Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The Expanded Field of Consciousness Beyond the External Awareness
Transcript
- 0:01Consider that we remove ourselves from active
- 0:04participation in the external world and its activities for
- 0:08some 30% of our lifetimes while we are asleep.
- 0:12Sleep provides the physical body, life, mind complex with
- 0:16the opportunity to undertake basic maintenance, repair the
- 0:20body, soothe the life energies and refresh the brain function.
- 0:26What happens to our consciousness during sleep?
- 0:30Consider further that we are constantly receiving and sending
- 0:35out electrical signals, impulses and vibrational patterns that we
- 0:40are not consciously attending to, but which nevertheless
- 0:44create their own effects within us and on the world around us.
- 0:49Reflect on the fact that there are experiences we have at
- 0:53various times when our external consciousness is withdrawn, such
- 0:57as experiential dreams where we are meeting individuals, going
- 1:02to places and taking actions that are not based in our waking
- 1:06lives or in near death experiences or in out of body
- 1:11experiences, including phenomena such as astral travel.
- 1:16It becomes clear that our consciousness is functioning on
- 1:20other planes and in other circumstances during the times
- 1:25it is not actively participating in the external world of our
- 1:30waking state. Many have reported seeing and
- 1:34meeting teachers and gurus and receiving profound insights
- 1:38while their physical being was asleep.
- 1:41They return from these experiences with inner growth,
- 1:45new levels of knowledge, and used the sleep state as a field
- 1:49for progress in their yogic endeavor.
- 1:53We also know that we process things on multiple different
- 1:56levels at the same time. People who are questioned about
- 2:00events under the technique of hypnosis are able to describe
- 2:05specific details that their waking processing did not grasp.
- 2:10We filter out much of what occurs to make our waking lives
- 2:13more efficient, but it is nevertheless received and stored
- 2:18at a subliminal level and available under the right
- 2:22circumstances to be brought to conscious awareness.
- 2:27Yogis shift their awareness through a state of yogic trance
- 2:32such that it is said that day for the ordinary man is night
- 2:36for the Yogi and day for the Yogi is night for the ordinary
- 2:40man. This indicates that there are
- 2:43other states of awareness available to human beings than
- 2:47that of the surface waking consciousness.
- 2:51Sri Aurobindo writes quote It is a mistake to think that we live
- 2:56physically only with the outer mind and life.
- 3:00We are all the time living and acting on other planes of
- 3:03consciousness, meeting others there and acting upon them and
- 3:07what we do and feel and think there.
- 3:10The forces we gather, the results we prepare, have an
- 3:14incalculable importance and effect unknown to us upon our
- 3:19outer life. Not all of it comes through, and
- 3:24what comes through takes another form in the physical, though
- 3:27sometimes there is an exact correspondence.
- 3:31But this little is at the basis of our outward existence.
- 3:36All that we become and do and bear in the physical life is
- 3:40prepared behind the veil within us.
- 3:43It is therefore of immense importance for a yoga which aims
- 3:47at the transformation of life to grow conscious of what goes on
- 3:52within these domains, to be master there and be able to
- 3:56feel, know and deal with the secret forces that determine our
- 4:02destiny and our internal and external growth or decline.
