- 0:15Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to episode one oh two of
- 0:19Speaker 1: Cards and Categories. I'm Mike Coolard from rass Ball. Joined
- 0:22Speaker 1: is always my buying very good friend. Jeremy Burer, also
- 0:25Speaker 1: from Rasball. How are you doing tonight, buddy? Is there
- 0:28Speaker 1: a head still spinning from that trade deadline?
- 0:30Speaker 2: It's yeah, it's It was a fantastic trade deadline. How
- 0:33Speaker 2: about you felt like things were flying, mostly relievers, but
- 0:37Speaker 2: it was. It was a grand old time. I love
- 0:40Speaker 2: the trade deadline. I did get a chance to do
- 0:41Speaker 2: it this year, but in the past I've actually taken
- 0:43Speaker 2: off work just to sit there and watch them ob network, Uh,
- 0:46Speaker 2: just just just for fun and just scroll on Twitter,
- 0:50Speaker 2: Blue Sky, whatever it is and just enjoy the massive
- 0:53Speaker 2: rampant rumors that never come to fruition. But it was.
- 0:57Speaker 2: It was a good time. I'm glad we got to
- 0:58Speaker 2: chat about it last week and and him it was
- 1:00Speaker 2: the gift that keeps on giving. We got more of
- 1:02Speaker 2: this week.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, it's I mean we were recording right
- 1:06Speaker 1: in the middle of some of it last week, So
- 1:09Speaker 1: if you do go back to episode one on one,
- 1:11Speaker 1: you'll kind of notice where the break was in terms
- 1:13Speaker 1: of where the trades happened because we like broke the
- 1:17Speaker 1: Michael Soroka trade to the Nats, but we had gotten
- 1:20Speaker 1: the recording done before au Heenio Suarez went back to
- 1:23Speaker 1: the MS, So we're gonna kind of tee this up.
- 1:27Speaker 1: We've got a lot to talk about this week in
- 1:29Speaker 1: terms of one the trade deadline fallout. Two Baseball still happened,
- 1:33Speaker 1: so we still had our normal kind of machinations of
- 1:37Speaker 1: trades and injuries and call ups and downs and all
- 1:40Speaker 1: sorts of stuff going on there. And then it's also
- 1:43Speaker 1: the first week of the month and here in August.
- 1:46Speaker 1: As we're recording on August sixth, that means we have
- 1:49Speaker 1: Player of the Month to cover from July. So we're
- 1:51Speaker 1: gonna do a little bit of like our typical three
- 1:54Speaker 1: act play that we revived in episode one hundred there
- 1:57Speaker 1: and it's coming back, so if you really enjoy it,
- 2:00Speaker 1: one oh two here I think is going to be
- 2:02Speaker 1: a special treat because we're going to break it down
- 2:04Speaker 1: first with some risers and followers from the fantasy perspective
- 2:07Speaker 1: from the deadline, get into the news and notes, and
- 2:10Speaker 1: then get into that Player of the Month PC. So
- 2:13Speaker 1: let's just dive right into it on the trade deadline, because,
- 2:16Speaker 1: as you alluded to, it was a very very chaotic deadline.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I think the guys at Suspectus Barbecue tracked it as
- 2:26Speaker 1: one of the heaviest, if not the heaviest trade deadlines
- 2:29Speaker 1: of all time. And that's not even like factoring in
- 2:31Speaker 1: we had Rafael Devers dealt you a month before this deadline,
- 2:34Speaker 1: who would have been easily the biggest person to move
- 2:37Speaker 1: at the deadline this year. It looks like it was
- 2:40Speaker 1: somewhere around like fifty ish trades in the last thirty
- 2:43Speaker 1: one hours, So we're not going to cover all of them.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I figured what we'd do is we would hit the
- 2:48Speaker 1: big ones, the just like Star Impact ones, and then
- 2:52Speaker 1: go through some risers and followers in general from Fantasy.
- 2:55Speaker 1: So if you're also looking for some of this coverage,
- 2:57Speaker 1: I know you wrote about it a little bit this
- 2:59Speaker 1: last weekend at Rasball. I did too at Rasball, So
- 3:02Speaker 1: certainly go over there check out our articles that have
- 3:05Speaker 1: run there. But there's just more info that's even come
- 3:09Speaker 1: out since we had our post go up on Saturday
- 3:11Speaker 1: and Sunday. In terms of watching these teams actually deploy
- 3:15Speaker 1: their new rosters out on the field, So we've got
- 3:18Speaker 1: a little more information to work off of, but like
- 3:20Speaker 1: I said, let's dive into some of these specific trades first.
- 3:23Speaker 1: So the biggest blockbuster I think we had of the
- 3:26Speaker 1: day was pretty late during the trade deadline, Carlos Korea
- 3:30Speaker 1: moving from the Minnesota Twins back to the Houston Astros.
- 3:34Speaker 1: It has been an injury riddled season for Carlos Korea,
- 3:38Speaker 1: but just a fascinating story in terms of he was
- 3:41Speaker 1: part of that trash can banging scheme along with Josel Tuvey,
- 3:47Speaker 1: really just about the only guys left with maybe a
- 3:49Speaker 1: little bit your Don Alvarez mixed in there, left from
- 3:52Speaker 1: that team. He was also kind of one of the
- 3:55Speaker 1: leaders in terms of just standing up to the media
- 3:57Speaker 1: presence and pressure posts trash can banging banging scheme fallout.
- 4:04Speaker 1: But what do you see for Korea here going to Houston.
- 4:07Speaker 1: He is filling in at third base now the Estoch
- 4:10Speaker 1: Preydas is officially out for the rest of the regular
- 4:12Speaker 1: season with the torn hamstring, but first time he's going
- 4:15Speaker 1: to be manning the hot corner as he is deferring
- 4:18Speaker 1: to Jeremy Penias still a shirt stop. Do you think
- 4:20Speaker 1: that Korea could find some new life again rejoining the
- 4:23Speaker 1: Houston Astros. Yeah, I mean, I.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Don't think that there's anything beyond adding third base eligibility
- 4:29Speaker 2: that like gives like statistically says we should see a
- 4:33Speaker 2: big boost for him. The power is not really what
- 4:39Speaker 2: it once was. He's just, I would say, a slightly
- 4:42Speaker 2: above average hitter at this point in time, like if
- 4:46Speaker 2: you look at overall season ninety eight WRC plus. I
- 4:50Speaker 2: think the bigger thing just is the mental aspect. You're
- 4:53Speaker 2: you're moving from the Twins to the only team that
- 4:56Speaker 2: he said he was willing to be moved to and
- 4:58Speaker 2: waive his note trade clause, which is basically kind of
- 5:00Speaker 2: going back home quote unquote to the Astros. And so
- 5:03Speaker 2: I think there's a little bit more intangible assessment here
- 5:07Speaker 2: that I wouldn't be shocked to see him, you know,
- 5:09Speaker 2: pick things up a little bit just because he's somewherehere,
- 5:12Speaker 2: he's comfortable with someone where he's been successful, you know,
- 5:15Speaker 2: kind of getting the band back together to a degree,
- 5:18Speaker 2: and so I think that he might see a little
- 5:21Speaker 2: bit of pick me up from that. But I don't
- 5:23Speaker 2: think that there's anything necessarily with the ballpark, which is
- 5:26Speaker 2: a better ballpark in general hit him, but I don't
- 5:28Speaker 2: think it's anything substantial where I'm shooting him away at
- 5:31Speaker 2: my rankings. But like I usually trades, I go the
- 5:33Speaker 2: other way. Like when a guy trades, like that's usually
- 5:35Speaker 2: time to move him, because like people are like all
- 5:37Speaker 2: excited about him.
- 5:38Speaker 1: This is one of the ones.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Where I'm like, I actually think he could get a
- 5:42Speaker 2: little intrinsic value just from being back in Houston, and
- 5:46Speaker 2: he might get going a little bit of hot streak here.
- 5:48Speaker 2: So I'm a little bit more excited about Carlos Korea.
- 5:51Speaker 2: It's not saying much because I wasn't terribly excited in
- 5:54Speaker 2: the first place, but I think this is really interesting
- 5:58Speaker 2: to see him go back and at the third base eligibility,
- 6:00Speaker 2: I think is a really great perk for a lot
- 6:02Speaker 2: of fantasy owners.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mean, I honestly like it makes me
- 6:05Speaker 1: a little fascinated with him from a dynasty perspective, because
- 6:09Speaker 1: if he can get back to a little bit of
- 6:11Speaker 1: that groove where he used to have, you know something
- 6:13Speaker 1: in the the mid ish twenty homers, you know, eighty
- 6:18Speaker 1: runs eighty RBI with a two seventy average. He wasn't
- 6:22Speaker 1: necessarily ever reaching those Apexes with Minnesota. I think also
- 6:25Speaker 1: partly just because it plays cold at the beginning of
- 6:27Speaker 1: the end of the season. No Crawford boxes, no familiarity.
- 6:31Speaker 1: He's already been pretty hot there. In terms of today,
- 6:34Speaker 1: roped two doubles against the Red Sox, has already popped
- 6:37Speaker 1: a homer, So we could see a little bit of
- 6:40Speaker 1: a renaissance for college Korea only thirty years old.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Yeah, you forget how young Korea is because he's been
- 6:46Speaker 2: around so so long. So yeah, I'm there with you.
- 6:49Speaker 2: There's a little there's a little bit of hope and
- 6:51Speaker 2: silver lining in this one, all right.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Well, the next biggest one was another return we had
- 6:56Speaker 1: in terms of third baseman au Heneo Suarez going from
- 7:00Speaker 1: the Dbacks back to this Seattle Mariners in exchange for
- 7:05Speaker 1: Tyler Locklear and a couple other pieces. We're gonna focus
- 7:09Speaker 1: here on Suarez, who I mean, it was an incredible
- 7:11Speaker 1: season before he left Arizona. Thirty six bombs, eighty six
- 7:15Speaker 1: eighty seven RBI over one hundred and six games with
- 7:19Speaker 1: a two forty eight average. He is going to settle
- 7:22Speaker 1: right into the middle of that Mariners lineup. But we're
- 7:25Speaker 1: gonna get into our risers and followers a little bit.
- 7:29Speaker 1: This isn't great. He was not fantastic when he was
- 7:32Speaker 1: there in Seattle over two years in twenty twenty two,
- 7:36Speaker 1: twenty twenty three, hit two, thirty four three, twenty seven,
- 7:40Speaker 1: four to twenty three slash line over two years. It's
- 7:42Speaker 1: a one eighteen WRC plus fifty three homers over this
- 7:45Speaker 1: two years, and now he's up to thirty seven this year,
- 7:47Speaker 1: so he can kind of see how that all went.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Also a little bit odd that the reason he ended
- 7:52Speaker 1: up in Arizona was a Seattle was dumping the salary
- 7:55Speaker 1: of the contract he's still on and went back to Seattle.
- 7:58Speaker 1: But I'm a little in terms of what this means
- 8:01Speaker 1: for Suarez. There's a harder ballpark to hit in. Doesn't
- 8:05Speaker 1: get to play the Rockies very often anymore in the
- 8:07Speaker 1: AO West. Are you on board there? Are you kind
- 8:10Speaker 1: of ticking Sores down a little bit? Or have the
- 8:12Speaker 1: changes he's shown over the past couple of years in
- 8:14Speaker 1: Arizona enough to override that.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I'm giving him a little bit of
- 8:20Speaker 2: the benefit of the doubt here, Like you have to
- 8:21Speaker 2: give him a little tick down right that that ballpark
- 8:24Speaker 2: is not as good to play in and he has
- 8:27Speaker 2: struggled there to a degree in the past, but like
- 8:30Speaker 2: you know, we say he struggled there. He he hit
- 8:32Speaker 2: two thirty six his first season two thirty two, and
- 8:35Speaker 2: he's hit in two forty three now. So like the
- 8:37Speaker 2: bat hmvers is basically the same. His his run production
- 8:40Speaker 2: was pretty good. He just has been on an incredible
- 8:42Speaker 2: season and so you know, twenty twenty two he hit
- 8:46Speaker 2: thirty one bombs, hit eighty seven rbi, one hundred fifty games,
- 8:49Speaker 2: like that's still a very healthy pace. And he has
- 8:53Speaker 2: made some adjustments as an overall hitter, Like his launch
- 8:56Speaker 2: angle is just like rocketed through the roof. Like career wise,
- 9:03Speaker 2: he was a seventeen eighteen degree launching guy. This this
- 9:06Speaker 2: year it's jumped four whole points and he is getting
- 9:10Speaker 2: everything out of every fly ball. So he's made some adjustment.
- 9:14Speaker 2: So I think, like if I was to say, like
- 9:16Speaker 2: give me a ninety five percent of what you Henniosuarez
- 9:19Speaker 2: was in Arizona here in Seattle, I'm comfortable with that
- 9:23Speaker 2: because you're not expecting Suarez to be this like massive
- 9:27Speaker 2: doubles machine and all these kind of things, Like he
- 9:29Speaker 2: hits bombs and they go far, and he's in the
- 9:32Speaker 2: middle of a lineup that has looked a lot better
- 9:35Speaker 2: as of late. So I'm taking them down a little bit.
- 9:38Speaker 2: But there's nothing here that's making me like move off
- 9:41Speaker 2: of the Suarez. If you have him, you'd likely got
- 9:43Speaker 2: him just as cheap as the Diamondbacks this season. So
- 9:46Speaker 2: you're still, you know, playing with house money here with you,
- 9:48Speaker 2: Heneo Suarez, and I think it generally plays through.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think that's all fair. So and especially
- 9:55Speaker 1: like considering the draft costs that you probably put into
- 9:59Speaker 1: a Hena Suarez, like, you still can't beat it for
- 10:02Speaker 1: what's going to happen over these last two months with
- 10:04Speaker 1: the Mariners. Even if it is more of like a
- 10:06Speaker 1: thirty homer pace than the fifty that he was on,
- 10:10Speaker 1: that's still crazy good for a third basement in fantasy.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. And hey, he's a streaky hitter anyway, So
- 10:16Speaker 2: he was down, he was due for a little bit
- 10:18Speaker 2: of downturn and then come back. So like, it's no
- 10:20Speaker 2: big deals, kin of what you thought with you, Henehol Okay.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Next major deal we had involved the San Diego Padres
- 10:27Speaker 1: because if there's anybody who loves the trade deadline more
- 10:31Speaker 1: than you, Jeremy Brewer. It might be aj Preller could
- 10:34Speaker 1: not just kind of keep his nose out of this,
- 10:36Speaker 1: and once he sniffed that Mason Miller was on the block,
- 10:40Speaker 1: he pursued it pretty hard. That like, there was not
- 10:43Speaker 1: very many rumblings that the Athletics were going to be
- 10:46Speaker 1: moving Miller, but aj Preller busted out the chip to
- 10:51Speaker 1: get it done. Put Leodlls defrees on the table, dealt
- 10:55Speaker 1: him to the Athletics to get Mason Miller and JP Sears,
- 10:59Speaker 1: a couple of other minor leaguers, including Brandon Nett going
- 11:02Speaker 1: back to the Athletics, but we're going to focus here
- 11:04Speaker 1: on Miller and Devrese. So Miller with the A's was
- 11:08Speaker 1: their closer head closed twenty games, twenty saves. That is,
- 11:13Speaker 1: had a four h two ERA, but that also didn't
- 11:16Speaker 1: quite tell the whole story. Is a three fourteen whip. Actually,
- 11:19Speaker 1: I'm also looking at the full season statistics. Let me
- 11:22Speaker 1: actually split that so I can get you what it
- 11:25Speaker 1: truly was distilled down with the Athletics is a three
- 11:28Speaker 1: seventy six ERA with the Athletics a two to eighty
- 11:31Speaker 1: eight whip with a thirteen point nine K nine just
- 11:36Speaker 1: a lights out closer moving to the Padres into a
- 11:40Speaker 1: setup role behind Robert Suarez. Kau Suarez is in trance there.
- 11:43Speaker 1: He's actually signed through twenty twenty sevens. There are rumblings
- 11:47Speaker 1: that the Padres want to convert Miller back into a
- 11:50Speaker 1: starter kind of the way that they have done previously
- 11:53Speaker 1: with Michael King and with Seth Lugo in prior years,
- 11:57Speaker 1: but that's going to be more of an off season project.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Gives them a dynamic probably the best bullpen in the
- 12:03Speaker 1: majors as we get into the playoff stretch between Miller, Suarez,
- 12:07Speaker 1: Jason Adam, Jeremiah Strata, even like you got guys like
- 12:13Speaker 1: Peralta there, who is just guy? If I got Adrian Morohane,
- 12:17Speaker 1: I'm thinking of who I always call more John in
- 12:20Speaker 1: honor of our friend John, who always does that in
- 12:24Speaker 1: our leagues. Loves saying more John. But so you're gonna
- 12:28Speaker 1: have a little bit of a downgrade for Miller for
- 12:30Speaker 1: the rest of the year based on moving into that
- 12:33Speaker 1: setup role. So let's focus the conversation there first before
- 12:37Speaker 1: coming back to Debrees. What are you doing with Miller?
- 12:40Speaker 1: Is he still elite enough of a reliever that you
- 12:43Speaker 1: want to keep him around for the ratios and the k's,
- 12:46Speaker 1: And then what are you doing with him in Dynasty
- 12:49Speaker 1: long term? Are you going out and moving him up
- 12:53Speaker 1: your list because of the possibility of starting or I'm
- 12:57Speaker 1: leaning maybe a little bit this direction. I might be
- 12:59Speaker 1: moving him down in terms of value because we saw
- 13:02Speaker 1: him try to start for the a's. He is not
- 13:05Speaker 1: built for starting pitching. I don't believe in terms of
- 13:09Speaker 1: his lengthy injury history, his violent arm action, I just
- 13:13Speaker 1: don't see how Miller can hold up to one hundred
- 13:16Speaker 1: and fifty innings over an entire year. So what do
- 13:19Speaker 1: you think about Mason Miller on the Padres going forward?
- 13:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I think for Miller it's a mixed bag. I
- 13:26Speaker 2: think he's strong enough as a reliever that you hold
- 13:30Speaker 2: on to him and hope for some ratio and strike out. Upside,
- 13:34Speaker 2: he's also gonna be, i think, deploying a little bit
- 13:36Speaker 2: more of the fireman role. So you probably can vulture
- 13:38Speaker 2: some wins from Miller here because he's gonna be put
- 13:42Speaker 2: in all those hard scenarios and since he can go
- 13:45Speaker 2: multiple innings, whether they play it or not, you know,
- 13:47Speaker 2: they seem more willing to do that, though I think
- 13:50Speaker 2: that he'll pick up some wins. I'm very concerned if
- 13:53Speaker 2: he goes into the rotation. To you, Frank, I just
- 13:55Speaker 2: don't think that Arm's gonna hold up. This is coming
- 13:56Speaker 2: from a guy that loves injured pitchers and so like,
- 14:00Speaker 2: I think that's very, very concerning for Miller. But ultimately,
- 14:04Speaker 2: like long term, I'm actually excited for this one, which
- 14:08Speaker 2: might sound funny, because Robert s. Wrez has an opt
- 14:11Speaker 2: out after this season on his contract and he's only
- 14:16Speaker 2: making basically it's two eight million dollar player options. So
- 14:20Speaker 2: maybe not an opt out the traditional way, but he
- 14:24Speaker 2: will be thirty five with two eight million dollar player
- 14:27Speaker 2: options in front of him, and so this is his
- 14:30Speaker 2: last chance, arguably to really go get a bigger contract
- 14:34Speaker 2: and make that a three or four year deal making
- 14:36Speaker 2: twelve thirteen million a year. So I think Surez is
- 14:39Speaker 2: opting out and we're declining his player option this this offseason,
- 14:44Speaker 2: and therefore Miller becomes the closure next year. So I'm
- 14:48Speaker 2: still from a dynasty perspective holding on to Miller. If
- 14:52Speaker 2: the sniffing of starting continues, then I'm on jumpin' ship
- 14:58Speaker 2: at this point.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I that's a good point because he will be
- 15:02Speaker 1: one of the main closers out there. Obviously you'll have
- 15:05Speaker 1: Devin Williams on the market too, but it's going to
- 15:08Speaker 1: be a pretty rap.
- 15:11Speaker 2: I take that. I have to go look at the
- 15:13Speaker 2: contract because he actually might be ARB eligible if he
- 15:16Speaker 2: opts out. That's a good point because he came over
- 15:20Speaker 2: and so I'd have to dig to see if because
- 15:23Speaker 2: a lot of times when guys come over older, they
- 15:27Speaker 2: put a clause in there to basically if they opt
- 15:30Speaker 2: out or decline an option, that they become understruct for
- 15:34Speaker 2: free agents. But I think he wouldn't actually be eligible
- 15:36Speaker 2: till twenty eight if he follows the standard path. So okay,
- 15:40Speaker 2: I might be speaking wrong. That's that's an interesting one.
- 15:42Speaker 2: I need to dig into more because he might have
- 15:44Speaker 2: one of those player options that he can exercise if
- 15:48Speaker 2: he was having really a downturn here again, he might
- 15:52Speaker 2: he might decline that and try to complete their art proces,
- 15:55Speaker 2: which would probably wk out pretty well for him, but
- 15:58Speaker 2: they might be able to hold on to him. So
- 16:00Speaker 2: it looks like I've got some contract you can do
- 16:01Speaker 2: later tonight.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I get into those details. I mean Tim
- 16:05Speaker 1: Durkiss of MLB trade rumors does have him slighted on
- 16:08Speaker 1: the free agent list for this offseason based on that
- 16:11Speaker 1: player option, and so if you're if you're wrong and
- 16:16Speaker 1: will be trade rumors is also wrong, which doesn't happen
- 16:18Speaker 1: very often, so it would be quite the rare sight.
- 16:21Speaker 1: But let's focus back on Leo Devrese here, one of
- 16:26Speaker 1: the top prospects in the game. He's only twenty first
- 16:28Speaker 1: on the Fangrafts rankings just because they're a little bit
- 16:31Speaker 1: unsure of the ultimate kind of power and the eventual
- 16:38Speaker 1: spot where he's going to play in the field, but
- 16:40Speaker 1: pretty much consensus top five dynasty Fantasy prospects, just because
- 16:46Speaker 1: it's a pretty messianic bat here out of Leo Devrees.
- 16:49Speaker 1: He's only eighteen years old and has held his own
- 16:53Speaker 1: in High A. I'll give you the full line because
- 16:55Speaker 1: he's now put in five games with the Athletics. It's
- 16:59Speaker 1: a two five three point fifty three four h nine
- 17:02Speaker 1: slash line. Doesn't sound too special, but again, he's eighteen
- 17:06Speaker 1: years old in High A with putting up a one
- 17:09Speaker 1: to fourteen WRC plus with eight homers eight Stonlee bases.
- 17:13Speaker 1: This is a guy who would be would have been
- 17:16Speaker 1: draft eligible out of high school and is going to
- 17:19Speaker 1: be rounding into double A next year. So there's possibility
- 17:23Speaker 1: we see him in twenty twenty six, but it's probably
- 17:25Speaker 1: more of a twenty twenty seven arrival horizon for Leo Devrees.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Any kind of maneuvering that you're doing with his ranking
- 17:35Speaker 1: and dynasty going forward, Any concerns maybe with the athletics
- 17:40Speaker 1: developmental program, Yeah, if any, Like.
- 17:43Speaker 2: I No, I don't think I'm moving to him really
- 17:45Speaker 2: adjusting him any long term rankings, like if anything, it's
- 17:49Speaker 2: just a little interesting, But I do think that the
- 17:52Speaker 2: athletics development program is maybe not as strong as he
- 17:55Speaker 2: would have had in San Diego. That said, i'd you
- 18:00Speaker 2: think Oakland, Sorry, Las Vegas, sacrament I don't know who
- 18:03Speaker 2: they are athletics, they're they're they're gonna be a little
- 18:07Speaker 2: bit more timid with him because they want to capitalize
- 18:11Speaker 2: on getting the most out of them, whereas I think
- 18:13Speaker 2: the Padres would have been a little more aggressive in
- 18:16Speaker 2: moving him up. And so maybe it's delays your timetable
- 18:19Speaker 2: a little bit, and you know, you end up playing
- 18:21Speaker 2: a little bit more of the service time game here.
- 18:24Speaker 2: But at the end of the day, he's still a
- 18:25Speaker 2: top prospect. You know, kudos to Preller for being willing
- 18:29Speaker 2: to make make make a move here, uh and be
- 18:33Speaker 2: bold because I did not see, didn't have my BINGO
- 18:37Speaker 2: card to have Leo de Freeze moving this this trade
- 18:41Speaker 2: trade season.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, And I mean I do wonder if this
- 18:45Speaker 1: is one that kind of like James Wood, Mackenzie Gore
- 18:49Speaker 1: trade turner, some of the high profile guys that Preller
- 18:52Speaker 1: has moved comes back to bite him when especially he
- 18:56Speaker 1: has to watch a thirty four year old Xander Bogart's
- 19:01Speaker 1: men shortstop for him next year, that he might be
- 19:04Speaker 1: wishing that he had a nineteen year old the Ood
- 19:05Speaker 1: Debree that he could start moving to. I do also
- 19:08Speaker 1: think that like it's a nice spot in for the
- 19:12Speaker 1: Athletics where they don't really have a great long term
- 19:14Speaker 1: solution at second or third base. Obviously they have Jacob
- 19:18Speaker 1: Wilson who will be pretty entrenched at shortstop. So I
- 19:22Speaker 1: don't know if it's going to alter the timeline for
- 19:24Speaker 1: Derese too much if he produces, just because a guy
- 19:27Speaker 1: like that, it seems like the sky's limit. Okay, let's
- 19:32Speaker 1: stick back in San Diego as they made probably the
- 19:36Speaker 1: fourth largest trade I would say in terms of going
- 19:39Speaker 1: to the Orioles acquiring Ryan O'Hearn acquiring Ramon Loreano, which
- 19:43Speaker 1: the Loreano one was especially surprising for the Orioles because
- 19:47Speaker 1: he was ar be eligible. He still had some arbitration
- 19:50Speaker 1: left between, like what he was running off from his
- 19:53Speaker 1: original time with the A's, so it's not like he
- 19:55Speaker 1: was a free agent that needed to be moved by Baltimore.
- 19:58Speaker 1: O'Hearn was going to be out the door as he
- 20:02Speaker 1: is a pending free agent. So what do you think
- 20:04Speaker 1: of these guys landing in San Diego, between Ramon and
- 20:06Speaker 1: Loriano and Brian O'Hearn, any sort of value adjustments you're
- 20:09Speaker 1: doing with them considering their move over from Baltimore.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the the O'Hearn, I'm not not doing
- 20:17Speaker 2: much with. I think o'hearne is who he is, you know, platoon, bat,
- 20:21Speaker 2: streaky power. I don't think it really matters. Where's that
- 20:24Speaker 2: Maybe slightly better lineup, but also the playing time maybe
- 20:28Speaker 2: a little more questionable. I'm not sure we're gonna see
- 20:31Speaker 2: how that still plays out. Loriotto, on the other hand,
- 20:34Speaker 2: like he has been hot, he has been producing, and
- 20:37Speaker 2: it's been a long time, I would say a long time.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Has he ever been on a competitive team like.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Some of those A teams went to the playoffs back
- 20:46Speaker 1: of the day.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Okay, okay, we'll give it that. But like he he
- 20:49Speaker 2: seems like a guy that really, you know, could benefit
- 20:53Speaker 2: from like that spark. He seems to be kind of
- 20:55Speaker 2: a streaky guy, and so I think I'm a little
- 20:59Speaker 2: more intrigued for him to see what happens in a
- 21:01Speaker 2: stronger lineup, have a little more play protection around him.
- 21:04Speaker 2: I think he really can do some more damage. He's
- 21:07Speaker 2: always been a health concern. He's he's already nearing, you know,
- 21:13Speaker 2: career highs and games here. His career high has actually
- 21:15Speaker 2: one twenty three, but he's only eclipsed one hundred games
- 21:18Speaker 2: twice in his career and he's at eighty seven Ordy
- 21:20Speaker 2: this year. So he might be hurt tomorrow for all
- 21:23Speaker 2: I know. But he seems to really be kind of
- 21:27Speaker 2: lean into playing in new space, and I think that's
- 21:30Speaker 2: gonna play well for him. So again, not more of
- 21:32Speaker 2: an analytical perspective here saying it's a better ballpark or
- 21:36Speaker 2: anything like that. It might be slightly better for him,
- 21:41Speaker 2: But I do think that just being in that playoff race.
- 21:44Speaker 2: The excitement of that move is going to play well
- 21:48Speaker 2: for Loretto, so I'm a little bit more intrigued with him.
- 21:50Speaker 2: He's just looked a lot better as of late.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, and I think even in like keeper
- 21:55Speaker 1: dynasty situation's big up arrow for Loreo. I know, moving
- 21:58Speaker 1: to San Diego, he's going to be the starting left
- 22:02Speaker 1: fielder probably for twenty twenty six as well. So nice
- 22:05Speaker 1: little lineup to settle into. Don't have to worry about
- 22:07Speaker 1: being a part of that next wave of another Baltimore rebuild.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Probably so well, you got Prober at the helm here,
- 22:14Speaker 2: so you never know.
- 22:15Speaker 1: True. But I mean, he's on a four million dollar
- 22:19Speaker 1: deal for next year. It's gonna be tough for aj
- 22:22Speaker 1: to walk away from a four million dollars starting Yes.
- 22:25Speaker 2: He needs a lot of four million dollar guys around.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Yes, he's been here exactly. Okay, next trade we have
- 22:31Speaker 1: is Meryl Kelly, who's a free agent to be moving
- 22:34Speaker 1: from Arizona to Texas and not necessarily a huge return
- 22:38Speaker 1: going back to Arizona. So we're gonna focus here on
- 22:41Speaker 1: Meryl Kelly, who before joining the Rangers had put up
- 22:45Speaker 1: a three to twenty two Era over one hundred and
- 22:47Speaker 1: twenty eight and two thirds innings, going nine and six
- 22:50Speaker 1: with the Dbacks. Looks sharp. In his first outing with
- 22:55Speaker 1: the Rangers at Seattle, went five and two thirds tow runs,
- 23:01Speaker 1: six walks or six k's six walks will be bad
- 23:04Speaker 1: no walks, six k's no walks, and so great little
- 23:09Speaker 1: debut for him. It's been a solid season for the
- 23:11Speaker 1: thirty six year old, and I love this move for Kelly.
- 23:15Speaker 1: He's been sneaky great this year if you've had him
- 23:19Speaker 1: in spots, and this only boosts the value because do
- 23:22Speaker 1: you know where Globe Life Field ranks on park factors
- 23:26Speaker 1: for this year.
- 23:28Speaker 2: I haven't looked. You're leading the witness here, but go ahead,
- 23:31Speaker 2: because I have not looked. And traditionally it's been a
- 23:34Speaker 2: decent park, but I'm taking this looked. It's it's actually
- 23:38Speaker 2: the gone the other way. It's actually become more of
- 23:39Speaker 2: a picture save him.
- 23:40Speaker 1: It's the number one pictures park in baseball right now,
- 23:44Speaker 1: which I mean I think it also explains a little
- 23:47Speaker 1: bit of than Nathan Neovaldi, like what's going on there.
- 23:50Speaker 1: I do wonder I want somebody to like look into
- 23:53Speaker 1: this that I wonder if there's also a little bit
- 23:55Speaker 1: of like a Metro Dome air conditioning situation, where at
- 23:58Speaker 1: the old Metro Dome in Minnesota, the facilities team was
- 24:02Speaker 1: very well known for making sure the AC was blasting
- 24:06Speaker 1: and blowing in when the away team was batting, and
- 24:10Speaker 1: not blasting when the Twins are up. I wonder if
- 24:13Speaker 1: there's a little bit of that going on down in Texas,
- 24:15Speaker 1: because visiting teams really struggled there. On top of also,
- 24:21Speaker 1: the next one is t Mobile Park, which we know
- 24:24Speaker 1: the second to worst, So I guess third worst would
- 24:29Speaker 1: be Milwaukee, which it used to be in Tampa would
- 24:32Speaker 1: be down there. There's a little bit of like something
- 24:33Speaker 1: with led lighting in Texas. They're constantly playing indoors. I
- 24:38Speaker 1: don't know when the last time that they've had that
- 24:40Speaker 1: park open was, so's there's a factor there too. So
- 24:44Speaker 1: great landing spot for Merriel Kelly. Anything that you think
- 24:48Speaker 1: I might be overlooking, anything that you don't like about
- 24:52Speaker 1: the profile, or you kind of on board with me here, No,
- 24:55Speaker 1: I'm jenerlling.
- 24:55Speaker 2: On board like Kelly is just for the last few
- 24:58Speaker 2: years has been this kind of unassuming workhorse and like
- 25:02Speaker 2: there's nothing that he's just like unbelievable at he gets
- 25:05Speaker 2: decent strikeouts, he doesn't walk too many, he goes deep
- 25:09Speaker 2: into games, he doesn't blow up like he's just a
- 25:12Speaker 2: workhorse for for your rotation, and so not a better
- 25:16Speaker 2: spot than to move into a team that's you know,
- 25:19Speaker 2: a little bit more competitive than where he was coming from.
- 25:23Speaker 2: And I think that that's, you know, to your point,
- 25:25Speaker 2: coming to a better ballpark because you know, Arizona was
- 25:28Speaker 2: not necessarily the greatest bictuest park by any means. I
- 25:32Speaker 2: think that this only arrows up for him, and you know,
- 25:34Speaker 2: he's gonna get a little more run support. So you know,
- 25:37Speaker 2: the the nine and six record was actually pretty pretty
- 25:39Speaker 2: decent at least, you know what he's at now, add
- 25:44Speaker 2: another four or five wins throughout the rest of the season,
- 25:46Speaker 2: he can maybe sniff fifteen. Like it's a great, great
- 25:50Speaker 2: season for Meryl Kelly. So I really I do like this,
- 25:53Speaker 2: and you know, he's probably got a few more sneaky
- 25:55Speaker 2: good seasons left in him.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I think it's gonna be a nice
- 26:01Speaker 1: kind of pickup for the Rangers down the stretch as
- 26:02Speaker 1: they are really right in that wild card battle right now. Okay,
- 26:07Speaker 1: next one, This one was also very surprising. We had
- 26:09Speaker 1: the Guardians moving Shane Bieber, who has been out all
- 26:13Speaker 1: season with Tommy John surgery. They sent him over to
- 26:16Speaker 1: the Toronto Blue Jays and honestly, the brown This time
- 26:21Speaker 1: next week we might be talking about Shane Bieber pitching
- 26:24Speaker 1: for the Toronto Blue Jays because just on August third,
- 26:28Speaker 1: he made his fourth rehab start since he was kind
- 26:32Speaker 1: of reactivated after he was shut down. The reactivation happened
- 26:39Speaker 1: in mid July. He's made four starts of two innings,
- 26:42Speaker 1: three innings, four innings, then five innings. Over those fourteen
- 26:47Speaker 1: total innings, two fifty seven ERA twenty two strikeouts against
- 26:51Speaker 1: just two walks. It has come against complex high A,
- 26:55Speaker 1: double A, triple A pitchers, So take that with a
- 26:58Speaker 1: little bit of grain of salt, but you do love
- 27:01Speaker 1: to see that twenty two k's to just two walks,
- 27:06Speaker 1: especially coming off with Tommy John surgery. We're looking at
- 27:09Speaker 1: its former sy Young winner here. How much are you
- 27:13Speaker 1: in love with Shane Bieber? Are there any leagues that
- 27:15Speaker 1: you don't own him in?
- 27:21Speaker 2: I was going through the leagues. I think I own
- 27:22Speaker 2: him in every single league I'm in, so very very
- 27:26Speaker 2: fair point. I absolutely love Shane Bieber. This is one
- 27:29Speaker 2: of the like if you listen to pod you know,
- 27:31Speaker 2: the profiles that go after like he is the epitome
- 27:33Speaker 2: of the profile and go after good control, you know,
- 27:37Speaker 2: good good decent, you know, movement, good ground ball rates.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Like He's the kind of picture I absolutely love. And
- 27:47Speaker 2: so yeah, I think from what I've seen, he's probably
- 27:50Speaker 2: two more rehab starts, so Saturday he's going to get
- 27:53Speaker 2: a start, and they expecting one more after that before
- 27:55Speaker 2: he makes his debut. So we're looking right mid August
- 27:58Speaker 2: here to your point, we're probably tucking you know, tend
- 28:01Speaker 2: to fourteen days before we're seeing him for the Blue
- 28:04Speaker 2: Jays for a month and a half. What's really interesting
- 28:06Speaker 2: here is what's this gonna look like, you know, this
- 28:09Speaker 2: first time with a new organization, playing playing in Toronto. Like,
- 28:15Speaker 2: I think this is gonna be just fine for him.
- 28:17Speaker 2: He he's an he's he's a really professional pitcher, and
- 28:21Speaker 2: so I think, you know, everything he's done so far
- 28:23Speaker 2: in his rehab, you know, kind of gives me the
- 28:25Speaker 2: brand Woodruff vibes, which is like he is who he
- 28:28Speaker 2: is and he's coming back strong and he should be
- 28:30Speaker 2: absolutely good. The question really comes down to, this is
- 28:33Speaker 2: just an interesting trade for the Blue Jays.
- 28:35Speaker 1: Uh.
- 28:35Speaker 2: They gave up a decent prospect for him, but Bieber's
- 28:39Speaker 2: got a player option for next year. So they just
- 28:43Speaker 2: traded for like a month month and a half here
- 28:47Speaker 2: of Shane Bieber, which I mean I get that they
- 28:49Speaker 2: that they need him and trying to you know, solidify
- 28:53Speaker 2: that spot. So they're probably looking for the Hey, if
- 28:55Speaker 2: he's gonna be what we expect him to be, and
- 28:57Speaker 2: clearly they have zero concerns about the Hell that's what
- 29:00Speaker 2: I'm actually most intrigued here for if you're trained for
- 29:03Speaker 2: a guy like Shane Bieber. There's been a lot of
- 29:05Speaker 2: injured guys this year that like you thought were going
- 29:07Speaker 2: to come back. You're looking at you, Shane McClanahan, and
- 29:12Speaker 2: they just haven't made it back, or they've just been
- 29:15Speaker 2: you know, seeing time after time or you know, rehab
- 29:17Speaker 2: start blowing up things like that. And Bieber looks good.
- 29:21Speaker 2: They're confident in them, and they're paying a good prospect
- 29:24Speaker 2: for a month and a half and maybe the playoff
- 29:25Speaker 2: run regardless of what happens next year with them. So
- 29:30Speaker 2: I'm sold you already knew that because that's just who
- 29:33Speaker 2: I am with Shane Bieber.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I didn't. I didn't mean to lead the witness
- 29:37Speaker 1: on that one. Knew where you were going to go,
- 29:40Speaker 1: So I honestly I'm in I'm in lock stuff with you,
- 29:43Speaker 1: especially when you're looking at the strikeout to walk rate.
- 29:46Speaker 1: And it didn't ever seem like the injury that he
- 29:49Speaker 1: suffered last year, even though it was Tommy John, it
- 29:52Speaker 1: didn't seem like quite the hurdle of some of these
- 29:55Speaker 1: other tjs that we've we've heard of, where especially given
- 29:59Speaker 1: that I'm there's probably two or three years that Bieber
- 30:02Speaker 1: was pitching with a torn ish ucl that, you know,
- 30:06Speaker 1: I think he had gotten used to the process that
- 30:08Speaker 1: he's just been such an elite control artist too, where
- 30:12Speaker 1: it's not like it's a guy who was was really
- 30:15Speaker 1: relying on pumping ninety eight mile an hour gas pitch
- 30:18Speaker 1: after pitch after pitch to be able to survive that.
- 30:22Speaker 1: I think there's a lot of things in Bieber's profile
- 30:24Speaker 1: that will carry through well as he kind of comes
- 30:27Speaker 1: through through with the Blue Jays down the stretch. All right.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Last main trade that I want to hit is Cedric
- 30:34Speaker 1: Mullens move into the New York Mets, and so this
- 30:37Speaker 1: was actually my pick for the buye from the Baltimore
- 30:40Speaker 1: Orioles before the season, just mostly because it was fifteen homer,
- 30:43Speaker 1: sixteen stolen bases over ninety five games out of Mullins
- 30:47Speaker 1: before he moved. The batting average was low at two
- 30:49Speaker 1: twenty four. But if you need a guy who offered
- 30:52Speaker 1: power and speed, prices didn't get too much better. But
- 30:56Speaker 1: Mullens offered you out there, so should go to New
- 30:59Speaker 1: York and do relatively the same. He when I posted
- 31:03Speaker 1: this just the other day, he was not in a
- 31:05Speaker 1: platoon situation for the Mets. Has on roster resource has
- 31:09Speaker 1: been moved into a strong side platoon, but that's only because,
- 31:12Speaker 1: like he also might have just gotten a day off
- 31:14Speaker 1: against a lefty and they let Tyrone Taylor play. So
- 31:17Speaker 1: I do think that Mullens will probably play eighty five
- 31:20Speaker 1: ninety percent of the time in center field for the Mets,
- 31:23Speaker 1: given how poor their center field situation has been. I
- 31:27Speaker 1: think it's a little bit of an up arrow, just
- 31:29Speaker 1: given the overall offensive lineup that he's moving to New York.
- 31:33Speaker 1: What about you?
- 31:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's a slight up arrow. Like I've
- 31:37Speaker 2: really struggled with molds in the past, Like, I just
- 31:39Speaker 2: the overall profile does not do it for me. But
- 31:42Speaker 2: then is this guy that you keep looking at the
- 31:44Speaker 2: end of the season be like, how do you manage that?
- 31:46Speaker 2: Like this kind of feels like an Anthony Bulby kind
- 31:49Speaker 2: of thing here where it's like the whole seasons of
- 31:51Speaker 2: pain and you look back and he went twenty twenty
- 31:53Speaker 2: and hit two forty, You're like, well, where did that
- 31:55Speaker 2: come from? And so like, I feel like that's kind
- 31:57Speaker 2: of the the Mullens pace that we're on this year.
- 32:01Speaker 2: And to your point, in a competitive, more competitive lineup
- 32:04Speaker 2: doing you know, expecting to to contribute and you know,
- 32:08Speaker 2: really the fielding hasn't been the big concern in the past,
- 32:12Speaker 2: so and if there's any team that's struggled with outfielders,
- 32:17Speaker 2: definitely been the been the Mets. So I think this
- 32:20Speaker 2: is a slight up arrow. I'm I'm still there's a
- 32:23Speaker 2: part of me just can't really fully buy into Mullins
- 32:26Speaker 2: because it just always looks like the wheels are just
- 32:27Speaker 2: about to fall off. But you can't negate the fact
- 32:31Speaker 2: that the production just continues to be there as long
- 32:33Speaker 2: as you're not going back to you know what Mullens
- 32:36Speaker 2: was a handful of years ago when he had his
- 32:38Speaker 2: little homer outburst. We hit thirty homers back in twenty
- 32:42Speaker 2: twenty one. Like, I think that just on a sudden
- 32:44Speaker 2: unreasonable expectations for Mullens for like two three years, because
- 32:48Speaker 2: that's just not the guy he was. And if you
- 32:50Speaker 2: if you get comfortable with him being this mid teens homer,
- 32:54Speaker 2: you know, twenty steel guy hitting two thirty like that,
- 32:57Speaker 2: that's fine, that's who he is, you should be really happy.
- 33:00Speaker 2: So I think slide up arrow from Rolins here, but
- 33:03Speaker 2: I'm still hesitant overall because I feel like I've been
- 33:05Speaker 2: burned too many times by this play.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I hear it. Okay, Well, that kind of
- 33:11Speaker 1: summarizes what I think where the biggest trades in terms
- 33:14Speaker 1: of name value, kind of impact, especially you're kind of
- 33:18Speaker 1: looking at all of those dudes that we just discussed
- 33:21Speaker 1: were certainly owned and shallower leagues like ten teamers as well,
- 33:25Speaker 1: so lots of impact there. I figured we would also
- 33:28Speaker 1: focus on some of the other pieces of fallout in
- 33:30Speaker 1: terms of where there's shuffling of teams and rosters, where
- 33:36Speaker 1: new players might be taking over roles or just new
- 33:40Speaker 1: kind of situations on new teams leading to downgrades and
- 33:45Speaker 1: roles as well too. So let's focus on some of
- 33:47Speaker 1: the risers first from a fantasy perspective. So we've actually
- 33:51Speaker 1: got two outfielders here who I think both are gonna
- 33:55Speaker 1: get significant up arrows just because of their situations and
- 34:00Speaker 1: they're kind of linked. So we have Hayesu Sanchez and
- 34:03Speaker 1: Jacob Marcy. Hayesu Sanchez was dealt from the Marlins to
- 34:07Speaker 1: the Astros and is now just the two hole hitter
- 34:09Speaker 1: for the Astros, which has been he was a great cheap,
- 34:14Speaker 1: cheap power speed combo for the Marlins before arriving in Houston.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Had put up ten homers, nine stolen bases, two fifty
- 34:20Speaker 1: six average over eighty six games with the with Miami,
- 34:24Speaker 1: that's a great, great outfield option for what he cost
- 34:29Speaker 1: at the draft table for fantasy. So in terms of
- 34:34Speaker 1: that arrival in Houston, do you agree up arrow just
- 34:37Speaker 1: because he's hitting in the two hole for the Houston Astros.
- 34:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he's pretty simple here. Better ballpark, better position,
- 34:43Speaker 2: better team. It's it's gonna be good. The only only
- 34:46Speaker 2: question I have here is the speed. I think you
- 34:50Speaker 2: actually maybe get a little down arrow in the speed
- 34:53Speaker 2: if you've not, or have you played our favorite game
- 34:55Speaker 2: already or you.
- 34:59Speaker 1: Page, let's go there.
- 35:00Speaker 2: So Jesus Sanchez has nine steals this year on eleven attempts,
- 35:05Speaker 2: sixteen steals last year for the Marlins. What's the sprint speed?
- 35:10Speaker 2: Is this going to play in Houston?
- 35:13Speaker 1: I guess it's actually probably around the fifty percentile mark
- 35:17Speaker 1: thirty six. Okay, Yeah, this is a six four two
- 35:22Speaker 1: twenty two. Is a big boy and big strides. Yeah,
- 35:26Speaker 1: big big strides, as you know.
- 35:27Speaker 2: And so I do think that they're not looking for
- 35:29Speaker 2: him to run necessarily the Marlins. You know, We're able
- 35:33Speaker 2: to let him kind of do his thing, be a
- 35:35Speaker 2: little more aggressive, try to manufactured things. I think Houston,
- 35:38Speaker 2: especially in the two holes in front of some some
- 35:40Speaker 2: decent hitters there, I think they're gonna pull back on
- 35:43Speaker 2: the steels a little bit. But you see improvement in
- 35:46Speaker 2: the runs. RBIs maybe a little of the power department,
- 35:48Speaker 2: So overall up arrow, little caution in the steels.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean it is only a handful of games,
- 35:55Speaker 1: but you can already see that the contact rate is
- 35:58Speaker 1: improved with the Astros two. So so I think there
- 36:01Speaker 1: is more meat on the bone in terms of development
- 36:03Speaker 1: for Sanchez. He's only twenty seven years old, is that right? Yeah,
- 36:07Speaker 1: twenty seven, so you especially look at also just the
- 36:11Speaker 1: size is pretty comparable to Jordan Alvarez that you know
- 36:15Speaker 1: there has been success with this type of profile in
- 36:17Speaker 1: Houston in the past. I would not be surprised to
- 36:19Speaker 1: see him really take off and become especially a big
- 36:24Speaker 1: sleeper pick going into next year, considering that role in Houston.
- 36:28Speaker 1: But let's focus on Jacob Marcy because I think this
- 36:30Speaker 1: guy is probably the winner from Fantasy in terms of
- 36:35Speaker 1: the deadline fallout, just period. Because he was on fire
- 36:39Speaker 1: in Triple A before this call up. It was a
- 36:42Speaker 1: two forty six three seventy nine. So you can see
- 36:45Speaker 1: right there, that's like a sixteen percent walk rate, four
- 36:49Speaker 1: thirty eight slash line. That's a one twenty six WRSC
- 36:52Speaker 1: plus fourteen homers forty seven stolen bases in ninety eight games.
- 36:57Speaker 1: You and I had actually both written about him before
- 37:00Speaker 1: the call up because we both saw kind of the
- 37:03Speaker 1: tea leafs coming together. I was going through the Jacob
- 37:06Speaker 1: Marcy tags on Rasball this afternoon. I was like, oh,
- 37:10Speaker 1: this is great because I think we got the two
- 37:12Speaker 1: Marcibros together on this pod talking about him immediately has
- 37:17Speaker 1: paid dividends in Miami walking into that starting lineup. I
- 37:21Speaker 1: think they were saying it was like one of the
- 37:25Speaker 1: weirdest stats. I think it was like in his first
- 37:28Speaker 1: was it eight plate appearance or something, he had like
- 37:30Speaker 1: four walks and four extra base hits. Because this dude
- 37:34Speaker 1: is also just like an absolute grinder too, Like he
- 37:38Speaker 1: has no sense of caution. I think in terms of
- 37:42Speaker 1: both playing at the plate, you'll see like every at
- 37:46Speaker 1: bat he grinds out and expects to get a hit,
- 37:49Speaker 1: like I've just seen him battle every single at bat
- 37:53Speaker 1: that I've watched him play, and top of like when
- 37:55Speaker 1: he's on the bass pass, he's looking to go. It's
- 37:57Speaker 1: a lot of like a Pete Curl Armstrong kind of profile.
- 38:00Speaker 1: I think in terms of what he can offer, not
- 38:04Speaker 1: quite the same pedigree, also just a little less contact ability,
- 38:08Speaker 1: but honestly a way better. I he is never run
- 38:13Speaker 1: a walk rate lower than twelve point nine percent in
- 38:16Speaker 1: the minors, and that was only last year at Triple
- 38:19Speaker 1: A for the first time for twenty two games. So
- 38:21Speaker 1: this dude gets on base. I think he's gonna win
- 38:24Speaker 1: some leagues down the stretch because the stolen bases are
- 38:27Speaker 1: gonna be tremendous. Am I over hyping Jacob Marcy too much?
- 38:31Speaker 2: I don't think so. Was he gonna win the leagues?
- 38:35Speaker 2: We'll see, But like obp leagues certainly like that that
- 38:41Speaker 2: this is guy's a cheat code there, Like he's a
- 38:44Speaker 2: bit of it. It's an odd scenario of a free swinger,
- 38:47Speaker 2: but not like and I think that's what throws you
- 38:49Speaker 2: off there is that like to your point, like he
- 38:51Speaker 2: will fight things off, he will get on base, but
- 38:55Speaker 2: average is still gonna be a bit of a challenge
- 38:57Speaker 2: for him because he's not the most powerful hit. He
- 39:01Speaker 2: is more of a spray hitter, your doubles hitter. He's
- 39:05Speaker 2: you know, maybe gonna sniff double digit home runs across
- 39:08Speaker 2: the season. And but he he's got this incredible piece
- 39:13Speaker 2: that a lot of speedsters don't have, which is that
- 39:16Speaker 2: ability to get on base, and that absolutely gives him
- 39:22Speaker 2: a floor that is admirable. And he's always been a
- 39:27Speaker 2: very efficient base runner, like this year is probably his worst,
- 39:31Speaker 2: and he's stolen forty seven and sixty attempts in the minors.
- 39:35Speaker 2: Last year he stole fifty one and fifty eight. You know,
- 39:40Speaker 2: he's always been a very efficient base runner. So like
- 39:44Speaker 2: if you like Chandler Simpson, you should like Jacob Marcy.
- 39:47Speaker 2: Like there's there's just no question. It's just a little
- 39:49Speaker 2: bit of different mold, lower average, you know, a little
- 39:53Speaker 2: bit more power. He's also gonna be a streaky type
- 39:57Speaker 2: of hitter for for sure, with the with the approach
- 39:58Speaker 2: he has, you're gonna, you know, especially again if you're
- 40:01Speaker 2: not in a walks type of reward league, he's gonna
- 40:04Speaker 2: all of a sudden walk four times in the game and
- 40:06Speaker 2: he's gonna be completely useless to you. But I really
- 40:09Speaker 2: really like this this profile again playing for the Marlins.
- 40:12Speaker 2: They're gonna let him do, They're gonna let him go
- 40:15Speaker 2: and this it makes to be exciting to see. So
- 40:19Speaker 2: this is the kind of guy that you can absolutely
- 40:21Speaker 2: be counting on to to do some damage. And that's
- 40:23Speaker 2: why I wrote about him like a month ago. It's like,
- 40:25Speaker 2: if you're if you're looking for steels, pick this guy
- 40:28Speaker 2: up because when he gets the call, it's it's cheat code,
- 40:31Speaker 2: absolutely cheat code. So love him. Jacob Barci here. It'll
- 40:34Speaker 2: be fun to watch to see how much they let
- 40:36Speaker 2: him run early on here.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Yeah, and I mean it's gonna be fun to watch
- 40:41Speaker 1: the Marlinists on the stretch because they're of the periphery
- 40:43Speaker 1: of this wild card race, and I like the team.
- 40:46Speaker 1: It's a fun little team that Peter Bendex is finally
- 40:49Speaker 1: kind of put together. So we'll see how they go forward.
- 40:52Speaker 1: All right, next risers we have are new closers. There's
- 40:56Speaker 1: always new closers as the old ones were shipped out
- 40:59Speaker 1: during the trade deadline. If you do want the breakdown
- 41:02Speaker 1: of all the trades, because I know we only covered like,
- 41:04Speaker 1: what was that seven of them in total, out of
- 41:08Speaker 1: the fifty or whatever, so that is in the show notes.
- 41:11Speaker 1: You can go and see the whole list. You can
- 41:13Speaker 1: see all of the closer moves and stuff that we
- 41:15Speaker 1: didn't discuss because we're breaking it down here. New closers
- 41:19Speaker 1: that I've got listed are Jose Ferrara in Washington, Jojo
- 41:23Speaker 1: Romero in Saint Louis, Randy Rodriguez in San Francisco, Dennis
- 41:28Speaker 1: Santana in Pittsburgh. I'm gonna set Randy Rodriguez aside because
- 41:33Speaker 1: that's probably that's easily the number one name out.
- 41:36Speaker 2: Of I wanted the gimme like, that's yeah, there's no question.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Because he has put up a twelve point three K
- 41:42Speaker 1: nine over forty six and two thirds a one fifty
- 41:45Speaker 1: four era. This dude is one of the most electrical
- 41:48Speaker 1: relievers in all the game. Easy like top eight closer
- 41:53Speaker 1: probably the rest of the way, just given the profile.
- 41:56Speaker 1: Should have been closing for a while, maybe in San
- 41:58Speaker 1: Francisco before Deval got shipped out. Of the other three
- 42:02Speaker 1: Forrere Romero Santana, if you had to pick one, who's
- 42:06Speaker 1: your go to?
- 42:08Speaker 2: If I had to pick one, it would be Santana,
- 42:11Speaker 2: and the reason being, like I think there's a I
- 42:15Speaker 2: think Santana and Romero probably the best stuff. Romero being
- 42:19Speaker 2: the only lefty in that Cardinal's bullpen, and I'm just
- 42:23Speaker 2: not sure that they're fully going to commit to him
- 42:26Speaker 2: in that role, so they might mix and match here
- 42:28Speaker 2: there they see, you know, a few strong lefties coming
- 42:31Speaker 2: through in the eighth, they might pull him there. So
- 42:33Speaker 2: I think Santana has a little bit clearer path to
- 42:35Speaker 2: the role. I feel like all three teams that they're
- 42:38Speaker 2: on aren'tetting a ton of wins, so it's not like
- 42:41Speaker 2: there's a big team there in Ferrer, I just don't
- 42:43Speaker 2: think has as strong as an Arsenal. He's not a
- 42:46Speaker 2: prototypical closure. Not not that either the other two are
- 42:49Speaker 2: like prototypal, but they're like much closer than Frer. So
- 42:53Speaker 2: I'm taking Santana slightly over Romero, both pretty handily over
- 42:58Speaker 2: for Ara.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I'm in the same boat. And honestly,
- 43:02Speaker 1: I like the skills for Forrere, but that is me.
- 43:05Speaker 1: That bullpen in Washington now is maybe like one of
- 43:08Speaker 1: the worst bullpens I've ever seen. Like Colorado's up there
- 43:12Speaker 1: right now too.
- 43:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't like they're in double A right now.
- 43:16Speaker 1: So yeah, because that's gonna be The other issue is
- 43:19Speaker 1: the bridge to get from a starter to Ferrara and
- 43:21Speaker 1: Washington is treacherous. So Romero, I think the only hesitation
- 43:26Speaker 1: is there's other dudes around in Saint Louis and he's
- 43:29Speaker 1: only the only lefty in the pen right now. So
- 43:32Speaker 1: there's gonna be situations where Romero just needs to face
- 43:35Speaker 1: the best left handed batter and that's going to open
- 43:37Speaker 1: up Riley O'Brien or Kyle Lahey or who knows from
- 43:42Speaker 1: the Saint Louis bullpen to finish out.
- 43:44Speaker 2: A safe, But I do think both Romero and Santanai
- 43:47Speaker 2: absolutely be closures next year on these teams. I think
- 43:50Speaker 2: they're both going to get the run for it. For Are,
- 43:53Speaker 2: I don't know, like he ver well could be, but
- 43:55Speaker 2: he gives me the the vibes of any Nationals closess
- 43:58Speaker 2: we ever have, which is, will they ge enough of
- 43:59Speaker 2: ours and they feel like they're about to blow upon you?
- 44:02Speaker 2: I feel like that could be could be the case here,
- 44:04Speaker 2: But I like really all three of Romero, Rodriguez and
- 44:08Speaker 2: Santana to be closers in twenty six as well from
- 44:11Speaker 2: a dynasty perspective.
- 44:12Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, I think that's that's a great call too.
- 44:15Speaker 1: All right, Let's move on to the next riser who
- 44:18Speaker 1: he was a closer and it's the reason why Ferrera
- 44:22Speaker 1: has a job now, and that's Kyle Finnegan moving from
- 44:24Speaker 1: Washington to Detroit. Looks like he took over that closer
- 44:28Speaker 1: job from Will Vest. Over the past week since the deadline,
- 44:31Speaker 1: he's been pretty lights out, while Vest has been much
- 44:35Speaker 1: more shaky after holding down that role for a few months.
- 44:38Speaker 1: So if you want to actually get into the preview
- 44:41Speaker 1: of one of our followers, I think Will Vest is
- 44:43Speaker 1: there because surprisingly he's probably the only incumbent closer given
- 44:48Speaker 1: all the trade activity that lost his job at the
- 44:51Speaker 1: deadline and wasn't really slated too. It's just that within
- 44:54Speaker 1: this past week things switched so quickly in terms of
- 44:58Speaker 1: vest just kind of regressing to the mean a little
- 45:02Speaker 1: bit and Finnegan finding a new level since joining the Tigers,
- 45:06Speaker 1: where it does seem like the control took a tick
- 45:10Speaker 1: up where that was always kind of my issue with Finnegan.
- 45:13Speaker 1: But if the Tigers have found something to unlock there,
- 45:16Speaker 1: they might have found themselves a frontline closer. So where
- 45:20Speaker 1: what are you doing with Finnegan? Do you have that
- 45:22Speaker 1: level of trust with the Tigers kind of pitching development
- 45:25Speaker 1: to start moving him into that more trusted circle of closers.
- 45:30Speaker 2: Uh, I'm not quite sure I'm there yet because they
- 45:33Speaker 2: haven't seen the true Like I agree with you that
- 45:35Speaker 2: they are better development and pitching than the Nationals, and
- 45:39Speaker 2: so I think that they are going to get more
- 45:41Speaker 2: out of Finnegan than what was out there in DC.
- 45:45Speaker 2: But I do still see the Tigers as one of
- 45:47Speaker 2: these teams that they just will not commit to fully
- 45:51Speaker 2: saying that this guy's the closer they're gonna like they're
- 45:54Speaker 2: gonna act that way, but they're never going to fully commit,
- 45:56Speaker 2: and then something's gonna happen. You have a rough few
- 45:58Speaker 2: days and all of a sudden vest is gonna be closing,
- 46:00Speaker 2: and all of a sudden, Tyler Holton's gonna pick up
- 46:02Speaker 2: a safe just because, like, I think that's that's my
- 46:05Speaker 2: only hole up there. So I've got him more in
- 46:08Speaker 2: that mid tier of closers, but compared to where he was,
- 46:13Speaker 2: like being mid tier of closures and maybe being like
- 46:17Speaker 2: getting seventy eight ers in the opportunities in Detroit versus
- 46:20Speaker 2: everything in Washington might just be a wash and it
- 46:24Speaker 2: might be a slightly better pitcher, So like, yeah, I'll
- 46:26Speaker 2: give it a slight up arrow for for fitting in
- 46:28Speaker 2: at this point.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think that's all fair. Okay, next
- 46:33Speaker 1: three rises we have, I think are a little bit
- 46:35Speaker 1: more deeply guys, but I think also pretty significant upgrades
- 46:39Speaker 1: in terms of the value. First one we're gonna cover
- 46:41Speaker 1: is Freddy for Mean, who we really don't ever talk
- 46:44Speaker 1: about because he was a backup catcher in Kansas City,
- 46:46Speaker 1: but now he's the starting catcher for the San Diego Padres.
- 46:50Speaker 1: This is a guy who was that first type of
- 46:54Speaker 1: catcher with a two sixty eight three fourteen three eighty
- 46:58Speaker 1: three slash line. That's a six inety seven oh ps,
- 47:01Speaker 1: which isn't fantastic, but when you're talking catchers, it's not
- 47:04Speaker 1: too bad. In four years with the Royals, where are
- 47:08Speaker 1: you putting for me in terms of picking up for
- 47:11Speaker 1: catchers because catchers have been pretty good, but the back
- 47:14Speaker 1: end of the pool has started to thin out pretty quickly.
- 47:17Speaker 1: So someone you're looking at in two team situations for
- 47:21Speaker 1: twelve teamers or is it more of a fifteen teamer
- 47:23Speaker 1: for Freddy?
- 47:23Speaker 2: For me, yeah, I think it's more the two catcher leagues.
- 47:28Speaker 2: He's probably in that fifteen to eighteen range from on
- 47:32Speaker 2: a catcher's perspective, So yeah, maybe maybe. You know, if
- 47:35Speaker 2: you're running a few injuries in the fifteen teamers, you
- 47:38Speaker 2: have to remember fifteen teamers. Like with some of the
- 47:40Speaker 2: way that catchers came this year, Like there's a lot
- 47:42Speaker 2: of guys that came out of nowhere in it, you know,
- 47:44Speaker 2: let's be frank, a lot of more out of nowhere.
- 47:46Speaker 2: You should just seen a number of these coming. But
- 47:48Speaker 2: I think what I've seen in a lot of leagues.
- 47:50Speaker 2: Is a lot of these guys you may have picked up.
- 47:53Speaker 2: You may have had like an Adlie Rutchman or a
- 47:57Speaker 2: you know, William Contreras or Wilson as whichever contro you
- 48:01Speaker 2: felt like playing, and then you end up with a
- 48:03Speaker 2: Drake Baldwin or Augustin Ramirez or somebody like that as
- 48:06Speaker 2: your backup and so at the back of a fifteen team,
- 48:10Speaker 2: or you might be looking at a Freddy Furman here,
- 48:14Speaker 2: but I still think he's more on the alse had
- 48:16Speaker 2: looking in for me for the most part.
- 48:19Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, I think that's all fair. Just somebody to
- 48:21Speaker 1: throw out there, put on people's radars if you are
- 48:24Speaker 1: hunting for a catcher. Next one we have is it's
- 48:29Speaker 1: the minor league arm that went back to the Guardians
- 48:31Speaker 1: in exchange for Shane Bieber and he's been absolutely lights
- 48:35Speaker 1: out this year in Double A for Toronto. We are
- 48:40Speaker 1: talking Cal Stephen, who was really starting to shoot up
- 48:43Speaker 1: prospect boards. This is another guy I know I talk
- 48:45Speaker 1: about every once in a while. There's guys in our
- 48:47Speaker 1: autonew league where there's been several times in the season
- 48:51Speaker 1: where my finger like hovers over the auction button. Cal
- 48:54Speaker 1: Steven has been there multiple times, because with Toronto it
- 48:58Speaker 1: was over actually three spots or three stops between a
- 49:02Speaker 1: ball hy A Double A had put up a two
- 49:05Speaker 1: oh six ERA and nine point seven K nine to
- 49:08Speaker 1: go with a one point eight walk per nine over
- 49:11Speaker 1: ninety one and two thirds innings. Everything was very glowing
- 49:15Speaker 1: in terms of the prospect reports coming back. Struggled in
- 49:19Speaker 1: a little bit in his first go at double A,
- 49:21Speaker 1: but I mean, this is a guy who should be
- 49:23Speaker 1: ready for the rotation next year. Was drafted out of
- 49:26Speaker 1: Mississippi State last year in the second round by the
- 49:28Speaker 1: Blue Jays, So a pretty good get for the Guardians,
- 49:31Speaker 1: especially given that pitching development system. Also, do you know
- 49:35Speaker 1: where cal Stephen was born?
- 49:37Speaker 2: I do not.
- 49:38Speaker 1: Danville's central reality not too far away. Okay, he's from Danville. Uh.
- 49:43Speaker 1: And so this is a guy who is easily going
- 49:47Speaker 1: to be a top one hundred prospect going into the
- 49:49Speaker 1: off season. I guess how far are you gonna like
- 49:54Speaker 1: push him up with those rankings considering is he reaching
- 49:58Speaker 1: up into those kind of like upper tier of like
- 50:00Speaker 1: Bubba Chandler prospect him for you, or is he kind
- 50:04Speaker 1: of in that next wave where you wouldn't mind having him?
- 50:06Speaker 1: But he's not like a must own in a dynasty
- 50:08Speaker 1: keeper situation.
- 50:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he's probably that next tier for me
- 50:12Speaker 2: right now, Like everything looks really really good. It's I
- 50:15Speaker 2: actually absolutely hated that he got nominated in our new
- 50:18Speaker 2: league because I did not have a roster spot. But
- 50:21Speaker 2: he's like, he's the kind of guy that I'm really
- 50:23Speaker 2: excited about. Right organization, right profile, Arrow's point in the
- 50:28Speaker 2: right direction. But I think there's still like he's still
- 50:33Speaker 2: got a little bit more development to go. He is
- 50:35Speaker 2: a big guy, big arm, and so I think there's
- 50:37Speaker 2: a little little variability that can come with us. But
- 50:41Speaker 2: he is starting to knock on that next layer. I
- 50:44Speaker 2: want to see a little bit more at the next level.
- 50:47Speaker 2: He's he's only got a whole four innings in double A,
- 50:51Speaker 2: and so I'd like to see him at the upper
- 50:53Speaker 2: levels do a little bit more. But yeah, like I
- 50:55Speaker 2: feel like a lot of the top prospect pictures this
- 50:57Speaker 2: year actually stepped back, and so it's giving guys like
- 51:02Speaker 2: Cal Steven opportunity to kind of break into that. So
- 51:05Speaker 2: it'll be interesting to see. But I think he's going
- 51:07Speaker 2: to be starting to say be on the edge that
- 51:09Speaker 2: top ten, top fifteen starting pitcher prospects in this offseason,
- 51:13Speaker 2: and if he finishes the season doing what he's been
- 51:17Speaker 2: doing Toronto at the Double A level for Cleveland, then
- 51:21Speaker 2: I'm a lot more intrigued. So more to come, but
- 51:24Speaker 2: I think he's an absolute buy in the dynasty right now.
- 51:27Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, I'm right locked up with you on cal Stephen.
- 51:30Speaker 1: All right. Last winner that we have is some way
- 51:33Speaker 1: we've talked about a little bit on this pod, and
- 51:35Speaker 1: honestly I've been writing about for almost two straight months
- 51:38Speaker 1: of my Waiver Wire article to tell people to start
- 51:41Speaker 1: stashing him away. It is Dylan Beavers from the Baltimore
- 51:44Speaker 1: Orioles who isn't promoted yet. But I do believe if you, yeah,
- 51:51Speaker 1: I was gonna say, the forty man roster for the
- 51:53Speaker 1: Baltimore Orioles stands at thirty eight right now, and I
- 51:57Speaker 1: think there's a reason for that because around August fifteenth,
- 52:00Speaker 1: it will be the right number of days where players
- 52:03Speaker 1: can still be called up from the minor leagues and
- 52:06Speaker 1: still be eligible for the rookie incentives for next year
- 52:09Speaker 1: in terms of winning Rookie of the Year and getting
- 52:11Speaker 1: the extra draft pick compensation for their teams. So I
- 52:15Speaker 1: think once we crossed that threshold, we're gonna be seeing
- 52:17Speaker 1: Beavers in Baltimore along with Samuel Bassaillo. So there's a
- 52:21Speaker 1: reason why they had the two open forty man roster spots,
- 52:25Speaker 1: I think, and why they're limping along with the likes
- 52:27Speaker 1: of Jeremiah Jackson and Vidal Bruhan and Luis Vasquez and
- 52:31Speaker 1: Ryan Noda in Baltimore. So this is a guy, Dylan Beavers.
- 52:37Speaker 1: It's been an incredible season. He's got nothing left to
- 52:40Speaker 1: prove at Triple as a twenty three year old up
- 52:42Speaker 1: to a three ten four to twenty three five thirty
- 52:45Speaker 1: nine slash line that's a one fifty eight WRC plus
- 52:48Speaker 1: eighteen bombs twenty two homers, has played all over the
- 52:52Speaker 1: outfield plays DH has been hitting first or second every
- 52:56Speaker 1: game in Triple A. Has certainly passed heston Kurstad and system.
- 53:01Speaker 1: He is a big big boy. Six two six is
- 53:04Speaker 1: waistless to that. He's probably bigger than two six though,
- 53:07Speaker 1: because I think that was his weight when he was
- 53:09Speaker 1: drafted back in twenty twenty two. I think at this point,
- 53:14Speaker 1: like especially how close we are to the call up.
- 53:16Speaker 1: Like I said, it's probably next weekend that we see
- 53:18Speaker 1: Beavers come up worth stashing and using a roster spot
- 53:22Speaker 1: in twelve teamers. Do you think.
- 53:24Speaker 2: Absolutely to your point, I think you make a good call.
- 53:28Speaker 2: Eight fifteen two or so or just under ten days.
- 53:31Speaker 2: Michae leis GM for Baltimore did say about four or
- 53:36Speaker 2: five days ago that it would be beneficial for Beavers
- 53:40Speaker 2: to get some seasoning this year at the major league level.
- 53:44Speaker 2: And so he's close to making his debut. Like it's
- 53:47Speaker 2: it's the writings on the wall here, and I think,
- 53:51Speaker 2: you know, if you look at his prospectsavon page I
- 53:54Speaker 2: don't know how many categories there are on that page.
- 53:56Speaker 2: There's like call it twenty. They're all like deep red
- 53:59Speaker 2: except for uh, he's a little aggressive in his swinging, like,
- 54:04Speaker 2: which is not the worst thing when you're when you've
- 54:06Speaker 2: got the speed, you make the barrel contact, you hit
- 54:08Speaker 2: the ball hard, all those kind of things. And so
- 54:11Speaker 2: there's you know, he's maybe gotten a little lucky. He
- 54:13Speaker 2: might not be a three ten hitter, but like two
- 54:17Speaker 2: seventy five to eighty and like I don't think it's unreasonable,
- 54:22Speaker 2: and like he's a speedster and he's been very efficient
- 54:26Speaker 2: in the minor leagues from a speed perspective. Over the
- 54:28Speaker 2: last two years, he has stolen fifty three bases and
- 54:33Speaker 2: got caught seven times and so and you know he's
- 54:37Speaker 2: also hit uh thirty three homers over that time, which
- 54:41Speaker 2: is just about to to ten games. So I think
- 54:45Speaker 2: we're looking at a guy here that's probably a twenty
- 54:50Speaker 2: thirty bat hitting two eighty and gonna score a boatload
- 54:55Speaker 2: of runs. And he like his The concern with him
- 54:59Speaker 2: early on was like, is he is the plate approach
- 55:01Speaker 2: gonna be what it needs to be, or is he
- 55:03Speaker 2: gonna be a high strikeout guy? Even though he never
- 55:05Speaker 2: really was a high strike out guy. That was always
- 55:07Speaker 2: like the concern that he was a well round enough hitter.
- 55:10Speaker 2: He's actually almost walked more than he struck out this year. Yeah,
- 55:14Speaker 2: he is on base at a four twenty three approach.
- 55:18Speaker 2: So I am really excited about Beavers. I think he
- 55:21Speaker 2: is I don't say a must own at this point,
- 55:24Speaker 2: but he is a guy that you really need to
- 55:27Speaker 2: be investing in if you were trying to make a
- 55:29Speaker 2: run at the end here. The worst part here is
- 55:32Speaker 2: that he might get called up in ruin his status
- 55:36Speaker 2: for next year. From a sleeper perspective, yeah, that's really
- 55:39Speaker 2: what's gonna what's gonna happen? Like, so I'm I'm all
- 55:43Speaker 2: in on in Dylan Beaver's here, and you're absolutely right
- 55:45Speaker 2: that the mould ones move and things like that really
- 55:47Speaker 2: opened up for him the rest of this year.
- 55:50Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. And on top of it too, like the
- 55:52Speaker 1: one maybe flaw he had was a little bit too
- 55:56Speaker 1: much swinging miss down in the minors, but he closed
- 55:58Speaker 1: that gap out this year. Strikeout rates down to seventeen
- 56:01Speaker 1: point two percent. The in zone contact rate is up
- 56:04Speaker 1: ten percentage points this year versus last year. The overall
- 56:08Speaker 1: contact rate is up six percentage points. So, I mean,
- 56:13Speaker 1: you really love him to eighty. I don't know if
- 56:15Speaker 1: I could go there. I was thinking more of like
- 56:17Speaker 1: twenty thirty two fifty, but that's still that's like still
- 56:21Speaker 1: that's a fifth rounder, right probably, Oh yeah, definitely, like
- 56:25Speaker 1: he's gonna be a very very hot commodity going into
- 56:28Speaker 1: draft season. So certainly if he's still hanging around, and
- 56:33Speaker 1: he is, because I know on CBS ownership rates like
- 56:35Speaker 1: he's still under ten percent, he's definitely out there, and
- 56:38Speaker 1: lots and lots of fifteen teamers maybe in a few
- 56:41Speaker 1: even ale only leagues, so scoop him up where you
- 56:43Speaker 1: can love Dylan Beavers. Okay, let's get into a few
- 56:47Speaker 1: of those followers. So we've touched in a couple of them.
- 56:49Speaker 1: I think Suarez is maybe a little bit of a
- 56:51Speaker 1: tickdown a Junuarez that is, Will vest is a tick
- 56:54Speaker 1: down considering he just kind of lost his closer role.
- 56:58Speaker 1: The next big drop in value that we have is
- 57:02Speaker 1: the flip side of all those dudes that we talked
- 57:04Speaker 1: about being new closers, old closers going to teams where
- 57:07Speaker 1: they aren't closing anymore. So we have David Bednar, Camillo
- 57:10Speaker 1: Duval both going to the New York Yankees and both
- 57:13Speaker 1: looking like absolute pooh with the rest of the Yankees
- 57:16Speaker 1: since they've gone at the trade deadline, Ryan Helsley going
- 57:20Speaker 1: to New York Mets, and Mason Miller going to the Padre.
- 57:23Speaker 1: So we talked about a little bit outside of May.
- 57:26Speaker 1: I think Miller's probably still rosterable wherever you had him,
- 57:29Speaker 1: But any of those other three still worth hanging on
- 57:31Speaker 1: to outside safeholds leagues.
- 57:34Speaker 2: I think the only one that would be in like
- 57:36Speaker 2: a redraft league would be Bednar. He has not looked good,
- 57:40Speaker 2: but that whole Yankees bullpen, as much as they made moves,
- 57:43Speaker 2: has looked just dreadful. It looks like Definitely's may have
- 57:45Speaker 2: lost that job again. Weaver has not looked much better.
- 57:49Speaker 2: Jake Bird hasn't been to fall like, uh, maybe it's
- 57:52Speaker 2: the best of the worst kind of thing for Bednar here,
- 57:55Speaker 2: so he might actually be back in the saves in
- 57:57Speaker 2: New York. Duval absolutely not. Hellsley and less there's an
- 58:02Speaker 2: injury isn't going to be there. Like I'd be willing
- 58:04Speaker 2: to hold on to him from a hope perspective, because
- 58:07Speaker 2: I could see the the Mets mixing and matching a
- 58:10Speaker 2: little bit to keep Diaz healthy. But you know, overall
- 58:15Speaker 2: most of them you can you can let go. From
- 58:17Speaker 2: a dynasty perspective, I still think Hellsley and Miller are
- 58:20Speaker 2: both you know, worth hold on to keeping around because
- 58:23Speaker 2: you know it wouldn't be a shock that Helsley is
- 58:26Speaker 2: a closure again next year somewhere else.
- 58:28Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, I totally agree there. Okay. Next one that
- 58:32Speaker 1: we have as followers is just kind of those fringy
- 58:35Speaker 1: players who we're getting more regular bats in their old
- 58:38Speaker 1: teams and then since they've been shipped to new teams
- 58:41Speaker 1: are more in part time roles, utility roles. So we're
- 58:46Speaker 1: talking about the likes of Willie Castro going to the Cubs,
- 58:49Speaker 1: Jose Capillero going to the Yankees, will Wagner going to
- 58:53Speaker 1: the Padres and also demoted there too. So are all
- 58:57Speaker 1: those guys droppable for you or any salvage of value
- 59:00Speaker 1: you see?
- 59:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think they're all drop well at
- 59:03Speaker 2: this point. I mean, if if you want to squint
- 59:05Speaker 2: and say, you know, Willie Castro just always seems to
- 59:09Speaker 2: find a way. I don't see the way right now,
- 59:11Speaker 2: but Willie Castro always seems to find a way to
- 59:14Speaker 2: get on the field. You know how many different positions
- 59:19Speaker 2: is he played this year? Right, center, left, short, third,
- 59:25Speaker 2: second and pitcher? Uh, I mean it was only one.
- 59:29Speaker 2: I mean I don't think he was immaculate by any means,
- 59:32Speaker 2: but I think, you know, this is a guy that
- 59:35Speaker 2: will find the lineup a little bit more. But still,
- 59:38Speaker 2: I think most of these guys are guys you can
- 59:41Speaker 2: walk away from.
- 59:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's fair. Even I mean Castro right now,
- 59:44Speaker 1: Raster resource says he's a starter, but if you also
- 59:47Speaker 1: look at it, he's also just kind of given Michael
- 59:50Speaker 1: Bush a little bit of a break given say a
- 59:52Speaker 1: Suzuki a break, given Kyle Tucker a break. That they've
- 59:56Speaker 1: been using him a lot over the first week to
- 59:58Speaker 1: give their guys breaks. But I think he's gonna shift
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: a little bit more into that bench role considering Matt
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Shaw has been very hot for the Cubs, so I
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: think they want to find a way to get that
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: bat into the lineup every day. Last faller, this one hurts.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: It's time to finally pour one out for the twenty
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: twenty five season of Gavin Sheets. My boy, But what
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: a ride it was, because if you had had him
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: up until now, it's been a one hundred and four
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: games with fifteen homers, forty runs, fifty four RBI at
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: two forty eight three twelve four point twenty one slash line,
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: it's one oh seven WRC plus. It was all absolutely free,
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: Like there's no way you paid any draft capital for
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: Gavin Sheets for those fifteen homers. But man, that was
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: fun while it lasted, and it's been nice cold the
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: past month or so late.
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: I say, if you got out of it before July,
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: you were really happy.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: Exactly because it was the batting aver, which was fantastic
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: and he's moved into just a pure pinchhit bench roll
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: for the Padres. But wow, Gavin Sheets, I knew you
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: could do it. So proud of you, and I want
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: to go back and find the episode where he was
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: getting that spot and you were just so unhappy that
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: you knew. I was gonna be able to talk about
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: more Gavin Sheets since this season went on. But this
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: might be it.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: This Gavin Sheets will be back. Like if is there
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: not a more Colorado Rockies player than Gavin Sheets.
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: It's gonna be like the easiest forty taters you've ever seen.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: If he goes to Colorado, it's gonna.
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: Be absolutely and then they're gonna bench him like or
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: something funny like. It's just I'm bold predictions Gavin Sheets
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: is the Rockies Player of the Year next year.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean he's gonna He's still got two more
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: years of our bluft so yeah, they'll move them probably
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: like there's anybody, I mean, Jered Poto versus a j Peler,
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: Like you pick your between those two guys, Like you know,
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: I guess maybe he's gonna be playing the Seattle, but.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm going bold.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: He also might be back because Ryan O'Hearn the DH
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: there now is a free agent that we might just
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: be Gavin sheets again in March. Last April, the un
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: back them up for twenty twenty six.
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: Run them back.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: Okay, we're gonna take a short break. We'll be right back.
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: We just need to rehydrate, stretch a little bit. We'll
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: be back with the normal news and notes after the
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: short break. Stick around, all right, Welcome back, everybody. We
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: did flip the script on you a little bit because
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: of that trade deadline. We had to get through all
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: those trades and their little tentacles that kind of stretched
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: out throughout the league. First, before we get into our
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: normal news and notes, covering some injuries. Cover in we
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: got one promotion and then a couple of fun, little
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: bit more off the beaten path stories to go through.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: So let's get into those injuries first. We've got two
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: major ones in Milwaukee that are going to really shake
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: up the playoff race. First one maybe a little less
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: major because I think it's a little bit more of
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: a hey, uh, Jacob Miskirawski, did you did I see
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: you bump your shin there on the bed in the hotel,
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: because I think you did and you're going to the il.
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: He's hitting the al with a quote unquote tibia contusion.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: But this is just a ploy to save Jacob Missirawski's
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: bullets for the playoffs, isn't it.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: Yeah, it really is, And I mean I actually will
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: go a little bit further. It's a ploy to save
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: them for the playoffs and not give teams more chances
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: to scout them by the playoffs. Because I this is
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: gonna probably be blasphemous, but I'm not that high on Mzowski.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: Relata is probably a lot out there out there. I
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: do think that he has little bit too much control
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: challenges that long term, Like once people kind of get
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: used to him, it's gonna be able to be exploded.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: And so so I think the perfect thing right now
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: for them is just to kind of hold him back,
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: bring him and then, like I don't whether he's starting,
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: whether he's fireman roll or whatever, it's going to be
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: in the playoffs, Like he's going to be be valuable.
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: But I'm concerned with Mazerowski really long term. The biggest
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: thing here is that I was excited to see Logan
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: Henderson coming back up, who actually think is maybe the
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: guy i'd actually rather have in the rotation long term.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: His looks absolutely dominant when he's been up as well.
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: He just hasn't got the same fanfare because he's not
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: blown folks away quite as bad as Misarowski has been.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: He didn't get make the All Star Game after three pitches,
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: So yeah, this is unfortunate about not worried about Miserowski
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: from an injury perspective at all.
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mean I think it's a it's a
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: profile where he is certainly living on that heat. You
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: can kind of see where the big league club just
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: kind of told him, like, hey, just throwing this zone
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: like you throw one hundred and one miles an hour.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: No one's touching this. It's just too nasty. And so
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: as long as he can get away with it, I
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: think it'll work. But any the moment where Missie Rowski's
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: fastball loses a tick or two, then I think we're
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: starting to talk about trouble. So I think I'm maybe
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: not quite as concerned as you are going through the
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: rest of this season and even into twenty six. But
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: if you're looking in terms of long term dynasty value,
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: this isn't This isn't Paul Skins This is not a
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: guy who knows how to dot the edges at all
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: that he's going to he maybe he'll learn it, but
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: he certainly doesn't know it yet. So I think that's
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: fair on Missy Raski. Okay. The next one that we
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: have in Milwaukee, though, this one is a little more concerning.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: Is it relates to Jackson Curio. The youngster is going
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: on the IELT with a strained hamstring after I mean,
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: he was starting to put it together a little bit
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: more where just kind of like last year, he started
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: a little bit slow, but when you kind of looked
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: back up his lines right where it was last year,
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: like honestly right on the dot in terms of seventeen
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: homers eighteen stone bases to seventy six three eleven four
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: seventy four slash line. That's pretty much a copy and
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: paste of his twenty twenty four rookie year. Even the
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: WRC plus is one nineteen last year, one seventeen this year.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: So maybe not quite rounding into that next level where
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: we thought he might turn into like an easy first rounder.
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: Still probably a decent value for where you took him
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: in drafts at the beginning of the second round, just
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: because the floor was so great if you're talking to
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: seventy five average with a twenty five to twenty five profile,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: But we are looking at somebody who, honestly, I can't
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: think of the last time we've talked about the twenty
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: one Jackson twenty one year old Jackson trio together. So
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: I wanted to also check in on here because it
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: doesn't seem like the hamstring is too significant a little
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: bit more of Also, hey, they're trying to find a
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: spot where they can make sure that they've rest him
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: a little bit. He is going to be out maybe
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: two to four weeks, but nothing in terms of like
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: etok parade as you know, types of concerns. So what
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: do you think about Cheerio going forward? Is this kind
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: of like do you think he is capped out at
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: more of this twenty five to twenty five profile or
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: do you think there is another level where he gets
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: into that Ronald Acunya forty forty superstar level.
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I never want to predict a forty
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: forty kind of guy, but like, I think there's more
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: meat on the bone here. Like I he's been a
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: guy that just hasn't seemed to put it together for
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: a full season at this point, like it's been kind
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: of up and down than to your point. You kind
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: of look at but and it's been great like he
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: had in May where hit two thirty seven and hit
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: three bombs full nine, had nine steals where he hit
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: six bombs in May. In April and stole two bases.
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: You know, it's just like he's been just a little
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: all over the place and just the floor has been incredible,
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: but he hasn't put it fully together, and like he's
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: he was actually doing relatively in July and making things
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: look look you know, relatively easy at this point. And
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: so you know, if he can just start to string
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: those things together, I don't think it's out of the
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: question for him to do the damage he's doing. I
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: think the easiest ballpark to do in it. No, but
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: I you know, if I was to say thirty thirty,
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: if you were just put it there, I definitely think
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: that he has that in him. And you know, flashes
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: of something more would not shock me. He's still just
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: twenty twenty one, and this isn't like the end of
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: twenty one he was. He turned twenty one during I
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: think spring training this year and So there is absolutely
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: a guy that I think has an up arrow and
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: he still is a guy that I think we will
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: be talking about as a first rounder in the future.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: And I don't think this injury it's it's not quite
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: the same thing as Miserowski, where like like it didn't
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: you couldn't even see it happened with Misterowski. Sure you'll
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: like actually got hurt on the field, But I don't
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: think it's that bad. I think it's one of those
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: that they're gonna use the opportunity to try to make
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: sure he's healthy, like they're in the driver's seat, and
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: then I'll central they want to have a healthy team
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: going to the playoffs, and they look like one of
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: the better teams in the league this year.
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: Yeah, totally agree. Okay, next injury we have is another
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: one that's really gonna hurt. Considering this dude, he's he
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: really carried my RCL team in the Perts League for
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: a long time at first base, where things have been really,
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: really shallow all season. We're talking Jonathan Ronda from the
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: Tampa Bay Rays, who is hitting the shelf with a
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: fractured wrist and suffered in a collision with Gian Carro
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: Stanton at first base, which, yeah, not many risks are
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: going to win a battle with Gill Carlo Stanton, even
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: if he is only moving you want to talk about
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: slow sprint speeds. That dude is down there, but still
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: enough half to when he's coming down to fracture a
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: wrist as he has with Rondo. But great, great value.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: Also a little bit of a pick, a breakout pick,
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: I think for lots of folks coming into the season,
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: as it was pretty evident that Ronda was gonna get
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: full run for quite a while in Tampa, and he
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: made the most of it. Slashed three sixteen, three ninety four,
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: four seventy eight for a one forty four WRC plus
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: tw homers in one hundred and three games. The risk
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: is concerning, though. You don't ever love to see risk
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: injuries and especially fractured risks unless your corp and Carol
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: I guess, but this is a guy who probably considering
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: the draft costs and lots of leagues, cheap keeper for
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: lots of folks, pretty great dynasty keeper. He's only twenty
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: seven years old. I believe we haven't necessarily gotten like
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: official announcements, I believe, but the race should be in
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: Steinbrenner Field, probably at least for another season plus maybe
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: another like they might be there for a couple of years,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: and that right field porch has certainly helped around in
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: the power department here. So as you can tell, I've
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: really liked this profile, especially you give that you combine
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: it with the park, and then the Rays have just
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: been a better offensive team because of that. He's also
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: just a really really solid hitter. Just he's going to
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: finish third probably in this Well, he's not going to
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: qualify for the batting title, but he's gonna end up
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: probably finishing third behind like Aaron Judge and either Peina
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: or Jacob Wilson. So what do you think about Ronda
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: going you know, more of a long term dynasty keeper situation.
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm probably not as high on Ronda as some
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: others because he is blistering the ball and he has
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: been making that contact. His plate approach is not necessarily
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: the cleanest. I don't think he's always doing the best
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: from what he's picking out to hit. But the biggest
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: concern I have is like I feel like this is
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: a Yandi Diaz clone, which his stat cast always looks
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: better than the ultimate results because he doesn't lift the
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: ball the way that he needs to. He's he's a
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: line drive hitter that randomly will hit home runs and
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: he just doesn't put in the air enough to take
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: full full advantage of the solid contact is And there's
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: nothing wrong with that from a real world baseball perspective.
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: He's a very valuable player in that real world perspective,
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: but in our game, where he isn't a speed guy,
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: you need that to really manifest in in the power.
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: And I think that that's where really his downfall is
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: going to be, is that he's going to be a
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: decent average guy and he's gonna be middling power, like
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: I'm thinking teens power, like Yandi Diaz maybe sniffing at
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: twenty here and there, and it's just gonna always look
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: better than it actually is. Is really my fear with
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: Aronda here. So I'm I don't think it's a bad
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: Dynasty play, but like, keep those expectations in check at
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: the Yandi Diaz expectations, which is the guy that looks
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: like he should be a top thirty hitter and it's
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: a top seventy hitter, Like that's who Yandy Diaz is.
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: I think that's who Jonathan Ronda is, and I'm going
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: to temper the expectations. If that's what you're expecting a
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: seven top seventy eighty hitters, it's going to give you
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: some good power, some some good average, and a number
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: of counting stats. That's fine. That then you should be
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: pretty happy with that. But that's because the cost is
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: low for eminence.
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, I think that's fair. All right, let's go
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: back to Baltimore where we've had lots of conversation today.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: But we're talking Grays and Rodriguez again. So we were
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: talking when he came down with the elbow pain the
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: other week that we were both out, and now we
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: have since learned that he has undergone season ending elbow
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: de bridemint surgery, which I'm looking at this it's so vague.
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: This is even like more concerning, I think than maybe
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: just like Tommy John because if you're looking at what
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: elbow de bride mint surgery can do, it can be
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: just cleaning up scar tissue under like an arthur'scopic surgery situation.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: It could be removing loose bodies. It can also be
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: removing a bone spur and kind of like shaving down
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: a bone spur within the elbow. Given the track record
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: here for Grayson Rodriguez, I almost want to say it
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: probably is the bone spur which is the most significant
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: recovery timeline, because like, if it's just a cleaning up
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: of loose bodies, it looks like I mean, I'm no doctor,
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: but Google is and it's telling me like that would
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: only take you know, four to six weeks to kind
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: of recover from, but if you're removing a bone spur,
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: you're looking more like multiple months. And so totally lost
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: season for Grayson Rodriguez when I know plenty of folks
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: that were drafting him as like a number two starting
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: pitcher back in the spring. Shoulder issues, lat issues, elbow issues,
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: elbow clean up. Now, no way I'm touching him, are
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: you No?
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: I know I'm the king of this and no, I
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: just I just can't do it at this point, Like
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: you just he has just not been able to stay healthy.
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: And when he's healthy, he's a good picture. He really is.
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: But man, I like, you know what, the over under
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: next year for starts is probably like like eight, like yeah,
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: and maybe that's generous, and so like I'm just I'm very,
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: very concerned that, uh, you're not gonna get things back,
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: and I it's gonna be like almost a year and
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: a half fully without really being in competitive games. That's
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: also concerning as well. So yep, fully out Grayson Rodriguez.
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: Love the profile, love the talent, hate how it's ending.
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I totally agree. And you're also he hasn't,
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: like you said, didn't even ever get into like a
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: rehab situation like these are all injuries that cropped up
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: when he was just like doing mound sessions. So that's
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: not encouraging either. Where Honestly, this is starting to look
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: a little bit like Daniel espino Ish where the shoulder
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: goes and just the rest of the kinetic change just
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: blows out on a pitcher. So certainly, I think anywhere
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: Grayson Rogriez can just kind of be left for those
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: waiver wires, and if he does start kind of showing health,
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: then I'll buy back in maybe, but it's going to
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: be a very very long road where to earn that
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: trust back. Okay, next injury we have is this is
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: another one that's kind of lining up to be relatively concerning.
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: We have Austin Riley going back in the aisle with
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: the same intercostal strain that he just had and returned from,
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: just reaggravated that same injury. I think at this point
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: Atlanta probably just shuts him down. Considering it's the reaggravation
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: of an old injury. You're also looking at where they
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: are at in the standings, and it is just not good.
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: There's no reason for Austin Riley to see the field
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: again the season. Let him get healthy, come back next
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: year and try to run it back. Also, I mean,
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: maybe a little extra run for our boy Nacho Alvarez Junior,
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: who's back in the majors. But another kind of just
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: banged up season from Riley. If it's actually just like
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: Jackson Truiro, you kind of take last year's twenty twenty
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: four production put up against twenty twenty five for Riley,
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: they're pretty much mirror images of each other. He is
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: who he is in terms of two fifty five two
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: sixty hitter, you know, around a one tennis WRC plus
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: nowadays what would pace out to a round thirty homers,
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: but one hundred and ten games last year, one hundred
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: and two games this year. What are you doing with
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: Austin Riley going into next year, he's going to be
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: twenty nine. Aged twenty nine, turn twenty nine at the
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: beginning of the season in April. But it is kind
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: of a profile where he was an all masher, kind
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: of a stiff dude. Honestly, this isn't the type of
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: profile that usually ages very well.
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I know, I'm I don't think age
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: is the biggest issue yet. To give us another three
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: or four years before I start to get concerned there,
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: But like second straight year of injury after having you know,
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: missed a total what like eight games three years before that,
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: So like it's it's a really perplex scene, and I'm
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: with you. I think they have to show him down
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: the rest this year because the guys signed a ten
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: year contract like not too long ago, and so you
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: know he's got another what seven or eight years to
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: go on the on that deal, so they absolutely have
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: to get him healthy. He's like, maybe that's one of
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: the saving graces. I see that, Like, this is the
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: guy They're gonna do absolutely everything. I don't think this
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: is a Chris Davis situation where he's like off the
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: map at your point when he plays he's good, and
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: yeah the number has been a little down the last
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: two years, but he's also been battling injuries. So like,
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: assuming he was healthy, you know, fully healthy, I think
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: he still is that thirty homer, one hundred rbi two
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: sixty ish two fiftiest bat. You know, it's maybe trny
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: more to Ennio Sores profile than you know, something something greater,
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: which that's not bad, but we're talking maybe more a
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: fifth to seventh rounder with with with some of that
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: risk that has the potential to do more. So I'm
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: I'm not fully out on on Riley, but like you
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: have to bake in the risk here, you just have
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: to expect maybe one hundred and twenty games from from
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: Riley and if you get more, be happy with it.
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: So think they're gonna get him healthy. I'm not fully
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: out on Riley, but I think there's a big biggle
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: warning sign going to the next year.
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I'm right there, which also means I
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: don't think either of us are going to be rostering
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: too many Austin right, just because the draft price is
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: not going to fall to there.
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: I mean, I wouldn't be surprised to see him still
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: going like the fourth.
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so, just because third base is still
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: going to continue to be pretty shallow, and I think
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: even with Manny Machado's like fantastic season, people are going
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: to see that age next to him and really knock
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: him back. Suarez same sort of thing. So uh yeah,
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: it's going to be dicey kind of figuring out what
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: to do at the hot corner in twenty twenty six. Again, Okay,
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: let's move on to our next injury. This concerns the
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: Chicago Cubs, who maybe we should have put the team
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: on their on the fallers, Jed Hoyer just falling flat
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: on his face. I think at the deadline, considering this team, well,
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: I guess maybe I should focus on Soroka first. Makes
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: one outing was their big acquisition at the deadline, third
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: inning bump shoulder. Honestly, this might be the end of
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: Michael Soroka's season two because this guy who has had
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: multiple shoulder issues as he was with Atlanta, and the
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: way that he kind of left and was very quickly
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: subsequently placed on the al not exactly a great kind
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: of sequence of events there. But I do want to
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: shift the conversation back here to the Cubs because what
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: are they doing, Like you have Kyle Tucker for one year,
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: Jed Hoorr did get an extension somehow and then just
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: kind of goes out and they're sitting on so much
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: trade capital and they just totally biffed it. This is
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: a team that's gonna I mean, I know we're not
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: exactly the most positive like Cubs people around here, but
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: this they're slated for a first round exit, right. You
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: can't what they've got on the on the team is
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: not going to hold up against the likes of the Mets,
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: the Dodgers, the Brewers, even the Padres, the Phillies in
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: the playoffs, and it's probably a wasted opportunity with what
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: they got out Kyle Tucker and probably career year out PCA.
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: So what do you think is this? I'm baffled by
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: what the Cubs did at the deadline, are you?
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: I absolutely am, Because you know you look at you
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: talk about career years, right you're looking here, Michael Bush.
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: Our argument on a career year PCA, probably career Carson
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: Kelly absolutely a career year like that. They they're hitting
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: above their capability. But they're a good, good team and
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: you know the bullpen has held together really well and
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: you know, we love you know, uh Andrew Kittridge making
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: it over there, so it's, you know, a good move.
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: But this this rotation is just so rough. It is.
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: That's that's what their downfall is going to be. And
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: bringing Soroka over was like a consolation prize, Like it
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: wasn't a big move. They didn't, you know, go after
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: the big stars like Merril Kelly would have been like
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: what you needed to do here, and so rolling out
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: Matthew Boyd and Colin Ray and Ben Brown and hopefully
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: Imon Haga is gonna be, you know, the guy he
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: could he could be, Like that's what you're hoping for.
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: So it's it's concerning. I think that they did kind
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: of botch this one, and I'm I'm thinking they're playing
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: with a house of cards the rest of the season,
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: and yes, the first round exit might actually be the
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: best case scenario. I'm sitting here going are they going
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: to make the playoffs? Because they've got a REDS team
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: that's not too chairly far behind him doing some damage.
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: They have the padres in the Mets definitely breathing down
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: their their Okay, let's not go that far, but like
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: I don't you know, I don't know if their playoff odds
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: are right right now, but I feel like whatever they
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: are is overstated. Uh, here we go. Playoff odds for
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: the Cubs right now are ninety seven percent, which feels hot.
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: I feel significantly high because I think there's some other
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: teams that can definitely make a run with them, and
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: I think they're gonna be the vulnerable team the rest
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: of the season.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: Yeah, the one thing about the Reds is the strength
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: of scheduled on the stretch is brutal, and so that
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: is why they're kind of hanging in it. That's why,
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: like it was a little weird when they were just
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: like I think there were like two games out of
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: the wild Card and their playoff odds were like below
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: ten percent. Still because it's a rough stretch for the
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: Reds down the stretch, but I agree that it's going
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: to be. It's just such a blown opportunity for the Cubs,
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: where like I think the reason I'm really negative on
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: them so much is that like this team could be
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: the Dodgers, that could be the Mets. It has a
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: lot of the pieces that those teams, yes, in terms
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: of like the national presence, the ownership of their own network,
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: the just all of Wrigleyville being built out and owned
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: by the It's like there's a lot of powder that
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: they could be using that they don't, and it's just
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: kind of perplexing, especially like as a Cardinal slash White
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: Sox fan, where Like again, those constraints that those owners
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: the ownerships groups put on the teams are a little
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: bit like self owning, like, but they don't also have
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: the tier of being able to get into the type
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: of money and contracts that the Cubs certainly could. So
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: it's a it's an odd franchise, I would say.
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: It is, and you're just waiting like this is the
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: year they make the big splash and free agency and
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: go all in. Nope, it doesn't happen.
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: Nope. Okay, let's get on to our next injury, because
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: this one does hurt a little bit. We have Tommy
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: Edmin going to the iel with a sprained ankle, and
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: you saw it right off the bat. He twisted it
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: like on on base hit and was rounding the base.
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: I believe it was against the Cardinals this week, so
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: it was it stood out right away. This is maybe
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: a victory lap we shouldn't have taken in mid April,
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: and now that I'm looking back on it, because I
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: think we probably did it around. You can see right
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: after like April sixteenth, the first twenty games, he had
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: popped six homers, hit two sixty three and was still
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: kind of like all the projections were putting him in
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: like a twenty five to twenty five season. One thing
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: that we might have overlooked is out of those first
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: twenty games, six of them came against the Nationals and
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: the Rockies, and another three came against the Braves, who
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: we didn't know were bad yet. And so there's a
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: little bit of like just that in the mix. Because
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: when you look at up at it, you want to
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: talk about another guy who just kind of found his
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: level by the time the season were on. It was
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: Tommy Edmond. He's right back where he was in terms
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: of battling constant injuries, not hitting the ball very hard,
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: eighty ish WRC plus a little bit of pop. No
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: speed though, because I think the Dodgers are trying to
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: limit him, and so I think I'm back on the
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: outs with Tommy Edmund. What about you?
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: I think so like maybe the worst thing for Tommy
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: Edmund was the power barage he did in the playoffs
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: last year, because like that just raised the expectations doing
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: that for the Dodgers team, Like that's who. That was something.
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: But now like Edmunds, it's it's not it's a weird
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: injury history here, Like it's not like one of those
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: guys where it's like a core injury all the time
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: or they really have the like leg injuries he has,
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: like wrist and ankle issues like and and those are
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: pretty important when you play baseball. I get like your
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: backs and all the other like, but that like it's
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: it's odd. This seems like that's always what it is,
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: like the soft tissue type of ligament injuries that are
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: just kind of draining away. And for all the talent
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: that he has and he can play all over the field,
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: he's you know, gold glove in his past. Like there's
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: a lot to like here from Edmund, but man, it
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: just seems like every time he tries to get back
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: and finally getting trenched somewhere, it just does not happen.
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: You know. Being a Cardinals fan and seeing them giving
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: away for peanuts, I was not happy about that, but
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: it just seems like maybe they did know something that
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: the Dodgers were. I think the Dodgers probably knew it too,
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: and they just had the resources to take a chance
- 1:27:21Speaker 2: on it. But yeah, I think the edmund you know,
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: I it's outside of the positional eligibility. The value is
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: not very much there anymore.
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: No, No, because it's actually like it's a profile. When
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: you have that position on eligibility, you actually want a
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: little bit more of like that Wheely cashtro set up,
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: where it's more speed, more average, because it just kind
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: of helps paper over things where if it's just middling
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: power and the speed's not there and he's hitting like
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: two forty, it's just really not even worth kind of
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: keeping around at that point. Okay, well we're out of
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: the injury kind of weeds. Now we have one we
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: want to talk about. And this is another guy who
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: I was kind of putting together to roster early. I
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: think you actually this week wrote some denigrating things about him.
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: So we have a little bit of a disagreement, which
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: doesn't happen too often in this podcast. We're talking Cjkafis
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: of the Cleveland Guardians, who was promoted and is playing
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: a combination of first base and right field, essentially just
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: taking over Nolan Jones's job because Nolan Jones just does
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: not look like a big leaguer and so Cafus is
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: stepping into that role. At Triple A. Before his call up,
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: was hitting three hundred and three ninety five thirty nine
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: for a one fifty one WRC plus fourteen homers in
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: eighty six games. He's twenty three years old, in twelve
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: plate appearances, sixteen plate appearances. He's got four more today
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: and put together two more hits, so that's going to
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: help me. It's up to the average, but it's a
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: little bit more of an elvak rate. But again we're
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: only talking sixteen plate appearances. I liked him just because
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: he's never not mashed throughout the minor leagues. Double digit
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: walk rates, the k's I could live with because of that,
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: where if you're mashing, you're walking. I'm okay with it.
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: But what flaw do you see in him that you
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: don't like Cafas?
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: Yeah, because you're absolutely right. Like when I first started
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: looking deeper into him, like he's always hit everywhere, it's like, okay,
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: this is good. And then the thing that really concerned.
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: There's two things, Like there is definitely a little platoon
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: play in the profile. He definitely has some platoon risk there.
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: But the bigger thing is like he seems to have
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: feasts on fastballs in the minors and just absolutely crushed them.
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: And I don't have it in front of me, I
- 1:29:41Speaker 2: pull it up, but I saw some stats that basically
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: I'm from a breaking ball perspective, he was hit like
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: two hundred, like with one homer, Like he has not
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: hit breaking balls at all this season, and I think
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: that's really that's the kind of thing gets exploited quickly
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: in the majors, and if you have tune risk, you
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: can't hit the breaking ball, which means there's a big
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: old hole somewhere in your swing. And I'm not convinced
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: on the full time playing time. I just think that
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: at this point they have nothing else to prove in
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: the minors and so like they're gonna kind of shuffle
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: them around. Like there's just like too many concerns for me,
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: uh for this year. I think long term that you know,
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: I'm still interested in intrigued by Capus, but he still
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: has some development to do. And that's why for at
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: least for this year. I'm not I'm not buying. I
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: think long term he's still maybe a top eight to
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: ten first base outfieldish prospect, but I'm it's still not
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: a guy that I'm like jumping out of my C
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: two after because I just think it's too easy to exploit.
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's fair because that I mean there
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: is now that I look at it, there is. Honestly,
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: That's what Nolan Jones's problem is too, is that like
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: he could only hit fastballs. Actually he can't even hit
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: fastballs anymore, so well, really do it for you? Yeah?
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: That will? So that is that's an intriguing thing with
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: Cafus is maybe to keep an eye on it too,
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: if like you're also looking for that corner turn into
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: something where it's a dependable star. If he starts finding
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: an approach against sliders. That was always kind of like
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: Matt Olsen's like when he jumped to that next level
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: of being an upper tier all star was learning to
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: hit sliders and having an approach that we'll see if
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: Cafus can learn that at the big leagu global only
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: twenty three years old, so plenty of time to still
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: fully develop. But there's two routes that you can see
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: where you can go. Now, yep, Okay, let's get into
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: some other news that first last week, when we were
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: going through and rattling through the entire show, we actually
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: didn't even have like a normal subject because there's just
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: so much trade deadline and injury talk to get through.
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: This was one of the stories that we didn't get
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: to talk about that I thought would be a little
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: fun to bring back up. There was a little bit
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: of a spat between the Philadelphia Phillies and Rob Manfred
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: as Manfred has been going around to these various locker
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: rooms and trying to do a little spiel where he's
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: also just totally like giving away what he's trying to
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: do in terms of beating the players in this upcoming
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: labor battle, is just trying to buddy up to them
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: and find a different route to talk directly to some
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: of the players that might not have gotten their bigger
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: chunk of the pie yet and telling them, hey, you
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: could get a bigger chunk, YadA, YadA, yadda. I think
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: we all kind of know how labor relations and owners
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: go in not only Baseball but America at large. So
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: like I'm not sure how well Rob Manfred's message has
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: been landing, but we know it certainly did not land
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: with one Bryce Harper. And this is a what of
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: a fantastic kind of like story here that apparently when
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: he went into he being Rob Manfred went into the
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: Phillies locker room, they were not necessarily having anything to
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: do with that message, and eventually Bryce Harper came up
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: to him and told him to get the f out,
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: and Rob Bnfred said, I will not get the f out.
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: And also within the relays of these stories, Bryce Harper
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: was holding a bat throughout this too, which is kind
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: of intriguing, but it's just also a pretty cool turn
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: I think in terms of Harper has always become more
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: and more likable. I think as he's kind of been
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: in Philadelphia between I love all the Fanatics gear that
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: he wears, the Philly Fanatic gear, not the Fanatics the
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: other you know, corporate unity that we denigrate a lot.
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: But this is kind of Max Scherzer took this turn too,
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: where he became like a big labor person during the
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: last battle, and so any thoughts here in terms of
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: like where we're going with this labor battle after the
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: end of this CBA, because it's looking like it's going
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: to be pretty contentious and it's gonna involve some pretty
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: in sense personalities between the likes of Bryce Harper's and
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: Mechschuers yours is against your Manfred's as well as like
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: some of the former players that he's been reeling into
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: between like C. C. Sabbathia, Mark de Rosa was apparently
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: in this meeting and was trying to like back up
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: Manfred as well too. So it's been just a fascinating
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: story to see kind of where the dividing lines are
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: starting to form for this CBA battle, because it's gonna
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: be very contentious, and honestly, I'm very concerned that we're
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: gonna lose big chunks of baseball because they do seem
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: to be, just like in other realms of this country nowadays,
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: just a polarization that has happened where it's gonna be
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: tough to find the middle ground.
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like this is some kind of folk
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: tale where just every time you hear about it just
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: gets larger and larger and more ridiculous. Like I don't
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: really know what happened. There's some type of confrontation and
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: Harper standing up like it was like first was like
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: at the end of the meeting, he kind of had
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: a hard discussion with them and they went their separate ways.
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: It's like at the beginning of the meeting that he
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: was got a bat like. I don't know what actually happened,
- 1:35:04Speaker 2: but I think the takeaway is exactly what you said,
- 1:35:07Speaker 2: is that the last time we went through this and
- 1:35:10Speaker 2: there was the lockout risk, which you know did come
- 1:35:13Speaker 2: to fruition, there felt like there was a lot more
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: to lose, Like baseball was not in the same space
- 1:35:19Speaker 2: that it is today. And I feel like both sides,
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: players and owners see that the game is in a
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: really healthy spot and they aren't concerned with the health
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: of the game. They're more concerned with taking care of themselves.
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: And that's the worst thing for the fans because I
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: think that there is a high high likelihood of a
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: lockout here and it's not gonna be the shortest one
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: and the only losers they are the fans, and that's
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: that's unfortunate. And also from a fantasy perspective, be careful
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: in your rebuild leagues. You got to go for it
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: next year because you don't know what the year after
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: that looks like and so it's a really interesting dynamic
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: of don't sell too early in your dynasty keeper leagues
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: because you might be waiting for two years.
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: That's a good point. That is going to be fascinating
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: how we handle that going into next year, because that
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: is who knows like and what kind of how many
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: games we might get in twenty twenty six is another
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: factor because if you look at like the sixty game
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: season from twenty twenty, you can actually look at like
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: some of the historic performances that happened in like our leagues.
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: It was bananas. It was just a total crapshoot because
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: over sixty games, anybody can win in terms of then
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: you layered on the whole COVID thing. But I mean
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: you just look at some of the ups and downs.
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: I mean, if you had had twenty games of Tommy
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: Edmond in April, you'd be sitting pretty pretty pretty in
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: your standings, you know, in a sixty game season. So
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: it will be really how do you play that going
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: into the tail end of next year. So I will
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: actually mark that down. I mean, assuming we're still going
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: as a podcast. I would hope we still are, but.
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: Yeah, hope you know, I hope that you stick this out.
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: I mean I might hold pull a hammy here there,
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: but I can make it off the injured list.
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: Thanks thanks for getting in there. So okay, we are
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: going to wrap up with a little bit of card
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: news before we take a break to talk about the
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: Player of the Month PC for July. So, first bit
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: of news that we have is that we were worried
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: about this when TOPS Chrome came out and we discovered
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: that PCA Pete crow Barmstrong and Cal Rowley, who were
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: both kind of neck and neck with Aaron Judge and
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: sho Hey Otani for the MVP, we're not in the
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: regular TOPS Chrome because they were doing the MVP buybacks again.
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: Tops in the meantime has announced that TOPS Chrome Update
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: cards will work, so the same thing will apply. It's
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: just gonna honestly, the price of TOPS Update TOPS Chrome
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: Update is going to shoot through the roof because of
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: this because right now, I mean, the Aaron Judge injury
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: that happened was pretty brief, but we'll see how it
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: affects this play going forward. Cal Raley's also kind of
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: cooled off a little bit too, so it's they're still
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: pretty neck and neck. Pete kar Armstrong is also cooled
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: off a little bit, but in terms of war, he
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: is starting to pull ahead of Otani because of the defense.
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: So we're gonna kind of see how those things settle.
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: A little bit of what we talked about with the
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: Cubs might come to play there for Pete kar Armstrong,
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: but you also have the likes of Fornamo Tatist juniors
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: entering this discussion. Bobby Witt junior, Kyle Schwarber, Jose or
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: Carldo Perdomo is eleventh right now in total war in
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: the league, which won't be in there, but that's kind
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: of fascinating. So there's lots of other different ways this
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: can kind of dip and dive over the next two months.
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: So what do you think about this? Do you think
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: it is a little bit too cheesy of tops to
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: also include update or do you think it's the right move.
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: I think it's the right move, but it is an
- 1:39:00Speaker 2: unfortunate move because it takes little bit of the fun
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: out of it, which the fun with it being in
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: Chrome was you didn't know who was gonna be and
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: so you're like, okay, should I you know, hoard my
- 1:39:12Speaker 2: Aaron Judge cards or should I hold onto these? Whereas
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: when the timing of Chrome update, you probably already know
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: the MVP, and so it's just like up pull this guy,
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: Like it takes a little bit of that kind of
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: marketplay out of it. Like I said, I'm actually looking
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: at the MVP odds that just as of today, and
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: you know, Aaron Judge has the decent lead on Kyle
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: Rally from like a betting perspective, Otani has the lead
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: in the NL, but it's actually Shorber who's moving up
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: that list as far as Vegas beliefs, and then PCA
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: behind him. And so Shorber actually is the one that
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: maybe is a little intriguing because I think he was
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: actually in Chrome. Maybe I'm wrong. So I think that
- 1:39:54Speaker 2: that is actually the really the interesting wrinkles that somebody
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: else is kind of sneaking in here. Maybe Tony gets
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: in the end or you know, slows down. I think
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: there's also there's risks for Otani and Judge, and I
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: would say kind of it's it's what we saw with
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: like Albert Poolholes and even Mike Trout, like there's this
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: like fatigue MVP voter fatigue thing that goes on where
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: there's like I want a new new guy, and so
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: I'm not certain that Otani and Judge, even if they
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: deserve a merit where we'll be slammed dunks this year.
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's very fair. So and Colee Schwarber
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: cards are very very cheap, so certainly it could pay
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: off handsomely if that does come to fruition, because he's
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: in common boxes everywhere.
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: So I'm thinking that that might be a really sneaky play.
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: If I'm in the diamond boxes or something like that
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: and pick up a big old stack of Schwarber chromes
- 1:40:48Speaker 2: or some numbered things like that, that might be a
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: sneaky play right now, because the end of the day,
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: if you buy a low numbered Shwarber for five bucks,
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: and you can sell it for five bucks and then
- 1:40:59Speaker 2: in the off season most likely so say you heard
- 1:41:01Speaker 2: it here, first go pick up some college forward cards.
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: Yeah, or even just snagging like two dollars worth of like,
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: you know, eight base cards like that can pay off
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: pretty handsomely, considering if those would pay back at twenty
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: bucks apiece, So something to consider over the next few months.
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: Then we have the baseball card calendar for the releases
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: coming up as we're speaking here. On August sixth actually
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: had the release of twenty twenty five TOPS Archived Signature
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: Series Active Players Edition. If not familiar with this product
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: is it's a one card box that goes for I
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: think they're going for like one hundred and thirty dollars
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: nowadays they used to be going for like eighty, which
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: is crazy considering you get one card, one shot. And
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: what it is is TOPS with these buybacks, they take
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: cards that were out in the market, bring them back,
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: put a new stamp on them, have the player sign them,
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: and turn in a bunch of common cards into one
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: of ones out of nowhere, which is I think it's
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: kind of fun, but like when you're paying one hundred
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: and thirty dollars for this lottery ticket, not so fun.
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not. And then you gotta be really careful
- 1:42:06Speaker 2: because I've seen some of like these, like first Bowman's
- 1:42:09Speaker 2: they get bought back and then numbered of like one
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: of one and you're like I found the one on
- 1:42:12Speaker 2: one of like you're like whoa, whoa wait wait, like
- 1:42:15Speaker 2: it got broke out because they come in uh uh
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: one touch with a seal on it. Somebody breaks down
- 1:42:20Speaker 2: the seal all of a sudden, like you if you
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: don't see the stamp or whatever, like look what I hit.
- 1:42:24Speaker 2: And it's like, oh no, it's it's it's not it's
- 1:42:26Speaker 2: it's a it's a one to bee.
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: Plus we have seen in the past where Tops will
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: take like multiple of the same card and make multiple
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: one of ones over several years. With this, yeah, so
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: like it's a it is just it has really jumped
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: the shark.
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: Like I thought it's some Tops quality control. It's just
- 1:42:45Speaker 2: for sure here.
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: I've had some fun with these over the past, but
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: like I mean, honestly, I've picked up one of one
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: Ozzie's of these. This we're talking Active Players Edition here,
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: which is even worse honestly than the Retired Players edition
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: because the entire players is usually chok full of Hall
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: of Famers. But like I paid eighty bucks for the
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: ones of ones of Ozzi and that's a sure fire,
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: very collectible Hall of Famer. When you're paying one hundred
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: and thirty bucks up front. There are otanis and stuff
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: buried in there.
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: But like, yes, it's thin though it's thin, so yes,
- 1:43:16Speaker 2: So that is the released today.
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: Next week we got a pair of releases. On eight twelve,
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: we have twenty twenty Tops Finest. On eight thirteen, we
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: have twenty twenty five Tops Prism eight fifteen. This one
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: got pushed back again. It's the second time I believe
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: it's been pushed back.
- 1:43:30Speaker 2: We've been some of us for a while.
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: Yeah, Panini Boys. This summer twenty twenty five, eight twenty nine,
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: we have twenty twenty five Panini Impeccable. There's still a
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: lot of cards coming because we have not seen Alan
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: and Genter come out, which usually is a spring release.
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: We'll have Tops update coming out soon. We'll have Chrome
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: update coming out soon. We'll have Stadium Club coming. There's
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: a lot that's going to be backed into the second
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: or honestly last quarter of twenty twenty five, so releases
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: that will be coming on that schedule. All Right, we're
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: going to take another short break, but we will be
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: back to discuss the July Player of the Month PC.
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: So stick around, all right, Welcome back everybody to Act three.
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: This is probably gonna be our favorite act because we
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: love doing this. Every month we are doing the Player
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: of the Month PC. This is also an important time
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: to go into those show notes or go to rasball
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: dot com. Actually go to both. Go to into the
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: show notes. Look at all the hard work I put
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: in there to link all the stuff out for you.
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: It uh, it's not exactly easy, so you can check
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: that out. But do go to rasball dot com look
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: at the post related to this pod as well, because
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: not only will you be able to see all of
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: those show notes and be able to support us at
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: ras ball with a subscription if you would like to
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: help you win your fantasy leagues down the stretch, but
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: on the post, we'll have pictures of all of the
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: cards that we're going to talk about here, all in
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: one spot, so you can peruse them, look at them
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: and not just have to listen to us talk about
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: trying to describe what these cards look like. If you're
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: not familiar with what we're doing here and it's your
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: first time listening to this pod. What we do on
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: a monthly basis is we go back and align with
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: what MLB's player the month choices were for the Hitter
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: of the month, the Picture of the month, and the
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: Rookie of the month to make a pod personal collection
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: PC selections that we put into our little collection, our
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: little haul this month. We actually we were pretty good
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: about not spending tons of money we had the chance to.
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: Sometimes we do go big, sometimes we go home and
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: sometimes go with some smaller base cards, stuff that you
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: can actually build out and collect, so you can put
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: together a little bit of a PC on the side
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: to follow along with this pod. I think we've got
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: some fun selections this month because when's the last time
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: we've had won these discussions and we haven't had Aaron
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: Judge or show Heyo Tani featured.
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: Yeah, Like it's it's fun when I don't have to
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: go back and look me like have I picked this
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: card before? Like there's a little of that this time,
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: but really just for two guys, And yeah, it's I've
- 1:46:24Speaker 2: got enough Otani Auto's my collection and I've cheated over
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: time to try to get like some dual like Otani
- 1:46:29Speaker 2: trouts in there. Like there's some fun stuff. Don't get
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: me wrong, But to your point, I think we're a
- 1:46:34Speaker 2: little bit more budget conscious this time around, but it
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: was still just as fun.
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: Yes, I agree. So we're going to start with the
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: al side because the hitter and the rookie was the
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: same and this is a guy who we probably should
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: have given flowers to last week because another story we
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: kind of glossed over in another mayor than Pod last
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: week because we just didn't have the time. We're talking
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: the athletic first baseman Nick Kurtz, who not only had
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: that amazing maybe the best offensive game of all time
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: for homers, six for six with all six of those
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: were extra base hits eight rbi. I mean the fourth
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: homer did come off of a position player, so there's
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: a little bit of an aster.
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: Hey, but he got robbed of a fifth homer because
- 1:47:23Speaker 2: he one of those doubles. There was like feet away
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: from being a homer. And like when you're talking about
- 1:47:28Speaker 2: greatest game in history, if that would have gone out,
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: this would have been like the greatest hitting game in history,
- 1:47:33Speaker 2: no questions.
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely, and has been electric, totally on fire, exactly
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: what I think we both expected. Also, I'm just kind
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: of glad that in my posts I don't have to
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: answer any more questions about whether or not to drop
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: Nick Kurtz, because if anybody did, whoopsie, because in July
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: he hit three ninety five with eleven bombs and a
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: fourteen thirty three ops his slugging for the month nine
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: fifty three in July, as he is just absolutely a
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: glittering the ball, probably what like a second rounder for
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: fantasy next year, probably at this pace is gonna be
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: a hot commodity. And the A's will still be playing
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: in that minor league ballpark in Sacramento, So gonna be
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: a pretty significant player for our fantasy game. The card
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: prices are starting to shoot through the roof through Nick Kurtz.
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: We did cover him last month because he was our
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: Rookie of the Month in June. But we've got two
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: new cards here for July. So what direction did you go?
- 1:48:33Speaker 2: Yeah, to your point, we covered last month. We were
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: a little bit higher in. We got some of that
- 1:48:37Speaker 2: base stuff that you have to have in any PC
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: of you know, first bowman type, that kind of stuff.
- 1:48:42Speaker 2: And so I want to go a little bit further
- 1:48:43Speaker 2: off the beaten path and everyone in while we'd like
- 1:48:46Speaker 2: to dig into this and drop down to the minor
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: league cards. And I'm not talking like your bowman products here.
- 1:48:52Speaker 2: We're talking about the good old choice products here, which is,
- 1:48:55Speaker 2: you know, one of the one of the most common
- 1:48:57Speaker 2: providers of minor league team cards. And we're going with
- 1:49:00Speaker 2: his twenty twenty five Las Vegas Aviators Choice card, which
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: is you know, you can get an eBay for eight
- 1:49:09Speaker 2: dollars by it. Now, it's not even doesn't even have
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: a number on it. It's just a straight card of
- 1:49:14Speaker 2: Nick Kurtz, a little bit of stats from Stockton Midland
- 1:49:17Speaker 2: in twenty twenty four. Actually, never mind, there's card number
- 1:49:21Speaker 2: twenty one just barely hidden in there, so card number
- 1:49:23Speaker 2: twenty one, But it's just as much of an advertisement
- 1:49:27Speaker 2: for the Aviators team with all the websites and logos
- 1:49:29Speaker 2: and things on it is it is for the actual
- 1:49:33Speaker 2: card himself, and he just listed as an infielder on
- 1:49:36Speaker 2: the front of the car, just if like Nick Kurtz
- 1:49:38Speaker 2: is not just not playing across the enfield folks, this
- 1:49:41Speaker 2: is this is a first basement. But I also just
- 1:49:44Speaker 2: love the difference between like the minor league jerseys, which
- 1:49:48Speaker 2: you're basically like it's this is a home white with
- 1:49:51Speaker 2: an LV on it for Las Vegas and nothing else
- 1:49:53Speaker 2: like basic it's gonna be Aviator's actually have a pretty
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: cool logo, so that's also fun as well, and so
- 1:50:01Speaker 2: just a fun, you know, oddball card that you know,
- 1:50:04Speaker 2: if Nick Kurtz's career keeps going the way it's going,
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: like it could be just a kind of fun little
- 1:50:09Speaker 2: thing to have, you know, down the road, because he
- 1:50:11Speaker 2: did not play many games in the minors for any teams,
- 1:50:17Speaker 2: let alone Las Vegas here before he made it up
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: to the Athletics.
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: Yeah. And I mean it's a sharp design for a
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: minor league card too, a little bit of a throwback
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: to the nineteen eighty two tops design with the kind
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: of like almost like racing stripes. I'm not exactly, but
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: just kind of there's pervy stripes and so like. It's
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: a it's a sharp little design for a minor league card.
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: Usually they're not exactly well put together, but I like
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: this card.
- 1:50:46Speaker 2: Great pick yep, So where did you go? Did you?
- 1:50:49Speaker 2: Did you go big with Nick Kurtz?
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: No, this one is gonna it has some pretty high
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: prices because it hasn't been officially released yet. It is
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: a tops Now card. I'm looking at the twenty twenty
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: five tops Now number four sixty four. It's gonna be
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: a rookie card for Nick Kurtz. It's to commemorate the
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: four homer game. I think you had to go this route.
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: It's gonna be a crazy huge print run. I think
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: it's like fifty six thousand or something like that. Insane,
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: And so you're looking at a very common card. The
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: pre sales on them are pretty hefty. It's actually more
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: than you would have paid directly through TOPS. But I
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: think it will come down over time. I think if
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: you are starting a Nick Kurts PC though, this card's
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: got to be in there to commemorate his historic four
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: for four homer game and is going to be a
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: card to where like most tops Now card our cards
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: are not worth the money or worth the cardboard they're
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: printed on, you know, just because they don't really commemorate
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: anything that cool. You know, maybe it's like a two
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: homer game or a walk off homer, but like, yeah,
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: it's not anything to the level of this kind of
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: four homer game. So you got your kind of classic
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: tops Now design where it's futuristic but still kind of
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: harkens back to some of the standard TOPS designs. But
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: I think you're not going to be able to go
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: wrong with this card. It's going to be a pretty
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: solid five to ten dollars rookie card as long as
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: it's in existence and Nick Kurtz is around.
- 1:52:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's a great call because there, to me,
- 1:52:17Speaker 2: tops Now there's certain there's probably two key reasons to
- 1:52:21Speaker 2: have tops Now cards. It's these historic games, so like
- 1:52:24Speaker 2: the Atani fifty to fifty, the Poohole seven hundred home run,
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: those kind of things are just cool to have a
- 1:52:31Speaker 2: card that commemorates that. I think the other side of
- 1:52:34Speaker 2: it is if you like to go to games and
- 1:52:37Speaker 2: something happens in the game that you're at, that's just
- 1:52:40Speaker 2: kind of a fun way to collect mebe a little
- 1:52:42Speaker 2: rainbow of that, that kind of thing. I know I've
- 1:52:44Speaker 2: done that with a game I've gone to before. It's
- 1:52:46Speaker 2: just kind of a fun little niche in the hobby
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: be like, hey, I was there, I witnessed this. That
- 1:52:50Speaker 2: that kind of thing. Usually not like a two homer game.
- 1:52:53Speaker 2: It's usually there's something else going going on that makes
- 1:52:56Speaker 2: it worth it. Right. But I think this is a
- 1:52:58Speaker 2: great call because I this is the kind of card
- 1:53:01Speaker 2: like for Now you have to pay pay up more
- 1:53:03Speaker 2: than sticker price. In like three months, you're gonna find
- 1:53:07Speaker 2: them all over the place for like two dollars because
- 1:53:09Speaker 2: they much printing, and then over time it's gonna go
- 1:53:11Speaker 2: back up. So it's it's gonna be a fun one.
- 1:53:13Speaker 2: But yeah, you're gonna be able to pick these up
- 1:53:15Speaker 2: left and right, because the thing with stops now is
- 1:53:17Speaker 2: people are searching for the parallels, and so they will
- 1:53:20Speaker 2: buy them in bulk. They will buy ten, fifty, one
- 1:53:23Speaker 2: hundred of them, and then they'll get their parallel. Hope
- 1:53:26Speaker 2: they hope they get their parallel or something like that,
- 1:53:28Speaker 2: and that's where you know the fun is. And then
- 1:53:31Speaker 2: they throw these all in a bargain bin or something
- 1:53:33Speaker 2: like that. They flood eBay those kind of things, and
- 1:53:36Speaker 2: the prices drop pretty quickly right after the release.
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: Yeah, official print run on that card, it's gonna be
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: fifty three thousand,
