- 1:02Speaker 2: Appreciate you checking out NHL and Scripted.
- 1:04Speaker 1: We began with an epic knight in Philadelphia, and former
- 1:07Speaker 1: Flyer Nate Thompson was in the building. Nate, Flyers had
- 1:10Speaker 1: not won a playoff serious since twenty twenty. You were
- 1:12Speaker 1: there in the bubble sixteen games, you and Lavigno from
- 1:15Speaker 1: one av to another. I can imagine it was an
- 1:18Speaker 1: electric atmosphere. I took my son to Game three. We
- 1:20Speaker 1: had a blast. There was a great, great win at
- 1:22Speaker 1: that point, Flyers a three nothing. I'm sure it was
- 1:24Speaker 1: a different tenor last night, though again a feverish crowd.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Excited Crawd about the anxiety creeping in. You lose that
- 1:30Speaker 1: game and all of a sudden, now you're on a graphic.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Now it's like teams to come back from three to zero,
- 1:34Speaker 1: including famously the Flyers against the Bruins. Well, get into
- 1:37Speaker 1: the machinations of Cam York's winner. But tell me about
- 1:39Speaker 1: the night and the vibe of being there in Philadelphia.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Well, Philly was buzzing right away. As soon as I
- 1:45Speaker 3: got to Philly, you could just feel it. And then
- 1:48Speaker 3: being at the game, you said it right like people
- 1:51Speaker 3: knew the magnitude of what was going to happen if
- 1:54Speaker 3: they lost the game. You could feel it in the crowd.
- 1:55Speaker 3: It was tense. I mean, there was a kid next
- 1:58Speaker 3: to me that was just he kept losing it. This
- 2:00Speaker 3: is bad, this is bad, this is bad, this is bad.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Just kept saying that.
- 2:03Speaker 4: Over All.
- 2:04Speaker 3: I'm like, man, this is this is so good being
- 2:06Speaker 3: in Philly next to these fans. And I think the
- 2:09Speaker 3: story of the game was the goaltenders. Really, I mean,
- 2:12Speaker 3: to be honest, Philly had zero zero chance of winning
- 2:17Speaker 3: that game. Like there was they had zero business winning
- 2:19Speaker 3: that game. Like Pittsburgh out played him from start to finish,
- 2:22Speaker 3: I thought for the most part, and Philly had their
- 2:24Speaker 3: had their surges, but she lost was really good. And
- 2:28Speaker 3: then Dan Ladaar, I mean, he was the reason they
- 2:29Speaker 3: won that game last night. He was He was unbelievable.
- 2:32Speaker 3: But you could feel it the whole.
- 2:33Speaker 5: Game, just the tense anxiety everyone had throughout the whole game.
- 2:38Speaker 3: So it was it was an unbelievable atmosphere and a
- 2:42Speaker 3: lot of fun to uh to witness live, to see
- 2:45Speaker 3: the Flyers do it at home in six games, which
- 2:48Speaker 3: was huge.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Dan Vladar has been the team MVPJD all season long.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Want to pick up by Danny Brier. Of course, Ladar has.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Been a good goal in the past. You saw him
- 2:55Speaker 2: last with the Flames.
- 2:56Speaker 1: There's always a guy who was mixing in time with
- 2:58Speaker 1: whoever else was in the net.
- 2:59Speaker 2: But Brier saw.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Something to him that said, you know what, this guy
- 3:02Speaker 1: could be a number one for us. Played fifty one games,
- 3:04Speaker 1: ninth twenty one save percent you had in this series.
- 3:06Speaker 1: I remember asking Rick talking about Lador. He said, how
- 3:08Speaker 1: did he become a number one?
- 3:09Speaker 2: What change?
- 3:09Speaker 5: He goes?
- 3:10Speaker 1: Honestly, he worked in a skating I said, huh, that's
- 3:12Speaker 1: not the first thing I think of with a goalie.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I think it was glove and I think it was
- 3:14Speaker 2: trapper and his stick hunting. Yeah, he goes.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Dan Ladur worked on his skating this offseason, became a
- 3:19Speaker 1: much better goaltender because of it.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Forty two saves last night.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Again, the Flyers play a strong defensive game, but they're
- 3:24Speaker 1: not in this position without Flattie. It was the worst
- 3:27Speaker 1: series of It was not an exciting game, let's be clear,
- 3:31Speaker 1: a nil bill overtime.
- 3:33Speaker 4: It looked like two HL teams playing, let's be honest.
- 3:36Speaker 2: And no one willing to take any chance. There's no
- 3:37Speaker 2: offensive fire fighting.
- 3:39Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, Philly looked nervous. The whole time. Listen,
- 3:42Speaker 6: I've been there. I'm one of the four teams that
- 3:44Speaker 6: lost got reverse swept so with the La Kings in
- 3:48Speaker 6: twenty twelve, twenty fourteen, so you could see how nervous
- 3:52Speaker 6: they were. They didn't want to move the puck. They
- 3:54Speaker 6: were just kind of waiting. They had some opportunities. But
- 3:57Speaker 6: I mean, Archer she Loops was incredible as well. But yeah,
- 3:59Speaker 6: then are I mean nobody expected with all the trouble
- 4:03Speaker 6: that Philly's had over the years with goalies, I don't
- 4:06Speaker 6: think anybody expected him to come in and and really
- 4:10Speaker 6: just take over it. And I mean he had a
- 4:12Speaker 6: case for a vesdent of this season. He's kind of
- 4:15Speaker 6: translated it into the playoffs, and good for him.
- 4:17Speaker 4: You know.
- 4:18Speaker 6: The one thing I'll say on this awful series he had,
- 4:22Speaker 6: he had those two games where he kind of fucked
- 4:24Speaker 6: up each game, you know, misplaying the puck and then
- 4:27Speaker 6: a couple of mishandles. But to be able to bounce
- 4:30Speaker 6: back like that and put a really solid game forth.
- 4:32Speaker 4: Like that was a good, good game.
- 4:34Speaker 6: I thought pitching a ran away with it, and I
- 4:36Speaker 6: was like, they're going to actually do it, because if
- 4:38Speaker 6: Pit won that game, it was over, Like, I don't
- 4:40Speaker 6: think Philly was going to recover. They look nervous at
- 4:43Speaker 6: the end of the day though they just extended their
- 4:45Speaker 6: you know, playoffs for another eight nine days because they
- 4:48Speaker 6: go and play Carolina. And unless I'm completely fucking off
- 4:51Speaker 6: and I don't know what I'm watching, like Carolina is
- 4:54Speaker 6: gonna dog walk either one of these teams. So I
- 4:58Speaker 6: don't know, Like I just can't see a world in
- 5:01Speaker 6: which Philly even gets close to Caroline. But it could
- 5:04Speaker 6: be wrong. It just when you look at the Carolina
- 5:07Speaker 6: Ottawa series in this series, it's like it's two different
- 5:12Speaker 6: leagues to me. But I mean, it could be wrong
- 5:14Speaker 6: because it could just be the way they're filming the game,
- 5:16Speaker 6: or you know, maybe the broadcast sucks or I don't know,
- 5:20Speaker 6: it's just it. The vibe is just way way better
- 5:24Speaker 6: and that even though that Carolina series was four games.
- 5:26Speaker 6: But to your point, Dan Vodar's is credible.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Yeah, it's certainly been an amazing story, just so he's
- 5:34Speaker 1: become that guy for Philly. The Flyers and Hurricanes a game.
- 5:36Speaker 1: We'll talk with that previoy little bit later on. But
- 5:38Speaker 1: they went one to zero and three in the regular
- 5:40Speaker 1: season so the Flyers perspective would be, well, we didn't
- 5:42Speaker 1: lose them in regulation, like we beat them and lost
- 5:45Speaker 1: three times in a shootout, So that's why you could
- 5:46Speaker 1: say it could be competitive. But there's no doubt that
- 5:49Speaker 1: Carolina looked great against outaway even though the series was
- 5:51Speaker 1: a sweep. Competitive matchups closed, but Hurricanes' death certainly was
- 5:55Speaker 1: certainly strong in that game. Let's talk further about Carolina.
- 5:58Speaker 1: I mean, they win Game two in double overtime. The
- 6:01Speaker 1: combined goal differential JD was only six goals including are
- 6:04Speaker 1: in Game four. But was your big takeaway from watching
- 6:07Speaker 1: that going, Hey, Carolina is legit and Ottawa was pretenders.
- 6:11Speaker 6: It's I don't think Ottawa honestly, I think Ottawa gets
- 6:15Speaker 6: gets some flak.
- 6:16Speaker 4: Listen.
- 6:17Speaker 6: It's it's tough to you know, lose four straight and
- 6:20Speaker 6: win for straight tes for sure, but how tight those
- 6:23Speaker 6: games were, And I just think Freddie Anderson was the
- 6:27Speaker 6: best player in all series, not just the not just
- 6:32Speaker 6: the Caroline Ottawa. I mean, he was absolutely filthy how
- 6:36Speaker 6: he robbed them. They had some great scoring chances in
- 6:39Speaker 6: overtime in Game two. I just thought that they carried
- 6:43Speaker 6: play Ottawa for for large stretches and they just couldn't
- 6:46Speaker 6: find the net. I mean, he he's stymied Kachuck, he's
- 6:48Speaker 6: stymy Stutzla. So you know, I don't think it's it's
- 6:52Speaker 6: a huge knock on Ottawa. I think Ottawa would would
- 6:55Speaker 6: stomp Pit or Philly. They just got the worst possible
- 6:59Speaker 6: Eastern Conference matchup they can get in the first round
- 7:02Speaker 6: for their a team that was kind of you know,
- 7:04Speaker 6: just clouded their way in. But you know, for me
- 7:06Speaker 6: with Auto, for Caroline, it's Freddy Anderson, it's in that
- 7:08Speaker 6: stank of in line. That's stank of in line is
- 7:10Speaker 6: a matchup nightmare. You can't you can't.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Like you you looks from the best line of the playoffs.
- 7:17Speaker 6: Yeah you look, but you look at Philly and your
- 7:20Speaker 6: second deep hair is Drysdale and York and they got
- 7:24Speaker 6: worked over all game. And York even said it at
- 7:27Speaker 6: the end of the game. He's like, Bladar bailed me
- 7:29Speaker 6: out like six times, like they were they were, they're
- 7:32Speaker 6: they just they're both skilled guys. They're they're good skaters,
- 7:36Speaker 6: but they're not like ultra high speed and they're not
- 7:39Speaker 6: the strongest guys. So like that Stankiven Hall line, I
- 7:42Speaker 6: think they're just gonna run amuck on those because they're
- 7:44Speaker 6: gonna get away from Sanheim and Ristl line, who had
- 7:46Speaker 6: been great. And I just don't think the Steeler pairing
- 7:49Speaker 6: can can match it up either, because they don't move
- 7:51Speaker 6: the puck well enough. So to me, it's just like
- 7:53Speaker 6: a Stanko in that line just makes it incredibly difficult
- 7:57Speaker 6: Nate to match up.
- 7:59Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a that's a really good point.
- 8:01Speaker 3: I love what you said about Freddy because everyone is
- 8:04Speaker 3: all ro ottawa about well, they couldn't score in the
- 8:06Speaker 3: power play, they couldn't score here, could Chuck Stoots all
- 8:08Speaker 3: these guys well, I mean Freddy Anderson, I think, I
- 8:11Speaker 3: mean Carolina as good as they played obviously with their depth,
- 8:15Speaker 3: and you saw you talk about stank COVID line Like,
- 8:16Speaker 3: I don't think to your point, like they don't sweep
- 8:20Speaker 3: the series without Freddy Anderson and Carolina too. I think
- 8:24Speaker 3: it's just you have to look at their D too,
- 8:27Speaker 3: like their D on top of their forward lines, their
- 8:30Speaker 3: their D is it's it's deep too. You got slave In,
- 8:33Speaker 3: you got you got KeAndre Miller. I mean, just the
- 8:36Speaker 3: list keeps going down and and then I think just.
- 8:40Speaker 5: With their depth.
- 8:42Speaker 3: You know, you have just their system right, the way
- 8:44Speaker 3: they play their system, it's it's just it's like a wave.
- 8:48Speaker 5: They just keep coming, they keep coming. And so I'm
- 8:50Speaker 5: with you.
- 8:51Speaker 3: For Philly playing in Carolina, it's you know, to go
- 8:53Speaker 3: into that hornet's nest and try and come out with
- 8:56Speaker 3: a split is gonna be Uh, it's gonna be tough.
- 8:59Speaker 3: It's gonna be really tough for them to to try
- 9:01Speaker 3: and do that.
- 9:02Speaker 1: It wouldn't be audible though without lots of questquestion his
- 9:04Speaker 1: finger pointing a lot of people pissed off, right sends
- 9:07Speaker 1: forward Ridley greg could be suspended, Jady's second punching, Sean
- 9:10Speaker 1: walking me held back by Warren Fogel, and then questions
- 9:13Speaker 1: around Brady kuld Chuck So he went pointless in the
- 9:15Speaker 1: series minus four didn't show up the end of the
- 9:17Speaker 1: season media availability in order to be with his wife the.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Birth second child.
- 9:21Speaker 1: I think that's understandable, but I'm sure some people are
- 9:23Speaker 1: annoyed by that.
- 9:24Speaker 2: So sorry, who Brady kid Chuck was not there for
- 9:27Speaker 2: media failability?
- 9:28Speaker 4: Yeah okay, gay missed it, Yeah right, but.
- 9:30Speaker 2: He was whife. He was there for the birth their
- 9:31Speaker 2: second job.
- 9:32Speaker 1: People are like, what are you running priority? Yeah, dude,
- 9:35Speaker 1: you're gonna go talk to me. At first they go
- 9:36Speaker 1: to meet your child. I'm like, okay, leave me, leave
- 9:39Speaker 1: me get alone.
- 9:40Speaker 4: Oh yeah, you gotta do you gotta do Canadian media.
- 9:42Speaker 4: And then I do.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Think Jadi there becomes more of a sense of like
- 9:47Speaker 1: I heard some opinions being like, why is Brady Kitchuck fighting?
- 9:50Speaker 1: And I'm like, well, that's part of his game, Like
- 9:52Speaker 1: he likes to set the tone like I'm gonna fight,
- 9:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna Scorreing to this, I'm like, yeah, but I'd
- 9:55Speaker 1: rather you be scoring than fighting. I'm like, okay, but
- 9:57Speaker 1: this is just who this guy is, Like he wants
- 9:58Speaker 1: to send the tone whatever man or he can. But
- 10:00Speaker 1: he's facing the heat right now because people are saying
- 10:02Speaker 1: he didn't score, he didn't do what he's to do.
- 10:05Speaker 1: And if I'm Brady Kutchuck, hey, I'm not sure how
- 10:08Speaker 1: much longer I want to be in auto. Potentially the
- 10:10Speaker 1: whispers are already going and it's gonna get louder and
- 10:12Speaker 1: loud of the Brady could Chuck at some point is
- 10:13Speaker 1: gonna want out of Ottawa.
- 10:15Speaker 2: How do you see it?
- 10:16Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 10:17Speaker 6: You know the only problem with Brady. I saw on
- 10:19Speaker 6: that seers is he had scoring chances. He was just
- 10:21Speaker 6: you know, again, Brady's good when he's towing the line
- 10:24Speaker 6: physicality wise and you're getting under it.
- 10:26Speaker 4: But he was taking some bad penalties. Man. You know,
- 10:28Speaker 4: he wasn't disciplined.
- 10:30Speaker 6: He looked frustrated all series, you know, and and from
- 10:33Speaker 6: a guy that you know, I just think he carries.
- 10:37Speaker 4: He tries to carry.
- 10:38Speaker 6: So much on his shoulder, and in doing that, I
- 10:41Speaker 6: think he you know, just I don't know if I
- 10:44Speaker 6: want to say, is it like a try hard?
- 10:45Speaker 4: But it's not a tryhard?
- 10:46Speaker 6: But like the fight at the start of the playoffs,
- 10:49Speaker 6: you're in Carolina, you're Invo Lenovo Center, you're asking Jordan
- 10:55Speaker 6: Staalt like you're giving all the momentum to Carolina unless
- 10:58Speaker 6: you knock him out cold. But I don't think you're
- 11:00Speaker 6: gonna knock out a moose like all out. So so
- 11:04Speaker 6: it's just like a weird it's like a random thing.
- 11:06Speaker 6: It's more like are you doing that to get yourself
- 11:08Speaker 6: going or the team going? Because if it's like purely
- 11:10Speaker 6: for the team, then great, But if it's because it's
- 11:14Speaker 6: a show thing you're doing now where you know you
- 11:16Speaker 6: do anders Lee. You know, it's the first game of
- 11:19Speaker 6: the playoffs, Like what dump the puck in the corner
- 11:22Speaker 6: and go bury somebody like have that be kind of
- 11:24Speaker 6: and score? So you know, I didn't. I didn't think
- 11:27Speaker 6: it was the smartest thing to do, Nate. If you're
- 11:29Speaker 6: at home a Canadian tire center, I'll go for it.
- 11:33Speaker 6: But I just yeah, there's just some things. But again,
- 11:36Speaker 6: going to the Canada thing quickly is yeah, man, it's
- 11:42Speaker 6: just getting to a fever, Like it's just getting to
- 11:44Speaker 6: a point you just gotta they're going to be forced
- 11:46Speaker 6: to trade him because there's too much noise.
- 11:49Speaker 2: So it's Prady coming back.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Nate.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Something's got to give, and it just points like he's
- 11:55Speaker 3: not going to I mean, it just seems like even
- 11:57Speaker 3: in the answers and you know, there's just there's been
- 12:01Speaker 3: so much noise even since even going back to four
- 12:04Speaker 3: Nation and even like after even after the Olympics, it's
- 12:07Speaker 3: just there's always been rumors of you know, his you're
- 12:09Speaker 3: gonna be there, is he's gonna be there long term.
- 12:11Speaker 3: And I agree with you to you on that fight too.
- 12:14Speaker 3: I I you know, I understand, and I think you're right.
- 12:17Speaker 3: I think he's trying to get himself going. I think
- 12:19Speaker 3: that's a lot of why Brady plays the way he
- 12:21Speaker 3: does and he fights is because you know, you can
- 12:23Speaker 3: see even after he fights, he'll get a goal, or
- 12:25Speaker 3: he'll get a big shift, or he'll you know, you
- 12:27Speaker 3: can see his game kind of get better.
- 12:31Speaker 5: And I you know, for for him moving on, I
- 12:34Speaker 5: don't know.
- 12:34Speaker 3: I mean, it's it just looks imminent to me, maybe
- 12:37Speaker 3: that he's he's going to end up on another team,
- 12:40Speaker 3: or you know, who knows, maybe maybe they find a
- 12:42Speaker 3: way to get him.
- 12:42Speaker 5: Down to Florida with his brother.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Never know, to imagine Panthers fans just licking their chops
- 12:48Speaker 1: right now.
- 12:48Speaker 4: I can't. I'll quit watch eighty two games.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Well, this week was much more predictable, Prestus Trophy winning
- 12:56Speaker 1: Avalanche wrapping up the King Sayson and Coppetar's career in
- 13:00Speaker 1: four straight, holding l A five goals in the series.
- 13:03Speaker 1: They closed a dominant five to one victory on Sunday night.
- 13:06Speaker 1: So Colorado now gets to rest while Minnesota and Dallas
- 13:08Speaker 1: beat the wheels off each other to find who plays
- 13:11Speaker 1: the Avs in the second round.
- 13:12Speaker 2: It's an immortal question. Jady Russ versus Rest. You know,
- 13:15Speaker 2: it's a long playoff.
- 13:16Speaker 1: You want to keep start, but I don't know what
- 13:18Speaker 1: team doesn't want to just sweep and just hang out
- 13:20Speaker 1: for a little bit. Maybe that game one of the next series.
- 13:22Speaker 1: It takes you a little while to get going. But
- 13:24Speaker 1: if you can sweep the Kings and now rest while
- 13:26Speaker 1: Dallas and Minnesota do what they have to do, that
- 13:28Speaker 1: makes sense. First couple of games were close enough against
- 13:30Speaker 1: the Kings, but you saw Colorado had more taut was
- 13:32Speaker 1: able to emerge victories, especially later in the series.
- 13:34Speaker 5: How'd you see it?
- 13:36Speaker 6: Listen, l I played as good as they could possibly play,
- 13:41Speaker 6: and it was not enough, and it was enough to
- 13:43Speaker 6: get them swept. They kept it as close as they could.
- 13:46Speaker 6: You know, their whole thing was like they couldn't chase offense.
- 13:49Speaker 6: They never did even when they were down too, they
- 13:51Speaker 6: didn't chase. They played their game. You know, I thought,
- 13:54Speaker 6: you know, Adrian Kempy, I thought at times struggled a
- 13:57Speaker 6: little bit. I could expected a little bit more out
- 14:00Speaker 6: of him in that series. But yeah, overall, I just think,
- 14:04Speaker 6: you know, Anton Forsburg was great.
- 14:06Speaker 4: It just wasn't enough.
- 14:07Speaker 6: You're just you're just not anywhere close to the Colorado Avalanche.
- 14:12Speaker 4: So it's just we all kind of knew it.
- 14:14Speaker 6: We all said five to be nice, and to be honestly,
- 14:16Speaker 6: they could have won game one. They're right there, and
- 14:18Speaker 6: I thought they all played Colorado. But it just goes
- 14:21Speaker 6: to show you that when Colorado even has their A minus,
- 14:24Speaker 6: you know, B plus game, they're gonna beat most teams
- 14:28Speaker 6: in the NHL. And I thought they found their game
- 14:30Speaker 6: in game four, and it was it was you could
- 14:33Speaker 6: see Nate Dogg had that Nate dog game. Caale mccarbs,
- 14:37Speaker 6: like the first two games, it looked like he was
- 14:39Speaker 6: waiting himself in. They thought it would be a little
- 14:42Speaker 6: bit easier, and I just think now they're rolling now
- 14:45Speaker 6: to your point, they're a little bit of rust waiting
- 14:47Speaker 6: for you know, the two teams that shall not be
- 14:50Speaker 6: named to go seven games. And once they do and
- 14:55Speaker 6: they're tired and come play Colorado, I think Colorado's gonna
- 14:58Speaker 6: have an easier time.
- 14:59Speaker 4: They're gonna be a little bit softened up.
- 15:01Speaker 6: So I just think it's I just think Colorado's roll
- 15:04Speaker 6: into the the finals, but they just the way Wedgewood's playing,
- 15:08Speaker 6: the way this Decor is playing, I mean, I don't
- 15:11Speaker 6: think they're going to be stopped ate out of eyes.
- 15:14Speaker 4: I just my team to win for a while. Now.
- 15:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean we talk about how much parody there
- 15:20Speaker 5: is in the league.
- 15:21Speaker 4: There's not that.
- 15:21Speaker 3: There wasn't that much parody in this first round between
- 15:24Speaker 3: those two teams just looking at and watching it. I
- 15:26Speaker 3: mean the Kings they had some good games, they played well,
- 15:29Speaker 3: but they just did They didn't have another level like
- 15:32Speaker 3: Colorado did. I mean you could see the other level
- 15:34Speaker 3: from McKinnon and even mccar that last game, just some
- 15:37Speaker 3: of the stuff he did in the last two games.
- 15:39Speaker 3: He just put on another show. So I just for
- 15:43Speaker 3: Colorado too. I think the thing that concerns me and
- 15:46Speaker 3: just from experience, you know, and you know JD, when
- 15:49Speaker 3: you have that long a layoff, like it just depends
- 15:52Speaker 3: how long the layoff is. I feel like if it's
- 15:54Speaker 3: a week, if it's longer than that, then it can
- 15:56Speaker 3: be a little bit concerning. I just know from past,
- 15:59Speaker 3: you know, sweeping teams and then getting a team that
- 16:02Speaker 3: goes seven games and then they play you and they're
- 16:06Speaker 3: fire and all cylinders and you're like, okay, we gotta
- 16:08Speaker 3: you know, we gotta get going a little bit here. So,
- 16:10Speaker 3: but it's a calling an avalanche and with what they've
- 16:13Speaker 3: done and like you said that, they're just juggernaut and
- 16:16Speaker 3: maybe and maybe playing against the Kings is is helpful
- 16:19Speaker 3: for them down the road, you know, playing against a
- 16:20Speaker 3: team like that, you know, sometimes playing against teams like
- 16:23Speaker 3: that can help you moving forward for the next round.
- 16:25Speaker 3: So Colorado, they're they're looking pretty damn good there.
- 16:30Speaker 4: La was a fluffer.
- 16:33Speaker 1: I just want to get them warmed up until it
- 16:35Speaker 1: hits action. Good way, Yeah, heat up a little bit.
- 16:43Speaker 1: I should do boogie nights now for Sinupel in sixties.
- 16:46Speaker 1: All right, Friday night will.
- 16:47Speaker 5: Be a doozy.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Three Themason games on the docket.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Halves, Lightning, Bruin Sabers, Golden Knights, Mammoth Tal. You're most
- 16:54Speaker 1: looking forward to the Habs. I want a little Montreal
- 16:56Speaker 1: minute here. We don't have Daryald Demrzon. Normally JD's dad
- 16:58Speaker 1: comes on as our Monstreal insider. You are going to
- 17:00Speaker 1: talk Halbs. What do you got for me?
- 17:03Speaker 7: I mean the building is going to be absolutely insane,
- 17:07Speaker 7: that's for sure. So they're going to get a huge
- 17:10Speaker 7: lift from the crowd. I was very impressed with how
- 17:14Speaker 7: they played in Tampa for Game five. I thought that
- 17:16Speaker 7: third period was their probably their best defensive period of
- 17:20Speaker 7: the whole season. You know, they were very locked in.
- 17:23Speaker 7: You know, they gave up a lot of shots, but
- 17:25Speaker 7: nothing that that scary. I mean, they look good and
- 17:28Speaker 7: this is all without any production from the first line.
- 17:31Speaker 7: So I am making the bold prediction that that Suzuki
- 17:34Speaker 7: Slavkovski kaw Field line shows up and gets at least
- 17:37Speaker 7: one goal in this game. So it's gonna be a
- 17:40Speaker 7: lot of fun looking forward to it.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Yeah, Texia, by the way, breaking that time of the
- 17:43Speaker 1: third per and yak abdobus h d thirty eight saves
- 17:46Speaker 1: helping much all did one victory of advancing first time,
- 17:48Speaker 1: says twenty twenty one.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Go ahead. Well it's been there. You know.
- 17:52Speaker 6: Texi is on a three game point streak, and so
- 17:55Speaker 6: is zech Bullduke and then Kirby DK's got three points
- 17:58Speaker 6: in three games. Their fourth line, that line that Marty
- 18:01Speaker 6: sat that we put together when Kirby Dock was getting
- 18:03Speaker 6: chased out of Montreal. UH has been the difference maker.
- 18:08Speaker 6: They've literally been the difference maker. Dobuc has been great.
- 18:11Speaker 6: Uh Slavkovsky has been since his three goal game is
- 18:14Speaker 6: dash five and that doesn't have a point, so.
- 18:19Speaker 4: He has not has not been great.
- 18:21Speaker 6: We you know, we're hoping he'd turned into this budding
- 18:24Speaker 6: superstar and he was.
- 18:26Speaker 4: We thought he was. He was there.
- 18:28Speaker 6: You know, we'd all talked about it for hours pre
- 18:32Speaker 6: show that you know, this is laps time and since
- 18:36Speaker 6: that game, dash forward, sorry dash forward, but no points.
- 18:39Speaker 6: So but again, when your fourth line is able to
- 18:43Speaker 6: outplay and outscore the other team, and you know, I'll
- 18:46Speaker 6: get to Tampa in a second, Nate just with you know,
- 18:50Speaker 6: koocher Off and Vassilevsky. But you know, when your fourth
- 18:54Speaker 6: line is is outplaying the other team's second line scoring,
- 18:59Speaker 6: you're you're in good shape as a team because you know,
- 19:02Speaker 6: you can just buy your buy some time for the
- 19:05Speaker 6: first line.
- 19:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean you could go as deep as as
- 19:11Speaker 3: their depth defenseman too, like even a guy like arbor Jack,
- 19:14Speaker 3: guy like how good has he been this series?
- 19:15Speaker 5: How good has he been? He's playing his role? He
- 19:20Speaker 5: looks great.
- 19:20Speaker 3: So I mean you can go down the list of
- 19:22Speaker 3: guy's depth guys, especially for Montreal, and they're just they've
- 19:25Speaker 3: just been better. And then I Brendan Gallagher man he
- 19:28Speaker 3: comes in gets a big goal, I mean just heart
- 19:31Speaker 3: and soul guy for Montreal, Like that was awesome and
- 19:34Speaker 3: and I can only imagine what that crowd is going
- 19:37Speaker 3: to be like with Brendan Gallagher back in the lineup
- 19:40Speaker 3: playing scrumbling it up in front of the net with
- 19:42Speaker 3: with Tampa and and to your point of Tampa man,
- 19:44Speaker 3: like it's like that goal that Basilevski gives up the
- 19:49Speaker 3: third goal and he just he hasn't been Vassie of
- 19:53Speaker 3: this series.
- 19:54Speaker 5: He really hasn't.
- 19:55Speaker 3: I just think there's been there's been goals that he's
- 19:58Speaker 3: just they're uncharacteristic that he would let in. And he's in,
- 20:02Speaker 3: he'd made some big saves, he's he's done what he's done.
- 20:04Speaker 3: But but you know, he hasn't been the Vassilevski to
- 20:06Speaker 3: get Tampa on the driver's seat. Now. I mean it's
- 20:10Speaker 3: still Tampa, but there's still multiple Cup winners on that team,
- 20:13Speaker 3: and I expect a really good game from them. And
- 20:15Speaker 3: we always know the fourth games hardest to win, and
- 20:17Speaker 3: Montreal is young, so they're going to have their work
- 20:19Speaker 3: cutout for him against Tampa in that game.
- 20:21Speaker 6: That Vassie has not won back to back playoff games
- 20:25Speaker 6: since twenty twenty two.
- 20:27Speaker 4: He's a little stat for you.
- 20:29Speaker 6: And then right now with coach, he's got one goal
- 20:32Speaker 6: in fifty four shots, and he's got one goal in
- 20:36Speaker 6: his last twenty one playoff games.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Now, so yeah, two in his last twenty one.
- 20:41Speaker 4: One in his last twenty one.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Wow, that's your boy. You want him to win a heart.
- 20:45Speaker 2: This guy sucks in the playoffs.
- 20:47Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean vastly. He hasn't won back to back
- 20:49Speaker 6: games like Vassie. Just that goal in texted that just
- 20:52Speaker 6: can't go in, just can't. And he knows that and
- 20:55Speaker 6: he's listening. He's a first ballot Hall of Famer. But yeah, there,
- 20:59Speaker 6: I'm a little worried. I you know what I'm gonna
- 21:01Speaker 6: say quickly. I think Marty San Luis has slightly out
- 21:05Speaker 6: coached John Cooper in this series. Wow, he's pushed all
- 21:11Speaker 6: the right buttons and put some guys in that no
- 21:13Speaker 6: one expected to and back some guys and I don't
- 21:17Speaker 6: know if Yeah, he's kind of it's been a good
- 21:19Speaker 6: coaching battle, but I think Marty's out coaching him right now.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Well, think of the challenge right now for Tampa.
- 21:24Speaker 1: I mean again, Gendi has mentioned if Philly Pittsburgh was
- 21:26Speaker 1: exactly a picasso. This series has been entertaining, all five
- 21:29Speaker 1: games decided by one goal, including overtime in the first three.
- 21:33Speaker 1: But this is a Lightning team which is one loss
- 21:35Speaker 1: away from being eliminated in the first round.
- 21:37Speaker 2: For the fourth straight season.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Like at some point you would call it a coach
- 21:40Speaker 1: kate fourth straight years kick in the first round, and
- 21:42Speaker 1: their home crowd. They've lost ten of their last twelve
- 21:45Speaker 1: home games in the playoffs, despite four hundred and sixty
- 21:48Speaker 1: consecutive sellouts. If it's crazy, you can't you can't defend
- 21:51Speaker 1: your home barn and you keep losing the first round
- 21:53Speaker 1: and you're supposed to be a juggernaut.
- 21:55Speaker 2: That's pretty that's pretty eye opening.
- 21:58Speaker 4: It was quiet all It was quiet in the Tampa game.
- 22:01Speaker 5: Yeah, it was.
- 22:02Speaker 6: And I don't know if I think it was the
- 22:03Speaker 6: ESPNS maybe, but it could have been.
- 22:05Speaker 5: It could have been.
- 22:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean Tampa they av to your point, I
- 22:10Speaker 3: think they you know, they did struggle if you think
- 22:14Speaker 3: about it, like they went on that huge stretch during
- 22:16Speaker 3: the season. They were hot, at their hottest team in
- 22:17Speaker 3: league for how long and then you know headman goes,
- 22:21Speaker 3: you know, he's not with the team and a couple
- 22:23Speaker 3: of more injuries, but they they kind of struggled down
- 22:26Speaker 3: the stretch and they never really were back to their
- 22:29Speaker 3: you know, top game they were in the regular season.
- 22:31Speaker 3: So I don't know if that has something to do
- 22:32Speaker 3: with it, but they just you know, you have to
- 22:34Speaker 3: give Montreal credit. I think Montreal the way they've played,
- 22:37Speaker 3: they played more mature than them. They've played better defensively,
- 22:39Speaker 3: Dobus has outplayed Bassileski. Their depth's been better, and it
- 22:42Speaker 3: just been better. So I mean, at the end of
- 22:45Speaker 3: the day, that's that's kind of what it's come down
- 22:47Speaker 3: to it. And but Tampa's gonna have to have their
- 22:49Speaker 3: best game going in Montreal, no doubt about it.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Bruins sabers Nate, you said the Bruins are gonna win
- 22:53Speaker 1: this series. You have the guts to call the upset.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Boston looked great in Game one until Buffalo came back.
- 22:57Speaker 1: They bounce back game too, but then Buffalo Mergi is victorious.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Now Boston's notatches momentum back in overtime in Game five.
- 23:02Speaker 3: How do you see this shapeay up just needs Sway
- 23:05Speaker 3: to keep being Sway, just needs Sway to keep being Sway,
- 23:09Speaker 3: that's it. If he plays like he did last game again,
- 23:13Speaker 3: I mean yeah, they and they and they have a
- 23:15Speaker 3: better response than they did last home game.
- 23:17Speaker 5: Yeah, they have a chance to take this seven. I
- 23:19Speaker 5: think more.
- 23:19Speaker 3: I think Boston, the way they play Pasta can keep
- 23:23Speaker 3: getting big goals like he has. I mean they they have.
- 23:26Speaker 3: They have a good team, and they're and they're hard
- 23:28Speaker 3: to play against. That's one thing. And but I do
- 23:31Speaker 3: believe that if Buffalo, you know, Buffalo has got more
- 23:34Speaker 3: talent and if they can you know, score the power play,
- 23:38Speaker 3: do all those things that you know, we know Buffalo,
- 23:41Speaker 3: when they get hot and they get going, they're a
- 23:43Speaker 3: hard team to beat. So I mean, going back to Boston.
- 23:45Speaker 3: For Boston, I think the big thing is just Sway.
- 23:48Speaker 3: I mean, Sway is the X factor for the Bruins.
- 23:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:51Speaker 6: I just I don't know if they can beat you know, Buffalo,
- 23:55Speaker 6: three straight games. I I just think Buffalo, unless Buffalo
- 23:58Speaker 6: gets really frustrated. But they've seemed calm all series. Uh
- 24:02Speaker 6: you know, sorry, they've seem calm. After Game three, they
- 24:05Speaker 6: kind of settle themselves, and they had those three days
- 24:08Speaker 6: off in between games. I think it really helped them
- 24:10Speaker 6: that so uh yeah, I just I just don't see
- 24:14Speaker 6: it in that series to your point, you know, unless
- 24:17Speaker 6: swim In steals two games and Pasta scores, which is
- 24:22Speaker 6: big to see Pasta get a nice goal there and
- 24:25Speaker 6: in old school Pasta fashion just towilering swirling the spaghetti catabanata.
- 24:31Speaker 6: Uh and he put lion in a fucking pretzel. But
- 24:34Speaker 6: I just think, yeah, I just don't. I don't see
- 24:37Speaker 6: it for me. And it's one of those series that
- 24:39Speaker 6: I had buffalo pencil the whole time and I haven't.
- 24:42Speaker 6: I haven't been nervous, nervous, not nervous for a second.
- 24:45Speaker 1: All right, last thought, real quick, g do I want
- 24:47Speaker 1: to get your thoughts at Utahn Vegas door FIEV six
- 24:51Speaker 1: playoff hat trick and franchise issue. So I scored, scored,
- 24:56Speaker 1: He had two goals, by the way, and thirteen career
- 24:58Speaker 1: playoff games for lasting as a game of his life.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Jack Eck said, was a huge game by him, is
- 25:02Speaker 1: a huge part of our team now. Their team scored
- 25:04Speaker 1: in the first overtime the first time this series either
- 25:06Speaker 1: side failed and a praid to hit the back of
- 25:08Speaker 1: the net. So it was a hell of a game,
- 25:09Speaker 1: I think from all perspectives, and now Vegas is on
- 25:12Speaker 1: the verge.
- 25:12Speaker 2: They're up three to two in this series.
- 25:14Speaker 6: I think, to me, this has been my favorite series
- 25:17Speaker 6: to watch. This series is fast. It's mean, there's some
- 25:22Speaker 6: great scoring, some skill. Uh, it's been back and forth.
- 25:26Speaker 6: There's been like I think I saw yesterday, there's like
- 25:30Speaker 6: fourteen to It's gonna be a wide margin for me
- 25:33Speaker 6: because my memory all the concussions, like fourteen to eighteen
- 25:37Speaker 6: lead changes in.
- 25:38Speaker 2: The steen to eighteen.
- 25:39Speaker 4: Okay, it's just a lot of changes. It's a lot.
- 25:42Speaker 6: Italicn look that up probably and double check it if
- 25:45Speaker 6: he wants to. But it's, uh, yeah, it's been. It's
- 25:50Speaker 6: been really good. It's just been You're getting scoring from
- 25:53Speaker 6: the top players. Everybody's kind of chipping in. I mean
- 25:57Speaker 6: that game was back and forth. They tie it up
- 25:59Speaker 6: late to what a what a yeomens, what a quick
- 26:03Speaker 6: up by Erasmus Anderson to Jack Eichel and then just
- 26:07Speaker 6: incredible passing play. And yeah, pablodor Ifiev gets benched in
- 26:11Speaker 6: Game four in the third period and then comes back
- 26:14Speaker 6: and responds with a hat trick. So good for him
- 26:17Speaker 6: towards his you know, towards you look at him on
- 26:19Speaker 6: the bench. It looks like for the first time in
- 26:22Speaker 6: a long time that he's been coaching, he's like having fun.
- 26:25Speaker 4: Yeah, he's just like enjoying it like you usually see.
- 26:28Speaker 6: He's got the proper yeah, because he's always you know,
- 26:31Speaker 6: they've wanted him to like help usher young teams in
- 26:34Speaker 6: and I think he's just an old grumpy man and
- 26:37Speaker 6: didn't want to work for the young kids anymore. So
- 26:39Speaker 6: I think now that he's got this like veteran team,
- 26:42Speaker 6: he's like, this is fucking awesome.
- 26:43Speaker 1: We'll make a hard left turn and bringing Dean Everson
- 26:46Speaker 1: coming up after this an NHL and script to the
- 26:47Speaker 1: former coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Maybe you'll see him on television soon. We'll ask him
- 26:51Speaker 2: about that.
- 26:52Speaker 1: His career in hockey lots of great stories, including getting
- 26:55Speaker 1: caught with a hot mic.
- 26:56Speaker 2: That's coming up next our next guest.
- 27:11Speaker 1: Draft in the fifth round, eighty ninth overall by the
- 27:13Speaker 1: Washington Capitals in nineteen eighty two NHL draft. He collected
- 27:16Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty nine goals, three and seventy two points,
- 27:19Speaker 1: and eight hundred and two NHL games with the Capitals, Whalers, Yes, Sharks, Stars,
- 27:24Speaker 1: and Flames. After retiring as a player, began a coaching
- 27:27Speaker 1: career that saw become the head coach of the Minnesota
- 27:29Speaker 1: Wild and the Columbus Blue Jackets, most appointly, the Pride
- 27:32Speaker 1: of Flinn Flon Manitoba.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Dean Everson, How are you, coach. Good to see you.
- 27:36Speaker 8: Thanks for having me, guys. I'm I'm doing great.
- 27:40Speaker 1: I was able to see you during the season, of
- 27:41Speaker 1: course with the Blue Jackets, and I know things are
- 27:43Speaker 1: up and down as far as the season went, but
- 27:45Speaker 1: it looks like you're enjoying life right now. I know
- 27:47Speaker 1: you're heading to the Kentucky Derby this week, and how
- 27:49Speaker 1: where have you made of your free time?
- 27:52Speaker 8: Well, yeah, you gotta.
- 27:55Speaker 9: I gotta start doing stuff, right I Actually, fortunately, I'm
- 27:59Speaker 9: doing some stuff that I've always wanted to do. I
- 28:01Speaker 9: got down to Pinehurst a couple of weeks ago when
- 28:05Speaker 9: played that.
- 28:05Speaker 8: Amazing, amazing area compound.
- 28:10Speaker 9: But yeah, never been to the Derby and have the
- 28:12Speaker 9: opportunity to do it, obviously, and I'm just gonna take
- 28:16Speaker 9: the take advantage of it. I know Nate and I
- 28:19Speaker 9: were just speaking about it and how much fun it is.
- 28:21Speaker 9: I'm I'm really looking forward to the whole the whole
- 28:24Speaker 9: production of it, as well obviously as watching the race.
- 28:29Speaker 3: Yeah, Avy, there is nothing like the Derby. I got
- 28:32Speaker 3: to experience it last year and it's one of a kind.
- 28:35Speaker 5: It's one of one. So I'm actually I'm really excited
- 28:38Speaker 5: for you.
- 28:40Speaker 2: What what is coach in for the mint julips here?
- 28:42Speaker 3: I mean he's in for all of it, I mean
- 28:44Speaker 3: the even the the actual race of the Derby, like
- 28:47Speaker 3: leading up to it, when everyone's sitting in the stands,
- 28:50Speaker 3: it's you just know you're in a place where everyone's
- 28:53Speaker 3: got skin in the game.
- 28:54Speaker 5: If you're just your everyone's pumped.
- 28:55Speaker 4: Up for it.
- 28:56Speaker 9: So everybody talks about those mid things they said, they said,
- 28:59Speaker 9: you'll hate it for the first and then and then
- 29:02Speaker 9: you'll grow and then.
- 29:03Speaker 8: But I've I've talked other people.
- 29:04Speaker 9: They said, well, you got to go to the infield,
- 29:06Speaker 9: and I'm like, I Am not going to the infield.
- 29:09Speaker 8: Not a chance.
- 29:10Speaker 5: No, you don't want to do that. You don't want
- 29:12Speaker 5: to go to the field, right right.
- 29:15Speaker 3: But I digress it. You know, we're I guess we'll
- 29:18Speaker 3: get into it. I mean we're Dean. Were you surprised
- 29:21Speaker 3: by you know, the decision to make the coaching change
- 29:24Speaker 3: and are you are you looking to get back into
- 29:27Speaker 3: coaching or you do you want to take some time
- 29:29Speaker 3: off and enjoy the derby?
- 29:32Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 29:34Speaker 9: Yeah, you know what I I've I've got a pretty
- 29:36Speaker 9: positive attitude, was that we were surprised.
- 29:38Speaker 8: Yeah, we were surprised.
- 29:40Speaker 9: We thought we'd have another opportunity or more of an opportunity.
- 29:46Speaker 9: You know, we're five hundred at the time. You know,
- 29:48Speaker 9: and and and Bones came in and did a great job,
- 29:51Speaker 9: no question. But do I feel that, you know, the
- 29:54Speaker 9: team was on the verge. We had won the night
- 29:56Speaker 9: before in Utah. We you know, we were progressing to
- 30:00Speaker 9: playing well. We were playing well in the third period,
- 30:03Speaker 9: which was a struggle for so yeah, I mean are
- 30:07Speaker 9: you always surprised? Yeah, it was a little different than
- 30:09Speaker 9: the one in MANI. You know, we had a lot
- 30:12Speaker 9: of opportunity to get through the first round, which they're
- 30:15Speaker 9: trying to do now there, So you know, there's a
- 30:18Speaker 9: little bit different circumstances. But definitely, you know, surprise. But
- 30:23Speaker 9: do I want to stay in Yeah, one hundred percent.
- 30:26Speaker 9: You know, I'm full of energy.
- 30:28Speaker 8: I love the game. Do I want to stay in it? Absolutely?
- 30:33Speaker 9: Do I want to have the right opportunity, yes, And
- 30:37Speaker 9: I'm fortunate I've got some term on my contract for
- 30:40Speaker 9: next year that I don't have to rush into something
- 30:44Speaker 9: or look around or right away, and I'm just gonna
- 30:46Speaker 9: sit back and I'm gonna learn.
- 30:48Speaker 8: And and be accountable.
- 30:50Speaker 9: For what happened as much as I can say, I'm surprised,
- 30:53Speaker 9: and you know I disagree with it. There are things
- 30:55Speaker 9: that obviously you correct. And I've said this before in
- 30:59Speaker 9: a couple of podcasts and interviews. I now know why
- 31:03Speaker 9: coaches get recycled. And you know, when I'm a younger coach,
- 31:06Speaker 9: I'm like coaching in the minors and the American leaguer
- 31:09Speaker 9: in junior, it's.
- 31:10Speaker 8: Like, why don't they give new guys a chance?
- 31:13Speaker 5: Right?
- 31:13Speaker 9: But when you get fired, you you've been there, you
- 31:16Speaker 9: know it, you understand it, and then you have an opportunity,
- 31:19Speaker 9: like I have an opportunity now to watch these games
- 31:22Speaker 9: and to dial in what I.
- 31:24Speaker 8: Do different and and.
- 31:26Speaker 9: Talk to different people, and so you can still learn
- 31:30Speaker 9: without being in the actual fire, which I'm trying to
- 31:34Speaker 9: do now. And I know for a fact I'll be
- 31:37Speaker 9: a better coach when I get back after it.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Well, it's a great response, coach because you're right. You
- 31:41Speaker 1: can be disagreeing with the decision and still be accountable.
- 31:44Speaker 1: It's like, yeah, I think we should have improved a
- 31:45Speaker 1: little bit better, but yeah, I accept the responsibility. And
- 31:48Speaker 1: that's why coaches get a second chance, right you. If
- 31:51Speaker 1: you blast ownership or blast management, well then the next
- 31:53Speaker 1: team might be a little bit morehesitant. But if you're classy,
- 31:55Speaker 1: but as you've been, it helps moving forward. And I
- 31:57Speaker 1: look at what happened. We have Bruce casti on and
- 31:59Speaker 1: Bruce did all the right things about torts taking ors.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Listen Towards is a great guy. He's done a great job.
- 32:03Speaker 2: I wish him well. As you mentioned, Bo's an excellent job.
- 32:06Speaker 2: I'm curious.
- 32:07Speaker 1: I mean, obviously the Blue Jackets had a little search,
- 32:09Speaker 1: but then unfortunately fell apart.
- 32:10Speaker 2: What did you make of bones his postgame.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Response after the last game, because I certainly loved his
- 32:15Speaker 1: passion and his candor.
- 32:17Speaker 9: Well, I'll be quite honest, I know exactly where he's
- 32:20Speaker 9: coming from.
- 32:23Speaker 8: I mean, I was, I was in that room.
- 32:25Speaker 9: I know some personalities, and I know you know what
- 32:29Speaker 9: what his frustration was, and you know, and and you
- 32:34Speaker 9: know he came back the next day and said, you
- 32:35Speaker 9: know what he said as far as they didn't care.
- 32:37Speaker 9: That that group cares, and and you know, and actually
- 32:40Speaker 9: him and I have text after that, Him and I
- 32:42Speaker 9: text after.
- 32:43Speaker 8: He got the job, and they care obviously.
- 32:47Speaker 9: Are there things that, you know, coaches think should be
- 32:50Speaker 9: done differently? Yeah, are the things that we should do
- 32:54Speaker 9: to help the players. Yeah, there things we should do
- 32:57Speaker 9: to help management too, Yeah, for sure. But you know, yeah,
- 33:01Speaker 9: he's frustrated. I was a little bit surprised because they
- 33:05Speaker 9: you know, the game was out of hand, but he
- 33:07Speaker 9: it was probably you know, building up and and he's
- 33:11Speaker 9: a fiery guy. Him and I had a little confrontation
- 33:15Speaker 9: when he was in Winnipeg and I was in Mini
- 33:17Speaker 9: and we've joked about that since. And so yeah, I
- 33:21Speaker 9: mean coaches have passion. He has passion, I have passion.
- 33:25Speaker 9: And he let it out. I know that he went
- 33:28Speaker 9: into the room and spoke to the group and individuals
- 33:32Speaker 9: and and you know, I'm sure they're fine, but there
- 33:35Speaker 9: there are a.
- 33:35Speaker 8: Great bunch of guys in there. They'll figure it out.
- 33:38Speaker 9: And they'll get it on the on the you know,
- 33:40Speaker 9: the right right track very soon.
- 33:43Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 33:44Speaker 3: I played for Bones and he's an emotional guy. That's
- 33:47Speaker 3: for sure, And uh, you know, I was I was
- 33:50Speaker 3: laughing because I thought you're maybe gonna mention that that
- 33:53Speaker 3: bench scuffle you guys had when you go back and forth.
- 33:56Speaker 3: But then I figured you guys probably cross pass at
- 33:58Speaker 3: some point, because everyone cross passed with Rick Bonus at
- 34:00Speaker 3: some point. So, you know, did you You played a
- 34:05Speaker 3: long time and you were a guy that was extremely
- 34:08Speaker 3: hard to play against, and a lot of your teams
- 34:10Speaker 3: I've noticed, you know, in Columbus and in Mini like that,
- 34:14Speaker 3: the common theme is always hard to play against, and
- 34:17Speaker 3: which I think is one of the best compliments you
- 34:19Speaker 3: can get. You know, are you noticing, especially your old
- 34:23Speaker 3: team Minnesota, like, are you noticing obviously it's one of
- 34:25Speaker 3: the best series in the first round. Are you noticing
- 34:28Speaker 3: anything particular from this series or certain players that used
- 34:31Speaker 3: to coach that are that are really jumping out to you?
- 34:33Speaker 8: Well?
- 34:33Speaker 9: I told Billy Garran he should have traded for Hughes
- 34:36Speaker 9: a long time ago.
- 34:37Speaker 8: Maybe maybe maybe maybe we would have maybe we would
- 34:40Speaker 8: have had some little bit more success.
- 34:43Speaker 9: But you know what, he texted me right after I
- 34:45Speaker 9: said that. I said it on a podcast or something,
- 34:47Speaker 9: and he texted me right away, and he's just he
- 34:50Speaker 9: just was howling about it. But I mean, like when
- 34:54Speaker 9: I was there, you know, it was the suitor parise situation,
- 34:57Speaker 9: so we weren't able to move forward.
- 34:59Speaker 8: And I'm not saying it's all personnel.
- 35:00Speaker 9: There's things that again that that I'm accountable as a
- 35:04Speaker 9: head coach coach, and we were as a as a
- 35:05Speaker 9: coaching staff. But they play hard, they played gritty, they
- 35:09Speaker 9: played the right way. They're big, strong, They've added some
- 35:13Speaker 9: some wonderful pieces I think in order to solidify their team. Obviously,
- 35:18Speaker 9: Corol Caprizov is exceptional, like exceptional, and then when you
- 35:24Speaker 9: do add a guy like that, and then you got
- 35:26Speaker 9: the Bowldies and Eric's and X and obviously zuker Ls
- 35:29Speaker 9: and you can go down the list, but you had
- 35:31Speaker 9: a guy like Hughes and it just it really elevated everything, right,
- 35:35Speaker 9: I mean, it's just he he does everything on the
- 35:38Speaker 9: ice and everybody obviously there's offense to him, but he
- 35:42Speaker 9: does so many great things defensively as well. So yeah,
- 35:46Speaker 9: I've been I've been really intrigued with their team.
- 35:48Speaker 8: I'm watching it.
- 35:49Speaker 9: Obviously we lost to the Dallas Stars when I was
- 35:52Speaker 9: there in Mini, so I'm watching some of the similarities
- 35:55Speaker 9: with the penalties and and all the things that happened
- 35:58Speaker 9: in our series.
- 35:59Speaker 8: And so it's it's fun to watch.
- 36:01Speaker 9: It's fun for me to gather information, as a said,
- 36:04Speaker 9: to learn from those situations.
- 36:06Speaker 5: I can.
- 36:06Speaker 9: I can see corrections that I should have made during
- 36:10Speaker 9: that that that Hines is making now so and their
- 36:14Speaker 9: team is making. So that's the exciting part. And you know,
- 36:17Speaker 9: I was asked the other day like how do I watch?
- 36:20Speaker 9: And I watch with my phone in my hand and
- 36:23Speaker 9: and you know, with my notes, and I just go,
- 36:25Speaker 9: you know, second period, you know, watch the neutral zone
- 36:29Speaker 9: of the Minnesota Wild or watch this face off play
- 36:31Speaker 9: from the Buffalo Sabers. So it's so easy now with
- 36:34Speaker 9: this technology to go back and you don't have to
- 36:37Speaker 9: take the game, which I do, but you can go
- 36:40Speaker 9: back and find all those clips and hopefully, God willing,
- 36:44Speaker 9: when that opportunity comes, I can use those two better
- 36:47Speaker 9: our team.
- 36:48Speaker 1: That's very cool that you're watching a very active level
- 36:51Speaker 1: rather than being passive.
- 36:52Speaker 2: All right, let's get to the good stuff.
- 36:53Speaker 1: You became a head coach the Ants after playing some
- 36:55Speaker 1: of your old Whalers teams did the same. Joel Quinnville,
- 36:59Speaker 1: Kevin Deneen, Dave Tippett, John Anderson, Ron France has become
- 37:02Speaker 1: an executive, Mike Leu because an agent. Ray f r
- 37:05Speaker 1: becomes a broadcaster, Chicken parm what's it like all these
- 37:08Speaker 1: old faces, the great years in Hartford now around the NHL.
- 37:11Speaker 9: Well, first, Ray and I were were roommates in Binghamton.
- 37:16Speaker 9: I was drafted by Washington, he was drafted by Hartford.
- 37:19Speaker 9: I ended up getting traded Hartford. But we lived together
- 37:21Speaker 9: in Binghamton. So him and I have been good friends.
- 37:24Speaker 9: We've through the years. We've had a nice rivalry as
- 37:28Speaker 9: well when we played in the Western.
- 37:29Speaker 8: League and so.
- 37:32Speaker 9: But yeah, everybody's asked like how why and you know,
- 37:36Speaker 9: and the series that was done that was fantastic. Obviously
- 37:41Speaker 9: you know about the franchise and and all of that
- 37:45Speaker 9: was amazing.
- 37:47Speaker 8: I don't know why.
- 37:48Speaker 9: Like I talk, I talked to our guys all the time,
- 37:51Speaker 9: and we you know, we we had a couple of
- 37:53Speaker 9: reunions back in the day at Joel Quinville's place in
- 37:57Speaker 9: Hartford after he won a cup. I think it was
- 38:01Speaker 9: this Colorado Cup. Anyway, we're sitting around and we're all like,
- 38:05Speaker 9: you know, we're all still in the game. And doing this,
- 38:06Speaker 9: doing that, and it's a why and I have no idea,
- 38:10Speaker 9: I honestly, you know, I honestly don't. And you know
- 38:13Speaker 9: you've picked your break. We've all thought about it, and
- 38:17Speaker 9: you know, it's just like it's one of these things.
- 38:19Speaker 9: But I'm very proud to have had that opportunity in Hartford.
- 38:24Speaker 9: And it's almost like a cult atmosphere. There's still there's
- 38:28Speaker 9: still a reunion which I haven't got back to in
- 38:30Speaker 9: the summer. Not reunion, it's just kind of a weekend
- 38:34Speaker 9: that the guys go back. I haven't made it yet,
- 38:37Speaker 9: but I'm planning on doing that and looking forward to
- 38:40Speaker 9: seeing the guys again. But yeah, I still get mail
- 38:44Speaker 9: all the time from Booster Club people and what have you.
- 38:49Speaker 9: So it's it's it's a pretty cool, pretty cool thing
- 38:52Speaker 9: for all of us.
- 38:53Speaker 5: That's the best jersey.
- 38:54Speaker 3: That's the best jersey, the Harford Whalers jersey and hands down,
- 38:57Speaker 3: so so clean looking. You you joined, you joined San
- 39:01Speaker 3: Jose for the first two seasons at the Cow Palace,
- 39:04Speaker 3: and then you go to the Stars for their first
- 39:06Speaker 3: two seasons in Dallas. What was your favorite story about
- 39:10Speaker 3: being part of those new franchises.
- 39:12Speaker 8: Well, it certainly wasn't Wins and Santos.
- 39:14Speaker 10: I'll tell you that we had we had such I
- 39:18Speaker 10: mean at that time when the expansion was going on,
- 39:21Speaker 10: like we were truly misfits, right, I mean we were
- 39:24Speaker 10: all you know, there.
- 39:25Speaker 9: Was some you know, Doug Wilson and Kelly Kissio, we
- 39:27Speaker 9: had some some really good players, but a lot of
- 39:29Speaker 9: us were just.
- 39:32Speaker 8: I can I swear on here?
- 39:34Speaker 5: Of course, yes, absolutely, we.
- 39:36Speaker 9: Were all just shiit diggers is what I what I call, right,
- 39:38Speaker 9: It says fourth line guys, gritty guys. We played hard
- 39:42Speaker 9: every night, but but we just struggled to win hockey games.
- 39:46Speaker 9: But we had a really close group. I've stayed in
- 39:48Speaker 9: contact with a lot of those guys too. But it
- 39:50Speaker 9: was exciting. We played the cow Palace and what a
- 39:53Speaker 9: great atmosphere that was, and starting the franchise, so that
- 39:58Speaker 9: was really cool. And then when I got to Dallas,
- 40:00Speaker 9: Dallas was you know, many just come down to Dallas.
- 40:03Speaker 9: We had an established team, Mike Madonno, we're real good.
- 40:07Speaker 9: We beat Saint Louis in the first round. We swept
- 40:11Speaker 9: them my first year, and then we lost to Vancouver
- 40:15Speaker 9: who went on and lost in the Cup final. So
- 40:19Speaker 9: great memories, and people have asked, I'm sure asked all
- 40:23Speaker 9: us ex players, what was your favorite place to coach,
- 40:27Speaker 9: or to play or whatever. I don't have one, I
- 40:30Speaker 9: truly don't. I dive into every community that I go to.
- 40:34Speaker 9: I try to take in all the local everything, and
- 40:38Speaker 9: I just have a really positive attitude and regardless of
- 40:41Speaker 9: how long you're there, I don't have a favorite place.
- 40:45Speaker 9: I loved each and every one of them because it's
- 40:47Speaker 9: just what an opportunity we have to be in the
- 40:50Speaker 9: National Hockey League or even anywhere playing hockey in the
- 40:55Speaker 9: American League. I mean to make a living playing hockey.
- 40:58Speaker 9: My gosh, there's millions and millions of kids around the
- 41:01Speaker 9: world that would give anything to do it.
- 41:03Speaker 8: You know, we've done h well.
- 41:05Speaker 1: So by the way, Kelly kiss you all time, great
- 41:08Speaker 1: name in hockey annals, the pride of Red Deer love.
- 41:10Speaker 2: Kelly kiss you.
- 41:11Speaker 8: Yeah, kiss is great.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Your coach, macklam cel Brady coach double HF World Championships
- 41:15Speaker 1: last summer. Put him with Sidney Crosby goes on to
- 41:18Speaker 1: have a historic season right after that.
- 41:20Speaker 2: Could you then tell what he was capable of?
- 41:24Speaker 8: Well, clearly, I said his career off like I had
- 41:29Speaker 8: the wherewith.
- 41:30Speaker 9: All the intelligence and all that to put him with
- 41:33Speaker 9: Sidney Crosby or or I went to sid and when
- 41:38Speaker 9: he got there and said who do you want to
- 41:40Speaker 9: play with?
- 41:41Speaker 8: And he said, I want.
- 41:44Speaker 9: To play with Celebrini And I was I was shocked,
- 41:48Speaker 9: Like I thought, you know, we had Nate McKinnon coming over,
- 41:51Speaker 9: we had Connectney, We've got we've got like special players,
- 41:56Speaker 9: you know, Horvat And he said, no, I want to
- 41:58Speaker 9: play with him.
- 41:59Speaker 8: And you know what, they're so similar on off the ice.
- 42:05Speaker 9: Their body types, their their their asses are.
- 42:08Speaker 8: Like that big.
- 42:09Speaker 9: Their their legs they're that big like and they skate
- 42:13Speaker 9: the same, they compete the same. They have the same
- 42:17Speaker 9: fresh attitude, positive attitude in practice around their teammates, always smiling.
- 42:24Speaker 9: So I think for him, I think it did help
- 42:27Speaker 9: to watch and to be around sid and watch his
- 42:31Speaker 9: the preparation.
- 42:33Speaker 8: That those special players go through.
- 42:36Speaker 9: I mean every NHL, obviously player goes through a special
- 42:39Speaker 9: preparation and their routine and and all that kind of stuff.
- 42:43Speaker 9: But the guy like that, like those two guys now
- 42:47Speaker 9: are Sydney watching him. It was absolutely incredible to watch
- 42:50Speaker 9: his process of getting ready to play a hockey game,
- 42:54Speaker 9: not just on game days but on off days as well.
- 42:58Speaker 5: It's pretty incredible.
- 42:59Speaker 3: I mean hearing it from you and and and hearing
- 43:01Speaker 3: Sid say I want to play with Maclin Celebrinia is
- 43:04Speaker 3: uh just goes to tell you everything. You know, another
- 43:07Speaker 3: player Hall of Fame player you got to coach was
- 43:10Speaker 3: Marc Andre Fleury and you got to you know, Yeah,
- 43:13Speaker 3: I'm sure you have a ton of stories about the
- 43:15Speaker 3: flowers or anything you can you can share with us
- 43:18Speaker 3: about Mark Andre Fleury.
- 43:20Speaker 9: He is the nicest man in the world, like I
- 43:23Speaker 9: swear to God, like I swear he is the nicest
- 43:26Speaker 9: guy ever. He is so funny, like he he all
- 43:30Speaker 9: his practical jokes and stuff, but he is so fiery,
- 43:34Speaker 9: like if if if there's a competition in practice, or
- 43:38Speaker 9: if you score on him a couple of times, like
- 43:40Speaker 9: he'll he gets.
- 43:41Speaker 8: Really pissed off.
- 43:43Speaker 9: But it's but it's in a really great way, like
- 43:46Speaker 9: it's in it's in a team way, like he just
- 43:48Speaker 9: wants to make the team better. And every opportunity that
- 43:53Speaker 9: I had to go to him and say, you know,
- 43:55Speaker 9: can you go tonight or what do you want to do,
- 43:57Speaker 9: it wouldn't be I want this, I want that I
- 44:00Speaker 9: want that he goes whatever it takes, whatever whatever you
- 44:03Speaker 9: guys think is best for the team, That's what I'm
- 44:06Speaker 9: going to do. And obviously Billy Garran had a relationship
- 44:10Speaker 9: with him. He played with him in Pittsburgh, so he
- 44:13Speaker 9: knew his leadership qualities as well as his ability to
- 44:18Speaker 9: clearly stop the puck. But he was he was just
- 44:22Speaker 9: a pleasure, pleasure to coach.
- 44:24Speaker 1: Yeah, that's very cool. The World Championship flowers curtain calls.
- 44:27Speaker 1: I was right in to see as well. Twenty ten
- 44:29Speaker 1: coach HBO's Road to the Winter Classic, you're famously catting
- 44:32Speaker 1: the mic as an assistant coach, the capitols yell at
- 44:35Speaker 1: your players to grab your fucking sack. What was the
- 44:38Speaker 1: response like from the team and your family when that
- 44:40Speaker 1: air at HBO.
- 44:42Speaker 8: Well, I'll tell you.
- 44:44Speaker 9: I got to Milwaukee as assistant coach, and the owner
- 44:47Speaker 9: picked me up there, and he picks me up at
- 44:49Speaker 9: the airport and he goes, I got something to play
- 44:51Speaker 9: for it. He plays my whole speech driving me to
- 44:55Speaker 9: the hotel when I'm like and a lot of people
- 44:59Speaker 9: have referenced that over the years. Listen, we were all
- 45:03Speaker 9: frustrated and Bruce Boudreau was the coach at the time,
- 45:06Speaker 9: and I was I was really hot because we were
- 45:08Speaker 9: getting we were getting thumped and guys are taking shots
- 45:11Speaker 9: at us, and OVI had to fight, and and I'm like,
- 45:15Speaker 9: why is Ovechkin fighting?
- 45:16Speaker 8: You know?
- 45:17Speaker 9: I that just really pissed me off more than anything.
- 45:20Speaker 9: So I was losing in the coach's room and Bruce
- 45:23Speaker 9: just said, Deane, whann you go in there and talk
- 45:25Speaker 9: to them, and I again, I've got a bit of
- 45:28Speaker 9: fire in my belly, and I lost it a little bit.
- 45:31Speaker 8: But the guys responded.
- 45:33Speaker 9: I mean, we didn't we didn't win the game, but
- 45:34Speaker 9: we we were competitive.
- 45:36Speaker 8: We competed hard after and you know, sometimes you got
- 45:41Speaker 8: to do that.
- 45:41Speaker 9: Sometimes you got to call the guys out on stuff
- 45:44Speaker 9: like that because I think it.
- 45:46Speaker 8: You know, the game's changed a little bit.
- 45:48Speaker 9: Like back in the day, if a coach would have
- 45:50Speaker 9: went in there and when I played, there would be
- 45:53Speaker 9: a bench clearing brawl, Like we wouldn't even take in
- 45:54Speaker 9: our sticks out. It would have just just skate on
- 45:57Speaker 9: the ice and we just started all fighting. But it's
- 45:59Speaker 9: different now. But but yeah, I mean it, uh, it happens.
- 46:04Speaker 9: It happens, And but I don't know. Yeah, my family
- 46:08Speaker 9: loves it and my my my mom in particular.
- 46:11Speaker 5: So.
- 46:15Speaker 3: Dean, you know, with the playoffs going on right now,
- 46:17Speaker 3: is besides the Minnesota Dallas series, is there another series
- 46:21Speaker 3: you're closely watching? And I have to ask, we've seen
- 46:24Speaker 3: a lot of coaches on the panel lately. Are you
- 46:27Speaker 3: would you would you consider getting on TV and and
- 46:31Speaker 3: giving everyone your analysis?
- 46:32Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 46:32Speaker 9: You know what. I actually last time I got let go,
- 46:35Speaker 9: Ray actually reached out to me. Ray Ferro did, and
- 46:38Speaker 9: I just said, I just I don't I don't want
- 46:40Speaker 9: to do that yet. I I don't know. It's just
- 46:43Speaker 9: kind of I don't know. I yes, yes, and no,
- 46:48Speaker 9: Like listen, I I would, I would do it.
- 46:51Speaker 8: It's it wouldn't be my cup of tea.
- 46:53Speaker 9: But god, you know, if there's an opportunity and and
- 46:57Speaker 9: you know, if you can keep your face out there,
- 46:59Speaker 9: like these things are good to do, obviously, I believe
- 47:03Speaker 9: because you keep your name out there and and people
- 47:06Speaker 9: can see that you still want to coach and whatever,
- 47:08Speaker 9: and so so that's that's a good thing.
- 47:11Speaker 8: And yeah, and I watched Butch last night on the.
- 47:15Speaker 9: Panel too, and so yeah, I'm gathering all that kind
- 47:19Speaker 9: of information. So I'd never say never to anything like that,
- 47:25Speaker 9: But at this time, I I want to concentrate on
- 47:28Speaker 9: on getting better as a coach and not that maybe
- 47:31Speaker 9: maybe that would help too, right, because but as far
- 47:34Speaker 9: as watching other games, mate, I'm watching them all like
- 47:38Speaker 9: and then like as it as it goes on, then
- 47:41Speaker 9: you start really diving into you know, like like when
- 47:44Speaker 9: I got Lego last time, it was it was like
- 47:46Speaker 9: Florida Panthers, right, I mean, it's like we we want
- 47:49Speaker 9: to play like them, right, I mean, so now Colorado's
- 47:53Speaker 9: the top team, but there's so many teams that are
- 47:56Speaker 9: playing so well now. So it's just it's fun to watch.
- 48:01Speaker 9: The problem is I don't get to watch it as
- 48:03Speaker 9: a fan. And that's the Olympics World Junior. I can
- 48:10Speaker 9: sit and I can watch. I don't see systems. I
- 48:12Speaker 9: don't see the neutral zone or the p case. I
- 48:16Speaker 9: just watch it for for the passion and you know,
- 48:18Speaker 9: as a Canadian and and what have you.
- 48:20Speaker 8: And but as when.
- 48:22Speaker 9: I'm watching NHL games, I'm constantly going, but why do
- 48:25Speaker 9: they do that in the dizel? Like why would they
- 48:27Speaker 9: set up like that on the face off in the
- 48:29Speaker 9: offensive zone of the defensive zoner, you know, watching the
- 48:33Speaker 9: neutral zones or watching how they're breaking.
- 48:36Speaker 8: Out all that kind of stuff.
- 48:39Speaker 9: So but I guess that's why we do what we do,
- 48:42Speaker 9: and hopefully it makes me a better coach.
- 48:44Speaker 2: As I said earlier, one hundred percent.
- 48:46Speaker 1: Last one for you, coach Flame Flat of course, the
- 48:48Speaker 1: home of Bobby Clark, the famous Philadelphia Flyer, And you
- 48:51Speaker 1: mentioned the fact you coach Travis Connecty this Flyers team
- 48:54Speaker 1: right now because a three to zero on Pittsburgh almost
- 48:55Speaker 1: bringing out the broom.
- 48:56Speaker 2: Its Pittsburgh's now back in that series.
- 48:58Speaker 1: But I do think Ring Pockets done a great job,
- 49:00Speaker 1: the defensive system, the structure in which they played.
- 49:03Speaker 2: What do you make of that series? At the Flowers
- 49:04Speaker 2: win in six?
- 49:05Speaker 1: But I didn't expect a three zero Flowers in and
- 49:08Speaker 1: expect Pittsburgh to be back in this thing?
- 49:09Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 49:10Speaker 8: Well? First off, Bobby Clark and I were born in
- 49:12Speaker 8: the same hospital.
- 49:13Speaker 5: Nice.
- 49:14Speaker 9: Oh wow, you know how I know that there's only
- 49:16Speaker 9: one There's only one, there's only one hospital. But yeah,
- 49:23Speaker 9: I mean I was a Philadelphia fan growing up my
- 49:26Speaker 9: whole life because of Bobby Clark, right, I mean, we're
- 49:29Speaker 9: both from and I've met him over the years, and
- 49:32Speaker 9: you know, I'm not friends with him or anything, but
- 49:34Speaker 9: he used to have a cottage where I had a
- 49:36Speaker 9: cottage in Manitoba and anyway, long story, but so I
- 49:40Speaker 9: absolutely loved, you know, seventy two series, you know, the
- 49:45Speaker 9: slash and all that good stuff. And actually, when I
- 49:48Speaker 9: got fired, I watched every single game in the seventy
- 49:50Speaker 9: two series Rotter Canada.
- 49:52Speaker 8: It was. It was It's humble.
- 49:54Speaker 9: If you ever get a chance to go back, yeah,
- 49:55Speaker 9: it's absolutely incredible, incredible hockey. But anyway, yeah, I've you know,
- 50:02Speaker 9: connect me, I've I've got a special spot for him.
- 50:04Speaker 9: He's just a competitive bugger boy's I loved coaching him
- 50:09Speaker 9: at the World Championships. I would have him on my
- 50:13Speaker 9: team any day. Sandheim too was there. But yeah, the
- 50:17Speaker 9: Talk has done an incredible job. He is such a
- 50:20Speaker 9: gritty guy obviously, but I think he's fair, I think
- 50:24Speaker 9: he's knowledgeable, and yeah, he's done a fantastic job.
- 50:28Speaker 8: That's a that's a great series to watch.
- 50:30Speaker 9: The rivalry obviously, and the intensity level. So yeah, I
- 50:35Speaker 9: I've watched every single game of that series so far.
- 50:39Speaker 2: Well, great stuff.
- 50:40Speaker 1: Dean Evison again a terrific coach, an excellent player, and
- 50:42Speaker 1: he'll be coaching again sooner rather than later. And you're
- 50:44Speaker 1: right about broadcasting. Listen, you're smart, your funny should be
- 50:47Speaker 1: good at it. But it's harder than you think, coach.
- 50:48Speaker 1: If you're not ready to dive in just yet, I think,
- 50:50Speaker 1: enjoy the derby, enjoy watching the hockey with your phone
- 50:53Speaker 1: making notes, and we'll see on the sideline soon.
- 50:55Speaker 2: Thanks so much.
- 50:56Speaker 8: Yeah, I have way too many marbles in my most
- 50:58Speaker 8: to the medium.
- 50:59Speaker 5: Thanks coach.
- 51:01Speaker 8: I appreciate it.
- 51:12Speaker 2: All right.
- 51:12Speaker 1: Thanks to Tine Evison once again, Cinophon and sixty. Take
- 51:14Speaker 1: a look at the new documentary. It is called Lourene
- 51:17Speaker 1: by Morgan Neville, about the SNL creator Lorne Michaels. So
- 51:21Speaker 1: I really enjoyed this documentary. Lord's a fascinating guy. Gotta
- 51:24Speaker 1: be honest, fellows, I don't think i've watched started it live,
- 51:26Speaker 1: probably twenty years. They always say, if you have somebody,
- 51:28Speaker 1: what's your favorite era of SNL. They'll often point at
- 51:31Speaker 1: the time that they were in high school. So if
- 51:32Speaker 1: you ask me my favorite SNL, I'd say, oh, Sandler Farley,
- 51:35Speaker 1: the great Phil Hartman, great Canadian, I know that era.
- 51:38Speaker 1: I really love the most JD. I'm sure for you
- 51:40Speaker 1: might be a little bit different, be a will feral
- 51:41Speaker 1: Arab started a lot different.
- 51:43Speaker 4: Farley the Farley era.
- 51:45Speaker 1: He're with me, Farley Sandley not to me. The early
- 51:48Speaker 1: nineties is like the greatest SNL.
- 51:50Speaker 6: Yeah, we watched like the we watched like the the
- 51:53Speaker 6: greatest of Like, yeah, stuff. My wife Jill loves it,
- 51:57Speaker 6: so she.
- 51:57Speaker 2: Must love sketch comedy.
- 51:59Speaker 3: We just haven't playing in the background and Norm McDonald
- 52:02Speaker 3: two right, using.
- 52:02Speaker 1: That Norm mcdonoughy connecting edible, which the documentary just point
- 52:05Speaker 1: out when Norm got fired because donal Omar was.
- 52:07Speaker 2: The NBC executive he was very tight with O. J.
- 52:09Speaker 1: Simpsons, and Norm kept making OJ jokes and Omar's like, hey,
- 52:12Speaker 1: knock it off.
- 52:12Speaker 2: He's like, well no, like it's funny and it's legit.
- 52:14Speaker 2: He's like, if you do what more time, you gonna
- 52:16Speaker 2: get fired.
- 52:16Speaker 1: And Norman didn't care, and he got fired, which was
- 52:17Speaker 1: unfortunate because I'm with you, Norman was an absolute legend.
- 52:20Speaker 2: But Lord's an interesting guy because, as Adam Sandler.
- 52:22Speaker 1: Says in the documentary, goes you don't know much about him,
- 52:24Speaker 1: like he's the guy who runs this in al but
- 52:25Speaker 1: every time you hear about him, he's like, this mysterious,
- 52:27Speaker 1: enimonic figure, doesn't seem like he lasts much, doesn't think
- 52:30Speaker 1: he has much of a sense of humor.
- 52:31Speaker 2: And Sailor's like, no, he's funny. He's like, if you
- 52:33Speaker 2: get him going, Lord Michaels is obviously funny. But Mike
- 52:37Speaker 2: Myers put in a good way.
- 52:38Speaker 1: He said, he's the kind of guy you know when
- 52:40Speaker 1: they ask him what's funny, He's like, well, it's like pornography.
- 52:42Speaker 1: It's hard to describe, but you know when you see it.
- 52:44Speaker 1: But think of JD his eye for talent, like Lord Michael's.
- 52:47Speaker 1: At one point says he goes, how many truly funny
- 52:49Speaker 1: people are there in America?
- 52:50Speaker 2: And he goes again as a Canadian, he goes, how
- 52:51Speaker 2: many in Kennedy goes three.
- 52:52Speaker 1: Hundred, and he goes, So I've got asseminy, who are
- 52:54Speaker 1: the people that can do this and do it to
- 52:55Speaker 1: a high level. So I do think his success rates
- 52:58Speaker 1: incredible for plucking talent finding them. I will say this,
- 53:00Speaker 1: the documentary missed one major issue which has always been
- 53:03Speaker 1: my contenttion which I want to ask Lord Michaels, if
- 53:05Speaker 1: I made a document you This is the one question
- 53:07Speaker 1: I'd ask him.
- 53:08Speaker 2: As brilliant as guys.
- 53:09Speaker 1: You are as rich as you are, fifty years of
- 53:11Speaker 1: SNL incredible, You've watched so many crews in comedy? How
- 53:14Speaker 1: did you miss on Jim Carrey? Like, how did you
- 53:17Speaker 1: not Jim Carrey, probably the funniest guy in has thirty years? Like,
- 53:21Speaker 1: how did you not snatch him up? Shocking to me?
- 53:25Speaker 6: That's a good point idea, But how how many guys, yes,
- 53:29Speaker 6: weren't on that show that? Yeah, I mean Jim Carrey
- 53:31Speaker 6: went in living color.
- 53:32Speaker 2: And was right, but he was there for the taking.
- 53:34Speaker 6: You could have plucked him like a living color Yeah,
- 53:37Speaker 6: but I wasn't in living color.
- 53:39Speaker 4: Great too, But that's the thing.
- 53:40Speaker 1: It worked out for all sizes, living color, Jim Carrey,
- 53:43Speaker 1: commercial Bill. But to your point, miss Shane Gillis got
- 53:50Speaker 1: fired from SNL.
- 53:52Speaker 2: He made him and.
- 53:53Speaker 1: Then then he came back, and then somebody asked somebody asked
- 53:55Speaker 1: Laurd about that. He's like, oh, you know, I didn't
- 53:57Speaker 1: fire him, and he's really popular. They're like, dude, Lauren
- 53:59Speaker 1: doesn't care. He's all about the popularity the show. Because
- 54:02Speaker 1: at one point he was like, can we get Michael
- 54:03Speaker 1: Vick like what I convictly killed? He said, well, you know,
- 54:05Speaker 1: if he's funny, we'll get him on the show. We'll
- 54:07Speaker 1: figure it out, all right. We talked about Canes Flyers
- 54:09Speaker 1: Carolina Friss fifteen points out of Philly in the regular season,
- 54:12Speaker 1: twelve more regulation wins, so it'll be challenged for Philly.
- 54:14Speaker 1: But Mike Johnson was fired up on HL tonight. I'm curious,
- 54:17Speaker 1: but your guys thoughts on this. NHL Awards Tuesdays saw
- 54:20Speaker 1: Connor McDavid, Nikita Kuchdruff and McLean Celebrainiy named finalists for
- 54:23Speaker 1: the Ted Lindsay Award for most.
- 54:24Speaker 2: Destanding Players voted by the Players Association.
- 54:27Speaker 1: Wednesday he saw Elios Arroken, Jeremy Swaman, Andre Vassilaski finals
- 54:30Speaker 1: for the Vest Trophy. We'ld love to see Vladar get
- 54:33Speaker 1: some lobbies third and goals against. But Jadi back to
- 54:35Speaker 1: Johnny's point, and I asked him about this yesterday the office.
- 54:38Speaker 1: He goes, how is the best player hockey this show?
- 54:41Speaker 1: How is Nate McKinnon not up for the Ted Lindsay?
- 54:43Speaker 1: He goes, if you're talking the heart, I can make
- 54:45Speaker 1: that case.
- 54:46Speaker 2: Celebraty was so valuable to his.
- 54:47Speaker 1: Team, but Nathan McKinnon not being up for the lindsay
- 54:50Speaker 1: the best player on the best team, which at one
- 54:51Speaker 1: point was on historic face to him, he said it
- 54:53Speaker 1: was criminal.
- 54:54Speaker 2: How do you see it?
- 54:56Speaker 5: Hi?
- 54:57Speaker 6: Yeah, listen the players have spoken, Yeah, and they and
- 55:01Speaker 6: I think the impressiveness of mclan Celebratia David. Listen, Nathan
- 55:05Speaker 6: McKinnon isn't that good of a hockey player?
- 55:09Speaker 4: Listen the guys could you know?
- 55:11Speaker 6: I think maybe the guys in my head why I
- 55:15Speaker 6: maybe wouldn't put Nate is like, and I still think
- 55:19Speaker 6: you got to put Nate. It's just tough, like you're
- 55:22Speaker 6: I think you gotta put him over Macklin. But what
- 55:24Speaker 6: Macklin does on the defensive side, I mean he's better
- 55:27Speaker 6: defensively than Nathan mckiddon, I think, and and the way
- 55:31Speaker 6: he plays hard, Like I just I Nate's got kale
- 55:35Speaker 6: And sometimes they think that people go, well, Nate's got
- 55:38Speaker 6: kill mccarr so, you know, or Marty Nachis so it
- 55:41Speaker 6: doesn't really matter like Macklin had nobody. Nikita Kutrov, you know,
- 55:45Speaker 6: is a winger. And then Connoric David's CONNORC. David I
- 55:48Speaker 6: think when you play Conorc David, you just feel it.
- 55:50Speaker 6: Nate's an interesting one because if you were to tell me,
- 55:53Speaker 6: who do you want to play against one on one
- 55:55Speaker 6: over those four guys, So Macklin, Nikita, Connor, I'd take
- 55:59Speaker 6: Nate because I know I know what Nate's gonna do.
- 56:04Speaker 6: Just if I can beat him to it, I can
- 56:06Speaker 6: probably close them out. Not to say that Nate's not creative,
- 56:09Speaker 6: It's just that Nate is in his positions are is
- 56:13Speaker 6: one of the best players in the league, but he's
- 56:16Speaker 6: got to be in that position he isn't really you
- 56:18Speaker 6: don't see a ton of It's that drive wide, it's
- 56:21Speaker 6: that fast crossovers, explosiveness, and he'll beat you wide. He's
- 56:24Speaker 6: beat me wide before. But you kind of know what's
- 56:27Speaker 6: coming and you can kind of prepare for it. Those
- 56:29Speaker 6: other three guys a lot more deceptive in the way,
- 56:32Speaker 6: and they kind of they're cutbacks the way they move
- 56:36Speaker 6: in and out of traffic. So to me, I'm it's
- 56:39Speaker 6: and this is just me trying to fucking explain it
- 56:41Speaker 6: through the lens of the other guys. I don't know
- 56:43Speaker 6: why they didn't take Nate, but I'm just trying to
- 56:45Speaker 6: figure out a way why they wouldn't do it, and
- 56:47Speaker 6: that would be maybe my reason.
- 56:49Speaker 3: I mean, the only reason I can think of is
- 56:51Speaker 3: the players look at it as all right, well, like
- 56:54Speaker 3: you said, I mean those those three Niki, Koutrov, Celebrini
- 56:58Speaker 3: and McDavid compared to what Nate McKinnon has on his team,
- 57:03Speaker 3: I think they the players looking at and saying, Okay,
- 57:05Speaker 3: he's got you know, Brock Nelson, Cadre, all these guys.
- 57:09Speaker 3: He's got so many good players around him. And and
- 57:12Speaker 3: I'm not taking anything away from Nate McKinnon. Nate McKinnon
- 57:14Speaker 3: is one of the best players in the world. But
- 57:15Speaker 3: I also think that and I think you'd agree JD,
- 57:18Speaker 3: that Maclin Celebrini is a better all around player than
- 57:22Speaker 3: already than Nate McKinnon. He really he's you know he is,
- 57:27Speaker 3: and I think that that's what he plays.
- 57:32Speaker 2: Well, you're saying, you.
- 57:33Speaker 1: Know, he's just left coffs you Kni'd quit the hell
- 57:35Speaker 1: kut of coffidence that by the way, continuing.
- 57:38Speaker 3: No, I was just saying, I think he's he's one
- 57:40Speaker 3: of the best all around players in the world now.
- 57:41Speaker 3: And and I that's where I think the players are
- 57:44Speaker 3: coming from I think they see it as Nate's got
- 57:47Speaker 3: more help than those three guys, and they're like, those
- 57:49Speaker 3: are the three best players. And I think that's that's
- 57:51Speaker 3: that's my take on where the players see it.
- 57:53Speaker 1: I think, all right, last time we got a good
- 57:55Speaker 1: flowers and nails lung Quist so much respect Skate playing
- 57:58Speaker 1: to the face courtesy a while Ford. Michael McCarron forced
- 58:01Speaker 1: to leave game four Saturday night miss game five is
- 58:03Speaker 1: expected playing game. Didn't even have to go to the
- 58:06Speaker 1: hospital after sting. It looked like a horrible cut again
- 58:09Speaker 1: to his face. So he comes back face shield. But
- 58:11Speaker 1: this is why, whether you're Jason de Murzer or Nate Thompson,
- 58:13Speaker 1: toughest guys in the world. First I had you, of course,
- 58:16Speaker 1: Clinton LARCHU remember the horrible incidant you got the juggle
- 58:19Speaker 1: that was close. I mean this was I mean you
- 58:21Speaker 1: hear Skate in the facial area. Horrifying scenes, dude.
- 58:24Speaker 6: I saw it from They had the camera from the
- 58:26Speaker 6: boards facing like so it was like a close up
- 58:30Speaker 6: of like the fate hitting it and it was like
- 58:33Speaker 6: heel and then across and I was like, missed the eye.
- 58:38Speaker 6: It's probably broke some bones because it looked like a
- 58:40Speaker 6: heel caught him hard. I mean, that's Shit's scary, man,
- 58:44Speaker 6: That that is just you know, as soon as I
- 58:46Speaker 6: saw it, I was sick to my stomach. I got
- 58:47Speaker 6: my wrist cut, and it was still a traumatizing experience.
- 58:53Speaker 6: So I'm like to me, the face, your neck so close,
- 58:56Speaker 6: like just the the absolute Yeah, just prayers up for
- 59:00Speaker 6: him and all that, because that was fucking that was bad.
- 59:03Speaker 4: Man.
- 59:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 59:04Speaker 3: I don't have much to add on this except yeah,
- 59:06Speaker 3: it's it's just I mean, I've heard a couple on
- 59:09Speaker 3: the calf slice I mean that, I mean, but anything
- 59:12Speaker 3: near the face or necker, and it's just it's scary.
- 59:15Speaker 3: So somebody's okay, all.
- 59:17Speaker 2: Right, We'll try to end in a lighter note.
- 59:19Speaker 1: Jason Nevers has been quite a run of Angel Tonight
- 59:21Speaker 1: late shifts, and I think the most memorable moment, along
- 59:23Speaker 1: with his analysis and certainly one liners, was your.
- 59:26Speaker 2: Homage to Tony Luffman.
- 59:27Speaker 1: You wore a yellow tie, which was charring to see,
- 59:30Speaker 1: especially when I'm shaking the sleeping in my eyes at
- 59:32Speaker 1: seven am, but you explained it by say, well, this
- 59:34Speaker 1: is an honor of Tony Luffpin. I feel a little
- 59:36Speaker 1: wild and crazy like Tony.
- 59:38Speaker 2: What was the reaction you got. Listen, you're a dapper guy,
- 59:40Speaker 2: you're in case, but a yellow fucking tie. What were
- 59:42Speaker 2: you thinking?
- 59:43Speaker 4: Well? I had his.
- 59:44Speaker 6: I had his Lake Placid pin on too, from the
- 59:47Speaker 6: Olympics because we made a bet. We made a bet
- 59:49Speaker 6: in the Olympics in Canada and the Canada US game,
- 59:52Speaker 6: and I said, if Canada loses, I'll wear Tony Luffman tied.
- 59:55Speaker 6: And sure, I wanted to wear the mustard, the red
- 59:58Speaker 6: shirt and the mustard tie. He brought in the mustard
- 1:00:02Speaker 6: tie and I was like, I never got more texts
- 1:00:05Speaker 6: from people that like. I was like, nobody watches you
- 1:00:08Speaker 6: know this show, this show that like guys that I
- 1:00:11Speaker 6: played with.
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: I had like two guys like, what the fuck were
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: you wearing?
- 1:00:16Speaker 6: Rescue. I was like, dude, I lost the bet. I
- 1:00:18Speaker 6: tried to say it right when we came on air.
- 1:00:20Speaker 6: I was like, I lost the bet, a huge bet.
- 1:00:23Speaker 6: But it was right man.
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: But that's but to your point, you clarified it right
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: out of the get and explain it. Hey, I'm wearing
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: this pin.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: I'm feeling like, but you're right, the average guy, if
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: you're just flipping challenge.
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: What what's this guy wearing yellow tie? That context? If
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: you're blinking, you miss otherwise you go watch this guy
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: wearing a yellow tie. What's going on with Jason?
- 1:00:40Speaker 5: It's either a yellow tire, it's that red tie for
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: Tony and one of the two.
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: It's that dark red one too, and I might I
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: might have to bust that one out tomorrow night. Maybe
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: I'm gonna wear the red tomorrow night for sure, for sure. Now, yeah,
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: I remember we lose a game when I was at Tampa.
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: We lost eight one in Boston and Stevie why pulled
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: me in. Teddy pursl beside the bus, grabbed Teddy and goes,
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: I know we just lost eight one, but Teddy, don't
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: ever fucking wear that tie again. And then we jumped
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: on the bus trying not to laugh while putting our
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: heads down. Teddy had the worst tie. But just to
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: your point, bad tie, it's great.
- 1:01:19Speaker 6: It was like the Kenny Rogers roasters so bright on TV.
