Latest / AFR Saints / RECAP: Commanders 20, Saints 19 | Can Darren Rizzi Earn Full-Time Head Coach Job?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Twenty to nineteen. You win it or you lose it.
- 0:04Speaker 1: One play, Rattler rolls who was right now, throws and
- 0:07Speaker 1: complete and complete in the corner of the end.
- 0:12Speaker 2: We walk off the field with a loss. But I
- 0:14Speaker 2: don't know if I've ever been more proud of the team.
- 0:15Speaker 2: So it's a certainly a mixed bag there. We did
- 0:19Speaker 2: not play the game we wanted to play in the
- 0:20Speaker 2: first half. That's that's a little bit obvious. You know,
- 0:23Speaker 2: we had one first down and we had we had
- 0:25Speaker 2: fourteen total plays and I wasn't all on the quarterback.
- 0:28Speaker 2: You know, we felt like we needed to make a
- 0:30Speaker 2: change there at halftime. We did. Spencer did a great job,
- 0:32Speaker 2: came in and provide some spark. But not only that.
- 0:34Speaker 2: We played. You know, we only gave up six points
- 0:37Speaker 2: in the second half, which gave us a chance to win.
- 0:39Speaker 2: But as I just told the team, you know, we
- 0:41Speaker 2: needed one more play and unfortunately we dug too big
- 0:43Speaker 2: of a hole there in the first half.
- 0:47Speaker 3: It was all on the quarterback, and that's why you
- 0:49Speaker 3: made the change at halftime.
- 0:51Speaker 1: He's not gonna say it.
- 0:52Speaker 3: I get it because he's the head coach of the team,
- 0:54Speaker 3: and he's certainly not gonna gonna, you know, pin it
- 0:58Speaker 3: on one player. And I completely understand and respect that
- 1:01Speaker 3: he's not worried about what you or I think he's
- 1:03Speaker 3: worried about maintaining his locker room and the confidence of
- 1:05Speaker 3: the team and all that sort of stuff. And again
- 1:07Speaker 3: I get it and I respect it. But Jay Caner
- 1:10Speaker 3: was atrocious. He was atrocious. The decision to start Jay
- 1:13Speaker 3: Caner cost you a football game, period period. Your defense.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Your defense sacked jayde and Daniels eight times. You held
- 1:21Speaker 3: Washington to twenty points, Rattler rallied in the second half,
- 1:25Speaker 3: you got a few breaks, they missed a field goal
- 1:27Speaker 3: fifty four yarder that would have basically put it out
- 1:29Speaker 3: of reach, but you lost because of the decision to
- 1:34Speaker 3: start Jay Caneer.
- 1:34Speaker 1: He was atrocious.
- 1:36Speaker 3: I like, I literally I could have been as effective
- 1:39Speaker 3: as Jay Caner. I mean, you ran fourteen plays in
- 1:42Speaker 3: the first half, you were shut out. You can't do
- 1:46Speaker 3: worse than being shut out. What an incredibly emotionally conflicting game.
- 1:56Speaker 3: I did not expect the New Orleans Saints to win
- 1:58Speaker 3: that game. I picked against him. I thought it would
- 2:00Speaker 3: be one sided, and for a half it was one sided.
- 2:04Speaker 3: The New Orleans Saints had thirty eight yards of offense
- 2:07Speaker 3: in the first half, thirty eight net yards of offense
- 2:13Speaker 3: throughout the course of that those three hours on Sunday,
- 2:17Speaker 3: I felt all of the emotions.
- 2:21Speaker 1: It was.
- 2:23Speaker 3: It was embarrassing watching the first half, where you ran
- 2:28Speaker 3: fourteen offensive plays. Jay Hayner was anemic. You had thirty
- 2:34Speaker 3: eight yards of offense at the end of the first half.
- 2:37Speaker 3: That's embarrassing to watch. It was encouraging watching the defense,
- 2:44Speaker 3: wasn't it. I mean, that's a defense that was on
- 2:47Speaker 3: the field for forty one minutes sixty minute game. Your
- 2:52Speaker 3: defense was out there for forty one minutes and they
- 2:55Speaker 3: held a really dynamic offense to twenty points. You got
- 3:01Speaker 3: eight sacks. How about the Mario Davis playing his ass off?
- 3:07Speaker 1: How old is the Mario Davis? Do we have to
- 3:09Speaker 1: keep reminding ourselves of this?
- 3:10Speaker 3: I think to Mario Davis is creeping into the territory
- 3:16Speaker 3: of being my favorite New Orleans Saint of all time.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Like my youth, if I could take a brief, a
- 3:23Speaker 3: brief diversion here, Dalton Hilliard was my first ever favorite
- 3:27Speaker 3: player in anything. I'm not old enough to watch Dalton
- 3:29Speaker 3: Hilliard with LSU. But Dalton Hilliard rock in the twenty
- 3:32Speaker 3: one with the Saints was my first favorite player in
- 3:35Speaker 3: anything ever. Like I just I've done this job long
- 3:40Speaker 3: enough and been around enough coaches and athletes and celebrities
- 3:43Speaker 3: and all the stuff that you've become a little numb
- 3:45Speaker 3: to it. I would probably be starstruck if Dalton Hilliard
- 3:48Speaker 3: walked through the door right now, because he was my
- 3:50Speaker 3: first favorite. And I've still never interviewed or talked to
- 3:53Speaker 3: Dalton Hilliard. Weird that that's ever happened. You probably probably
- 3:56Speaker 3: could do that. But anyway, the Mario Davis is creeping
- 4:01Speaker 3: into that territory of being my favorite New Orleans Saint ever.
- 4:06Speaker 1: See these he thirty five, thirty.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Six, he is he forty two yet Yeah, well, when
- 4:12Speaker 3: he's forty two, he's probably still going to be wrecking dudes,
- 4:15Speaker 3: making fourteen tackles, just throwing his body out there because
- 4:18Speaker 3: he can. And he's awesome. I mean, you're talking about
- 4:22Speaker 3: a team going nowhere, organization going nowhere, and that dude
- 4:28Speaker 3: is out there at thirty five wrecking people with fourteen
- 4:31Speaker 3: frigging tackles, making every play.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I mean that was encouraging. I mean it was.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Really exciting watching Spencer Rattler in the second half. Rattler
- 4:47Speaker 3: led four scoring drives in the second half. Now, Spencer
- 4:50Speaker 3: Ratler wasn't awesome. I mean, he completed less than fifty
- 4:55Speaker 3: percent of his passes. So it's not like Spencer Ratler
- 4:59Speaker 3: went out there and looked like Josh Allen. It's not
- 5:02Speaker 3: like we were talking about an MVP caliber performance. He
- 5:07Speaker 3: was ten of twenty one for one thirty five, a
- 5:10Speaker 3: touchdown right there at the gun, and no interceptions. He
- 5:15Speaker 3: was plenty good enough, not great, but plenty good enough,
- 5:18Speaker 3: and that's encouraging. It was infuriating that you started Jake
- 5:22Speaker 3: Hander to begin with. We talked about that all last week.
- 5:28Speaker 3: It was exhilarating that you convert the fourth down as
- 5:34Speaker 3: the clock's running, Foster Morow's got to throw defenders off
- 5:37Speaker 3: of him so you can get up to the line
- 5:38Speaker 3: of scrimmage and spike it. You get the spike one
- 5:41Speaker 3: play into the end zone by a bing, by a bang,
- 5:43Speaker 3: by a boom, touchdown, Foster Moro going for two. Loved
- 5:48Speaker 3: the decision to go for two, and then of course
- 5:51Speaker 3: it was super disappointing that you weren't able to convert
- 5:53Speaker 3: and get the win. But then then again the conflicting
- 5:57Speaker 3: emotion is you're.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Like, oh, well, but the draft stuff and you lost
- 6:01Speaker 1: and whatever. I mean, I get it.
- 6:03Speaker 3: It's very emotionally conflicting three hours. But as my point
- 6:10Speaker 3: of view consistently here, as the Saints have been while
- 6:14Speaker 3: not mathematically eliminating, they're still not mathematically eliminated. They would
- 6:17Speaker 3: have to win out and you would have to have
- 6:20Speaker 3: the Bucks lose out over the final three. It's not
- 6:22Speaker 3: going to happen, but they're not mathematically eliminated. But for
- 6:27Speaker 3: as long as they have kind of been out of it,
- 6:29Speaker 3: my contention is what I am hoping to see here
- 6:33Speaker 3: over the remainder of the season is what are we
- 6:36Speaker 3: learning about this team? This is a continued audition for
- 6:39Speaker 3: Darren Rizzy. We are learning if Alante Taylor and kool
- 6:43Speaker 3: Aid McKinstry are capable of being your boundary corners. We
- 6:47Speaker 3: are continuing to watch Talisa Funga and Trevor Penning as
- 6:51Speaker 3: starting tackles in the NFL, watching Brian Berze continue to emerge.
- 6:55Speaker 3: There's a lot that we're trying to learn there with
- 6:58Speaker 3: this team as it continues to go long. But Spencer
- 7:01Speaker 3: Ratler's second half performance is one that you have to
- 7:03Speaker 3: keep in mind and acknowledge because what we're all trying
- 7:08Speaker 3: to see is like Derek Carr is not leading this
- 7:12Speaker 3: team anywhere.
- 7:14Speaker 1: I mean it.
- 7:15Speaker 3: He is what he is today, the same thing I
- 7:17Speaker 3: told you he was the day they signed him. He
- 7:20Speaker 3: is a lower mid upper bottom tier starting quarterback in
- 7:23Speaker 3: the NFL. Still makes him an elite player in the
- 7:25Speaker 3: history of the war in the world because he's capable
- 7:28Speaker 3: of being an NFL quarterback, a starting NFL quarterback.
- 7:30Speaker 1: He's just not a good one.
- 7:32Speaker 3: So you've got eleven you've got an eleven year sample,
- 7:37Speaker 3: like you are what you are eleven years.
- 7:38Speaker 1: You are what you are eleven years into your career.
- 7:41Speaker 3: So you're trying to figure out, Okay, what what's next?
- 7:45Speaker 3: Could Rattler or Hainter be that? And our whole conversation
- 7:49Speaker 3: last week about Spencer Ratler was I get that it
- 7:52Speaker 3: wasn't good those three games he started, But how many
- 7:55Speaker 3: rookie quarterbacks are good, and especially when they're playing behind
- 8:00Speaker 3: find a bubblegum and duct tape offensive line without your
- 8:04Speaker 3: best weapons. That's that's the steaming pile of dung. Spencer
- 8:07Speaker 3: Ratler was handed over those three games. At least now,
- 8:11Speaker 3: while you still have all your weapons back. At least
- 8:14Speaker 3: now he was out there behind your starting offensive line
- 8:18Speaker 3: who could actually give him time to operate.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Far from perfect, But did you see progress? I did?
- 8:25Speaker 1: Would you like to see more? I would.
- 8:28Speaker 3: I don't think it's going to go super great on
- 8:29Speaker 3: Monday Football at Lambeau if he draws the start, but
- 8:32Speaker 3: he's earned it. If Carr isn't back, how about your defense?
- 8:39Speaker 3: Eight sacks sack Jayan Daniels eight times, Chase Young two sacks,
- 8:44Speaker 3: Cam Jordan great to see two sacks.
- 8:47Speaker 1: You know, I look at Chase Young and I.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Go, is that a guy who you're going to commit
- 8:54Speaker 3: a long term deal to? Now, he may choose to
- 8:57Speaker 3: sign elsewhere after the season, maybe look to go to
- 8:59Speaker 3: a contending team, but he's proving when he's healthy he
- 9:04Speaker 3: is a menace. Two more sacks against his former team
- 9:07Speaker 3: on Sunday. Now, I think Chase Young is gonna have
- 9:09Speaker 3: a lot of shooters in free agency. But that's a
- 9:11Speaker 3: guy that Saint should certainly look at. For the game itself.
- 9:17Speaker 3: There are a couple of special teams gaffs. That's it's disappointing.
- 9:22Speaker 3: I mean, thinking about the opening if you watch the game,
- 9:24Speaker 3: if you didn't, the opening defensive possession for the Saints.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Commanders are driving and the defense comes up with a stop.
- 9:31Speaker 3: They force a field goal attempt. Washington makes it personal
- 9:36Speaker 3: foul on Peyton Turner. He contacted the head of the
- 9:40Speaker 3: long snapper, which is a personal foul, which was the
- 9:43Speaker 3: right call, but it's just a boneheaded play. Gives him
- 9:47Speaker 3: a first down. They end up scoring the touchdown. That's
- 9:49Speaker 3: a four point swing at the end of the third quarter.
- 9:55Speaker 3: This is an officiating gaff which is absolutely inexcusable. Washington's
- 10:01Speaker 3: lining up for a field goal at the end of
- 10:03Speaker 3: the third quarter. Clock running the third quarter expires, and
- 10:08Speaker 3: it's not like it was, Oh they snapped it right
- 10:10Speaker 3: when it hit zero. It was like one thousand and one,
- 10:14Speaker 3: one thousand and two, one thousand and three, one thousand,
- 10:16Speaker 3: snap it and he misses the field goal. Well after
- 10:21Speaker 3: he misses the field goal, then the officials come and say, ah,
- 10:25Speaker 3: the half expired, no try, So he gets another crack
- 10:29Speaker 3: out at the start of the fourth quarter.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Makes it.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Apparently the officials were as interested in watching that game
- 10:35Speaker 3: as the rest of us. This is seven point swing
- 10:40Speaker 3: right there. You gave him four because the penalty, and
- 10:43Speaker 3: then they got a gift to get three more. It's
- 10:45Speaker 3: your game. Either one of those plays, it's a game.
- 10:49Speaker 3: As far as the two point conversion play, Rizzy please ten,
- 10:54Speaker 3: Rizzy ten on the two point play call.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean every game you have a couple of
- 11:00Speaker 2: two plays up on the menu. I just felt like
- 11:02Speaker 2: the claim and the offensive staff felt like that was
- 11:04Speaker 2: our best call. Listen, didn't work out. It is what
- 11:07Speaker 2: it is, so phenomenal drive, getting down there in phenomenal drive,
- 11:10Speaker 2: getting us in a position to win the game. But
- 11:13Speaker 2: unfortunately didn't execute that last one.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Your five and eight football team. As a lot of
- 11:16Speaker 3: people complaining about the decision to go for two, I
- 11:18Speaker 3: have no problem with it whatsoever. I think it's one
- 11:20Speaker 3: hundred percent of the right call. I can live with
- 11:22Speaker 3: the result. Your five and eight football team, Listen, if
- 11:24Speaker 3: that was the Super Bowl, you're going to overtime. You're
- 11:29Speaker 3: a five and eight football team playing a team that's
- 11:31Speaker 3: better than you. And everyone knows the adage that the
- 11:35Speaker 3: longer a game goes like if a game goes to overtime,
- 11:38Speaker 3: it favors the favorite. The better team because you continue
- 11:42Speaker 3: playing on and they're better than you and Washington, make
- 11:45Speaker 3: no mistake, is better than New Orleans. Playing in overtime
- 11:50Speaker 3: period would have favored Washington.
- 11:52Speaker 1: In this instance. You had one play, one play, and
- 11:56Speaker 1: you have an.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Advantage on a two point conversion because you know the play,
- 11:59Speaker 3: So go run your best two point play. Washington had
- 12:02Speaker 3: had Foster or it was Juwan Johnson had him doubled incomplete.
- 12:06Speaker 3: I don't have the all twenty two, but when if
- 12:08Speaker 3: you're watching the game cut, it looked like as as
- 12:13Speaker 3: Rattler's trying to fit a ball in there. To Juwan Johnson,
- 12:16Speaker 3: it looked like Mark was Valdez Scantling was running back
- 12:19Speaker 3: toward the field and maybe it was open because they
- 12:21Speaker 3: had Juwan double cover. Maybe Rattler missed it. I don't know.
- 12:25Speaker 3: I'm not a coach. I don't know the play call.
- 12:26Speaker 3: I don't know what his reads were. It just looked
- 12:28Speaker 3: like you had a guy open in the back of
- 12:29Speaker 3: the end zone. I have no problem whatsoever with going
- 12:33Speaker 3: for two. I'm bummed it didn't work out, But the
- 12:35Speaker 3: flip side of it is, and we keep talking about
- 12:37Speaker 3: the emotional conflict here, you lost and as you're looking
- 12:42Speaker 3: toward the draft, it's probably a better thing for you
- 12:44Speaker 3: because you're not going anywhere anyway, so you're not mathematically eliminated,
- 12:49Speaker 3: but you will be by next weekend, and you know
- 12:53Speaker 3: you'll play out the string. I think this said all along.
- 12:55Speaker 3: I think the Saint's called one more winning them. I
- 12:56Speaker 3: think they'll beat the beat Las Vegas in the Dome.
- 12:59Speaker 3: I don't think you're in Green Bay on Monday night football,
- 13:01Speaker 3: and I don't think you're beating Tampa, who's going to
- 13:03Speaker 3: be playing for the division on their home field week eighteen.
- 13:06Speaker 3: But for New Orleans, there were positive things to take
- 13:09Speaker 3: out of this game, but another loss, and maybe the
- 13:14Speaker 3: thing that's going to be most consequential is continuing to
- 13:17Speaker 3: look at Darren Rizzy to see if he actually has
- 13:20Speaker 3: a legitimate shot of getting this job full time. And
- 13:23Speaker 3: I don't know that the answer to that is to
- 13:24Speaker 3: the affirmative, but he has certainly been has this team
- 13:27Speaker 3: playing better, and he's three and two, has five games.
- 13:32Speaker 1: The interim head coach three and two.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Man, I'm not saying that's incredible, but given the ingredients
- 13:37Speaker 3: he has to work with in a seven game losing
- 13:39Speaker 3: streak under Dennis Allen. He's maximizing this team and doing
- 13:43Speaker 3: it still shorthanded,
