- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in First Timothy
- 0:18chapter 4, verses one through 6, First Timothy chapter 4 and
- 0:23verses one through 6. This is the apostle Paul.
- 0:27He's writing to his son in the faith, Timothy, who is pastoring
- 0:30there in the church at Ephesus that Paul himself had started.
- 0:33He'd spent three years there, and he had left behind Timothy
- 0:38at the church so that Timothy could help with some of the
- 0:41false teachers and false doctrine that was going on at
- 0:46the church. And so we learned today some of
- 0:50the specifics of what was going on.
- 0:53So there's been a lot of generic talk in the verses preceding
- 0:58this. In the three chapters so far,
- 1:01what we have heard is there's been like fables, genealogies,
- 1:06speculations, like those were things that were being taught in
- 1:09the church that Timothy was called to reject that.
- 1:12And instead instead he was called to preach the gospel that
- 1:18had saved and transformed Paul. That Timothy had learned growing
- 1:23up, that some people had tossed it away, but the gospel was the
- 1:27thing that Timothy was supposed to focus on.
- 1:29And so we're going to read through these verses today and
- 1:33see some more things that if someone is teaching this, you
- 1:37should ignore them. And I'll, I'll tell you guys
- 1:41right on the outset, even as I read through this list, some
- 1:46specific teachings came to mind that I went, Oh yeah, that
- 1:50sounds a lot. This sounds a lot like that.
- 1:54And so if those come to mind, know that I am not trying to
- 1:58pick on any particular group, but we always need to come back
- 2:03to the word of God to say it doesn't matter what a specific
- 2:07person or what a specific denomination teaches.
- 2:11We need to be focused on what does the Bible say and what is
- 2:16the gospel that Jesus died for our sins, or as Paul phrased it
- 2:22in chapter 1, Christ. Christ Jesus came to save
- 2:27sinners. And he says, and I'm the chief
- 2:30of them. And so that is the message that
- 2:34we hold onto and that we pursue. That's the main message of the
- 2:38Church, so let's read together verses one through 6.
- 2:42Now the Spirit explicitly says that in latter times some will
- 2:48depart from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits
- 2:52and the teachings of demons through the hypocrisy of liars
- 2:56whose consciences are seared. They forbid marriage and demand
- 3:01abstinence from foods that God created to be received with
- 3:06gratitude by those who believe and know the truth.
- 3:09For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be
- 3:14rejected if it is received with Thanksgiving, since it is
- 3:18sanctified by the Word of God and by prayer.
- 3:22If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you
- 3:25will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished by the words of
- 3:29faith and the good teaching that you have followed.
- 3:34All right, let's dive first into verse #1 I'm actually right now
- 3:38preaching through John 14 through 16, which talks a lot
- 3:43about the Holy Spirit. And so even as I'm reading these
- 3:46verses, I'm remembering what literally I was writing in my
- 3:51sermon today about the Holy Spirit guiding the disciples
- 3:56into all truth. And Jesus told them the Spirit
- 3:59will tell you things to come. That even as you think about the
- 4:02life of John and that he was the one that wrote Revelation.
- 4:06And so certainly as he's reflecting back on his time with
- 4:10Jesus that he goes, yeah, Jesus told me that the Spirit would
- 4:14tell us things to come. And now the Spirit has done it.
- 4:18And here the Spirit that lived in John and in the rest of the
- 4:24apostles also lived in Paul and in Timothy.
- 4:27And so Paul tells Timothy something that he needed to
- 4:31know, that the Spirit explicitly says this isn't guesswork.
- 4:35This is directly from the mouth of the Holy Spirit.
- 4:39He says that in latter times, some will depart from the faith.
- 4:44All right. This first part is that not
- 4:47every person that starts off in, in the church, in Christianity,
- 4:55in being a Jesus follower, not every person that starts the
- 4:59journey will end the journey. Some will leave.
- 5:03And that's something that's really important for us to take
- 5:07note of because number one, we can pray like God, would you?
- 5:14Would you keep me safe within your truth?
- 5:17Like would you keep me walking in your way?
- 5:22That we would have a desire to follow Jesus, not just for a
- 5:26year or a couple decades, but for all of our life until he
- 5:31calls us home. May we be faithful to follow
- 5:34Jesus and not abandon Him. But Paul says some will depart
- 5:38from the faith, and he gives some of the reasons why.
- 5:42He says they will depart from the faith, paying attention to
- 5:46deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons through the
- 5:51hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared.
- 5:56OK, there is satanic opposition, there is demonic opposition to
- 6:03the work and word of Jesus. And so those that will leave the
- 6:07faith, they are not just, if you will, they're not just leaving a
- 6:12church. They are paying attention to
- 6:14lying demons who in communicating with a person's
- 6:19inner soul will say you don't really need the church or the
- 6:23church is filled with imperfect people and you can only ever
- 6:26experience pain here and so you need to leave lying demons that
- 6:32would say there is greater love or purpose to be found not
- 6:38within following Jesus, but in following your own way or in
- 6:42following this other false God. It is incredibly easier to see
- 6:50nowadays because of like social media and different things like
- 6:54that, that people often turn their backs on God and they'll
- 7:00give 1000 different reasons for why they turn their back on God.
- 7:06But even as a pastor, what I've seen again and again is it
- 7:12almost always results in immorality, greed, or in a new
- 7:20found devotion to some form of alternate religion.
- 7:26Like whether that is atheism, whether it's, you know, going
- 7:31wholesale into some cult or other world religion that most
- 7:40of the time someone then becomes militantly against Jesus, that
- 7:46it's not simply a well, I, you know, used to believe that.
- 7:52I still think it might be true, but I'm just kind of doing my
- 7:55own thing now. Very rarely have I ever seen
- 7:58that to be the case. When someone turns their back on
- 8:03Jesus here, they depart from the faith demons whose main ways of
- 8:10interacting with mankind is to provoke them towards immorality,
- 8:15sexual immorality, greed, a love and pursuit, and all consuming
- 8:22desire for money and power, whether that's political power.
- 8:28Sometimes in other cases it can be through domination, sometimes
- 8:35verbal domination. Some of the heaviest verbal
- 8:40abuse that I've ever experienced has been from those who once
- 8:48purported themselves to be Christians, turn their back on
- 8:51Jesus, and now are just vehement about their despising of
- 9:00Christianity and Jesus in the word of God.
- 9:05So here this is, this is a heavy thought.
- 9:09Like I, I, I don't ever want it to come across as though, as I'm
- 9:13saying this, it's like, Oh yeah, you know, this just happens.
- 9:15No, this breaks my heart. And I've got people within my
- 9:20kind of extended family that this is their exact story.
- 9:25And as I look at their lives each and every week or each and
- 9:30every month of my life, it becomes very apparent.
- 9:34Yeah, Satan and his demons, they have lied to that person.
- 9:40They have lied to that family member of mine and they are now
- 9:44walking in a path that leads to the destruction of their own
- 9:47soul and this is not what God has for them.
- 9:51So here these spirits are deceitful.
- 9:54It is lying and the teachings of demons through the hypocrisy of
- 10:00liars whose consciences are seared.
- 10:05Very rarely will you find someone that has once been
- 10:10walking with Jesus and then walked away from him entirely
- 10:15that did it all by themselves. Very often there was someone
- 10:19either in their life, there's someone that they found, you
- 10:24know, videos or teachings online that they began to follow this
- 10:29person into the bad path, or they found their rationale for
- 10:34why they wanted to leave from an individual.
- 10:38And here Paul describes these types of people as hypocritical
- 10:46liars with seared consciences. The word hypocrite, it carries a
- 10:52specific connotation nowadays that it carried a slightly
- 10:55different connotation in Bible times.
- 11:00Nowadays when we see the word hypocrite, we think someone that
- 11:03is intentionally trying to bamboozle someone else.
- 11:08That's not what the word hypocrite meant 2000 years ago.
- 11:12It was if you will, it was the the word actor that it is a
- 11:18person that is playing a part. It's not meant to be necessarily
- 11:22nefarious, but it is a person who is a bit player.
- 11:27And so within this context, this is someone who, as he says,
- 11:33hypocrisy of liars, whose consciences are seared, that
- 11:37there are people who are feeding you or feeding your loved ones
- 11:41lies about who God is, about what his character is, about
- 11:45what the word of God has to say. And they do not often, they do
- 11:50not know that they are playing a part, that the demons who hate
- 11:54their souls want them to play. And because they have gone
- 11:58against God's will and word so often, their consciences that
- 12:04should be telling them, hey, that's wrong, that that's not in
- 12:08line with what you were made for.
- 12:11This is not truth because they have silenced that voice inside
- 12:16of them so often their conscience is no longer even
- 12:19tell them that what they are proclaiming to others is false
- 12:24and will lead to destruction. This is a abysmal sight and this
- 12:31is not something that we should ever gloat in.
- 12:33This is not something that we should ever just have a hard
- 12:36heartedness to say. Oh yeah, well, that person,
- 12:40they're just too far gone. No, this is a heartbreaking turn
- 12:44of events because we don't want to be on team Demons.
- 12:49The the Demons and Devils, these evil spirits, they want people
- 12:55to be in this spot. They want people to abandon
- 12:58Jesus. They want people to, if you
- 13:00will, spread a false gospel to turn to turn others away from
- 13:06God. Because the demons know what
- 13:09humans often suppress. The demons know that the end
- 13:14result is death forever and ever.
- 13:17The end result is hell. And so we as the children of God
- 13:22should not be like, OK, well, you know, there's various
- 13:26different atheistic and agnostic individuals in the culture
- 13:32today, guys like Richard Dawkins or Alex.
- 13:38I can't remember what his last name is, but it starts with AK.
- 13:42Several others that I've seen online that just their entire
- 13:46life purpose is to dissuade people from believing in the
- 13:51Word of God and in Jesus that the word of God proclaims and
- 13:56shows to us. And for those individuals, we
- 14:00should never have a Glee about their downfall.
- 14:03We should never be indifferent to the state of their souls.
- 14:07We ought to go, man, those demons want these individuals
- 14:11and all those that they teach to end up in hell with them.
- 14:15They, we, we should have a mindset.
- 14:19We want to see these people transformed like Paul, the chief
- 14:23of sinners, was transformed into a missionary and an apostle.
- 14:28That should be our desire. So pray for those who right now
- 14:34have are not walking with Jesus, do not profess him as their
- 14:37Savior. Pray that God would open their
- 14:41eyes so that they would be able to see the beauty of Christ and
- 14:45His truth and His way, and that they would pursue Him and not
- 14:49their own ends. Verse #3 then gives.
- 14:54Here's some of the teaching that these false teachers will have
- 14:58in latter times. It says they forbid marriage and
- 15:02demand abstinence from foods that God created to be received
- 15:07with gratitude by those who believe and know the truth.
- 15:12False teachers will say that what God has made for us is
- 15:17actually bad. That's a little bit of a
- 15:20simplification there, but this is something that we see over
- 15:24and over again throughout church history.
- 15:26We frankly even see it in some denominations today that purport
- 15:32to be Christian and yet follow what is what we're told in the
- 15:37Word of God are doctrines, teachings of demons.
- 15:42So marriage is good. Our our culture very often does
- 15:49not view marriage as good. Or at the very least they would
- 15:54say heterosexual marriage is not good.
- 15:58And there will always be power imbalances between men and
- 16:02women, that there cannot be mutual love and care and respect
- 16:08within a home, that men will always take advantage of women.
- 16:12And so it's always going to be to a woman's disadvantage to be
- 16:16married. Has that been true in the past?
- 16:20Has that been true in many marriages today?
- 16:23Yes. However, that is not God's
- 16:26design for marriage. God's design for marriage is a
- 16:30husband sacrificing himself for his wife, caring for her needs,
- 16:36giving her love like supporting her in every way, and a wife
- 16:43loving her husband and caring for him in submission and and
- 16:50adopting his like direction and mission for the home just as the
- 16:55church does with Jesus. Like that's God's mission for
- 17:00marriage. And so God views marriage as
- 17:02good. God put together the first
- 17:05marriage with Adam and Eve and Jesus like he has given marriage
- 17:11to us as a picture of his relationship with the church
- 17:15which is his bride. So those that listen to demons
- 17:20will hate marriage. They will want to destroy
- 17:23marriages and break them apart Over church history.
- 17:27Sometimes this is looked like, well, the flesh and everything
- 17:31about the flesh and its desires is bad.
- 17:34So therefore like you should do a whole ton of fasting because
- 17:40like food and and drink is bad and so you should only have what
- 17:47you need of it in order to survive.
- 17:50Or they would say, you know, fleshly desires, if you will,
- 17:57I'll say it this way, the desire for human intimacy with your
- 18:01spouse. Well, that that can be a bad
- 18:06thing. And so that's a desire of the
- 18:08flesh. And so marriage is bad because
- 18:11it, if you will, it gives you an opportunity for this marital
- 18:15intimacy. And so they would say this is
- 18:18something that you should reject.
- 18:20And we we forbid it. That is a here a teaching of
- 18:26demons. Marriage is good.
- 18:28If you are not currently married, I want to encourage you
- 18:32like pursue marriage. Find a good godly man or woman,
- 18:38the opposite of whatever gender you are.
- 18:41That's very important. So find a good godly potential
- 18:46spouse, choose I'm not going to, you know, date them for 10 years
- 18:53and then maybe I'll decide to get engaged and then we'll be
- 18:56engaged for five years and then maybe I'll marry them.
- 18:58No, no, like pursue marriage. This is God made Adam and day
- 19:04one of Adam being created, he made Eve and brought him to him.
- 19:08Now, I'm not saying, you know, do the, I know they have like 90
- 19:12Day Fiance or married at first sight or something like that.
- 19:16There's a bunch of shows like that nowadays.
- 19:18That's not what I'm advocating for.
- 19:20But don't put it off like years and years or don't put a decade
- 19:24between you beginning to date or court or whatever you want to
- 19:29call it a a potential spouse. Like when you know this person
- 19:33genuinely loves Jesus from the heart and wants to follow him
- 19:37with their life, like lock that thing down.
- 19:40The the greatest, the happiest, one of the most wonderful things
- 19:43that I've ever done in my life has been to marry Samantha Buck.
- 19:48And we, we got married a little under three years from when we
- 19:54first met. So we met in March of 2016.
- 19:58And then we got married, OK, actually, so just over three
- 20:02years and we got married in May of 2019.
- 20:06And that was the best decision that I have ever made outside of
- 20:11my salvation in my life. I, I love my kids, I love my
- 20:15church, all that. Those do not compare.
- 20:19Those choices do not compare to the choice of my spouse and I
- 20:23want to affirm Contra the the words of our culture, marriage
- 20:29is good. It is a wonderful thing that
- 20:32ought to bring joy and peace and strengthening to your life.
- 20:39If your marriage doesn't currently look like that, I want
- 20:42to encourage you. It is absolutely possible.
- 20:46Talk to a Well, I'll say first talk to your pastors.
- 20:52They are there to be able to help you to live out God's will
- 20:56together. They are for you.
- 20:58They are for your marriage. They want your marriage to go in
- 21:01a good direction. They don't want your marriage to
- 21:05be destroyed like Satan wants your marriage to be destroyed.
- 21:08So see your pastors for some of you, maybe you might have some
- 21:12issues that are a little bit past, maybe even what your
- 21:15pastor might be able to do all by himself.
- 21:19And so I encourage you if you have talked to your pastors and
- 21:22you're like, we are still really in some need right now, talk to
- 21:26a marriage counselor or therapist.
- 21:28Like God has placed so many people, especially here in the
- 21:32US, so many people that will be able to help you.
- 21:36Marriage is a wonderful gift from God and it is for like your
- 21:41holiness, it is for your joy and fulfillment of God's mission
- 21:46within your life. So love and treasure marriage.
- 21:52I'll, I'll say this as well. This might get me in a little
- 21:55trouble. I don't really care for the
- 21:57denominations that would say are spiritual leaders cannot marry
- 22:05like they are forbidden from marrying.
- 22:07That is not a biblical position to take.
- 22:10Now, I I recognize that they would say, OK, well, if you look
- 22:14over here at at First Corinthians 7, we're going to
- 22:18ignore like the historical context in which Paul is
- 22:22talking. We're going to ignore the fact
- 22:26that Paul explicitly says, hey, I'm saying this as a person that
- 22:31is currently single and able to dedicate my entire life to the
- 22:35Lord, he says. But I am saying this, not the
- 22:39Lord. I I have seen people take verses
- 22:44from First Corinthians 7 out of context to then say, and This is
- 22:49why none of our regular declares of God's word can be married.
- 22:56It's prohibited to them. I think that would fall solidly
- 23:00under opposition to the Word of God and what it says here.
- 23:03That is in fact a doctrine of demons to teach that.
- 23:08So if you don't like that, it's too bad got to continue.
- 23:12They forbid marriage and they demand abstinence from foods
- 23:16that God created to be received with gratitude by those who
- 23:20believe and know the truth. The way that we see the show up
- 23:24most often in the New Testament is that God declared the Old
- 23:30Testament law fulfilled in Christ, that New Testament
- 23:34believers no longer had to follow what was a mandatory
- 23:39under the old covenant. Now we have been given the new
- 23:42covenant and sometimes you would have those that had lived had
- 23:46operated under the old covenant. That said, we are going to
- 23:50continue with the dietary restrictions from the old
- 23:54covenant and we're going to tell you guys that you can't, we
- 23:57cannot eat these foods while we are in the new covenant.
- 24:03And Paul says no, everything what he says in verse 4,
- 24:08everything created by God is good.
- 24:11So as God has created it, we are not to reject any of it if it's
- 24:16received with Thanksgiving that we thank the Lord for it.
- 24:18We recognize that whatever we put into our bodies, when we do
- 24:24it as an act of worship to the Lord, what we're in verse 5,
- 24:28it's sanctified by the word of God and prayer that God's
- 24:32express revelation is you can enjoy that ham sandwich or that
- 24:37BLT or you can enjoy a cheeseburger to the glory of God
- 24:43as you thank the Lord for it and you thank him for his provision
- 24:47and you recognize even with the Holy Spirit within you.
- 24:50One of my favorite things from the book of Leviticus was that
- 24:54the fellowship offering that you give, like you sacrifice some
- 24:59stuff to the Lord and you have part of the food as well, and
- 25:03you're supposed to eat it within three days.
- 25:05And this is a fellowship meal between you and God.
- 25:08It's such a cool thought. And with the Holy Spirit living
- 25:11inside of me, every meal that I eat now is a fellowship meal
- 25:15that God is with me. And I just love that thought.
- 25:19So as we thank the Lord for the food that we have, we do not
- 25:23have to be limited in what we eat to only what was allowed in
- 25:29the old covenant. These are one of these those
- 25:32passages here in First Timothy 4.
- 25:34This is one of those passages that explicitly declared to us
- 25:37the Old covenant is done, the new covenant has come.
- 25:41We have a new way of relating with God that is based on like
- 25:45truth and our relationship with Jesus, if you will, the spirit
- 25:49of the law, not the letter of the law that we had in the Old
- 25:53Testament. We can certainly continue to
- 25:55learn things from the Old Testament and it shows us what
- 25:58Jesus did for us, and we can grab the principles of what we
- 26:03learn in the Old Testament so that we operate in the spirit of
- 26:06what God wants here in the New Testament.
- 26:10But those that would forbid food, I think even again, I
- 26:17might get in more trouble during the Lent season where people are
- 26:25prohibited from eating meat during some specific times.
- 26:29And it is a measure of like their faithfulness or commitment
- 26:33to God that is not outlined in Scripture.
- 26:36And here nothing created by God is to be rejected.
- 26:41Every food that God has created is to be received with gratitude
- 26:45by those who believe and know the truth.
- 26:47It is good and nothing is to be rejected if it's received with
- 26:50Thanksgiving since it's sanctified by the word of God in
- 26:53prayer. If you voluntarily if you want
- 26:56to give up meat because it's particularly like filling and
- 27:00all that and you want to be able to have, if you will, some
- 27:03hunger pains that reminds you of like your need for prayer of the
- 27:07reminder man God, I am always, if you will like I'm I'm one day
- 27:13away. I'm one breath away from no
- 27:17longer living, but God, thank you that you sustain me each and
- 27:21every moment like that's a great thing.
- 27:23But whether or not you eat meat on weekdays or on Fridays or
- 27:29whatever like that is not an indication of your dedication to
- 27:34God or your obedience of His word here.
- 27:36From this passage, I would say if someone equates your eating
- 27:41of a particular food as as like being bad, that you shouldn't do
- 27:48it because of your relationship with God.
- 27:50That is a doctrine of demon that is focusing on things that God
- 27:54has called good and then now calling them bad.
- 27:59Don't listen to that. So what is the take away that we
- 28:03have from these verses? It is this God has made our
- 28:08world, not just the spiritual, He has also made the physical
- 28:12world. And our response to that ought
- 28:14to be with gratitude, like thank God for your spouse.
- 28:19You can thank God for intimacy within marriage.
- 28:22You can thank God for the foods and the drinks that he has
- 28:26created in our world. And when we interact with all of
- 28:31these things, our marriage ought to be for the glory of God, The
- 28:34food that we eat and the drinks that we drink, We ought to do so
- 28:38with gratitude and with glory given to God as a result.
- 28:43Don't listen to those who go against the Word of God.
- 28:47Instead, may we be faithful to obey what the Word actually
- 28:53says, to keep our eyes focused on Jesus and the gospel.
- 28:57Realize what the New covenant means for us, and not get bogged
- 29:02down by false teachers. Keep our eyes on Jesus.
- 29:06Be thankful, and do not listen to demons.
- 29:10I hope that's an encouragement to you today.
- 29:12God bless.
