- 0:00Speaker 1: You're listening to an Airwave Media podcast. Hello delicious friends,
- 0:20Speaker 1: and welcome back to part two of Queen Margot Marguerite
- 0:27Speaker 1: develop Queen of Navarre, Queen of France. Yeah, things things
- 0:32Speaker 1: started getting a bit long there, and we are at
- 0:35Speaker 1: the start of a coup against Henry the Third, who,
- 0:39Speaker 1: as we remember, has been an absolute dick. So he's
- 0:42Speaker 1: been a piece of as we know, and so he's
- 0:46Speaker 1: just very aggressive, you know, against the usual arts Protestants, Calvinists,
- 0:51Speaker 1: so on and so forth, and so reasonable Catholics who
- 0:56Speaker 1: are just fucking done with bloodshed and a bunch of
- 1:01Speaker 1: where were now just again, the aforementioned Protestants just don't
- 1:07Speaker 1: want this anymore. And as such, they're trying to put
- 1:10Speaker 1: the younger brother, Francoise on the French throne. They're trying
- 1:15Speaker 1: to usurp him, and so they're working towards this, and
- 1:21Speaker 1: Henry of Navarre and Francoise there they're getting involved in
- 1:28Speaker 1: a coupe. And Margo she's a way bit involved in this,
- 1:37Speaker 1: I say, I say she yeah, because Henry of Navarre
- 1:42Speaker 1: he's involved, and initially she's not into it. She doesn't
- 1:48Speaker 1: want to get involved in this, and she denounces it,
- 1:51Speaker 1: and later she becomes a mediator. She switches aside, so
- 1:58Speaker 1: instead of being on the side of her king, she's
- 2:00Speaker 1: on the side of her husband, and so she is
- 2:05Speaker 1: sort of negotiating between like these you know, more contents,
- 2:09Speaker 1: these moderate Catholics and the Fusionals, and so between Margot
- 2:17Speaker 1: and you know, the rest of her her Muses of Paris,
- 2:20Speaker 1: Henriette of Nivelle's Claude Captain of Clemont, and a bunch
- 2:28Speaker 1: of other people, like they are organizing this the Coudata,
- 2:34Speaker 1: like the Muses, Oh that the music has got in
- 2:36Speaker 1: on it. They're like, well, we are going to do
- 2:37Speaker 1: this will looking fabulous. But by April of fifteen seventy four,
- 2:44Speaker 1: so like a year later, when she's like twenty one,
- 2:47Speaker 1: the conspiracy is exposed and all of its leaders, including
- 2:52Speaker 1: Margo's lover Joseph Bonavarti di La Mole, they're arrested and
- 3:02Speaker 1: Joseph Boniface is decapitated. Yeah, the leaders are arrested in decapitated.
- 3:10Speaker 1: He's basically the fall guy for this. But Francois of
- 3:15Speaker 1: alan Son and Henry of Navarre, like they beg for
- 3:18Speaker 1: forgiveness and they are held as prisoners at the Shettleton
- 3:23Speaker 1: Vincent after this field plot, and so Margot she ends
- 3:27Speaker 1: up writing a letter like to the king pleading on
- 3:32Speaker 1: behalf of her husband, you know, the supporting statement for
- 3:38Speaker 1: Henry of Bourbon, which is like he's the Bourbon, like
- 3:41Speaker 1: he is the reason we get all of the Louies.
- 3:44Speaker 1: And I'll explain that later on a re minute. So
- 3:49Speaker 1: basically she writes this letter on his behalf saying that
- 3:52Speaker 1: he doesn't have anyone to advise him, and she's here
- 3:55Speaker 1: to clear the name of her husband and brother, like
- 3:58Speaker 1: they don't have support, they don't have anybody. I'm here
- 4:00Speaker 1: to stand up for them. Meanwhile, Charles the ninth dies
- 4:08Speaker 1: and Henry becomes Henry the third, So Henry of Anjou
- 4:12Speaker 1: becomes Henry the third, and so when he takes the
- 4:16Speaker 1: throne Franzott of allan Son or he becomes France that
- 4:20Speaker 1: of Andou. I think at this point and Henry of
- 4:23Speaker 1: Navarre are released, but under surveillance, like they're being spied upon,
- 4:30Speaker 1: but they are allowed at court, and despite sort of
- 4:34Speaker 1: giving them a free pass, Henry does not forgive nor
- 4:39Speaker 1: does he forget Margo's supposed betrayal. You know, because he's
- 4:45Speaker 1: an arsehol and he's paranoid that Margot is going to
- 4:49Speaker 1: you know, pot kettle black a situation. So Margot isn't
- 4:53Speaker 1: allowed back at court because he's just consistently pissed off her.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Probably doesn't he that, you know, she's the good looking
- 5:01Speaker 1: child and everyone else is like a monther, you know
- 5:04Speaker 1: what I mean. Like it's so he wants to fuck
- 5:09Speaker 1: things up for Margot even more because he's not happy, right,
- 5:12Speaker 1: He's not happy that she is just out there living
- 5:15Speaker 1: her best life, and so he arranges for Henry of
- 5:22Speaker 1: Navarre to get a mistress who is part of Catherine
- 5:28Speaker 1: de Medici's flying squad. And so over this time, relations
- 5:35Speaker 1: between Margot and her husband, Henry of Navarre they get
- 5:39Speaker 1: shitty because Henry's got all of these mistresses and including
- 5:43Speaker 1: shall dissolve, which is the flank god. And this causes
- 5:47Speaker 1: major fucking issues, especially because so far there are no heirs.
- 5:55Speaker 1: There were no babies either, you know, she's got the
- 5:58Speaker 1: rhythm method down pat or in fertility issues. So even
- 6:07Speaker 1: though like she's outliving her best life, he's out you know,
- 6:13Speaker 1: putting his spoon and everybody's honeypot. Like their marriage is
- 6:19Speaker 1: like a solid political alliance. So even though you know,
- 6:25Speaker 1: like emotionally, relationship wise they're on shaky ground. Henry only
- 6:30Speaker 1: really goes to Margot when it serves his political interests,
- 6:36Speaker 1: and Margot because he's not that interested in her and
- 6:39Speaker 1: he doesn't have jealousy and she doesn't have to deal
- 6:42Speaker 1: with that nonsense. A man comes into her life, the
- 6:47Speaker 1: wonderfully named Boussey Dunblise. That's right, Boussey Bussy. It's then,
- 6:55Speaker 1: whereas Boss that's him, and he is a dandee swordsman.
- 7:01Speaker 1: He is a lover of all genders. I made a
- 7:06Speaker 1: mistake earlier. I just realized Joseph de Bonafasci is a
- 7:10Speaker 1: friend of Francoise. He was a friend. He was not
- 7:13Speaker 1: a lover. Now Boussie danbo was. He is allegedly, allegedly,
- 7:19Speaker 1: allegedly a lover of Enley, the third Enley, previously of Anjou. Yeah, yeah,
- 7:28Speaker 1: don't do this, this is not a game. The whole
- 7:31Speaker 1: family can play. Bussy, don't do that. No, So he
- 7:35Speaker 1: becomes close to Margo because Bussy again a lover of
- 7:39Speaker 1: all genders, bisexual, or as I like to call him, ambisextress.
- 7:47Speaker 1: He is he is, he is. They're having a good time.
- 7:51Speaker 1: They're close, shall we say, probably shagging because she deserves this.
- 7:57Speaker 1: I don't care so Francoise and in Navarre they are
- 8:04Speaker 1: being spied on and they're they're you know, constantly surveyed.
- 8:14Speaker 1: But in fifteen seventy five and fifteen seventy six, respectively,
- 8:23Speaker 1: each of them escape. Now they don't even tell Margo
- 8:27Speaker 1: they're doing this, and so she gets confined to the Louver,
- 8:31Speaker 1: which was a palace at the time and not just
- 8:32Speaker 1: like an art gallery. So she is, you know, held
- 8:36Speaker 1: in the louver because she's suspected of being an accomplice,
- 8:40Speaker 1: even though she hadn't a notion, right, She's completely fucked
- 8:43Speaker 1: over by her husband and her brother because they decide
- 8:46Speaker 1: to just buger off and leave all there. But it's
- 8:52Speaker 1: not all, you know, rain drops in sadness because Margot
- 8:58Speaker 1: I'm being confined, being held prisoner in the louver. Not
- 9:03Speaker 1: exactly the worst time for her, because she has a
- 9:07Speaker 1: good time. She starts reading books and I can appreciate
- 9:13Speaker 1: that she has time alone and gets to read books,
- 9:17Speaker 1: like that's just a good time had by all in it.
- 9:20Speaker 1: So like I love that she had some me time,
- 9:26Speaker 1: which at this point she fucking deserved. Now, her book
- 9:30Speaker 1: reading does get interrupted after, you know, a couple of
- 9:34Speaker 1: years because Francois, her younger brother, allies with the Huge
- 9:38Speaker 1: Nots and he demands that Margo is released, and she
- 9:42Speaker 1: is kind of because she is let out a wee
- 9:48Speaker 1: bet to assist Catherine de Medici in peace talks leading
- 9:53Speaker 1: to the edict of Billieux for the Huge Nots. And
- 10:01Speaker 1: Henry of Navarre he is Protestant again, he reconverted and
- 10:07Speaker 1: he's looking for Margot to rejoin him in Navarre. Now,
- 10:12Speaker 1: unfortunately this doesn't quite happen because Henry the Third and
- 10:18Speaker 1: Katherine de Medice they're worried that, you know, she might
- 10:22Speaker 1: become a hostage of Henry of Navarre and this might
- 10:27Speaker 1: strengthen the alliance between in May of Navarre and Francoise,
- 10:31Speaker 1: and they try and use Margot as bait to sort
- 10:34Speaker 1: of lure and of Navarre to Paris and get him
- 10:38Speaker 1: to change his religion again. But this doesn't doesn't quite work,
- 10:43Speaker 1: and a couple of years later, Margot requests permission to
- 10:48Speaker 1: go on admission to the Netherlands on behalf of her
- 10:52Speaker 1: brother Francoise because they're hoping to like make Francois less
- 10:58Speaker 1: of a problem by making him like ruler of the Netherlands,
- 11:02Speaker 1: because the Flemings have been rebelling in Spanish rule and
- 11:06Speaker 1: they thought it might be better to offer the throne
- 11:09Speaker 1: to like a more tolerant foreign prince and you know,
- 11:14Speaker 1: also get military support and diplomatic support, like all this shit.
- 11:18Speaker 1: And Henry the third he's like, yes, Margot, go off,
- 11:23Speaker 1: and you know, get rid of the inconvenience of Francoise,
- 11:27Speaker 1: like he's annoying. Deal him and so under under the
- 11:34Speaker 1: pretext of going to Spa a spav is it in Spa,
- 11:41Speaker 1: Margo leaves powers with her court and for two months
- 11:47Speaker 1: travels around the Netherlands. She goes to receptions and tries
- 11:51Speaker 1: to persuade sort of anti Spanish nobility to join her
- 11:55Speaker 1: brother Francoise, and she meets the governor of the Netherlands,
- 11:59Speaker 1: Don Juan of Austria, and like, like she is so
- 12:05Speaker 1: into this mission, like the majority of her memoirs, like
- 12:09Speaker 1: two quarters of it like are specifically, like specifically about
- 12:16Speaker 1: this mission. And she spends two months just trying to
- 12:19Speaker 1: like wheel and deal and negotiate, and it's really fucking
- 12:23Speaker 1: dangerous for her because she could have been captured by
- 12:26Speaker 1: the Spanish. She could been captured by anybody and used
- 12:29Speaker 1: as you know, leverage because she's the king sister. You know,
- 12:36Speaker 1: that's still you know a big deal. But she it
- 12:45Speaker 1: is also like in danger if she returns to France.
- 12:47Speaker 1: She's in danger if she's in the Netherlands. Like, nothing
- 12:49Speaker 1: is really easy for her during this time when she
- 12:56Speaker 1: does like try and get things going, like she arranges
- 13:05Speaker 1: what she can and she builds up alliances where she can.
- 13:07Speaker 1: But unfortunately, Francois just could not defeat the Spanish army
- 13:12Speaker 1: and as such all of it was for not really
- 13:15Speaker 1: But when she you know, returns to court, and there
- 13:22Speaker 1: are major fucking issues between Henry the Third and Francois,
- 13:26Speaker 1: Like their supporters are just at each other's throats and
- 13:30Speaker 1: it is constant, you know, and it doesn't help that
- 13:37Speaker 1: Henry is absolutely paranoid. Henry the third just has major
- 13:44Speaker 1: trust issues. But again, his mother is Katherin de Medici,
- 13:47Speaker 1: so I'm not fucking surprised, and guests to the point
- 13:50Speaker 1: where Francoise asks to be absent from court to be
- 13:54Speaker 1: allowed to, you know, go away and do some shit,
- 13:57Speaker 1: and naturally, Henry the third incredibly suspicious and so he
- 14:02Speaker 1: assumes there's going to be a conspiracy going on. It's
- 14:06Speaker 1: led by Francoise, and so he has him arrested and
- 14:11Speaker 1: he's imprisoned with Margo. So it's just like just starts
- 14:19Speaker 1: arresting a fuck town of people. Even bousy dumb was
- 14:23Speaker 1: is taken to the best deal and a couple of
- 14:26Speaker 1: days later, Francois actually escapes again, but this time Margot
- 14:33Speaker 1: is involved because she throws a rope down from her
- 14:37Speaker 1: window sneaky, sneaky, and Francois escapes. But then she's like,
- 14:43Speaker 1: I wasn't involved in this, and everyone believes her, like, oh,
- 14:48Speaker 1: you know that rope that's hanging from your window. Yep,
- 14:51Speaker 1: it's made from your sheets, is it? That's an interesting situation,
- 14:58Speaker 1: you know, do you were you involved in this? I mean,
- 15:00Speaker 1: I wasn't involved in anyway. Have you seen thoseknots that's
- 15:02Speaker 1: clearly tied by a sailor. I don't know how to
- 15:04Speaker 1: sail I'm a woman, you know what I mean. It's like, no, like,
- 15:11Speaker 1: was not me? No, yeah, not at all? But yeah,
- 15:16Speaker 1: they just kind of go cool, and so she gets
- 15:20Speaker 1: permission to go see her husband in Navarre. And at
- 15:28Speaker 1: this point there still isn't a valois Air. There wasn't
- 15:32Speaker 1: an heir to the throne, because like Elizabeth made into Spain,
- 15:39Speaker 1: you know, there was just these other households, but there
- 15:42Speaker 1: isn't a valois Air, and so they're trying to get
- 15:45Speaker 1: marriages going on, and they're hoping, they're hoping that, you know,
- 15:51Speaker 1: they'll be sort of offspring between Navarre and Margot and
- 15:58Speaker 1: if that doesn't happen, maybe some someone else. Not only
- 16:03Speaker 1: are they open, you know, for baby Vala, but they're
- 16:05Speaker 1: also hoping that there is issues going on in sort
- 16:10Speaker 1: of the southern regions and maybe maybe that Margo being
- 16:16Speaker 1: there can sort of settle it down a wee bit.
- 16:21Speaker 1: And so she returns to her husband, accompanied by Katherin
- 16:25Speaker 1: de Medici and Chancellor Gey DEFLORDI Buback. And this journey
- 16:31Speaker 1: was supposed to like solidify sort of French royal power
- 16:39Speaker 1: and sort of strength and just strength and ties like
- 16:42Speaker 1: all along the way and trying to reduce conflict like
- 16:48Speaker 1: through the regions. So Henri of Navarre and Margo they
- 16:52Speaker 1: were they were sort of staying in different areas, and
- 16:54Speaker 1: they were staying in Bao, but they weren't super fond
- 16:58Speaker 1: of Catholics and so not great from ourgo and they
- 17:02Speaker 1: ended up moving to Narak, which is part of the
- 17:05Speaker 1: kind of of France, and it's a bit more tolerant,
- 17:11Speaker 1: so you could kind of worship, you know, whichever way
- 17:15Speaker 1: you know, whichever way you want to appreciate God, go
- 17:17Speaker 1: do that. That's fine. And it's here where she starts
- 17:21Speaker 1: working to establish this more refined court, forms a literary
- 17:27Speaker 1: academy with figures like a group of Dubina so lute,
- 17:31Speaker 1: Baldaz and Mondagne. I have pronounced those names all real blay,
- 17:36Speaker 1: I'm so sorry. And you have all of these like
- 17:40Speaker 1: writers and artists and poets, and they have created this
- 17:46Speaker 1: like the salon, these courts. It's just buzzing with you know,
- 17:52Speaker 1: great thoughts and of course super sexy fun times like
- 17:58Speaker 1: the Court of Noak is oh, like infamous for amorous
- 18:05Speaker 1: adventures that actually inspires Shakespeare's Loves Labors Lost. And during
- 18:16Speaker 1: this time, like everybody's just they're just boinking everybody else,
- 18:22Speaker 1: you know, smut, salaciousness, shagging everywhere, and you know, Henry
- 18:27Speaker 1: of Navarre is just going after all the maids of honor,
- 18:33Speaker 1: so all of her ladies in waiting. He's trying to
- 18:36Speaker 1: like knock him all through, Like what, like, it's not
- 18:41Speaker 1: tenpin bowling. You don't have to knock all the pins down, mate,
- 18:43Speaker 1: It's it's not what you're supposed to be doing. And
- 18:46Speaker 1: also weird that this is your specific aim, like, hey,
- 18:50Speaker 1: I want to fuck all the people that are close
- 18:52Speaker 1: to my wife, but not my wife. Cool. What No,
- 18:58Speaker 1: that's weird. I don't know who you are, but that's
- 19:00Speaker 1: fucking weird. So he's trying to shag women with pulses
- 19:07Speaker 1: and Margot she has an affair with Vcomduterin and they
- 19:16Speaker 1: have this sort of like deep connection and she writes
- 19:21Speaker 1: about it and her memoirs and it's it's like she's
- 19:25Speaker 1: just giving herself to it and you have to appreciate that, like, Margo,
- 19:29Speaker 1: live your best life. But yeah, fifteen seventy nine, shit
- 19:37Speaker 1: breaks down because the huge nos in Kinghund the third,
- 19:41Speaker 1: there's war, the lover's war breaks out and it is
- 19:45Speaker 1: just shit. And so Margot she said to the husband
- 19:52Speaker 1: during the conflict, which only lasts a year, and she suggests,
- 19:59Speaker 1: you know, getting Francis involved in negotiations, which what do
- 20:04Speaker 1: you know, fucking works manages to like save the day.
- 20:10Speaker 1: There's peace because Francois is one of the not shitty ones. Unfortunately,
- 20:16Speaker 1: when all of this political shit is going really well
- 20:19Speaker 1: for Margot, her marriage to Henry is absolutely crumbling, and
- 20:26Speaker 1: she falls in love with her brother's grand equerry, Jacques
- 20:35Speaker 1: de Alais, Lord of Champalon, and her letters to him,
- 20:40Speaker 1: they're just they're one of those deep emotional like just
- 20:48Speaker 1: for falling love. She's talking about fusion of souls like
- 20:51Speaker 1: they are connected. It's fucking beautiful and that's what she's
- 20:58Speaker 1: looking for. And but again he's, you know, the top
- 21:06Speaker 1: dude for her brother, So when he fucks off, Champalon
- 21:11Speaker 1: goes with them. Margo's situation just gets from bad to
- 21:18Speaker 1: worse because again she is without child, her husband is
- 21:27Speaker 1: not interested in her, and the person she does care
- 21:31Speaker 1: for is gone, and her husband is quote unquote having
- 21:35Speaker 1: a relationship. No he's not. He's an abusive power because
- 21:43Speaker 1: he is shagging La Belle Fusus, one of her ladies
- 21:49Speaker 1: in waiting, who is fourteen years old, like fuck, like
- 21:59Speaker 1: they keep referring to it as a passionate affair, like no,
- 22:04Speaker 1: that's that's abus man, it's fucking abuse Jesus Christ. So
- 22:09Speaker 1: they they're shagging, and lebelfa Sous becomes pregnant, and now
- 22:16Speaker 1: we know the problem is definitely with Margot and not
- 22:18Speaker 1: with you know himself. And so Margo suggests banishing lebel
- 22:25Speaker 1: Fossus and she just, like this fourteen year old I
- 22:30Speaker 1: appreciate greatly because she just bites back and goes, no,
- 22:33Speaker 1: you're not fucking banishing me. If you banish me, like
- 22:36Speaker 1: shit's gonna go down. I'm pregnant with the King's child,
- 22:39Speaker 1: like what you at? And so she is like pushing
- 22:49Speaker 1: in Lee to fight with Margot, like she's causing all
- 22:52Speaker 1: this extra tension in their marriage and she's causing all
- 22:55Speaker 1: the shit, and she is trying to sort of convince
- 23:01Speaker 1: Henri to marry her and get rid of like Margot,
- 23:05Speaker 1: who again, as far as we can tell, esterile, you know,
- 23:09Speaker 1: and like this seems to be like her physical issue.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Really she got the beauty bit. Maybe she's pcos or
- 23:17Speaker 1: something like we're not sure why, but she's just infertile.
- 23:23Speaker 1: And Margot and Henri they just stop communicating, their sleeping
- 23:30Speaker 1: in separate beds. They're in the same chamber, but they're
- 23:32Speaker 1: like separate beds. They're just not like together. It's like, really,
- 23:38Speaker 1: you know that really awkward silent treatment, Like I guess
- 23:41Speaker 1: it's probably like that. I have a feeling it's just
- 23:45Speaker 1: cold as fucking eyes. Now, Leabelle fo Sous gives birth
- 23:54Speaker 1: to a stillborn daughter and Margot, I mean, this is
- 23:58Speaker 1: absolutely fucking jogging about just it's very, very cold. Is
- 24:04Speaker 1: that Margo says it pleased God for this to happen,
- 24:08Speaker 1: Like again, what the actual fuck, Margot? That is an
- 24:14Speaker 1: awful statement. Like I understand the whole religious childhood of
- 24:18Speaker 1: wedlock scenario, but this is extreme because you know, you
- 24:23Speaker 1: are also shagging people outside marriage, like okay, okay. So
- 24:32Speaker 1: a few years later, fifteen to eighty two, Margot returns
- 24:35Speaker 1: to Paris and it's unsure why she's left. It could
- 24:42Speaker 1: because you know, all of this stuff's been going on
- 24:44Speaker 1: for a few years, but she doesn't have an air,
- 24:47Speaker 1: that's nothing going on, and she's just just noping out
- 24:50Speaker 1: of there. And so she goes here as well because
- 24:57Speaker 1: Katherin de Medici and Henry are like come back to
- 25:00Speaker 1: French court and yeah, yeah, they're hoping Navar is going
- 25:07Speaker 1: to come and they can you know, weasel the way
- 25:10Speaker 1: through and sort it out. Unfortunately, he doesn't come, and
- 25:15Speaker 1: her relationship with him just doesn't get any better because
- 25:20Speaker 1: there's sort of jokes going around about you know, his
- 25:23Speaker 1: morals and his relationships and his failures, and she kind
- 25:28Speaker 1: of stokes that fireye bit, because she's pissed at him,
- 25:32Speaker 1: as she should be, because fuck him, he's a prick.
- 25:39Speaker 1: So well, she's gone over here, right Leabelle Fossus is
- 25:44Speaker 1: still her lady in waiting, so she's like seventeen at
- 25:47Speaker 1: this point, and it's at this point she fires her,
- 25:52Speaker 1: like not the years before, like now she gets rid
- 25:55Speaker 1: of her. And this like pisses everybody off, Like Emile
- 26:04Speaker 1: of Navarre is just enraged thatsus has been gotten rid of,
- 26:10Speaker 1: like he's livid, and Margot spends her time was Chamfalon,
- 26:17Speaker 1: who is again her brother's grand equerry and they are
- 26:22Speaker 1: hitting it off again. That being said, rumors start spreading
- 26:29Speaker 1: because you know, she's taken the piss at the end
- 26:31Speaker 1: of the third and his advisors and you know all
- 26:34Speaker 1: the shit he did, and so they start, well the
- 26:40Speaker 1: rumor Metle starts printing pamphlets to tarnish our reputation. And
- 26:45Speaker 1: so these rumors start spreading about Margaret being pregnant, and
- 26:51Speaker 1: it's like, she's sick, so she's not well, like you,
- 26:55Speaker 1: no offense, but you know, medieval France, I would be
- 26:59Speaker 1: surprised if somebody didn't get a vomiting bug at least once, right, somebody,
- 27:04Speaker 1: you know, you didn't know how to wash your hands,
- 27:07Speaker 1: lads like what we're talking about. So, yeah, she's sick,
- 27:11Speaker 1: and so what happens, Oh women sick, are you pregnant?
- 27:15Speaker 1: Fucking not. I'm just sick, dickhead, get over it. But
- 27:21Speaker 1: rumors of Marco's pregnancy, you know, start spending on court,
- 27:26Speaker 1: and it gives Enry the third the perfect excuse to
- 27:29Speaker 1: get rid of her because of scandal scandal, and some
- 27:34Speaker 1: of her ladies in waiting, like members of her court,
- 27:38Speaker 1: are arrested and questioned. So they're like asking if she's pregnant,
- 27:42Speaker 1: if she's ever given birth, you know, all this kind
- 27:44Speaker 1: of nonsense, and you know, all of them are like, no,
- 27:49Speaker 1: absolutely not, and so like they're tortured and shit like,
- 27:53Speaker 1: and they do this just to find out or trying
- 27:57Speaker 1: to force an answer. But none of them are given,
- 28:00Speaker 1: but she gets expelled from court anyway, and she ends
- 28:04Speaker 1: up in this really weird situation because she ends up
- 28:06Speaker 1: in limbo because in Lee King of Navarre like refuses
- 28:12Speaker 1: to receive her. He's he is quote unquote awaiting negotiations
- 28:19Speaker 1: and this this does not go down well with like
- 28:22Speaker 1: the huge no like warloads because they sort of spark
- 28:28Speaker 1: these conflicts because they're like, what the fuck are you doing? Man?
- 28:35Speaker 1: And so she ends up waiting to see if she
- 28:38Speaker 1: can go to Navar because she's kicked out of Henry
- 28:40Speaker 1: the Third's court. And after a while, like she's allowed
- 28:46Speaker 1: to return to Navar. I mean, she does return. It's
- 28:49Speaker 1: not the warmest of receptions, and a couple months later,
- 28:56Speaker 1: like things just again they get bad to worse for
- 28:58Speaker 1: her from her youngest brother dies, so she loses like
- 29:06Speaker 1: her best ally and it also bits more pressure on
- 29:10Speaker 1: her relationship with Nri of Navarre because they are now
- 29:13Speaker 1: expected to produce an air because there are none. There
- 29:18Speaker 1: are no val Wat airs now again, there's no Vala air.
- 29:23Speaker 1: And somehow I don't know how this line of essential
- 29:28Speaker 1: worked because I don't feel like he's the closest living
- 29:31Speaker 1: blood relative like I don't. But because of his marriage
- 29:37Speaker 1: to Margot, Henri of Navarre becomes next in line to
- 29:41Speaker 1: the French throne. And when Henri takes a new lover,
- 29:48Speaker 1: La Belle Corrassande, because everyone has a fucking nickname. I
- 29:52Speaker 1: don't know why, but they do, so let's just accept it.
- 29:56Speaker 1: So corraissand she is sort of pushing and read to
- 30:01Speaker 1: you know, divorce or get rid of Margo so that
- 30:05Speaker 1: she can marry him and they can have you know, babies,
- 30:11Speaker 1: And that very year Margo is well, she decides to
- 30:16Speaker 1: just abandon her husband because fuck that. She rallies the
- 30:21Speaker 1: Catholic League and works with them. They're basically this group
- 30:26Speaker 1: of Catholics like all across Europe, and she unites with
- 30:30Speaker 1: them and she orchestrates a coup de'ta and she sees
- 30:34Speaker 1: his power over Agen and fortifies the city. But after
- 30:39Speaker 1: a while that city is done with her. I don't
- 30:42Speaker 1: know what's going on, but they are sick of her shit.
- 30:44Speaker 1: I guess, I don't know. They're they're just not happy
- 30:48Speaker 1: with her. And she has to deal with the revote
- 30:52Speaker 1: and has to flee, and Kavin Imdici is trying to
- 30:57Speaker 1: get her to go to a royal manor and Margot Wing.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Margot straight up refuses and instead goes to the fortress
- 31:06Speaker 1: of Calais with Jean de Laard de Gallad and appoints
- 31:11Speaker 1: him captain of her guards. And she stays there for
- 31:19Speaker 1: a little while and then ends up taking refuge in
- 31:22Speaker 1: the Castle of Ibrais, which is then besieged by World Trips,
- 31:27Speaker 1: leading to her imprisonment in the Castle of Usson in
- 31:30Speaker 1: October of fifteen eighty six. So she's basically gone from
- 31:34Speaker 1: like castle to castle, just fucking around and finding out,
- 31:40Speaker 1: like that's basically and Jean de Lard de Gallad, her
- 31:49Speaker 1: alleged lover after the World Trips, just basically storm and
- 31:53Speaker 1: deal with them. He is executed right in front of her,
- 31:59Speaker 1: because of course they do that. Of course they do.
- 32:01Speaker 1: And because she, you know, has witnessed her lover, you know,
- 32:05Speaker 1: murdered in front of her, she believes she's next, and
- 32:08Speaker 1: so she writes a letter to her mother, and this
- 32:11Speaker 1: is so fucking morbid, But she writes a letter to
- 32:15Speaker 1: Katherin de Medici and says to her that she wants
- 32:19Speaker 1: like a post mortem, because like you don'tusually do that.
- 32:21Speaker 1: She's like cut me open and you will see that
- 32:24Speaker 1: I'm not pregnant. Because again more rumors are flying that
- 32:29Speaker 1: she's pregnant and you know she isn't, and so she wants,
- 32:35Speaker 1: you know, proof, and she's like, if you kill me,
- 32:39Speaker 1: can you please make sure that you put these rumors
- 32:42Speaker 1: to rest, Like I'm I'm good, I didn't do this,
- 32:46Speaker 1: you know. But things start, you know, turning up Millhouse
- 32:52Speaker 1: because her jailer, marquis the kind of lac he switches sides.
- 33:00Speaker 1: So he was originally on the side of hen with
- 33:02Speaker 1: a third and then he moves to Margo side. But
- 33:06Speaker 1: why did he switch sides? Was he influenced by a
- 33:09Speaker 1: bribe or her vagina? We'll never know, but anyway he
- 33:16Speaker 1: he releases her, but in a weird plot twist, she
- 33:21Speaker 1: doesn't go anywhere. She's like, I'm going to stay in
- 33:24Speaker 1: my castle and read, you know, get myself a face mask,
- 33:30Speaker 1: drink some wine. Sometimes you just have to treat yourself,
- 33:35Speaker 1: you know. She chooses to stay in the castle of
- 33:41Speaker 1: Unson for eighteen years, and it's when she's there she
- 33:48Speaker 1: learns that her family dies and her husband is now
- 33:51Speaker 1: you know, the King of France. And when she's there,
- 33:56Speaker 1: she establishes this court again her in her courts or salons,
- 34:02Speaker 1: there's intellectuals, musicians, writers, poets. She restores the castle and
- 34:09Speaker 1: of course her financial position. So yeah, when when she's there,
- 34:19Speaker 1: like she reads information about herself, stories are told, and
- 34:23Speaker 1: that's when she's again pissed off and decides that no
- 34:27Speaker 1: one's going to tell her a story but her. And
- 34:29Speaker 1: that's when she starts writing her memoirs. Now they aren't
- 34:32Speaker 1: published until after she dies, but still it's pretty cool.
- 34:39Speaker 1: So what's interesting about her memoirs. It's like her autobiography.
- 34:47Speaker 1: She may very well be I'm not entirely sure, but
- 34:49Speaker 1: I think she might be the first woman, you know,
- 34:53Speaker 1: to write a memoir about her life like properly. And
- 34:59Speaker 1: maybe am I am I wrong? Am I might be wrong?
- 35:02Speaker 1: Let me know if I'm wrong. And if I am,
- 35:05Speaker 1: who was the first person, first woman to write her
- 35:08Speaker 1: own memoirs? Because I would I need to know this
- 35:10Speaker 1: information because I'm going to think it's this. Now loads
- 35:16Speaker 1: of writers are visiting her in you know, her salon's
- 35:19Speaker 1: her court bandome if Joseph Scaligi, like, there's loads, there's
- 35:25Speaker 1: loads of them. And over this time, Henry is the
- 35:33Speaker 1: King of France and he you know, still doesn't have
- 35:36Speaker 1: an air, and he's still married to Margo, who is
- 35:39Speaker 1: effectively the Queen of France at this point, and effectively
- 35:43Speaker 1: she is the Queen of France. And so in fifteen
- 35:46Speaker 1: ninety three he proposes an annulment of their marriage because
- 35:53Speaker 1: he needs to get power because he's King of France,
- 35:57Speaker 1: and he needs to marry again because he needs a
- 35:58Speaker 1: fucking heir because his it's not great to be on
- 36:05Speaker 1: the throne and not have an air. Oh my god,
- 36:07Speaker 1: I actually forgot, Like the reason he is king is
- 36:09Speaker 1: because Henry the third was assassinated, because not only was
- 36:13Speaker 1: he assassinated, he was assassinated by a fanatical monk, Like
- 36:18Speaker 1: of course he was like, that is wild, but yet
- 36:21Speaker 1: there we go. So Engley the fourth and May of Navarre,
- 36:27Speaker 1: he is trying to like another marriage, and Margo agrees
- 36:35Speaker 1: to like be involved in this and to arrange the renumbment,
- 36:40Speaker 1: but only if she gets to choose who he marries,
- 36:45Speaker 1: like she needs, like phil veto power. And also he
- 36:50Speaker 1: ensures that she is financially stable, like she wants money
- 36:54Speaker 1: just you know, fair enough. So the negotiations begin and
- 37:00Speaker 1: they go, you know forward with it, and they're like infertility,
- 37:06Speaker 1: we can't have children. The marriage isn't you know, really
- 37:12Speaker 1: legal technically because Protestant Catholic. They're like going through all
- 37:15Speaker 1: of it, and then they are like citing like the
- 37:19Speaker 1: rumors and before been like this was a forced marriage,
- 37:22Speaker 1: we didn't want to do it, like they were just
- 37:23Speaker 1: hitting every fucking mark like boom boom, boom, boom boom.
- 37:27Speaker 1: And during during all this, like Margot just starts and
- 37:35Speaker 1: things are going great for her. She's getting more money,
- 37:37Speaker 1: things are going well up until the point Henry's like,
- 37:40Speaker 1: I want to marry Gabrielle Ditri, who was his mistress,
- 37:46Speaker 1: and Margot is having fucking none of that. She's like nope. Effectively,
- 37:51Speaker 1: she calls her a whore and says she can't allow
- 37:54Speaker 1: him to marry his mistress. And so the renowment is
- 37:58Speaker 1: kind of like put on hold at this point because
- 38:01Speaker 1: she's like, I'm not gonna let this marriage dissolve just
- 38:04Speaker 1: for you to marry her, Like I'm not doing that.
- 38:07Speaker 1: But as luck would have it for Henri, Gabrielle dies.
- 38:12Speaker 1: Everybody dies, and this it's just very sad, and so
- 38:16Speaker 1: Margot she gets back to like getting the annoyment on
- 38:20Speaker 1: the roll and she gets financial compensation. She's like, give
- 38:25Speaker 1: me money, and I still want to be called like
- 38:29Speaker 1: Queen of Navarre, Queen of France, you know, of Voa,
- 38:33Speaker 1: Like I want my titles and I want my money,
- 38:37Speaker 1: and he's like sold, And so they bring it towards
- 38:41Speaker 1: the Pope Clement the eighth, and so he puts out
- 38:49Speaker 1: a paper bill there's an annulment on it for October
- 38:52Speaker 1: twenty fourth, fifteen ninety nine, and the Archbishop of a
- 38:56Speaker 1: Nulls formally finalizes the annoyment in December of that year.
- 39:02Speaker 1: And the very next year Henry remarries, and he marries
- 39:07Speaker 1: a cousin, like a distant cousin of Margot, and she
- 39:14Speaker 1: is Marie de Medici, and things actually work out better.
- 39:20Speaker 1: You know, when you split with somebody and you're actually
- 39:22Speaker 1: better off, sort of not in a relationship but maybe
- 39:27Speaker 1: not even friends, but like acquaintances, like you're much better,
- 39:31Speaker 1: like better off, And that's kind of what happens here.
- 39:35Speaker 1: So Margot and Henry just become like a bit more chill,
- 39:40Speaker 1: like they get on much better after this, and she
- 39:45Speaker 1: enters the good graces of the kind of Frans after
- 39:50Speaker 1: fucking twenty years in exile, like she is just finally
- 39:56Speaker 1: doing well for herself. And it's during this time that
- 40:03Speaker 1: there's a conspiracy going on with the Count of Alven,
- 40:08Speaker 1: who's like a nephew ish of Inley, and this is
- 40:13Speaker 1: conspiracy going on because he is trying to like usurp Throwne.
- 40:21Speaker 1: But the funny thing is as well is his mum's
- 40:23Speaker 1: also like Navarre's mistress, so like, it's just fucking weird.
- 40:27Speaker 1: So yeah, and Margot discovers this conspiracy. She uncovers it,
- 40:35Speaker 1: and this leads to her sort of reclaiming sort of
- 40:38Speaker 1: money from the Court of Verne because she's like, oh no,
- 40:42Speaker 1: they owe me this because of ABC, And so the
- 40:44Speaker 1: king allows her to come to court and come to
- 40:47Speaker 1: Paris to manage your case. And so in sixteen oh five,
- 40:51Speaker 1: after being an ooss on forever, she returns to Paris
- 40:55Speaker 1: and she manages to impress everybody there, even though to
- 40:59Speaker 1: them she is an absolute fucking weirdo. You know when
- 41:02Speaker 1: women get to a certain age where they no longer
- 41:04Speaker 1: give a fuck about other people, Like that's the age
- 41:07Speaker 1: she's at now, because she's kind of dressed weird and
- 41:10Speaker 1: she's eccentric, but she's just like a cool, old older lady,
- 41:15Speaker 1: like that's where we're at now. And so she comes
- 41:21Speaker 1: there and she's just a benefactor of the poor, and
- 41:26Speaker 1: she's like just a mentor of the arts, and she
- 41:30Speaker 1: has become like extra devout in this time away. So
- 41:33Speaker 1: she's just the epitome of what like a French noble
- 41:38Speaker 1: should be at this time. And she's like like acquaintances
- 41:46Speaker 1: with Vincent de Paul of you know, Saint Vincent de
- 41:50Speaker 1: Paul fame, like here is are traveling like they are
- 41:53Speaker 1: close because again she's like that way bit extra religious
- 41:57Speaker 1: in life, like in later life. And she wins the
- 42:03Speaker 1: sort of the lawsuit against Auvergne like the following year,
- 42:09Speaker 1: and she gets like a bunch of inheritance from her
- 42:15Speaker 1: mother's side of the family because he had it because
- 42:18Speaker 1: he was a dude or whatever. But she gets it.
- 42:20Speaker 1: And yeah, and when she gets all of this money
- 42:25Speaker 1: and titles and everything else that goes with it, she
- 42:28Speaker 1: names the Dofain Louis as her heir, which is a
- 42:33Speaker 1: big fucking deal because this is like the Louis, all
- 42:37Speaker 1: of the Louis of France, Like this is the house
- 42:38Speaker 1: of Bourbon. This is where it starts, because Bourbon of Navarre,
- 42:44Speaker 1: and so this sort of solidifies her as being this awesome,
- 42:50Speaker 1: amazing person and puts her in a very good sort
- 42:55Speaker 1: of political situation, a very prominent position. And this yes
- 43:00Speaker 1: also solidifies the transition from the Valois family to the
- 43:05Speaker 1: Bourbon dynasty. And this also strengthens Margo's relationship in friendship
- 43:11Speaker 1: with Queen Marie de Medici, like things are things are
- 43:17Speaker 1: going well because like her naming Louis as her heir,
- 43:24Speaker 1: the Dauphin as her heir, it just shows that this
- 43:29Speaker 1: sort of weird family situation has the backing of the
- 43:32Speaker 1: Queen of France, because again she got to retain her titles.
- 43:38Speaker 1: So she is active in court events, and she like
- 43:43Speaker 1: is very close to Henri and Marie's children, like she
- 43:48Speaker 1: is the godmother of Prince Gaston, Yes Gaston, and her
- 43:56Speaker 1: household is basically in the left bank of the Seine,
- 44:00Speaker 1: and she establishes Lostelle de la Rene Maried and it's
- 44:06Speaker 1: sort of this is it's her saloons. It's this amazing
- 44:12Speaker 1: intellectual and political center in Paris. And in sixteen ten
- 44:20Speaker 1: Marie gets coronated at Saan Denis. And what is absolutely
- 44:25Speaker 1: wild is the day after the coronation, Henri is assassinated.
- 44:30Speaker 1: So when Marie is named Queen of France in Margot's
- 44:34Speaker 1: own attendance, the very next day Henry is killed. Yeah,
- 44:41Speaker 1: Francois le Riec and Marie de Medici. So she's obviously
- 44:48Speaker 1: like the regent at this point because she is the
- 44:53Speaker 1: mother of the Daufin who's going to be the it
- 44:56Speaker 1: is at this point the next king of France. He
- 44:58Speaker 1: is the regnant and she's regent. She is ruling in
- 45:01Speaker 1: a stead. But she keeps Margo on as a political
- 45:06Speaker 1: advisor because she is i mean, she knows what she's
- 45:11Speaker 1: doing and she's there to support them, and her and
- 45:14Speaker 1: Marie are just very close over the years, and it
- 45:18Speaker 1: just shows you that sort of bygones to be bygones,
- 45:21Speaker 1: because she has nothing against Marie, Like she could probably
- 45:24Speaker 1: get rid of her if she really wanted to, but
- 45:27Speaker 1: like they're fairly close, and it gets to the point
- 45:30Speaker 1: where she's just i mean, she's close to their kids,
- 45:34Speaker 1: and she's involved in like diplomatic roles and being just
- 45:38Speaker 1: petty enough. Right, The Jesuits put this text out and
- 45:47Speaker 1: they have this massive misogynistic bullshit text in which Margot
- 45:55Speaker 1: responds to them the woman question learned in suttle discourse,
- 46:01Speaker 1: in which she argues for the superiority of women over
- 46:05Speaker 1: men as opposed to being the other way around. And
- 46:08Speaker 1: I'm just like, absolutely Margo tell them to go fuck himself.
- 46:12Speaker 1: But she does that. She also like negotiates the Estate
- 46:17Speaker 1: General of sixteen fourteen, and she does that with like
- 46:20Speaker 1: the clergy, so she's sort of negotiating on behalf of
- 46:24Speaker 1: like the church and the crown. She's just fucking amazing.
- 46:29Speaker 1: But the following year, in sixteen fifteen, she gets really
- 46:32Speaker 1: fucking sick. She's so ill. Now I have looked and
- 46:39Speaker 1: looked and looked, but I cannot, for the life of me,
- 46:42Speaker 1: find what exactly she died of. Just like she got sick,
- 46:46Speaker 1: very sharply, very quickly, and within a month she passes away.
- 46:53Speaker 1: On the twenty seventh of March sixteen fifteen, at the
- 46:57Speaker 1: Hostelle de la Rene Mariede and Pari, Marguerite de Bellois,
- 47:04Speaker 1: Queen of Navarre, Queen of France, passes away and she
- 47:12Speaker 1: is buried in the Finery Chapel de Velois and the
- 47:15Speaker 1: Basilica of San deny, but at some point, like her
- 47:21Speaker 1: casket disappeared and we have no idea what happened to
- 47:24Speaker 1: her remains, like we don't know where she is now.
- 47:27Speaker 1: She could be anywhere, And what is so strange is
- 47:32Speaker 1: like over the years, like there's a whole myth. There's
- 47:34Speaker 1: like a movie Rene Margo, Queen Margot and Alexander Duma,
- 47:40Speaker 1: who basically writes fan fiction about Royalty, like he does
- 47:45Speaker 1: it all the time, like the man, I'm not gonna
- 47:48Speaker 1: say he's the Philippa Gregory of his time. But also
- 47:53Speaker 1: like they were all of these sort of La city
- 47:58Speaker 1: libel going around like throughout her lifetime, and then it
- 48:02Speaker 1: built on that that she was an inform maniac, like
- 48:04Speaker 1: there was at one point rumors that like she had
- 48:08Speaker 1: an incestuous relationship with Henri, the third Unrie of Angel,
- 48:14Speaker 1: which is why he was so like jealous, Like there's
- 48:17Speaker 1: all this kind of weird, creepy like rumors going around
- 48:20Speaker 1: and that she was just a big, massive slut when
- 48:23Speaker 1: really she was banging people just about as much as
- 48:26Speaker 1: anybody else is banging anybody, Like yeah, what's okay for
- 48:31Speaker 1: men to do but not women? Oh, I don't know,
- 48:33Speaker 1: have sex apparently. Yeah weird, but yeah, misogynists throughout history
- 48:41Speaker 1: will work really really hard to just fuck things up.
- 48:49Speaker 1: They can't help themselves, like they would rather show a
- 48:54Speaker 1: woman in this sort of slut light than as in
- 49:01Speaker 1: fully fledged human being. But yeah, that's that's just how
- 49:07Speaker 1: it is. And I am absolutely sick of this bullshit.
- 49:10Speaker 1: I'm fucking done with it. I'm done, and I will
- 49:14Speaker 1: continue to make this podcast and I will continue to
- 49:16Speaker 1: talk about these women. I mean, I will talk about
- 49:18Speaker 1: men too, because you know, I'm an equal opportunities person.
- 49:22Speaker 1: But I think we really need to step back and
- 49:25Speaker 1: have perspective and really respect these women, because again, fuck it,
- 49:30Speaker 1: fuck this, fuck that, fuck them, fuck it all. I'm done.
- 49:34Speaker 1: We should have zero tolerance for bullshit and history, regardless
- 49:39Speaker 1: of locale or the person involved. You know, we need
- 49:45Speaker 1: to just have a clear review and not have propaganda
- 49:50Speaker 1: or sensationalism orches convenient lize like cloud or judgment. You know.
- 50:00Speaker 1: That being said, if you enjoyed this episode, you feel
- 50:05Speaker 1: free to rate and review five stars on Spotify, on
- 50:08Speaker 1: Apple podcast or wherever you listen to podcasts. Would be
