A towering monument rises in Clondulane to honor Maurice ‘Moss’ Twomey, the longest-serving chief of staff of the Old IRA — a man whose daring exploits shook the world. From capturing British soldiers and weapons in 1919 to orchestrating a legendary escape from Spike Island in 1921, Twomey’s name was splashed across American newspapers. Even while on the run, he delivered a powerful speech at a monument unveiling in 1935 before vanishing into the crowd.
