- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch, to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:34Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:36Speaker 1: the party, the bridge getting from one full episode of
- 0:38Speaker 1: Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig into the dirt,
- 0:42Speaker 1: our mission to uncover the truth, to confront the myth,
- 0:45Speaker 1: to reclaim the story. On this bonus episode, we were
- 0:48Speaker 1: talking about this week's full episode subject Nikki six, Part
- 0:52Speaker 1: two of our Motley Crusaga. We're rewinding back to our
- 0:54Speaker 1: Pink Floyd episode, previewing our upcoming episode on Waylon Jennings,
- 0:59Speaker 1: and we get into your voice, smells, text, DMS, and
- 1:01Speaker 1: as always a whole lot of rosie. This is the
- 1:04Speaker 1: podcast for the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent thinkers
- 1:07Speaker 1: who know that the best history is the history that
- 1:09Speaker 1: gets buried. Disgrace Land is where I tell the stories
- 1:12Speaker 1: they didn't want told, the kind you end up telling
- 1:15Speaker 1: to someone else. All right, disc goes, Let's get into it. Oftentimes,
- 1:31Speaker 1: when I'm running a disgrace Land episode, I'm not only
- 1:34Speaker 1: thinking of you guys. I have an image of what
- 1:37Speaker 1: you guys look like. Now. I don't know a lot
- 1:39Speaker 1: of you personally, but some of you I do. Some
- 1:41Speaker 1: of you I've met in person at events. Some of
- 1:45Speaker 1: you are more familiar with from the Patreon connection that
- 1:48Speaker 1: we have in the chat, and of course I get
- 1:51Speaker 1: a sense of who you are what you look like
- 1:53Speaker 1: from our interactions on social. Now some of you are
- 1:57Speaker 1: horn rimmed, glasses wearing librarians, and some of you are
- 2:00Speaker 1: tattooed truck drivers, and some of you are everything in between.
- 2:04Speaker 1: What connects you isn't how you look, of course, whether
- 2:08Speaker 1: that's similar or dissimilar. What connects you is your curiosity. You,
- 2:14Speaker 1: like me, are obsessed. I've been thinking about this a
- 2:17Speaker 1: lot lately. Obsessed with music, Obsessed with great storytelling, Obsessed
- 2:22Speaker 1: with the truth, because the truth is far more interesting
- 2:25Speaker 1: than the basic PR approved or AI generated or basic
- 2:29Speaker 1: AF creator drivel that we're getting in our feeds these days,
- 2:32Speaker 1: being on social or even from the new documentaries and
- 2:37Speaker 1: biopics that we're getting from the streamers. As somebody who
- 2:40Speaker 1: deals pretty much exclusively in music history. This is very
- 2:45Speaker 1: discouraging for me. Okay, there's so much more to these
- 2:50Speaker 1: music history stories. You saw Gimme Shelter, You've seen twenty
- 2:54Speaker 1: four hour party people. You know what great music storytelling is.
- 2:59Speaker 1: You are cooler than your average basic music listener. You
- 3:03Speaker 1: know that most of the stories about the musicians you love,
- 3:05Speaker 1: the ones the algorithm is feeding us, are sanitized spun
- 3:10Speaker 1: quote unquote, safe narratives, cleaned up by some unholy union
- 3:14Speaker 1: of sentimental dramatists and tightly round entertainment lawyers, made for
- 3:18Speaker 1: modern TV, not for mythology. But the truth is that
- 3:21Speaker 1: the myth is way more entertaining than what they're giving us.
- 3:26Speaker 1: These motherfuckers are everywhere too. Okay, the corporate algorithmic studio
- 3:29Speaker 1: storytelling machine my YouTube feed is an abomination of shitty,
- 3:34Speaker 1: wrote creator in AI storytelling. Yes, mister YouTube, I like music, sure,
- 3:40Speaker 1: but I don't need seventeen different avatars trying to explain
- 3:43Speaker 1: to me who the fucking Beatles are. I get it. Okay,
- 3:46Speaker 1: Oh you see me. You say you want to offer
- 3:48Speaker 1: me something, perhaps a bit more niche the reason the
- 3:51Speaker 1: Beetles stop touring. I'm good, dude, I don't need a
- 3:54Speaker 1: million explanation on how the screaming girls were too loud.
- 3:57Speaker 1: If you're not talking about Japanese assassins at Buddha On
- 4:00Speaker 1: trying to take out George and Ringo, I'm clicking next,
- 4:02Speaker 1: and I'm guessing that you are too. The streamers are
- 4:06Speaker 1: even worse because they have the money and the means
- 4:09Speaker 1: to make great content, and what do we get It
- 4:11Speaker 1: ain't good. The documentaries are boring. I know the stories,
- 4:14Speaker 1: I know them as they're unfolding on the screen in
- 4:16Speaker 1: front of me. The biopics, they often leave out the
- 4:18Speaker 1: nasty little bits, and even when the story is bonkers,
- 4:21Speaker 1: they blow it. These days, Chaos on Netflix was a
- 4:24Speaker 1: massive disappointment. Now, I don't blame Errol Mars or Tom O'Neil.
- 4:27Speaker 1: I can tell that the doc was noted to death
- 4:29Speaker 1: by executives. It missed on all the magical storytelling in
- 4:33Speaker 1: the book and definitely could have been made to be
- 4:35Speaker 1: great if the executives get out of the way and
- 4:37Speaker 1: let the storytellers do their thing. I don't know about you, guys,
- 4:40Speaker 1: but the corporate algorithmic studio storytelling machine, this blob that
- 4:45Speaker 1: I'm referring to here that I'm I'm gonna call chasm
- 4:48Speaker 1: all right, c ASSM again, Corporate algorithmic studio storytelling machines
- 4:53Speaker 1: c ASSM. Chasm aka the divide between us and great stories.
- 4:58Speaker 1: See what I did here? This thing, this bob, it's
- 5:01Speaker 1: taking over, okay, and it makes me feel it's freaking alienating, man,
- 5:07Speaker 1: Because because of you, guys, I know there are hundreds
- 5:10Speaker 1: of thousands of people out there who are clamoring for
- 5:13Speaker 1: the true stories from music history. I don't need to
- 5:16Speaker 1: be made to feel by mister chasm here that I'm
- 5:19Speaker 1: alone or that I'm a freak for caring about the
- 5:21Speaker 1: fact that John Lennon was into Barbara Walters and hung
- 5:24Speaker 1: up on Bruce Springsteen. These are the details I want
- 5:27Speaker 1: in my storytelling because like you, I'm curious, Because like you,
- 5:34Speaker 1: I want more interesting stories, because like you, I'm smart
- 5:38Speaker 1: enough to know that the truth is more interesting than
- 5:41Speaker 1: the sanitize. Because like you, I'm cool enough to know
- 5:44Speaker 1: the chasm, the corporate algorithmic studio storytelling machine is the problem,
- 5:48Speaker 1: not me, and that the solution is well better stories
- 5:52Speaker 1: for music history. Anyways. In this case, the stories we
- 5:56Speaker 1: tell to each other every week the stories you not
- 5:59Speaker 1: only want to hear, but that you want to tell
- 6:01Speaker 1: the stories they don't want told. Now all that said,
- 6:06Speaker 1: the trailer for the new Jeff Buckley documentary dropped today
- 6:09Speaker 1: and I am nothing if not hopelessly hopeful. Because the
- 6:12Speaker 1: trailer for It's Never Over Jeff Buckley, directed by Amy Berg,
- 6:16Speaker 1: it looks incredible. I have high hopes hopes that this
- 6:20Speaker 1: film gets to the core of this incredible artist and
- 6:23Speaker 1: delivers storytelling that's worthy of such a legend. Again, I'm hopeful.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Despite my opening rant here, I'm not cynical, Okay. I
- 6:30Speaker 1: watched the trailer for this documentary and I literally got emotional.
- 6:33Speaker 1: I felt something akin to actual loss. I'm not joking.
- 6:35Speaker 1: I didn't know Jeff, but I feel connected to him
- 6:39Speaker 1: for a lot of different reasons. Some of you do too.
- 6:41Speaker 1: I'm sure we discussed these reasons already when we released
- 6:45Speaker 1: our Jeff Buckley episode a couple of years ago or
- 6:47Speaker 1: whatever it was, and you know, some will discuss in
- 6:50Speaker 1: the future once this movie drops, we'll get into all
- 6:52Speaker 1: of it. But the loss of Jeff Buckley was as
- 6:56Speaker 1: tremendous as his explosion was onto the scene, and I
- 6:59Speaker 1: can't wait to get a deeper dive into that whole thing,
- 7:03Speaker 1: into the whole myth of Jeff Buckley with this documentary.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Now on the subject of emotion, Okay, if you were
- 7:12Speaker 1: alive in the nineteen nineties and watched any of the
- 7:15Speaker 1: footage from last weekend's Oasis Manchester gig and didn't get emotional,
- 7:19Speaker 1: then you are dead inside. Somebody call up the fucking
- 7:22Speaker 1: mortician and get them over to your place. These guys legends,
- 7:26Speaker 1: all I know. If you saw these videos like me,
- 7:29Speaker 1: you were just I mean, the fomo you were. If
- 7:33Speaker 1: any of you were there, by all means, call me
- 7:35Speaker 1: up six one, seven nine, six sixty six three eight.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I want to hear about it. But the fomo I
- 7:39Speaker 1: had was unreal. The fucking audience screaming every word to
- 7:43Speaker 1: every song for two hours straight. It's it sealed this
- 7:47Speaker 1: thinking for me that that I've been noodling on the
- 7:49Speaker 1: last couple of weeks. We want connection more than ever.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Modern music, Now, this isn't Grandpa coming at here. This
- 7:57Speaker 1: isn't like old head hardcore guy coming out here. This
- 8:00Speaker 1: isn't this isn't my generation. That's not what this is.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Don't take it that way. Modern music doesn't connect us
- 8:08Speaker 1: the way that artists that we love from the past
- 8:10Speaker 1: connected us. It has nothing to do with taste or
- 8:13Speaker 1: style or who's good or who sucks. We simply just
- 8:17Speaker 1: don't rally around bands and artists now like we did
- 8:22Speaker 1: then when there was a monoculture. When we get to
- 8:26Speaker 1: peek back into what it was like then, when these songs,
- 8:30Speaker 1: when these artists bring us back to that place, like
- 8:33Speaker 1: what Oasis is doing right now, it's hyper intense, hyper emotional.
- 8:40Speaker 1: It's not nostalgia we crave. It's the type of connection
- 8:45Speaker 1: that was once everywhere but has been obliterated by the algorithms. Okay,
- 8:51Speaker 1: that siphon us off into these tidy little niche feeds
- 8:56Speaker 1: where we only connect with those who are exactly the
- 8:58Speaker 1: same as us. I mean, this is why I cover
- 9:01Speaker 1: artists from every genre. This is why I cover artists
- 9:05Speaker 1: that I've not particularly interested in because I'm curious, because
- 9:11Speaker 1: I feel like I'll get into something that will be
- 9:14Speaker 1: interesting and that will in turn help us tap into
- 9:17Speaker 1: something together and will have this other type of connection.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I don't want to be siphoned off into my own
- 9:24Speaker 1: tiny little niche feed. Okay, this connection that we're seeing
- 9:28Speaker 1: at these oasis gigs. This is also why young people
- 9:31Speaker 1: are showing up in droves to these concerts with these
- 9:34Speaker 1: guys who were making music before they were born in
- 9:37Speaker 1: some cases, and it's why oways this is charting again.
- 9:41Speaker 1: This type of connection is like mainlining, a type of
- 9:44Speaker 1: visceral excitement that you know, non millennials, non gen X whatever,
- 9:49Speaker 1: never experienced. It is, as Liam Gallagher wants saying, electric
- 9:55Speaker 1: all right, if you've been listening to me the last
- 9:57Speaker 1: few weeks, then you know I haven't been able to
- 9:59Speaker 1: shut up about Chris Whitaker's We Begin at the end
- 10:02Speaker 1: the book that I was reading. I finished it last
- 10:05Speaker 1: week and before the end I had two audible gasps. Okay,
- 10:11Speaker 1: it shocked me as a reader. It made me feel
- 10:13Speaker 1: like a character in a Smith's song, like an outlaw
- 10:15Speaker 1: from Springsteen's Nebraska. It nearly made me cry, and I
- 10:18Speaker 1: don't cry easily. It's not only one of the best
- 10:20Speaker 1: murder mystery, slash thriller, slash, crime novel, slash whatever the
- 10:24Speaker 1: fuck I've read, It's one of the best books I've
- 10:27Speaker 1: read period. I didn't want it to end. It took
- 10:32Speaker 1: me probably three weeks to read, maybe four I was reading.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I was slow rolling it, man, because I didn't want
- 10:39Speaker 1: it to end. That doesn't happen often. Anyways, I'm done
- 10:42Speaker 1: with it. It's fantastic. You should all read it, and you
- 10:44Speaker 1: should tell me what you think about it. I just
- 10:45Speaker 1: started reading Chuck Hogan's Gangland. By the way, Chuck Hogan
- 10:48Speaker 1: wrote the town that the Ben Affleck movie is based on.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Be done with this book before the end of the week.
- 10:55Speaker 1: I can tell it's going down hard. It's going down fast.
- 10:57Speaker 1: It's like a shot of good Berman after a big
- 10:58Speaker 1: emotional night of Trouma, which was, you know, the Chris
- 11:01Speaker 1: Whitaker book. Hogan's book, on the other hand, straight seventies
- 11:04Speaker 1: mafia perfection. It was an incredible character one that gave
- 11:07Speaker 1: me one of those audible gas I was just talking about,
- 11:09Speaker 1: but just gave it to me two chapters in just
- 11:11Speaker 1: fucking great. Love it. That's Gangland by Chuck Hogan. If
- 11:14Speaker 1: you're interested now what I'm listening to, you'll never believe it.
- 11:18Speaker 1: But I'm listening to Jimmy Buffett. What the hell happened
- 11:21Speaker 1: to your slightly edgy smartess gen X Disgray sand Host
- 11:25Speaker 1: You asked, Well, like you guys, I got curious. Now,
- 11:28Speaker 1: someone one of you, man, I wish I could remember
- 11:30Speaker 1: who so I could thank you. One of you sent
- 11:32Speaker 1: me an email or a text or a DM. I
- 11:34Speaker 1: don't know if we read it here on the show
- 11:36Speaker 1: or whatever, or if I just responded you know wherever
- 11:40Speaker 1: you hit me up. But one of you got in touch,
- 11:42Speaker 1: and you told me that the Jimmy Buffett backstory was
- 11:45Speaker 1: completely contrary to the sort of smiley, blissful, escapist, parrot
- 11:51Speaker 1: head Margueriteville image that I have in my head. And boy,
- 11:55Speaker 1: oh boy, were you right? And bonus the music? Okay, up,
- 12:00Speaker 1: up and until just after the record that Margaritaville is
- 12:04Speaker 1: on the music, Jimmy Buffett's early records pretty damn good.
- 12:07Speaker 1: I mean, I'm into it. I hesitate to say that
- 12:11Speaker 1: I'm having a Jimmy Buffett summer because I'm not. I'm
- 12:15Speaker 1: having a Turnstyle and Keith Jarrett summer. But these records
- 12:19Speaker 1: shocked me with how how much I liked them. Okay,
- 12:22Speaker 1: I'll be done writing this episode. I should say I'm
- 12:26Speaker 1: researching all this for an episode, and I'll be done.
- 12:28Speaker 1: I'm writing it this week. I'll be done, be done
- 12:31Speaker 1: with it this week and it'll be out in a
- 12:32Speaker 1: couple months. And I gotta say I love it when
- 12:34Speaker 1: you guys dig up the dirt for me and point
- 12:36Speaker 1: me in the right direction. So thank you, dig keep digging,
- 12:38Speaker 1: dig Baby dig. I wanted to start a band once
- 12:40Speaker 1: called dream Baby Dream after the suicide song dig Baby
- 12:44Speaker 1: Digg is good though. All right, maybe we can up
- 12:46Speaker 1: with shirts. Let's say dig Baby dig I don't know.
- 12:48Speaker 1: We'll see, all right. If you want more music, Rex,
- 12:51Speaker 1: if you want to know how Marlon Brando influenced the
- 12:53Speaker 1: music that I'm listening to this week and what specific
- 12:55Speaker 1: songs I'm recommending for your July playlist, you gotta listen
- 12:59Speaker 1: to the Hollywood Land Rap Party all right, to his
- 13:02Speaker 1: deth and I get down on our movie inspired musical recommendations.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Trust me that makes sense. Subscribe and listen to Hollywood
- 13:08Speaker 1: Land wherever. Podcasts are available for free. Speaking of I
- 13:12Speaker 1: Don't Know stuff podcasts, podcast episodes, Marlon Brando legend that
- 13:18Speaker 1: he is, other legends, another legend NICKI six. The myth
- 13:22Speaker 1: surrounding Nikki six are episode full episode subject this week.
- 13:26Speaker 1: The myth is that he died and came back to life,
- 13:29Speaker 1: but we reckon with the fact that yes, that's true, man,
- 13:32Speaker 1: that's true. But the real truth is that he actually
- 13:35Speaker 1: died twice and came back to life. If you can
- 13:38Speaker 1: believe that Nicky's story of rock and roll animalism is
- 13:42Speaker 1: so wild that we couldn't even come close to telling
- 13:45Speaker 1: all the dirty details that he gets into in his autobiography,
- 13:49Speaker 1: We couldn't even come close to fitting it into the
- 13:51Speaker 1: full episode this week. But hey, that's what we have
- 13:54Speaker 1: these bonus episodes for. And in the all access section
- 13:57Speaker 1: of this after party, I'm gonna be giving you three
- 13:59Speaker 1: quick stories of Nicki six rock and roll criminality in
- 14:02Speaker 1: debauchery that we're just too damn hot for the wide feed.
- 14:04Speaker 1: You've got to be a member though, to access that content,
- 14:06Speaker 1: but don't sweat it. Becoming a member only costs five
- 14:08Speaker 1: dollars a month, less than a couple of coffee these days.

- 14:16Speaker 1: can sign up directly on Patreon or Apple too, and
- 14:18Speaker 1: that membership it not only gets you the extra content

- 14:36Speaker 1: six madness. Too wild for the full episode sign up,
- 14:38Speaker 1: become a member today disgracelampod dot com slash membership. All right,
- 14:43Speaker 1: coming up after this episode, we are rewinding to our
- 14:45Speaker 1: Pink Floyd story. If you want to know the true
- 14:48Speaker 1: depths and cause of Sid Barrett's madness and hear a
- 14:51Speaker 1: pretty funny story about who's Pete Townsend tripping his balls? Often,
- 14:55Speaker 1: listen to the Pink Floyd episode coming up after this
- 14:58Speaker 1: after Party after Floyd. On Tuesday, we have our new
- 15:02Speaker 1: episode on Wayland Jennings. Now, if you thought Wayland was
- 15:07Speaker 1: messed up, you're gonna want to hear the story about
- 15:10Speaker 1: the lengths Waylon Jennings had to go to to hide
- 15:13Speaker 1: his drugs from his roommate who was even more messed
- 15:16Speaker 1: up than he was. Now that roommate was, of course,
- 15:19Speaker 1: Johnny Cash. And this begs the question that I want
- 15:22Speaker 1: you to be thinking about when you listen to the
- 15:24Speaker 1: Waylon Jennings episode. Next, this question is who was the
- 15:28Speaker 1: most punk rock of the country music singers? All right,
- 15:31Speaker 1: I want to know six one seven, nine oh six, six,
- 15:34Speaker 1: six three eight, voicemail and text. Leave me a voicemail,
- 15:38Speaker 1: send me a text. You might hear your answer played
- 15:40Speaker 1: on next week's after party. Hit me up at disgray
- 15:43Speaker 1: slampod dot com. Surefireway to get me to respond to
- 15:47Speaker 1: you is to respond in the Patreon chat to this
- 15:50Speaker 1: question who was the most punk rock of the country singers?
- 15:54Speaker 1: But of course the old telephone works as well as
- 15:57Speaker 1: do the the apps at sampod on Social disgrace sampod
- 16:01Speaker 1: at gmail dot com. I want to email me, I
- 16:03Speaker 1: gotta take a quick break. Coming up next the music,
- 16:05Speaker 1: the musicians, the crimes, the stories you want to talk
- 16:08Speaker 1: about with your voicemails, text, dms and more. All right,
- 16:36Speaker 1: this goes We're back listen Apple podcast users, you know
- 16:38Speaker 1: the drill. Make sure you get auto downloads turned on
- 16:40Speaker 1: so you don't miss any of our episodes. Uh six
- 16:43Speaker 1: one seven, nine oh six, six six three eight. You
- 16:45Speaker 1: know where I'm at, same place I'm at every week
- 16:47Speaker 1: in the phone booth, the one across the hall, Hanging
- 16:49Speaker 1: on the telephone wait for you to send me a voicemail,
- 16:51Speaker 1: wait for you to send me a text, because you
- 16:53Speaker 1: guys know better than anyone that music history does not
- 16:56Speaker 1: have to be boring. Okay, you get a line on
- 16:58Speaker 1: these insane stories, just like I got a line on
- 17:00Speaker 1: these insane stories. And you dig and you call, and
- 17:02Speaker 1: you dig in U text and you dig in u DM.
- 17:05Speaker 1: All right. Pete Milan, one of our Patreon chat members
- 17:09Speaker 1: hit us up, hit me up over in the Patreon
- 17:11Speaker 1: chat publicly with this incredible story last week about David
- 17:15Speaker 1: Bowie getting banned from SNL, similar to the Replacements last
- 17:20Speaker 1: week's full full episode subject getting banned from SNL, which
- 17:23Speaker 1: I didn't know. I didn't know that about David Bowie
- 17:25Speaker 1: and this was in the eighties I believe it might
- 17:28Speaker 1: have been early nineties. He sent me a link to
- 17:30Speaker 1: the article. Fascinating to me. What's up with Laura Michaels
- 17:34Speaker 1: just like your band, you know what I mean? Like
- 17:38Speaker 1: it just strikes me as it's like the dude, you know,
- 17:44Speaker 1: that fucking kid in your neighborhood who you let play
- 17:47Speaker 1: in the in the football game because he had the
- 17:49Speaker 1: better football, but he's really a pain in the ass.
- 17:52Speaker 1: And something then goes way and he took the fucking
- 17:54Speaker 1: ball home. That's what Laura Michaels reminds me of. Here
- 17:56Speaker 1: with is your band? I mean Elvis Costello? Okay, the replacements?
- 18:01Speaker 1: David Bowie? What are you doing? Man? Who else? We
- 18:06Speaker 1: need a running list of people banned from Saturday Night Live? Anyways?
- 18:09Speaker 1: My point Pete Milan, one of you guys gave me
- 18:12Speaker 1: that stories and I appreciate it. Let's uh, let's get
- 18:15Speaker 1: into some calls here. Six one seven nine oh six
- 18:17Speaker 1: six six three eight. You guys want to call me
- 18:19Speaker 1: with any incredible stories for music history, you can do that.
- 18:22Speaker 1: You can call me. You can answer the question of
- 18:23Speaker 1: the week from last week, which was about no. What
- 18:26Speaker 1: was the question? Oh yeah, which hair metal bands are
- 18:29Speaker 1: are you? Are you most into?
- 18:30Speaker 2: You know?
- 18:30Speaker 1: If which, which is the one the one that especially
- 18:33Speaker 1: if you're not a hair metal person. A lot of
- 18:35Speaker 1: lot of incoming from you guys on wanting to hear
- 18:39Speaker 1: some hair metal episodes. I kind of use this Motley
- 18:43Speaker 1: Cruze Part two Nikki six episode to get a bead
- 18:45Speaker 1: on on who exactly from the hair metal scene you
- 18:48Speaker 1: guys are into. With the question of the week, let's
- 18:50Speaker 1: check out Jim from the three to one eight.
- 18:52Speaker 3: Hey, Jay, this is Jim from the three one eight.
- 18:54Speaker 3: Absolutely love the show Man. Regarding the hair metal question, Yeah,
- 18:59Speaker 3: I was primarily an eighties and nineties college rock, alternative rock,
- 19:02Speaker 3: whatever you want to call it. Guy. Going to high
- 19:05Speaker 3: school in the midle eight eighties, I couldn't avoid hearing
- 19:07Speaker 3: a lot of hair metal, and I liked a lot
- 19:09Speaker 3: of it. Particularly love the band Rats. They just had
- 19:14Speaker 3: a really catchy sound who wrote really memorable songs. They
- 19:17Speaker 3: had an amazing guitar duo with Blake Great, Robin Crosby
- 19:23Speaker 3: and Warren de Martini. A vocalist Stephen Pearcy had a
- 19:26Speaker 3: kind of snotty, semi punk tone to his voice, and
- 19:29Speaker 3: Bobby Blotson was my kind of drummer, just a straight
- 19:32Speaker 3: ahead bachery still knew how to make the song stand out.
- 19:35Speaker 3: So yeah, there are a lot of other hair metal bands.
- 19:38Speaker 3: I will admit to have loved the Rat kind of
- 19:41Speaker 3: rose to the top. And I'm responding late to the
- 19:44Speaker 3: previous week's question. Two other bands I thought should have
- 19:47Speaker 3: been huge for the Northeast mission of Burma and the
- 19:52Speaker 3: Northwest Hazies mission of Burma was so far ahead of
- 19:56Speaker 3: the curve in their sound. It's just amazing. He go
- 19:59Speaker 3: back and listen to the early stuff and the posies
- 20:02Speaker 3: with that, those incredible harmonies mixed with a fuzzy guitar,
- 20:07Speaker 3: they should have also been at the top of the heat. Anyway, Man,
- 20:10Speaker 3: love the show. Can't wait to hear it every week.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Rock and Roller, Jim, it's interesting you bring up Rat.
- 20:15Speaker 1: I saw Nicky six posts the other day on Instagram
- 20:17Speaker 1: and he he just it was kind of sad. Yeah,
- 20:19Speaker 1: there's a picture of him and Robin Crosby and he
- 20:21Speaker 1: just said, I miss my friend Robin, and I don't know,
- 20:25Speaker 1: it was just there were all these great pictures of
- 20:27Speaker 1: him and Robin Crosby together getting up to no good.
- 20:30Speaker 1: I'm sure I wasn't a big rat guy, but I
- 20:32Speaker 1: get it. I totally get it, and I think there's
- 20:34Speaker 1: actually a rat episode there. I think Robin's death was
- 20:37Speaker 1: very sad, very sad chapter for music history, and it'd
- 20:40Speaker 1: be cool to get into that story. All right, let's
- 20:42Speaker 1: check out the two five one on Jimmy Buffett.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Hey, Jake, Ben Rockawiki from day one just heard yesterday
- 20:52Speaker 2: day before, You're gonna have a Jimmy Buffer episode. I
- 20:54Speaker 2: just want to give you my two cents. I'm in
- 20:57Speaker 2: La Lower Alabama. Uh like you. Not a big fan.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Didn't hate him, but it's kind of music or a
- 21:04Speaker 2: metal head. Anyway. I went to work for his sister.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Has a restaurant now, or had a restaurant that was
- 21:08Speaker 2: four or five. I got to meet Jimmy a couple
- 21:11Speaker 2: of times. I was an English teacher for years, so
- 21:15Speaker 2: I was very impressed with his writing ability or a
- 21:18Speaker 2: couple of books. Some of this song was the only
- 21:20Speaker 2: one that went to the dead poet, wife of a
- 21:25Speaker 2: dead poet, or whatever's great love in the Library's great
- 21:28Speaker 2: come Monday is great. I didn't care for all the
- 21:30Speaker 2: Margaritaville stuff.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Anyway.
- 21:32Speaker 2: I met the dude a couple of times. At dinner
- 21:34Speaker 2: with him. Once super chill guy. I asked him if
- 21:37Speaker 2: he hadn't done music, what would he do. He was
- 21:39Speaker 2: going to be a history teacher. He even has a
- 21:42Speaker 2: degree in history from the University of Southern Mississippi. Anyway, Oh,
- 21:47Speaker 2: you did mention you reading a book by Tom mcgwayne.
- 21:49Speaker 2: I'm sure you know this your research. But he is
- 21:52Speaker 2: Jimmy's brother in law. Married to his sister Lori, who
- 21:55Speaker 2: I met and Tom his sister Laurie was a world
- 21:59Speaker 2: class A question and a question and mcgoy's first wife
- 22:04Speaker 2: was Margot Kidder from The Superman Anyway. Love your show, brother,
- 22:08Speaker 2: I can't wait here the Buffet stuff, take care rock
- 22:10Speaker 2: a Roller.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Gotta love the metal heads showing up for Jimmy Buffett.
- 22:14Speaker 1: And you know, in the research, I knew nothing about
- 22:16Speaker 1: Jimmy Buffett before researching this episode. One thing is abundantly
- 22:20Speaker 1: clear in this research, and that is that Jimmy Buffett
- 22:23Speaker 1: was a great fucking guy, hands down. Like I kept
- 22:28Speaker 1: having this feeling in researching Jimmy Buffett, this this feeling
- 22:33Speaker 1: of oh, man, I wish this guy was still alive.
- 22:36Speaker 1: And he's just so effortlessly charming in an authentic way.
- 22:41Speaker 1: He's always smiling, or was always smiling, I should say,
- 22:45Speaker 1: and just seems like a really great dude. I don't
- 22:47Speaker 1: know that he would have been a history teacher. I
- 22:50Speaker 1: think he had. It was tough trying to get this
- 22:52Speaker 1: end of the episode. I'm still writing it. I'm trying
- 22:54Speaker 1: to make this point. He had this real entrepreneurial spirit
- 22:57Speaker 1: that I totally related to because of how he grew
- 23:00Speaker 1: up in Alabama with his sorry in Mississippi, I should
- 23:04Speaker 1: say he was born in Alabama, grew up in Mississippi,
- 23:07Speaker 1: and just who his parents were, very hard working, very
- 23:10Speaker 1: very kind of blue collar people, and obviously we see
- 23:13Speaker 1: that come through with his career. So I don't know
- 23:15Speaker 1: if he would have been a history teacher. That seems
- 23:19Speaker 1: like a stretch. Maybe that's just something he said, but
- 23:21Speaker 1: I don't know. What do I know? You met him,
- 23:22Speaker 1: I didn't meet him. As for Tom mcgaane, I'm kind
- 23:26Speaker 1: of I'm kind of more impressed that you met Tom
- 23:28Speaker 1: mcgwaine than I am. You met Jimmy Buffett. That's that's incredible.
- 23:31Speaker 1: And yes I did know about him being Jimmy's brother
- 23:33Speaker 1: in law, and did I even knew about Margot Kidder,
- 23:35Speaker 1: but I did not know that until I researched Jimmy Buffett.
- 23:38Speaker 1: So thanks for the call, appreciate it. Hope you dig.
- 23:41Speaker 1: The Buffett episode coming up soon will not be what
- 23:43Speaker 1: you expect, won't be with any of you guys expect.
- 23:45Speaker 1: All right, let's check out the five one two Jay.
- 23:48Speaker 3: It's throw in the five one two Austin, Texas. Pay
- 23:51Speaker 3: first a shout out to all my neighbors who are
- 23:55Speaker 3: digging out. It's been a rough couple of weeks, so
- 23:59Speaker 3: some love to them. Just got done listening to your
- 24:01Speaker 3: Guns n' Roses episodes fantastic as always, wondering if you've
- 24:07Speaker 3: read Duff mccagan's memoir. It's so easy. It's not definitely
- 24:12Speaker 3: recommend yet. I read a lot of memoirs rock and
- 24:16Speaker 3: roll musicians, and his heads and shoulders above the rest.
- 24:21Speaker 3: It's not your typical typical read, smart, inspiring, well written.
- 24:28Speaker 3: I do you recommend Duff mccagan, It's so easy. Keep
- 24:31Speaker 3: up the good work.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Love your pod five one two. Yes, I been praying
- 24:37Speaker 1: for all you folks in Texas, hoping that you get
- 24:40Speaker 1: some relief, those of you who were affected from the storm,
- 24:43Speaker 1: your neighbors down there, five one two. As for Duff
- 24:46Speaker 1: mccagan's memoir, I have not read it. I believe it
- 24:50Speaker 1: came out after I researched the Guns n' Roses episode.
- 24:57Speaker 1: But I've always known Duf mccagen to be a smart,
- 24:59Speaker 1: smart dude, one of the smurterer rock and rollers, so
- 25:02Speaker 1: it doesn't surprise me that his memoir is great. As
- 25:04Speaker 1: you say last time, I went to south By Southwest.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Not the last time I went to Austin, but the
- 25:09Speaker 1: last time I went to south By Southwest. It's with
- 25:11Speaker 1: Podega Girls, my band at the time, and we were
- 25:14Speaker 1: we were eating at a nice restaurant, not something we
- 25:17Speaker 1: did often, and Duff was in there at a table
- 25:20Speaker 1: with a bunch of people. It's a really nice place,
- 25:23Speaker 1: and he was just so fucking cool looking. You know,
- 25:27Speaker 1: you know those guys who are just older and cool looking,
- 25:29Speaker 1: and you're just like, damn, man, how do you do it?
- 25:32Speaker 1: How do you maintain that glow? Dude, that rock and
- 25:35Speaker 1: roll glow? And you don't get that rock and roll stink?
- 25:37Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. It's tough for old guys,
- 25:39Speaker 1: old rock and rollers, but he's pulling it off. Six
- 25:41Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three. You guys,
- 25:43Speaker 1: want to hit me up on anything under the music history, son,
- 25:46Speaker 1: you can do so. Let's see. Let's see this text
- 25:49Speaker 1: from the four one two. Hey Jake, my name is Tom.
- 25:53Speaker 1: I'm not the best disco sometimes takes me a few
- 25:55Speaker 1: weeks to listen, but I'm all caught up. The greatest
- 25:57Speaker 1: hair metal band. Well, you can't Deny Motley Crue got
- 26:00Speaker 1: into them early and eventually led me to harder thrash
- 26:03Speaker 1: metal and punk. But I did have a hairband era
- 26:06Speaker 1: and one of my favorites was Slash is do O.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Rest in peace, Ronnie. I always appreciate your listeners' suggestions.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Someone recommended Fanny after the Go Gos episode and they
- 26:16Speaker 1: were really good. Yeah that's right, Fanny forgot about them.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Matt Bowden his head almost exploded when he found out
- 26:22Speaker 1: that I'd never heard them before, and that came from
- 26:25Speaker 1: you guys at disco. So thank you. Like I said,
- 26:27Speaker 1: you guys know where the good shit is. Motley Crue
- 26:30Speaker 1: was a gateway drug to other thrash medal. I never
- 26:32Speaker 1: thought of it that way, but yeah, I can see
- 26:34Speaker 1: how that would happen for you. Dio, what a voice. Honestly,
- 26:39Speaker 1: I work out to Rainbow in the Dark at least
- 26:41Speaker 1: once a week, so good. Also, Dio, New Hampshire Boy,
- 26:45Speaker 1: thanks for the text. Four one two Let's go to
- 26:47Speaker 1: the three to four. Texan simply put Nebraska better than
- 26:53Speaker 1: Blonde on Blonde, whoa whoa easy there CoA cheese, both masterpieces.
- 26:58Speaker 1: But come on, you know, did I say that Nebraska
- 27:02Speaker 1: was better than blonde on blonde. I think I did,
- 27:04Speaker 1: and I think I stand by that. And I read
- 27:07Speaker 1: this text just because he called me coachees and I
- 27:09Speaker 1: really think that's cool, and I wanted to get it
- 27:11Speaker 1: out on the record. Okay, let's go to the nines
- 27:14Speaker 1: nine seven two texting in I beg you three exclamation points.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Please please do an episode or two on the SoCal
- 27:25Speaker 1: band anywise, you could do several, just on the lead
- 27:28Speaker 1: guitarist Fletcher alone in their original Bassis Jason Matthew Thursk
- 27:33Speaker 1: died by accidental gunshot. Fletcher took Adam Carolla hostage live
- 27:38Speaker 1: on the air in Los Angeles. One what seriously? How
- 27:42Speaker 1: do I not know that story?
- 27:45Speaker 2: All right?
- 27:45Speaker 1: You got it? Penny Wise episode coming up? I love it?
- 27:50Speaker 1: Great text six one seven nine oh six six six
- 27:53Speaker 1: three eight. You want to hit me up with this
- 27:54Speaker 1: week's question of the week, which let me see if
- 27:56Speaker 1: I can remember. It's gonna be about Waylon Jennings, Yes,
- 27:59Speaker 1: CS yes. In the question of the week is who
- 28:02Speaker 1: among the country singers was the most punk? Okay, was
- 28:06Speaker 1: it Whalen? I don't know? Six one seven nine sixty
- 28:08Speaker 1: six sixty three eight you tell me voicemail and text.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Also email discrismanpot at gmail dot com. Peter R. Chaki,
- 28:16Speaker 1: I'm most certainly pronouncing that incorrectly, and I apologize.
- 28:19Speaker 3: Peter.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Subject David Johansson, thanks for the episode eulogizing the great
- 28:23Speaker 1: David Johansson. The Dolls are tremendously underrated. They were the
- 28:27Speaker 1: first American glam band, the first punk band, the first
- 28:31Speaker 1: hair band to pave the way for the Ramones, Kiss, Poison,
- 28:34Speaker 1: Motley Crue, and on and on. Influential and important in
- 28:38Speaker 1: many ways. How they are not in the Hall of
- 28:40Speaker 1: Fame is a travesty. I especially liked your description of
- 28:42Speaker 1: Johansson as being symbolic of New York City. He was
- 28:46Speaker 1: the epitome of New York in the seventies. He will
- 28:48Speaker 1: be missed. I know this comment is a little late,
- 28:51Speaker 1: but I wanted you to know the episode on him
- 28:53Speaker 1: was greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work, as I
- 28:56Speaker 1: enjoy both Disgraceland and Hollywood Lamb. Peter, thanks so much.
- 28:59Speaker 1: Happy hit you with that one. Yeah, I mean you
- 29:03Speaker 1: kind of said it all they I did. You're absolutely right, Ramones, Kiss, Poison,
- 29:10Speaker 1: Motley Crue, none of them would exist without the New
- 29:12Speaker 1: York Dolls, how many of them are in the Rock
- 29:14Speaker 1: and Roll Hall of Fame. Ramones are pretty sure kiss
- 29:17Speaker 1: Is is Motley Crue. I don't think Moty Cruez is
- 29:20Speaker 1: Motley Crue. They probably are poisons. Not so New York
- 29:24Speaker 1: Dolls influences. Let's just say three out of four of
- 29:28Speaker 1: these bands in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Yet they're not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
- 29:32Speaker 1: And it's not like they just like kind of influenced
- 29:35Speaker 1: these bands. I mean, Gene Simmons basically stole his the
- 29:38Speaker 1: whole fucking thing from New York Dolls Motley Crue as well.
- 29:41Speaker 1: I mean, listen to the part one episode we just
- 29:44Speaker 1: released direct influence on Nikki six and the Ramones forget
- 29:48Speaker 1: about it all right, so great, great email. Appreciate you, Peter,
- 29:52Speaker 1: thank you. I'll have more in the New York Dolls
- 29:54Speaker 1: later when we get into the vault. If you guys
- 29:56Speaker 1: get something to say, don't sit on it, okay, hit
- 29:59Speaker 1: me up, hit me up like hit me up like
- 30:01Speaker 1: the rest of the callers the rest of the text
- 30:02Speaker 1: your voices. They prompt me to dig, They prompt me
- 30:07Speaker 1: to try and uncover these stories that we've been talking
- 30:10Speaker 1: about get buried the real stories. Okay. Sometimes there's stories
- 30:13Speaker 1: I'm not even aware of. I'm not even aware that
- 30:15Speaker 1: they're out there, okay. And sometimes they use our stories
- 30:17Speaker 1: with narratives that are just too convenient, too to sanitized,
- 30:21Speaker 1: to biopickish, you know, not nearly as interesting and entertaining
- 30:27Speaker 1: as the truth. And I love it when you guys
- 30:29Speaker 1: call and you point me in the right direction, So
- 30:30Speaker 1: thank you very much, and keep them coming. Listen, guys,
- 30:34Speaker 1: I want to do something different you. I want to
- 30:35Speaker 1: switch gears. I'm want to dive into our sixty second
- 30:38Speaker 1: Sports Rant and under thirty seconds. But wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, Matt,
- 30:41Speaker 1: don't start the buzzer beater countdown just yet. I have
- 30:43Speaker 1: news news, big news. We have a new sponsor for
- 30:48Speaker 1: our sixty second Sports Rant and under thirty seconds, and
- 30:50Speaker 1: that is the good folks at five hour Energy. The
- 30:53Speaker 1: sixty second Sports Rant and Under thirty Seconds is now
- 30:56Speaker 1: sponsored by five hour Energies new transfusion flavor and fired
- 31:00Speaker 1: by Golf's on official cocktail. It has hints of grape
- 31:03Speaker 1: lime and ginger, no alcohol needed. Head to your local
- 31:07Speaker 1: retailer or www. Dot five Hour Energy dot Com to
- 31:10Speaker 1: order yours today. All right, now, listen. I live in
- 31:13Speaker 1: golf Central, Okay, I live in the golf capital of
- 31:16Speaker 1: the world. Actually, I'm surrounded by golfers, like literally, I
- 31:21Speaker 1: go to the coffee shop and some of the biggest
- 31:23Speaker 1: pro golfers in the world are there. Okay, every one
- 31:26Speaker 1: of my family golfs. I sadly, until recently did not golf,
- 31:30Speaker 1: but I've started now. You can't keep me down, man.
- 31:32Speaker 1: I'm in it mainly for the old school fashion, sure,
- 31:34Speaker 1: if I'm being honest, the big hats and the knickers
- 31:36Speaker 1: and all that. No, but I gotta say I get
- 31:39Speaker 1: why people spend twenty five percent of their lives on
- 31:41Speaker 1: beautifully manicured golf courses, because it's fun and obsessive, which
- 31:46Speaker 1: you know here in Disgrace we know a thing or
- 31:48Speaker 1: two about being obsessive. And yeah, my brother in law
- 31:50Speaker 1: of the former D one golfer is just gonna have
- 31:52Speaker 1: to hang tight and let me his jmaskus look and
- 31:55Speaker 1: feel the pain partner for the day, get his stroke on.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Five Hour Energies new transfusion flavor helps me do that.
- 32:01Speaker 1: It tastes incredible, It's not too sweet, it's bright. It
- 32:05Speaker 1: goes well with the sun and the sweat and the
- 32:07Speaker 1: sweet smell of maybe, just maybe getting under par Okay,
- 32:10Speaker 1: the underpower part is a stretch, but you get my point.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Eighteen holes and five hour energies new transfusion flavor go
- 32:16Speaker 1: great together. Five hour energy in general never lets me down,
- 32:19Speaker 1: even if my putt does. All right, Matt, I'm ready
- 32:22Speaker 1: for my rant. Give me the countdown. All right, Red
- 32:24Speaker 1: Sox listen, Boston Red Sox must have been listening to
- 32:27Speaker 1: the after Party last week because they took my advice
- 32:30Speaker 1: and they did what I said. They went and they
- 32:33Speaker 1: became more interesting. What did they do? They went on
- 32:36Speaker 1: a tear. Okay, it's up to ten games out, ten
- 32:39Speaker 1: wins before the All Star break, ten straight, I should
- 32:41Speaker 1: say before the All Star break. Now, now listen, why
- 32:43Speaker 1: do we think that is what changed? Since their mediocre,
- 32:47Speaker 1: underperforming play for the basement of the Al East. They
- 32:50Speaker 1: got rid of Rappie Devers just like I said they should,
- 32:53Speaker 1: and now they need to keep it up. After the
- 32:55Speaker 1: All Star break. They got to nab another starter before
- 32:57Speaker 1: the deadline and put the Yanks in the rear view
- 32:58Speaker 1: where they belong. Let's go, oh, Boston. Don't sleep on
- 33:01Speaker 1: this advice, Brezlo. You know I'm right, just like I
- 33:03Speaker 1: was right about Devers. Shitty clubhouse guys aren't worth it.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Good pitching beats, good hitting all day long. Go get
- 33:09Speaker 1: us a stud before the deadline? All right, Matt, how'd
- 33:11Speaker 1: I do that? Beat it?
- 33:12Speaker 2: Jake?
- 33:12Speaker 4: I got to give you credit for consistency, Just like
- 33:16Speaker 4: the Red Sox. You're on a streak here. It's two
- 33:18Speaker 4: weeks in a row forty seven seconds, so you know
- 33:22Speaker 4: you got to keep training, keep working at it. You're
- 33:24Speaker 4: going to get it down to thirty, keep it up.
- 33:27Speaker 1: All right? That was a sixty second sports rant and
- 33:29Speaker 1: under thirty seconds sponsored by five Hour Energies New Transfusion
- 33:33Speaker 1: Flavor with as much caffeine as a premium cup of
- 33:36Speaker 1: coffee and with zero sugar and a compact bottle. Five
- 33:40Speaker 1: Hour Energy is ready when and where you are, even
- 33:42Speaker 1: if you're not a golfer like me. So grab your crew,
- 33:45Speaker 1: get your energy and tee off with five Hour Energies
- 33:48Speaker 1: New Transfusion Flavor, available in stores or online at www.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Dot five hour energy dot com. All Right, despite the
- 33:56Speaker 1: energy I brought to that rant, I do need a
- 33:58Speaker 1: little pick me up. So I'm take a break. I'm
- 34:01Speaker 1: gonna hit that five hour energy dot Com Transfusion flavor.
- 34:04Speaker 1: It is mid afternoon, the sun is shining. I might
- 34:07Speaker 1: not be on a golf course, guys, but I'm here
- 34:09Speaker 1: and I am definitely hitting under power in this episode.
- 34:12Speaker 1: All right, and so are you guys. Take a quick break.
- 34:14Speaker 1: I'll be back in a flash. All right, guys, we
- 34:29Speaker 1: are back here in the after party. It is hot
- 34:34Speaker 1: as blazes in my studio today. It's because I got
- 34:38Speaker 1: these lights on. I gotta shut them off. It gets
- 34:41Speaker 1: hot in here in the studio. I record in two
- 34:43Speaker 1: different spots. I record at my desk like I'm doing
- 34:46Speaker 1: right now. For the after Party. For the full episodes,
- 34:48Speaker 1: I record in a booth, in a whisper room booth,
- 34:51Speaker 1: which is a pretty tight quarters and it's completely soundproof,
- 34:55Speaker 1: and it gets really really hot in there. And you know,
- 34:59Speaker 1: I'm gonna share a little bit here for you. So
- 35:03Speaker 1: this was about, I don't know, two weeks ago. I
- 35:05Speaker 1: was recording. It's a really really really really hot day.
- 35:08Speaker 1: And the more I went into the booth and the
- 35:11Speaker 1: more I came out to sort of like get a
- 35:13Speaker 1: water in between takes and go back, and I dropped
- 35:16Speaker 1: some clothing, is what I'm saying. Okay, and I got
- 35:18Speaker 1: down to near nothing by the end of it.
- 35:20Speaker 3: Okay.
- 35:20Speaker 1: It took me, like you know, it takes me like
- 35:22Speaker 1: thirty minutes or forty minutes to record these things really
- 35:24Speaker 1: hot again, really hot. And my son walks in the
- 35:29Speaker 1: room and he's he's like, why, what's happening. This is
- 35:33Speaker 1: my seven year old son. And I explained to him,
- 35:36Speaker 1: what's going on, you know, not a big deal whatever.
- 35:38Speaker 1: And fast forward to a week later, we're at a
- 35:43Speaker 1: dinner party, family dinner party, catered by a chef, and
- 35:48Speaker 1: we're at these people's house, this house of this of
- 35:52Speaker 1: this couple that we did not know. And it's not
- 35:56Speaker 1: just me and my wife and my kids. It's me,
- 35:57Speaker 1: my wife, my kids, and and my in laws, and
- 36:03Speaker 1: it's this family and there their children who are a
- 36:06Speaker 1: college and high school age and one adult. So there's
- 36:09Speaker 1: about twelve of us all sitting at this one table.
- 36:12Speaker 1: And it's a great meal, a course meal, and very
- 36:17Speaker 1: much you know, signed seating, like the whole thing, you know,
- 36:20Speaker 1: And we've never met any of these folks before. They
- 36:23Speaker 1: were friends of my father in laws, and I gotta say,
- 36:28Speaker 1: my sons are killing it. You know, they're making conversation.
- 36:31Speaker 1: And this is the type of thing where like it's
- 36:32Speaker 1: one of those dinner parties where we were sitting at
- 36:35Speaker 1: a big round table and for the most part, you know,
- 36:37Speaker 1: one person was speaking at a time. There wasn't a
- 36:40Speaker 1: lot of sort of side conversations going on. There was.
- 36:42Speaker 1: It wasn't so uptight that it was just like I mentioned,
- 36:47Speaker 1: but for the most for a good portion of it,
- 36:49Speaker 1: it was just like, you know, one person would talk.
- 36:51Speaker 1: It was very it was very conversational, but it was
- 36:53Speaker 1: also very formal, is my point. And I was so
- 36:55Speaker 1: proud of my sons, both of them, you know, so proud,
- 36:58Speaker 1: like like they're eating you know, turtle soup and they're
- 37:01Speaker 1: eating they're eating stuff that like they never would would
- 37:05Speaker 1: would eat, you know, crab cakes they never eat. If
- 37:08Speaker 1: I try to get any of they're just they're really
- 37:09Speaker 1: trying their best and they're trying to make conversation. Again
- 37:12Speaker 1: eleven and seven years old, and uh, you know my
- 37:16Speaker 1: oldest you know, he brings up the fact that you know,
- 37:20Speaker 1: they cloned a dire wolf. It was very interesting point
- 37:23Speaker 1: and a really great conversational point. For this dinner and
- 37:26Speaker 1: I couldn't have been more proud of him. And then
- 37:28Speaker 1: my youngest, my seven year old, he takes the cue
- 37:33Speaker 1: and he's like, uh, I got to say something interesting.
- 37:36Speaker 1: And this is after, you know, this is after we
- 37:39Speaker 1: did the whole you know, what do you do for
- 37:40Speaker 1: a living? Blah blah blah blah, and uh, William goes
- 37:44Speaker 1: dead quiet, dead quiet point in the conversation, goes my
- 37:48Speaker 1: dad records this podcast naked, and like total fucking church
- 37:54Speaker 1: for art. Everybody stops talking except our family, who just
- 37:58Speaker 1: bursts out laughing. The other our family is not laughing
- 38:01Speaker 1: at all. They've never met us before. They think like,
- 38:03Speaker 1: I'm some psychopath. Just yeah, one of those moments. Anyways,
- 38:09Speaker 1: I wanted to share that with you. I don't know why.
- 38:11Speaker 1: I just did. I feel, you know, I can't anyhow,
- 38:13Speaker 1: That's the thing, and that happened. Here we go, Okay,
- 38:16Speaker 1: what are we doing the hollywood Land Minute this week
- 38:18Speaker 1: on the Hollywood Land Show. Over in the Hollywood Land Feed,
- 38:20Speaker 1: we get into the iconic Marlon Brando. And if you
- 38:24Speaker 1: want to hear a Marlon Brando story that you likely
- 38:27Speaker 1: have never heard before, then you must go to the
- 38:29Speaker 1: Hollywood Land Feed and subscribe and follow and listen and
- 38:33Speaker 1: if you want more conversation like this one that I'm
- 38:36Speaker 1: giving you right here, but with a little more back
- 38:38Speaker 1: and forth, a little more conversational. Me and my guys
- 38:42Speaker 1: Zeth are over in the Hollywood Land Feed every week
- 38:45Speaker 1: in the Rap Party, doing our thing, and we get
- 38:48Speaker 1: into some great music recommendations, which is one of the
- 38:50Speaker 1: highlights of my week, if I'm being honest, Matt, want
- 38:53Speaker 1: you to go ahead, play these guys a clip. Okay,
- 38:57Speaker 1: Marlon Brando made me think of Marlon Jackson, brother of Tito, Jackie, Jermaine,
- 39:05Speaker 1: and Michael, the five in the Jackson Five. Now, Marlon
- 39:09Speaker 1: Jackson has a long I don't want to say illustrious,
- 39:12Speaker 1: but he does have a career in music. And I
- 39:15Speaker 1: am recommending none of that. However, at one point, at
- 39:21Speaker 1: one point, I believe in nineteen eighty three, Marlon Jackson
- 39:25Speaker 1: produced an album by soul singer Betty Right. Betty Right
- 39:30Speaker 1: is incredible, the album that Marlon Jackson produced. I don't
- 39:34Speaker 1: know if it's incredible. I've never heard it, but I
- 39:36Speaker 1: have heard I Love the Way You Love from nineteen
- 39:39Speaker 1: seventy two by Betty right, and it features the excellent
- 39:44Speaker 1: song Cleanup Woman. Okay, so Marlon Brando got me, Marlon
- 39:50Speaker 1: Jackson got me, Betty Right gets the listener's clean Up
- 39:54Speaker 1: Woman as the song for my recommendation this week. Have
- 39:58Speaker 1: you heard Cleanup Woman?
- 39:59Speaker 5: By the way, yes, I've heard clean that. There was,
- 40:01Speaker 5: and there was a great compilation. I think Rhino put
- 40:04Speaker 5: out Rhino or somebody back on like the early two thousands.
- 40:07Speaker 5: There were like three lesser known soul R and B
- 40:11Speaker 5: female singers, Canny Satan, Betty Wright, and there was a
- 40:15Speaker 5: third and they put out these incredible compilation albums. And
- 40:18Speaker 5: that's where I first heard about Betty Right.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Anyways, all right, that is Hollywood Land. That's a Hollywood
- 40:23Speaker 1: and true crime podcast that we got going on. You
- 40:25Speaker 1: want to check that out, you want to subscribe, get
- 40:27Speaker 1: over there and do so today before we run out.
- 40:30Speaker 1: I don't know what I'm talking about. All right, listen,
- 40:33Speaker 1: five Bucks. I went through this earlier. Five Bucks is
- 40:35Speaker 1: going to get your access to not just add free
- 40:36Speaker 1: listening here in Disgraceland and hollywood Land. Five Bucks isn't
- 40:39Speaker 1: just going to get you that. It's not going to
- 40:41Speaker 1: just get you that. Plus an extra episode of Disgraceland.
- 40:45Speaker 1: It's also going to get you more of this here
- 40:47Speaker 1: bonus episode and this week in particular, you're not gonna
- 40:50Speaker 1: want to miss out because I'm going to give you
- 40:51Speaker 1: three stories about Nikki six that were just two off
- 40:55Speaker 1: the fucking charts for the full episode for the wide feed. Okay,
- 40:58Speaker 1: so that's coming up. Go to this grace lampod dot
- 41:01Speaker 1: com slash membership. Become a Disgrace lam member today. All right,
- 41:19Speaker 1: we are back. Let's dip in quickly to some of
- 41:22Speaker 1: the subjects that we mentioned on this show that haven't
- 41:25Speaker 1: featured in Disgracelam before. Jeff Buckley. We talked about Jeff
- 41:28Speaker 1: Buckley earlier in the B block, and we have an
- 41:30Speaker 1: episode on Jeff Buckley. And if you want to hear
- 41:32Speaker 1: about Jeff Buckley's incredible, diverse group of influences and you
- 41:39Speaker 1: want to hear more about how he died sadly, then
- 41:41Speaker 1: you got to check this episode out. It's a heartbreaker
- 41:44Speaker 1: and I'm sure it'll be a good primer to the
- 41:46Speaker 1: doc that is coming out. I believe in August is
- 41:49Speaker 1: when the documentaries released, we mentioned the New York Dolls,
- 41:52Speaker 1: and in that New York Dolls episode we get into
- 41:54Speaker 1: hot it's kind of the opposite of the Jeff Buckley
- 41:56Speaker 1: when we get into if you want to hear about
- 41:57Speaker 1: how they influence Kiss, how they influence the remote owns.
- 42:00Speaker 1: If you want to hear how the caller said David
- 42:03Speaker 1: Johansson was sort of the embodiment of New York City.
- 42:06Speaker 1: And do you want to hear about the arrest and
- 42:09Speaker 1: some all around you know, rock and roll violence, then
- 42:12Speaker 1: you know that New York Dolls episode is waiting for you.
- 42:13Speaker 1: We mentioned Bob Dylan, and if you just got a
- 42:15Speaker 1: hanker in for some Dylan, you want to know why
- 42:17Speaker 1: or why not he may or may not have been
- 42:19Speaker 1: involved with the whole Watergate scandal back in the early
- 42:22Speaker 1: seventies with Nixon and all. Then Hey, Bob Dylan Part
- 42:24Speaker 1: two it waits. We also got Bob Dylan Part one,
- 42:27Speaker 1: and that one's going to disrupt the myth of the
- 42:29Speaker 1: motorcycle accident and give you the lowdown on what we
- 42:32Speaker 1: think actually happened. Matt will have the information, as he
- 42:36Speaker 1: does every week on these episodes, in the show notes
- 42:39Speaker 1: of this bonus episode. He'll make it easier for you
- 42:41Speaker 1: to find Jeff Buckley New York Dolls, Bob Dylan. All right,
- 42:45Speaker 1: let's recap Shallow We Number one, this week's full episode
- 42:48Speaker 1: on Nikki six is available for you right now. Go

- 43:22Speaker 1: baby dig Now that the night is over. Yes, Michael Hutchins,
- 43:26Speaker 1: thank you. Number six. Do not forget disc goes. This
- 43:28Speaker 1: isn't just content, it's community, a community of the obsessed.
- 43:31Speaker 1: No one cares about music, books, records and the crime
- 43:34Speaker 1: and grime that ties it all together like you do.
- 43:36Speaker 1: And well that's a disgrace, all right. December twenty third,
- 43:41Speaker 1: nineteen eighty seven, the date of Nikki six's first death.
- 43:47Speaker 1: Does that make sense? Sort of? Kind of, not really,
- 43:49Speaker 1: I don't care. Here's what we were listening to in
- 43:51Speaker 1: America on December twenty third, nineteen eighty seven. From the
