- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Chronological Today.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Let's pray.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Father God, thank you so much for this time, and I just pray that you would allow your Holy Spirit to come and just bless us in special, special ways today.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: We look to you for that, and we pray these things in Jesus' name.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: So far in our study, we have seen how God reveals himself in creation through the fall and through the patriarchs.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: So now we're going to see how he reveals himself to his people group that he himself has selected the people of Israel, and we're going to see the things that he wants them to know about him, how he's going to reveal himself.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: The Exodus era covers, let me get this going.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: The Exodus era covers 470 years, three, four hundred and thirty years in Egypt, and then 40 years in the wilderness.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: At this point, Israel has multiplied to approximately 2.5 million, and that number is disputed.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: And so we don't know exactly how many people, but just as God had promised their forefathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, he has made them very prosperous and they have increased.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: And the fact that there were a great number of the Hebrews would be important when they go in to conquer the land in the conquest, which we'll see in just a few weeks.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: But there they divide up between their tribes and they they spread out and they take possession of the land.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: So there needed to be a lot of them in order to actually take over the land.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: More than 300 years after the death of Joseph, another Pharaoh comes on the scene and he doesn't know Joseph and he doesn't remember what Joseph had contributed to them.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: This pharaoh continues to enslave Israel and ordered the death of all the male Hebrew boys.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: When this happens, the children of Israel cried out even more to the Lord and he heard them.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Humanly speaking, there is no way, there's no way for the people of Israel to get out of Egypt, which is exactly what God wants.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: It's the way he likes it, when there's no human way that something can happen, and except by divine intervention by him for having something to happen.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: It would appear that they were at the mercy of Egypt, but actually they were at the mercy of God.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: And he is about to move in more powerful ways, but before he moves in big ways, he's going to move in a really small way.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: An unassuming Hebrew couple is about to have a baby, and it's a boy.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: You may have heard this saying before that when God wants something done in this world, he sends a baby and then he waits.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: That is Moses for sure.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: He was born in a perilous time when out of fear the ruling Pharaoh instructs the Hebrew midwives to kill all the Hebrew boys as they are born.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: What a horrible slaughter and genocide this is.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Exodus chapter 1.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shifra and Pua, When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: But if it is a girl, let her live.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: They let the boys live.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: These are remarkable women.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: So remarkable that God includes them, their names in Scripture.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Moses is the human writer under the direction of the Holy Spirit of the books, the first five books in the Bible, which is Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: And those five books are called the Pentateuch.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: These women are used by God to save Moses and many other Hebrew baby boys.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: These two women risk their lives by defying Pharaoh.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: That's some chutzpah.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Pharaoh calls them and he asks them and says, calls them in, why do you do this?
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Why do you let these Hebrew boys live?
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: And the women say, Well, these Hebrew women are vigorous, and the babies just pop out before we can even get there.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Which is is probably true with some of them, but in some cases this could be seen as a lie.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: I really love what teaching from the heart of Teaching the Heart of the Old Testament says about this issue of lying.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Says this passage is not an affirmation of lying.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: If people ask, does this passage affirm lying?
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: you might want to say as a short answer, if you are ever coerced into committing mass murder by a genocidal maniac, and the only way you can find to get out of the horrendous act is to deceive the genocidal maniac with a lie, I think God will understand.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: If, however, you try to use this passage to justify the kind of self-serving deceit that most of us engage in, which breaks community and destroys trust, that's a big mistake.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: This is not what God is trying to teach us in this passage.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: It's interesting, I think, that their names live on and are still celebrated, while Pharaoh's name didn't even make it into the book.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: There were hundreds and perhaps thousands of Hebrew baby boys that were thrown to their death into the Nile River just because the Pharaoh spoke a word for it to take place.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: The Egyptians worshiped the Nile River.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: And so the baby boys are being thrown into the Nile as a way of worshiping their God.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Out of this unthinkable massacre, a baby boy is saved by God's design.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: His mother, Jacobed, hides him for three months and then builds a little ark and places him in it, and places it in the bull rushes, and then instructs Miriam, his sister, to wait and to watch.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: We know what happened.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Pharaoh's daughter comes down to bathe and she sees the basket and the beautiful baby, Hebrew baby boy, and God moves her heart to want to take him and have him for her own, to raise him as her own son.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Moses is given a princely education in Pharaoh's palace, and both Egypt and Israel are totally unaware that God is answering their prayers right under their noses.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: Let's see what life was like for Moses in Egypt.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: The disciple Stephen, before he is martyred, he's stoned to death, but he tells us, he gives a totally inspired short history of the Jewish people.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: And in chapter 7, um he makes some remarkable claims about Moses.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Whoops, let me go back.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: I missed that one.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Sorry, back there.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: Acts 7, 17 through 22.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: As the time drew near for God to fulfill his promise to Abraham, the number of our people in Egypt had greatly increased.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: At that time, Moses was born, and he was no ordinary child.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: God chose Moses even at birth to work through.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: And we know that God went through extraordinary measures to make sure that he survived.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Moses spent 40 years in the palace in Egypt.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: One day after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: He saw an Egyptian being beating a Hebrew, one of his own people.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Glancing this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: He asked the one in the wrong, Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: The man said, Who made you ruler and judge over us?
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Then Moses was afraid and thought, What I did has become known.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: So that's what happens when he tried to take matters into his own hands.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: God speaking through the martyr Stephen in the book of Acts tells us that Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: Now God had created Moses to be the deliverer of his people.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: He had.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: Excuse me.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: If Moses had been persuasive and eloquent, then Moses and everyone else would have assumed that it was him and not God accomplishing this great thing.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: The deficit in Moses enables the surplus of God.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: The deficit in Moses enables the surplus of God.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: This desert experience has been what God has used to peel away the masks and the facades of royalty that Moses had worn.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: Because he had at one time had worn that.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: And this is a good example for us of how purity precedes power.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: Purity precedes power.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: God purifies us through the trying seasons of our lives so that he can pour out through us unhindered by self.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Unhindered by self.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: That's what Moses is about to learn.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: And evidently it was a necessary lesson.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: Meanwhile, things are going from bad to worse in Egypt for the Israelites.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: Now we've heard that phrase numerous times already, and we're going to hear it a lot more as we go through the Old Testament.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: We will hear the phrase God heard, God saw, God was moved, God was concerned.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: Don't think for a moment that the cries of the oppressed and the enslaved that we have in our world right now are not being heard by God.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: And I don't know about you, but I know that I want to be one of those voices that are crying out for the people, for the oppressed, the enslaved people around the world.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: I want to be one of those voices that God hears.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: And I want to cry out more and more.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: And what a privilege we have to be one of those voices, to cry out for the oppressed, for to cry out for justice for them and for deliverance for them.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: God hadn't forgotten and suddenly remembered his covenant with the patriarchs.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: And the time is now.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: At this Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: God's promise to Abraham obligated him, obligated him to give Abraham a son, a land, a nation, and a blessing.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: He's given him the son.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: And because of the prom that promise to Abraham, God appears, God is coming to the desert to inform Moses that he's about to have that second thing, the land, given to them.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: Which also, because they are developing into a nation, he's going to bless them.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: So he's going to fulfill these promises that he made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: Then God speaks with an agenda.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: I am going to come down.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: God enters time to deliver his people from the land of bondage and from to the land of promise.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: To accomplish his agenda, God gives Moses an assignment.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: So now go, I am sending you to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: Moses needs some assurance to accomplish his assignment.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: And so now he and so he says, Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they ask me what is his name.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: Then what shall I tell them?
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: God said to Moses, I am who I am, I am has sent you.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: And finally we see that God is He is the God of ability.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: Moses asks, What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, The Lord did not appear to you?
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: Then the Lord said to him, What is that in your hand?
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: God is on a mission to redeem his people, and so the Lord, God Almighty, gives Moses special abilities that he didn't have before.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: When God calls, he equips.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: When God calls, he equips.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: After this amazing dialogue with God, Moses launches into five excuses.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: He's like the rest of us.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, seriously, think about it.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: If this assignment was given to you, don't you think you'd come up with a few excuses of your own?
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: I know I would.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: He doesn't, he doesn't feel up to the task and he doesn't feel worthy of the calling.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: We can relate to that too, can't we?
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: The first excuse we see.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Oops, let me go back.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: The first excuse is who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: In essence, I have no authority.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: Who am I?
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: I have no authority.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: And how did God answer this 80-year-old Moses?
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: I will be with you.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: I will be with you.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: God wants Moses to understand that his own, it's not his own pedigree or power that's the issue.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: God's presence is the issue.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: God is going to be with him.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: The second excuse is basically, who are you?
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: Moses said to God, Suppose I go to the Israelites, suppose I do what you tell me to do, and I go to the Israelites and I say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they ask me, What is his name?
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: Then what shall I tell them?
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: We saw this before.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: God answers, I am who I am.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: I am has sent you.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: Moses knows that he's going to have to tell people about God, and he needs to know who he's dealing with.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: God's response is short and to the point.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: I am who I am.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: I am that I am.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: God reveals the great name Yahweh.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: The name Yahweh is used 7,000 times in the Old Testament.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: It's so revered by the Jewish people that they won't even pronounce it.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: They just say the name.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: Its significance here means that God is saying, I'll make myself known to you.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: It's as if he's saying, I'll reveal my character and my identity.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: I am the God who knows and sees and cares and acts, and I am with you.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: The third excuse, what if they don't believe me or listen to me?
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: God's answer, what is that in your hand?
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: What is that in your hand?
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: God responds by equipping him with several miraculous, convincing proofs.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: A rod, which which turns into a serpent, his own hand, which turns leprous, and water, which which when um what water which will turn into blood when it's dropped on the dry ground.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: Moses is afraid, afraid, fear, afraid, that the people will think he's made this whole thing up.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: And his own authority and integrity would be questioned.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: And again, we see how patient God is with him.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: I appreciate, I appreciate God's patience with him.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: Because man, I can come up with some excuses of my own, let me tell you.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: The fourth excuse: I am slow of speech and tongue.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: God answers, who gave man his mouth?
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: Who gave man his mouth?
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: If God can create it, God can fill it.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Remember what was said in Acts 7.22 about Moses?
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: But he's just spent 40 years with sheep in the desert.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Moses has had limited opportunity to wax eloquent or to even improve his people or communication skills.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: That's what we're seeing here.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: His skills have become rusty.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: He had grown up with it in the palace.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: He knows how to do it.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: But now he he doesn't have any confidence in himself.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: And he knows that the people back in Egypt still have all those skills that he feels inadequate with now.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: And so I'm sure there's got to be some comparing himself with them.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: Finally, Moses is out of excuses.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: So he unloads his.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: His fifth and final effort to get out of this assignment.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: Excuse number five.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: Oh Lord, please send someone else to do it.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: And God's answer, Moses, is on the way.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, Aaron is on the way.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: Aaron is on the way.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: I will help both of you speak and I will teach you what to do.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: Moses really doesn't want to go.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: And this, I don't think this is a simple, oh, I really don't want to go, Lord.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: I think this is an a panic attack that he's practically having, saying, I don't want to do this.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: Send somebody else.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: God knew exactly, exactly how he felt.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: And so Aaron was already traveling there.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: In just a few days, Aaron's gonna arrive.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: How gracious of God.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: How gracious.
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: God provides the answer before the need arises.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: Because he knew there would be a need.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: Because he knew there would be the need.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: I love that when God does it.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: It's so cool to see how sensitive and caring God is with his insecure servant.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: I understand that.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: I've had to wrestle with those things myself.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: I don't like standing up in public.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: I like teaching, but I don't like standing up in public.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: And I had to wrestle with that as well.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: We know that God is gracious and he uses Aaron to kind of speak for Moses, but it's not long until Moses finds his voice and his confidence, and he is the one who is speaking directly to Pharaoh for God and from God.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: It's so cool.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: It's comforting to know that God already knows the ability of those he calls, isn't it?
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: It's comforting to know that.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: So he gives us family and he gives us friends to help us accomplish what he calls us to do.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: That's also what we're seeing here.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: Now, why is Moses giving these excuses?
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: He's giving them because he has some skeletons in the closet.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: Actually, he has some skeletons buried in the sand.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: But back in Egypt, he killed a man, an Egyptian.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: And you know he had to have guilt and fear and shame.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: He has run from his past, and if he obeys God, if he obeys him and goes back to Egypt, the past is going to catch up to him.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: And that has to be a pretty terrifying experience to think about that.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: He had been a shepherd now for 40 years, and he was comfortable in that role.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: He was familiar with Egypt, and at one time it was comfortable to him and familiar, but it's become uncomfortable.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: Now he's familiar shepherding sheep in Midian.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: If he goes back, it holds Egypt holds secrets, it holds shame.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: Midian held comfort.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: He comes up with all of these excuses trying to convince God that he should just choose someone else to do this job.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: Was he inadequate for this job?
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes, he was.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: He was totally inadequate.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: None of us are adequate for what God calls us to do.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: And this is one of the biggest assignments anybody has ever been given.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: Ever been given.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: He had to be willing to go.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: And praise God, the same is true for us too.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: We don't have to be adequate because we won't be adequate.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: But we have to be willing to open our hands and to take upon us what God gives us to do.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: We have to be available.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: Moses is out of excuses because God, Almighty, has addressed every single one of them.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: So in his inadequacies, Moses goes down to Egypt and we see God begin to move and show himself mighty on behalf of his people.
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: Afterward, Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, This is what the Lord Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the desert.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: Pharaoh said, Who is the Lord?
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: That I should obey him and let Israel go.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: I do not know Yahweh, and I will not let Israel go.
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: And just like that, Pharaoh's heart is hardened because God moves powerfully.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: You know what happens as soon as Moses and Aaron come?
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: Pharaoh cracks down on the laborers.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: He requires the same number of bricks from them without giving them the materials that they need to make that happen.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: So conditions for the Hebrews go from bad to worst.
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: The people have to be thinking, man, since Moses and Aaron came, claiming that God sent them, things have gone from bad to worse.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: This can't possibly be God's will for us.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: They can't possibly be speaking for him.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: But it was God's will.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: This was how God was going to accomplish this.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: And it was too early for the Israelites to judge God or to come to conclusions based on their circumstances.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: We tend to do the same thing though.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: We look at our circumstances, and if if we see some bad things or some hard things, we think this can't be God's circumstance, it can't be God's will.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: And we've already seen this.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: We saw this last week too.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: Those hard times and difficult circumstances don't feel like God's will.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: We see two really important truths here.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: And that is that it is always too soon to judge God, and we've seen this before.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: And secondly, that God can always exceed our expectations.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: God can always exceed our expectations.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: Why is it too soon for the Israelites to judge God by looking at their circumstances?
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: Because it was because of their circumstances that God is about to act powerfully for them.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: Their circumstances are specifically why he's about to act.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: They don't get better, they get worse.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: It's kind of like when you know you're going to do something for God, and the enemy of your soul knows you're going to do something important for God, what happens?
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: You get attacked.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: Sometimes things, bad things happen.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: Does God exceed their expectations?
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: Boy howdy.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: Yes, he does.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: Do they have to go through some really hairy times first before they see that?
- 29:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they do.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: They do.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: God is not only about to deliver Israel out of Egypt, but he is about to humiliate Pharaoh and all of Egypt's gods.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: This is a profound moment.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: God is proving the impotence of their gods with the power that He alone possesses.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: In Exodus chapter 7 through 12, we see how each of the plagues, these ten plagues, correspond to the gods of the Egyptians.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: If you printed off the handout, it's on this information is on your handout.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: I want to make sure you know that.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: First, the blood, the blood that is poured out.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: That comes against the Egyptian god Osiris.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: Osiris was the god who judged the dead and the underworld.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: They say he was dismembered and then resurrected.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: Notice how that word has the name Siri in it.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: Just saying, just saying.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: But think about this God in relation to human trafficking in really deep, dark places on our planet.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: The second one, the frogs, is the Egyptian god Hekt.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: He was associated with the final stages of childbirth.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: Think about how they threw the babies into the Nile River and think about abortion and the abortion industry.
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: Then the gnats.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: The Egyptian god Set is the one that they come against.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: Set is the god of disorder, violence, and lord of the dry desert places.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: Think about the violence that we've seen in our nation.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: The flies was the Egyptian god Hathor.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: She was a goddess who took on many roles pertaining to music, dance, sexuality, and beauty.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: Think about the arts.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: The livestock, the Egyptian god Apis is the god that that was coming against.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: And Apis was a sacred bull.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: What's the symbol on Wall Street and of Wall Street?
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: So think banking systems.
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: And the boils, the Egyptian god Typhon.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: This god had 100 heads of serpents, and each head of the snake made a babble of screaming sounds, which spat out showers of poison from his throat.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: Think technology and think about all the talking heads that we have.
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: And then the hail, the Egyptian god Shu.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: Shu was depicted as the dry air atmosphere between the earth and sky, separating the true the two realms.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: Think climate.
- 32:51SPEAKER_00: The locusts.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: The locusts was the Egyptian god Serapus.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: This god is symbolized by abundance and success.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: And then the darkness.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: This was the Egyptian god Ra.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: He is the god of the sun, of order, of kings, and of the sky.
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: Ra is one of the most worshipped of all the Egyptian gods.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: So think political power.
- 33:21SPEAKER_00: And how interesting that God blocked the sun and brought darkness to the God who represents the sun.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: How cool is that! And then the death of the firstborn is coming against all the gods.
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: Now I've known for several years how these plagues parallel to these gods.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: But until I researched this the other day, really researched this, I didn't understand the significance of this, and I was completely blown away whenever I saw how they correspond to the issues of our day, right now.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: Human trafficking in underground places, the abortion industry, violence, entertainment, the banking finance systems, technology, climate change, success affluence culture, and politics in power.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: The biggies right now.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: The big ones.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: Are there still demonic gods, small g gods, impacting our current culture?
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: Do we need any more evidence that the same gods who messed with the Egyptians are messing with us currently in our world?
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: No, we don't need any more evidence than that.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: They are still feeding off the worship of people who are disillusioned and who are distant from God.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: They still want the worship.
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: Those gods didn't go anywhere.
- 35:13SPEAKER_00: They're still here.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: We need a big G God movement right now.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: That's what we need.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: We need Yahweh to come and once again show the impotence of the gods, the demons of this world in a powerful way.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: That's what we need.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: And that's what I'm crying out for with my entire being.
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: That's what I'm crying out for.
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: And it will happen.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: It will happen.
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: And the last one, the death of the firstborn.
- 35:52SPEAKER_00: The death of God's only firstborn son defeats all other gods.
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: All gods.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: Praise his name.
- 36:05SPEAKER_00: Still Pharaoh refuses to bend, and it's only after the death of the firstborn in his own household that Pharaoh releases the Hebrews to go and worship their God Yahweh.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: So God tells the Hebrews what they need to do to be protected from the death angel.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: He's very specific in his instructions, and he directs the Israelites to take a year-old male lamb without defect and watch it for four days, and then slaughter them, all those lambs, at twilight.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: Then they are to take the blood from the lamb, and with hyssop they are to put it on the door frames and the posts of the of their homes, and then they are to eat the lambs.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: Do not leave any of it until morning.
- 36:54SPEAKER_00: If some is left till morning, you must burn it.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: This is how you are whoa.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: This is how you are to eat it.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: Hold on a second.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: This just totally went blank.
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 37:19SPEAKER_00: Getting there.
- 37:21SPEAKER_00: Okay, this is how you are to eat it.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: Wait.
- 37:30SPEAKER_00: Do not leave any of it until morning.
- 37:31SPEAKER_00: If some is left till morning, you must burn it.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: This is how you are to eat it.
- 37:35SPEAKER_00: With your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand.
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: Eat it in haste.
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: It is the Lord's Passover.
- 37:43SPEAKER_00: On that same night, I will pass.
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: I, the Lord, will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: I am the Lord.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: And when I see the blood, I will pass over you.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: God's judgment on the Egyptians and their gods is about to be completed.
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: The death of the spotless lamb and its blood smeared on the door frames of their houses is what will protect them when death comes knocking on their door.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: Jesus and his death as the Lamb of God perfectly parallels with the Passover.
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: And when we get to the crucifixion of Christ, we will see how beautifully this event corresponds with his death, burial, and resurrection.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: We learn another lesson from this too.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: We need to be living this life ready to leave.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: Live ready to leave.
- 40:13SPEAKER_00: What's going to happen at the rapture when Jesus comes for his church?
- 40:18SPEAKER_00: He explains it in 1 Thessalonians 4:16.
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: For the Lord Himself will come down from heaven with a loud command and with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God.
- 40:30SPEAKER_00: And the dead in Christ will rise first.
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: After that, we who are alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.
- 40:39SPEAKER_00: And so we will be with the Lord forever.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: We need to live ready to leave.
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: That's how we need to live because we don't know when we're going to hear that trumpet or ramshorn.
- 40:53SPEAKER_00: And so we have to be ready.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: And it could be any time, it could be any moment.
- 40:59SPEAKER_00: People are prone to forget what God has done for them.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: And so commemorating the Passover with a feast year after year would give the succeeding generations of Israelites the opportunity to tell this story again and again to the following generations.
- 41:19SPEAKER_00: The Passover was God's way of keeping the story alive for them.
- 41:25SPEAKER_00: And it's a very hands-on commemoration.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: When I was in Bible college in Florida, South Florida, the Bible college that I was at, people would always call and ask the Bible college girls if they would if they would come and help with the Passover.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: And I always said yes, because I loved observing it.
- 41:46SPEAKER_00: It was so cool.
- 41:48SPEAKER_00: But what do we believers today remember?
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: How do we remember Jesus' sacrifice on the cross?
- 41:57SPEAKER_00: Communion.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: Communion is where we remember the blood that was poured out for us and the body that was broken for us.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: When you take communion, you need to see this as corresponding to the Passover.
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: And we and God instructs us to do it often and as often as we do it to remember what Jesus has done.
- 42:18SPEAKER_00: And now we're going to see some interesting things about how God leads the people.
- 42:25SPEAKER_00: When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter.
- 42:31SPEAKER_00: For God said, if they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: So God led the people around in the desert road toward the Red Sea.
- 42:41SPEAKER_00: And the Israelites went up out of Egypt, armed for battle.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: God is taking them on a detour.
- 42:50SPEAKER_00: And why is he taking them on the longer route around?
- 42:55SPEAKER_00: Because they were fearful.
- 42:57SPEAKER_00: They're afraid.
- 42:58SPEAKER_00: And he was protecting them because that was what was best for them.
- 43:04SPEAKER_00: It wasn't the shortest route, but it was best for them.
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: The people weren't ready.
- 43:09SPEAKER_00: And if they faced too much adversity here right at the beginning, they might change their mind.
- 43:16SPEAKER_00: God had to get them ready to take over the promised land.
- 43:21SPEAKER_00: And that would take approximately 40 years in the desert to do that.
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: The people were afraid, and their natural inclination would have been and was to go back to what was familiar.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: Even though it was slavery, it was familiar slavery.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: God knew this about them, and um and that they would be tempted to go back into bondage.
- 43:48SPEAKER_00: So God graciously leads them to an easier but longer route.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: Notice too that the Israelites went up ready for battle.
- 43:57SPEAKER_00: They anticipated what they were going to fight.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Face and they were ready for it, sort of.
- 44:03SPEAKER_00: They had the gear, but they didn't have the know-how.
- 44:05SPEAKER_00: They've been slaves.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: They don't know how to be fighters.
- 44:08SPEAKER_00: They don't know how to be soldiers.
- 44:10SPEAKER_00: And so God literally is taking them around in circles here in the desert.
- 44:16SPEAKER_00: They start to go one way and then they stop and they go back the other way.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: And I can just imagine following Moses and talking with one another and saying, um, didn't we just, didn't we just pass that signpost?
- 44:31SPEAKER_00: I feel like we just are going in circles.
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: It's a bad situation and it's about to get even worse once again.
- 44:40SPEAKER_00: As we continue to read in Exodus, we discover that this detour is taking them to the Red Sea, where they will face an impossible situation.
- 44:52SPEAKER_00: God is purposely leading them from a fearful situation to an impossible situation.
- 45:00SPEAKER_00: Then the Lord said to Moses, Tell the Israelites to turn back and encamp near Pi Haroth, near Migdal by the sea.
- 45:07SPEAKER_00: They are to encamp by the sea, directly opposite Belzephan.
- 45:12SPEAKER_00: Pharaoh will think, the Israelites are wandering around the land in confusion, hemmed in by the desert.
- 45:19SPEAKER_00: And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he will pursue them, but I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh, and all his army and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.
- 45:34SPEAKER_00: So the Israelites did this.
- 45:36SPEAKER_00: What is the outcome that God is after here?
- 45:39SPEAKER_00: He's after glory for himself and for the Egyptians to know that he is Yahweh, Lord Almighty.
- 45:49SPEAKER_00: The purpose of this God-directed tour was to showcase God's glory both to the enemies, their enemies, and to Israel, and for the sake of their own faith and trust in Him.
- 46:04SPEAKER_00: This is going to be a huge lesson for these weak-hearted people.
- 46:10SPEAKER_00: Does God ever do the same thing for us?
- 46:13SPEAKER_00: The answer is yes.
- 46:15SPEAKER_00: At times he detours us into the desert places for our good, to carve some character into us so that his glory will be on display for others to see.
- 46:32SPEAKER_00: God is so committed to our growth that he is willing to use detours and the unfamiliar to accomplish it.
- 46:42SPEAKER_00: Listen to this promise in Isaiah 42, 16.
- 46:47SPEAKER_00: I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths.
- 46:53SPEAKER_00: I will guide them.
- 47:01SPEAKER_00: These are the things I will do.
- 47:03SPEAKER_00: I will not forsake them.
- 47:06SPEAKER_00: God will not forsake us in the detours of our lives.
- 47:10SPEAKER_00: No matter how it feels, and even when we don't feel Him, we can have confidence and trust that He is leading us and that He's guiding us, that He is good and that He is gracious and that He is sovereign.
- 47:29SPEAKER_00: Let's not forget how much these people have already seen God do.
- 47:34SPEAKER_00: I mean, they've just seen Him work in powerful ways through those ten plagues and the death of the firstborn.
- 47:42SPEAKER_00: Sometimes God leads us on detours so we can see the impossible happen.
- 47:49SPEAKER_00: So we can see it.
- 47:50SPEAKER_00: Exodus 14, 5 through 9.
- 47:52SPEAKER_00: When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds about them and said, What have we done?
- 48:00SPEAKER_00: We have let the Israelites go and have lost their services.
- 48:03SPEAKER_00: So they had his chair, so he had his chariot made ready and took his army with them.
- 48:07SPEAKER_00: He took 600 of the best chariots along with all the other chariots of Egypt, with officers over them.
- 48:15SPEAKER_00: The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, so that he pursued the Israelites, who were marching out boldly.
- 48:24SPEAKER_00: The Egyptians, all Pharaoh's horses and chariots, horsemen and troops, pursued the Israelites and overtook them as they camped near the sea by Pihareth, near opposite Belziphan.
- 48:37SPEAKER_00: So the sea is before them.
- 48:39SPEAKER_00: The vast army of Egypt is behind them.
- 48:42SPEAKER_00: They are ready to fight, but they know that they are in an impossible situation.
- 48:49SPEAKER_00: And for God's purposes, they are right where he wants them to be.
- 48:55SPEAKER_00: As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up and there were the Egyptians marching after them.
- 49:01SPEAKER_00: They were terrified and cried out to the Lord.
- 49:04SPEAKER_00: They said to Moses, Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die?
- 49:10SPEAKER_00: What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt?
- 49:14SPEAKER_00: Didn't we say to you in Egypt, Leave us alone, let us serve the Egyptians.
- 49:18SPEAKER_00: We don't care.
- 49:19SPEAKER_00: It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die here in the desert.
- 49:24SPEAKER_00: Notice that in their fear they cry out to the Lord, which is the right thing for them to do.
- 49:29SPEAKER_00: But then they look at their circumstances and they said, This doesn't make any sense.
- 49:35SPEAKER_00: We're in an impossible situation because of you.
- 49:38SPEAKER_00: You should have just left us in Egypt.
- 49:40SPEAKER_00: Though Egypt was slavery and drudgery for the Hebrews, it was at least familiar slavery.
- 49:47SPEAKER_00: Egypt was purposeless drudgery, making bricks out of straw, but at least it was familiar, predictable drudgery.
- 49:57SPEAKER_00: God was teaching them something new, and it was uncomfortable because to those with the mindset of a slave, let me go back.
- 50:08SPEAKER_00: To those with the mindset of a slave, familiarity is better than freedom.
- 50:14SPEAKER_00: What an incredible truth that is.
- 50:17SPEAKER_00: You can take the people out of Egypt, but it's more difficult to get Egypt out of the people.
- 50:22SPEAKER_00: And poor Moses.
- 50:25SPEAKER_00: He's finding that it's a lot harder to shepherd people than it is to shepherd sheep, that's for sure.
- 50:31SPEAKER_00: And he stands there and he reassuringly answers them as if he's addressing his sheep.
- 50:38SPEAKER_00: Do not be afraid.
- 50:41SPEAKER_00: Stand firm, and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today.
- 50:49SPEAKER_00: The Egyptians you see, you will never see again.
- 50:52SPEAKER_00: The Lord will fight for you.
- 50:54SPEAKER_00: You need only to be still.
- 50:59SPEAKER_00: When you are faced with impossible situations, it's hard to trust.
- 51:04SPEAKER_00: When things are out of control, fear will be prevalent.
- 51:09SPEAKER_00: That's just a given.
- 51:11SPEAKER_00: God knows this about us, and and his word to us is what it was to Israel.
- 51:19SPEAKER_00: You need only to be still.
- 51:38SPEAKER_00: He has been and he will.
- 51:41SPEAKER_00: The only way the people of Israel would walk away to freedom from the powerful army of the Egyptians was if God worked on their behalf once again.
- 51:51SPEAKER_00: He had totally set them up and orchestrated this entire sequence from the beginning of their captivity until their freedom.
- 52:04SPEAKER_00: To this point, he set them up.
- 52:07SPEAKER_00: The Lord tells Moses to raise his staff and hold it out, hold his hand out over the sea so the people can walk through on dry ground, and they do.
- 52:16SPEAKER_00: The Egyptians go in after them and are swallowed up by the receding water.
- 52:20SPEAKER_00: And in verse 18, God says, The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.
- 52:31SPEAKER_00: It must have been pretty important for God that the Egyptians and all the other nations would know that he had fought powerfully for Israel and just how powerful he was.
- 52:45SPEAKER_00: His power demonstrated on Israel's behalf was the glory that was on display for all the nations to see.
- 52:53SPEAKER_00: From this, we learned that the detours and trials of our lives are not always just for our benefit.
- 53:00SPEAKER_00: Sometimes they are for the benefit of others.
- 53:04SPEAKER_00: And I would say practically always they are for the benefit of others.
- 53:09SPEAKER_00: Later, when the two spies go into Jericho and they meet the prostitute Rahab, this is what she tells them.
- 53:17SPEAKER_00: Listen to this.
- 53:19SPEAKER_00: I know that the Lord has given you this land, and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you.
- 53:33SPEAKER_00: We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea.
- 53:38SPEAKER_00: When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear, and everyone's courage failed because of you.
- 53:45SPEAKER_00: For the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on earth below.
- 53:53SPEAKER_00: That was his objective, and I would say his objective was met and fulfilled.
- 53:59SPEAKER_00: Sometimes, almost always, the detours of our lives are to help others catch a glimpse of our all-powerful God.
- 54:11SPEAKER_00: We've probably all been impacted by watching people go through difficult detours.
- 54:17SPEAKER_00: When we hear them give glory to God for the ways that He has shown up in their lives and through their circumstances, it blesses us.
- 54:27SPEAKER_00: When we see and hear their faith and trust in the midst of the difficulties, God is glorified.
- 54:34SPEAKER_00: We will never know this side of heaven.
- 54:38SPEAKER_00: How much glory God has received through what we have gone through.
- 54:44SPEAKER_00: We won't know until we get to heaven.
- 54:46SPEAKER_00: And we will not know how God has used us in the lives of others until then, and until we get to heaven.
- 54:55SPEAKER_00: In heaven, we will see what was accomplished through every detour, through our obedience to go there with God, even in every difficulty and every impossibility.
- 55:15SPEAKER_00: And he's gonna make sure that we know that it was all worth it.
- 55:19SPEAKER_00: That it was all worth it, that it was to bring glory to our glorious God.
- 55:29SPEAKER_00: And when we see him in all of his glory, we will know that it was absolutely worth it.
- 55:36SPEAKER_00: And it will all make sense then.
- 55:39SPEAKER_00: Moses has experienced that.
- 55:42SPEAKER_00: He knows that.
- 55:43SPEAKER_00: He knows that his obedience was hard, that he had a difficult assignment.
- 55:49SPEAKER_00: But how much God used him through that.
- 55:53SPEAKER_00: We see through a glass dimly now, but there we will see clearly.
- 55:59SPEAKER_00: Let's pray.
- 56:00SPEAKER_00: Thank you, Father, so much.
- 56:03SPEAKER_00: We thank you that we can trust you.
- 56:06SPEAKER_00: And this is just an example of how we can trust you.
- 56:10SPEAKER_00: I thank you that every detail of this narrative, this story that you are telling is profound and is displaying your glory.
