- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it's Tuesday.
- 0:15It is the 13th of January. Great to have your company.
- 0:19Thank you for inviting me into your day.
- 0:22No matter what you're up to, no matter what part of the day
- 0:24you're up to, we are going to spend this special day, this
- 0:29celebration birthday. Did you realise that today is
- 0:32actually the 138th birthday of the National Geographic Society?
- 0:38That's right, those do you remember those yellow magazines?
- 0:41That I don't know. I used to be a subscriber back
- 0:43in the day when I had time to read magazines and flipping
- 0:46through all those incredible pictures and stories about the
- 0:49world. 1888 is when National Geographic first formed and hear
- 0:55this. Their mission was to increase
- 0:57and diffuse geographic knowledge while promoting the conservation
- 1:01of the world's cultural, historic and natural resources.
- 1:05That sounds like a wonderful goal, doesn't it?
- 1:08And yeah, I'm sure there's politics and drama within the
- 1:11society, but I have certainly enjoyed my National Geographic
- 1:15interactions. But that is this world that we
- 1:18live in and we are today going to read story about how this
- 1:22world intersects with the universal and the incredible and
- 1:27the theological far beyond the bounds of our world as the God
- 1:32of the universe reduces himself to human form and comes to live
- 1:36amongst us. And today's reading there is
- 1:39lots of Jesus teaching and challenging those around him.
- 1:43So let us step back, open our hearts and say, Come Holy
- 1:46Spirit, may the words of Jesus touch us fresh today so that we
- 1:53can hear your message for us and our life and be humbled,
- 1:58motivated and arrested by all you have to say.
- 2:05All right friends, nothing left to do then to read together.
- 2:08Luke chapter 12. Meanwhile, the crowds grew until
- 2:22thousands were milling about and stepping on each other.
- 2:26Jesus first turned to his disciples and warned them,
- 2:29Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, their hypocrisy.
- 2:33The time is coming when everything that is covered up
- 2:36will be revealed and all that is secret will be made known to
- 2:40all. Whatever you have said in the
- 2:42dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered
- 2:46behind closed doors will be shouted from the housetops for
- 2:49all to hear. Dear friends, don't be afraid of
- 2:53those who want to kill your body.
- 2:55They cannot do any more to you after that.
- 2:58But I'll tell you whom to fear. Fear God, who has the power to
- 3:02kill you and then throw you into hell.
- 3:05Yes, He's the one to fear. What is the price of five
- 3:09sparrows? 2 copper coins.
- 3:12Yet God does not forget a single one of them, and the very hairs
- 3:17on your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid.
- 3:21You are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.
- 3:27I tell you the truth, everyone who acknowledges me publicly
- 3:31here on earth, the Son of Man will also acknowledge in the
- 3:34presence of God's angels. But anyone who denies me here on
- 3:39earth will be denied before God's angels.
- 3:43Anyone who speaks against the Son of Man can be forgiven, but
- 3:46anyone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
- 3:50And when you are brought to trial in the synagogues and
- 3:55before rulers and authorities, don't worry about how to defend
- 3:58yourself for what to say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you
- 4:02at that time what needs to be said.
- 4:07Then someone called from the crowd, Teacher, please tell my
- 4:10brother to divide our Father's estate with me.
- 4:14Jesus replied, Friend, who made me a judge over you to decide
- 4:19such things as that. Then he said, beware.
- 4:23Guard against every kind of greed.
- 4:26Life is not measured by how much you own.
- 4:29Then he told them a story. A rich man had a fertile farm
- 4:33that produced fine crops. He said to himself, what should
- 4:37I do? I don't have room for all my
- 4:39crops. Then he said, I know I'll tear
- 4:42down my barns and build bigger ones.
- 4:45Then I'll have room enough to store all my wheats and other
- 4:48goods. And I'll sit back and say to
- 4:50myself, my friend, you have enough stored away for years to
- 4:54come. Now take it easy, eat, drink and
- 4:57be merry. But God said to him, You fool,
- 5:01you will die this very night. Then who will get everything you
- 5:05worked for? Yes, a person is a fool to store
- 5:09up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.
- 5:15Then turning to his disciples, Jesus said, that is why I tell
- 5:19you not to worry about everyday life, whether you have enough
- 5:22food to eat or enough clothes to wear.
- 5:25For life is more than food, and your body more than clothing.
- 5:29Look at the Ravens. They don't plant or harvest or
- 5:32store food in barns. For God feeds them, and you are
- 5:36far more valuable to Him than any birds.
- 5:40Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?
- 5:44And if worry can't accomplish a little thing like that, what's
- 5:47the use of worrying over bigger things?
- 5:50Look at the lilies and how they grow.
- 5:53They don't work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his
- 5:57glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are.
- 6:01And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today
- 6:05and thrown into the fire tomorrow, He will certainly care
- 6:09for you. Why do you have so little faith?
- 6:13And don't be concerned about what to eat and what to drink.
- 6:16Don't worry about such things. These things dominate the
- 6:19thoughts of unbelievers all over the world.
- 6:22But your Father already knows your needs.
- 6:25Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and He will give you
- 6:30everything you need. So don't be afraid, little
- 6:33flock, for it gives your Father great happiness to give you the
- 6:37Kingdom. Sell your possessions and give
- 6:40it to those in need. This will store up treasure for
- 6:43you in heaven, and the purses of heaven never get old or develop
- 6:48holes. Your treasure will be safe.
- 6:51No thief can steal it, and no moth can destroy it.
- 6:55Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will
- 6:59also be. Be dressed for service and keep
- 7:03your lamps burning as though you were waiting for your master to
- 7:06return from the wedding feast. Then you will be ready to open
- 7:10the door and let him in. The moment he arrives and
- 7:13knocks, the servants who are ready and waiting for his return
- 7:17will be rewarded. I tell you the truth, He himself
- 7:21will seat them, put on an apron, and serve them as they sit and
- 7:25eat. He may come in the middle of the
- 7:28night or just before dawn, but whenever he comes, he will
- 7:31reward the servants who are ready.
- 7:34Understand this, If a home owner knew exactly when a burglar was
- 7:39coming, he would not permit his house to be broken into.
- 7:42You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will
- 7:46come when least expected. Peter asked.
- 7:50Lord, is that illustration just for us or for everyone?
- 7:55And the Lord replied, A faithful, sensible servant is 1
- 8:00to whom the master can give the responsibility of managing his
- 8:03other household servants and feeding them.
- 8:07If the master returns and finds that the servant has done a good
- 8:09job, there will be a reward. I tell you the truth, the master
- 8:15will put that servant in charge of all he owns.
- 8:18But what if the servant thinks my master won't be back for a
- 8:22while and he begins beating the other servants, partying and
- 8:25getting drunk? The master will return
- 8:28unannounced and unexpected, and he will cut the servant in
- 8:32pieces and banish him with the unfaithful.
- 8:36And a servant who knows what his master wants but isn't prepared
- 8:40and doesn't carry out those instructions will be severely
- 8:43punished. But if someone who does not know
- 8:46and then does something wrong, he will be punished only
- 8:49lightly. When someone has been given
- 8:52much, much will be required in return.
- 8:55And when someone has been entrusted with much, even more
- 8:58will be required. I've come to set the world on
- 9:03fire, and I wish it were already burning.
- 9:06I have a terrible baptism of suffering ahead of me and I am
- 9:10under a heavy burden until it is accomplished.
- 9:14Do you think I've come to bring peace to the earth?
- 9:17No, I have come to divide people against each other.
- 9:21From now on, families will be split apart 3IN favour of me and
- 9:26two against or two in favour and three against.
- 9:30Father will be divided against son and son against father,
- 9:34mother against daughter, and daughter against mother and
- 9:37mother in law against daughter in law and daughter in
- 10:07Why can't you decide for yourselves what is right?
- 10:13Try to settle the matter before you get there.
- 10:16Otherwise your accuser may drag you before the judge, who will
- 10:20hand you over to an officer who will throw you into prison.
- 10:24And if that happens, you won't be free again until you have
- 10:28paid the very last penny. Ah, Jesus, thank you for your
- 10:43words of truth, Your words that help sharpen our focus and shift
- 10:48our hearts away from everything that our lives here tell us is
- 10:54important so that we can focus on you and your Kingdom.
- 10:58You say again and again here that we are not to be overly
- 11:03concerned and worried about building up a treasure here for
- 11:08us in this world, but instead to rest in Your arms, to work hard
- 11:15for Your Kingdom and to know that as we do that you've got
- 11:19our back and that You will care for us.
- 11:23So Lord, shift our focus. Shift our focus from our
- 11:27superannuation balance here to our superannuation with you.
- 11:33And not that that means that we kick back now and do nothing,
- 11:36but to know that it's your Kingdom that we work for that
- 11:40will bring eternal change and eternal good.
- 11:45So we just pray that you continue the work of
- 11:48recalibrating our hearts and drawing US ever closer to you,
- 11:52oh our wonderful, wonderful Saviour and our loving God.
- 11:57And we pray all of this in your mighty name, Jesus, Amen.
