- 0:09Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to The Right Time, a Wave
- 0:12Speaker 2: original presented by FanDuel Predicts. My name is Bomani Jones.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Thanks for listening wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for

- 0:22Speaker 2: give us five stars. You only give us four stars.
- 0:24Speaker 2: I'm inclined to believe you are a hater. It is
- 0:27Speaker 2: that time of week where we have a.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Guest join us on the show. You know what I'm saying?
- 0:34Speaker 2: A guest who has a framed jersey behind him just
- 0:38Speaker 2: because the dude shares his last name.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Check him out on Ring of Tale.
- 0:41Speaker 2: It's still such a ridiculous thing to do.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Check him out on Ring of Tale, Kate. Joel Anderson,
- 0:45Speaker 1: what's going on?
- 0:46Speaker 3: Do you think I need to get the Will Anderson
- 0:48Speaker 3: jersey then? Because that is a little bit more Houston.
- 0:50Speaker 2: No, I think you like I went to high school
- 0:52Speaker 2: with a dude named Ray Cunningham. He was a white dude,
- 0:54Speaker 2: but he had in green and in white the Randall
- 0:57Speaker 2: Cunningham jerseys with R.Cunningham on it.
- 1:00Speaker 1: And it's like.
- 1:01Speaker 3: I respect it.
- 1:02Speaker 2: This ain't the flex you think it is.
- 1:03Speaker 3: A white man up in Waller wearing a Cunningham jersey?
- 1:07Speaker 1: By the way, aren't you going to do your little thing?
- 1:10Speaker 3: What's my little thing? You know, where you go like that.
- 1:14Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying? I saved that for Wednesday.
- 1:17Speaker 3: When we record our show, the ring of tailgate You know,
- 1:21Speaker 3: I saved the race.
- 1:21Speaker 1: But we can do it here.
- 1:22Speaker 2: If you do it, are you going to do it
- 1:24Speaker 2: with me?
- 1:25Speaker 1: Of course not. But it's Wednesday while people are watching
- 1:27Speaker 1: it now.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Come on, man. Come on, just do it.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Nah, nah.
- 1:31Speaker 2: That's kind of like what Pablo tried to get me
- 1:32Speaker 2: to do some Pokemon Dragon Ball Z shit one time.
- 1:35Speaker 3: That's not the same thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah. First of all,
- 1:39Speaker 3: I don't even know. I've never seen Dragon Ball Z
- 1:41Speaker 3: or any of that shit.
- 1:42Speaker 1: It's not terribly different. It's not terribly different. But let
- 1:44Speaker 1: me ask you this. I want to ask you this.
- 1:46Speaker 2: On the heels of what Victor Wimbanyama did Monday night, right?
- 1:51Speaker 2: Can you think of a time that you knew that
- 1:54Speaker 2: you were watching the future?
- 1:57Speaker 3: So, I mean, I feel like the obvious answer is
- 2:00Speaker 3: Braun here, right? Well, I was like, oh, this is
- 2:03Speaker 3: going to be this guy's league for the rest of time.
- 2:07Speaker 3: So what was the game where he scored.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Like 29 or 30 points? Against the Pistons, yeah.
- 2:10Speaker 3: But I was actually thinking, I wanted to go a
- 2:12Speaker 3: little bit deeper than that. And you know what I
- 2:14Speaker 3: was thinking about? Allen Iverson. When I saw Allen Iverson
- 2:18Speaker 3: play Not just at Georgetown, but when he crossed up MJ.
- 2:23Speaker 1: He joined and put him on the ground.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Yeah, put him on the ground. And I was like, man,
- 2:27Speaker 3: that was really influential. People just don't remember. At the
- 2:32Speaker 3: time when Allen Iverson broke into the NBA, dudes didn't
- 2:35Speaker 3: have tattoos like that then. Dennis Rodman was sort of
- 2:37Speaker 3: like the irregular.
- 2:39Speaker 1: But that was different.
- 2:41Speaker 3: His was different. Yeah.
- 2:42Speaker 2: They didn't have the same kind of tattoo. It was
- 2:44Speaker 2: a different sort of appeal. It's like me and Goff
- 2:45Speaker 2: talked about, right? That Dennis Rodman was doing white boy stuff.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Yes. And was valued. Allen Iverson had what they call
- 2:53Speaker 1: jailhouse tattoos.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Like he came along. Again, I felt
- 2:57Speaker 3: like it's for people that grew up in our age.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Tupac and Allen Iverson convinced a lot of people to
- 3:04Speaker 3: get a lot of tattoos. And that just was something
- 3:06Speaker 3: that we did not do a lot of at the time.
- 3:08Speaker 3: And then the way he hooped, like I felt like
- 3:10Speaker 3: there were a lot of guys, you know, Steve Francis
- 3:13Speaker 3: and so on and so on. Guys that like were,
- 3:16Speaker 3: you know, short shooting guards. They weren't particularly efficient, but
- 3:21Speaker 3: they could dribble their ass off. They were quick as hell.
- 3:24Speaker 3: And they could get around. And they didn't necessarily have
- 3:26Speaker 3: to play the boring point guard way of playing ball.
- 3:29Speaker 3: It was just a different way of playing ball. So
- 3:30Speaker 3: that's what I thought of. But it wasn't like what
- 3:35Speaker 3: Wimby is, which is like, oh, no, this guy's actually
- 3:37Speaker 3: going to own basketball for the next generation.
- 3:40Speaker 2: So I got two thoughts on that. My thought was
- 3:42Speaker 2: a little different, and I'm curious. I think you'll still
- 3:45Speaker 2: have an answer for it. I'm curious what your thing is.
- 3:47Speaker 2: But first, the real future with Iverson was not simply that.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Crossover he put on Mike.
- 3:52Speaker 2: It was the post-game comments that I think were largely misinterpreted,
- 3:57Speaker 2: but still where he was like, I ain't got to
- 3:58Speaker 2: respect nobody.
- 4:00Speaker 1: That was the future, right?
- 4:02Speaker 2: Like that was, this was a much different person than
- 4:04Speaker 2: Michael Jordan is what that was.
- 4:07Speaker 1: But I mean the future in this sense. So I'll
- 4:09Speaker 1: give you an example.
- 4:11Speaker 2: LeBron, like LeBron in 07 was, yes, the league is
- 4:15Speaker 2: going to belong to this person, right?
- 4:18Speaker 1: Randy Moss, Monday night football against the Packers. There has
- 4:24Speaker 1: been a full-on evolution of the form of what we're
- 4:28Speaker 1: talking about. You know what I mean? Another example.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Whatever was the first time you saw Usain Bolt, for me,
- 4:34Speaker 2: it was the gold medal final in 08.
- 4:36Speaker 3: I was just about to say Usain Bolt.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Right, so I don't.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Mean like this is the future of what basketball is
- 4:42Speaker 2: going to be or this guy is the best.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I mean, it looks like this motherfucker came from the future.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Oh, well, you know what?
- 4:50Speaker 2: Forget about from space. It looked like he came from
- 4:53Speaker 2: another time.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Oh, bro, so I think the Usain Bolt is a
- 4:58Speaker 3: great one because also it like really shifted the idea
- 5:00Speaker 3: of what a sprinter could look like because Usain Bolt's
- 5:03Speaker 3: frame is, was perfect for like 200, 400. And I
- 5:07Speaker 3: think that they initially, when he started running track, they
- 5:09Speaker 3: wanted him to be more of a 400 guy.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Yeah, the plan was to move him up to four,
- 5:13Speaker 1: not down to one.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Right. And then they're just like, oh no, he actually
- 5:16Speaker 3: can do it this way. But you know another guy
- 5:18Speaker 3: that I think doesn't get enough credit for like totally
- 5:22Speaker 3: shifting the paradigm of a sport and they're just like,
- 5:24Speaker 3: oh no, you can't. This Evander Holyfield shit's not going
- 5:26Speaker 3: to work. This Mike Tyson shit's not going to work.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Lennox Lewis. like the big, like the six foot four,
- 5:33Speaker 3: six foot five heavyweight 250, like super heavyweight dudes that
- 5:38Speaker 3: just like, oh, it's like, oh, like you're not going
- 5:39Speaker 3: to be able to be a cruiserweight and fight at
- 5:41Speaker 3: the heavyweight level anymore. Like you can't be five, like
- 5:44Speaker 3: Burt Cooper. I don't know if people are like the
- 5:47Speaker 3: smoking Joe Frazier, like a five, 11, six foot heavyweight.
- 5:50Speaker 3: And I was like, oh no, when Lennox Lewis put
- 5:53Speaker 3: Mike Tyson on his back, I was like, oh, Mike
- 5:57Speaker 3: can't fuck with him. He can't get inside. He doesn't
- 5:59Speaker 3: have enough power. It's just not it. But anyway, I
- 6:01Speaker 3: don't know. Maybe that's not enough. Well, no, no.
- 6:03Speaker 1: I think there's something to that, right? I'll give you
- 6:06Speaker 1: another example.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Okay.
- 6:08Speaker 1: A lot of us remember this.
- 6:09Speaker 2: You got to remember, not every football game, even as
- 6:11Speaker 2: recently as 20-something years ago, was readily available on TV, right?
- 6:16Speaker 1: You couldn't have so much cable.
- 6:18Speaker 2: And the Sugar Bowl in January of 2000, I would
- 6:23Speaker 2: say for the vast majority of America... was the first
- 6:26Speaker 2: time they had watched Michael Vick play. They had heard
- 6:29Speaker 2: about Michael Vick, but we had not seen him play.
- 6:33Speaker 2: That dude made two cats tear their ACLs.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Hold on. Against the fastest team on earth.
- 6:40Speaker 3: Well, that's the thing. Nobody had ever seen anybody be
- 6:44Speaker 3: faster than Florida State before. Not even Miami. When Miami
- 6:48Speaker 3: and Florida State were rolling, those were the consensus two
- 6:51Speaker 3: fastest teams in the country. And Michael Vick was the
- 6:54Speaker 3: only dude where I was like, oh, man, they're having
- 6:56Speaker 3: trouble catching up to this guy. Like that. And so, yeah,
- 6:59Speaker 3: that was also kind of don't you. Do you feel
- 7:02Speaker 3: like Vince Young kind of was a part of that
- 7:04Speaker 3: as well, too?
- 7:05Speaker 1: Dude, I always felt the thing with Vince.
- 7:07Speaker 2: It felt like Vince started going and everybody started stopping.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Right.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Like I as impressive as I found Vince. I mean,
- 7:14Speaker 1: there he is right there on the wall here.
- 7:17Speaker 2: But I did not view him as it is so
- 7:20Speaker 2: clear he is the best athlete out here. I felt
- 7:24Speaker 2: more like it is very clear he is the best
- 7:26Speaker 2: player out here, right? Like it was, to me, it
- 7:29Speaker 2: was all, like he looked to me like a guy
- 7:31Speaker 2: where it's like the testing isn't going to explain to
- 7:33Speaker 2: you what's going on here, which is not the Michael
- 7:36Speaker 2: Vick case.
- 7:36Speaker 1: The testing was going to be very clear what was
- 7:39Speaker 1: going on.
- 7:39Speaker 2: And with Victor, it was just like, but I guess
- 7:42Speaker 2: my larger point of where I bring it up is just,
- 7:44Speaker 2: there's something special about that moment where you watch something
- 7:48Speaker 2: and you're just like, like that game where Moss had
- 7:50Speaker 2: against the Vikings on Monday night football.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Was it like, was it, or is it the Cowboys? Right.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Was it three? No, no.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Cowboys is on Thanksgiving.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Okay.
- 7:57Speaker 2: That was the, like he did it to, he did
- 7:59Speaker 2: it all year long. There were these moments, but it
- 8:01Speaker 2: was like the third or fourth game of the year.
- 8:04Speaker 2: They played a night game at Lambeau field. And that
- 8:08Speaker 2: was the, Oh, this is a thing.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Right yep yep yep that's right that's right it's like
- 8:13Speaker 3: oh like this is actually going to translate these guys
- 8:15Speaker 3: have never seen anybody like this before it looked like
- 8:18Speaker 3: it did at marshall yeah right it was like i
- 8:21Speaker 3: mean again the cowboys game was crazy because you see
- 8:24Speaker 3: the stat line i think it was like three receptions
- 8:25Speaker 3: for 168 yards and like three touchdowns yes and it
- 8:29Speaker 3: was like nobody's supposed to come into the nfl and
- 8:31Speaker 3: do that like that and like chris carter was he's
- 8:35Speaker 3: a Hall of Fame NFL receiver. Like he was great.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Like my entire life. All he does is catch touchdowns.
- 8:41Speaker 3: That was the Chris Carter thing. And as soon as
- 8:43Speaker 3: Randy Moss got there, it was like, Oh no, that's, that's, that's,
- 8:46Speaker 3: that's receiver one right there.
- 8:48Speaker 1: You know, I saw Adam Schefter. He made the comp.
- 8:51Speaker 1: I was thinking of like, what was it like watching
- 8:53Speaker 1: victory women?
- 8:53Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, he was like the closest he could
- 8:55Speaker 2: think of was Ricky or Randy Moss. and what they
- 8:57Speaker 2: have in common is, just chuck it up there, dog.
- 9:01Speaker 2: The Spurs is like when the first video games came
- 9:06Speaker 2: out with the alley-oop and all you did was throw alley-oops.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Yeah, man. You see if you agree with me on this.
- 9:13Speaker 3: It was the first time maybe since Shaq against Dikembe
- 9:19Speaker 3: Mutombo in the 2001 finals. I was like, oh, I
- 9:21Speaker 3: feel sorry for everybody else out here. You know what
- 9:24Speaker 3: I'm saying? It's like, it must be so frustrating because
- 9:26Speaker 3: he barely even has to jump. It was just like,
- 9:29Speaker 3: it was like, he took over the game. Like sometimes,
- 9:32Speaker 3: you know, eighth grader would come down and nobody else
- 9:35Speaker 3: out there to play. And they play with the sixth
- 9:36Speaker 3: and seventh graders. And it was like, Oh no, this
- 9:38Speaker 3: guy is just bigger and better than everybody. And there's
- 9:41Speaker 3: nothing they can do about it, man.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Yes.
- 9:43Speaker 3: That was, that was shocking to me because again, it's
- 9:46Speaker 3: not like Oklahoma state played bad and they have a
- 9:49Speaker 3: knack for making everybody look bad. And like, make every
- 9:52Speaker 3: shot look fresh, very difficult, rush people, they have to
- 9:56Speaker 3: guard the handle in a certain way, and none of
- 9:58Speaker 3: that mattered. i was i think i i realized when
- 10:02Speaker 3: the spurs were up by like eight like in the
- 10:04Speaker 3: fourth quarter i was like oh shit they might actually
- 10:06Speaker 3: do this yeah and that's the thing that's like that's
- 10:09Speaker 3: what should be scary to the thunder it's like oh
- 10:11Speaker 3: like when being y'all came out to dominate y'all i'm
- 10:14Speaker 3: sure that like they spent their whole game plan like
- 10:16Speaker 3: how are we gonna slow him down how are we
- 10:18Speaker 3: gonna make it difficult for him And he goes out
- 10:20Speaker 3: there and puts up, what, 41-24 on them there?
- 10:22Speaker 1: Yes.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Hey, that boy Ryan. And only had three blocks because
- 10:26Speaker 2: they wasn't allowing it to happen.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Yeah, man.
- 10:28Speaker 2: That boy Ryan made a very good point. He was like,
- 10:30Speaker 2: the price of that Giannis brick just went through the roof.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Because if you try to keep up, you got to
- 10:34Speaker 2: do something.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Man, I mean.
- 10:37Speaker 1: You got to do something.
- 10:38Speaker 3: I mean, you don't think this means it's over for
- 10:40Speaker 3: the Thunder yet, though, right? Like, you still think that
- 10:43Speaker 3: they have a shot to win this series?
- 10:44Speaker 1: Yes. Yes. Yes. But they better win the next game. Yeah.
- 10:51Speaker 1: And they lose game two. It's over.
- 10:54Speaker 3: I can't.
- 10:54Speaker 1: I can't.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Look, there was a point during the game. My man
- 10:58Speaker 2: Clarence sent me this stat. There was a point during
- 11:01Speaker 2: the game where with Victor on the floor, the Thunder
- 11:07Speaker 2: was shooting 10 for 50. Oh, man.
- 11:08Speaker 1: 10 for 50.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Man.
- 11:10Speaker 4: 20% in an NBA game.
- 11:23Speaker 3: And there's just no way you can get around that.
- 11:25Speaker 3: That's the thing. Offense comes and goes. You can figure
- 11:29Speaker 3: out a way to slow Wimpy. You can make him
- 11:32Speaker 3: come up off the ball earlier, whatever. But you're going
- 11:35Speaker 3: to always have to deal with him on that end
- 11:37Speaker 3: of the floor. And if he is engaged and he
- 11:40Speaker 3: is healthy, ain't really shit you can do about it. No, no, no.
- 11:44Speaker 1: And they got other dudes that's good too.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Yeah. That's the thing. that actually kind of pisses me off, man. Like, man,
- 11:51Speaker 3: as a Rockets fan, man, we should have had Stephon Castile, man.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Y'all took Reed, right?
- 11:57Speaker 3: We took Reed, man. We took Reed. We could have
- 11:59Speaker 3: had Stephon. Like, that's the thing. You just can't let
- 12:02Speaker 3: your rival get that guy, right?
- 12:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:05Speaker 3: You can't let the team in your division. Like, you
- 12:06Speaker 3: already missed on Wimby, which I think is some bullshit
- 12:09Speaker 3: because that year, the year that Wimby came out into
- 12:12Speaker 3: the draft, they had the same draft odds as the
- 12:14Speaker 3: Spurs and the, what was it? Was it the Pistons too?
- 12:18Speaker 3: I think it was the Pistons.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:20Speaker 3: They had the same draft odds as the Spurs and
- 12:22Speaker 3: the Pistons. And we ended up with Armin Thompson, a
- 12:25Speaker 3: great player. Like, I love having Armin Thompson. That's amazing.
- 12:29Speaker 3: He might be the second best player in that draft.
- 12:31Speaker 3: But get the fuck out of here, bro. You know
- 12:35Speaker 3: what I'm saying? As soon as they got Wimby Yama,
- 12:39Speaker 3: I was like, oh, man. Like, that's, it's not.
- 12:43Speaker 1: The last thing I'll say on this. watching his teammates.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Yeah, man.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Just be like, I can't believe we get to do this.
- 12:51Speaker 3: Can you believe De'Aaron Fox is like, man, I used
- 12:53Speaker 3: to have to My big man was DeMontis Sabonis, man. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Like, I think Fox played enough NBA basketball in other
- 13:02Speaker 2: places that he fully appreciates what it is. Like, just
- 13:08Speaker 2: the look on his face on the sideline when Victor
- 13:11Speaker 2: came over and stood up in front of them motherfuckers
- 13:13Speaker 2: like Captain Morgan, and they was like, yeah, dog!
- 13:17Speaker 3: Get into it. Get into it, man. I, um... Yeah, man, I...
- 13:22Speaker 3: You know, I think the Thunder still have a chance.
- 13:25Speaker 3: I still thought, and I watched your little clip. You
- 13:29Speaker 3: recorded late last night. No wonder you weren't responding to
- 13:31Speaker 3: texts last night.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:33Speaker 3: You recorded as soon as the game was over, huh?
- 13:35Speaker 1: Oh, no, no. We recorded that this morning.
- 13:37Speaker 2: But no, I was trying so hard to stay awake,
- 13:40Speaker 2: and I had so many people texting me.
- 13:42Speaker 1: It was just, it was really tough. You had to
- 13:44Speaker 1: get up. And I keep all group chats on silent
- 13:48Speaker 1: because they can get unwieldy.
- 13:49Speaker 3: I got you, got you, got you, got you.
- 13:50Speaker 1: You know what I mean? So you got it. Oh,
- 13:51Speaker 1: my God. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Like this was this this this was this was I
- 13:56Speaker 2: don't remember the last time that everybody got to join
- 13:58Speaker 2: in this together.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Like this was we were all on the same team
- 14:01Speaker 2: of I can't believe this.
- 14:03Speaker 3: Just high quality ball, which is I mean, I'm so
- 14:06Speaker 3: glad because I was staying up late watching that terrible
- 14:10Speaker 3: that that had to have been one of the worst
- 14:13Speaker 3: round twos in recent NBA history.
- 14:15Speaker 4: Right.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Yes.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Like, I mean, there was barely any competitive series. And
- 14:20Speaker 3: the one series that we didn't care if it went
- 14:22Speaker 3: seven games went seven games. Correct. You know? And so
- 14:25Speaker 3: it was like, oh, man, that was terrible. But now
- 14:27Speaker 3: we finally got to the series. I think everybody thinks
- 14:31Speaker 3: this is going to be the finals. I think that's
- 14:32Speaker 3: maybe playing the Knicks a little bit short. But, yeah,
- 14:35Speaker 3: I mean, like, I'm just glad that that game was everything.
- 14:38Speaker 3: That happened. I'm trying to think of the last time
- 14:40Speaker 3: I enjoyed an NBA game that much, too.
- 14:43Speaker 1: It was a moment. It's one that we'll talk about
- 14:44Speaker 1: for a very long time.
- 14:46Speaker 2: This is, to me, the most memorable game since 2016
- 14:50Speaker 2: Game 7 NBA Finals. Wow.
- 14:53Speaker 3: Wow. Is that right?
- 14:55Speaker 1: I mean, pull one for me.
- 14:57Speaker 3: Man, I was trying to think. Was there anything from
- 14:59Speaker 3: the Steph run in 2022? Maybe the Giannis... Game six
- 15:03Speaker 3: versus the Suns.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Yeah, but the totality of this game.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right. The build-up, the rivalry, these teams actually
- 15:12Speaker 3: hate each other.
- 15:12Speaker 1: It was a lot. And it lived up to expectations.
- 15:15Speaker 1: It did. I tell you this, though. Ryan sent a text.
- 15:18Speaker 1: He's right.
- 15:19Speaker 2: He is single-handedly killing the French coward stereotypes.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Right? Because they go.
- 15:23Speaker 2: The thing we need to talk about later is they
- 15:25Speaker 2: going to win the 2028 Olympics at our crib.
- 15:27Speaker 1: And he going to be out here talking shit. He
- 15:29Speaker 1: might even wipe his ass with the flag.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Damn.
- 15:32Speaker 2: I mean, don't forget he tasted blood in Paris in 24.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Like that's like, we need to be, we need to
- 15:39Speaker 2: be afraid of that.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Number one.
- 15:40Speaker 2: And number two is he, he may be killing the
- 15:43Speaker 2: French coward stereotypes, but we got to wait to see
- 15:46Speaker 2: what he does to the spur stereotypes.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Try to highlight somebody girl.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Oh, man. Why are you being that way, man?
- 15:56Speaker 1: What do you mean?
- 15:56Speaker 3: Come on, man. You know what it is?
- 15:59Speaker 2: I'm surprised the Spurs went and got another French dude.
- 16:03Speaker 2: But I guess this one was too good to pass up.
- 16:05Speaker 2: They was like, you remember the end of Juvenile on Fire?
- 16:08Speaker 3: Yes.
- 16:10Speaker 1: That's what they was saying about Victor.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Come on, man. I mean, because, wait, I don't know
- 16:15Speaker 3: the whole story about that thing, too. This is TP
- 16:19Speaker 3: and BB, right?
- 16:20Speaker 1: Yes.
- 16:21Speaker 3: Okay.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Okay. Yes, which sounds like you're talking about toilet paper
- 16:24Speaker 2: and boo-boo, but you're not.
- 16:25Speaker 3: I'm not talking about toilet paper and boo-boo, no. Because
- 16:28Speaker 3: I'm trying to give us the plausible deniability here.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll put it to you like this. I just
- 16:33Speaker 1: ran the search on Google, and it came up in
- 16:35Speaker 1: the AI overview.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Man, that's tough, man. I mean, that's how the world is.
- 16:40Speaker 3: But look, man.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Yeah, hey, man, I got a colleague that's going to
- 16:42Speaker 1: be living like that forever.
- 16:44Speaker 3: A colleague like that?
- 16:47Speaker 1: Boy, you read the news.
- 16:48Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. Oh, man.
- 16:51Speaker 3: Yeah, bro. That's a tough one. That's a tough one.
- 16:54Speaker 3: That's a tough one.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Nowhere to go.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Nowhere to go. I got to throw that. You got
- 16:58Speaker 3: to take that hot potato back.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Wimpy don't really seem like he into the... I don't
- 17:03Speaker 3: know how to explain it.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Hey, hey, hey.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Never know, partner.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Never know.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Never know. But again, it's going to be like, hey, man,
- 17:09Speaker 1: you know, got to pay tribute. Tribute to the king.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Tribute to the king. Can't have them all. I want
- 17:15Speaker 1: to run something by you.
- 17:15Speaker 2: I don't know if you've seen this, but the NAACP,
- 17:19Speaker 2: put out a statement, I believe, today, and they are
- 17:22Speaker 2: urging Black athletes and fans to, quote, withhold athletic and
- 17:25Speaker 2: financial support for public universities and states that have, quote,
- 17:29Speaker 2: moved to limit, weaken, or erase Black voting representation. That's
- 17:32Speaker 2: Philip Lewis who sent the tweet and did that encapsulation. Coincidentally,
- 17:36Speaker 2: Joel had come on here because I had said on
- 17:38Speaker 2: Stephen Godfrey's I mean, it's dangerous to talk like this,
- 17:41Speaker 2: which white homies, but the argument against the boycotting of
- 17:45Speaker 2: these programs in the face of the political situation.
- 17:48Speaker 1: I know you disagree. I'm curious your angle. I don't.
- 17:54Speaker 3: But first of all, this is something I've only been
- 17:55Speaker 3: calling for for like the last decade, by the way.
- 17:57Speaker 1: If I say this is very true.
- 17:59Speaker 3: Yeah. Like I've been talking about this since forever. It
- 18:01Speaker 3: didn't just start with the Voting Rights Act. The thing is,
- 18:04Speaker 3: is I get what Stephen is saying. And I respect Stephen, man,
- 18:07Speaker 3: on this because he talked first, he talked about race
- 18:09Speaker 3: like a for a white boy to talk about race
- 18:12Speaker 3: in which the way he does like i just respect
- 18:14Speaker 3: it you know what i'm saying like he's not afraid
- 18:16Speaker 3: and he's very agile with it but the thing that
- 18:18Speaker 3: i think about this is that first of all it
- 18:23Speaker 3: is a community like if you live as a part
- 18:25Speaker 3: of a community bro like sometimes people do have to
- 18:27Speaker 3: some people are going to ask you to do things
- 18:29Speaker 3: that may be difficult right or they may seem difficult
- 18:32Speaker 3: right it's like hey look man just don't go you
- 18:35Speaker 3: you just can't go to University of Georgia. Like that's
- 18:37Speaker 3: all we're saying. It doesn't mean that USC is not
- 18:39Speaker 3: available to you. It doesn't mean that Michigan and Ohio
- 18:41Speaker 3: State are not available to you. We're just asking you
- 18:43Speaker 3: not to go here. And I don't think that's that
- 18:45Speaker 3: much of an ask. And really you're not asking it
- 18:48Speaker 3: of players. You're asking it of their parents or the
- 18:50Speaker 3: people that, I guess, handlers for lack of a better term.
- 18:54Speaker 3: The second part of this is that I don't think
- 18:56Speaker 3: it's going to require hundreds and hundreds of kids to
- 18:59Speaker 3: do it. I think it only takes about a handful
- 19:01Speaker 3: of kids to put a hurt on somebody and they
- 19:03Speaker 3: can make a point. And it may not, look, the
- 19:06Speaker 3: Voting Rights Act is dead for, in all intents and purposes,
- 19:10Speaker 3: for the rest of our life. Like, I don't think
- 19:11Speaker 3: we're going to see it restored before, you know, we're
- 19:14Speaker 3: out of here. But the ball has to start rolling now, right? Like,
- 19:18Speaker 3: this is like the movement, it's just like the Civil
- 19:22Speaker 3: Rights Act did not start in the, the Civil Rights
- 19:25Speaker 3: Movement didn't start in the 1960s. It started as black
- 19:27Speaker 3: folks were losing their rights in the middle of the
- 19:29Speaker 3: redemption or whatever, right? And so this is the same thing, bro. Like,
- 19:32Speaker 3: I just think that like it's just part.
- 19:33Speaker 4: Of a movement.
- 19:34Speaker 3: You're not asking 20 kids, 50 kids or just asking
- 19:39Speaker 3: a handful of the most desired kids in this country
- 19:43Speaker 3: to say, you know what? I don't want to go
- 19:45Speaker 3: down there because I don't think that state respects my
- 19:48Speaker 3: people or its rights. And I don't want to go
- 19:51Speaker 3: someplace where when I'm done playing football, if I move
- 19:54Speaker 3: back there, I'm not sure if my voter count, I'm
- 19:57Speaker 3: not sure if it'll be legal to discriminate me to
- 19:59Speaker 3: get a job or my family to get a job.
- 20:03Speaker 3: I want my people to be treated fairly. And so
- 20:05Speaker 3: I'm going to go to a state where at least
- 20:07Speaker 3: for now, it's not explicitly written into law. You're not
- 20:12Speaker 3: seeing California trying to rip up, well, they are trying
- 20:16Speaker 3: to rip up their districts, but for favors of the
- 20:19Speaker 3: Democratic Party. So I just, I don't know, man. I
- 20:22Speaker 3: don't think it would have to hurt that much to
- 20:24Speaker 3: do that. And I think it's fair to ask those
- 20:26Speaker 3: kids to do it. They're 18 years old. It's okay.
- 20:28Speaker 2: Yeah, my issue is exactly what you just said right there.
- 20:32Speaker 2: I don't like when people tell other people what they
- 20:34Speaker 2: should do. When the standpoint, when it is not a-
- 20:37Speaker 2: We've always done that.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Hold on, hold on. I don't I didn't say what
- 20:40Speaker 1: we always did. I said what I don't like.
- 20:42Speaker 3: OK.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Right.
- 20:43Speaker 1: If it's a here's what we bought to do.
- 20:47Speaker 2: I am inclined to listen a little bit more than
- 20:50Speaker 2: here is what you going to do. Largely in what
- 20:54Speaker 2: I feel it comes from a segment of older people
- 20:58Speaker 2: who have not demonstrated to me their willingness to do
- 21:01Speaker 2: something similar. I'm kind of like, I don't know. My
- 21:07Speaker 2: other thing is the number two, and it's the big one. So,
- 21:09Speaker 2: for example, you decide you're not going to go play
- 21:12Speaker 2: for those schools. Instead, I will go to a state
- 21:15Speaker 2: that respects my people, Oregon.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Well, you know, in fact, they do.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Not respect you in this way. The places that you go...
- 21:29Speaker 2: I have questions about whether or not they actually have
- 21:32Speaker 2: any more respect for you than where, where it is
- 21:35Speaker 2: that you're ultimately going to wind up.
- 21:37Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 21:38Speaker 2: So like, it's not as if for me, it's not
- 21:40Speaker 2: even like, I don't get why you would decide you're
- 21:42Speaker 2: not going to do that. And if you decide you're
- 21:44Speaker 2: not going to do that, that's cool. And I'd go
- 21:46Speaker 2: with it. I just don't, I, I have issues with
- 21:50Speaker 2: people whose first move on what to do in a
- 21:52Speaker 2: moment like this is to tell somebody else the changes
- 21:55Speaker 2: that they should make.
- 21:56Speaker 1: While they just going to watch and cheer them all.
- 21:58Speaker 1: That's my thing.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Now, what I find about this particular issue that I
- 22:01Speaker 2: think is more interesting, what the NAACP is saying, they're like, yeah,
- 22:04Speaker 2: and also, let's not watch this stuff. Because the truth is,
- 22:08Speaker 2: you and I and doing our jobs could be like,
- 22:10Speaker 2: you know what? We're not going to talk about SEC football.
- 22:13Speaker 2: We're not going to give it any oxygen. But we're
- 22:15Speaker 2: not going to do that. We're going to tell these
- 22:16Speaker 2: boys to not go there, and then we're going to
- 22:18Speaker 2: still go over there and talk about it, because we
- 22:20Speaker 2: don't want to fuck up our money.
- 22:21Speaker 1: You see what I mean?
- 22:22Speaker 2: That's where I'm like, I don't feel comfortable with the
- 22:28Speaker 2: calls coming if they're not coming in a particular way
- 22:31Speaker 2: or from a particular set of people.
- 22:33Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I just, I don't find that to
- 22:35Speaker 3: be analogous because I feel, you know, it's not like we're,
- 22:40Speaker 3: this is not a conversation that anybody at the SEC
- 22:43Speaker 3: is excited for us to have right now. They don't
- 22:45Speaker 3: want us to draw attention to that. They would prefer
- 22:47Speaker 3: that this be a thing that goes away. This is
- 22:49Speaker 3: us playing our part in the fight. for expanding voting
- 22:52Speaker 3: rights in that state again. And again, look, when I
- 22:55Speaker 3: was a kid, when you were a kid, they were regularly,
- 22:58Speaker 3: and I remember when I went up to Missouri in
- 23:00Speaker 3: 2015 when those kids boycotted that school, and I talked
- 23:04Speaker 3: to some old black DJs and journalists that were like,
- 23:06Speaker 3: we were always telling kids, man, don't take your ass
- 23:09Speaker 3: up to the Missouri. They don't respect you. Even go
- 23:12Speaker 3: to Illinois.
- 23:12Speaker 4: Okay.
- 23:14Speaker 3: But do not go to Mizzou. That has always been
- 23:16Speaker 3: a part of black culture. The reason that the University
- 23:19Speaker 3: of Texas and Ole Miss, part of the reason that
- 23:21Speaker 3: they never tapped in and lived up to the potential
- 23:27Speaker 3: of the program.
- 23:27Speaker 1: It wasn't the place to go.
- 23:29Speaker 3: It wasn't the place to go. And part of that
- 23:31Speaker 3: was people being like, man, you don't take your ass
- 23:33Speaker 3: up there to Austin, they're not going to treat you right.
- 23:34Speaker 3: Don't go up there to Oxford. You don't let the
- 23:36Speaker 3: folks wave that flag in your face.
- 23:38Speaker 1: But that's not the same thing as what we're talking about.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Right? Right.
- 23:42Speaker 1: What we're talking.
- 23:43Speaker 2: About right now is do not go to that school
- 23:48Speaker 2: because of the larger.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Political climate, right?
- 23:53Speaker 2: The argument for not going to Texas or going to
- 23:56Speaker 2: Ole Miss was they're going to treat you bad while
- 23:59Speaker 2: you're there, which is not the same thing as what
- 24:03Speaker 2: we're talking about. We're talking about, in this discussion, we
- 24:07Speaker 2: are talking about in response to something political and not
- 24:11Speaker 2: necessarily directly tied to the school.
- 24:13Speaker 1: We are asking you to do X, Y, and Z.
- 24:16Speaker 1: And I think that's a different discussion for me, right?
- 24:20Speaker 2: Like, I know enough stories as to why, nah, for
- 24:24Speaker 2: a very long time, your black ass should not have
- 24:26Speaker 2: gone to the University of Texas, right? There's a reason
- 24:29Speaker 2: why Jackson State was still cranking out first round picks
- 24:33Speaker 2: into the 21st century.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Because them boys would rather, it's an apartheid state.
- 24:37Speaker 2: They was going to Jackson State before it was that
- 24:40Speaker 2: they were going to Ole Miss. So yeah, I do
- 24:42Speaker 2: get saying, for your own good, you should not go here.
- 24:46Speaker 1: But I don't think that's the discussion that we're having.
- 24:48Speaker 2: This one where I find it interesting is, again, it's
- 24:51Speaker 2: telling people, also, we need to stop watching this because
- 24:54Speaker 2: we're in a different place now where this is the
- 24:56Speaker 2: first generation, really, of black people really caring about those schools.
- 25:00Speaker 3: Oh, absolutely.
- 25:01Speaker 2: We could decide, hey, we ain't rooting for UGA no more.
- 25:05Speaker 2: We ain't rooting for LSU. We're not doing whatever. And
- 25:10Speaker 2: if we're going to do that along with telling the
- 25:11Speaker 2: boys not to go there, I'm standing right beside you.
- 25:13Speaker 3: Well, I mean, look, I mean, I mean, without giving,
- 25:16Speaker 3: I mean, I've always rooted against schools that I assume
- 25:19Speaker 3: were more racist than others. Like I've never, you know,
- 25:21Speaker 3: so if that's a part. Oh yeah, that's true.
- 25:23Speaker 1: But rooting against, that's not like.
- 25:25Speaker 3: So what, I mean, I mean, again, I'm, I don't think, again,
- 25:28Speaker 3: I don't think this conversation, if me not talking about
- 25:30Speaker 3: the SEC is, is I, I mean, I guess that's,
- 25:34Speaker 3: I don't know. I still don't quite see the analogy there,
- 25:37Speaker 3: but again.
- 25:37Speaker 1: The analogy is that we are given oxygen.
- 25:42Speaker 2: To these programs in what are becoming these apartheid states, right?
- 25:47Speaker 3: Do you think Ole Miss enjoys us talking about this
- 25:50Speaker 3: like this? Do you think Alabama- No, no, no, no, no.
- 25:52Speaker 2: I'm talking about their football teams. I'm not talking about
- 25:55Speaker 2: them in a critical way.
- 25:57Speaker 3: I will never not talk about that even when I
- 25:58Speaker 3: talk about their football teams.
- 25:59Speaker 2: No, but I'm saying when September comes around- Yes. We're
- 26:03Speaker 2: still going to go about the business of college football as-
- 26:06Speaker 2: Even if we talk about what's going on with the states,
- 26:08Speaker 2: we're not going to change.
- 26:11Speaker 1: You can go to those schools and talk about the
- 26:12Speaker 1: voting shit if you want to. We can say that.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Every week that I talk about Ole Miss and college football,
- 26:18Speaker 3: as anybody who's following me knows, I'm talking about the
- 26:20Speaker 3: Confederate-ass uniforms and the Confederate-ass colors.
- 26:22Speaker 2: But I'm saying that the dudes we're telling not to
- 26:25Speaker 2: go could easily go there and do the exact same
- 26:27Speaker 2: thing that you're talking about. We are not boycotting them,
- 26:30Speaker 2: but we are asking other people to boycott.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Okay, but you know what, Bo? If they do go
- 26:34Speaker 3: there and they put that kind of heat on them, great.
- 26:38Speaker 3: Then I have a little bit less of a problem.
- 26:40Speaker 3: But I think the issue is that nobody says anything
- 26:47Speaker 3: and they just keep going to those schools. I would
- 26:51Speaker 3: prefer if they picked one. And again, I understand that
- 26:53Speaker 3: takes a level of courage that is asking a level
- 26:56Speaker 3: of commitment from people that may not be fair, but
- 26:59Speaker 3: we live in unfair times, right?
- 27:01Speaker 2: Right.
- 27:01Speaker 3: And I think one of the biggest problems is that
- 27:04Speaker 3: we don't see ourselves as part of a community anymore.
- 27:07Speaker 3: And it was just like, why would I give up
- 27:08Speaker 3: my opportunity if you're going to go to work? Well,
- 27:11Speaker 3: I mean, that is fantastic, but that is not going to,
- 27:14Speaker 3: that is what's part of the problem here. Like, I
- 27:16Speaker 3: just don't, I think that like at a certain point,
- 27:18Speaker 3: we have to start seeing each other as kin and
- 27:21Speaker 3: as people with destinies that are tied together. And I
- 27:24Speaker 3: don't think it's too much to ask, you know, Jeremiah
- 27:27Speaker 3: Smith has a brother to be like, I don't know, man.
- 27:31Speaker 3: Like it would be really helpful to the cause if
- 27:33Speaker 3: you said I'm not going to go to school.
- 27:35Speaker 1: I also don't I also don't think it'll be helpful
- 27:37Speaker 1: to the cause.
- 27:38Speaker 3: You don't. I do not. Really?
- 27:41Speaker 1: I think that.
- 27:43Speaker 2: White people have demonstrated very clearly that they are willing
- 27:47Speaker 2: to do racism over everything else.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Like I don't I don't think that let us not forget.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Southeast, the conference spent a long time lagging behind the
- 27:58Speaker 2: rest of the country because they just wanted to keep
- 27:59Speaker 2: on doing is right.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Doing the racism.
- 28:01Speaker 3: Right.
- 28:01Speaker 2: They've they've they've demonstrated that they've been cool with that
- 28:05Speaker 2: at different points. I think it could, you know, it
- 28:07Speaker 2: could take a stand. But in hearing what you're saying,
- 28:09Speaker 2: I think you're missing my point. If it's a we because.
- 28:14Speaker 1: That's that's in line with your larger point about community.
- 28:17Speaker 3: Yes.
- 28:17Speaker 2: If it's a we, I'm hearing it. I'm hearing a
- 28:21Speaker 2: lot of here's what y'all can do. without much, and
- 28:25Speaker 2: this is what I'm going to do with you. Not
- 28:26Speaker 2: from you personally. But I feel like that's where my
- 28:31Speaker 2: issue comes up. While we advise them, go places that
- 28:35Speaker 2: really ain't going to treat.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Us much better.
- 28:38Speaker 3: That may be fair, but I think this is all
- 28:41Speaker 3: part of a multi-pronged effort. I don't think anybody is
- 28:44Speaker 3: saying the potential college athletes are the only one. There
- 28:48Speaker 3: are people that are marching. There are people that are
- 28:50Speaker 3: working on legislation. There are people all, you know, organizing
- 28:53Speaker 3: in their communities that are going to still try to
- 28:56Speaker 3: turn out votes in spite of the tremendous obstacles against them.
- 28:59Speaker 3: There's a lot of people making a lot of sacrifices
- 29:01Speaker 3: that I hope that people educate those players on so
- 29:05Speaker 3: they don't think that they're in it alone because they
- 29:07Speaker 3: are not. There are a lot of other people doing things.
- 29:09Speaker 3: There are people writing about stuff. Like, this is not...
- 29:12Speaker 3: You know, I'm not trying to scare people, but, man,
- 29:16Speaker 3: we're sort of through the looking glass on this. No, no, no.
- 29:18Speaker 1: This is a thing.
- 29:19Speaker 2: I don't think it really hit me for whatever reason
- 29:22Speaker 2: until over the weekend that I realized, like, what percentage
- 29:25Speaker 2: of the Congressional Black Caucus is going to be wiped
- 29:27Speaker 2: out by these maps?
- 29:27Speaker 1: Something like a third?
- 29:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Or something like that?
- 29:30Speaker 2: Like, when Jasmine Crockett ran for Senate, the part that
- 29:32Speaker 2: people didn't get was her district didn't exist anymore.
- 29:34Speaker 3: It didn't exist anymore. She had to go somewhere.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:36Speaker 2: And so it's, we only get black representation if we
- 29:40Speaker 2: get a whole block, we get a whole neighborhood. Otherwise,
- 29:43Speaker 2: it ain't going to happen. And they are just, it's
- 29:45Speaker 2: not coincidental that they're doing this, right? It's not that, oh,
- 29:49Speaker 2: the maps are being redrawn.
- 29:50Speaker 1: And what do you know? Black people aren't going to
- 29:51Speaker 1: have representation anymore. as they did before. No, this is
- 29:54Speaker 1: the plan. This is not a bug. This is the feature.
- 29:57Speaker 3: Yeah, man. Look, I mean, again, and I'm not trying
- 30:00Speaker 3: to scare people. There's nothing to stop the federal government
- 30:03Speaker 3: from coming after you right now and just locking you
- 30:05Speaker 3: up for whatever reason under any pretext, and they don't
- 30:08Speaker 3: have to respond to anybody. And it could be for
- 30:10Speaker 3: any reason. It could be like, I don't like what
- 30:12Speaker 3: you said. I thought you threatened people with your advocacy
- 30:15Speaker 3: for Palestine or something like that. And it could be like, well,
- 30:18Speaker 3: you know, they can pretty much gin up any pretext
- 30:20Speaker 3: to fuck you up right now. And so... I think
- 30:23Speaker 3: that part of our job is bringing light to what's
- 30:28Speaker 3: going on in this country. And that's a part of it.
- 30:30Speaker 3: And look, man, again, it would be really sad if
- 30:34Speaker 3: a kid had to miss out on $ 6 million in
- 30:37Speaker 3: Georgia to get $ 5 million in Michigan. But I still
- 30:42Speaker 3: think that it's not that much to ask. And I
- 30:44Speaker 3: hope that people... talk to them about it. And I
- 30:46Speaker 3: hope that they educate those kids about all the other
- 30:49Speaker 3: stuff that's going on around them.
- 30:50Speaker 2: So that they know that we, I keep hearing you
- 30:52Speaker 2: on that. I'm not saying it's that much to, it's,
- 30:54Speaker 2: you seem to have a plan for what you willing
- 30:56Speaker 2: to do.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:58Speaker 2: I don't feel like the majority of the people who
- 30:59Speaker 2: are saying this have the same place.
- 31:01Speaker 3: You don't think the NAACP has a plan?
- 31:05Speaker 2: I mean, that's a larger discussion that I'm not really
- 31:08Speaker 2: trying to get into right now.
- 31:09Speaker 3: Okay.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Like don't, I mean, that's, That's an example that you
- 31:13Speaker 2: could pull, but they're not the only people. I just,
- 31:15Speaker 2: I don't like old people telling young people to go
- 31:18Speaker 2: put up to fight and I'm going to watch you
- 31:19Speaker 2: and tell you that you're doing a great job.
- 31:21Speaker 3: Here's the thing, man. I mean, Jesse Jackson, man. I mean,
- 31:23Speaker 3: this is three months after Jesse Jackson died, which is
- 31:26Speaker 3: sort of appropriate that the VRA dies after him. And
- 31:31Speaker 3: he asked people, again, he's an old head. John Lewis
- 31:34Speaker 3: was an old head. There's a lot of, you know,
- 31:37Speaker 3: James Clyburn, who almost got his head beaten in Orangeburg,
- 31:40Speaker 3: South Carolina. There's a lot of old people who have
- 31:44Speaker 3: sacrificed and given up things in ways that we are
- 31:47Speaker 3: not always available. And then they look back and they say, hey, look, man,
- 31:50Speaker 3: I fought my whole. The thing is, these old people
- 31:52Speaker 3: don't have to give a shit. They can say, you
- 31:53Speaker 3: know what? We fought for our rights. Our time is
- 31:56Speaker 3: at the end. And good luck to you. Like, fuck y'all.
- 31:59Speaker 1: They could do that.
- 31:59Speaker 3: But they're looking back at us and they know what
- 32:02Speaker 3: life was like on the other side of this thing.
- 32:04Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Old people. I don't listen to old people.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Right?
- 32:07Speaker 3: You just talking about niggas saying anything.
- 32:09Speaker 2: More or less.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Okay. It's easy to tell other people what to do.
- 32:14Speaker 1: It is. It is.
- 32:15Speaker 3: Right.
- 32:15Speaker 1: And so, no, I'm not talking about, you know, the
- 32:18Speaker 1: late John Lewis.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Okay?
- 32:19Speaker 1: I'm not talking, like, don't take it to the extreme. Okay.
- 32:23Speaker 2: But I'm just saying it's much easier to tell other
- 32:26Speaker 2: people what to do. Now I think you may raise
- 32:28Speaker 2: a decent point, right? You could go get this money
- 32:30Speaker 2: at Michigan or whatever it is. I just, I guess,
- 32:34Speaker 2: I guess I more than anything, I guess I'm more
- 32:36Speaker 2: inclined to say I'm not necessarily inclined to chastise someone
- 32:39Speaker 2: if they do not under these circumstances, because I think this,
- 32:42Speaker 2: I think that that decision is a bit more complex.
- 32:46Speaker 3: That, that is fair. Uh, and I, the thing is
- 32:50Speaker 3: you can't build community with somebody when they turn 17
- 32:52Speaker 3: or 18 years old. I mean, that's part of it, right?
- 32:55Speaker 3: So if somebody comes to you, I'm a five-star athlete now.
- 32:58Speaker 3: I have never heard of you before. And you telling
- 33:00Speaker 3: me I can't go to Auburn because what?
- 33:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's the thing. If we go do this,
- 33:06Speaker 2: this is a 10-year project, right?
- 33:09Speaker 3: We got to work on it.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Now, if we talk about it like that, like you start,
- 33:13Speaker 2: we're building this up along the way.
- 33:16Speaker 1: Okay. You understand what I'm saying? At that point, now
- 33:20Speaker 1: I'm hearing you.
- 33:20Speaker 2: If the guy that is running the AAU program or
- 33:24Speaker 2: whatever it is, It's like, look, we're going to start
- 33:26Speaker 2: talking to you boys about this or the 707 program.
- 33:29Speaker 1: How are they doing?
- 33:29Speaker 3: Right.
- 33:30Speaker 2: You know, we're going to talk. We're going to start
- 33:31Speaker 2: talking about this. And these are the things like everything
- 33:34Speaker 2: that we need to do as it relates to this.
- 33:35Speaker 2: And this is one of the great mistakes we make
- 33:37Speaker 2: is we don't we don't got so much that we
- 33:39Speaker 2: expect school to do.
- 33:39Speaker 3: Right.
- 33:40Speaker 1: Like we expect we we expect the tools of the
- 33:43Speaker 1: man to do these things for us.
- 33:45Speaker 2: But start this from the beginning. Now, again, I keep
- 33:48Speaker 2: saying the same thing. I'm not sure where exactly we're
- 33:51Speaker 2: supposed to go under these circumstances. That's going to truly
- 33:54Speaker 2: feel that much better.
- 33:56Speaker 1: But I get that.
- 33:58Speaker 2: All right, now, coming up next, because we have been
- 34:00Speaker 2: rolling for a minute, we got more coming up with
- 34:03Speaker 2: Joel Anderson, including what the hell going on with Stephen A.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Smith and Jalen Brown.

- 35:12Speaker 2: Joel Anderson.
- 35:15Speaker 1: So I hate when this happens, right? Stephen A.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Smith, when he was going off on Jalen Brown the
- 35:20Speaker 2: other day, and he said, the whole thing is the
- 35:22Speaker 2: reason that you did this is because.
- 35:24Speaker 1: You know to talk about me going to get you clicks.
- 35:26Speaker 3: And the truth is, it does. It works.
- 35:31Speaker 1: It does.
- 35:31Speaker 3: It really works.
- 35:33Speaker 1: It is. It is. Yeah. You know what I mean?
- 35:37Speaker 2: Like when I had Jake Paul on Game Theory, and
- 35:40Speaker 2: he was like, you're just using me for clout.
- 35:41Speaker 1: I was like.
- 35:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, look, man, look, cannabis is a lot.
- 35:48Speaker 3: We know a lot less about cannabis if he didn't go,
- 35:50Speaker 3: if LL Cool J didn't respond to him.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, nah, nah, nah.
- 35:55Speaker 2: But so what I find objectively, there are a couple
- 35:57Speaker 2: of things I find objectively interesting about Stephen A.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Smith.
- 36:00Speaker 2: And for those who don't know, Jalen Brown went on
- 36:03Speaker 2: Twitch because that's what he do now. And I would, yeah, okay,
- 36:07Speaker 2: I'll get to that point later. Jalen Brown goes on
- 36:09Speaker 2: Twitch and he tells, basically, we tell Stephen A. he
- 36:11Speaker 2: need to quit his job. Yeah.
- 36:12Speaker 3: Right?
- 36:13Speaker 2: He ain't no real journalist. He just out here for
- 36:15Speaker 2: the clickbait, everything else. And I actually, to be honest
- 36:18Speaker 2: with you, I had not found that Stephen A. Smith
- 36:21Speaker 2: had really been nearly as mean to Jalen Brown as
- 36:23Speaker 2: Jalen Brown believes that Stephen A.
- 36:24Speaker 1: Smith has been. But whatever. He gets on. Stephen A.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Smith took seven minutes on first take going after this
- 36:30Speaker 2: dude that low-key ended with threats of, you don't really
- 36:32Speaker 2: want me, basically, you don't want me to tell everything
- 36:35Speaker 2: that I know. What struck me about the seven minutes
- 36:37Speaker 2: was not simply the seven minutes, but the fact that
- 36:39Speaker 2: the First Take Twitter account took all seven minutes and
- 36:42Speaker 2: put it online, which sounds to me like something that
- 36:45Speaker 2: the boss asked them to do. Didn't even wait and
- 36:49Speaker 2: let the clip accounts go ahead and do it.
- 36:53Speaker 1: They did it themselves.
- 36:55Speaker 3: When it got there. Yeah. They ended the show and
- 36:59Speaker 3: he was like, all right, I want you to clip that.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Hold that. Don't edit it. Nothing. Run it.
- 37:06Speaker 2: Yeah maybe it didn't go that way right like maybe
- 37:08Speaker 2: their own social team you know how i feel about
- 37:10Speaker 2: social teams maybe their own social team made the decision
- 37:14Speaker 2: but anyway it went out there i would throw a
- 37:17Speaker 2: couple things out there right number one i'm curious your
- 37:19Speaker 2: thoughts on this part all these athletes all this time
- 37:24Speaker 2: ain't want to talk to us because the media be
- 37:26Speaker 2: making them look bad and they want to go straight
- 37:29Speaker 2: to their audience without anybody manipulating their messages. And I
- 37:34Speaker 2: think a lot of them should look around and realize
- 37:36Speaker 2: how many times we was actually looking out.
- 37:38Speaker 3: Man. I'm glad you said that because the first part
- 37:43Speaker 3: of the Stephen A rant that kind of got lost was, man,
- 37:47Speaker 3: get your ass a studio.
- 37:49Speaker 1: Yo, that was so funny.
- 37:52Speaker 2: He basically told that motherfucker, it doesn't difference between a 4.0.
- 37:56Speaker 1: And a 4.6, right?
- 37:57Speaker 2: He said, get you a studio, get you a director,
- 38:00Speaker 2: get you a producer.
- 38:03Speaker 3: Yo, class up your organization, brother, you know, before you
- 38:06Speaker 3: come at me, okay? Because, I mean, if you do
- 38:08Speaker 3: look at the Jalen Twitch stream, it's just kind of,
- 38:12Speaker 3: I don't know, it's just very low energy content. Very sad,
- 38:14Speaker 3: the presentation isn't well. Like to your point, athletes, and
- 38:19Speaker 3: you know, once upon a time I consider myself to
- 38:20Speaker 3: be one, think they do a better job of telling
- 38:24Speaker 3: their stories than sometimes they do. And they think they're
- 38:29Speaker 3: better at talking to their fans than having the medium,
- 38:33Speaker 3: you know, the middleman of the media sometimes. And we're
- 38:37Speaker 3: learning that as more people are getting out there and
- 38:39Speaker 3: just going, they give you the uncut raw on YouTube
- 38:42Speaker 3: or Instagram or whatever. And sometimes it's like, it would
- 38:45Speaker 3: be better if you had an editor. It would be
- 38:47Speaker 3: better if you had somebody working with you on your
- 38:49Speaker 3: messaging right now, bro. You know what I'm saying?
- 38:51Speaker 2: Yeah. Or somebody who's like getting your story down. And
- 38:55Speaker 2: I don't think people realize this, man. We don't really
- 38:58Speaker 2: be out here to burn people.
- 38:59Speaker 4: No.
- 39:00Speaker 1: Because that's not good for business.
- 39:02Speaker 3: Well, do you think that? Hold on. Hold on. Hold on.
- 39:05Speaker 3: I think that's true of us. Do you think that's
- 39:08Speaker 3: true of everybody?
- 39:09Speaker 1: I think that at the median.
- 39:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:13Speaker 1: That's a fair characterization.
- 39:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:15Speaker 2: Because the truth is, if what you do and it
- 39:19Speaker 2: gets a little wonky when like you're dealing with somebody
- 39:23Speaker 2: who like drops into sports from like.
- 39:24Speaker 1: Rolling Stone or something like that.
- 39:26Speaker 2: Right. Because because there are no iterations in the relationship.
- 39:30Speaker 2: right an iterated relationship requires things happen in the name
- 39:34Speaker 2: of trust but the truth is a lot of people
- 39:36Speaker 2: walking around with a lot of things they know and
- 39:39Speaker 2: they do not put out there and there are sometimes
- 39:42Speaker 2: you get the money quote and you can't throw it back.
- 39:44Speaker 3: Yes.
- 39:45Speaker 1: Right?
- 39:45Speaker 2: But I think all of us have been in a
- 39:47Speaker 2: place where we've been like, nah, I'm just not going
- 39:49Speaker 2: to put that in there. We don't want to cause
- 39:51Speaker 2: any problem. First, reporters want to be liked. They want
- 39:55Speaker 2: their job to be easy. They have to be around you.
- 39:58Speaker 1: There's a couple of them other dudes, right? But not
- 40:00Speaker 1: that many.
- 40:01Speaker 3: Not that many. Most of us, most of the people,
- 40:04Speaker 3: and I consider myself just like a work-a-day guy. I
- 40:07Speaker 3: had to go to the locker room, get information. I
- 40:10Speaker 3: want as little friction as possible. Like if you can
- 40:12Speaker 3: break me, also, man, I really want us to like
- 40:15Speaker 3: each other because maybe someday you may tell me stuff, right?
- 40:18Speaker 3: We can work together on that kind of thing.
- 40:20Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 40:21Speaker 3: Yeah. But yeah, so I'm not going to, why would
- 40:23Speaker 3: I embarrass you over something in your personal life? That's
- 40:27Speaker 3: not worth it to me because I'm coming to you
- 40:29Speaker 3: in this context. So yeah, absolutely.
- 40:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:31Speaker 1: But I think.
- 40:34Speaker 2: I think these cats probably do more to make themselves
- 40:36Speaker 2: look bad than we do because you know who their
- 40:38Speaker 2: editors are now?
- 40:40Speaker 3: People.
- 40:41Speaker 2: People who watch them streams and want the hits and
- 40:45Speaker 2: clip out or the social producer or whatever it is, right?
- 40:48Speaker 2: Those people are making you look way worse than we
- 40:52Speaker 2: did over.
- 40:53Speaker 1: The course of time. That's point number one. Number two,
- 40:55Speaker 1: and maybe you can help me out with this.
- 40:58Speaker 2: I have been hearing for 10 years how smart Jalen
- 41:02Speaker 2: Brown is.
- 41:03Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 41:05Speaker 2: I need somebody to explain it to me. And I'm
- 41:08Speaker 2: not saying that he's not smart.
- 41:10Speaker 1: It's possible.
- 41:11Speaker 2: I just haven't seen any of the evidence of what
- 41:14Speaker 2: you're talking about. Antonio Brown was his agent once.
- 41:18Speaker 4: Oh, man.
- 41:19Speaker 3: That's right.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Remember, Kanye was his guy. That's right.
- 41:22Speaker 4: Oh, man.
- 41:22Speaker 3: I've never seen.
- 41:23Speaker 2: The evidence of what is this Jalen Brown is so
- 41:26Speaker 2: smart and nothing that he's doing and it's Stephen A.
- 41:28Speaker 1: Smith back and forth. That's it. I just want, just
- 41:32Speaker 1: somebody put me up on game is all I'm saying.
- 41:35Speaker 3: You know what? I think, so do you think that
- 41:37Speaker 3: Jalen Brown gets the cow? And he did, he gave
- 41:40Speaker 3: a speech one time and I can't remember what school
- 41:43Speaker 3: it was at, but it was on something about like
- 41:45Speaker 3: his mission or whatever. And he talked, I mean, it
- 41:48Speaker 3: was a very thoughtful speech that he gave, but I
- 41:53Speaker 3: think that that gave him some bail that maybe he
- 41:55Speaker 3: didn't necessarily deserve. And again, I look, I don't think that,
- 41:58Speaker 3: I think that Jalen Brown, I like the way that
- 42:00Speaker 3: he carries himself. Maybe smartness isn't what it is or intelligence.
- 42:05Speaker 3: It's like dignity and seriousness. You could tell that he
- 42:09Speaker 3: is a very serious person. Stephen A said he doesn't
- 42:12Speaker 3: seem to suffer fools. So I bet a lot of
- 42:14Speaker 3: people read that and they're like, that's either really smart
- 42:16Speaker 3: or really uppity depending on who you are.
- 42:20Speaker 1: But what I.
- 42:21Speaker 3: Saw in this beef is that Stephen A is a
- 42:25Speaker 3: master of rhetoric and clarity. It's not hard to figure
- 42:28Speaker 3: out what he's saying. He's always on point, even if
- 42:31Speaker 3: you don't agree with him. He's hitting his points. Man,
- 42:34Speaker 3: Jalen Brown was having an argument about journalism. And that's
- 42:36Speaker 3: not what was going on here. This has nothing to
- 42:38Speaker 3: do with journalism. And I'm like, why did you... I'm like,
- 42:40Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying? Jalen, why do you keep
- 42:42Speaker 3: talking about journalism that he's not practicing journalism? I mean,
- 42:45Speaker 3: I'm sure Stephen A would agree with that.
- 42:47Speaker 1: Yeah, but.
- 42:49Speaker 2: Journalism is one of them terms like communism, like capitalism,
- 42:54Speaker 2: like socialism. Ask somebody what that means. and you might
- 42:58Speaker 2: get a bunch of different answers.
- 43:01Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 43:02Speaker 3: I mean, I.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Like, I don't know.
- 43:06Speaker 2: When Jalen Brown says that you're not engaging in journalism,
- 43:09Speaker 2: I don't know what he means.
- 43:12Speaker 3: That's fair.
- 43:12Speaker 2: I'm not saying he doesn't know what journalism is. I'm
- 43:15Speaker 2: saying it's a term that is broadly applied.
- 43:17Speaker 1: Right.
- 43:17Speaker 3: So do you think he also... Like, is an analogy
- 43:22Speaker 3: or a good one would have been like, media. If
- 43:26Speaker 3: he just said, this isn't good media. You're not putting
- 43:29Speaker 3: out good content.
- 43:30Speaker 2: When Draymond Green was in his old media, new media thing.
- 43:38Speaker 1: These guys are not scholars of this industry.
- 43:41Speaker 3: But in that part of it, we shouldn't have to
- 43:45Speaker 3: guess at what he meant if you're going to do this.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Say that one more time.
- 43:49Speaker 3: We shouldn't have to guess to what you were trying
- 43:51Speaker 3: to say or what you meant if you're going.
- 43:53Speaker 1: To do this.
- 43:53Speaker 2: Yeah, but again, I just think this is a, this
- 43:57Speaker 2: discussion about what is journalism or what is media, dah, dah, dah.
- 44:01Speaker 2: These are every now and then I come across a
- 44:03Speaker 2: word where I'm like, you know, I know how to
- 44:04Speaker 2: use it in a sentence, but if you were to
- 44:07Speaker 2: ask me to tell you what it means, I'm not
- 44:09Speaker 2: exactly sure. And so I think, I think what he's
- 44:13Speaker 2: just saying about Stephen A is I don't think you,
- 44:15Speaker 2: I just don't think you fair.
- 44:17Speaker 1: Right.
- 44:18Speaker 2: Like I just don't, but that's not the same thing
- 44:19Speaker 2: as journalism. Like, like, You know, when people are like, well,
- 44:22Speaker 2: Stephen A is not a journalist anymore. No, first, I
- 44:25Speaker 2: think Stephen A is still a journalist. I think First
- 44:27Speaker 2: Take is not a journalistic show. But I think that
- 44:29Speaker 2: Stephen A takes a lot of the practices of journalism
- 44:32Speaker 2: to inform what he does on that show, which is
- 44:34Speaker 2: a commentary show.
- 44:36Speaker 3: That's right. That's right. Yeah, that's fair. I mean, yeah,
- 44:38Speaker 3: it could be totally that he just got that wrong.
- 44:40Speaker 3: Because I was like, he kept saying journalism. And I
- 44:42Speaker 3: was like. Does he think that Stephen A is like,
- 44:45Speaker 3: that this is based on reporting? Sometimes, again, a lot
- 44:49Speaker 3: of what Stephen A says on First Take is informed
- 44:51Speaker 3: by the conversations he has with other people. That is
- 44:53Speaker 3: a part of journalism, right?
- 44:54Speaker 2: Yes.
- 44:55Speaker 3: But the practice that he's on there doing, that's not journalism.
- 44:58Speaker 3: That is media. That is just content. And again, it's
- 45:01Speaker 3: not bad. That's not a value judgment, but that's just
- 45:03Speaker 3: what is going on.
- 45:05Speaker 1: Yeah. But my other thing on it is, I just
- 45:09Speaker 1: don't think that threatening people is a great look or idea, right?
- 45:17Speaker 2: Like one thing that fascinates me about Stephen A is
- 45:20Speaker 2: that he's like, I am as big a star as
- 45:24Speaker 2: everybody I cover. Like that is how he sees himself.
- 45:27Speaker 2: You see that in the way that he walks through arenas.
- 45:29Speaker 2: You see that in doing all the commercials and everything
- 45:31Speaker 2: else is that he sees himself As in this ecosystem,
- 45:36Speaker 2: not simply like you go to a bar with something
- 45:39Speaker 2: you go to a bar in the city during a
- 45:41Speaker 2: sporting sporting events going on.
- 45:43Speaker 1: There's an ecosystem, right? There's the players.
- 45:45Speaker 2: They're all the people that are kind of around the
- 45:46Speaker 2: players is maybe some people from the league. And then
- 45:49Speaker 2: there are the journalists who are just there and around
- 45:51Speaker 2: and part of the job. That's how you get up
- 45:53Speaker 2: on game is being around. Like there's just the NBA
- 45:56Speaker 2: in particular I'm more familiar with, but it's just a
- 45:59Speaker 2: world around it. The groupies, they get to the first
- 46:02Speaker 2: security guard. The groupies, they get to the second security guard.
- 46:04Speaker 2: All of it is, but it's a whole biological system.
- 46:08Speaker 1: That exists. And Stephen A.
- 46:10Speaker 2: the journalist or the writer, was typically a guy who
- 46:13Speaker 2: was just kind of there hanging around. Even if you
- 46:15Speaker 2: got to the heights of it, you're kind of a
- 46:17Speaker 2: guy that's just there.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Stephen A.
- 46:18Speaker 2: Sees himself as a guy that is coming in and
- 46:21Speaker 2: is the same as all these other dudes. In fact,
- 46:25Speaker 2: to be fair to him, is more famous than probably 75%
- 46:27Speaker 2: of them at this point.
- 46:29Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 46:31Speaker 1: And makes this much money. He made more than the
- 46:34Speaker 1: mid-level exception.
- 46:35Speaker 3: Right.
- 46:36Speaker 1: That's fair.
- 46:36Speaker 3: I mean, he does. I mean, yeah, Stephen A, that's probably,
- 46:39Speaker 3: Stephen A probably more famous than 90 to 95% of athletes,
- 46:42Speaker 3: to be honest, bro. I mean, you know. I think that, yeah,
- 46:46Speaker 3: Stephen A should not do, I mean, here's the thing
- 46:49Speaker 3: that I think of, speaking of journalism. Well, you have information,
- 46:54Speaker 3: which you're alluding to is the idea that you have
- 46:58Speaker 3: information as to why Jalen Brown's teammates died. And people
- 47:02Speaker 3: in the league don't like him and may not necessarily
- 47:05Speaker 3: want to work with him. Why wouldn't you report that
- 47:07Speaker 3: if you have that information? Why would you withhold that
- 47:09Speaker 3: from us? It was kind of like the Reuben Baines shit.
- 47:12Speaker 3: Like during the draft, they were like, oh yeah, everybody
- 47:14Speaker 3: happened to know that he had killed somebody in a
- 47:16Speaker 3: car accident a year ago. Oh, for real? Why didn't
- 47:18Speaker 3: y'all tell us that? And that's kind of how I
- 47:20Speaker 3: feel about this. That's totally within the... Isn't that not
- 47:24Speaker 3: totally within... fair game to talk about that on that
- 47:28Speaker 3: show if he has that information. So why would you
- 47:30Speaker 3: withhold it, Stephen A? Which goes to show them that
- 47:33Speaker 3: it's not really, to your point about making threats against people,
- 47:38Speaker 3: that actually that's like agenda-based shit. Wouldn't people say that?
- 47:42Speaker 3: It's like, oh, you made me mad now and I
- 47:43Speaker 3: want to say something bad about you on air. Well,
- 47:45Speaker 3: you had information all along if you were being fair
- 47:48Speaker 3: and impartial. And this was something that was going to
- 47:50Speaker 3: teach us and tell us about the behind the scenes
- 47:54Speaker 3: of one of the NBA's most prominent and best teams
- 47:58Speaker 3: and why things may not be working out in the
- 48:00Speaker 3: way we think. Like, you're only going to tell us
- 48:03Speaker 3: that because you're mad?
- 48:04Speaker 1: Yeah, that's my thing. If it hasn't been worth saying
- 48:08Speaker 1: up to this point, then it's not worth saying. Yeah.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Yeah. If it's worth saying because the person you're covering
- 48:14Speaker 2: has offended you, that doesn't play well.
- 48:19Speaker 1: That's why they don't like us.
- 48:25Speaker 3: That is kind of like the exact example of a
- 48:28Speaker 3: thing that they would accuse us of doing. Oh, you're
- 48:31Speaker 3: reporting on me because I didn't give you access or
- 48:33Speaker 3: because I've shut you out or because I said something
- 48:36Speaker 3: mean to you or whatever or I gave information to
- 48:38Speaker 3: another reporter and not you. And now you've got an
- 48:41Speaker 3: agenda against me and you're going to try to embarrass me.
- 48:43Speaker 3: They say that all the time. They do. Like that
- 48:45Speaker 3: is an allegation made against media fairly regularly. And what
- 48:49Speaker 3: Stephen A is saying is that, yeah, it's kind of,
- 48:51Speaker 3: I mean, shit, some of us do do that. I'm
- 48:53Speaker 3: down to do it. And I don't, you know, I
- 48:56Speaker 3: don't think that's a good look. But I also understand
- 49:00Speaker 3: that again, Stephen A is not a reporter. Like, like
- 49:02Speaker 3: this is, this is good business for Stephen A, man. Like,
- 49:05Speaker 3: I don't, I can't, I mean, I, I don't think
- 49:07Speaker 3: I have to respect everything that he does, but I
- 49:11Speaker 3: know that this is all part of the theater that
- 49:13Speaker 3: Stephen A. Smith, he did this shit with Kevin Durant.
- 49:15Speaker 3: You don't want me to go there.
- 49:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm kind of like, I'm surprised that that's not
- 49:23Speaker 2: an approach I would recommend.
- 49:26Speaker 3: Not many people can do that either, by the way.
- 49:28Speaker 1: That is also true.
- 49:30Speaker 2: And look, man, there's always been journalists, media figures, whoever
- 49:34Speaker 2: it is, who are powerful enough to get people to
- 49:36Speaker 2: bend to their will. There's always been the guys that, hey,
- 49:40Speaker 2: you know you better give me that information. And then
- 49:42Speaker 2: they get it and then they go. But this is,
- 49:46Speaker 2: I don't know. I looked at that one and I
- 49:49Speaker 2: was like, hey, nobody to root for.
- 49:51Speaker 1: Isn't that something?
- 49:52Speaker 3: Oh, absolutely. And my advice to you, Jalen Brown, I
- 49:57Speaker 3: think Stephen A was right. Hire an editor. Hire a producer.
- 50:00Speaker 3: Get a background. Get a nice background. when you're going
- 50:03Speaker 3: to broadcast if you're going to do this. And that's
- 50:05Speaker 3: what I would say to any athlete. If you want
- 50:07Speaker 3: to talk to your public, like just professionalize your shit
- 50:10Speaker 3: a little bit and maybe you can tap into the
- 50:13Speaker 3: potential that they think is out there. But right now,
- 50:15Speaker 3: the way a lot of y'all are doing it is
- 50:17Speaker 3: just kind of look sloppy, dog.
- 50:18Speaker 2: Yeah, look, man, this is also this is not a
- 50:20Speaker 2: job that any old body can do.
- 50:23Speaker 1: It's just not.
- 50:24Speaker 3: People think they can get on the mic and just
- 50:26Speaker 3: it'll you know, they can say whatever they And that
- 50:29Speaker 3: what we do is not hard. I'm like, bro, I
- 50:32Speaker 3: understand that sometimes we can make it look like this
- 50:34Speaker 3: is just a fun conversation between friends, but there's a
- 50:36Speaker 3: lot of shit that goes into the background before you
- 50:39Speaker 3: get on here. And once you're on here, you got
- 50:41Speaker 3: to be sort of entertaining, man. You got to get
- 50:43Speaker 3: people to be willing to look up at you or
- 50:46Speaker 3: listen to what you got to say. And everybody just
- 50:48Speaker 3: can't do that.
- 50:49Speaker 2: Oh, and I feel like I don't know how many
- 50:53Speaker 2: people listening to this can do what I do. You
- 50:56Speaker 2: just can't. By the way, I probably can't.
- 50:59Speaker 1: Do what you do.
- 51:01Speaker 2: I am a professional at my job. Wow, the thing
- 51:07Speaker 2: said Joel just gave me a thumbs down.
- 51:09Speaker 3: Why would he do that?
- 51:10Speaker 1: It happened on the screen. It's not your fault. I
- 51:13Speaker 1: didn't think you did. There's the thumbs up to make
- 51:16Speaker 1: up for it. Fantastic. I'm going to give you one too.
- 51:19Speaker 3: I'm going to say this because people always call me
- 51:21Speaker 3: a hater and they're wrong. Bomani is the best extemporaneous
- 51:27Speaker 3: talker that I know of. I appreciate that. Nobody is
- 51:32Speaker 3: more gifted. You can just throw a word at Bomani,
- 51:36Speaker 3: and he can talk about it intelligently. He won't step
- 51:39Speaker 3: in it. Bomani's been talking on the mic for a decade,
- 51:43Speaker 3: more than that, 15 years.
- 51:45Speaker 1: Almost 20.
- 51:46Speaker 3: 20. And never gotten into no shit that people were like, man,
- 51:49Speaker 3: you shouldn't have said that on air. You might get fired.
- 51:53Speaker 3: That is an incredible ratio, dog, to have that career
- 51:56Speaker 3: and not do that.
- 51:57Speaker 1: I appreciate that.
- 51:58Speaker 2: And just so you know, as people, you know, I
- 52:00Speaker 2: understand why you would think that you're not a hater,
- 52:02Speaker 2: but I'll have, you know, I have not tolerated any
- 52:05Speaker 2: Joel Anderson slander about them videos them boys was putting
- 52:09Speaker 2: out about you.
- 52:09Speaker 1: I don't roll for you in front of the world, dog.
- 52:11Speaker 1: Don't ever say I never did, you dig?
- 52:13Speaker 3: And look, I'm going to compliment you again. I would say, listeners,
- 52:18Speaker 3: Bo has been a friend to me in ways that
- 52:21Speaker 3: I can't even talk.
- 52:21Speaker 1: About on here.
- 52:22Speaker 3: So I I come in love, okay? I appreciate that. But,
- 52:27Speaker 3: and I did hear what you said. No, no, no.
- 52:29Speaker 3: And I heard what you said, and I'm glad you
- 52:31Speaker 3: put that out there into the ether because, again, I'm
- 52:33Speaker 3: going to talk about it on Tailgate more in depth, but, like, bro,
- 52:38Speaker 3: if you, I dare anybody to get up off their chair,
- 52:42Speaker 3: somebody that has not done anything athletic in a year,
- 52:45Speaker 3: get their ass up off the chair and go just
- 52:47Speaker 3: try to do something athletic. You know what I'm saying?
- 52:49Speaker 3: Just go try. Like, try to go for a layup.
- 52:53Speaker 3: Go try to catch a 10-yard out and see how
- 52:56Speaker 3: your body feels when you do it. And I just,
- 52:58Speaker 3: you know, I had the experience of looking on camera
- 53:02Speaker 3: and being like, man, I look like I'm the subject
- 53:05Speaker 3: of America's Funniest Home Videos. You know what I'm saying?
- 53:09Speaker 3: I was like, you know, I was like, oh, shit, man.
- 53:12Speaker 3: I'm an old man, dog. I'm like one of them old, goofy,
- 53:15Speaker 3: you know, flabby dads that just kind of, oh, that
- 53:18Speaker 3: nigga fell down there. And I was like, but you
- 53:20Speaker 3: know what? I needed it. I fed off. niggas that
- 53:23Speaker 3: were talking about me who maybe shouldn't have been talking
- 53:25Speaker 3: about me.
- 53:25Speaker 2: Oh, I'm sorry.
- 53:26Speaker 3: I didn't mean to say it like that. I'm fed
- 53:28Speaker 3: off of that and I'm going to be ready, dog.
- 53:30Speaker 3: I'm getting my shit together. Trust me.
- 53:32Speaker 1: Powered by Spike. Joel Anderson is powered. It is amazing
- 53:39Speaker 1: because I am so not powered by Spike and you
- 53:42Speaker 1: are 100% driven. 87, 91, 93, whatever octane Spike y'all
- 53:43Speaker 1: got over there.
- 53:51Speaker 3: Oh, man, it makes me so amped, man. I think
- 53:54Speaker 3: it's a real problem in my life because I would
- 53:56Speaker 3: like to be able to tap into that motivation all
- 53:58Speaker 3: the time, you know, because it can really make me
- 54:00Speaker 3: do powerful things, right? I remember a girl, Janae once
- 54:05Speaker 3: told me, she was like, you can't jump over this pole. Like,
- 54:09Speaker 3: you know, it's like one of them little poles on
- 54:10Speaker 3: a walking trail. And I was so offended. I'm like,
- 54:13Speaker 3: what the fuck? Come on, man, don't treat me like
- 54:16Speaker 3: I'm an elderly man. And so, bro, I started working out. Again,
- 54:19Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying? Got myself rocked up. Usually
- 54:22Speaker 3: my workouts come off as some sort of insult when
- 54:24Speaker 3: I look at myself, but I'm like, I don't like
- 54:26Speaker 3: the way that look, bro. So that's what I need
- 54:30Speaker 3: to get right.
- 54:31Speaker 2: When the race going to be? Joel Anderson versus Billy Gill.
- 54:34Speaker 2: When the race going to be? Because I need to
- 54:35Speaker 2: clear my schedule to see if I can make it.
- 54:37Speaker 3: I mean, look, I would assume sometime right before the season. Okay.
- 54:41Speaker 3: So my thing is, Anybody who saw that video, again,
- 54:45Speaker 3: Tate embarrassed me, dog.
- 54:48Speaker 1: By the way, Tate, better athlete than people realize.
- 54:51Speaker 3: Tate is a very good athlete. He is a very
- 54:53Speaker 3: good athlete. But look, man, I jammed the motherfucker way
- 54:56Speaker 3: out in the field. That wasn't in a game. In
- 55:01Speaker 3: a game, he's not even an option anymore, okay? But
- 55:05Speaker 3: I'm bringing that mentality. I'm just like, oh, I jammed
- 55:07Speaker 3: Tate down. I was like, he's no longer an option.
- 55:10Speaker 3: The quarterback is going to have to go somewhere else.
- 55:12Speaker 3: But that's not how 7-on-7 goes or one-on-ones or whatever.
- 55:18Speaker 1: It's still bothering you, isn't it?
- 55:19Speaker 3: I mean, you know, like, man, Domani can talk about me.
- 55:22Speaker 3: Van can talk about me. You know what I'm saying?
- 55:24Speaker 3: Tate can talk about me. Dominique can talk about me.
- 55:28Speaker 3: I just felt like there was some people out there
- 55:30Speaker 3: taking shots at a nigga.
- 55:30Speaker 2: Say his name.
- 55:31Speaker 1: Say his name.
- 55:32Speaker 3: No, I'm not going to say it.
- 55:33Speaker 1: Say his name.
- 55:33Speaker 3: No, I'm not going to say it.
- 55:34Speaker 1: Say his name.
- 55:35Speaker 3: I'm not going to say it. Van told me not to.
- 55:37Speaker 3: Van told me not to. Van called, you all have
- 55:41Speaker 3: had tried to stage various levels of intervention with me
- 55:43Speaker 3: this week, and I wasn't even that mad. Because there's more,
- 55:47Speaker 3: trust me, there's a lot more people, a lot more
- 55:49Speaker 3: racist people mad at me about my appearance on Rewatchables
- 55:52Speaker 3: right now. That's a whole other conversation I'm avoiding right now.
- 55:56Speaker 2: Was y'all on there talking about Hooses or something?
- 55:58Speaker 3: No, Tropic Thunder.
- 56:01Speaker 1: Did you have a problem with Tropic Thunder?
- 56:03Speaker 3: I didn't, but I didn't love it. And so because
- 56:07Speaker 3: I didn't love it, people thought that I hated it.
- 56:09Speaker 3: And I don't want to get into the background on
- 56:13Speaker 3: what happened there, but look, I did the best that
- 56:16Speaker 3: I could. I tried to be as enthusiastic about the
- 56:17Speaker 3: movie as I could.
- 56:18Speaker 2: I'm going to teach you one day how to not
- 56:21Speaker 2: keep making things happen when you're talking to your boss.
- 56:28Speaker 2: This is two times in a row that you've been
- 56:30Speaker 2: on a show with your boss and you just can't help,
- 56:36Speaker 2: I understand.
- 56:37Speaker 3: He has a total, the kind of person that comes
- 56:40Speaker 3: in to listen to my boss, who is a good dude,
- 56:42Speaker 3: very good dude, one of the best people I've ever
- 56:43Speaker 3: worked for. A lot of people that come to Bill
- 56:46Speaker 3: Simmons though, I mean, I just had to say it,
- 56:48Speaker 3: they're racist, dog.
- 56:49Speaker 2: Well, it's kind of like when I would do PTI,
- 56:51Speaker 2: and I'm like, oh, this is a different audience than
- 56:54Speaker 2: when I do these daytime shows.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 56:56Speaker 3: And there are a lot of great Bill Simmons fans
- 56:58Speaker 3: and Ringer fans, and this has been an experience that
- 57:02Speaker 3: is truly unique. Like, I've really enjoyed it. Dog, Bomani,
- 57:07Speaker 3: you can appreciate this. When I was in Manhattan Beach
- 57:10Speaker 3: a couple weeks ago, and I'm going to go get
- 57:12Speaker 3: dinner at the water, you know what I'm saying? I
- 57:14Speaker 3: was going to just chill out, just think about stuff.
- 57:18Speaker 3: And I go to Old Navy to buy myself some pants.
- 57:21Speaker 3: And some brother in Old Navy, I see him look
- 57:23Speaker 3: at me. He's like, what? And he comes around. He's like,
- 57:25Speaker 3: are you Charles Anderson? And I was like, yeah. He
- 57:28Speaker 3: was like, man, I love you on the Beaumont Jones show.
- 57:31Speaker 3: I think it was Tyrell and Manhattan Beach. So shout
- 57:34Speaker 3: out Tyrell and Manhattan Beach. So look, man, this ringer
- 57:39Speaker 3: thing is great. But some of them people, man, they
- 57:43Speaker 3: don't want to fly in their ointment.
- 57:47Speaker 1: Yes, but Joel, I just want to remind you, some
- 57:50Speaker 1: of those people aren't people.
- 57:52Speaker 2: That's what I need you to understand about the internet
- 57:55Speaker 2: these days.
- 57:55Speaker 3: Did you see the fight I had on Threads yesterday? No, Joel.
- 57:59Speaker 1: No, I did not.
- 58:00Speaker 3: Somebody, I complimented fucking Boston. I complimented that city. They
- 58:05Speaker 3: were like, what city do you think really exceeded your expectations?
- 58:11Speaker 3: I said, Boston. I was like, it actually is kind
- 58:13Speaker 3: of pretty. Um, I like to be in on the water.
- 58:16Speaker 3: Like there's more diverse than you thought. And man, of course,
- 58:19Speaker 3: you know, every, every black person from Boston does not.
- 58:23Speaker 3: Howard Bryan had to come and be like, well, actually
- 58:25Speaker 3: it's been very diverse. We do blah, blah, blah. And
- 58:27Speaker 3: I'm like, man, I don't give a fuck, bro. I
- 58:28Speaker 3: was like, I was trying to be nice about your city.
- 58:30Speaker 3: I was trying to be nice and they couldn't even
- 58:33Speaker 3: accept it. So, you know, me, I was just like,
- 58:36Speaker 3: fuck Boston. You know, all these other people that came in,
- 58:39Speaker 3: started talking. And I'm just like, I was like, at
- 58:41Speaker 3: a certain point, I was like, man, I wonder if
- 58:43Speaker 3: this person is real. So maybe, but wouldn't that be
- 58:49Speaker 3: weird to create a bot that would do that? What's
- 58:51Speaker 3: the point of creating a bot that would have an
- 58:53Speaker 3: argument with me about Boston?
- 58:58Speaker 2: Some things aren't to be understood. Joel Anderson, check him
- 59:01Speaker 2: out on the ring of tailgate.
- 59:03Speaker 1: Go ahead and do the thing.
- 59:04Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. What's up? Check me out on the ring
- 59:06Speaker 3: of tailgate and the press box and, you know, on
- 59:09Speaker 3: the website. because I got some stories to write that
- 59:11Speaker 3: will be coming up soon that will not be about sports.
- 59:14Speaker 1: All right. I'll check them out. Ladies and gentlemen, thanks
