  Have you ever watched a small spark turn into something much
• 0:16
  bigger than anyone intended? A comment that seemed harmless,
• 0:21
  A rumor passed along without thinking, A heated reply in a
• 0:24
  group chat, and suddenly something is burning that wasn't
• 0:27
  there before. Words have that kind of power.
• 0:31
  They travel fast, and they leave marks that are hard to undo.
• 0:35
  Proverbs chapter 16, verses 27 to 30 describes this vividly.
• 0:40
  A worthless person's speech is like a scorching fire.
• 0:43
  Perversity is planned. Evil is brought to pass through
• 0:47
  careless or malicious words. The imagery is intense, but if
• 0:52
  you've ever been on the receiving end of damaging words
• 0:55
  or watched a friendship get destroyed by gossip, you know
• 0:58
  the description is accurate. Words are not neutral.

  They carry weight, direction, and consequence.
• 1:05
  But here's the thing. Proverbs isn't just talking
• 1:08
  about obviously cruel people. The warning runs wider than
• 1:11
  that. It's talking about anyone who
• 1:14
  speaks without thinking, who passes along something damaging
• 1:17
  without considering the cost, who uses their words to
• 1:20
  manipulate or wound. That can be any of us on a bad
• 1:24
  day, which is why this passage calls us to guard something
• 1:28
  deeper than just our mouths. Psalm 61 verse 5 brings in a
• 1:33
  stabilizing truth for you, O God, have heard my vows.
• 1:37
  You have given me the heritage. Of those who fear your name,
• 1:41
  David is reminding himself and us that he belongs to God.
• 1:46
  He has a heritage, a place, a standing with the Lord.
• 1:50
  And when your identity is secure in that, when you know who you
• 1:53
  belong to and who you are, you're less likely to speak from
• 1:56
  a place of insecurity, fear, or bitterness.

  A lot of damaging words come from a wounded place inside us.
• 2:04
  We lash out because we're hurting.
• 2:05
  We gossip because we want to feel better by comparison.
• 2:09
  We say sharp things because we feel powerless.
• 2:12
  But when you know God hears you, when you bring your struggles to
• 2:16
  Him, instead of venting them sideways onto other people,
• 2:19
  something shifts. Ephesians chapter 4, verse 31 is
• 2:23
  direct and practical. Let all bitterness and wrath and
• 2:27
  anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with
• 2:30
  all malice. All of it.
• 2:33
  Not just the obvious stuff, but the quiet resentment, the
• 2:36
  passive aggression, the subtle digs disguised as jokes put it
• 2:40
  away. And the verse following, which
• 2:43
  asks you to be kind, tender hearted, and forgiving toward
• 2:47
  one another, makes clear that this isn't just about what you
• 2:50
  stop doing. It's about what you start doing
• 2:53
  instead. Your heart is the source.
• 2:55
  Whatever is filling it is what will eventually spill out
• 2:58
  through your words, your tone, your reactions.

  If you've been carrying frustration, fear, jealousy, or
• 3:05
  unresolved hurt, it will find its way into your mouth at some
• 3:09
  point. That's not a condemnation.
• 3:11
  It's just how human beings work. Which is why the real work isn't
• 3:16
  just about watching your words. It's about tending your heart,
• 3:20
  bringing what's there, all of it, to God, who can actually
• 3:23
  deal with it rather than just suppress it.
• 3:26
  Today, before you send the message, before you join the
• 3:29
  conversation, before you speak into a tense moment, pause.
• 3:33
  Check what's driving the words. And if what you find there isn't
• 3:37
  something you'd be comfortable bringing before God, maybe
• 3:39
  that's the thing to address first.
• 3:41
  Let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank You for
• 3:45
  being my refuge and the one who truly hears me.
• 3:49
  Help me to bring my frustrations, my hurts, and my
• 3:52
  anxieties to You before they spill out sideways and damage
• 3:55
  the people I care about. Guard my heart, Lord, because I
• 3:59
  know my words. Follow my heart where there is
• 4:02
  bitterness or resentment or anger inside me.
• 4:05
  Bring Your healing and help me to replace all of that with
• 4:08
  kindness, patience and grace. Words that build up rather than
• 4:12
  tear down, that spread life rather than damage.
• 4:15
