- 0:11Hello, friends, it's Sean here. It's a Monday, it's the 19th of
- 0:16January, and thank you for inviting me into the start of
- 0:19your week so that we can continue reading through the
- 0:24Gospel of Luke. And this week we are going to be
- 0:28having wall to wall parables. It is just like sitting down
- 0:33with Jesus, the rabbi, and he is going to share story after story
- 0:37after parable after parable. And I imagine for most of us, we
- 0:41will know these parables, but we are going to listen to them with
- 0:45fresh ears and be reminded of the truth that the God of the
- 0:49universe has for us to learn more about God and his Kingdom
- 0:54and our role in it. Oh, what a treat.
- 0:57So friends, let us travel back. Let us get a comfy spot sitting
- 1:02on the grass or the dirt or leaning against a tree, hearing
- 1:06what it is that Jesus is going to share with us as we continue
- 1:10reading through the Gospel of Luke today reading chapter 15.
- 1:25Tax collectors and other notorious sinners often came to
- 1:28listen to Jesus teach. This made the Pharisees and
- 1:31teachers of religious law complain that he was associating
- 1:34with such sinful people, even eating with them.
- 1:38So Jesus told them this story. If a man has 100 sheep and one
- 1:43of them gets lost, what will he do?
- 1:45Won't he leave the 99 others in the wilderness and go to search
- 1:49for the one that was lost until he finds it?
- 1:52And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on
- 1:56his shoulders. When he arrives, he will call
- 1:58together his friends and neighbours, saying, Rejoice with
- 2:01me because I've found my lost sheep.
- 2:04In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost
- 2:08Sinner who repents and returns to God, than over 99 others who
- 2:13are righteous and haven't strayed away.
- 2:16Or suppose a woman has 10 silver coins and loses 1.
- 2:20Won't she light a lamp and sweep the entire house and search
- 2:24carefully until she finds it, and when she finds it, she will
- 2:27call in her friends and neighbours and say, Rejoice with
- 2:31me because I have found my lost coin.
- 2:34In the same way there is joy in the presence of God's angels
- 2:38when even 1 Sinner repents. To illustrate this point
- 2:42further, Jesus told them this story.
- 2:46A man had two sons. The younger son told his father,
- 2:50I want my share of your estate now before you die.
- 2:53So his father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons.
- 2:58A few days later, his younger son packed all his belongings
- 3:01and moved to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money in
- 3:06wild living. About the time his money ran
- 3:10out, a great famine swept over the land and he began to starve.
- 3:14He persuaded a local farmer to hire him, and the man sent him
- 3:18into his fields to feed the pigs.
- 3:20The young man became so hungry that even the pods he was
- 3:24feeding the pigs look good to him, but no one gave him
- 3:28anything. When he finally came to his
- 3:31senses, he said to himself at home, even the hired servants
- 3:35have food enough to spare. And here I am dying of hunger.
- 3:39I will go home to my father and say, Father, I've sinned against
- 3:44both heaven and you, and I'm no longer worthy of being called
- 3:48your son. Please take me on as a hired
- 3:51servant. So he returned home to his
- 3:53father, and while he was still a long way off, his father saw him
- 3:57coming. Filled with love and compassion,
- 4:01he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.
- 4:05His son said to him, Father, I have sinned against both heaven
- 4:08and you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son.
- 4:12But his father said to the servants, Quick, bring the
- 4:16finest robe in the house and put it on him.
- 4:18Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet.
- 4:22Kill the calf we've been fattening.
- 4:25We must celebrate with a feast, for this son of mine was dead
- 4:29and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is
- 4:33found. So the party began.
- 4:37Meanwhile, the older son was in the fields working.
- 4:40When he returned home, he heard music and dancing in the house
- 4:44and he asked one of the servants what was going on.
- 4:46Your brother is back, he was told, and your father has killed
- 4:50the fattened calf. We are celebrating because of
- 4:53his safe return. The older brother was angry and
- 4:56wouldn't go in. His father came out and begged
- 4:59him, but he replied. All these years I've slaved for
- 5:04you and never once refused to do a single thing you told me to.
- 5:09And in all that time, you never gave me even one young goat for
- 5:13a feast with my friends, yet when this son of yours comes
- 5:18back after squandering your money on prostitutes, you
- 5:22celebrate by killing the fattened calf.
- 5:26His father said to him. Look dear son, you have always
- 5:30stayed by me and everything I have is yours.
- 5:34We had to celebrate this happy day, for your brother was dead
- 5:38and has come back to life. He was lost, but now he is
- 5:42found. Oh,
- 5:53Jesus, we see so clearly your heart and your Father's heart as
- 5:58you share these three parables, and we just marvel at how
- 6:03different you are to conventional wisdom.
- 6:08We like people getting their just desserts, and we think that
- 6:12what people do kind of earns what they get.
- 6:15But here you are sharing this radical approach that you love
- 6:21with this abandoned, with this generosity, and that whenever
- 6:25somebody turns from whatever decisions they're making, good,
- 6:28bad, or indifferent, and return to you, you just run to them.
- 6:33You don't sit in your parlour awaiting our return, but like
- 6:37that father of the prodigal son, you run to us and throw your
- 6:41arms around us. You prepare a feast.
- 6:44You put your ring on our finger and sandals on our feet.
- 6:49We truly are your children, and you celebrate us as such.
- 6:55My Lord, we don't understand this generosity, and it's hard
- 6:58for us to wrap our heads around it, but it doesn't limit your
- 7:02generosity because your generosity is not subject to our
- 7:05understanding, thankfully. We thank you for your love and
- 7:10for your provision, and we pray that you soften our hearts to be
- 7:15more like yours and less like that older brother that we know
- 7:19our hearts are all too often like.
- 7:22You're wonderful, and we pray all of this in your loving and
- 7:26forgiving name, Jesus, Amen.
