Q1 2026 Review: Germany's Startup Selection Event · Blockchain Germany – Web3 Startups, Crypto Innovation & Venture Capital by Startuprad.io™

• 0:00
Speaker0: Let me give you three numbers. One hundred and eighty nine billion dollars.
• 0:06
Speaker0: That's how much was invested into startups globally in February 2026 loan.
• 0:11
Speaker0: It's the largest single month of startup funding ever recorded.
• 0:16
Speaker0: Eighty three percent. That's a share of capital that went to just three companies,
• 0:21
  Speaker0: OpenAI, Anthropic and Waymo.
• 0:24
Speaker0: Three companies, 83% of all the money.
• 0:28
Speaker0: 2.7 billion. That's how much Munich raised in startup funding last year,
• 0:34
Speaker0: overtaking Berlin for the first time in the history of the German startup ecosystems.
• 0:39
Speaker0: Those numbers tell a story, and the story is not what most people think it is.
• 0:45
  Speaker0: Welcome to StartupRate.io Quarterly Review for Q1 2026.
• 0:50
Speaker0: I'm Joe from StartupRate.io. This is the episode where we step back from the
• 0:56
Speaker0: headlines and ask, what's actually changing?
• 0:59
Speaker0: Every quarter, we track hundreds of signals across the German and European startup
• 1:05
Speaker0: ecosystem, funding rounds, policy shifts, exit, and talent moves.
• 1:11
Speaker0: This quarter alone, we analyze nearly 400 of them, and then we filter for what
• 1:17
Speaker0: actually changes the game. Today, I'm going to walk you through the three that matter most.
• 1:24
Speaker0: Not news, but dealists, signals, the structural shifts that will define the next 12 months.
• 1:31
Speaker0: Signal one, capital is not disappearing, it's concentrating,
• 1:36
Speaker0: and the filter it's using is not what founders expect.
• 1:42
Speaker0: Signal number two, Germany's startup geography is breaking apart.
• 1:48
Speaker0: Bavaria is overtaking Berlin and it's not because of the craft beer.
• 1:54
Speaker0: Signal 3. The exit window is reopening, but it's only opening for a very specific
• 2:00
Speaker0: type of company. Let's get into it.
• 2:25
Speaker0: Signal one, capital is concentrating, not disappearing.
• 2:30
Speaker0: What happened? The funding winter narrative is lazy and mostly wrong.
• 2:35
Speaker0: German startups raised 80.4 billion euros in venture capital in all of 2025,
• 2:43
Speaker0: a 19% increase over the year before and the third highest figure in the history of the ecosystem.
• 2:50
Speaker0: And Q1 2026 has continued that momentum in just the first two months of a $1.2
• 2:59
Speaker0: billion float into the German startups across 63 rounds.
• 3:05
  Speaker0: Look at the names.
• 3:06
  Speaker0: Palua, a Berlin-based AI company, raised $350 million at a $3 billion valuation.
• 3:15
Speaker0: Neura Robotics in Metzingen is raising roughly 1 billion euros,
• 3:19
Speaker0: backed by Tether at $4 billion valuation.
• 3:23
Speaker0: Orsapiens in Mannheim hit unicorn status with a $100 million C-series led by
• 3:30
  Speaker0: a BlackRock-Temasek joint venture.
• 3:33
Speaker0: ESA Aerospace just close to 150 million euros at a 2.2 billion valuation.
• 3:40
Speaker0: Desiro, an observability platform out of Solingen, rich unicorn status with
• 3:45
  Speaker0: 110 million dollar series B.
• 3:49
Speaker0: So money is flowing. But here's the thing. Why it's happening structurally.
• 3:55
Speaker0: 716 deals in 2025, down 5% from the year before.
• 4:00
Speaker0: So you have more capital going into few companies. This is not a recovery.
• 4:06
Speaker0: This is a selection filter.
• 4:08
Speaker0: Three structural forces are driving this.
• 4:12
Speaker0: First, capital efficiency expectations have changed.
• 4:16
Speaker0: Funds are no longer underwriting potential. They are underwriting inevitability.
• 4:22
Speaker0: The area of a bet on the TAM is over LP1.
• 4:27
Speaker0: Fewer, bigger, more defensible bets.
• 4:33
Speaker0: Second, AI has created a new category of companies that looks like infrastructure, not startups.
• 4:40
Speaker0: And infrastructure always attracts institutional capital.
• 4:45
Speaker0: Nscale just raised $2 billion backed by NVIDIA.
• 4:49
Speaker0: Palo has round tripled its valuation in eight months. These are not seed stage bets.
• 4:54
Speaker0: These are capital deployment events. Third, the mega-deals are eating the ecosystem globally.
• 5:01
Speaker0: February 2026 alone saw $189 billion deployed and 83% of that went into just three companies.
• 5:11
Speaker0: That's not a market, that's a power law on steroids. What changes next?
• 5:18
Speaker0: We are now in a barrel market. On the one side, companies that are clearly mission
• 5:24
Speaker0: critical, like AI infrastructure, defense tech, regulatory compliance software,
• 5:29
Speaker0: they get funded at scale repeatedly.
• 5:33
Speaker0: On the other side, everything else, and everything else is struggling disproportionately.
• 5:40
Speaker0: For German startups especially, this means the mega deal count matters more than the deal count.
• 5:47
Speaker0: Germany had 18 rounds above 100 million euros in 2026, six more than the year
• 5:53
Speaker0: before. That's where the growth is.
• 5:56
Speaker0: If you're not in that tier, the funding environment has not improved for you at all.
• 6:03
Speaker0: Let me say that again because it's important. The headlines say recovery.
• 6:08
  Speaker0: The reality says selection.
• 6:12
Speaker0: What people are getting wrong. And here's where most founders get it wrong.
• 6:17
Speaker0: They think the answer is to become more efficient, to cut burn, to extend runway.
• 6:23
Speaker0: But efficiency is not a deciding factor right now.
• 6:27
  Speaker0: Perceived necessity is.
• 6:30
Speaker0: The filter the market is applying is simple. Is your company disappeared tomorrow? Would it matter?
• 6:37
Speaker0: Not would people miss the product? Would the absence create a structural problem
• 6:41
Speaker0: for someone's business? That's the bar, and it's a very different bar than product market fit.
• 6:48
Speaker0: If I were a founder right now, I would aggressively reposition towards must
• 6:53
Speaker0: have, even if it means narrowing the narrative.
• 6:57
Speaker0: Because the market is not rewarding breadth, it's rewarding perceived indispensability.
• 7:06
Speaker0: Signal two, geography. Germany's startup geography is breaking apart.
• 7:12
Speaker0: What happened? For the first time in the history of the German startup ecosystem,
• 7:17
Speaker0: Bavaria has overtaken Berlin as the leading startup funding destination.
• 7:23
Speaker0: Munich attracted 2.7 billion euros in 2025, Berlin 2.4.
• 7:29
Speaker0: Bavaria now has over 4,400 active startups and scale-ups. Munich alone contains
• 7:36
Speaker0: nearly 2,500 of them, and the density startups per capita now matches Berlin.
• 7:42
Speaker0: This is not a one-quarter anomaly. The data from Sifted from the Varian startup
• 7:48
Speaker0: and scale-up monitor from our own signal base, all of it points in the same direction.
• 7:54
Speaker0: Germany is not decentralizing, it's specializing, and that's a completely different
• 7:59
Speaker0: dynamic. Why it's happening structurally?
• 8:03
Speaker0: The conventional explanation is Munich has good universities and big corporates.
• 8:08
  Speaker0: That's always been true.
• 8:10
Speaker0: It doesn't explain why the shift happened now.
• 8:13
Speaker0: What changed is the sector mix of where capital is going.
• 8:17
Speaker0: The sectors attracting largest rounds right now are defense technology,
• 8:23
Speaker0: robotics, space, deep tech, and industrial AI.
• 8:26
Speaker0: All of these sectors have one thing in common. They require proximity to engineering,
• 8:32
Speaker0: to manufacturing, to hardware infrastructure, to government procurement pipelines.
• 8:37
Speaker0: That is Munich. That is Bavaria. Look at evidence from this quarter alone.
• 8:42
Speaker0: Helsing, an AI defense company based in Munich, raised 600 million euros and
• 8:47
Speaker0: now has Bundestag-approved procurement contracts worth 268 million euros for strike drones.
• 8:56
Speaker0: The Bundestag approved 540 million euros specifically for combat drones from
• 9:02
  Speaker0: Helsing and Stock Defense.
• 9:04
Speaker0: Quantum Systems, also Munich area, secured 150 million euros in institutional
• 9:10
Speaker0: financing from the European Investment Bank, KFW and Deutsche Bank.
• 9:15
Speaker0: ESA Aerospace, Munich, 250 million euros for its Spectrum rockets.
• 9:20
Speaker0: Rubco, Munich, 100 million dollars for modular industrial automation.
• 9:25
Speaker0: Neuro Robotics in Metzing, Baden-Württemberg, not Berlin either.
• 9:31
Speaker0: And Agile Robots also Munich just partnered with Google DeepMind to integrate
• 9:35
Speaker0: Gemini into industrial robotic systems.
• 9:39
Speaker0: Berlin is still strong in fintech and consumer software, but capital-heavy sectors,
• 9:45
Speaker0: the ones raising 100 million plus, are overwhelmingly in the south of Germany.
• 9:51
Speaker0: What changes next? Germany is developing a dual-center startup economy.
• 9:57
Speaker0: Berlin remains the center of software for international talent pipelines for
• 10:01
  Speaker0: consumer-facing companies.
• 10:04
Speaker0: Munich and southern Germany are becoming the center of hardware-adjacent AI
• 10:09
Speaker0: for defense, for space, for industrial automation.
• 10:13
  Speaker0: This has real implications.
• 10:16
Speaker0: Policy, funding programs, talent flow. The KFW deployed 748 million euros to VC funds in 2025.
• 10:26
Speaker0: The state of Bavaria committed 400 million for just Proxima Fusions demonstration reactor.
• 10:34
Speaker0: Those are real estate level industrial bets, not startup brands.
• 10:39
Speaker0: And some players are doubling down. Google just opened its new AI center in
• 10:44
Speaker0: Berlin as part of a 5.5 billion euro Germany commitment. but the Bundestags
• 10:49
Speaker0: defense procurement contract are going to Munich companies.
• 10:52
Speaker0: The infrastructure is splitting by function.
• 10:56
Speaker0: What people are getting wrong. The misread here is thinking this is rivalry.
• 11:02
Speaker0: It's not just Berlin versus Munich. That's the sports narrative.
• 11:07
Speaker0: What's actually happening is functional specialization. The same thing that
• 11:12
Speaker0: happened in the US between Silicon Valley and New York, between the Bay Area and Boston.
• 11:20
Speaker0: The risk is not that one city wins and the other loses.
• 11:23
Speaker0: The risk is that the ecosystem fragments into two worlds that stop talking to each other.
• 11:29
Speaker0: Berlin's companies don't attend Munich defense tech events. Munich founders
• 11:33
Speaker0: don't pitch at Berlin SaaS meetups.
• 11:36
Speaker0: The network diverges. And there's a talent signal buried in the data that matters.
• 11:41
Speaker0: Only 46% of Munich startups use English as their primary working language versus
• 11:47
Speaker0: 67 in Berlin. If Munich wants to compete globally, that gap is a structural vulnerability.
• 11:54
Speaker0: And here's one signal that tells you where the smart money thinks this is going.
• 11:59
Speaker0: Julian Teicher, the former WeFox founder, and Jürgen Müller,
• 12:03
Speaker0: the former SAP CDO, just joined forces to build Agent F, an AI-native ERP system.
• 12:11
Speaker0: Two of the most experienced operators in the German startup ecosystem are betting
• 12:15
Speaker0: their next decade on industrial AI infrastructure.
• 12:19
Speaker0: That's not a trend. That may be a verdict.
• 12:22
Speaker0: If I were Munich-based founder, I would lean into the industrial advantage but
• 12:28
  Speaker0: aggressively internationalize the team.
• 12:30
Speaker0: The companies that win with the next decade will combine German engineering
• 12:34
Speaker0: debt with global first operations.
• 12:38
Speaker0: That combination barely exists today.
• 12:43
Speaker0: Signal 3. The exit window is reopening, but not for everyone.
• 12:48
Speaker0: What happened? After two years of essentially closed IPO markets,
• 12:53
Speaker0: 2026 is shaping up to be the year the window reopens.
• 12:57
Speaker0: SpaceX is reportedly preparing for an IPO filing that could value the company at $1.5 trillion.
• 13:05
Speaker0: OpenAI is targeting a listing by end of 2026 with a valuation that has already crossed $500 billion.
• 13:13
Speaker0: Anthropic, probably at $350 billion after its latest round, is being traded
• 13:18
Speaker0: as one of the hottest IPO candidates.
• 13:21
Speaker0: This course has filed a confidential IPO application.
• 13:25
Speaker0: Close at home, Bitpanda, the WNR-based crypto and investment platform,
• 13:30
Speaker0: is advancing plans for a Frankfurt IPO at a 4 to 5 billion euro valuation with
• 13:36
Speaker0: Goldman Sachs, Citi and Deutsche Bank leading.
• 13:38
Speaker0: And on the M&H side, the activity has been significant this quarter.
• 13:44
Speaker0: Google acquired WIS, the cloud security platform.
• 13:47
Speaker0: IBM acquired CoFluent, the data streaming company.
• 13:51
Speaker0: Amazon acquired River, a Zurich-based robotics startup, an ETH spin-out for
• 13:57
  Speaker0: approximately $100 million.
• 13:59
Speaker0: Uber is in advanced talks to acquire Blacklane, a building-based premium chauffeur service.
• 14:05
Speaker0: Benning Spoon, a quite attractive, an Austrian Pet Tech Scala,
• 14:10
Speaker0: potentially the largest exit in Austrian startup history, and Swart Health,
• 14:16
Speaker0: a quite higher health, a Berlin health tech startup for $285 million.
• 14:21
Speaker0: That's a lot of movement. So the question becomes, why now?
• 14:27
Speaker0: Why it's happening structurally. Three forces are converging to open this window.
• 14:33
Speaker0: First, LP pressure for distributions. Venture funds raised enormous amounts between 2020 and 2022.
• 14:41
Speaker0: And the investors, the limited partners, need to see returns.
• 14:45
Speaker0: Not markups and paper, actual liquidity events. IPOs and acquisitions are the
• 14:51
Speaker0: only way to deliver that.
• 14:53
Speaker0: Second, the IPO infrastructure itself improved. EY reported that 1,259 companies
• 15:00
Speaker0: went public globally in 2025,
• 15:03
Speaker0: up 2% with an issuance volume rising 32% to over $163 billion.
• 15:11
Speaker0: The market has proven it can absorb new listings again.
• 15:15
Speaker0: Third, the strategic acquirers are back. Big tech is buying again.
• 15:20
Speaker0: Amazon, Google, IBM, Uber, They are not just investing, they are acquiring,
• 15:27
Speaker0: and they are specifically targeting companies that fill capability gaps in AI,
• 15:33
Speaker0: robotics, cloud security, and enterprise data.
• 15:37
Speaker0: What changes next? The exit window is opening, but it's a filtered window.
• 15:42
Speaker0: The IPOs that are moving forward share three characteristics.
• 15:48
Speaker0: 1. Proven unit economics or at a minimum a clear path to profitability.
• 15:55
Speaker0: OpenAI is repositioning ChatGPT as a productivity tool. That's a profitability narrative. 2.
• 16:03
Speaker0: Category dominance. SpaceX owns the commercial launch market with defined cloud security.
• 16:10
Speaker0: These are not companies competing for market share. They are the market. 3.
• 16:16
  Speaker0: Strategic inevitability.
• 16:18
  Speaker0: Bitpanda's Frankfurt listing isn't just a fundraising event,
• 16:21
Speaker0: it's a statement about European Capital Markets infrastructure.
• 16:26
Speaker0: If you don't meet at least two of these three criteria, the window is technically
• 16:30
Speaker0: open but functionally closed for you. What people are getting wrong?
• 16:35
Speaker0: The misread is thinking the next exit window is reopening for the ecosystem broadly.
• 16:41
Speaker0: It's not. It's reopening for companies that have already won.
• 16:46
Speaker0: There's a massive overhang of companies that raised in 2021 valuations,
• 16:52
Speaker0: never grew into them, and now are stuck.
• 16:55
Speaker0: They can't IPO at a down round. They can't get acquired at a price their investors will accept.
• 17:02
  Speaker0: Their invalidation purgatory.
• 17:05
Speaker0: Meanwhile, look at what OpenAI just did. They shut down Zora,
• 17:10
  Speaker0: their customer video product.
• 17:11
  Speaker0: They canceled a billion-dollar Disney partnership.
• 17:14
Speaker0: They're redirecting everything towards enterprise and B2B.
• 17:18
Speaker0: That's a company actively reshaping its narrative to match what the IPO market wants to buy.
• 17:24
Speaker0: The buy-in tech founders are stepping down is the same pattern.
• 17:28
Speaker0: The company is entering its execution phase. The market wants operators now, not visionaries.
• 17:34
Speaker0: If I were a founder preparing for an exit, I would stop optimizing the product
• 17:39
Speaker0: and start optimizing the narrative because the market doesn't buy companies.
• 17:44
Speaker0: It buys stories about inevitability, and the story has to match the moment.
• 17:49
Speaker0: So, let me pull these three signals together.
• 17:55
Speaker0: Signal 1. Capital is concentrating into fewer, bigger bets.
• 17:59
Speaker0: The filter is perceived necessity, not efficiency. Signal 2.
• 18:04
Speaker0: Germany's startup geography is splitting by function, meaning for hardware,
• 18:08
Speaker0: defense, and deep tech, building for software and international talent.
• 18:12
Speaker0: Signal 3. The exit window is reopening, but only for companies that have already
• 18:17
Speaker0: won their category. Now, here's the synthesis, the thread connecting all three.
• 18:24
Speaker0: What we're seeing across all three signals is the same underlying force the
• 18:29
Speaker0: market is shifting from potential to proof.
• 18:31
Speaker0: In the funding market, proof of necessity.
• 18:34
Speaker0: In the geographic shift, proof of industrial capability.
• 18:39
Speaker0: In the exit market, proof of category dominance.
• 18:44
Speaker0: The area of exiting narrative plus large CAM equals funding is structurally
• 18:51
Speaker0: over. What replaces it is demonstrated in dispensability.
• 18:56
Speaker0: And that changes the playbook. For founders, stop telling the market what it could become.
• 19:02
Speaker0: Show what breaks without you.
• 19:05
Speaker0: For investors, returns are concentrating in companies that look boring from
• 19:10
Speaker0: the outside, but are structurally irreplaceable from the inside.
• 19:15
Speaker0: For the German ecosystem, the strength is real. 8.4 billion euros,
• 19:22
Speaker0: new unicorns, defense procurement, space launchers, fusion reactors.
• 19:27
Speaker0: But the window to convert that strength into global positioning is narrow,
• 19:32
Speaker0: and it requires a level of ambition that this ecosystem has historically been uncomfortable with.
• 19:41
  Speaker0: That's what I see in Q1 2026. Not a funding winter, not a recovery, a selection event.
• 19:48
Speaker0: And the companies that understand that distinction are the ones that will define
• 19:54
Speaker0: the next cycle. Thank you for listening to Startup Radio.
• 19:57
Speaker0: If this helped you to see the market more clearly, send it to one founder who
• 20:01
Speaker0: is still operating on 2021 assumptions.
• 20:05
Speaker0: They need to hear this. I'm Joe from Startup Radio. I'll see you in the next quarter.
• 20:14
Speaker0: That's all, folks. Find more news, streams, events, and interviews.
