- 0:00Speaker 1: Talk to Jeff Legwold here on a Monday after noon.
- 0:02Speaker 2: As always, Jeff Legwald brought to you by the International
- 0:05Speaker 2: Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. Start with
- 0:09Speaker 2: a job and end with a career. Jeff, You're all
- 0:13Speaker 2: draft all the time right now. Okay, So this city
- 0:18Speaker 2: has really talked itself into Eli Stowers, the tight end
- 0:21Speaker 2: out of Vanderbilt. Okay, in a world where maybe he's
- 0:26Speaker 2: not available at number sixty two or Denver cannot trade
- 0:29Speaker 2: up high enough to try and draft Eli Stowers. Who
- 0:34Speaker 2: are the others? Who is a Claire out of Ohio State.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Who is a tight end that you look at and
- 0:40Speaker 2: you say that skill set matches what Denver needs?
- 0:45Speaker 3: Well, I mean there's no even Stours wouldn't be a
- 0:49Speaker 3: complete match for Sean Payton's offense. Sean prefers the tight
- 0:56Speaker 3: end who can do at all. Unfortunately, the blocker receiver,
- 1:00Speaker 3: high end at both. It's not really in this draft
- 1:05Speaker 3: because that's not the position anymore. In a lot of
- 1:09Speaker 3: college football. You know, a lot of your most athletic
- 1:13Speaker 3: tight ends are just basically big wide receivers in the
- 1:16Speaker 3: college game now. So Max Clair definitely, you know there's
- 1:20Speaker 3: three tight ends that will probably go at or before
- 1:25Speaker 3: the Broncos pick. Obviously Sadiq is the first rounder, yeah,
- 1:29Speaker 3: and then Claire and Stowers are probably the only two
- 1:33Speaker 3: others worthy of the sixty second pick. If either were there,
- 1:40Speaker 3: you know, I will likely have them both rated higher
- 1:43Speaker 3: than that. But they're both receiver first, very little blocking,
- 1:48Speaker 3: so you know, would Sean Payton come off the Jeremy
- 1:53Speaker 3: Shockey is my dream tight end position, which is basically,
- 1:58Speaker 3: when you talk about that position to Sean Payton, he
- 2:02Speaker 3: will almost instantly go to a Jeremy Shockey story. And
- 2:08Speaker 3: there are no Jeremy Shockeys on this board in terms
- 2:11Speaker 3: of high end receiver who also is a high end
- 2:15Speaker 3: functional blocker in the run game and pass protection.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Jeff, I feel like Max Claire is probably, I would guess,
- 2:23Speaker 2: of the two, And maybe I'm giving too much credence
- 2:25Speaker 2: to combine numbers, but I feel like Claire would be
- 2:30Speaker 2: more likely to be available, either you know, mid fifties
- 2:35Speaker 2: or even getting up towards sixty two. Okay, were that
- 2:38Speaker 2: the case in Denver, were to take a hard look
- 2:40Speaker 2: at him, give me the scouting report. You've watched the
- 2:44Speaker 2: film on all these guys with the top one hundred
- 2:46Speaker 2: coming out, give me the Jeff Legwall blurb on Max
- 2:50Speaker 2: Claire tight end Ohio State.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Well, I mean, his biggest advantage is his movement skills.
- 2:56Speaker 3: He's great with the ball, and he's a hardcover because
- 3:00Speaker 3: he's got like a the reach of a defensive end,
- 3:04Speaker 3: of an edge of an edge rusher. He's got the
- 3:06Speaker 3: big reach that makes him a tough cover in traffic.
- 3:12Speaker 3: So in the receiving game, he's a He's an immediate contributor.
- 3:17Speaker 3: It's just how do you play him in the Broncos lineup?
- 3:19Speaker 3: If you get to the point where you know, can
- 3:22Speaker 3: you play him and Ingram together? Probably not? Can you
- 3:26Speaker 3: do you tip plays with a rookie and troutman in
- 3:30Speaker 3: a two tight end set. I mean, all of those
- 3:32Speaker 3: things become part of the equation because again, as a blocker,
- 3:37Speaker 3: he has a ways to go to be ready, especially
- 3:41Speaker 3: for a coach like Sean. Sean's not big on we'll
- 3:45Speaker 3: figure it out, you know, the rest of it as
- 3:48Speaker 3: we go. He wants to see a little of it
- 3:50Speaker 3: before you're in the lineup. But a really good mover.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Max Claire athletic, good with the ball, isn't bothered too much,
- 3:59Speaker 3: catching in traffic, all those things you want, and a
- 4:01Speaker 3: tight end, there are some drops. I had him for
- 4:05Speaker 3: seven over the last two years, and that's that's a
- 4:08Speaker 3: pretty high number for a tight end. Yeah, you know that,
- 4:11Speaker 3: and that would be a bit of a pause.
- 4:13Speaker 1: That won't play well with the bow Knicks crowd.
- 4:16Speaker 3: No, no, and it doesn't again the head coach, he
- 4:20Speaker 3: isn't making the call in the draft room, but he's
- 4:23Speaker 3: got a very very very big voice, and they are
- 4:27Speaker 3: not going to take a player if Sean doesn't have
- 4:30Speaker 3: a vision for him in the lineup. Now they've had
- 4:33Speaker 3: him in here and they draft their top thirty visit guys.
- 4:38Speaker 3: You know, almost all of their class in the in
- 4:42Speaker 3: the past few years have been the top thirty visits
- 4:46Speaker 3: and he was among them. So he has reached that
- 4:49Speaker 3: level of interest for them, and he is worthy of
- 4:52Speaker 3: that pick. I'm just telling you. If they make that pick,
- 4:57Speaker 3: they see him as a receiver and they're okay with that,
- 5:00Speaker 3: and they'll they'll move on with the rest.
- 5:03Speaker 4: By the way, I mean, you know, he Nate drops
- 5:06Speaker 4: a joke. You're too locked in, Leggy. We gotta get
- 5:08Speaker 4: you out. We gotta get you say we need you,
- 5:10Speaker 4: we need you out of a top one hundred. Let
- 5:12Speaker 4: me ask you something, because we were just talking about
- 5:14Speaker 4: David Roddy, and you know, he's the guy I think
- 5:17Speaker 4: of when back in the day, and I guess, you know,
- 5:19Speaker 4: Wesley Duke comes to mind, of course famously, Julius Thomas.
- 5:23Speaker 4: What has happened to the football player they try.
- 5:26Speaker 1: To turn into basketball?
- 5:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm sorry, basketball player, they try to turn intoball player. Well,
- 5:32Speaker 4: I guess, but I felt like they were like at
- 5:37Speaker 4: least two or three a year back, you know, like
- 5:39Speaker 4: Wesley Duke was the ultimately one I always think about
- 5:42Speaker 4: because man, you looked at him, You're like, boy, you
- 5:44Speaker 4: can unlock it.
- 5:45Speaker 1: It's gonna be sweet. They never unlocked it. What what is?
- 5:48Speaker 4: It just been too many guys, it's just been not
- 5:50Speaker 4: worth the investment or what? What's what's happened to that trend?
- 5:53Speaker 1: Leggy?
- 5:54Speaker 3: I think in the you know, like a lot of things,
- 5:59Speaker 3: it was easier not to specialize before. You know, I
- 6:04Speaker 3: think a lot of college football coaches in the world
- 6:07Speaker 3: of nil don't want to be spending a lot of
- 6:10Speaker 3: money in a high end tight end who's also playing hoops.
- 6:14Speaker 3: So I think there's some of that, and I think
- 6:15Speaker 3: it's just I think sometimes we take outliers and we
- 6:20Speaker 3: try to make it repeatable. Like you know, every quarterback
- 6:23Speaker 3: under six feet tall, we always hear, oh, Drew Brees
- 6:27Speaker 3: did it. Well, yeah, but the list is short. You know,
- 6:31Speaker 3: Antonio Gates did it. Julius Thomas did it. You know,
- 6:38Speaker 3: I would think so yeah in the end, because he
- 6:40Speaker 3: didn't play you know, football was not part of his
- 6:43Speaker 3: equation much at all. Julius had had at least played
- 6:47Speaker 3: more football when he came at Portland State when he
- 6:51Speaker 3: came into the league. So I mean there was actual
- 6:54Speaker 3: football tape for me to look at when he came in.
- 6:58Speaker 3: So but we take outliers and we try to make
- 7:01Speaker 3: it look like, well, it's just repeatable, and sometimes it's not.
- 7:05Speaker 3: And I think it's in a sports world, especially big
- 7:10Speaker 3: time college athletics, specialization is what they're paying for, and
- 7:16Speaker 3: that's what they're gonna want no matter what sport you're playing.
- 7:20Speaker 3: That's why I think the next time it happens, it
- 7:23Speaker 3: will be more than Julius Thomas route. It'll be a
- 7:28Speaker 3: Division two, a Division three player where the pressure to
- 7:32Speaker 3: be one thing isn't so great.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Jeff Lakewall d ESPN talking draft here.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Jeff, what is the chatter like amongst the scouting in
- 7:42Speaker 2: front office community about what this weekend's news could do
- 7:47Speaker 2: to the draft status of Ruben Bain.
- 7:50Speaker 3: You know, I don't want to cheap in what happened
- 7:52Speaker 3: in any way, of course, I'm not speaking from that
- 7:55Speaker 3: point of view. It's a horrible thing, but it was.
- 8:02Speaker 3: It did not come up in some of the checks
- 8:05Speaker 3: I made, but it was on the background checks I
- 8:09Speaker 3: have since learned that teams made months ago. This is
- 8:14Speaker 3: information teams have had for weeks, so this will not
- 8:19Speaker 3: be a surprise to any team making those decisions, in fact,
- 8:23Speaker 3: that they've known for so long. I was told he
- 8:27Speaker 3: was asked about it at the combine. So in retrospect, again,
- 8:33Speaker 3: I have a background system I used to check players.
- 8:37Speaker 3: It did not pop on mine, but that's not uncommon.
- 8:41Speaker 3: But it's an adjudicated matter. There's a police report that
- 8:45Speaker 3: this wasn't hidden or buried or any of that. This
- 8:49Speaker 3: was available for teams and they knew about it. So
- 8:54Speaker 3: from a football perspective purely, not from the what happened.
- 8:59Speaker 3: From a football perspective, it won't change his grade because
- 9:04Speaker 3: that grade was set when teams had the information in
- 9:07Speaker 3: hand already.
- 9:08Speaker 2: You still think he's top ten worthy, right because we've
- 9:11Speaker 2: talked about him on the show.
- 9:13Speaker 3: I think from a football perspective, yes, yes, and again
- 9:18Speaker 3: it's it's part of the equation, right, you know, like
- 9:21Speaker 3: medical information off the field has affects different teams different ways.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Some teams may pull him off the board, and already
- 9:31Speaker 3: did that before the news became public. It just it
- 9:35Speaker 3: never would have come up, you know, in discussion before.
- 9:39Speaker 3: So you know those but those decisions were made long
- 9:44Speaker 3: before this became a public public thing.
- 9:47Speaker 4: All right, I'm going to try to get some out
- 9:48Speaker 4: of lay here. If we're going off leg he's top
- 9:51Speaker 4: one hundred, strictly on the top one hundred. The Broncos
- 9:54Speaker 4: pick today is.
- 9:57Speaker 3: I'm not going there yet.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Come on, he's still debating with himself if he's going
- 10:04Speaker 2: to move sixty four six.
- 10:07Speaker 3: You know you you joke about that. But I moved
- 10:10Speaker 3: a guy one spot yesterday. It was the saddest thing
- 10:15Speaker 3: in the history of the world because I acted like
- 10:19Speaker 3: I acted like I was Picasso looking at an empty canvas.
- 10:23Speaker 3: I mean, it was really just an unbelievable amount of angst.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Did you ruin your weekend and then you move the guy?
- 10:29Speaker 4: Once you ruined your weekend to move a guy one
- 10:31Speaker 4: spot was.
- 10:32Speaker 3: That it It didn't quite ruin my weekend. But if
- 10:35Speaker 3: he's picked in the former spot, I'm gonna have a
- 10:37Speaker 3: bad day on Drafted.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Stared at the ceiling, wondering, I'm furious at myself every
- 10:46Speaker 2: time I do it, and I just every year it's
- 10:48Speaker 2: the same thing. All right, it's uh, it's we're at
- 10:51Speaker 2: that stage of the top one hundred, folks, Jeff, what
- 10:54Speaker 2: is this getting published?
- 10:55Speaker 3: By the way, Monday, Sunday Sunday?
- 10:58Speaker 2: Okay, six days away from the top one hundred being
- 11:02Speaker 2: on my style, Yes, okay, guess.
- 11:05Speaker 3: What, Leggy.
- 11:06Speaker 4: As soon as Draft's done on Saturday, you can go
- 11:08Speaker 4: watch your Colorado Mammoth at Ball Arena that night, the
- 11:11Speaker 4: twenty fifth, seven o'clock they host the first round game. Awesome, yeah, rock,
- 11:19Speaker 4: but you know you just lost your tickets. Pal, But
- 11:21Speaker 4: you know what, that's not the that's not the name.
- 11:24Speaker 2: If he's there, then he can't hear Andy Lindall on
- 11:27Speaker 2: the broadcast.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Oh he can't.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Some of us know how to get ahold of the
- 11:32Speaker 4: suite with the TV.
- 11:33Speaker 3: And wow, okay, so.
- 11:36Speaker 4: All right, some of us are fancying all right, sounds
- 11:38Speaker 4: like none of us in this room, but some of
- 11:40Speaker 4: us like getting the VIP.
- 11:44Speaker 1: All right, Hey, Jeff, good stuff, man, we appreciate it.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Yeah, trouble fellas, we'll see all right, we're over here
- 11:51Speaker 2: grilling legwold on Uh, Max Klay.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Oh, I get it. That's all right.
- 11:56Speaker 4: Get the sixty third or what do we have the
- 11:58Speaker 4: sixty fourth guy on the board
