Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's going on, everybody? It's
- 0:14Speaker 1: Jeff Mosher and Adam Kaplan. It is that time of
- 0:18Speaker 1: the year of the end of training camp where Adam
- 0:21Speaker 1: and I do our 53-man roster projection. And I will
- 0:25Speaker 1: insert the word, quote, initial projection. roster projection. This was
- 0:30Speaker 1: a tough one. Adam, you alluded to this last pod
- 0:33Speaker 1: that we, when we foreshadowed this, that there were going
- 0:35Speaker 1: to be some really difficult decisions to make. And I
- 0:38Speaker 1: found like the first 46 or 47 to not be difficult.
- 0:41Speaker 1: And even the last five or six, it wasn't about
- 0:44Speaker 1: talent for me or who deserves to be. It was
- 0:47Speaker 1: more about the organizational philosophy of and whether certain things
- 0:51Speaker 1: would change or not change based on new offense. A
- 0:56Speaker 1: couple of players, of course, were IPP players, things like that,
- 1:01Speaker 1: offensive line development. So they had a lot of numbers, right,
- 1:04Speaker 1: at a lot of certain positions. And that's where I
- 1:08Speaker 1: was fighting is like, do they hold on to this
- 1:09Speaker 1: guy because they want to develop him, or do they
- 1:12Speaker 1: think they can get him onto the practice squad? It
- 1:14Speaker 1: was more that to me than who deserves to make
- 1:16Speaker 1: it and not deserves to make it.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I would say that where I struggled with is, okay, corner,
- 1:23Speaker 2: we'll get to that. But corner versus backup nickel versus safety,
- 1:30Speaker 2: then team value. Ties go to the teams, to special
- 1:34Speaker 2: teams value. That always has. For sure. That will never change.
- 1:38Speaker 2: You just take the guys, give you a little bit
- 1:40Speaker 2: more value because you do need special teams players.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:43Speaker 2: You need elite coverage players. We can say what we
- 1:46Speaker 2: want about Ringo. he's technically a corner, but he won't
- 1:49Speaker 2: be playing corner barring an emergency, but he's got elite
- 1:52Speaker 2: special teams value. He's I have them on my 53.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Some other people will not, they don't like the player,
- 1:57Speaker 2: but they don't understand the way teams think. But then
- 2:01Speaker 2: it comes down to kind of what you talked about.
- 2:05Speaker 2: This is a team and we still don't know this
- 2:07Speaker 2: in nine years. Why don't more teams put value on
- 2:09Speaker 2: offensive defensive lines like the Eagles do? Why are they
- 2:12Speaker 2: consistently really good? Right. Right. Don't understand it. It, Now,
- 2:18Speaker 2: I also, this is where I struggled. You know, I'd
- 2:21Speaker 2: said at the start of training camp or a little
- 2:24Speaker 2: bit into it that there are probably six to seven
- 2:26Speaker 2: open spots. Like you can go, like you said, 46.
- 2:28Speaker 2: It's the final six or seven where you go, wow,
- 2:30Speaker 2: there are a lot of guys who could actually make
- 2:32Speaker 2: it who you probably didn't think so in April. But
- 2:36Speaker 2: now it's a little bit harder because you now have
- 2:37Speaker 2: the results of training camp, joint practices, which are immense,
- 2:42Speaker 2: as Vic Fangio said, most important, some of the best
- 2:45Speaker 2: ones he's been involved with. And you got three preseason
- 2:48Speaker 2: games of tape information. But, man, and then contracts matter.
- 2:55Speaker 2: It's like Hollywood Brown. I don't see there's any way
- 2:58Speaker 2: that he's not going to be on the team. We
- 3:00Speaker 2: talked about this at a signing. Once I got the breakdown,
- 3:03Speaker 2: they guaranteed all five million. They're not going to cut him.
- 3:05Speaker 2: It's just not going to happen. Plus, he really came on.
- 3:08Speaker 2: And they need one guy who could run. They need
- 3:10Speaker 2: somebody who could run vertically.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I agree with you. I think depth too, right? We've
- 3:15Speaker 1: talked for a while about how they just have not
- 3:17Speaker 1: had depth at wide receiver, but they could get by
- 3:19Speaker 1: when you had two receivers capable of having 1,200, 1,300-yard
- 3:25Speaker 1: seasons in Devontae Smith and A.J. Brown, and you were
- 3:28Speaker 1: a heavy run team. You're still going to be a
- 3:29Speaker 1: heavy run team, but after Devontae Smith, there's some real
- 3:32Speaker 1: question marks as to what the real ceiling is for
- 3:36Speaker 1: any of these guys. I mean, Lemon's a first-round pick
- 3:38Speaker 1: in his rookie year. He may have a high ceiling,
- 3:40Speaker 1: but he ain't going to reach that year one. I
- 3:43Speaker 1: understood my own decisions to keep Brown and even go
- 3:46Speaker 1: a little bit deeper with veterans there that we'll talk
- 3:48Speaker 1: about the one. So this is going to be fun
- 3:51Speaker 1: for YouTube watchers because I'll be the first woman. I
- 3:54Speaker 1: am not a great like visuals PowerPoint or whatever guy,
- 3:58Speaker 1: but I did throw together a chart that shows who
- 4:01Speaker 1: we kept the numbers, the best that I could in
- 4:04Speaker 1: the limited time to do it. So, you know, people
- 4:07Speaker 1: can make fun of me, but at least we'll be
- 4:08Speaker 1: able to go through it and see the names. But
- 4:11Speaker 1: the one, area where I think it matters right between
- 4:15Speaker 1: that one guy is that I decided from a special
- 4:18Speaker 1: team standpoint to not keep a long snapper and that's
- 4:21Speaker 1: why we call it the initial 53 of course they're
- 4:24Speaker 1: going to have a long snapper on their 53 they're
- 4:26Speaker 1: not going to sit there and go three weeks three
- 4:28Speaker 1: weeks three weeks with new new elevations but for the
- 4:31Speaker 1: initial 53 I only kept the two special teams guys,
- 4:36Speaker 1: Braden Mann and Elliott, to keep an extra player who
- 4:40Speaker 1: in three or four weeks will probably be on the
- 4:42Speaker 1: practice squad. But you went with three special teams. You
- 4:45Speaker 1: went with the traditional kicker, punter, long snapper with Rocco
- 4:49Speaker 1: Underwood as the snapper.
- 4:50Speaker 2: So what Howie did last year was because Charlie Hewlett
- 4:53Speaker 2: is vested, he cut him at the initial 53 deadline.
- 4:59Speaker 2: And then later in the week, because as you said,
- 5:01Speaker 2: they had to have a long snapper. Because there was
- 5:03Speaker 2: roster gymnastics. There were a couple things they had to
- 5:05Speaker 2: get through. And then once they got to the 53,
- 5:09Speaker 2: then the rules were a little bit more relaxed. There's
- 5:11Speaker 2: certain things you can do, but you can't at the 53.
- 5:17Speaker 2: There are certain things you have to handle and certain
- 5:19Speaker 2: things that were relaxed last season. Our buddy Frank from
- 5:23Speaker 2: our Patreon group pointed out, I totally forgot about this.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Then I got the language. For decades, you had to
- 5:32Speaker 2: be able to designate guys for return, you had to
- 5:36Speaker 2: hold them at the initial 53. Then hours later, you
- 5:40Speaker 2: could then designate up to two guys initially. Right. Right. Then, then,
- 5:45Speaker 2: and then the remaining six, you could do up to
- 5:48Speaker 2: eight and then playoff teams get to designate up to 10.
- 5:51Speaker 2: But bottom line is there, there are a lot of
- 5:54Speaker 2: roster rules, like a lot of roster rules. The, the, not,
- 5:58Speaker 2: it doesn't, this one doesn't apply to the Eagles part
- 6:01Speaker 2: of it does, but not totally. depending on what they
- 6:03Speaker 2: do with Grenard, but for years it was six weeks
- 6:06Speaker 2: or six games for reserve PUP or reserve non-football injury,
- 6:11Speaker 2: non-football or non-football illness. Now they reduce it to four.
- 6:16Speaker 2: And then the big one, and this is, and COVID
- 6:19Speaker 2: had a lot to do with this. If you recall
- 6:21Speaker 2: for decades, like 40 years, 50 years, you put on
- 6:25Speaker 2: anyone on IR, they're out for the season, even if
- 6:27Speaker 2: they had a two week injury, Yeah, stinger. Could have
- 6:30Speaker 2: been a stinger. Right. The clubs will tell you that
- 6:34Speaker 2: the league was so concerned about Phantom IR and fake injuries.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Though you have to prove it. And by the way,
- 6:42Speaker 2: the league will come. They do periodic checks where the
- 6:46Speaker 2: operations people show up. And they want to make sure
- 6:49Speaker 2: that the injuries... You have to have documentation that you
- 6:54Speaker 2: electronically send in. But they will show up on and out.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Like they... they'll come up whatever, whatever period they want
- 7:01Speaker 2: and make sure everything's being done the right way. So
- 7:04Speaker 2: that's just some of the rules. And we'll, we'll, as
- 7:06Speaker 2: we go forward in the coming days and weeks, we'll
- 7:08Speaker 2: explain once they get for a Monday show, we'll have
- 7:12Speaker 2: more information on the rules. Cause we'll be in the
- 7:14Speaker 2: regular season.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Right.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Sort of though. That's hump week. What we call next week.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Cause there's no, there's no preseason and they're there. The
- 7:22Speaker 2: regular season is the following week. That's the in between
- 7:24Speaker 2: week as we call it. But yeah, a lot, a
- 7:26Speaker 2: lot has changed over the years and, pandemic changed a
- 7:30Speaker 2: lot of it. Yeah. Yeah.
- 7:32Speaker 1: No, I'm glad you brought that up. And that's the
- 7:34Speaker 1: one thing about us doing this 53. Well, there's many things,
- 7:37Speaker 1: but one thing that really could throw a monkey wrench
- 7:41Speaker 1: into it, a little fly in the ointment as Bruce
- 7:45Speaker 1: Willis would say, die hard.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Is that we try to get this done out Saturday morning,
- 7:50Speaker 1: right after the Friday night preseason game. We don't know
- 7:54Speaker 1: what kind of IR situations could arise that could change
- 7:58Speaker 1: the how the 53 would look, you know, I mean,
- 8:01Speaker 1: sometimes guys pop up with injuries after a preseason game.
- 8:03Speaker 1: You didn't even know that they had. So, so we
- 8:05Speaker 1: did our best here without having all the Intel on,
- 8:09Speaker 1: on the medicals coming out of that game. So without
- 8:12Speaker 1: further ado, I will bring up the charts for us
- 8:16Speaker 1: and we'll go through our, both our 53 man roster projections.
- 8:20Speaker 1: How's that look? You like that?
- 8:21Speaker 2: Oh, wow. You said using the Google, Google doc.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Uh yeah using the google doc yep i probably there's
- 8:27Speaker 1: probably something better but this is uh this is all
- 8:30Speaker 1: i know for now so.
- 8:31Speaker 2: I have to uh i can i expand this hang on.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Yes yeah yeah i'm.
- 8:37Speaker 2: On my laptop so this is great yeah yeah because
- 8:39Speaker 2: jeff and i run our company through google docs you're
- 8:43Speaker 2: great man oh wow wow okay okay okay i see.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Now remember, there's people listening and not watching, so we
- 8:53Speaker 1: have to be specific on what we're going to say.
- 8:55Speaker 1: It's interesting.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Boy, you did something that I completely struggled with, but
- 8:58Speaker 2: I'm not going to give it away.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Okay, cool.
- 9:00Speaker 2: One you have in green on offensive line, that was
- 9:03Speaker 2: one of the ones where I just could not make
- 9:05Speaker 2: a decision.
- 9:05Speaker 1: And I'll tell you why I did it when we
- 9:07Speaker 1: get to that. I have it thrown wrong, by the way.
- 9:08Speaker 1: I'll change that in a minute. But all right, let's
- 9:10Speaker 1: just go straight on through. Because I think you and
- 9:13Speaker 1: I did something similarly that I don't believe is going
- 9:16Speaker 1: to be I don't think a lot of other people
- 9:19Speaker 1: doing or whatever will, but you and I both have
- 9:21Speaker 1: three quarterbacks hurts McKee and Dalton, and people are going
- 9:24Speaker 1: to automatically react and say, you guys must be smoking crack.
- 9:27Speaker 1: If you think the Eagles are going to, you know,
- 9:30Speaker 1: not keep Cole Payton after they drafted him in the
- 9:32Speaker 1: fifth round. And while I struggled with it a little bit, Adam,
- 9:36Speaker 1: I thought my philosophy is the Eagles have learned. You
- 9:39Speaker 1: can draft a quarterback on day three and get them
- 9:41Speaker 1: through waivers. And, and maybe Kyle McCord is, He had
- 9:46Speaker 1: a bad preseason. He was not good. He's obviously not fit,
- 9:49Speaker 1: but he came out of college way more as a
- 9:51Speaker 1: pro-ready thrower of the football than Cole Payton. Cole Payton
- 9:55Speaker 1: needs a ton of work. I I believe Cole Payton
- 9:59Speaker 1: is a guy that the Eagles shouldn't be afraid to
- 10:01Speaker 1: wave and try to get back on the practice squad. And,
- 10:06Speaker 1: I think if they didn't have Dalton here, which has
- 10:10Speaker 1: been an issue for them because he's not playing real
- 10:12Speaker 1: well and he's not going to be the QB too,
- 10:14Speaker 1: but you're paying him something and he's probably got some value.
- 10:17Speaker 1: You're hoping that maybe you can move him later. You're
- 10:21Speaker 1: not going to cut Andy. I just don't see it happening.
- 10:24Speaker 1: That's why I don't see room for four quarterbacks. I
- 10:27Speaker 1: don't think they'll struggle with the concept of getting Cole
- 10:30Speaker 1: Payton back on the practice squad.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Yeah, so look, Howie's cut a fifth-round quarterback before. Now,
- 10:35Speaker 2: he didn't cut him the first year. He cut him
- 10:36Speaker 2: the second. Actually, he did cut him the first year.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Who's that? McCord, yeah, last year.
- 10:41Speaker 2: No, no, no. McCord was a sixth-rounder. I'm talking about
- 10:45Speaker 2: fifth-round quarterback.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Was that Thorson?
- 10:48Speaker 2: Clayton Thorson, yes. He was a fifth-rounder.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Actually, I thought he was a fourth.
- 10:51Speaker 2: You're right.
- 10:51Speaker 1: He might have been a fifth. Good point.
- 10:53Speaker 2: He was a fifth. He was a fifth in 2019.
- 10:56Speaker 2: And remember, Eagles want to sign him to the practice squad.
- 10:58Speaker 2: He refused. He went to Dallas. I remember Doug Peterson
- 11:03Speaker 2: won a record saying, yeah, he turned down our offer
- 11:06Speaker 2: to come back, and he never made it. So, yeah,
- 11:09Speaker 2: history has shown that. To me, Cole Payton is so
- 11:12Speaker 2: far away. He's such a project mechanically. He needs so
- 11:17Speaker 2: much development. That's what the practice squad is for. Why
- 11:20Speaker 2: would you hold him? You would not want him active
- 11:24Speaker 2: for any reason this season. To me, it's pointless to
- 11:27Speaker 2: keep him. If you lose him through waivers, oh, well. Right.
- 11:30Speaker 1: And I was, well, it wouldn't surprise me by the way,
- 11:32Speaker 1: if Howie tried to play this like really cute and
- 11:34Speaker 1: tried to even wave them early, you know, like among
- 11:37Speaker 1: the first, just to be like, yeah, he's not, you know,
- 11:39Speaker 1: like just sort of like you send a message. Yeah,
- 11:41Speaker 1: this guy's not there.
- 11:42Speaker 2: We'll wait.
- 11:42Speaker 1: We'll be among the first. But remember, wait real quick.
- 11:47Speaker 1: My devil's advocate. was trying to say, man, bad teams
- 11:50Speaker 1: are looking for quarterbacks. Well, bad teams use the waiver
- 11:54Speaker 1: wire to try to get better. So they try to
- 11:56Speaker 1: use the waiver wire to get players that they think
- 11:59Speaker 1: can help them because you have to put the guy
- 12:01Speaker 1: on your 53. So unless you're in total tank mode,
- 12:06Speaker 1: which in the NFL you don't really see that, that
- 12:09Speaker 1: wasn't enough to weigh me to keep him on the 53.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Now, if they trade Dalton, if they do move him,
- 12:15Speaker 2: then that would be a reason to keep Cole Payton.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Because you've not created a spot. He'll be the inactive
- 12:20Speaker 2: third quarterback all year pretty much.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Right.
- 12:23Speaker 2: But, yeah, he needs a full offseason of development to
- 12:26Speaker 2: work on his passing mechanics. Because, man, I'll tell you what, though.
- 12:29Speaker 2: When he's scoring up correctly and his throwing plan is
- 12:32Speaker 2: what it's called, when it's balanced, there's arm strength there.
- 12:36Speaker 2: But the problem is you have no idea where the
- 12:38Speaker 2: ball is going.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Correct.
- 12:40Speaker 2: You don't want this guy playing. Yeah.
- 12:41Speaker 1: I mean, make no mistake. The Eagles want Cole Payton.
- 12:43Speaker 1: They want to develop him. They have a weird situation
- 12:46Speaker 1: here that we've talked about all season long. Dalton, you know,
- 12:50Speaker 1: in your mind, if you're Howie, you're thinking, you know,
- 12:52Speaker 1: someone's going to get hurt along the way. A team's
- 12:54Speaker 1: going to need to go to its backup quarterback, maybe
- 12:56Speaker 1: within the first three weeks.
- 12:58Speaker 2: And then Atlanta.
- 13:00Speaker 1: And then, well, yeah, there you go, Atlanta. And then,
- 13:02Speaker 1: then that, then you're like, oh, that team's back. Now
- 13:05Speaker 1: that team's backup is a guy who's like, I don't know,
- 13:07Speaker 1: Cade Klubnick, like the Jets, a rookie, you know, like,
- 13:09Speaker 1: you know, you may want a little bit more, especially
- 13:12Speaker 1: if you think, you know, three or four weeks in,
- 13:14Speaker 1: you're a decent team and you just need some veteran presence.
- 13:16Speaker 1: The Jets did, well, not the Jets. I don't want
- 13:18Speaker 1: to use the Jets, but remember when the Eagles traded
- 13:21Speaker 1: Flacco to the Jets? I think at the time they
- 13:23Speaker 1: were trying to like hold the fort down and they
- 13:25Speaker 1: wound up trading for Joe Flacco. So that, I see
- 13:29Speaker 1: that Cole Payton will be on the Eagles in the future.
- 13:31Speaker 1: I just think that this is how the 53 first 53.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Yeah. All right.
- 13:36Speaker 1: All right. Running back. I mean, to me, and it was,
- 13:39Speaker 1: it's too bad because, you know, I was at practice
- 13:40Speaker 1: the other day, Adam, and I thought Damian Pierce kind
- 13:43Speaker 1: of had, you know, cause he missed some time, you know,
- 13:45Speaker 1: he showed a little, a nice burst. It was the
- 13:47Speaker 1: last practice, but he started off showing some bursts, but
- 13:50Speaker 1: he got hurt and I just didn't see the need.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I know the Eagles love their fourth running back sometimes.
- 13:56Speaker 1: And Carson steel made a, Nice push, but I don't
- 14:01Speaker 1: think that there's any more reason for them to keep
- 14:02Speaker 1: more than one.
- 14:03Speaker 2: He's a vested veteran, by the way, if they really
- 14:05Speaker 2: want him. Right. You just work it out with the
- 14:08Speaker 2: player and the agent. I didn't even think about this one.
- 14:10Speaker 2: This was simple. Now, could Carson Steele make it? We
- 14:14Speaker 2: talked about this a week ago after his great game.
- 14:17Speaker 2: The thing with Carson Steele is it's like he'll never play.
- 14:22Speaker 2: You're just holding a spot because he's got some special
- 14:26Speaker 2: teams value. He could run downfield. He just doesn't. He's
- 14:30Speaker 2: never going to play on offense. If everybody's healthy, Shipley
- 14:32Speaker 2: had a really good camp. Like, he really dominated camp.
- 14:35Speaker 2: He was never challenged. I see no point in keeping
- 14:37Speaker 2: Carson Steele, to be honest with you. Good point. Okay.
- 14:41Speaker 2: All right.
- 14:42Speaker 1: So this is wide receiver, and we both have six.
- 14:46Speaker 1: We both saw the first five exactly the same. Devontae,
- 14:50Speaker 1: Mikhail Emin, Tawix, Hollywood Brown, Darius Cooper.
- 14:52Speaker 2: All right.
- 14:54Speaker 1: I really struggled with this and then rationalized Elijah Moore.
- 14:59Speaker 1: You put Britton Covey on, I assume, because you feel
- 15:01Speaker 1: like the Eagles need a punt returner. They do.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Okay.
- 15:04Speaker 1: My thought was this. Elijah Moore is a second-round pick
- 15:07Speaker 1: who's been in a lot of bad offense situations other
- 15:10Speaker 1: than the Bills where he just– we talked about that.
- 15:13Speaker 1: For whatever reason, he couldn't get on the field for
- 15:14Speaker 1: the Bills, and that should be a knock against him.
- 15:17Speaker 1: But he's had a really nice camp. He is a
- 15:19Speaker 1: second-round pick. Joe Douglas, I believe, drafted him. He showed
- 15:24Speaker 1: in an offensive environment in training camp that he can
- 15:27Speaker 1: make some plays. I feel like organizationally thinking the Eagles
- 15:31Speaker 1: will believe they can get Britton Covey on the practice
- 15:33Speaker 1: squad for a few weeks and elevate him as a
- 15:36Speaker 1: punt returner. And that given their uncertainty with Makai Lemon
- 15:41Speaker 1: coming back from the injury and missing a lot of camp,
- 15:43Speaker 1: that Elijah Moore is a valuable piece to have right now.
- 15:47Speaker 1: And if you caught him, yeah, he's a vested vet too.
- 15:50Speaker 1: You could do the thing where you agree. But I
- 15:52Speaker 1: think there are teams that would want him. I mean,
- 15:54Speaker 1: look at the Dolphins. We talk, look at that, how
- 15:56Speaker 1: bad the Dolphins are receiving core. The Falcons, you just
- 15:59Speaker 1: mentioned them before. After Drake London, they've got Zaccheaus, they
- 16:03Speaker 1: have Dotson. They could use that. There are teams that
- 16:05Speaker 1: could use a player who is a second-round pick who
- 16:08Speaker 1: showed you something in camp. So I decided the Eagles
- 16:10Speaker 1: did it to hold on to a guy that maybe
- 16:12Speaker 1: might have a decent future.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Well, he has no chance, Lodge and Mortar, to help
- 16:17Speaker 2: them this season. Right.
- 16:18Speaker 1: I thought about that.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Smith, Lemon. Lemon's healthy now. He'll be their slot. Right.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Tay Wicks is a starter. Hollywood Brown's on the roster.
- 16:28Speaker 2: And Darius Cooper's on the roster. Yep. So, to me,
- 16:32Speaker 2: this is where you use one of your practice squad
- 16:34Speaker 2: exceptions for veterans. And you work out with a player
- 16:38Speaker 2: and the agent. But as you said, and we agree,
- 16:40Speaker 2: we talked about this a week ago. Yeah. Lodge and
- 16:42Speaker 2: Mortimer would be great for a team that really needs them.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Like Miami, where you could probably start after a couple weeks.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Learn the offense. Sure. And they're running West Coast, so
- 16:54Speaker 2: This is West Coast here. He'll know the terminology. The
- 16:56Speaker 2: guy looked good. He had a good training camp. He
- 16:59Speaker 2: showed he could play. But to me, I think if
- 17:02Speaker 2: I'm the player, I want to play, man. This is
- 17:05Speaker 2: a good story. It's been a good story for him.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Good for him that he's done a good job. But
- 17:09Speaker 2: to me, Britton Covey, you're right. I believe he's vested.
- 17:13Speaker 2: I'm reasonably sure he's been in the league long enough.
- 17:15Speaker 2: He was on the Eagles 53-man roster long enough to
- 17:19Speaker 2: get an accrued season. I believe he got it. in
- 17:23Speaker 2: recent years. But anyway, even if he's not, you'd have
- 17:26Speaker 2: to waive him. But if he's a vested veteran, that's,
- 17:29Speaker 2: you could do what you suggested, play the roster tango
- 17:33Speaker 2: first three weeks, bring them on and off because elevations
- 17:36Speaker 2: don't count against your 53. Then they revert on Monday,
- 17:40Speaker 2: Sunday game. But to me, he's the best punt returner.
- 17:43Speaker 2: He's an excellent punt returner. Like if you just want
- 17:46Speaker 2: to be average, but Kyle Lemon was a kickoff returner.
- 17:48Speaker 2: He did. He only had like, like six part returns.
- 17:52Speaker 2: You do it. Sure. Could Hollywood Brown sure do it.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Some teams don't care about punt returns. They just want
- 17:56Speaker 2: someone to one drop the football. To me, why not
- 17:59Speaker 2: be better?
- 18:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Very good punt return. Yeah.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Oh, no, I have. I would have Covey on the
- 18:04Speaker 1: practice squad. I don't think he's going anywhere. And I
- 18:07Speaker 1: also made this decision based on the injury histories for
- 18:10Speaker 1: Devante Smith and then already so far what we've seen
- 18:14Speaker 1: from Lemon. I feel like it would help benefit the
- 18:16Speaker 1: Eagles more. to be a little deeper. You're right. More
- 18:18Speaker 1: can't help them unless that's the case, but that could
- 18:21Speaker 1: very easily be the case. Cause you know, we've seen
- 18:23Speaker 1: Devante Smith get banged up and he's about to have
- 18:25Speaker 1: a a real heavy volume. So we'll, we'll see. I
- 18:28Speaker 1: definitely feel like that was an unpopular decision I made
- 18:31Speaker 1: and I can rationalize against it, but I don't, I
- 18:33Speaker 1: guess we're.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Popular in Covey people. I know people won't agree with me.
- 18:37Speaker 2: I see it a lot.
- 18:37Speaker 1: The football people, Adam, the people who are smart know
- 18:40Speaker 1: that that last wide receiver spot is usually a special team.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Spot, right?
- 18:44Speaker 1: Right.
- 18:45Speaker 2: We forgot to mention he's, he doesn't really contribute on specials,
- 18:47Speaker 2: although he can, we saw him return punts. So anyway,
- 18:51Speaker 2: We both have six, but we differ on Covey and Moore.
- 18:53Speaker 2: We'll see what happens. By the way, both may not
- 18:55Speaker 2: be on the roster.
- 18:57Speaker 1: There you go. I'm someone who really likes to wear jeans,
- 19:00Speaker 1: but it's becoming really, really hard these days to find
- 19:03Speaker 1: jeans that aren't tight fitting or restricting, especially for someone
- 19:07Speaker 1: who's active. I like to go to the gym. I'm
- 19:09Speaker 1: always out and about. Even when I'm not active and
- 19:12Speaker 1: I'm just sitting in a chair, you start to get
- 19:14Speaker 1: that feeling of being constricted and restrained. And I hate
- 19:17Speaker 1: that feeling. Perfect example. Last year, I did a fantasy
- 19:20Speaker 1: football draft. It took three hours and I could just
- 19:24Speaker 1: feel myself moving around my chair, adjusting myself. But everything
- 19:28Speaker 1: changed when I found the perfect jean. It's a jean
- 19:32Speaker 1: that fits me just right. It doesn't pinch. It stretches nicely.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Here's what makes these genuinely different from other stretch jeans.
- 19:40Speaker 2: All right.
- 19:41Speaker 1: They don't look like stretch jeans. They look like sharp,
- 19:44Speaker 1: classic denim. They're so polished that you can go straight
- 19:47Speaker 1: from like a tailgate parking lot right to a dinner
- 19:50Speaker 1: reservation without anybody clocking you as that guy who just
- 19:53Speaker 1: spent four hours in a lot. I just recently did
- 19:56Speaker 1: another fantasy football draft and I wore the perfect jean
- 20:00Speaker 1: and I was just so comfortable. Look, these things are
- 20:03Speaker 1: flexible enough that you can actually move around in them.
- 20:05Speaker 1: You can bend to get that drink in the cooler.
- 20:09Speaker 1: You can sit in a chair for a few hours.
- 20:11Speaker 1: You can stand for the anthem at a ball game.
- 20:14Speaker 1: You can get up and guard somebody in a pickup
- 20:16Speaker 1: game wearing the perfect jean without even hearing a seam
- 20:20Speaker 1: threatened to give out.
- 20:21Speaker 2: All right.

- 20:48Speaker 1: and I'm not going to be going to bed until after, well,
- 20:51Speaker 1: after midnight. And that means the next day, I can
- 20:53Speaker 1: probably count the number of cups of coffee I would

- 22:10Speaker 1: our show and tell them Inside the Birds sent Tight end,
- 22:13Speaker 1: I was a little surprised that you went four. I
- 22:16Speaker 1: understand because we've had the discussion about their lack of depth,
- 22:19Speaker 1: so you keep Grant Calcaterra on with your four. Goddard, Munt, Stowers, Calcaterra.
- 22:24Speaker 1: I just kept it to Goddard, Munt, and Stowers. My theory,
- 22:30Speaker 1: my philosophy on why not Calcaterra is because although he's
- 22:33Speaker 1: a good pass catcher and they need that, I thought
- 22:35Speaker 1: you sought some good pass catching from Stone Smart, who
- 22:38Speaker 1: could be on your practice squad if you need a guy.
- 22:40Speaker 1: I just don't know that he's going to contribute enough.
- 22:44Speaker 1: to Warrant being on the 53.
- 22:47Speaker 2: But Calcaterra, yeah, it comes down to this. We've talked
- 22:49Speaker 2: about it. If Goddard gets hurt, they have a major problem.
- 22:51Speaker 2: Stowers is not ready to contribute. He's on the roster,
- 22:54Speaker 2: but he's a non-factor, at least as of now. You're
- 22:57Speaker 2: basically playing with two tight ends, one who could only
- 22:59Speaker 2: block Johnny Montse, old-school why. He just says, and that's
- 23:03Speaker 2: all he does, is block. And Goddard's their pass catcher.
- 23:07Speaker 2: And Calcaterra's going to be here one way or the other.
- 23:09Speaker 2: He's either going to be on the 53. Mm-hmm. or
- 23:13Speaker 2: the practice squad, unless he decides to sign elsewhere. To me,
- 23:18Speaker 2: because you're probably not going to play Stowers very much initially,
- 23:23Speaker 2: he gives you that opportunity. If you want to play
- 23:26Speaker 2: 12 personnel, you can go with Munt and Calcaterra. You
- 23:28Speaker 2: can play, Goddard could be the Y, Calcaterra could be
- 23:31Speaker 2: the move. We'll play the F position, which you'll see
- 23:35Speaker 2: if you watch. They're lined up. They're not really a fullback.
- 23:41Speaker 2: They're not that deep.
- 23:43Speaker 1: In the backfield.
- 23:43Speaker 2: They're a little bit farther up. But anyway, Eagles did
- 23:45Speaker 2: it with Ertz. They have a history of using an
- 23:48Speaker 2: F-tight end. A lot of teams do. So, as much
- 23:52Speaker 2: as fans don't like him, I'm just telling you, they
- 23:54Speaker 2: look at it differently.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Yeah. I totally understand the need to... And, you know,
- 23:59Speaker 1: he knows the team. He's been there. The one guy
- 24:03Speaker 1: that you and I both are a big fan of
- 24:05Speaker 1: and we both left off because it felt like the
- 24:08Speaker 1: writing was just on the wall. The messages were clear.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Cam Latu.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Just.
- 24:12Speaker 1: And I still think he could help this team in
- 24:15Speaker 1: both ways, as a blocker and a receiver. But when
- 24:18Speaker 1: you don't see him used that way, you can tell
- 24:20Speaker 1: the coaches just have a different idea than what we see.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Honestly, to me, EJ Jenkins got more run than Latu.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Maybe they're hiding him. I don't know.
- 24:30Speaker 2: I don't understand. No, but it wasn't as though– like
- 24:35Speaker 2: in training camp, he just– he was the four or
- 24:38Speaker 2: the five. Like he was a four– And then there
- 24:41Speaker 2: were some times he was not the four. I don't
- 24:44Speaker 2: know what these staffs don't like in this guy, but
- 24:46Speaker 2: he's way better than he's given opportunity to. So, to me,
- 24:50Speaker 2: I have him on my 60-man practice squad, plus the
- 24:53Speaker 2: international player. I would have Lato if he passes through waivers.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Go ahead. All right.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Well, it's just funny. For as much as we talked
- 25:01Speaker 1: about him, right, neither of us put him on the.
- 25:05Speaker 2: The 53 based on what we see. And so we'll see.
- 25:10Speaker 1: By the way, I didn't even struggle with it to
- 25:12Speaker 1: be honest. I didn't like, I just, it just didn't,
- 25:15Speaker 1: like I said, sometimes you see it and it's not there.
- 25:17Speaker 2: And honestly, I would have done three like you did,
- 25:20Speaker 2: but to me early on, because we know that, I mean,
- 25:24Speaker 2: I'm not rolling out stars being active early. We'll see.
- 25:28Speaker 2: We'll see if he's active. Cause again, where's he going
- 25:30Speaker 2: to contribute? Okay. He could run down on special teams. Okay.
- 25:34Speaker 2: Tucker Derrick can do that. You can have him run
- 25:35Speaker 2: down special teams. If he's used correctly, the guy can
- 25:39Speaker 2: help you. We know he can't block, okay? We know that.
- 25:42Speaker 2: But he's an athlete.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Yeah. There's no question he can help. And he would help.
- 25:48Speaker 1: He'd be on the field. I agree with that. All right.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Offensive line, we both took 10. The starting five, Mailata,
- 25:53Speaker 1: Johnson to tackles, Dickerson, Steed at guards, Juergens to center.
- 25:57Speaker 1: We both had the same first four backups of Kendall, Johnson,
- 26:01Speaker 1: Markel Bell, and Lampkin. We just had a different tent.
- 26:05Speaker 1: You had Micah Morris, the rookie guard, six-round pick out
- 26:08Speaker 1: of Georgia. I kept the tackle guard. They're cross-training him.
- 26:13Speaker 1: John Jukwu. I'll tell you what stood out to me
- 26:16Speaker 1: about this guy, Adam, is that right off the bat,
- 26:19Speaker 1: they liked him. They were playing him at second-team left
- 26:21Speaker 1: tackle when Lane was out. They were playing him at
- 26:25Speaker 1: left guard on the second team. Then he got a
- 26:28Speaker 1: peck strain, and it seemed like, oh, man, that's the worst.
- 26:30Speaker 1: He came back sooner than expected, and he immediately took
- 26:33Speaker 1: his spot right back on with the second team. So
- 26:36Speaker 1: in my mind, the Eagles clearly like him, and I
- 26:39Speaker 1: wonder if they see him– as the Fred Johnson of 2027.
- 26:43Speaker 1: They're going to have Markel Bell maybe starting. They're going
- 26:46Speaker 1: to need a backup tackle who's cost-controlled. And this guy
- 26:50Speaker 1: played in the NFL last year for the Titans as
- 26:52Speaker 1: a draft pick a couple of games. They clearly thought
- 26:54Speaker 1: he's somebody worth developing. It's tough to get rid of tackles.
- 26:59Speaker 1: That's a position where you worry about exposing guys. Would
- 27:02Speaker 1: that be waivers? It would be waivers?
- 27:04Speaker 2: Yeah, he's waived. A couple of things, a couple of corrections.
- 27:06Speaker 2: He was not drafted by the Titans.
- 27:08Speaker 1: My fault. He played two games.
- 27:09Speaker 2: You're right.
- 27:09Speaker 1: He was not training.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Yeah, he actually started at right tackle.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Yep.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Eagles, as you said, they've cross-trained in a bunch of positions.
- 27:15Speaker 2: It's John Ojuku. That's how you pronounce it. It took
- 27:18Speaker 2: me a while to get it.
- 27:20Speaker 1: I think I spelled it wrong.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Go ahead. He, the thing, and by the way, just to,
- 27:25Speaker 2: we don't know that it was a pec strain. It
- 27:26Speaker 2: was lysis pectoral. The reason why I say that, he
- 27:29Speaker 2: was back in like three days. You're not straining your
- 27:32Speaker 2: pec and being back in three, like you're not, that's
- 27:34Speaker 2: not happening.
- 27:35Speaker 1: Right.
- 27:35Speaker 2: If he had a spasm, I talked about this last week. Um,
- 27:39Speaker 2: cause you know, like you, once I saw him, like,
- 27:40Speaker 2: are you serious that this guy's doing so well? Uh,
- 27:43Speaker 2: but then he returned to practice a little limited, but
- 27:46Speaker 2: he was back. Um, I, this is the one of
- 27:49Speaker 2: everything that I struggled with. This is the number one
- 27:51Speaker 2: struggle I had. Uh, I just, here's what I'm just
- 27:56Speaker 2: thinking this season. Fred Johnson's has, he can back up
- 28:00Speaker 2: both positions. They like Freddie's, but a good, he's plenty
- 28:03Speaker 2: of starting experience or playing experience rather, uh, marco bell's
- 28:07Speaker 2: going to back up right for i could back up
- 28:08Speaker 2: right or left do you need a third string tackle
- 28:11Speaker 2: honestly is it no no this for me.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Was just developmental like you don't want to lose the
- 28:17Speaker 1: guy you want to develop him yeah.
- 28:18Speaker 2: You don't want to wave him yeah he's subject to
- 28:19Speaker 2: waivers he was an undrafted free agent in 23 i
- 28:22Speaker 2: i hear you that that's the thing i thought about
- 28:25Speaker 2: i'm like i just don't when roster spots are at
- 28:27Speaker 2: a premium yeah you could You'll hear this with me
- 28:34Speaker 2: on defense where I struggled positionally and then numbers-wise, but
- 28:39Speaker 2: I just felt like to keep 11, it's got to
- 28:44Speaker 2: be more than, okay, well, he could be here next year.
- 28:47Speaker 2: He's got to be able to contribute if someone got hurt.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Because guys are in front of him, I just didn't
- 28:52Speaker 2: see it.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Yeah, that's why I didn't think 11 was normal either.
- 28:58Speaker 1: It's rare, but I had them uh, waving the rookie
- 29:02Speaker 1: guard out of Georgia, Micah Morris, who didn't start a
- 29:06Speaker 1: whole lot. I mean, when you're drafted in the sixth
- 29:07Speaker 1: or seventh round, a lot of teams see you as
- 29:11Speaker 1: a priority free agent as well. So, I mean, he
- 29:13Speaker 1: only started, he's had very few starts at Georgia. Um,
- 29:16Speaker 1: it's a, it's a risk, but tackles man. And the
- 29:20Speaker 1: fact that they showed what they were doing with him
- 29:21Speaker 1: so early in camp made me think that they really
- 29:23Speaker 1: liked this guy.
- 29:24Speaker 2: So we'll see. Yeah.
- 29:26Speaker 1: I mean, they do like him, but, and then he'll
- 29:27Speaker 1: be back on the practice squad.
- 29:28Speaker 2: If, if, uh, Well, he would have to go through waivers,
- 29:32Speaker 2: so you don't hope that he would pass that. He's
- 29:36Speaker 2: the toughest one. Both defense and offense, he's the one.
- 29:40Speaker 2: that took me like five, ten minutes to just make
- 29:42Speaker 2: a decision already. Then I would make my decision and
- 29:43Speaker 2: I had him off. Right.
- 29:45Speaker 1: So we didn't really struggle with the Miles Hintons of
- 29:47Speaker 1: the world, the Cameron Williams. It wasn't really... Jake Majors,
- 29:52Speaker 1: I gave some thought to Adam, but because he's played
- 29:54Speaker 1: well and you could say he arguably deserves it, but
- 29:57Speaker 1: if you've got Kendall, who's a guard center, if you've
- 30:00Speaker 1: got Willie Lampkin, who's a guard center, if you've got
- 30:02Speaker 1: Markel Bell, who can play some right guard, cross-train him
- 30:05Speaker 1: there a little bit, I believe, then I just don't
- 30:08Speaker 1: think that there was a need for another interior offensive line.
- 30:13Speaker 1: I mean, especially if you think you can get him
- 30:15Speaker 1: back easily on the practice squad.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Yeah, this is where it was either going to be,
- 30:19Speaker 2: I'll tell you, it was either him, Majors made it,
- 30:22Speaker 2: or Michael Morris had just took the drafted player. Would
- 30:24Speaker 2: not surprise me at all if it gets flipped by Hallie.
- 30:26Speaker 2: It wouldn't even, like, It'll be one of the least
- 30:30Speaker 2: surprising things that happened. I just felt that here's a
- 30:33Speaker 2: developmental guard. They knew what was wrong when they drafted them,
- 30:35Speaker 2: give them time. So there you go. All right.
- 30:38Speaker 1: So that's we moved to defense. All right. And by
- 30:42Speaker 1: the way, just for those who are not watching and listening,
- 30:45Speaker 1: I had 25 on offense out of a 26.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Okay.
- 30:47Speaker 1: So now we're on defense. You like these visuals?
- 30:51Speaker 2: I know you're, you're very cool. Oh, wow. Wow. I am.
- 30:57Speaker 2: I didn't see, yeah, we purposely did not send ours
- 31:00Speaker 2: to each other. Right. Well, I had to set it
- 31:02Speaker 2: right before we taped this so Jeff could make the visual. I, wow, too.
- 31:06Speaker 2: I'm sorry, guys. You know, see, this is where, defense
- 31:10Speaker 2: is harder than I thought it would be. Yep.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Yep, I agree.
- 31:14Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, let's get started.
- 31:15Speaker 1: All right, so why Adam is saying wow, we'll start
- 31:17Speaker 1: off with Edge. I have six, he has five. You
- 31:20Speaker 1: can guess who the top five are. Hunt, Smith, Grenard, Evachetti,
- 31:23Speaker 1: and Epinesa. I did keep Joshua Rue. I sort of
- 31:27Speaker 1: went against conventional. This is, again, the whole organizational philosophy
- 31:30Speaker 1: versus talent. I mean, the guy flashed a lot of athletic.
- 31:33Speaker 1: You know he's an athletic freak of nature. He's an edge.
- 31:37Speaker 1: He's not going to contribute at all. But I don't
- 31:40Speaker 1: think the Eagles want to expose him. So I kept him.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Yeah, to me, he did flash some. He's well ahead
- 31:51Speaker 2: of Bernard. But Bernard, they knew. was a developmental player
- 31:54Speaker 2: who would not play year one for any reason. He's
- 31:56Speaker 2: just not going to be ready to contribute at all.
- 31:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 31:59Speaker 2: But because of the rules, you have, they count against
- 32:04Speaker 2: the 53 in the fall, which it shouldn't do, but that,
- 32:07Speaker 2: that the opposite should be true, but it's not the
- 32:10Speaker 2: way that they set this up for international players. And
- 32:12Speaker 2: now if they sneak, if you get them through waivers, yes,
- 32:14Speaker 2: you could have an additional 17th player as your international player.
- 32:20Speaker 2: And because you're, you, you have to, Designate two, just
- 32:25Speaker 2: overall in general. But when you get them for waivers,
- 32:27Speaker 2: only one could go to the practice squad as the
- 32:30Speaker 2: 17th player. So, yeah, I just felt like, okay, after
- 32:35Speaker 2: the season, let's extrapolate why you would keep Waitrose. Hunt
- 32:40Speaker 2: is going to be here a long time. Year three,
- 32:43Speaker 2: this is his breakout season. Smith, they picked up his
- 32:47Speaker 2: fifth-year option. He could be here a while. Well, Garnard...
- 32:51Speaker 2: He'll be here for two years, at least, of his deal,
- 32:53Speaker 2: because they guaranteed the first two years. Ebukedi's in a
- 32:56Speaker 2: one-year deal. Epinesa's in a one-year deal. Weiru, to me,
- 33:00Speaker 2: is still like, I don't know that he'll ever contribute.
- 33:03Speaker 2: I couldn't make the case for it. No. And when
- 33:07Speaker 2: we get to defensive backs, specifically corner, it gets interesting.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Defensive tackle. Yeah, Ty Robinson... They finally got, and Vic
- 33:18Speaker 2: talked about what they were hoping from him. He was
- 33:20Speaker 2: phenomenal in two preseason games. Train camp, you couldn't make
- 33:23Speaker 2: the case for him to be on the team. He
- 33:24Speaker 2: did nothing. He literally, last summer, super raw, only played
- 33:30Speaker 2: when he had to play, when they were down in
- 33:32Speaker 2: numbers with the Carter situation. Now they've got Byron Young's
- 33:36Speaker 2: a stud. He's their top defensive tackle. He was never
- 33:38Speaker 2: challenged in camp. And now Robinson, I'll be interested to
- 33:43Speaker 2: see if the Eagles get any calls on Ty Robinson.
- 33:46Speaker 2: because this tape was really intriguing. Now, if you're the
- 33:49Speaker 2: Eagles past the season, Jomo's up. As of now, he's
- 33:53Speaker 2: up unless they extend. Byron Young's up. He literally could
- 33:57Speaker 2: be the first guy off the bench next season if
- 34:01Speaker 2: he's here. It's interesting.
- 34:02Speaker 1: I was wondering if the Eagles would get calls on
- 34:04Speaker 1: Byron Young because he's a little older. He's proved a
- 34:06Speaker 1: little bit more. He's now entering his second year.
- 34:10Speaker 2: There's no way I'm moving him. There's no way because.
- 34:12Speaker 1: You wouldn't move him because you're– yeah.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Yeah. Robinson's not ready. Again, it's what the coaches always
- 34:17Speaker 2: think this way. What happens if? If Ojomo, Davis, and
- 34:21Speaker 2: Carter get hurt, what are you going to do? If
- 34:24Speaker 2: you trade Young, you're not going with Ty Robinson. It's
- 34:28Speaker 2: nice against backup players in the preseason. He looked great.
- 34:32Speaker 2: But you ask yourself, do you think he's ready to
- 34:34Speaker 2: be a starter? The answer is obviously not. Young can
- 34:37Speaker 2: and has to.
- 34:37Speaker 1: Yep, you're right. Vic said that. I was just about
- 34:39Speaker 1: to point out, you're echoing the sentiment that Vic said.
- 34:42Speaker 1: Vic was asked about him, and Vic said, hey, look,
- 34:43Speaker 1: it's nice that he's come alive and he's off life
- 34:45Speaker 1: support and all that, but he said now it's got
- 34:48Speaker 1: to show that he can do it against first-teamers. So
- 34:51Speaker 1: he's clearly, you know, he's clearly making it obvious that
- 34:57Speaker 1: Robinson has improved, but still has ways to go to
- 35:00Speaker 1: really get in the good graces there.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's good they show the development, like they
- 35:05Speaker 2: needed to see it, and they did. Right.
- 35:07Speaker 1: OK, so we all kept we both kept the six ideals.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Carter Davis, a Jomo Young, Robinson and Bernard. And let's see.
- 35:15Speaker 1: Let's go on to inside linebacker. I listen to Vic.
- 35:19Speaker 1: Vic says put put chance on your. He said to
- 35:21Speaker 1: the reporters, if you're doing your list, put Chance Campbell
- 35:23Speaker 1: on it. So I did because Vic doesn't really lie.
- 35:26Speaker 1: So he's on my list. And you have the top four. Bond, Campbell, Trotter, Mondon,
- 35:32Speaker 1: but did not.
- 35:33Speaker 2: So you have five ILBs. See, this is where.
- 35:37Speaker 1: Again, fluid initial.
- 35:38Speaker 2: I know. Chance would be subject to waivers if they
- 35:43Speaker 2: cut him. This is, to me, a practice squad guy. Now,
- 35:48Speaker 2: could he... Let me ask you this. Well, see, you
- 35:51Speaker 2: have Mondin and Campbell on the roster. They did it
- 35:55Speaker 2: initially because the Deems come back from entry last year.
- 36:00Speaker 2: You don't have that situation anymore? I just can't make
- 36:03Speaker 2: the case for it.
- 36:05Speaker 1: The only case you can make, Adam, is that you're
- 36:07Speaker 1: not going to get– usually you have an edge defender.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Your last edge defender is usually a guy who's going
- 36:11Speaker 1: to really help you on special teams. Like who's the guy?
- 36:15Speaker 1: Patrick Johnson we talked about. The other guy, Kyron Johnson
- 36:20Speaker 1: a couple years ago. because they're twitchy, they're fast, and
- 36:24Speaker 1: you don't have that. I don't think Waru, if they
- 36:26Speaker 1: keep him, is going to do that. Certainly not Bernard, right?
- 36:29Speaker 1: So I felt like they needed a little extra on
- 36:31Speaker 1: special teams, and he's a really good special teamer for them, Campbell.
- 36:35Speaker 2: It's a guy they're going to want to have one
- 36:36Speaker 2: way or the other. Guys have shown up in training camp,
- 36:38Speaker 2: but it's kind of overkill to have five guys, and
- 36:41Speaker 2: Smile Monon is only a special teamer. Correct. But that
- 36:44Speaker 2: was it. I did struggle a little bit with him,
- 36:47Speaker 2: but I felt there were just too many guys there.
- 36:51Speaker 1: All right, and now we get to the boring part
- 36:53Speaker 1: of the show because we basically saw the same at
- 36:55Speaker 1: cornerback and safety and.
- 36:59Speaker 2: Nickel.
- 36:59Speaker 1: I think you could use the word begrudgingly in doing this, right?
- 37:03Speaker 1: Jonathan Jones, Keely Ringo, and Mack McWilliams are both of
- 37:07Speaker 1: our three bench guys behind Woolen and Mitchell and begrudgingly. Again,
- 37:11Speaker 1: initial 53. I wouldn't be surprised if this changed as
- 37:15Speaker 1: they try to maneuver the roster a little bit. in
- 37:19Speaker 1: the 48 to 72 hours after the initial one. Um,
- 37:22Speaker 1: safety though, I think that that's pretty safety slash nickel
- 37:25Speaker 1: is pretty set with the gene Macuba EPS Carter. Got
- 37:29Speaker 1: to feel pretty good about that. Uh, I think Sam
- 37:32Speaker 1: is a guy you can be comfortably bring back on,
- 37:34Speaker 1: on the practice squad. I really, I, I thought about, um,
- 37:37Speaker 1: not pulley. I actually thought, um, the other one goose chicken, right.
- 37:42Speaker 1: Has actually looked a little bit more active, just noticed
- 37:45Speaker 1: him a little bit more at practice. Um, But, again,
- 37:48Speaker 1: I think that they can get him pretty easily on
- 37:50Speaker 1: the practice squad. I wouldn't be worried about, you know,
- 37:52Speaker 1: exposing him to waivers.
- 37:54Speaker 2: Here's where I struggled. Mack McWilliams, I know Vic finally
- 37:57Speaker 2: spoke well of him. Yeah. He just is, he's just,
- 38:02Speaker 2: there's something missing there with him. He's just, because I
- 38:05Speaker 2: know he's a pretty competitive kid, really liked in the
- 38:08Speaker 2: scouting community prior to last year's draft out of Central Florida.
- 38:11Speaker 2: But he hasn't been that guy yet. And he's got,
- 38:16Speaker 2: he could play nickel, he could play corner. Gushikin, to me,
- 38:19Speaker 2: has been better, but here's the problem. He's not a corner.
- 38:21Speaker 2: He's a nickel or a safety. Special teams value. I've
- 38:26Speaker 2: got Mack over Gushikin. If the reverse was done, that
- 38:29Speaker 2: wouldn't surprise me, but again, they need corners. Now, this is,
- 38:32Speaker 2: as you said, the initial 53. I'd be absolutely shocked
- 38:37Speaker 2: if they don't have a veteran corner out here on
- 38:39Speaker 2: at least the 69-man roster, a.k.a. the practice squad, within
- 38:43Speaker 2: the first three or four weeks. I just can't see
- 38:47Speaker 2: how they think With Jonathan Jones at 33 years old,
- 38:52Speaker 2: this training camp hurt last year with Washington. Who knows
- 38:56Speaker 2: how good of a player he could be at this point?
- 38:59Speaker 2: If Mitchell, Woolen get hurt, they're out a bit, Jones starts,
- 39:05Speaker 2: they only have one choice internally. You're either moving Koop
- 39:08Speaker 2: back to corner or you're signing somebody. And Vic clearly
- 39:15Speaker 2: feels that Koop is better at safety than corner. Better
- 39:18Speaker 2: nickel than corner. We won't be doing this. You don't
- 39:20Speaker 2: just do it and wake up and say, I want
- 39:22Speaker 2: to do this. You have a reason to do it.
- 39:23Speaker 2: Of course. He's made it clear that if they have to,
- 39:26Speaker 2: they'll move him back. But this is a problem. The cornerback,
- 39:30Speaker 2: depth is a problem that it's, it's an issue. And
- 39:34Speaker 2: I'm putting Mac McWilliams on now, but there's a, it
- 39:38Speaker 2: would not surprise me after six o'clock Eastern, which you'd
- 39:43Speaker 2: let people know six Eastern is the initial 53 man number.
- 39:48Speaker 2: Wouldn't surprise me. After that on Monday, after waivers run
- 39:53Speaker 2: at 1 p.m. Eastern, when clubs go, because they have
- 39:57Speaker 2: to clear rosters out to bring in, to claim players.
- 40:02Speaker 2: So just after everything clears, it would not surprise me
- 40:05Speaker 2: if the Eagles had a veteran one way or the other.
- 40:07Speaker 1: I agree.
- 40:08Speaker 2: You got to be careful.
- 40:09Speaker 1: I think there could be as many as three to
- 40:11Speaker 1: four changes on the initial 53 from the next 53.
- 40:15Speaker 1: And then, you know, once you get closer to week
- 40:17Speaker 1: one and past that, All bets are off. I mean,
- 40:19Speaker 1: the whole 53 could look a whole lot different. For
- 40:23Speaker 1: those asking who are watching on YouTube, if you're wondering
- 40:25Speaker 1: why I put some names at the last names are
- 40:28Speaker 1: in green, those are just ones that I was weighing
- 40:31Speaker 1: back and forth and just sort of like my bottom
- 40:35Speaker 1: five or six that could have been interchangeable with some
- 40:38Speaker 1: other guys. The only reason I put McWilliams on, Adam,
- 40:43Speaker 1: to your point, is because Vic basically said he's in
- 40:47Speaker 1: the top five for corners. if I would have not
- 40:50Speaker 1: kept them on, I probably would have went with Micah
- 40:53Speaker 1: Morris as another.
- 40:54Speaker 2: Oh, that's what you would have. Oh, I didn't know that.
- 40:56Speaker 1: That was my, that was my final difficult, but like
- 41:00Speaker 1: how I was seeing it. So it was one offensive
- 41:03Speaker 1: player for a defensive player, actually.
- 41:05Speaker 2: So my one question to you would be the year
- 41:10Speaker 2: that Josh Sills made it, which I mean, I just
- 41:13Speaker 2: was like, how the hell did we miss that one? Right.
- 41:15Speaker 2: I was like, I mean, I'm sure nobody had them
- 41:18Speaker 2: on there, I would think, who was doing these things.
- 41:21Speaker 2: Is there anyone like a Jose Ramirez? Now, if Grenard is,
- 41:26Speaker 2: if they move him to reserve PUP, that means he's
- 41:29Speaker 2: got to miss four games at a minimum. They would
- 41:32Speaker 2: have a spot open. Is there a spot for, let
- 41:35Speaker 2: me give you a couple of names here. We mentioned
- 41:39Speaker 2: Kapina Gushikin, our guy Maximus Pulley, Carl Wesneski, who's come
- 41:45Speaker 2: back yet from another injury.
- 41:46Speaker 1: Boy, that would be a real– if they kept Cole,
- 41:49Speaker 1: that's just like Howie keeping a draft pick or thinking
- 41:53Speaker 1: that if you gave him more time, that's just tough.
- 41:58Speaker 2: I hear you.
- 41:59Speaker 1: Who's going to claim him off waivers after he– Probably not.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Yeah. Probably not. I got two more for you.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Okay.
- 42:06Speaker 2: Gabe Hall showed up in the preseason.
- 42:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought about him for a second.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Yep, yep. Any chance about Zion Wilson? I mean, it's
- 42:13Speaker 2: like how many D tackles are you going to keep?
- 42:16Speaker 1: Yeah you never play yeah yeah i mean you've already
- 42:19Speaker 1: got two developmental tackles in robinson and or bernard and
- 42:24Speaker 1: but i get bernard's development is years from years but
- 42:27Speaker 1: i just you know you start to get into seven
- 42:29Speaker 1: dts which they did once if we we had so
- 42:32Speaker 1: much fun with that then they wind up trading um
- 42:35Speaker 1: the guy to the falcons i can't remember his name
- 42:37Speaker 1: uh contavious street right right um there is always that
- 42:42Speaker 1: time where they do something that kind of shocks you,
- 42:44Speaker 1: where they go really deep in, in one position. If
- 42:47Speaker 1: it were, I guess it would be maybe going with that, uh,
- 42:51Speaker 1: 11th offensive lineman. I mean, you and I both have 10,
- 42:54Speaker 1: just a different 10. The thing about Sills, Adam was
- 42:57Speaker 1: he was six, six, what? Three 30 or something like
- 43:00Speaker 1: he was a tall, big dude. He even had like
- 43:03Speaker 1: Todd Harriman dimensions. Uh, And that's kind of where I
- 43:07Speaker 1: guess I'm going with Wuru, just like athletic traits that
- 43:10Speaker 1: you just keep and you hope you develop. There's nobody
- 43:14Speaker 1: that I left off that I think is just so athletic.
- 43:18Speaker 1: I guess maybe Micah Morris would be. That's why I
- 43:20Speaker 1: said maybe you would go 11 with the project.
- 43:21Speaker 2: Yeah. Right. There are going to be some surprises here
- 43:25Speaker 2: because this is special teams value, whether you think you
- 43:30Speaker 2: could sneak the guy through the practice squad. So just
- 43:32Speaker 2: to give you an idea, I took a little deeper
- 43:34Speaker 2: this year. My practice squad would be? Cole Payton, if
- 43:37Speaker 2: he clears. Damian Pierce, veteran exception. That's the term that's
- 43:43Speaker 2: used by clubs. Elijah Moore, veteran exception. Eric Ezekama, who's
- 43:49Speaker 2: subject to waivers. You know, he showed up a little bit.
- 43:51Speaker 2: He also was returning kicks. Cam Latu, if he clears.
- 43:55Speaker 2: Cam Williams, if he clears. Michael Jordan, vested veteran. He
- 43:59Speaker 2: just hasn't shown me enough. Ujuku, if he clears. Gabe Hall,
- 44:03Speaker 2: if he clears. Zion Wilson, if he clears. Deontay Lawson,
- 44:06Speaker 2: if he clears. Chance Campbell, if he clears. Gushakin, if
- 44:09Speaker 2: he clears and doesn't make the team. Maximus Poole, if
- 44:12Speaker 2: he clears. Wisniewski, excuse me. And Josh Waberu would be
- 44:17Speaker 2: the 17th guy. He would be my exception. He's the
- 44:23Speaker 2: 17th guy. And they've got a couple spots open here
- 44:25Speaker 2: as well. We'll see how it shakes out. The good
- 44:27Speaker 2: thing is, going through all this, they have a lot
- 44:30Speaker 2: of interesting developmental players you just don't have room for.
- 44:33Speaker 1: Right.
- 44:34Speaker 2: Right.
- 44:34Speaker 1: I think I would do everything you did on the
- 44:37Speaker 1: practice squad. Obviously, you have Elijah Moore and Ajuku. Mine
- 44:40Speaker 1: would be Britton Covey and Micah Morris. But I probably
- 44:44Speaker 1: would try to keep another tight end. I might try
- 44:47Speaker 1: to keep– I thought Stone Smart actually looked like he
- 44:49Speaker 1: could catch the ball a little bit, get open a
- 44:51Speaker 1: little bit. So it would either be between him or
- 44:53Speaker 1: EJ Jenkins. I would probably keep on. And so who
- 44:57Speaker 1: would I get rid of? I'm not quite sure. Maybe
- 45:01Speaker 1: Zion Wilson. Maybe– Wisniewski, I might not bring back just
- 45:06Speaker 1: because I don't think he could stay healthy. But everybody
- 45:08Speaker 1: else you had, Deontay Lawson, Kuchikian for sure, Pulley for sure.
- 45:12Speaker 1: I had Campbell on already. Hall for sure. And yeah,
- 45:17Speaker 1: so that would be my only one. And you have
- 45:19Speaker 1: Woru here getting the international exemption. I think I would
- 45:22Speaker 1: just need one more tight end.
- 45:24Speaker 2: Yeah, well, Jenkins could be on the practice squad. But
- 45:26Speaker 2: here's the thing with Underwood, you have him cutting him.
- 45:28Speaker 2: He's not vested. He's an undrafted rookie. Subject to waivers. Now,
- 45:33Speaker 2: I think you're gambling it. No one will claim him.
- 45:36Speaker 1: I'm also thinking like there'll be someone cut that's probably
- 45:39Speaker 1: got some NFL experience. Yeah.
- 45:42Speaker 2: Well, yeah, you hate to do it late. You hate
- 45:47Speaker 2: to do it this late, but that would be interesting
- 45:49Speaker 2: if they did that.
- 45:50Speaker 1: Well, here's the thing. I am almost of the mindset
- 45:53Speaker 1: that you can bring Underwood right onto your practice squad.
- 45:58Speaker 1: I don't think that'll be an issue. And then still
- 46:00Speaker 1: get a veteran.
- 46:00Speaker 2: No one will claim him, you mean. Okay.
- 46:02Speaker 1: Right, correct. And then you get a veteran, and if
- 46:06Speaker 1: you're not happy with Underwood after three elevations, you go
- 46:10Speaker 1: to the veteran.
- 46:11Speaker 2: He's there.
- 46:11Speaker 1: He's been practicing. He's been competing nonetheless. And if you
- 46:17Speaker 1: are happy with Underwood, then you sign him. At that point,
- 46:19Speaker 1: there'll be an injury. There'll be a way to get
- 46:20Speaker 1: him on the 53 that somebody else will go to
- 46:23Speaker 1: the practice squad. We see that all the time.
- 46:27Speaker 2: Yes, yeah. There'll be a veteran who's cut. Charlie Hewlett,
- 46:31Speaker 2: by the way, retired. It's going to be interesting to
- 46:36Speaker 2: see what happens because they're always a surprise or two. Yep.
- 46:40Speaker 2: And just remember, special teams value, that's where the ties go.
- 46:43Speaker 2: They go to that guy. Yep. I would be floored
- 46:46Speaker 2: if they cut Ringo just because he's so good at that.
- 46:50Speaker 2: I know you don't want him out there as a corner.
- 46:52Speaker 2: There is an opportunity. I'm going to be fascinated to
- 46:54Speaker 2: see how he does at corner.
- 46:56Speaker 1: Well, let me ask you this. Would you be floored
- 46:57Speaker 1: if they tried to trade him, though? I don't know
- 47:01Speaker 1: who would want him, but. Yeah, I mean, as much
- 47:03Speaker 1: as we get down on Ringo, he's had an improved camp,
- 47:06Speaker 1: and cornerback play depth around the NFL is pretty bad.
- 47:09Speaker 2: I know.
- 47:10Speaker 1: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
- 47:15Speaker 1: long lines, we've all been there. But when it comes
- 47:17Speaker 1: to your cannabis... Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is
- 47:22Speaker 1: the dispensary for sports fans. Just minutes outside of Philly

- 48:11Speaker 2: Well you know and he knows look as much again
- 48:13Speaker 2: you don't want him out he doesn't know if he
- 48:14Speaker 2: has to play At least he knows the match system. Yeah.
- 48:18Speaker 2: And by the way, Ja'Cory Bennett, he just didn't get–
- 48:22Speaker 2: he's hurt now, but he didn't get the match system.
- 48:25Speaker 2: He never took advantage of the opportunity. He was given–
- 48:29Speaker 2: I mean, literally, they were handing him the fourth corner spot. Right.
- 48:32Speaker 2: Which is very important. Yep. And he just never got it.
- 48:35Speaker 2: And it's too bad. And he's on the final year
- 48:38Speaker 2: of his rookie deal. It's too bad. Yeah.
- 48:41Speaker 1: I just went through the roster really quickly to see
- 48:43Speaker 1: if there's anybody like, you know, a quiz. No, there
- 48:47Speaker 1: was just no one. Danny gray. Just, he actually stayed healthy,
- 48:50Speaker 1: but he still, he didn't, we just didn't see the
- 48:52Speaker 1: deep shots to Danny gray. In fact, the whole camp,
- 48:55Speaker 1: we didn't really see a whole lot of driving the
- 48:58Speaker 1: ball down the field. He could, he could come back
- 49:02Speaker 1: on the practice squad. Possibly we'll see. It's just trying to,
- 49:05Speaker 1: you mentioned your Corey and Bennett. It's an interesting, cause
- 49:07Speaker 1: you know, they did trade a day three pick for him, but,
- 49:09Speaker 1: Like you said, never got the system. Ambry Thomas and
- 49:14Speaker 1: Sean Wade. I think we at least got the guys
- 49:17Speaker 1: that either deserve to be on the practice squad or
- 49:20Speaker 1: the 53. There might be a surprise. There was always
- 49:22Speaker 1: a surprise.
- 49:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:25Speaker 1: Ramirez is interesting, right? Because he's got some twitchiness to him.
- 49:29Speaker 1: Jose Ramirez is a little bit of an interesting guy.
- 49:31Speaker 2: Yeah, he's just small. So the timeline to finish this off,
- 49:34Speaker 2: 6 p.m. Eastern on Sunday. I don't remember the last
- 49:37Speaker 2: time that this deadline, the initial 53s, 6 p.m. Eastern, Monday,
- 49:41Speaker 2: 1 p.m. Eastern, waivers run. Within the next hour, practice
- 49:46Speaker 2: squads could be set, which are super fluid. No team
- 49:50Speaker 2: in the history of national football, I'm sure, has ever
- 49:52Speaker 2: kept the same guys from week one to now week 18.
- 49:56Speaker 2: But anyway, that's it. We'll see what happens. It was fun.
- 50:00Speaker 2: You can see how we struggled.
- 50:01Speaker 1: It was interesting. It lent itself to really good football
- 50:05Speaker 1: conversation and roster construction conversation. That's going to do it
- 50:08Speaker 1: for this episode of Inside the Birds, the leading podcast
