- Lucas: Luna, welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo! Episode one eighty-seven. How's your week going? Luna: Hey Lucas! It's going well, thanks. I've been practicing those prepositions from last episode, over and door. I even said 'Ik fiets door het park' to myself this morning. Lucas: That's awesome! You're already using them in real life. Today, we've got two more prepositions that are super useful for describing locations: tegenover and langs. Luna: Tegenover... langs... Okay, I'm ready. What do they mean? Lucas: Tegenover means 'opposite' or 'across from.' So if something is directly across the street, you'd say het is tegenover. And langs means 'along' or 'past.' Like walking along a river, or going past a building. Luna: Oh, I can think of situations for both. Let's hear them in sentences. Lucas: First one: Het is tegenover het station. That means 'It's opposite the station.' Repeat after me: Het is tegenover het station. Luna: Het is tegenover het station. Het is tegenover het station. That feels smooth. The 'g' in tegenover is a bit rough, but I think I got it. Lucas: Your 'g' is solid! Second one: Loop langs de kerk. That means 'Walk past the church.' Loop langs de kerk. Luna: Loop langs de kerk. Loop langs de kerk. So langs is like 'along' or 'past'? And it goes with lopen? Lucas: Exactly. You can also say 'Ik fiets langs het park' — I cycle past the park. Let's practice a third: De supermarkt is tegenover het park. The supermarket is opposite the park. Luna: De supermarkt is tegenover het park. So if I'm at the park and I need groceries, I just cross the street? Lucas: Exactly! Let's do a quick scene. Imagine you're giving directions. Someone asks: 'Waar is de bibliotheek?' You say: 'Het is tegenover het station.' Then you add: 'Loop langs de kerk en dan links.' How would you say that? Luna: Umm... 'Het is tegenover het station. Loop langs de kerk en dan links.' Did I get that right? Lucas: Perfect! See, you're already giving directions in Dutch. Let's do a little role-play. I'll be a tourist asking for the museum. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. Ask me. Lucas: Excuseer, waar is het museum? Luna: Het is tegenover het park. Loop langs de kerk en dan rechts. Lucas: Excellent! You used both prepositions naturally. Now, let's hear them again. Repeat after me: tegenover. Luna: Tegenover. Lucas: Langs. Luna: Langs. Lucas: Het is tegenover het station. Luna: Het is tegenover het station. Lucas: Loop langs de kerk. Luna: Loop langs de kerk. Lucas: De supermarkt is tegenover het park. Luna: De supermarkt is tegenover het park. Lucas: You know, if Fexingo has been helping you make real progress with Dutch, we want to keep these episodes free and without ads. That's important to us. Luna: Yeah, I love that we don't have commercials interrupting. It makes learning feel more like a conversation. And every bit of support goes straight into making more episodes for you. Lucas: Exactly. So, back to our prepositions. Let's try one more example: 'Het café is tegenover de bioscoop.' The café is opposite the cinema. You try. Luna: Het café is tegenover de bioscoop. That's a good one. So if I want to meet a friend, I can say 'Ik sta tegenover de bioscoop'? Lucas: Yes! Or 'Ik loop langs de bioscoop.' Both work. Let's do a quick review. What does tegenover mean? Luna: Opposite or across from. Lucas: And langs? Luna: Along or past. Lucas: Great! And how do you say 'Walk past the church'? Luna: Loop langs de kerk. Lucas: Perfect. And 'It's opposite the station'? Luna: Het is tegenover het station. Lucas: Wonderful. You've got it. Practice these two prepositions this week. Try describing where things are in your neighborhood using tegenover and langs. Luna: I will! I'll start with my local supermarket. Thanks Lucas, this was fun. Lucas: Thanks for learning with us on Fexingo. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time!
