- 1:35Speaker 3: Don't wait, don't hesitate that over.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Now, that's an acting trick with your eyes.
- 1:39Speaker 3: So okay.
- 1:39Speaker 7: So one of the things I learned from Kelsey Grammar
- 1:43Speaker 7: always always as a way you can look at a
- 1:45Speaker 7: camera where it's you're talk you're talking to the people,
- 1:48Speaker 7: but you're also.
- 1:49Speaker 3: I'm look, I'm looking at the camera as you're doing this.
- 1:51Speaker 7: So like camera left, you're looking kind of at it,
- 1:54Speaker 7: but you're not looking at it. But they feel it
- 1:56Speaker 7: feel like you're about to break that fourth wall a
- 1:58Speaker 7: little Oh shit, that's good, Keep going, keep good, keep going,
- 2:03Speaker 7: and you feel like so then then you start doing
- 2:05Speaker 7: things that like.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Is it mischievous? Yeah? Are you angry? Yeah? Do you
- 2:12Speaker 3: feel sexy? Yeah? I was my guy.
- 2:16Speaker 8: Yeah, all right, guys, welcome back e y l.
- 2:27Speaker 6: We're back home for a short period of time. Yeah,
- 2:31Speaker 6: this is gonna be a dope episode. Man, shout out
- 2:33Speaker 6: to my guy Punch first and foremost. Yeah, ran into
- 2:37Speaker 6: him at the airport in l A.
- 2:39Speaker 3: What were we out there for? It might have been Grammymy,
- 2:42Speaker 3: definitely Grammy for sure. I see what you did there.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Well I'm getting to that.
- 2:50Speaker 6: So yeah, so we was out there connected and then
- 2:53Speaker 6: a couple of weeks later he was like, Yo, I'm
- 2:56Speaker 6: managing role to me now and I want to get
- 2:58Speaker 6: him on the platform. So it was like, yeah, let's
- 3:00Speaker 6: do it. Let's let's set it up. I was a
- 3:02Speaker 6: big fan of Power, so.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Thank you, we all are. Let's just say, let's this
- 3:08Speaker 3: is not just like a youth.
- 3:10Speaker 4: I wasn't a big fan of your character.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I wasn't there. I wasn't. I appreciate you. He
- 3:16Speaker 3: was necessary. It was necessary. It was very necessary because
- 3:20Speaker 3: it reminded us like what those used to be.
- 3:23Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, you know, towards the second third season, we
- 3:27Speaker 5: saw that he was a lover, but he had a
- 3:29Speaker 5: little sweet in him.
- 3:31Speaker 3: And you were like, nah, this is what you used
- 3:33Speaker 3: to be bro.
- 3:36Speaker 4: So wrote to me. Interesting story.
- 3:38Speaker 6: I know a lot of people know you from power,
- 3:41Speaker 6: but you're an artist, singer, entrepreneur, relationship goals for the
- 3:48Speaker 6: whole contest Africa.
- 3:50Speaker 4: We'll talk about that father.
- 3:54Speaker 6: Nigerian, Yes, sir, That's why I wore my knights, say see.
- 4:02Speaker 4: By Nigerians, not your family.
- 4:05Speaker 6: So yeah, so I feel like we were allowed to
- 4:07Speaker 6: talk about first and foremost, thank you for joinings.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Appreciate you for having me. Did he leave athlete out?
- 4:12Speaker 3: Yeah he did, athlete, Thank you, thank you, thank you.
- 4:16Speaker 6: So all right, so how does it start? Because I
- 4:18Speaker 6: know used to do music. You're doing music now, so
- 4:23Speaker 6: it's come through sixty but you were music and I
- 4:25Speaker 6: believe he was in a group.
- 4:26Speaker 3: With jay Z's not you. Yeah yeah, yeah, So.
- 4:29Speaker 4: How did this all start from the music side?
- 4:30Speaker 7: So a lot of people don't know that musically, I've
- 4:33Speaker 7: been singing since I was four years old and my
- 4:35Speaker 7: mom had me.
- 4:36Speaker 3: My mom had me as a Nigerian wedding singer.
- 4:39Speaker 7: So I was singing at weddings from Connecticut to Philly
- 4:43Speaker 7: to Delaware, Jersey, all of that.
- 4:44Speaker 3: For like five six years at.
- 4:47Speaker 4: What age from four to nine weddings at four years.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Old, Nigerian weddings, Like what's the difference? So like Nigerian
- 4:54Speaker 3: like for Nigerian Nagerian wedding.
- 4:57Speaker 7: So I would be like the when the when, the when,
- 4:59Speaker 7: the just walking down, or I'll be singing gospel songs
- 5:03Speaker 7: or like just start the party. So I was doing
- 5:05Speaker 7: that from four to nine, and then in high school,
- 5:08Speaker 7: so that's when I started realizing, like, y'all, I really want.
- 5:10Speaker 3: To do music, like I love art, I love this.
- 5:12Speaker 7: And so in high school with jay Z's nephews, So
- 5:16Speaker 7: my junior year, his nephews moved into town and so
- 5:21Speaker 7: they created a group called NBAH and they needed a singer.
- 5:24Speaker 7: What was it called NBHB NBA natural Born Hustlers. So
- 5:30Speaker 7: we started that, but we was winning talent shows and
- 5:32Speaker 7: doing all types of things. And the whole call one
- 5:34Speaker 7: time was like listen, if y'all really want to do this,
- 5:36Speaker 7: come to New York. I need y'all here here in
- 5:39Speaker 7: my penthouse every other week, player songs, performing songs for me.
- 5:44Speaker 7: So we're going every Saturday that holds crib and performing
- 5:48Speaker 7: in his living room like it's what we wrote for
- 5:49Speaker 7: the week. And he's like Okay, that's trash.
- 5:53Speaker 3: That's amazing. Keep doing that. I love your voice.
- 5:56Speaker 7: So again, like, so he's sixteen, seventeen years old and
- 5:59Speaker 7: you're singing somebody who's arguably the greatest rappers say, yo,
- 6:02Speaker 7: you have real talent.
- 6:04Speaker 3: And that was just the motivating thing for my life.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Actually I really started like okay, I could really do this.
- 6:08Speaker 3: How consistently? Is it like every week y'are do making
- 6:12Speaker 3: new songs? Yeah? Yeah.
- 6:14Speaker 7: So we were doing talent shows, we were doing a
- 6:16Speaker 7: community college to YMCA shows. We were doing all that,
- 6:19Speaker 7: and then during the week after school, I played balls.
- 6:22Speaker 7: So after practice I'd go and we would just write songs,
- 6:25Speaker 7: record them, and then bring into whole crib man. I
- 6:28Speaker 7: literally just you know, see what worked and see what
- 6:31Speaker 7: didn't work, and you know, you're just sharpening your performance
- 6:33Speaker 7: and all of that.
- 6:34Speaker 6: So you're singing in high school, but you go to
- 6:39Speaker 6: college for communications, right, Yeah, and that was in Illinois.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Yes, Northwestern. I went to Northwest Nothwestern.
- 6:46Speaker 6: So at that point, did you like just give up
- 6:49Speaker 6: on a dream of being an artist or did you
- 6:52Speaker 6: say okay, we put this on pause for a minute,
- 6:54Speaker 6: or did you continue to be an artist while in college.
- 6:57Speaker 7: So I went to school originally for voice performance, so
- 7:01Speaker 7: I got in for voice performance.
- 7:03Speaker 3: As Northwestern.
- 7:04Speaker 7: I got in and I was realizing, like, damn, I'm
- 7:06Speaker 7: doing all these classes and getting half credits, and I'm
- 7:09Speaker 7: learning music theory and all these things that I personally
- 7:11Speaker 7: wouldn't use for my artists work, like my dreams of
- 7:15Speaker 7: being artists. So let me actually put my college experience
- 7:18Speaker 7: to you. Let me go to communications and I did
- 7:21Speaker 7: a minor in business, so let me start running how
- 7:23Speaker 7: to run a label, how to figure out what I
- 7:26Speaker 7: want to do, how do I handle my money, how
- 7:28Speaker 7: do I understand investments? So I started doing that early,
- 7:31Speaker 7: but now it was always music. It was always music.
- 7:33Speaker 7: So we would actually sneak into the music department studio
- 7:37Speaker 7: at night. So I got cool with the janitor, so
- 7:41Speaker 7: we record all our records at night, so just to
- 7:45Speaker 7: and sell the mixtapes during lunchtime during school in college.
- 7:50Speaker 4: So you had a buzz in college as a music
- 7:52Speaker 4: I had a buzz in.
- 7:53Speaker 5: College as a music. We skipped over something and we
- 7:55Speaker 5: shouldn't breaze over it. Northwestern is not the easies school
- 7:58Speaker 5: to get in. All this is like top level, one
- 8:00Speaker 5: of the best communicating schools in the country, not definitely
- 8:03Speaker 5: in the world. So I'm sure, like silastically, you must
- 8:07Speaker 5: have been super intelligent to even get in there. But
- 8:10Speaker 5: from your parents' side, yeah, I'm sure they're not thinking like, yeah,
- 8:15Speaker 5: what set in him there to find out where he
- 8:17Speaker 5: can be in music?
- 8:18Speaker 3: No? No, what are their thoughts about what they want
- 8:21Speaker 3: you to do?
- 8:22Speaker 7: Roalt to me, you have to be a doctor, a lawyer,
- 8:25Speaker 7: an engineer, a dentist. Forget the music now, anybody can.
- 8:30Speaker 7: I don't even want to hear your music grow to me,
- 8:32Speaker 7: I don't want to hear your.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Songs, you know what I mean. So for me, it
- 8:35Speaker 3: was like I'm competitive.
- 8:37Speaker 7: So my dad put that bug in my back, like listen,
- 8:40Speaker 7: get your degree, focus on this. If you want to
- 8:43Speaker 7: make music cool, but for get this this will change
- 8:46Speaker 7: your life and save you and just learn, learn as
- 8:48Speaker 7: much as you can. So my deal with him was
- 8:51Speaker 7: if you graduate, he'll pay for the first year out
- 8:53Speaker 7: of college and pay my rent and everything, so I
- 8:56Speaker 7: can focus on music.
- 8:57Speaker 3: So that was the deal, you know what I mean.
- 8:59Speaker 7: So again out to just having amazing parents that believe
- 9:02Speaker 7: in and do that for you. But yeah, I had
- 9:04Speaker 7: to add to ad to really really work and compartmentalize
- 9:07Speaker 7: my time. Man, because again making the record, selling the
- 9:11Speaker 7: record in school, doing work and then going to uh
- 9:15Speaker 7: Chicago in the city and like doing all types of
- 9:18Speaker 7: open mics and just build the name in the city.
- 9:20Speaker 3: So it's always compartmentalizing and.
- 9:22Speaker 7: Learning how to just balance my time and try to
- 9:25Speaker 7: make money while I was doing it.
- 9:26Speaker 3: What did your parents do like for a living?
- 9:28Speaker 7: Oh, so my mom was in public health and my
- 9:30Speaker 7: dad was an investment banker.
- 9:32Speaker 4: Banker in New York.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah. OK.
- 9:35Speaker 4: So he didn't want you to go into finances.
- 9:39Speaker 7: Now, he didn't push forward. He just made sure that
- 9:41Speaker 7: I understood like how to handle my money.
- 9:43Speaker 3: He's still no, no, he's retired. Yeah.
- 9:46Speaker 6: So you so the financial literacy and business that was
- 9:49Speaker 6: something that.
- 9:49Speaker 3: You was introduced to at a young age, very young age.
- 9:52Speaker 7: So my dad basically would have me come to work
- 9:54Speaker 7: with him and just see and just learn how to
- 9:56Speaker 7: understand taxes, understand saving, understand stuff.
- 10:00Speaker 3: So like the first money I did. So basically a
- 10:02Speaker 3: lot of people don't know.
- 10:03Speaker 7: So with my father, he made it to the point
- 10:07Speaker 7: where if you're really that guy ro to me, if
- 10:10Speaker 7: you're really who you believe you are. Make sure saved
- 10:13Speaker 7: all your money. Do not spend your power money. So
- 10:16Speaker 7: for six years I never touched my power money. I
- 10:19Speaker 7: mean I used I lived off of my shows, my hostings,
- 10:22Speaker 7: and my endorsement deals. So for six years I just
- 10:24Speaker 7: saved all of that. And the first purchase I did
- 10:27Speaker 7: was by real estate. So knowing that that was something
- 10:31Speaker 7: that my dad taught me while I was in high school,
- 10:34Speaker 7: like saved, make sure you have a line of a
- 10:37Speaker 7: line of work and then find different streams to make money.
- 10:40Speaker 3: So that's what I started doing. That's crazy. So we're back.
- 10:43Speaker 5: I want to go back to Northwestern because you're selling
- 10:45Speaker 5: the tapes and making some money. But what is your
- 10:49Speaker 5: sound like? You're still trying to figure out your sound.
- 10:50Speaker 5: I'm assuming, so like who's influencing you? And at that time,
- 10:53Speaker 5: what is it? Is it R and B?
- 10:55Speaker 3: Is it? Like?
- 10:56Speaker 7: Who's influencing sound that you're making at the sound? So
- 10:58Speaker 7: at that time, man, I was one of those that
- 11:01Speaker 7: didn't really know. I just knew I could sing really well,
- 11:04Speaker 7: so I didn't really have a style. It was more
- 11:06Speaker 7: so trying to emulate everybody. And so okay, Chris Ben
- 11:10Speaker 7: had a record this person had a record. This person,
- 11:11Speaker 7: So I'm doing records and they're not really connecting because
- 11:14Speaker 7: it wasn't me. So every artist goes to that point.
- 11:18Speaker 7: Every artist needs to realize that focus on finding your
- 11:23Speaker 7: sound and who you are. And then now that's when
- 11:25Speaker 7: everything took off for me. So when I realized, Okay,
- 11:28Speaker 7: I'm African American. Okay, I'm the epitome of really African American.
- 11:34Speaker 7: Let me lean into R and B, let me lead
- 11:36Speaker 7: into afrobeat, let me lead into you know, pop, whatever
- 11:40Speaker 7: it was that made my sound. So my mom had
- 11:43Speaker 7: me listening to country music, early R and B, jazz,
- 11:47Speaker 7: all of that. Paul Simon fell out, KUNTI like all
- 11:50Speaker 7: of that. So it was a melting pot. So when
- 11:52Speaker 7: I realized, you know what, let me just be myself, man,
- 11:54Speaker 7: that's when everything happened. But during that time, I was
- 11:56Speaker 7: just I just a dude that could sing and perform.
- 12:00Speaker 6: So, all right, you graduate college, yes, right, major in communication. Yeah,
- 12:07Speaker 6: your dad made you the promise that if you graduate college,
- 12:10Speaker 6: he's going to take care of your first year of
- 12:11Speaker 6: living as an adult.
- 12:12Speaker 4: Yes, Now when do you actually get into acting?
- 12:17Speaker 3: Oh?
- 12:17Speaker 7: Okay, all right, so graduate school struggling artists. All my
- 12:23Speaker 7: friends are getting jobs with these big companies. So I'm like, damn, man,
- 12:26Speaker 7: what's going on? Dad, I do the right thing. You
- 12:28Speaker 7: started losing hope, right. So my manager at the time,
- 12:31Speaker 7: he was like, Roll, you're always really really good in
- 12:34Speaker 7: front of a camera, really good at performing, like, you're
- 12:37Speaker 7: really good with music videos. Try acting, Maybe go get
- 12:40Speaker 7: a commercial to something. So in Chicago, I'm not cool whatever,
- 12:44Speaker 7: let me just try it. So no agency wanted to
- 12:46Speaker 7: take me in because I had no resume. Only agency
- 12:49Speaker 7: that took me in was because her son went to
- 12:53Speaker 7: my school, so she was taking care of alumni.
- 12:56Speaker 3: So she was like, just try you know, I come on,
- 12:58Speaker 3: just try it. I go.
- 13:00Speaker 7: When audition for her, she's like, oh, she's you're kind
- 13:04Speaker 7: of good. Okay, She's like, you know what, I have
- 13:07Speaker 7: an audition in two days. It's called for a TV
- 13:09Speaker 7: show called Boss. You're not gonna get it because the
- 13:13Speaker 7: roller is already cast. You're not gonna get it. Just
- 13:15Speaker 7: want you to get used to being in front of
- 13:18Speaker 7: a casting director, being in front of an auditioning.
- 13:22Speaker 3: So I'm like, all right, cool whatever.
- 13:24Speaker 7: At the time, I didn't know I had a photographic memory,
- 13:26Speaker 7: so I can read and understand and digest things really fat.
- 13:29Speaker 3: I didn't know that I thought this. Everybody could do that.
- 13:32Speaker 3: So go in.
- 13:34Speaker 7: I'm not thinking anything. And this is how crazy I
- 13:36Speaker 7: was with the music. So I don't know, do you
- 13:37Speaker 7: remember when you could write your website on your on
- 13:40Speaker 7: the wristbands. So I'm going into audition like a yeah,
- 13:43Speaker 7: wrote to me music dot com. Cool, like, not even
- 13:47Speaker 7: thinking about being an actor. So I get on and
- 13:51Speaker 7: Kelsey Grammar happens to be in the audition, and so
- 13:55Speaker 7: I'm like, okay, cool, I'm not really thinking I'm this whatever,
- 13:58Speaker 7: I'm not gonna get it.
- 13:59Speaker 3: I do it.
- 14:00Speaker 7: And I didn't realize that she's saying try it this way,
- 14:03Speaker 7: do it this way, do it this way.
- 14:04Speaker 3: I didn't realize I'd done it like ten different ways.
- 14:08Speaker 3: They called.
- 14:08Speaker 7: They call me and like you got it, and I'm
- 14:11Speaker 7: like how, like got what? It's like, okay, you're you're
- 14:16Speaker 7: they're going to send an offer. You're going to be
- 14:18Speaker 7: on the show. So I booked my first audition not
- 14:22Speaker 7: really knowing what I'm signing up for. So the best
- 14:25Speaker 7: thing that happened to me, man, was Kelsey Grammer took
- 14:27Speaker 7: me in, you know, and he said, you'll come an
- 14:29Speaker 7: hour early study with me, let me explain how this works.
- 14:33Speaker 3: And da da da da dah.
- 14:34Speaker 7: So my first real acting class was episode one of Boss.
- 14:38Speaker 3: That's crazy.
- 14:39Speaker 5: There's a lot there and those were I know there's
- 14:41Speaker 5: some younger audience that like Kelsey Gramma, this is like
- 14:44Speaker 5: one of the highest paid actors on TV. Started at Cheers,
- 14:48Speaker 5: didn't have phrase is hugely successful syndicated but even bigger,
- 14:52Speaker 5: and a lot of people think you got to go
- 14:53Speaker 5: to school because of the degree you can get, but
- 14:56Speaker 5: it speaks to going to school to be part of
- 14:58Speaker 5: a network that alumni got you this this audition, but
- 15:03Speaker 5: being with Kelsey introduced you to a network named Stars, Yes,
- 15:07Speaker 5: which nobody was really watching.
- 15:09Speaker 7: Absolutely at the time. Absolutely, And you know for me
- 15:12Speaker 7: what you just said, bro, I feel like college sometimes
- 15:15Speaker 7: most of the times is not really about the classes
- 15:19Speaker 7: you take, but more about like the hands you shake,
- 15:22Speaker 7: you know what I mean?
- 15:22Speaker 3: And for me, I understood that.
- 15:24Speaker 7: And again that was a lifeline for me because I
- 15:27Speaker 7: don't know if she didn't realize and say, hey, what
- 15:30Speaker 7: school would you go to? If she didn't do that,
- 15:32Speaker 7: I don't know if I would have been an actor.
- 15:34Speaker 7: You know what I'm saying. So she was a lifeline
- 15:36Speaker 7: to my you know, my career in a way. But yeah, Kelsey,
- 15:39Speaker 7: Grandma took me in man and and really really taught
- 15:43Speaker 7: me about even even so like what I should do
- 15:46Speaker 7: and how I should even spend my first check because
- 15:49Speaker 7: the first six figures out of college at twenty one,
- 15:52Speaker 7: you don't really know what to do. So just the
- 15:55Speaker 7: advice from him on just how to just you know,
- 15:57Speaker 7: start an LLC. Don't put this under your name, you know,
- 16:00Speaker 7: so they don't take your tax they havelf the your taxes.
- 16:02Speaker 3: That's crazy, you know.
- 16:03Speaker 7: So like I'm like, okay, cool, so you start your company.
- 16:07Speaker 7: Front row seat production started now, so that this is
- 16:10Speaker 7: so just explaining that. So everything was so fast paced
- 16:13Speaker 7: and happening so fast at that time.
- 16:15Speaker 3: A friend of the show was also on the cast.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, oh yeah.
- 16:22Speaker 6: So let's talk about this then, all right, the first
- 16:24Speaker 6: time you got a check, you got a six figure check,
- 16:28Speaker 6: just out. So you have your dad, who's a she's
- 16:32Speaker 6: he's well versed in finances. You know, I'm sure he's
- 16:34Speaker 6: giving you advice on it, tool, yes, but then Kelsey
- 16:36Speaker 6: Graham is giving you advice. So Yeah, let's kind of
- 16:38Speaker 6: break that down. Like, so you said you started the LLC. Yeah,
- 16:41Speaker 6: started the check was made out to your LLC as
- 16:45Speaker 6: opposed to you personally. Yes, so you can take deductions, yes,
- 16:49Speaker 6: and different things of that nature.
- 16:51Speaker 7: Because if I kept the under my name, as soon
- 16:54Speaker 7: as I get the check, it's already taxes personal income.
- 16:57Speaker 7: So having that a part of it, it was like damn.
- 17:00Speaker 7: Like and one of my guys who was on the
- 17:02Speaker 7: show that he didn't know that. So he's getting like
- 17:04Speaker 7: twenty thousand an episode, but he's getting eleven, you know.
- 17:07Speaker 7: So he's like he thought they were robbing him. I'm like, no, bro,
- 17:10Speaker 7: now it doesn't work like that. It's more so just
- 17:13Speaker 7: you know, put it under your company's name. You collect everything,
- 17:17Speaker 7: and then you can figure out how to write things
- 17:18Speaker 7: off and figure out the taxes on that. So he
- 17:21Speaker 7: explained that to me perfectly, and that was the first
- 17:23Speaker 7: thing I did and saved me a lot of money
- 17:24Speaker 7: and I was able to put a lot of things
- 17:26Speaker 7: under my business.
- 17:28Speaker 4: So when do you start working with at Power?
- 17:32Speaker 7: Power was twenty and fourteen, so this was twenty twelve
- 17:35Speaker 7: what I'm talking about.
- 17:35Speaker 4: So a few years, how does the power story. How's that?
- 17:39Speaker 3: How's that for power? Oh, let's go in between that time?
- 17:41Speaker 5: Right, because the show doesn't last as long, which now
- 17:45Speaker 5: means that.
- 17:45Speaker 3: You you're in between gigs.
- 17:48Speaker 5: Right, So that money that you had to now your
- 17:50Speaker 5: dad telling you save safe safe, Yes, what's the in
- 17:54Speaker 5: between time?
- 17:54Speaker 3: Like?
- 17:54Speaker 5: Because there's plenty of actors who don't get gigs, they
- 17:56Speaker 5: don't get a power after they start on the show.
- 17:58Speaker 7: So a lot of people don't stand man being an actor.
- 18:01Speaker 7: You know, it's you have to have financial literacy because
- 18:05Speaker 7: if you don't, you don't know when your next job's
- 18:08Speaker 7: gonna come. You don't know what auditions gonna hit, You
- 18:09Speaker 7: don't know anything. So you have to be a masterful saver,
- 18:13Speaker 7: you know what I mean. So for me, after that
- 18:15Speaker 7: show again, I've never auditioned. I didn't know anything about
- 18:19Speaker 7: anything else but Boss because I was on that for
- 18:21Speaker 7: two seasons. So my dad and I talked and he said, listen,
- 18:25Speaker 7: like the money that you've made, we're gonna put that
- 18:29Speaker 7: away and only work off of twenty five thousand for
- 18:34Speaker 7: the next eight months. Let's figure that out. If you're
- 18:37Speaker 7: really him, you'll make twenty five thousand work everything else
- 18:41Speaker 7: you're gonna thank me later.
- 18:42Speaker 3: We don't need to use this.
- 18:43Speaker 4: That was for boss.
- 18:44Speaker 3: This is for boss money.
- 18:45Speaker 4: So how much money was that that you put away?
- 18:47Speaker 7: So I put away about two seasons, about twenty five.
- 18:52Speaker 6: So you put a quarter million away quarter twenty five
- 18:54Speaker 6: thousand for eight months, so.
- 18:56Speaker 7: Quarter million away, and then half of that I put
- 18:58Speaker 7: it into like really say stocks, so like Starbucks, Google, Face, Facebook, YouTube,
- 19:07Speaker 7: like all those things. So I did all of that
- 19:09Speaker 7: to just keep it afloat, you know. And then my
- 19:13Speaker 7: dad was like, no work off of twenty five thousand,
- 19:15Speaker 7: so I had to kind of find a spot. So
- 19:18Speaker 7: I was all right, let me, let me move to
- 19:20Speaker 7: Atlanta because it's cheap over here. Let me get some
- 19:23Speaker 7: roommates as my friends. But I made sure that my
- 19:25Speaker 7: roommates were also songwriters. So we built it. We built
- 19:29Speaker 7: a studio in Atlanta. Didn't really have any furniture because
- 19:33Speaker 7: I was like, listen, bro, we're gonna have computer chairs,
- 19:35Speaker 7: if we're gonna get some joints. If the girls gonna
- 19:37Speaker 7: like us, we don't like us for our personality, brother,
- 19:39Speaker 7: you know what I'm saying. So it was it was
- 19:41Speaker 7: that type of energy, and I was just figuring out
- 19:43Speaker 7: how I can make this stretch and what can I do?
- 19:47Speaker 7: Then my agent called me and he was like, listen, man,
- 19:50Speaker 7: there's a TV show called Power. And all this time
- 19:53Speaker 7: that eight months, it was just staying in the house
- 19:55Speaker 7: recording and doing features and trying to just make some
- 19:59Speaker 7: type of money, you know, and doing some hosting. So
- 20:01Speaker 7: I was able to flip it a little bit and
- 20:04Speaker 7: then to then my agent called me. He's like, yo,
- 20:07Speaker 7: there's a TV show called Power. But mindra, this is
- 20:10Speaker 7: now seven months into my savings, so I'm like a
- 20:14Speaker 7: down to about thirty five hundred three thousand at this point.
- 20:20Speaker 3: So.
- 20:22Speaker 7: Terrible slash back. Yeah, damn nah. So my my agent
- 20:28Speaker 7: calls me. He's like, listen, bro, you got to put
- 20:30Speaker 7: yourself on tape, but if you get it, you have
- 20:32Speaker 7: to fly yourself out to LA because they're gonna want
- 20:36Speaker 7: to see you in the room.
- 20:38Speaker 3: And do it.
- 20:39Speaker 7: I was like, all right, cool, I don't know what
- 20:40Speaker 7: Power is. It's fifty cent show. I was like, okay,
- 20:44Speaker 7: all right, I mean what else we got, so let's
- 20:46Speaker 7: do it. So I ended up doing put myself on tape.
- 20:49Speaker 7: They loved it. They're like, okay, you get out here
- 20:51Speaker 7: in two days. So I'm like, Dann, I said, tick,
- 20:54Speaker 7: that's a ticket. Oh shoot, okay, two days all right?
- 20:57Speaker 3: Cool?
- 20:58Speaker 7: Flight about a good seven hundred and five hundred. Okay, damn,
- 21:02Speaker 7: I'm down to twenty five hundred. Okay, cool, Bro, you're
- 21:04Speaker 7: gonna have to stay in the motel. Man, You're gonna
- 21:06Speaker 7: have to stay in the motel. So I found a
- 21:08Speaker 7: motel in East Hollywood with the road, trees, all.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Type of things. Bro. It was. I go to the
- 21:14Speaker 3: front desk.
- 21:14Speaker 7: I'm like, hey, bro, I don't know how long I'll
- 21:16Speaker 7: be here, but is there a way we could work out.
- 21:18Speaker 7: I'm a struggling artist. I don't really have that much,
- 21:20Speaker 7: can you. It was sixty a sixty at night. He
- 21:23Speaker 7: was like, I'll give it to you for thirty five,
- 21:25Speaker 7: I believe. I said, okay, thank you, bro, thank you man,
- 21:28Speaker 7: thank you. So I was able to half that. Okay,
- 21:30Speaker 7: so cool, I can stretch it half the time long? Okay, cool?
- 21:33Speaker 3: All right.
- 21:34Speaker 7: They don't even call me in until a week later,
- 21:39Speaker 7: so now I'm counting. All right, damn, it's thirty five.
- 21:43Speaker 7: Then you come down and took her on it. Thirty five. Okay,
- 21:45Speaker 7: I can eat if I do this. Hmm what girl,
- 21:49Speaker 7: I know I can get some food. Shoot, yeah yeah,
- 21:52Speaker 7: yeah okay. Surety was cool. So let me just say
- 21:54Speaker 7: oh yeah, yeah, okay cool. Let me say at her
- 21:56Speaker 7: crib like literally, bro, like, I'm trying to figure this
- 21:59Speaker 7: out because I too much. I don't want to call
- 22:01Speaker 7: my dad and ask. I'm like, no, I can do this,
- 22:03Speaker 7: you know. And again, it's my money. But I love
- 22:06Speaker 7: the challenge of it, you know. I love the challenge
- 22:08Speaker 7: of it. And I really didn't want to touch that.
- 22:09Speaker 7: I really wanted to save that and see what I
- 22:12Speaker 7: could do later with that money. So go in literally
- 22:18Speaker 7: a week later, get it. They called me, hey, ro
- 22:22Speaker 7: we love you, but we're gonna see you. Can you
- 22:24Speaker 7: wait another week and a half because we wanted you
- 22:27Speaker 7: to do it again in front of the network. Now,
- 22:29Speaker 7: So I'm there now three and a half weeks. So
- 22:31Speaker 7: now the money is just going like this, going like this,
- 22:34Speaker 7: going like this, going like this.
- 22:35Speaker 3: So now I'm I'm trying to uber. I'm trying to this.
- 22:37Speaker 7: So I'm down to about in three weeks, about twelve
- 22:41Speaker 7: hundred in terms of food, in terms of guys, in
- 22:44Speaker 7: terms of everything, about twelve hundred. So okay, to me,
- 22:49Speaker 7: what are you gonna do, man, what are you gonna do?
- 22:51Speaker 7: So then go in and it was me and Lakeith
- 22:55Speaker 7: la Keith Stanford, right, la Keith.
- 22:59Speaker 3: So it's me and him. So he's over here, I'm
- 23:01Speaker 3: over here. I'm baling for the part of Bound. Nobody
- 23:03Speaker 3: knows that. I don't really talk about that. That's crazy.
- 23:05Speaker 4: Wow.
- 23:06Speaker 7: We both were balanced for Dre and we're both in
- 23:09Speaker 7: the same position. Like he's like, bro, you know, if
- 23:11Speaker 7: I don't get this, I kind of you know, I
- 23:12Speaker 7: can still. I got another show I'm working on, which
- 23:14Speaker 7: was Atlanta.
- 23:15Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, So I'm like, dog, I don't care who
- 23:19Speaker 3: you are. I don't care what's going on. It's not yours, bro,
- 23:24Speaker 3: it's not yours.
- 23:24Speaker 7: And that was the energy I had the whole time.
- 23:26Speaker 7: It's like I need this, I need this, So I
- 23:30Speaker 7: go in embody like my life depending on I brought
- 23:34Speaker 7: props about this, I did this. I did everything because
- 23:37Speaker 7: I knew that I only had about one thousand dollars
- 23:39Speaker 7: left and go in and kill it and then move
- 23:44Speaker 7: to New York.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:45Speaker 6: And then so the original you get the role, Yeah,
- 23:49Speaker 6: you were supposed to only be like a short yeah
- 23:52Speaker 6: period of time, right yeah, yeah, And then that ended
- 23:54Speaker 6: up being seasons. So how does that work be Cuse,
- 23:58Speaker 6: like when somebody's writing a script, right, they write you
- 24:00Speaker 6: in a script and they say, okay, you're going to
- 24:02Speaker 6: be in for three episodes, and you get killed. You
- 24:05Speaker 6: impress them enough so they have to because now they
- 24:08Speaker 6: got to rewrite the whole script because I'm assuming now
- 24:13Speaker 6: that is like a domino effect, right, and when now
- 24:15Speaker 6: they have to write you in for another fourth seasons.
- 24:18Speaker 6: So now it's like now all of the other characters
- 24:21Speaker 6: have to be adjusted. Just a character might have to
- 24:23Speaker 6: be taken out. There's a lot of work involved.
- 24:25Speaker 7: So yeah, so my character was only really supposed to
- 24:28Speaker 7: be on season two and then die early season three,
- 24:32Speaker 7: and it was supposed to just be like, oh Canan's
- 24:34Speaker 7: little man that he's out of prison, he got his
- 24:36Speaker 7: little man and that was really it, and he does
- 24:39Speaker 7: some crazy stuff and he gets killed.
- 24:40Speaker 3: But again, I was on savage mode.
- 24:43Speaker 5: Bro.
- 24:43Speaker 3: I was like, listen, I need I need this, I
- 24:46Speaker 3: need this, I need this.
- 24:47Speaker 7: And so even though the first season I really didn't
- 24:50Speaker 7: have that many lines, I made sure everything I did
- 24:52Speaker 7: with my eyes was like what was that?
- 24:55Speaker 3: Is he up to something?
- 24:57Speaker 7: It was so I cast so much curiosity with the
- 25:00Speaker 7: character that they started realizing like, oh wow, like there's
- 25:04Speaker 7: something here. But if I would have played it to
- 25:06Speaker 7: with the words, it would have been like.
- 25:08Speaker 4: Talk about that is That's an acting trick with your eyes.
- 25:11Speaker 3: So okay.
- 25:12Speaker 7: So one of the things I learned from Kelsey Grammar
- 25:16Speaker 7: always always is a way you can look at a
- 25:18Speaker 7: camera where it's you're talking, you're talking to the people,
- 25:21Speaker 7: but you're also.
- 25:22Speaker 3: Look, I'm looking at the camera as you're doing this, So.
- 25:24Speaker 7: Like camera left, you're looking kind of at it, but
- 25:26Speaker 7: you're not looking at it. But they feel it, feel
- 25:29Speaker 7: like you're about to break that fourth wall of oh ship,
- 25:31Speaker 7: that's good, keep going, keep going good, keep going, and
- 25:35Speaker 7: you feel like so then then you start doing things
- 25:37Speaker 7: that like is it mischievous?
- 25:40Speaker 3: Yeah? Are you angry?
- 25:43Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 25:44Speaker 3: Do you feel sexy? Yeah? It's my guy.
- 25:53Speaker 7: So so it's a it's a trick where you're able
- 25:57Speaker 7: to one connect with the audience more. But then I
- 26:00Speaker 7: made it to where you don't know what he's actually thinking.
- 26:04Speaker 7: So I'll say something and then do something with my
- 26:06Speaker 7: eyes and make it be like should I believe that?
- 26:09Speaker 7: So that's where the creation of Dre really really started happening,
- 26:14Speaker 7: and then they brought me in. They were like, man,
- 26:17Speaker 7: you know fifty in Courtney Kemp again, we were gonna
- 26:20Speaker 7: we were gonna give it to your character, but this
- 26:24Speaker 7: might be baby ghost, this might be something here, you know.
- 26:27Speaker 5: And then it felt like that, So this is this
- 26:30Speaker 5: is interesting because you started as season two. Yeah, and
- 26:34Speaker 5: so from a contractual standpoint, so about that, like how
- 26:37Speaker 5: it goes from being just a seasonal character to now
- 26:40Speaker 5: being a regular on the show, right the negotiations around now.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Yeah, So the funny thing is, man, again, you have
- 26:46Speaker 3: to believe in yourself. So the first.
- 26:50Speaker 7: When I booked the show, my agents weren't happy with
- 26:54Speaker 7: it because I was making less money than I made
- 26:57Speaker 7: on Boss so my first season, so you're supposed to
- 27:01Speaker 7: obviously continue to grow in your and your income, but
- 27:05Speaker 7: I took a back seat because I believed in the show.
- 27:07Speaker 7: So I said, Okay, let me just sign this one
- 27:10Speaker 7: twenty year deal if I kill it.
- 27:12Speaker 3: So it's like it's like being on a.
- 27:14Speaker 7: Ten day contract kind of, you know what I mean,
- 27:16Speaker 7: Like not that extreme, but like if you kill it,
- 27:19Speaker 7: you're going to get a long term deal with the team.
- 27:22Speaker 7: So mine was a one year situation where it was
- 27:25Speaker 7: less than what I made, and it was less than
- 27:28Speaker 7: per episode. So I was making like maybe twenty five
- 27:32Speaker 7: thousand episode, you know, and so power power, So I took.
- 27:36Speaker 3: I took a hit to believe in it, but then
- 27:39Speaker 3: I killed it.
- 27:39Speaker 7: So when you kill it, that money can quadruple four
- 27:43Speaker 7: time five x, you know once you once you show
- 27:45Speaker 7: your work. So then after season two, I redid my
- 27:48Speaker 7: deal and I signed, you know, for six figures every episode,
- 27:53Speaker 7: you know.
- 27:53Speaker 3: So then but every year it'll grow, you know.
- 27:55Speaker 7: So at that point in time, by season six, you
- 27:58Speaker 7: make it aft you know, you know, amount of money,
- 28:00Speaker 7: so it just grows.
- 28:02Speaker 3: But then that's how we back ended. So I started with.
- 28:06Speaker 7: Where it starts at, you know, a sixth figure, and
- 28:08Speaker 7: then it just consistently grows as the character grows, and
- 28:11Speaker 7: by by season six it's it's pretty nice.
- 28:14Speaker 5: So what was that that first encounter with fifth because
- 28:17Speaker 5: this is his shows, his baby, Courtney Camp.
- 28:19Speaker 3: We've had a conversation with her.
- 28:20Speaker 5: Incredible, Yeah, what is that first conversation with like from
- 28:24Speaker 5: an after standpoint, but then also from a music standpoint too.
- 28:28Speaker 7: So I had a crazy encounter at first because before
- 28:31Speaker 7: I could even say anything right, and this is God
- 28:33Speaker 7: showing me your bro chill so so me. So fifth
- 28:36Speaker 7: is walking in and somebody's asking him like, yo, man,
- 28:38Speaker 7: can you check out my mixtape?
- 28:40Speaker 3: And he was like nah man. So I was like,
- 28:43Speaker 3: oh no, the office, no band for him. Yeah.
- 28:49Speaker 7: It was on the street walking before we did the scene.
- 28:51Speaker 7: That's all like just in the in the street he
- 28:53Speaker 7: was walking with watched filming. We're about to start filming Aronx.
- 28:58Speaker 7: We were everywhere, Queen Brooklyn, everywhere, but but yeah we were.
- 29:02Speaker 7: It was like literally him walking in bro and told
- 29:05Speaker 7: dudes like yo, can you can you say no and
- 29:08Speaker 7: sat down.
- 29:08Speaker 3: And say what's up? So shit, okay, all right?
- 29:14Speaker 7: But now it was it was it was all right, bro,
- 29:16Speaker 7: if you're gonna do it, he got to find out
- 29:18Speaker 7: that you did music, not by you asking for anything.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Just do your job.
- 29:22Speaker 7: Let him know that you're cool, let him know that
- 29:24Speaker 7: you're hungry about it. And for me, I over prepare
- 29:26Speaker 7: so like I don't want to mess up a line.
- 29:29Speaker 7: I don't want to mess up anything. And I think
- 29:31Speaker 7: by the time for me as an actor, like and
- 29:33Speaker 7: for any actors watching, like the preparation you do and
- 29:37Speaker 7: anything but the preparation I had for it was so
- 29:41Speaker 7: crazy that it was fun. When I got on set,
- 29:43Speaker 7: it wasn't nervous, it wasn't I was able to just
- 29:45Speaker 7: play around. So my preparation is what got me my
- 29:49Speaker 7: extension really because I was I wasn't on set trying
- 29:52Speaker 7: to just okay, cool, cool cool cool. Now I was
- 29:54Speaker 7: really like, all right, whatever you do, I'm going to
- 29:56Speaker 7: counter that. Whatever you say, I know how to play it.
- 29:59Speaker 7: So that was how comfortable I was. So I wasn't
- 30:02Speaker 7: really nervous about the work, but the music, I was like,
- 30:04Speaker 7: oh shit, now never now, let me let me, let me,
- 30:07Speaker 7: let me get hot on my own.
- 30:08Speaker 3: Bro let me get out on my own.
- 30:09Speaker 7: So that was that was and he knew he knew
- 30:12Speaker 7: I was really serious about it because you know, my
- 30:15Speaker 7: my takes were flawless, so.
- 30:16Speaker 3: That was what he appreciated. So how did he find
- 30:18Speaker 3: out about your music? All right? So crazy?
- 30:22Speaker 7: So about four or five months into filming, still never
- 30:25Speaker 7: mentioned anything to him about music, So I go, I'm
- 30:29Speaker 7: recording on the low.
- 30:30Speaker 3: So what I was doing was I was going on set,
- 30:33Speaker 3: kill it, and then go to record at night. So
- 30:35Speaker 3: it was twenty four.
- 30:36Speaker 7: Hours of just working work, and work and work and working,
- 30:38Speaker 7: and then during the weekends, I was going to different
- 30:43Speaker 7: cities for hostings. So that was where I was That's
- 30:45Speaker 7: what I was eating off of the money I was
- 30:47Speaker 7: making from shows and bookings. That was the money that
- 30:50Speaker 7: paid for everything else. So go in Fifth Outside. So
- 30:55Speaker 7: I go in and these these producers. They're like, yo,
- 30:58Speaker 7: this whe Snapchat.
- 30:59Speaker 3: I just came out.
- 31:00Speaker 7: We're like yo, we just want a beat thing on Snapchat.
- 31:04Speaker 7: So this producer, this guy, he's an A and R.
- 31:06Speaker 7: He's going to come and take some of our beats
- 31:07Speaker 7: for some artists. So I said cool, cool, cool. So
- 31:10Speaker 7: old boy comes in and my record is playing. There's
- 31:13Speaker 7: a record called Lotto at the time. He's like, yo,
- 31:14Speaker 7: that's your I was like, yeah, man, that's me. He
- 31:17Speaker 7: was like, Yo, my name is Tony G. I worked
- 31:22Speaker 7: for G Unit Records. I said, bro, this is crazy.
- 31:27Speaker 7: I said, yo, I'm playing dre on the fifties new
- 31:30Speaker 7: show Power. He was like, bro, I do the music
- 31:32Speaker 7: for that show.
- 31:34Speaker 3: I said what. He was like, Yo, this fifth No
- 31:36Speaker 3: you sing? I said, bro. No. He was like, oh,
- 31:38Speaker 3: he got to hear this.
- 31:40Speaker 7: So he tells me to come to the office the
- 31:41Speaker 7: next day, right so my meeting was at one o'clock.
- 31:45Speaker 7: I was supposed to be there at once. So when
- 31:47Speaker 7: you have these meetings you play records, it's really like
- 31:49Speaker 7: a forty five thirty forty five minute meeting, so you
- 31:52Speaker 7: just it's never that long. But this day, I was late,
- 31:55Speaker 7: so I'm panicking. So I get there at two fifteen
- 31:58Speaker 7: and he's a minutes later hour because of traffic.
- 32:01Speaker 3: Bro I was flippling.
- 32:03Speaker 7: Yeah, I was out, So I'm like, damn, I lost
- 32:05Speaker 7: that bloom. This is crazy hour and fifteen. So but
- 32:08Speaker 7: they're cool. Tony he's like, it's cool, don't worry, bro,
- 32:10Speaker 7: I get it. So I get in and then as
- 32:13Speaker 7: soon as I sit down and play the first record,
- 32:16Speaker 7: fifth walks and he comes into the office. So if
- 32:18Speaker 7: I was on time, he would have himself. He No,
- 32:21Speaker 7: he wasn't supposed to be there. He wasn't supposed to
- 32:23Speaker 7: be there. Sorry, he wasn't supposed to be there. So
- 32:26Speaker 7: it was just Tony g getting to know play, hear
- 32:28Speaker 7: more stuff, and then we're going to figure out.
- 32:29Speaker 3: What we were going to yeah, introduce it to him.
- 32:32Speaker 3: So that's what that was crazy.
- 32:35Speaker 7: But so he comes in and he's like, yo, ro
- 32:37Speaker 7: what you doing here. I'm like, oh, I'm playing some records, man,
- 32:41Speaker 7: playing some records.
- 32:41Speaker 3: Bro. He's like, what you do music?
- 32:43Speaker 4: He was like.
- 32:44Speaker 3: I was like yeah. He was like, y let me
- 32:45Speaker 3: hear this. Okay, so he's thinking, I don't know he was.
- 32:48Speaker 3: He does that fifty laugh. Well, okay, this is gonna
- 32:50Speaker 3: be funny, that type of energy funny. All right. Cool.
- 32:54Speaker 7: He sits down and we played the record and he
- 32:58Speaker 7: just goes like, oh, it makes me play the record
- 33:02Speaker 7: ten times and he's like, okay, listen, I'm gonna put
- 33:05Speaker 7: a verse on this and I want to offer you
- 33:07Speaker 7: a deal. And that's how I got my Gami to
- 33:09Speaker 7: deal bro. Like literally, just god grace, Tony g the
- 33:15Speaker 7: snapchat guys meeting at the same time. Everything is aligned,
- 33:18Speaker 7: and you yeah, I signed to Genie so again. And
- 33:22Speaker 7: I think the thing about it was Fifth was so
- 33:25Speaker 7: impressed that I didn't even ask him, you know, so
- 33:27Speaker 7: I think he respected the grind of He still found out,
- 33:31Speaker 7: you know, on his own.
- 33:31Speaker 5: You know, what was that like being being signed to
- 33:34Speaker 5: Genius because this is this is different, this is past
- 33:37Speaker 5: you know, the Tony ya Yale with that eror, but
- 33:39Speaker 5: now it's like R and B So what was that like?
- 33:41Speaker 5: Because number one, you're working with him on the show,
- 33:44Speaker 5: and now you're working with him for the music.
- 33:47Speaker 3: How was that now? It was?
- 33:48Speaker 2: It was?
- 33:49Speaker 5: It was.
- 33:50Speaker 7: It was dope because at first it was like, all right, bro,
- 33:54Speaker 7: you gotta really really work hard. But then you're a
- 33:56Speaker 7: full time actor too, so how are you going to
- 33:58Speaker 7: do this? So I didn't sleep, bro, like I didn't.
- 34:01Speaker 7: It was studio, studio, studio, work, work, work, film, film,
- 34:06Speaker 7: and no life.
- 34:07Speaker 3: And I had to just compartmentalize my time.
- 34:10Speaker 7: And I knew I had to do the hostings and
- 34:12Speaker 7: as well because that was the only way I was
- 34:14Speaker 7: going to eat. Because I made sure I didn't touch
- 34:15Speaker 7: any of the power of money. Okay, yeah, so for
- 34:18Speaker 7: six years, for the six years, bro, I didn't I
- 34:20Speaker 7: didn't touch any of that. I didn't touch. I just
- 34:22Speaker 7: let that collect and build and be there. That was
- 34:26Speaker 7: like the nest egg, you know. I didn't want to
- 34:28Speaker 7: touch that, you know.
- 34:29Speaker 3: And so so yeah, I was like, this music gotta work.
- 34:33Speaker 7: But working with fifth Man, it was it was amazing
- 34:35Speaker 7: because I was able to see him as a businessman,
- 34:38Speaker 7: I was able to see him as an artist. I
- 34:40Speaker 7: was able to see him as an actor. I was
- 34:41Speaker 7: able to see and have close understanding of how he runs,
- 34:44Speaker 7: you know, what he does, you know and so, and
- 34:47Speaker 7: it was very motivating. But at that time I was
- 34:50Speaker 7: still trying to find my sound too.
- 34:51Speaker 3: So it was it was a really dope experience, really
- 34:55Speaker 3: dope experience.
- 34:55Speaker 4: So let's get into this.
- 34:56Speaker 6: Yeah, you talked about it briefly, but all right, your
- 35:00Speaker 6: dad is an investment banker. Yes, your first your first
- 35:05Speaker 6: job in acting, he made you save all of the
- 35:09Speaker 6: money a quarter million dollars you put up.
- 35:12Speaker 4: Then you are in power for six years, six seasons,
- 35:15Speaker 4: six seasons, and he made you.
- 35:18Speaker 3: Save all of that.
- 35:18Speaker 4: This was my choice, This was my choice, but you
- 35:20Speaker 4: had got that from him.
- 35:21Speaker 3: But I got that idea from him.
- 35:23Speaker 6: So the first time he made you do it, the
- 35:24Speaker 6: second time you did it on my own. Yeah all right,
- 35:26Speaker 6: So you so now you save all of your power money.
- 35:30Speaker 6: Yeah right, six seasons worth of money season and you're
- 35:33Speaker 6: only living off of club hostings and shows and shows
- 35:37Speaker 6: that you're doing. Now you got a nest each of
- 35:41Speaker 6: money that saved. What do you what do you do
- 35:44Speaker 6: with that money?
- 35:45Speaker 7: So with that, I put a lot of it back
- 35:47Speaker 7: into stocks. And what I did, right, after that was
- 35:54Speaker 7: by my first house. So the first purchase with that
- 35:57Speaker 7: money was real estate. So I paid for my first
- 36:01Speaker 7: shown primary resident that you're living in. Yeah, so you
- 36:03Speaker 7: brought no mortgage.
- 36:04Speaker 3: You just no mortgage. I just purchased at cash.
- 36:07Speaker 7: And then with then I built another house in Orlando
- 36:12Speaker 7: as an investment property so to airbnb it for Disney World.
- 36:16Speaker 3: Like Disney World, so I did.
- 36:17Speaker 7: So what I did was I tried to research where
- 36:19Speaker 7: can I make the most money and what would keep
- 36:22Speaker 7: the occupancy rate of my house busy all year where
- 36:27Speaker 7: so Orlando was the first one one or two, and
- 36:31Speaker 7: I realized that if I could, if I could build
- 36:33Speaker 7: another house three miles away from Disneyland, five bedroom, six bathroom,
- 36:39Speaker 7: that's going to be very valuable. And then so I
- 36:44Speaker 7: bought that out as well cash. So now, okay, cool,
- 36:46Speaker 7: I know that I have liquid every month from that
- 36:50Speaker 7: is no anything, So it's like hoa fees and all
- 36:52Speaker 7: those things. But it's another money that I can just have.
- 36:56Speaker 7: And the first thing it was beautiful, man Like, within
- 36:59Speaker 7: now seven months of having it, it already went up
- 37:03Speaker 7: two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, you know what I mean.
- 37:06Speaker 7: So again it's just realizing, okay, making the money, begets
- 37:10Speaker 7: more money and make money. So then now I'm like,
- 37:12Speaker 7: all right, cool, let me get another one, you know.
- 37:14Speaker 7: And so I built another one in Nigeria, Victoria house,
- 37:17Speaker 7: another house to Airbnb as well, but that one is
- 37:23Speaker 7: now for like film films used the house, content content creator,
- 37:28Speaker 7: music videos.
- 37:30Speaker 3: Yeah, so that's that in Nigeria as well.
- 37:33Speaker 6: So all right, we got the money in stocks money
- 37:37Speaker 6: stock blue chip companies like Google, Yes, Amazon, Apple, stuff
- 37:40Speaker 6: like that.
- 37:41Speaker 3: What year was that that you because you said that
- 37:43Speaker 3: twenty twelves.
- 37:44Speaker 5: In my head, I'm thinking about wait, this is like
- 37:46Speaker 5: the inception of Facebook going public.
- 37:48Speaker 3: No no, no sorry, so then Facebook came later with
- 37:52Speaker 3: power money sorry yes.
- 37:53Speaker 4: So all of those blue chip companies.
- 37:55Speaker 6: Yes, then you buy your own residents that you're living in, yes,
- 37:58Speaker 6: cash cash, the Airbnb property in Orlando cash. Then you
- 38:04Speaker 6: after that you buy the house in Nigeria cash. So
- 38:08Speaker 6: all right, this is interesting because so a lot of
- 38:12Speaker 6: athletes are entertainers. They go broke because they the decision
- 38:15Speaker 6: making that they make. Right, So it's like, all right,
- 38:17Speaker 6: instead of buying, let's say somebody has a million dollars, right,
- 38:21Speaker 6: and what they'll do is instead of buying five hundred
- 38:25Speaker 6: thousand dollars house in cash, they'll buy a ten million
- 38:28Speaker 6: dollar house and have a twenty thousand dollars a month mortgage.
- 38:33Speaker 6: And the problem is that it's no problem to pay
- 38:35Speaker 6: that if you're getting paid twenty thousand an episode. But
- 38:38Speaker 6: when the episode stops, what do you do Now you
- 38:40Speaker 6: got twenty thousand dollars a month that you gotta pay,
- 38:43Speaker 6: let alone with the taxes taxes, So that in itself
- 38:46Speaker 6: is an interesting decision to make. Was that your thought
- 38:50Speaker 6: process to say, Okay, I don't like this is an
- 38:52Speaker 6: up and down game for me, so I'd rather just
- 38:54Speaker 6: keep my bills low and pay it in cash as
- 38:57Speaker 6: opposed to having a dope crib.
- 38:59Speaker 7: But I got to pay it, so yeah, it was
- 39:01Speaker 7: more so like let me build. I was like, look,
- 39:04Speaker 7: I'm not going to build my dream house yet, let
- 39:07Speaker 7: me just build something that's really dope for me. At
- 39:09Speaker 7: the time, I was a bachelor, So let me just
- 39:11Speaker 7: build a dope crib for myself and figure.
- 39:14Speaker 3: Out the rest.
- 39:15Speaker 7: But let me build another one so that you know,
- 39:19Speaker 7: I'm consistently going to see money for everything. So now
- 39:22Speaker 7: this home is now paying all my build my phone
- 39:25Speaker 7: at this so I'm living for free because at this
- 39:27Speaker 7: point acting in music is so all over the place.
- 39:31Speaker 3: You don't know what's going to happen tomorrow. So I
- 39:33Speaker 3: was like, let me just make sure everything was good.
- 39:35Speaker 7: And then during this time, man bro like it was
- 39:39Speaker 7: four months before COVID, so everything shut down except Orlando.
- 39:46Speaker 7: People were still figuring out ways to travel and this
- 39:49Speaker 7: and this and this because Florida was still open. So
- 39:52Speaker 7: I'm still being able to make money while sitting down.
- 39:55Speaker 7: And Hollywood was done for a year, you know, so
- 39:59Speaker 7: I with no buil, know nothing, and I'm still doing
- 40:01Speaker 7: shows and everything as well. Like it was just everything
- 40:04Speaker 7: was just still collecting and collecting, collecting by the choices
- 40:07Speaker 7: I made. So then the house in Nigeria was also
- 40:11Speaker 7: people were like, okay, cool, well the prices are low
- 40:14Speaker 7: for airbnb, so this is a time where I can
- 40:17Speaker 7: go stay in his place. So I was renting it
- 40:19Speaker 7: out for three four months at a time to people.
- 40:22Speaker 7: You know what I mean that I knew had some
- 40:24Speaker 7: bread and needed somewhere to go, so it was still
- 40:26Speaker 7: able to just collect collect and I know that you know,
- 40:29Speaker 7: God willing thirty years from now these homes of retirement plans,
- 40:33Speaker 7: you know what I mean, if if I hold it
- 40:34Speaker 7: along oil flipping and you know, get two more houses whatever.
- 40:37Speaker 3: But yeah, it was still just making money.
- 40:40Speaker 5: So this is this is pretty incredible. And so you
- 40:42Speaker 5: got the power money your stashing. But the music money
- 40:44Speaker 5: starts to pick up. Yes, me and my beds out. Yes,
- 40:47Speaker 5: now you're watching this so to talk about watching the
- 40:51Speaker 5: growth of that record grow and the type of money
- 40:53Speaker 5: that that brought.
- 40:54Speaker 3: Because now everybody's streaming, it's exactly perfect timing for you.
- 40:56Speaker 7: So the record so in my Bed actually he got
- 41:00Speaker 7: hot during covidep So during COVID, everybody's making videos about
- 41:06Speaker 7: in my bed.
- 41:06Speaker 3: Everybody's doing this about whatever. So many people knew that
- 41:09Speaker 3: it was you. When I first heard that, I know
- 41:10Speaker 3: it was you. Yeah yeah yeah, a lot of people
- 41:13Speaker 3: didn't know.
- 41:13Speaker 7: A lot of people know. But then they started shazaming.
- 41:15Speaker 7: Then the video came out and people were like, yo,
- 41:17Speaker 7: he's really he really does this, you know what I mean.
- 41:20Speaker 7: And before In my Bed I had another record called
- 41:23Speaker 7: Love Love Rhythm. Yeah, so it was like, okay, he
- 41:25Speaker 7: did it, he did it once, Oh he did it again.
- 41:29Speaker 7: So it became that and I structured my deal with
- 41:32Speaker 7: Empire where it's not an artist deal. I was more
- 41:35Speaker 7: of a partnership, so a lot of the money that
- 41:38Speaker 7: I make independently comes to me, you know.
- 41:41Speaker 3: So during this time, so.
- 41:42Speaker 7: My streams are hitting, going crazy, it's going and I'm
- 41:46Speaker 7: still able to do shows. But if I was, if
- 41:50Speaker 7: I was to, if I was with a major at
- 41:51Speaker 7: the time, I would have seen way less money, you know.
- 41:54Speaker 7: So again it was a situation where I kind of
- 41:56Speaker 7: bet on myself because we skipped over the fact that
- 41:59Speaker 7: fifty had let me out my deal.
- 42:00Speaker 3: So yes, yes, yes, two thousand and seventeen, twenty eighteen,
- 42:05Speaker 3: so he had let me on my deal.
- 42:07Speaker 4: How long was the deal supposed to be for No,
- 42:09Speaker 4: it was I.
- 42:10Speaker 3: Think three albums, three albums with Fifth and you did one,
- 42:15Speaker 3: albur I did one.
- 42:16Speaker 7: You just told him, Mike, Yeah, I told him, like, listen, man,
- 42:19Speaker 7: I want to I want to bet on myself, you know,
- 42:21Speaker 7: and I feel like and during that time there was
- 42:23Speaker 7: a lot of he was changing a lot with the label.
- 42:26Speaker 7: It was hit fired everybody, So there wasn't anything really
- 42:29Speaker 7: tangible for me to stay there, and he didn't want
- 42:31Speaker 7: me to stay there, knowing that he was going through changes.
- 42:34Speaker 5: You never made it till you owe me Monday, So
- 42:36Speaker 5: that's good. You never you never part that series where
- 42:39Speaker 5: you owe me.
- 42:39Speaker 3: Oh no, no, no, he made I don't know if
- 42:41Speaker 3: you remember, but he was like, oh I owe him money.
- 42:43Speaker 3: You remember that?
- 42:43Speaker 4: Oh yeah, you man?
- 42:44Speaker 3: What's going on? Listen?

- 46:36Speaker 7: So that was actually a marketing again his marketing genius man.
- 46:39Speaker 7: So he let me out my situation. But any if
- 46:44Speaker 7: you do any deal, obviously a label is going to
- 46:46Speaker 7: put up money that they loan you to make whatever,
- 46:50Speaker 7: and then you owe them back through your mechanicals. So
- 46:52Speaker 7: we had a situation where he had put up about
- 46:55Speaker 7: if in four years you put up and maybe like
- 46:57Speaker 7: two hundred and fifty three hundred thousand investments in the
- 47:00Speaker 7: videos and and shows, and da da da da da.
- 47:03Speaker 7: So he just made sure that I paid it off
- 47:06Speaker 7: through my mechanicals with Empire. So it was it's really nothing,
- 47:10Speaker 7: you know, it's anything. But he was like, bruh, this
- 47:13Speaker 7: is how I'm gonna market you. I'm gonna say I
- 47:15Speaker 7: want to punch you in your face at least twenty
- 47:17Speaker 7: five times and I'm gonna say this, and they got
- 47:19Speaker 7: the number one album in the country, and but I'm
- 47:22Speaker 7: gonna say, I'm gonna punch you in your face and
- 47:24Speaker 7: break your nose and this. So I'm like, bro, what's
- 47:27Speaker 7: why why? He said, trust me, Bro, it's gonna work. Bro,
- 47:30Speaker 7: it's gonna work. It's gonna work.
- 47:31Speaker 3: So he's like, yo, TEMs, He's gonna call you the
- 47:33Speaker 3: next day. Da da Da da da.
- 47:34Speaker 7: And at the time, my album was number one on
- 47:38Speaker 7: the R and B charts, but it was you know,
- 47:41Speaker 7: it starts off for three four days and it could
- 47:43Speaker 7: fall off. But with him doing that, it made people
- 47:45Speaker 7: be like, yo, he we got a number one album.
- 47:48Speaker 7: Well let me go check this second.
- 47:50Speaker 3: And it stayed number one for about another two weeks.
- 47:52Speaker 3: So it was brilliant.
- 47:53Speaker 7: That's how That's what actually broke love rhythm, you know
- 47:56Speaker 7: what I mean. But so I was able to pay
- 47:58Speaker 7: that back off through my mechanicals and you know, get
- 48:00Speaker 7: out of that situation.
- 48:01Speaker 3: So but it was it was dope mechanicals. What does
- 48:04Speaker 3: that mean?
- 48:04Speaker 7: So the money that you make from streams, the money
- 48:07Speaker 7: that you make from airplay, the money that you make
- 48:11Speaker 7: from publishing everything that's from title Pandora. Every time you
- 48:16Speaker 7: get a stream, so basically one hundred and fifty streams,
- 48:21Speaker 7: usually one hundred and fifty streams equates to like one dollar,
- 48:25Speaker 7: So if you get five hundred, if you get about
- 48:31Speaker 7: it takes about seventy five million streams in total to
- 48:35Speaker 7: go gold.
- 48:36Speaker 3: So that's the thing.
- 48:37Speaker 7: So you do the seventy five million divided by one fifty.
- 48:40Speaker 7: I think it's about five hundred thousand. So that's how
- 48:44Speaker 7: they break it up. So they break it up with
- 48:45Speaker 7: definitely like getting So that's why it's so important to
- 48:49Speaker 7: get your your your songs on Spotify, get your songs
- 48:53Speaker 7: on Apple Music. All these things are super important because
- 48:56Speaker 7: you need to be on these these playlists to get
- 48:59Speaker 7: to get your streams up.
- 49:00Speaker 3: So that's what it was.
- 49:02Speaker 7: So I was getting whenever I make the money from that,
- 49:06Speaker 7: I'd have to give a portion to him. So we
- 49:08Speaker 7: had like a twenty five percent split, so he'll get
- 49:11Speaker 7: twenty five percent of whatever came in until it's paid back.
- 49:14Speaker 3: That's what.
- 49:15Speaker 6: So when you're having that conversation with fifty, yeah, when
- 49:19Speaker 6: so he says this is the plan, Yeah, it's going
- 49:23Speaker 6: to help. But then when he's relaying, it's messing on
- 49:25Speaker 6: social media. He's not joking, like people don't know what's
- 49:28Speaker 6: a joke. No, yeah, they think it's serious.
- 49:30Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, so.
- 49:33Speaker 4: Hey, how was that for you? Like people, people came like, yo,
- 49:36Speaker 4: you okay?
- 49:36Speaker 3: Like where they can see yeah people, yo, bro, no
- 49:39Speaker 3: even snoop call. He was like, Bro, I'll pay your
- 49:41Speaker 3: debt for you. Bro.
- 49:43Speaker 7: I don't want you to have these problems. No, I said, Bro,
- 49:45Speaker 7: it's good. We're just playing. It's like, oh shit, okay,
- 49:47Speaker 7: cool bro, make sure you're good man, Like I know
- 49:49Speaker 7: how fifty get bro. And you got to see him
- 49:51Speaker 7: every day too.
- 49:52Speaker 3: Oh shit, and we're still filming the show drink about
- 49:55Speaker 3: to get killed. Yeah. Then we thought, yeah, so it
- 49:59Speaker 3: was it was. It was crazy man, because again it's
- 50:02Speaker 3: him just doing his thing. But yeah, I have to
- 50:04Speaker 3: deal with that.
- 50:04Speaker 7: I was like, yo, you're good, Like Jamie called me, like, yo,
- 50:07Speaker 7: you're good, bro, Like I can give you fit them
- 50:09Speaker 7: down from power fixed.
- 50:11Speaker 6: So like the mind of fifty cent, right, yeah, let's
- 50:13Speaker 6: talk about this for a minute, because I'm sure you've
- 50:15Speaker 6: seen it.
- 50:16Speaker 4: You've been around it.
- 50:17Speaker 6: Yeah, how strategic because we see him do these things
- 50:20Speaker 6: a lot Yeah, how strategic is he as a person, because,
- 50:25Speaker 6: like I said, on the outside, it just looks like,
- 50:27Speaker 6: oh fifty just being fifty again.
- 50:28Speaker 3: He going off on this person, going off on that person.
- 50:31Speaker 3: Everything everything I knew. I realized a man was a
- 50:33Speaker 3: marketing genius. Bro when.
- 50:36Speaker 7: He sat us all down, he sot the cast down.
- 50:39Speaker 7: And this is when we were filming season two, and
- 50:41Speaker 7: he was like, yo, Empire, they're on Fox, they got
- 50:45Speaker 7: the big bag. We can't compete with them with the
- 50:48Speaker 7: the marketing and their promotion and advertisement.
- 50:50Speaker 3: We're on Stars. We cannot compete.
- 50:52Speaker 7: But I'm going to start a beef with them that
- 50:55Speaker 7: they have to mention us every time they get interviewed.
- 51:00Speaker 7: So I'm going to go straight for Taraji, I'm going
- 51:02Speaker 7: to go straight for Terrence. I'm going to go straight
- 51:03Speaker 7: for everybody and make whoever's the interviewer ask about did
- 51:09Speaker 7: you hear what fifty said about power being better and everything?
- 51:12Speaker 7: So I saw how he attached himself to one hundred
- 51:16Speaker 7: million dollar.
- 51:17Speaker 3: Promotion and it put us like this the pit, like, oh,
- 51:23Speaker 3: what's better? Power? Empire? And I saw him create that
- 51:26Speaker 3: and like so it was like a Monday.
- 51:29Speaker 7: He said, I'm going to go sit down with I
- 51:30Speaker 7: forgot who he was and it was went by Wednesday,
- 51:33Speaker 7: it was Power and this to a point where Taraji's
- 51:36Speaker 7: going crazy about fifty Terrence is going crazy and it
- 51:39Speaker 7: was just like wow, like, you guys don't understand that
- 51:41Speaker 7: this man really just is playing with you strategically, and
- 51:46Speaker 7: now we are now in competition with y'all and every
- 51:49Speaker 7: time you do something you have to mention that and.
- 51:51Speaker 4: Your name is automatically automatically because your.
- 51:53Speaker 3: Fifty cents show Power.
- 51:54Speaker 7: He was saying that fifty cent said this about your show,
- 51:58Speaker 7: not better being and better So everybody, I was like,
- 52:00Speaker 7: what show is this to do that?
- 52:01Speaker 3: Because at the.
- 52:01Speaker 7: Time Power Wasn't people found out about Power for real,
- 52:05Speaker 7: like maybe season like they didn't watch it when.
- 52:09Speaker 6: It was on.
- 52:09Speaker 3: Did you watch it when it was first thought?
- 52:12Speaker 4: Was the season two?
- 52:13Speaker 3: I feel like that's when that's when it really hit,
- 52:15Speaker 3: Like so that's when he went to Miami. Yeah that's two.
- 52:19Speaker 7: Three was Miami yet that was mine. That was one
- 52:22Speaker 7: of my first first episodes with Angela. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 52:26Speaker 7: So that's when it took off. So it became that
- 52:29Speaker 7: because of now we tied to one hundred million dollars.
- 52:32Speaker 7: Marketing plan, gorilla marketing, gorilla marketing.
- 52:35Speaker 5: But you have now we got to talk about something
- 52:40Speaker 5: very important, said you once for a bachelor. Yes, yes, brother,
- 52:43Speaker 5: Let's talk about one of the most important decisions you made.
- 52:45Speaker 5: Yes brother, Mary and Vanessa. Yes, talk about how you
- 52:48Speaker 5: met story behind it.
- 52:50Speaker 7: So met v so v Vanessa Man, incredible woman, my god, man, Like,
- 52:54Speaker 7: she saved my life, bro, because I was out here thoughting.
- 52:56Speaker 7: Brother saved my life, my guy, recovering of recovering. Fact,
- 53:03Speaker 7: it was bad for me. It was actually really good
- 53:04Speaker 7: for me actually, but nah. So she's an artist herself,
- 53:10Speaker 7: you know, and she's one of the biggest artists from Tanzania.
- 53:13Speaker 7: So she was basically the East African Rihanna. So she
- 53:17Speaker 7: had a show, she had a show. We met an Essence,
- 53:21Speaker 7: so she had to show Essence and I also had
- 53:23Speaker 7: a show of performing at the main stage of Essence.
- 53:26Speaker 7: So this particular weekend, though, I had a joint that
- 53:29Speaker 7: flew in, you know, like a little you know, weekend,
- 53:33Speaker 7: So she flew in.
- 53:34Speaker 3: So this is the craziest story, bro.
- 53:37Speaker 7: So at the time, Shorty was with me the entire day,
- 53:41Speaker 7: but then at night she was like, I'm not feeling
- 53:43Speaker 7: too well, and I have to go stop by this
- 53:45Speaker 7: private Spotify party and I was like, I'm going to
- 53:48Speaker 7: be there for fifteen minutes. You don't have to come,
- 53:50Speaker 7: I'll be there, I'll be back and then just meet
- 53:51Speaker 7: us at the next spot. So in that fifteen minutes
- 53:55Speaker 7: we go and then I see V sitting on a
- 53:58Speaker 7: pool table.
- 53:59Speaker 3: I'm like, oh my god, this is crazy, so start talking.
- 54:02Speaker 7: I didn't know who she was at the time, but
- 54:04Speaker 7: they introduced me and I was like, they told me
- 54:06Speaker 7: who she was, but I didn't really care about that.
- 54:09Speaker 3: I was like, yo, your vibing.
- 54:10Speaker 7: We just started talking. So fifteen minutes turned into about
- 54:13Speaker 7: two and a half hours. So I forgot, like I'm tripping, you.
- 54:16Speaker 6: Know what I'm saying.
- 54:17Speaker 3: I forgot, bro, So I'm getting text like where are you.
- 54:20Speaker 3: I'm like, oh oh. So then he was like focused.
- 54:24Speaker 3: They focused.
- 54:25Speaker 7: So V is like V is literally like, you know,
- 54:28Speaker 7: I want to see you tomorrow before I leave, and
- 54:31Speaker 7: I'm like, listen, let me just be honest with you.
- 54:33Speaker 7: I got a situation. I don't want to put you,
- 54:35Speaker 7: I don't want to let me. Let me deal with
- 54:37Speaker 7: this and then I can focus on you. And I
- 54:40Speaker 7: usually I wasn't like that.
- 54:41Speaker 3: I was like, yeah, you hear, what's up. But I
- 54:44Speaker 3: was like, there was a fire to the city.
- 54:49Speaker 7: It's multitizing, But I was there was a respect there,
- 54:51Speaker 7: you know, and it was a it was a it
- 54:53Speaker 7: was a different type of love, man.
- 54:54Speaker 3: And so she goes.
- 54:56Speaker 7: She leaves, still talking and still talking in that time.
- 55:00Speaker 7: Difference is different, man. So she leaves and at the time,
- 55:02Speaker 7: now I'm building my house. I'm building the house in Atlanta, So.
- 55:09Speaker 3: Asking her like, yo, what do you think of this?
- 55:10Speaker 3: I want to do this. I want to do this.
- 55:13Speaker 7: And by the time the house is done, me and
- 55:15Speaker 7: her about three four months and it's just long distance talking.
- 55:19Speaker 7: So I didn't know that the house that I'm building
- 55:22Speaker 7: is basically being built for us, you know what I'm saying.
- 55:26Speaker 7: So by the time it's done, it's like, Yo, She's like,
- 55:28Speaker 7: I want to come to the States.
- 55:29Speaker 3: You know. She comes to States and she at the time,
- 55:32Speaker 3: she hates America. She was like, there's too much going
- 55:34Speaker 3: on here.
- 55:35Speaker 7: And it gets to the point where bro, like, I
- 55:38Speaker 7: was like, Yo, do you want to go back? You
- 55:40Speaker 7: can just we can figure it out. You can stay
- 55:41Speaker 7: with me.
- 55:42Speaker 3: And when she came never left.
- 55:44Speaker 4: So y'all was you hadn't seen in essence, you didn't
- 55:48Speaker 4: see her again.
- 55:49Speaker 6: I didn't see it for three months. But y'all talking
- 55:52Speaker 6: talking every day when she comes back to America. Is
- 55:56Speaker 6: when she comes back to America? Is it like we
- 55:58Speaker 6: just friends or y'all like really.
- 55:59Speaker 3: Non locking, Like it's basically a relationship.
- 56:02Speaker 6: You get a relationship virtually virtually a lot of what's happened,
- 56:06Speaker 6: a lot of what's that?
- 56:07Speaker 3: What's that?
- 56:08Speaker 4: How she comes to America? Y'all already, Yeah, we live.
- 56:10Speaker 7: But it was like she was like, let me just
- 56:12Speaker 7: come for two weeks, you know, let me just see
- 56:14Speaker 7: for two Weeks'm gonna take off from everything. But then
- 56:15Speaker 7: the two weeks turned into now four.
- 56:17Speaker 3: Years, Bro, she never went back.
- 56:18Speaker 4: She hasn't gone back.
- 56:20Speaker 3: She has not gone now. She hasn't gone back to Tania. No,
- 56:22Speaker 3: she had four years and four years now.
- 56:25Speaker 4: Does she miss it?
- 56:26Speaker 7: Yeah, she missed her family, But I think she was
- 56:28Speaker 7: just like, there's nothing there really for me. And the
- 56:30Speaker 7: cool thing about it was she wanted to When we
- 56:33Speaker 7: first met, she was already telling me she wants to retire.
- 56:35Speaker 7: She just wants to be focused on business and focus
- 56:38Speaker 7: on her life focused on just learning herself because she's
- 56:41Speaker 7: been doing it for fifteen years. So it was like
- 56:45Speaker 7: her ending that and then me saying, yo, just you
- 56:48Speaker 7: might as well just stay and it became the perfect
- 56:49Speaker 7: situation and.
- 56:50Speaker 6: I got the whole family and got so but she's
- 56:53Speaker 6: still very big and yeas Africa yeah yeah, so all right,
- 56:58Speaker 6: let's talk about the Africa. Yeah, so you are born
- 57:02Speaker 6: in America, but obviously your roots are Nigerian, yes, yes,
- 57:05Speaker 6: and you go back there a lot, yes, And she's
- 57:09Speaker 6: obviously huge on the East soul. You got the East
- 57:11Speaker 6: and West side. Yeah, so do you guy, what do
- 57:14Speaker 6: you guys have plans?
- 57:15Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 57:16Speaker 6: For Africa as far as like expansion business music, like
- 57:20Speaker 6: how do you look at that?
- 57:21Speaker 3: So again, so.
- 57:24Speaker 7: For music for her, when she retired, she owns all
- 57:28Speaker 7: her stuff, all her streaming and everything.
- 57:30Speaker 3: She owns everything. So like when she retired, her songs
- 57:34Speaker 3: became iconic, so she's not making music anymore.
- 57:37Speaker 7: So she's not making music anymore, but her songs have
- 57:38Speaker 7: become iconic and staples. So then she's still streaming very
- 57:42Speaker 7: well because of it. And what we did was in
- 57:44Speaker 7: terms of business, we started the app, a wellness app
- 57:46Speaker 7: together called for the better, not me, and what it
- 57:49Speaker 7: is is. It started off in covid where it was
- 57:52Speaker 7: just like, yo, let's just give gratitude to make gratitude
- 57:55Speaker 7: posts for people of videos, so like every day they'll
- 57:59Speaker 7: get a video post from me or her. But we
- 58:02Speaker 7: wanted people to subscribe. So then we were like, well,
- 58:05Speaker 7: that's too basic. Let's make it where they get an
- 58:07Speaker 7: inside look at our life. Let's get to where like, okay,
- 58:11Speaker 7: what we love, what we do, what we did. So
- 58:14Speaker 7: we're like, okay, let's charge five dollars per month, forty
- 58:18Speaker 7: five for a year, twelve dollars for three month subscriptions.
- 58:21Speaker 7: So we're like, let's figure this out. Let's let's let's
- 58:24Speaker 7: make money. Let's let's give something to our fans. And
- 58:26Speaker 7: they were like, yo, why is Instagram and all these
- 58:29Speaker 7: platforms getting free money, like freedom, like they were posting
- 58:34Speaker 7: to them and not earning anything, you know, why don't
- 58:36Speaker 7: we control our content? And so it was like, all right,
- 58:39Speaker 7: let's figure out a different way to make better. We
- 58:41Speaker 7: know people and nosy as hell, so let's capitalize on that,
- 58:44Speaker 7: but also give you know, Bible scriptures that we love
- 58:48Speaker 7: or what I like to eat on my workout regimen
- 58:50Speaker 7: to our core fans, and we started seeing during the pandemic.
- 58:54Speaker 7: For the last two year, we started seeing a lot
- 58:56Speaker 7: of subscriptions to our show. So we're constantly making content
- 59:00Speaker 7: that's just for our fans, and that's what's keeping her
- 59:04Speaker 7: really alive as well in Tanzania because they're getting they're
- 59:09Speaker 7: seeing her and what she really does as a mom,
- 59:12Speaker 7: now you know what I mean.
- 59:14Speaker 3: So it's been really good.
- 59:15Speaker 5: You said keyword retired, and we kind of had this
- 59:18Speaker 5: conversation before, but that that conversation when you're looking at
- 59:22Speaker 5: your spouse, So you're looking at your wife at the
- 59:24Speaker 5: time and seeing like I may want you to focus
- 59:27Speaker 5: on something else, like as your career is thriving.
- 59:30Speaker 3: What was that like, right, because she's obviously established as
- 59:32Speaker 3: a musician.
- 59:33Speaker 5: I told you it was there a number that you
- 59:35Speaker 5: said that we need to reach as a couple, or like,
- 59:38Speaker 5: how did the dynamics work for her to stop?
- 59:40Speaker 7: Well, for me, it was like, Okay, let me figure
- 59:43Speaker 7: this out because everything is paid off, so there's no stress,
- 59:47Speaker 7: you know what I mean.
- 59:48Speaker 3: So that's a big thing for me. It was like, Okay,
- 59:51Speaker 3: there's no stress. You being here is not going to
- 59:54Speaker 3: make it ten to fifteen thousand dollars more a month.
- 59:58Speaker 3: You know, it's more.
- 59:59Speaker 7: So okay, we'll figure this out, but let's start doing
- 1:00:02Speaker 7: outside businesses that now you're in control of. So we
- 1:00:05Speaker 7: created the app and now she completely runs that. So
- 1:00:08Speaker 7: she gets her salary her monthly you know what I mean,
- 1:00:12Speaker 7: and it's all hers, you know what I mean. So again,
- 1:00:14Speaker 7: and she also has her streaming, which has picked up
- 1:00:17Speaker 7: more than when she was actually an artist, you know,
- 1:00:19Speaker 7: and it keeps growing every year, every year, every year.
- 1:00:22Speaker 7: And then we also she was like, I want to,
- 1:00:23Speaker 7: I want to, I want to make a Swahili book.
- 1:00:27Speaker 7: So we also made a Swahili book where it's like
- 1:00:30Speaker 7: twenty five easy words that anybody in the world because
- 1:00:33Speaker 7: Swahili is the number one spoken African language. So we
- 1:00:37Speaker 7: made a book whereas on Amazon and people able to
- 1:00:40Speaker 7: just learn different words, easy words or easy phrases. So
- 1:00:45Speaker 7: that was also another thing that we did. So we
- 1:00:47Speaker 7: were like, let's just figure out different businesses that keep
- 1:00:50Speaker 7: you busy and keep your mind coming up creative, keep
- 1:00:54Speaker 7: you still feeling like you're part of, you know, the
- 1:00:56Speaker 7: culture as well.
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: And yeah, so we just created more businesses for each other.
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: How many subscribers we got on that, so we are
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: up to now about eight nine thousand, nine thousand subscriptions.
- 1:01:10Speaker 7: Yeah yeah, and so a subscription and it's just like
- 1:01:15Speaker 7: a look in your life, yeah, looking in life.
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: Yeah, so it's like a look in our life.
- 1:01:20Speaker 7: It shows again what I like to eat, what she
- 1:01:23Speaker 7: likes to eat, things we're reading, how how we both
- 1:01:26Speaker 7: are as parents, how we deal with the relationship, giving
- 1:01:31Speaker 7: relationship advice. So it's all these things for the better
- 1:01:35Speaker 7: than me that it just really just gives us, like
- 1:01:37Speaker 7: we'll post That's why we stop really posting each other
- 1:01:40Speaker 7: on our Instagram because it's like, if you really want
- 1:01:43Speaker 7: to see us traffic here, So again we've done it.
- 1:01:46Speaker 7: Where nine thousand subscribers, that's that's five dollars a month.
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:01:50Speaker 7: So she's in a space where okay, you know, she's
- 1:01:53Speaker 7: really happy, you know. So again that is and then
- 1:01:56Speaker 7: keep building that and keep building that.
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: And she has eight million followers, yes, eight million followers. Yeah,
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: cause we were like, yo, there got to be at.
- 1:02:03Speaker 7: Least ten thousand people that want to pay file like,
- 1:02:05Speaker 7: they got to be at least thirty thousand, like out
- 1:02:07Speaker 7: of the eight million, and out of my three eleven million,
- 1:02:10Speaker 7: there got to be thousands of people. So we're able
- 1:02:12Speaker 7: to make even three thousand subscribers a month. You know,
- 1:02:17Speaker 7: that's you know, that's still a nice piece of change
- 1:02:19Speaker 7: just to So we were just thinking from that and
- 1:02:21Speaker 7: we were like, we don't need that much, but we
- 1:02:23Speaker 7: can still build it every day.
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: So you know what, again, that's what we're at.
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: So where's the skincare line coming to play?
- 1:02:29Speaker 7: So during COVID, I was using a lot of different
- 1:02:33Speaker 7: products that were breaking my skin out, man, and I
- 1:02:36Speaker 7: was just like, yo, like, let me create my own
- 1:02:39Speaker 7: thing that both men and women can use. That's all organic,
- 1:02:44Speaker 7: that is true to me, and it feels regal and again, man,
- 1:02:49Speaker 7: God's gift.
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: Man.
- 1:02:50Speaker 7: I partnered with these these guys in Israel and we
- 1:02:55Speaker 7: got minerals from the Dead Sea. So the Dead Seat people,
- 1:02:59Speaker 7: if you don't know, it's a healing component. So a
- 1:03:03Speaker 7: lot of people go down to grease. I mean, it's sorry,
- 1:03:06Speaker 7: a lot of people go down to Israel to go
- 1:03:08Speaker 7: straight to the Dead Sea to heal any type of
- 1:03:10Speaker 7: skin diseased, skin orders, skin disorders, skin cancer, e zima,
- 1:03:16Speaker 7: all these things. So I was like, oh, this is
- 1:03:18Speaker 7: perfect and it's one hundred percent natural. So we partnered
- 1:03:21Speaker 7: the deal. I was like, they were like, what do
- 1:03:23Speaker 7: you want to call it? I was like, no, I
- 1:03:25Speaker 7: want people to have favor favor, you know, favor over
- 1:03:27Speaker 7: their life, faivor over this, and I know how important
- 1:03:30Speaker 7: skin and feeling sexy and feeling good and having good
- 1:03:34Speaker 7: skin millions of people, so wanted to make a unisex.
- 1:03:37Speaker 7: So did the deal with them, and it's been about
- 1:03:41Speaker 7: a good year so far and it's doing really really well.
- 1:03:45Speaker 7: So we have skin cleanser, toner, moisturizer, lotion, under eye,
- 1:03:54Speaker 7: so it's everything that you need to take care of
- 1:03:56Speaker 7: your skin and favor Skin dot com.
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: You can go check it out. But it's really really
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: really good and really healthy for you.
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: So that the only place they can get is from
- 1:04:05Speaker 5: the website or we trying and distribute to you know,
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: the big box stores here in America and internationally as well.
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: So that's the plan.
- 1:04:12Speaker 7: So we're actually talking to Target right now, but also
- 1:04:15Speaker 7: we're getting it on Amazon as of right now, is
- 1:04:18Speaker 7: from it's on the website, so Favorite Skin dot com
- 1:04:20Speaker 7: FA v R Skin dot com. So it's on the
- 1:04:23Speaker 7: website now, but we're getting it through Amazon, so it
- 1:04:26Speaker 7: can now go global because again me and v our fan.
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: Base reaches Africa, Europe. So once that happens, it's going
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: to be crazy.
- 1:04:33Speaker 7: And then we're working out a situation with HSN now yeah,
- 1:04:38Speaker 7: so we're in talk, so we were about to finalize that.
- 1:04:40Speaker 7: So once that happens, you know, and then the target
- 1:04:43Speaker 7: conversation has happened as well. So and everyone loves the product,
- 1:04:46Speaker 7: like genuinely loves loves the product, and it's.
- 1:04:49Speaker 3: Been really really really really dope for both men, women,
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: kids as well. And it's all organic, all organic.
- 1:04:55Speaker 5: I feel like you have a natural audience, right, you
- 1:04:57Speaker 5: have nine thousand people that are watching it part of
- 1:04:59Speaker 5: routine exactly. This is part of your daily routine exactly right,
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: So from a marketing standpoint that were you conscious of
- 1:05:06Speaker 5: that and made that.
- 1:05:07Speaker 7: Absolutely So on the app, we show the whole skincare regiment.
- 1:05:11Speaker 7: We show how to how to use it, what to do,
- 1:05:14Speaker 7: even give like a breakdown of what each mineral and
- 1:05:16Speaker 7: what each thing does for it. So out of the
- 1:05:19Speaker 7: nine thousand, we may say about let's say four thousand
- 1:05:22Speaker 7: have purchased it, you know, automatically, so and then realizing
- 1:05:27Speaker 7: that once somebody actually tries it, they want it all
- 1:05:33Speaker 7: the time, now, you know. And that's that's been the
- 1:05:35Speaker 7: consensus from a lot of our fans and just people
- 1:05:37Speaker 7: were just discovering it. But we know that once it
- 1:05:39Speaker 7: goes the HSN, once it gets to Amazon, we know
- 1:05:42Speaker 7: it's going to be on a different level.
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: And it's doing pretty well.
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: So all right, let me ask you this, Well, how
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: many before we get there?
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: How many products are in that line?
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: It's about five products? Fire products, so it's like a moisturized.
- 1:05:56Speaker 7: Moisturizer, toner, lotion, uh, face mask, and and the actual
- 1:06:04Speaker 7: the actual wash.
- 1:06:05Speaker 6: So we see Rihanna shot to her become a billionaire
- 1:06:08Speaker 6: of fine yes cosmetics, Kylie Jenner, Yes, billionaire off of cosmetics.
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: It's just the kind of goals that you have.
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, I mean, yes, absolutely.
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: Even though it's not cosmetics per se, but it's skinkill.
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: Because it's my life, you know. And the funny thing is, man,
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: I do.
- 1:06:29Speaker 7: What really got me the idea was I did a
- 1:06:33Speaker 7: character named Butterscotch, you know, I put like this white.
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:06:37Speaker 7: So a lot of companies were like, yo, we would
- 1:06:39Speaker 7: love for you to be a part of this, can
- 1:06:42Speaker 7: you rock out?
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: This and this and this?
- 1:06:44Speaker 7: And I'm like, why would I give my brand to
- 1:06:47Speaker 7: you when I can create my own my own you know,
- 1:06:50Speaker 7: face mask and my own face product and you know,
- 1:06:53Speaker 7: skincare line.
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: So let me just not give you this. Let me
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: make my own stuff. So that's what started it.
- 1:06:59Speaker 7: But yes, from seeing the success of it, man, like again,
- 1:07:01Speaker 7: and you just start seeing like these checks come in
- 1:07:04Speaker 7: every three months, You're like, oh, it's very motivating, you know,
- 1:07:07Speaker 7: it's very motivating to see that damn something I created
- 1:07:10Speaker 7: is now you know, helping fund my life, you know,
- 1:07:12Speaker 7: And so it's pretty dope.
- 1:07:14Speaker 3: How do you protect the product?
- 1:07:15Speaker 5: Like you said that you went to Israel, Israel got
- 1:07:18Speaker 5: minerals from the Dead Sea, Like, how do we protect
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: another brand from following the same pattern or is there
- 1:07:23Speaker 5: a way to protect it?
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: That's a great question. Well anybody can you know, I can't.
- 1:07:29Speaker 7: I don't own the Dead Sea right however, but like again,
- 1:07:32Speaker 7: it comes into the marketing, you know, again, it comes
- 1:07:34Speaker 7: into even just the even learning how the bottle, like
- 1:07:39Speaker 7: the colors of the bottle, it depends on it, and
- 1:07:42Speaker 7: then the product and then people just literally seeing results
- 1:07:46Speaker 7: so fast, I don't think again, it being so pure
- 1:07:51Speaker 7: and for people to trust you with their face, you
- 1:07:53Speaker 7: know what I mean, and then for them to see
- 1:07:54Speaker 7: that it works the word of mouth of everything. So
- 1:07:57Speaker 7: I think just the difference would be the marketing and
- 1:08:01Speaker 7: just making sure people understand that it's unisex, that there's
- 1:08:04Speaker 7: not a lot of unisex products too.
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: You know, people are scared to do that, you know.
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: But again seeing the results of that, it's been beautiful.
- 1:08:11Speaker 6: So to jay Z, you meet him when you're a teenager. Yeah,
- 1:08:14Speaker 6: but then I guess you meet him again with the
- 1:08:17Speaker 6: Rock Nation branch. Ye when was that and how was that?
- 1:08:21Speaker 7: So this was two thousand and eighteen, twenty eighteen, and
- 1:08:26Speaker 7: at the time my song loved it and was going crazy,
- 1:08:31Speaker 7: and so I haven't seen whole at that time for
- 1:08:35Speaker 7: maybe wow, ten years maybe ten years if that. So
- 1:08:39Speaker 7: I'm not sure how if you remember again, you don't
- 1:08:43Speaker 7: know if he watch his power, you don't know nothing.
- 1:08:45Speaker 7: So he sees me, he's like, Row, what's up, And
- 1:08:48Speaker 7: it's like, oh wow, this is what's.
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: Up, bro, you know what I mean. It was a moment.
- 1:08:52Speaker 7: But then realizing he was like, man, I'm so proud
- 1:08:55Speaker 7: of what you're doing. Man, I'm so happy for you.
- 1:08:57Speaker 7: I love what you're doing. Man, you're super super talent.
- 1:09:00Speaker 7: I love the songs. And then his nephews. He was like,
- 1:09:03Speaker 7: how y'all niggas let this nigga go? How do you
- 1:09:05Speaker 7: let this nigga go? It was there, He's like, how
- 1:09:08Speaker 7: do you let him?
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: What? Damn? You know?
- 1:09:10Speaker 7: But it was It was a dope moment of again validation,
- 1:09:13Speaker 7: knowing that you know again, like you made an impact
- 1:09:16Speaker 7: on one of the greatest life and he's still watching
- 1:09:18Speaker 7: you are up to now.
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: I'm not too sure.
- 1:09:20Speaker 7: I think they worked for Rockne No no, no, no, no, no, nothing,
- 1:09:24Speaker 7: nothing's wrong, But like, I think they still work with
- 1:09:25Speaker 7: Rockne there.
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: So I was telling you we were flying and House
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: Partly is my favorite movie of all time.
- 1:09:33Speaker 5: So let me watch the new rendition of it, and
- 1:09:35Speaker 5: I pop up and I see you on screen perfectly
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: about to sit down on him next week. Can you
- 1:09:39Speaker 5: talk about that, that transition from being on a TV
- 1:09:43Speaker 5: series now being on the bag screen because a lot
- 1:09:45Speaker 5: of actors, I feel, find it it's tough because the
- 1:09:49Speaker 5: TV series takes a lot of your schedule. Yes, whereas
- 1:09:52Speaker 5: movies can be two to three months, and there's a
- 1:09:54Speaker 5: timing that you have to do it right. You don't
- 1:09:56Speaker 5: want to miss your moments. Talk about that transition from
- 1:09:58Speaker 5: TV to film.
- 1:10:00Speaker 7: So okay, So it took eight months out of the
- 1:10:04Speaker 7: year to film Power, So we were filming eight months bro.
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: So again, with movies, the most it will be usually
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: is about forty five days.
- 1:10:14Speaker 7: So that for me freed up a lot of my
- 1:10:17Speaker 7: time to do other things but still have a dope
- 1:10:19Speaker 7: impact on whatever the movie is going to be. Again,
- 1:10:22Speaker 7: I needed for me personally the transition, bro, I need.
- 1:10:25Speaker 7: I needed a break from TV because I needed to
- 1:10:28Speaker 7: consistently build the music up because it takes too much
- 1:10:31Speaker 7: time and doing a series that long, you know, you
- 1:10:34Speaker 7: kind of need like a moment, you know. And again
- 1:10:37Speaker 7: for me, strategically, Dre was such a powerful character that
- 1:10:41Speaker 7: for me to jump into something right away I didn't
- 1:10:44Speaker 7: want it felt like it it would hinder the new
- 1:10:48Speaker 7: show because people would just still see that character. And
- 1:10:52Speaker 7: so for my mental health for the trajectory of my career,
- 1:10:57Speaker 7: it was like, let's take a break from TV, Let's
- 1:10:59Speaker 7: focus on movies. Let's focus on these months and a half,
- 1:11:02Speaker 7: Let's build the music up. Let's don't streuss. And then
- 1:11:05Speaker 7: at that time it was COVID, so everything kind of
- 1:11:07Speaker 7: shut down, you know. So now that the world's done
- 1:11:09Speaker 7: to app back open back up. Now it's like, Okay,
- 1:11:12Speaker 7: if a TV show comes that makes sense, I'm open
- 1:11:15Speaker 7: to it. So now I'm on a TV show called
- 1:11:17Speaker 7: Will Trent on ABC. So with that being said, different dynamic.
- 1:11:23Speaker 7: They don't have a lot of us on there, you
- 1:11:25Speaker 7: know what I mean, It's on ABC. So for me
- 1:11:27Speaker 7: it's like, Okay, you made the right choice. Ro you know, like,
- 1:11:30Speaker 7: so you're able to do this for the two three years,
- 1:11:33Speaker 7: get your family right, spend time with your kids, build
- 1:11:36Speaker 7: your relationship, get to know your woman more before you
- 1:11:39Speaker 7: have to go away now for another eight months to
- 1:11:42Speaker 7: do something. So everything just worked out perfectly.
- 1:11:45Speaker 5: I think selfishly, as fans, it's like, we want to
- 1:11:47Speaker 5: see a Mario on the show for ten season. Yeah,
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: I want to see eas do ten season of Strip.
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: We know there's a window.
- 1:11:53Speaker 7: It's a window that you can't miss because and six
- 1:11:56Speaker 7: seasons of Dre it was a sweet spot where it
- 1:11:58Speaker 7: was like, Okay, I still have room to make ro Timmy.
- 1:12:03Speaker 7: You know, I still have room to build my brand.
- 1:12:05Speaker 7: I still have room to do it, but it's also
- 1:12:08Speaker 7: iconic enough that you'll never forget it. So that's that's
- 1:12:10Speaker 7: that was the sweet spot. So now two three year break,
- 1:12:13Speaker 7: get on something that's completely opposite from that and show
- 1:12:17Speaker 7: you know, my range as an actor.
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: So you got crazy Jamie Fox story too. Yeah, talk
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: about that.
- 1:12:23Speaker 7: So man again, blessed my like God has been good
- 1:12:27Speaker 7: to me. So the first first celebrity that I ever
- 1:12:31Speaker 7: met in LA was Jamie Fox. And again knowing that
- 1:12:35Speaker 7: I wanted to be a triple threat, knowing that I
- 1:12:37Speaker 7: wanted to be an actor, seeing a musician, that's somebody
- 1:12:40Speaker 7: I looked up to. But that specific day he was
- 1:12:43Speaker 7: filming Django. So if you if you remember he was
- 1:12:46Speaker 7: he had the beard, the dirty beard. So it's night,
- 1:12:50Speaker 7: It's night is a party, so feel somebody taped me
- 1:12:52Speaker 7: on my shoulder and he was like, yo, man, what's up.
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: I'm like, what what's up? Something man? Yo? Yo? Yo?
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: Bro.
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: I'm a fan of you. Man. I'm like, oh, thank you,
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: thank you man for show for show. Bro. Yo, bro,
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: what's up? Man? What's up? Bro? I look and I'm like,
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: oh wow, my bad dog? What bad?
- 1:13:10Speaker 7: So So he was like, man, you're super talented man.
- 1:13:13Speaker 7: Me and Leonardo DiCaprio. Stop our show. I stopped stop
- 1:13:17Speaker 7: filming and watch watch you watch your show. Watch boss.
- 1:13:21Speaker 7: On set, we have everybody. We have Quentin Tarantine, everybody
- 1:13:24Speaker 7: watch you man. I'm like, yo, this kid is super special.
- 1:13:27Speaker 7: And he was like, how long you been acting? I'm like, man,
- 1:13:29Speaker 7: I've been acting, you know six months now.
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: He was like what.
- 1:13:33Speaker 7: He's like, you can't take class Like now he was like,
- 1:13:35Speaker 7: oh you like me? Okay, bet look bro, Litsten, come
- 1:13:37Speaker 7: to my cryb tomorrow. Let's talk le So go to
- 1:13:40Speaker 7: his crib the next day and he's like, so, you've
- 1:13:43Speaker 7: been acting, so what have you been doing this all?
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: Yeah? I was like I do music too, Like he
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: was like you do. So go to a studio playing
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: records and he's now blown away. Bro, He's now blown away.
- 1:13:53Speaker 7: And now he's like, yo, you are my little brother,
- 1:13:55Speaker 7: like I got you forever, Like whatever you need, I'm
- 1:13:58Speaker 7: here for you. You're like me, and he was like,
- 1:14:00Speaker 7: I'm gonna help you figure out, you know, money, how
- 1:14:02Speaker 7: to handle these girls. So Jamie became my big brother
- 1:14:07Speaker 7: very very fast, even to the point where when he
- 1:14:10Speaker 7: wasn't even at the crib. I would have the key
- 1:14:12Speaker 7: to the house and just chill and just stay you know,
- 1:14:15Speaker 7: do my meetings and stay at Jamie's crib man. And
- 1:14:18Speaker 7: it was that type of love and just knowing that
- 1:14:20Speaker 7: someone of that caliber who's doing what you're doing, just
- 1:14:23Speaker 7: shows you love and just says I got you. And
- 1:14:26Speaker 7: he's never he's never switched up. And it's been like
- 1:14:29Speaker 7: that for ten years now. But yeah, man, he would
- 1:14:31Speaker 7: come to pop up to my events and get on
- 1:14:33Speaker 7: stage and be like, Yo, this kid's gonna be the one.
- 1:14:35Speaker 7: He's the one watched, you know, and so having that support,
- 1:14:38Speaker 7: you know, it's a confidence booster.
- 1:14:40Speaker 3: But yeah, I didn't recognize him, but it was. It
- 1:14:42Speaker 3: was the funniest thing. And it was I was getting irritated,
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: like yo, stop stop touching me, bro, but it was
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: it was Dole. That's crazy. So is there a dream
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: role that you see yourself wanting to play one day?
- 1:14:54Speaker 5: Like you brought up Jamie, And I felt like when
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: we watched him in Ray, he was born for that moment. Yes, yes,
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: I mean even Common said it like they couldn't tell
- 1:15:02Speaker 5: was me like Jamie Ray because you felt like you
- 1:15:04Speaker 5: were watching Ray Charles. Is there a role out there
- 1:15:08Speaker 5: that you've always dreamed of to say, you know, one day,
- 1:15:11Speaker 5: if the situation is right, I want to be this.
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: I mean I want to I definitely want to be.
- 1:15:16Speaker 7: I don't know if I don't know, I don't know
- 1:15:18Speaker 7: for sure if it's a Marvel character, but I want
- 1:15:20Speaker 7: to be a superhero bro and I have my own
- 1:15:22Speaker 7: franchise of it, whether it's a superhero or whether it's
- 1:15:25Speaker 7: something of like like a dope war veteran that you
- 1:15:29Speaker 7: know goes through something crazy. But that those two ideas
- 1:15:32Speaker 7: I'm definitely flushing out. But also like having like a
- 1:15:35Speaker 7: franchise romantic comedy, you know, like a Meet the Falkers
- 1:15:39Speaker 7: type of situation where it's funny as hell, but like
- 1:15:41Speaker 7: it goes three four or five movies and the dynamic
- 1:15:44Speaker 7: of a Nigerian and another another race families meeting and
- 1:15:50Speaker 7: just be chaotic, you know what I mean.
- 1:15:52Speaker 3: So something something cool like that.
- 1:15:53Speaker 7: But again, whatever's going to be, I definitely want the
- 1:15:56Speaker 7: ownership of it, you know, definitely want the ownership of it.
- 1:15:59Speaker 6: So your independent music, right, yeah, So why would you
- 1:16:04Speaker 6: want to stay independent or go independent or what? Did
- 1:16:06Speaker 6: you have other majors on the table?
- 1:16:08Speaker 7: Yeah. So I think at this point in time, like
- 1:16:11Speaker 7: I knew that my value as as an artist and
- 1:16:15Speaker 7: as a name, as being somebody like Who's famous. I
- 1:16:18Speaker 7: knew because of my relationships, I could cut a lot
- 1:16:21Speaker 7: of the budget that a major would pay, you know
- 1:16:24Speaker 7: what I mean. So, knowing that I didn't have, knowing
- 1:16:27Speaker 7: I'm not a new artist, I didn't I don't need this,
- 1:16:29Speaker 7: saying I don't need a heavy marketing budget.
- 1:16:31Speaker 3: I don't need this and this and this. I can
- 1:16:33Speaker 3: use who I am and what I have.
- 1:16:35Speaker 7: So if I keep my my overhead low, and I
- 1:16:38Speaker 7: know I have all these these these relationships, and I
- 1:16:41Speaker 7: know I also have great music, and I know I
- 1:16:44Speaker 7: can call the radio station and say yo, da da
- 1:16:46Speaker 7: da da da da. I was like, why would I
- 1:16:47Speaker 7: Why would I make Why would I ask for so
- 1:16:49Speaker 7: much and pay back so much when I don't necessarily
- 1:16:53Speaker 7: have to. So I was like, nah, I don't give
- 1:16:54Speaker 7: me that much. Let me let's let's work this and
- 1:16:56Speaker 7: then everything out of that. Get me out of the
- 1:16:58Speaker 7: get me out of the red and black faster.
- 1:17:01Speaker 3: You know. And so that's what I realized.
- 1:17:03Speaker 7: But then again, you build the levers to then sit
- 1:17:06Speaker 7: with a major and say, let's partner instead of letting
- 1:17:08Speaker 7: letting me be just an artist underneath you know, underneath them.
- 1:17:12Speaker 7: Now it's like a fifty to fifty split, eighty twenty split,
- 1:17:14Speaker 7: whatever we work out.
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: But I had to build that and show that, okay,
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: you know.
- 1:17:18Speaker 7: And plus I keep majority of the money, more than
- 1:17:20Speaker 7: most most artists who are on majors, you know, in
- 1:17:24Speaker 7: terms of deals, So it made more sense.
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: When you're doing those type of shows and deals.
- 1:17:29Speaker 5: The power or the leverage that you built from acting
- 1:17:31Speaker 5: yes helps in the music right absolutely, especially in negotiation.
- 1:17:34Speaker 7: In negotiations, so you know my value. So it's not like,
- 1:17:37Speaker 7: I mean, if the music was bad, then okay, but like,
- 1:17:40Speaker 7: since the music is good, you see that there's already
- 1:17:43Speaker 7: eyes on me.
- 1:17:44Speaker 3: So okay, you don't have to do heavy lifting. Okay.
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: It means I don't have to get a five hundred.
- 1:17:50Speaker 7: Thousand budget that I need to do all this when
- 1:17:52Speaker 7: you can give us one hundred and we can do
- 1:17:54Speaker 7: the same thing and then we out of that hundred faster,
- 1:17:57Speaker 7: you know.
- 1:17:57Speaker 3: So that's kind of the mindset that I was at.
- 1:18:00Speaker 6: So what's your plans for the future, Like, what's your
- 1:18:03Speaker 6: top priorities?
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: Music is it acting, entrepreneurship.
- 1:18:09Speaker 3: My top priority.
- 1:18:12Speaker 7: Is entrepreneurship because it comes with everything, right, so that
- 1:18:19Speaker 7: now being a father bro like it changes.
- 1:18:22Speaker 3: It makes you so selfless. So now, yeah, the music
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: is dope, the acting is dope.
- 1:18:27Speaker 7: But now I'm thinking of, okay, everything, How can I
- 1:18:30Speaker 7: make sure my son is good, my daughter is good?
- 1:18:32Speaker 7: How can I how can I protect their future? Okay,
- 1:18:37Speaker 7: I put up money here that they can't touch. Maybe
- 1:18:39Speaker 7: when they're eighteen they can touch this or so I'm
- 1:18:41Speaker 7: doing everything for them now, and I know being an
- 1:18:44Speaker 7: entrepreneur allows all of this to take care of.
- 1:18:46Speaker 3: Them so selfishly.
- 1:18:48Speaker 7: Before that I would have definitely been like, oh, music
- 1:18:51Speaker 7: for life, but now it's more so like entrepreneur to
- 1:18:54Speaker 7: take care of my family.
- 1:18:55Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:18:56Speaker 7: So, how do we make sure these books sell? How
- 1:18:59Speaker 7: do we get more subscribe? How do we get more
- 1:19:01Speaker 7: favor you know?
- 1:19:02Speaker 3: How do we get this? How do we make more
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: dope records? How do we get on TV and save
- 1:19:06Speaker 3: this bread again? And do that run over? You know?
- 1:19:08Speaker 3: So that type of thought and it is beyond me
- 1:19:12Speaker 3: is beyond me.
- 1:19:13Speaker 5: That's a lot, man, that's a lot. The next part
- 1:19:18Speaker 5: of it is you spoke about investing. Yeah, So are
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: you still actively using your brokerage account or is it
- 1:19:25Speaker 5: just long term?
- 1:19:26Speaker 3: Long term? Long term buying hold, Yeah, buying hold, buying
- 1:19:29Speaker 3: home man, Yeah, buying hold. Bro, there's no need, you.
- 1:19:33Speaker 5: Know, lasting very last time, and it's because it goes
- 1:19:38Speaker 5: back to being married.
- 1:19:39Speaker 3: Yeah, you have financial discipline. Yeah. Did you walk into
- 1:19:42Speaker 3: the relationship with your wife has in financial discipline? No?
- 1:19:45Speaker 3: She was the case man.
- 1:19:48Speaker 5: Bro.
- 1:19:48Speaker 4: She was so bad.
- 1:19:49Speaker 7: Bro, Like it was so bad because it was so
- 1:19:52Speaker 7: bad that at one point of it, she she's not realized.
- 1:19:57Speaker 7: So when we're building the app, so she's not realizing,
- 1:20:00Speaker 7: she's like, I want this part of it, I want this, this, this,
- 1:20:02Speaker 7: and we're talking to the buildings. Yeah, so she's not realized.
- 1:20:06Speaker 7: I'm like, I'm like, every every time you call them
- 1:20:08Speaker 7: and talk to them about this, so you're gonna put
- 1:20:11Speaker 7: us in the whole before we even make it. And
- 1:20:14Speaker 7: she did you know what I'm saying. So it's like yeah,
- 1:20:17Speaker 7: and it's like I can't get mad. It's like, all right,
- 1:20:19Speaker 7: we just gotta figured. And she felt so horrible. So
- 1:20:21Speaker 7: I'm happy that happened early because now she's like I'm
- 1:20:23Speaker 7: going to just listen and just follow what you're doing.
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: Now. She's incredible with it. Now, man, it's really dope.
- 1:20:28Speaker 3: That's dope. Still, I know you said saving power checks,
- 1:20:32Speaker 3: saving these checks. What is the basis that we do now?
- 1:20:36Speaker 3: Is it the app? Like how it shows?
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: Show?
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: Still still wow?
- 1:20:40Speaker 7: Still nothing else show money, hosting's endorsements and and and
- 1:20:46Speaker 7: and and also just you know, singing wedding singing again,
- 1:20:49Speaker 7: you know what I mean. I have a new record
- 1:20:51Speaker 7: called I Do and it's like a really powerful wedding song.
- 1:20:55Speaker 7: So now people hire me to come singing their wedding
- 1:20:58Speaker 7: for that song.
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: Man.
- 1:20:58Speaker 4: And so again you're still don't what you're still.
- 1:21:01Speaker 7: Don't yea, yeah, yeahs at the price, I'm not and
- 1:21:05Speaker 7: my parents ain't stealing my money, yeah, he.
- 1:21:07Speaker 5: Said the Nigerian wedding sing And I'm in my head,
- 1:21:09Speaker 5: I'm thinking coming to America. It's like because I think
- 1:21:12Speaker 5: you're in part two, but in my head I'm saying.
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: Geez your queen too.
- 1:21:16Speaker 7: Yeah yeah, man, I was like, listen, man, again, let
- 1:21:20Speaker 7: me just save all the acting. I still don't touch
- 1:21:22Speaker 7: my active money. I still haven't, bro I still make
- 1:21:24Speaker 7: sure I don't this because again for me, it's just
- 1:21:26Speaker 7: there's no need to you know, and and again living
- 1:21:29Speaker 7: off the road, that road money and saving everything else,
- 1:21:33Speaker 7: everything else, so nothing is touched.
- 1:21:36Speaker 4: So you're the most popular couple of Africa.
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: Yeah, So.
- 1:21:42Speaker 6: Do you have plans for Africa as far as like,
- 1:21:45Speaker 6: I don't know in terms of what like musical bigger
- 1:21:50Speaker 6: than music, just like ambassadors, like I feel like you,
- 1:21:54Speaker 6: I mean, like as far as like rebranding the continent,
- 1:21:59Speaker 6: I don't know, building a hotel or something the part
- 1:22:01Speaker 6: like you see Akon doing what he's doing, right and
- 1:22:03Speaker 6: you see. So I feel like Africa right now is
- 1:22:06Speaker 6: going to be the continent of the next century. And
- 1:22:08Speaker 6: there's a lot of investment in Africa from a variety
- 1:22:11Speaker 6: of different places, China and different things in the nature.
- 1:22:14Speaker 6: So it's always good when people that's actually from yeah,
- 1:22:17Speaker 6: can actually benefit from it and rebranded, right.
- 1:22:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:22:21Speaker 6: I call it positive propaganda absolutely as opposed to negative propaganda.
- 1:22:25Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:22:25Speaker 6: So you guys being you know how big you guys are.
- 1:22:30Speaker 6: I see it as an opportunity and it's both sides
- 1:22:34Speaker 6: of the continent, east side, west side, so it's like
- 1:22:35Speaker 6: really the whole continent. So have you ever even thought
- 1:22:38Speaker 6: about that, Like you guys role as Africa Ambassadors.
- 1:22:42Speaker 7: Yes, yes, yes, So we've talked about building a school
- 1:22:45Speaker 7: out there and making it a school for.
- 1:22:49Speaker 3: Film and everything.
- 1:22:51Speaker 7: That's basically kind of like how Oprah did it, where
- 1:22:54Speaker 7: it's not necessarily the curriculum, it's more so about kids
- 1:22:58Speaker 7: being really gifted at something. So if you're a really
- 1:23:01Speaker 7: gifted singer, if you're really gifted actor, if you really
- 1:23:03Speaker 7: if you're dope at sports, if you're dope at if
- 1:23:05Speaker 7: you want engineering, it becomes not like STEM but more
- 1:23:09Speaker 7: like really just tailor made school for just the gifted,
- 1:23:13Speaker 7: you know, whatever they wanted to focus on it. So
- 1:23:15Speaker 7: if you go and say I like engineering, but oh
- 1:23:17Speaker 7: I fell in love with music here, the curriculum will
- 1:23:19Speaker 7: shift for you, you know. So having that type of idea,
- 1:23:21Speaker 7: so like the next three to five years will definitely
- 1:23:25Speaker 7: hone in on that. But and I don't know if
- 1:23:27Speaker 7: it'll be in Nigeria or Tanzania, but obviously one of them.
- 1:23:31Speaker 7: But we're definitely building the school out there, bro for
- 1:23:34Speaker 7: the gifted.
- 1:23:34Speaker 6: So how's your kids, like, is it important for you
- 1:23:38Speaker 6: to teach them the African because they've grown up in Atlanta,
- 1:23:40Speaker 6: they're Americans?
- 1:23:41Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: Is that something you think about or you just.
- 1:23:45Speaker 7: Absolutely absolutely again, like you know, she's she's only been
- 1:23:49Speaker 7: in America for four years.
- 1:23:50Speaker 3: That's an African woman. You know, she does not played.
- 1:23:52Speaker 7: Brol don't play you know what I'm saying. So she
- 1:23:56Speaker 7: her morals as a mom are so beautiful. And then
- 1:23:58Speaker 7: also I was raised by African parents, like an African
- 1:24:02Speaker 7: like in a Nigerian household where it was I was
- 1:24:06Speaker 7: just living in America, but my parents raised me as
- 1:24:09Speaker 7: a Nigerian boy. So those principles are naturally instilled in us,
- 1:24:14Speaker 7: you know, and and and we're going to make sure
- 1:24:16Speaker 7: you know that they have that because it's really important.
- 1:24:20Speaker 7: It's and especially in today's generation, kids get lost very easily, man,
- 1:24:23Speaker 7: so you don't have a hold on them, you know.
- 1:24:25Speaker 7: I make sure that my son, you know, reads and
- 1:24:27Speaker 7: is creative and has less screen time than than than
- 1:24:32Speaker 7: than the average kid because now he's trying to figure
- 1:24:34Speaker 7: things out and he's super intelligent. So yeah, so I
- 1:24:37Speaker 7: think it's more so just keeping the principles I grew
- 1:24:40Speaker 7: up with.
- 1:24:41Speaker 6: So last question, Afrobeats, how has it been for you?
- 1:24:45Speaker 6: And is that something that you're you want to embrace
- 1:24:48Speaker 6: because your music is.
- 1:24:49Speaker 3: Not afrobeats, it's halving hal yeah. Yeah.
- 1:24:52Speaker 6: So seeing the rise of afrobeats from David Old to
- 1:24:56Speaker 6: Vernon Boyd to TAM's Yeah, it's taking over the world. Yeah,
- 1:25:00Speaker 6: how does that feel for you? Like, you know, being
- 1:25:02Speaker 6: Nigerian and yeah, are you leaning more into afrobeats these days?
- 1:25:08Speaker 6: These days because it is so popular.
- 1:25:10Speaker 3: So for me, bro like, I just make music that
- 1:25:13Speaker 3: feels right.
- 1:25:14Speaker 7: And the thing about it is, the two records that
- 1:25:17Speaker 7: are about to go platinum were afrobeat records of mine.
- 1:25:20Speaker 7: So it wasn't me trying to do anything. It was
- 1:25:23Speaker 7: me just being myself and making music that makes me
- 1:25:26Speaker 7: feel good. So me and Punch were talking about earlier.
- 1:25:29Speaker 7: It was just like, bro, like, why don't you do this?
- 1:25:31Speaker 7: Why don't you get on this, Why don't you try this?
- 1:25:33Speaker 7: Why don't you do this? So I'm very versatile as
- 1:25:35Speaker 7: a musician, so I don't really put myself in a box.
- 1:25:38Speaker 7: But it's if it feels good, it feels good at
- 1:25:41Speaker 7: this point in time, you know, and there's no real
- 1:25:43Speaker 7: road map anymore for it. But like we have a
- 1:25:46Speaker 7: record you know that's coming out with Coil Er Ray
- 1:25:48Speaker 7: that's going to be crazy, you know, it's not really
- 1:25:50Speaker 7: an afrobeat records, more kind of dancehall reggae, you know.
- 1:25:53Speaker 7: So it's not it's it's kind of like all over.
- 1:25:58Speaker 7: But I have a wedding song that's traditional R and B,
- 1:26:01Speaker 7: you know. So it's basically just being able to play,
- 1:26:05Speaker 7: you know, the different levels of my talent being musician,
- 1:26:07Speaker 7: be a musician, be free.
- 1:26:09Speaker 4: There you have it.
- 1:26:10Speaker 6: So how can they tap in? Get the skin kare
- 1:26:14Speaker 6: line and all of that. Tell them all of the
- 1:26:15Speaker 6: stuff you got working on anything.
- 1:26:17Speaker 3: So listen.
- 1:26:17Speaker 7: Yes, yes, so favorite skin f A v R. Skin
- 1:26:21Speaker 7: dot com is available for you guys everywhere. If you

- 1:26:42Speaker 3: you for coming.
- 1:26:42Speaker 4: Man. You gotta pull up on us in Atlanta.

- 1:26:51Speaker 4: We gotta showing Ghana at the end.
