- 3:58Speaker 3: We really have a good time.
- 4:00Speaker 3: You can find us lots of different posts.
- 4:04Speaker 3: This is a group of podcasts, a podcast group consisting of myself, tiny we got Supernash that will join us for time to time CT, and then also Whiskey and Roxy my wife Tonight, roxy is Curtis.
- 4:20Speaker 3: She has very, very.
- 4:23Speaker 3: What's the word?
- 4:25Speaker 3: Graciously poured the blind tasting Because we are going to be doing a blind tasting.
- 4:31Speaker 3: The cool thing about it is on this particular blind tasting is I wanted to do this because I've been reading.
- 4:38Speaker 3: I've been reading so much on social media because it's just like all you see is traveler whiskey, which is a whiskey, not a bourbon that buffalo trace has released and it is readily available on the shelves.
- 4:55Speaker 3: You can get as much as you want and it's $39.99.
- 4:59Speaker 3: So it's a new buffalo trace, a product bring exactly what everybody has been complaining, that the opposite of what they've been complaining about.
- 5:11Speaker 3: They have produced enough for everybody to have some and the reviews are not even mixed.
- 5:19Speaker 3: It's like they're coming in and people rip the living crap out of it and it's like almost a buffalo trace experiment, because Sazerac has always heard crying babies of just crying that there's not enough.
- 5:35Speaker 3: There's not enough low special reserve, we can't get it.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Where's not enough?
- 5:39Speaker 3: 107.
- 5:39Speaker 3: I don't want to wait in line, I want to walk in and be able to get it.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Well, now you can walk in and get it, and you don't want it, and so this is something that I wanted to do.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Tonight I've got this bottle of traveler.
- 5:51Speaker 3: We did a.
- 5:52Speaker 3: We did a.
- 5:53Speaker 3: You can go back and listen to me and Supernash's podcast Last week, I believe Tuesday.
- 5:58Speaker 3: It's three, three, four podcasts for check that out.
- 6:02Speaker 3: But we gave it a high rating.
- 6:05Speaker 3: I think this is a very good whiskey.
- 6:07Speaker 3: I love the taste of it.
- 6:09Speaker 3: I'm not somebody who thinks 90 proof is a low proof whiskey or or or a low proof beverage.
- 6:17Speaker 3: There are the people that have high proofs and you know so.
- 6:20Speaker 3: But what we're doing tonight is we're going to be blind tasting traveler whiskey, which is traveler whiskey, is Harlin Wheatley.
- 6:32Speaker 3: He put his name on it.
- 6:34Speaker 3: It's.
- 6:35Speaker 3: The only other thing he has his name on is a vodka.
- 6:38Speaker 3: So it's his first whiskey.
- 6:39Speaker 3: He's put his name on all the other whiskeys Elmer tea Lee oh, my gosh.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Elmer tea Lee Uh, he's Taylor.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Um, you know.
- 6:50Speaker 3: George T Stagg.
- 6:51Speaker 3: They all are former distillers.
- 6:53Speaker 3: This is his first whiskey to put his name on and I would say that he's probably pretty proud of it.
- 6:59Speaker 3: They chose whiskey from 50 different batches him, and then Chris Stapleton, who has 2.1 million followers on Facebook and he's a country singer that has great songs.
- 7:15Speaker 3: I'm a fan.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Sings songs about whiskey and his fans are gonna be part of who wants to buy this, but there's gonna be enough for him.
- 7:24Speaker 3: So what I wanted to do is put this blind up against.
- 7:29Speaker 3: First Buffalo Trace.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Everybody is always looking for Buffalo Trace.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Buffalo Trace isn't as unobtainable as the rest, but it's still allocated and when it comes out it usually doesn't stay on the shelf.
- 7:44Speaker 3: You gotta be in line or get lucky to get it.
- 7:48Speaker 3: So there's Buffalo Trace.
- 7:49Speaker 3: Then we got Weller Special Reserve.
- 7:51Speaker 3: It's a Buffalo Trace runs at about $32.99, where Weller Special Reserve goes out at $24.99.
- 8:01Speaker 3: And this is the lowest end Weller product that they produce.
- 8:04Speaker 3: They produce it at 90%, 90 proof and it's a 90 proofer, just like the traveler.
- 8:12Speaker 3: And in my opinion, I'm not a huge fan of Weller Special Reserve.
- 8:18Speaker 3: I don't drink a lot of it.
- 8:19Speaker 3: I love Weller 107.
- 8:22Speaker 3: I love full proof.
- 8:23Speaker 3: I love the Weller brand.
- 8:24Speaker 3: It's not like I don't like it, but it's not one of my favorites.
- 8:28Speaker 3: It's on the level of small batches.
- 8:32Speaker 3: When you get small batches, I Elijah Craig's small batch.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Those entry level bourbons are okay, but there's so much more out there that I've just never been a huge fan of Special Reserve.
- 8:47Speaker 3: I didn't understand why anybody would pay $125, which is the going rate secondary for a bottle that is 24.99 and used to be, like six months ago, 22.99 MSRP.
- 9:00Speaker 3: So we got that and then I wanted to put it up against one of the premier sought after bottles, one of the bottles I started out with, and that's the Colonel EH Taylor small batch.
- 9:12Speaker 3: I like the small batch.
- 9:14Speaker 3: This is one of the nice small batches that are there.
- 9:18Speaker 3: So when you're thinking about what it is, what these are, these three people go crazy over the Buffalo Trace, the Weller Special Reserve and the EH Taylor small batch.
- 9:32Speaker 3: They go nuts and they're searching, they complain they can't get it, they're irritated, they're mad, they're angry.
- 9:39Speaker 3: That's what all they do is complain about not being able to get it.
- 9:41Speaker 3: And it's a huge day when you pick up a Weller Special Reserve, which is the green label and you paid 125 for it and you think you just got a deal of the century.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Now Roxy has poured all four in front of me, blind.
- 9:59Speaker 3: I have no idea what they are.
- 10:01Speaker 3: I don't want to try and identify what they are in the glass.
- 10:06Speaker 3: I don't at all.
- 10:07Speaker 3: I think I probably could do all right, but when it comes to this taste test, I want to taste the best tasting one, the one I like the most.
- 10:20Speaker 3: This is why I want to do it blind.
- 10:22Speaker 3: I have no idea what's in front of me and I'm very excited, excited, to do it.
- 10:28Speaker 3: I've got four Scotchy Bourbon Boy, glen Cairns in front of me.
- 10:32Speaker 3: I've got the four bottles beside me.
- 10:35Speaker 3: I will taste through them once.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Then I will start to rearrange them.
- 10:40Speaker 3: I will arrange them left to right, left and your right, one, two, three, four.
- 10:47Speaker 3: So I'm about to go start off with your guys.
- 10:51Speaker 3: I believe this is your guys right.
- 10:53Speaker 3: I'm grabbing that glass.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Yep, it's to the right for my left, your right, and here we go.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Who the hell is paying 124?
- 11:02Speaker 3: All right, so that is what any market that doesn't get, weller Special Reserve those basically are $125.
- 11:12Speaker 3: That's how much they pay.
- 11:13Speaker 3: That's how much they can move them for If you go down south into any liquor store.
- 11:19Speaker 3: A lot of like.
- 11:19Speaker 3: I've seen them for 125.
- 11:21Speaker 3: I've seen them for 145.
- 11:23Speaker 3: It's right there.
- 11:24Speaker 3: So people here up in Ohio, we see it at MSRP all the time.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Nobody's doing that.
- 11:31Speaker 3: But when you're talking about Wisconsin, new York, certain parts of the don't get it regularly.
- 11:38Speaker 3: They are playing, they are paying, that, yes, and their desperate role is not high.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Yes, walker, it's just.
- 11:46Speaker 3: But you know it's like come to Ohio and be able to experience it.
- 11:50Speaker 3: But still, here we go.
- 11:52Speaker 3: This is the first one.
- 11:53Speaker 3: Nose, definitely Parmel.
- 11:59Speaker 3: All right, here we go.
- 12:02Speaker 2: I like that nose.
- 12:04Speaker 3: This is a bourbon I love.
- 12:05Speaker 3: I can tell you.
- 12:06Speaker 3: I don't know if it's a bourbon, but it's definitely something I love.
- 12:10Speaker 3: There we go.
- 13:01Speaker 3: That's the first one.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Crap on a caramel but, there's a good amount of oak and a little bit of almost a grapey note.
- 13:12Speaker 3: All right, we're gonna go take a little sip.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 13:18Speaker 3: A lot more higher proof Now the tailor is a hundred proof.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 13:27Speaker 3: That one is a little bit, I think I know.
- 13:38Speaker 3: Okay, if I have to go between the two, I'm so All right, here we go on the next one.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Let me get this one here.
- 13:49Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 13:51Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 13:52Speaker 3: All right, that one's a little.
- 14:02Speaker 3: That's so far.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Little char, not as good.
- 14:07Speaker 3: There's not as much sweetness.
- 14:08Speaker 3: All right, and this last one that's I know which ones.
- 14:15Speaker 3: I'm ready.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Wow lots of sweetness on that one.
- 14:26Speaker 3: All right, this one is eliminated, so it goes to four right there.
- 14:33Speaker 3: So now we're down to those.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Oh, these three right here.
- 14:38Speaker 3: And right now I'm gonna say I'm gonna try it again, I'm trying it again.
- 14:43Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 15:05Speaker 2: All right.
- 15:15Speaker 3: All right.
- 15:16Speaker 3: So there's the order, except for the last two.
- 15:18Speaker 3: We got red and yellow.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Now they're different in two ways.
- 15:26Speaker 3: A little bit more sweetness on the right.
- 15:30Speaker 3: All right, I'm gonna analyze these two.
- 15:32Speaker 3: I've got these two out and I can't.
- 15:36Speaker 3: We're gonna go in order because if I look I can't tell which one.
- 15:40Speaker 3: I could find out what the other one was and I'm not gonna do that.
- 15:43Speaker 3: I know what order that is, because that's four, three.
- 15:47Speaker 3: We're gonna try and do this one more time.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Let's try this one first and that one on the back.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Okay.
- 16:03Speaker 3: Oh, it's so close.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Whatever those two, I would have to say, I'm gonna say they're really close.
- 16:20Speaker 3: I have to choose to.
- 16:23Speaker 3: I could say they're a tie, but I'm not.
- 16:25Speaker 3: I'm gonna say, whichever one I pick, each one's every bit as good as the other.
- 16:31Speaker 3: It's just a personal preference.
- 16:33Speaker 3: Do you like caramel with a little bit of proof and a little bit of oak, or do you like a little bit more the oak?
- 16:42Speaker 3: Or do you like?
- 16:43Speaker 3: Do you like a sweeter bourbon?
- 16:55Speaker 3: That one sweeter the one on there?
- 16:57Speaker 3: All right, I gotta go with they're equally the same.
- 17:03Speaker 3: So, whatever I pick, I'm gonna say but I'm gonna switch it around because I'm gonna go with the one on the left because it's sweeter.
- 17:09Speaker 3: The finish is sweeter.
- 17:10Speaker 3: Let me see, I really like them both, all right.
- 17:20Speaker 3: So this is where I always get F'd.
- 17:24Speaker 3: So I'm gonna show what we got blue or green, blue, so greens last, blues second last, red and yellows first.
- 17:44Speaker 3: So I am going to reserve.
- 17:47Speaker 3: Talk about what well or green is.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 17:52Speaker 3: It is red.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Well, our special reserve is red.
- 17:58Speaker 3: I picked well or special reserve as number two in a blind test.
- 18:04Speaker 3: I'm telling you this is, this is a blind test.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Now I'm scared.
- 18:11Speaker 3: I'm scared because I always do stuff like this.
- 18:14Speaker 3: All right, blue is Buffalo Trace, so Buffalo Trace comes in third place.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Weller special reserve, red right, second place.
- 18:36Speaker 3: So now we're down to.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Did I put so?
- 18:41Speaker 3: Traveler is wait, hold on, buffalo Trace was blue and blue was here, so is that blue?
- 18:58Speaker 3: or is this blue?
- 18:59Speaker 3: This is blue.
- 19:01Speaker 3: So blue green.
- 19:03Speaker 3: There we go.
- 19:08Speaker 3: So Buffalo Trace, blue.
- 19:12Speaker 3: All right, we got to see which ones, which?
- 19:17Speaker 3: All right, it's obvious.
- 19:20Speaker 3: So blue, so Buffalo Trace.
- 19:22Speaker 3: So we got green and whatever.
- 19:24Speaker 3: Okay, so here we go.
- 19:25Speaker 3: So right now we've got last place of Buffalo Trace.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Let me just make sure it doesn't end due when it comes to light or brightness.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Yeah, and then, all right, we're going to do what is Taylor in first or third?
- 19:43Speaker 3: Here we go, folks Green.
- 19:47Speaker 3: Taylor is in third.
- 19:51Speaker 3: So there you go, folks Blind.
- 19:56Speaker 3: I picked Traveller as number one.
- 20:02Speaker 3: I definitely like weeded bourbons, but I picked Traveller out of the three, out of the four.
- 20:12Speaker 3: And so it's crazy Traveller, weller, special Reserve, taylor, Buffalo Trace.
- 20:21Speaker 3: I'm good, everybody, just so you know, I love them all.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Not one of them is bad.
- 20:27Speaker 3: But based off of this tasting blind Traveller picked, I picked Traveller over.
- 20:34Speaker 3: Now, traveller was really close to Weller Special Reserve.
- 20:37Speaker 3: But how does Taylor fall back onto?
- 20:41Speaker 3: I'm just talking about flavor.
- 20:43Speaker 3: It's big, it's bold, it's what?
- 20:45Speaker 3: What?
- 20:46Speaker 3: Not Totally, totally.
- 20:48Speaker 3: The fact that I was able to, I mean, it's crazy.
- 20:53Speaker 3: So, based off the blind test, buffalo Trace itself was in fourth place.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Eh, taylor was in third place, weller Special Reserve, which I am not a huge fan of compared to other Wellers.
- 21:09Speaker 3: I might have to put this up against.
- 21:10Speaker 3: The Wellers Agree to very much disagree.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Good luck with all your future endeavors.
- 21:16Speaker 3: So you know, dan, what I want to say to you is I'm just doing this because you got the marketing.
- 21:24Speaker 3: You've got all this stuff.
- 21:26Speaker 3: They've given us a good whiskey and I wanted to put it up against them.
- 21:31Speaker 3: I understand you agree to disagree because everybody's palates are different, but what I'm saying is is this is in the same ballpark as all the Buffalo Trace products and that you just can't rip on something because you can get it.
- 21:48Speaker 3: We all love to.
- 21:51Speaker 3: Hey, eric, it's good to see you, I'm glad that you're watching.
- 21:55Speaker 3: But you all got to understand it's like the generation, my generation and the generation right in front of me and behind me, no one will be can't have.
- 22:08Speaker 3: And so these bottles here, the other bottles going up against traveler, the difference is is everybody can't have them.
- 22:15Speaker 3: And now that certain people want them most, I think most could replicate this.
- 22:20Speaker 3: But let they need.
- 22:22Speaker 3: What they need to do is blind it, to take out the bias.
- 22:25Speaker 3: And exactly because the bias is, you can get it, and if you can get it, it's shit.
- 22:30Speaker 3: That's, that's what they're.
- 22:32Speaker 3: I mean, there are so many bourbons on the shelf that are so good that people will go and pass all of them up to get these bourbons.
- 22:42Speaker 3: The tailor, the Weller special reserve, the Buffalo Trace, the Weller 107, but there's good bourbons on the shelf, but that's.
- 22:49Speaker 3: They made enough.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Well, that's why they sit on the shelf, because they can restock the shelf, but people then don't want them.
- 22:57Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, aaron, it is going on the shelf.
- 23:02Speaker 3: They made enough.
- 23:03Speaker 3: It might not be in your area, but it's all, especially through here and blinded it.
- 23:09Speaker 3: To me it's light.
- 23:10Speaker 3: See, once again, it's.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Where do you get Canadian whiskey?
- 23:13Speaker 3: You don't know that?
- 23:15Speaker 3: It's not what, that I don't taste Canadian whiskey, I don't taste light.
- 23:19Speaker 3: 90 proof is fine.
- 23:21Speaker 3: But, I'm not going to say, dan, that I respect your palate.
- 23:25Speaker 3: You have to drink what you want to drink.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Pasting's a personal preference, but when I'm trying to show everybody when I so.
- 23:32Speaker 3: So when you blinded it, dan, what did you blind it up against?
- 23:36Speaker 3: I would like to know with?
- 23:38Speaker 3: Because there's nothing that says it's Canadian whiskey, there's no articles, there's no, nothing Based off of what it says on the back of the bottle.
- 23:48Speaker 3: It comes from Buffalo Trace and Harlan Wheatley's put his name on it.
- 23:52Speaker 3: So I'm going to kind of I understand how they blend there and how Sazerik blends there.
- 23:58Speaker 3: I don't think they're pulling down Canadian whiskey and throwing it in there.
- 24:01Speaker 3: I think it's the used barrels that they used with their bourbon when they didn't have new barrels, and so that's just my opinion.
- 24:09Speaker 3: But none of us know, and that's the thing.
- 24:12Speaker 3: So there you go.
- 24:13Speaker 3: I mean I'm all for he goes.
- 24:21Speaker 3: Are you frozen?
- 24:22Speaker 3: Or maybe cigars and whiskey on an empty stomach, tripping me out?
- 24:26Speaker 3: There you go, eric.
- 24:28Speaker 3: No, I'm talking about all the bias that goes in.
- 24:33Speaker 3: So we did a blind tonight and it's been a very, very fun time and I don't understand what's going on.
- 24:43Speaker 3: I am recording and it's just me.
- 24:47Speaker 3: Usually it gives me the 45 minutes.
- 24:50Speaker 3: But anyways, everybody out there, I got to go down.
- 24:55Speaker 3: I got to go down to yeah, I understand caribou crossing is a sazeret, but it's not being that's not being made and aged at Buffalo Trace where Harlan Wheatley is.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Why, when you have a stock that they have of whiskey and stuff that they put out, why would you ship in and blend from a Canadian distillery?
- 25:24Speaker 3: It just makes no sense.
- 25:25Speaker 3: The whiskey part of it is coming from the fact that they used used barrels where most American whiskey is coming from.
- 25:32Speaker 3: So it's just like yeah, I suppose traveler whiskey.
- 25:36Speaker 3: They didn't say traveler American whiskey.
- 25:39Speaker 3: So you're thinking that some Canadians in there, there's a possibility, but to me I like it.
- 25:45Speaker 3: I blinded it.
- 25:47Speaker 3: I had no idea what I was picking and I put it up against.
- 25:50Speaker 3: And the crazy thing is is one of my favorite bourbons to drink is Taylor Small Batch.
- 25:56Speaker 3: I love Taylor Small Batch, but Taylor Small Batch came in third and Weller Special Reserve beat it, which I would have never, ever, ever, ever thought.
- 26:06Speaker 3: That's the one thing.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Not saying it's Canadian, just similar to me.
- 26:11Speaker 3: Oh yeah, dan, I mean that's what we're here for.
- 26:14Speaker 3: I mean, aren't we all here to drink what we like and talk about it and keep it open.
- 26:19Speaker 3: It's just, I just wanted to put it up.
- 26:22Speaker 3: I did not know I was going to pick it first when I was actually doing the last one before Taylor.
- 26:29Speaker 3: When I picked it I didn't know if it's going to be third or Taylor was going to be first, because I love Taylor.
- 26:33Speaker 3: But you know the one I know, the worst blind I ever did was I put up a.
- 26:40Speaker 3: We did seven makers marks blind and the one I picked, number one and it just I picked makers mark In the blind.
- 26:50Speaker 3: It tasted so carmely it was way above everything else.
