- 0:02Welcome to Bible Chat, where we have devotional conversations
- 0:06rooted in Scripture and relevant for today.
- 0:10May 29th Guard your heart. Guard your words.
- 0:13Have you ever watched a small spark turn into something much
- 0:16bigger than anyone intended? A comment that seemed harmless,
- 0:21A rumor passed along without thinking, A heated reply in a
- 0:24group chat, and suddenly something is burning that wasn't
- 0:27there before. Words have that kind of power.
- 0:31They travel fast, and they leave marks that are hard to undo.
- 0:35Proverbs chapter 16, verses 27 to 30 describes this vividly.
- 0:40A worthless person's speech is like a scorching fire.
- 0:43Perversity is planned. Evil is brought to pass through
- 0:47careless or malicious words. The imagery is intense, but if
- 0:52you've ever been on the receiving end of damaging words
- 0:55or watched a friendship get destroyed by gossip, you know
- 0:58the description is accurate. Words are not neutral.
- 1:02They carry weight, direction, and consequence.
- 1:05But here's the thing. Proverbs isn't just talking
- 1:08about obviously cruel people. The warning runs wider than
- 1:11that. It's talking about anyone who
- 1:14speaks without thinking, who passes along something damaging
- 1:17without considering the cost, who uses their words to
- 1:20manipulate or wound. That can be any of us on a bad
- 1:24day, which is why this passage calls us to guard something
- 1:28deeper than just our mouths. Psalm 61 verse 5 brings in a
- 1:33stabilizing truth for you, O God, have heard my vows.
- 1:37You have given me the heritage. Of those who fear your name,
- 1:41David is reminding himself and us that he belongs to God.
- 1:46He has a heritage, a place, a standing with the Lord.
- 1:50And when your identity is secure in that, when you know who you
- 1:53belong to and who you are, you're less likely to speak from
- 1:56a place of insecurity, fear, or bitterness.
- 2:00A lot of damaging words come from a wounded place inside us.
- 2:04We lash out because we're hurting.
- 2:05We gossip because we want to feel better by comparison.
- 2:09We say sharp things because we feel powerless.
- 2:12But when you know God hears you, when you bring your struggles to
- 2:16Him, instead of venting them sideways onto other people,
- 2:19something shifts. Ephesians chapter 4, verse 31 is
- 2:23direct and practical. Let all bitterness and wrath and
- 2:27anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with
- 2:30all malice. All of it.
- 2:33Not just the obvious stuff, but the quiet resentment, the
- 2:36passive aggression, the subtle digs disguised as jokes put it
- 2:40away. And the verse following, which
- 2:43asks you to be kind, tender hearted, and forgiving toward
- 2:47one another, makes clear that this isn't just about what you
- 2:50stop doing. It's about what you start doing
- 2:53instead. Your heart is the source.
- 2:55Whatever is filling it is what will eventually spill out
- 2:58through your words, your tone, your reactions.
- 3:02If you've been carrying frustration, fear, jealousy, or
- 3:05unresolved hurt, it will find its way into your mouth at some
- 3:09point. That's not a condemnation.
- 3:11It's just how human beings work. Which is why the real work isn't
- 3:16just about watching your words. It's about tending your heart,
- 3:20bringing what's there, all of it, to God, who can actually
- 3:23deal with it rather than just suppress it.
- 3:26Today, before you send the message, before you join the
- 3:29conversation, before you speak into a tense moment, pause.
- 3:33Check what's driving the words. And if what you find there isn't
- 3:37something you'd be comfortable bringing before God, maybe
- 3:39that's the thing to address first.
- 3:41Let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank You for
- 3:45being my refuge and the one who truly hears me.
- 3:49Help me to bring my frustrations, my hurts, and my
- 3:52anxieties to You before they spill out sideways and damage
- 3:55the people I care about. Guard my heart, Lord, because I
- 3:59know my words. Follow my heart where there is
- 4:02bitterness or resentment or anger inside me.
- 4:05Bring Your healing and help me to replace all of that with
- 4:08kindness, patience and grace. Words that build up rather than
- 4:12tear down, that spread life rather than damage.

- 5:27Proverbs Chapter 16 Verses 27 to 30 World English Bible A
- 5:32worthless man devises mischief. His speech is like a scorching
- 5:36fire. A perverse man stirs up strife.
- 5:39A whisperer separates close friends.
- 5:42A man of violence entices his neighbor and leads him in a way
- 5:45that is not good. One who winks his eyes to plot
- 5:49perversities. One who compresses his lips is
- 5:51bent on evil. Psalm Chapter 61 World English
- 5:56Bible Hear my cry God, listen to my prayer from the end of the
- 6:01earth. I will call to you when my heart
- 6:02is overwhelmed. Lead me to the rock that is
- 6:05higher than I. For you have been a refuge for
- 6:08me, a strong tower from the enemy.
- 6:11I will dwell in your tent forever.
- 6:13I will take refuge in the shelter of your wings.
- 6:15For you, God, have heard my vows.
- 6:18You have given me the heritage of.
- 6:20Those who fear your name, you will prolong the King's life.
- 6:23His years will be for generations.
- 6:26He shall be enthroned in God's presence forever.
- 6:29Appoint your loving kindness and truth that they may preserve him
- 6:33so. I will sing praise to your name
- 6:35forever, that I may fulfill my vows daily.
- 6:38Ephesians chapter 4 World English Bible.
- 6:42I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to walk worthily
- 6:45of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness
- 6:48and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in
- 6:52love, being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond
- 6:56of peace. There is one body and one
- 6:59Spirit, even as you also were called in one hope of your
- 7:02calling, 1 Lord, 1 faith, one baptism, one God and Father of
- 7:07all, who is over all and through all, and in us all.
- 7:10But to each one of us the grace was given according to the
- 7:13measure of the gift of Christ. Therefore he says, when He
- 7:17ascended on high, He led captivity captive and gave gifts
- 7:21to people. Now this he ascended.
- 7:24What is it but that He also first descended into the lower
- 7:27parts of the earth? He who descended is the one who
- 7:31also ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all
- 7:35things. He gave some to be apostles, and
- 7:38some prophets, and some evangelists, and some shepherds
- 7:42and teachers, for the perfecting of the Saints.
- 7:44To the work of serving. To the building up of the body
- 7:48of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of
- 7:52the knowledge of the Son of God. To a full grown man.
- 7:56To the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, that we
- 7:59may no longer be children tossed back and forth, and carried
- 8:03about with every wind of doctrine by the trickery of men
- 8:06in craftiness after the Wiles of error.
- 8:10But speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into
- 8:13Him who is the Head Christ, from whom all the body being fitted
- 8:18and knit together, through that which every joint supplies
- 8:21according to the working and measure of each individual part,
- 8:24makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love.
- 8:28This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you no
- 8:32longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles also walk, in the
- 8:36futility of their mind being darkened in their understanding,
- 8:40alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is
- 8:44in them, because of the hardening of their hearts, They,
- 8:48having become callous, gave themselves up to lust, to work
- 8:51all uncleanness with greediness. But you didn't learn Christ that
- 8:55way, if indeed you heard Him and were taught in Him, even as
- 8:59truth is in Jesus. That you put away as concerning
- 9:02your former way of life the old man that grows corrupt after the
- 9:07lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your
- 9:10mind, and put on the new man who in the likeness of God has been
- 9:15created in righteousness and holiness of truth, Therefore
- 9:20putting away falsehood, speak truth, each one with his
- 9:22neighbor, for we are members of one another.
- 9:26Be angry and don't sin. Don't let the sun go down on
- 9:29your wrath, and don't give place to the devil.
- 9:33Let him who stole steal no more, but rather let him labor,
- 9:36producing with his hands something that is good, that he
- 9:39may have something to give to him who has need.
- 9:43Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what
- 9:46is good for building others up, as the need may be, that it may
- 9:49give grace to those who hear. Don't grieve the Holy Spirit of
- 9:54God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
- 9:57Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry and slander be put
- 10:01away from you with all malice, and be kind to one another,
- 10:05tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in
- 10:08Christ forgave you. Thanks for joining us on Bible
