• 0:16
[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to Cinema Hounds, a lower-hounds podcast, and Happy Filipino American History Month.
• 0:23
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm your host, Alicia, and while I'm not Filipino or Filipino American myself, I will be joined in just a moment by a guest who is, Paolo of the Oscar's Death Race podcast, who many of you might recognize from coverage of Oscar's Seasons Past.
• 0:38
[SPEAKER_00]: He is joining me to talk about the brand new animated feature for gotten island.
• 0:43
[SPEAKER_00]: especially how this film uses Filipino culture and mythology to tell the original story of the trans-dimensional adventures of two friends from the 90s out for one last wild party on the eve of new adult responsibilities.
• 0:59
[SPEAKER_00]: Almost the entire first half of the conversation you're about to listen to is actually spoiler free from the film.
• 1:05
[SPEAKER_00]: We set up the story, discuss the production, and introduce some basic Filipino mythology and cultural touchstones, and talk about who we think will enjoy this tale, and why we think you might want to watch.
• 1:20
[SPEAKER_00]: And then stick around after this spoiler band is lifted for a deeper dive into all the lore, plus more recommendations.
• 1:27
[SPEAKER_00]: to sample Filipino storytelling this month.
• 1:30
[SPEAKER_00]: Without further ado, time to head through the portal to Nikali.
• 1:38
[SPEAKER_00]: And I am joined by Paolo from the Oscar's Death Race podcast.
• 1:42
  [SPEAKER_00]: Welcome, Paolo.
• 1:43
  [SPEAKER_00]: Welcome back, actually.
• 1:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, thanks for having me back always glad to come on Laura Hounds and talk about movies I'm interested in.
• 1:50
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, this one's particularly special to me, so happy to talk about it.
• 1:55
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so please tell us why is this one in particular special to you?
• 1:58
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so, you know, myself, I'm a Filipino American, right?
• 2:02
[SPEAKER_01]: I was born in the US.
• 2:04
[SPEAKER_01]: I did spend about three years of my childhood back in the Philippines, and then moved back to the States when I was eight.
• 2:09
[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm somewhere what you'd call like not quite second generation, but also not quite first generation either.
• 2:16
[SPEAKER_01]: So I call myself 1.5 generation, right?
• 2:19
[SPEAKER_01]: And this is a, you know, obviously forgot in the island is a film kind of centered in Filipino America or Filipino mythology, specifically.
• 2:27
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's said in the Philippines, right?
• 2:29
[SPEAKER_01]: I believe satellite in the 90s or so.
• 2:32
[SPEAKER_01]: So probably this honestly would be probably.
• 2:36
[SPEAKER_01]: around the generation maybe a little bit younger than my parents, maybe like half a decade or so younger than my parents, when they were making the leap from the Philippines to the U.S., and you know this whole other layer which we'll talk about later about, you know, Filipinos and overseas Filipino workers, you know, something like, I was doing some research and it's like, you know, 10% or more of all Filipinos in the world live outside the Philippines, 10% of the
• 3:05
[SPEAKER_01]: idea, what I think is coming to my central thesis about why this film is so important to me about how this is almost a story about how you, there's a memory that the old generations tell you about a place that they've been and then how you relate to that place and how you pass on that story.
• 3:23
[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, yeah, I think that's, I'll leave it at that for now, but we'll get in a little bit more.
• 3:28
[SPEAKER_00]: Were you told stories like this growing up?
• 3:31
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was pretty fortunate, and obviously I did spend time back in the Philippines, and I'm relatively lucky in that my parents when we came back to the States, we ended up in Jacksonville, Florida, and Jacksonville has a pretty large Filipino population, you know, because of the rates between the U.S. and the Philippines, Filipinos were allowed to serve in the U.S. Navy.
• 3:50
[SPEAKER_01]: Even if they weren't citizens, it was a path to citizenship.
• 3:53
[SPEAKER_01]: And there's a big Navy based in Jacksonville.
• 3:56
[SPEAKER_01]: So a lot of Filipinos, when they were tired from the Navy, choose to land in Jacksonville for their retirement.
• 4:01
[SPEAKER_01]: And so there's a pretty strong Filipino population where I grew up.
• 4:04
[SPEAKER_01]: My parents had a lot of work, quite a bit of them, you know, teaching me in my siblings Filipino or the Gallag.
• 4:11
[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm not completely fluent, but I can definitely conversational enough.
• 4:14
[SPEAKER_01]: And we had all of these books growing up.
• 4:18
[SPEAKER_01]: of Filipino mythology, and so, you know, this, like, the stories of Enkanto, and Asuna, Asuna, Asuna, so much, but like Enkanto, in Duwata, which is like, God's, we're part of my childhood.
• 4:28
[SPEAKER_01]: And this actually, you know, in the beginning of Fugata Island, there's a scene where Joe's character is telling her classmates about the story of the Mananangal, right?
• 4:38
[SPEAKER_01]: um, you know, with the slides everything.
• 4:39
[SPEAKER_01]: And in eighth grade, we were signed a project to like do a presentation on some sort of mythology.
• 4:46
[SPEAKER_01]: And most people did it in a group project like like North mythology, Greek mythology, Indian mythology.
• 4:52
[SPEAKER_01]: I being the special snowflake I was one of my own and the massive, you know, 30 minute presentation on Filipino mythology and all of the different creatures and so on there.
• 5:01
[SPEAKER_01]: And so it's almost like that.
• 5:03
  [SPEAKER_01]: That's
• 5:08
[SPEAKER_00]: And you, I mean, this film would have already been on my radar anyway, it's one of the, I mean, it's definitely dream work's most serious contender for an Oscar nomination.
• 5:18
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm hoping it's one of the final five, which what is your final five animated feature predictions at this point.
• 5:24
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I, so on the Oscars death face podcast, you know, right now we're obviously in the nomination yet, but I started looking at like historical president for the things that that we'll bring in to the final five.
• 5:35
  [SPEAKER_01]: You'll see a Pixar film, right?
• 5:37
[SPEAKER_01]: So probably Toy Story Five.
• 5:38
[SPEAKER_01]: This is the one to two and stop motion film.
• 5:43
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, like us.
• 5:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, this year would Wildwood.
• 5:46
[SPEAKER_01]: Netflix usually will have a film.
• 5:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Some people are saying Reagan, but I actually think that in waves This fence film out of can and anasy might be their pay because there's also usually two international films as well So in waves might be one and then ironborgue is probably the strongest once another fence film that did well with that tank as well
• 6:06
[SPEAKER_01]: Tangles would be another one.
• 6:07
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's Canadian, so we'll see.
• 6:09
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it'd be probably between Iron Boy and Tangles for that last lot, for the other or another.
• 6:16
[SPEAKER_01]: My hope is that in the past couple of years, DreamWorks has been on off, on off, last year or so, the year before was put into the last twist by the same directors here, so hopefully this is an on-ear for DreamWorks.
• 6:28
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, so you were having championing this, especially I would have been watching it anyway, regardless, but you were just telling me this is like your second of three podcasts plus you're writing an article about this each taking a different angle, I believe.
• 6:45
[SPEAKER_01]: more or less I mean though that would be some bleed I mean yeah it's it's you know happy Filipino American history month by I think by the time this comes out you know or soon after october it's full piano music.
• 6:55
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah no I'm planning to release this just to start october for Filipino history month.
• 7:00
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah and so you know it's it's one of those cases like you know several years ago when crazy with Asians came out and there was this big community
• 7:07
[SPEAKER_01]: push to get the boost the box office of that of that film in particular, which kind of so Hollywood, like, hey, Asian-American stories are important, you know, there is, there is universality found in cultural specificity, right?
• 7:23
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's nice having a face similar and these little nods toward your culture represented on the big screen, right?
• 7:29
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, not everyone gets to have that.
• 7:30
[SPEAKER_01]: And so, you know, it's nice to be able to support films like this that
• 7:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously going to be excited about it.
• 7:39
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, and that's why I'm also hoping, I mean, I think that this will get into our fresh shakes in just a second.
• 7:45
[SPEAKER_00]: And we're staying spoiler free.
• 7:47
[SPEAKER_00]: I'll have said all that in the intro, but we'll stay spoiler free until we give you that warning.
• 7:53
[SPEAKER_00]: But I aside from the fact that I just really love this, if I, you know, there's been a lot of talk, of course, on like the death bracelets discord that we're both on about, you know, water predictions for this and the
• 8:09
[SPEAKER_00]: If I'm being honest, Toy Story 5, I mean, whatever it was fine, but it was like Toy Story 5.
• 8:16
[SPEAKER_00]: I was kind of excited.
• 8:18
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, what are they going to have to say about AI?
• 8:19
[SPEAKER_00]: It turns out not much.
• 8:21
[SPEAKER_00]: Hoppers didn't do much for me.
• 8:23
  [SPEAKER_00]: Hex, I look good.
• 8:26
[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, none of us have seen Hex yet.
• 8:27
[SPEAKER_00]: It looks like it's geared toward the younger version of me specifically, but I can
• 8:35
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, for my work, I'm doing a presentation about, you know, Filipino Americans and culture and pop culture and so on, and the co-director of HECTS coming up is actually Filipino American, and I believe it's an early version of HECTS actually had the main care to be a Filipino American boy, actually.
• 8:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, Haley Steinfeld, who plays the lead actors now, is actually I believe one eighth Filipino actor.
• 8:58
  [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
• 8:58
  [SPEAKER_00]: No, that makes sense.
• 9:00
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and she's also, yeah, she's one eighth black too, right?
• 9:03
[SPEAKER_00]: Because she's cast in sinners adds that as well.
• 9:06
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but yeah, anyway, that looks like my cup of tea, but I can see that for Oscar's voters, it might go directly head to head with this film in terms of people seeing their being similarities with the being, you know,
• 9:20
[SPEAKER_00]: a girlfriend of going through a portal sort of situation.
• 9:23
[SPEAKER_00]: And in that case, I'm actually I'm rooting for this one because I think, you know, it has the originality that's specificity, as you said, and not just in the cultural elements, but also in like the animation, and all right, let's get into it.
• 9:38
[SPEAKER_00]: Spoiler-free setting up the premise of this film,
• 9:42
[SPEAKER_00]: Forgot Nyland, no memory left behind, while celebrating their last night together, high school graduates and best friends, Joe and Riza stumble upon a mysterious portal that transports them to the fantastical island of Nikole.
• 9:54
[SPEAKER_00]: When they discover that the memories of their entire friendship are the price for returning home, Joe and Riza must race to find a way to leave the island before they forget each other forever.
• 10:05
[SPEAKER_00]: And what's your overall spoiler-free thoughts on this?
• 10:10
[SPEAKER_00]: Why should people watch this film?
• 10:12
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, my pits would be, even if you're not necessarily specifically version Filipino mythology or even Filipino culture, right?
• 10:19
[SPEAKER_01]: It's, you know, I mean, how much of how many people knew about, you know, the demons of Korea before watching tape up the even hunters, right?
• 10:27
[SPEAKER_01]: But you know, this film is at its core, a story, again, that has, I meant some universality and cultural specificity, a story with universal resonance of themes of memories, self-identity, friendship, self-determination, how your memory influences who you are.
• 10:42
[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, the best pitch I saw, I'm going to admit, they kind of steal this from letterbox.
• 10:47
[SPEAKER_01]: It's basically the hangover meets eternal sunshine of the spotless mind in a jolly beat.
• 10:52
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, that is, that's, that's, that's the best pitch I've seen in the
• 10:57
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, my letter box review starts with from the moment the animations changed when she ran across the desks in the opening scene.
• 11:04
[SPEAKER_00]: I watched the rest of this movie with a big shitty didn't grin on my face.
• 11:08
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so like the, my, yeah, the theater I was in everyone was having a great time.
• 11:14
[SPEAKER_00]: Before the movie started, I was a little worried about the teenagers to my rights, but they were super into this film.
• 11:27
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, it made me like cry within the first, I don't know, how long that opening, you know, sequence was, but I found myself in tears like twice during the opening sequence alone.
• 11:39
[SPEAKER_00]: And then it was just, it was, it was delightful and fun throughout.
• 11:42
[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, I, I see a lot of the things that made people really love, um, put some boots the last wish.
• 11:49
[SPEAKER_00]: Except this one, you don't need to watch a bunch of other movies first.
• 11:53
[SPEAKER_00]: when you can just see straight off.
• 11:55
[SPEAKER_00]: It is you mentioned it said during the 90s, which I've never been to the Philippines, unfortunately, but I was the 90s where my childhood, I'm a bit younger than those these characters, I guess, but I just think the other nail devives with this pink
• 12:14
[SPEAKER_00]: I love the way, as someone who's not versed in Filipino mythology, I like the way it handles it.
• 12:24
[SPEAKER_00]: We were talking, you recommended to me a Netflix show called Tresse, which is an animated series.
• 12:30
[SPEAKER_00]: It also incorporates a lot of Filipino mythology, set in the Philippines.
• 12:35
[SPEAKER_00]: that one it was like I was like wow there's so much I've felt sometimes overwhelmed by it but here even though there was so much it was just like some things it's okay if I don't get certain details but I understand this new creature that's been introduced and understand what they're all about you know so
• 12:54
[SPEAKER_00]: I thought it handled that really well, but I think what really makes it universal is is the characters that the every single character in there is just some degree flawed and to some degree also likable.
• 13:09
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's true.
• 13:09
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 13:10
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's a very realistic character.
• 13:12
  [SPEAKER_01]: They're not one-dimensional.
• 13:15
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it's just the mix of animation styles was spectacular.
• 13:19
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I know this codes back to the Filipino history of animation.
• 13:25
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you want to talk a little bit about that?
• 13:27
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so Philippines has been part of obviously people think about Japan and how transformers, movies, or he-man was like animated in Japan and then brought over the states, the cell toys.
• 13:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Philippines actually had a barbaric there.
• 13:43
[SPEAKER_01]: They were outsourcing armage in the Philippines.
• 13:44
[SPEAKER_01]: It was originally a company called Phil cartoons.
• 13:47
[SPEAKER_01]: It actually later changed to become top-draw animation.
• 13:51
[SPEAKER_01]: I think actually fun fact, my wife's nephew actually is an animated in the Philippines.
• 13:57
[SPEAKER_01]: And he's the work for it, top-draw.
• 14:00
[SPEAKER_01]: And they are the ones who are responsible for the most recent Myel Pony, Fencebiz Magic series, right?
• 14:06
[SPEAKER_01]: But they do a lot of outsourced enemies as well there.
• 14:09
[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, like I mentioned before, right?
• 14:10
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a pretty strong Filipino diaspora in animation.
• 14:15
[SPEAKER_01]: In Pixar, you know, you have like Ronnie Del Carmen, he was the co-director of Inside Out.
• 14:21
[SPEAKER_01]: you have various folks like Nelson Bohol or Jeanito La Cruz, you know, there's a, you know, in finding Nemo, right?
• 14:28
[SPEAKER_01]: If you look in the tank, where Nemo is, this little Nippahai Kubo, in there is a not the Filipino animators, or like when they go the, you know, peace sermon 42, while be way Sydney, that's actually a not to Filipinos who with the accent we call fishermen,
• 14:44
  [SPEAKER_01]: Peace or man, right?
• 14:46
[SPEAKER_01]: So that's kind of like the little nod there.
• 14:47
  [SPEAKER_01]: So there's a strong Filipino diaspora.
• 14:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Even, you know, in DC and Marvel comics, there's a number of Filipino and Filipino Americans who work in that scene as well.
• 14:55
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, Philippines has always been involved in the anime's history.
• 15:00
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's so cool how they mix up the animation styles here, where, I mean, I guess it's part of it, what reminded me, but also did it in a different way to things that they did in K-pop demon hunters in terms of like layering the 2D anime over the 3D animation and just for tone and for personality and, you know, to convey.
• 15:26
[SPEAKER_01]: You have a character with their face down and a like 2D anime version of talking to you on top Yeah, I mean this definitely I will say that like spider verse, obviously like a different film And but you know spider verses influence on anime so this has just had like a long week And I think this continues to push the envelope with what's going on there
• 15:44
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, it's a really just visually absolutely stunning stuff going on really like interesting intriguing cool stuff and the soundtrack to like the music was great.
• 15:54
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a score from Nathan Matthew David, which I know used a bunch of indigenous instruments and also I loved the way they used karaoke do I mean I assume this is also a cultural throwback.
• 16:05
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
• 16:05
  [SPEAKER_01]: No.
• 16:06
[SPEAKER_01]: So first on the on the end.
• 16:07
[SPEAKER_01]: So like Nathan David Matthew David actually I believe is a protege of Ludwig Gorenson actually.
• 16:13
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:13
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:14
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:14
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:14
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:14
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.

  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.

  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:15
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:15
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:15
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:15
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:15
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:15
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:15
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:15
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:16
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:16
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:16
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:16
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:16
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:17
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:17
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:17
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:17
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:18
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:18
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:18
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:18
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:18
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:19
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:19
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:19
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:19
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:19
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
• 16:19
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
• 16:19
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
• 16:20
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
• 16:20
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
• 16:20
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
• 16:20
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
• 16:20
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
• 16:20
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
• 16:21
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
• 16:21
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
• 16:21
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
• 16:21
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
• 16:21
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh.

  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
• 16:24
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh.

• 16:28
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
• 16:28
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
• 16:28
[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to his fourth nomination for four scores.
• 16:31
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, and one of Gorenson's big thing is going and doing kind of like field research of going in, you know, for Odyssey, he used, you know, to this like only instruments that would have been around at the time for his scores, right?
• 16:44
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, Nathan made Matthew David in the similar thing of going back to the Philippines and and capturing the indigenous instruments to use the kind of against the similar style.
• 16:53
[SPEAKER_01]: So, I don't think it's currently a fun 21st score, but I believe if, you know, if, hey, if you're going to go on some of the kind of, for doing this kind of thing, maybe do the same thing for, for you know, for the Oscars.
• 17:02
  [SPEAKER_01]: And we'll see.
• 17:03
[SPEAKER_00]: animated films do better in music than they do in other categories.
• 17:07
  [SPEAKER_01]: True, yeah.
• 17:09
[SPEAKER_01]: But as far as karaoke goes, I mean, Philopinos love karaoke.
• 17:12
[SPEAKER_01]: There's like this big, there's almost like a joke.
• 17:14
[SPEAKER_01]: We're like, you know, Philopinos have, for some reason, always have like a singing or dancing scene.
• 17:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Like if you ever watch like Anthony Bourdain's, like parts unknown, more no elevations, he did the couple episodes in the Philippines.
• 17:27
[SPEAKER_01]: And I believe in one of those episodes he talked about like one of the biggest exports of the Philippines are cover bands actually if you were like a hotel bar somewhere And there's a cover band playing odds are they might be actually from the Philippines and you know Philippines is loves singing, right?
• 17:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Infirmously those the the infamous my way crime
• 17:46
[SPEAKER_01]: martyrs where in the Philippines people would be upset at how someone sang my way so it led to some unfortunate incidents so that actually is kind of banned but I mean even in college when I was at when I was in college you know or felt like now kind of like the go to
• 18:04
[SPEAKER_01]: the go-to past time for our group, like the go-to karaoke, even going up when I was younger and you know me and my siblings we didn't go out as much but you know we had we had the magic magic mic karaoke in our in our living room and we were just seeing
• 18:18
[SPEAKER_01]: karaoke on the weekend, basically.
• 18:20
[SPEAKER_01]: So there's always karaoke going on.
• 18:23
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll call out, I think, the two songs specifically that I know this in the film is one is on the wings of love.
• 18:29
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a famous Filipino cover of it by Eugene Velasquez, that I think that that is trying to emulate.
• 18:35
[SPEAKER_01]: And then obviously, journeys don't stop believing.
• 18:38
  [SPEAKER_01]: I think that's a karaoke anthem.
• 18:40
[SPEAKER_01]: Sarata Arnold Pineda, who is the Filipino frontman of journey as well.
• 18:44
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, OK.
• 18:46
  [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
• 18:46
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was used.
• 18:47
[SPEAKER_00]: That was became a throughline and part.
• 18:49
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I love how they weave the music into the plot too.
• 18:53
[SPEAKER_00]: And, and I'll just say, like, this isn't a spoiler, but Joe ends up carrying the boom box around basically the whole time and I just love the way it keeps coming back.
• 19:03
[SPEAKER_01]: I may or may not have bought the AMC popcorn bucket that's modeled after the boombox.
• 19:13
[SPEAKER_00]: That's a more practical shape than those popcorn buckets often are.
• 19:18
[SPEAKER_00]: Any other songs you want to shout out?
• 19:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, the soundtrack as a whole is a stack pack.
• 19:24
[SPEAKER_01]: I know, sat out to the Universal Music Group, the VP of Film Music, Angela Luce, who is also Filipino American.
• 19:30
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, she's done interviews about how she took this film as an opportunity to showcase both Filipino and Filipino diaspora artists.
• 19:38
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, there's two original songs on the film.
• 19:41
[SPEAKER_01]: One is a parallel world by the Filipino girl group, Bini.
• 19:45
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you may have seen them earlier this year.
• 19:47
[SPEAKER_01]: They were the first Filipino American group at Coachella.
• 19:50
[SPEAKER_01]: I think they've taken the videos down since then, but when the videos were up, I believe they were like the second or third most watched act of the YouTube videos on the Coachella channel.
• 20:01
[SPEAKER_01]: I think behind either Bieber or Katzai, who, by the way, Katzai Sophia, who's currently on Hayed is from Katzai.
• 20:10
[SPEAKER_01]: At the climax of the film, there's a beautiful cover of IN excesses,
• 20:15
[SPEAKER_01]: those these Filipino American as well, you know, back the parallel world, you know, Bini, that song was produced both by Nathan Mathew David, who uses the Joe Rice Motif as kind of like the melody for the film, but also Filipino American EDM producers Sonne was sobby as well.
• 20:33
[SPEAKER_01]: And of course, there's a version on the soundtrack with Leah Salonga, because of course you have Leah Salonga sitting on your soundtrack, right?
• 20:39
[SPEAKER_00]: Right, because she plays one of the major characters we'll talk about.
• 20:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and then, you know, lead actress, you know, her, right, who's previously been Oscar winning for one of her songs, mode of the original song, BRB, that plays like right before the credits, alongside co-lead Lisa Sobarano, the music videos, kind of like just them having to find in the Philippines.
• 20:59
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, there's also other covers as well, you know, SB19, who I believe this is like, this song also sort of in the middle of the film, we'll talk about the scene maybe later.
• 21:08
[SPEAKER_01]: But they were the first Filipino act at Lola Palusa, and they were a Filipino boy group.
• 21:12
[SPEAKER_01]: They did a cover of Rap Anthem, Manga Kaba Bayenko, or by Contrimen, by Filipino Rap Legend, the Francis M. And then Rubio Barra, who is the tiny desk concert winner from 2025, see the song over the credits called Salibaheako, or I'm Savit, basically.
• 21:32
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's a really nice hip-hop anthem.
• 21:34
[SPEAKER_01]: And definitely recommend check out Rubio Barra's stuff in general.
• 21:37
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, this is like a pretty who's who of like Filipino American and Filipino artists at the moment.
• 21:42
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, probably the only Filipino notable Filipino singers missing from the soundtrack, probably our Olivia Rodrigo and Bruno Mars.
• 21:51
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, yeah, I don't know most of the names on this list, but I still, even if you don't recognize the names, it was just a banging soundtrack, basically.
• 22:02
[SPEAKER_00]: It's, I would say, it's just a good time at the theater.
• 22:06
[SPEAKER_00]: It was great to watch with a group of people because everyone was responding and having fun together and crying together.
• 22:12
[SPEAKER_00]: And we had like, we had all generations at my theater.
• 22:16
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what your experience was like.
• 22:19
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, mine was a pretty, pretty good mix.
• 22:21
[SPEAKER_01]: There were some younger kids, right, and their parents, and obviously a lot of Filipinos coming out as well to support the film.
• 22:29
[SPEAKER_01]: So there was a bit of a no or Easter in the New York when this happened.
• 22:33
[SPEAKER_01]: So it was a little bit windy to get to the theater, but some people still made it out.
• 22:37
  [SPEAKER_00]: Hmm.
• 22:38
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, my, I noticed my row, because I don't usually notice much beyond my row.
• 22:44
[SPEAKER_00]: I think I was sitting in the middle, and to the left of me was mostly, I think, one extended Filipino family from, like, grandparents to young children, and then to the right of me was a bunch of Dutch teenagers.
• 22:56
[SPEAKER_00]: And both sides were having equal fun throughout the film, so.
• 23:00
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, would you, I mean, I guess this appeals to all age groups, like we are obviously adults who had a lot of fun with it.
• 23:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, I think if you're an animation fan, I think, you know, I've heard some like how scary is it for for kids maybe.
• 23:14
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I would say maybe like if you're like, you know, there definitely is one of the things with the box offices like there was like relatively low number of kids under 12 who are going to this.
• 23:28
[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, one of the maybe critiques of the film that people have pointed out is maybe it's a little bit too, uh, spastic or frenetic, right?
• 23:35
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's pacing a little bit, we're maybe a little bit like Gen Z to the alpha coded.
• 23:39
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, or ADHD coded.
• 23:41
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 23:41
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 23:41
[SPEAKER_01]: Which is, you know, not as all you're bathing, but it is, you know, definitely for some people might be a little bit of a turnoff, right, if you want something a little bit more slow-paced.
• 23:50
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, you know, some of the creatures, especially, um, the manalan gal can be maybe a little bit intense for kids, maybe like other six, maybe maybe a little bit too young.
• 23:59
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so maybe about what we want to be closer like maybe eight or so I would say would be maybe a little bit more tolerant of how scary it might potentially be for them.
• 24:08
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think it's scarier than K-pop team and hunters?
• 24:13
[SPEAKER_01]: I could see it getting a little bit intense.
• 24:14
[SPEAKER_00]: There's definitely- This is a one character, yeah.
• 24:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, one character, and then definitely some, there's a feel a little good about a bodily fluid humor going on.
• 24:24
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but that's like, oh, oh, kids movies are like that these days.
• 24:27
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, it's like, yeah.
• 24:30
[SPEAKER_00]: So this was actually less offensive to me than other ones I've seen recently, like, minions.
• 24:35
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
• 24:36
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 24:36
  [SPEAKER_00]: It's a sponge Bob.
• 24:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there is a, it's a, a certain level of violet, like not not super violent, obviously not super gory or anything, but there's definitely like a bunch of intense acts.
• 24:46
[SPEAKER_01]: I say, probably a little bit more intense than than K-pop demon hunters, I think.
• 24:50
[SPEAKER_01]: This is just a hair, I think.
• 24:51
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, especially the way they animate that one character.
• 24:55
[SPEAKER_01]: They really animate the, the main body here to be, uh, to be rather intense, I think.
• 25:01
[SPEAKER_01]: And really sell how scary it can be, like some, some of the sequences will get into it,
• 25:07
[SPEAKER_01]: could be a little intense, I could say.
• 25:09
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
• 25:11
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I'll say the length of the movie was an hour and 49 minutes.
• 25:14
[SPEAKER_00]: It didn't feel, I mean, I was thoroughly engrossed throughout.
• 25:18
[SPEAKER_00]: I wasn't looking at my watch at all.
• 25:21
[SPEAKER_00]: So I think it felt like a good length to me, the pacing felt good to me.
• 25:25
[SPEAKER_01]: And you think they could have added more a little bit maybe at the end so that you know, a little bit more of a more of a wrap-up conclusion I think versus you.
• 25:33
  [SPEAKER_00]: One final party?
• 25:34
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, something like that.
• 25:37
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so the writer directors, we've reference them publicly, but just to shout them out, it's Joe Crawford, and uh, is a genuine Mercado?
• 25:45
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, genuine.
• 25:46
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, genuine.
• 25:46
[SPEAKER_01]: I think we probably be the way the pronounce it.
• 25:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, yeah, in general is Filipino American, right his parents emigrated from the Philippines, uh, Joel is obviously not Filipino, but his wife is actually Filipino American as well.
• 25:56
[SPEAKER_01]: So this is obviously a very personal story for both of them.
• 26:00
[SPEAKER_00]: And they met while they were both doing work on Kung Fu Penta 2.
• 26:04
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, they've worked on lots of dream works films, but they're most famous together for being the people behind Puss and Boots, the last wish in 2022.
• 26:13
[SPEAKER_00]: Was an Oscar nominee, was just really well received in terms of reviews and everything.
• 26:19
[SPEAKER_00]: So, but I think, from my perspective, this is a leveling up, of some of the things that we're doing there.
• 26:26
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for sure.
• 26:28
[SPEAKER_00]: So this is, as I said, DreamWorks, which is part of Universal.
• 26:31
[SPEAKER_00]: What do we think about how they handled the marketing?
• 26:34
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, on the one hand, I feel like it's not enough, but on the other hand, there's things I don't know about, like, my mom's, I told my mom, I was going to this movie, and she said, oh, they watched that on Big Brother.
• 26:45
  [SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, well, that's smart.
• 26:46
  [SPEAKER_00]: That's a good way to market.
• 26:47
  [SPEAKER_00]: But,
• 26:47
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, there's definitely crossover, like Jolly B, the big fast food chicken chicken joint from the Philippines, had a crossover here, right?
• 26:54
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, marketing is hard, advertising is hard.
• 26:58
[SPEAKER_01]: I work in digital advertising, so I know just like the way that things are targeted towards people, like I'm clearly like Filipino American, living in the city knows that they know I like movies, I'm going to get inundated with ads for this thing.
• 27:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Right, but I've also seen anecdotal stories online of like other Filipinos just like not seeing ads for this right, which is kind of crazy and then you know some of the again The target audience for like what is this Phil who is this film targeted towards right is it targeted toward adult like animation is it targeted more towards younger kids.
• 27:29
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know, we would say it could be seen by anyone, but in terms of like how did who are they
• 27:36
[SPEAKER_00]: uh... dream works choosing to target is is is is is is kind of i made perhaps made could have been a little bit more clearly the fine they guess hmm i i do think that it was smart of them to like their screening it's smartly aside from the big brother thing they did some surprise work in progress screenings at cinemacon in april and anisee in june anisee being the biggest animation festival in the world
• 27:58
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they also had a, they also had a geocomicon and the vanilla, you know, that's a little film festival in LA as well.
• 28:04
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, they definitely made the rounds.
• 28:06
[SPEAKER_00]: It's been well received everywhere.
• 28:08
[SPEAKER_00]: So, it got the buzz going in that regard.
• 28:11
[SPEAKER_00]: But then it released wide on September 25th.
• 28:14
[SPEAKER_00]: So, it's a brand new release of this point.
• 28:15
[SPEAKER_00]: It's been out one week and so far.
• 28:18
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's getting great reviews, Rotten Tomatoes, currently has 95% from critics, 96% from audiences.
• 28:26
  [SPEAKER_00]: Metacritic is always a more conservative 73 and 7.4 letterbox, a very strong 3.9 and IMDB a 7.8.
• 28:35
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's really being well received.
• 28:38
[SPEAKER_00]: The budget was 80 million, which is not insane for this type of move for like a dream works, you know, level movie.
• 28:47
[SPEAKER_00]: The box office, not what we would hope yet.
• 28:51
[SPEAKER_00]: We need some strong word of mouth.
• 28:53
[SPEAKER_00]: I know you just did, you were saying yesterday, you recorded an episode about the box office, but I would say that's there.
• 29:00
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's 20.6 million globally for opening weekend.
• 29:03
[SPEAKER_01]: 20.6 million globally, 13 million domestic, meaning North America, right.
• 29:08
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, one fun fact is actually opened higher than the Odyssey did in the Philippines, actually.
• 29:14
[SPEAKER_01]: So at the very least, it's resonating with the Filipino audience, that's not always a guarantee, like crazy which Asians was I mentioned before, you know, saddened Singapore, did terribly in Singapore.
• 29:23
[SPEAKER_01]: So Filipino, like, you know, America, like, our Asian American films don't always translate to the Asian countries of origin, right?
• 29:31
[SPEAKER_01]: So the fact that this is able to translate I think is a good thing.
• 29:34
[SPEAKER_01]: This is a tough weekend in general.
• 29:36
[SPEAKER_01]: There was a lot of competition.
• 29:37
  [SPEAKER_01]: We had the Avengers.
• 29:38
[SPEAKER_01]: We released, which did crazy numbers.
• 29:40
  [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry.
• 29:41
[SPEAKER_01]: No, I think like, doomsday might break a billion dollars in the US, which would be the first, just based on the reception of the encore here.
• 29:49
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, you also have the Robert Pattinson.
• 29:51
  [SPEAKER_01]: Time, movie.
• 29:52
  [SPEAKER_01]: You have Brad Pitt.
• 29:54
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and his like dog movie.
• 29:56
[SPEAKER_01]: This year, we get your resident evil continuing to do pretty well.
• 30:00
[SPEAKER_01]: a lot of competition, but I also went back and looked at historically how late September animated films have done, and there honestly, like, 20 million is probably the ceiling or so, right?
• 30:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you know, transformers one a couple years ago, the 24 million, a Paw Patrol 13 million, a bomb removal right before a pandemic was about 20 million.
• 30:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's like on Ninjago movie,
• 30:28
[SPEAKER_01]: Those are all films that have some sort of IP attacks to them.
• 30:31
[SPEAKER_01]: Probably the most successful animated film in this window has been wild robot, which was Oscar nominated, also my dream works.
• 30:38
[SPEAKER_01]: But that was based on a children's book, right?
• 30:40
  [SPEAKER_01]: That was very popular.
• 30:41
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, I think this is definitely one where being an original IP,
• 30:47
[SPEAKER_01]: It always was going to have a bit of an uphill struggle and in a lot of competition.
• 30:51
[SPEAKER_01]: It does have the benefit of having a pretty clear October.
• 30:56
[SPEAKER_01]: At the theater, there's no real kids movie coming out until I believe Cadden the Hat in November.
• 31:01
[SPEAKER_01]: So it definitely said to have a little bit more for one way.
• 31:04
[SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, the other thing I'm thinking just kind of strategically for dream works, you know, they need to, they like, they could keep going back, you know, and they are going back to like strike and like the older IPs, but at some point, they need to make something new, so at some point after like bite the bullet and create some new IP and
• 31:22
[SPEAKER_01]: I could see this, maybe even if it doesn't do that well in theaters, you know, having a second life becoming a co-classic, getting a follow-in on streaming, right?
• 31:31
[SPEAKER_01]: It'll probably come to pivot in about a month or so.
• 31:35
[SPEAKER_01]: Probably beyond peacock, they're streaming service by,
• 31:38
[SPEAKER_01]: late January, probably, and then by, you know, probably April May next year, it'll definitely probably pop off when it eventually hits Netflix, as part of the day with no.
• 31:47
[SPEAKER_01]: So I think you'll have a good, long life, get good reviews, and hopefully build up a, hopefully build a new IP for DreamWorks to continue this universe in.
• 31:58
[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, the last that I would say is that, you know, person boots doing so well, I could also see this being a kind of like that one for you, one for me model, right?
• 32:05
[SPEAKER_01]: We're like, okay, you guys Joel and Jan Well, you did great with person boots.
• 32:09
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll let you do the film you want to make.
• 32:12
[SPEAKER_01]: And then we'll go back to making the sequel stuff, right?
• 32:14
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I would rather more of this than, I mean, I like to the possum boots one, but to be honest, most of that series buttons together, this to me is so vivid and the characters are, I mean, I also, I don't mind if they want to do something completely different with new characters because this is.
• 32:32
[SPEAKER_00]: It is a complete story here, but also would be fun to go back.
• 32:36
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think I saw they have ideas for a sequel if they were ever one.
• 32:39
[SPEAKER_00]: I can imagine, I can imagine, but I think that this is going to continue to get good word of mouth.
• 32:44
[SPEAKER_00]: Here we are trying doing our bit with a good word of mouth.
• 32:48
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I'll say if you haven't seen it yet and you want a fun and grossing funny visually captivating time with the theater, this is a way to go.
• 33:04
[SPEAKER_00]: But before we let those spoiler-free people go, we're going to save most of our mythology talk for the other side of the spoiler warning.
• 33:12
[SPEAKER_00]: But I thought we could do just share a quick
• 33:15
[SPEAKER_00]: intro to Filipino mythology for those who have not seen the film yet, but just to give them a little bit of background.
• 33:23
[SPEAKER_00]: So just a couple top-level concepts and then we'll talk more about all the creatures and movie stuff once we talk more about this
• 33:35
[SPEAKER_00]: This is, is this a new place, is this a known place in Italy?
• 33:40
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's not, it's not really a known place.
• 33:41
[SPEAKER_01]: So the way they actually tackle mythology in the film is it's pretty interesting.
• 33:45
[SPEAKER_01]: So like early on in the film, Lola, right, the grandmother caring very many times, that like, hey, people have forgotten these stories, right?
• 33:52
  [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
• 33:53
[SPEAKER_01]: And honestly, that's probably the one thing that probably is just factually knocked through, uh, of life in the Philippines.
• 34:00
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, obviously the Philippines is like 90% Catholic, right, there's like a muslim population in the southern part of the Philippines.
• 34:07
[SPEAKER_01]: But you know, and yeah, Philippines very Catholic was up Jesus, if you know you know.
• 34:12
[SPEAKER_01]: But you know, it's not as separate.
• 34:13
[SPEAKER_01]: There actually is a going back to the indigenous days, right?
• 34:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Before Magellan, white came and even while the Spanish were ruling over the Filipino indigenous folk,
• 34:24
[SPEAKER_01]: There is always been a level of animism, spiritual animism in the Philippines that kind of continues here where you think, you know, with most mythology, there is some level of, hey, we tell these scary stories as a warning to not do this thing.
• 34:38
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't go into the dark forest at night because this big scary creature will come get you, right?
• 34:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Or as a way to explain different things, right?
• 34:45
[SPEAKER_01]: Like there's there are creatures that are used as explanations for, you know, still born children, right, or forced lead paralysis, right?
• 34:53
[SPEAKER_01]: These these these things that before we have science, people can't explain, right?
• 34:57
[SPEAKER_01]: So that may be one level of it, but even to this day, like if you pass a
• 35:02
[SPEAKER_01]: If you pass a little mound or, you know, if you have to like, you know, go past the tree, you say Tabitab people, you'll excuse me to the spirit that you think is like living in the tree.
• 35:13
  [SPEAKER_01]: That's even today.
• 35:13
[SPEAKER_01]: So let's do probably the one thing that's like maybe not accurate for this film.
• 35:17
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like people still believe in these creatures and they believe they're here in this world.
• 35:21
[SPEAKER_01]: But for the purposes of this film, they kind of like, you know, sequestered them off onto this film.
• 35:26
[SPEAKER_01]: This is island called Nikali.
• 35:28
[SPEAKER_01]: Nikali is comes from the Filipino word for forget.
• 35:31
  [SPEAKER_01]: Nikali Mutan is forgotten.
• 35:34
  [SPEAKER_01]: Hence forgotten island.
• 35:35
  [SPEAKER_01]: Nikali for short.
• 35:36
[SPEAKER_01]: And then, you know, they say, they say, you know, Mangatau or peep tower is just literally the Filipino word for people or human.
• 35:43
  [SPEAKER_01]: Amazing.
• 35:45
[SPEAKER_00]: I always hear, I'm coming at it from, I know the Greek alphabet.
• 35:48
  [SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, Tau?
• 35:49
  [SPEAKER_00]: I think am I a Tau?
• 35:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, one of the interesting things actually, and this is not going to be great bot podcasting.
• 35:57
[SPEAKER_01]: But if you watch the film, you'll see the script that's like kind of shows up throughout the film, particularly on like this village that they visited like on signs.
• 36:04
[SPEAKER_01]: It's actually, that's actually a script called by buy-in, which is a kind of a traditional indigenous pre, like not using the Roman alphabet language.
• 36:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Those movements actually to like resurrect the by buy-in script.
• 36:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Actually, when the trailer first came out, I took screenshots of the trailer and went to the by buy-inscript subreddit and asked them, hey, can you guys help me translate what is in the screenshots, basically?
• 36:29
[SPEAKER_01]: And this is one easter egg.
• 36:34
  [SPEAKER_01]: of coconuts.
• 36:35
[SPEAKER_01]: And then the by-buy and basically translates to Jan Wells' unbiacable bookah, unbiac means to break.
• 36:43
  [SPEAKER_01]: So unbiacable means unbreakable.
• 36:46
[SPEAKER_01]: And then Jan Wells is the director Hanwell and bookah is co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-
• 37:02
  [SPEAKER_00]: I like that.
• 37:03
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I love when they have fun with their little details like that.
• 37:07
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so we, the people, the humans, are the Tao, Tao, Tao, Tao, we have the Tao, and then I was, I was saying to you before we started recording, there's one Filipino word that I hear over and over whenever the mythology comes up, and it's this word, Aswell.
• 37:23
[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, what are the as well?
• 37:26
[SPEAKER_01]: So as well, this is, it's pretty, it's pretty analogous to the north, north in European and fae, or just kind of like a general term for, for you, usually, safe shifting, but usually, you know, it's generally like the mythological creatures of Filipino mythology, right?
• 37:43
[SPEAKER_01]: a lot of them are dangerous, right?
• 37:45
[SPEAKER_01]: And a lot of them are vampiric for whatever reason, right?
• 37:49
  [SPEAKER_01]: They want your blood.
• 37:51
[SPEAKER_01]: So this is definitely a more, almost kind of a disney-fight version of these creatures that they're not out to get them basically.
• 37:58
[SPEAKER_01]: That we actually, and ask what kind of sort of in-western media usually has a more malevolent or dangerous force, right?
• 38:04
  [SPEAKER_01]: There was a, yeah.
• 38:05
  [SPEAKER_01]: a 1994 movie called Aswang, right?
• 38:09
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a 2009 movie called Surviving Evil, Filipino films obviously use Aswang as creatures a lot, even in the TV so grim.
• 38:18
[SPEAKER_01]: They saw them as a monster over the week there, the 2011 Blade anime, so up.
• 38:24
[SPEAKER_01]: One of the, one of the more in research, I want to hire has a character based on an Asuang or Mananangal specifically, and one of the funniest ones in my research, there is apparently a 2018 erotic novel called Melania, the power of men that portrays Melania as an Asuang who needs to hide her identity after Trump becomes the president.
• 38:46
[SPEAKER_01]: So make of that what you will.
• 38:48
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, you keep saying Monongal and that's for that's yeah, that's the scary creature that we keep referring to.
• 38:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Monongal is yeah, we'll talk about it in a second, but Monongal is a subset of of an Oswarng.
• 39:01
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, you have you know, uh, wear dogs like the wear dog you see in the trailer.
• 39:06
  [SPEAKER_01]: He's an Oswarng, but he's a specific subtype.
• 39:08
  [SPEAKER_01]: The day of Franco.
• 39:09
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oswarng, right?
• 39:10
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 39:11
[SPEAKER_01]: There's like the big baby character with three eyes the channel.
• 39:13
[SPEAKER_01]: That is a subset of an asswang Jokory plays a character called a cup-ray.
• 39:18
  [SPEAKER_01]: That's an asswang.
• 39:19
[SPEAKER_01]: That's a subset of an asswang sold and so forth
• 39:21
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, okay.
• 39:22
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, that was my question is because sometimes like I have the sense from this, especially that they are as you say more like, like creatures, you know, to put it Northwest European terms, but then other times they seem more like demons, but I suppose it's just they are the mythical creatures, we should be respected because they're dangerous.
• 39:40
[SPEAKER_01]: Kind of like if you ever go to like Japanese pathology would be kind of similar where they have like these only right or or the yokai yokai right is the term they use for just general spirits and creatures and so on that hate on many different shapes and some very specific ones um that'll kind of be equivalent of the Japanese yokai um there's a website called um the aswagon project that's kind of like an online research for just kind of like almost like an insectalypedia of the different types of aswagon that have been like recorded in in folklore.
• 40:09
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, it seems like there's so many.
• 40:11
[SPEAKER_00]: There were a lot of people.
• 40:12
[SPEAKER_01]: There were a lot of people.
• 40:12
[SPEAKER_01]: There were a lot of people.
• 40:14
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I've noticed.
• 40:16
  [SPEAKER_00]: All right.
• 40:16
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we, Tau, are going to take a quick commercial break.
• 40:21
[SPEAKER_00]: And when we come back, we'll talk about all of the Aswong of Nakali with full film spoilers.
• 40:27
  [SPEAKER_00]: So you are warm.
• 40:29
  [SPEAKER_00]: Be right back.
• 40:40
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so let's get into the movie itself.
• 40:43
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's start with the star of the theater experience that I had.
• 40:48
[SPEAKER_00]: Josephine, C. Yusin, the Riznona's Joe, and played by her as an adult or as an musical artist, or Kaylee Crawford as a child.
• 41:01
[SPEAKER_00]: And she was, she's the rowdy best friend, the so-called trouble maker comic book artist,
• 41:09
[SPEAKER_00]: constantly in trouble with authority figures.
• 41:12
[SPEAKER_00]: What did you think of Joe as a character?
• 41:14
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, see, it's definitely like two archetypes of Filipino.
• 41:19
[SPEAKER_01]: So I've come across Filipino Americans, I guess, I have to say specifically, you know, myself, I'm probably what's closest to the rice-a-type character, the goody two suits, very academically-minded, and then there's Joe who's like the more creatively-minded, more
• 41:34
[SPEAKER_01]: getting into trouble, but you know, very, very serious sense of self.
• 41:38
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, I think it's, and what are the nice things about this film is that even if they are two very different people, you see how they, it's very clear that they, they understand each other's freak, so to speak, right?
• 41:50
[SPEAKER_01]: They, they, they don't ever question that that they, that there are two pieces in a, in a pot, even they're very different.
• 41:56
  [SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm.
• 41:57
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think one reason where I like this film so much is that the two wolves inside me are Joe and Risa.
• 42:05
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 42:06
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
• 42:06
[SPEAKER_00]: I, yeah, as I said, Joe, the audience that I was with loved her, she was a source of at least half of the laughs.
• 42:12
[SPEAKER_00]: And, and it's because she, like, she just has this punk rockway about her where she's not the butt of the jokes.
• 42:19
[SPEAKER_00]: She's the, it's like all the world's stupid rules are the butt of the jokes.
• 42:26
  [SPEAKER_01]: right.
• 42:27
[SPEAKER_00]: Even if, you know, we feel like we shouldn't be the sad part of her story.
• 42:33
[SPEAKER_00]: There's not it's interesting that as a child, she's like, oh, my father is in the U.S. and he's going to bring Lola and I to the U.S. anytime now.
• 42:42
[SPEAKER_00]: And then when we skip to adulthood, she doesn't even mention him again.
• 42:47
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and there's a scene like later on in the film, white spoilers weren't spoil his own, where it's kind of revealed that he's not gonna be bringing them over, right?
• 42:55
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what kind of causes her to really latch onto the rice as her found family, so to speak, right?
• 43:01
[SPEAKER_01]: And like I mentioned before, right?
• 43:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Like that's just part of the Filipino experience overall.
• 43:06
[SPEAKER_01]: There's so many stories of Filipinos who work overseas, separate from their families, so they can support them.
• 43:11
  [SPEAKER_01]: Right, obviously,
• 43:12
[SPEAKER_01]: you have stories of, you know, here in the states, people like nurses and teachers are being recruited from the Philippines to work in the U.S. because of nursing and teacher sort of is here, so that, and then they end up doing so even if it means they have to be separate from their kids and their family.
• 43:28
  [SPEAKER_01]: for years.
• 43:29
[SPEAKER_01]: And there's even worse situations or other situations like a lot of workers in the Middle East, either as domestic workers or construction workers who are in pretty terrible conditions or they do you know that like 25% of all merchant marines in the world are Filipinos.
• 43:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and so it's just that the Filipinos are have this long history of, you know, in this started back in the 1970s, right, when Marsal Law was in the Philippines and, you know, those economic troubles and they didn't they had trouble, you know, generating enough economy, well, the biggest export of the Filipinos had with its people.
• 44:05
[SPEAKER_01]: And so they started encouraging this overseas, not my grace on, but like working overseas with the intent to come back to the Philippines, but while you overseas sending remittances back to the Philippines.
• 44:15
[SPEAKER_01]: So that's just part of,
• 44:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Filipino culture and life nowadays.
• 44:18
[SPEAKER_01]: So Joe's dad is just one of those and it's unfortunate but there are cases where like you know sometimes the family just gets left behind and they never were able to immigrate over with the with the parent.
• 44:32
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah yeah and you already mentioned that there is this tradition of Filipino comics that Joe is also representing with that side of her.
• 44:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, she's a very good creative artist, right?
• 44:46
[SPEAKER_01]: Even before she goes to the college, she has like this strong visual sense, and, you know, I'll mention, you know, there's one like, you know, there's this one comic, and Filipino comics with it spelled with KOMIC.
• 44:58
[SPEAKER_01]: Comics is a long, there's a long history of that, right?
• 45:02
[SPEAKER_01]: There's, we have our own superheroes, you know, our own characters, but, you know,
• 45:07
[SPEAKER_01]: In the more mainstream right we have, you know, Denise Camp, he's won five Eisner Awards in 2025 for his work on the ultimates and the absolute Martian man hunter, he's Filipino American, Tony Desniga, he co-created Jonah Hex and Black Orchid, William Portatio, worked on Iron Man, uncanny X-Men, Punisher, and then even within Marvel right wave, the character is a Filipino character as well as not to that as well.
• 45:34
[SPEAKER_00]: And then on the other side, we have Reisa Molina, played by Leisa Lisa.
• 45:41
[SPEAKER_01]: Lisa Sobarana, so Lisa Sobarana is a former... She's from the Philippines.
• 45:45
[SPEAKER_01]: She actually was the voice actor.
• 45:46
[SPEAKER_01]: I believe the English voice actress of Tresse, actually.
• 45:50
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, and then Netflix show.
• 45:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I will say the Filipinos thought that her accent was not quite so good There she has a bit more of an Americanized accent compared to this other to the Filipinos But yeah, she's the she's the main actress and I see also I believe have also previously started in the Hollywood film Lisa Frankenstein
• 46:11
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, she was the step sister of, yeah, of the main character.
• 46:16
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
• 46:19
[SPEAKER_00]: And the younger version was played by Kayla Terrell Terrell.
• 46:22
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Terrell.
• 46:23
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
• 46:24
[SPEAKER_00]: But she, she rife presents definitely the the studious side, you know, who
• 46:30
[SPEAKER_00]: She's going to be, as the film opens, we learn, you know, and as they age up, she's going to be going to Caltech in America and she doesn't want to tell Joe that she's the one who wants to go and keeps blaming her parents for sending her there, but she's like torn between this academic series side and also just really loving the side of her that Joe unlocks, you know, the the wilder side, the of her fiercer side.
• 46:56
[SPEAKER_01]: One thing actually that, you know, talking about complex characters is that even though she loves what Joe does, she also is, I can tell that times frustrated with Joe, right?
• 47:05
[SPEAKER_01]: And how Joe just seems to be aimless, you know, has this undirected creative talent, right?
• 47:10
[SPEAKER_01]: That's his very frustrated by, and, you know, at the one point that kind of comes out that see,
• 47:14
[SPEAKER_01]: see, she chooses to not to blame her parents for saying, oh, my parents are making me go to the States to pursue this.
• 47:21
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's actually her choice to do so, would leave rice to leave Joe behind, right?
• 47:25
[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, I think, at the same time, the parents are kind of a little bit more vocal.
• 47:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Joe, like it's like, Waysa, you know, we love Joe, but, you know, see, it's just like a bolder holding you down and you're a rocket, right?
• 47:40
[SPEAKER_00]: And that is, I love to her response to like, how high can a rocket go holding a bolder?
• 47:46
[SPEAKER_00]: She's like, pretty high, actually.
• 47:49
[SPEAKER_01]: It kind of goes with like, you know, I like that the film didn't shy away.
• 47:55
[SPEAKER_01]: It didn't so like that it's universally just great being in the Philippines.
• 47:59
[SPEAKER_01]: Like there is, you know, an unfortunate semi-toxic traits of Filipino culture, like crab mentality of like, hey, or you have to let go of the people who are holding you back type thing, right?
• 48:11
[SPEAKER_01]: And even like, you know, the cast included like an interview with this YouTube channel called One Down that does, you know, Filipino American content and it like there's this, you know, myth in the Philippines.
• 48:21
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, you have to leave the Philippines to become successful, right?
• 48:24
[SPEAKER_01]: That's kind of like what their parents thinks like you're not going to be successful here in the Philippines.
• 48:27
[SPEAKER_01]: You have to go overseas to become successful.
• 48:29
[SPEAKER_01]: That's not necessarily true, but that's just part of the mentality sometimes in the Philippines.
• 48:34
[SPEAKER_00]: And the parents were played by Amy Lynn, Abaraya, and the film's co-director was the dad, Genuel Mercado.
• 48:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the one singing on the wings of love.
• 48:45
[SPEAKER_01]: He definitely gave it his best.
• 48:49
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
• 48:50
[SPEAKER_00]: And then on Joe's side, she, her dad, as we said, is in the U.S., and so it's just basically her and her grandmother, Lola Fatima Yonsun, played by Dali Diliyon, and she is, she's the one who gives them this folklore that they're then seeking this island of Nicolei, that they eventually get to go to, because she did go there in the past.
• 49:14
  [SPEAKER_00]: But also, she's definitely
• 49:18
[SPEAKER_00]: the person that Joe takes after in terms of, yeah, that mischievous side and the creative side.
• 49:25
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and for those of that name, that name is familiar with Dali De Leon.
• 49:28
[SPEAKER_01]: She was, I believe, the Golden Globe nominee for Best Actress Supporting Actress from Ruben Ostlund's Triangle of Satness a couple of years ago.
• 49:37
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, right.
• 49:38
  [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
• 49:38
  [SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm.
• 49:39
  [SPEAKER_00]: Right.
• 49:40
[SPEAKER_00]: Now I'm just seeing her at the end of that movie.
• 49:42
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
• 49:44
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and yeah, we got that opening scene with the decades of friendship montage and that was when, like I said, you know, when she ran across the desk and the first scene it really got me, but also just the, I loved the way the editing was done in this film.
• 49:58
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I loved the way that opening montage was edited about them putting together their charm bracelets, introducing this concept of Joe whenever she's like,
• 50:08
[SPEAKER_00]: Joe's like, ah, let's just like do our own thing.
• 50:11
[SPEAKER_00]: And, uh, and Rice is like, what?
• 50:13
[SPEAKER_00]: But we're the principal's waiting for us.
• 50:15
[SPEAKER_00]: And she just leaves a BRB, wherever it is, recurring theme.
• 50:19
[SPEAKER_01]: There was also like, they said, like, Tyona, right?
• 50:21
  [SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
• 50:22
[SPEAKER_01]: The catchphrase, which actually there was like a little bit of like online controversy, not controversy, but like this, because I'm like, is that like the right term to be using?
• 50:29
[SPEAKER_01]: your translator mind will appreciate this, right?
• 50:32
[SPEAKER_01]: So Tio Na literally translates to Tio is us and then Na is like already.
• 50:38
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's like, it's us already, right?
• 50:40
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so it's kind of like literally translates to it's us, right?
• 50:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Or and you could use it in colloquially like this moment is us.
• 50:47
[SPEAKER_01]: You could, you could use it locally as like, oh, it's our turn, right?
• 50:50
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's, it's, it's, it's our turn to go, right?
• 50:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Some people say like, Tara, Nah, which is more literally like, let's go, would maybe be the more accurate way of doing it.
• 51:01
[SPEAKER_01]: But I think both are, are acceptable, ways.
• 51:02
[SPEAKER_01]: That was just like a funny thing that came up in the, in the online discussion about this film.
• 51:07
[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's good to know because yeah, I'm sure a lot of people, you know, those who do watch are going to walk away saying to their friends, tie a knife.
• 51:14
  [SPEAKER_00]: Let's do something.
• 51:16
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and then yeah, so we go through this opening segment, we go to get to this going away party, where Josh shows up in a chicken costume and she sets like the whole food, the pig, and all the food that was laid out of, uh, for on fire.
• 51:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no, literally every Filipino household in the Philippines has that exact picture of Jesus on the wall like that exact one
• 51:48
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean the audience that I was with started dying when just that whole like the react there's all the human reaction shots and then it zooms in on the photo of Jesus overlooking the scats.
• 51:58
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and then that's when she ever hears the parents and then she you know we have to okay you're going to go to California tomorrow fine, but we have to do one last night together on the beach.
• 52:09
[SPEAKER_00]: BRB note and that's where it happens.
• 52:13
[SPEAKER_00]: They get the sand dollar, portal key opens the portal to the opportunity that they've always dreamed of.
• 52:21
[SPEAKER_01]: And then they forget what happens for 12 hours.
• 52:23
[SPEAKER_00]: And then suddenly the wake up, and there's day Franco raw.
• 52:28
[SPEAKER_00]: It was a wear aspect.
• 52:31
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's just like wear dogs, is that just a jamming thing?
• 52:35
[SPEAKER_01]: Aspen is actually, it's a native dog to the Philippines.
• 52:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Aspen is just, it's a mixed breed, like, kind of like a mud, but it's specific to the Philippines.
• 52:43
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's like wear a dog, but specifically, like it'd be calling it like a wear pecanese, basically, or a wear husky.
• 52:51
  [SPEAKER_00]: Right.
• 52:51
  [SPEAKER_00]: Gotcha.
• 52:52
  [SPEAKER_00]: Gotcha.
• 52:52
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and he can't control his transformations, but he swears.
• 52:57
[SPEAKER_00]: They were all hanging out all night, and they have the tattoos to show for it.
• 53:02
[SPEAKER_00]: But of course, it's looking a little sus, but then he takes them to the market to hang out.
• 53:07
[SPEAKER_00]: The market sequence was so cool first of all, just the way they introduce it, and they show the camera zooming through this like 3D market layout, and you just see the characters jumping to these different points.
• 53:21
[SPEAKER_00]: following them in real time, but we're seeing them touch in on all these points in just one camera zoom, just really creative visual communication in this film.
• 53:30
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, that was definitely one of the highlights of the film for me.
• 53:35
[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, my Spidey sense is we're definitely going off when he took them to Batty Bat, play by Jenny Slate, who is a very distinct voice who is a dangerous tree, dwelling Batty Bat, so yes, they really stretched for the name there that specializes in memories.
• 53:51
  [SPEAKER_00]: So what's a Batty Bat?
• 53:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but even it's kind of like a nymph, right?
• 53:55
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, usually, I was, when the trailer came on like, what is this cat feeds go?
• 53:59
[SPEAKER_01]: I've never, I've never heard of like a cat creature in Filipino mythology.
• 54:02
[SPEAKER_01]: They just took the design of a cat, but it's, it's actually more international mythology closer to, um, like a nymph or dwarf, but more or less, uh, more of a very, a very fat nymph, basically.
• 54:14
[SPEAKER_01]: And they basically, they're, they're big thing is they don't like people sleeping near their tree, which is why it gets control over vines.
• 54:22
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's basically, it's basically an explanation for sleep paralysis.
• 54:27
[SPEAKER_01]: Basically, why are you, why do you have sleep paralysis when you sleep next to the tree?
• 54:31
[SPEAKER_01]: It might be because you have sleep apnea, which a lot of Filipinos myself have.
• 54:35
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's really, but they say, oh no, it's because the batiba didn't like you sleeping next to the tree.
• 54:40
  [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
• 54:41
  [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
• 54:42
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I got, I did like the cat design just, you know, she, this is another big laugh when she just like putting her face in their faces and purring and like that suspicious.
• 54:52
[SPEAKER_00]: That's the behavior of a cat that wants something.
• 54:55
[SPEAKER_01]: And the cat of the dog working together really.
• 54:59
[SPEAKER_00]: But so we find out she collects memories and stolen memories like the memory of the girls night before we ultimately find out they hand over an object in that case they handed over the camera and the memories were gone and now she wants their entire freaking charm bracelets which is like the memory of their entire friendship and yeah we find out
• 55:19
[SPEAKER_00]: she's she's playing a game because she already she knows they don't remember already giving her the first set of memories But they did lose the sand dollar portal came from her and they lost it and she's a gorephobic So she can't go is the agorephobic thing part of the what does it bout to go not necessarily I don't think that's like a specific I think that's just a specific character is a son
• 55:39
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, but he explains why she won't follow them out of her layer.
• 55:45
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
• 55:45
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 55:46
[SPEAKER_01]: Going back to La, actually, and him, you know, one of his things is that he marks the island all over as a dog with, you know, being on it.
• 55:55
[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know, there's something, there's some, some metal level here because like in the Philippines it's very crowded, right?
• 56:01
[SPEAKER_01]: And there's just like, unfortunately, like you see this cases of, you know,
• 56:04
[SPEAKER_01]: You people kind of like doing their business on a wall or something when they need to right and when they need to and so it's just like, wait, that that's the seems very vanilla is to me.
• 56:14
  [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
• 56:15
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, I love just the commentary there at the end, you know, he's he comes out about it.
• 56:20
[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, I just want to be seen.
• 56:23
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just ignored by him.
• 56:24
[SPEAKER_00]: They only one of my kind and everyone finds me annoying and everyone wants to pretend I don't even exist.
• 56:30
[SPEAKER_01]: And I want to be remembered, right?
• 56:31
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
• 56:31
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
• 56:32
[SPEAKER_01]: It was just like a big theme here, right?
• 56:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Like memory and being recognized.
• 56:37
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and then I love like I do love a getting the gang together story and so we do have that going on here.
• 56:44
[SPEAKER_00]: We get ultimately two more members of their gang.
• 56:47
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, not even including actually you put the bird.
• 56:50
  [SPEAKER_00]: The, uh, sorry monoc.
• 56:52
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a, sorry monoc is basically like a Thunderbird right from the Indigenous Native American culture.
• 56:57
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like the Filipino equivalent of a Thunderbird.
• 56:59
[SPEAKER_01]: Doesn't really talk here, but it's just, uh, uh, you know, moves very, very fast.
• 57:05
[SPEAKER_00]: very handy only let's Joe drive part of the pack they uh and i know what it would recall them the uh swung vingers and i don't know um and but they meet they they gather up two more bungy
• 57:19
[SPEAKER_00]: play by many Jacinto, who is a large Tiennak?
• 57:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Tiennak, so a knock is like the word for child, right?
• 57:30
[SPEAKER_01]: And then so Tiennak is to this newly a vampire, again, most asked one or some former vampire that want to suck your blood.
• 57:36
[SPEAKER_01]: But they were vampires who take the form of a crying child in the woods.
• 57:40
[SPEAKER_01]: And so if you go into the woods after the crying child, the chinak is going to change form and then eat you.
• 57:46
  [SPEAKER_01]: So that's what a traditionally a chinak is.
• 57:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I never heard of one with three eyes, but again, to hear character design, many Jacinto, my listeners may know him from the acolyte.
• 57:57
[SPEAKER_01]: He plays the character there.
• 57:59
[SPEAKER_01]: Other listeners may know him from the good place.
• 58:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Where he plays the verse.
• 58:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Jason Mendoza, Salad Jackson of Florida, Bordle's Jacksonville Jaguars are having a good season this year.
• 58:08
  [SPEAKER_01]: Again, I'm from Jacksonville.
• 58:10
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, no, Danny Jacinto does a really good, he is really good.
• 58:15
[SPEAKER_01]: I guess they come Bungi.
• 58:18
[SPEAKER_01]: He's actually, I guess the Tagalog word of say would be Bungi, right now he's the way I say it.
• 58:24
[SPEAKER_01]: Bungi means like, I'm Bungi, I'm missing teeth.
• 58:28
[SPEAKER_00]: oh okay um it's who are they're not normally the chanak are not normally uh giant sites no they're just they're just like applying like the the sound of the crying baby in the forest you go in it's actually a chanak going to get you okay okay and then yeah he has his mom there he's obsessed with his mom throughout because he's only a hundred years old so it's fine time to finally literally cut the umbilical cord
• 58:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, it definitely feels like that's a characterization of the type of, you know, Filipino or a character who like doesn't want to leave home, right, who wants the state title mom.
• 59:03
  [SPEAKER_01]: So this big.
• 59:04
  [SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm.
• 59:06
[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, the one of the funny of things is this tattoo that Raul has maybe infected and he rubs it in Bungi's eyes.
• 59:16
[SPEAKER_00]: And he's like, I'm gonna get pink eye and everyone's like, oh, stop, you're not gonna get pink eye.
• 59:21
[SPEAKER_01]: And then he does, and then he does a will Smith get my mom's name out of your mouth.
• 59:25
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he does.
• 59:27
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think that was a literal reference?
• 59:29
  [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
• 59:30
  [SPEAKER_01]: I wouldn't be surprised.
• 59:32
  [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
• 59:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, one of the things that he does is they, I don't, again, I don't think that's specific to Chenak, but you know, another cool thing is they use the weaving as another alternate form of animation to kind of like sell, do do like the, the flashback sequences.
• 59:50
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, so many cool different styles of animation later on top of each other.
• 59:55
[SPEAKER_00]: And then we got Kevin McKen as Merman, so he's not a Merman, he's Merman, Prince of the Catau in dual of the sea.
• 1:00:04
  [SPEAKER_00]: The Catau are
• 1:00:06
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so in the Philippines, Mervouk would be Serena or Serendol, I guess, right?
• 1:00:13
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's becoming from Sivan, like the lone word from Spanish, and then Catau would be kind of like the higher level of Mervouk, right?
• 1:00:22
[SPEAKER_01]: So kind of like the Lord of Mervouk specifically.
• 1:00:26
[SPEAKER_00]: And is this a movie thing where he gets dried out and turns into this shrivel little reminded me of like creatures Ursula collected in a little moment.
• 1:00:35
[SPEAKER_01]: That's got to eat that his, his drive up form reminds me of something I can't place it exactly.
• 1:00:41
[SPEAKER_01]: It's some sort of like creepy pasta type creature.
• 1:00:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, um, but yeah, no, that's uh, there's a lot of male nipples in this film.
• 1:00:50
  [SPEAKER_00]: Well, nobody here.
• 1:00:51
[SPEAKER_00]: We have many in Jane Molina as Nico Santos.
• 1:00:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, sorry, many in Jane Molina and so many to Sto, the Amalina, Amalina Aballa, who plays the mom and then also another third Filipino actor who doesn't so anywhere else.
• 1:01:07
[SPEAKER_01]: Nico Santos, you've watched, he shows up in crazy with Asians.
• 1:01:11
[SPEAKER_01]: He's also, if you ever watch the so superstar on TV plays the character there as well.
• 1:01:18
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and so they blended their three voices together to do the starfish pasties?
• 1:01:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, Ariel could never.
• 1:01:24
  [SPEAKER_00]: It was really funny.
• 1:01:28
[SPEAKER_00]: They're like his hype starfish pasties.
• 1:01:31
  [SPEAKER_00]: I know.
• 1:01:33
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and yeah, this is just like it's his minor character who probably, you know, haven't tallyed up the screen time.
• 1:01:40
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't imagine it's much, but he still gets this whole arc of like lying about knowing where the portal is to seem important.
• 1:01:47
[SPEAKER_00]: And again, it's like I just want to be seen like it's the same with Merman, with Braw, with Joe.
• 1:01:54
  [SPEAKER_00]: It's like I just...
• 1:01:55
[SPEAKER_01]: want to be seen and remember it is you point yeah there's also like there's also a level of you know there's a Filipino term called hea which is literally translates to same words like you know I'm you know if it's like if you don't you know go and uh um
• 1:02:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Like if if someone does you a favor and then you don't like do a favor back from them is he yeah, right?
• 1:02:16
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's a whole same fall.
• 1:02:17
[SPEAKER_01]: So him saying saying that oh, I totally can be able to do this And then but lying about it because it would be same for him to to look like he doesn't know what he's doing That's he yeah, and they never call it out by name, but I definitely felt very Filipino to me Yeah, yeah
• 1:02:34
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and so that's there, like, because this is the thing is we finally got the gang together and then, you know, it's they reach the climax of the movie and it has to end obviously it was almost two hours, but this is why we need more so that we can have them going back and hanging out with these with this group, I want more of this group of characters.
• 1:02:57
[SPEAKER_00]: But we also, like, and we had the other groups beside that, like, on the ally side, we had DOT to play by Joe Koy was the chief of the, and you mentioned the Cappera?
• 1:03:08
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so Cappera, like Filipino ends?
• 1:03:10
[SPEAKER_01]: No, so Cappera, more, they're basically like these giant men who like to sit in trees and smoke a lot.
• 1:03:18
  [SPEAKER_01]: OK.
• 1:03:20
[SPEAKER_01]: So, and so Joe Koy might obviously they're Filipino American comedian, right?
• 1:03:27
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, yeah, I mean, the cover is is not quite they live in trees.
• 1:03:31
[SPEAKER_01]: They're like, again, a lot of trees in the Philippines, like Batiba, right, or associated with trees cover, also associated with trees.
• 1:03:37
[SPEAKER_01]: That's why like whenever you go around the Philippines, like a forest, you always like very cheerful around the trees.
• 1:03:41
[SPEAKER_01]: You say Tabi Tabi for excuse me, so you don't annoy them too much, basically.
• 1:03:46
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, but then they had they hosted like the karaoke party that brought almost the entire island together.
• 1:03:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't know what the they they were these fairies also I don't actually know what those fairies are specifically in Filipinoology.
• 1:04:00
[SPEAKER_01]: I found it very funny.
• 1:04:01
[SPEAKER_01]: They it's not Red Bull.
• 1:04:03
  [SPEAKER_01]: What was it?
• 1:04:03
[SPEAKER_01]: It's Scarlet cow or something crimson cow energy drinks, I think.
• 1:04:08
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, now there is so much going on in the background that I, yeah, I was thinking a lot of the time as I was watching it like I can't wait to like and watch us at home, so I can pause and take in some of like that that party scenes and the woods.
• 1:04:21
[SPEAKER_00]: Just to look at all the details and all the characters that are in there.
• 1:04:25
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 1:04:27
[SPEAKER_00]: We also have on the less allied side, we have Truffle Waffle play by Ronnie Chang, whom people might know from the Daily Show and and Crazy Rich Asians, as you brought up earlier, and other things.
• 1:04:40
[SPEAKER_00]: But he is the king of the Duende people.
• 1:04:43
[SPEAKER_00]: They totally not cute warriors who should not be just respected or vomited upon with fire.
• 1:04:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Dwarf is basically a dwarf basically right if you watch Tresse right you know they're carrying like lives under the the the manhole covers in the city that's that's the Dwende there Okay, they're just like another interpret hazelnut that I mean they chose to make them super cute and fluffy and Marsh Malawi which is you know again just another interpret
• 1:05:10
  [SPEAKER_01]: presentation of it.
• 1:05:12
[SPEAKER_01]: I find it funny that beyond the Nathan Mayth Matthew David, Slastled Regore and some connection between this and the Odyssey, there's also another Odyssey connection with the Trojan chicken at the end.
• 1:05:24
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, great.
• 1:05:25
  [SPEAKER_00]: Hey, that's right.
• 1:05:26
[SPEAKER_00]: I forgot about the Trojan chicken.
• 1:05:27
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
• 1:05:29
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because there's a lot going on here because they're not even the main antagonist, but they're just another antagonist that leads to that they can actually use at the end.
• 1:05:41
[SPEAKER_00]: Our Asfong vendors can use to pit against the last character.
• 1:05:46
[SPEAKER_00]: We'll talk about Manong to reach his bottle climax.
• 1:05:56
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I mean, Leia's the longest.
• 1:05:58
[SPEAKER_01]: He's the voice of Jasmine singing voice.
• 1:06:01
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, um, okay, originated.
• 1:06:03
  [SPEAKER_01]: She's a legend.
• 1:06:03
  [SPEAKER_01]: She has her own.
• 1:06:04
[SPEAKER_01]: She just got her own Hollywood star.
• 1:06:06
[SPEAKER_01]: See, was I believe she's played multiple roles in I built in Miss Saigon and in Lemuse Robless on West End and Broadway.
• 1:06:16
  [SPEAKER_01]: So I mean, she's, she's a legend.
• 1:06:18
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and so she is the Manangal, am I saying enough?
• 1:06:24
[SPEAKER_01]: So, it's kind of a little bit of a pun here.
• 1:06:27
[SPEAKER_01]: So the creature's name is Manangal, Manangal, so Manangal comes from, I guess the root word would be Tangal, which would be the separate, right?
• 1:06:40
[SPEAKER_01]: So Manangal is to separate.
• 1:06:42
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's a creature, it's an asswang that can basically separate the upper torso from the lower torso around.
• 1:06:50
[SPEAKER_01]: Traditionally, it's essentially like the idea would be like they look like normal people, and most mythology, they look like normal people in the everyday like a vampire would be.
• 1:06:59
[SPEAKER_01]: And then at night the upper body would separate and then fly around the village and then live in the and then go into like the roof raptors and then uh and then not sewn here but they have like a long proposes like tongue and for this homothology and then it goes into the uterus of the pregnant woman and then eats the unborn child.
• 1:07:21
[SPEAKER_01]: So it was meant as a way to explain a still birth and miscarriages, basically.
• 1:07:28
[SPEAKER_01]: So the part here though is so Mananangal, right, is the name of the creature Manang, which is what they refer to, like Manang, Manangal, Manang is actually almost like a term for like Mrs. basically.
• 1:07:39
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's like Mrs. Manangal.
• 1:07:44
[SPEAKER_00]: And so she can do that separation thing.
• 1:07:47
[SPEAKER_00]: She has two sets of wings.
• 1:07:49
[SPEAKER_00]: Now one of them at least is holding on with a set of claws.
• 1:07:53
[SPEAKER_00]: Is that a movie invention?
• 1:07:55
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, probably a movie thing.
• 1:07:56
[SPEAKER_01]: But I think it just kind of broadly is like the whole separation thing.
• 1:07:59
  [SPEAKER_01]: Right?
• 1:08:00
[SPEAKER_01]: Just kind of took that and took some creative liberties there.
• 1:08:03
[SPEAKER_00]: No, yeah, the character design is so cool.
• 1:08:05
[SPEAKER_00]: And also just like this is the way she moved at one point.
• 1:08:08
[SPEAKER_00]: They actually accidentally put invisible stuff like potion on her and just like she's she's like the Predator.
• 1:08:16
  [SPEAKER_00]: She's like the Predator.
• 1:08:17
  [SPEAKER_01]: What's the funny.
• 1:08:18
[SPEAKER_01]: There's like another Predator reference earlier in the film.
• 1:08:21
[SPEAKER_01]: We're like the classic handshake.
• 1:08:24
  [SPEAKER_01]: Seeing from the movie.
• 1:08:25
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, right.
• 1:08:25
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, the girls.
• 1:08:28
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's almost like an exorcist type thing where like twists her head like 360 degrees.
• 1:08:34
[SPEAKER_01]: What's I mean, if you can separate your body, I guess you could do that.
• 1:08:36
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
• 1:08:37
[SPEAKER_00]: And she just has this like overall.
• 1:08:38
[SPEAKER_00]: This is like twitchy way of moving.
• 1:08:40
[SPEAKER_00]: That's kind of like like the way what's what's her face from the ring moves.
• 1:08:47
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 1:08:50
[SPEAKER_00]: And then also this other cool thing that they do is they have this like spiky animation with her where she's just like randomly just spikes will I think it's like more upset like kind of like emotionally it's like emotionally soaring like her up to how how angry she is basically
• 1:09:07
  [SPEAKER_00]: So cool in aura.
• 1:09:08
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like I want to I want to I love at the end of my mom's like I always thought she was hot.
• 1:09:13
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like she is that But yeah, rice is stole her wings and because her wings also wanted to be stolen.
• 1:09:22
[SPEAKER_00]: I love that twist and yeah, just the the way that played off like where
• 1:09:28
[SPEAKER_00]: because we find out that Batiba had stolen part of Menong's memories.
• 1:09:34
[SPEAKER_00]: We don't find out what memory it is.
• 1:09:36
[SPEAKER_00]: We honestly don't really need to know what it is.
• 1:09:38
[SPEAKER_00]: I suppose maybe a sequel could touch on that if it wanted to.
• 1:09:42
  [SPEAKER_00]: But it made her...
• 1:09:44
[SPEAKER_00]: have a vacancy that turned her into this villain, because she wasn't completely herself, and then that also caused her to push away another part of her, this set of wings that ends up going to Risa because she's just nicer to them.
• 1:09:57
[SPEAKER_00]: But then at the same time, it's an opportunity to show, because we find it get the reveal that Risa is the one who's like, I'm going to steal those wings.
• 1:10:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and she was leaving Joe for it, and no, it was you, Risa.
• 1:10:09
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, going back like the fact that her losing memory is with causes her to like deteriorate and become like this Vensville creature right as they could lost her way almost right again kind of so sad a larger theme Or if you lose your memories you lose your sense of self it really has a negative impact on you as individual
• 1:10:26
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, I really like one of the things one of my early speculations from the trailers actually was that That Joe would be part man and I know that like dolly that would be a man and I know because you know She comes from I thought that maybe she comes from the colleague island, but I think it's still interesting motif
• 1:10:44
[SPEAKER_01]: I guess to use for the larger theme where, you know, the Mananangal, and it's so an multiple times throughout the film.
• 1:10:50
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, one, like, it's the creature that Joe talks about in her presentation with the slide projector, when they do a talent show, they basically take two parts of the Mananangal.
• 1:11:01
[SPEAKER_01]: They have like these little crochet Mananangal that's part of the charms, and they have like, you know, one has the head, one has the torso, right?
• 1:11:08
[SPEAKER_01]: It's part of this larger, again, going back to the OFW overseas Filipino worker thing, where,
• 1:11:13
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, even though we are separate, right, even though me and my family might be separate across oceans, so it's other, you know, we are still, we still have this shared memory together and that memory defines who we are.
• 1:11:25
[SPEAKER_01]: And so even though we're separate, we're still connected in part of one larger whole together, right?
• 1:11:30
[SPEAKER_01]: There's like a word that is not really mentioned, but it's so up in the mural with the copper, where it's like the mural of like what happened at night.
• 1:11:37
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a word across the top that I don't think was really called out, but it's the word
• 1:11:43
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's, it's a filthy reward, it doesn't really have a straight English translation, but it almost means like,
• 1:11:49
[SPEAKER_01]: like common man who, common humanity, right?
• 1:11:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Copa, it's like, well, all together, we're all one basically, or we're all together, right?
• 1:11:59
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a part of Filipino psychology of integrating the other with yourself, I think.
• 1:12:04
[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think that's one of the larger themes that I think the Mananangato, as a symbol of that, is a pretty good allegory for that, with the two parts, but still a part of one whole.
• 1:12:14
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and that's true, that that's kind of her story in the way she's kind of one of the most relatable characters because I think a lot of people especially in the current day and age understand being angry at the world and
• 1:12:33
  [SPEAKER_00]: at the end.
• 1:12:33
  [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
• 1:12:34
  [SPEAKER_00]: I do.
• 1:12:34
[SPEAKER_00]: I was thinking about it afterward.
• 1:12:36
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, what is the island like now that they don't have this threat?
• 1:12:42
  [SPEAKER_00]: Who is the other?
• 1:12:43
[SPEAKER_00]: Will they choose another threat to be the other?
• 1:12:45
[SPEAKER_00]: I guess the sequel will tell us.
• 1:12:47
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we'll see.
• 1:12:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, maybe he goes back in time.
• 1:12:49
  [SPEAKER_01]: Who knows?
• 1:12:50
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's also thinking as far as if Joe is from Nikolei.
• 1:12:54
[SPEAKER_00]: We don't know who her grandfather was and we know that low love is there.
• 1:12:58
[SPEAKER_01]: He has a tattoo of
• 1:13:03
[SPEAKER_01]: I was making you want to what what memory do you think that her mother her grandmother gave up to we will to come back because that's like the first day Maybe she doesn't remember how she got pregnant.
• 1:13:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, okay But yeah, sorry, that's a larger theme there.
• 1:13:18
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's
• 1:13:21
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, those are all the named characters.
• 1:13:22
[SPEAKER_01]: There are a couple of other ones kind of like shown in the background The crown that that Joe has is from a Nippoing from a te clabang or te gbalang.
• 1:13:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Te gbalang or like essentially like a minitar, but instead of instead of a Bull, it's a horse, right, so that's another classic Filipino
• 1:13:40
  [SPEAKER_00]: Is that like intressy?
• 1:13:42
[SPEAKER_00]: There was the horse in the racer.
• 1:13:45
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly.
• 1:13:46
  [SPEAKER_00]: That was one episode.
• 1:13:47
[SPEAKER_00]: The episode two was especially about that.
• 1:13:49
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so that's a thick ballang.
• 1:13:51
[SPEAKER_01]: It's never really sewn up clothes, but in like the white sorts of Nikali Island, you see this dragon flying around in the sky.
• 1:13:59
[SPEAKER_01]: That's probably a reference to Bakunawa, who is like a famous, like a named Filipino dragon from the southern part of the Philippines.
• 1:14:07
[SPEAKER_01]: Actually, there's an upcoming video game, a virtual fighter that's kind of set in the fictionalized version of the Philippines, and one of the antagonists is revealed to be known as the Bakunawa killer, basically.
• 1:14:21
[SPEAKER_01]: So that's like another part of the full-pernum mythology.
• 1:14:23
[SPEAKER_00]: Is it more similar to a European dragon or a Chinese dragon or something else?
• 1:14:28
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if this is, it's probably close to a serpent then it is like the, the, the, the, the, the, the, it's obviously the jack, the Chinese influence in the Philippine region as well.
• 1:14:37
[SPEAKER_01]: And then like other stuff like, you know, just not necessarily named, but other Philippine though, like, creates like a needle, like little spirits in Kanto, or like entent, ententances.
• 1:14:46
[SPEAKER_01]: The water doesn't really show it, but that's like the work for like full, there's like a whole pantheon of Filipino gods and goddesses that like not even touched on in this film, um, like the god of thunder is known as Batala, right?
• 1:14:58
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, there's a whole world of Filipino thoughts that they could choose to go to if they wanted to.
• 1:15:03
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, a lot more to mine.
• 1:15:06
[SPEAKER_00]: So everyone go see it in the theater, tell your friends.
• 1:15:09
[SPEAKER_00]: And so it gets lots of money and gets more.
• 1:15:12
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so then this brings us to the end of the part of the movie where we find out that Joe had hidden the sand dollar because she didn't want to go back to the real world.
• 1:15:22
[SPEAKER_00]: And so she's going to give up her memories as a way home to so that Risa has can go home and be safe and she'll stay behind them for get about Risa and this is where.
• 1:15:32
[SPEAKER_00]: Rice, uh, we have this eternal sunshine of the spotless mine sequence, but what really happens is like, there was this charm she didn't want to put on.
• 1:15:42
  [SPEAKER_00]: It was a firecracker.
• 1:15:44
[SPEAKER_00]: She's like, a camp that on my bracelet.
• 1:15:46
  [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going on a plane.
• 1:15:49
[SPEAKER_00]: But then she just puts it on because she's like, oh, I've lost my friend and the magic of these memories pulls them that back together.
• 1:15:55
[SPEAKER_00]: And I would say that's the most hand-wavey of the magic, Rose, like, you know what, fine, I'll go away.
• 1:15:59
[SPEAKER_01]: Only one, that's, that's one where I wish maybe they should have used the Mananangal creatures as like another, again, like the two parts of one hole, the connection, it's other.
• 1:16:08
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's true, too.
• 1:16:10
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely.
• 1:16:12
[SPEAKER_00]: But then yeah, that we get that eternal sunshine and spotless mind sequence.
• 1:16:16
[SPEAKER_00]: And, uh, Bati Baud, do we think that she really repented at the end?
• 1:16:20
  [SPEAKER_01]: I think so.
• 1:16:20
[SPEAKER_01]: So they gave her the Jo gave her her Norkies, which are, again, another very Filipino thing, knock off Nike's.
• 1:16:28
[SPEAKER_01]: You see a lot of those in the Philippines as well.
• 1:16:31
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, they gave her her Norkies like, you know, help her make her own memories, right?
• 1:16:35
[SPEAKER_01]: And have and live her own experience of her own, you know, just like relying on second hand stories basically, right?
• 1:16:44
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, so she, I mean, because she, Bati Bati Bati says she realizes that memory shape who we are.
• 1:16:49
[SPEAKER_00]: So she hasn't even formed herself, because she's only living through other people.
• 1:16:53
[SPEAKER_00]: And then, yeah, Menong and Raul both seem to be in happier places and the island seems happier overall.
• 1:17:00
[SPEAKER_00]: And then Jo has turned their experiences into best-selling romantasy.
• 1:17:05
[SPEAKER_00]: That was a great sequence.
• 1:17:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Is it law or or Bermana, who will vice a pick?
• 1:17:13
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was like it was back to the um, twilight days.
• 1:17:17
[SPEAKER_01]: I am very curious what that conversation with Rice's parents were like though, the next days and see Mr.
• 1:17:23
  [SPEAKER_01]: Flight.
• 1:17:24
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, I was wondering that too.
• 1:17:27
[SPEAKER_01]: Also, the funny thing is, like, oh, I have to cast my flight at seven in the Philippines.
• 1:17:30
[SPEAKER_01]: That means you have to be at the airport by like, who in the afternoon?
• 1:17:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Because of how bad the airport is right there or so.
• 1:17:36
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, man.
• 1:17:36
[SPEAKER_01]: They did not have it once time as they thought.
• 1:17:40
[SPEAKER_00]: She has been traveled enough, I guess.
• 1:17:42
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, I did wonder about that.
• 1:17:44
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, how do you explain?
• 1:17:45
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, no, it was, I went around all for Joe, but this time it was really series.
• 1:17:50
  [SPEAKER_01]: I promise.
• 1:17:52
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 1:17:53
[SPEAKER_00]: But the good news is that their charm bracelets, their shared memories open a portal that the women can hop into when they're together forever after it seems so they can go back and hang out whenever they want.
• 1:18:05
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yep, yep.
• 1:18:07
  [SPEAKER_01]: Happy ending all around.
• 1:18:08
[SPEAKER_00]: happy ending all around with their other standouts like Filipino cultural moments or other things that you wanted to make.
• 1:18:15
[SPEAKER_01]: So a couple of things that obviously that will pop up.
• 1:18:18
[SPEAKER_01]: I mentioned Capua, so it's not like the word Capua, so it's not on the mural with the Capre, as like a Filipino word that, you know, it's not really translated, but if you know, you know,
• 1:18:28
[SPEAKER_01]: When she like freaks out about the blended, how cute they are, they're like the little animated work, probably a gigile is like kind of a word translating to like a cute aggression, when there's something so cute you want to squeeze it, that's a gigile.
• 1:18:42
[SPEAKER_01]: When they're like, oh, we have to go back to the village and get these gifts to let people know that Nikali is real.
• 1:18:48
[SPEAKER_01]: That is they have like passive loobong, which is basically like when you go on a trip and you bring back like a souvenir for whoever that's basically passive loobong is.
• 1:18:57
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I already talked about the bi-bi-inscript kind of like being being throughout, um, uh, uh, the butterfly knife that shows up and actually the butterfly knife was actually invented in the Philippines.
• 1:19:07
[SPEAKER_00]: That's like another, not to that, um, we did she leave that with Raul, because he kept stealing it from her.
• 1:19:13
[SPEAKER_01]: I think I think she might have.
• 1:19:14
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, see, I'm supposed to get another one, and then, um, uh, one of the things at the party, and it's also shows up later, um, in Batiba's cave, but when they point with their ellipse, and you see like, like, see, see, see, that's mono, which is like, blast blasts with like the hand in the forehead, to the, to the, to the, to the rice's lola, it's like, hey, lola, have you seen Joe, or have you seen rice, uh, he doesn't say anything just points it really, but you see like a dotted line that
• 1:19:44
[SPEAKER_01]: That is a very Filipino thing to do to just point with your lips.
• 1:19:48
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, when they find the tattoos, which are actually just like carved into their skin, that is, they use, and it's not exactly like Vix's Vaporub, basically.
• 1:19:59
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's like the, a petroleum jelly.
• 1:20:01
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just like an all a cure all for Filipino people.
• 1:20:05
[SPEAKER_00]: Why is it my household growing up too, I have to say.
• 1:20:07
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's a very Filipino thing to do.
• 1:20:10
[SPEAKER_00]: And I loved, by the way, that Risa, like, they didn't think she had a tattoo because she's the responsible one, but then it turns out she had a glowing and dark one on her shape.
• 1:20:19
[SPEAKER_01]: But how do you do that?
• 1:20:21
[SPEAKER_01]: I guess that is that, I don't know if mechanical engineering translates to glow in the dark path too.
• 1:20:25
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, you can.
• 1:20:26
  [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
• 1:20:27
  [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what they used.
• 1:20:29
[SPEAKER_00]: Like I know that there is I consider to actually at one point getting a black lady tattoo to cover up a jellyfish thing.
• 1:20:36
[SPEAKER_00]: I thought it was going to be meta about it.
• 1:20:40
[SPEAKER_00]: And it is possible to do it, but I don't think it lasts long.
• 1:20:44
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 1:20:44
[SPEAKER_01]: And then, um, you know, obviously like Joe works at not Zollibi, right?
• 1:20:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Like the fight chicken place, which, again, sponsored the film or I sponsored advertising at the film.
• 1:20:54
[SPEAKER_01]: I actually would say that like there's actually probably, uh, I got this is getting really into the weeds.
• 1:20:59
[SPEAKER_01]: It's probably a mix between Zollibi, which is fight chicken.
• 1:21:02
[SPEAKER_01]: And then if you look at the background and in that particular scene, there's like a grill with chicken.
• 1:21:06
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's probably a combination of uh, Zollibi and Mung in a saddle, which is like a grilled chicken
• 1:21:13
[SPEAKER_01]: in the Philippines as well.
• 1:21:14
[SPEAKER_00]: Was it called Not Jelly Bee in the film?
• 1:21:17
[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's not called Not Jelly Bee.
• 1:21:18
  [SPEAKER_01]: I'm calling it.
• 1:21:19
[SPEAKER_01]: It's called Not Jelly Bee.
• 1:21:20
  [SPEAKER_01]: Not Jelly Bee.
• 1:21:22
[SPEAKER_01]: The giant spoon that they use is like, it's a kind of a joke that like in Filipino houses, like you'll see a picture of the last supper, and you'll see like a giant spoon on someone's on their walls, spoon and fork, and it's like, oh, I got to get this on my wall somewhere.
• 1:21:40
[SPEAKER_01]: Also, I feel like there was like a barrelman scene, which is kind of like a dirty gift almost.
• 1:21:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Basically, the barrelman is basically like it's a little toy with just a barrel on it and then you open it up and then the little thing pops up basically because it was held down by the barrel.
• 1:22:02
[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like I saw a barrelman in the middle in the film somewhere.
• 1:22:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, it didn't sew it
• 1:22:08
[SPEAKER_01]: But it was, oh, you put that in the film.
• 1:22:10
  [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
• 1:22:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but yeah, I think I would say probably the biggest thing though.
• 1:22:16
[SPEAKER_01]: And again, I think I mentioned this at the start of the episode, but it's been almost an hour and a half.
• 1:22:19
[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll read it and read it here, right?
• 1:22:22
  [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I see Lola's story.
• 1:22:25
[SPEAKER_01]: So she talks about, I, in my childhood, I went to the college.
• 1:22:29
[SPEAKER_01]: I had this wonderful time.
• 1:22:31
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm passing this on to you, right?
• 1:22:33
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's almost like a allegory for how Filipino Americans,
• 1:22:39
  [SPEAKER_01]: Think about the Philippines.
• 1:22:40
[SPEAKER_01]: There was a lot of discussion online, especially in the Filipino side of the Internet of like is this just a Filipino Americans take on the Philippines right like Filipino Americans don't really know what it's like in the Philippines right they've never lived here their parents were here so many years ago that they don't really have a sense of what it's like nowadays.
• 1:22:58
[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, that's true, right?
• 1:23:00
[SPEAKER_01]: My wife is, you know, she's been here for eight years already in the States, but she's from the Philippines directly.
• 1:23:06
[SPEAKER_01]: She was born and raised there and lived there for most of her life.
• 1:23:09
[SPEAKER_01]: And so, and I go back every of the year or so, so, like, I kind of have a sense that, like, yeah, it's not just, you know, all hunky-dory, like, what your parents remember and telling you, right?
• 1:23:17
  [SPEAKER_00]: Mm-hmm.
• 1:23:18
[SPEAKER_01]: But at the same time, when I,
• 1:23:22
[SPEAKER_01]: When I heard my, when I was going up, and obviously I lived some using the Philippines, I was very young and don't remember that much.
• 1:23:28
[SPEAKER_01]: I had a relatively salted life in the Philippines, but like going up, I hear these stories of my parents' life in the Philippines.
• 1:23:34
[SPEAKER_01]: And I have this image of the Philippines in my head.
• 1:23:37
[SPEAKER_01]: And then so I go back to the Philippines when I'm older and I'm like, wow, this is like very profound.
• 1:23:41
  [SPEAKER_01]: This is very exciting.
• 1:23:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Kind of the same when they first react when they end up in the car, right?
• 1:23:46
[SPEAKER_01]: But at the same time, it's not exactly like they remember that, right?
• 1:23:51
[SPEAKER_01]: They don't like my parents don't come out like what they were, the version that they remember is a little bit different than the version, like the version I'm sort of low that told them.
• 1:23:58
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it mentions them in an angle, but it's like, you know, not necessarily what see, like her life wasn't constantly in danger, right?
• 1:24:05
  [SPEAKER_01]: I'm guessing, right?
• 1:24:06
[SPEAKER_01]: And so like, it's not exactly what I remember or my parents remember it.
• 1:24:11
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's okay, because like Joe, like WISA, they make their own experiences in the Philippines and their own self-determination of what it means to be, to some degree, a participant on the island of the Cali, I make my own sense of what it means to be Filipino and Filipino American in this world.
• 1:24:29
[SPEAKER_01]: That's going to be a different story.
• 1:24:30
[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be a new memory separate from what
• 1:24:33
[SPEAKER_01]: my low-law, my parents' memory would be of the Philippines, and that's fine, right?
• 1:24:37
[SPEAKER_01]: And at the same time, right?
• 1:24:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Like the idea of, so do you give up your sense of self?
• 1:24:42
[SPEAKER_01]: So do you give up your memories, right?
• 1:24:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Because, again, the memories I have of the My Time and the Philippines of being Filipino-American here in the States, timeie, the part of the larger whole of the larger Filipino diaspora, to my family specifically in the Philippines, and to give up that will lead me to be a lost soul,
• 1:25:02
[SPEAKER_01]: and to not have that experience, so it's about the power of both your own individual memories, but also kind of I think the larger collective memories of being part of a larger diaspora, I think, is part of what this film is getting at as well.
• 1:25:16
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I'll say from someone who is, you know, an outsider to all of this world in this lore, it's just also, it's a fun time in general, like regardless of specificity aside, but that's specific.
• 1:25:34
[SPEAKER_00]: that specificity does to me make it extra interesting.
• 1:25:37
[SPEAKER_00]: And I hope that a lot of people feel the same way that it is like, okay, we know murder creatures and we know dwarves in blah, blah, blah, but here's a new creative twist on it and it's all carried through by just the power of that central friendship that just feels so real.
• 1:25:54
  [SPEAKER_01]: exactly.
• 1:25:55
[SPEAKER_01]: And for the people who will see that that second layer of that second story, either it's not consciously thinking about what that means, but like on a subconscious level resonating with it, I think that that stories like this are even all that more important.
• 1:26:07
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
• 1:26:08
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
• 1:26:10
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and since it's Filipino American, oh, sorry, just Filipino history month in general, right?
• 1:26:16
  [SPEAKER_00]: Worldwide.
• 1:26:17
[SPEAKER_01]: It's funny, so Filipino, in the US, it's in October, Filipino American history month is in October, because that's when Filipino's first landed in the 1500s with the Spanish values in the US.
• 1:26:27
[SPEAKER_01]: Canada, I just found out recently, celebrates it in June, which is like Filipino independence day.
• 1:26:33
[SPEAKER_01]: So different places will follow different things, but in the US, it's Filipino American history month.
• 1:26:38
  [SPEAKER_00]: All right.
• 1:26:38
  [SPEAKER_00]: All right.
• 1:26:39
[SPEAKER_00]: So I wanted us to shout out some more Filipino recommendations.
• 1:26:43
[SPEAKER_00]: One, we've already brought up here and there, which is this animated series on Netflix called Tresse.
• 1:26:50
[SPEAKER_00]: It's only six short episodes.
• 1:26:52
[SPEAKER_00]: So basically, you can watch the whole thing within three hours.
• 1:26:56
[SPEAKER_01]: It's based on the Filipino graphic novel.
• 1:26:58
[SPEAKER_01]: So if you want to read the graphic novel as well, you can do that.
• 1:27:01
[SPEAKER_00]: okay yeah and so it's basically it's about um i don't remember the the term for her but she is a sort of supernatural detective who's helping to protect the balance between the awswang in the towel, okay?
• 1:27:14
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 1:27:15
  [SPEAKER_00]: Kind of.
• 1:27:16
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and yeah, so that, that has, like, right with lore, and it was one, I was really into the first two episodes, the second two episodes, I was starting to, like, get a little bit lost, and then the last two episodes really bring everything together.
• 1:27:32
  [SPEAKER_00]: Awesome.
• 1:27:33
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and then another one that I saw recently, I wanted to shout out also based on the comic book is a new animated movie called Zatuna.
• 1:27:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Zazaza Turner is a, so it's, it's a Filipino graphic novel by Carlo Vergara, I believe it was like in the early 2000s.
• 1:27:52
[SPEAKER_01]: And it is a story of a gay beautician in the Philippines who has this alter ego of this very curvacious superhero in, uh, Zazaza, Karna.
• 1:28:03
[SPEAKER_01]: And it ended up getting a, it's been a graphic novel for a while.
• 1:28:07
[SPEAKER_01]: It's been in production for a long while, I think.
• 1:28:09
[SPEAKER_01]: But they finally, I believe, came out at Anasy, I want to say.
• 1:28:12
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 1:28:13
[SPEAKER_01]: And it had a, it had a, it's a code reduction between Philippines and France.
• 1:28:19
[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, it's been very well received.
• 1:28:20
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm hoping to be able to get the, to find the way to watch it, because definitely one, one I definitely want to be able to get to.
• 1:28:26
[SPEAKER_00]: I got to watch it at a film festival and I loved it.
• 1:28:30
[SPEAKER_00]: So I realized that my top three animated films that I've seen so far and I just want to note I have not yet seen Wildwood, which I'm very excited to see in some others.
• 1:28:38
[SPEAKER_00]: But my top three of the ones I have seen so far, two of them were Filipino I realized that I forgot Nyland and Azazatuna and for the record the other one is a French film called Jim Queen.
• 1:28:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, yeah, but yeah, yeah, so that's the terms, you know, it's kind of like an also an homage to like a Wonder Woman like super heroine called Darina from Philippines.
• 1:29:01
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, what I really liked about it is it is about, as you said, it's about a gay man who has this sort of drag queen superhero alter ego.
• 1:29:09
[SPEAKER_00]: And it is, it goes into like the nuances of this, the difference between being a drag queen and being trans.
• 1:29:17
[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, how he's, he's very much one and not the other.
• 1:29:21
[SPEAKER_00]: And just also about finding your role in gendered society
• 1:29:30
[SPEAKER_00]: are a bit gender-fucking between and just super fun, you know, it's a super hero movie.
• 1:29:36
[SPEAKER_01]: The Philippines is a very interesting relationship with homosexuality, right?
• 1:29:40
[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, a very Catholic country, right?
• 1:29:42
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's like this almost like cultural acceptance of it to some degree.
• 1:29:47
[SPEAKER_01]: One film I didn't put in this list about, I'll just start it out here.
• 1:29:49
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a documentary called Tens Across the Border.
• 1:29:52
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a documentary about Vogueing and Ballroom, that across Southeast Asia, Southeast Asia, I think mostly.
• 1:29:59
[SPEAKER_01]: About three Southeast Asia countries, one of them being the Philippines.
• 1:30:03
[SPEAKER_01]: So it kind of explores that space as well.
• 1:30:05
  [SPEAKER_00]: So it's like Asian Paris's burning.
• 1:30:07
  [SPEAKER_01]: Kind of, yeah.
• 1:30:09
[SPEAKER_00]: And I also, I haven't gotten to see it yet, even though it did premiere at the Rotterdam Film Festival.
• 1:30:15
[SPEAKER_00]: I know someone who did get to see it and said it was very good, but it's a new movie called Moon Glow, which is sounds like it's like a Filipino noir, so I'm very much a part of Moon Glow.
• 1:30:24
[SPEAKER_01]: So Munglo's by Isabel Sundovall, who in 2019 is a, is a, I believe she was an undocumented trans Filipino woman who made a film called Lingua Franca about trans Filipino woman.
• 1:30:39
[SPEAKER_01]: That was, I believe, acquired by Avedu Verne's company and streaming on Netflix.
• 1:30:45
[SPEAKER_01]: So Lingua Franca would be her prior work.
• 1:30:48
[SPEAKER_01]: And then, yeah, Munglo is her newer film.
• 1:30:50
[SPEAKER_01]: That's like, like you said, a new war film.
• 1:30:53
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and you also put in here and yeah, I should have added it also that this is one that I really want to see it's an Oscar container this year the Philippine Yanda
• 1:31:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so Phil Piniana, I've saw this, this was that Sunday and it's been out of the bunch of film festivals, believe it in the US is distributed by Queen Lorber, Phil Piniana.
• 1:31:14
[SPEAKER_01]: It's the Oscar submissive for the Phil Pinases here, it's a feature debut based on the director's sort film, kind of like Wes Anderson meets Paris site set on a Phil Pinocchio, of course, would be like the log line.
• 1:31:27
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it looks like this sort of societal satire that tickles my fancy.
• 1:31:31
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm looking forward to seeing that one.
• 1:31:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the other one I'll shout out is first light.
• 1:31:35
[SPEAKER_01]: It's since I'm on the Oscar podcast.
• 1:31:38
[SPEAKER_01]: It's the Australian submissive in a national feature film by James Robinson.
• 1:31:42
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's as well as first ever submission in Tagalog, actually.
• 1:31:46
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so that is, uh, so that's another one to keep an eye out for that I'm interested in seeing.
• 1:31:51
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, some other things to keep an eye, I watch, you know, if you like comic books, there's one I, I back on Kickstarter recently that I think probably this International Sipping it's called Maharilika.
• 1:32:01
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like an alternate reality comic book of set in the Philippines where whatever the Philippines became a international superpower.
• 1:32:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, it had like science fiction stuff, um, Beanie and SB 19 who are the two, you know, two of the groups that I mentioned in the soundtrack, um, have docu series on Netflix kind of about their behind the scenes of you really enjoyed the music.
• 1:32:21
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you want to check out some of the musical acts behind there.
• 1:32:25
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I am working on a series for Conjo zoom pod.
• 1:32:29
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know how when it's going to come out.
• 1:32:30
[SPEAKER_01]: But about recent Filipino diaspora films, this isn't Canadian, but I have a larger letter box list of just recent films on 25 and 26 of Filipino diaspora films.
• 1:32:40
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure, you know, Lucy, you'll link that in the show notes.
• 1:32:42
[SPEAKER_01]: I also then episode a couple years ago at this point with the code on Conjo zoom of Filipino films specifically.
• 1:32:50
[SPEAKER_01]: So not Filipino-American, but Filipino, like the cinema and scene in the Philippines
• 1:32:55
[SPEAKER_01]: the greatest hits of Filipino cinema, so I'll also link a letterbox list there as well.
• 1:33:00
[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so I will put all of these recommendations, including those two letterbox lists in a list in the show notes.
• 1:33:08
[SPEAKER_00]: So if you want to explore more of that, but what's going on with your Oscar's death race podcast?
• 1:33:14
[SPEAKER_00]: I know you're ramping up for the new season, and you've got this and other stuff going on.
• 1:33:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's kind of the funny, I actually forgot to record my final episode of last season, because I've been watching so many episodes, so I technically need to still map up the final season.
• 1:33:30
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, with all of the new film festival, you know, all the vannas, telleride, Tiff, even New York kind of like it's midway now.
• 1:33:39
[SPEAKER_01]: We kind of have a good sense of like what films are going to be in contention.
• 1:33:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously not a lock at this point, but every year I do a 40 films to watch for the Oscars 40 plus bonus.
• 1:33:50
[SPEAKER_01]: really is going to be 60 films if you want to be real completeness about it.
• 1:33:53
[SPEAKER_01]: But 40 films that you know, you probably should be checking out if you want to be ahead of the game for the Oscar's death face.
• 1:33:59
[SPEAKER_01]: So that's going to be coming out.
• 1:34:00
[SPEAKER_01]: Like I said, I'm baking the rounds on on on various podcasts trying to spread the word about forgotten island.
• 1:34:07
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure I'll write something for the code on the Converting pod.
• 1:34:11
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, and then you know, the full season will come back probably December.
• 1:34:15
[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm thinking about how to retool the season this year.
• 1:34:17
  [SPEAKER_01]: So it's not just
• 1:34:18
[SPEAKER_01]: me blindly talking to a microphone.
• 1:34:20
[SPEAKER_01]: I might want to do something a little bit more produced.
• 1:34:22
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see how that all goes.
• 1:34:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe something more evergreen of like, hey, this is how I think about making predictions and doing like an Oscar metrics, sabre metric style thing of of how to put together an Oscar prediction ballot basically.
• 1:34:37
[SPEAKER_00]: And any early personal favorites for Oscar
• 1:34:43
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the Odyssey is obviously like a very easy one- Sure.
• 1:34:47
[SPEAKER_01]: Haven't seen a little bit of Negra.
• 1:34:48
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just going on my list real quick.
• 1:34:50
[SPEAKER_01]: Haven't seen Wild Horse Nine.
• 1:34:51
  [SPEAKER_01]: Doon 3, Super Excited 4.
• 1:34:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Funny enough, I still have not yet seen Project Hill Mary.
• 1:34:57
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, okay.
• 1:34:59
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's just because it's there, it's on Amazon.
• 1:35:01
[SPEAKER_01]: I can kind of see it whenever I want to see it.
• 1:35:03
[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm not in a few much of us to get through it.
• 1:35:05
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, any Project Hill Mary fans, we have an episode about that in wherever you're listening to this.
• 1:35:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I would say I'm looking forward to all of a sudden, which is the Weishgaharmaguchi, a friend slash Japanese film that's Japan's a misinferiorinational feature film, kind of an outside content for best picture, Robert Eger's, we're we're we're we're we'll coming out, and the year will be one to keep an eye on.
• 1:35:30
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to cover that on most shift dust.
• 1:35:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Godzilla minus zero, of course, is going to be going to be a big one as well.
• 1:35:37
[SPEAKER_01]: And then, yeah, Wildwood, you know, as probably, you know, admittedly, I don't think forgot an island is going to win, but Wildwood, you know, getting an ominous night, I think it's when we can look forward to.
• 1:35:48
[SPEAKER_01]: And then, um, and then possible, love, I think I'll say, is the is another one.
• 1:35:52
[SPEAKER_01]: It's Korean film coming to Netflix.
• 1:35:54
  [SPEAKER_01]: That's their submissive
• 1:36:01
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, and then I do have a couple of tickets for the New York Film Festival coming up, so I'll be watching the World Premiere of Behimoth, which is the Tony Gilmouri, Chelest Film starring Patropascal, and then Artificial, the OpenAI Film starring Andrew Garfield, so definitely looking forward to that one.
• 1:36:22
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, it's definitely, I just got a ticket for a festival like a one day festival here in Amsterdam that's going to be, was it the only pick pocket in New York?
• 1:36:34
[SPEAKER_00]: Fjord, what else is it?
• 1:36:38
[SPEAKER_00]: Fatherland, and Wild Horse Nine, I'm really looking forward to it.
• 1:36:43
[SPEAKER_01]: All of those are definitely going to be on my list of 40 films to watch, so you're getting ahead of the game.
• 1:36:48
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so prime film festival season.
• 1:36:50
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm actually going to put out an episode in this feed soon about that as well.
• 1:36:54
  [SPEAKER_00]: So watch out.
• 1:36:55
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but I mean, the one thing I learned about the Oscars is that when my football team, the Jacksonville Jaguar sat out, Jason Mendoza is doing well.
• 1:37:04
[SPEAKER_01]: It becomes really hard for me to focus on the Oscar race because it's at the same time in like the post season.
• 1:37:09
[SPEAKER_01]: So that's something I'm going to have to figure out this year.
• 1:37:11
[SPEAKER_01]: That was my trouble last year.
• 1:37:13
[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll see how I managed that this year.
• 1:37:16
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, looking forward to going through another Oscar season with you and your podcast.
• 1:37:21
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'll obviously like that in the show notes as well.
• 1:37:24
  [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
• 1:37:25
  [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
• 1:37:25
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'll hopefully get that 40 films to watch episode out today or tomorrow.
• 1:37:29
  [SPEAKER_01]: So.
• 1:37:31
[SPEAKER_00]: OK. Well, did you any final thoughts about forgotten island?
• 1:37:35
[SPEAKER_01]: uh... go what's Filipino cinema or Filipino American cinema go one girl friendship in a magical place with with badass characters who are worth caring about and cool music if you have a Filipino friend this is definitely one to watch with your Filipino friend they will definitely their energy will be there um... i don't know if there's a jolly bee in answer them uh... no i'm not enough
• 1:37:59
  [SPEAKER_00]: I don't need chicken, but yeah.
• 1:38:01
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but if you can, you'll jolly be, you know, go go see that if that's new, you'll eat that if that's new, you and the, yeah, you know, definitely Excited for this to hopefully have a long life and become a cold classic over the years.
• 1:38:12
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, go see it, tell your friends to go see it and tell the internet to vote for it for the Academy.
• 1:38:20
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm still hoping to get it.
• 1:38:22
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm still hoping to get it.
• 1:38:23
[SPEAKER_01]: I still have it in.
• 1:38:24
[SPEAKER_01]: I think the I think the the love within the industry is here for this.
• 1:38:28
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
• 1:38:29
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean it's got strong word of mouth and it's not this is not a box office competition.
• 1:38:34
  [SPEAKER_00]: I hope it does.
• 1:38:35
[SPEAKER_01]: We will see how it goes in the second weekend.
• 1:38:38
[SPEAKER_01]: It stops doesn't drop off too hard and I think it'll it'll have good legs.
• 1:38:42
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, because the word of mouth is on its way on its side and as you said, there isn't going to be much competition in the children cinema side of things.
• 1:38:52
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
• 1:38:53
  [SPEAKER_00]: All right.
• 1:38:54
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, thank you so much.
• 1:38:55
