- 0:02There is a famous story in the Mahabharata which has a profound
- 0:06meaning when it comes to the application of any power of
- 0:09action in the world, including the power to create thought
- 0:13formations. One of the protagonists in the
- 0:16Great War that was fought at Kurukshetra was Arjuna.
- 0:21He was the greatest warrior of his time.
- 0:24This story, however, relates to his son Abhimanyu.
- 0:28Arjuna had been teaching Abimanyu all the various
- 0:31stratagems of warfare, but had been unable to fully complete
- 0:36his training. At one point the opposing army
- 0:40formed up in a specific formation on the battleground,
- 0:44which no one present at that moment could Pierce and defeat.
- 0:48Arjuna was away, taking care of other urgent matters in the
- 0:51battle. Abhimanyu recognized the
- 0:55formation and undertook to use his training to Pierce it and
- 0:59break the opposing forces power. He succeeded and entered,
- 1:04wreaking havoc on the other side.
- 1:07However, he was then confronted with major warriors highly
- 1:12proficient in the art of warfare, and he was surrounded
- 1:16and trapped. After putting up a valiant
- 1:19fight, he was overcome and succumbed to the overwhelming
- 1:23force ranged against him. His success with due to the
- 1:28advanced training and understanding he had acquired on
- 1:31how to penetrate the formation. His failure was due to the fact
- 1:36that he had no knowledge about how to then extract himself from
- 1:40the situation he found himself in.
- 1:43The story illustrates an essential point for anyone who
- 1:47undertakes to understand and apply the capacities and powers
- 1:51that lie hidden within them. As the following story related
- 1:55by the mother so aptly describes, The development of
- 1:59thought formations may seem like it is far distant from an
- 2:03application of a strategy in warfare, but the lesson is
- 2:08actually similar. The mother notes quote.
- 2:13I don't know if you have ever heard of Madam David Neal who
- 2:16went to Tibet and has written books on Tibet and who was a
- 2:19Buddhist and Buddhists. Buddhists of the strictest
- 2:23tradition do not believe in the divine, do not believe in his
- 2:28eternity, and do not believe in gods who are truly divine.
- 2:34But they know admirably how to use the mental domain, and
- 2:39Buddhist discipline makes you a good master of the mental
- 2:42instrument and mental domain. We used to discuss many things
- 2:48and once she told me, listen, I made an experiment.
- 2:52She had studied a bit of theosophy also.
- 2:55She said I formed a Mahatma with my thought.
- 2:59I formed a Mahatma and she knew. This has been proved that at a
- 3:05given moment mental formations acquire a personal life
- 3:08independent of the fashioner, though they are linked with him,
- 3:13but independent in the sense that they can have their own
- 3:17will. And so she told me.
- 3:20Just imagine, I had made my Mahatma so well that he became a
- 3:24personality independent of me and constantly came to trouble
- 3:29me. He used to come scold me for one
- 3:32thing, give me advice for another, and he wanted to direct
- 3:36my life and I could not succeed in getting rid of him.
- 3:40It was extremely difficult and I didn't know what to do, Mother
- 3:47continues. So I asked her how she had
- 3:50tried. She told me how.
- 3:52She said he troubles me a lot. My Mahatma is very troublesome.
- 3:58He does not leave me in peace. He disturbs my meditations, he
- 4:03hinders me from working. And yet I know quite well that
- 4:07it is I who created him, and I can't get rid of him.
- 4:11Then I said that's because you don't have the trick.
- 4:16Mother laughs and I explained to her what she should do and the
- 4:21next day I used to see her almost every day in those days.
- 4:25You see, the next day she came and told me, ah, I am freed from
- 4:30my Mahatma laughter. She had not cut the connection
- 4:35because that's of no use. One must know how to reabsorb
- 4:391's creation. That is the only way to swallow
- 4:44up again one's formations. End Quote.
