonna need a real the real character
- 8:34Speaker 1: of a city behind it. You know, all due respect
- 8:36Speaker 1: to l A, but I just felt really fit. And
- 8:40Speaker 1: I just one of my little things I love in movies.
- 8:42Speaker 1: It's just a little details of movies and I just
- 8:44Speaker 1: want to know if this is based on a true story.
- 8:47Speaker 1: When he when Adam Wyn saw um Cruise playing, he
- 8:51Speaker 1: was wearing the work shoes, like the construction shoes. Is
- 8:54Speaker 1: that based off anything real like him playing in those
- 8:55Speaker 1: tims because off my memories I I can tell you
- 8:59Speaker 1: I've seen is in Philly too, playing in Timberland's a
- 9:03Speaker 1: steel toe boots. I would love to know if that's
- 9:05Speaker 1: like one of those things that inspiration from Philadelphia Itselfer,
- 9:09Speaker 1: is that a scout telling you a story about a
- 9:11Speaker 1: guy he was checking out and so him in those
- 9:12Speaker 1: kind of shoes. No, much like you, I've actually seen
- 9:15Speaker 1: that before. Um, I've played and pick up, like going
- 9:18Speaker 1: to a pickup court and seen a dude in Jimberland's
- 9:21Speaker 1: and they're always the best player on the court. And uh,
- 9:24Speaker 1: And it happened to work out that, you know, that
- 9:26Speaker 1: the construction worker thing and having him obviously his bows
- 9:30Speaker 1: life got off track at a certain point and so yeah,
- 9:33Speaker 1: it just worked out. And also I have a good
- 9:35Speaker 1: friend of now we always text with like big NBA fans,
- 9:38Speaker 1: and you know, I remember just describing Tony Allen in
- 9:42Speaker 1: uh in the we bet the Grizz. I think this
- 9:45Speaker 1: on the podcast one of the times I bet the
- 9:46Speaker 1: Griz to beat the the Warriors, and it was the
- 9:49Speaker 1: game it was right before the game where Tony got
- 9:51Speaker 1: left on an island to shoot. Steve Kerr just isolated
- 9:54Speaker 1: him and he couldn't make anything. But we're describing Tony
- 9:57Speaker 1: Allen is like he's like the dude and he's an
- 10:00Speaker 1: NBA version of like the guy who shows up at
- 10:01Speaker 1: the pickup court with like paint stained pants and like
- 10:05Speaker 1: a bottle of gatorade that doesn't have gatorade in it
- 10:07Speaker 1: and like clearly just got off work wearing wear boots
- 10:10Speaker 1: and then just goes out on the court and it
- 10:11Speaker 1: destroys everyone for two hours. No one can do anything
- 10:14Speaker 1: against him. Just there's a toughness to him. So yeah,
- 10:17Speaker 1: that's definitely based off something I've really seen the It's
- 10:21Speaker 1: funny you describe him that way. My kid and I
- 10:24Speaker 1: my kid who I watched the movie with last night,
- 10:26Speaker 1: he's fifteen. Uh, he loved it. Totally predicted the ending
- 10:31Speaker 1: by the way, like as specific specifically the as as
- 10:38Speaker 1: at the end of the movie, Like I'm not going
- 10:39Speaker 1: to give it away, but uh, Doc Rivers Adam Sandler,
- 10:45Speaker 1: they're walking out of the tunnel for the Sixers, and
- 10:49Speaker 1: my son predicted what was going to happen next when
- 10:53Speaker 1: they got onto the court predicted it. Um. But we
- 10:58Speaker 1: always talk about like who do you be a guys
- 11:01Speaker 1: that you wouldn't they look terrible in the NBA. But
- 11:06Speaker 1: if you showed up at the y m c A
- 11:09Speaker 1: in Albany, New York, they're gonna be playing and you're
- 11:14Speaker 1: not gonna know who they are and you're not gonna
- 11:15Speaker 1: know Why is this person dominating for us? You mentioned
- 11:19Speaker 1: it was Tony Allen. For us, it was Denzel Valentine.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Like we'd watch all the Bulls games. Denzel Valentine would
- 11:24Speaker 1: be nothing in the NBA, but he had a really
- 11:26Speaker 1: good career Player of the Year in Michigan State. You
- 11:29Speaker 1: would not think he could play, and then he shows
- 11:31Speaker 1: up at the y and he's just crushing it. That's
- 11:34Speaker 1: that's the question. The distance between I think I'm gonna
- 11:38Speaker 1: I'm gonna credit the person who said this. I heard
- 11:40Speaker 1: Brian Scalabrini say on some podcast interview because people like
- 11:46Speaker 1: because he's the classic guy that people talk ship like
- 11:48Speaker 1: they think they can beat him, and and he staid, um,
- 11:52Speaker 1: regarding all and viet non NBA players who play in
- 11:55Speaker 1: the streetball games, He's like, you don't understand guys, I
- 11:58Speaker 1: am much closer to Lebron James than you are to me.
- 12:02Speaker 1: And that is every NBA guy is so far removed,
- 12:05Speaker 1: like the speed of the game, the mental side of
- 12:08Speaker 1: the game, like the way that they like he defensively.
- 12:12Speaker 1: For him to survive on the NBA, he had to
- 12:14Speaker 1: be able to read and react. And so he figures
- 12:17Speaker 1: he'll figure you out after two times if you handling
- 12:20Speaker 1: the ball, and then you'll never get by him again
- 12:21Speaker 1: because as soon as you start to go right, he's
- 12:23Speaker 1: already gone, you know. And he's six nine and two sixties.
- 12:26Speaker 1: So yeah, there's there's literally nobody who plays in the
- 12:29Speaker 1: NBA that they couldn't destroy in the pickup court because
- 12:34Speaker 1: that was that ended up being a popular series right
- 12:37Speaker 1: where people would try to challenge him and he would
- 12:39Speaker 1: just do a lot of that was in the movie.
- 12:44Speaker 1: So I mentioned Hernon Gomez. Why don't you Hernan Gomez
- 12:48Speaker 1: who was great in the movie. He plays Boa Cruz,
- 12:50Speaker 1: who was the guy that Adam Sandler discovers. And uh so,
- 12:56Speaker 1: first I'm gonna have two questions here. But the first
- 12:58Speaker 1: question is how did he end up in the movie? Man?
- 13:02Speaker 1: He's he was so incredible on his tape. So the
- 13:05Speaker 1: funny thing about this, We're not funny. Nothing's funny about
- 13:07Speaker 1: the pandemic, but the way the timing of it, which
- 13:09Speaker 1: was kind of crazy. So I I got that, I
- 13:12Speaker 1: got the call from my old agent probably and the January,
- 13:16Speaker 1: and I met Adam within the week. And then Adam
- 13:19Speaker 1: and I hit it off right away. We we he
- 13:21Speaker 1: knew because we had to start from page one. I
- 13:23Speaker 1: mean the movie was said, the other script was said
- 13:25Speaker 1: in China. It was like a whole other thing. Um,
- 13:28Speaker 1: so we Adam has loved the idea of playing a scout,
- 13:30Speaker 1: and he was in Lebron and Maverick were producing that script.
- 13:32Speaker 1: So it's just a good fit. But we had a
- 13:34Speaker 1: ton I had a ton of work to do. I
- 13:35Speaker 1: started from scratch, changing everything for the city and all
- 13:38Speaker 1: that stuff. And so he wanted to make it his
- 13:41Speaker 1: summer movie. He didn't have. And Adams one of those
- 13:43Speaker 1: dudes that just like always has to be working like
- 13:45Speaker 1: he can't. It's it's he's just an incredibly productive person.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Makes makes me feel lazy. Um, but he so I
- 13:53Speaker 1: was like got the gig, and then I wrote the
- 13:56Speaker 1: entire thing in like six weeks, like from like the
- 13:59Speaker 1: beginning of Februar wherey and obviously it's an NBA movie
- 14:02Speaker 1: set in Europe, and I should you know, I sent
- 14:05Speaker 1: the script to Adam and that day they closed to
- 14:08Speaker 1: Europe and then I sent them the next day. By
- 14:10Speaker 1: the time Netflix they ready, they closed the NBA, so
- 14:13Speaker 1: or that was inverted one of those two things, and
- 14:15Speaker 1: so everything stopped. And so that's kind of how we
- 14:18Speaker 1: ended up with Launcho because we had we had a
- 14:20Speaker 1: script that was basically greenlit and I'd say what's on
- 14:24Speaker 1: screen was probably in that draft, maybe seventy five and
- 14:27Speaker 1: then we were like, you know, incrementally working on it.
- 14:29Speaker 1: And they got the director Jeremiah, who did a fantastic job,
- 14:32Speaker 1: and he comes on and then they started looking for
- 14:35Speaker 1: the guy and so they had him put himself on tape.
- 14:39Speaker 1: And yeah, we were on Zoom, like you know, every day,
- 14:42Speaker 1: all three of us meet, jem I and Adam just
- 14:43Speaker 1: kind of going over stuff. And in that context, um,
- 14:47Speaker 1: when Lantcho's tape came through, Jeremiah wanted me to look
- 14:51Speaker 1: at it immediately because they just knew he was. He's
- 14:53Speaker 1: incredibly good in the movie and it's funny as great
- 14:56Speaker 1: as his performance is it. There's other stuff that's not
- 14:59Speaker 1: in the movie, be that you would. I mean, he's
- 15:01Speaker 1: really a tremendous actor, and everybody was trying to fear Alex.
- 15:04Speaker 1: What's he gonna do next? And he just you know,
- 15:06Speaker 1: he doesn't really want to do anything next. You wants
- 15:08Speaker 1: to be an NBA player, So I hope you'll do
- 15:11Speaker 1: something someday. But also I don't want to see him
- 15:12Speaker 1: like randomly in a Marvel movie, So I'll take him
- 15:15Speaker 1: just I hope he I hope he sticks to that.
- 15:19Speaker 1: I did love in the movie. These are some technical questions,
- 15:23Speaker 1: but a lot of the language was very natural, right
- 15:27Speaker 1: and sort of sam that I would have a line
- 15:30Speaker 1: he's married to clean the teeth in the movie. I
- 15:33Speaker 1: thought their relationship was great. The way they interacted each
- 15:36Speaker 1: other interacted with each other was fantastic. Um, how many
- 15:40Speaker 1: of those lines end up being scripted? And how many
- 15:43Speaker 1: of those are Adam Sandler just sort of throwing something
- 15:46Speaker 1: in off of various takes a lot of them were scripted,
- 15:49Speaker 1: And I'm not I don't just say that like there
- 15:52Speaker 1: was there's definitely improv but Adams really really talented actor.
- 15:56Speaker 1: And I will say this too, from a meta standpoint,
- 15:59Speaker 1: like a surreal thing for me was I mean the
- 16:01Speaker 1: first movies I can remember seeing multiple times in the
- 16:04Speaker 1: theater where like Billy Madison and Have to gil More
- 16:07Speaker 1: like I was, I was thirteen or four teen when
- 16:10Speaker 1: they came out, those that that run began for him,
- 16:13Speaker 1: so as it as real and cool as it was
- 16:15Speaker 1: when the Stars born to you know, Sea Lady Gaga,
- 16:18Speaker 1: you know, stopping the movie with their voice and and
- 16:21Speaker 1: working with Bradley and then watching that translate onto the screen.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Like I didn't grow up watching Bradley Cooper, like I
- 16:26Speaker 1: grew up lessons of humor. Everything's influenced by him. So
- 16:29Speaker 1: writing dial of him was very natural and it was
- 16:32Speaker 1: one of those things where they also the more times
- 16:34Speaker 1: you refine the script, you know, there's like you just
- 16:37Speaker 1: find stuff and so you know, you add the lines
- 16:39Speaker 1: get added in as you go. There's always the point
- 16:42Speaker 1: where you gotta you gotta shrink the production down. And
- 16:44Speaker 1: so yeah, there was stuff that I think that they
- 16:48Speaker 1: definitely improved. I think there's a couple of lines, like
- 16:50Speaker 1: I think one one they definitely was improv like uh
- 16:53Speaker 1: Adam did the uh like the whole the whole Porner
- 16:57Speaker 1: thing that the porn addition they was scripted, but both
- 17:01Speaker 1: improvised to like want him improvised the it wasn't me
- 17:05Speaker 1: and then Adam responded, so like, there are a couple
- 17:07Speaker 1: of spots like that, but it'd be surprised more than that,
- 17:09Speaker 1: and I would tell you if it wasn't. There's a
- 17:10Speaker 1: lot that is scripted, and there's definitely you know, they're
- 17:12Speaker 1: just they're both tremendous actors, and that's everybody in the
- 17:15Speaker 1: movie is great. Ben Foster is fantastic and just such
- 17:18Speaker 1: a good actor to take everything and turn it into
- 17:21Speaker 1: just it's supposed to sound like it's not scripted. You know. Yeah,
- 17:25Speaker 1: I'm so glad you mentioned Ben Foster because again I'm
- 17:28Speaker 1: I'm one of the few people that I actually really
- 17:30Speaker 1: really like Ben Foster, even though most movie he plays,
- 17:33Speaker 1: he plays this kind of character, the kind of person
- 17:36Speaker 1: you don't really like. And it would have been Pandoram
- 17:39Speaker 1: that was like one of the movies I can think
- 17:40Speaker 1: of with him. He was the lead star. Not maybe
- 17:41Speaker 1: people have seen it, but it's a good, good sci
- 17:43Speaker 1: fi movie. But Anthony Edwards man, to me that really
- 17:47Speaker 1: jumped off in this movie where ship talking was really
- 17:50Speaker 1: amazing because it's just not that I'm saying you guys
- 17:53Speaker 1: went to and said, hey, do what you do on
- 17:55Speaker 1: the court. You can tell that was not natural to him.
- 17:58Speaker 1: But he's that cocky, really good athlete. You can tell
- 18:01Speaker 1: he came from not the streets, but he grew up
- 18:03Speaker 1: playing street basketball. Like that's that's how they work yet, right,
- 18:07Speaker 1: these guys that they try to break you down mentally
- 18:09Speaker 1: take you off your game. I love that the first
- 18:11Speaker 1: time they played against each other. I love that whole
- 18:13Speaker 1: thing where you know, Cruiz comes down, he hits a
- 18:16Speaker 1: three and he's feeling like he's in a rhythm, and
- 18:18Speaker 1: right there, Anthony Edwards keeps going, he keeps getting his
- 18:20Speaker 1: head and it was just kind of cool that whole
- 18:22Speaker 1: evolution of that part. Because we talked all the time.
- 18:24Speaker 1: He Chad, people don't get how much of sports is mental.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Like all these guys just have the talent, they have
- 18:30Speaker 1: the skills, it's the mental stuff that's what makes Michael
- 18:33Speaker 1: Jordan Michael Jordan, Lebron Lebron, So I would love to
- 18:36Speaker 1: hear how you guys worked with Edwards, because to me,
- 18:39Speaker 1: I thought he was the best actor of all the athletes.
- 18:41Speaker 1: He was incredible, credible, he really he really uh well,
- 18:45Speaker 1: he didn't watch him new each other. So he ended
- 18:47Speaker 1: up in the movie because they played on the symbolves together.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Want to recommended him and then I love him as
- 18:53Speaker 1: a player. I love everything about it any which he's
- 18:56Speaker 1: just everything. He's a he's a great basketbplayer, great personality.
- 19:00Speaker 1: It seems like a guy that you just can't help
- 19:01Speaker 1: but root for um. So then when he came on
- 19:04Speaker 1: and this is a testament, like and again, I would
- 19:06Speaker 1: tell you if it wasn't scripted. All that stuff was scripted,
- 19:09Speaker 1: except for when he says that ship's whack. That's the
- 19:11Speaker 1: only thing I had n't write. Everything else was him
- 19:14Speaker 1: just taking what was on the page and then making
- 19:16Speaker 1: it his own. And you're absolutely right, Simon, that was
- 19:19Speaker 1: I say. There's always there's always moments on every as
- 19:23Speaker 1: a screenwriter, especially where you're trying to figure out, like
- 19:25Speaker 1: what's gonna drive the second act, Like what what is
- 19:28Speaker 1: going to be the obstacle? So like in The Stars Burn,
- 19:30Speaker 1: it was like the pop music or getting stuff into
- 19:32Speaker 1: the system, and like that was gonna be the thing
- 19:34Speaker 1: that was going to kind of be the like so
- 19:36Speaker 1: Blone needed something to overcome, and like it couldn't just
- 19:39Speaker 1: be you know, uh, he just needs to train harder.
- 19:42Speaker 1: There had to be something he actually had to try
- 19:44Speaker 1: to get over. And and yeah, again being a huge
- 19:47Speaker 1: NBA fan, it is it's everything. I mean, honestly, if
- 19:50Speaker 1: I played, like if I'm playing horse in my backyard
- 19:54Speaker 1: with my like my wife will and I will will
- 19:56Speaker 1: play if if she makes a shot from twelve feet,
- 19:59Speaker 1: the feel thing of trying to hit that shot knowing
- 20:01Speaker 1: I have to hit it, you know, it just it
- 20:04Speaker 1: changes the feeling. I could stand there and hit from
- 20:06Speaker 1: like a free throw for the most part without not
- 20:08Speaker 1: that I'm very good, I'm terrible, but like you know
- 20:10Speaker 1: what I mean, if there's nobody in front of me,
- 20:12Speaker 1: so it's like I can only imagine what that feels
- 20:14Speaker 1: like when you're moving at the speed these guys move
- 20:16Speaker 1: at and and it's it's all mental. I mean Steph Curry,
- 20:20Speaker 1: you know, watching him and when he was in his
- 20:21Speaker 1: a stone in his prime, but that those those I
- 20:24Speaker 1: always remember the Oklahoma City game where he he wanted
- 20:26Speaker 1: from half court, so he's the twelve threes in that game.
- 20:29Speaker 1: That that's not just skill, that's like he's in the
- 20:32Speaker 1: last Dance. They described Michael Jordan the last episode, they
- 20:34Speaker 1: say that that's the key with secret. With Michaels, he
- 20:37Speaker 1: was a mystic. He was always in the moment. He
- 20:39Speaker 1: never expected to miss, he never expected to do anything
- 20:41Speaker 1: but make it. And and he's the greatest player of
- 20:43Speaker 1: all time. And I think that that's everything. So yeah,
- 20:46Speaker 1: it was a natural fit for his for Bose kind
- 20:49Speaker 1: of character art. And I got to do that fun
- 20:51Speaker 1: bit with Adam making fun of him, which I really enjoyed.
- 20:54Speaker 1: It was that I thought the athletes overall in the
- 20:57Speaker 1: movie every fantastic. Kenny Smith who was in the movie
- 21:02Speaker 1: not even playing Kenny Smith, it was ridiculously good. How
- 21:06Speaker 1: much how much in this is coaching? How many times
- 21:11Speaker 1: did you have to say to them, Okay, the director
- 21:13Speaker 1: is seeing him do it differently, Like were they comfortable immediately?
- 21:16Speaker 1: How do you even know? I'm asking me eight questions
- 21:19Speaker 1: here that do that? Well? Two things? So h A
- 21:23Speaker 1: lot of a ton of credit for that goes to Jeremiah,
- 21:25Speaker 1: director director, all the credit for that that, But I
- 21:28Speaker 1: also have to compredit to Adam as a producer because
- 21:31Speaker 1: when after when we first were trying to find director
- 21:33Speaker 1: because remember first we're trying to get it for summer.
- 21:35Speaker 1: So they went out really quickly. And Jeremiah's first movie
- 21:39Speaker 1: called We the Animals, and he what two things you'll
- 21:42Speaker 1: notice about it if you're watch it. It's like, it's
- 21:44Speaker 1: visually very interesting. It's a low budget movie. He did
- 21:46Speaker 1: a ton with the camera that really it's visceral and
- 21:49Speaker 1: you just continue. You knew he had a great eye.
- 21:51Speaker 1: The other thing that is he worked with non actors,
- 21:53Speaker 1: so Adam knew as a producer and he doesn't get
- 21:55Speaker 1: nearly enough credit like he he is. He was the
- 21:59Speaker 1: key producer of the movie beyond being the star in
- 22:01Speaker 1: the Driving Force like that decision was huge and so
- 22:04Speaker 1: every every NBA player we had a director who knew
- 22:07Speaker 1: how to get those natural moments. But I'll tell you
- 22:09Speaker 1: specifically about Kenny because I beating. I met Kenny at
- 22:12Speaker 1: the premiere. I saw him in Philly, and I mean,
- 22:14Speaker 1: I'll probably acide the last time, so I'll probably see
- 22:16Speaker 1: you again in my life. This is really cool for
- 22:17Speaker 1: makes I watch you like every night for all of
- 22:19Speaker 1: the spring. Um. He he said this. The other thing
- 22:23Speaker 1: I think is the way these guys are wired. So
- 22:25Speaker 1: this is just what Kenny told me when he he
- 22:27Speaker 1: read the script and Adam had called him to to
- 22:29Speaker 1: just say want him to do it. And Kenny had
- 22:32Speaker 1: played like himself and cameos, but he's never done like
- 22:34Speaker 1: a real acting thing, so he knew. He said, I
- 22:36Speaker 1: need twenty four hours he and he just like thought
- 22:40Speaker 1: about it because once he decided to do it, he
- 22:42Speaker 1: was going to he did. He did he acting coach
- 22:45Speaker 1: every day for a month. He just worked like two
- 22:47Speaker 1: or three hours a day to to be to becolm
- 22:50Speaker 1: the actors. So his like his pro athlete work ethic
- 22:52Speaker 1: kicked in and once he decided to do it, he's
- 22:55Speaker 1: gonna do it great. So I think a lot of
- 22:56Speaker 1: these guys, you know, some of that is just like
- 22:59Speaker 1: you know you're gonna do something. You're not going to
- 23:01Speaker 1: just mail it in. You're gonna do it. You're gonna
- 23:02Speaker 1: do it really well. So in that combination of that
- 23:04Speaker 1: with the director who really knows how to get those
- 23:06Speaker 1: natural moments, um, yeah, it really worked out. And that's
- 23:09Speaker 1: the coolest feeling. Man, Like you can't being a writer.
- 23:12Speaker 1: You just you control so little, you know. Again, it's
- 23:14Speaker 1: like being a role player. If you you can be
- 23:16Speaker 1: an amazing role player if you're not on a team
- 23:18Speaker 1: with you, honest, if you're not on a team with
- 23:20Speaker 1: steph and and Draymond or Tatum, Like there's you need
- 23:25Speaker 1: the the the guy to get you there, but there's
- 23:28Speaker 1: a it's an amazing feeling when it does. And also,
- 23:31Speaker 1: you know, we play an important role, but it's just
- 23:34Speaker 1: the movie is so much out of our hands. Well,
- 23:37Speaker 1: you mentioned the most important word to me, which was
- 23:42Speaker 1: this movie was really natural and seamless. It didn't go
- 23:48Speaker 1: for anything cheap, like. Adam Sandler's lines felt completely reactive.
- 23:55Speaker 1: And in the moment um, you know, he and Kenny
- 23:58Speaker 1: Smith are sitting around a pool in Spain and there's
- 24:02Speaker 1: beautiful women all over and they're all topless, and uh,
- 24:06Speaker 1: Kenny Smith is trying to get Adam Sandler to turn around,
- 24:09Speaker 1: and Adam Sandler was like, if I turned around, my
- 24:11Speaker 1: wife is gonna kill me. And finally he gets him
- 24:13Speaker 1: to do it and they're staring at right like or
- 24:18Speaker 1: there was even a moment where Adam Sandler is sitting
- 24:21Speaker 1: at his kitchen table in a really powerful, stressful moment
- 24:24Speaker 1: towards the end of the movie, and he's texting something
- 24:27Speaker 1: in his daughter is trying to say something to him,
- 24:30Speaker 1: which ultimately turns out to be something incredibly important, but
- 24:33Speaker 1: he's just sort of shushing her the whole time. And
- 24:36Speaker 1: anyone who has kids who was trying to sort of
- 24:39Speaker 1: manage something stressful while the kids are talking to them
- 24:43Speaker 1: has said that line a thousand times. But the way
- 24:46Speaker 1: he said and the way it was delivered just felt
- 24:49Speaker 1: like he was a dude who was a dad talking
- 24:52Speaker 1: to his daughter. It's just like everything about the movie
- 24:55Speaker 1: actually felt really sort of totally perfect, and Jabal fetters.
- 25:00Speaker 1: That's a tough thing to do. I'll say one last
- 25:02Speaker 1: thing about that, because that again goes to the you
- 25:04Speaker 1: know that there's a script element to it, but that
- 25:06Speaker 1: that was something to be able to walk the line
- 25:09Speaker 1: and tone between like you know, a drama that that's
- 25:13Speaker 1: gonna try to get you to cry in certain spots,
- 25:15Speaker 1: but then also to be able to have a scene
- 25:17Speaker 1: like the one you just to Kenny Smith and and
- 25:19Speaker 1: Adams seen at the pool. Like Adam's superpower is that
- 25:24Speaker 1: he is kind of like a regular guy. He's very smart,
- 25:28Speaker 1: and he's incredibly talented, but he really is like one
- 25:30Speaker 1: of the most regular guys that everybody says this about it,
- 25:35Speaker 1: so I know him enough to say that from personal experience.
- 25:38Speaker 1: But there that the line between the movie being funny
- 25:41Speaker 1: and having like actual like the opening scene with Boumont,
- 25:44Speaker 1: like that's a scripted scene that's like, it's funny, it's
- 25:47Speaker 1: meant to kind of it's it's got a silliness. And
- 25:49Speaker 1: I we've been compared favorably by a few people to
- 25:52Speaker 1: Jerry McGuire and rewatching Jerry McGuire that that is that
- 25:55Speaker 1: movie has that too, where it's like it could have
- 25:57Speaker 1: been cheesy, it could have been corny. The kid could
- 25:59Speaker 1: have really made it seem weird. But those scenes because
- 26:02Speaker 1: Tom so good in the movie just kind of work,
- 26:04Speaker 1: like you know, it's a you feel like it's a movie.
- 26:07Speaker 1: And then but at the same time, it doesn't lose
- 26:10Speaker 1: the audience to where you just you still say suffd
- 26:12Speaker 1: And so, yeah, the NBA Finals are here, and so
- 26:17Speaker 1: is your chance to score big on Fan Duel Sports book.

- 27:54Speaker 1: I was gonna say not that I'm pitching an Center's
- 27:56Speaker 1: next movie, but by all means you've done football. He's
- 28:00Speaker 1: on basketball. I mean, he's done these movies. People forget.
- 28:02Speaker 1: I will never forget Big Daddy. He had a scene
- 28:05Speaker 1: where he's hitting baseballs. That is not a kid that
- 28:08Speaker 1: has a naturally good baseball swing. I don't know if
- 28:11Speaker 1: you played it growing up, but to me, that's the
- 28:14Speaker 1: next thing I don't need needs to do a baseball movie.
- 28:16Speaker 1: It's like, you can tell again he's a hooper. I've
- 28:18Speaker 1: seen these photos of always going around shooting hoops. I
- 28:21Speaker 1: bet you Adams a baseball player. Like again, his stance,
- 28:24Speaker 1: the way he swung the bat. I have no doubt
- 28:26Speaker 1: Adam wants to do a baseball movie. You can just
- 28:28Speaker 1: tell he's naturally a baseball player. So I would love
- 28:30Speaker 1: to hear. If this is what makes you, this is
- 28:32Speaker 1: what makes you a shark, this makes you a pro pro,
- 28:35Speaker 1: You'll notice those little details. You pick it up from
- 28:37Speaker 1: the swing and Big Daddy that you're right. That is
- 28:40Speaker 1: his best sport is the sport that he And when
- 28:42Speaker 1: you talked about this at dinner, Unzo, and it was
- 28:45Speaker 1: like that, yeah, because one of my favorite movies Bull
- 28:48Speaker 1: Dohm and Uh and I and it just like Adam
- 28:51Speaker 1: in a role like crash, like he would just crush
- 28:53Speaker 1: and and so it's definitely something that I don't ask yet,
- 28:56Speaker 1: but it's it's something that I think if I could
- 28:58Speaker 1: find the right way, and um, I think I'd love
- 29:01Speaker 1: to find him like or a league of their own,
- 29:03Speaker 1: like a movie that just he gets to play like
- 29:05Speaker 1: he could he could play the manager. I think at
- 29:07Speaker 1: this point you know he was talking about that too.
- 29:09Speaker 1: How it's like, you know, it's everybody, we all get
- 29:12Speaker 1: an except chat. That was very good for I imagine
- 29:15Speaker 1: you're older than thirty five. But I feel like once
- 29:17Speaker 1: I hit forty. I just turned forty last year, and
- 29:20Speaker 1: it's like the bags under my eyes get get heavier,
- 29:23Speaker 1: and you know, just trying to hold onto the hair
- 29:24Speaker 1: on my head and Adam, you're the joints start to
- 29:27Speaker 1: hurt and it's like, oh man, this is crazy. And Adam,
- 29:30Speaker 1: he's in his fifties so he held on a little longer.
- 29:32Speaker 1: But yeah, it's it's I think he is actually being
- 29:35Speaker 1: a player. Maybe we're past that, but he could be
- 29:38Speaker 1: a great manager. Um number one, everyone knows that Jews
- 29:43Speaker 1: from New Hampshire great as It's like undiscovered athletics to
- 29:52Speaker 1: everyone knows. Uh. Yeah, I am older than both of you.
- 29:56Speaker 1: Fucker's Uh. I stopped playing basketball at forty when I
- 30:00Speaker 1: in the span of six months, tore my labor, broke
- 30:04Speaker 1: a rib and shredded a finger and decided that's it.
- 30:08Speaker 1: I'm done. Um, I feel like I would want to
- 30:12Speaker 1: have a all day movie fest with Will Simon because
- 30:19Speaker 1: Bull Durham is one of my favorite movies. I felt
- 30:21Speaker 1: like and and and it's hard to thread the needle
- 30:24Speaker 1: on sports movies. And now there's two great Philadelphia sports movies. Invincible, uh,
- 30:34Speaker 1: the Vince Papali Story, which, uh, let's let you're really
- 30:38Speaker 1: gonna about Rocky. I wasn't gonna forget Rocky, so we're
- 30:45Speaker 1: not in it. So it's Invincible and Invincible. I said,
- 30:49Speaker 1: three Invincible, Rocky and now Hustle three Great Philadelphia. I
- 30:56Speaker 1: love Invincible to chat. We should do a movie thing sometimes,
- 30:59Speaker 1: I I really do. Uh. It was a movie I
- 31:03Speaker 1: remember seen in the theater and being like, damn, I
- 31:05Speaker 1: really actually I'm enjoying this and I knew part of
- 31:07Speaker 1: his probably because like I'm from Philly. It grew up
- 31:10Speaker 1: going to that stadium. Well, I Philly area and not
- 31:12Speaker 1: from Philly. Gaff forbid. I don't want to Donna claim,
- 31:15Speaker 1: you know, heritage I don't have. But that's a weird
- 31:17Speaker 1: thing being from women in Delaware. It's like Jeremiah was
- 31:20Speaker 1: born in South Philly, and Jeremiah like authentic. His dad
- 31:23Speaker 1: uh an artist designed to the gardens. There's some art
- 31:27Speaker 1: in there that his dad is. He's like super authentic,
- 31:30Speaker 1: Like he did grow up in the city. When you're
- 31:32Speaker 1: outside the city, it's like it's like it's your city.
- 31:34Speaker 1: But I'm not from the city, you know what I mean?
- 31:36Speaker 1: So I don't. I didn't get to like the favorite
- 31:39Speaker 1: son treatment, but I did get to like, well, he's
- 31:41Speaker 1: the reason the movies here, so um well as the
- 31:44Speaker 1: person who wrote the book Invincible, Uh, well, really That's
- 31:48Speaker 1: all I wanted to say is that I wrote the
- 31:50Speaker 1: book invincible, But really, how do I know that? Yeah, yeah,
- 31:54Speaker 1: it's one of my seven one of my seven books. Uh,
- 31:57Speaker 1: it was I didn't with Vince Papali, who's one of
- 32:03Speaker 1: the classiest guys in the world. Love the guy to death. Uh,
- 32:07Speaker 1: pure joy, pure optimism, pure happiness. I would drive at
- 32:10Speaker 1: the time, I was living in Montclair, New Jersey. He
- 32:13Speaker 1: was in Cherry Hill. I would drive down from Montclair
- 32:16Speaker 1: ninety minutes down uh the turnpike to Cherry Hill, and
- 32:23Speaker 1: I'd sit in his basement and I turned on my
- 32:26Speaker 1: recorder and he would just start talking. He would tell
- 32:28Speaker 1: the greatest stories in the world, so many stories that
- 32:31Speaker 1: couldn't even end up in the book. And um and
- 32:35Speaker 1: at one point, it was right when my second kid
- 32:37Speaker 1: was born, so I was exhausted. And there was one
- 32:40Speaker 1: day where I started to fall asleep while I was
- 32:44Speaker 1: recording him in his basement, and I sort of knighted off,
- 32:47Speaker 1: Like you know how when you're in class sometimes you'll
- 32:49Speaker 1: not often drink your head up. So I did that
- 32:52Speaker 1: and he looks and he goes, you don't worry about
- 32:54Speaker 1: a brother. I can just keep talking and it was
- 32:57Speaker 1: just like it was the best. It was the total best.
- 33:01Speaker 1: He was the best. If we were to have a
- 33:03Speaker 1: movie fest day, I would do Invincible, I would do Builderham,
- 33:09Speaker 1: I would do Cusier's Um, I would do Moneyball, which
- 33:14Speaker 1: I feel like. You had a scene in Hustle that
- 33:17Speaker 1: was a little bit of a of an homage to
- 33:20Speaker 1: Moneyball when everyone's sitting around the table in the beginning
- 33:24Speaker 1: talking about players and stuff. And my my kid actually
- 33:27Speaker 1: asked me he wanted to know from you, was that
- 33:30Speaker 1: sort of a was that inspired by the scene in Moneyball? Uh?
- 33:36Speaker 1: It wasn't the sense that that's how teams really work.
- 33:39Speaker 1: So I mean, obviously I thought about it, but what
- 33:41Speaker 1: wasn't specifically like that. Honestly, the scene of money Ball
- 33:44Speaker 1: I feel like plays a little more even like like
- 33:46Speaker 1: the thing I was talking about, the line you walk
- 33:48Speaker 1: between like movie scene and and just being like delivering
- 33:52Speaker 1: the information. I love that scene because Brad keeps pointing
- 33:55Speaker 1: to Jonah like, uh, you know, he gets on base.
- 33:59Speaker 1: That's what I mean by it's it's got a rhythm
- 34:00Speaker 1: and there's like there's a there's kind of a running joke.
- 34:02Speaker 1: But Aaron Starking great right. I think Steve's Allien wrote
- 34:05Speaker 1: that with him too. Um, But anyway, this one was
- 34:08Speaker 1: more it was. It was definitely that's un conscious of that.
- 34:11Speaker 1: But when I so my first past, I knew, I
- 34:13Speaker 1: knew that we had this whole uh construct within the team.
- 34:16Speaker 1: The seventies sixes were super cool and once they kind
- 34:19Speaker 1: of gave us permission to use um, you know, they
- 34:22Speaker 1: just got involved. They jumped in with both feet. And
- 34:24Speaker 1: Dell Demps was our technical advisor, and I spoke to
- 34:27Speaker 1: Dell Demps like pretty much right away. So off my
- 34:30Speaker 1: first draft, he and I started talking about like what
- 34:33Speaker 1: that scene would really sound like. And then the deeper
- 34:35Speaker 1: we got into the movie, you know, like there's stuff
- 34:37Speaker 1: during even during production. You know, they made little changes
- 34:40Speaker 1: during the productions there even the any line of that
- 34:43Speaker 1: was on there that wasn't like exactly what somebody would say,
- 34:46Speaker 1: you know, kept was was was changing what somebody would say.
- 34:48Speaker 1: So that that is very much. Um, it's meant to
- 34:51Speaker 1: be authentic, and that's how they really do it, man
- 34:53Speaker 1: and sit around and they argue about it. So I
- 34:56Speaker 1: found something to like Sacramento Kings drafting room, which not
- 34:59Speaker 1: the one you necessarily want to model. But that's what
- 35:01Speaker 1: they don't sit around you argue about who who to
- 35:03Speaker 1: take and why. Del Dens by the way, former player,
- 35:06Speaker 1: current coach. So yeah, here's my question for you. Will
- 35:09Speaker 1: first then signing if we're having a movie day, I've
- 35:14Speaker 1: given some movies, but there's one I'm holding out on.
- 35:17Speaker 1: I want to know what is the betting movie that
- 35:20Speaker 1: you would add to our movie day festival lineup. The
- 35:28Speaker 1: tough thing here is that I feel like both of
- 35:30Speaker 1: the two that came to my mind are like kind
- 35:33Speaker 1: of Homer picks, but like so Uncut Gems is such
- 35:38Speaker 1: a fantastic gambling movie as far as just like the
- 35:41Speaker 1: energy how it typically ends for most gambler's metaphorically um.
- 35:47Speaker 1: And then Silver Linings Playbook, which is another one which
- 35:50Speaker 1: I thought they just did such a good job of
- 35:51Speaker 1: weaving the gambling part of the story that was really
- 35:56Speaker 1: a hard line to walk, and I mean David Russell's
- 35:59Speaker 1: and incredible at that, but like to make kind of
- 36:01Speaker 1: like an ending that's it could have been really cheesy
- 36:04Speaker 1: to have like the dance in the parlay, but like
- 36:06Speaker 1: it just plays. Um, those two would be on. And
- 36:09Speaker 1: then I'm gonna give you three and I also I
- 36:13Speaker 1: love UM trying to think of one outside the Box
- 36:16Speaker 1: and Michael Clayton where he he is a he is
- 36:20Speaker 1: a gambling problem and it's kind of the backstory and
- 36:23Speaker 1: he plays cards in the movies technically counts and I
- 36:26Speaker 1: just absolutely love that movie. It kind of got It
- 36:28Speaker 1: came out the year of UM. It's like when you know,
- 36:32Speaker 1: any team that ran into Michael Jordan's Bulls, like you
- 36:34Speaker 1: weren't gonna win the finals. Like so Michael Clayton came
- 36:37Speaker 1: out and was the Oscars the same year as No
- 36:39Speaker 1: Country for Old Men and There Will be Blood, And
- 36:41Speaker 1: I just love that movie. And it just kind of
- 36:43Speaker 1: got so that that would be on my list. Probably
- 36:44Speaker 1: there's a couple other obvious ones. I'll give Simon, what
- 36:47Speaker 1: would you say? My number one is easy. It's Rounders.
- 36:50Speaker 1: I watched Rounders so many times. I burned the VHS
- 36:53Speaker 1: tape with Rounders. Um, three stacks of high society, don't
- 36:58Speaker 1: splash the pot, I mean all all of it. I again,
- 37:02Speaker 1: this is when I was young, and Worlds as a
- 37:03Speaker 1: Poker was really big in the early two thousand, two
- 37:05Speaker 1: thousand one, like Chris Moneymaker was just a big deal
- 37:08Speaker 1: and I'll just never forget where it was like, this
- 37:10Speaker 1: is why I want to do for the rest of
- 37:11Speaker 1: my life. I just want to play poker and kind
- 37:13Speaker 1: of be a card counter like these guys. And as
- 37:15Speaker 1: I got older, I was like, Okay, now I really
- 37:17Speaker 1: understand the movie. These guys are miserable as hell, kind
- 37:21Speaker 1: and trying to get to this lifestyle. So for for me, gambler,
- 37:24Speaker 1: I I can't get around big of a part of
- 37:27Speaker 1: my life. Rounders was because it was just not that
- 37:30Speaker 1: it's authentic, but it really shows you what it's like,
- 37:33Speaker 1: like you're gonna have these huge risk you need to
- 37:35Speaker 1: go for it, and you might end up being a
- 37:38Speaker 1: ups man the rest of your life. Like there's just
- 37:40Speaker 1: really a lot of risk in this gambling world. I
- 37:42Speaker 1: felt Rounders, you know, it really broke that down in
- 37:45Speaker 1: a in a sense that, um, you know, I love
- 37:48Speaker 1: Adam Sandler, but most most professional betters aren't doing a
- 37:51Speaker 1: thirteen team parlay to get their money back at the
- 37:54Speaker 1: end of the thing. It's like it's more like Rounders,
- 37:56Speaker 1: where it's like, Okay, I'm going for I gotta beat
- 37:59Speaker 1: this one guy get the money to go do this
- 38:01Speaker 1: next step in my life. So you know, it's always
- 38:04Speaker 1: it's always interesting that we've seen movies progress now with gambling,
- 38:07Speaker 1: because what's the number one thing at the end of
- 38:09Speaker 1: a gaming movie. They wanted to remind you gambling is bad.
- 38:12Speaker 1: You don't want to be doing this. So I thought
- 38:14Speaker 1: that was kind of cool Rounders where they didn't really
- 38:16Speaker 1: have to do that. They showed kind of the other
- 38:18Speaker 1: side of it, where it's like you can swim through
- 38:20Speaker 1: all the slush, all the ship, all the mud, and
- 38:22Speaker 1: you can make out the other side. So yeah, for me,
- 38:25Speaker 1: from my favorite gambling movie was definitely always gonna be Rounders.
- 38:28Speaker 1: So that's a good man, That's what I mean. That
- 38:31Speaker 1: is really even that insight on it. It is a
- 38:33Speaker 1: really good one. Rounders is great. It's funny, will no joke.
- 38:38Speaker 1: In the past two weeks, I've watched Michael Clayton and
- 38:42Speaker 1: Silver Linings Playbook. Um over Lining Playbook. I had forgotten
- 38:46Speaker 1: how good it was. So Jennifer Lawrence, she won an
- 38:49Speaker 1: Academy Award for that. Bradley Cooper was in that. They
- 38:52Speaker 1: were amazing together. Uh, the way they kept saying a
- 38:57Speaker 1: parlay was really funny and like the put the where
- 39:01Speaker 1: they put the accent on it and how they talked
- 39:03Speaker 1: about it. But the sweatshirt, people can't see it necessarily,
- 39:06Speaker 1: but Simon is wearing an old school Eagles. Yeah, and
- 39:09Speaker 1: that is like so Silver Linings Playbook. Um, I love
- 39:13Speaker 1: both of those movies. Uncut Gems. That was gonna be
- 39:15Speaker 1: my first choice. And uh, it's such a controversial gambling movie.
- 39:22Speaker 1: Some people just absolutely hate it. I loved it and
- 39:26Speaker 1: I thought it was amazing, loved everything about it, and um,
- 39:30Speaker 1: but we've had people on the podcast you just cannot
- 39:33Speaker 1: stand that movie. And I don't know why. I thought
- 39:35Speaker 1: it was I thought it was me. I thought Salmon
- 39:37Speaker 1: it was great in it. Yeah, I think maybe it's
- 39:40Speaker 1: they genuinely don't like the way it made them feel.
- 39:42Speaker 1: Like you people, it's not necessarily enjoyable experience, but the
- 39:46Speaker 1: movie is incredible to make you feel that way. Yeah,
- 39:48Speaker 1: it's the anxiety you feel that that whole movie, with
- 39:51Speaker 1: his characters. That's an all time robbery. I'm not getting
- 39:54Speaker 1: nominated for that. That was I mean, honestly, you should
- 39:57Speaker 1: have one. But that was so far in away one
- 39:59Speaker 1: of the US performances of the year, and given everything
- 40:02Speaker 1: else he's done, I would have expected it. But yeah,
- 40:04Speaker 1: Uncle James is up there. The Gambler, I think also
- 40:07Speaker 1: has to be right. Yeah, I mean the Gambler, but
- 40:09Speaker 1: it almost feels cliche. And also it's so fucking old now,
- 40:13Speaker 1: like it's as old as I am, right and so
- 40:17Speaker 1: um and that is a dark early seventies like almost
- 40:22Speaker 1: new Irish, almost too realistic look at the life of
- 40:26Speaker 1: a sports better in the life of the Gambler, I
- 40:28Speaker 1: think we got our line upset, we got a rounders,
- 40:30Speaker 1: we got uncut gems, we got silver linings, we got
- 40:32Speaker 1: Michael Clayton. The only one I would add, uh is
- 40:36Speaker 1: twenty one, which was based on the book Bringing Down
- 40:39Speaker 1: the House, written by Alan Lobe, who is another screenwriter
- 40:43Speaker 1: who's been in the podcast a lot amazing translation to
- 40:47Speaker 1: the book. Uh, and I just really liked the movie.
- 40:49Speaker 1: It was fine. It was candy, it was popcorny like
- 40:52Speaker 1: it just sort of it was sexy. I think it's
- 40:54Speaker 1: a good one. I'll add to just because yeah, I
- 40:57Speaker 1: think you gotta put rain Man. Um, we can just
- 41:00Speaker 1: extend the day, We'll go into the night. Yea, I
- 41:02Speaker 1: will put rain Man. And then the only other one
- 41:04Speaker 1: I thought about this and I think it's also it's
- 41:06Speaker 1: a sports movie, and I think it absolutely is a
- 41:08Speaker 1: gambling movie because of the eight Men. Of the Eight
- 41:11Speaker 1: Men out Field of Dreams, Field Up Dreams, he what
- 41:15Speaker 1: he's effectively doing is gambling, and it's like you can
- 41:18Speaker 1: make that parallel for it. It's it is a reach
- 41:20Speaker 1: in some sense, but he very much financially bets everything
- 41:24Speaker 1: on something that that he feels is going to pay
- 41:26Speaker 1: off without with no rational reason. Um. And I think
- 41:30Speaker 1: that I actually really thought it was interesting with said
- 41:32Speaker 1: about watching Rounders meant to Become because I think about
- 41:36Speaker 1: the scene in which You'll Know and when he's with
- 41:38Speaker 1: Martin Landau and he talks about how he they wanted
- 41:41Speaker 1: him to become a rabbi, his parents, and he went
- 41:44Speaker 1: into two law and he was just that's what he
- 41:47Speaker 1: was called to do that. And I think that I
- 41:48Speaker 1: never really thought about it from that perspective because obviously
- 41:51Speaker 1: not a professional gambler, uh that that that does show
- 41:55Speaker 1: you that this is like it's okay to want to
- 41:58Speaker 1: do this, like it's not, it doesn't it's not for
- 42:01Speaker 1: all for degenerates. It's like it can be a living
- 42:03Speaker 1: and it's and it's like it's math, you know. So
- 42:06Speaker 1: I think it's cool that that that played a role
- 42:08Speaker 1: in your origin story. Let's not compliment Simon, all right,
- 42:13Speaker 1: I won't. We don't. We don't compliment Sigmon either. We don't.
- 42:17Speaker 1: So much love as it is, that's all. Really, it's
- 42:21Speaker 1: all really funny video on Twitter. I barely am on Twitter,
- 42:24Speaker 1: but somehow I saw one of you somebody cut together
- 42:28Speaker 1: you like turning changing your pick because this was so funny.
- 42:34Speaker 1: That's great. Just like the different like you couldn't have
- 42:37Speaker 1: scripted it betterally, the different your tone of voice, and
- 42:40Speaker 1: it's like you're saying the same thing just in different ways.
- 42:43Speaker 1: Like all right, well maybe it's so good. It was
- 42:44Speaker 1: like Tommy Boy when he's like blowing the sales. Gotcha, thanks, listen.
- 42:52Speaker 1: I can go any direction. I go with the wind.
- 42:54Speaker 1: That's how I've made it. That's what I've gotten by
- 42:56Speaker 1: in my career. But I do the exact same thing
- 42:58Speaker 1: about was in your chair Rustional wants go out? Yeah,
- 43:01Speaker 1: I can see that. I can totally see that. Uh.
- 43:04Speaker 1: Will Fetters, executive producer writer for Hustle. The movie is amazing.
- 43:09Speaker 1: Everyone go download or watch it on Netflix. Um Adam
- 43:13Speaker 1: Sandler stars in it. Love the Movie, Love the work
- 43:17Speaker 1: you're doing. Congrats on all the success. Thanks for coming
