- 0:58SPEAKER_01: I'm a veteran, and I brought the same mission first mindset back to Illinois.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: While others talk about the way it's always been done, my team focuses on the technical precision of how a roof should be built.

- 1:24SPEAKER_05: Hey, welcome back to Designing and Building the Midwest one community at a time.
- 1:28SPEAKER_05: I'm your host, Chris with Big Dog Construction, your local window depot.
- 1:32SPEAKER_05: And with me as usual is our lovely co-host, Caitlin.
- 1:35SPEAKER_05: Hi.
- 1:35SPEAKER_05: And this is another episode of the Big Dog Game Plan.
- 1:38SPEAKER_05: Over the last several episodes, we've been walking you through what it really takes to have a successful remodeling project.
- 1:45SPEAKER_05: We talked about planning, budgeting, DIY versus hiring professional, defining your scope, choosing the right contractor, what actually happens during construction, change orders, and protecting your investment after that project is finished.
- 1:58SPEAKER_05: But today we're gonna pull back the curtain again.
- 2:01SPEAKER_05: We've done this before because there's a question we hear all the time.
- 2:04SPEAKER_05: I know what I want, but I don't know how to get there.
- 2:08SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 2:09SPEAKER_05: Which we talk about the big dog game plan.
- 2:11SPEAKER_05: You can download that, call us, email us, we'll get it to you in your hands, right?
- 2:15SPEAKER_05: So maybe you've got pictures saved on Pinterest.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: Pinterest is like I don't know if that'll come in out in audio or not, but I used to really be into it, but now it's just it's really unattainable.
- 2:26SPEAKER_03: Like I literally have deleted it because I'm like Pinterest?
- 2:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because it's just not even none of these ideas are attainable.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: And and I have Gemini now, so it's like awesome.
- 2:37SPEAKER_03: Love it.
- 2:38SPEAKER_05: Or maybe you got the Pinterest thing, but maybe you've got a folder full of ideas, right?
- 2:42SPEAKER_05: Been cutting them out of magazines if magazines are a thing still.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: Remember, and you put them all on a board.
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: That was fun.
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: I used to even do that.
- 2:49SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 2:50SPEAKER_05: Or maybe you've been watching the dreaded HGTV.
- 2:53SPEAKER_05: It's not dreaded.
- 2:54SPEAKER_05: I shouldn't say that.
- 2:55SPEAKER_05: Tamara started there on HGTV, now she's on Magnolia Network and all that Tamara Day.
- 2:59SPEAKER_05: But, you know, it I think I might have told this story before, but one year I was like, why am I getting so many damn requests for white subway tile and ship and shiplap and bat and shiplap?
- 3:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 3:09SPEAKER_05: And I happened to catch one episode of Joanna Gaines.
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 3:12SPEAKER_05: Now I understand why I was doing so much damn white subway shiplap.
- 3:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 3:17SPEAKER_05: But it was beautiful at the time, it worked great.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 3:20SPEAKER_05: Hey, but maybe you've been walking through your house for five years saying, someday we're gonna fix this stuff.
- 3:25SPEAKER_05: And maybe you have hundreds of ideas, but no idea where to start.
- 3:29SPEAKER_05: That's exactly where Big Dog Design Process comes in.
- 3:32SPEAKER_05: Today we're gonna show you how we take your ideas, your vision, your wish list, mash them all up together, right?
- 3:39SPEAKER_05: And turn it all out into a real plan that actually can be built.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: And that really is true because so many people like several different types of styles, I guess you would say.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: So they don't know how to pull those or mix all those together without it looking completely like hodgepodge.
- 3:55SPEAKER_05: Well, you know, and and right, and we kind of talked about that with Clara, you know, our intern and design intern about those different types and designs and themes.
- 4:02SPEAKER_05: And then we talked about it with Tamara, Tamara Day, and she was talking about you know what?
- 4:06SPEAKER_05: It's whatever works for you, right?
- 4:08SPEAKER_05: There's no wrong way or right way, it's whatever works for you.
- 4:10SPEAKER_05: But here at Big Dog, we try to make the flow work for you.
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: And the tones, and Tamara even did admit we're talking about my tone, Willis.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: That that like the tones of like whether it's a cool tone, a warm tone, or whatever.
- 4:24SPEAKER_05: A year ago, you wouldn't be talking like that.
- 4:25SPEAKER_05: I don't think so.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: This is what I'm saying.
- 4:27SPEAKER_03: I have learned so much, and I tell my Chris.
- 4:30SPEAKER_03: Yes, I tell my Chris so much.
- 4:32SPEAKER_03: I'm like, I literally have learned from you, from myself, from our guests, from just all of it.
- 4:37SPEAKER_03: And then I I find myself like researching stuff about it now because I'm interested in it.
- 4:43SPEAKER_03: I am.
- 4:44SPEAKER_05: Katie be getting smarter every day.
- 4:46SPEAKER_03: Every day.
- 4:46SPEAKER_03: 38, feeling great.
- 4:48SPEAKER_05: Gonna be 38 for the next five years.
- 4:50SPEAKER_03: That's damn right.
- 4:51SPEAKER_05: It's damn straight.
- 4:52SPEAKER_05: Well, hey, let's let's pay a few bills before we uh dig into the big dog bite here.
- 4:57SPEAKER_05: Hey, let's talk about our 10x partner, elite roofing professionals.
- 5:01SPEAKER_05: Elite.
- 5:02SPEAKER_05: They are covering the Midwest for us.
- 5:04SPEAKER_05: And, well, actually, Ohio is part of the Midwest, too.
- 5:07SPEAKER_05: So they do have an office they've opened in.
- 5:08SPEAKER_05: But I think it's worth to note.
- 5:10SPEAKER_05: It is right.
- 5:11SPEAKER_05: They are expanding, growing, always continually to push the envelope of their knowledge, their skill base, training and educating their team members that they have.
- 5:20SPEAKER_05: They have even implemented um a healthy eating plan in their company.
- 5:25SPEAKER_05: They have hired a personal trainer to come in and work with their core team members.
- 5:30SPEAKER_05: Chris.
- 5:30SPEAKER_05: You didn't even know that, did you?
- 5:31SPEAKER_03: I had no idea.
- 5:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 5:33SPEAKER_03: Well, I can't wait to hear about it.
- 5:35SPEAKER_05: Kenny Hyde the Wellness Guide comes in every Tuesday and works with.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: Hold on a second.
- 5:39SPEAKER_03: What did you just say?
- 5:40SPEAKER_05: Kenny Hyde, the Wellness Guide, comes in.
- 5:43SPEAKER_03: He took that off of Bill Nye, the science guy.
- 5:45SPEAKER_03: Kenny Hyde, the Wellness Guide.
- 5:48SPEAKER_05: He may, he may book you to record a commercial for him, right?
- 5:51SPEAKER_05: Hey, anyway, over at yeah, hey Kenny, if you're listening, we've got you covered right here at Big Dog Media Productions.
- 5:58SPEAKER_05: We'll take you care of, right?
- 5:59SPEAKER_05: No.
- 6:00SPEAKER_05: Hey, but if you want to get a hold of them, give them a call at 217-851-3836.
- 6:05SPEAKER_05: Jenny, the lovely Jenny, will pick up the phone and answer all your questions.
- 6:09SPEAKER_05: Get you scheduled for your free roof assessment.
- 6:12SPEAKER_05: They'll come out, no cost to you.
- 6:14SPEAKER_05: Check out your roof, check for any damage, check for things like that.
- 6:17SPEAKER_05: I do believe they have some new things coming out too that they're going to be offering us little little uh homeowners, you know, some maintenance plans that will give us a little insurance every month, right?
- 6:27SPEAKER_05: If we want, um, that would go towards a new roof down the road, too.
- 6:30SPEAKER_05: So it's kind of like a prepay to that new roof thing, right?
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: Yes, and I'm sure we'll be talking about it when I see him.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: Well, yeah, so we'll have Blake on the video.
- 6:39SPEAKER_05: Yep, Blake the owner, he'll be back on with us uh next couple episodes as well.
- 6:42SPEAKER_05: Oh, good.
- 6:42SPEAKER_05: He'll probably be doing a launch with that that we just kind of like.
- 6:45SPEAKER_05: Hopefully he's not mad I'll leak that out there.
- 6:46SPEAKER_03: But no, it's just a little dry dry teaser.
- 6:49SPEAKER_05: That's right, dry teaser because you have a dry roof from Elite Roofing Professionals.
- 6:53SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, Atlanta.
- 6:55SPEAKER_05: That was a total talking about locked it in.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was.
- 6:59SPEAKER_05: But hey, you can also find them on the interweb at eliteroofingprofessionals.com.
- 7:03SPEAKER_05: Or again, call Jenny at 217-851-3836.
- 7:07SPEAKER_05: So we do appreciate them being a 10X partner, the first 10X partner with us here at our design and build podcasts.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: The OG, man.
- 7:14SPEAKER_05: They are the OGs here at the BGs, B Dog, B Dog, BGs, I don't know.
- 7:20SPEAKER_05: Anyway, B D G.
- 7:21SPEAKER_05: Hey, big dog bite coming at you.
- 7:23SPEAKER_05: Here's here's today's big dog bite.
- 7:25SPEAKER_05: You don't have to know how to build your dream home.
- 7:28SPEAKER_05: You just need to know how you want to live in it.
- 7:31SPEAKER_05: Think about that, right?
- 7:32SPEAKER_05: That's our job.
- 7:33SPEAKER_05: You bring the vision, we'll help you figure out how to make it real.
- 7:36SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 7:36SPEAKER_05: So that's the big dog bite we're gonna dive into today.
- 7:39SPEAKER_05: With that, it all starts with a conversation, not a construction plan.
- 7:43SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 7:43SPEAKER_05: Right?
- 7:44SPEAKER_05: So here's something that's really important.
- 7:46SPEAKER_05: When you first meet with the big dog, maybe me, maybe not.
- 7:49SPEAKER_05: Most likely you're gonna meet me with our designers, right?
- 7:51SPEAKER_05: We're not starting with a hammer, we're not starting with the contract, and we're not even necessarily starting with a price.
- 7:57SPEAKER_05: We're starting with conversation.
- 7:59SPEAKER_05: We want to know what's bothering you about your current space, what's working, what's not working, and what do you wish you had that you don't have?
- 8:08SPEAKER_05: And how do you really use the space?
- 8:10SPEAKER_05: Who's using it?
- 8:11SPEAKER_05: Is it the kids?
- 8:12SPEAKER_05: Is it you?
- 8:12SPEAKER_05: Is it the in-laws, is it the outlaws, or the whatever you want them to be, right?
- 8:16SPEAKER_05: How long do you plan to stay in the home?
- 8:17SPEAKER_05: We always ask our clients, is this your one, three, five, ten-year plan or life plan?
- 8:22SPEAKER_03: Forever, yeah.
- 8:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you can be here forever.
- 8:24SPEAKER_05: No, it's a dog.
- 8:25SPEAKER_05: Forever, then, or a cat, whatever you're into, or feather ever.
- 8:28SPEAKER_05: You know, it'd be a bird.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: Oh my gosh.
- 8:29SPEAKER_05: I I'm on I'm on one.
- 8:31SPEAKER_05: Sorry.
- 8:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I just found out something really weird about birds this weekend.
- 8:35SPEAKER_03: I mean, this is a total tangent.
- 8:37SPEAKER_03: Did you know that all birds like they don't pee?
- 8:41SPEAKER_05: It's in their poo.
- 8:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:42SPEAKER_05: I knew that.
- 8:43SPEAKER_03: Never in my life.
- 8:44SPEAKER_05: Chickens don't pee either because it's in their poo.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: No, chicken turkey's nothing.
- 8:48SPEAKER_03: I'm like, this is this all my whole life.
- 8:50SPEAKER_05: That's foul.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: It's my whole life.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: But see the birds.
- 8:54SPEAKER_03: But like going back, I think you were talking about like functionality.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: A lot of people have all these problems in their house.
- 9:01SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 9:02SPEAKER_03: And it's because it's not meeting them at their life, like with the function that it needs.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: And they don't even think, oh, maybe if I moved the laundry basket over here instead, right, my and put this table over here, my life be easier.
- 9:15SPEAKER_05: And that's what our designers help too.
- 9:17SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 9:17SPEAKER_05: That's that's the thing with that.
- 9:19SPEAKER_03: Even I still need help doing that stuff.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: Obviously.
- 9:22SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 9:22SPEAKER_05: And here's the thing: two homeowners can have the exact same square footage and need two completely different solutions.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: A hundred percent.
- 9:29SPEAKER_05: Like what you were just saying there.
- 9:30SPEAKER_05: Kids.
- 9:31SPEAKER_05: So a family with three kids, yeah.
- 9:33SPEAKER_05: You know, may need storage and durability.
- 9:35SPEAKER_05: Kids are gonna be beating the crap out of right.
- 9:37SPEAKER_05: An empty nest couple, an empty nest couple may want entertaining space.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 9:41SPEAKER_05: Or a home gym or a home theater room versus a bedroom.
- 9:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, or like the three the home with the three kids probably wants a mud room.
- 9:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, slop room.
- 9:51SPEAKER_05: Hey, yeah.
- 9:51SPEAKER_05: Y'all get in that room.
- 9:52SPEAKER_03: Like my mom tagged you in that that you posted.
- 9:55SPEAKER_03: She's like, you need this.
- 9:56SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 9:57SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 9:57SPEAKER_05: Or someone playing into age and place may need accessibility.
- 10:01SPEAKER_05: Oh, that's right.
- 10:02SPEAKER_05: Wire doors, grab bars, blocking, stuff like that, uh, lower cabinets.
- 10:05SPEAKER_05: Someone preparing to sell may be thinking about completely different priorities.
- 10:09SPEAKER_05: And that's why our process starts with you, not the materials, not the products, you and the conversation.
- 10:16SPEAKER_05: So that's what I want to let you know.
- 10:17SPEAKER_05: That's kind of the first step is you bringing all your Pinterest, all your ideas, all your HGTV wishes and all that to us, right?
- 10:24SPEAKER_03: So And it takes overwhelm out of it.
- 10:26SPEAKER_05: It does.
- 10:27SPEAKER_03: So much.
- 10:28SPEAKER_05: It does.
- 10:28SPEAKER_03: See, I would use Pinterest again if I knew Susan and Clara could help me.
- 10:32SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 10:32SPEAKER_03: It's just too much for me.
- 10:34SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 10:34SPEAKER_05: I understand.
- 10:35SPEAKER_05: And it does get overwhelming for folks, right?
- 10:37SPEAKER_05: But here's the thing that we want our homeowners to understand is give yourself the permission to dream and dream big.
- 10:44SPEAKER_05: Don't start by saying, I can't afford it, right?
- 10:47SPEAKER_05: Just that's the anti-10X thing to think, say, right?
- 10:50SPEAKER_03: Well, I've never said that.
- 10:52SPEAKER_05: Massive action.
- 10:53SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 10:54SPEAKER_05: Massive action.
- 10:55SPEAKER_05: So that's massive action and dreaming.
- 10:56SPEAKER_05: Set your targets and your dreams so big, and let's see if you can get to them, right?
- 11:01SPEAKER_05: And don't start by saying that's probably impossible.
- 11:04SPEAKER_05: I tell folks all the time, anything is possible as long as you're willing to pay for it.
- 11:08SPEAKER_05: And that's not me being money hungry.
- 11:11SPEAKER_05: That's just saying, literally, if you want something done, we'll make it happen and we'll figure out how to do it as long as you pay for it.
- 11:16SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 11:17SPEAKER_03: And another thing that you guys are gonna do, like maybe you would have like a second option, a plan B that might be more affordable that would still fit in with the homeowner.
- 11:26SPEAKER_03: You know, like you're giving them options.
- 11:28SPEAKER_05: As long as they as long as they get the the same the same solution effect, whatever.
- 11:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, the same end result that they're looking for.
- 11:34SPEAKER_05: There may be another way, you know, there's more than one way to skin that cat.
- 11:38SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 11:38SPEAKER_05: So anyway, just don't start by limiting yourself before you even explored the possibilities.
- 11:44SPEAKER_05: That's what we're here for is to help you figure out how to make your dreams attainable, right?
- 11:49SPEAKER_03: I like how you tell us everything.
- 11:51SPEAKER_05: The big ideas, the crazy ideas.
- 11:53SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm in for that too, right?
- 11:55SPEAKER_05: The things you've always wanted, the things you saw in another home, the things you saw online.
- 12:00SPEAKER_05: Give us the whole wish list.
- 12:02SPEAKER_05: Because I actually had one of my employees this morning go, man, I love working here because we do creative things.
- 12:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I agree.
- 12:08SPEAKER_05: We do things that are outside the box.
- 12:09SPEAKER_03: I agree.
- 12:10SPEAKER_05: It's not just box store, grab this, boom, hang it and done.
- 12:13SPEAKER_05: It's we're custom cutting, making things fit to make them unique to that home.
- 12:17SPEAKER_03: Yes, you do customize.
- 12:18SPEAKER_03: Another thing that I've noticed about you guys too is you can tell that you have designers like compared to any other construction company.
- 12:26SPEAKER_03: And I'm not dogging anything about it.
- 12:28SPEAKER_05: There's great people out there, right?
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: Yes, they do great work, but they're not designers.
- 12:32SPEAKER_05: They're taking other people's plans or ideas, or they're being told by the homeowner, well, I want this.
- 12:38SPEAKER_05: And and a lot of them are men that are just like, okay, man, I'm building like and or it costs the homeowner more money because the homeowner then sees it and goes, I don't like it.
- 12:45SPEAKER_05: Redo it.
- 12:46SPEAKER_05: And the content is like, Well, you're gonna pay me again.
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: That's why I can always start.
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: Yes, I can tell that you have designers, just everything flows better.
- 12:53SPEAKER_03: It is very creative and stuff that you don't see normally.
- 12:59SPEAKER_05: Correct.
- 12:59SPEAKER_05: And because our job isn't to tell you what you can't do, our job is to figure it out, right?
- 13:05SPEAKER_05: What can we do?
- 13:06SPEAKER_05: Problem solvers solving problems.
- 13:07SPEAKER_05: How do we prioritize it?
- 13:09SPEAKER_05: And that's where we come in, right?
- 13:10SPEAKER_05: That wish list.
- 13:11SPEAKER_05: I brought that up there at the end, the wish list.
- 13:13SPEAKER_05: This is where we start organizing the dream.
- 13:15SPEAKER_05: We break your ideas down into, we kind of have talked about your must-haves.
- 13:19SPEAKER_05: We must have.
- 13:20SPEAKER_05: These are things you absolutely have to have happen.
- 13:23SPEAKER_05: Maybe it's more storage, larger kitchen, a better bathroom, bedroom addition, improved accessibility, safer entry, whatever it is, these are all non-negotiables.
- 13:32SPEAKER_05: They're must-haves, right?
- 13:33SPEAKER_05: This is from your wish list that we had the conversation with and helped you build.
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: And obviously, so the wish list would go after the things that like have to get done as far as like safety.
- 13:45SPEAKER_05: Nope.
- 13:45SPEAKER_05: Everything's on the wish list.
- 13:46SPEAKER_05: Everything's on the wish list.
- 13:47SPEAKER_05: But now we're prioritizing that list wish list.
- 13:49SPEAKER_03: But the priority would be the safety first.
- 13:52SPEAKER_05: Safety could be.
- 13:53SPEAKER_05: Or I must have, or I'm not singling out women, but a woman may be like, I must have this makeup room, or I must have this walk-in closet of this size.
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: I must have safety things.
- 14:06SPEAKER_05: It's a safety thing for the husband.
- 14:08SPEAKER_05: I was just or the man in their life, so or their partner.
- 14:11SPEAKER_05: So it could be a safety thing.
- 14:13SPEAKER_05: So hey, on this wish list, we wrote broke out the must-haves.
- 14:16SPEAKER_05: Now we have the nice to haves.
- 14:18SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 14:19SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 14:19SPEAKER_05: These are the things you'd love to have, but could live without, right?
- 14:22SPEAKER_05: Maybe it's a fireplace, custom cabinetry, larger island, upgraded lighting, a special feature wall.
- 14:29SPEAKER_05: These are where we start making decisions based on budget.
- 14:32SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 14:33SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 14:33SPEAKER_05: So now we have the must-haves and where our budget is.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: Like this is a hundred percent.
- 14:38SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 14:39SPEAKER_05: We can add some of these nice to haves in there because we still have room in our budget.
- 14:43SPEAKER_05: And then we have our dream features.
- 14:47SPEAKER_05: Make a little dream noise there, maybe.
- 14:48SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 14:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 14:50SPEAKER_05: A little cloud.
- 14:50SPEAKER_05: I'm sorry.
- 14:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah, little dream.
- 14:52SPEAKER_05: So these are the things you'd say.
- 14:53SPEAKER_05: If money wasn't an issue, I'd love this.
- 14:55SPEAKER_05: I'd love that.
- 14:56SPEAKER_05: I'd love to do this.
- 14:57SPEAKER_05: And you know what?
- 14:58SPEAKER_05: We want to hear those things too.
- 15:00SPEAKER_05: Because there may be opportunities where we can get those into the project and budget-wise, because if we do it now while we're doing X, it's easier to put Y in there and then later on.
- 15:11SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 15:11SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 15:11SPEAKER_05: Later on.
- 15:12SPEAKER_05: Or correct.
- 15:13SPEAKER_05: We it's like prime example.
- 15:15SPEAKER_05: This this is a it's it's kind of a must-have, but if someone's in their 40s and they're in their forever home, that I'm here, right?
- 15:23SPEAKER_05: And we're doing a complete bathroom mod, we're gonna put solid blocking in those walls for grab bars down the road.
- 15:28SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 15:29SPEAKER_05: They know now that that's in there.
- 15:31SPEAKER_05: So we save them money by putting that in there now versus having a hollow wall anchored type grab bar.
- 15:37SPEAKER_03: That's what I mean.
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: And I think that that's so helpful because you guys have the ability to think about that and plan that for for them in the future.
- 15:45SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 15:45SPEAKER_05: Well, and speaking of future, because sometimes a dream feature can inspire a completely different solution for the future.
- 15:53SPEAKER_05: So and again, there's more than one way on that dream list to make those dreams happen.
- 15:58SPEAKER_05: Correct.
- 15:58SPEAKER_05: We make dreams come true, and we're not even Disneylands.
- 16:01SPEAKER_03: I was just gonna say, screw Disneyland.
- 16:03SPEAKER_03: You got a pig toggle.
- 16:05SPEAKER_05: You don't have to pay 200 bucks a ticket to come see me a day, right?
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: Or wait in line.
- 16:09SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 16:10SPEAKER_05: Hey, so we also want to know how do you want to live, right?
- 16:13SPEAKER_05: So we take the conversation deeper because good design isn't just about how rooms look, it's about how it works.
- 16:20SPEAKER_05: I'll give you a quick example of that.
- 16:22SPEAKER_05: Biggest thing.
- 16:22SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 16:23SPEAKER_05: So let's say someone tells us, I want a bigger kitchen.
- 16:26SPEAKER_05: Okay, but why?
- 16:28SPEAKER_05: Maybe they're constantly running out of counter space.
- 16:31SPEAKER_05: Maybe the kids are doing homework at the kitchen table.
- 16:33SPEAKER_05: Maybe they entertain frequently and they all like to gather there, right?
- 16:37SPEAKER_05: Around an island or something.
- 16:38SPEAKER_05: Maybe they need more pantry storage.
- 16:40SPEAKER_05: Maybe everyone gathers, like I just said, in the kitchen and they're feeling tired of feeling cramped when they're trying to cook, right?
- 16:46SPEAKER_05: That's me.
- 16:46SPEAKER_05: Those answers change the design.
- 16:49SPEAKER_05: We're not just designing a bigger kitchen, we're designing a kitchen that works better for your life.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: That's functional to you.
- 16:55SPEAKER_03: Like I can't I just think that helps so much.
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: But once I even started decorating in a functional manner, it made my house look so much better.
- 17:05SPEAKER_05: Well, and that's the difference between decorating and designing.
- 17:08SPEAKER_03: Okay, that I designed functionally.
- 17:10SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 17:11SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 17:12SPEAKER_05: So perfect, perfect thing.
- 17:13SPEAKER_05: So just remember that we want to ask you how do you want to live?
- 17:17SPEAKER_05: What do you need this space for?
- 17:18SPEAKER_05: You know, it's we asked the wise.
- 17:20SPEAKER_05: What's the real reason?
- 17:21SPEAKER_05: And we may ask a couple times, well, is it truly just you're running out of counter space?
- 17:26SPEAKER_05: Or is it no, the kids come in and dump their crap on the corner of the counter, they take up a third of your counter the top space.
- 17:32SPEAKER_05: That's why you're running out of it.
- 17:33SPEAKER_05: So why don't we design them a drop zone over here so they're not dropping it here, and now you gain back the counter that you already have.
- 17:39SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 17:39SPEAKER_05: That's why we asked that one.
- 17:40SPEAKER_03: Or you could have two sinks.
- 17:41SPEAKER_03: I'm sitting here, yeah.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: The kids, boy, they're real.
- 17:44SPEAKER_03: Damn kids.
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: Why do we have kids?
- 17:46SPEAKER_05: Oh my god.
- 17:47SPEAKER_03: They do, they just drop it right off at that sink.
- 17:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, see?
- 17:50SPEAKER_05: See, see?
- 17:51SPEAKER_03: Unfazed by life.
- 17:53SPEAKER_03: Seriously.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: I yeah.
- 17:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:56SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 17:57SPEAKER_05: So now we take all those ideas, all the conversations, and we start asking the technical questions.
- 18:03SPEAKER_05: Can the wall be moved if we're open at something?
- 18:05SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 18:05SPEAKER_05: Is it load bearing?
- 18:06SPEAKER_05: Where are the plumbing lines?
- 18:07SPEAKER_05: Where are the electrical lines?
- 18:09SPEAKER_05: How much space do we actually have to work with to get you what you need, right?
- 18:12SPEAKER_05: What are the structural limitations?
- 18:14SPEAKER_05: I don't really let structural limitations limit me because we'll put in beams to carry loads wherever we need to.
- 18:21SPEAKER_05: Like here at our showroom, we took and vaulted a ceiling.
- 18:24SPEAKER_05: We vaulted a ceiling on a an existing flat truss and we put in a 14-inch tall three-ply, which some people understand what I mean.
- 18:32SPEAKER_05: So it's three 14-inch tall LVLs or an inch and three-quarter, and made a massive 30-foot-long beam to carry the load of the roof, right?
- 18:40SPEAKER_05: But no one knows it's there because it's built into the ceiling.
- 18:42SPEAKER_05: You can't see it.
- 18:43SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 18:43SPEAKER_03: And I'm glad that you do I'm glad that you've said that because I do think that there's a lot of contractors, and I'm not saying Exactly that that if it is load-bearing, you know, they're like not touching it.
- 18:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 18:55SPEAKER_05: Because they don't know where to start to touch it.
- 18:57SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 18:58SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 18:58SPEAKER_05: And that's where I guess, you know, I I don't know if I said it or not, but I was a mechanical engineer in my past life.
- 19:04SPEAKER_05: I did a decade of of designing and and how things fit together and doing the drawings and and all of that and understanding loads and all that stuff.
- 19:12SPEAKER_05: I still run everything through structural engineers if we are going into load-bearing situations.
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: Well, that's good.
- 19:18SPEAKER_05: I mean, but but what the difference is, instead of me just going to a structural engineer and saying, here's the problem, I go to the structural engineer with my 30 years experience and say, here's the problem we have, but here's a solution.
- 19:30SPEAKER_05: Will the solution work in this case?
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: So you're getting a set like a validated, like I that's not the professional term, but I almost think like of course you're getting stamped like you know, like if you get a cold, okay, like you know you have a cold, but you have to go to the doctor to get things.
- 19:44SPEAKER_05: And say, hey, you got a cold.
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, just so that you know same thing.
- 19:49SPEAKER_05: Yep, exactly.
- 19:50SPEAKER_05: We're also what permits are required, what product makes sense, what possible the permit, what's possible within the existing home.
- 19:56SPEAKER_05: This is where experience becomes extremely valuable.
- 19:58SPEAKER_05: Again, I, the owner of Big Dog, have 30 years experience, plus another 10 before that as an engineer, plus all of the added up combined years of the employees that are here at Big Dog got probably 50, 60 years of experience that we're bringing, all different aspects of it, which is kind of cool, right?
- 20:17SPEAKER_03: I think so too.
- 20:18SPEAKER_05: And because a homeowner may see an empty wall, but a designer that we have here may see a possibility, right?
- 20:24SPEAKER_05: But a builder sees the structure behind that wall.
- 20:27SPEAKER_05: That's where we at Big Dog bring all that together.
- 20:29SPEAKER_03: I was just gonna say everybody plays their role.
- 20:31SPEAKER_03: Everybody plays plays the part.
- 20:33SPEAKER_05: But and that's where design and construction need to work together, and we here work together because we have them all under the same roof.
- 20:40SPEAKER_05: That's why we have that beautiful new sign.
- 20:42SPEAKER_05: If no one's seen it yet, our beautiful new sign.
- 20:44SPEAKER_03: My sign.
- 20:45SPEAKER_05: Our design studio, right?
- 20:47SPEAKER_05: It's big dog design to build design studio.
- 20:49SPEAKER_03: It is, and it's so inviting when you walk in here.
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 20:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 20:52SPEAKER_05: So with that, design and budget have to work together.
- 20:55SPEAKER_05: Now let's talk about that elephant in the room.
- 20:57SPEAKER_05: That's the money.
- 20:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 20:59SPEAKER_05: The Benjamins.
- 21:00SPEAKER_05: Make it ring.
- 21:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:01SPEAKER_05: Because you can design the most beautiful project in the world, but if it doesn't fit the homeowner's investment range, it's not a SOL, man.
- 21:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:08SPEAKER_05: And I want to emphasize that word, investment range.
- 21:11SPEAKER_05: So people need to understand when we, the contractor, comes to them with an agreement to talk about putting this project in their home, they're making an investment in their home, right?
- 21:21SPEAKER_03: It's your biggest investment.
- 21:22SPEAKER_05: They're not going out spending money on a dinner, which is going to be processed and gone.
- 21:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 21:27SPEAKER_05: Right?
- 21:28SPEAKER_05: They're investing in their home.
- 21:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 21:29SPEAKER_03: So then you need to.
- 21:30SPEAKER_03: And that's what we've been talking about this whole time.
- 21:31SPEAKER_05: They need to make sure they understand that, right?
- 21:33SPEAKER_05: So that's why we don't believe in designing something completely disconnected from reality.
- 21:37SPEAKER_05: We want to understand your investment range.
- 21:39SPEAKER_05: And a and based on the investment range, when we, the contractor, ask for a budget, we're not looking to see how much we can get out of you.
- 21:45SPEAKER_05: We're trying to make sure that what you want fits in what you have reality wise to do it.
- 21:50SPEAKER_03: Well, right.
- 21:50SPEAKER_03: And and it's a trust factor there.
- 21:52SPEAKER_03: Also, coming from another side, it's like you don't want to be putting in all of this like work and not getting paid.
- 21:59SPEAKER_05: So we We put a lot of trust when we go out to a client's house, we put a lot of trust into that we hope that we can come up with a solution for them that we stop.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: Yes, you customize it to them.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: So that's why I think that that's good that you do that.
- 22:13SPEAKER_03: Not everything's gonna you have to know their budget.
- 22:17SPEAKER_05: We do, we do.
- 22:18SPEAKER_05: And then we work toward the best solution within that range.
- 22:21SPEAKER_05: That we've got to do that.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: Right, right, right.
- 22:23SPEAKER_05: Maybe we're able to do everything, or maybe we phase the project.
- 22:26SPEAKER_05: Maybe they have annuities that come due and they, you know, they know every year they've got a chunk of money coming in.
- 22:32SPEAKER_05: So great, let's phase your project.
- 22:34SPEAKER_05: Let's get the main area, get your must-haves done.
- 22:36SPEAKER_05: And then next phase, let's get your nice things done.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: Like you do the living room at this part.
- 22:41SPEAKER_03: Okay, then we'll do the build on here in a couple months.
- 22:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 22:44SPEAKER_05: Maybe we find different material.
- 22:46SPEAKER_05: Maybe we design a part of the project, redesign a little bit.
- 22:49SPEAKER_05: And the goal isn't to spend the most money.
- 22:51SPEAKER_05: I just kind of hit on that.
- 22:52SPEAKER_05: The goal is to get the most value from your money that you're willing to invest into your home.
- 22:58SPEAKER_05: So that's the big thing on that.
- 23:00SPEAKER_05: So once the big picture is established, now we start to get into the fun stuff, which is the cabinetry, the countertops, the flooring, the lighting, the doors, the windows, the colors, the fixtures, the hardware, the finishes, all that fun shit stuff.
- 23:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, that is the fun stuff.
- 23:13SPEAKER_05: I can say shit.
- 23:13SPEAKER_05: Again, it's our podcast.
- 23:17SPEAKER_03: Get your ass in the yard.
- 23:19SPEAKER_03: Go on, get on out here.
- 23:20SPEAKER_05: So this is where your personality starts to show up in projects.
- 23:23SPEAKER_05: Your personality, Caitlin.
- 23:24SPEAKER_05: I can't imagine your house is like techno colored.
- 23:27SPEAKER_05: Anyway, it's actually here's where our team helps keep the project from becoming overwhelming.
- 23:32SPEAKER_05: Because there's a lot of law, a lot of decisions in a remodel.
- 23:36SPEAKER_05: You don't need to make all of them at once.
- 23:38SPEAKER_05: Our job is to guide you through them as we go.
- 23:41SPEAKER_05: Okay?
- 23:42SPEAKER_05: So let's put this puzzle together.
- 23:44SPEAKER_05: We've got all these components.
- 23:45SPEAKER_05: This piece, this piece, this piece.
- 23:47SPEAKER_05: Now those individual decisions become one cohesive plan.
- 23:51SPEAKER_05: Your vision, your budget, your design, your materials, your timeline, your scope, your construction requirements, all that comes together.
- 24:00SPEAKER_05: And this is the moment when a dream starts to become a reality.
- 24:04SPEAKER_03: Reality.
- 24:05SPEAKER_05: You can finally look at the plan and say, Okay, I can see it.
- 24:09SPEAKER_05: You can see it because we're producing those 3D rendering drawings for you.
- 24:13SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 24:13SPEAKER_05: We're walking, we're doing virtual walkthroughs for you on the computer, right?
- 24:17SPEAKER_05: You come into our big 65-inch screen and we'll walk you through your home.
- 24:22SPEAKER_03: I mean, that too.
- 24:22SPEAKER_03: And even if people need to see it like in their home, I'm sure you guys go in there and maybe tape off where certain things would be.
- 24:28SPEAKER_03: We have done that before.
- 24:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, because some people need to like really in their house.
- 24:32SPEAKER_03: It's not like your designer's never gonna step foot in a homeowner's home.
- 24:36SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 24:36SPEAKER_05: So and and this is where you, the client, can finally look at the plan and say, okay, I can see it.
- 24:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I got this.
- 24:44SPEAKER_05: And that's one of the best moments in our business, right?
- 24:46SPEAKER_05: Because a homeowner goes from I have no idea what to do, to now I know exactly what we're building.
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:52SPEAKER_05: And I can see it.
- 24:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:54SPEAKER_05: Because we walked them through that.
- 24:55SPEAKER_03: It's exciting, it's fun.
- 24:57SPEAKER_05: And this is where the design and construction truly connect.
- 25:00SPEAKER_05: We're not designing just to make a pretty picture.
- 25:02SPEAKER_05: We're designing something that can actually be built.
- 25:05SPEAKER_05: That means we're thinking about the materials, the measurements, the structure, the electrical, the plumbing, the HVAC, the building codes, all of that shit.
- 25:11SPEAKER_05: Literally everything, right?
- 25:13SPEAKER_05: Everything.
- 25:13SPEAKER_05: And ultimately, how everything is going to come together on the job site.
- 25:18SPEAKER_05: And that's what we mean when we say design and build and build.
- 25:22SPEAKER_05: The two words are married together, rare, right?
- 25:24SPEAKER_03: It sure is.
- 25:25SPEAKER_05: Awesome.
- 25:25SPEAKER_05: We're just not building.
- 25:26SPEAKER_05: We're not just designing.
- 25:27SPEAKER_05: We design and build and build.
- 25:29SPEAKER_05: Lockstep.
- 25:30SPEAKER_05: Together.
- 25:30SPEAKER_05: Here they are.
- 25:31SPEAKER_05: So we're not handing you a pretty drawing and saying, good luck, have fun.
- 25:35SPEAKER_05: Find a contractor to build that for you.
- 25:37SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 25:38SPEAKER_05: We're developing a plan that moves towards construction of our company.
- 25:42SPEAKER_05: That's the plan with that, right?
- 25:43SPEAKER_05: So the big dog difference.
- 25:45SPEAKER_05: This is where I believe big dog really separates itself, ourself, right?
- 25:49SPEAKER_05: I can say that.
- 25:50SPEAKER_05: We're not just asking what do you want your house to look like?
- 25:53SPEAKER_05: We're asking what do you want your life to look like inside that house.
- 25:57SPEAKER_05: Correct.
- 25:57SPEAKER_05: That's a completely different conversation because a house is a structure.
- 26:01SPEAKER_05: A home is where life happens.
- 26:04SPEAKER_05: So again, a house is a structure, but a home is where your life happens.
- 26:08SPEAKER_05: And our job is to help you connect those two things together and make you the best home you can have.
- 26:13SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 26:13SPEAKER_05: So I'm going to get into the big dog rapid fire.
- 26:16SPEAKER_05: Here we go.
- 26:16SPEAKER_05: Here it is.
- 26:17SPEAKER_05: If you're thinking about a remodel, start with these questions.
- 26:20SPEAKER_05: What isn't working in my home right now?
- 26:21SPEAKER_05: How do I want this space to function?
- 26:24SPEAKER_05: What are my must-haves?
- 26:25SPEAKER_05: What are my nice to haves?
- 26:27SPEAKER_05: What's on my dream list?
- 26:28SPEAKER_05: Because you got to have a dream, right?
- 26:29SPEAKER_05: How long do I plan to stay in my home?
- 26:31SPEAKER_05: What's my realistic investment range?
- 26:34SPEAKER_05: Your budget.
- 26:35SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 26:36SPEAKER_05: What would make this project a success?
- 26:39SPEAKER_05: As in, if it accomplished this, boom, I would consider it a success.
- 26:42SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 26:43SPEAKER_05: Don't worry about having a good thing.
- 26:44SPEAKER_03: That's an important part.
- 26:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, don't worry about having all the answers.
- 26:47SPEAKER_05: That's what the process is for.
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: It's just something to start thinking about and jotting it down because it you're it could change.
- 26:54SPEAKER_05: It could.
- 26:55SPEAKER_03: Your views could change.
- 26:56SPEAKER_05: Hence the change order episode.
- 26:58SPEAKER_05: Go back and listen to the episodes ago, right?
- 27:00SPEAKER_05: Things will change, and we have a way to make that happen.
- 27:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 27:03SPEAKER_05: So, all right, here's the big dog challenge this week.
- 27:05SPEAKER_05: Take out your phone, open your notes app, and create a note called My Dream Home.
- 27:10SPEAKER_05: That's cute.
- 27:12SPEAKER_05: Now spend 10 minutes writing down everything you've ever wanted to change about your home.
- 27:16SPEAKER_05: Just don't have your husband or your spouse there while you're doing it, right?
- 27:19SPEAKER_05: Because they're maybe on the list.
- 27:20SPEAKER_03: Not mine.
- 27:21SPEAKER_03: I love mine.
- 27:22SPEAKER_05: Don't worry about the cost.
- 27:23SPEAKER_05: Don't worry about whether it's possible.
- 27:25SPEAKER_05: Don't worry about whether it's practical.
- 27:27SPEAKER_05: Just dream.
- 27:28SPEAKER_05: Just your dream.
- 27:29SPEAKER_05: See you won the$1 billion lottery ticket.
- 27:31SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
- 27:32SPEAKER_05: Just like money's no object.
- 27:34SPEAKER_05: Cool.
- 27:34SPEAKER_05: Just just dream.
- 27:36SPEAKER_05: Then divide that list into those three categories we talked about.
- 27:39SPEAKER_05: Must-haves, would love to have, and dream.
- 27:41SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 27:42SPEAKER_05: That list becomes the beginning of your design conversation with us.
- 27:45SPEAKER_05: And you may discover something you already know more about your dream home than you thought you did.
- 27:50SPEAKER_03: And you might discover that some of your dreams can easily become a reality more than you ever thought once you divide it into those columns, guys.
- 27:58SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 27:59SPEAKER_05: You just need someone to help you turn those ideas into a plan.

- 28:20SPEAKER_05: That's why professionals exist.
