- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Isaiah chapter
- 0:1929, Isaiah chapter 29, and in this chapter we read an
- 0:25indictment against Israel. These were the people that were
- 0:29supposed to to be the people of God, and yet they were not
- 0:32walking with the Lord. They were not obeying him.
- 0:35Instead, they were living in consistent open rebellion and
- 0:40rejection of who God was, His character, the ways that He had
- 0:44called Israel to in Judah, to live out His character, to image
- 0:51who He was to one another and to the world around them, They just
- 0:55wanted nothing to do with it. And so here's what God says
- 0:58against Jerusalem. This would be about 50 to 100
- 1:02years before the southern Kingdom of Judah would be taken
- 1:06away by the Babylonians into exile for about 70 years.
- 1:11And so this is the prophecy that Isaiah gives during that time
- 1:15period against his very own wicked nation and wicked people
- 1:20and the capital city of Jerusalem.
- 1:23The verses say this beginning in verse #1 woe to Ariel.
- 1:27Now, that's not The Little Mermaid.
- 1:29That is another name meaning like Lion of God is a nickname
- 1:36that is given to Jerusalem. So it says woe to Ariel, this is
- 1:42Jerusalem, Ariel, the city where David camped.
- 1:45Jerusalem had not previously been the capital city for the
- 1:50people of Israel. David himself actually conquered
- 1:54Jerusalem from the Jebusites and then made that the capital of
- 2:00first Judah and then all Israel. And so here, this place that had
- 2:06such close ties with who the Jewish people believed
- 2:10themselves to be, and even in keeping with the promises of God
- 2:13that we would read in Second Samuel 7 with David himself that
- 2:17people that place Jerusalem would experience woe, sadness,
- 2:22grief, verse #1 continues, continue year after year.
- 2:27Let the festivals recur. I will oppress Ariel, and there
- 2:31will be mourning and crying, and she will be to me like an Ariel.
- 2:36I will camp in a circle around you.
- 2:38I will besiege you with earth ramps.
- 2:41I will set up my siege towers against you.
- 2:44So God has plans here, not for Jerusalem's temporary good, but
- 2:50for Jerusalem's temporary fall. Verse #4 You will be brought
- 2:55down. You will speak from the ground,
- 2:57and your words will come from low in the dust.
- 3:00Your voice will be like that of a spirit from the ground.
- 3:03Your speech will whisper from the dust.
- 3:07So here God is going to humiliate this southern Kingdom
- 3:12of Judah and the people of Jerusalem.
- 3:14There's so much pride and evil that is taking place that God
- 3:18finally says enough. Verse #5 Your many foes will be
- 3:23like fine dust that is all over the place.
- 3:26There's going to be a lot of foes and many of the ruthless
- 3:29like blowing chaff. Then suddenly, in an instant,
- 3:32you will be punished by Yahweh of heaven's armies with Thunder,
- 3:36earthquake and loud noise, storm, Tempest, and a flame of
- 3:40consuming fire. Here we're meant to recall the
- 3:44various ways in which God had previously protected His people
- 3:48by inflicting these things onto the attacking nations, the
- 3:54nation of Egypt when Israel was coming out in the Exodus.
- 3:58And God says these things, these ways in which I protected you
- 4:03before because other people were being evil.
- 4:07Now you are being evil. And so it would almost be unjust
- 4:11for me to not also levy out these punishments on you as
- 4:16well. So you can think of the Thunder,
- 4:18the earthquake, the loud noise, and it should remind us about
- 4:22the journeyings in Exodus, about the times even within the time
- 4:29of the Judges. And as Moses and Aaron deal with
- 4:34Kora and Kora's rebellion, the earthquake that happens opens up
- 4:39the crown. And Kora and those that were
- 4:41rebelling against Moses and Aaron fell into the earth itself
- 4:46as a result of that earthquake. You have the Thunder and the
- 4:49loud noise that comes from Mount Sinai that makes the people
- 4:53nervous and they go, no Moses, you deal with Yahweh.
- 4:57We're too scared to interact with him ourselves.
- 5:01Or you can think about Elijah on the mountains and the Thunder
- 5:06and the noises that came from him.
- 5:08Even the storm, The Tempest and the flame of consuming fire.
- 5:12Even think of that chariot that took up Elijah.
- 5:15You can think of the fire that was called down from heaven on
- 5:19to the the burnt offering there in First Kings.
- 5:23All of that is meant to come into mind that what God once
- 5:26used as a blessing and a protection for Israel, now as
- 5:31they have simply become like all of the nations around them, that
- 5:35same those same punishments would be levied out on them.
- 5:38Verse #7 All the many nations going out to battle against
- 5:41Ariel, all the attackers. The siege works against her, and
- 5:45those who oppress her will then be like a dream, a vision in the
- 5:49night. It'll be like a hungry one who
- 5:51dreams he's eaten, eating, then wakes and is still hungry.
- 5:55And like a thirsty one who dreams he is drinking, then
- 5:58wakes and is still thirsty, longing for water.
- 6:01So it will be for all the many nations who go to battle against
- 6:05Mount Zion in the time up until Babylon would eventually, if you
- 6:12will, dethrone Judah and Jerusalem.
- 6:16There are many different groups that would come and try to
- 6:20overthrow Israel. One of the most predominant of
- 6:24these would be the nation of Assyria.
- 6:26And we're going to read, I think it's within the next like 10 to
- 6:2915 chapters, A narrative account of when Assyria attempted to
- 6:35destroy Judah. And just like this, they have a
- 6:37siege that they build up against Judah, against Jerusalem
- 6:41specifically, and they think there's no hope.
- 6:44And God comes through in one night with an Angel and kills
- 6:48many in the army of Assyria. Assyria actually gets news that
- 6:52there's a whole rebellion and war thing that's happening
- 6:56closer to home, and so they leave that siege and go there.
- 7:01And we even have some historical records of the fight that they
- 7:05left in Jerusalem after destroying many of the different
- 7:09cities in Judah. But they didn't destroy
- 7:11Jerusalem, and they went back to deal with that rebellion that
- 7:16was there. And it was quick.
- 7:17It's almost like a dream that one minute it seems like you're
- 7:20going to be ultimately destroyed.
- 7:22And then all of a sudden you wake up, the Syrian Army has
- 7:25left because they have to go deal with stuff back home, and
- 7:29you are safe. And so here, this would be
- 7:31another confirmation to the people of Judah of God's
- 7:35protection and also of the coming judgement, and that they
- 7:39needed to walk with the Lord, that even though it wasn't
- 7:41popular, it wasn't what everyone was doing during the time
- 7:44period, it was something that they desperately needed to do.
- 7:48Verse #9 stop and be astonished. Blind yourselves and be blind.
- 7:56They're drunk, but not with wine.
- 7:58They stagger, but not with beer. For Yahweh has poured out on you
- 8:02an overwhelming urge to sleep. He has shut your eyes, the
- 8:06prophets, and covered your heads this year.
- 8:08So here, as the nations are wanting to destroy Judah and
- 8:14Jerusalem, for a time, they would be unsuccessful in doing
- 8:18so. And they would just have an
- 8:19overwhelming desire and an urge to be able to get rid of this
- 8:23pesky little nation and this capital city.
- 8:27But it wouldn't happen yet. And God would foil the plans for
- 8:32a particular set of time. Verse #11 for you, this is
- 8:37Isaiah. The entire vision will be like
- 8:39the words of a sealed document. If it's given to one who can
- 8:41read and he's asked to read it, he'll say, I can't read it
- 8:45because it's sealed. And if the document is given to
- 8:47one who can't read and he's asked to read it, he will say, I
- 8:51can't read. So here there would be a
- 8:54mysterious nature to what was happening until all of the
- 9:00different things came to pass. But even right now as we're
- 9:03reading through Isaiah, unless you've got maybe like a study
- 9:06Bible or something that walks through some of the historical
- 9:09markers, you might read through this and go, I have no idea
- 9:12what's happening. Well, and that's what God is
- 9:14here describing that until such time as these events took place,
- 9:20it would be almost useless. Someone would say, I don't know
- 9:23enough about the future to be able to validate or invalidate
- 9:27this. That was one of the things that
- 9:29was different in the Old Testament prophets from what
- 9:32many people that claimed to be prophets today.
- 9:34The Old Testament prophets, they were always correct in
- 9:38everything that they said because they were speaking as
- 9:41the Lord told them to speak. And so everything that they said
- 9:44was right both in their judgments and and words about
- 9:48the right and wrong that peoples were doing.
- 9:51That was the predominant work of a prophet.
- 9:53But then also when the prophets were given specific information
- 9:56by God about the future, that always came to pass.
- 10:01Today, if you ever listen to anyone that claims to be a
- 10:04prophet, the vast majority, the vast majority of instances that
- 10:10person is lying. They are a false prophet.
- 10:13They are wanting to get crowds, they're wanting to get
- 10:16accolades, they're wanting a following.
- 10:19But they will not and cannot be empirical about the future.
- 10:24We saw this several years ago. People made all sorts of
- 10:27outlandish claims about the presidency.
- 10:30People made claims about specific wars.
- 10:34They made claims about specific diseases.
- 10:36They made claims about specific people that just over and over
- 10:39and over again did not come true.
- 10:41If someone claims to know the future, frankly, you should
- 10:45always severely doubt that person always 100% of the time.
- 10:50Now, if it happens to come true, specifics come true time and
- 10:54time and time again. Well, wonderful that that might
- 10:56give you an indication. OK, it could be that, you know,
- 10:59maybe the Holy Spirit is is working through this person, or
- 11:03it could be that the person has maybe some inside information.
- 11:07But don't just believe someone because they claim to have a
- 11:10word from God. If someone can open up the word
- 11:13of God and show you here's what the Bible says, here's what it
- 11:16says in context to what is initially written, then you can
- 11:22believe that person because they are telling you things not based
- 11:24on their own interpretation of their feelings or emotions or
- 11:29thoughts, but they are wanting to point you to the word of God.
- 11:31The Word of God is the most important thing, not our own
- 11:35thoughts. Verse #13 The Lord said.
- 11:39These people approach me with their speeches to honor me with
- 11:42lip service, yet their hearts are far from me, and human rules
- 11:47direct their worship of me. Therefore I will again confound
- 11:52these people with wonder after wonder.
- 11:56The wisdom of their wise will vanish and the perception of
- 12:00their perceptive will be hidden. God does not just want you to go
- 12:05through the motions with Him. He doesn't want other people to
- 12:09dictate the way that you call out to him, that you relate to
- 12:13Him. Human rules do nothing for
- 12:16worship. Now, every place has some sort
- 12:20of like boundary markers, rules that we have in worship.
- 12:24But the truth is that that only extends as far as it goes in
- 12:28that, you know, local church or that that local place of
- 12:33worship. I cannot pray to God on your
- 12:38behalf. Now I can pray for some needs
- 12:39that you have. I can pray for your walk with
- 12:41the Lord, but I cannot determine your life.
- 12:44I can't say you need to spend 30 minutes every single day reading
- 12:49the word of God, meditating on it.
- 12:51And then you need to spend 15 to 30 minutes in prayer or you need
- 12:55to spend one hour in prayer after that.
- 12:57And then later in the day, after you, you know, get paid for the
- 13:01work that you do for the day, you need to give 25% of your
- 13:05income to Tabernacle Baptist Church.
- 13:09And then after that, you need to go after you're done with work,
- 13:13you need to go out and you need to evangelize at least 5 people
- 13:17and get five people to pray the sinner's prayer before you come
- 13:21home that day. And you care for your family and
- 13:24you lead them in family devotions that need to be no
- 13:27less than 25 minutes. And then you need to go to bed.
- 13:31And then you need to wake up the next morning at 5:00 AM and do
- 13:34the same thing over and over again.
- 13:36I could prescribe a list of rules for your relationship with
- 13:41God and and none of those things that I mentioned are inherently
- 13:43bad in and of themselves. It's good to give.
- 13:47It's good to evangelize, good to pray, good to care for your
- 13:50family, good to do family devotions, good to work at your
- 13:53job. All of that is are good things.
- 13:56But here I, I feel like the end of verse #13 their hearts are
- 14:01far from me and human rules direct their worship of me.
- 14:06I, I need my walk with God to not merely be some list of
- 14:11things that someone else has given to me.
- 14:13I need to have a personal walk with God, one that says God, I
- 14:17am in covenant relationship with you like I'm in a covenant
- 14:21relationship with Samantha. There are maybe things that in
- 14:25my relationship with Samantha, expectations that she would have
- 14:29of me that no one else could give.
- 14:32The list of things that I need to do for Samantha that would be
- 14:35as meaningful as what I would learn in simple relationship
- 14:40with her. Or if you will, because my
- 14:43relationship with her is personal, it means that the
- 14:46actual list of rules that I would have with her are going to
- 14:52be personal to her. And so it is with your
- 14:54relationship with the Lord that the Lord might have you to do
- 14:57some things that he won't ask of me, or He might have me do some
- 15:01things that He would never put onto you.
- 15:04But we need to be personally responsive and receptive to the
- 15:10Holy Spirit to be able to listen to His voice.
- 15:13And just because someone else is doing something, it might even
- 15:17be a good thing, a good idea that they have in their
- 15:20relationship with God, it doesn't mean that that has to be
- 15:22you as well. We have a personal covenant
- 15:27relationship with God. And so listen to His voice, His
- 15:31wisdom, not just the wisdom or thoughts of other people.
- 15:35Verse #15 Woe to those who go to great lengths to hide their
- 15:39plans from Yahweh. They do their works in the dark
- 15:42and say, who sees us? Who knows us?
- 15:45You have turned things around as if the Potter were the same as
- 15:49the clay. How can what is made say about
- 15:52its maker? He didn't make me.
- 15:54How can what is formed say about the one who formed it?
- 15:58He doesn't understand what he's doing.
- 16:00We, the clay, the pottery, we try and tell our Creator, the
- 16:06one who sculpted us, who made us, who is creating our story.
- 16:10We try to tell him how our lives should go.
- 16:13And my friend, that is just foolishness.
- 16:15He is the author of the story and he writes good stories.
- 16:22Verse #17 Isn't it true that in just a little while Lebanon will
- 16:28become an orchard, and the orchard will seem like a forest
- 16:32here? There's more difficulties that
- 16:36come against Lebanon, a place of incredible woodwork and
- 16:41carpentry and donating different trees and things, but it's going
- 16:46to become overgrown as a result of kind of the defeat of the
- 16:51rulers of that place. Verse #18 On that day the deaf
- 16:55will hear the words of a document, and out of the deep
- 16:57darkness the eyes of the blind will see.
- 17:00The humble will have joy after joy in Yahweh, and the poor
- 17:04people will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
- 17:07Certainly here we can think about both Jesus coming and that
- 17:12foretaste of that ultimate day when he returns once more and
- 17:17makes all things right. He made it right in his first
- 17:20advent, in his first coming with our souls, with our relationship
- 17:24with God, so that God can come and he can have mercy, He can
- 17:29have love and a family when he comes back to the earth.
- 17:34Without Christ, we would not have the relationship with God
- 17:38that was needed. So if he came and was going to
- 17:40punish the wicked, he would have to punish all humanity.
- 17:43But because of Christ, and what Christ accomplished on the
- 17:46cross, that it is finished that he cried.
- 17:49Now we who once were far off have been brought close by the
- 17:54blood of Christ. So there's kind of both things
- 17:58in mind here that Jesus brought this.
- 18:00He brought this joy. He made the deaf to hear, the
- 18:03blind to see. Those that were humble, lowly,
- 18:06having no money, downtrodden. They had joy after joy in Jesus,
- 18:12and the poor people rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
- 18:16Verse #20 For the ruthless one will vanish, the scorner will
- 18:20disappear, and all those who lie in wait with evil intent will be
- 18:24killed. Those who with their speech
- 18:26accuse a person of wrongdoing, who set a trap for the 1
- 18:29mediating at the city gate, and without cause deprive the
- 18:33righteous of justice, There is coming that day when all wrong
- 18:37is punished. And those that have called out
- 18:40to the Lord, those that desire relationship with Him and right
- 18:44relationship with others will receive that verse #22 Therefore
- 18:48Yahweh, who redeemed Abraham, says this about the House of
- 18:52Jacob. Jacob will no longer be ashamed,
- 18:55and his face will no longer be pale.
- 18:57For when he sees his children, the work of My hands within his
- 19:01nation, they will honor my name. They will honor the Holy One of
- 19:05Jacob and stand in awe of the God of Israel.
- 19:09Those who are confused will gain understanding, and those who
- 19:13grumble will accept instruction. I love that little poem.
- 19:20This section here. There's no longer shame about
- 19:231's behavior or actions as a result of the fact that God
- 19:29works and he transforms and he makes our failures into
- 19:34something beautiful. Not that our failures, not that
- 19:38we should pursue our failures and pursue sin, God forbid.
- 19:41But God can make even our human fallenness an evil turn out
- 19:48ultimately to good through His plan.
- 19:52And there is going to be honor and worship of God that happens
- 19:56as a result of what God does. And those that were confused,
- 19:59that were grumbling, that we're not obeying or listening to the
- 20:02Lord, they find a whole new way to live.
- 20:05They find understanding, they accept instruction.
- 20:08God is glorified. People experience life.
- 20:11That is what is finally awaiting.
- 20:13So yes, there is judgment that is coming against Jerusalem, but
- 20:16it's not forever. And one day God is going to make
- 20:20all things right. And so we can live in the broken
- 20:23now, knowing that there is coming a whole, a fixed, a
- 20:29restored day later where every wrong is made right.
- 20:33Thanks for tuning in today. Next episode will be in chapter
- 20:3730 and looking forward to joining with you then.
