- 0:00Speaker 1: Blackie Carmichael has served five years in prison, and when
- 0:03Speaker 1: he emerges, he sets out to settle his account with
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Shadow. His crimes are meant to draw the invisible
- 0:10Speaker 1: crime fighter toward a trap on an isolated island in
- 0:14Speaker 1: White Lake, drawing Lamont Cranston and Margo Lane into the pursuit.
- 0:19Speaker 1: From the Blue Coal-sponsored Mutual Run, this is episode 163
- 0:25Speaker 1: of The Shadow, first heard March 12, 1939, with Bill
- 0:30Speaker 1: Johnstone as Lamont Cranston and Agnes Moorhead as Margo Lane.
- 0:36Speaker 1: And now, our story begins.
- 0:38Speaker 2: The Shadow.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?
- 1:00Speaker 4: The shadow knows.
- 1:09Speaker 5: Your local blue coal dealer presents The Shadow. These half-hour
- 1:14Speaker 5: dramatizations are designed to forcibly demonstrate to old and young alike...
- 1:19Speaker 5: That crime does not pay. In a moment, we begin
- 1:27Speaker 5: the first act of today's story. Meanwhile, homeowners, remember that
- 1:31Speaker 5: there's only one coal that's color trademarked. It's a coal
- 1:35Speaker 5: that guarantees you better heat with less furnace attention. And
- 1:39Speaker 5: that's blue coal. So when you order your next fuel supply,
- 1:44Speaker 5: make sure you ask for blue coal by name. You'll
- 1:47Speaker 5: see what a difference this quality-tested hard coal makes in
- 1:51Speaker 5: heating comfort and satisfaction. You'll join the countless thousands of
- 1:55Speaker 5: people everywhere who agree that blue coal is the finest
- 1:59Speaker 5: American hard coal money can buy. The shadow, mysterious character
- 2:08Speaker 5: who aids those in distress and helps the forces of
- 2:11Speaker 5: law and order is in reality Lamont Cranston, wealthy young
- 2:15Speaker 5: man about town. Cranston's friend and companion, the lovely Margo Lane,
- 2:20Speaker 5: is the only person who knows to whom the unseen
- 2:22Speaker 5: voice belongs. The only one who knows the true identity
- 2:26Speaker 5: of that master of other people's minds, the Shadow. Today's story,
- 2:31Speaker 5: Appointment with Death.
- 2:34Speaker 6: Number 2214, Warden.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Oh, yes. Come in, Blackie. All right, Joe, you can go. Yes, sir.
- 2:49Speaker 5: Well, Blackie, how does your new suit fit?
- 2:52Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Better than what I've been wearing.
- 2:55Speaker 5: Here's your railroad fare and the money you've earned since
- 2:58Speaker 5: you've been here in prison. It's not a bad little sum.
- 3:01Speaker 5: Ought to help you over the first bumps. Blackie, you've
- 3:05Speaker 5: been in this institution for five years. That in itself
- 3:08Speaker 5: should prove to you that crime doesn't pay. Now, you've
- 3:12Speaker 5: paid your debt to society. The slate's clean. Now it's
- 3:16Speaker 5: up to you to go out, get yourself a job,
- 3:18Speaker 5: and live within the law. I'm free now, Warden, right? Yes, Blackie,
- 3:22Speaker 5: you're no longer a number.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Then I can say what I want. Yes, that's right.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Well, then can that line of gab you handed me.
- 3:28Speaker 3: I served my five years here. Well, now I'm going
- 3:31Speaker 3: out in the world, but I ain't going out to
- 3:33Speaker 3: live within the law.
- 3:35Speaker 4: You're a fool if you don't, Blackie. That's what you say.
- 3:38Speaker 4: I've seen men.
- 3:39Speaker 5: With your attitude go out of here before, and I've
- 3:41Speaker 5: seen them come back.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Some of them to sit in the electric chair.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Well, maybe I'll be back to sit in the chair
- 3:47Speaker 3: and maybe not. But I'm going to get the guy
- 3:49Speaker 3: that put me in here.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Nobody put you here but yourself. I can't, that warden.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Sounds all right from your side of the fence, but
- 3:56Speaker 3: you ain't talking my language. All the years I've been here,
- 4:00Speaker 3: night and day, in my cell, in the workshop, in
- 4:02Speaker 3: the recreation yard, I thought of one thing. Get the
- 4:05Speaker 3: guy that put me in here.
- 4:07Speaker 4: Well, who is this fellow you think you're going to get?
- 4:10Speaker 3: He's a guy they call the Shadow. And I don't
- 4:14Speaker 3: just think I'm going to get him, Warden.
- 4:15Speaker 4: I know it.
- 4:16Speaker 3: I'm going to crush him just as I crushed this
- 4:18Speaker 3: half a dollar with my fist.
- 4:22Speaker 4: There. By George. Bend almost double. All right, all right.
- 4:34Speaker 3: There's no two ways about it. You guys have got
- 4:36Speaker 3: to go along with me. You're the big shots of
- 4:38Speaker 3: every racket in this town. This shadow is as much
- 4:41Speaker 3: an enemy of yours as he is of mine. If
- 4:43Speaker 3: you don't get him, sooner or later he'll get you.
- 4:48Speaker 4: Well, what do you say? Well, how do you figure
- 4:50Speaker 4: you're going to get this, Shadow Blackie? I'll tell you
- 4:52Speaker 4: that later. First, I want to know if you're going
- 4:54Speaker 4: along with me.
- 4:55Speaker 7: Sure, we'd do anything to get this guy, but how
- 4:57Speaker 7: do we know you can do it?
- 4:58Speaker 3: I spent five years figuring that one out. I got
- 5:01Speaker 3: it all set up perfect. Well, can't you give us
- 5:04Speaker 3: some idea how you're going to do it? All right.
- 5:07Speaker 4: First, I'm going to get the guy on my trail.
- 5:09Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 5:10Speaker 5: How?
- 5:10Speaker 3: I'm going to lay a trail of robbery and murder
- 5:13Speaker 3: across the city that'll shake the whole country. I'm going
- 5:16Speaker 3: to lead him right to my door. But this time,
- 5:19Speaker 3: I'm going to be all set for him. But you
- 5:21Speaker 3: can't see this guy, Blackie. Yeah, I know. He hypnotizes you.
- 5:25Speaker 3: But he's no further away than his voice. He can
- 5:27Speaker 3: be gotten.
- 5:29Speaker 4: And I figured out just the way to do it. Well, okay, Blackie.
- 5:33Speaker 7: I don't know how you're going to work this out,
- 5:34Speaker 7: but we're your friends for life if you do.
- 5:38Speaker 4: What do you want us to do?
- 5:39Speaker 3: Nothing more than lay out some dough. I want you
- 5:42Speaker 3: to buy me an island.
- 5:43Speaker 4: An island? That's what I said.
- 5:45Speaker 3: There's a little patch of land no bigger than half
- 5:47Speaker 3: a city block. It sits right in the middle of
- 5:49Speaker 3: White Lake, right outside of town. There's a shack on it.
- 5:53Speaker 3: That's going to be my hideout. That's where I'm going
- 5:55Speaker 3: to lead the shadow. And that's where I'm going to
- 5:58Speaker 3: knock him off Well.
- 6:00Speaker 7: If you're sure you can do this, I want to
- 6:02Speaker 7: be in on the kill.
- 6:03Speaker 4: All right, Frank, I'll need company. You're in. Okay, Blackie,
- 6:06Speaker 4: the island's yours. Thanks.
- 6:09Speaker 3: You're getting a swell bargain. The shadow for a piece
- 6:13Speaker 3: of dead.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Hey, Lester. Five gallons, 95 cents. 95 cents? All right.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Here you are.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Good night, sir.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Bye.
- 6:44Speaker 4: Here, here, little man.
- 6:46Speaker 5: You toddle back to the car and sit with mother
- 6:48Speaker 5: till I lock up the gas station. Oh, you want
- 6:50Speaker 5: daddy to carry you back, huh?
- 6:53Speaker 4: Lost your tongue? All right, then.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Come on, now.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Up you go. Are you about ready to go, John? Yes, Mary.
- 6:59Speaker 4: It won't take me more than a few minutes now.
- 7:01Speaker 4: Pretty late to have this little man out.
- 7:03Speaker 9: It's so lonesome down at the house, I thought we'd
- 7:05Speaker 9: come out and.
- 7:05Speaker 4: Drive you home. Oh, that was nice of you, Mary,
- 7:07Speaker 4: and I certainly appreciate it. Here now, son. In the
- 7:10Speaker 4: car with you. There you are. Well, what's this?
- 7:15Speaker 5: Another customer? Gosh, business is picking up. I'll take care
- 7:20Speaker 5: of this one in a hurry, Mary.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Be right back. Yes, sir. What can I do for you?
- 7:27Speaker 4: Fill her up.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Make it snappy. Yes, sir.
- 7:29Speaker 4: Would you cut your motor, please? Cut my motor? What for?
- 7:32Speaker 5: Well, it's pretty dangerous putting gasoline in a car with
- 7:34Speaker 5: a motor running.
- 7:35Speaker 4: All right.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Never mind the gas. Let's take a walk under that
- 7:37Speaker 3: shanty of yours.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Say, what is this? A stick-up?
- 7:40Speaker 3: Your dope's right, brother. Get going.
- 7:41Speaker 4: This gun talks loud. John! Pipe down, lady, if you
- 7:44Speaker 4: know what's good for you. Wait a minute, buddy.
- 7:46Speaker 5: You've come to the wrong place. I've got exactly $ 9
- 7:48Speaker 5: in my till. That's my receipts for the whole day,
- 7:51Speaker 5: and it's bread and butter for that woman and child
- 7:53Speaker 5: in the car over there.
- 7:54Speaker 4: And I'm not giving it away.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Never mind the long-winded story. I'm here for business. Now
- 7:57Speaker 3: step on it.
- 7:58Speaker 4: Yeah? I'll step on it, all right.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Tough guy, huh? Now your wife and kid can use
- 8:08Speaker 3: that nine bucks to buy you a funeral wreath.
- 8:19Speaker 5: Special, extra, wife and child witness murder, extra, extra, wanton
- 8:24Speaker 5: killer loose.
- 8:25Speaker 2: In the city.
- 8:26Speaker 6: Read all about it.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Hello, Commissioner Weston speaking. Who?
- 8:39Speaker 5: Daily Express. No, no, there are no new developments in
- 8:43Speaker 5: that killing yet. Well, give us a chance. We've just
- 8:46Speaker 5: gotten started. I know it was a horrible crime, and
- 8:51Speaker 5: I'm more anxious than you are to clear it up. Okay,
- 8:53Speaker 5: I'll let you know as soon as there's a break.
- 8:56Speaker 5: This phone will drive me crazy. It hasn't stopped ringing
- 8:58Speaker 5: since that gas station man was murdered. Go ahead, Cardona,
- 9:01Speaker 5: finish your report. What did you find?
- 9:03Speaker 7: Well, I found a man who was driving along just
- 9:05Speaker 7: as the killer pulled out of the gas station.
- 9:08Speaker 4: He trailed the murder car for a while, but he.
- 9:10Speaker 7: Lost it near White Lake. Did he get a license number? No,
- 9:13Speaker 7: he couldn't get close enough. We're certainly up against a
- 9:15Speaker 7: tough one this time. The town's up in arms. We've
- 9:18Speaker 7: got to crack this case somehow. There goes that phone again.
- 9:21Speaker 4: Just a minute, Cardona. Hello? Who's this? It's the Shadow. Oh, you. Well,
- 9:30Speaker 4: what do you want?
- 9:31Speaker 5: I suppose you're calling him about that gas station murder.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Quite right, Commissioner. Are you making any progress? Very little.
- 9:37Speaker 5: The case is worse than a jigsaw puzzle with nearly
- 9:40Speaker 5: all the parts missing.
- 9:42Speaker 8: It was a particularly vicious crime, Commissioner. And I want
- 9:45Speaker 8: to assist in any way possible to bring about the
- 9:47Speaker 8: capture of the murderer.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Well, this case has got me. I'm willing to accept
- 9:51Speaker 4: help from anybody. Got any dope at all, Shadow? First
- 9:54Speaker 4: let me ask you if you have any theory. Simple enough.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Robbery was the motive. Are you sure about that, Commissioner? Positive.
- 10:02Speaker 4: The man resisted and was shot. That's simple enough.
- 10:05Speaker 8: I'm afraid it's not as simple as that, Commissioner. Isn't
- 10:09Speaker 8: it strange that the killer passed many a prosperous large
- 10:12Speaker 8: gas station? Yet he picked out this obviously poverty-stricken one.
- 10:16Speaker 5: I haven't got any answer for that except most crooks
- 10:19Speaker 5: are dumb.
- 10:20Speaker 4: No, Commissioner.
- 10:22Speaker 8: I feel certain the killer deliberately planned his crime so
- 10:25Speaker 8: that it would shock and outrage the community. That's why
- 10:28Speaker 8: he picked on that poor gas station man.
- 10:30Speaker 4: Well, that sounds a little bit involved to me.
- 10:32Speaker 5: Maybe you're right, but just a minute, Shadow. There's a
- 10:35Speaker 5: teletype message coming in. May have some bearing on this case.
- 10:38Speaker 5: Let's see what it is, Cardona.
- 10:39Speaker 4: Right, Commissioner. Hey, Commissioner, get this. What is it, Cat owner? Listen.
- 10:50Speaker 7: Mystery gunman robbed and killed restaurant owner at Huster Point
- 10:53Speaker 7: near midnight tonight.
- 10:56Speaker 4: Crime of the same.
- 10:57Speaker 7: Character and undoubtedly committed by man who killed gas station owner.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Good Lord. What is it, Commissioner? What's the matter?
- 11:04Speaker 5: Another killing at Huster Point. Shadow, we're dealing with a madman.
- 11:10Speaker 5: We've got to get.
- 11:10Speaker 4: Him at once. Excuse me now, Commissioner. There's work to
- 11:13Speaker 4: be done. And quickly.
- 11:14Speaker 7: Wait.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Tell me what you're going to do.
- 11:15Speaker 8: I don't know exactly. But one thing is certain. I
- 11:19Speaker 8: won't rest until the man responsible for these crimes is
- 11:22Speaker 8: brought to justice.
- 11:31Speaker 4: A couple robbed on Lonely Road.
- 11:34Speaker 5: Mystery gunman terrorizes city.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Read all about it.
- 11:38Speaker 5: © BF-WATCH TV 2021.
- 12:12Speaker 9: Lamont, this gunman seems to have an insatiable thirst for crime.
- 12:16Speaker 9: He's held up over ten places in the last 24 hours.
- 12:19Speaker 8: He's a shrewd and dangerous man, Margot. It'll not be
- 12:23Speaker 8: easy to capture him.
- 12:24Speaker 9: It seems so utterly hopeless, the chance of even finding
- 12:27Speaker 9: out who he is.
- 12:28Speaker 4: Margot, criminals all make mistakes.
- 12:32Speaker 8: And this killer has already made one.
- 12:35Speaker 4: The one that may trip him. Have you an idea
- 12:38Speaker 4: who he is?
- 12:39Speaker 8: Do you remember the description of the killer that young
- 12:41Speaker 8: woman gave us?
- 12:42Speaker 9: You mean the wife of the murdered gas station man?
- 12:44Speaker 4: Yes.
- 12:45Speaker 9: Yes, I remember, but the description made no particular impression
- 12:48Speaker 9: on me.
- 12:49Speaker 4: I think I know the man she described. You do?
- 12:52Speaker 4: Who is he? Do you remember Blackie Carmichael?
- 12:55Speaker 10: Oh, I'll never forget him.
- 12:57Speaker 9: He's the one who swore in court that he would
- 12:59Speaker 9: get the shadow when he got out of prison.
- 13:01Speaker 4: That's right. Well, Blackie Carmichael is out of prison.
- 13:06Speaker 9: You think he's the man responsible for all these killings?
- 13:09Speaker 8: I'm not certain, Margot. But there's one significant fact. The
- 13:13Speaker 8: murders have all been committed since Blackie got out.
- 13:16Speaker 9: This is a very dangerous case, Lamont. Dangerous for you,
- 13:21Speaker 9: I mean. Don't forget that Carmichael swore to get the shadow.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Forget? Hardly.
- 13:27Speaker 8: I'm well aware of his threat. And I know he's
- 13:30Speaker 8: not likely to forget it either. This case will mean
- 13:33Speaker 8: the end of Blackie Carmichael... For the end of The Shadow.
- 13:49Speaker 5: The Shadow's adventure continues in a few moments. You know, friends,
- 13:53Speaker 5: if germs could talk, I'll bet they'd say hurrah for
- 13:56Speaker 5: March weather. It makes it a cinch for us to
- 13:58Speaker 5: spread colds and illness. If the thermometer outside your window
- 14:02Speaker 5: could talk, you'd hear it say, boy, I certainly have
- 14:05Speaker 5: my ups and downs this month. And if your furnace
- 14:08Speaker 5: could talk, it would say, just keep me fed with
- 14:12Speaker 5: blue coal and I'll keep your house at a steady,
- 14:15Speaker 5: healthful temperature no matter how those March winds blow.
- 14:19Speaker 4: Well, that's right.
- 14:20Speaker 5: Heating your home with blue coal during these days of
- 14:23Speaker 5: quick-changing temperatures and lowered physical resistance helps avoid late winter
- 14:28Speaker 5: colds and illness. For blue coal's even, dependable heat stops
- 14:33Speaker 5: extreme variations of temperature inside the house. And you know
- 14:37Speaker 5: how dangerous to health overheating or sudden chilling of rooms
- 14:40Speaker 5: can be. Then, too, you'll find that blue coal banks
- 14:45Speaker 5: and burns better. It gives longer intervals between firing and
- 14:49Speaker 5: cuts down the time and trouble of constant furnace attentions.
- 14:53Speaker 4: The harmless blue.
- 14:53Speaker 5: Coloring which identifies blue coal is more than just a
- 14:57Speaker 5: trademark of quality. It's your guarantee from the nation's largest
- 15:01Speaker 5: coal company, Glenn Alden, that you're getting the finest hard
- 15:05Speaker 5: coal money can buy.
- 15:07Speaker 4: So if you want.
- 15:08Speaker 5: Perfect heating comfort and satisfaction guaranteed, order a supply of
- 15:12Speaker 5: blue coal tomorrow morning.
- 15:15Speaker 4: Call your nearest dealer.
- 15:16Speaker 5: His name is listed in the where to buy it
- 15:18Speaker 5: section of your classified phone directory under.
- 15:21Speaker 4: The words Blue coal. Well, Blackie, did you see anything? No, Frank, nothing.
- 15:42Speaker 3: I don't expect to see the guy I'm after.
- 15:44Speaker 4: You sure got me stumped.
- 15:46Speaker 7: I can't figure how you're going to get a guy
- 15:48Speaker 7: you can't see.
- 15:50Speaker 4: Just wait. You'll be in on it when it happens.
- 15:53Speaker 3: You can tell your grandchildren you saw Blackie Carmichael strangle
- 15:57Speaker 3: the Shadow with his own two hands.
- 15:59Speaker 4: That'd be something to talk about, all right, but... Listen, Blackie, if.
- 16:04Speaker 7: You want to lead the Shadow here to this island,
- 16:06Speaker 7: why do you cover up every time you knock somebody off?
- 16:08Speaker 3: Because I don't want the cops to get wise first.
- 16:11Speaker 3: I'm making it tough for them.
- 16:13Speaker 7: You may be making it tough for the Shadow, too.
- 16:16Speaker 3: No, no, no. He's a smart egg. He got me
- 16:18Speaker 3: the last time when I was well out to sea
- 16:20Speaker 3: on the cleanest getaway a guy ever planned.
- 16:22Speaker 7: And you'd thrown out enough bait. He ought to bite
- 16:25Speaker 7: soon if he's ever gonna.
- 16:26Speaker 3: Frankie, the biggest fish is a sucker for the right
- 16:30Speaker 3: kind of bait.
- 16:31Speaker 4: You sure raised an awful rumpus, all right.
- 16:34Speaker 7: Ten stick-ups in 24 hours.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Boy, that's knocking him off. You think that's something? Why,
- 16:40Speaker 3: I'm just starting. I'm gonna keep pegging him until I
- 16:43Speaker 3: wear calluses on my trigger finger.
- 16:57Speaker 4: Drive a little further down the lake shore, Muggle. We'll
- 17:00Speaker 4: be able to see the island just around this next bend.
- 17:02Speaker 9: What do you expect to find, Bear Lamont?
- 17:04Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 17:06Speaker 8: But I've noticed that nearly every one of these robberies,
- 17:09Speaker 8: the hold-up car was seen in this vicinity.
- 17:12Speaker 4: Here we are, Muggle. Pull up right here. All right. Yeah.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Look.
- 17:19Speaker 4: There's the island I've been telling you about. Out there
- 17:21Speaker 4: in the middle of the lake.
- 17:22Speaker 9: But I understand that island's deserted.
- 17:24Speaker 10: Nobody's lived there for years.
- 17:26Speaker 4: I'm not so sure about that, Margot. That's one of
- 17:29Speaker 4: the points I must be satisfied about.
- 17:31Speaker 10: You mean you're going out there to investigate?
- 17:33Speaker 4: Yes, Margot. At least the shadow is. How are you
- 17:37Speaker 4: going to do it? I'm going to swim out.
- 17:40Speaker 10: Swim?
- 17:40Speaker 4: Way out there?
- 17:42Speaker 9: Why not see if we can find a boat or something?
- 17:45Speaker 4: Why, no. That wouldn't do, Margot.
- 17:48Speaker 8: The shadow can make himself invisible, but if there's anybody
- 17:51Speaker 8: out there... They'd certainly be suspicious if they saw a
- 17:54Speaker 8: boat approach, rowed by unseen hands.
- 17:58Speaker 4: Oh, yes, of course. I must be going. Don't forget
- 18:02Speaker 4: my instructions, Margo.
- 18:03Speaker 10: Yes, I've got them well in mind.
- 18:04Speaker 3: I'm to wait here for an hour.
- 18:06Speaker 9: If you're not back in that time, it'll be a
- 18:08Speaker 9: signal you've found somebody or something on the island. In
- 18:12Speaker 9: that case, I'm to phone Commissioner Weston and have.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Him surround the island. Correct, Margo. What time is it?
- 18:17Speaker 10: Exactly 11.50.
- 18:18Speaker 7: Good.
- 18:20Speaker 4: I'll be on my way. But don't forget, Margo.
- 18:23Speaker 7: At 12.50, you have a date with the shadow. This
- 18:39Speaker 7: is getting me, I tell you, Blackie. I can't stand
- 18:42Speaker 7: it anymore.
- 18:43Speaker 3: Well, go on in the shack and take a sleep.
- 18:44Speaker 4: No, I'm getting off this island. Who said you was?
- 18:47Speaker 4: I say so.
- 18:48Speaker 7: I'm going nuts waiting while you keep staring at that water.
- 18:51Speaker 3: You close that trap of yours or you'll be carried
- 18:54Speaker 3: off this island.
- 18:55Speaker 7: Now, Blackie, be reasonable, will you? This is a screwy idea.
- 19:01Speaker 7: We can't wait around here for a guy that may
- 19:03Speaker 7: never show up. I got things to do.
- 19:04Speaker 6: Listen, you.
- 19:05Speaker 3: You're in on this, see? And you're staying into the finish.
- 19:11Speaker 3: You get me?
- 19:11Speaker 4: Yeah, for Pete's sake, Blackie, let go. You'll break my arm.
- 19:15Speaker 4: Are you doing as I say? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay.
- 19:21Speaker 3: I don't want to hear no more squawking.
- 19:24Speaker 4: You've got a grip like nothing human. My arm felt
- 19:27Speaker 4: like it was in a steel vise. Quiet down. Quiet.
- 19:31Speaker 4: What's up? What's the matter? Look. Right along where I'm pointing.
- 19:38Speaker 4: When the moon hits the water.
- 19:39Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 19:41Speaker 4: You see anything?
- 19:43Speaker 3: Just a ripple in the water. That's all I see.
- 19:46Speaker 3: Some ripple. It's the one I've been looking for every
- 19:50Speaker 3: night since I'm here. What do you think it is?
- 19:54Speaker 4: It's a man swimming. You're nuts. I don't see no man.
- 19:59Speaker 4: Maybe it's just a fish. Fish is good. It's the
- 20:03Speaker 4: fish I've been putting my bait out for. What? Say, Blackie...
- 20:09Speaker 4: You don't figure that's the shadow, do you? That's my dope.
- 20:12Speaker 4: I'm willing to lay a bet on it. I get
- 20:14Speaker 4: it now. This is the way you've been planning it
- 20:17Speaker 4: all the time.
- 20:19Speaker 7: That guy can hide himself, but he can't hide the
- 20:21Speaker 7: ripple in the water.
- 20:22Speaker 4: That's what I've been figuring for five years.
- 20:26Speaker 3: I know this shadow can hypnotize you so you can't
- 20:28Speaker 3: see him, but he's a body just the same.
- 20:31Speaker 4: So I doped out this idea.
- 20:34Speaker 3: If I could get him into water, I still wouldn't
- 20:37Speaker 3: be able to see him. But I could see where
- 20:40Speaker 3: he rippled the water. Then I could grab.
- 20:43Speaker 4: Blackie, that's a smart idea. And simple.
- 20:46Speaker 3: So simple I was scared some other guy would beat
- 20:48Speaker 3: me to it. That ripple is moving this way.
- 20:50Speaker 4: What are you going to do now, Blackie?
- 20:53Speaker 3: I'm going out to meet him just as soon as
- 20:55Speaker 3: he gets far enough in for me to fetch on
- 20:57Speaker 3: the water. Then I'm gonna grab him and strangle him
- 21:01Speaker 3: with these two hands.
- 21:02Speaker 7: He ought to be a cinch for a guy as
- 21:04Speaker 7: strong as you at any time. But now after he
- 21:06Speaker 7: swam that distance, he's.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Ducked, sir. It's time to go, Frankie.
- 21:09Speaker 7: Here.
- 21:11Speaker 4: Grab my dirt, sir. Take this. Okay, Blackie. You better
- 21:14Speaker 4: make it snappy. He's almost out of deep water. He's
- 21:17Speaker 4: paddling in his own grave right now. Here goes. Keep
- 21:22Speaker 4: your eye on the water, Frankie. And watch the fun. Okay, Blackie.
- 21:28Speaker 2: I doze on you. Don't disappoint me.
- 21:40Speaker 4: I got you, Shadow.
- 21:41Speaker 3: I can't see you, but I can feel my hands
- 21:42Speaker 3: on your throat.
- 21:44Speaker 4: Let go of me.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Let go of me. No, I won't. I waited too
- 21:49Speaker 3: many years to get my hands on you.
- 21:51Speaker 4: Who are you?
- 21:52Speaker 3: I can't see you, but I know you can see me.
- 21:55Speaker 3: So take a good look. Do you recognize me? Blackie Carmichael.
- 22:00Speaker 3: That's right. Blackie Carmichael. The guy you sent to prison
- 22:04Speaker 3: for five years. You deserve what you.
- 22:06Speaker 4: Got, Blackie. A lot more.
- 22:09Speaker 3: Now let me go. Sure, I'll let go of you
- 22:12Speaker 3: after I strangle the life out of you.
- 22:19Speaker 4: You're joking, but... You're finished, Shadow. This is the end
- 22:22Speaker 4: of it.
- 22:23Speaker 3: Now I'm going to hold your head underwater and drown you.
- 22:28Speaker 3: That's done. Frank! Frank! I've done it!
- 22:31Speaker 2: I killed him! I killed.
- 22:38Speaker 4: The shadow!
- 22:41Speaker 3: Frank!
- 22:56Speaker 4: Hmm? Oh, confounded, who can that be at this hour
- 23:02Speaker 4: of the night? Hello?
- 23:05Speaker 10: Is this Commissioner Weston?
- 23:06Speaker 4: Yes, who's this?
- 23:07Speaker 10: There's no time for introductions, Commissioner. I've got some information
- 23:11Speaker 10: I must give you in a hurry. Let all the
- 23:13Speaker 10: men you can spare go out and surround the island
- 23:15Speaker 10: in White Lake.
- 23:16Speaker 4: The island in White Lake? Well, that place has been
- 23:19Speaker 4: deserted for years. What's out there?
- 23:21Speaker 10: I can't give you details, Commissioner, but I urge you
- 23:24Speaker 10: to act at once and use extreme care... There may.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Be great danger.
- 23:28Speaker 5: I can't be going out in the middle of the
- 23:29Speaker 5: night on crazy calls like this. You've got to give
- 23:32Speaker 5: me some definite information.
- 23:33Speaker 10: All right, Commissioner. You want to stop this epidemic of
- 23:36Speaker 10: murders and robberies, don't you?
- 23:37Speaker 4: Of course, but what has that island got to do
- 23:39Speaker 4: with it?
- 23:39Speaker 10: That you'll find out when you get there.
- 23:41Speaker 4: Hello? Hello? Hello?
- 23:45Speaker 6: Hey, Blackie.
- 23:54Speaker 7: You'll be the biggest guy in the rackets after this.
- 23:57Speaker 7: You've done something that every guy in the underworld wanted
- 23:59Speaker 7: to do. You killed his shadow.
- 24:01Speaker 4: Cut the gab and let's get going. All right, I'm
- 24:03Speaker 4: all set.
- 24:04Speaker 3: We'd better bind this shack down. We don't want to
- 24:06Speaker 3: leave any fingerprints, any evidence from the cops.
- 24:08Speaker 7: No use taking any chances now.
- 24:10Speaker 4: Get that can of kerosene. Right, Blackie.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Okay, I got it.
- 24:15Speaker 4: All right, pour it all over the joint.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Boy, wait till the gang hears about this.
- 24:23Speaker 4: It'll knock them all for a twister. Okay, that's enough.
- 24:29Speaker 4: Get over here by the door. Okay. Now check some
- 24:34Speaker 4: matches on it and let it go. Right, Blackie. This'll
- 24:39Speaker 4: cover us completely. Well, there she goes.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Come on, scram out of here. This shack will go
- 24:47Speaker 3: up like paper.
- 24:49Speaker 4: Boy, look at it burn, huh?
- 24:51Speaker 3: Never mind that. Load the two machine guns in the boat.
- 24:53Speaker 4: They're in already.
- 24:54Speaker 3: All right, then. Come on. I thought we'd never get
- 24:57Speaker 3: off this island.
- 24:59Speaker 4: It's worse than doing a stretch in jail.
- 25:00Speaker 7: What are you going to do when you get back
- 25:02Speaker 7: to town, Blackie?
- 25:03Speaker 3: I've been getting chicken feed so far. But now I'm
- 25:06Speaker 3: going out after the real big dough. I ain't going
- 25:09Speaker 3: to be too particular about how I get it.
- 25:11Speaker 4: Okay, here we are. All right, now get a hold.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Of the other end of the boat and we'll slide
- 25:16Speaker 2: her into the water.
- 25:17Speaker 4: Okay. There we go. Hey, Blackie. Wait. What's the matter?
- 25:25Speaker 2: Look.
- 25:27Speaker 4: There's a boat out there.
- 25:28Speaker 3: What?
- 25:29Speaker 4: Hey, there's another one. There's two more over there. We're surrounded, Blackie.
- 25:35Speaker 4: Let's be the cops.
- 25:36Speaker 3: What are we going to do?
- 25:37Speaker 4: Give me a hand with this machine gun. Aren't you
- 25:39Speaker 4: going to make a break for it?
- 25:40Speaker 3: Yeah, after I knock off enough cops and open up
- 25:42Speaker 3: a big enough space for us to get through.
- 25:46Speaker 4: Set that gun up here.
- 25:47Speaker 3: Leave the other one in the boat.
- 25:48Speaker 4: We'll need it going across. We better make a break
- 25:50Speaker 4: for it, Blackie. That fire's getting awful hot.
- 25:53Speaker 3: Do as I tell you and shut up.
- 25:54Speaker 4: All right, all right. Yeah, it's the cops, all right.
- 25:57Speaker 4: I can see them now in the light from the fire.
- 26:00Speaker 3: You got the gun loaded?
- 26:01Speaker 4: Yeah, she's all set. All right.
- 26:03Speaker 3: I'll get a bead on one of them two boats
- 26:05Speaker 3: right in front. Take the one to your right first.
- 26:07Speaker 4: Let go when I tell you. Then we'll knock off
- 26:10Speaker 4: the other one. All right. They're a perfect target now.
- 26:14Speaker 4: Let them get closer. Let's go, Blackie.
- 26:16Speaker 3: They'll be on top of us in another minute.
- 26:18Speaker 4: You let go and I tell you that before.
- 26:20Speaker 3: All right. Get ready.
- 26:24Speaker 4: Hey, you sap, you knocked the gun over.
- 26:26Speaker 3: I didn't knock it over. What are you trying to
- 26:28Speaker 3: hand me? Honest, Blackie, I didn't. I tell you, I.
- 26:30Speaker 4: Who else could.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Have done it? I don't know.
- 26:35Speaker 4: I could, Blackie. I did.
- 26:36Speaker 11: What?
- 26:37Speaker 4: Hey, Blackie, who's that? Who's talking? The Shadow. Blackie, you
- 26:43Speaker 4: hear that?
- 26:44Speaker 3: It's the Shadow. I thought you killed that guy.
- 26:47Speaker 4: I did. I'm sure I did. Oh, no, you didn't, Blackie.
- 26:50Speaker 4: I'm very much alive.
- 26:51Speaker 7: No, you can't be.
- 26:52Speaker 3: I held you under. I felt you go down.
- 26:54Speaker 8: I simply played good water polo, Blackie. Taking punishment underwater
- 26:58Speaker 8: and holding the breath for sustained periods.
- 27:01Speaker 4: Is a requirement of the game. I let you believe
- 27:04Speaker 4: you had an easy victim. You know better now.
- 27:08Speaker 3: Come on, run for it, Blackie. Into the water where
- 27:11Speaker 3: you still got a chance.
- 27:12Speaker 5: Right back here, you yellow rat.
- 27:13Speaker 3: Stand and fight it out.
- 27:18Speaker 8: Your little playmate is gone, Blackie. The police have shot him.
- 27:22Speaker 8: There's no chance for you to escape.
- 27:24Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what you think. You ain't railroading me that easy.
- 27:27Speaker 4: You better give up, Blackie.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Well, I guess this round's yours, but the game ain't
- 27:32Speaker 3: over yet. Put out your hands, you!
- 27:34Speaker 5: Okay, okay, take it easy, officer. Tell your men to
- 27:37Speaker 5: put away them capists. What are you doing here? He's
- 27:40Speaker 5: Blackie Carmichael, Commissioner.
- 27:41Speaker 4: Oh, Shadow, you're here too. This is the man you've
- 27:44Speaker 4: been looking for, Commissioner. The killer of the gas station
- 27:46Speaker 4: man and the others. Well, he's a prize package. Nice
- 27:50Speaker 4: piece of work, Shadow.
- 27:52Speaker 3: Come on, you. All right, all right, you got me now.
- 27:54Speaker 3: But I'll get out again just as I did before.
- 27:57Speaker 3: And the next time, Shadow... I'm gonna get you. Remember that,
- 28:02Speaker 3: I'm gonna get you. Hey, Joe.
- 28:13Speaker 4: Yes, Mr.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Ward.
- 28:15Speaker 5: Get Blackie Carmichael's record card out of the big file.
- 28:18Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 28:25Speaker 5: Yes, here we are, Carmichael.
- 28:27Speaker 4: Albert Carmichael, alias Blackie. Here you are, Mr. Warden. All right.
- 28:31Speaker 4: Stamp it and put it in the small file. Yes, sir.
- 28:35Speaker 4: There you are, sir.
- 28:36Speaker 5: Just a minute. Let me look at it. That's right, Joe.
- 28:41Speaker 5: Albert Blackie Carmichael. Discharged by execution.
- 28:47Speaker 6: The End.
- 29:01Speaker 5: And now here's Blue Coal's heating expert, Mr. John Barclay,
- 29:05Speaker 5: with a timely hint on furnace care and attention that's
- 29:08Speaker 5: bound to save many of you money.
- 29:10Speaker 11: Thank you, Ken Roberts, and good afternoon, friends. I imagine
- 29:14Speaker 11: that many of you homeowners think you can save money
- 29:17Speaker 11: by putting as little coal on the furnace fire as possible.
- 29:21Speaker 11: But as a matter of fact, a thin firebed is
- 29:23Speaker 11: one of the surest ways to waste fuel I know of.
- 29:27Speaker 11: A flimsy fire burns coal quickly and has a tendency
- 29:30Speaker 11: to go out easily. which makes repeated refuelings necessary. The
- 29:36Speaker 11: really economical way is to keep a deep fire bed
- 29:40Speaker 11: level with the fire door.
- 29:42Speaker 4: When spring weather comes, leave a heavier.
- 29:46Speaker 11: Layer of ashes on the grates. This will keep the
- 29:49Speaker 11: fire burning slowly. At the same time, will keep enough
- 29:52Speaker 11: coal burning to provide plenty of heat if the outside
- 29:56Speaker 11: temperature should take a sudden drop. And let me repeat,
- 30:01Speaker 11: if you have any heating problem or any difficulty of
- 30:04Speaker 11: any sort with your furnace, call your nearest blue coal dealer.
- 30:09Speaker 11: Ask him to send a John Barclay heating service man
- 30:12Speaker 11: to inspect your furnace. These John Barclay men are trained
- 30:17Speaker 11: and fully qualified to show you how any trouble can
- 30:20Speaker 11: be corrected. And this service is absolutely free with no
- 30:25Speaker 11: obligation of any sort on your part.
- 30:28Speaker 6: I thank you.
