- 2:42Speaker 4: us right now. Good morning, sir, and welcome to the show.
- 2:45Speaker 4: How you doing, my friend?
- 2:47Speaker 5: I'm fine? How cold is it right now?
- 2:51Speaker 2: Hold on?
- 2:52Speaker 4: It is eighteen right now according to the app on
- 2:57Speaker 4: my phone, it's eighteen.
- 2:58Speaker 5: So well. I got a When I was in the
- 3:02Speaker 5: Marine Corps and got out of parasol. We we thought
- 3:06Speaker 5: things would slack up. We went to empantry training and
- 3:09Speaker 5: we trained in in weather colder than this. Really, uh,
- 3:15Speaker 5: I swore I'd never be cold.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Well you do spend time in California where you I
- 3:20Speaker 4: think you're going next week on Thursday. Okay, so you
- 3:23Speaker 4: will not be here with us next Monday.
- 3:24Speaker 5: I'll be back Sunday night. Maybe.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Well okay, well just let me know.
- 3:28Speaker 4: I'll text you if you're tired and you need to
- 3:30Speaker 4: sleep in a little bit. I mean, I completely understand
- 3:32Speaker 4: that the mayor is going to be what this does,
- 3:35Speaker 4: I said a little bit later on, and uh, uh,
- 3:38Speaker 4: we've got we've had some messes, uh in Charleston, and
- 3:42Speaker 4: and not just Charleston, but in other areas with these
- 3:44Speaker 4: water these water line breaks, water main breaks and this.
- 3:47Speaker 4: You know, when you have sustained cold like what we have.
- 3:50Speaker 4: And again it's not exclusive to Charleston. It's happening. There's
- 3:53Speaker 4: one right down for my house the other day. Didn't
- 3:55Speaker 4: affect me, but there's one right down for my house
- 3:57Speaker 4: in Tay's Valley the other day.
- 3:59Speaker 2: It's it happens.
- 4:00Speaker 5: And then when it falls out, in other words, when
- 4:04Speaker 5: it does warm up, then you have it again. Yeah,
- 4:09Speaker 5: then pipes start busting again because they fall out. Yeah
- 4:16Speaker 5: it is. And uh, I still have the restaurant over there,
- 4:20Speaker 5: it's not open, but I worry about that you know
- 4:23Speaker 5: about UH about pipe busting over there.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Now you're one of the folks that's impacted by UH
- 4:31Speaker 4: with a water outage?
- 4:33Speaker 3: Right?
- 4:33Speaker 2: Did we use on me?
- 4:34Speaker 5: Can't even of the bathroom?
- 4:36Speaker 4: I want to that's why you came in early this morning.
- 4:41Speaker 5: I went to the I go the why to the week.
- 4:45Speaker 5: I go every morning at five, But this morning I
- 4:48Speaker 5: took my stuff with me and took a shower up there.
- 4:51Speaker 4: I thought you were looking awful dapper this morning, and
- 4:54Speaker 4: for some way that hadn't had a shower. But that's
- 4:55Speaker 4: just Danny, And what a question I want to ask you,
- 4:58Speaker 4: And and I mean this and all seriousness. You and
- 4:59Speaker 4: I a lot of fun on the show, but I
- 5:01Speaker 4: mean this in all sears. When you were mayor, you
- 5:04Speaker 4: were known, you know, as quite the immaculate dresser. I
- 5:08Speaker 4: mean you always had a nice suit and.
- 5:10Speaker 2: So on and so forth.
- 5:12Speaker 4: Do you I know you're retired now you don't have
- 5:14Speaker 4: to dress like that anymore, but you still have the
- 5:16Speaker 4: suits though, Yeah, okay.
- 5:18Speaker 5: But I've lost weight since then, and I mean I
- 5:24Speaker 5: could still wear that stuff, okay, and I can't.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Well, why would you want to? That's the thing.
- 5:29Speaker 5: When you're retired occasionally I will. I mean, if there's
- 5:32Speaker 5: some event for me to go to that I will
- 5:38Speaker 5: wear those kind of clothes.
- 5:39Speaker 4: How many suits did you do you have? I'm just curious.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Forty forty Okay, Actually I would have thought more.
- 5:47Speaker 5: No, I had. I gave way a lot of them, right, Yeah,
- 5:51Speaker 5: I gave them to who is it that's out here
- 5:56Speaker 5: in the lot John Roberts.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Uh, oh, Mountain Mission.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Yeah, I gave it. I gave them a lot of those.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Okay, there's a lot.
- 6:05Speaker 4: There's a few programs around and I know a Putnam
- 6:07Speaker 4: County through the Chamber of Commerce, they have one, and
- 6:09Speaker 4: they have them also in Charleston, uh where they you
- 6:12Speaker 4: can people can donate there.
- 6:13Speaker 6: There.
- 6:14Speaker 4: It's kind of like a dress for success thing where
- 6:16Speaker 4: you can because a lot of times when people go
- 6:18Speaker 4: for job interviews, particularly people that are trying to better
- 6:21Speaker 4: themselves in the recovery community and so on and so forth,
- 6:23Speaker 4: they simply don't have the clothes, and.
- 6:25Speaker 5: So they find a suit that fits them, yeah, and
- 6:29Speaker 5: put them in those clothes to go for the job interviews.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 6:33Speaker 4: And it's not always suits. I mean sometimes it's just
- 6:36Speaker 4: you know, it could be dockers or something. Just so
- 6:38Speaker 4: you know, I think, I think those programs like that
- 6:40Speaker 4: are great. I mean, I really really do.
- 6:42Speaker 5: But I didn't. I didn't wear a sports coats I
- 6:46Speaker 5: worked this.
- 6:47Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Always there's a difference. There's a difference between a suit
- 6:52Speaker 2: and a and a sport.
- 6:52Speaker 5: Code very expensive. Yeah it was. Uh, I spent a
- 6:57Speaker 5: lot of money on clothes.
- 6:59Speaker 2: But but you always looked good.
- 7:01Speaker 4: That was the thing that I always noticed if i'd
- 7:02Speaker 4: see on TV, if I was in an event, even
- 7:05Speaker 4: though I didn't really know you, you always just looked
- 7:09Speaker 4: the part.
- 7:10Speaker 5: Samely. When I was sheriff, I always wore, you know,
- 7:16Speaker 5: really nice clothes, and but.
- 7:19Speaker 4: You didn't wear a uniform though, did you never?
- 7:22Speaker 5: No gun?
- 7:22Speaker 2: No, nothing like Andy Taylor.
- 7:25Speaker 5: Do you know that when I became sheriff, they had
- 7:33Speaker 5: to buy their own guns.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Yes?
- 7:36Speaker 2: He told me that.
- 7:37Speaker 5: Yeah, I became sheriff. They had to buy their own guns.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Yes, he told me that.
- 7:46Speaker 5: Yeah. And we changed that that we issued guns pistols
- 7:53Speaker 5: to the deputies so they wouldn't have to buy their own, right.
- 7:58Speaker 5: And that's I mean, I think it's kind of ridiculous
- 8:03Speaker 5: that you wouldn't issue.
- 8:05Speaker 4: I mean, it's part of the it's it's part of
- 8:07Speaker 4: the equipment. I mean, in my opinion, it's it's the
- 8:10Speaker 4: It's the same as a squad car.
- 8:11Speaker 5: And why should yeah, why shouldn't it be uniform?
- 8:14Speaker 8: Right?
- 8:15Speaker 5: In other words, why should one person have a different
- 8:17Speaker 5: pistol than the other person. We put cages in the
- 8:21Speaker 5: we got new we got new cars. We put cages
- 8:27Speaker 5: in the back of the cars with shotguns. I mean
- 8:30Speaker 5: we we had we we had a first class operation
- 8:34Speaker 5: over there. I got involved in skirmishes with the county
- 8:41Speaker 5: Commission and there was a jail lawsuit going on that
- 8:52Speaker 5: I settled. And if we hadn't a settled that, if
- 8:58Speaker 5: we'd allowed the jail to go in receivership, it would
- 9:01Speaker 5: cost the county two to three million dollars cost Cabal
- 9:06Speaker 5: County me and.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember that.
- 9:09Speaker 5: And so we settled ours. I want up. I don't
- 9:19Speaker 5: have a lawyer. I went up with Dan Hedges the
- 9:23Speaker 5: Apple read a lawyer and settled it. That cost a
- 9:26Speaker 5: quarter May's dollars.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Were you a proponent of the regional jail system that
- 9:31Speaker 4: we have now? Because I'm old enough to remember many
- 9:34Speaker 4: of our listeners are as well. When every every courthouse
- 9:36Speaker 4: whatever you know, had had a county jail, and then
- 9:39Speaker 4: that was a novel concept when it first came into being.
- 9:42Speaker 4: The regional jail system that well that we have now,
- 9:45Speaker 4: were you a proponent of that?
- 9:47Speaker 5: Uh? I didn't quite understand it. I didn't think it
- 9:50Speaker 5: would ever come to be. But yeah, now because now
- 9:53Speaker 5: the sheriff. When I got to be sheriff, Kemp Milton says,
- 9:58Speaker 5: your biggest problem, it's going to be the jail and
- 10:02Speaker 5: he was right, Well, now the sheriff doesn't have that problem.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Well, but the counties have the problem now because that's
- 10:08Speaker 4: one of the things. In some of the poorer counties
- 10:10Speaker 4: in West Virginia, they're in rears when it comes to
- 10:13Speaker 4: their jail bill. That's one of the that's one of
- 10:16Speaker 4: the big expenses. And there are counties, and I don't
- 10:18Speaker 4: know what the current stats are, but there are counties
- 10:20Speaker 4: that simply can't pay their jail.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Because they still have to pay for them. They pay
- 10:24Speaker 2: into the system.
- 10:25Speaker 5: And you know what their answer is, what's that to
- 10:28Speaker 5: make the cities pay for it? In other words, you
- 10:34Speaker 5: take a defendant in front of a magicate and they
- 10:43Speaker 5: on a state charge, and they decide to lock them up.
- 10:49Speaker 5: They want to they want the cities to pay it,
- 10:53Speaker 5: at least part of it. But yet it's it's it's
- 10:57Speaker 5: a county function and it's a state crime. Now, if
- 11:02Speaker 5: the city in our jail, in the city jail, in
- 11:08Speaker 5: other words, if we put an inmate like a prostitute
- 11:12Speaker 5: in jail for a few days, the city has to
- 11:14Speaker 5: pay the fee. But if you take an inmate front
- 11:18Speaker 5: of a magistrate, the state, the county should have to pay.
- 11:24Speaker 5: They're the ones to collect the property taxes.
- 11:28Speaker 4: You know, I want to switch gears for a moment,
- 11:31Speaker 4: and when I hold you through the break and again
- 11:32Speaker 4: we kind of reverse things. The first Monday of the month,
- 11:35Speaker 4: the mayor comes in. Mayor Goodwin comes in to ask
- 11:38Speaker 4: her to take questions, comments and so on and so forth.
- 11:40Speaker 4: So she'll be up a little bit later on. So
- 11:42Speaker 4: that's why I have Danny come in a little bit earlier.
- 11:45Speaker 2: The mayor.
- 11:47Speaker 4: Does have primary opposition, but nothing in the general as
- 11:52Speaker 4: far as as I know, unless I looked at it,
- 11:55Speaker 4: I don't. I don't think she has. And if I'm
- 11:57Speaker 4: wrong about that, I meant to check that and I forgot.
- 11:59Speaker 4: I know she'll tell, but it's going to be her
- 12:01Speaker 4: last term running she said that your your thoughts on
- 12:08Speaker 4: the job mayor good. One's done in her first two terms.
- 12:11Speaker 5: That she's done. Fine. Her we're different. You know, her
- 12:17Speaker 5: style would be different than my style.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Nothing wrong with that.
- 12:22Speaker 5: If if I was, I think that if she could
- 12:27Speaker 5: somehow pull off getting this mall, she could pull off
- 12:34Speaker 5: something really great.
- 12:35Speaker 4: Well, she's said that even if everything and we'll talk
- 12:38Speaker 4: to her about it, maybe with an update, but you know,
- 12:41Speaker 4: she has said that even if somehow the city does
- 12:44Speaker 4: take ownership of the mall, it's not going to be like, Okay,
- 12:47Speaker 4: we got it two months from now. I mean, she
- 12:49Speaker 4: said it'll be it'll this process, if it happens and
- 12:53Speaker 4: everything falls in the line, is going to be years
- 12:55Speaker 4: down the line.
- 12:56Speaker 2: It's not going to be during her term.
- 12:58Speaker 4: And she said that it will, I mean, the work
- 13:00Speaker 4: will begin, but as far as what it would look
- 13:03Speaker 4: like is not going to be during her term.
- 13:05Speaker 5: And she said that I have people and she has people.
- 13:11Speaker 5: They're different people, but I have people I could call
- 13:17Speaker 5: and tell them I've got them all I need we
- 13:25Speaker 5: need to develop it, and I've still got They're still
- 13:29Speaker 5: out there. My people are still out there, and she's
- 13:32Speaker 5: got people. I'm not going to I mean I name
- 13:36Speaker 5: one of them. I'm not going to write now, But
- 13:39Speaker 5: but she can round up some people and have them
- 13:46Speaker 5: to round up some other people and some investors. And
- 13:54Speaker 5: one thing you might do is cut that mall right
- 13:56Speaker 5: down the middle. And there's there's all kinds of stuff
- 14:02Speaker 5: that could be done there.
- 14:04Speaker 2: What would you do if you had it?
- 14:06Speaker 4: Let's say, no questions ask you're the mayor, or you're
- 14:09Speaker 4: not the mayor, whatever, you have them all, what do
- 14:12Speaker 4: you do with it?
- 14:12Speaker 7: Well?
- 14:13Speaker 5: I would get the people I think that are in
- 14:16Speaker 5: my app.
- 14:17Speaker 4: Okay, okay, but but what would you do with it
- 14:20Speaker 4: if you've got the investors?
- 14:21Speaker 5: I don't know. I don't know. I would have to
- 14:24Speaker 5: wait and talk to these these folks that I would
- 14:28Speaker 5: try to get to come in here, and I know
- 14:32Speaker 5: it would involve people living there and try to get
- 14:39Speaker 5: some retail back in there.
- 14:42Speaker 4: I mean, that's that's kind of where I have been
- 14:44Speaker 4: Danny on This is is and the term is mixed use.
- 14:47Speaker 4: I mean, if you do a variety of things, you
- 14:49Speaker 4: have some offices, you have some retail, I mean you
- 14:52Speaker 4: get you know, you can still have a restaurant or
- 14:56Speaker 4: to bring bring back Tidewater, Uh, you know, something like that,
- 15:01Speaker 4: but also residential and also you know whatever the sports
- 15:06Speaker 4: complex is going to look like something like that too.
- 15:09Speaker 4: But the days of the town Center, when we've said
- 15:12Speaker 4: it toward blue in the face, man, the days of
- 15:14Speaker 4: the town Center in nineteen eighty eight are done. They're gone,
- 15:17Speaker 4: and they're never coming back. And nobody is going to
- 15:20Speaker 4: tell you any different on that. I mean, they're done.

- 18:17Speaker 2: Why do you say that, Oh.
- 18:18Speaker 5: I think she's incompetence. I don't. I mean, I think
- 18:22Speaker 5: there's a whole bunch of them there that shouldn't be there,
- 18:25Speaker 5: but I mean I think Rubio should be there. He's okay,
- 18:31Speaker 5: what do you make? And again I like Holman. He's
- 18:34Speaker 5: he worked for for President. He worked for Jay Johnson
- 18:38Speaker 5: under Obama, and Jay Johnson said there were four people
- 18:43Speaker 5: that he went to for advice when he was run
- 18:46Speaker 5: the show, and one of them was Tom Holman.
- 18:48Speaker 4: I will say this about Holman, uh and I've seen
- 18:51Speaker 4: a lot of interviews with him with you know, the
- 18:54Speaker 4: border situation. Now he's he's in Minnesota. He states his
- 18:59Speaker 4: case very very well. You don't never have to wonder
- 19:01Speaker 4: where he stands on anything in that. I will say
- 19:06Speaker 4: that something I read Danny over the weekend and it
- 19:09Speaker 4: kind of stuck with me, And I want to get
- 19:11Speaker 4: your take on this.
- 19:12Speaker 5: Now.
- 19:12Speaker 4: This is according to Pew Research, Texas, the state of
- 19:17Speaker 4: Texas has an estimated two point one million undocumented immigrants.
- 19:23Speaker 4: Florida has an estimated one point six million. Minnesota, which
- 19:30Speaker 4: as you know, especially with last month and so, has
- 19:32Speaker 4: been ground zero for ice, has an estimated one hundred
- 19:36Speaker 4: and thirty thousand undocumented immigrants. Now, look at the numbers
- 19:41Speaker 4: in Texas, the numbers in Florida, and look at the
- 19:44Speaker 4: numbers in Minnesota, as they say, the math doesn't math here.
- 19:50Speaker 4: I mean, why are we going after Minnesota when it's
- 19:53Speaker 4: obvious that Florida and Texas have many more undocumented folks.
- 19:58Speaker 4: I mean, I think you and I both know the
- 19:59Speaker 4: answer to that, but I'm interested to get your take.
- 20:02Speaker 5: Well, what I don't understand it's all political. But what
- 20:05Speaker 5: I don't understand is is why with that Somali scandal
- 20:12Speaker 5: going on up there, they didn't focus on that and
- 20:17Speaker 5: all the money, you know, the eight or nine billion
- 20:23Speaker 5: that the Treasury got scanned out of on that scandal. Instead,
- 20:32Speaker 5: they go up there and change the subject and they
- 20:35Speaker 5: start shooting people.
- 20:37Speaker 2: I mean, I just thought it.
- 20:38Speaker 4: I mean, it seems like to me that a good
- 20:41Speaker 4: place to start would be where there are more undocumented
- 20:46Speaker 4: and that would be Florida and Texas. But that doesn't
- 20:50Speaker 4: that that doesn't sell as well, and Maine was also
- 20:54Speaker 4: being looked at as well, and we all know why.
- 21:00Speaker 5: I'm just not excited about any of it. You know,
- 21:03Speaker 5: I'll be in California on Thursday afternoon. Do you know
- 21:07Speaker 5: what it's like out there.
- 21:08Speaker 4: I've never been to California, but you know what I mean.
- 21:11Speaker 4: I know what I see on TV. The immigrant Yeah, I.
- 21:14Speaker 5: Mean, you pull those people out of there, the economy
- 21:17Speaker 5: would collapse. I'm just not excited about it. As most people.
- 21:23Speaker 5: I realized there's some criminals, and I realized they got
- 21:28Speaker 5: in during the Biden administration when they just opened the
- 21:31Speaker 5: border up right.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Well.
- 21:33Speaker 4: And I think that even some of the more liberal
- 21:38Speaker 4: folks on some of the talking heads on the on
- 21:40Speaker 4: television have even said what happened under the Biden administration
- 21:44Speaker 4: should have never happened with all of these people just
- 21:47Speaker 4: pouring in.
- 21:47Speaker 2: I mean a lot of Democrats have come out and
- 21:49Speaker 2: said that there's no question and uh.
- 21:53Speaker 4: And as someone brought up on one of the shows yesterday, Danny,
- 21:57Speaker 4: you can say, Okay, these people that have come over
- 22:00Speaker 4: that they're not all criminals, but by definition, if they
- 22:04Speaker 4: came here illegally, they are a criminal.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Oh please, I mean, are they not breaking the law?
- 22:10Speaker 5: I don't, It doesn't. President Bush had a bill in
- 22:16Speaker 5: two thousand and six. Now here's what here's what gets
- 22:20Speaker 5: the Republicans. Every time you freeze everything you give you
- 22:29Speaker 5: get you give everybody green cards, and that way you
- 22:38Speaker 5: know who they are. You know who they are and
- 22:41Speaker 5: where they are and that's the people in this country.
- 22:45Speaker 5: It's a form of embessy. But they have to get
- 22:48Speaker 5: in the back of the line for citizenship, but they
- 22:50Speaker 5: get to stay here and once they apply for their
- 22:54Speaker 5: green cards, then you can do a background check on
- 22:57Speaker 5: them and then if they if they have a criminal
- 23:00Speaker 5: a little record and fill them out of the country.
- 23:03Speaker 4: All right, we had a phone call, dannyone to take
- 23:04Speaker 4: a phone call. Sure, Now let's go to Don and Tornado.
- 23:07Speaker 4: You're on with Danny Jones.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Go ahead, Hey, I.
- 23:11Speaker 10: Talked to you last time. You're on day, but the
- 23:13Speaker 10: show ended while we were talking. Yes, sir, yes, Now,
- 23:18Speaker 10: last last week you said that, uh, these illegal immigrants
- 23:24Speaker 10: or through full process of the law. Right, that's not true?
- 23:29Speaker 2: Okay, correct me? Then I'm I'm the first admit when
- 23:32Speaker 2: I'm wrong. You correct me.
- 23:34Speaker 10: That is not true. You can be cooked up and
- 23:37Speaker 10: deported anytime they find you if you're illegal. That that's
- 23:43Speaker 10: that's got president of that with the Supreme Court.
- 23:45Speaker 2: Okay, all right, now answer me this, yes sir.
- 23:50Speaker 10: Now, you've been Minnesota hal sanctuary cities, right, okay, just
- 23:55Speaker 10: that not go get federal law.
- 23:58Speaker 9: I mean, I.
- 24:01Speaker 10: Don't I don't know Okay, let me clarify.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Okay, let's say it.
- 24:04Speaker 10: Was eighteen sixty one. You say president would have went
- 24:09Speaker 10: along with sanctuary states that allowed slavery. No, no, did
- 24:13Speaker 10: that happen?
- 24:14Speaker 2: No? No, no, I don't think so. Danny want to
- 24:16Speaker 2: weigh in on this.
- 24:17Speaker 5: It's too much logic for me.
- 24:22Speaker 2: You're using too much logic for Danny.
- 24:24Speaker 5: Now, I think these people are entitled to hearings, and.
- 24:29Speaker 10: Are entitled to hearings in immigration courts, which aren't necessarily judges.
- 24:34Speaker 10: They don't even have to be lawyers, and they are
- 24:37Speaker 10: appointed by the Attorney General, and the attorney General can
- 24:42Speaker 10: override their decisions.
- 24:44Speaker 5: Well, you said they were entitled hearings. I thought you
- 24:47Speaker 5: said they weren't immigration courts.
- 24:49Speaker 10: They are not. They are not entitled to due process
- 24:53Speaker 10: on criminal proceedings.
- 24:54Speaker 5: Well, to me, immigration immigration court is due process.
- 25:01Speaker 10: Yes it is. And Holman has tried to tell you
- 25:04Speaker 10: all that they just termed what Lucid had been held
- 25:06Speaker 10: over two years, and that was because he said he
- 25:10Speaker 10: would be tortured if he was returned to his home country. Okay,
- 25:13Speaker 10: read that over the weekend. Okay, Now, for some reason,
- 25:18Speaker 10: unbeknown to me, two years seems to be the limit
- 25:22Speaker 10: that you can just deport an illegal immigrant hipprodote sign. Now, Danny,
- 25:28Speaker 10: you had heartburn last week about them shooting that lady
- 25:33Speaker 10: in the car? Is that right?
- 25:36Speaker 5: Well, I don't know yet. It doesn't look good. I'd
- 25:41Speaker 5: have to see if I'd have to see if her
- 25:44Speaker 5: car was pointing at the gentleman, if she if she
- 25:48Speaker 5: was driving a missile to use against that ice agent.
- 25:53Speaker 5: But the tape I've seen doesn't make it look like that.
- 25:58Speaker 5: Now that that now the other guy to.
- 26:02Speaker 10: Me, you were go ahead, you were sheriff how long ago?
- 26:07Speaker 5: Forty years?
- 26:10Speaker 10: Forty years ago? Okay, I don't know if you were sheriff.
- 26:15Speaker 10: That it might have been after that. There was a
- 26:18Speaker 10: South Charostan policeman that killed a young young man at
- 26:22Speaker 10: South Charleston because he said he tried to hit him
- 26:24Speaker 10: with his car and there was no evidence anywhere. I
- 26:27Speaker 10: think his name was Joey Holtis and it happened in
- 26:30Speaker 10: four circle. How did you come down on that?
- 26:33Speaker 5: I have no knowledge or recollection of that.
- 26:38Speaker 10: Well, that was a long time ago, and that was
- 26:41Speaker 10: kind of unfair, but it is true. It is true.
- 26:44Speaker 10: It was in the middle of the night. The policeman
- 26:46Speaker 10: shot him and killed him and said he tried to
- 26:49Speaker 10: hit him with his car.
- 26:50Speaker 5: If she was trying to hit an iag when with
- 26:56Speaker 5: her car, then he has a defense. He has a defense.
- 27:01Speaker 5: But but that's just not what to me, That's not
- 27:04Speaker 5: what the tape looks like. Now, this other one, this
- 27:08Speaker 5: guy with Petty or what's his name, pretty pretty pretty,
- 27:13Speaker 5: that was murder.
- 27:16Speaker 10: Period that you would almost have to say that was
- 27:20Speaker 10: murder on Ashley Babbitt. She was unarmed.
- 27:25Speaker 5: Well, boy, there's nothing good. There's nothing you can say
- 27:29Speaker 5: about that that makes you feel good. I mean, I
- 27:34Speaker 5: felt so bad for her and her family. But she
- 27:37Speaker 5: was trying to she was trying to break in the
- 27:39Speaker 5: House of Representative.
- 27:44Speaker 10: Well way, yes, But why he singled her out and
- 27:49Speaker 10: not the other ones is in my honest opinion, I
- 27:53Speaker 10: think he pantied or I think he aspired his weapon.
- 27:57Speaker 5: Now he didn't. He didn't.
- 28:00Speaker 10: His finger was on and off the trigger.
- 28:03Speaker 5: He meant to, He meant to shoot somebody. It just
- 28:06Speaker 5: happened to be her. Well, you can read Liz Cheney's book.
- 28:12Speaker 5: It's it's in there.
- 28:14Speaker 10: I'm not ready tell you don't have to.
- 28:18Speaker 5: I mean, I'm just I study as much of this
- 28:21Speaker 5: stuff as I can. I try to get both sides of.
- 28:24Speaker 10: It well, and for the most part, I agree with
- 28:29Speaker 10: you sometimes most of the time. I mean you at
- 28:33Speaker 10: least you're not as hypocritical as others on the radio.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Yeah wait a minute, you.
- 28:40Speaker 10: I mean you have one state legislator on I heard
- 28:43Speaker 10: him tell the biggest whopping lines You've never challenged.
- 28:46Speaker 5: It won't fit.
- 28:47Speaker 10: He said he watched a policeman beat to death with
- 28:49Speaker 10: the American flag on January sixth, and that was not
- 28:52Speaker 10: absolutely not true.
- 28:54Speaker 4: Right, all right, Don if I haven't told you, I
- 28:57Speaker 4: appreciate you.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Listening, my friend.
- 29:01Speaker 10: Okay, thank you.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Yeah, twenty four minutes away from Tampa that.
- 29:06Speaker 5: A policemen got beat with the American that's.
- 29:10Speaker 4: I don't I'm not saying that didn't. I I don't
- 29:12Speaker 4: recall somebody. I don't recall somebody allegedly saying that. Don
- 29:16Speaker 4: may very well be right, though, because I don't remember
- 29:18Speaker 4: a lot. All right, before we let you go any
- 29:23Speaker 4: any any what needs to happen in Minnesota in your opinion?
- 29:28Speaker 5: Well, I mean, hadn't had nice done enough? I mean,
- 29:32Speaker 5: haven't they You said there were pockets of bigger populations
- 29:40Speaker 5: than other states may be able to go there.
- 29:43Speaker 2: They're not going to Texas or Florida. I promise you that.
- 29:45Speaker 2: Why because those are red states.
- 29:49Speaker 5: Yeah, and you know you go to Florida, those Cubans
- 29:53Speaker 5: are Republicans. And I'm just not excited about this. About
- 30:01Speaker 5: all these immigrants, I think there ought to be an
- 30:06Speaker 5: easier path the citizenship. I think they appreciate their citizenship
- 30:11Speaker 5: more than the people that were born here. I've talked
- 30:14Speaker 5: to them about.
- 30:15Speaker 2: It, and that's not anything new. I mean, I mean,
- 30:18Speaker 2: if you go back to our ancestor when they came here,
- 30:21Speaker 2: there was a there was a deep appreciation.
- 30:23Speaker 5: I was I was born, I mean I was. I
- 30:27Speaker 5: have presided with Judge Goodwin and Judge copenhaveer over two
- 30:33Speaker 5: swearing in ceremonies over there. And you talk about people
- 30:37Speaker 5: that are grateful to be American citizens. And I had
- 30:43Speaker 5: one lady come to my restaurant. She was some Syria.
- 30:46Speaker 5: He said, she just sold me. Said you people don't
- 30:49Speaker 5: appreciate what you have.
- 30:50Speaker 2: That's true.
- 30:51Speaker 4: Me read his final text for you and then we'll
- 30:54Speaker 4: get you out of here. Ask Danny which laws he's
- 30:57Speaker 4: okay with people breaking? Since he apparently gets to pick.
- 31:00Speaker 5: I don't get to pick. I get to be excited. Uh,
- 31:05Speaker 5: I'm I'm just not excited about uh. We I grew
- 31:10Speaker 5: up with lost people didn't observe hell like in the
- 31:13Speaker 5: sixties we had we had uh uh it was Charles
- 31:18Speaker 5: was a bootleg town and I was working in these
- 31:21Speaker 5: clubs and everything we were doing was illegal. I mean
- 31:26Speaker 5: you and we had we had prohibition this in this country.
- 31:33Speaker 5: I I I just I'm just not excited about it.
- 31:37Speaker 4: All Right, we gotta leave it there, go to California,
- 31:40Speaker 4: enjoy yourself.
- 31:41Speaker 2: I will, all right. We may talk to you next week,

- 37:09Speaker 4: and Philadelphia have never had to deal with this until
- 37:11Speaker 4: the brilliant move by Greg Abbott to send those people
- 37:13Speaker 4: to those cities. Minnesota is using this as propaganda and
- 37:17Speaker 4: it's despicable. What's so hard to understand about this? All right,
- 37:20Speaker 4: the mayor is here, how you doing your name?
- 37:22Speaker 5: All right?
- 37:22Speaker 2: It's great, all right?
- 37:24Speaker 4: Sorry, Chili is still but little Chile, and we've had
- 37:27Speaker 4: some water main breaks to talk about.
- 37:29Speaker 14: We really have, and you know that's been ongoing. Let
- 37:33Speaker 14: me be clear, I mean water breaks have have happened
- 37:37Speaker 14: last week and continuing into a water main break on
- 37:42Speaker 14: Courier Street, which I believe West Virginia American Water tried
- 37:46Speaker 14: to fix or was remedying last week. Towards the latter
- 37:50Speaker 14: part of last week, has happened again due to that
- 37:54Speaker 14: City Service the City Service Center where we do a
- 37:58Speaker 14: lot of our collections and development offices, building permits. It's
- 38:03Speaker 14: shut down this morning because we don't have any water
- 38:05Speaker 14: to that building and a lot of the buildings in
- 38:07Speaker 14: and around that area. Of course, these are also homes
- 38:11Speaker 14: that we're saying. It's not just a main break. Of course,
- 38:14Speaker 14: that's impacts so many, so many folks, including our city employees.
- 38:20Speaker 14: But again, you know, I sound like a broken record.
- 38:23Speaker 14: Mother nature has not been kind. You know, the temperatures
- 38:29Speaker 14: will creep up a little bit as we go. The
- 38:31Speaker 14: sun makes a big difference. The sun is out this morning,
- 38:35Speaker 14: and even though the temperatures are extremely cold, it is
- 38:39Speaker 14: so it is it is awesome to see, uh, the
- 38:43Speaker 14: sun pop out. But you know, the water main breaks
- 38:46Speaker 14: are are certainly a huge issue for us with these
- 38:50Speaker 14: freezing temperatures, and with these freezing temperatures and with the
- 38:54Speaker 14: dusting I shouldn't even say a dusting inches of snow
- 38:57Speaker 14: we had. You know, you're looking, you know, we're looking
- 39:01Speaker 14: here at the news, you know, on the national news
- 39:03Speaker 14: and the television above your head, Dave. I mean, tens
- 39:06Speaker 14: of thousands are still across you know, the South without
- 39:10Speaker 14: power this morning. And so the other challenge that we
- 39:14Speaker 14: are having because in municipal government, by the way, we're
- 39:18Speaker 14: the workers. We're the folks who are out salting and
- 39:21Speaker 14: scraping and working on those challenging issues. Other states are
- 39:25Speaker 14: facing that. And what happens is when you had this
- 39:28Speaker 14: wide swath of inclement weather happen. We're all fighting for salt.
- 39:34Speaker 14: We're all fighting for salt.
- 39:35Speaker 4: It's February second, and the groundhog says six more weeks
- 39:41Speaker 4: of winter.
- 39:41Speaker 6: I know.
- 39:42Speaker 4: That's what punk Satani Phil said. And his record is
- 39:45Speaker 4: not very good.
- 39:45Speaker 14: It's not very good. Although I put something, you know,
- 39:48Speaker 14: just kind of a flip comment, like, you know, mister groundhog,
- 39:51Speaker 14: are you serious? You know, back up, and somebody sent
- 39:54Speaker 14: of course, because AI everybody makes up these terribly hysterical
- 39:59Speaker 14: image is and someone had an image of me in
- 40:02Speaker 14: a boxing ring with punk Satani and I'm giving them
- 40:05Speaker 14: a right hook and involved that does not reflect the
- 40:11Speaker 14: views or opinions of this mayor would not hit an animal.
- 40:14Speaker 14: I love animals. But back to the to the salt issue.
- 40:18Speaker 14: It's an issue. I mean it's an issue all across
- 40:20Speaker 14: the state, and especially not just securing I know we
- 40:24Speaker 14: have salt, we've been using salt. But let me say
- 40:27Speaker 14: two things. So's everybody else, and so it is a
- 40:30Speaker 14: battle always to make sure we have and not just
- 40:33Speaker 14: we the state of West Virginia. All of the municipalities
- 40:37Speaker 14: that surround the city of Charleston are fighting for salt,
- 40:41Speaker 14: making sure the reserves are up ours are we have
- 40:44Speaker 14: enough to do the work we need to do. But again,
- 40:46Speaker 14: it's February second, and also as we mentioned last week,
- 40:50Speaker 14: but it's worth repeating because we get calls in the
- 40:52Speaker 14: office right all the time when people say, what are
- 40:55Speaker 14: the people? You know, I'll tell you what everybody's talking about. Well,
- 40:57Speaker 14: I'll tell you what everybody's talking about, because they're calling
- 40:59Speaker 14: my office every week, get you know, weekly reports. Who's
- 41:02Speaker 14: calling and why? Of course, it's salt. Hey can you
- 41:04Speaker 14: throw some salt down?
- 41:05Speaker 4: Hey?
- 41:05Speaker 14: Can you come up here? After a certain temperature, salt
- 41:09Speaker 14: is really ineffective. We try, we try to break up
- 41:12Speaker 14: the ice, you know, with the sun, throw some salt down.
- 41:15Speaker 14: Sometimes we can make that happen, but other times it
- 41:19Speaker 14: is just simply impossible without chiseling it off of the roadways.
- 41:25Speaker 14: And our guys are doing a great job. But you know,
- 41:27Speaker 14: keep in mind when we're telling you to stay off
- 41:29Speaker 14: the roads, and we have our trucks out on the roads,
- 41:32Speaker 14: you know, plus seventeen trucks. We had vehicles slut, huge
- 41:38Speaker 14: salt trucks sliding off into ditches. So it was not
- 41:44Speaker 14: it was not an easy task this past storm. It
- 41:47Speaker 14: was extremely difficult. Some of those slippy conditions still continue.
- 41:51Speaker 14: You know, the buses, you know, I could, I could
- 41:53Speaker 14: hear them all the way back from working out this morning,
- 41:56Speaker 14: you know, slow going through our roads to get our kiddos.
- 42:00Speaker 14: And so what we hope is even though I see,
- 42:03Speaker 14: you know, we're gonna get maybe a dusting later this
- 42:06Speaker 14: week or an inch or two, I can tell you
- 42:09Speaker 14: that we have morning and afternoon calls. We have an
- 42:14Speaker 14: emergency text string that We are always updating one another.
- 42:18Speaker 14: What's happening, what do we need to do, what areas
- 42:21Speaker 14: of the city. You know, their accidents is duly noted
- 42:23Speaker 14: by your text this morning to.
- 42:25Speaker 4: You, Dave.
- 42:26Speaker 14: There are accidents that are happening still everywhere, and so
- 42:30Speaker 14: great measure in still slowing down, taking your time the
- 42:34Speaker 14: roads passable driver, But of course they are. They all are.
- 42:37Speaker 14: If you're going at a slow pace, going the speed
- 42:41Speaker 14: limit still on the highways, I would not. I would not,
- 42:45Speaker 14: even though I think the state of West Virginia did
- 42:47Speaker 14: a really good job. I mean they they preset the
- 42:51Speaker 14: beat brine is what I'm calling it.
- 42:53Speaker 2: Juice. It's the new avocado. Everybody's got to have it.
- 42:58Speaker 14: But they're doing you know, they're communicating with us. We're
- 43:02Speaker 14: communicating with them, and I just say us. I mean,
- 43:04Speaker 14: you know, my vested interest is to make sure that
- 43:06Speaker 14: the entire not just the city of Charleston, but the
- 43:09Speaker 14: entire region is clear because there's so many folks who
- 43:12Speaker 14: don't live in the city of Charleston. They run businesses,
- 43:15Speaker 14: they work in the city of Charleston, and so it
- 43:18Speaker 14: is always my concern for the entire region to make
- 43:21Speaker 14: sure that these roads are passable. We get lots of
- 43:24Speaker 14: calls on sidewalks and you know, you know, for the
- 43:28Speaker 14: most part, it's it is a you know, there's public
- 43:31Speaker 14: access points and you know, our emergen are handicap accessible,
- 43:39Speaker 14: you know, entrance and exit ways. We have tried to
- 43:41Speaker 14: keep up and doing our best certainly through these, but
- 43:45Speaker 14: it's the residents and the businesses who have that property
- 43:48Speaker 14: in front of their sidewalk to do that work. I
- 43:50Speaker 14: saw a couple of emails that came in the Mayor's
- 43:53Speaker 14: office like, hey, you need you need to tell my
- 43:56Speaker 14: neighbor that they need to clear their sidewalk. Well, we'll
- 43:58Speaker 14: do our very best in helping folks.
- 44:01Speaker 5: All right.
- 44:01Speaker 4: We did have a text about a specific area. Here
- 44:04Speaker 4: been nine days is the textas since the ice storm
- 44:07Speaker 4: hit will when will the city address the ice covered
- 44:09Speaker 4: streets in East End, West Side, North Charleston and Kanas City.
- 44:12Speaker 14: Did they say sidewalks or resum Sorry I didn't.
- 44:14Speaker 2: It says it didn't the ice covered streets?
- 44:18Speaker 14: Ice covered streets. Well, I'll say I'll say this to
- 44:20Speaker 14: you as as we have noted many many times, we
- 44:24Speaker 14: try to hit the flats because that's I think that's
- 44:26Speaker 14: what the texture is calling about as best as we
- 44:29Speaker 14: possibly can. But we have to make sure that also
- 44:32Speaker 14: are hills because we live in the Mountain state, to
- 44:37Speaker 14: make sure that those are cleared and shoveled and scraped
- 44:40Speaker 14: and salted. But we're doing our very We're doing our
- 44:44Speaker 14: very best. Our guys have done an incredible job, you know,
- 44:48Speaker 14: and you know, for safety reasons too, we make sure
- 44:50Speaker 14: that folks have time to you know, rest as well.
- 44:55Speaker 14: But if the color wants to or the textor wants
- 44:57Speaker 14: to call me at three four eight eight one seven
- 44:59Speaker 14: four and give me a specific area that they're talking about,

- 49:08Speaker 14: That's a great question. Or video footage, that's a that's
- 49:11Speaker 14: an awesome question. Actually, my Knie sent it to me
- 49:13Speaker 14: last night. He said, and Ammy, you and Uncle Booth
- 49:16Speaker 14: need to go get this little guy. I think his
- 49:18Speaker 14: names was Stubbed. My goodness, he was so cute.
- 49:22Speaker 2: We shot in the back of the head.
- 49:24Speaker 14: I don't know, but to the texture. I'm delighted to
- 49:28Speaker 14: look into it this morning, because I just think that's unfathomable.
- 49:30Speaker 14: I just can't understand why anyone would do But I
- 49:33Speaker 14: can't understand why anyone would do this. But not that
- 49:36Speaker 14: we have time to talk about Gus the bus Goodwin,
- 49:39Speaker 14: but Booth and I and our boys had for six
- 49:41Speaker 14: almost sixteen years a lab Saint Bernard, who was put
- 49:46Speaker 14: in a garbage bag with four of his sisters and
- 49:49Speaker 14: left on It looked like they were trying to throw
- 49:51Speaker 14: in the river, but they never made it down there.
- 49:54Speaker 14: And we lost Gus just you know, two years ago,
- 49:58Speaker 14: and we still just can't. We still are just you know,
- 50:04Speaker 14: grieving this wonderful, wonderful boy that we had in our
- 50:08Speaker 14: home and shared our lives with for sixteen years. So
- 50:11Speaker 14: I can't I don't get it. I don't get it,
- 50:12Speaker 14: but I'll look into it. Thank you.
- 50:13Speaker 4: But Dave Alan showing five any line brought to you,

- 50:31Speaker 14: My oldest son, Joseph, was born on the first day
- 50:34Speaker 14: of spring, and so we look forward to not only
- 50:37Speaker 14: Joseph's birthday, but we look forward to the first day
- 50:40Speaker 14: of spring. When you start to see the daffodils start
- 50:44Speaker 14: to pop up. It certainly gives me hope. And that
- 50:47Speaker 14: is where I know many of us are right now.
- 50:51Speaker 14: Because it is difficult. Let me also say this, it
- 50:55Speaker 14: is difficult. But what I also see and the calls
- 50:57Speaker 14: that we also get and the outreach that we are
- 50:59Speaker 14: also doing, is we're going into wellness checks stave. We've
- 51:02Speaker 14: been doing them, We're going to continue to do them.
- 51:05Speaker 14: And we have some of the most incredible people living
- 51:07Speaker 14: in and around the city of Charleston, who, by the way,
- 51:11Speaker 14: are calling not just to get resources for their family
- 51:14Speaker 14: or friends. People they do not know. Hey, there's a
- 51:18Speaker 14: neighbor of mine, I haven't seen him or her, and
- 51:21Speaker 14: do you mind to check on them. We are such
- 51:24Speaker 14: a compassionate people. It makes me so proud. I mean,
- 51:29Speaker 14: you know, we always are ready to go. I mean,
- 51:32Speaker 14: you know, I e the little fistfight of me with
- 51:34Speaker 14: Pansadani Phil this morning. Listen. We're strong people, We're resilient.
- 51:39Speaker 14: We we work with Gusto. But the thing that I
- 51:43Speaker 14: love about us, you can do both. By the way,
- 51:45Speaker 14: you can be a strong people, you can be solid
- 51:50Speaker 14: in your stance, but you also can have empathy and
- 51:53Speaker 14: sympathy and compassion for others. And I also saw that
- 51:56Speaker 14: during these tough times because we have a very large
- 51:59Speaker 14: senior population and we have folks who may not have
- 52:02Speaker 14: been able to get in or out. And it is
- 52:05Speaker 14: also part of our responsibility, I believe as a people
- 52:07Speaker 14: to make sure that we are taking care of one another.
- 52:10Speaker 14: That's what we do best.
- 52:11Speaker 4: Let me get this final text and ask the Mary
- 52:12Speaker 4: if she has any information on the possible new landfill
- 52:15Speaker 4: for Charleston Knawa Valley.
- 52:16Speaker 2: Thirty seconds.
- 52:17Speaker 14: Yeah, we have made those arrangements. As folks probably know
- 52:21Speaker 14: from our conversation in the past. Our landfill is moving,
- 52:27Speaker 14: and so it's you know, there's some ebbs and flows,
- 52:30Speaker 14: and we're doing the best that we can to make
- 52:32Speaker 14: this very difficult transition easier for mostly our co workers too,
- 52:36Speaker 14: all right,
